9 Best Hotels in Lake Como, From Celebrity Favorites to Historic 18th-Century Villas

9 Best Hotels in Lake Como According to CNT Editors

Few can resist the distinctive magic that radiates from Italy's grandest lake. Virgil called Como “the greatest lake,” and Pliny the Younger had a villa here where he said the porch was “always like spring.” Once home to the gilded palaces of princes, bishops, and painters, it is now the playground of the world's rich (the fictional Roy family from Succession tells you everything you need to know) and famous (George Clooney has owned a villa here for over 20 years). Many of the historic villas lining the lake remain private abodes, while those that have been converted into hotels are revered as some of the grandest in the world.

How we choose the best hotels in Lake Como

Every hotel on this list has been selected independently by our editors and written by a Condé Nast Traveler journalist who knows the destination and has stayed at that property. When choosing hotels, our editors consider both luxury properties and boutique and lesser-known boltholes that offer an authentic and insider experience of a destination. We’re always looking for beautiful design, a great location, and warm service—as well as serious sustainability credentials. We update this list regularly as new hotels open and existing ones evolve.

Il Sereno Arrow

When it launched a few years ago in Torno, Il Sereno, Lago di Como caused a sensation. It was the first hotel in the area of Lake Como to be designed by a world-renowned architect—and Patricia Urquiola, the Spanish starchitect and a longtime resident of Milan , did a fabulous job. The hotel blends into its surroundings thanks to the “light” building, with its many windows awash with sunlight reflected by the lake. The garden, with around 183 varieties of plants, creates a gorgeous floral landscape that syncs up with the environment. Even the Brazilian quartzite heated infinity pool and the ashwood deck become one with the lake in a continuous line: harmony. From inside the hotel—a Gold List 2024 property—you can often glimpse the waters of the Lario, the other name by which Lake Como is known, an iconic part of Italian culture and the backdrop of Alessandro Manzoni’s 19th-century novel The Betrothed , where star-crossed lovers Renzo and Lucia manage to finally reunite and get married. Il Sereno’s lobby is elegant, soft, and welcoming, filled with the best of Italian design—furniture by Cassina, Moroso, and B&B Italia—as are the 40 rooms, all with a view, and the exquisite vertical garden by Patrick Blanc. The delicious and simple (albeit Michelin-starred) food is courtesy of Raffaele Lenzi and features local freshwater fish and vegetables, served alongside sensational cocktails (even the alcohol-free ones). As if so much contemporary beauty were not enough, there’s still the wooden motorboat, a beautiful Riva, ready to take you around the lake or to Villa Pliniana, a 16th-century palace with another 17 bedrooms—a perfect setting for listening to the music of the villa’s beautiful grand piano while gazing upon the waters of Lago di Como. — Maddalena Fossati

MUSA Lago Di Como hotel in lake como

MUSA Lago Di Como

Hugging the manicured shore of Como's west shore, Villa Musa stands proudly—a whitewashed modern villa with only 12 rooms, all with balconies overlooking the handsome backdrop of the lake. Elegant guests arrive by boat at the private jetty or via the meandering road, a 30-minute drive from Como town. Interiors are sleek, with neutral and monochrome furnishings that run throughout the hotel. Bedrooms follow suit: white washed linen bedding, contemporary artwork, white marble bathrooms with a deep bath and spacious shower, cozy seating areas and balconies revealed by heavy curtains that we couldn’t wait to draw every morning. Wake up to the cinematic views dotted with eager paddleboarders and bobbing boats easily lost amongst the glittery morning waters.

Food is a big thing here, which makes sense—the hotel and restaurant are run by two acclaimed Italian chefs, Robert Moretti and Matteo Corridori, after al. Dine at the glass-fronted restaurant or on the outdoor terrace, which has an artistic Italian menu—think poached eggs with carbonara sauce for breakfast. Later, lounge by the lakefront pool, sip a creative cocktail at the makeshift boat bar or unwind in the spa facilities. With only a few guests, it’s a rather relaxing affair. — Sophie Knight

Grand Hotel Tremezzo

Grand Hotel Tremezzo Arrow

In an increasingly rapacious Italian hotel scene, some iconic family-owned properties retain that made-in-Italy, one-of-a-kind elixir that the bigger players can only dream of. The decadent Grand Hotel Tremezzo is decidedly one of these: It has been in family hands since opening in 1910 and comes with Grand Tour charm in spades. Sitting a little back from Lake Como, looking out onto Bellagio, the Liberty-style building conjures a  Grand Budapest Hotel  set, an impression that grows when you enter the formal lobby with its sweeping red-carpet staircase, antique gilt-framed mirrors, and marble-encased bathrooms. I also love the flowers in abundance all over the property. But the hotel still manages to feel intimate thanks to its smaller cozy spaces: a cocooning spa with a heated swim-in, swim-out pool and Santa Maria Novella products; an outdoor pool surrounded by a forest of trees and blooming flowers; and tucked-away bars and corner banquettes in the restaurant (be sure to try the gold-leaf risotto). The hotel effortlessly pulls multiple punches, with a covetable shop stocking brands like Bric’s Milano, Borsalino, and Chez Dede, and a beautiful vintage wooden boat for lake excursions and to avoid road traffic. But the true pièce de résistance is the floating pool sitting on the lake—cinematic grandeur incarnate with a Lido-like beachfront, bright orange and white umbrellas, and chic custom loungers. — Ondine Cohane , contributor

best new hotels in europe winner Villa Passalacqua

Passalacqua Arrow

A historic private villa since 1787, Passalacqua is Lake Como’s newest and most impressive hotel. Expectations ran high at the 2022 unveiling of Grand Hotel Tremezzo’s little sister—which is thrice the size—having been acquired and reimagined by the same owners. The new iteration has been met with much fanfare— features editor for Condé Nast Traveller UK Lydia Bell says it's a “practically faultless creation.” From hand-blown Murano chandeliers to suites with original frescoes and veiling carvings, the devotion to detail is exquisite. As is the swimming terrace.

Mandarin Oriental Lago di Como Italy

Mandarin Oriental, Lago di Como Arrow

Once the lakefront estate of Italian opera singer Giuditta Pasta, Mandarin Oriental took over this 75-room grand dame in 2018. Milan-based designer Eric Egan made over heavy interiors (also behind the Belmond Hotel Caruso revamp), sharpening the meticulous gardens and floating swimming pool. Mandarin Oriental added a lounge for afternoon tea and a spa in the basement, bringing in Italian chef Massimiliano Blasone to oversee the resort’s restaurants and bars. This was the Mandarin Oriental's first European resort and a rare new arrival on the lake—yet it slotted into the scene seamlessly.

Villa dEste

Villa d’Este Arrow

Preposterously and hilariously grand, this is where Elizabeth Taylor came to hide out at the start of her affair with Richard Burton. As the great director Mike Nichols later recalled, so long as she wore a large-ish hat, nobody gave her a second glance. Built in 1568 as a summer residence for a wealthy cardinal with a passion for art, the hotel has an immense 17th-century shelled grotto, decorative gardens lapped by water so clear you can see pebbles fall to the distant bottom, and chefs in high white hats inspecting the engraved glass on bridal tables. In the morning, breakfast of Sicilian cannolis and iced espresso is taken as the sun starts its journey across the lake, settling on a flower-plumed promontory beyond. Boats cut through the water, leaving a fizzing trail behind. Everybody sits and watches—wondering where reality leaves off and dreaming begins.

Grand Hotel Villa Serbelloni

Grand Hotel Villa Serbelloni Arrow

The only luxury hotel in the picturesque town of Bellagio, this Neoclassical grande dame combines the graces of a gilded past and the easy warmth of a family-run business—and has welcomed generations of distinguished guests since 1873. Villa Serbelloni ticks all the boxes for what you might expect of a patinated palazzo on Lake Como : grand marble staircases, giant crystal chandeliers, a mix of Louis XVI and Art Nouveau furniture, and ornate frescoed ceilings. And the guests, a broad cross-section of international travelers, soak it in: They linger in front of the fireplace in its opulent grand salon; tread softly through vast, unoccupied rooms filled with period pieces, and tuck themselves into the wooded American Bar for a nightcap or two. For a reprieve from all that antiquity, there's always the palm-fringed lakeside pool and the garden with its subtropical plants and manicured hedges, which offer the perfect counterpoint—and imposing views.

Villa Pliniana Arrow

A 16th century Renaissance estate once visited by Napoleon, Byron, and Liszt, the seven-suite Villa Pliniana emerged in August 2016 from a renovation that mixes old-world with the new—think terrazzo floors and gold-leaf mirrors paired with modern furniture from icons like Giò Ponti and Le Corbusier. The location, set on 18 waterfront acres, is hard to beat, but the amenities are not too shabby, either: Guests who book the villa have access to a personal chef, spa, swimming pool, concierge, and even a private helipad to make getting to and from just a little bit easier (Pliniana is normally accessed via boat; sister property Il Sereno is a half mile away). Spanish architect and Villa Pliniana designer Patricia Urquiola's tip? Angle for the room under the terrace, where you're right on the water and have your own deck. "It's like a secret room," she says. —Hot List 2017

Villa Lario pool

Villa Lario

With 18 suites (all with views over the lake) accessed sharply from Como's one road, this place feels definitively private, set apart, very much on its own picturesque high pinnacle hanging over the water. Part of a 19th-century property previously owned by the Lombardi family, it has something no other five-star hotel around here can quite claim: a very secluded pontoon that guests can swim off directly, bothered by nothing but the occasional boat dropping somebody off for lunch. (Inexplicably, most hotels don't encourage swimming in Como itself). It's worth coming to eat (just-caught fish and tomatoes from the hotel gardens) even if you don't stay, but there is something particularly authentic about this side of the lake and it would feel a shame to not sleep here, too.

Best Things to Do in Lake Como You Can’t Miss

1. wander through the streets of bellagio.

Bellagio is one of my all-time favorite towns in Lake Como . With its picturesque streets, colorful buildings, and stunning views of the lake, it really looks like it came straight from a postcard.

There are many fantastic things to do in Bellagio , but strolling along the winding cobbled pathways just never gets old, and I could happily spend hours doing this every time I visit.

One of my favorite places is the waterfront promenade which is the perfect place to catch your breath and get some peace. It’s especially beautiful when the flowers are in full bloom!

The Old Town of Bellagio is the kind of place where you won’t be able to put your camera away. Traditional Mediterranean buildings in every shade of pink, orange, and yellow, flower-filled balconies, and cozy cafes line the streets, each more beautiful than the last.

This is also where you’ll find Salita Serbelloni, a stunning street that you’ll instantly recognize as it’s among the top things to see in Lake Como.

It features in every other picture you’ll see from this part of Italy, but there’s nothing like seeing it with your own eyes.

2. Tour the famous Villa del Balbianello

Both Star Wars and James Bond have used Villa del Balbianello as a filming location, which is a testament to how incredible this centuries-old mansion is.

Located on the lakefront in the tiny village of Lenno, Villa del Balbianello is oh-so-elegant inside and is home to perfectly maintained gardens, so it’s no surprise that it’s become a popular wedding venue.

You can also visit the inside of the villa if you’re interested in history and architecture.

But even if you don’t go inside, a stroll around its gardens is one of the best things to do in Lake Como. You’ll find centuries-old trees, beautiful flowers, and stunning views of the lake from different vantage points.

And let’s not forget about that famous balcony overlooking the lake, where you can channel your inner Anakin Skywalker or James Bond. It was so unreal to see it in person and I definitely recommend adding this to your Lake Como itinerary .

3. Discover the town of Varenna

Towns like Varenna almost look too amazing to be real, so much so that I felt like I was living in a dream the entire time I was there. For a town so small, you can surprisingly still find lots of things to do in Varenna .

Villa Monastero is Varenna’s biggest claim to fame, but this small village brings so much more to the table.

My personal favorite is the Passeggiata degli Innamorati, a short little walkway right along the water’s edge that you have to check out.

Other spots to explore include the Villa Cipressi and the Church of St. George, and if you’re feeling like hitting the great outdoors, you can hike up to the thousand-year-old Castello di Vezio, but I have more on that a little later.

Even if you’re short on time, a quick visit to the Old Town and lunch on the waterfront is a wonderful way to spend a few hours.

My favorite place to get some drinks and appetizers is at Bar Il Molo, which has an amazing terrace overlooking the lake.

4. Explore Villa Carlotta

The only spot that I think can rival Villa del Balbianello is the regal Villa Carlotta , a huge three-story property with its very own botanical gardens in Tremezzo.

Much like Villa del Balbianello, Villa Carlotta has been renovated into a museum filled with sculptures, paintings, and ornate furniture from the last few centuries.

But the real draw of Villa Carlotta is its expansive gardens. They’re much larger than other villas in Lake Como and have an incredible collection of flowers and plants from around the world.

