Scheduling Appointments

Once you begin, regular visits may be needed based on your treatment plan. On average, patients are scheduled for a checkup once every four to eight weeks. Depending on your treatment, the length and frequency of your visit will vary. During these visits, your orthodontist assesses your progress and makes any necessary adjustments to insure a beautiful result. Also, many of our orthodontists have virtual appointments so there is no need to come to the clinic. All appointments can be scheduled in the Smile Doctors Anywhere app.

During treatment, it is necessary for you to keep up with regular teeth cleanings with your dentist. When fitted with braces or Invisalign® clear aligners , patients should have their teeth cleaned two to four times a year. For some, the first orthodontic visit can be nerve-racking. You may have a lot of questions like what paperwork will I need to complete? What documents will I need to bring and what can I expect during the examinations? Leaver & Gardner Orthodontics wants to help put your mined at ease and will walk you through all the steps. This will help you feel more prepared when having your first visit to the orthodontist !

SCHEDULE ORTHODONTIST APPOINTMENT

First you want to schedule your appointment . Leaver & Gardner Orthodontics allows you to either call or email a request for an appointment. Depending where you go, each office may or mat not have an email option. But the phone call never fails anywhere you go. So contact your preferred orthodontist and find a day and time that works the best for you.

ORTHODONTIC NEW PATIENT FORMS

When preparing for your appointment, there are some documents that you will need. For your convenience, Leaver & Gardner Orthodontics provides new patient forms on our website, as do others, so check if this option is available. It can save time to have the paperwork filled out before you get there. Don’t stress if you didn’t have time, or the ability, to print out the forms. We always have them on site. Be sure to bring your ID and insurance cards. The front desk personnel will ask for them so they can make copies and verify your provider. If possible, try and bring any x-rays and diagnostic records to help your orthodontist determine you needs.

INITIAL ORTHODONTIC EXAMINATION

After the paperwork is taken care of, we’ll then take you to an examination room and conduct some basic exams. At this time, voice your own personal concerns giving your orthodontist some direction towards your treatment. Typically the orthodontist will examine your face, lips, gums, and teeth . A bite test will also be done to see what your teeth are doing. The bite test is when you bite done on a mouth piece leaving an impression of your teeth . At this point they can determine what you will need for treatment.

ORTHODONTIC TREATMENT PROCESS; WHAT TO EXPECT

You may find you don’t need braces. Depending on your teeth there are some other methods of treatment. If your orthodontist decides that braces are needed, they may have you revisit your dentist to prepare your teeth for this procedure. If you have any other dental needs, finish them before receiving your braces. If all other dental work is done, and your teeth cleaned, many times they can put your braces on the day of your visit. Depending on your treatment, the orthodontist may need to reschedule your visit to prepare and order the necessary equipment. Age will also play a factor when you get braces. If the patient is young and still have baby teeth or your 12 year molars haven’t come in yet, they will probably make you wait for braces or do other forms of treatment.

What’s included in your first visit?

When you visit us for the first time, you’ll be able to meet our experienced orthodontists, Dr. Todd Gililland , Dr. Shawn O’Bannon , Dr. Morgan W. Gonder and Dr. Shane Radford . One of our orthodontists will become your personal orthodontist!

You’ll meet our friendly team and get a feel for our practice. We pride ourselves on having a family-friendly and inviting atmosphere in all our Mississippi and Tennessee orthodontist offices .

1. Comprehensive exam

We’ll start by taking some digital x-rays and diagnostic photos of your teeth and bite, using the advanced iTero® digital impression system . This technology creates a 3D digital model of your teeth, which your experienced orthodontist will use to get the full picture of your smile. 

Your orthodontist will perform a physical exam and use the x-ray images and photos to identify any orthodontic problems that may be present. This exam gives your orthodontist the information he needs to create your personalized treatment plan and pave the path to your beautiful new smile.

2. One-on-one consultation with a certified orthodontist

Once we have the information we need about your smile, you’ll get a one-on-one consultation with your orthodontist, who will explain your current smile condition, discuss your goals with orthodontic treatment, and present our treatment options. 

At GO Orthodontics, we are experienced orthodontists in Mississippi and Tennessee . No matter your age or smile condition, we can treat you with your preferred treatment method. You’ll be able to choose from:

3. Personalized treatment plan

Your personalized treatment plan is included in your initial exam and consultation too! Your orthodontist will develop a custom treatment plan that guides your teeth and jaw bones into alignment.

