This 18-suite Lake Como Boutique Hotel Offers a Fresh Take on Traditional Italian Luxury
Villa Lario is giving the lake's storied luxury scene a renewed energy.
It can feel almost impossible to find a hotel that strikes the perfect balance between luxury and livability — a place that's a true home away from home, but in an elevated, aspirational way. That is, until you stay at Villa Lario .
I first discovered the 18-suite boutique property on a solo trip through Italy in the summer of 2021. The hotel had just debuted eight new suites, affirming its place as a contender within Lake Como's storied luxury scene .
It took less than a day of enjoying the property to realize that it was something special — the panoramic view, harmonious design, ingredient-driven menu, and laid-back atmosphere came together to create a heavenly escape. After my three-night stay, I promised myself I would return, unable to bear that my time at this blissful hideaway was coming to an end. So, that's exactly what I did — I went back this May, less than a year later.
I brought my partner this time, and I was a bit nervous that all of my ranting and raving had given him hard-to-match expectations. But he somehow found it even better than I had described, noting that the feeling you get from the combination of luxury amenities and a homey atmosphere is hard to grasp without having experienced it.
However, there are a number of standout elements of the hotel that are easier to put into words. Read on for a few of the things that make Villa Lario a must-visit on Italy's famed Lake Como.
Architecture and Design
The 19th-century villa is made up of four distinct buildings that each have their own personality. The largest, Il Palazzo, unveiled renovations just last year. The entire property blends classic Italian architecture and modern luxury amenities, but this intertwining is most noticeable in this freshly revamped space, which, to me, feels like the heart of the hotel.
In addition to its suites, Il Palazzo boasts a grand fireplace (part of the original build), towering glass doors that open directly onto the lake, and a long terrace at lake level — an ideal spot for an aperitivo . The old and new fuse seamlessly, perhaps because many of the materials and furnishings used in the renovation were sourced from local Italian artisans. One of my favorite examples is the mosaic floor inspired by the lake's reflections, created by Milan-based specialists Fantini Mosaici.
Ingredient-focused Food
How many times have you seen a menu broken down into appetizers, entrees, and desserts? It's so common that it's easy to forget there are other ways to approach a meal. Villa Lario's menu is instead categorized by ingredients.
With each new season, the chef and his team choose five ingredients from specialty regions across Italy . They then create three dishes centered around each ingredient, all of which you can order as an appetizer or entree.
On my most recent visit, for example, one of the ingredients selected was mais biancoperla — a type of white corn used to make polenta — from the northeastern region of Veneto. Some of the dishes highlighting the mais included a delicious polenta gnocchi with asparagus and baby squid and a pork loin with polenta and bok choy. The idea is that each dish on the menu allows diners to experience one of Italy's homegrown ingredients in a unique way.
Access to All Things Lake Como
Of course, one of the many things that makes the hotel so spectacular is its location. With a ferry stop less than a five-minute walk from the villa, it's an ideal spot for exploring the lake. Even better, it means there's no need to rent a car. If you're brave enough to drive on the narrow, winding roads, a car could be useful for getting off the beaten path, but in my experience, the ferry is perfectly convenient.
It's only a few stops to some of the area's most charming towns , like quiet Torno, colorful Varenna, and ever-popular Bellagio. Plus, this isn't your average ferry — it's the next best thing to a private boat tour (though the hotel can arrange that, if you'd prefer). Sure, the ride may take some time if you're heading far up the lake, but with all of the surrounding beauty, you won't want it to end.

In the northwest corner of Italy , lazing peacefully at the foot of the Swiss Alps lies the vast and beautiful Lake Como.
The Y-shaped lake has long been topping lists of the best places to visit in Italy, and for good reason.
The lake is not only a gorgeous natural wonder, but its banks are lined with picturesque old towns and villages that offer fairytale scenery, gorgeous lakefront promenades, and exceptional views.
We think it’s a perfect spot for a romantic getaway.
With so many towns around Lake Como, it can be a bit daunting to try and choose which you would like to see.
Or if you’re wondering where to stay in Lake Como, you’ve come to the right place.
We’ve made a list of our top ten Lake Como towns, so you can start planning your trip to this beautiful region.
Here are the 10 Best Towns In Lake Como
Below you will find the 10 best towns on Lake Como in Northern Italy. Our two favorites by far are Bellagio and Varenna.
We stayed in Bellagio and it was a perfect base for us.
1. Bellagio
The town of Bellagio lies in a famously stunning location right on the peninsula that divides the three branches of Lake Como, Italy.
It is a beautiful town with a rich history stretching back thousands of years and is without a doubt the most well-known town in the area.
It is often considered the best town to stay in Lake Como, and whilst smaller in size than Mennaggio this is where we prefer staying ourselves.
Also referred to as the ‘ pearl of Lake Como ’, Bellagio is classy, glamorous, and frankly relatively expensive.
It’s also a hotspot for tourists (for good reason), so it tends to be relatively busy with a bustling atmosphere.
The town is veined with steep and narrow streets and alleyways that wind gracefully amongst the old buildings.
Gorgeous cobbled streets and gentle staircases slope down toward the lake, ensuring incredible views while you walk around the town.
The quaint streets are lined with flowers, ivy-covered balconies , and buildings in an array of pastel colors. There is also a selection of great shops and restaurants in the town.
Whilst the town itself is stunning, the amazing panoramic views it offers are even better.
What To Do In Bellagio
Amongst other activities, visitors can spend time walking the picturesque streets , strolling along the waterfront promenade , admiring the Villa Melzi gardens , or taking a kayaking tour .
There are numerous boat trips available. Take a leisurely ferry cruise around the lake or opt for a speedboat tour to get up close and personal with the stunning scenery.
For outdoor enthusiasts, there is an interesting Devil’s Bridge Tour . Discover the stories behind the witches of the “Devil’s Bridge,” nestled in the beautiful Alpine scenery. The tour lasts for 2 hours.
Spend the day lounging on the sand on a beach or exploring Bellagio’s many piazzas with a delicious cup of cappuccino. Experience Bellagio like the locals do – swimming in the lake or taking part in an Italian cooking class .
Where To Eat In Bellagio
- Whilst you are in town, do make sure that you sit down for a meal at La Grotta . It was a local recommendation and we loved it so much that we went back for return meals.
- If you have transport, you might also like to book a table at Trattoria_Baita_Belvedere where you can get lovely views over the lake.
You can read our full travel guide on what to do and see in Bellagio here.
How to Get to Bellagio
- Our preferred way to get to Bellagio is by car. There are several small roads that lead into Bellagio from different directions, so it can be easily reached from Milan (the drive will take around 1 hour 30 minutes) or other nearby cities. It is also easy to rent a car .
- Alternatively, you can take a train (1 hour) or a bus to Varenna and then catch the ferry (15-20 minutes) over to Bellagio. Book your train tickets here.