Make sure to stop at the lakeside gates to witness one of the most jaw-dropping views of Lake Como. It’s no wonder the original owners chose this location for their summer house!

Getting tickets to Villa Carlotta is easy and can be done at the entrance or online. The ticket includes the gardens and the villa, so you can explore at your own pace.

5. Take a ferry ride across Lake Como

One of my favorite memories from my trips to Lake Como is taking a public ferry ride across the lake. It’s definitely the best way to see all the different towns and charming villas along the shore.

All of the main towns are connected by frequent ferries, so moving from place to place is quite straightforward and usually pretty quick.

Not to mention that it’s super affordable! Shorter routes like Bellagio to Varenna can cost as little as €5, and even if you’re traveling from Como to Bellagio which is almost 2 hours, it’ll only set you back around €10.

You can check the official Navigazione Laghi website for the schedules and fares, and I also recommend buying your tickets online, especially during the peak season.

6. Stroll around Menaggio

Menaggio is just as picturesque as the likes of Bellagio and Varenna but is noticeably quieter and has a lovely laidback way of life. It’s the perfect place to go if you want to relax and enjoy some peace.

The town features a lovely promenade with views of the lake and mountains, perfect for an afternoon walk. You can also find excellent restaurants serving up delicious Italian cuisine in Menaggio.

One of my favorite things to do in Menaggio is to sit at one of the cafes along the waterfront, especially around Piazza Guiseppe Garibaldi, and take in the stunning views while sipping on an Aperol Spritz. It’s pure bliss!

There’s not as much to do in Menaggio as in some of the neighboring towns, but that’s part of why it’s so peaceful and easygoing.

View of Menaggio from the lake

7. Tour Villa Monastero

Varenna’s most popular attraction, Villa Monastero is a must-visit when in Lake Como. This former monastery has been transformed into a museum and botanical garden, making it an ideal spot for history lovers and nature enthusiasts.

While the museum is absolutely worth visiting, it was the gardens that really took my breath away. Stretching for almost 2 km (1.25 miles), every corner of the gardens is immaculate, vibrant, and steeped in history.

Strolling through the gardens was undoubtedly one of my favorite things to do in Lake Como!

Even if you’re not usually one for museums, I highly recommend visiting Villa Monastero for its incredible gardens alone.

However, if you have the time, I suggest buying the combined ticket to visit both the villa and the gardens for a well-rounded experience.

Villa Monastero in Varenna, Lake Como

8. Take a walk through Orrido di Bellano

One of the most unique and lesser-known spots in Lake Como is Orrido di Bellano, a natural gorge formed by the Pioverna River.

The walk through the gorge is truly breathtaking as you follow a wooden walkway through tunnels, over bridges, and past waterfalls. It’s unlike anything else you’ll see in Lake Como and definitely worth a visit if you’re in the area.

What I found remarkable about Orrido di Bellano was how close it is to Bellano town, as it feels like it’s tucked away miles from the center. In reality, a 5-minute stroll from the heart of the town will get you right to the entrance.

Though Orrido di Bellano is quite well known, many visitors often overlook it, and I can’t understand why. It’s also just a 5-minute train ride from Varenna, so it’s very easy to get to.

Waterfall in Orrido di Bellano

9. Head out on a private boat tour

Although seeing Lake Como from a ferry or the shore is fantastic, nothing beats experiencing it on a private boat tour. It’s undoubtedly one of the best ways to take in all the beauty and charm of this stunning lake.

You can rent a boat yourself (most boats don’t require a license) or hire a driver to take you around.

Like most private tours, these tend to be significantly more expensive than classic guided trips, but if you’re traveling with a group, it can be quite affordable.

Aside from the obvious beauty, one of my favorite things about taking a private boat tour is that you have complete control over your itinerary. You can stop wherever and whenever you want for photos or to take a dip in the crystal-clear waters.

There are lots of options, such as this private 2-hour tour  with your own captain, or you can don the captain’s hat yourself and  rent a boat for 2 hours  which gives you the ultimate freedom to explore on your own.

If you’re staying in Bellagio, Varenna, Menaggio, or Tremezzo, this luxurious Lake Como boat tour will be the best option for you.

Alternatively, you can also find a bunch of skippers offering private excursions from each of the main towns, so it’s possible to do this activity at the last minute if it’s not too busy.

10. Explore the ruins of the Castello di Vezio

In terms of more outdoorsy things to do at Lake Como, it’s hard to beat the hike to the Castello di Vezio. The trail will take you around 30 minutes to complete, so it’s a relatively short but steep hike.

Once you reach the top, you’ll be greeted by spooky ghost statues scattered around the grounds, 12th-century ruins, and some of Lake Como’s best views. Anyone with an interest in wildlife will also enjoy checking out the collection of birds of prey that reside here.

This castle has lived many lives, including serving as a military outpost during World War II, and you can read up on the background through the information boards at the top.

As it’s a steep hike, I recommend wearing suitable shoes and bringing plenty of water. I stupidly did this hike in sandals and it was horrible to get down on the slippery paths so I wouldn’t recommend that!

lake como travel and leisure

11. Stroll through the botanical gardens at Villa Cipressi

Another stunning garden to explore on Lake Como is at Villa Cipressi in Varenna. This gorgeous villa has a beautiful terraced garden with incredible views of the lake.

Villa Cipressi now operates as a hotel and it’s definitely one of the most stunning Lake Como hotels with lake views!

The building itself dates back to the 15th century and retains all its old-world charm through its outdoor patio, luxury guestrooms, and traditional decor. Sadly, only hotel guests are permitted inside the property.

However, the botanical gardens are open to the public and are just as sensational, packed with hundreds of plant species in the prettiest of surroundings. It’s a lovely place to spend an afternoon, especially if you’re looking for a quieter spot away from the busy towns.

Villa Cipressi, Lake Como

12. Try some watersports on the lake

Lake Como is the perfect place for a relaxing getaway, but it also has plenty to offer for travelers who like to get their adrenaline pumping.

Wakeboarding, windsurfing, canoeing, and stand-up paddleboarding are just some of the watersports offered along the lake, and the calm waters make it much less daunting for first-timers.

When the warmer weather comes around, towns and villages like Bellagio, Varenna, and Lenno operate a ton of exciting watersports, and many hotels have the likes of jet skis and kayaks available to rent.

This is a fantastic way to experience the lake from a different perspective and add some excitement to your trip.

Kayaks on Lake Como

13. Enjoy a funicular ride up to Brunate

The town of Como is linked to the nearby village of Brunate by a funicular railway that’s been in operation since the late 1800s.

Brunate lies 500 meters (1,640 ft) above Como, making it an excellent spot for panoramic views of the lake and surrounding mountains.

The journey itself only takes around 7 minutes, and during peak seasons, it runs roughly every 15 minutes. After you land in Brunate, you’ll have the Phare de Volta lighthouse and quaint churches like Parrocchia Sant’Andrea Apostolo to explore.

We opted to visit for sunset and I couldn’t recommend it enough. The sky lit up in the prettiest shades of pink, orange, and yellow, with the lake sparkling below us. It was a truly magical experience!

Sunset from Brunate, Italy

14. Explore the historic center of Como

Como is the capital of the Province of Como, and I’ve always found this city to be terribly underrated.

It’s much larger than cute villages like Bellagio and Varenna, but it has so much to offer in terms of history, culture, and nightlife.

You’ll have no problem catching a ferry to Como for the day, as it boasts fantastic connections to most of the smaller towns, but spending a few nights here is also definitely worthwhile.

The exquisite Como Cathedral is the centerpiece of the city, so a visit here is a must to see frescoes and stained glass windows that’ll blow you away.

Other things to do in Como include visiting Villa Olmo, a palatial property that looks more like a royal residence, plus the Basilica of San Fedele.

Como also has a direct train connection to Milan, so it’s an easy day trip from the fashion capital of Italy if you’re based there.

15. Attend an Italian cooking class

Without a shadow of a doubt, one of the best things to do in Lake Como is to take part in a cooking class.

As well as being a wonderful opportunity to learn the craft of Italian cooking, these classes are such a blast and usually include some local wines to enjoy alongside your home-cooked meal.

This tour equips you with all the skills you’ll need to craft your own pasta at home, and you’ll also learn how to whip up a mean tiramisu. The class is usually only made up of around 10 to 12 people and runs from your local chef’s own home.

An Italian dining experience wouldn’t be complete without an aperitif, and these classes generally offer some prosecco to sip on before your meal, plus some light bites and nibbles.

Tiramisu at La Lanterna Bellagio

16. Visit Villa Melzi Gardens

As you’ve probably gathered by now, Lake Como has an abundance of high-end villas and immaculate gardens, and Villa Melzi is one that I instantly fell in love with.

Just a quick stroll from the center of Bellagio, Villa Melzi is actually one of the newer villas in the area, having been constructed in the early 1800s.

The interior of the villa is off-limits to visitors, but the museum, chapel, and gardens are open to the public from March to November each year.

From the Romanesque and Egyptian statues to the serene Japanese pond and the meandering walkways, these gardens are just magical and really encapsulate the beauty of Lake Como.

Bellagio can be quite hectic during the summer months, and Villa Melzi will check all your boxes when you’re looking for somewhere that’s easy to reach but away from the hustle and bustle of the main streets.

View of Villa Melzi in Bellagio, Italy from the lake

17. Eat in a lakeside restaurant

You won’t have to go far to enjoy dinner with a view in the Lake Como area, as there are more waterfront eateries than I’d even attempt to count.

Classic Italian fare like wood-fired pizzas, arancini, burrata, and bruschetta are available in most restaurants, so you’ll be spoiled for choice no matter where you pick.

Having said that, it’s not uncommon for bistros and cafes with incredible locations to be lacking in quality when it comes to the food, so I have a few suggestions for you to ensure you won’t have to sacrifice on views or taste.

For an upscale experience, make sure to visit Bar Giardino at Hotel Royal Victoria in Varenna. The view from the outdoor terrace is simply incredible, and the food is equally as impressive.

Or for a more casual option, head to Bar Il Molo , just a few steps from Hotel Royal Victoria. I must admit, the food here can be a bit of a hit or miss, but the view from their terrace and the cocktails are top-notch.

Ristorante La Punta is another favorite of mine, and it’s located right on the tip of Bellagio’s peninsula, making it the perfect place for a sunset dinner. With its elegant decor and delicious seafood dishes, this restaurant is a must-visit while in Lake Como.

18. Take a dip in the lake

It goes without saying that one of the most enjoyable things to do in Lake Como is to dive into the refreshing cobalt-blue waters.

Lake Como is a lovely place for a dip, especially when you’ve spent the day under the sweltering sunshine. After all, Italy is no stranger to scorching summer temperatures!

There are many hotels perched right along the waterside with their own stretch of private land, but there are a number of designated swimming areas in most towns.

Unless somewhere is marked as safe for swimming or is a beach area, it’s best to avoid jumping in, as some patches of the lake have less favorable swimming conditions than others.

Some gorgeous spots for a quick splash include Lido di Bellagio Beach Club, Spiaggia Pubblica di Bellagio, or Lido di Varenna.

Where to Stay in Lake Como

The most popular areas for accommodation in Lake Como are Bellagio, Varenna, and Como. These towns have the most tourist attractions and offer great accommodation options ranging from luxurious villas to budget-friendly guesthouses.

Varenna and Como are especially great because they have direct train connections to Milan, so it’s very easy to get to. However, keep in mind that Como is very far from the middle part of the lake where most attractions are located so you’ll spend a lot of time commuting.

If you want to know more about the best places to stay around the lake, check out my in-depth guide about where to stay in Lake Como . It covers all of the best areas and gives you some insider tips on where to find the best deals.

lake como travel and leisure

Like something out of an Italian romance novel, Lake Como makes you swoon with its stately villas, sprawling gardens and sparkling sapphire waters.

With the Italian and Swiss Alps as a backdrop and myriad olive groves and lemon orchards providing pleasant shade, it's no wonder the massive body of water (the third largest in Italy) has starred more than once on the silver screen. You can glimpse the Y-shaped lake's famous shores in everything from silent films ( The Pleasure Garden)  to action blockbusters (2006 James Bond flick Casino Royale ) to modern comedies (Netflix's Murder Mystery ).

Aside from Hollywood, Lake Como has served as inspiration for everyone from Medieval poets to American authors — Mark Twain and Ernest Hemingway both praised the lake in some of their most famous works.

Home » 10 Best Towns In Lake Como (Which To See & Where To Stay)

In the northwest corner of Italy , lazing peacefully at the foot of the Swiss Alps lies the vast and beautiful Lake Como.

The Y-shaped lake has long been topping lists of the best places to visit in Italy, and for good reason.

