Andaman Itinerary For 6 Days
- April 24, 2022
The far-flung archipelago of Andaman & Nicobar Islands consists of 572 islands, out of which only 37 are inhabited. The islands of Nicobar are off-limits to tourists, and we can only visit a few islands in Andaman. Located in the Bay of Bengal off the eastern coast of India , the Andaman Islands are a sight to behold. Sun-kissed beaches, azure waters, exhilarating water activities, intriguing history, and abundant natural beauty are just a few of the reasons to visit this tropical paradise. Additional attractions include spectacular sunsets, limestone caves, mangrove rainforests, and abundant marine life. In fact, it is an excellent destination for scuba divers and snorkelers as it is home to a plethora of vibrant coral and exotic marine life. This itinerary will take you through the most inhabited and exciting areas of the Andaman Islands.
Suggested Andaman Itinerary for 6 Days
Day 1 of andaman itinerary: port blair.
The only way to get to the remote islands is to fly into Port Blair. Direct flights are available from Delhi , Kolkata, Mumbai , and Chennai to Veer Sarvankar International Airport in Port Blair. Check the flights and connectivity before planning your vacation, as the timetable changes randomly. In Port Blair, there isn’t much to do. However, Cellular jail should be on your agenda. The Cellular Jail, also known as Kala Pani, was a colonial prison that housed several prominent Indian freedom fighters. The horrifying stories of brutality and depravity are sure to have a sobering effect. There is also a light and sound show in the evening (6 pm-7 pm). If you have time left, you can go to the coconut palm-fringed Corbyn Beach and watch a scenic sunset. Enjoy a leisurely meal and spend the night in Port Blair.
Day 2 of Andaman Itinerary: Havelock and Radhanagar Beach
To get to Havelock (Swaraj Deep Island), you can use a seaplane, a government-operated ferry, or a private ferry. Choose Markuzz Ferries for your ferry transfer since they are spacious and comfortable Catamarans. They offer air conditioning, nice seats, clean restrooms, and a small snack bar. The trip will take about 1.5 hours and will cost close to Rs1400 ($20) one way. If you can’t get tickets in Markuzz, you’ll have to use Green Ocean Ferries, Aashi, Sea Link, or government-operated boats, which are cheaper but have subpar facilities and may take longer.
During this trip, we plan to spend as much time as possible on Havelock Island, which is noted for its clean beaches , lush green forests, and rich underwater treasure. Take the morning ferry (departs from Haddo Jetty) to Havelock and get off at Swaraj Deep Jetty. To get to your hotel, you’ll need to take a taxi/auto from there. Check into your hotel and spend the rest of the day at Radhanagar Beach. The secluded beach is located on the western coast of Havelock Island. The Radhanagar Beach (Beach 7) is ranked among Asia’s top ten most gorgeous beaches, and you’ll see why when you visit. The crescent-shaped beach spans 2 kilometers and has an average width of 30 to 40 meters. Velvety sand, excellent waves, emerald waters, picturesque sunset, and scarce crowds make this beach a perfect place to relax and enjoy. There are no water sports on the beach. Taj Exotica Resort & Spa is a 1-minute walk from the famed beach. If you can afford the upscale resort, go for it.
Day 3 of Andaman Itinerary: Elephant Beach, Havelock
Today we are going to visit Elephant Beach. A small cruise boat will take you to Elephant Beach from the Swaraj Deep Jetty in less than 30 minutes. The round-trip ferry would cost Rs1000 ($14) per person. It leaves you there for three hours, and you are free to do whatever you choose during that time. The same jetty will bring you back after the allotted time. Another way to reach Elephant Beach is by trekking. The trail begins at the Forest Camp, which is located 8 kilometers from the jetty. Because the trail runs through dense rainforests, it is recommended that you bring an escort with you on the one-hour trek. You can get a guide for 500 rupees (USD 8). The guide will accompany you to Elephant Beach, assist you while you are there, and bring you back to the Forest Camp. Keep in mind that if you go trekking, you must return the same way you came. You will not be able to go back on the ferry.
Havelock’s Elephant Beach is a great place to go snorkeling. The crystal-clear water, rich coral reef formations, and amazing marine life near the coast provide for an unforgettable snorkeling experience. You’re going to have the time of your life if you love water activities. There’s Jet skiing, banana boats, an underwater sea walk, parasailing, and a slew of other water activities. Except for snorkeling (Rs1500) and parasailing (Rs3250), most of the activities cost Rs600. Elephant Beach is quite crowded and extensively commercialized. If you are not interested in water sports, you can skip going there and spend the day at other beaches such as Beach 2, 3, and 7. The last boat leaves Elephant Beach by 3 p.m. The rest of the day is free to do whatever you choose. If you’re in the mood to venture out again, Beach 2 and 3 have some nice restaurants and beach shacks.
PS: If you want to do scuba diving in Havelock, arrange a morning excursion so you can return in time to explore Elephant Beach. Scuba diving will take around two hours to complete. The diving establishments are located at Govindnagar Beach No. 2, which is quite close to the Jetty. Remember that the last ferry to Elephant Beach departs from the jetty at noon and make your plans accordingly. You’ll have a long day ahead of you, but scuba diving in Havelock is highly recommended.
Day 4 of Andaman Itinerary: Neil Island
Today we are going to leave for Neil Island (Shaheed Dweep). The Markuzz ferry from Havelock Jetty to Neil Island Jetty leaves at 10 a.m. and takes one hour. Neil Island is smaller than Havelock and has laid-back vibes. The island was inhabited only in the 1960s and has been slowly rising on the popularity charts due to its unexplored coral reefs, picturesque beaches, amazing biodiversity, and lush forests. There are three main beaches in Neil Islands – Sitapur Beach, Bharatpur Beach, and Laxmanpur Beach. Nestled between tropical forests and clear turquoise seas, the beaches look spectacular. Each one of them has its charm.
The sea around Bharatpur Beach is full of corals and schools of fish. It is the only place in the Neil Islands where you can enjoy water sports. However, snorkeling and scuba diving can be enjoyed on all three beaches. Sitapur Beach is also called “Sunrise Beach” as it offers spectacular sunrise views in the morning. The beach is known for its limestone formations. Laxmanpur Beach is a broad spur of white shell sand and you can find an abundance of corals and shells in the shallow, clear waters. The Natural Bridge, also called Howrah Bridge by the locals, is the highlight of Laxmanpur Beach. The bridge is made of natural rock formations. Most of the resorts on Neil Island are located on Bharatpur Beach. Stay overnight on Neil Island.
PS: You can go to Kalapathar Beach early in the morning before leaving for Neil Island to see a breathtaking sunrise. The beach is located on the southern side of Havelock and is approximately 6.5 kilometers from the jetty. It is easily accessible by car, taxi, or bike.
Day 5 of Andaman Itinerary: Port Blair and Ross Island
It is now time to return to Port Blair. The Markuzz Ferry, which runs from Neil to Port Blair, departs at 11:30 a.m. and takes one hour. On reaching Port Blair, we are going to visit Ross Island. The tiny island is only a kilometer from Port Blair and is easily accessible through a 15-minute boat ride from the Aberdeen jetty. The island closes at 3 p.m. for day visitors, so plan. You can still visit the island if you don’t get there in time for the last boat. Ferries depart at 4 p.m. for the light and sound display, which begins at 5:30 p.m. Tickets must be purchased three days in advance. Ross Island is closed on Wednesdays.
For nearly a century, Ross Island served as the administrative headquarters for the Indian Penal Settlement. It had all the modern comforts procured by the Britishers until an earthquake struck the island in 1942. The ruins of a church, a bakery, a museum, a jail, a cemetery, and several other structures are scattered all over the island. Ross Island (recently named Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Island) exudes a rustic and one-of-a-kind charm. What impresses you the most is the myriad flora and fauna that can be found on the serene island. It is home to deer, peacocks, and a variety of other birds. The trees have reclaimed the island and wrapped their roots around the crumbling ruins, creating an eerie and intriguing sight. There are no cars allowed on the island, but you can explore the island in a golf cart if you don’t want to walk. Return to Port Blair for dinner and a night’s stay.
Day 6 of Andaman Itinerary: Fly Back
The flight to your next destination would most likely depart in the morning. Pack your belongings and head to the airport. It’s time to say goodbye to the Andamans.
PS: If you have an extra day, you can plan a visit to Baratang Island. However, be prepared for a long and exhausting day. I felt that it was not worth going to Baratang Island.
Things to know before visiting Andamans
- The best time to visit Andamans is between November and March. The months of April and May can be quite warm, particularly in the afternoons. The weather begins to heat up and become humid in the following months. Monsoon is from June to September , so avoiding that season is better. March to June – 22°C to 33°C, June to September – 27°C to 30°C, October to Feb – 20°C to 30°C
- Although the islands are in the same time zone as Bangkok, they follow Indian Standard Time. As a result, the day begins very early. Go to bed on time so that you can wake up early to make the most of the light.