- You can also take the hydrofoil ferry from Como to Bellagio. This trip will take around 45 – 60 minutes.
How Long To Stay For
Whilst you can easily explore this town in just a few hours , we recommend you stay for longer.
A typical stay in Bellagio should be no less than two days , but if you’re looking to really explore the town and its surroundings, then 3-4 days would be much less rushed.
Where to Stay in Bellagio
Our top pick of where to stay in Lake Como is Bellagio, it is just such a sweet little town, and in my opinion, it is the best town on Lake Como (don’t miss seeing this one!).
Also, check out our list of the best Lake Como luxury hotels here. Yes, luxury, cause you do deserve it, right?

Originally a traditional fishing village , Varenna is a humble, quiet, little town that is far less touristy than some of the other towns on the lake.
The town is quaint and rustic and offers a more authentic window into the life of Como Lake locals. In my opinion, it is definitely the prettiest out of all the Lake Como villages.
It’s famous for its brightly colored houses and villas, as well as its peaceful atmosphere. We’ll be honest, there isn’t a whole lot to do in Varenna, but that’s part of its charm!
This town is my pick if you are after a romantic escape.
What To Do In Varenna
Visitors can walk through its streets and admire the beauty, walk along the lakeside boardwalk, lounge by and swim in the lake , or hike up to Castello di Vezio , an 11th-century castle.
The hike up is beautiful and offers views across the expansive lake to Bellagio.
You can also pay a small fee to enter the beautiful Villa Monastero , whilst you can enter the villa, and the grounds are lovely to explore.
Varenna is full of unique places to explore, and a walking and food tour is the perfect way to experience them.
Explore Lake Como’s banks with a small-group walking tour from Varenna . Enjoy a nature walk, spot local wildlife, and learn about bird species. Walk the ‘Greenway of the Patriarchs,’ visit the ‘fiumelatte’ and Villa Monastero’s gardens.
- Recommended restaurants to have a meal at includes Al Prato Restaurant (not very kid-friendly, but yummy meals), Il Cavatappi , and Albergo Milano (for dinner with glorious views).
- For a casual no-fuss meal with kids , our meals at Bar Il Molo were not too bad (nothing impressive but good).
- For an extra special experience, you can also enjoy a 4-course meal at a local’s house (it also includes a cooking demonstration). Book the local dining experience here .
How to Get to Varenna
- The easiest and most popular way to get there is by train . You can take a train to Varenna-Esino station, which is just over an hour away. Book your train tickets here.
- You can also rent a car for the drive from the airport to Varenna, though this can be a bit complicated due to the winding mountain roads. It could take around 1 hour and 30 min by car.
- Alternatively, you can head to Como and catch the ferry from Como to Varenna (around 60 min).
Although it’s possible to tour this town within a couple of hours , we suggest extending your stay.
A typical sojourn in Varenna ought to be at least two days , but if you want to thoroughly discover the town and its environs, it’s advisable to stay for 3-4 days to avoid feeling rushed.
Where to Stay in Varenna
Varenna is the prettiest town in my opinion, so it is the perfect place for those looking for a romantic escape .
It is small in size and has LOTS of stairs to get around, so might not be the best option for families with little kids though.
Here is your easy reference guide to the most popular hotels in Varenna.
1. Hotel Royal Victoria (4-Star)
Our recommendation – if you can afford it. Hotel Royal Victoria is a beautiful 4-star luxury hotel .
The hotel also has a prime location close to the town center and the ferry port, making it easy to explore the area.
It has a swimming pool and a wellness center with a sauna and a steam bath.
Some rooms have a balcony with a view across the lake . Suitable for couples.
Overall, Hotel Royal Victoria is a highly-rated hotel and could be a great choice for your stay in Varenna.
Click here to check rates and availability at Hotel Royal Victoria
2. Hotel Olivedo (3-Star)
Hotel Olivedo is a cheaper alternative for those who are looking for something pretty but don’t mind staying in 3-star hotels .
Some rooms have a balcony with views of the lake.
The hotel features a restaurant, a bar, and a terrace overlooking the lake.
It is also conveniently located near the ferry dock, which provides easy access to other towns on Lake Como.
Again only suitable for couples.
Click to see if there is a room available at Hotel Olivedo here .
3. Menaggio
Located directly across the lake from Varenna, Mennagio is one of the largest towns on the lake and is often considered by visitors to be the most beautiful.
Due to its size and abundance of accommodation options, Menaggio is often used by those visiting Lake Como as a base from which to explore the surrounding towns and areas.
It is one of the best towns around Lake Como for those traveling with young kids.
Once a walled city in medieval times , Menaggio is gorgeous and soaked with history.
What To Do In Menaggio
It’s well worth hiking up the steep steps to the beautiful older part of the town , where you’ll find the dilapidated remains of the original city wall.
There are also some good hiking trails with incredible views that start from the nearby Breglia .
Spend time wandering through the gorgeous quaint streets , and soaking up the views on the elegant lakefront promenade that is lined with palm trees and flower beds.
If you’re looking for an area with a lively vibe during your time at the lake, Menaggio is a great option.
Piazza Garibaldi , with its 19th-century architecture, is the vibrant hub of Menaggio, filled with bars, restaurants, and cafes.
The town has a great atmosphere, and you can generally find some great live entertainment!
Where to Stay in Menaggio
Menaggio is in my opinion not the prettiest town to stay in, but it is a great option for families. You can use a stroller around the town and there is also the lido, where you can spend your days swimming with your kids as well.
Many travelers love staying in Menaggio because it is easy to visit Belaggio and Varenna from here.
Popular hotel options include:
- Hotel Bellavista: The most popular hotel in Menaggio. It is lakefront and in a central position as well. It has a swimming pool which is fabulous. The hotel is 3-star and has rooms suitable for single or double occupancy. Click here to check availability at Hotel Bellavista .
- Hotel Garni Corona: Another 3-star hotel in town. This one is situated with easy access to public transport, restaurants, and shops. It might not have lake views, but it is an excellent value. They have rooms for couples as well as an option for families of 4 as well. Click here to check their prices .
- Hotel Adler: A cheapie with fairly basic rooms. This hotel is popular as it is affordable and has a swimming pool overlooking Lake Como and the mountains. The hotel has rooms suitable for couples, as well as a room for families of up to 5 people. Click here to check out the photos of Hotel Adler .
Lenno is small and quiet and is one of the lesser-visited, less touristy villages on Lake Como, inhabited predominantly by locals.
It is, however, well known for two things: primarily the Villa del Balbianello, but also its exceptional homemade olive oil.
It might be the most famous town around the lake as it was used as a shooting location for popular films.
The Villa del Balbianello, located at the tip of a small wooded peninsula, is a gorgeous 18th-century villa with stunning terraced gardens.
Its exceptional beauty has earned the villa a part in numerous feature films, such as Casino Royale and Star Wars: Episode II Attack of the Clones .