The lake is not only a gorgeous natural wonder, but its banks are lined with picturesque old towns and villages that offer fairytale scenery, gorgeous lakefront promenades, and exceptional views.

We think it’s a perfect spot for a romantic getaway.

With so many towns around Lake Como, it can be a bit daunting to try and choose which you would like to see.

Or if you’re wondering where to stay in Lake Como, you’ve come to the right place.

We’ve made a list of our top ten Lake Como towns, so you can start planning your trip to this beautiful region.

Here are the 10 Best Towns In Lake Como

Below you will find the 10 best towns on Lake Como in Northern Italy. Our two favorites by far are Bellagio and Varenna.

We stayed in Bellagio and it was a perfect base for us.

1. Bellagio

lake como attractions

The town of Bellagio lies in a famously stunning location right on the peninsula that divides the three branches of Lake Como, Italy.

It is a beautiful town with a rich history stretching back thousands of years and is without a doubt the most well-known town in the area.

It is often considered the best town to stay in Lake Como, and whilst smaller in size than Mennaggio this is where we prefer staying ourselves.

bellagio lake como italy

Also referred to as the ‘ pearl of Lake Como ’, Bellagio is classy, glamorous, and frankly relatively expensive.

It’s also a hotspot for tourists (for good reason), so it tends to be relatively busy with a bustling atmosphere.

The town is veined with steep and narrow streets and alleyways that wind gracefully amongst the old buildings.

Gorgeous cobbled streets and gentle staircases slope down toward the lake, ensuring incredible views while you walk around the town.

Bellagio the prettiest town on lake Como

The quaint streets are lined with flowers, ivy-covered balconies , and buildings in an array of pastel colors. There is also a selection of great shops and restaurants in the town.

La Grotta Bellagio Como

Whilst the town itself is stunning, the amazing panoramic views it offers are even better.

What To Do In Bellagio

Amongst other activities, visitors can spend time walking the picturesque streets , strolling along the waterfront promenade , admiring the Villa Melzi gardens , or taking a kayaking tour .

There are numerous boat trips available. Take a leisurely ferry cruise around the lake or opt for a speedboat tour to get up close and personal with the stunning scenery.

For outdoor enthusiasts, there is an interesting Devil’s Bridge Tour . Discover the stories behind the witches of the “Devil’s Bridge,” nestled in the beautiful Alpine scenery. The tour lasts for 2 hours.

Spend the day lounging on the sand on a beach or exploring Bellagio’s many piazzas with a delicious cup of cappuccino. Experience Bellagio like the locals do – swimming in the lake or taking part in an Italian cooking class .

Where To Eat In Bellagio

La Grotta Bellagio Como

  • Whilst you are in town, do make sure that you sit down for a meal at  La Grotta . It was a local recommendation and we loved it so much that we went back for return meals.
  • If you have transport, you might also like to book a table at   Trattoria_Baita_Belvedere where you can get lovely views over the lake.
You can read our full travel guide on what to do and see in Bellagio here.

How to Get to Bellagio

  • Our preferred way to get to Bellagio is by car. There are several small roads that lead into Bellagio from different directions, so it can be easily reached from Milan (the drive will take around 1 hour 30 minutes) or other nearby cities. It is also easy to rent a car .
  • Alternatively, you can take a train (1 hour) or a bus to Varenna and then catch the ferry (15-20 minutes) over to Bellagio. Book your train tickets here.
  • You can also take the hydrofoil ferry from Como to Bellagio. This trip will take around 45 – 60 minutes.

How Long To Stay For

Whilst you can easily explore this town in just a few hours , we recommend you stay for longer.

A typical stay in Bellagio should be no less than two days , but if you’re looking to really explore the town and its surroundings, then 3-4 days would be much less rushed.

Where to Stay in Bellagio

Our top pick of where to stay in Lake Como is Bellagio, it is just such a sweet little town, and in my opinion, it is the best town on Lake Como (don’t miss seeing this one!).

Also, check out our list of the best Lake Como luxury hotels here. Yes, luxury, cause you do deserve it, right?

The Hotel Belvedere is a remarkable accommodation option that I would highly recommend. This hotel offers stunning views of the lake and mountains .

The hotel is a stunning historic villa with charming decor & atmosphere. Rooms are spacious, comfortable & elegantly furnished with modern amenities for luxurious stays .

The hotel boasts a fantastic restaurant , bar, and lake-view terrace, where guests can savor food and drinks while admiring the stunning scenery.

Hotel du lac and spa in bellagio

The MOST popular hotel by far. This 3-star hotel has an incredible review score of 9 out of 10 (and that’s from over 950+ travelers ).

The hotel offers a variety of rooms , including some with balconies and others with lake views . While most rooms are suitable for couples, there is a family room available for a family of four, subject to availability.

One of the highlights of Hotel Du Lac is its prime location . It is situated close to the town center and the lakefront, making it a convenient base for exploring Bellagio and the surrounding area.

Guests can easily walk to shops, restaurants, and other attractions.

Click here to check rates and availability at Hotel Du Lac ( this one gets booked out quickly ).

towns around lake como - Varenna

Originally a traditional fishing village , Varenna is a humble, quiet, little town that is far less touristy than some of the other towns on the lake.

The town is quaint and rustic and offers a more authentic window into the life of Como Lake locals. In my opinion, it is definitely the prettiest out of all the Lake Como villages.

It’s famous for its brightly colored houses and villas, as well as its peaceful atmosphere. We’ll be honest, there isn’t a whole lot to do in Varenna, but that’s part of its charm!

This town is my pick if you are after a romantic escape.

Things to do in Como Italy

What To Do In Varenna

Visitors can walk through its streets and admire the beauty, walk along the lakeside boardwalk, lounge by and swim in the lake , or hike up to Castello di Vezio , an 11th-century castle.

The hike up is beautiful and offers views across the expansive lake to Bellagio.

You can also pay a small fee to enter the beautiful Villa Monastero , whilst you can enter the villa, and the grounds are lovely to explore.

Villas to visit at Varenna Como

Varenna is full of unique places to explore, and a walking and food tour is the perfect way to experience them.

Explore Lake Como’s banks with a small-group walking tour from Varenna . Enjoy a nature walk, spot local wildlife, and learn about bird species. Walk the ‘Greenway of the Patriarchs,’ visit the ‘fiumelatte’ and Villa Monastero’s gardens.

Bar Il Molo Varenna

  • Recommended restaurants to have a meal at includes Al Prato Restaurant (not very kid-friendly, but yummy meals), Il Cavatappi , and  Albergo Milano (for dinner with glorious views).
  • For a casual no-fuss meal with kids , our meals at  Bar Il Molo were not too bad (nothing impressive but good).
  • For an extra special experience, you can also enjoy a 4-course meal at a local’s house (it also includes a cooking demonstration). Book the local dining experience here .

How to Get to Varenna

  • The easiest and most popular way to get there is by train . You can take a train to Varenna-Esino station, which is just over an hour away. Book your train tickets here.
  • You can also rent a car for the drive from the airport to Varenna, though this can be a bit complicated due to the winding mountain roads. It could take around 1 hour and 30 min by car.
  • Alternatively, you can head to Como and catch the ferry from Como to Varenna (around 60 min).

Although it’s possible to tour this town within a couple of hours , we suggest extending your stay.

A typical sojourn in Varenna ought to be at least two days , but if you want to thoroughly discover the town and its environs, it’s advisable to stay for 3-4 days to avoid feeling rushed.

Where to Stay in Varenna

Varenna is the prettiest town in my opinion, so it is the perfect place for those looking for a romantic escape .

It is small in size and has LOTS of stairs to get around, so might not be the best option for families with little kids though.

Here is your easy reference guide to the most popular hotels in Varenna.

1. Hotel Royal Victoria (4-Star)

Hotel Royal Victoria in Varenna

Our recommendation – if you can afford it. Hotel Royal Victoria is a beautiful 4-star luxury hotel .

The hotel also has a prime location close to the town center and the ferry port, making it easy to explore the area.

It has a  swimming pool  and a wellness center with a sauna and a steam bath.

Some  rooms have a balcony with a  view  across the  lake . Suitable for couples.

Overall, Hotel Royal Victoria is a highly-rated hotel and could be a great choice for your stay in Varenna.

Click here to check rates and availability at Hotel Royal Victoria

2. Hotel Olivedo (3-Star)

Hotel Olivedo in varenna

Hotel Olivedo is a cheaper alternative for those who are looking for something pretty but don’t mind staying in 3-star hotels .

Some rooms have a balcony with views of the lake.

The hotel features a restaurant, a bar, and a terrace overlooking the lake.

It is also conveniently located near the ferry dock, which provides easy access to other towns on Lake Como.

Again only suitable for couples.

Click to see if there is a room available at Hotel Olivedo here .

3. Menaggio

best place to stay in Lake Como - Menaggio

Located directly across the lake from Varenna, Mennagio is one of the largest towns on the lake and is often considered by visitors to be the most beautiful.

Best towns on Lake Como, Italy: Menaggio

Due to its size and abundance of accommodation options, Menaggio is often used by those visiting Lake Como as a base from which to explore the surrounding towns and areas.

It is one of the best towns around Lake Como for those traveling with young kids.

Once a walled city in medieval times , Menaggio is gorgeous and soaked with history.

What To Do In Menaggio

It’s well worth hiking up the steep steps to the beautiful older part of the town , where you’ll find the dilapidated remains of the original city wall.

There are also some good hiking trails with incredible views that start from the nearby Breglia .

Spend time wandering through the gorgeous quaint streets , and soaking up the views on the elegant lakefront promenade that is lined with palm trees and flower beds.

Top Lake Como towns - Menaggio

If you’re looking for an area with a lively vibe during your time at the lake, Menaggio is a great option.

Piazza Garibaldi , with its 19th-century architecture, is the vibrant hub of Menaggio, filled with bars, restaurants, and cafes.

The town has a great atmosphere, and you can generally find some great live entertainment!

Where to Stay in Menaggio

Menaggio is in my opinion not the prettiest town to stay in, but it is a great option for families. You can use a stroller around the town and there is also the lido, where you can spend your days swimming with your kids as well.

Many travelers love staying in Menaggio because it is easy to visit Belaggio and Varenna from here.

Popular hotel options include:

  • Hotel Bellavista: The most popular hotel in Menaggio. It is lakefront and in a central position as well. It has a swimming pool which is fabulous. The hotel is 3-star and has rooms suitable for single or double occupancy. Click here to check availability at Hotel Bellavista .
  • Hotel Garni Corona: Another 3-star hotel in town. This one is situated with easy access to public transport, restaurants, and shops. It might not have lake views, but it is an excellent value. They have rooms for couples as well as an option for families of 4 as well. Click here to check their prices .
  • Hotel Adler: A cheapie with fairly basic rooms. This hotel is popular as it is affordable and has a swimming pool overlooking Lake Como and the mountains. The hotel has rooms suitable for couples, as well as a room for families of up to 5 people. Click here to check out the photos of Hotel Adler .

 Lenno Lake Como Italy

Lenno is small and quiet and is one of the lesser-visited, less touristy villages on Lake Como, inhabited predominantly by locals.

It is, however, well known for two things: primarily the Villa del Balbianello, but also its exceptional homemade olive oil.

It might be the most famous town around the lake as it was used as a shooting location for popular films.

The Villa del Balbianello, located at the tip of a small wooded peninsula, is a gorgeous 18th-century villa with stunning terraced gardens.

Its exceptional beauty has earned the villa a part in numerous feature films, such as Casino Royale and Star Wars: Episode II Attack of the Clones .

Villa del Balbianello Lenno Lake Como

The Villa del Balbianello isn’t the only thing Lenno has to offer – the town itself is beautiful and certainly worth a visit during your visit to Lake Como.

It’s accessible by boat from the larger villages on the lake, so perhaps enjoy a scenic trip across the water and spend a day in this quaint and authentic town.

Be sure to pick up some olive oil to take home with you or indulge in during your visit to Lake Como.

5. Tremezzo

Tremezzo lake Como

Tremezzo is another beautiful small town on Lake Como that is mostly known as a picturesque tourist resort, with elegant villas lining its streets.

The vast majority of this quaint and romantic town lies directly on the banks of Lake Como, so navigating it is simple and the sights are all grouped quite close together.

By far the largest attraction to Tremezzo is the incredible Villa Carlotta, a 17th-century neo-classical style villa surrounded by the most gorgeous gardens in the Lake Como area.

Villa Carlotta and gardens in Tremezzo, Lake Como, Lombardy, Nor

The gardens are incredibly diverse, containing over 500 plant species, including bamboo, cacti, palm trees, Japanese maples, and orchids, amongst many others. There is also a great art museum at the villa.

Villa Carlotta and gardens in Tremezzo, Lake Como, Lombardy, Nor

The Monte Crocione hike (eight-hour round-trip) which starts nearby offers amazing views of the lake and the Alps.

