Review: Brian Jonestown Massacre at Astor Theatre

Brian Jonestown Massacre at Astor Theatre w/ Humble Armada Monday, November 13, 2023

Returning down under for the first time since 2019, The Brian Jonestown Massacre’s Monday night gig at the Astor Theatre was an absolute shemozzle as Captain Anton Newcombe and his fellow buccaneers steered the good ship BJM right into the rocks. While the BJM has weathered a multitude of storms over nearly three decades at sea, this in no respect means they have become more adept at avoiding choppy waters, and Monday night’s gig showed just how close they are to sinking at any given moment.

Support on the night came from upcoming locals Humble Armada . The group’s mix of poppy rock seasoned with shoegaze and psychedelic tones fitted perfectly with the mood of the crowd. Lead vocalist and guitarist Matt Simich , resplendent in an 'Eat Shit' t-shirt, led the group through a tight set that included the dreamy September 24 and the rockier Tend To from the group’s sophomore album Tomorrow’s Today.

Humble Armada

After a sizeable wait, The Brian Jonestown Massacre made their way on to the stage, only to commence with a false start, with band leader Anton Newcombe stopping the band less than thirty seconds into opener #1 Lucky Kitty , for reasons known only to himself.

The band relaunched into the song, and were able to move onto a few more choice cuts from their two most recent LPs, 2022’s Fire Doesn’t Grow On Trees and 2023’s Your Future Is Your Past , but the tension on stage between Newcombe and the band was palpable.

After Do Rainbows Have Ends? Newcombe sat to the side of stage, requiring a hug from guitarist Ryan Van Kriedt before continuing on. However things soon again came to a grinding halt after feedback had Van Kriedt bring Wait a Minute (2:30 to Be Exact) to a stop and Newcombe angrily berated the sound desk.

By this point, the BJM ship had really started to take water. Mainstays Joel Gion and Ricky Maymi stayed calm by keeping their distance from Newcombe and played their parts, but Anton continued to berate the other band members before he then turned on the audience. After You Think I’m Joking , Newcombe started on a long-winded rant that was high in word count but low in logic. As the rant slowed, there were some cheers from fans in the front row, which Newcombe took as an interruption and an insult. He demanded that two fans be removed from the show before a roadie/minder came to his aid and calmed the situation.

The Brian Jonestown Massacre

That Girl Suicide got off the ground to the pleasure of the audience, but a long pause and more passive-aggressive debate and posturing between the band and the audience followed, taking all the wind out of the sails. Van Kriedt advised the audience that the group’s ire was at their band manager for “booking us all on too long of a tour” as bottles of Grey Goose vodka appeared and were handed around by the band members.

A few more tunes followed, Forgotten Graves being a standout, but it was not long before band members began to disappear off stage. This did not stop Anton, however, from playing on. A guitar tech took the bass while the bassist took up drums, which signalled the start of an improvised jam that bobbed along nicely in the now choppy waters.

Ultimately, the performance once again proved that The Brian Jonestown Massacre are for real. While the tension within the group must be exhausting, as well as the chaos that it brings, no one could ever say that the band is fake. Unfortunately, this does mean that the group’s one true consistency is their inconsistency. But perhaps this is what makes the BJM the BJM?

Review: The Brian Jonestown Massacre at SWX

Review: The Brian Jonestown Massacre at SWX

"a typically chaotic two hours from one of rock n roll's last great eccentrics ".

Anyone who has seen the 2004 rockumentary ‘Dig!’ knows the tumultuous nature of The Brian Jonestown Massacre. Equally, anyone who has listened to Take It from the Man! or Thank God for Mental Illness (both 1996) knows how brilliant their music can be at times.

That’s why, whenever there is the opportunity to catch Anton Newcombe and co in action, I do my best to catch them. It seems that I am not alone either, with the band’s appearance at SWX at the weekend proving a sell-out. Despite it being a Sunday, there was a real buzz in the air with gig-goers both young and old descending on Nelson Street.

The BJM have never been ones to do things in a traditional manner and this proved to be the case here with the only support act being The Magic Mod, “rock’n’roll’s favourite magician” who has warmed up for the likes of Paul Weller and The Libertines in the past.

brian jonestown massacre tour 2023 review

It was then the turn of the main attraction as the six-strong band took to the stage with the most resounding cheers coming for the ensemble’s maverick frontman, and only consistent member, Newcombe and iconic mutton-chopped percussionist, Joel Gion.