- Ferries must be reserved in advance because they are the sole way to travel between islands. All your carefully laid-out plans will go haywire if you can’t find a suitable ferry.
- Only private ferries can be booked online and in advance. Government ferry tickets can only be purchased at the counter two days before the trip.
- Boarding closes approximately 20 minutes before departure. Before that, you have to get your luggage scanned and your tickets verified.
- Bring sunscreen, sunglasses, caps, an umbrella, flip-flops, a swimsuit, cover-ups, and mosquito repellent with you.
- The locals are straightforward, honest, and trustworthy.
- Getting vegetarian food is not a problem in Andamans.
- The mobile network is extremely patchy, with no connectivity on smaller islands. For a stable connection, you need to rely on the hotel’s WIFI. The WIFI is sometimes only accessible in the hotel’s lobby.
- Big hotels accept cards, but you’ll need cash for cabs, small eateries, tickets, and a variety of other small transactions. Payments with Digital Wallets are also accepted in many places.
- Although there is no Uber or Ola in the Andamans, taxis are easily available. They usually have a set fare for each route and don’t bargain much. You will be offered package deals by most of the taxi drivers you come across.
- Auto rickshaws are easily accessible on all Andaman Islands. Because the distances are short, it makes sense to choose this less expensive method of transportation.
- Most beaches close at 5 p.m., and this is strictly enforced by the lifeguards patrolling the beaches.
- If you are daring enough to kayak through the mangroves at night in Havelock, you will be able to view the bioluminescent plankton that makes the water shimmer every time the paddle dips in the water. The waters are said to be home to a few crocodiles, so go at your own risk.
- Foreign visitors to the Andaman Islands are no longer required to get a “Restricted Area Permit” as of July 2018. Foreign visitors with a valid Indian tourist visa can now visit the Andaman Islands and stay for the duration of their visa.
- Onge, Jarawa, Sentinelese, and Andamanese are the four tribes that live on Andaman. They can be fiercely hostile. Do not make interaction with tribals. It is strictly prohibited by the Indian government and is a punishable offense. This is the most effective way to cut off them from the modern world and allow them to carry on with their age-old traditions.

Step 4 - Get your flight tickets
Flight tickets to the Andaman Islands can get really expensive based on your date of travel. The airport where you land at Port Blair is called Veer Savarkar International Airport and the code is IXZ
Direct flights are available from Chennai, Kolkata, Bangalore, and Hyderabad. Connecting flights are available from all cities with intermittent direct flights from Mumbai and Delhi as well.
When you plan your budget for Andaman the flight costs are a great deal. If you get cheaper quotes for flights then your overall package cost goes down.
Approx cost of flight per person from major cities
Chennai (MAA) to Port Blair (IXZ) - Direct Flights - One Way - 6000 - 9000 Rupees per person
Kolkata (CCU) to Port Blair (IXZ) - Direct Flights - One Way - 6000 - 9000 Rupees per person
Bangalore (BLR) to Port Blair (IXZ) - Direct Flights / 1 Stop - One Way - 8000 - 12000 Rupees per person
Hyderabad (HYD) to Port Blair (IXZ) - Direct Flights / 1 Stop - One Way - 8000 - 12000 Rupees per person
Delhi (DEL) to Port Blair (IXZ) - Direct Flights / 1 Stop - One Way - 10000 - 16000 Rupees per person
Mumbai (BOM) to Port Blair (IXZ) - Direct Flights / 1 Stop - One Way - 10000 - 16000 Rupees per person
If you see the price flight varies a lot based on the season and your date of travel. The price can sometimes go very high to reach the Andaman Islands specifically from the North part of India. You can connect with the Experience Andamans team to get group flight prices from the below-mentioned cities and as per availability we will share with you the series airfare.
The cities that we have best price to Port Blair are Chennai Kolkata Bangalore
Step 4 - Cost of Accommodation
Now once you know the cost of a Flight from your city, the next is to add the price of accommodation at all the islands that you are planning to stay in the islands as per your itinerary.
The accommodation has to be booked at Port Blair, Havelock and Neil Island
At Port Blair, the cost of the stay is comparatively cheaper than that of Havelock and Neil Island
Budget accommodation - Less than 1500 Rupees per night on double-sharing basis 2 Star Properties - 2500 Rupees per night on double sharing basis 3 Star Properties - 3500 - 4500 Rupee per night on double sharing basis 4 Star Properties - 5000 - 9000 Rupees per night on double sharing basis 5 Star Properties - 8000 - 15000 Rupees per night on double sharing basis
At Havelock Island Budget accommodation - Less than 1500 Rupees per night on double-sharing basis 2 Star Properties - 3000 Rupees per night on double sharing basis 3 Star Properties - 4500 - 5500 Rupee per night on double sharing basis 4 Star Properties - 5000 - 18000 Rupees per night on double sharing basis 5 Star Properties - 20000 - 40000 Rupees per night on double sharing basis
Likewise at Neil Island.
The major cost of your trip to Andaman Islands will be
Flight Cost + Accommodation Cost - These two costs will cover around 70% of your total package cost in Andaman Islands
Let's take an example to get an approximate cost so far for your trip to Andaman Islands
Consider 2 Adults are traveling from Chennai and are visiting Andaman Islands for 5 days with 2 Nights in Port Blair and 2 Nights at Havelock Island
Flight ticket cost = 8000 x 2 x 2 (return airfare) = 32000 Accommodation Cost in 3 Star hotels Port Blair = 3500 x 2 = 7000 Havelock = 4500 x 2 = 9000
The total cost of accommodation with Breakfast = 16000
Total cost for your trip so far = 32000 For Flights + 16000 For Accomodation = 48000
Now we need to consider the cost of Ferry, Transport, Activities and Food which we will cover below
Step 5 - Cost of Ferry to move from one Island to the other
Ferry in Andaman Islands is very important again. Basically you will be landing at Port Blair airport and to go to other islands such as Havelock and Neil Island you will need a ferry that takes you from one island to the other and brings to you back. These ferries are of prime importance in your trip planning. If you select an island to book where the ferry is not on a regular basis then you will end up paying more or you can even end not reaching the islands because of no ferry operational.
The major ferries that operate in Andaman Islands are :
Government ferry - No online booking only counter booking allowed Makruzz Nautika ITT Majestic Green Ocean
Except for the Government ferry, all other ferries can be booked online. Check the ferry booking details on our website that can be booked online
So the ferry charges approximately 1500 Per Person for each side. Therefore for 2 adults as per our previous itinerary, we will need a ferry from Port Blair to Havelock Island and return from Havelock to Port Blair Ferry cost = 1500 x 2 x 2 side = 6000
Total trip cost = Flight + Hotel + Ferry = 32000 (Flight) + 16000 (Stay) + 6000 (Ferry) = 54000 Per Couple for 4 Night 5 Days trip with 2 Nights in Port Blair and 2 Nights at Havelock Island
Next we need to discuss about the other cost such as transportation, activities and sightseeing.
Step 6 - Cost of water activities
Once you are sorted with your flight, hotels and ferry then comes the next part of your trip planning is the cost of water activities in the Andaman islands . The major activities that is done in Havelock Island island are as below :
Scuba Diving costs Rupees 3500 Per Person Sea Walking cost Rupees 3500 Per Person Jet Ski ride cost Rupees 700 Per Person Semi Submarine cost Rupees 2100 Per Person Likewise many activities are available at different islands, please check the detailed list of all the water activities in Andaman on our website.
So as per our previous itinerary plan suppose we want to add Scuba Diving for 2 people then the package cost will add up 7000. After adding the activity the package cost will be
Total trip cost = Flight + Hotel + Ferry + Scuba Diving for 2 Persons = 32000 (Flight) + 16000 (Stay) + 6000 (Ferry) + 7000 (Scuba Diving) = 61000 Per Couple for 4 Night 5 Days trip with 2 Nights in Port Blair and 2 Nights at Havelock Island Many travelers add 2 - 3 different activities in Andaman and as per the price the budget of your trip increases.