Your treatment plan will include:

• Photos taken of your current smile
• Simulated photos of your potential new smile produced by the iTero device 
• Your expected treatment time
• Your treatment costs

In the case of early orthodontic exams for our youngest patients, our orthodontists will also address whether it’s the right time to begin correcting your child’s smile and bite. Although most children are ready to begin orthodontic treatment at age 7 (if treatment is necessary), each child is unique and may need more time for their smile to mature for optimal treatment. 

How long will my orthodontic exam take?

Your orthodontic exam will take anywhere from 45 minutes to an hour. This visit gives us insight into your orthodontic health, allows us to discuss your smile goals, develop your personalized treatment plan and guide you to begin treatment with braces or clear aligners. 

Our doctors and team welcome any questions or concerns you may have about your orthodontic conditions, our technologies, or the treatment options available to you. We make the time to answer all your questions – because knowledge is power and your comfort is our goal. So please, don’t hold back on questions when you visit us! 

If you can’t make your scheduled appointment time, please contact us and let us know about 48 hours to 72 hours prior. We know emergencies happen or other responsibilities may take precedence, but this is true for us too. Communicating this as early as possible helps us all!

While we do same day starts (aka help you get your braces on the same day as your first appointment), please let us know when we call to schedule your appointment if that’s something you’re interested in. Our team wants to make sure we schedule your exam accordingly so you can experience a comfortable and fun start to your smile journey! 

What can I do to prepare for my orthodontic exam?

We love that you’re thinking ahead! Being prepared for your first visit ensures that we take as little of your time as possible.

First things first! When you call to schedule your exam (or when our team calls you), have your insurance information ready. Why? Because providing your insurance information to us at this time helps our team easily verify and maximize your orthodontic benefits! 

Before showing up, you can fill out your New Patient Forms online! If you prefer to fill them out in person, you can do that too. Whatever works best for you, we’re here to accommodate you. 

When you come in for your initial exam, make sure you have a valid ID (such as a Driver’s License or military ID), your current dental insurance information, your preferred payment method (bank account numbers or debit/credit card) and a list of questions you may have.

The first questions your orthodontist will ask

When you first arrive in the office for your consultation, we will ask you to fill out some paperwork to establish a basic understanding of your medical history for your orthodontist. In order to make the most educated recommendations for treatment, we need to collect certain pieces of information to fill out your patient profile. This will inform us if there is anything we need to avoid, if you have allergies, or if you have specific concerns with your teeth or health.

Meeting the staff

One of the most important parts of your consultation is meeting Dr. Hutta or Dr. Price and our practice’s staff members. These are the people who will be there for you throughout your treatment and at every future appointment. It’s important to get to know and trust your new orthodontic team. And we want to get to know you, too! From the receptionist who schedules your appointments to the orthodontists and our assistants who deal with your teeth, we are here to support you—starting at your first visit through the end of your smile transformation.

First exam and X-rays

Before braces or Invisalign ® , our orthodontists and assistants must assess your unique anatomy, bite, teeth, jaw, and facial development. This is why we often conduct X-rays on the day of your consultation.

What the orthodontists look for and why

Before we even look in your mouth, we will take panoramic and cephalometric X-rays to visualize your bones and teeth—from root to tip! X-rays reveal underlying problems before treatment begins, such as erupting wisdom teeth, missing teeth, or problems that may progress with time. Additionally, X-rays provide orthodontists a way to visualize the position of your jaw, teeth, and bite prior to treatment. This will inform their treatment recommendation (whether that’s braces, Invisalign, palatal expanders, or other appliances). As needed, we may take more X-rays throughout treatment.

What to know if you’re getting braces for the first time

So, you’re new to braces. Whether you’re an adult or a child, this can be overwhelming at first. Do I get braces or Invisalign? How much time is it going to take? How often do I need to come see my orthodontist? These are all very normal questions, and you probably have many more coming into your consultation. Relax—you’re in great hands! Rest assured, we will answer your questions every step of the way. The most important thing is that your smile transformation will boost your confidence and wellness for years to come.

Important details about child orthodontics

When it comes to kids and orthodontics, treatment may be more streamlined and less invasive than if they waited for care until becoming adults. When children start treatment early—before losing all of their baby teeth—our experts can influence the child’s facial growth, preventing issues from developing, decreasing long-term risks for cavities and gum disease, and making everyday activities like eating and breathing easier.

