Trips from 1 January 2023 onwards

From 1 January 2023, Intrepid will no longer require travelers to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19 (excluding all Polar trips and select adventure cruises).

However, we continue to strongly recommend that all Intrepid travelers and leaders get vaccinated to protect themselves and others.

Specific proof of testing or vaccination may still be required by your destination or airline. Please ensure you check travel and entry requirements carefully.

Where is Northeast USA?

Northeast USA is found in the top right-hand corner of the continental United States. There are sometimes different states included in this region, but generally, these states make up the Northeast:  Maine , Maryland, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, Delaware, New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania.

The northernmost states neighbor the Quebec, Ontario and New Brunswick provinces of   Canada . To the east is the Atlantic Ocean, with many of the Northeast states right on the coast. To the west is the Midwest region, and below is   the South . 

How do I get to Northeast USA?

It's pretty easy to get to the Northeastern USA as there are several international airports throughout the states. Some of the largest airports include:

• John F Kennedy International Airport (JFK), La Guardia (LGA) and Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) in New York.
• Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA) and Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD) in Washington, D.C.

Depending on where you'd like to visit, you can also drive in from any other part of the US or even Canada. 

Trainlines and buses also operate in and out of this area which can be great options for those not looking to rent a car.

How will I get around Northeast USA?

Getting around the Northeast as a traveler is generally easy as there is a lot of public transport that operates interstate. Buses can get you just about anywhere in the Northeast, however, long-distance and inter-city trains can take you between several of the major hubs, including New York, Philadelphia and Boston.

Other transport options include the use of private cars, which is great for road trips. There's also the option to fly between certain areas depending on the destination.

When is the best time to visit Northeast USA?

The best time to visit Northeast USA is during the summer from May to August when the weather is at its best. The shoulder seasons can also be good times to visit for small crowds.

If you're looking for a trip filled with snow days and cozy fireside meals, winter in the Northeast is a magical time.

What to pack for a trip to Northeast USA

What to pack on a trip to the Northeast USA depends on your trip type and time of travel. Generally, the climate in the Northeast can vary and change quickly. With that in mind, you should pack to ensure you have warmer clothing, especially for the evening, as well as waterproof items in case of wet weather. 

If you are going on a camping or walking/trekking trip, you will likely need to bring some specialty items, including hiking boots, breathable non-cotton hiking t-shirts, a sleeping bag, a towel and suitable layers for rugging up.

If you are traveling in North America over winter, it's recommended that you're prepared for temperatures that can easily fall below 32ºF. This means bringing waterproof clothing, especially shoes with good grip for walking across snow or ice, as well as cold weather gear such as gloves, thermals, fleece and headwear, such as beanies.

Autumn Colors (9 Days, Boston Airport And Post Trip Hotel Transfer)

Tour director and driver were excellent!!! We were very disappointed with the coach. Something happened and apparently we didn’t get the bus we were supposed to. This bus was old , dirty, the seats didn’t work, some of the windows lost their seal so it was hard to see out of them. The video system didn’t work for the tour director to show pictures. On a positive note the food was great and the accommodations were very nice. The director and driver took it all in stride and that helped. Guess when you spend the amount of money that you do on these trips you expect a little better.

The first phase of the trek to Goecha La will take you from Yuksom to Sachen. Yuksom is situated at an altitude of 5,700 feet and Sachen is situated at an elevation of 7, 200 feet. The trekking trail passes through a route of immense natural beauty. You will come across lush green fields, valley of the Rathong River and thick forests. From Sachen you will need to climb ahead to Tshoka which is at an altitude of 9,650 feet.This trek is quite enjoyable in the initial phase but becomes tryingly steep towards the later phase. On reaching Bakhim, you can enjoy a spectacular view of the Yuksom valley. As you trek on ahead, you pass through Dzongri and Phedang. You will also be able to enjoy the beauty of some of the densest rhododendron forests in India and get a breathtaking view of the highest mountains in the Himalayan range. Best Time to Visit North East

November to April is the best time to visit the northeast  due to the dry weather. When the monsoon rolls in, the roads become impassable and some of the regions like Kaziranga of Assam often experience flooding. The monsoon usually lasts between July to September. Summer is also a good time to visit the northeast if you don’t mind the warm temperatures between 30°C to 36°C. If you consider the northeast as a whole the temperatures vary wildly due to its diverse terrain. The mountains are generally cooler than the plains.

But winter and early summer showcase the best of whatever the northeast has to offer. You are in for a sensory treat, especially if you visit immediately after the monsoon ends. The bright and varying shades of green soothe the senses even as the replenished valleys hide in the mists of monsoon’s memories. The mountains rise out of the mist to add drama to the landscape that would seem incomplete without the soaring peaks. Though it gets bitterly cold in some places, it rarely snows, if ever.