The first of many interactions that Newcombe had with the audience saw was to mention the good work BJM do with their ticket raffles. Each (almost always sell-out) show sees the band give away a handful of tickets, selected at random from fans who donate a small amount to charity.

And then they were off. It can take time to take in the sheer sonic power of The BJM with an impressive setup of four guitarists, often all playing the same riff to create a hypnotic wall of sound that washes over the audience. The sound was not quite right for the early numbers, but this was soon fixed as the band played out epic renditions of their discography – and their blend of sludgy psych rock and shoegaze suits a dirtier sound anyway.

brian jonestown massacre tour 2023 review

Spanning over 2 hours, the set saw the band play more than 10 tunes both old and new with Newcombe’s signature off-kilter voice acting as an instrument against the intense, overloaded sonic landscape that is created by the sheer number of amps onstage.

However, as one may expect from the indie icons, the epic two-hour set was not all plain sailing – and who’d want it to be? Newcombe was in classic disruptor form, embarking on long monologues throughout that were difficult to make out other than the occasional slurred expletive.

At one point the celebrated multi-instrumentalist praised Bristol for pulling down the statue of Colston and, before playing the blistering track ‘The Mother Of All F*****s’, Newcombe told a story that ended with him declaring: “there’s nothing wrong with f****** mothers”.

brian jonestown massacre tour 2023 review

Equally entertaining were Newcombe’s occasional spats with his bandmates. While perhaps not quite as exciting as the dramatics seen in ‘Dig!’, this is clearly something that the ensemble must often deal with as the frontman’s shout of “We can either play this set or I can come over there and sort you out”, was met with bemused smiles.

On another occasion, the band were stopped by Newcombe halfway through a song with the perfectionist frontman declaring: “You’re not fucking syncopated!”. However, he was proved to be correct as the final 20 minutes of music was one of the most exciting demonstrations of musical inventiveness that I’ve seen from a heavyweight band such as The BJM.

For the final two numbers of the set, the already amp-heavy ensemble welcomed both techs to the stage, both armed with guitars. What followed was a 10-minute sonic blitz that captivated the sold-out crowd and clearly transported the sunglass-wearing BJM to a different plain altogether.

brian jonestown massacre tour 2023 review

No encore here, this was pure rock n roll with Newcombe and one of his bandmates teasing the audience with a few minutes of reverberating feedback, followed by a quick record signing a heartfelt thank you.

Overall, this is exactly what any Brian Jones Massacre fan wants from a show: an incredible 2-hour long set of psychedelic rock with a healthy dose of unpredictability from Anton Newcombe, without the whole thing falling to pieces. Well worth a late bedtime on a Sunday night!

Psychedelic rock legends The Brian Jonestown Massacre return to Australia in 2023 bringing favourites and as ever, new material from their storied career.

Lead by the singular visioned drive of Anton Newcombe and a revolving cohort, The Brian Jonestown Massacre have delivered an unrelenting schedule of recorded output, some 20 studio albums, 14 EPs, five live albums, six compilation albums and 22 singles, a majority independently through the band’s self-sustaining A Records.

Brooklyn Vegan commented on the latest studio album release The Future is Your Past, “Newcombe is clearly energized and that comes through loud and clear”.

Album number 20, The Future is Your Past which, like its 2022 predecessor Fire Doesn’t Grow on Trees, came out of an intense prolific streak during the height of covid with Newcombe writing and recording a song a day for 70 days straight. His amalgam of classic lysergic rock, hazy shoe gaze and mellow drone continues to be refined as the writer shows he inhabits a rarefied stratosphere of endless inspiration.

After extensive US and European tours since the re-opening of the planet, The Brian Jonestown Massacre are now set to play dates across Australia. Get your tickets HERE

LIVING COLOUR- Brian Jonestown Massacre’s 20th Album ‘The Future Is Your Past’ Review

Emerging from the same post-writer’s block flurry as 2022’s fire doesn’t grow on trees , brian jonestown massacre’s 20th album comes with a pack of pencils, so you can colour in the cover yourselves., it’s a suitably fitting metaphor for the spacey feel of the album, which encourages the listener to engage, fill in the blanks and enjoy the parts where songwriter anton newcombe occasionally goes over the lines..

