Omarion visits ‘the hill’

omarion hbcu tour

Omarion, best known for being in the R&B boy band B2K, stopped by Florida A&M University Thursday as part of his HBCU book tour.

His new book, “Unbothered: The Power of Choosing Joy,” dives deep into Omarion’s spiritual journey and how he managed to be centered even through public setbacks that made headlines.

Roughly 75 students and Tallahassee locals gathered at Jake Gaither Gymnasium for Omarion’s Q&A session moderated by Mia Uzzell, a fourth-year broadcast journalism student at FAMU.

Omarion, who was “dubbed the king of unbothered” by his fans, shared what influenced him to write his book.

“My life inspired me, all the things I’ve been through, the ups and downs. I think it’s important for us to share our story; it's what connects us all. You never know what we might be going through and how we can help,” he said.

The singer explained what “unbothered” means to him.

“[Unbothered] doesn’t mean to neglect your feelings or emotions,” Omarion explained. “It actually means to confront what it is that you feel. Being unbothered is such a powerful posture.”

Omarion revealed what readers can look forward to when in his book.

“[Readers] can discover candid stories, especially if you’ve been following my journey. I give some personal details and context to some stories that I haven’t shared publicly. I also talk about becoming a father and how that has inspired me in my spiritual journey.” Omarion said.

Once the Q&A session ended, the audience was guided through “relationship with rhythm,” which Omarion said “circles the energy around in our bodies.”

Omarion directed the audience to lie down on yoga mats and led them through meditation and breathwork with his own meditation soundtrack playing in the background.

Nicole Williams, who specializes in sound bowl healing and meditation, conducted a sound bath for the audience after Omarion finished his meditation.

Williams said she is passionate about doing sound baths and helping others in their spiritual journeys.

“I manifested this,” Williams said. “Being on tour healing people and seeing people get emotional through sound is what I love.”

Jordan Forbes, a junior at FAMU, said after this event, she will try adding meditation to her routine.

“I really liked the sound bowls,” Forbes said. “So maybe I’ll incorporate that into a weekly thing I do because I felt very relaxed.”

The actors' next tour stop is at Elizabeth City State University in North Carolina. Omarion’s book is available to purchase on Amazon, Audible and wherever books are sold.

Jersey-born R&B singer, songwriter, producer, and multi-instrumentalist (drums, guitar & piano) Tone Stith released his debut project Can We Talk in 2017, which garnered rave reviews from the likes of Complex, Billboard and more, and eventually led to Tone’s signing with RCA Records. Stith’s follow up EP in 2018, Good Company, included features from Swae Lee and Quavo and production from Stith, Bongo ByTheWay ( Ty Dolla  $ign,  50 Cent ), The Audibles ( Justin Bieber ,  Chris Brown ), Marcos “Kosine”  Palacios  ( Ella Mai ,  Christina Aguilera ) and THE PRBLM SLVRS. As a songwriter, Tone has penned numerous chart-topping hits, writing and producing on  Chris Brown’s  “Liquor” and “Make Love” and co-writing “Undecided.” He has also opened for H.E.R. in 2018 on her I Used To Know Her Tour. In 2022 Tone released the fan favorite record “B.E.D” and went on his own sold out Set The Tone Tour, which hit 15 markets. Most recently, Tone has finished up his new project – coming soon this August – and just dropped the first single “Girls Like You.” With the anticipation building for his forthcoming EP, Tone Stith is ready to take his place as an R&B mainstay.

Jastin Martin’s  minimalist trap-soul transports you straight to her  Houston  bedroom—one of the few intimate spaces she writes and records her evocative tell-alls. The self-taught singer-songwriter and producer rarely goes a day without creating something—a slippery beat, a shrewd lyric, a silvery guitar line. She’s been writing songs since age nine, and her consistent work ethic has taken her from the dorms of  Louisiana’s   Grambling State University  to  Houston’s  freewheeling open mics to Def Jam’s star-studded roster. Born and raised in  Houston , Martin got her best music education at home. Her family had wide-ranging interests: Her grandfather turned her on to  Bob Marley  and Brooks & Dunn, her mom to  Lenny Kravitz  and Evanescence, and her  Louisiana  grandmother to zydeco. In school, she cycled through a range of instruments, from the violin to the piano. At 15, she recorded her first song in a studio and was hooked. “On my 16th birthday, all I wanted to do was go to the studio,” she says. “I just never stopped.” While at Grambling, she would fly to  Ohio  on the weekends to record at a studio with a local producer, until her mom bought her a full recording setup of her own. Soon, music began to take her over. At 20, Martin picked up the guitar and eventually taught herself how to produce. She most recently released her debut album,  Miss Me Yet?,  a collection of songs that show off her vulnerability and versatility.