The Villa del Balbianello isn’t the only thing Lenno has to offer – the town itself is beautiful and certainly worth a visit during your visit to Lake Como.
It’s accessible by boat from the larger villages on the lake, so perhaps enjoy a scenic trip across the water and spend a day in this quaint and authentic town.
Be sure to pick up some olive oil to take home with you or indulge in during your visit to Lake Como.
5. Tremezzo
Tremezzo is another beautiful small town on Lake Como that is mostly known as a picturesque tourist resort, with elegant villas lining its streets.
The vast majority of this quaint and romantic town lies directly on the banks of Lake Como, so navigating it is simple and the sights are all grouped quite close together.
By far the largest attraction to Tremezzo is the incredible Villa Carlotta, a 17th-century neo-classical style villa surrounded by the most gorgeous gardens in the Lake Como area.
The gardens are incredibly diverse, containing over 500 plant species, including bamboo, cacti, palm trees, Japanese maples, and orchids, amongst many others. There is also a great art museum at the villa.
The Monte Crocione hike (eight-hour round-trip) which starts nearby offers amazing views of the lake and the Alps.

Lecco is a beautiful town in Lake Como. With its spectacular views, charming historical sites, and endless outdoor activities it’s no surprise it’s one of the best towns on the lake. The scenery around Lecco is particularly stunning – lush green hillsides stretching as far as the eye can see, with dramatic snow-capped mountains hovering above them.
This provides plenty of opportunities for hiking and trekking, as well as taking a leisurely stroll or bike ride along some of Lake Como’s most picturesque shoreline paths.

Nestled in the mountains, Nesso is an idyllic village located just 20 minutes away from Bellagio.
The town is surrounded by gorgeous countryside and is known for its beautiful lakeside walk and numerous hiking trails.
Those looking to explore the history of Nesso can visit the Church of Santa Maria della Neve and the ruins of Castel Baradello.
For me, Nesso is a great town to visit for an hour or two, but it is not a town that I want to stay in for a few nights.
How to get to Nesso
The easiest way to reach Nesso from Milan is to catch the train to Como, which takes about 1-hour.
From Como, you can catch a C30-bus which will take an additional 45 minutes. Or alternatively, you can catch the ferry – only the slow ferries stop at Nesso.
Bellano is a stunningly beautiful town on Lake Como, located in the center of the lake.

For outdoor activities, visitors can go swimming in the lake or explore some of its many hiking trails .
9. Cernobbio
The picturesque town of Cernobbio is located just 6km from Como and is renowned for its elegance and sophistication.
It is home to one of the most luxurious hotels in Lake Como – Villa d’Este .
What To Do In Cernobbio
Cernobbio offers a variety of activities for visitors. Take a leisurely stroll along the lakeside promenade or explore one of the beautiful gardens .
For some adventure, rent a kayak and paddle out into the lake or hire a bike to explore the surrounding countryside. The area is also home to several golf courses if you’re looking for something a bit different.
If you’re in need of some relaxation, take some time out at one of the town’s spas. Or, if you’re looking to indulge, head to one of the many chic restaurants or cafes and sample some traditional Italian cuisine.
How To Get To Cernobbio
From Como, it takes around 15 minutes to reach Cernobbio by road. You could easily drive yourself, catch a taxi or save some money by taking the bus.
Cernobbio is well worth a visit, but since it’s quite small. We recommend it as a visit for the morning or afternoon, however, if you wish to base yourself here we recommend staying for no more than two days.
The city of Como, offers visitors a wealth of attractions and activities to enjoy.
For those looking to explore the culture and history of the area, there are several great museums and galleries to visit such as the Museo Didattico della Seta and the Casa Museo Volandia.
The city also has some excellent shopping opportunities, restaurants, cafes, bars, and nightclubs to explore.
What To Do In Como
One of the best attractions in Como is the stunning Duomo di Como , which was built between 1396 and 1770 and is one of the most beautiful examples of Italian baroque architecture.
Exploring the picturesque lakefront promenade is also a must-do. Take a leisurely stroll and admire the views over the lake or take a boat trip to explore Como’s many small islands.
For some adventure, rent a bike and cycle around the hills surrounding the city, or take a cable car up to Brunate for some breathtaking views.
The great thing about staying in Como is that you can also easily include some fun day trips from Lake Como to other destinations close by as well.

Best Lake Como Towns FAQs
Here are some answers to some of the most commonly asked questions about which towns to see in Lake Como and where to base yourself.
For us, the best part of Lake Como to visit is mostly the area around the tip of the Peninsula which includes the towns of Bellagio, Varenna, and Menaggio.
Our favorite town to base ourselves is Bellagio, it is also a great town base to visit other towns around the lake. However, if you are after a romantic stay, I would suggest Varenna, and for families, I would suggest Menaggio.
Bellagio and Varenna are two of the most picturesque destinations in Italy. Bellagio is renowned for its cobblestone streets, quaint cafes, luxurious boutiques, and a variety of outdoor activities such as hiking, biking, and boating. Varenna is known for its stunning Villa Monastero, surrounded by lush gardens and home to some of the best seafood restaurants in Italy. So it depends on what you are after. If I had time to see only one of the two towns, I would personally choose Bellagio.
Como is much larger than Bellagio and offers visitors a more dynamic atmosphere. It has countless restaurants, shops, and cultural sites to explore, as well as plenty of activities like watersports, hiking, mountain biking, and boat tours. Bellagio is much smaller and I would describe it as a romantic town Whilst it still has plenty of restaurants, shops, and cafes to explore – it doesn’t compare to what is available in Como. However, the town is adorable and the views over the lake are gorgeous it is easier to hop on a ferry to explore Varenna and Menaggio. Personally, I prefer staying in Bellagio.
Como is much larger than Varenna. The city is also famous for its shopping, dining, and nightlife. Como offers plenty to do throughout the year with festivals and events occurring regularly. If you get bored easily and you love a variety of things to do then Como might be the right choice for you. Varenna is much smaller and is located on the eastern shore of Lake Como. It is known for its picturesque views and lakeside walks, as well as its variety of activities. The town is especially popular with tourists thanks to its boat rides, restaurants, and bars. If you prefer a prettier and more romantic town for some slow days, then Varenna could be the right choice for you.

9 Best Hotels in Lake Como, From Celebrity Favorites to Historic 18th-Century Villas
All products and listings featured on Condé Nast Traveler are independently selected by our editors. If you purchase something through our links, we may earn an affiliate commission.
Few can resist the distinctive magic that radiates from Italy's grandest lake. Virgil called Como “the greatest lake,” and Pliny the Younger had a villa here where he said the porch was “always like spring.” Once home to the gilded palaces of princes, bishops, and painters, it is now the playground of the world's rich (the fictional Roy family from Succession tells you everything you need to know) and famous (George Clooney has owned a villa here for over 20 years). Many of the historic villas lining the lake remain private abodes, while those that have been converted into hotels are revered as some of the grandest in the world.