The band’s only constant member since 1995 debut Methodrone , Newcombe presides Mark E Smith -like over an ever-changing roster of collaborators.

Assisting him on The Future Is Your Past are Icelandic guitarist Hakon Adalsteinsson (The Third Sound), with Berlin-based Uri Rennert on the drums.

Both leave their mark on the album, which treads familiar BJM territory of shoegaze, fuzzy drone guitars and psychedelia.

But there are signs that a prolific burst of activity, which Newcombe says saw 70 songs tracked in as many days, coincided with an expanding musical horizon.

brian jonestown massacre tour 2023 review

Eastern influences abound on opener Do Rainbows Have Ends , while the The Light Is About To Change  is a full on glam-rock stomper – like The Sweet jamming with The Fall .

All The Feels ‘ is an intriguing slice of Americana and closing track Stuck on Yous comes across as a stately chamber piece.

Velvet Underground -influenced single Fudge is one of several psych-tinged numbers, along with the warm, pastoral ’60s sounds and backwards guitars of As The Carousel Swings .

Ever the anglophile, Newcombe goes all John Lennon on Cross Eyed Gods and a bit Richard Ashcroft on the aptly-titled wig out The Mother of All Fuckers.

His studio wizardry – so evident on his Diabolique link-up with Emmanuelle Seigner and The Limiñanas – is in fine fettle here too.

However you can’t help wondering if Newcombe sometimes releases too many records for his own good.

Instead of two very decent LPs – in Fire … and The Future … – BMJ might perhaps have made one truly exceptional album.

  • Brian Jonestown Massacre Release The Future Is Your Past on A Recordings on 10 February 2023
  • BMJ are on a tour of the UK and Ireland now. For full dates visit the band’s website here

  THE BRIAN JONESTOWN MASSACRE

The Brian Jonestown Massacre

Available on 180 grm clear vinyl LP , comes in superb deluxe packaging

Brian Jonestown Massacre burst into 2019 with the release of their 18th full-length album, just 7 months after their last one. The self-titled 9-track album is released on Anton Newcombe’s A Recordings on 15th March 2019. It was recorded and produced at Anton’s Cobra Studio in Berlin.

The album was originally going to be released in September, but due to a hugely successful global tour – taking in USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and Europe the release was delayed.

Recorded this time last year, the album features Sara Neidorf on drums, Heike Marie Radeker (LeVent) on bass, Hakon Adalsteinsson (BJM / Third Sound & Gunman & Holy Ghost) on guitar and Anton Newcombe on multiple instruments. Also making a guest vocal appearance on ‘Tombes Oubliées’ is Rike Bienert who has sung on previous BJM albums. The band performed songs from the album throughout the European leg of the 2018 tour.

Anton Newcombe has been a very busy man these past 5 years, having released 4 critically acclaimed Brian Jonestown Massacre albums and an EP, 1 soundtrack album and 2 albums with Tess Parks. All releases were fully recorded and produced at Anton’s studio.

The Brian Jonestown Massacre track ‘Bon Bon’ was used in the 2015 Palm D’Or winner Dheepan. Anton penned the soundtrack for ‘Moon Dogs’, a film directed by multi-BAFTA nominated Philip John (Svengali, Downton Abbey, Being Human).

Tracklisting

1) Drained , 2) Tombes Oubliées , 3) My Mind Is Filled With Stuff , 4) Cannot Be Saved , 5) A Word , 6) We Never Had a Chance , 7) Too Sad To Tell You , 8) Remember Me This , 9) What Can I Say

The Brian Jonestown Massacre Vinyl

THE BRIAN JONESTOWN MASSACRE ‘POL POT’S PLEASURE PENTHOUSE’ VINYL 2XLP

First time available on vinyl , the only ever time this album has been officially released was on  Burger Records  (which was limited to 500 cassettes) .