Click here to book a luxurious stay at the stunning Grand Hotel Tremezzo.

Lecco Lake Como Italy

Lecco is a beautiful town in Lake Como. With its spectacular views, charming historical sites, and endless outdoor activities it’s no surprise it’s one of the best towns on the lake. The scenery around Lecco is particularly stunning – lush green hillsides stretching as far as the eye can see, with dramatic snow-capped mountains hovering above them.

This provides plenty of opportunities for hiking and trekking, as well as taking a leisurely stroll or bike ride along some of Lake Como’s most picturesque shoreline paths.

What to do in Lecco

Lecco town in Lake Como

There are plenty of outdoor activities to enjoy such as hiking, biking, or swimming in the lake.

The town itself is home to a variety of cultural attractions, including the Lecco Castle, Piazza Garibaldi, and the historical Church of Sant’Antonio Abate.

It’s also known for its vibrant nightlife and restaurants.

How to get to Lecco

Lecco is easily accessible via public transport, with regular bus and boat services connecting it to the nearby towns of Como, Tremezzo, and Menaggio.

  • From Milan, a train journey will take around an hour . Click here to purchase your train tickets .

  • From Como, a ferry (depending on which one you take) will take around 25-60 minutes.

How long to stay for

If you are looking to explore the town and its attractions, a few days are usually sufficient.

For those looking to get out into nature and enjoy some of the outdoor activities, a longer stay is recommended.

Hiking along the lake or through the mountains can take several days, so plan your trip accordingly.

Where to stay in Lecco

Accommodation in Lecco is quite affordable with a few hotels available.

1. NH Lecco Pontevecchio (4-Star)

NH Lecco Pontevecchio

NH Lecco Pontevecchio is a modern and stylish 4-star hotel located in a strategic position in the heart of Lecco, overlooking the Adda River and the picturesque Ponte Vecchio.

The hotel also features an elegant restaurant serving local and regional cuisine, a cozy bar, a fitness room, and electric bike rental facilities .

The hotel’s location is ideal for exploring the charming town of Lecco, with its historic center, shopping streets, and cultural attractions within walking distance.

Click here to check rates and availability at NH Lecco Pontevecchio

Nesso in Lake Como

Nestled in the mountains, Nesso is an idyllic village located just 20 minutes away from Bellagio.

The town is surrounded by gorgeous countryside and is known for its beautiful lakeside walk and numerous hiking trails.

Those looking to explore the history of Nesso can visit the Church of Santa Maria della Neve and the ruins of Castel Baradello.

For me, Nesso is a great town to visit for an hour or two, but it is not a town that I want to stay in for a few nights.

How to get to Nesso

The easiest way to reach Nesso from Milan is to catch the train to Como, which takes about 1-hour.

From Como, you can catch a C30-bus which will take an additional 45 minutes. Or alternatively, you can catch the ferry – only the slow ferries stop at Nesso.

Bellano in Lake Como

Bellano is a stunningly beautiful town on Lake Como, located in the center of the lake.

The town itself is full of quaint alleys and cobblestone streets that make walking around and exploring its unique charms a delight.

Bellano has been gaining in popularity recently as one of the premier towns on Lake Como, with its picturesque harbor waterfronts , stunning views, and delicious cuisine making it a must-visit destination.

The town itself is home to a variety of cultural attractions, including several churches and small museums .

For outdoor activities, visitors can go swimming in the lake or explore some of its many hiking trails .

9. Cernobbio

Lake Como Town of Cernobbio

The picturesque town of Cernobbio is located just 6km from Como and is renowned for its elegance and sophistication.

It is home to one of the most luxurious hotels in Lake Como – Villa d’Este .

What To Do In Cernobbio

Cernobbio offers a variety of activities for visitors. Take a leisurely stroll along the lakeside promenade or explore one of the beautiful gardens .

For some adventure, rent a kayak and paddle out into the lake or hire a bike to explore the surrounding countryside. The area is also home to several golf courses if you’re looking for something a bit different.

If you’re in need of some relaxation, take some time out at one of the town’s spas. Or, if you’re looking to indulge, head to one of the many chic restaurants or cafes and sample some traditional Italian cuisine.

How To Get To Cernobbio

From Como, it takes around 15 minutes to reach Cernobbio by road. You could easily drive yourself, catch a taxi or save some money by taking the bus.

Cernobbio is well worth a visit, but since it’s quite small. We recommend it as a visit for the morning or afternoon, however, if you wish to base yourself here we recommend staying for no more than two days.

Como city Lake Como

The city of Como, offers visitors a wealth of attractions and activities to enjoy.

For those looking to explore the culture and history of the area, there are several great museums and galleries to visit such as the Museo Didattico della Seta and the Casa Museo Volandia.

The city also has some excellent shopping opportunities, restaurants, cafes, bars, and nightclubs to explore.

What To Do In Como

Duomo square in como city

One of the best attractions in Como is the stunning Duomo di Como , which was built between 1396 and 1770 and is one of the most beautiful examples of Italian baroque architecture.

Best Lake Como Towns FAQs

Here are some answers to some of the most commonly asked questions about which towns to see in Lake Como and where to base yourself.

For us, the best part of Lake Como to visit is mostly the area around the tip of the Peninsula which includes the towns of Bellagio, Varenna, and Menaggio.

Our favorite town to base ourselves is Bellagio, it is also a great town base to visit other towns around the lake. However, if you are after a romantic stay, I would suggest Varenna, and for families, I would suggest Menaggio.

Bellagio and Varenna are two of the most picturesque destinations in Italy. Bellagio is renowned for its cobblestone streets, quaint cafes, luxurious boutiques, and a variety of outdoor activities such as hiking, biking, and boating. Varenna is known for its stunning Villa Monastero, surrounded by lush gardens and home to some of the best seafood restaurants in Italy. So it depends on what you are after. If I had time to see only one of the two towns, I would personally choose Bellagio.

Como is much larger than Bellagio and offers visitors a more dynamic atmosphere. It has countless restaurants, shops, and cultural sites to explore, as well as plenty of activities like watersports, hiking, mountain biking, and boat tours. Bellagio is much smaller and I would describe it as a romantic town Whilst it still has plenty of restaurants, shops, and cafes to explore – it doesn’t compare to what is available in Como. However, the town is adorable and the views over the lake are gorgeous it is easier to hop on a ferry to explore Varenna and Menaggio. Personally, I prefer staying in Bellagio.

Como is much larger than Varenna. The city is also famous for its shopping, dining, and nightlife. Como offers plenty to do throughout the year with festivals and events occurring regularly. If you get bored easily and you love a variety of things to do then Como might be the right choice for you. Varenna is much smaller and is located on the eastern shore of Lake Como. It is known for its picturesque views and lakeside walks, as well as its variety of activities. The town is especially popular with tourists thanks to its boat rides, restaurants, and bars. If you prefer a prettier and more romantic town for some slow days, then Varenna could be the right choice for you.

From the bustling town of Como with its exquisite cathedral to the serene gardens of Villa Carlotta in Tremezzo. The picturesque streets of Bellagio, often dubbed the “Pearl of the Lake,” our itinerary will help you make the most of your visit.

Best Time to Visit Lake Como

The best time to visit Lake Como is from late spring to early autumn , specifically late May to September. During this period, the weather is warm and pleasant, with temperatures ranging from the mid-70s to mid-80s Fahrenheit. Lake Como has mainly outdoor activities so you’ll want to make sure to visit when the weather is at its best to experience it fully.

The summer months of July and August are particularly popular. Mainly because the long, sunny days are perfect for boating, swimming, and exploring the lakeside towns. However, for those seeking a quieter experience, the shoulder months of May, June, and September provide equally delightful weather with fewer crowds. We visited at the end of May and did have bouts of rainy weather. According to the locals, the seasons seem to be shifting and the great weather goes into October so that would be another great month to visit!

How to get to Lake Como?

When flying to Italy, the closest airport to Lake Como is Milan Malpensa (MXP). From there, you can take a private transfer for convenience and comfort (recommended if you have large luggage) or take an hour-long train ride to Como San Giovanni train station, the primary gateway for exploring Lake Como.

Upon arrival, you have two main options for reaching your final destination. You can hire a private transfer from the train station, or you can take the C10 bus, which travels along the west side of the lake. The towns are well connected by the bus service. While the bus is a budget-friendly option (€2.50 for a one-way fare), it’s important to note that it is not well-suited for large luggage, and you may need to stand if the bus is crowded.

How many days do you need in Lake Como?

For a trip to Lake Como, you’ll want to spend a minimum of 3 days however a 5-day trip is ideal. This ensures that you’ll have time to relax and enjoy the sights at a slower pace which is how Lake Como should be experienced. Finally, to see everything in this Lake Como Travel Guide 5 days would be best for a visit!

Where to Stay in Lake Como

The ideal location to stay in Lake Como for exploring all the popular destinations is mid-lake. While the town of Como is wonderful to visit, it is less convenient for accommodation, as it is an hour’s ferry ride from many main attractions. For first-time visitors to Lake Como, the best areas to stay are Tremezzo, Menaggio, Bellagio, or Griante, as these towns provide easier access to the lake’s highlights. Read on for my hotel recomendations below.

Finally, regardless of which town you choose as your home base, you’ll likely be taking ferries to and from the other towns. These ferry rides are shorter in duration and typically cost around €10-€15 each way. You can purchase tickets at the ferry terminals, but many smaller coffee shops and restaurants also sell them, so be sure to ask!

Best Things to Do in Lake Como

Visiting the villas in lake como.

One of the main things to do in Lake Como is walk the grounds to the stunning Villas around the lake. It’s the perfect way to experience the heart of Italian elegance and history. These magnificent estates, with their lush gardens and stunning architecture, offer a glimpse into the opulent lifestyles of Italy’s aristocracy. They are scattered about across the lake towns.

Villa Carlotta

Begin with the iconic Villa Carlotta in Tremezzo. This 17th-century villa is renowned for its stunning gardens, exquisite views of the lake and mountains, and extensive art pieces by Italian artists such as Canova, Hayez, and Thorvaldsen. You can easily spend an hour or two exploring the lakeside property with grandeur balconies, an exquisite gate, acres of gardens, and beautiful interiors. It’s a treasured cultural and historical landmark on the lake.

The villa’s name, however, originates from the mid-19th century when Princess Marianne of the Netherlands bought it as a wedding gift for her daughter Carlotta, who married Georg II of Saxony-Meiningen. Made it all the more fitting that we witnessed a wedding ceremony here! Finally, there is a small green drink stand to the left of the entrance make sure to stop here for an Aperol spritz slushy or boozy hot chocolate.

Villa del Balbianello

Next, visit Villa Balbianello in Lenno, perched on a hill with breathtaking views of the lake. This villa is most famous for its romantic setting and appearances in films like Star Wars and Casino Royale. The villa’s origins trace back to the 13th century when it was originally built as a monastery. There are even two towers that remain on the property today that have been around since then.

Its picturesque setting and storied past continue to enchant visitors, making it a must-visit destination for those exploring the beauty of northern Italy. Because of its popularity, it is easily the busiest villa in Como and is best to visit on a boat tour (more on that later). If you are reaching Villa Balbianello by bus or car do note that you will need to walk uphill for 25 minutes from the park to reach the entrance gate. Finally, they do offer a water taxi service from Lenno for a small fee however it does not operate on the weekends.

Cipressi and Monastero

Lastly, don’t miss Villa Cipressi and Monastero in Varenna, where serene gardens and classical statues create a tranquil retreat. Each villa has its unique charm and story and provides an unforgettable experience, showcasing the timeless beauty and cultural richness of Lake Como. These villas are located directly next to each other and you can purchase admission for both at either for a small discount.

Villa Cipressi traces its origins back to the 14th century when it was originally a monastery built by the Cistercian monks. Today, Villa Cipressi welcomes visitors to explore its gardens, which offer panoramic views of Lake Como and the surrounding mountains. The main attraction here is its gates that open up into the lake. While walking down to said gates stroll casually down and take in the stunning gardens. Once reaching the gates you may encounter a line as it’s become quite popular in recent years for photos. However, while waiting you can enjoy the views and boats as they pass by.

Villa Monastero is traced back to the 12th century when it was established for Benedictine nuns. The convent complex was gradually transformed into a noble residence, blending religious architecture with Renaissance and later Baroque elements. Today, Villa Monastero welcomes visitors to explore its gardens, which showcase a diverse collection of botanical species from around the world. It’s also available to access from the water if you choose a private boat tour. However, exploring Varenna at a leisurely pace is necessary as it’s a hidden gem within the lake.