The Kaziranga National Park  teems with abundance and the atmosphere within the park is charged with anticipation. How to Reach North East

You can visit the northeast by road, rail and air from all the major cities of India. But Kolkata seems to be the ideal starting point for the northeast by air. From Kolkata, you can get direct flights to Assam, Manipur, Nagaland and Tripura with regular frequency. Apart from Kolkata, Guwahati’s LokpriyaGopinathBordoloi International Airport is also well connected to many of the major cities around India such as Mumbai, Delhi, Bengaluru, Chennai and Hyderabad. Naharlagun in Arunachal Pradesh and Aizawl in Mizoram enjoy aerial connectivity through helicopter services.

If you prefer to take a train into the northeast, Kolkata again proves to be the hub of connectivity. It has the largest number of trains travelling to the eight northeastern states than any other major city in India. Assam and Arunachal Pradesh lead the others in rail connectivity while Mizoram and Tripura do not even have a railway network. New Jalpaiguri is the closest railway station to Mizoram and Kumarghat is the nearest one for Tripura. However, do note that since the railway network in the northeast is not electrified, trains take longer than usual to reach their destinations.

By far, the road seems to offer the best connectivity to get around the northeast. West Bengal has several buses, government as well as private, running regularly to all the states in the northeast. National Freeways 31, 37, 38 and 40 link Assam with the rest of the country. A private taxi is the most convenient, but the more expensive mode of travel by road.

After breakfast transfer to Tawang. On the way, visit the war cemetery. Continue with the drive till you reach Sela Pass at an altitude of 4114m / 13494 ft. After Breakfast transfer to Bomdila. Check-in the hotel. After lunch, visit Gontse Rabgyaling Monastery (Upper Gonpa), Thumb-Chong Gatsel Ling Monastery (Lower Gonpa). After Breakfast, move towards Mawlynnong & Dawki River. Visit to Mawlynnong village in the East Khasi Hills, famous for its cleanliness and natural attraction. Q. How to reach famous Double-Decker Living Root Bridge in Nongriat?

Nongriat is a small village 12km from Cherrapunji. You can get there by two ways. The first one is take a day trip from Shillong and the second option is drive till cherrapunjee and take a home stay. From shillong you can take your vehicle till a village named Tyrna (70kms / 2.3hrs) and from there on you have to trek for about 4.5kms or 5 to 6 hrs and you have to cross about a couple of thousand stairs to reach the Double Decker bridge. To climb down it takes 1.5 hrs with halts between. And to climb up it takes 2.5hrs with halts in between. For trekking, eat a light and nutritious breakfast before starting. Please wear comfortable shoes and clothing like trekkers pant, rain coat or jackets. Try to carry some dry foods and water with you.

Q. Which is the Best time to visit Dawki?

The best time to visit Dawki is between ends of September to end of July. It is mostly the dry season and gives spectacular view of the river and river bed along with amazing road side view during the journey. Try to avoid rainy season i.e. between first of July to September as during this time the river is on full brink and provide no option for swim and boating.

The main attraction of Dwaki is boating. The crystal clear water is absolutely amazing and even you can view the bottom most part of the river. Hire a boat with Rs.500/hour and sail in the crystal clear water. You can visit the small island in the middle of the river for roaming and photo shooting. We were planning to visit the North East and some ease to access locations. The stay at these places were very comfortable and along with the tranquility and scenic beauty Orchid, Cherrapunjee Resort and Wild Grass Lodge it turned out to be a very memorable and enjoyable stay. Naturewings were also regularly in touch with us and though we really didn't need any help as everything was very well planned out. Must mention the support we got from Ms Arpita and later Mr. Ratul who kept in regular touch.

In the afternoon, we took the Kaziranga Jeep Safari in the central range and that too was great experience. We stayed in a nice resort close to Kaziranga Western Range and resort was very beautiful with nice ambience, food and service were extremely good. Next day, we started for Western Aurnachal and we visited Bomdila, Tawang, Diranga and Bhalukpong and overall Arunachal experience was also very good. We reached Gauhati by air and from there, our Arunachal Tour started with a tour guide cum driver provided by NatureWings. Tawang is a beautiful place to visit while on a North East Package Tour and in early 2020 we got a chance to explore this beautiful place amidst the tough mountains. The highlight of this place is its 400 years old Tawang monastery along with few ads on nearby places like Jaswant Singh Memorial, Nuranang falls, Bumla Pass, Sangetsar Lake, and War memorial. Although the place was undoubtedly great with a good stay, but the food is an issue here as my mother being vegetarian had to rely upon minimal options, but other than that we had a great family time.

Do I need any special permission to visit North East India?

There are selected areas that are counted as Protected Regions where you would need to apply for a permit. However, that doesn’t apply to every region here. No permit is required for Indian or foreign nationals (including Indians with OCI) to visit Assam, Meghalaya, and Tripura. Visiting Sikkim and Arunachal Pradesh requires Inner-Line Permit (ILP) for Indians (to visit certain areas) and Protected Area Permit (PAP) for foreign nationals. Visiting Nathula Pass and Gurudongmar Lake is not permitted to any foreign national. You can apply for these permits online if you want to save yourself from the hassle.