The seventies belonged to The Jackson Five, the game changed thanks to New Edition in the eighties, New Kids On The Block ruled the nineties, and Backstreet Boys and NSYNC ushered in the turn-of-the-century. All signs point to WanMor as the definitive boy group of the modern era though. They skyrocketed out of South Jersey and to the doorstep of superstardom in just a few short years. The quartet of blood brothers— Big Boy [19], Chulo [17], Tyvas [16], and Rocco [12]—recharge and reignite R&B with fresh fire and no shortage of timeless vibes and feels. After lighting up streaming platforms, collaborating with everyone from  Stevie Wonder  to  Elmo , going coast-to-coast for  Every Pretty Girl in the City Tour , and causing a frenzy everywhere they go, the group continue to soar higher than ever on their forthcoming full-length debut for  Mary J. Blige’s  imprint Beautiful Life Productions, Inc. under 300 Entertainment. WanMor initially made waves by powering five tracks from  Lil Uzi Vert’s  platinum-certified epic  Eternal Atake  in 2020. The quartet took over television, shining on  America’s Most Musical Family ,  Sesame Street , and  Little Big Shots .  Gayle King  even championed the boys for a special segment for  CBS Mornings . They kicked off 2023 with a historic appearance at the 65th annual GRAMMY® Awards, sharing the stage with  Stevie Wonder ,  Chris Stapleton , and  Smokey Robinson  during the Motown Records tribute. Each move has put them one step closer, notching a nomination in the category of  “Best Group”  at the 2023 BET Awards and “ Best New Artist ” & “ Best Group ” at the 2023 BET Soul Train Awards.

They are back!

It looks like millennials are in for a treat as it was just announced on Friday that “The Millennium Tour 2021” is on the way. Bow Wow and Omarion are set to headline the tour and they are bringing along some of your favorite artists from the early aughts such as Soulja Boy and Ashanti .

Omarion also took to Instagram to post about the tour he will headline without his group B2K.

“ #Millenniumtour2021  FINALLY WE BACK!,” he wrote alongside a video of himself coming out on stage along with the tour date schedule.

It’s unclear why the “Touch” singer is not bringing along B2K but drama surrounded the group back in 2019 when one of the group’s members Lil’ Fizz was dating the mother of the “Touch” singer’s kids. Last February, Omarion said he is open to speaking with Lil’ Fizz, per theGrio .

During an  interview  with  Big Boy , Omarion was uncharacteristically candid and revealed how he found out that his former friend was having a sexual and romantic relationship with the mother of his children.

“I don’t have a relationship with Fizz,” he said of their current status. “But I think there should be an opportunity for us to talk one day. I don’t know when that is.”

The 35-year-old then went on to clarify that he and Fizz had an “in-and-out” friendship for 20 years before Fizz ultimately decided to date his ex behind his back. But they were on the last leg of the first “Millenium Tour” with B2K before he learned what was going on.

“A birdie just kind of floated the info to me,” he said coyly. “That was kind of it.”

The “Let Me Hold You” collaborators will also be accompanied by Sammie , Pretty Ricky , Ying Yang Twins and Lloyd .

The tour was scheduled to kick off last year but was postponed due to the pandemic. Fans took to social media to express their excitement for the tour.

“ Millenium Tour finally rescheduled the concert in ATL and of course Spelhouse Homecoming is the same weekend ,”added a user.

Planning Your HBCU College Tour

If you are planning on visiting HBCUs, there are a few things you need to consider before embarking on your journey. In this section, we will provide you with some tips on planning your HBCU campus tour, including understanding HBCUs, selecting colleges to visit, and tour scheduling and costs.