A child who hasn’t yet lost all of their baby teeth may receive interceptive treatment, whereas people who have already lost all of their baby teeth may be treated in a singular phase of braces or Invisalign. Our experts recommend bringing in kids for an appointment to visit the orthodontist by age 7.

Your options for treatment

Modern braces are a fantastic, tried-and-true, flexible, and effective treatment. What to Expect

Step 1: meet your team.

First, you’ll be greeted with a smile from our friendly team. (You can expect this at every visit!)

Our new patient coordinator will give you a tour of the office and get to know a little bit about you. Next, we’ll begin your orthodontic exam.

Step 2: Get digital x-rays & photos

Using the advanced iTero® Element digital scanner , we’ll take quick impressions of your teeth and bite. (None of that weird goopy putty necessary.)

The iTero device produces an easy, comfortable digital scan for your orthodontist to assess your smile, but it can also create a simulated preview of your treatment results. You’ll get a sneak peek of your beautiful new smile before you even begin treatment.

We’ll take digital x-rays with our low-radiation digital x-ray machine. Your orthodontist will use these diagnostic photos, digital impression scans and x-rays to create your personalized treatment plan.

Step 3: Meet your orthodontist

We’ll head over to our consultation room where you’ll meet your orthodontist! Dr. Morejón or Dr. Andrews will perform an in-person detailed exam of your teeth and bite. 

Your orthodontist will discuss all findings with you, present you with our treatment options, and discuss what you can expect throughout your orthodontic journey.

We often get asked “What can I expect at my child’s first orthodontic visit? So, we’ve created a list of the top 5 things you and your family can expect when attending a complimentary orthodontic consultation at RPDO.

Introduction to RPDO:

We take pride in offering excellent care for patients of all ages (even adults!) in a fun, relaxed environment. Whether your child already sees one of our pediatric dentists, or you’re new to RPDO, our team of skilled Treatment Coordinators and Orthodontists are excited to meet you and your family! You can expect lots of smiles, laughs and feeling like family by the time you leave. With offices located in Richmond, Glen Allen, Midlothian, and Ashland we offer convenient care that fits even the busiest of schedules.

Medical and Dental History:

Before getting started, you’ll be asked to fill out paperwork regarding your child’s dental and medical history. The treatment coordinator will use this information when determining the best orthodontic treatment options for your child.

Oral Examination and Imaging:

The next step of your first orthodontic visit includes getting up-to-date x-rays and photographs of your child’s teeth, jaw and bite orientations. AAO's Guide to Your First Visit at the Orthodontist

When I meet a new patient for the first time, one of the questions I often ask them is, "How do you feel about being here?"  Lots of kids are excited about getting braces because they've seen friends of siblings with them.  In many other cases, however, I simply receive a shy smile, and Mom or Dad explaines, "I think he/she is a little nervous!"

If your first visit makes you a little nervous, rest assured, you're not alone!!  It's normal to feel a little nervous visiting a new place or doing a new thing for the first time, and a trip to the orthodontist's office is no different. Knowing what to expect can make a world of difference both to young patients  and their parents.

In our office, a new patient appointment begins with a tour of our new office so that you can see where and how you might spend your time once you're in treatment.  One of our orthodontic technicians will take some photos of your teeth and a panoramic x-ray before Dr. Liz or Dr. Bethany spends some time with you to do an exam of your teeth and bite and to discuss treatment options.

Some important things to know about our first appointment?

• It's painless!  Every part of this process should be comfortable and easy for our new patient.  In fact, it should actually be fun!
• It's cost-free!  You won't have any financial obligation after your new patient exam.  We'll let you know if treatment is needed and discuss options  before you would make any commitments.
• We're flexible.  If your little one is worried that they might get braces on when they show up, you can reassure them that there is no need to start treatment the same day.  At the same time, if your child is ready and raring to go, we can likely find time to get the ball rolling right away.
• The purpose of this visit is two-fold.  1) We want to determine whether our new patient will need treatment, and 2) We want to determine whether this is the right time to start.  We'll guide you through the process from there!