How we choose the best hotels in Lake Como
Every hotel on this list has been selected independently by our editors and written by a Condé Nast Traveler journalist who knows the destination and has stayed at that property. When choosing hotels, our editors consider both luxury properties and boutique and lesser-known boltholes that offer an authentic and insider experience of a destination. We’re always looking for beautiful design, a great location, and warm service—as well as serious sustainability credentials. We update this list regularly as new hotels open and existing ones evolve.
From unassuming family-run stays to glossy recent arrivals, this is our edit of the best hotels in Lake Como, all reviewed by an expert on the Condé Nast Traveler team. For a private stay, see our pick of the best villas in Lake Como .
Il Sereno Arrow
When it launched a few years ago in Torno, Il Sereno, Lago di Como caused a sensation. It was the first hotel in the area of Lake Como to be designed by a world-renowned architect—and Patricia Urquiola, the Spanish starchitect and a longtime resident of Milan , did a fabulous job. The hotel blends into its surroundings thanks to the “light” building, with its many windows awash with sunlight reflected by the lake. The garden, with around 183 varieties of plants, creates a gorgeous floral landscape that syncs up with the environment. Even the Brazilian quartzite heated infinity pool and the ashwood deck become one with the lake in a continuous line: harmony. From inside the hotel—a Gold List 2024 property—you can often glimpse the waters of the Lario, the other name by which Lake Como is known, an iconic part of Italian culture and the backdrop of Alessandro Manzoni’s 19th-century novel The Betrothed , where star-crossed lovers Renzo and Lucia manage to finally reunite and get married. Il Sereno’s lobby is elegant, soft, and welcoming, filled with the best of Italian design—furniture by Cassina, Moroso, and B&B Italia—as are the 40 rooms, all with a view, and the exquisite vertical garden by Patrick Blanc. The delicious and simple (albeit Michelin-starred) food is courtesy of Raffaele Lenzi and features local freshwater fish and vegetables, served alongside sensational cocktails (even the alcohol-free ones). As if so much contemporary beauty were not enough, there’s still the wooden motorboat, a beautiful Riva, ready to take you around the lake or to Villa Pliniana, a 16th-century palace with another 17 bedrooms—a perfect setting for listening to the music of the villa’s beautiful grand piano while gazing upon the waters of Lago di Como. — Maddalena Fossati
MUSA Lago Di Como
Hugging the manicured shore of Como's west shore, Villa Musa stands proudly—a whitewashed modern villa with only 12 rooms, all with balconies overlooking the handsome backdrop of the lake. Elegant guests arrive by boat at the private jetty or via the meandering road, a 30-minute drive from Como town. Interiors are sleek, with neutral and monochrome furnishings that run throughout the hotel. Bedrooms follow suit: white washed linen bedding, contemporary artwork, white marble bathrooms with a deep bath and spacious shower, cozy seating areas and balconies revealed by heavy curtains that we couldn’t wait to draw every morning. Wake up to the cinematic views dotted with eager paddleboarders and bobbing boats easily lost amongst the glittery morning waters.
Food is a big thing here, which makes sense—the hotel and restaurant are run by two acclaimed Italian chefs, Robert Moretti and Matteo Corridori, after al. Dine at the glass-fronted restaurant or on the outdoor terrace, which has an artistic Italian menu—think poached eggs with carbonara sauce for breakfast. Later, lounge by the lakefront pool, sip a creative cocktail at the makeshift boat bar or unwind in the spa facilities. With only a few guests, it’s a rather relaxing affair. — Sophie Knight
Grand Hotel Tremezzo Arrow
In an increasingly rapacious Italian hotel scene, some iconic family-owned properties retain that made-in-Italy, one-of-a-kind elixir that the bigger players can only dream of. The decadent Grand Hotel Tremezzo is decidedly one of these: It has been in family hands since opening in 1910 and comes with Grand Tour charm in spades. Sitting a little back from Lake Como, looking out onto Bellagio, the Liberty-style building conjures a Grand Budapest Hotel set, an impression that grows when you enter the formal lobby with its sweeping red-carpet staircase, antique gilt-framed mirrors, and marble-encased bathrooms. I also love the flowers in abundance all over the property. But the hotel still manages to feel intimate thanks to its smaller cozy spaces: a cocooning spa with a heated swim-in, swim-out pool and Santa Maria Novella products; an outdoor pool surrounded by a forest of trees and blooming flowers; and tucked-away bars and corner banquettes in the restaurant (be sure to try the gold-leaf risotto). The hotel effortlessly pulls multiple punches, with a covetable shop stocking brands like Bric’s Milano, Borsalino, and Chez Dede, and a beautiful vintage wooden boat for lake excursions and to avoid road traffic. But the true pièce de résistance is the floating pool sitting on the lake—cinematic grandeur incarnate with a Lido-like beachfront, bright orange and white umbrellas, and chic custom loungers. — Ondine Cohane , contributor
Passalacqua Arrow
A historic private villa since 1787, Passalacqua is Lake Como’s newest and most impressive hotel. Expectations ran high at the 2022 unveiling of Grand Hotel Tremezzo’s little sister—which is thrice the size—having been acquired and reimagined by the same owners. The new iteration has been met with much fanfare— features editor for Condé Nast Traveller UK Lydia Bell says it's a “practically faultless creation.” From hand-blown Murano chandeliers to suites with original frescoes and veiling carvings, the devotion to detail is exquisite. As is the swimming terrace.
Mandarin Oriental, Lake Como Arrow
Once the lakefront estate of Italian opera singer Giuditta Pasta, Mandarin Oriental took over this 75-room grand dame in 2018. Milan-based designer Eric Egan made over heavy interiors (also behind the Belmond Hotel Caruso revamp), sharpening the meticulous gardens and floating swimming pool. Mandarin Oriental added a lounge for afternoon tea and a spa in the basement, bringing in Italian chef Massimiliano Blasone to oversee the resort’s restaurants and bars. This was the Mandarin Oriental's first European resort and a rare new arrival on the lake—yet it slotted into the scene seamlessly.
Villa d'Este Arrow
Preposterously and hilariously grand, this is where Elizabeth Taylor came to hide out at the start of her affair with Richard Burton. As the great director Mike Nichols later recalled, so long as she wore a large-ish hat, nobody gave her a second glance. Built in 1568 as a summer residence for a wealthy cardinal with a passion for art, the hotel has an immense 17th-century shelled grotto, decorative gardens lapped by water so clear you can see pebbles fall to the distant bottom, and chefs in high white hats inspecting the engraved glass on bridal tables. In the morning, breakfast of Sicilian cannolis and iced espresso is taken as the sun starts its journey across the lake, settling on a flower-plumed promontory beyond. Boats cut through the water, leaving a fizzing trail behind. Everybody sits and watches—wondering where reality leaves off and dreaming begins.