Step 7 - Cost of transportation as per your itinerary
In this section, we will specifically discuss about the package cost for 4 Night and 5 days. So far we have came down to the below cost
Total trip cost = Flight + Hotel + Ferry + Scuba Diving for 2 Persons = 32000 (Flight) + 16000 (Stay) + 6000 (Ferry) + 7000 (Scuba Diving) = 61000 Per Couple for 4 Night 5 Days trip with 2 Nights in Port Blair and 2 Nights at Havelock Island Let us consider the itinerary as below :
Day 1 - Airport Pickup. Then visit to Corbyns Cove Beach and Cellular Jail - Overnight at Port Blair Day. 2 - Travel from Port Blair to Havelock in a ferry and visit Radhanagar Beach - Overnight at Havelock Island Day 3 - Visit Elephant Beach Day 4 - Scuba Diving at Havelock Island and Return to Port Blair Day 5 - Departure
The cab cost for the above pickup and drop will come approximately to 7000 Rupees for all pickup and drops. If you are taking a 2 wheeler at Havelock Island then the cost only for Port Blair pickup and drop will come to Rupees 4000 and for 2 days two-wheeler will cost you 500 Per day rental with petrol extra. So lets consider 1500 including rental and the petrol.
So overall in transportation, you will be spending approx 6000 Rupees In the above cost entry ticket to Cellular Jail, Light and Sound Show and ferry ticket to Elephant beach are not considered. These tickets for couple will cost around 3000 Per Couple So the revised budget now becomes
Total trip cost = Flight + Hotel + Ferry + Scuba Diving for 2 Persons + Transportation + Entry tickets = 32000 (Flight) + 16000 (Stay) + 6000 (Ferry) + 7000 (Scuba Diving) + 6000 (Transportation) + 3000 (Entry Tickets) = 70000 Per Couple for 4 Night 5 Days trip with 2 Nights in Port Blair and 2 Nights at Havelock Island
With this we have now come to an approximate cost for your trip to Andaman Islands including flight, hotels, ferry, activity and transport. The last leg is the food cost which will bring you to the overall cost
Step 8 - Food Cost
The final part of your cost comes from your food and personal expenses. Let's consider the average meal cost per person is 500. Therefore for 4 days, you will be having 8 meals in total including lunch and dinner
Approx cost of food equals 500 per meal x 2 person x 4 days x 2 (lunch and dinner) = 8000. Let's keep an upper side for food to be around 10k considering evening snacks etc
Total Final trip cost = Flight + Hotel + Ferry + Scuba Diving for 2 Persons + Transportation + Entry tickets + Food = 32000 (Flight) + 16000 (Stay) + 6000 (Ferry) + 7000 (Scuba Diving) + 6000 (Transportation) + 3000 (Entry Tickets) + 10000 (Food) = 80000 Per Couple for 4 Night 5 Days trip with 2 Nights in Port Blair and 2 Nights at Havelock Island
Therefore we can say that an approximate cost of 80000 will be spent on your 5 days trip to Andaman Islands. The key to planning your trip is to get the lowest deals on flight and hotels. If you get it cheaper then you save a lot more during your trip.

This place offers spectacular photo ops - a boat hooked to a bench, a tire hung to a tree! This beach has some of the best restaurants of Havelock Islands located close by - Fat Martin, Venom Bar are some good options to explore.
Day 7 - Neil Islands
Make sure to book your ferry ticket from Havelock to Neil islands at least 2 days in advance. Private ferry tickets can be booked online (make sure you book these prior to booking your hotel). Govt. ferry tickets are cheaper and have to be booked at least 2 days in advance from the ticket station. Ferry rides are limited and the demand is huge! You won’t believe it, we ended up thinking 7 days are not enough and we will be planning to cover those off-beat destinations in our next trip.
Suggested Read: Before planning a vacation to Andaman and Nicobar Islands, here’s an ultimate guide for you to know an overview of the Island (Pros and Cons, Do’s and Don’ts), travel and packing tips, visa, how to get there, the best time to visit, food and accommodation, etc.
List of good hotels in Andaman and Nicobar Islands
Table of Contents
Best of Andaman itinerary for 7 days as follows:
Day 1: Arrival in Port Blair & visit Cellular Jail
Port Blair is the capital city & entry point to Andaman and Nicobar Islands, reached by Air or Sea, from where you will get several options to explore the entire island. We preferred to fly down at Veer Savarkar International Airport, Port Blair, located just outside the city.
You will be fascinated by seeing the first glimpse of islands from the flight just before the landing, so keep your mobile ready to click pictures. The airport is small and basic, easy to get outside and find a taxi or auto.
We always try to reach the destination in the morning or till afternoon, so that we can get the rest of the day to venture out after checking in the hotel and freshen up. Go easy on your first day, try to figure out the places around your hotel, find some good restaurants to eat, explore local markets and transportation services, or you can pick up a rental bike/car to roam around.
We stayed in The J Hotel , located in the city center, near Aberdeen bazaar from where all the attractions are in proximity.
Later in the afternoon slot, visited Cellular Jail (1.2 km– 3 min drive from J hotel), also known as ‘Kalapani’, a former colonial prison during the British rule, now a memorial turned museum, illustrates inhuman and unimaginable tortures, struggles of freedom fighters for India’s independence.
You will get a chance to explore this historical national monument on your own at your own pace and dig into the brutal history.
In the evening, attend the Light and Sound show at the same place, where the heroic saga of the Indian freedom struggle is brought alive. It gives you goosebumps.
- Entry fees for the museum, light & sound show are separate, not much, and worth spending for.
- Autos and taxis are readily available as a commute with reasonable charges.
Day 2: Scuba diving at North Bay Island, visit Ross Island
To boost up the vacation, we chose to start our day 2 with Scuba diving. After finishing breakfast, we rushed to Andaman Water Sports Complex to hire a speed boat to North Bay Island, where you can enjoy all kinds of thrilling water sports.
We both are non-swimmers, and the fact is Saurabh has an underwater phobia, but we both did it with absolute ease and fun.
Scuba diving services are available on Havelock Island as well. If Scuba diving is not your cup of tea and find it more difficult, then you can try other water sports too like – sea walking (It is comparatively easy but equally exciting), snorkeling, glass-bottom boat riding, jet skiing, banana boat & speed boat rides.
Just choose your sport by how much thrill can you handle and of course bearing in mind the age factor.
Alternate plan- If you are not interested in any of the water sports, then instead of going to North Bay Island, enjoy your morning on Corbyn’s Cove beach till the afternoon.
After returning to the water sports complex take another boat or maybe the same boat from North Bay Island will take you directly to Ross Island (recently named as Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Dweep), where you can spend 2-3 hours.
Take a walk through Ross Island (Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Dweep) is another historical place, once occupied by the Japanese from 1942 to 1945, who was helping Mr. Subhash Chandra Bose to fight against the British empire.
You will find their imprints here, now a historical tourist attraction; consists of remains of Japanese bunkers & colonies naturally sheltered by roots and branches of the trees, creating photogenic spots!
This island has beautiful surroundings of palm and coconut trees and is home to various species of birds, Spotted Deer, Hens, and Peacocks.
They also conducted a Light and Sound Show in the evening, but we skipped the show and returned to Water Sports Complex & spent some time there, clicking pictures at the Tsunami Memorial and Rajiv Gandhi Statue.
- Please carry your lunch pack, and drinking water with you while exploring North Bay Island & Ross Island.
- Please carry changing clothes, if you are performing water sports. The clothes-changing facilities are available at North Bay Island.
- North Bay Island & Ross Island are closed on Wednesday.
Day 3: Journey to Havelock Island, visit Radha Nagar Beach
After spending an audacious day, it is now time to rejuvenate from head to toe, and there is no better place than Havelock Island for relaxation. It was recently named as Swaraj Dweep.
On Day 3, we woke up early, checked out from our hotel, and proceeded to Phoenix Bay Jetty (1.5 km- 4 min drive from J Hotel) to board the early morning (8.15 AM) Makruzz ferry (Privately owned, luxury, air-conditioned, high-speed catamaran) to the Havelock Islands. It was a 1.5-hour cruise ride to enjoy the seascapes.
Want to know about our experience with Makruzz Ferry?
You can opt for a government ferry that will take a little longer and is cheaper than the private catamaran, but the main drawback is that online bookings are not allowed & tickets can be bought only at the counter two days before the departure, which we found little risky if already booked.
Havelock Island is the most visited and popular, must-see destination, home to exotic-looking beaches, and outstanding coral reefs with fascinating marine life that excites snorkelers & divers. Do you know that a larger part of the island is a dense rainforest offering ample opportunity for bird watching & hiking?
On arrival to Havelock Island, you will fall in love at first sight with the mesmerizing beauty of the island, emerald-colored water with white sand & greenery on the backdrop, rustic, not so fancy looking yet so charming!
The pace of life is slow, the locals are friendly and the facilities are moderately basic. You will observe local businesses, tour offices, ticket counters for Elephant Beach, ferry service offices, restaurants, and bike rentals right there at the Havelock ferry terminal, so you don’t need to worry about searching for anything.
You can pick up a rental bike or take an auto/tuk-tuk to your hotel. Bike rentals can also be arranged by your respective hotel/resort on your demand.
