Things To Do
Things to do | barenaked ladies bringing hometown holidays tour to adopted hometown of detroit.
And Detroit is as appropriate a spot as any for one of those.
The Motor City has indeed been a second home for the Toronto group, a supportive border market — “the epicenter of the Barenaked belt,” according to singer-guitarist Ed Robertson — since the band released its first major label album, “Gordon,” back in 1992. It’s also where the group was able to sell out a venue the size of the Pine Knob Music Theatre even before 1998’s “Stunt” album and the hit “One Week” vaulted BNL to worldwide multi-platinum status.
BNL has made some special holiday memories in Detroit, as well, including a Masonic Temple Theatre show to support its 2004 album “Barenaked For the Holidays” album and especially a 1996 radio station concert at the Palace of Auburn Hills where the group recorded a still-popular version of “God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen” backstage with Sarah McLachlan.
“That’s one of those things where you realize that spontaneity is such a huge part of music,” recalls drummer Tyler Stewart. “We’d done a lot of shows together (with McLachlan); we were managed by the same guy and she was very generous with us. So we’re on this same radio show and we’re down the hall and it was, ‘Well, Sarah, why don’t you join us on this?’ We rehearsed it once in the dressing room and went for it. I’m playing a suitcase. Jimmy (Creeggan)’s playing an upright bass, un-mic’d. It sounds like a Charles Mingus recording from 1948.
“So we did it, just like that, and now it gets played on the radio like crazy every Christmas. I can’t believe the legs it has. It’s a part of the liturgy or lexicon of holiday music.”
The Hometown Holidays shows, meanwhile, give BNL “a chance to play those thematic holiday songs we wrote,” according to Stewart, 56. “When you pull them out and play them — things like ‘Snowman,’ ‘Footprints’ and ‘Green Christmas’ and stuff, it’s really joyful to play them. When you get to play songs that you wrote and they’re topical and holiday theme, that to me means I’m actually involved with the holiday. It makes it a lot more fun.”
BNL, meanwhile, has spent much of the pre-holiday year gifting its fans.
The group was on the road with another of its Last Summer on Earth tours, which played during July at Pine Knob. It also celebrated the 25th anniversary of “One Week” but most importantly released a new album, “In Flight,” during September, the group’s 18th studio album overall and its seventh as a quartet after co-founder Steven Page left the band in 2009. It is, to Stewart, “the ultimate statement of the four-piece band,” which recorded the 14-track set in Toronto with producer Eric Ratz, a Grammy and Juno Award winner who also worked on 2021’s “Detour de Force.
“It represents the brotherhood more than any of the other records,” Stewart says. “It was such an involved and collaborative experience this time. We were all around for every note of the recording; we all stayed in the room and we all contributed and we all had ideas. We all put 100 percent of ourselves into it, so that made for a very cohesive record.”
“In Flight” also coincides with the 35th anniversary of the formation of BNL, by Robertson and Page. Creeggan joined for a holiday show in 1989, followed by Stewart a year later. Hearn replaced Creeggan’s brother Andy in 1985. BNL’s run has included eight Juno Awards, a World Music Award and an induction into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame — and is far from over as far as the band members are concerned.
“The celebratory stuff, the anniversaries, the 25 years of ‘Stunt,’ 35 years of the band … honestly you just go: ‘Isn’t that something? ‘Holy s***!'” Stewart explains. “The main thing is we’re a live band. We love playing live. We started in a living room. We used to be all acoustic instruments, for God’s sake.
“I think that’s the difference. We’ve always relied on that spontaneous live band energy, in everything we do. That’s got us through.”
Barenaked Ladies performs at 8 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 5 at Sound Board in the MotorCity Casino Hotel, 2901 Grand River Ave., Detroit. 800-745-3000 or soundboarddetroit.com.