Understanding HBCUs

Before planning your HBCU college tour, it is important to understand what HBCUs are. These institutions were founded prior to 1964 with the intention of serving the African American community. HBCUs offer a unique experience for students who want to learn about African American culture and history while pursuing their academic goals.

Selecting Colleges to Visit

When selecting colleges to visit, it is important to consider your academic interests, location, and campus culture. You can start by researching HBCUs online and creating a list of colleges that interest you. You can also reach out to college admissions offices for more information on their programs and campus culture. It is important to select colleges that align with your academic interests and career goals.

Tour Scheduling and Costs

Once you have selected the colleges you want to visit, it is important to schedule your tour in advance. Some colleges offer scheduled tours, while others require you to schedule your tour in advance. You can also use tour companies that specialize in HBCU college tours. These companies offer tour packages that include transportation, lodging, and meals.

When scheduling your tour, it is important to consider the costs involved. You will need to budget for transportation, lodging, meals, and any other expenses that may arise. Some colleges offer nonrefundable installment tickets, which allow you to pay for your tour in installments. You can also apply for HBCU scholarships or financial aid to help cover the costs of your tour.

In summary, planning your HBCU college tour requires careful consideration of your academic interests, location, and campus culture. You can research HBCUs online, reach out to college admissions offices, and use tour companies to help plan your tour. It is important to schedule your tour in advance and budget for the costs involved. With proper planning, you can have a successful HBCU college tour experience.

Maximizing the Tour Experience

When it comes to HBCU college tours, it's important to make the most out of your experience. Here are some tips to help you maximize your tour experience.

Rev. West advises students to “treat each day of our tour like the first day of school.” He encourages stepping out of comfort zones and engaging with new people, making each tour a unique learning experience. With a non-stop itinerary, students are immersed in a college-prep atmosphere from day one. They have the opportunity to explore different campuses, attend admissions presentations, and participate in workshops and activities.

Preparing for the Tour

Before embarking on an HBCU college tour, it's important to do your research. Research the schools you'll be visiting and take note of the programs, requirements, and tuition fees. You can also reach out to the admissions office to schedule a meeting with an admissions counselor or to request additional information. Furthermore, you should pack appropriately for the trip. Bring comfortable walking shoes, a water bottle, and a notebook to take notes.

If you're a high school student, you may want to consider joining a program like the Black College and University Tour or the Young Scholars Program. These programs offer organized tours of multiple HBCUs and provide opportunities to meet with admissions counselors, current students, and alumni.

Engagement During the Tour

During the HBCU college tour, it's important to engage with the tour guide and ask questions. Take note of the facilities, programs, and services offered by the school. Also, pay attention to the campus culture and student life. You can ask questions about the student organizations, sports teams, and other extracurricular activities.

It's also a good idea to connect with current students and alumni during the tour. Ask them about their experiences and what they like about the school. You can also ask for advice on applying to the school and how to succeed once you're enrolled.

Post-Tour Actions

After the HBCU college tour, take some time to reflect on your experience. Review your notes and think about which schools you liked the most. Research these schools further and consider applying. You can also reach out to the admissions office with any additional questions you may have.

In conclusion, HBCU college tours offer a gateway to not just academic opportunities but also a deeper understanding of African American culture and history. As Rev. West from 32nd Street Theater says, “It's about pursuing happiness and broadening horizons.” Start your journey today and embrace the rich legacy of HBCUs.

Moscow Metro

The Moscow Metro Tour is included in most guided tours’ itineraries. Opened in 1935, under Stalin’s regime, the metro was not only meant to solve transport problems, but also was hailed as “a people’s palace”. Every station you will see during your Moscow metro tour looks like a palace room. There are bright paintings, mosaics, stained glass, bronze statues… Our Moscow metro tour includes the most impressive stations best architects and designers worked at - Ploshchad Revolutsii, Mayakovskaya, Komsomolskaya, Kievskaya, Novoslobodskaya and some others.

What is the kremlin in russia?

The guide will not only help you navigate the metro, but will also provide you with fascinating background tales for the images you see and a history of each station.