Grand Hotel Villa Serbelloni Arrow
The only luxury hotel in the picturesque town of Bellagio, this Neoclassical grande dame combines the graces of a gilded past and the easy warmth of a family-run business—and has welcomed generations of distinguished guests since 1873. Villa Serbelloni ticks all the boxes for what you might expect of a patinated palazzo on Lake Como : grand marble staircases, giant crystal chandeliers, a mix of Louis XVI and Art Nouveau furniture, and ornate frescoed ceilings. And the guests, a broad cross-section of international travelers, soak it in: They linger in front of the fireplace in its opulent grand salon; tread softly through vast, unoccupied rooms filled with period pieces, and tuck themselves into the wooded American Bar for a nightcap or two. For a reprieve from all that antiquity, there's always the palm-fringed lakeside pool and the garden with its subtropical plants and manicured hedges, which offer the perfect counterpoint—and imposing views.
Villa Pliniana Arrow
A 16th century Renaissance estate once visited by Napoleon, Byron, and Liszt, the seven-suite Villa Pliniana emerged in August 2016 from a renovation that mixes old-world with the new—think terrazzo floors and gold-leaf mirrors paired with modern furniture from icons like Giò Ponti and Le Corbusier. The location, set on 18 waterfront acres, is hard to beat, but the amenities are not too shabby, either: Guests who book the villa have access to a personal chef, spa, swimming pool, concierge, and even a private helipad to make getting to and from just a little bit easier (Pliniana is normally accessed via boat; sister property Il Sereno is a half mile away). Spanish architect and Villa Pliniana designer Patricia Urquiola's tip? Angle for the room under the terrace, where you're right on the water and have your own deck. "It's like a secret room," she says. —Hot List 2017
Villa Lario
With 18 suites (all with views over the lake) accessed sharply from Como's one road, this place feels definitively private, set apart, very much on its own picturesque high pinnacle hanging over the water. Part of a 19th-century property previously owned by the Lombardi family, it has something no other five-star hotel around here can quite claim: a very secluded pontoon that guests can swim off directly, bothered by nothing but the occasional boat dropping somebody off for lunch. (Inexplicably, most hotels don't encourage swimming in Como itself). It's worth coming to eat (just-caught fish and tomatoes from the hotel gardens) even if you don't stay, but there is something particularly authentic about this side of the lake and it would feel a shame to not sleep here, too.

Best Things to Do in Lake Como You Can’t Miss
1. wander through the streets of bellagio.
Bellagio is one of my all-time favorite towns in Lake Como . With its picturesque streets, colorful buildings, and stunning views of the lake, it really looks like it came straight from a postcard.
There are many fantastic things to do in Bellagio , but strolling along the winding cobbled pathways just never gets old, and I could happily spend hours doing this every time I visit.
One of my favorite places is the waterfront promenade which is the perfect place to catch your breath and get some peace. It’s especially beautiful when the flowers are in full bloom!
The Old Town of Bellagio is the kind of place where you won’t be able to put your camera away. Traditional Mediterranean buildings in every shade of pink, orange, and yellow, flower-filled balconies, and cozy cafes line the streets, each more beautiful than the last.
This is also where you’ll find Salita Serbelloni, a stunning street that you’ll instantly recognize as it’s among the top things to see in Lake Como.
It features in every other picture you’ll see from this part of Italy, but there’s nothing like seeing it with your own eyes.
2. Tour the famous Villa del Balbianello
Both Star Wars and James Bond have used Villa del Balbianello as a filming location, which is a testament to how incredible this centuries-old mansion is.
Located on the lakefront in the tiny village of Lenno, Villa del Balbianello is oh-so-elegant inside and is home to perfectly maintained gardens, so it’s no surprise that it’s become a popular wedding venue.
You can also visit the inside of the villa if you’re interested in history and architecture.
But even if you don’t go inside, a stroll around its gardens is one of the best things to do in Lake Como. You’ll find centuries-old trees, beautiful flowers, and stunning views of the lake from different vantage points.
And let’s not forget about that famous balcony overlooking the lake, where you can channel your inner Anakin Skywalker or James Bond. It was so unreal to see it in person and I definitely recommend adding this to your Lake Como itinerary .
3. Discover the town of Varenna
Towns like Varenna almost look too amazing to be real, so much so that I felt like I was living in a dream the entire time I was there. For a town so small, you can surprisingly still find lots of things to do in Varenna .
Villa Monastero is Varenna’s biggest claim to fame, but this small village brings so much more to the table.
My personal favorite is the Passeggiata degli Innamorati, a short little walkway right along the water’s edge that you have to check out.
Other spots to explore include the Villa Cipressi and the Church of St. George, and if you’re feeling like hitting the great outdoors, you can hike up to the thousand-year-old Castello di Vezio, but I have more on that a little later.
Even if you’re short on time, a quick visit to the Old Town and lunch on the waterfront is a wonderful way to spend a few hours.
My favorite place to get some drinks and appetizers is at Bar Il Molo, which has an amazing terrace overlooking the lake.
4. Explore Villa Carlotta
The only spot that I think can rival Villa del Balbianello is the regal Villa Carlotta , a huge three-story property with its very own botanical gardens in Tremezzo.
Much like Villa del Balbianello, Villa Carlotta has been renovated into a museum filled with sculptures, paintings, and ornate furniture from the last few centuries.
But the real draw of Villa Carlotta is its expansive gardens. They’re much larger than other villas in Lake Como and have an incredible collection of flowers and plants from around the world.
Make sure to stop at the lakeside gates to witness one of the most jaw-dropping views of Lake Como. It’s no wonder the original owners chose this location for their summer house!
Getting tickets to Villa Carlotta is easy and can be done at the entrance or online. The ticket includes the gardens and the villa, so you can explore at your own pace.
5. Take a ferry ride across Lake Como
One of my favorite memories from my trips to Lake Como is taking a public ferry ride across the lake. It’s definitely the best way to see all the different towns and charming villas along the shore.
All of the main towns are connected by frequent ferries, so moving from place to place is quite straightforward and usually pretty quick.
Not to mention that it’s super affordable! Shorter routes like Bellagio to Varenna can cost as little as €5, and even if you’re traveling from Como to Bellagio which is almost 2 hours, it’ll only set you back around €10.
You can check the official Navigazione Laghi website for the schedules and fares, and I also recommend buying your tickets online, especially during the peak season.
6. Stroll around Menaggio
Menaggio is just as picturesque as the likes of Bellagio and Varenna but is noticeably quieter and has a lovely laidback way of life. It’s the perfect place to go if you want to relax and enjoy some peace.
The town features a lovely promenade with views of the lake and mountains, perfect for an afternoon walk. You can also find excellent restaurants serving up delicious Italian cuisine in Menaggio.