Multi-platinum band Barenaked Ladies announce they are taking Hometown Holidays with Barenaked Ladies on the road across Canada. The tour kicks off in Vancouver on December 1, 2022 and wraps up at Toronto’s legendary Massey Hall on December 22, 2022. BNL will perform holiday fan favourites from the Barenaked for the Holidays album, as well as a few other chestnuts and surprises. These special performances offer fans a rare opportunity to celebrate the season with Canada’s favourite foursome amongst family and friends, many coming together for the first time in three years. For tickets and more information, visit www.bnlhometownholidays.com “We’re bringing Barenaked Holiday Cheer to YOUR Hometown!”, says BNL’s Ed Robertson. “It’s been a couple of long, cold, lonely winters, so let’s have some fun!” Hometown Holidays took over Toronto’s CAA Theatre last December for a multiple-date residency. The seed was planted and many BNL fans across Canada hoped the band would bring the holiday cheer to their hometowns for the holidays. Featuring holiday sing-along classics and BNL’s incredible camaraderie and musicianship, Hometown Holidays is sure to be a memorable and festive event for fans of all ages. In 2020, BNL produced a special holiday live stream featuring performances and sketch comedy with a nod to our collective favourite variety shows from holidays past. Watch BNL perform “Green Christmas” from that 2020 A Very Virtual Christmas special here. Barenaked Ladies recently wrapped up the 6th edition of the popular “Last Summer on Earth” tour. The 36-date North American tour featured some of BNL’s friends and favourite bands Gin Blossoms, Toad the Wet Sprocket, with Kim Mitchell joining the bill on Budweiser stage in the band’s hometown of Toronto. The encore culminated in a memorable ‘supergroup’ performance by BNL and members of all 3 supporting bands, performing the hit song “Handle With Care” from Traveling Wilburys. Tickets go on-sale on Thursday, September 29, at 10am local time, with a presale starting at 10 am on Wednesday, September 28, at www.ticketmaster.ca The presale code is: Hometown

As he was: Harry Styles superfans flock to his tiny hometown's walking tour
HOLMES CHAPEL, England — Customers come from around the world to Simon Wakefield’s bakery in this village in northern England — and not just to sample his quality sausage rolls.
“We get lots and lots of fans,” he says, referring not only to W. Mandeville’s tasty product but also a notable ex-employee: Holmes Chapel’s most famous son and global pop megastar Harry Styles .
“People come in from all over the world ,” the fourth-generation baker says as groups of young tourists crowd into the bakery to take selfies and buy pastries. “All over the U.K., but then Brazil, the U.S., Australia, Japan, everywhere.”
W. Mandeville is one of the stops lining the Harry Styles walking tour that began operating earlier this month in the singer’s hometown, which is about 20 miles from the northwestern city of Manchester. A local not-for-profit set up the tour after growing numbers of fans have flocked there in recent years, with all proceeds going into a fund for the village.
The superfans, known as “Harries,” are led to the Twemlow viaduct — residents say Harry had his first kiss there — which is covered in colorful messages to Harry and has even spawned its own hashtag. They’re also taken through the village, where many line up at Wakefield’s craft bakery to pose for photos with a poster of the former One Direction member as a teenager wearing an apron. Styles mentioned his Saturday job in his breakthrough interview on Britain’s talent show “The X Factor.”
At the Holmes Chapel train station, a life-size cardboard cutout of the “As It Was” singer greets fans, who can sign a message to their idol in a notebook. Those notebooks are later delivered to the star by his dad, Desmond, who lives locally.
Station manager Graham Blake, 62, explains that Styles’ father gave the last five books of fan messages to his son as a birthday present. “He said, ‘He’s got everything,’ and people have put down these stories from the heart. He said, ‘I’m going to wrap it up in a big red bow … because he does love his fans,’” Blake said of Desmond.
On the first day of the tour, a dozen devoted Directioners follow their guides through the village and out through the lush green countryside. Styles superfan Suzanne Tinsley shows her fellow walkers the lyrics she has tattooed on her arms, including “ Treat People With Kindness ,” her favorite song.
“Harry Styles has got me through a lot, he means the world to me,” Tinsley explains. “I know people say ‘It’s just a pop star,’ but when I feel like I can’t get through the day, I just listen to Harry and he makes me feel better,” she said. “He makes me smile.”
The walking tour runs weekly throughout the summer, with tickets priced at 20 British pounds, or roughly $25. Organizers say that demand has driven them to add additional weekend tours due to Taylor Swift fans in the area taking a detour during the U . K . leg of her tour . Swift and Styles dated between 2012 and 2013 and Harry even brought her home to see Holmes Chapel.
Styles also returned in 2013 to film a documentary about his life, “and ever since then, people have watched the documentary and thought, ‘I want to see where this superstar grew up,’” explains 16-year-old Ben McCormick, one of the tour’s guides. “So people are coming, they’re spending money in local businesses, they’re interacting with all the people in the village,” he added. “It’s created a really positive environment that all of us here can get involved with.”