After settling in our cozy, eco-friendly Nicobari-style villa at Silver Spring Resort located at Shyam Nagar No. 4, on a hilltop overlooking lush green trees, from where Radha Nagar Beach (Asia’s best & world’s most beautiful beach) is just 7 Km away, so if you don’t mind staying away from beach crowd & expensive hotels, this indeed good deal within the budget!
Read our staycation experience of Silver Spring Resort and the list of good hotels in Andaman and Nicobar Islands
We were so excited to see Radha Nagar Beach and without having lunch we made our first visit to this awesome place. Outside the beach, you’ll find many local shops selling fresh local fruits, and coconut water, renting snorkels and fins, some of them selling bamboo hats, sarongs, fish-bone arts, ornaments made from pearls and seashells, real conch shells, coconut handicrafts, etc. We bought one big conch seashell as a souvenir of the Andaman trip & attractive pearl shell earrings and bracelets for gifting purposes.
We were already starving, and our hunger intensified by the aroma coming out from a local, not-so-fancy-looking eatery, where we fulfilled our appetite by having authentic super delicious fish fry varieties.
Here’s a quick tip, eat like a local, if you want to taste authentic dishes, never go to big fancy restaurants on the islands, you’ll end up spending extra for a regular taste.
Radha Nagar Beach is the main attraction in Havelock Island and became popular worldwide in 2004, voted as one of Asia’s Best Beaches by Time Magazine, it’s a pride of Andaman and Nicobar Islands and surely a must-see place.
A long stretch of white sandy beach, ocean green water, surrounded by thick mangrove forest, and cleanliness make it even more beautiful and appealing for swimming. However, you might be disappointed because it is a very crowded place.
This beach has changing rooms, luggage counters, lockers, and toilets for visitor’s use. Spending an evening here and watching a gorgeous sunset will certainly be one of your biggest highlights from the trip.
Normally after sunset, everybody returns to their respective places/hotels before it’s dark. Be careful not to miss the last jeep/auto/tuk-tuk back if you’re not staying nearby. We concluded the day with a dinner in our hotel’s in-house restaurant, which was average in taste.
Note that –
- While purchasing any Conch shell, please make sure its corners/edges are not sharp, to be cut down before purchase, or else the airport authority will not permit entry on the plane, also do not forget to take receipt of purchase from the shopkeeper and keep it handy during luggage screening in the airport.
- Please carry extra clothes if you are interested in swimming in Radha Nagar Beach, changing rooms & lockers are available for rent.
- After the evening, do not stay on any beaches and sometimes not permitted by the beach authorities unless any activities are made by the respective resorts near the beach in Havelock Island.
- Makruzz ferry does not operate from April to September & all guests traveling to Havelock are required to carry ID proofs in order to issue their ticket back from Havelock – Port Blair.
Day 4: Excursion to Elephant Beach, Snorkeling, Evening at Govind Nagar
On the second day in Havelock Island, we decided to go to Elephant Beach as the weather was pleasant, clear skies, absolutely perfect for snorkeling.
The complimentary breakfast from the hotel was so delicious with many varieties, potato curry with puri (Indian fried thin sliced round bread), toasted bread with jam and butter served with hot tea and our favorite hot South-Indian delicacies were so yummy and fulfilling for the day.
We got ready and left the hotel by 8 AM, came to the same spot at the Havelock ferry terminal to board a speed boat. The 25-minute boat ride to the Elephant Beach was a pleasure to your eyes full of panoramic views and the first sight of Elephant Beach was outstanding.
It is an isolated beach that offers snorkelers calm, pristine shallow water with light blue color, amazing colorful coral reefs probably the best on the Island, starts remarkably close to the shore at a depth of about one meter with plenty of marine life, is simply the perfect spot for beginner snorkelers.
If you are an experienced snorkeler, then just slip on your gear and start snorkeling in shallow water spots. Non-swimmers like us can experience it through dive shops with the help of instructors; many resorts arrange snorkeling and diving trips here.
The price ranges around 1000-1500 INR per person (provided with snorkeling gear), which we think is worth the experience and is less risky than scuba diving. Any age group of people can perform snorkeling with ease, it is just that you are floating on the surface and the instructor is right there with you.
It is reachable on foot from Radha Nagar Beach # 7. This place is great to spend the day lying on the beach, sunbathing, and relaxing, offers incredible picture-perfect scenes with fallen trees and white sand, giving the opportunities for photographers to try some interesting shots using fallen tree branches as a property.
Later in past afternoon we came back and explored the junction Govind Nagar (Beach #3), the main ‘town’ is small and has a handful of shops and local dhabas (Eateries), we had dinner in one of the dhabas, tried some exciting varieties of seafood and the day concluded.
- Excursion to Elephant Beach is dependent on weather conditions, so keep your alternate plan ready, if this has been canceled.
- You can carry an extra pair of clothes for snorkeling, there are changing rooms available.
- It is advisable to pack your food and water if you are planning to stay for a longer time at Elephant Beach. There are limited or I would say no options to drink and eat.
Day 5: Leisure day, beach hopping & roaming around the Havelock Island
This day is devoted to your likings and preferences, ask yourself what your heart wants to do, and just go with the flow, and enjoy your freedom, the entire island is waiting outside for you.
We wanted to explore the island with no plan, no schedule, and no restrictions, just wanted to wander around the island on the bike.
So, it was a peaceful morning for us, we started slow, enjoyed our morning breakfast sitting on our private balcony, breathing in the fresh air, hearing gusts and leaves listening to chirping birds, roaming around our villa, exploring our resort, clicking some pictures and videos.
Later, we rented a motorbike (Honda Activa) for INR 400/day from our hotel and hit the road. It was a beautiful sunny day, roads were mostly empty and protected by big trees on both sides, playing hide and seek with the sun, you’ll observe old-fashioned wooden houses, Nicobari huts surrounded by arrays of betel nut trees, palm trees, coconut trees, and other tropical rain forest sited all around.
You will just fall in love with the slow & relaxed vibes of the town, which we often miss in our urban city lives.
Kala Pathar Beach gets its name from Kala Pathar village and also due to the Black Rocks that enhance the coastline.
We loved spending relaxing time here, it has some virgin spots, and you will feel like you are on some private unspoiled beach where you can lie down, chill on hammocks, go swimming, collect shells, and corals & decorate your sandcastle.
It’s a perfect place for newly married couples who seek privacy and a lone blissful WE time.
If you haven’t performed scuba diving in Port Blair, then you have a chance to experience it here in Havelock Island & instead of beach hopping, you may go for Scuba from one of the certified dive centers (Barefoot, Dive India, etc.)
Those who love adventures like trekking in the rainforest jungle or some of you may be interested in fishing trips, which can be organized by Wild Orchid Resort , Barefoot , Emerald Gecko Resort , etc. Just enjoy your day as per your choices at your own pace!
For lunch and dinner, you can try several options from budgeted restaurants in the Govind Nagar area to mid-range restaurants like Emerald Gecko to expensive and better-quality restaurants like Red Snapper at Wild Orchid Resort, where they served cocktails & alcohol, seafood platters from fresh fish selections, right from Tuna Steak, Lobsters, Tiger Prawns all are freshly available. The food and the ambiance are amazing, it’s a little expensive though. That’s how you can spend your Day 5 in Havelock Island.
Day 6: Return to Port Blair, explore the city, visit museums, shopping in Aberdeen Bazar
Renowned as the heaven for adventurers, trekkers, nature lovers, foodies, and honeymooners, Havelock Island manages to maintain its charm that is 100 percent tourist-friendly. It’s now the time to say bye to Havelock Island with a promise to come back again…
We checked out from Silver Spring Resort and came back to Port Blair by Makruzz in the morning. After checking in to the same J Hotel in Port Blair, we decided to visit museums in Port Blair – Zonal Anthropological Museum and Naval Marine Museum (Samudrika) comprises the city tour.
It’s a wise decision to spend afternoon time exploring museums to stay indoors and it will keep you busy in exploration.
Zonal Anthropological Museum is just a 2 min drive from our hotel, and from there Samudrika Naval Marine Museum is a 5 min drive away.
You will get the opportunity to learn and understand the tribal life in Andaman and Nicobar Islands through the museums. Spend an hour or less depending upon your interests. Also, visit adjoining souvenir shop to buy the collectibles.
The other one, the Naval Marine Museum often called Samudrika, run by the Indian Navy, has a collection of unique varieties of corals, seashells, and some species of fishes to educate various aspects of marine life underwater. Both are recommended for curious-minded people.
Later in the evening, we were roaming in and around Aberdeen Bazar for shopping. Aberdeen Bazaar is a famous marketplace in the heart of Port Blair city, where you will find not only groceries, vegetables, fruits, spices, ornaments, clothes, and souvenirs but also it is a hub of various shops like ATM, telephone, internet cafe, restaurants, lodging, travel booking companies, etc.