What to Expect During Your First Orthodontist Consultation

If you are preparing for your first visit to an orthodontic office, consultations have come a long way over the years and so has the entire teeth straightening process. These days, we are all about fun and amazing smiles! Because of some of the latest technology like Damon™ Braces, orthodontic treatment can be easier and allow for shorter treatment times than traditional braces. My name is Roxanna Jones and I am the Treatment Coordinator for Dr. Buchanan Orthodontics in McKinney, Texas. I am one of the first people in the office that our patients meet. I have worked in Orthodontics for over 25 years and have seen thousands of incredible smile transformations. It still brings joy to my heart to see the happiness and confidence a great smile gives each patient.

Doctors who do braces usually offer a complimentary first visit appointment for braces and finding a board-certified orthodontic specialist is important. Orthodontist specialists (braces doctors) receive 3 years of extra training beyond dental school and are specially trained in the complex study of jaw and tooth alignment.

A Typical First Orthodontics Consultation Visit

During your braces consultation your treatment coordinator (TC) will take photos of the face and teeth as well as a panoramic x- ray or I-CAT 3-D scan. There is no need for any anxiety during this appointment since it is very easy. This is done so that the orthodontist can properly evaluate your teeth, jaws, and bite and recommend a treatment plan. Once that is completed, your TC will explain a little about different treatments offered in the office, give you a tour of the office, and ask about any main concerns you may have. If you have any questions or concerns from your dentist, a spouse, or your child, having them written down really helps. We will review all of this information with you during the visit and you will get a printout of everything you need.

Reviewing Your Teeth Straightening Options

Once the orthodontist has reviewed your records, different treatment options such as Damon Braces will be discussed and the best custom treatment plan to use will be recommended. Your orthodontist will also give you an estimated time of how long the treatment will take and explain how the braces will work . Your TC will then review when to come in for adjustment appointments and what to expect during and after treatment. The TC will also go over all the different payment options and explain any insurance benefits. Most offices can get started with the first braces appointment that same day to save you time. You will be so happy with your new smile and it is an investment that will last a lifetime!

It’s common for children to see an orthodontist, but you’re never too old to get started on a beautiful smile. So whether you’re looking to correct your smile or your child’s, an orthodontist is here to help. But before scheduling your first appointment, you’ll need to set up an orthodontist consultation.

Medical & Dental History 

Before getting started, the first thing your orthodontist will do is have you fill out important paperwork regarding both your medical and dental history. Both are extremely important. So, try to make sure that everything you fill out is correct.

The orthodontist looks through all your dental records. This helps determine the last time you saw a dentist, the last time you had x-rays done, and more. This information combined with your general medical history is all taken into consideration by your orthodontist before further decisions are made. 

Each individual circumstance is different from the next because everyone has different needs or dental issues. 

Oral Examination & Imaging

The next step of the orthodontist consultation is an oral examination and imaging. Completing an oral examination allows your orthodontist to see any issues that might not have come up in your records. For example, you might have a cavity that needs filling and must be done before having braces put in place. 

The examination may include the following:

• Oral examination using hand tools where your gums and teeth can be examined 
• Dental molding using a dental putty that molds to your teeth 
• Dental imaging in the form of x-rays that may include both your teeth and jaw 

It’s a process very similar to a normal dentist visit. And if you have experience at the dentist, then this should be a familiar experience. The oral examination and dental imaging determine what dental care needs to take place before moving forward.

There may be outstanding dental issues that need to be addressed and corrected before receiving orthodontic care. And an orthodontist can detect minute dental issues in children regarding their teeth and jaws while baby teeth are still present.

Initial Treatment Plan 

After going through your records and completing the examination, your orthodontist will then put together an initial treatment plan. This treatment plan may include having dental issues corrected first. You will need to schedule an appointment with your dentist to correct the problems.

The treatment also includes what method will be used for the best results and how long it will take to achieve them. The treatment plan is an important step during the consultation because it gives the patient a better understanding of what to expect from the actual procedures they’ll be getting. 

Questions & Answers

Now is the best time to ask any questions that you may have. Your orthodontist will give you an adequate amount of time to think of your questions. He or she will be happy to answer them and walk you through any concerns that you have.

You may also be given educational materials on the service that you’ll be receiving. Usually in the form of a brochure, these materials are helpful and something that you can take home to go over whenever you’d like to. 

Insurance & Payment

Once you’ve gathered all of this information and your orthodontist has everything they need, the next step is discussing insurance and payment options. The orthodontist cost for a procedure differs depending on each individual situation. Your orthodontist will have options for you no matter what the cost.