And there some stories to be told during the Moscow metro tour! The deepest station - Park Pobedy - is 84 metres under the ground with the world longest escalator of 140 meters. Parts of the so-called Metro-2, a secret strategic system of underground tunnels, was used for its construction.

During the Second World War the metro itself became a strategic asset: it was turned into the city's biggest bomb-shelter and one of the stations even became a library. 217 children were born here in 1941-1942! The metro is the most effective means of transport in the capital.

There are almost 200 stations 196 at the moment and trains run every 90 seconds! The guide of your Moscow metro tour can explain to you how to buy tickets and find your way if you plan to get around by yourself.

Industry representatives visited Bethune-Cookman University in Daytona Beach, Fla. last week and are visiting Texas Southern University in Houston on March 26 and Paul Quinn College in Dallas on April 9. Additional HBCUs will be identified for events later this Spring and during the Fall 2024 Semester. Fun facts from our Moscow Metro Tours:

From the very first days of its existence, the Moscow Metro was the object of civil defense, used as a bomb shelter, and designed as a defense for a possible attack on the Soviet Union.

At a depth of 50 to 120 meters lies the second, the coded system of Metro-2 of Moscow subway, which is equipped with everything you need, from food storage to the nuclear button.

According to some sources, the total length of Metro-2 reaches over 150 kilometers.

The Museum was opened on Sportivnaya metro station on November 6, 1967. It features the most interesting models of trains and stations.

Coffee Ring

The first scheme of Moscow Metro looked like a bunch of separate lines. Listen to a myth about Joseph Stalin and the main brown line of Moscow Metro.

Zodiac Metro

According to some astrologers, each of the 12 stops of the Moscow Ring Line corresponds to a particular sign of the zodiac and divides the city into astrological sector.

Astrologers believe that being in a particular zadiac sector of Moscow for a long time, you attract certain energy and events into your life.

Paleontological finds

Red marble walls of some of the Metro stations hide in themselves petrified inhabitants of ancient seas. Try and find some!

  • Every day each car in  Moscow metro passes  more than 600 km, which is the distance from Moscow to St. Petersburg.
  • Moscow subway system is the  5th in the intensity  of use (after the subways of Beijing, Tokyo, Seoul and Shanghai).
  • The interval in the movement of trains in rush hour is  90 seconds .

‘Urgency and Realness’: Inside the Human Rights Campaign’s Beyoncé-Inspired ‘Renaissance’ Syllabus

The new curriculum from the organization's HBCU Program breaks down the Grammy winner's 2022 album into a series of lessons focusing on Black queer history, self-empowerment and more.

Beyoncé

It may be Cowboy Carter week, but the silvery disco ball strobe lights of Renaissance — the first act of Beyoncé ’s presently unfolding trilogy — continue to illuminate the world. On Monday (March 26), the Human Rights Campaign debuted Renaissance: A Queer Syllabus , a sprawling collection of academic articles, essays, films and other pieces of media rooted in Black queer and feminist studies and directly inspired by each track on Queen Bey’s Billboard 200-topping dance album.

‘Are You Really Coming to Help Us?’: How the Beyoncé-Sponsored Equality Ball Prioritized Black…

Trending on billboard.

Released in the summer of 2022, Renaissance was and continues to be a bonafide cultural phenomenon. A lovingly researched ode to the Black queer roots of dance music filtered through her intensely personal relationship with her late Uncle Johnny, the album captivated fans around the world and shined a much-needed light on the unsung movers and shakers of Black queer art and culture. The album won four Grammys — including a historic win for best dance/electronic album — housed a pair of Billboard Hot 100 top 10 hits in “Break My Soul” (No. 1) and “Cuff It” (No. 6) and spawned a record-breaking stadium tour and accompanying box office-topping documentary concert film.

From the economic impact of Beyoncé’s silver fashion aesthetic to career boosts given to Black queer icons such as Kevin Aviance, Ts Madison and Honey Dijon, Renaissance proved itself to be much more than a standard LP. The HRC understood that there was a chance to make a real impact across education and activism through the lens of the record.