Exploring Lakeside Towns

Bellagio is a charming town nestled at the meeting point of the Y-shaped Lake Como in northern Italy. Known for its breathtaking views, historic villas, and serene atmosphere, Bellagio has earned the reputation of being the “Pearl of Lake Como.” It’s easy to see why as this town is filled with charming cobblestone streets, views for days, and artisan shops. It’s inspired writers and artists for years and years with its picturesque qualities.

Furthermore, it’s known for its historic villas and gardens. Including Villa Melzi d’Eril and Villa Serbelloni. You can easily spend an entire afternoon exploring Bellagio. Or consider making this pearl your home base for your trip. Some of the best things to do in Bellagio are relaxing at one of the beaches, shopping at the artisan stands and shops, grabbing lunch at a seaside cafe, or indulging in gelato. The famous street viewpoint everyone photographs (including us obviously) is located in front of Trattoria San Giocamo. Finally, below I’ve listed a few places we visited to add to your itinerary:

  • Rolando Shoe Makers : 4th-generation Italian shoemakers with the prettiest sandals to take home as a souvenir. Sandals range from €80 to €200.
  • Smooth Operators: delicious gelato the pistachio is their claim to fame.
  • Cafe Sanremo: gorgeous seaside cafe to relax and grab a coffee, wine, or meal.

Oh, Varenna. This romantic local gem has become increasingly popular over the years. With its colorful hillside homes, a medieval church with a Romanesque bell tower, and a town square that feels as though it’s been plucked out of Beauty & the Beast it’s easy to see why. The must-see locations when visiting are Villa Cipressi and Monastero, Bar II Molo for a lakeside meal with the prettiest views, and Hotel Royal Victoria for cocktails.

If you’d like to spend more time in this charming town then consider exploring Varenna’s historic center, Piazza San Giorgio, and Vezio Castle. Which offers panoramic views of the lake and the surrounding villages. Furthermore, you can indulge in traditional Italian cuisine at Varenna’s charming trattorias and restaurants, specializing in fresh seafood, pasta dishes, and locally sourced ingredients. Finally, savor a glass of wine from the nearby vineyards of Valtellina, known for producing excellent red wines such as Nebbiolo and Chiavennasca.

Exploring Como, the principal town at the southern tip of Lake Como, is a journey into both history and modernity. The town’s centerpiece is its stunning Cathedral (Duomo) of Como, an impressive example of Gothic architecture adorned with intricate sculptures and paintings. Nearby, the Piazza Cavour offers a charming spot to relax and people-watch amidst elegant cafes and boutiques. Visitors can delve into Como’s rich history at the Museo Archeologico Paolo Giovio, showcasing artifacts from ancient Roman times through the Middle Ages, or take a stroll along the lakeside promenade, enjoying panoramic views of the lake and surrounding mountains.

Lake Como Travel Guide: Menaggio

Exploring Menaggio offers a blend of relaxation, culture, and outdoor adventures on the western shore of Lake Como. This charming town boasts a scenic promenade lined with cafes and shops, perfect for strolls along the waterfront. Visitors can admire the elegant architecture of Menaggio’s historic buildings. Such as the 19th-century Grand Hotel Victoria and the picturesque Church of Santo Stefano.

Adventurers can embark on hiking trails that lead into the nearby hills and mountains. But if you prefer relaxation Menaggio offers lots of beach opportunities (more on that below). Finally, the town’s proximity to the lake also makes it a hub for water sports enthusiasts, with opportunities for boating, kayaking, and paddleboarding.

Private Boat Tour

Undoubtedly, the highlight of your trip will be a classic Venetian Wooden Boat Tour. I firmly believe that viewing a city from the water offers the best perspective. This boat tour was incredible, and 3-4 hours is more than enough time to experience the lake’s highlights. We cruised past Varenna, the Bridge of Nesso, and iconic villas featured in movies like James Bond and Succession. We even had time to explore the town of Bellagio on foot for an hour. The entire experience made me feel like a movie star and was a highlight of my life!

Being that we visited Villa Balbianello earlier in the day we chose Bellagio as our land excursion. But it’s best to visit Villa Balbianello throughout your boat tour to access the villa through the boat port. Make sure to book your tickets in advance. Although a boat tour can be quite pricey, the endless possibilities with your private tour is an experience that you’ll always remember. We promise that you will cherish that memory forever.

Established in 1910 by the Gandola family, the hotel quickly became a favorite among the European elite, offering an opulent retreat with breathtaking views of Bellagio and the Grigne mountains. The Belle Époque architecture, with its grand facades and lavish interiors, reflects the glamour of a bygone era while seamlessly integrating modern amenities for contemporary comfort. Things to Know Before Visiting Lake Como

  • Transportation: Getting around Lake Como is best by ferry or the bus system (C10, C30, D10). Each service is affordable, but the ferry schedule can be unreliable online and it’s best to check the times at the actual station.
  • Currency: Euro (€). Credit cards are widely accepted (Amex is not), but carrying some cash is advisable for small purchases.
  • Tipping: is not expected but appreciated for GREAT service. It’s common to round up your bill in Europe so a few euros here and there.
  • Language: English is commonly spoken in tourist areas but it’s proper etiquette to greet the Italians in their language for example “Buongiorno” (good morning) and “Grazie” (thank you) are appreciated.
  • Dress Code: Casual and comfortable for daytime sightseeing; smart casual for evening dining. Don’t forget swimwear for the lake.
  • Local Cuisine: Try local dishes like risotto con pesce persico (perch risotto), polenta, and various lake fish specialties.
  • Packing: Comfortable shoes are recommended for exploring. Pack layers; evenings can be cool, even in summer. My trench coat came in handy this trip. Sunscreen and hats are essential for daytime.
  • Connectivity: Wi-Fi is widely available, but consider a local SIM card for better mobile data coverage.

Well, there you have it fam! As you meander through cobblestone streets, take in the vibrant culture, and interact with the warm and welcoming locals, you’ll find that Lake Como is more than just a picturesque location. Allow yourself to be immersed in the beauty and elegance that have drawn visitors for centuries. An Efficient 3-day Lake Como Travel Itinerary for 2024

What’s the first thing you think about when you hear “Lake Como”? For me there are a few things that come to mind: money, George Clooney, money, villas, money, Aperol Spritz, and oh…did I mention money? Luckily it’s possible to see a lot of Lake Como, Italy on a budget, without spending too much money.

I came to Lake Como to celebrate my 27th birthday, and in a lot of settings, I was still the youngest person present (YES!). But that doesn’t mean that coming to Como is going to mean you’re kicking it with grannies the whole time – a lot of areas are also popular with families on vacation and couples looking for a time-out on the weekend.

If you’re planning a trip to Italy, I hope you won’t pass up Lake Como – it totally exceeded my expectations in terms of how beautiful it was and how much I enjoyed myself. Here are some quick facts to get you started on your trip!

Here’s what you’ll see in three days on Lake Como, Italy

  • Menaggio , Villa Carlotta , & Villa Balbianello
  • Como , Nesso , & Bellagio
  • Varenna & Bellano

Duration: 3 days Dates traveled: 16 June - 19 June Recommended Accommodation on Lake Como: Of the places we stayed near Lake Como, these were my favorites and places I would love to return to:

Hotel Il Perlo Panoramico was our favorite place we stayed at on Lake Como. Fabulous premises with an amazing view over Bellagio . It’s too far to walk into town, but they offer a shuttle several times a day. If you go around sunset, you’ll have no trouble finding parking a 15 minute walk outside of town. They have wine tastings, a lovely breakfast, and the best view over Bellagio in my opinion.

Hotel Bellavista Located very centrally in Menaggio , and provides a beautiful view over the lake and excellent A/C for those summer months. Skip the hotel restaurant and go into town instead. Very convenient location for driving to Villa Balbianello and Villa Carlotta first thing in the morning 😉

lake como travel and leisure

My top tips for where to stay in Lake Como: Specific hotel recommendations, tips for choosing accommodation, what to look for, and the best towns to stay in near Lake Como.

Where to eat around Lake Como My favorite meal on this trip was at Ristorante Bilacus in Bellagio! It’s not on street level, so if you can find it, it’s unlikely to be too busy. Solid prices, good portions, and perfect for people watching.

Before you go Although it’s not strictly necessary to rent a car to explore Como, it will change your experience quite a bit! Without a car, you will have to stick to the main towns or haul around your luggage on a bus. I recommend DiscoverCars for your car rental in Italy (and when driving in Italy always get insurance).

How to get there There are a ton of cheap flights into the Milan airport at Bergamo, you can get here for $30 with Ryanair or other low cost carriers. This is also a great reason to come for an extended weekend – you can fit everything you’ll need into a carry-on!

Reaching Lake Como as a day trip

I want to mention just briefly two options for boat tours around Lake Como, which you can keep in mind while you’re reading this itinerary. Many of the places I’ve listed are also accessible as part of a boat tour, particularly my favorite towns and a few off-beat spots.

Especially if you’re not renting a car, you may want to take a boat tour to see a few places mentioned in this guide:

Lake Como, Italy 3-day itinerary

Day 1: menaggio, villa carlotta, & villa balbianello.

Lake Como is shaped like an upside down Y. On our trip, we will start on the west side of the lake, and drive down the coast to reach our various destinations.

There are three main places you’re going to want to see on Lake Como, Italy: Menaggio, Bellagio, and Varenna. These three are well-connected by ferry, and provide some of the best options for food and accomodation around the lake. It’s also possible to stay in one of the many smaller towns, especially if you’re driving by car.

When you’re in Menaggio, don’t miss grabbing an ice cream on the main square and taking a walk down the promenade. There are some churches in town as well which you can check out, but nothing too spectacular. Most of your time will be spent sitting at a cafe, enjoying the sunshine, and possibly taking a boat ride out on the lake.

Most of the things to do near Menaggio are further down the coast, in the form of two villas: Villa Carlotta and Villa Balbianello.

Villa Carlotta

The thing that stands out about Village Carlotta is its expansive gardens. While the interior is pretty similar to many other villas, the gardens stretch out for ages, and there are a lot of different paths you can take depending on how much time you want to spend there.

You’ll find huge hubs of hydrangeas, panoramic lookout spots, even a gorge that looks like an overgrown jungle. Giant rhubarb also flourishes here, looking like something out of prehistoric times. Hours pass by quickly as you weave between bushes and snap photos of flowers framing the lake.

Besides the gardens, there’s also an exhibit about the process of making silk. You can learn about silk worms themselves, how silk is made, and the history behind silk. In addition, of course, is a lot of rennaissance art and classical-style statues.

Villa Balbianello

This place has an incredible story. You probably know it best from the set of Star Wars or a James Bond flick, but besides being a filming location, it was also the home of an Italian explorer. Count Guido Monzino, the last person to live in this villa, was the first Italian to lead an expedition to Mount Everest.

With a guided tour, you can go inside the house and try to discover all its secrets. You’ll find secret passageways, hidden compartments, and trapdoors in this maze of a home. Tours are offered in English, and cost about 20 EUR to access the interior and the gardens.

One of its many oddities is the dome-shaped tree, which is trimmed by gardeners by hand every winter over the course of three weeks. It was specifically designed this way to preserve the view from the lake from inside the villa.

The last person to live in the villa, Count Guido Monzino, lived a life of adventure and decadance. This was his smoking room, with walls lined with wood that would absorb the smell of smoke. It’s hard to believe that he was living somewhat that looked like this in the 70s . Clearly a man from another time!

If you’re inspired by the location, you can get on a two-year waiting list to be married here – with a minimum downpayment of 15,000 euros for the venue alone.

After a long day of viewing villas, crash for the night in Menaggio and wake up the next morning for three completely unique adventures around Lake Como!

Day 2: Como, Nesso, & Bellagio

Today is one of our busiest days, as we hit three very different locations: Como, the largest city on the lake, Nesso, a tiny village you can easily drive past which is perched atop a waterfall, and Bellagio, a glamourous and historical town known as the “jewel of Lake Como”.

A lot of guides will tell you to skip Como, as it’s kind of a bigger city and you’re at Lake Como to explore towns instead, right? To be honest, I was unfairly biased against Como. Even though it’s much more populated, there’s no shortage of gelato or beautiful Italian alleyways in this ciy.

Perhaps its most famous sight is the Cathedral of Como, which becomes visible almost as soon as you approach the city by car or boat. In fact, it’s one of the few cathedrals around the lake with a notable interior. I’m not a huge “church person” but if you enjoy a good cathedral, don’t miss popping in while you’re here.

Second to the cathedral, Como is also famous as the home of Alessandro Volta. This guy invented the modern battery, and is memorialized in a monument along the pier. It costs money to go inside so we simply skipped it, but it surely made for a nice photo backdrop 😉

Tempio Voltiano, Como, Italy

Next is Nesso, one of the cutest spots along Lake Como – if you can find it. Nesso is a bit mislabeled on Google Maps, and if you follow where the map labels and Nesso, you’re likely to go up some steep and curvy italian roads and end up at a dead end. Nesso is actually right along the road, and you can accidentally drive right through on your quest to find it.