The office will review your insurance and then discuss with you the next course of action. Financing is also available in a variety of options. The most important thing is making sure that you’re provided with the best orthodontic experience as possible.

And because some insurances don’t cover the orthodontist, it’s important to have financial options available to you.

Scheduling Your First Appointment

The final step or completion of your orthodontist consultation is to schedule your first appointment! If you don’t have any other dental work that needs to be done beforehand, then you’re free to schedule. This is something that can usually be done directly after completing your initial consultation. 

And when planning the best date and time for the first appointment, keep in mind that you may need to allow anywhere between half an hour to an hour for a fitting of braces or Invisalign . So plan accordingly so that you can feel relaxed and you can know exactly what to expect.

Oral Examination & Imaging

The next step of the orthodontist consultation is an oral examination and imaging. Completing an oral examination allows your orthodontist to see any issues that might not have come up in your records. For example, you might have a cavity that needs filling and must be done before having braces put in place.

The examination may include the following:

• Oral examination using hand tools where your gums and teeth can be examined
• Dental molding using a dental putty that molds to your teeth
• Dental imaging in the form of x-rays that may include both your teeth and jaw

It’s a process very similar to a normal dentist visit. And if you have experience at the dentist, then this should be a familiar experience. The oral examination and dental imaging determine what dental care needs to take place before moving forward.

There may be outstanding dental issues that need to be addressed and corrected before receiving orthodontic care. And an orthodontist can detect minute dental issues in children regarding their teeth and jaws while baby teeth are still present.

Initial Treatment Plan

Your child’s first orthodontic visit: what to expect

Childhood is full of milestones, from losing that first baby tooth to the experience of adult teeth coming in. And it’s vital to ensure the teeth growing in do so in a healthy, orderly manner. Whether you or your dentist has noticed a potential problem or you simply want to take a proactive step, you may decide to consult an orthodontist.

This article will help prepare you for the basics of what to expect at your child’s first orthodontist appointment, when to schedule it and how to get ready for it.

When should a child first go to the orthodontist?

It’s never too late to begin orthodontic treatment, even as an adult. However,  the American Association of Orthodontists recommends  that a child’s first orthodontist visit occur by 7 years old. An early checkup will let the orthodontist spot any developing problems early on. Early detection allows early treatment, which can be faster and more straightforward than addressing the issue later. The examination may even allow orthodontists to pursue treatments that will prevent further problems.

A child’s parent or dentist might notice  signs to encourage an orthodontic evaluation , such as:

• Underbites:  In an underbite, the lower jaw sits positioned in front of the upper jaw when the back teeth are closed.
• Overbites:  In an overbite, the upper jaw overlaps the lower jaw when the back teeth are closed.
• Open bites:  In an open bite, upper and lower teeth don’t make contact. Open bites can be either anterior — where the front teeth don’t touch when the back teeth are closed — or posterior — where the back teeth don’t touch when the front teeth are closed.
• Spacing issues:  Teeth may be positioned either too far apart or too close together.

Some issues can be spotted with the naked eye, while others need a closer look. Even if a child’s teeth look perfectly straight, an orthodontist can spot potential problems even while baby teeth are still in place.

An evaluation may show that everything is developing as it should. If there is a developing problem, early orthodontic treatment can help guide jaw growth, adjust teeth into a healthier position and lower the risk of damage to protruding teeth.

Talking to your child about braces

It’s normal to be nervous or unsure when you’re facing a new situation. If your child is feeling uncertain or reluctant about  getting braces , the best thing you can do is help them talk through their fears. Some of the most common concerns that kids have are:

• Pain:  “Is it going to hurt?” This is both the most common and biggest fear when it comes to braces. Luckily, today’s technology and techniques use gentle pressure, making braces far more comfortable than they used to be. While there will still be some discomfort, it should only be minor and temporary. Encourage your child to tell you if they’re in pain, and assure them that you’ll be there to help.
• Embarrassment:  Being different can be especially hard for children. With orthodontics growing more popular all the time, though, your child likely knows at least one person from school or activities who also has braces. If you or someone in your family wore them, pull out old pictures for solidarity. Depending on your child’s preference, encourage them to embrace standing out with colorful bands or consider clear braces to help them blend in.
• New diet:  There’s no way around it — your child may have to give up some favorite snacks or sweets. Try to focus on  what they can still eat  — smoothies made with seedless fruits are always a winner after adjustment appointments. Encourage them to participate in the household grocery shopping so they can pick out things they’ll like.
• Uncertainty:  Your child will likely ask how long they need braces for. While every case is different, your orthodontist will give you an estimated time frame before putting the braces on. Be open with your child about how long it will take. Together, set up periodic milestone celebrations to mark their progress.