On May 15, 2023 — just three shows into the Renaissance World Tour — Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis signed a bill banning DEI initiatives in public colleges. A month later (June 14, 2023), the governor of Beyoncé’s home state of Texas, Greg Abbott, signed a bill prohibiting DEI offices and the hiring of DEI staff at public higher education institutions.

The juxtaposition of rising anti-queer sentiments and Beyoncé’s Renaissance era anchors the syllabus’ arrangement. The syllabus begins with a brief statement summarizing and reiterating the HRC’s June 2023 LGBTQ+ State of Emergency statement, which they declared “for the first time following an unprecedented and dangerous spike in anti-LGBTQ+ legislative assaults sweeping state houses.” The final pages of the syllabus contain both a reprint of Beyoncé’s statement in memory of O’Shea Sibley — a young Black queer man who was murdered in Brooklyn back in July 2023 for simply voguing to Renaissance -—and an additional statement from the HRC denouncing hate crimes.

Musicians Who’ve Spoken Out Against Recent Anti-LGBTQ Bills: Hayley Williams, Lizzo, Ariana Grande…

“I think when you preface something [with] a state of emergency, you get the lay of the land and how important [the] syllabus is,” said Calhoun, an HBCU program manager at HRC. “It brings a sense of urgency and realness to what’s actually happening to queer youth, especially black Queer Youth.”

Six themes anchor the syllabus, ranging from “intersectionality and inclusivity” to “social justice and activism.” Fan favorite tracks like “Alien Superstar” and “Thique” rope in the origins of the body positivity moment and iconic speeches from Barbara Ann Teer (including the one sampled on “Superstar”) under the umbrella of “empowerment and self-acceptance.” “Energy,” the song behind the infamous “mute challenge,” gets new readings by interloping essays from bell hooks and Patricia Hill Collins. Even less-famed tracks like “Move” (with Grace Jones & Tems) — which is paired with fascinating readings on the effects of colonialism on pre-colonial Africa and African perspectives on trans identity — get in on the scholarly fun.

Naturally, “Heated,” a song that had an intense, immediate impact on Renaissance listeners with deep ties to the ballroom scene, served as the crux of the syllabus, according to Calhoun. “It was the model child for how a section of the syllabus should look,” he explains. “There was so much to unpack in ‘Heated.’ You have Beyoncé’s Uncle Johnny, a Black gay man [living] during the AIDS epidemic — that lead to us [compiling different resources] about how we lost a generation of black gay men who were visionaries and people who paved the culture.”

The syllabus is a thorough resource, one that continues the HRC’s connection with Beyoncé’s Renaissance era. On Aug. 27, 2023, the HRC, with support from Beyoncé’s BeyGOOD Foundation, mounted the Equality Ball in Las Vegas, NV – an event that doubled as actual ball complete with a “Bring It Like Beyoncé” category and an educational resource pushing voter registration and sexual health awareness.

From Pauli Murray and C. Riley Snorton to Audre Lorde and Sonya Renee Taylor, HRC’s new syllabus continues Renaissance’ s mission of highlighting, amplifying and re-centering Black and queer voices. Of course, this syllabus is far from the first piece of Beyoncé-inspired coursework in higher education. Following the release of the Grammy winner’s culture-shifting album Lemonade in 2016, a slew of Beyoncé-themed classes debuted across higher education institutions — including the University of Copenhagen, Rutgers University, Arizona State University and the University of Texas at San Antonio.

For Hall, the rise of courses tackling social constructs through the lens of pop culture is only a good thing. “We’re in a powder keg right now, and it’s gonna pop around election time,” he says. “We have to get information to folks in younger generations. We need them to be connected to what’s really happening and a way to do that is through music and culture.”

Nonetheless, Hall and his colleagues aren’t oblivious to the fact that Renaissance exists in an intrinsically capitalistic context. “[It’s] something I grapple with so much,” notes Calhoun. “I had a teacher who once said that capitalism is the current structure and we have to live under it. This is how life operates. What is Beyoncé going to do to stop a capitalist structure? I just don’t feel like we’re at a point in the movement where we know what we want [people like her] to do.”