Do not forget to take souvenirs back home. If you find souvenirs expensive in some shops, I recommend ‘Andaman and Nicobar Emporium – Sagarika’, a government-aided store where you will find them at reasonable rates. That’s how we spent our Day 6 exploring the city, shopping, and of course, eating local delicacies.
Day 7: Mount Harriet National Park, Chatham Island & Chidiya Tapu
It’s Day 7 in the Andaman Islands, and there are still some interesting attractions to visit. After heavy breakfast, we came to the Chatham ferry jetty located on Chatham Island by car (You can take a taxi/auto) to board a huge ferry boat. You’ll really enjoy this ferry boat ride of 10-15 min, which takes you to Bambooflat ferry jetty, capable of carrying motorbikes, and cars along with people is a great way of local transportation here.
You need to hire a jeep from Bambooflat jetty to Mt. Harriet National Park, a 5.1 km road that passes through the lush tropical forest. During the journey, your driver will show you the place from where the picture of the old Indian 20 Rs. currency note was taken.
It’s the third highest peak in the A & N archipelago, offering great views of coastal terrain from their watchtowers, you will get the view of North Bay & Ross Islands from an Emerald viewpoint.
It is a home for a variety of butterflies and one of the famous trekking spots. The trail begins from Mount Harriet and ends at Madhuban offering sights of exotic plants, wild birds & animals, and butterflies along the way.
There is a hiking opportunity at Chidiya Tapu as well, famous for bird watching. For those who are interested, I would recommend taking a guided trekking tour or traveling in groups for the safer side. We did not go trekking, because it requires more relax-time, and we have other plans for the day.
After returning to Chatham Island by the same ferry, we went to see Chatham Saw Mill, one of the oldest & largest in Asia, was set up in 1883 and is still running to fulfil the requirements of saw and timber for construction on the island.
It will be an informative tour of an hour or less, where you learn about the types of woods available on the island, and its processing, cutting & shaping techniques as per the requirements. The museum displays some wooden artifacts which demonstrate the skill of local people.
One can visit the other attractions of Chatham Island, Japanese War Bunker of Second World War & Forest Museum located near the Chatham Saw Mill if you have enough time.
We ended our Andaman journey with Chidiya Tapu, which is 30 km from Chatham Island, and to reach here you need to cross the entire Port Blair City.
This beach is undeniably beautiful and famous for its spectacular sunsets. As I said earlier it is famous for birding and that’s why they call it ‘Chidiya Tapu- The translation in English is Birds Island’.
It is far from Port Blair city and neglected by many tourists, a less commercial place with no water sports, no restaurants & other amenities, which anyway is good for the environment, as a result, you’ll find this beach is so clean and serene.
People come here in the evening to see the sun setting down beyond the hills of Neighboring Rutland Island, while the reflection of bright yellow lights on clean and calm water offers the perfect background for sunset photography.
We love the vibes of the beach, it is different than the other beaches, where the water is crystal clear and calm with no waves. The sudden change of landscape from a golden sandy beach to huge lush green trees on the shorelines certainly soothes your mind and soul and makes a perfect end to the beautiful island story.
Day 8: Time to say - ‘Bye and See You Again’
We checked out from J Hotel after breakfast. We were happy to manage a window seat while going back and enjoyed the extreme beauty of the Andaman Islands from the sky, bringing back unforgettable memories of the Island that we are going to cherish for a lifetime.
So, when are you planning for Andamans? or have you already been to this magical place? Whatever it be, on your next trip to Andaman, do not forget to include the aforementioned places on your travel itinerary.

A (2024) guide to plan a trip to Andaman (with insider tips)
With its phenomenal beaches, mesmerizing nature trails, stunning sunsets, and elaborate history, Andaman and Nicobar Islands is one place that had me bowled over. Located in the Bay of Bengal, some of the beaches in Andamans like the Radhanagar beach, have made it to various lists of the World’s best beaches . In fact, it is currently, one of the Blue Flag beaches in India . I have been quite vocal in recommending an Andaman trip plan for families, honeymoon couples and even solo trips. I am very confident that it will never disappoint but delight all those who head there.
Tucked away from the Indian Mainland, this archipelago of islands is still quite unexplored for a lot of reasons – the distance and the accessibility being two key ones. The place is a bit of a laggard in terms of development as compared to the bigger cities of India. However, personally, I feel that is where the charm of this Union Territory of India lies. This also, means that you need to be extra-prepared if you plan to a trip to Andaman.
Here is my travel guide to the Andaman that promises to help you with your trip – right from how to get here to staying, conveyance, restricted area permits (RAP), guidelines and the best time to visit . Where is the Andaman and Nicobar Islands in India?
These islands are one of the eight union territories of India and are located in the Bay of Bengal. The group of islands is around 1300 km east of the Indian mainland.
Brief history of Andamans
There is archaeological evidence that these Indian islands have been inhabited for over 2,200 years. In fact, there are studies that trace the original human inhabitation to the current indigenous tribes of Andamans including the Andamanese, Nicobarese, and Shompen . However, there is nothing very significant in terms of historical events known about them.
The strategic location of these islands had made it an important naval point for many Indian rulers like the Chola dynasty . There are mentions of Ma-Nakkavaram or the great naked islands in some of the inscriptions found in Thanjavu r. King Rajendra Chola II in fact, used the islands to launch an attack against the Indonesian Srivijaya empire.
It was finally occupied by the Europeans in 1755 with the Danish East India Company taking it over. The British East India Company later, took over in 1789. They colonized it – first at Chatham Island and later moving it to Port Blair in 1858. This was the place used for the exile of the Indian freedom fighters during the Indian independence movement.
World War II saw a brief change of power when the Japanese took over. Later, the islands were returned to British control in 1945 and finally, transferred to India in 1950. Today, it is one of the eight Union territories of India and also, one of the best-kept secrets for travelers.
Facts about Andaman and Nicobar Islands, India
It would not be wrong to say that this Indian archipelago is quite enigmatic. Most travelers to India do not even consider it for a visit and for the ones in India, not much is known. Here are some interesting Andaman and Nicobar Islands information that will help familiarize you with the place. These Andaman facts will also, increase the wanderlust quotient.
- Do you know how many islands are there in Andaman and Nicobar archipelago? Well, there are 571 islands of which only 37 are inhabited by humans. They are broadly classified into North and Middle Andaman islands, South Andaman and Nicobar islands. The Andaman group is separated from the Nicobar group by the Ten Degree Channel.
- Andaman and Nicobar islands also, finds a mention in the accounts of Marco Polo. He called the Nicobar as Necuverann while the Tamil rulers called it Nakkavaram .
- The names – Andaman and Nicobar are believed to have originated from the Malay language . Andaman is derived from Handuman – the name for Lord Hanuman while Nicobar is said to have come in from Nakkavaram (the Tamil name).
- One of the oldest and the most isolated tribes in the world – Sentinelese live on the North Sentinel island. They are not fond of humans and tend to shoot down visitors who attempt to land there. It is believed that there are 300 of them and they have lived here for almost 60,000 years. Definitely not one of those places to visit in Andamans 😉
- India’s only active volcano is on Barren Island which is a part of Andamans.
- The old Indian Rupee 20 has a picture of the Andaman Islands on it.
- Nicobar Islands is the nesting ground for the World’s largest turtles – The Leatherback turtles.
- Nicobar Islands also, yields a rare fruit called Pandunus or Nicobar Breadfruit . Not only is the fruit edible but parts of the plant are used for construction, mats and even a bathing brush.
- Have you heard of the Coconut crabs? They are the World’s largest crabs and are found in Andamans. These huge creatures are also called as Robber crabs.
- Last but not the least – the islands are actually closer to the Sumatra Islands in Indonesia (150 km) than the Indian mainland. They are also closer to Myanmar or Burma, just 180 km.
I bet now, you are raring to go and plan your trip to Andamans. Let’s get on with some practical information on the Andaman and Nicobar tourism to help you with that.
Tips to plan a trip to Andaman and Nicobar Islands
What is the best way to reach andaman.
Let’s begin the main section of this Andaman and Nicobar travel guide with the best way to get to this Union territory of India. Port Blair is the headquartre or capital of this archipelago with its own airport and port. Earlier there were two ways to get to Port Blair – by flight or by ship . However, now the Andaman travel by ship has become almost nil and there is no alternative but to take a flight to the Veer Savarkar airport in Port Blair.
There are now direct flights from Chennai, Bangalore, Hyderabad and Kolkata to Port Blair. Having said that I must warn you that there are limited flights to Port Blair and the air tickets for the same need to be booked well in advance to beat the last-minute exorbitant rates. Chennai and Kolkata have the maximum flights to Port Blair.