Recorded in 1990/91 on a 4 track at Anton’s home in San Francisco, it is best described in Anton’s own words. “when I left home and moved to san francisco, first thing on my mind was joining a band… the problem for me was that there were not any bands that would have me or even played the type of music I imagined I wanted to hear… so I decided to start my own… I would make small down payments at pawnshops for gear, buy recording machines, amps, guitars, whatever. within 3 months of teaching myself the 7 folk chords I use nonstop to this day, I had already taught a few new friends how to play as well and we were off. I used to make up songs everyday on the 4 track just to teach myself how to write… I understood what i liked about music, I just didn’t know how to pull it out of the ether and bring them into being. At the same time, I would make demo tapes and share them with friends… endless demo tapes… I would send them to magazines and record labels with no return address, just for the fuck of it. It was never my intention to actually release this music… for instance if i came up with a country song, I would finish it just to learn more about writing… I didn’t want to be in a classic country group, this is a document of my learning process. good times… this album is one such tape from 1990/91 I can’t remember. enjoy.”

Live reviews

We were lucky to see The Brian Jonestown Massacre live on stage in Hamburg‘s Knust club. The show was great! So powerful and energetic, Anton singing and playing in a great shape (though spending some time with the retuning of the instruments ;-) ). Supported by Moogy who also sang „Anemone“, one of my favourite songs. The BJM played new songs from the new „Something Else“ album that sounds so very nicely „retro“ and many great songs from the earlier days (among others „Who“, „When jokers attack“). It was loud and very, very hot (due to an abnormal summer in Northern Germany). Joel cheered the audience with his tambourine and Anton even turned his fan to us, helping us with a cool breeze. Although The BJM played quite long, we were sorry to watch them leave (no farewell) and not return again for an encore. We waited as long as possible, but, maybe due to the exhausting temperatures in the club, remained unheard. Anyway, it was a wonderful gig and the size of the club allowed us fans to get in touch with the band. The light show was, as usual, very nice, too. I definitely recommend to go and see The BJM live, it‘s so worth it. The records are already awesome but live they are just brilliant and even better. By the way, „LeVent“ (A Records!) supported the show and they were really great, too, so it was a georgous evening.

I had heard that Anton had turned a new leaf with age, so I tried my luck. I'm not a fan of the meltdowns or the whining as some are. Alas, it was like visiting my racist grandparents whom seem to exist out of time. It's just a part of him, I guess.

He was one guitarist short (I'm not surprised), which he mentioned no less than 5 times to excuse the poor performance.

He berated his keyboardist.

He berated his lead guitarist.

He physically / forcefully adjusted his rhythm guitarists head position relative to the microphone they were sharing.

He did show a glimmer of levelheadedness here and there, but it was heavily outweighed. I don't know if the show was good. I know that it was OK until he kept pointing out everyone's flaws. I was too annoyed and distracted by the abuse. And in case anyone is wondering, he did fake a British accent live.

I was prepared for a 3 to 11 hour show, I think it was a little over two hours. Not blaming them, just putting that out there. Also, it's possible that the guitarist was legit not there for unrelated reasons and tensions were high due to having to come up with a new set list and rehearse on short notice. Also, no encore. I don't know.

Compared to the Dandys show last year, forget about it. No comparison. Dandys Rule OK.

The Brian Jonestown Massacre started their group in San Francisco in the late 80's. They had a heavy feel of psychedelic rock and other tones such as blues and raga.

When they come out on stage you could see they way about them and their music was pure to who they were and to the era they were playing in. They combined a variety of different instruments into their sets with such things as Indian drones, sitars, mellotrons, farfisas, didgeridoos and tablas. The lead singer comes out in a denim jacket and the rest of the group as a hippie and indie look to them. The stage is black until their lighting kicks in and then the whole feel and attitude changes.

Playing live they have a variety of things going on around them to entertain and amaze the audience. Bright colors flash and change giving a retro vibe to each song they play. When they play the move around a lot and have a vibe that can remind one of the Ramones and various others. The audience is filled with adoring fans and their numbers range in the hundreds. All of them moving and grooving with their set and really digging the sound. For when they played it was really something to have been seen, especially live.