One of my favorite things to do in Menaggio is to sit at one of the cafes along the waterfront, especially around Piazza Guiseppe Garibaldi, and take in the stunning views while sipping on an Aperol Spritz. It’s pure bliss!
There’s not as much to do in Menaggio as in some of the neighboring towns, but that’s part of why it’s so peaceful and easygoing.
7. Tour Villa Monastero
Varenna’s most popular attraction, Villa Monastero is a must-visit when in Lake Como. This former monastery has been transformed into a museum and botanical garden, making it an ideal spot for history lovers and nature enthusiasts.
While the museum is absolutely worth visiting, it was the gardens that really took my breath away. Stretching for almost 2 km (1.25 miles), every corner of the gardens is immaculate, vibrant, and steeped in history.
Strolling through the gardens was undoubtedly one of my favorite things to do in Lake Como!
Even if you’re not usually one for museums, I highly recommend visiting Villa Monastero for its incredible gardens alone.
However, if you have the time, I suggest buying the combined ticket to visit both the villa and the gardens for a well-rounded experience.
8. Take a walk through Orrido di Bellano
One of the most unique and lesser-known spots in Lake Como is Orrido di Bellano, a natural gorge formed by the Pioverna River.
The walk through the gorge is truly breathtaking as you follow a wooden walkway through tunnels, over bridges, and past waterfalls. It’s unlike anything else you’ll see in Lake Como and definitely worth a visit if you’re in the area.
What I found remarkable about Orrido di Bellano was how close it is to Bellano town, as it feels like it’s tucked away miles from the center. In reality, a 5-minute stroll from the heart of the town will get you right to the entrance.
Though Orrido di Bellano is quite well known, many visitors often overlook it, and I can’t understand why. It’s also just a 5-minute train ride from Varenna, so it’s very easy to get to.
9. Head out on a private boat tour
Although seeing Lake Como from a ferry or the shore is fantastic, nothing beats experiencing it on a private boat tour. It’s undoubtedly one of the best ways to take in all the beauty and charm of this stunning lake.
You can rent a boat yourself (most boats don’t require a license) or hire a driver to take you around.
Like most private tours, these tend to be significantly more expensive than classic guided trips, but if you’re traveling with a group, it can be quite affordable.
Aside from the obvious beauty, one of my favorite things about taking a private boat tour is that you have complete control over your itinerary. You can stop wherever and whenever you want for photos or to take a dip in the crystal-clear waters.
There are lots of options, such as this private 2-hour tour with your own captain, or you can don the captain’s hat yourself and rent a boat for 2 hours which gives you the ultimate freedom to explore on your own.
If you’re staying in Bellagio, Varenna, Menaggio, or Tremezzo, this luxurious Lake Como boat tour will be the best option for you.
Alternatively, you can also find a bunch of skippers offering private excursions from each of the main towns, so it’s possible to do this activity at the last minute if it’s not too busy.
10. Explore the ruins of the Castello di Vezio
In terms of more outdoorsy things to do at Lake Como, it’s hard to beat the hike to the Castello di Vezio. The trail will take you around 30 minutes to complete, so it’s a relatively short but steep hike.
Once you reach the top, you’ll be greeted by spooky ghost statues scattered around the grounds, 12th-century ruins, and some of Lake Como’s best views. Anyone with an interest in wildlife will also enjoy checking out the collection of birds of prey that reside here.
This castle has lived many lives, including serving as a military outpost during World War II, and you can read up on the background through the information boards at the top.
As it’s a steep hike, I recommend wearing suitable shoes and bringing plenty of water. I stupidly did this hike in sandals and it was horrible to get down on the slippery paths so I wouldn’t recommend that!
11. Stroll through the botanical gardens at Villa Cipressi
Another stunning garden to explore on Lake Como is at Villa Cipressi in Varenna. This gorgeous villa has a beautiful terraced garden with incredible views of the lake.
Villa Cipressi now operates as a hotel and it’s definitely one of the most stunning Lake Como hotels with lake views!
The building itself dates back to the 15th century and retains all its old-world charm through its outdoor patio, luxury guestrooms, and traditional decor. Sadly, only hotel guests are permitted inside the property.
However, the botanical gardens are open to the public and are just as sensational, packed with hundreds of plant species in the prettiest of surroundings. It’s a lovely place to spend an afternoon, especially if you’re looking for a quieter spot away from the busy towns.
12. Try some watersports on the lake
Lake Como is the perfect place for a relaxing getaway, but it also has plenty to offer for travelers who like to get their adrenaline pumping.
Wakeboarding, windsurfing, canoeing, and stand-up paddleboarding are just some of the watersports offered along the lake, and the calm waters make it much less daunting for first-timers.
When the warmer weather comes around, towns and villages like Bellagio, Varenna, and Lenno operate a ton of exciting watersports, and many hotels have the likes of jet skis and kayaks available to rent.
This is a fantastic way to experience the lake from a different perspective and add some excitement to your trip.
13. Enjoy a funicular ride up to Brunate
The town of Como is linked to the nearby village of Brunate by a funicular railway that’s been in operation since the late 1800s.
Brunate lies 500 meters (1,640 ft) above Como, making it an excellent spot for panoramic views of the lake and surrounding mountains.
The journey itself only takes around 7 minutes, and during peak seasons, it runs roughly every 15 minutes. After you land in Brunate, you’ll have the Phare de Volta lighthouse and quaint churches like Parrocchia Sant’Andrea Apostolo to explore.
We opted to visit for sunset and I couldn’t recommend it enough. The sky lit up in the prettiest shades of pink, orange, and yellow, with the lake sparkling below us. It was a truly magical experience!
14. Explore the historic center of Como
Como is the capital of the Province of Como, and I’ve always found this city to be terribly underrated.
It’s much larger than cute villages like Bellagio and Varenna, but it has so much to offer in terms of history, culture, and nightlife.
You’ll have no problem catching a ferry to Como for the day, as it boasts fantastic connections to most of the smaller towns, but spending a few nights here is also definitely worthwhile.
The exquisite Como Cathedral is the centerpiece of the city, so a visit here is a must to see frescoes and stained glass windows that’ll blow you away.
Other things to do in Como include visiting Villa Olmo, a palatial property that looks more like a royal residence, plus the Basilica of San Fedele.
Como also has a direct train connection to Milan, so it’s an easy day trip from the fashion capital of Italy if you’re based there.
15. Attend an Italian cooking class
Without a shadow of a doubt, one of the best things to do in Lake Como is to take part in a cooking class.
As well as being a wonderful opportunity to learn the craft of Italian cooking, these classes are such a blast and usually include some local wines to enjoy alongside your home-cooked meal.
This tour equips you with all the skills you’ll need to craft your own pasta at home, and you’ll also learn how to whip up a mean tiramisu. The class is usually only made up of around 10 to 12 people and runs from your local chef’s own home.