Deon and Karen Derrico ’s eldest child is eager to leave the nest for her college education.
Much to her father’s delight, Darian Derrico tours a college closer to home in Us Weekly ’s exclusive sneak peek at the Tuesday, June 25, episode of TLC’s Doubling Down With the Derricos .
“We do a lot of concerts in here,” a staff member at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, tells Darian, 18, and her parents while showing them around an auditorium. “We make sure that all of our students have the connections in the industry that they want to be in to be as successful as they want to be.”
Darian, an aspiring singer, goes on to ask the UNLV staff member what’s “the most popular genre that students come here to practice?” According to the man, their music students study everything from jazz to opera.

“What’s really cool is you get to take classes with everybody,” he explains. Darian proceeds to question, “An opera singer might work with, like, an R&B singer?” to which he replies, “Yeah. I mean, they could be in the same studio. There’s a lot of stuff happening.”
Deon, 53, seems particularly impressed with the university’s facilities, and its proximity to the family’s home. “All of this is in your hometown. How does that feel?” he asks Darian before the three of them bid farewell to their tour guide.
In a confessional, Darian admits that despite the college visit, her sights are still set on her dream school. “UNLV could be a way to ease into the college experience,” she states. “But NYU is an immersive feeling of, like, ‘I’m doing big things. I’m seeing the world.’ It reminded me, ‘Oh yeah, you want to be in New York.’ I just can’t wait to hear back from NYU.”
As she and her parents begin to exit the auditorium, Darian stops to “take the stage for a moment” and gives fans a glimpse at her singing voice by busting out a short tune.
The clip ends with Deon and Karen, 44, applauding their daughter, with Deon shouting to an imaginary audience, “Darian Derrico, everybody!”

As Darian prepares to make a college decision on the TLC reality show’s fifth season, she recently graduated from high school off the small screen. “I graduated high school!!!!! 👩🏾🎓🎉🎓,” Darian captioned pics and clips from her big day via Instagram on June 10.
Karen also shared a video of Darian singing the national anthem at the graduation ceremony via her own Instagram , writing, “Oh, say can you seeeeee🎶🎶🎶🎶.”

Both Karen and Deon attended the graduation days before announcing they were getting a divorce . “Together, we remain unified in the parenting of our 14 beautiful children — their well-being is our priority,” the estranged spouses told Us in a statement on June 15. “We thank everyone for their understanding and support as we move forward for the good of our family.”
The pair welcomed 14 kids together after tying the knot in 2005, including Darian, Derrick, 13, twins Dallas and Denver, 12, quintuplets Deonee, Daician, Daiten, Deniko and Dariz, 10, Diez, 6, Dior, 6, and triplets Dawsyn, De’Aren and Dyver, 4.
Doubling Down With the Derricos airs on TLC Tuesdays at 8 p.m. ET.