There are not many Andaman and Nicobar flights from Delhi and Mumbai. You might find one weekly direct flight but the rest are all flights with a layover.
To boost Andaman and Nicobar tourism, there are always additional special flights during the peak seasons – October to May . I would recommend keeping a price alert on these flights so that you can grab the best deal on the airfare, especially if there is a sale going on.
What is the best time to visit Andaman Nicobar?
October to February is generally considered the best time to visit Andamans. This is when the weather is cooler and you can enjoy the gentle waves of the beach without any issue. March and April tend to get quite warm but you can still enjoy the islands and its activities without any hitch.
Avoid the Andaman trip after the 2 nd week of May right to mid-September . This is when the monsoons begin on the islands. The islands are prone to heavy rain and thunderstorms. You might even have to watch out for cyclones during this month. A lot of inter-island travel becomes limited owing to the stormy sea.
Andaman travel guidelines and permits
During my earlier Andaman trip in 2018, there were certain permits that were required for Andamans – mainly because it was a Union territory and a tribal area. This was largely for Foreign Nationals who required a Restricted Area Permit (RAP). To boost Andaman and Nicobar island tourism, this restriction has now been lifted and all foreigners (except those from Pakistan, Afghanistan and China) can visit Port Blair as well as the other popular Andaman islands freely.
There are a few offbeat islands like Baratang Island that require you to travel with a convoy as you travel through tribal areas. There are specific timings for these that I have written about in this post .
A few others like the Jolly Buoy island have permits as only a certain number of boats are allowed to go at a time. These permits need to taken in advance from the Andaman tourism office at Aberdeen Jetty in Port Blair.
How to do Island hopping between the best Andaman islands?
With over 500 islands, you can pretty much expect to do a lot of Island hopping. I would categorize this activity into two buckets – the first are the Islands where you stay and the second are islands that you visit as a day trip.
In this section of the Andaman and Nicobar travel guide, I will be sharing tips on how to reach these Andaman tourist places.
Best stay islands to be included in your Andamans trip plan
Port Blair is the headquarters and the main island that you will land in when you visit Andamans. Consider this as your home base. It is from here that you will be visiting all the other islands on this list.
The two islands besides Port Blair that you should consider staying in are Havelock Island (now called Swaraj Dweep ) and Neil Island (presently called Shaheed Dweep). These islands can only be accessed via a ferry from Port Blair. The ferries or liners are run by Government as well as Private operators. Earlier when I had visited, one could not pre-book the government ferries. You would need to go to Phoenix Jetty in Port Blair to stand in the queues before the departure.
However, this has changed in the recent years and you can book these Ferries online through this link . The price for the same is around 600 – 850 per seat for a ticket to Swaraj Dweep from Port Blair. The above website has the fares for all the other destinations. Government ferries are usually used by the locals and have limited tourist seats.
There are three main private operators for inter-island ferries – Makruzz, Nautica and Green Ocean . Of these, Makruzz is the most recommended. I used it to travel to Swaraj Dweep island when I visited Andamans.
Very comfortable seating and easy to book as you can do so online through here . It is advisable to book the seats as soon as it opens as the same gets filled very fast. Typically the booking opens two weeks before your scheduled date of departure. Alternately get your hotel in Havelock or Port Blair to help you with the booking.
There are very limited timings and cruises available to these islands – typically just four a day.
Andaman tour plan for the day trip islands
There are many islands around Port Blair that you can visit as a day trip. All you have to do is head to Aberdeen jetty to pick an operator and book instantly. Most hotels help you with the booking as well, so that you do not have to waste too much time.
The boat operators typically offer you packages that include two – three islands and you can book at your convenience. There are group boats where you travel with other people as well as private boat hires. Ross Island, North Bay Island, Jolly Buoy etc are some places to visit in Andamans as a day trip.
One thing to note is that some islands like Jolly Buoy Island need a special permit . Only a limited number of people can go at a time to these islands. You will need to get this permit in advance from the Tourism Department counters at Aberdeen Jetty.
Where to stay in the Andamans? (Hotels in Andamans)
As mentioned earlier, the three main islands in Andamans that I recommend for a stay are – Port Blair, Havelock Island and Neil Island.
Port Blair has plenty of options in all possible budgets for you to pick from. Being a small town, you can pick your stay anywhere here and you are likely to find the key attractions close to your hotel. I personally, picked Hotel Western Park at Delanipur Junction and found it quite convenient. Middle Point is another area close to this one that I found interesting – not too crowded but had enough shops and restaurants to keep you comfortable.
Havelock and Neil Island, on the other hand, have limited stay options. Given that, they are naturally more expensive than the hotels in Port Blair. In fact, budget the cost of the stay on these islands into your Andaman trip cost.
I highly recommend booking these hotels in advance. Both – Havelock and Neil are small islands and most of the accommodation is by the beaches. You can stay on any of these beaches as they are all just amazing! On my trip, I stayed on the Vijaynagar beach in Wild Orchid Resort – a cute, small property with lovely wooden cottages and very comfortable beds. A luxury stay here as well as on Neil Island is the Barefoot resort . On Havelock, this island is on the famed Radhanagar beach.
You can book most of these hotels online when you plan your trip to Andamans. One tip that I recommend is that once you have booked your hotel, call them up and reconfirm your booking.
How to go around on the islands in Andaman? (Conveyance and transport)
Port Blair has plenty of options for your internal travel – hiring a 2-wheeler, cabs and auto rickshaws . A lot of travel companies attach themselves to you from the time you arrive. For travel within Port Blair, you can just use auto-rickshaws. You might plan on visiting places in Andaman and Nicobar Islands that are a little far off from Port Blair but manageable by road . Chidiya Tapu and Baratang Island are some examples. For these, it is best to hire a cab.
In Havelock Islands, there are no auto rickshaws and cabs on call. You have to rely on your hotel to help you with one. Alternatively, you can do what we did. We took the number of the cabbie who we found at the jetty when we reached Havelock. Whenever we required him, we would just call him. For the rest of the time, we hired a 2 wheeler and rode around ourselves. This really works well if you are attempting to plan a budget trip to Andaman.
Neil Island is even smaller than Havelock Islands and you do not really need a vehicle to move around.
What to eat in Andamans?
You get a good mix of Bengali and South Indian cuisines in Andaman. At Havelock and Port Blair, you have plenty of continental food options too. If you are a foodie, you will absolutely love the choice of shacks and restaurants at Havelock. From Chinese to continental and Indian, they sure know how to reach your heart through your stomach. Two of my favorite places here are Anju-Coco Resto and Something Different .
Neil Island, on the other hand, has a limited choice of restaurants. You might just have to rely on the food provided in the hotel that you have booked.
Mobile connectivity and Wi- Fi – an essential tip in the travel guide to Andaman.
Back in 2018, there was a very limited Wi-Fi or cellular data service. Some places in Andaman like the Baratang Island and Havelock Island were almost no-signal zones. Airtel worked the best there. Even with that, I had to keep roaming around to get that one blip of signals. Booking hotels back then was also, difficult owing to this issue. Of course, the signal free zone had its perks too – like a distraction free holiday.
However, things changed after PM Modi visited Andaman and Nicobar islands. Within months, cables were laid underwater from Chennai and today, you have 4G and in some cases, 5G connectivity on the key Andaman islands . Again, Airtel and BSNL work the best. Jio still has an issue and it is best not to rely on it.
Paying for various activities in Andamans
There are plenty of ATMs available in Port Blair and Havelock . Neil Island too, has one or two of them. However, it is best to carry some cash from the start as during my visit, I found a lot of ATMs out of cash in Havelock.
With good mobile connectivity, these days UPI apps like Google Pay and PayTM also, work well. You can use these payment modes during your trip to Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
Best Places to Visit in Andaman and Nicobar Islands
Now this can be a long long list but here are the ones that I highly recommend that you should include in your Andaman tour plan. I have also, written separate and detailed posts on a few of these Andaman tourist attractions, the links of which are included in the respective sections.
As I mentioned earlier, Port Blair going to be your base in Andaman and Nicobar island. Here are some of the key places that you must visit when in the city.
- The Cellular Jail in Port Blair – for its melancholic history and really unusual architecture. The stories within the walls can really chill you but also, interest and excite you. I also, recommend going in for their light and sound show. You can check this place out in detail through this post .
- Corbyn’s Cove – a beach on the capital island where you can indulge in water sports – including parasailing and jet-skiing. However, I recommend this only if you are not heading to Havelock Island
- Samundrika Museum – I am yet to write about this one but it is a small stop that helps you discover the cultural and biodiversity of these islands. It is managed by the Navy.