An Italian dining experience wouldn’t be complete without an aperitif, and these classes generally offer some prosecco to sip on before your meal, plus some light bites and nibbles.
16. Visit Villa Melzi Gardens
As you’ve probably gathered by now, Lake Como has an abundance of high-end villas and immaculate gardens, and Villa Melzi is one that I instantly fell in love with.
Just a quick stroll from the center of Bellagio, Villa Melzi is actually one of the newer villas in the area, having been constructed in the early 1800s.
The interior of the villa is off-limits to visitors, but the museum, chapel, and gardens are open to the public from March to November each year.
From the Romanesque and Egyptian statues to the serene Japanese pond and the meandering walkways, these gardens are just magical and really encapsulate the beauty of Lake Como.
Bellagio can be quite hectic during the summer months, and Villa Melzi will check all your boxes when you’re looking for somewhere that’s easy to reach but away from the hustle and bustle of the main streets.
17. Eat in a lakeside restaurant
You won’t have to go far to enjoy dinner with a view in the Lake Como area, as there are more waterfront eateries than I’d even attempt to count.
Classic Italian fare like wood-fired pizzas, arancini, burrata, and bruschetta are available in most restaurants, so you’ll be spoiled for choice no matter where you pick.
Having said that, it’s not uncommon for bistros and cafes with incredible locations to be lacking in quality when it comes to the food, so I have a few suggestions for you to ensure you won’t have to sacrifice on views or taste.
For an upscale experience, make sure to visit Bar Giardino at Hotel Royal Victoria in Varenna. The view from the outdoor terrace is simply incredible, and the food is equally as impressive.
Or for a more casual option, head to Bar Il Molo , just a few steps from Hotel Royal Victoria. I must admit, the food here can be a bit of a hit or miss, but the view from their terrace and the cocktails are top-notch.
Ristorante La Punta is another favorite of mine, and it’s located right on the tip of Bellagio’s peninsula, making it the perfect place for a sunset dinner. With its elegant decor and delicious seafood dishes, this restaurant is a must-visit while in Lake Como.
18. Take a dip in the lake
It goes without saying that one of the most enjoyable things to do in Lake Como is to dive into the refreshing cobalt-blue waters.
Lake Como is a lovely place for a dip, especially when you’ve spent the day under the sweltering sunshine. After all, Italy is no stranger to scorching summer temperatures!
There are many hotels perched right along the waterside with their own stretch of private land, but there are a number of designated swimming areas in most towns.
Unless somewhere is marked as safe for swimming or is a beach area, it’s best to avoid jumping in, as some patches of the lake have less favorable swimming conditions than others.
Some gorgeous spots for a quick splash include Lido di Bellagio Beach Club, Spiaggia Pubblica di Bellagio, or Lido di Varenna.
Where to Stay in Lake Como
The most popular areas for accommodation in Lake Como are Bellagio, Varenna, and Como. These towns have the most tourist attractions and offer great accommodation options ranging from luxurious villas to budget-friendly guesthouses.
Varenna and Como are especially great because they have direct train connections to Milan, so it’s very easy to get to. However, keep in mind that Como is very far from the middle part of the lake where most attractions are located so you’ll spend a lot of time commuting.
If you want to know more about the best places to stay around the lake, check out my in-depth guide about where to stay in Lake Como . It covers all of the best areas and gives you some insider tips on where to find the best deals.

LAKE COMO, ITALY the best things to do
Lake Como , locally known as Lago di Como or Lario , is the third largest Italian lake (after Lake Garda and Lake Maggiore). Located at the foot of the Alps , Lake Como offers some of the most romantic and picturesque scenery in Italy.
Its characteristic inverted-Y shape comes from the melting of glaciers combined with the erosive action of the Adda river. This led to the formation of the two southern branches that culminate in the cities of Como and Lecco , in the middle of which lies the famous Bellagio .
The distances between towns are such that you can visit at least 3 or 4 villages by local transportation, and you can lose yourself among enchanting villas and gardens , relax with a private boat tour or on your favorite beach , and even rejuvenate with a healthy nature walk .
Ready to go? Enjoy your tour of Lake Como, Italy!
Sights & things to do
Visit the pearls of lake como many destinations to discover.
The perimeter of Lake Como is dotted with charming villages and towns where there is no shortage of opportunities to shop, take nature walks , visit beautiful villas and botanical gardens , or participate in unforgettable experiences .
The most popular – and therefore busiest – destinations are definitely Bellagio , Varenna , and Como , but don’t limit yourself to visiting only the best-known locations!
Here is a brief overview of my favorite towns in Lake Como : I recommend that you spend some time reading the guides I have put together so that you can find the destinations that best suit your interests.
Como , the main city of Lake Como in Italy, enchants with its perfect mix of culture, architecture and natural beauty . The city center is compact and flat , and major attractions and the lakefront are within walking distance from the train stations .
Como's medieval walls enclose charming alleys and squares that are home to traditional restaurants and stores , markets selling local produce, and impressive houses of worship such as Como Cathedral .
In the lakefront area, where the pier is located, you can visit the temple to Alessandro Volta and the large park surrounding the neoclassical Villa Olmo . On the opposite bank, you can take the funicular railway to Brunate .
If you love nature trails, you'll find several easy ones within Spina Verde Park . From Como you can easily reach the other towns on Lake Como by bus and ferry .
Bellagio , a vibrant gem an hour or two away from Como, dazzles with its lively town center , bustling with typical stores and colorful, step-laden alleys in true Italian style.
Explore the Park of Villa Serbelloni and the Gardens of Villa Melzi , and then stroll through the charming hamlets of Pescallo and San Giovanni , each offering a glimpse into Bellagio's authentic charm.
Reach Punta Spartivento to enjoy stunning views of the three branches of Lake Como and central area towns (such as Varenna , which can be reached in 15-20 minutes by boat).
Varenna , a short boat ride from Bellagio and easily accessible by train from Milan , offers a charming lakeside promenade - the famous Passeggiata degli Innamorati - that leads to the small bay of Riva Grande , where you will find plenty of cafes, restaurants and local craft stores.
Spend a few hours exploring the botanical wonders of Villa Monastero and Villa Cipressi , whose gardens weave a tapestry of colors along the lakefront.
Nature lovers can take rejuvenating hikes to historic sites such as Castle of Vezio or along the Sentiero del Viandante , experiencing incredible views and discovering local history.
Tremezzina is the union of several large hamlets (including Ossuccio , Lenno and Tremezzo ) each with its own attractions and features, which I invite you to discover in the dedicated guide.
Among other things, Tremezzina is home to two of the most beautiful villas on Lake Como: Villa Balbianello , a museum and set for international films and weddings, and Villa Carlotta , a museum and botanical garden.