Along with any intake insurance information, you’ll also need to provide your child’s medical and dental history. The medical history will help them confirm that your child is healthy enough to treat. The dental history will provide information about any routine dental work or dental surgery your child has completed. The orthodontist will include this information in your child’s diagnostic records, along with the information they gather during their exam. That information can include any pictures and models of the teeth, notes from the visual examination and X-rays.Once the diagnostic records are complete, the orthodontist will be able to diagnose any current problems or potential issues and develop a treatment plan.

Orthodontic exam

The orthodontic exam will likely take up the bulk of this first visit. The first portion will consist of a visual examination very similar to a standard dental exam. The orthodontist will examine your child’s mouth and jaws to evaluate spacing, position and jaw alignment. Someone, either the orthodontist or another staff member, may take photographs of your child’s face and teeth for their records.

Your child’s first exam should answer the following questions:

• Are there any orthodontic problems?  There may be problems the orthodontist can identify based on the visual examination alone. They will likely wait until the exam is fully complete before giving their assessment.
• Will any teeth need to be removed?  Most orthodontists prefer to avoid extraction unless it’s necessary. Extraction may be the best option in cases where a patient has too many teeth or too much crowding.
• What options do you have to correct the problem?  Depending on the issue, orthodontists may be able to offer a variety of solutions for a patient to choose from.
• What is the recommended treatment, and how long is it expected to take?  The orthodontist may recommend a particular treatment option over others. They can also give you an estimate for how long they expect the treatment to take.

X-rays are another vital part of the orthodontic exam. Though the orthodontist will perform a thorough visual examination, some problems are hidden from the naked eye. Approximately  two-thirds of a tooth’s mass  is hidden beneath the gums. To get an accurate idea of what’s happening below the surface, the orthodontist will take a set of X-rays.

The X-rays an orthodontist’s office uses are different from those your child may be used to from their dental checkups. Dentists typically use bitewing X-rays, which help  identify tooth decay and gum disease . Since bitewings only focus on one section of the mouth at a time, orthodontists prefer to use panoramic and cephalometric X-rays.

Panoramic X-rays show the entire mouth in one picture. They help see which teeth have fully emerged, how many are still emerging and if any are impacted. Cephalometric X-rays show one side of the head, including the skull and upper portion of the spine. Orthodontists use these X-rays to examine the teeth in relation to the jaw and to help develop treatment plans.

Impressions

If they believe that treatment is necessary, the orthodontist will also take impressions of your child’s bite. The impressions serve two functions. They are another piece of information for the diagnostic record. Together with the photographs and X-rays, impressions will help the orthodontist develop a treatment plan. The impressions also act as a model for the orthodontist to make appliances — braces, aligners or retainers — custom-suited to your child’s mouth. Orthodontists used to take Impressions physically. The patient would bite down on a putty-filled tray to form the impression mold. Now, most impressions are digital. The process for digital impressions is much faster, and the impression can be completed in just minutes. Digital impressions are also more accurate. There is less need for adjustments or “tweaks” during treatment with the digital method.

Exploring treatment options

Finally, once the orthodontist has completed the exam, they will discuss any concerns they found and what treatment options are available.

Braces are  the most common orthodontic treatment . Brackets are fixed to the teeth and strung through with wires, which are periodically tightened to guide the patient’s teeth into alignment. Tiny rubber bands called “ligatures” or “o-rings” wrap around the brackets to hold the wires in place. Depending on the orthodontic problem, lingual braces — attached to the back of the teeth instead of the front — might be an option.If the orthodontist believes that additional encouragement is necessary for alignment, they may recommend using power chains instead of o-rings. Instead of individual bands for each bracket, power chains stretch across multiple teeth.

Rather than attaching to the patient’s teeth like metal braces, clear aligners are sets of clear plastic trays that gradually guide the teeth into alignment. The orthodontist designs the sets based on the patient’s impressions. The patient wears each set for one to three weeks.