- Anthropology Museum – Andamans is native to a lot of tribals and discovering their lifestyle is quite enlightening. No pictures were allowed here and hence, describing it all might be difficult. With mock tribal huts, exhibits of their food vessels, their tools and clothes and explanations of their festivities, I found time short for this museum
Chidiya Tapu
This is a day trip from Port Blair. At a distance of 30 km. Chidiya Tapu is the place to experience the best sunsets in Andaman. For bird watchers, the island is a paradise with tons of migratory and native birds . The native birds include rare species of woodpeckers, Andaman green pigeons and woodswallows. There are tons of hiking trails and picnic spots – in short, a perfect day trip with nature.
Ross Island or Subhash Chandra Bose Island
Ross Island is an island that leaves you wanting for more. With its overgrown root structures, old dilapidated buildings, green pastures and herds of friendly deer, you will find that time is not enough. The island was initially used by the British as a residential base, which they later shifted to Port Blair. It is one of those Andaman islands that has to be done as a day trip from Port Blair . Check out how I became Lara Croft here .
North Bay island
The North Bay island is one of those Andaman tourist places that comes in combination with a visit to Ross Island. You can get to this island via the Aberdeen Jetty in Port Blair. The place is famous for water sports and you can even do scuba diving here.
Chatham Mills
Another one of those day trips from Port Blair where you can visit an ancient mill with history that leads back to World War II and the British.. This is where the first settlement of the British started with Archibald Blair. The Chatham Saw Mills is the oldest and possibly, the largest saw mill in Asia.
Note however, you can only visit it between 8.00 AM to 2.30 PM on all days except for Mondays and Thursdays.
Jolly Buoy Island
Remember – this is one island that has limited number of permits for boats. You can visit it from Wandoor Beach after you have got a permit from the tourism office. Personally, I feel it is one of the best Andaman islands with its unspoiled nature, crystal-clear water and colorful reefs.
Baratang Island
Baratang Island is one of those places that requires you to enjoy its unusual journey. I absolutely adored it – for its limestone caves, the mangrove forests and the whole experience of going in a convoy to reach the islands. You can also visit the bubbling mud volcano on this island. It is another day trip that needs to taken from Port Blair. It can be booked online through this link .
Ross and Smith Islands in North Andamans
The approach to this group of two islands was a little difficult in the past. However, now a new bridge and road is being built. The waters around these two islands are perfect for snorkeling – in fact a delight with the lovely coral world. What makes this visit unique is that if you reach here during low tides, you can actually cross over from one island to the other by wading in water.
Havelock Island (Swaraj Dweep)
You cannot plan a trip to Andaman without including Havelock Island . The place was my little heaven with its crystal blue water and unspoiled beaches. If there is a place that I want to retire to right now, Havelock it will be. This is where you need to spend at least 2 – 3 nights.
Not only is it perfect for families but it is one of those recommended places to visit in Andaman for a honeymoon. It is home to one of India’s Blue Flag beaches – Radhanagar Beach . This island is the best place to do scuba diving in Andamans. In fact, you can even do a PADI course during your three-day stay in Havelock island. Read more about this gorgeous island in this post.
Neil Island (Shaheed Dweep)
You cannot plan a honeymoon trip to Andaman without including Neil Island. It is another piece of Paradise where you can stay and engage in some water sports. The secluded air and the divine landscape of blue waters with artistic rocks adds that aura of serenity to the whole Andaman trip.
Water sports in Andamans
Andamans offers you plenty of options for water sports. It is best known for scuba diving – which I highly recommend that you include in your Andaman trip plan. You can even enjoy a half-submarine ride or do a sea walk . They have even got the self-ride seakart activity that I have so far experienced only in Mauritius (and I loved it!)
Snorkeling, jet skiing, banana boat rides, parasailing are available in plenty. Remember to engage with certified PADI instructors for Scuba Diving . The best options are available at Havelock. There are plenty of dive schools here, one almost every 100 m. On my last visit, the shore dives started at INR 2500 and the boat dives started at INR 3500.
All these activities can be arranged by your hotels or you can even do it yourself by reaching an island and engaging an operator who has a shop on it. The rates for the same are pretty standard and are displayed at the entrance of a shop. Please ensure you listen to all the instructions carefully and keep safe while engaging in these water sports.
Alternatively, you can book some of these online through here
- Andaman FlyAir Parasailing
- Scuba Diving In Havelock
- Scuba Diving For Beginners Or Non Swimmers in Havelock
What to pack for your Andaman trip?
Here is a list of essentials that you will need for your Andaman and Nicobar trip –
- Cotton clothes and beachwear
- Sand slippers
- Flat shoes for your hiking excursions
- A medicine kit with essential medicines
- A wide-brim hat
- Camera with extra batteries and memory cards
- Binoculars, especially if you are keen bird watcher
What kind of Andaman Travel Package is available for planning a trip? And should you go for one?
There are two types of travel packages for Andamans available – standard and custom. The standard packages like this one include hotels and transport including the ferries between the islands. However, they do not have day-to-day activities as a part of their deal. These can be booked online. They may not have air travel included.
The customized Andaman travel packages are designed to suit your taste. There are several tour companies like Mini India that help you with this. They can even organize the activities and help you with the permits on Andaman islands. You can even ask them to book your air tickets.
Tour packages definitely help you cut down time on booking hotels and transport in Andaman. From my experience, booking ferries, different hotels on the islands does take a lot of time and involves a lot of follow-up. It is not difficult because I did it all by myself but if you are a busy and do not have the time to research, compare and book on your own – then go for the packages.
Lists of the best places to visit in Andaman are going to be never-ending and your time here is going to be so memorable that you will want to return over and over again. So, I hope you are already using these tips, searching for your flights to Andaman and booking your hotels Trust me, it is great to discover India’s Best Kept Secret!

My trip to Andaman is probably my best travel experience ever. And yes, the magic lies in the fact that its beauty is raw and pristine. Did you try ‘Underwater walking’ though? I loved it even more than Scuba diving to be honest. Love your post. Have a great day!
I have done underwater walking elsewhere but I definitely prefer scuba to it. 🙂 Glad you too had a blast in Andamans. Thanks for stopping by.
This is very interesting information. Thanks for sharing.
Great post keep up the good work.
You made great points why one should visit Andamans. Although I always want to be connected via social media, it will not be a problem for me if the internet connection there will be weak. I will just use my notebook and pen to take down notes and just connect online when I already have a stable internet. I believe that we can enjoy more of the place if we unplug from social media.
I agree, I think I enjoyed the place more because I had a digital detox. I would recommend it too. Cheers
A great travel guide.. and the pictures are great. We somehow missed Chidiya Tapu when we visited there.
Thank you Amrita. Hopefully the next time you can make it to Chidiya Tapu
Andamans and the North East of India are some of the places that still retain their pristine charm owing to lesser tourist footfalls. But it indeed is a Catch-22 situation, and soon we could see hordes of tourists overrunning these places. This is a very exhaustive guide to visit the Andamans and brings alive the natural beauty of the place too.
True, it is a catch 22. The only solution I see is self-awareness of the travelers – to be responsible and leave the place for it is. With that hope, I keep sharing the secrets 🙂
This is really a Great post and that scuba diving image is very impressive. The attractive colorful fishes can easily grab attention. Once again…Lovely Images.
Thank you Mohuya. Scuba diving was one enthralling experience and for me Andamans will always be special because of that.
I’d probably go for Port Blair which suits all budgets, although I’d check hotels everywhere first although this sounds like the best bet. I had to google where these Islands are, they look so beautiful!
Actually, I would highly recommend Havelock and if you book well in advance, you can manage a few budget accommodations. Cheers
This is a wonderful guide to the Andamans. It is both informative AND inspiring. You really show off how much the Andamans have to offer. From pristine beaches, to secluded islands, to historical sites, to watersports – it’s so irresistible. Thanks for all the tip for foreign nationals too.
Thank you guys. You should definitely head here. Cheers
Pinned!! The Andamans was already high on our bucket list and now your beautiful pictures have made us even more desperate to get there! Port Blair sounds like a great option! Thanks for all your tips and recommendations!
Would highly recommend Havelock too. Hope you plan a trip soon.
This is really the be all and end all post with all details required to visit Andaman. Super impressed. Well done .
Thank you Prerna
Amazing guide that covers things I wouldnt even have known I needed to know! The island day trips look fabulous! Youve really covered everything!
Glad that you found this useful Stephanie. Hope you plan a trip soon.
Thanks for a very detailed guide! You did a great job!
Sounds like it is a bit difficult to get there…but like you said, that leads to part of the charm! I imagine the scuba diving is amazing – I would love to dive in this part of the world some day. (although it would be hard to get my husband here once he hears about the wifi situation!)