While there may be no current plans for a Cowboy Carter syllabus — “being from the Mississippi Delta, that would be dope, but it depends on Beyoncé,” quipped Calhoun — the HRC’s Renaissance syllabus is the ultimate proof that the Renaissance is, in fact, not over.

What to Know

Cincinnati has enjoyed a two-game homestand but will soon have to dust off their road jerseys. They and the Indiana State Sycamores are set to clash at 9:00 p.m. ET on Tuesday at Hulman Center in a Big 12 postseason contest. The stakes are high as both teams are all in, both fighting to extend their postseason success.

Cincinnati earned some postseason bragging rights after a successful outing on Saturday. They enjoyed a cozy 74-57 victory over Bradley.

Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead Cincinnati to victory, but perhaps none more so than Jizzle James, who scored 25 points. It was the first time this season that James scored 20 or more points. Dan Skillings Jr. was another key contributor, scoring 20 points along with five rebounds.

Meanwhile, Indiana State and Minnesota couldn't quite live up to the 163.5-over/under that the experts had forecasted. Indiana State came out on top against Minnesota by a score of 76-64 on Sunday. The win made it back-to-back wins for the Sycamores.

Indiana State's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Ryan Conwell led the charge by going 6 for 8 from beyond the arc en route to 23 points and 5 assists. Another player making a difference was Jayson Kent, who dropped a double-double on 16 points and 11 rebounds.

Cincinnati's win was their fourth straight at home, which pushed their record up to 22-14. Those good results were due in large part to their offensive dominance across that stretch, as they averaged 78.3 points per game. As for Indiana State, they are on a roll lately: they've won eight of their last nine contests, which provided a nice bump to their 30-6 record this season.

Cincinnati is hoping to beat the odds on Tuesday, as the experts think they're headed for a loss. For those looking to play the spread, take note: they are a solid 7-2 against the spread when playing as the underdog.

While fans of Cincinnati and Indiana State were happy after their last outing, their bettors probably weren't as neither team covered. As for their next game, Indiana State is the favorite in this one, as the experts expect to see them win by 3.5 points. For those looking to play the spread, take note: they are a solid 16-9 against the spread when expected to win.

Indiana State is a 3.5-point favorite against Cincinnati, according to the latest college basketball odds .

The oddsmakers had a good feel for the line for this one, as the game opened with the Sycamores as a 2.5-point favorite.

The over/under is 154.5 points.

Swing into success: Make Golf Your Thing kickstarts 2024 HBCU partnership tour

Industry representatives travel to several HBCUs to build awareness, build relationships and expand access to careers in golf with students and administration

PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. – Make Golf Your Thing, a collaborative industry movement, is continuing to build relationships and foster greater access and inclusivity in the sport through events at historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs). Under the banner “Make Golf Your Career,” several golf industry talent recruiting representatives will be on-site at HBCUs in the coming weeks to directly engage students in discussions about working in the $102B golf industry.

Industry representatives visited Bethune-Cookman University in Daytona Beach, Florida, last week and are visiting Texas Southern University in Houston on March 26 and Paul Quinn College in Dallas on April 9. Additional HBCUs will be identified for events later this spring and during the fall 2024 semester. The events include meetings between golf industry representatives and university leaders, as well as an activation for students, inviting them to come and learn more about internships and careers in the golf industry.

Make Golf Your Thing industry movement works to accelerate golf’s evolution in welcoming more people from historically underrepresented backgrounds to the industry, shedding light on the extensive opportunities the industry provides across the United States. In 2023, Make Golf Your Thing supported a career day at Alabama State University in Montgomery, Alabama, and partnered with four additional universities to install golf simulators on campus as a way to stimulate interest in golf. The effort is part of the White House Initiative on HBCUs.

“We are grateful that the HBCU leaders are welcoming the golf industry to their campuses and inviting us to meet the students as we aim to strengthen our industry through greater diversity,” said Dr. Michael Cooper, the USGA’s senior HBCU initiative advisor and a co-chair of Make Golf Your Career’s HBCU effort. “We hope the relationships and inroads we are forging to the very capable talent that exists at HBCUs will create opportunities for students as well as the golf industry.”