FINDING NESSO: Look for signs while you approach for Orrido di Nesso , or, on Google Maps, Falls and Orrido for the waterfall and Ponte Della Civera for the bridge itself (accessible only by foot). You may have to park a ways outside of town, and walk, in order to have somewhere to put your car, as there is very limited parking in town. Alternatively, you can take a boat tour to Nesso directly from Lecco.

After arriving in Nesso, you’ll find signs that direct you to the base of the waterfalls down a long set of uneven, rocky stairs.

At the bottom is an area is popular for swimming with the locals, despite the fact that Lake Como is freezing in June. If you’re feeling adventurous, you can even swim to the foot of the waterfall through the ravine.

After your adventure to the bottom, you can stop at the top for a tiny beer to relax and spend a little time out of the sun. After that we’re going to Bellagio!

Bellagio is a very beautiful town, and easily the most famous on Lake Como – for this reason it’s also the most touristy, and can be packed full of people during the peak hours of the day. To avoid crowds, come to Bellagio around 6pm as the town starts to empty out. It’ll be much easier to park your car and still early enough to get a seat at a restaurant in town.

PARKING NEAR BELLAGIO: There are a number of parking lots outside of town, many of which will let you park for free. You just have to walk 15 minutes or so into the center. Ideally your hotel will have a nice map for you of where you can park.

What makes Bellagio so special is definitely its narrow alleys and stony streets. You can grab a gelato almost anywhere and enjoy exploring all the parts of town - which honestly won’t take you that long, since Bellagio is so tiny.

The town has two main areas to explore - the inner town and the area on the lakefront. When you arrive, you’re likely to come into down and have a lot of small streets to explore (and/or share with motorcyclists trying to bust through the crowds). Once you find the most famous street around the entire Lake (pictured below), you can walk down to the promenade where you’ll find even more restaurants with beautiful views.

A post shared by Monica @ notanomadblog.com (@notanomadblog) on Jun 24, 2017 at 2:24pm PDT

My one recommendation for food on this trip is found in Bellagio, called Ristorante Bilacus It’s not on street level, so if you can find it, it’s unlikely to be too busy. That said, it did fill up when we were there between 7 and 8pm so do be punctual if you want to compete for a spot for dinner!

Aperol Spritz with every meal – I’m not complaining!

Where to stay in Bellagio We loved Hotel Il Perlo Panoramico . It’s outside of town, so you can’t walk there, but you can either take one of their shuttles during peak hours or simply drive in yourself afterhours. The rooms were super stylish and the view was out of this world. They have nightly wine tastings as well - I wish we had stayed longer!

Day 3: Varenna & Bellano

If there’s somewhere I really would’ve liked to have spent more time, it would be Varenna. People seem to miss it, favoring Bellagio instead, while I found the town just as charming without being overrun by tourists. It still has all the things you expact from one of these cute lakeside villages: narrow passageways, colorful buildings, and delicious pizza. Check check check!

If you’re coming to Varenna by car from Bellagio, it’s most effective to do so by ferry. You can check the timetable of the ferries the day before when you’re in Bellagio, and plan to be in the row for the right destination at least 20 minutes in advance (I’d rather recommend 30-40 minutes depending on if you’re here during the high Summer season). You can buy a ticket for yourself and the car, and pop out to grab an ice cream while you wait for your boat to arrive.

Approaching Varenna by boat doesn’t take long, but be sure to have your camera out – these are views you can’t get of the town from anywhere else on land!

There’s not so much to do in Varenna besides walk around and explore. If you fancy a bite to eat, there are tons of places to go along the lakefront. When you arrive by ferry, follow the promenade to the right to find more of the town and more activities.

After a solid afternoon in Varenna, it’s time to wrap up our trip to Lake Como by visiting Bellano! Hop in the car and get driving.

Quick tip: How to use the ferry at Lake Como

Using the ferry at Lake Como is pretty simple. You just want to be early (about 30 minutes early) for your boat ride, and you can pay the same morning to either ride across the ferry as a person or even with your car. It is not possible to make a reservation. Taking a car costs just 4 € plus the cost for each passenger, 1,80 € each. You can find more details about the ferry timetable and detailed fare information online.

Similarly to the Orrido di Nesso , here you’re going to want to look for the Orrido di Bellano . Again - don’t trust Google Maps, just pay attention to the signs that will lead you to the best place to park.

There’s a small entrance fee to access the gorge, but I think it’s well worth it. Inside you’ll find walkways that connect canyon walls together so you can explore the inside of the orrido . You don’t need more than 30-45 minutes to explore this area, but you’ll be glad you did!

That’s a wrap!

Have you been to Lake Como? Which of these places have you seen? Let me know in the comments which was your favorite, or if I’m missing anywhere amazing around the Lake!

…pin this post for later!

Lake Como things to do and travel guide – la dolce vita on the Italian lakes

This article may contain compensated links. See our full disclosure here

In another life, I think I like to think I was a 1950s Italian glamourpuss . Think Sofia Loren. All big hair, immaculate grooming and cat eye sunglasses.

I would have ridden a scooter around Lake Como stopping off to admire the views over a glass or two of prosecco before jumping in my classic wooden speedboat for dinner in Bellagio.

Glamor – an attractive of exciting quality that makes certain people or things seem appealing

So I just had to try to live out this fantasy on our family trip to Lake Como. In the end, it wasn’t that difficult. Lake Como oozes glamor and you soak it up easily. Even if you don’t have Sophia Loren’s hair.

Here is how to get your glam on when you visit Lake Como Italy .

What's in this article

Lake Como travel guide – the most glamorous experiences

Favorite towns on lake como, where to stay on lake como, where to eat on lake como, a final word on visiting lake como.

When you visit Lake Como you are mesmerized by the natural landscape. The lake’s shimmering waters cover 146 square kilometers and forms the shape of an upside down ‘Y’. Forming a dramatic backdrop to the lake, the Italian Alps rise majestically in the distance.

This region has been the playground of the aristocracy since Roman times, although George Clooney put it on the map more recently. People come to Como for its (relative) quiet seclusion, natural beauty and easy way of life.

Visit one of the many villas overlooking the lake

We loved Villa Carlotta with its small collection of restored rooms and much larger and diverse gardens. Explore the 17th century villa and enjoy the views from the balcony of boats darting across the lake from town to town.

You could spend hours in the gardens enjoying the various ‘rooms’ or sections. There are formal and organic spaces created over 70,000 square meters to explore.

Villa Carlotta   is open daily from March to October and on selected days during the winter. Adult admission is €10 and children under 6 visit for free.

Other villas worth visiting in Lake Como

Villa del Balbianello   A famous movie location, this elegant villa starred in the movies Casino Royale and Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones.

Villa D’Este If you were looking to splurge and take your glamourpussing to new heights then Villa D’Este would be the place I would choose to stay. The luxury hotel is also home to several bars and restaurants with spectacular views over the lake.

A private boat cruise on Lake Como

I absolutely covet this experience and unfortunately this time it was not to be. Take a 2 hour or half day tour of the major sites in a classic wooden topped speedboat and you are bound to feel instantly glamorous.

If you have an active imagination and a smaller budget ride the many ferries that connect Lake Como ‘s pretty towns. Just add scarf and shades and stand on the deck of the boat in awe of the beauty that surrounds you.

Taking a boat tour  was recommended to us by the host at the apartment where we stayed. We saw the boats out on the water and they looked so sleek and elegant.

Ferries depart from various towns along the lake throughout the day. The main ports are Como, Bellagio and Mennagio – visit the local ferry operator for timetables and more information.

Watch the sunset in Bellagio at the water’s edge

I defy anyone, even the most hardened and grumpy of souls, to not be entranced watching the sun edge its way down over the horizon, behind the alps.

We saw a few sunsets on the days we visited but none matched the rose hued beauty of the sun descending behind the mountains from Bellagio.

Shop the boutiques

Como is a thriving city and we browsed several stores selling beautiful homewares and fashion. You will also find local produce stores with a variety of specialties from the Lombardy region.

A carefully chosen accessory always helps me feel more glamorous.  Bellagioseta in Bellagio is world famous for its selection of silk scarves, ties and leather goods.

Experience a food festival

Sophia Loren famously said  “Everything you see I owe to spaghetti”.  Far be it for me to argue with the great actress.

If you are looking for an amazing meal in Lake Como attend the local food festival .  Apart from enjoying a delicious meal you will notice that the people of the city are dressed to impress.

Take in the views from up high at Brunate

Take the funicular railway from Como to the hillside town of Brutante for wonderful views of the lake and the city of Como.

The trains leave every 30 minutes and cost around €5 for an adult return. At the top of the hill enjoy the views over a coffee or take a stroll around the town or on some of the local walks.

Simply cruising around the lake either by boat or car or both feels glamorous. In an area blessed with so many pretty places some of the towns we visited stood out as my favorite.

With a slightly more rustic feel than its sophisticated neighbors, Brienno rests quietly on its considerable charms. The views across to Bellagio are divine and the houses that lined steep cobbled lanes that rise up the hillside offer fleeting glimpses of the lake below.

The sun descended slowly over the shimmering lake, light reflecting off the mountains in an ethereal haze. I think I took over 100 photos after pausing to enjoy the moment. Possibly the most famous of the towns on Lake Como’s shores, Bellagio captured me at sunset.

READ: 50 beautiful small towns in Italy

A friendly waiter ushered us to our table with a view and organized the children’s pasta so we could relax and enjoy the spectacle. I will remember this dinner forever. We were laughing and smiling, the view was incredible and our meals delicious.

If your idea of heaven is a medieval town full of colorful buildings perched upon a lake then you will no doubt fall in love with Varenna as I did.

Away from the hustle and bustle of Como and Bellagio, Varenna reminded me of the secluded beauty of Lake Orta .

A lakeside promenade winds around the shore leading to a pretty square off which climb stone alleyways hiding boutiques and gelateria. When I return to Lake Como I would like to stay in Varenna.

How to get from Milan to Lake Como

Many tour companies offer a day trip to Como from Milan and this is a good option if you are short on time.

However, if you’re independently minded, Como is a short train ride or drive from Milan. To get there by train catch the express service from Milano Centrale to Como San Giovanni (about 20 minutes walk from the lake) or Varenna and you can be enjoying the fresh lake air in around an hour.

You can also take the local train to Como Nord Lago (right by the lake) from Milano Cadorna (near Castello Sforzesco). This journey also takes about an hour.

The best way, I think, is to take the train to Varenna and catch ferries back down the lake to Como. They are not super fast, but who cares! It’s the Italian lakes.

If you have a little more time, rent a car and make the most of the smaller towns on the lake. You can catch car ferries or cruise around the scenic winding roads.

Not keen on driving in Italy? Check out our guide on tips to driving in Italy to build your confidence. It’s really not as hair raising as you would think.

We chose to stay in Como town as we wanted to do a day trip to nearby Switzerland and tour the lake from a central base. Como is a thriving and living city, not simply a tourist town.

It has several significant buildings including the magnificent duomo or cathedral decorated in the gothic style. I loved pretty Piazza Cavour where restaurants spill into the square and children play while their parents sip wine.

Our apartment in Como

I like to think I am becoming quite the expert on picking great vacation rental properties and our apartment in Como was among the best we have stayed in.

Built on ancient foundations, the huge newly renovated two bedroom apartment was in the center of town within walking distance of the lake, the Duomo and a wonderful gelato shop.

Beautifully decorated with local touches I also loved the history of the building. Original Roman remains are integrated into its structure. You can see these from the pretty secret garden the apartment is named for.

Our welcoming host Alessandra was so kind and patient, taking the time to tell us about the local attractions and helping us find a secure car spot. It seems we were not the only guests to find the property appealing.

You can book the apartment and read more reviews on Booking.com and Tripadvisor .

Recommended hotels on Lake Como

Lately, I have spent a lot of time day dreaming and researching our return to this beautiful part of Italy. Here are some of the places I think are the best hotels in the best towns to stay in Lake Como.

The ultimate in glamorous Lake Como accommodations, no request is too much trouble at Grand Hotel Villa Serbelloni. The 5 star hotel boasts incredible views over the lake (think of those sunsets!) and a Michelin star restaurant on site. > Check availability and prices

Perfect for a modern romance, the Filario has an infinity pool looking over Lake Como and a private beach. Guests can arrange private water taxis from the hotel but the comfortable and stylish rooms mean you might not want to leave. > Check availability and prices

The classic views from the terrace at 4 star Hotel Royal Victoria in Varenna are the stuff of dreams. Varenna is a quieter option if you want to stay away from the crowds and the hotel is the perfect spot to enjoy this peaceful side of the lake. > Check availability and prices

You’ll find accommodation options on Booking.com and Plum Guide . Plum Guide handpicks the fantastic properties on their website, only accepting a small percentage of applications, and all rooms are of superb quality.