The Brian Jonestown Massacre last night. Swirling, Jangling, sumptuous guitar’s: raging with keyboards and rhythm lines roaring beneath, some say psychedelic, “shoe gaze”, folk-rock, or garage, but by any descriptive, adjective; a dreamy transcendent rock band with a bent toward perfection, (three songs good-naturedly stopped for broken strings). Since 1990 and always closely associated with The Dandy Warhols, (another killer band not enough people know about), liquid symmetry between the band Anton Newcombe formed in San Francisco, ethereal sounds and lyrics ended, without encore—-because, you knew they had completed something special when you floated out to the street.

BJM were awesome last night in their Brooklyn debut at the new Brooklyn Steel venue. Anton Joel Ricki and crew did not disappoint and treated the large adoring crowd to an evening of impromptu jam, trance, and psychedelia. They sprinkled their show with a catalogue of well known past songs as well as some more contemporary issued songscapes, with the crowd at times rocking and bopping. One disappointment show was cut short by curfew ending at 11PM and only two hours in length. However, Anton managed to cram in as many songs as he could in this alotted time. Can't wait to see them again!!!! Fred

PS: SongKick kicks song!!! Easy to use and no hassles. I love my songkick.

Ah, honestly one of my favourite bands, wish that I could say I enjoyed the show but it wasn't all that. They have such a huge discography there's basically no guarantee you'll hear any of the songs you like (I only knew a couple), and none of their music sounds anywhere near as good live. That coupled with bad bouncers and a couple of crazy fans lead to what was easily one of the worst gigs I've been to. Felt like I wanted to leave after a few songs. Still, glad I can say I've seen them, and I'll still proudly wear my BJM T-shirt, but I can't say it was worth the price of the ticket: maybe if you're out of it.

Not sure if the rolls of electric waves came from being in such close proximity to the stage or cacophony of sound, but BJM is still in my head and blood - thank god. If the spark can stay around a few more weeks I will be satisfied with this round but it will be far too long before I get to experience their melodies again in such capacity. Long live the beauty, majesty and evil that comes with The Brian Jonestown Massacre!

well, 4th show in the past year i have bought tickets for, but have had to miss due to personal matters, eating the ticket on...so, i couldn't tell ya. this one and luna def hurt the most, on that figurative "hit to the gut" level. :( as for the cost, i have given more to less worthy causes, so...hope it was as great asi imagine it would be. i do wish we transfer the tickets though. i could have made someone's night.

It was awesome!

We had the chance to sit and talk with Anton before the show about where he's been living and what he had planned for the future.

Very chill and intimate setting...

Then they played a Great set!

Overall, Great venue!

The Brian Jonestown Massacre Announces NZ Tour 2023

04 July 2023 - 0 Comments

Psychedelic rock legends The Brian Jonestown Massacre return to New Zealand in 2023 bringing favourites and as ever, new material from their storied career.

Lead by the singular-visioned drive of Anton Newcombe and a revolving cohort, The Brian Jonestown Massacre have delivered an unrelenting schedule of recorded output, some 20 studio albums, 14 EPs, 5 live albums, 6 compilation albums and 22 singles, a majority independently through the band’s self-sustaining A Records.

"It’s difficult to think of any other artist over the past 30 years whose output has been as prolific or reached the same levels of consistent greatness as Anton Newcombe and The Brian Jonestown Massacre” ( Under The Radar USA )

Album number 20, The Future Is Your Past   which, like its 2022 predecessor Fire Doesn't Grow on Trees , came out of an intense prolific streak during the height of Covid with Newcombe writing and recording a song a day for 70 days straight. His amalgam of classic lysergic rock, hazy shoe gaze and mellow drone continues to be refined as the writer shows he inhabits a rarefied stratosphere of endless inspiration.

Through electrifying live shows and Newcombe’s self-professed love and influence of the sound of the Flying Nun Records output The Brian Jonestown Massacre have grown a loyal and passionate fan base in New Zealand.

After extensive US and European tours since the re-opening of the planet, the band are now set to play Auckland, New Zealand bringing with them their career high new album The Future is Your Past .

“Their 20th album is now upon us and it’s one of the finest things Anton Newcombe has ever released…… they feel like the start of a golden age of The Brian Jonestown Massacre.” ( Clash )

"Throughout there is a sense of making music for the sheer thrill of it. ... This is Newcombe celebrating the moment and at his best." ( Mojo )