Questions to ask the orthodontist

Starting a brand-new orthodontic process can be daunting. It’s a whole new world that you’re just beginning to explore. You’ll find it’s easy to navigate if you come prepared with any questions you might have. Here are a few orthodontic consultation questions to get you started:

What’s your background and experience?

You probably looked into this when you were choosing an orthodontist, so you already know the answer. Still, hearing how someone describes their history can give you insight into their character and personality. Find out what organizations and associations they belong to. Do they have years of experience in orthodontics, or are they just starting?

How long will the treatment take?

Treatment time will vary from patient to patient based on the complexity of the case. Find out what your expected timeframe will be. Will there be any significant milestones to watch for? What are they, and when should they happen? Orthodontics is a careful process, and having an end date in mind can help you and your child feel like it’s a little more manageable.

How often will we need to come into the office?

Whether it’s for adjustments or just so the orthodontist can check on progress, your child will need to visit the office periodically. The orthodontist will let you know how frequently based on your treatment plan.

Can we see examples of your work?

This is a great way to understand what types of issues an orthodontist sees most often. They should be happy to show you  before and after photos  from their former clients. This can also be an excellent opportunity for your child to see people their age who went through the same process. Seeing the happy smiles in the “after” pictures can help soothe any remaining nervousness.

What do I do for my child at home?

The orthodontist will be able to walk you through the basics of what your child will need to keep up with oral hygiene during this process. They can also offer advice for some of the trickier areas, like flossing around braces. You will get general dietary suggestions, but many offices also provide lists of food to avoid. They may have other suggestions for ways to make this sometimes uncomfortable experience better for your child.

Can you be in the orthodontist’s exam room with your child?

The short answer is yes. An orthodontist’s office is a new place where your child will be going through a brand-new experience. You both might feel a little overwhelmed. And if you have questions, your child probably isn’t sure what to expect at their first orthodontist appointment either. If it would make one or both of you feel better to have you in the exam room, that is where you should be.

If there are aspects of their regular dental visits that your child finds difficult, such as strong smells or other sensory issues, ask the office if they can adjust to accommodate them. If your child does better in a quiet environment, ask to schedule the exam for a time when there are fewer other appointments. The office will let you know if there are any accommodations they can’t provide.

You can also help your child prepare for the visit by giving them an idea of what to expect. Show them pictures and videos of the procedures. If you already suspect braces will be necessary, talk to them about the equipment and appliances. Ensuring they know what to expect going in will help their stress. In cases where the orthodontist does advise braces,  consider clear aligners rather than metal braces. Aligner trays are removed for eating and brushing and are more comfortable and create fewer sensory issues for children with special needs.

What Happen at the Initial Dental Exam?

When patients arrive at the office for the initial dental exam, they may not be sure what to expect. For children, this visit in a new environment can be an anxiety-provoking experience, particularly if they have preconceived notions about what having braces might entail. It can be helpful for patients to know what to expect when they visit an orthodontic practice for the first time. Furthermore, patients should know what to bring to the visit as well to ensure that everything goes according to plan. For the initial visit, there are a few steps that patients should keep in mind.

Patient’s General Information

The first step of the dental exam will be similar to the first exam conducted at the dental office of the primary dental provider. The patient will fill in basic information such as their name, legal guardian’s name if the patient is a child, contact information, and address. This is important so that the office can get in contact with the patient in the event of an emergency. The patient will also list their insurance status so that the practice knows who to contact for billing information. The initial dental exam is usually a pretty simple visit.

Gathering Patient’s Dental & Medical History

After this, the patient may be asked to fill out other forms regarding their medical and dental history or someone from the practice could sit down and take this for them. Any pertinent dental issues from the past will need to be written down including cavities, chronic problems, or root canals. Prior orthodontic work will also be taken. Chronic medical problems should also be listed. Any x-rays that have been performed in the past will be reviewed. If these haven’t been done, they could be taken at this visit.

Full Mouth Examination

Once the medical history has been taken, the orthodontist or exam experts will conduct a physical dental exam of the patient’s mouth to take a look at what the possible treatments are. Once the dental exam has been completed, the orthodontist will give a preliminary diagnosis of what they think the problem might be. The provider will also review some of the possible treatment options . They could give some idea regarding the length of the treatment and possible financial cost. They could review some alternative treatment options as well and state what they believe the benefits of each option might be.