TIP: If you find a property you like on Plum Guide , be sure to add the code “Untold5” for a 5% discount.

Rodrigo Restaurant  – Via Regina, 7, 22011 Griante

A short stroll from Villa Carlotta, the wonderful Rodrigo Restaurant has been serving patrons classic Italian dishes and local specialties since the 1920s. In its heyday, the restaurant was renowned for its opulent style but these days I can heartily recommend the pizza.

Ristorante l’Antica Riva – Via Lungo Lario Trieste 50, Como

We feasted on the freshest fish at this elegant restaurant overlooking the city of Como’s shoreline. Our children were spoiled by the attentive waiters who made sure, in wonderful Italian fashion, that they were fed first so we could enjoy our meal.

La Terrazza Metropole – Hotel Metropole Bellagio

Perched above the gentle, lapping waters of Lake Como we had one of our most memorable meals of the year at the Terrace restaurant of Hotel Metropole Bellagio.

Fantastic food and service were only eclipsed, quite unfairly, by the sunset spectacle across the lake. We recommend the Caprese salad and truffle linguine.

Gelateria Lariana – Via Lungo Lario Trento, 5, Como

I sat outside this gelateria with my son one evening and we bonded over a mutual love for gelato . He announced that his favorite flavor is mint and I thought that was quite sophisticated for an almost three year old.

Gelateria Lariana meets all my criteria for great gelato and I can recommend trying the bacio, lemon and of course mint flavors.

LISTEN: to our podcast episode on Lake Como

Lake Como is a wonderfully glamorous place, even if you are traveling with a couple of almost three year olds, and should definitely be included in your travel plans for Italy .

Most days I don’t feel like I ooze glamor but I certainly felt it on our visit to this most classic of Italian lakes during the last days of summer. And wouldn’t you know, Sophia Loren has a property on its shores.

Luxury Lake Como 2 Day Itinerary and Summer Travel Guide

' src=

This Lake Como 2-day itinerary explains the top things to do on the lake, the best towns to visit, where to stay, and other travel tips.

Lake Como has been at the top of my bucket list for a long time. I was enamored by the picturesque lakes and chic lakeside towns.

Plus, I’ve loved everywhere in Italy I’ve visited so far. A year ago, I was planning my European summer vacation to Munich Germany and was looking for another city in the area to add onto the trip.

Turns out, Milan is super easy to get to from Munich, making Lake Como a clear choice.

Two days in Lake Como is the perfect amount of time to visit a few towns, take a boat ride, and get a feel for the lake. It’s also short enough that you won’t break the bank with the expensive accommodation.

Keep reading to learn what to do in Lake Como and begin planning your own visit.

Some links on this blog are affiliate links, meaning I may earn a commission at no extra cost to you if you make a purchase through them. All opinions are my own, and I only recommend products and services I personally use and believe in. Thanks for your support!

Lake Como 2 Day Itinerary

Below, I’ll deep dive where to stay, what to do, where to eat, and what to wear. But first, let’s put it all together into a two-day itinerary for Lake Como.

Of course, this itinerary can be tailored to your interests or timeline.

Day 1 : Spend the morning visiting Bellagio, exploring the town, and shopping. In the afternoon, return to Varenna to visit the Villa Cipressi. Get aperitivo at Bar Il Molo then dinner at Visteria.

Day 2: Start the day on a high with a wooden boat tour of the lake. Since the tour ends in Tremezzo, spend the rest of the day exploring the town and get an Aperol Spritz at the Grand Hotel Tremezzo. At night, return to Varenna for dinner at Il Cavatappi.

The Top Things to Do on Lake Como

Wooden boat tour.

lake como travel and leisure

The most popular thing to do in Lake Como is a wooden boat tour. These sleek boats are famous in Lake Como and are a great way to tour the lake from the water.

If it’s your first-time visiting Lake Como, you need to fit a tour into your 2 day Lake Como itinerary.

Unfortunately, the boat tours are very expensive, especially if you are travelling as a couple. I opted for the lowest cost option I could find which was through AC boat rentals and around $200 per hour.

The tour started in the town of Menaggio. From there, we explored the lake, driving past famous villas and landmarks.

Although it was of decent value, I found the service to be lacking and wish I had spent a bit more on a better experience.

The tour I would have preferred to do is this one which was highly recommended by one of my favorite travel bloggers.

From her description, the service is much better on this tour and the driver is more engaged. This option leaves from Tremezzo.

Boat Rental

An alternative to a guided wooden boat tour is renting your own boat for the day. This is a much less expensive and more flexible option. However, you miss out on the guide’s information and the iconic experience of the wooden boat.

If you are visiting for the first time, I recommend taking the wooden boat tour . If it’s your second visit, I suggest getting a personal boat rental. That’s what I plan to do when I return.

Villa Tours

lake como travel and leisure

Another one of the top things to do in Lake Como is tour the historic villas on the lake. I recommend visiting 1-2 during your two-day itinerary.

Villa Cipressi

The Villa Cipressi botanical gardens were my favorite out of all the villas I visited. Located in Varenna, this Villa is within easy walking distance of the ferry terminal.

Tickets can be purchased onsite and are around 12 euros per person for access to the gardens. You can walk through part of the building, but it is now a hotel with the rooms converted into guest rooms.

The highlight of the Villa Cipressi is the lakeside gardens with a wide variety of flowers and plants, and winding pebble paths.

In addition, there are a lot of great photo spots and viewpoints of the lake. I recommend budgeting around an hour to tour the gardens.

Villa Balbianello

This is the most popular villa on the lake, mostly due to being recognizable from movies like Star Wars and James Bond Casino Royale.

Villa Balbianello is much harder to get to than Villa Cipressi. First, you will need to take a ferry to the town of Lenno. From there, walk about five minutes to the water taxi or 20 minutes to the villa. I recommend taking the water taxi, which costs 6 euros per person and leaves every 10 minutes.

The reason I recommend the water taxi is so you can experience the view of the villa from the water. However, it can get very backed up and you may have to wait up to an hour.

Tickets to Villa Balbianello sell out well in advance, so book online ahead of time . You can either purchase a garden ticket for around 12 euros or a villa tour for around 25.

Overall, the villa and grounds are beautiful, but I prefer Villa Cipressi. Unless you are super interested in villas, I’d skip this one and save a ton of time.

Some other notable villas that I did not have time to visit are Villa Monastero, Villa Melzi and Villa Carlotta.

Visit the Towns

My favorite activity in Lake Como is simply wandering the streets of the towns. I recommend carving out half of each day to explore a town.

My three favorites are Bellagio, Varenna, and Tremezzo.  Since these are all major towns on the lake, they have frequent ferries and are easy to travel between.

When you explore the towns, I suggest wandering down the small streets, stopping in the local shops. In addition, enjoy long meals, tons of gelato, and leisure time looking at the beautiful views.

It can be easy to get caught up in cramming a ton into a 2 day Lake Como itinerary, so be sure to slow down a bit and soak it all in.

Where to Eat

Italian food is one of my favorite cuisines in the world. I could live off of pizza and pasta for every meal easily. The food in Lake Como did not disappoint.

In fact, I had a top 3 best meal of my life in Varenna. Below, I list the best places to eat in Lake Como for aperitivo, lunch, dinner, and dessert.

lake como travel and leisure

Bar Il Molo

Location: Varenna

This was my favorite bar for aperitivo. If you don’t know, aperitivo is the Italian version of happy hour which includes an aperitif like an Aperol spritz or negroni with small snacks.

Bar Il Molo has amazing waterfront views, good drinks, and complimentary nuts and chips. It was so good we visited twice!

Location : Varenna

Another great place for aperitivo in Varenna is the Bar Nilus. It is situated above the water and has amazing views. The dinner food here isn’t great, but it’s the perfect spot for a drink.

lake como travel and leisure

Location : Bellagio

This small pizza restaurant is tucked into a small alley in Bellagio. The pizza is so good, and the servings are huge! Visit this place to escape the crowds for a bit.

Locanda Cavallino

This restaurant is located conveniently next to the main ferry terminal in Varenna. They have tasty, fresh pasta, and some meat dishes. It’s a bit casual and quick for dinner, but is a great spot for a lunch.

lake como travel and leisure

This meal was definitely one of the top three best meals I’ve ever had, if not the number one. From the second we sat down, we were blown away by the view, service, and cuisine.

Visteria is located at the Grand Hotel Victoria and looks directly over Lake Como. For food, you can order a set menu or a la carte. The food is absolutely delicious, and not overly fancy.

There is also a complimentary amuse buche, pre-dessert, and dessert course in addition to the four courses you can order. Seriously, be sure to try out Visteria if you are in Varenna.

Il Cavatappi

This restaurant was highly rated as the best place to eat in Varenna. I unfortunately was unable to get a reservation, even a month in advance. If you hope to visit, book at least two months ahead of time. I’ve heard great things about the homemade pasta and authentic Italian cooking.

Hotel Florence

This restaurant in Bellagio is picture-perfect with waterfront views, a wisteria trellis, and central location in town. In addition, there is great food for a romantic dinner date.

Where to Stay in Lake Como

lake como travel and leisure

When deciding where to stay in Lake Como, there are two choices – the town and the hotel. There are small towns all around the lake, but a few are the most popular for tourism.

One of the biggest mistakes people make is staying in the town of Lake Como.

Lake Como isn’t a bad place to stay perse, but it is very far from the other popular towns and has a more commercial vibe compared to other options.

Below are my three favorite towns to stay in on Lake Como and the best hotel in each of them. These towns are all located in the mid-lake area and are easily accessible from each other.

Varenna is my #1 recommendation of where to stay on Lake Como. It’s super convenient to get to by direct train routes from Milan.

In addition, there are a ton of great restaurants, a super cute lakefront, and it’s less crowded than some other towns.

The best place to stay in Varenna is the Hotel Royal Victoria . It is a historic villa with amazing water views, one of my favorite restaurants in the world, and is closely located to the main area of town.

I stayed at the sister property, the Villa Cipressi, on my trip but would have preferred to stay at the Royal Victoria.

Bellagio is the most popular town on Lake Como and therefore the most popular place to stay. It’s nice because there are a ton of amazing restaurants, great shopping, and 180-degree lake views. However, it is extremely crowded.

If you choose to stay in Bellagio, the best hotel is the Grand Hotel Villa Serbelloni . It’s a short walk from the main town and is situated on a peninsula, provided panoramic views of the lake.

This villa is one of the top things to do in Bellagio, so staying here is such a treat.

Tremezzo is another great town to stay in on Lake Como. It reminded me a lot of Varenna, but since it is harder to get to, it was a bit quieter.

The main reason people choose to stay in Tremezzo is because it’s home to the most iconic hotel on the lake, the Grand Hotel Tremezzo .

If you’ve looked up photos of Lake Como online, you’ve likely seen this hotel with orange and white umbrellas and an overwater swimming pool. It’s definitely a splurge, but I’ve heard great things about it.

Tips for Lake Como Ferries

lake como travel and leisure

The best way to get around Lake Como is by ferry. They operate around hourly between the major towns on the lake.

Once you get the hang of it, the ferries are easy to navigate, but they can be confusing at first. Below are my top three tips for navigating the Lake Como ferry system.

1. Use the in-person schedule – There are ferry schedules posted online and on handouts, but I recommend physically walking to the ferry station to confirm the time of your boat.

The times frequently change, so check with the operators to be sure. I found it helpful to check the time of my next planned ferry when I departed my past ferry.

2. Don’t count on the ferry being on time – People assured me that the ferries were always on time. However, I experienced one ferry being an hour late, making me nearly miss my wooden boat tour.

Give yourself plenty of extra time so you don’t end up missing any reservations.

3. Book the mid lake pass – If you follow my advice and stay in the middle lake region, you can save time and money by purchasing the middle lake day pass.

This allows you to visit all the towns in the area for the day and is much more convenient than purchasing a series of one-way tickets.

Lake Como Outfit Ideas

lake como travel and leisure

One of my first thoughts when I arrived in Varenna from the train was, “wow, everyone is so well dressed”.

Italy has a reputation for high fashion, and people pulled out their best for Como. Above is a collage for Lake Como outfit ideas.

Some of the common things I noticed were light colored clothing, a lot of linen, and fashionable sandals. Leave your heels at home because the cobblestone streets are notoriously uneven.

Outfits don’t have to be crazy or uncomfortable, and you cannot go wrong with a sundress or matching linen set.

Unlike US lake towns, you won’t see many jean shorts, flip flops, or t-shirts. Everything is one step elevated, whether for exploring during the day or at night.

