TOS, in many ways, is Star Trek at its purest. It's true that it could be campy, but don't mistake that for it being unsophisticated. It was very smartly written, and while it can vary wildly in quality (like many shows from the 60s) it has a solid philosophical core, and often had some interesting things to say.

I think you should watch it all eventually, but TOS is probably the Star Trek series with the most peaks and valleys between individual episodes and it also probably has the least serialization so it really doesn't matter if you skip some of the stinkers. The back end of Season 3 is mostly pretty awful, in particular.

I do plan to re-watch star trek in its entire history during the next months (tos, tos movies, tng, tng movies, ds9, voyager and enterprise), and I do have a question regarding the best order to watch the original series. I plan on watching the episode first in the original form, then with the enhanced effects.