It is important for patients to understand that this is just the first visit with the oral health professional and the preliminary diagnosis could change once a meticulous review of the full set of x-rays and dental records are reviewed. This is why patients need to come back for further visits to ensure that the treatment plan is going to suit the needs of the patient. At your initial consultation, you will meet with one of our highly trained orthodontists who will examine you. The doctor will advise you of his/her treatment recommendations and answer any questions.

If no treatment is needed at this time, you may be placed in our “recall system.” This enables you to receive periodic notices to visit our office again to re-evaluate the need for treatment at a later date.

If treatment is recommended, you will have the opportunity to meet with one of our financial coordinators to discuss fees for treatment, payment options and any questions you have regarding your appointment.

Common questions during the initial consultation are the following:

• Is treatment needed now, or should treatment be delayed until appropriate growth, tooth eruption or other factors have occurred?
• What types of treatment are suitable for my orthodontic case?
• Do any teeth need to be removed?
• How long will my treatment last?
• How much will it cost?
• Will my insurance cover any portion of my treatment?
• What arrangements are available for payment?

As each orthodontic case is specific to the patient's needs, we will be able to answer many more treatment based questions after careful examination by our orthodontist during your complimentary consult ! You will leave your consultation knowing exactly how long treatment will last, treatment options (Ceramic Brackets, Invisalign, Incognito) and how much your orthodontic treatment will cost you. OutDaughtered : Danielle Busby Is Stunned by Revelation Her Quintuplets Need $35K Worth of Dental Work (Exclusive)

In PEOPLE's exclusive clip from the season 10 premiere, the quintuplets take their first trip to the orthodontist

The Busby girls are growing up — and things are starting to get expensive!

In PEOPLE’s exclusive look at OutDaughtered 's season 10 premiere, Danielle Busby gets the shock of a lifetime when the girls visit the orthodontist for the first time. While there, Danielle learns that all five of them will need orthodontic treatment once their permanent teeth grow in.

The clip begins with Parker, 9, being examined by the orthodontist, who says she has an underbite. “I brushed for two minutes cause you’re supposed to brush them for two minutes," she says.

Her sister, Hazel , pushes back at that, telling Parker: “You don’t even brush your teeth that much."

"Yeah I do," Parker replies, though Hazel insists, "No, you don't."

When it's Olivia's turn with the orthodontist, Danielle is informed that she'll need "full braces" once all her permanent teeth come in. She also has an overbite.

In a confessional with all the quintuplets, Riley , who is told she has an underbite, claims, "Ava brushes the worst 'cause her teeth has brown spots on these teeth," as she points at her front teeth.

"The doctor said you gotta stop eating blueberries and strawberries but I don’t care," Ava replies. She later reveals she was told she has both an over and underbite.

Riley then shares a story her dad, Adam Busby , has told her. "My dad said the tooth fairy's whole entire body's covered with teeth. Even the feet, even the eyes," she says, with Parker adding, "Even the wings."

"It's scary. Really scary," Riley admits.

After all five girls are examined by the orthodontist, Danielle hears what the total damage will be when they all receive the orthodontic treatment they need to fix their teeth: an estimate of $35,000.

"$35,000?" Riley asks as Danielle covers her face with her hands in shock. "That’s a lot of money."

“$35,000? That’s insane," Danielle admits. "I mean, I should’ve just took one. It probably would’ve felt less, like, wah.”

As the clip ends, Parker asks, "Are you doing it today?”

In the new season of OutDaughtered , the quintuplets, who turned 9 in April, are starting third grade, while their older sister, Blayke, 13, is juggling "her middle school schedule and social life," leaving Adam and Danielle "struggling to keep up."

"The quints are learning how to read and taking on more chores around the house. Adam and Danielle can start to see which of the girls is thriving and who needs a little extra attention," reads an official synopsis. "Blayke is attending tryouts for the school volleyball team, and she's worried she won't make the cut."

"Adam and Danielle are a great team managing their six kids, but some days, it can be overwhelming. Adam has been the main caregiver the past few years, but now that he is taking more jobs out of the house, will the Busby’s have to hire additional help?" the synopsis continues.

The new season also features a family trip to Walt Disney World Resort in Florida, "meet ups with other families of multiples" and a fun experience cheering for the Houston Texans.