Check out this collage for outfit inspiration.

Best Time to Visit

I visited Lake Como in the middle of July. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoyed my time very much. However, I would not return in the middle of the summer.

The crowds were huge and a bit overwhelming. In addition, the midday sun was very hot.

The best time to visit is early June or September. During these times, the weather will still be warm, and everything will be open, but the crowds will be much more manageable.

On the other end of the spectrum, I don’t recommend visiting during the winter. From November through February, a lot of restaurants and shops shut down for the slow season.

In addition, it will be too cold to do the most popular activities on the water.

How Long to Spend in Lake Como

You can visit Lake Como in anything from one day to around five. On the short end, many people visit Lake Como as a day trip from Milan.

This is a good option if you are tight on time or budget, but will feel rushed and you will only be able to see 1-2 towns.

On the long end, you could easily spend up to five nights in Lake Como. This would allow you to spend a full day in each of the most popular towns and build in relaxation time.

I really enjoyed spending two days in Lake Como. This allowed enough time to explore four different towns, take a boat tour, have a few great meals, and see a couple of villas.

Getting to Lake Como

lake como travel and leisure

The best way to get to Lake Como is via the local train from Milan. There are direct trains to two of the most popular towns on the lake – Lake Como and Varenna. From Varenna, you can take the ferry to other popular towns such as Bellagio or Tremezzo.

The train from Milan starts at the Milan Centrale station, with a few stops along the way. Overall, it takes around 90 minutes to get from Milan to Varenna. The ferry schedule depends on which town you are visiting, but you can safely assume you can catch a ferry to any town from Varenna within an hour or less of waiting.

I highly recommend you stay in Varenna since it’s centrally located and easy to reach by train. Below, I’ll explain more about why it’s the best place to stay. However, most of the lake is accessible through a combo of train + ferry.

Quick Facts

Currency – Euro

Language – Italian, but since it is very touristy, most people speak English.

Weather – Summer weather is typically sunny and 80-90 degrees. The winter is much colder, around 40-50 degrees.

Tipping – Tipping is much less common than in the US, but 10% is appreciated for restaurants or tours.

Potential Trip Extensions

lake como travel and leisure

Following your two days in Lake Como, you are in a great position to explore more of Italy. Since you will need to travel through Milan to get to the lake, I highly recommend adding 1-2 days to explore the city.

I combined my recent trip to Lake Como with a couple days in Tuscany and Florence . From Milan, it’s a two-hour train ride to Florence.

From here, you can rent a car for a few days in the countryside, exploring the mountain towns and local wineries.

Summary of this Lake Como 2 Day Itinerary

Lake Como, a long-standing dream destination, charmed me with its stunning lakeside scenery and chic towns.

This 2-day Lake Como itinerary is your ticket to the best the region has to offer.

Whether it’s exploring charming towns like Bellagio, Varenna, and Tremezzo, taking a wooden boat tour, or indulging in villa tours, the itinerary has you covered.

The optimal time to visit is early June or September to avoid the crowds and savor the warm weather.

Don’t miss out on dining experiences either – from aperitivo at Bar Il Molo to dinner at Visteria.

Lake Como’s timeless beauty and classic Italian charm are waiting to be explored, creating memories that will have you wanting to return immediately.

Extend your adventure by discovering Milan or venturing into the enchanting landscapes of T uscany and Florence .

FAQ – 2 Day Itinerary Lake Como

Two days in Lake Como is a great amount of time to visit a few towns, tour the lake, and soak in the stunning scenery. However, if you want to see everything this destination has to offer, I’d recommend 5-7 days.

September in Lake Como is still very warm, so I recommend shorts, sundresses, and short sleeve shirts. Bring a light jacket or sweater for the cooler nights.

Italians Love This Lake Como Alternative — and It Has an Incredible Luxury Hotel

Cape of Senses is a five-star hotel on Lake Garda, a less-touristy and cheaper alternative to Lake Como just two hours north of Milan.

Hannah Freedman is a travel writer and commerce content strategist for Dotdash Meredith. She has visited more than 50 countries (and counting) and has contributed to outlets including Vanity Fair , Travel + Leisure , Thrillist , and more.

Food and Drink

Activities and amenities, family-friendly offerings, accessibility and sustainability, how to get the most value out of your stay.

Alex Moling/COURTESY OF Cape of Senses

When I first saw Cape of Senses' lake and mountain views from the floor-to-ceiling windows leading from the lobby to the terrace (my welcome sparkling wine in hand), I practically had to pinch myself. The setting was so dreamy.

While nearby Lake Como is more “known” among Americans, Lake Garda is a worthy under-the-radar gem. It’s generally a cheaper and less touristy area than Como — though no less stunning. “This is where Italians come for vacation,” Alina Deutsch, the hotel's general manager, tells me.

The adults-only fairytale escape is just two hours north of Milan , and while Cape of Senses is still an indulgent luxury stay, similarly luxe hotels on Lake Como, like the iconic Grand Hotel Tremezzo, start at well over $1,000 per night for lake-view rooms on summer weekends.

Cape of Senses opened last July and is aptly named: All five senses will be pampered and indulged throughout your stay. Every room has stunning lake views to feast your eyes on; fresh mountain air fills your nose and lungs, and gentle notes from the on-site olive trees waft through the breeze. You can listen to birds chirping and guests splashing in the pool from your private room terrace or enjoy absolute silence for deep and peaceful rest; get every kink worked out with a massage followed by relaxing in the sauna or indoor-outdoor heated spa pool; and when it comes to the taste, everything on the menu is local, fresh, and divine. Even simple dishes like a prosciutto and melon pool snack featured some of the juiciest melon I’ve ever had and melt-in-your-mouth prosciutto — not to mention the fresh, warm bread paired with olive oil from the olive trees.

Even the water is special here — and I don’t just mean that found in the lake or the heated pools. A new bottle of housemade infused water is brought to the room every morning, with a tag — “Homemade with amore" — tied around the bottle with a white ribbon. Whether it’s the love or the fruit and herbs, it’s extra delicious, and I looked forward to greedily gulping down big glasses of it every day.

Elevated touches like this are, dare I say, infused throughout the entire property. From the luxurious his-and-hers down comforters to the locally made, organic bath products to the comfy sun loungers dotted with black and white pool towels and all positioned for optimal views, every detail is carefully curated and lovingly thought through.

As testament to this, when the hotel was still under construction, Deutsch took one of the tabletops in her car while driving around the area to ensure the cutlery she picked out would go perfectly with the color of the wood. “Not everyone always notices these small details outright,” Deutsch tells me, “but I think when everything is special and thought out, a lasting impression is left on the guests.”

Having just stayed here for three days, I can confirm firsthand that this hotel indeed leaves a lasting impression that will make you want to return again and again. Read on for my full hotel review of Cape of Senses on Lake Garda in Italy.

Cape of Senses

  • All rooms have stunning panoramic lake and mountain views.
  • Wellness and relaxation are at the forefront via an infinity pool, lap pool, sauna, spa treatments, relaxation rooms, guided meditations, and more.
  • Bikes and Vespas are available to rent to zip down and take a dip in the lake or explore nearby wineries.
  • The food is fresh and locally sourced (table olive oil is made from the onsite olive trees); half- or full-board options are available for meals.

There are no bad rooms here. Since this is an all-suite property and every room has panoramic lake and mountain views, you don’t need to pay extra for a room upgrade to see a sliver of the main attraction.

Room decor features a neutral but luxe palette: hardwood floors, slate-gray chairs and bed frames, cozy, sand-colored loungers, and gold accent pillows. Terraces feature comfy couches and small black metal tables with wicker chairs, which are just right for starting your day with a warm espresso from the in-room moka pot while enjoying the view.

The king-sized bed was incredibly cozy, with two fluffy duvets and sumptuous down pillows. Even though our room and terrace were quite close to one of the on-site pools, we couldn’t hear a peep from outside when the sliding glass doors were shut.

The bathrooms are equally luxurious, with deep sinks, marbled showers with overhead and handheld showerheads, and separate areas for the toilet. The main rooms also have small, built-in wooden desks with round vanity mirrors and a swivel chair, making for an ideal extra getting-ready spot.

Even entry-level junior suites are practically palatial at 540 square feet and come with large private terraces to boot. Upgrading to a standard or spa suite will net you 100 or 200 extra square feet, respectively, but it’s the hotel's Sky and Sky Pool suites where the upgrade 'wow' factor comes into play. Located on higher floors, the Sky suites feature expansive private outdoor terraces complete with daybeds and hot tubs, while Sky Pool and Deluxe Sky Pool suites, as you may have guessed, feature stunning private infinity pools. Other upgrades in this category include larger rooms and deep soaking tubs positioned to take in the lake view.

Start your morning with breakfast on the terrazza from the buffet or a la carte menu. Or, opt for a private meal on your balcony with room service. Fresh seasonal fruit, deliciously flaky pastries, eggs and milk from local farms, and Italian sausage are all on the menu.

Later, grab a bite at Osteria La Pergola, where you can sit poolside or upstairs while enjoying a club sandwich or bowl of spaghetti with cherry tomato sauce and buffalo stracciatella. Even simple favorites here, like prosciutto with melon or a Caesar salad, are exceptional versions of the classics.

At Restaurant Al Tramonto, the exceptional sunset view from the dining terrace is the main course. Still, fine dining-worthy options like potato dumplings filled with roasted cuttlefish or duck leg in an anchovy sauce will leave your stomach plenty satiated, too.

Cape of Senses offers two pools. Relax and float in the indoor-outdoor pool that starts inside at the spa level and ends as a gorgeous outdoor infinity pool, looking directly at the best mountain and lake view, or swim a few laps in the nearby outdoor sports pool. Of course, sitting in the lounge chairs around the pools and garden lawn with a good book is also an option.

The gym has everything you need to keep your body healthy, from stationary bikes and treadmills to weight machines. Private yoga sessions and personal trainers are also available for booking.

While I certainly enjoyed my blissful massage and a dip in the pool, perhaps my favorite amenity was the cherry red e-Vespas, available to rent by the hour or for the half or full day. I lived out my Lizzie McGuire Italian fantasies, zooming down the winding roads and zipping around the lake. Though, if the Vespas aren’t quite your speed, the hotel also has an electric Fiat 500 and several bikes available instead.

The hotel concierge is also more than happy to arrange tours and activities for you, from tastings at nearby wineries to a day sailing out on the lake or a ride in a vintage car.

Wellness is at the heart of the property, so the spa does not disappoint. Seven treatment rooms offer a range of options, from classic massages and anti-aging facials to anti-cellulite body treatments and massages that incorporate Tibetan singing bowls. Manicures and pedicures are also available at the spa, plus a relaxation room complete with a spa library and a sauna and steam room.

Before or after your treatment, I recommend stopping by the tea corner and cozying up in the cushy indoor daybeds, which overlook the pool and the lake view beyond.

The hotel is open to guests 14 and up. Small dogs are allowed in dedicated dog-friendly rooms for those traveling with four-legged family members.

Preserving the surrounding area's natural beauty was ingrained in the hotel concept from the beginning. The hotel was also built with sustainable technologies in mind and uses heat pumps, solar panels, and rainwater collectors to minimize the energy footprint.

Meanwhile, interiors rely heavily on regionally sourced materials, and the hotel owners and architects prioritized 100 percent made-in-Italy products, from wooden outdoor furniture to stone tiles. The hotel also works with environmentally friendly companies for its cleaning products and works to minimize plastic consumption as much as possible across the entire hotel.

Cape of Senses also has ADA-compliant, handicap-accessible suites and bathrooms available.

Cape of Senses is roughly two hours from Milan and less than 40 minutes from the Verona airport. It overlooks the town of Torri del Benaco, and other small cities like Garda and Bardolino are within a short drive. However, the hotel's real draw is that it is secluded and not right in town. Being higher up in the hills above the lake allows for optimal views, but be aware that you won’t be right on the lake, and you’ll need to drive down some steep and winding roads to get there.

Sirmione, a historic town where you can explore 13th-century castles, makes for an excellent day trip. It is about 40 minutes away by car. We also spent a lovely afternoon set up by the hotel concierge at Zeni winery nearby Bardolino, enjoying a wine tasting in their beautiful cellar.

While you can always rent the hotel’s Vespas or Fiat for the day to head into town or down to the lake, I recommend renting a car for ease and flexibility.

Breakfast-only and half-board (breakfast and dinner) options are available when booking. If you plan on eating most of your meals on-site, opt for the half-board to reduce a la carte food charges.

The hotel also offers special packages designed around wellness or staying active, including spa treatments or activities like e-bike tours. Cape of Senses also has a sister property in the Dolomites, ALPIANA , and you can pair the two together as a five-night stay in a special Mountain & Lake package .