Fans hit the Harry Styles trail on hometown tours
Fans of Harry Styles have long obsessed over every detail of his life, his romances and his childhood.
Now, Harries - as they're known - are being offered guided walking tours of the Cheshire village where the pop sensation grew up.
Tickets go on sale on Thursday, with the tours starting next week.
But the BBC got a preview, alongside a group of teenage devotees. One of them, 17-year-old Jessie, said she was a "lifelong fan".
She said it was "really exciting" to walk in the singer's footsteps, taking in sites such as Twemlow Viaduct, where the singer had his first kiss, and Mandeville's bakery, where he worked part-time.
The Holmes Chapel Partnership, which created the new walking route, hopes it will help to improve road safety in the area.
The not-for-profit organisation has recruited a group of superfans to lead the tours, which will take place throughout the summer.
Leading the sneak preview tour was Gillian Calbi, a 23-year-old from New Jersey, US, who is currently studying in Manchester; and Ben McCormick, 16, who lives in Holmes Chapel and attends Styles' old school.
- Why fans dress up for Taylor Swift, Beyoncé and Harry Styles
Gillian described it as her "dream job", having been a dedicated fan of Styles for more than a decade.
"I've seen him now in concert 10 times, and in total 16 times including One Direction," she said.
Ben described the application process as "tough", explaining: "I've heard that hundreds of applicants applied."
He didn't think he would get the job, but won over the recruiters with his local knowledge.
"They clearly decided they were going to take a shot with me, just like Simon Cowell did with Harry."
Selfies and sweet treats
One of the first stops on the tour is the bakery.
It sells an array of bread-based goods and sweet treats. So far, so normal. But this is where Styles used to work as a teenager, after school and on Saturdays.
A life-sized cut-out of Styles in his Mandeville’s uniform is on display, and fans jostled to take selfies beside it.
Caitlin, 18, has been a Styles fan since she was just four years old. She jumped at the chance to visit his home village, saying: "You get to see where he started, where he lived, and all the people he's met as well."
For 27-year-old Leah, from Liverpool, it wasn't her first trip to Holmes Chapel. In fact, she comes to the village every two weeks to take in Styles' old haunts.
She hasn't yet been lucky enough to run into the singer, though. "I'd love to catch a glimpse of him," she said. "Fingers crossed."
The man who hired Styles as a teenager, Mandeville’s owner Simon Wakefield, said he was "a really nice lad, so easy and down to earth".
The budding singer always turned up on time, and was pleasant to customers, he revealed.
When Styles got an audition for The X Factor, he asked Wakefield if he could take a shift off. "I said, 'Yeah no problem, go for it'," Wakefield said.
"And it just erupted from there.
"It just goes to show it can happen to anyone, at any time."
From village life to global fame
Styles soon became one of the biggest pop stars on the planet.
He shot to fame in the boy band One Direction before launching a successful solo career, with hits including Watermelon Sugar and As It Was.
When he first auditioned for The X Factor, he described his home village as "quite boring", adding: "Nothing much happens there."
But he did concede that Holmes Chapel was "picturesque".

Now, the village has become a must-see for fans.
The Holmes Chapel Partnership said more than 5,000 fans visited in 2023 - almost equalling the village's population of 6,700 - and they have previously taken in the Styles-related attractions pinpointed on its free maps.
Not all of the places where Styles used to hang out have made the new tour, however.
Fortune City, the Chinese restaurant where he took fellow superstar Taylor Swift on a date, was too far away to include, organisers said.
The 180-year-old Twemlow Viaduct is a must-see for Harries, and is on the tour.
Aside from being where the singer had his first kiss, it's also where he famously wrote his name in the One Direction documentary, This is Us.
Fans have now covered Harry’s Wall, as it's known, with their own messages to him.
On the tour, they are encouraged to write on free slate hearts instead, which they pick up from retailer Sam Dale and Son along the route.
Georgia, 18, wrote on her slate: "Harry brought us together."
She explained that she and best friend Charlotte had "really bonded over Harry", and went to see him last year to celebrate their A-levels. "It was a really great experience," she added.
'Keeping visitors safe'
Behind it all, there’s an important safety message.
The two-and-a-half hour tours, which cost £20 per head, were born out of Holmes Chapel Partnership's campaign for safe walking routes throughout the village.
In the past, fans made their way to the viaduct by crossing a busy road, but locals say it’s dangerous.
By taking visitors on a traffic-free route, tour organisers hope to keep them safe.
When the tours were announced, Peter Whiers, chairman of the Holmes Chapel Partnership, said they loved the "enthusiasm people have for Harry".
But he added it was a fine line to balance excitable fans and the reality of a "historic village that dates from the 1400s".
"So this year we are taking a new route to keeping visitors safe by hosting guided tours to popular Harry locations," he said.
The tours will run on Saturday mornings from 8 June, and on weekdays from July to September.