If you have a few hours to spare, explore the area along the Lake Como Greenway , an easy walk that also passes through Tremezzina's oldest villages and places of historical and religious interest. The mountains above Tremezzina also offer many more challenging trails.
Menaggio has a lively town center, which develops around Piazza Garibaldi and leads to the elegant and long lakefront , where there are several bars and restaurants.
Explore the characteristic hamlet of Loveno , home to Villa Vigoni , and Nobiallo , a picturesque fishing village.
In addition, if you want to taste the true flavors of the area, you can reach the typical huts and farmhouses of Val Sanagra and Monte Grona with walks that start a short distance from the historic center.
Lecco , less frequented by international tourists than other Lake Como’s towns, is an ideal destination for those who want to experience Lake Como away from the typical high season crowds .
The city, perfectly connected to Milan by train , boasts one of the most beautiful walks along the lakefront. Its historic center, full of bars and restaurants, encloses buildings with obvious traces of its history.
The city is famous for its various ‘ Manzonian locations ‘ mentioned in the renowned Italian historical novel The Betrothed by Alessandro Manzoni .

TAKE A BOAT TOUR Board a boat and enjoy your trip
Boat trips and tours are something that I’d definitely recommend to anyone who wants to experience Lake Como at its best.
Boat tours are basically of two types: public or private . Here’s how they work.
- Public boat service
The local public navigation company ( Navigazione Laghi ) provides several routes that connect all of the most popular towns along Lake Como’s shores, at a convenient price . The ideal service for getting from one city to another during your Lake Como vacation. Learn more about public boat service on Lake Como !
Private boat tours
With a driver at your disposal, you have the chance to choose your favourite itinerary and the length of your cruise. If you are traveling with your better half or with your friends, take a private boat tour and experience Lake Como at your own pace , maybe at sunset and with a fine bottle of prosecco!
RELAX ON A BEACH Beaches in a breathtaking scenery
If you visit Lake Como in the summer, be sure to visit the beautiful beaches on its shores.
Lake Como’s beaches are the perfect place to relax during hot summer days and, in some cases, also offer the opportunity to go sailing or windsurfing (particularly on the northern branch of the lake).
Beaches can be found in every corner of Lake Como, but if you are looking for clean and pure waters , I recommend going to the central and northern parts of the lake.
Of course, the public beaches in the most popular towns are especially busy during the summer, not only by tourists but also by locals.
Therefore, if you want to reserve a cozy spot, you’d better get up early and get to your favorite beach before it is full. Alternatively, reserve your sunbed at one of the lake’s many lidos to experience your day in total comfort.
A few tips for your stay in Lake Como
VISIT A HISTORIC VILLA The best Lake Como's villas and gardens
If you come to Lake Como between mid-March and mid-November, you’ll be able to visit Villa Balbianello , Villa Melzi , Villa Monastero and many other historic mansions.
A paradise for those who love gardens in bloom and magnificent historic residences!
In the summer, these villas very often host classical music events or guided tours that will introduce you to the history of the place and trivia related to the people who lived in the villa or contributed to its construction.
Sometimes these mansions have special openings in the off-season as well, so if you plan to visit Lake Como in winter I recommend that you check their official websites.
Villa Balbianello, Tremezzina
Villa del Balbianello , in Lenno (hamlet of Tremezzina) is one of the most famous and fancy villas on Lake Como.
Not only a location for luxury events and weddings , but also the set of incredible movies such as Star Wars and Casino Royale .
The villa is mainly open from mid-March to end of November , and it’s closed on Mondays and Wednesdays (except on holidays).
Gardens of Villa Melzi, Bellagio
The Gardens of Villa Melzi , in Bellagio, welcome visitors among centuries-old trees, Japanese-style ponds, colorful plants from around the world and more.
Also not to be missed are the distinctive Arab-style temple and the museum , which traces the history of the villa and surrounding area through the centuries of its existence.
Villa Melzi and its gardens, open from March to October and located at a ten-minute walk from Bellagio's town center.
Villa Monastero, Varenna
Villa Monastero , located in Varenna, was once an old monastery that later became a patrician residence.
The villa attracts tourists from all over the world because of its beautiful botanical garden which contains many species of rare plants and stretches for more than a mile along the lake shore.
When visiting this famous villa, you will also have the opportunity to see Casa Museo , a museum that collects four centuries of history in an elegant setting with fine decorations and furnishings.
Villa Carlotta, Tremezzina
Villa Carlotta , in Tremezzo , is surrounded by a vast botanical garden full of ancient trees and exotic plants, palms, rhododendrons and azaleas .
I’d suggest you to visit Villa Carlotta in springtime , during the blossom period. This is definitely the best time to soak up the scents these beautiful gardens can offer!
Villa Carlotta is also famous for its art collection . An important museum original neoclassical furniture, as well as valuable masterpieces by Antonio Canova , Francesco Hayez , and Bertel Thorvaldsen .
TAKE A WALK IN NATURE Discover the lesser-known side of Lake Como
Not everyone knows that the hills surrounding Lake Como hide hundreds of trails of various types and suitable for walkers with varying degrees of experience. In a great many cases, there are typical restaurants along these trails where you can taste the true flavors of the area.
I have just created a section on hikes and walks around Lake Como (continuously being updated) that I invite you to look at. Each route I have described offers information about highlights and facilities you can find along your walk.
Here are some areas and walks you might explore during your stay in Lake Como:
Spina Verde Park (Como area)
Spina Verde Park is a protected forest located southwest of Como , and gathers many sites of panoramic , historical , and natural interest .
The perfect place to escape the hottest hours of summer and taste traditional dishes at one of the area’s huts.
One of the most interesting attractions is the tower of Castello Baradello , which can be reached by following a path that starts from Piazza San Rocco , near the town center, and leads to the tower in about 30 minutes .
Lake Como Greenway (central area)
The Greenway del Lago di Como is a walking route of 11.5 km (7 mi) in one of the most picturesque areas of western Lake Como.
It follows the ancient Via Regina , the road that was built by the Romans to connect Como with territories beyond the Alps.
The Greenway, which passes through the villages of Colonno, Sala Comacina, Tremezzina and Griante , offers splendid views and examples of architecture, villas and gardens (e.g., the unmissable Villa Carlotta ).
A great opportunity for anyone to see Lake Como from a different perspective.
Val Sanagra (central-northern area)
Val Sanagra , also known as Val Senagra, is a vast area rich in flora, fauna and ancient rural settlements included between the municipalities of Menaggio and Grandola ed Uniti.
It takes its name from the stream that flows through the valley and creates beautiful waterfalls often topped by fascinating Romanesque stone bridges .
Val Sanagra is an ideal place to retreat on hot summer days, sheltered from the crowds that characterize Lake Como‘s most popular destinations in high season.
In fact, in addition to offering trails suitable for most people , the valley is also home to a farmhouse where you can taste local products or stay overnight, and an eco-museum for a different kind of day out.