I would tell your partner that he needs to digitally detox and that too in a paradise :D. I would highly recommend visiting here Katie.
Andamans is a beautiful place. Some of the beaches of Andamans are comparable to that of Western Thailand. We had a great time while at Andamans back in 2012.
Yep, am sure you did. The beaches are really amazing here. And yes, quite similar to Thailand :D/ Cheers
Wow! I think that you had a blast in Andamans. No way to get bored as there will be many activities to do. I love the banana boat ride. Will certainly consider these activities in the near future.
I am sure you will love the pristine beaches here. Thanks for stopping by Ana.
I didn’t know exactly were Andaman and Nicobar islands were until know. Of course I didn’t know as well they are Indian islands, from the map it could seem they belong to Malaysia or Myanmar. A really exhaustive guide, touching all the most important points if you plan to go there. it must be a real adventure to sail fro Chennai to Port Blair by boat!
Oh, India has a lot of islands. These are on the east and then we have the Lakshwadweep ones on the West. Both unexplored and pristine. You should definitely check them out.
I will, thanks 😉
Ami, thanks for this post. I would refer to it while planning for my trip. The links you have embedded in your posts are very handy.
Thank you Saru. Glad you found the post useful.
Very helpful guide to Andamans for first timers (like myself)! I love when posts have really helpful logistics like the ferry schedule and the need to have cash. The water sports look like I’d have a lot of fun there!
Indeed. The place is just so amazing. Happy that you found the article useful. And hope it helps you plan your trip better.
I thought some of the places sounded familiar, then I remembered some of your past posts.
I love the fact you can dive there, if only it was a little cheaper!
I thought INR 3500 was quite a reasonable price. The other beach destinations have it much higher :P.
This is a nice set of tips! Your photos of blue seas make me want to to go there asap. Island hopping sounds like a lot of fun. I all for going by air … 3 days sailing is a bit too much 🙂 🙂 Not having done diving, I think the sea walks would be something I might be interested in .
It is a gorgeous gorgeous place Nisha. Hope you plan a trip soon.
What a lovely set of tips Ami..Andaman has always been on my list for years somehow it just doesnt work for me when I plan. But your experience of water activities has tempted me again. I would love to try sailing to Andaman same I did in Lakshadweep as well 🙂 As always you are good at writing travel guides!
Thank you Rutavi. You are sure to enjoy Andamans.
India is full of amazing places! I would love to.see this one one day
And I am sure you will love this one. Thanks Monika for stopping by
That’s an indepth post! Thanks for all the details. Its indeed sad that we consider the Jarawa like some leopard spotting. But I really hope we consider them a leopard in all ways, I mean, we wouldn’t dare to get into the forest and interact with a leopard!!!
I agree Bhushavali. Glad you think the same way too. I do hope better sense prevails.
Andamans looks awesome and I’ve never heard about it previously to this post 🙂 Definitely will check it out
And I know you will be pleasantly surprised by it. Cheers
I wonder how crowded it is getting now? I visited in off peak season in 2012 and it was a bliss!
Not that crowded. Still continues to be a secret.
Great guide to Andamans… I’d love to visit this place at some point. Love the islands and the clear turquoise sea!
Thank you Ariane. I am sure you will enjoy it.
What a gorgeous place, I have never even heard of this place, nor would I have known how to get a permit or that there was even great diving there! Super informative and looks amazing !
Thank you. Glad to be of help. 🙂
Andamans is a great place for vacation. The beaches reminds one about the beaches of Western Thailand. We didn’t go for for a scuba dive in Andamans.
So true, the beaches are quite like the Thailand ones except these are a little quieter 😀
wow, this looks amazing. never knew this place is part of India. I always thought that this is neighboring county of India. It looks amazing. I would love to visit it someday! cheers!
Like I mentioned, it is our secret which I have just shared with you. 🙂 Thanks for stopping by Sophi
What a great guide! this place looks absolutely stunning 🙂 Thanks for sharing
Never heard about Andamans but after I have read you guide it seem to be a lovely place to explore with a lot of activities!
It sure is a lovely place Miriam. Thanks.
It’s good to know about the special permits required and all the little details that you might come across. The island hopping sounds absolutely incredible as a holiday. There seems to be so much in the way of activities on the islands.
True and it never feels rushed. It is a wonderful place to visit.
Hey… I am from Germany and I want to visit India. Can you please tell me the best places to visit in India?
Thanks Anna for writing it. There are tons of options. Depends on your taste and your interests – beaches, heritage, adventure. Let me know what exactly you need so that I can help you accordingly.
This is going to be my guide when I travel to Andaman. The island is so fascinating that I plan to do a trip wherein I can cover as much as possible. My only worry is not to miss on the ferry ticket bookings, neither to end up spending too much time on the same. Thanks for the tips around it.
Glad to be of help Neha. Cheers
what a great info..very good guidance. this is absolutely stunning. very good place for vacation. thanks for sharing.
Andaman is on my list for this year. I believe the Andaman archipelago of islands are still not that touristy like other places in India. Your well compiled and detailed guide is really going to help me out while planning my trip.
Glad to be of help. Andamans is just lovely coz it is not as touristy .:)
I have always wanted to visit Andaman and Nicobar and I once even planned a trip but I can’t remember what stopped me. The view from the plane window looks beautilful! Did you get to see any swimming elephants by the way?
It took me 3 trip plans and 2 near bookings to get here. It is a sign that you need to get there soon. And no, did not see any swimming elephants 🙂
Andaman is a beautiful place… With those watersports and fun makes for so much fun. Loved the way you have captured it.
Thank you Rashmi and Chalukya. This place was very special indeed
This is such a perfect guide to the Andaman and Nicobar islands with all the important information. I am planning a trip here this year and this article will come in handy. Beautiful place, cant wait to head there
You will find it absolutely pristine and gorgeous. Have a good trip Tamshuk
Your post made me nostalgic about my visit to Andaman and Nicobar few years ago. I only liked Havelock Island and did my first scuba diving and snorkeling there. Though I didn’t like Neil Island. It was a total disaster. In Port Blair, I only liked Cellular Jail and its evening light show.
The light and sound show here was one of the best I have seen in India. Definitely worth the sit. Glad you have had a pleasant time at Andamans. Cheers
I would love to visit the Adamans islands. I have heard about them a few years ago for the first time and immediately thought to myself that it’s pure paradise there. I hope to make it sometimes soon, it was about time to head over to the South of India as well, after visiting the North 3 times.
Thank you Joanna. The south of India has a lot of splendid places to be discovered. Hope you plan a trip soon
Thank you Joanna. There are a lot of splendid places in the south waiting to be explored. Hope you plan a trip soon.
Gorgeous images and a comprehensive guide. Andamans has long been on my bucketlist. Will hopefully get there soon.
Amen for that and hope you can head there soon. Cheers
I am planning a visit this year with parents. Very informative blog. Wanted to know if I will get room on arrival or should I pre book it? And are there rooms available under the budget of Rs. 1000 a night? Do let me know. Thanks
Rooms have a limited availability -and thus, prebooking is advised. Also, rooms under 1000 are available but you need to be able to figure a lot of these when you reach there as they are not really listed on the internet. Cheers
Ross Island looked so amazing, the andamands look so amazing, the whole permit thing would and is putting me off
The permit thing is actually not that tough. It sure is an amazing place and I would so encourage you to visit it.
The Andamans is one of my favorite places to go scuba diving. I’d highly recommend a live-aboard experience for the best value and time spent underwater!
I agree, I hope to get there again and do the same all over. Thanks for stopping by Henry
I knew there is a lot more to India than the four major cities I’ve visited. I hope I could visit again to see the other side of India.. and I love the strict regulations that keep and maintain Andamans. The government and the people must be putting really good measures to ensure the paradise remains a paradise to last.
Thanks Joan. Though the restrictions are more owing to its strategic location. There is so much more to India. You got to come back again!
Your scuba diving pics made me nostalgic about my trip to Andaman islands when my father was the Secretary Tourism in the islands. I did water sports, drove water scooter, snorkeling and scuba diving. While diving, i touched the base of the shallow part of the ocean (around 6 meter) and was so proud of myself! I was patting myself on the back as people watched me with amusement!
(Ambuj Saxena)
I can well imagine that joy. I loved Scuba here. Sigh! I wanna go back again! Thanks for stopping by Ambuj
I must say this is such a comprehensive guide that I cannot help but compare it with the last article that I just read from another blog where the key information is missing. Great job. This is the first time I’ve heard of Andamans and it looks like a lovely place to visit in India.
Thank you Marge. I am glad you find it useful.
Great post, Ami. We are planning a trip to Andaman this year. No network and wi-fi sounds both exciting and scary at the same time. Unfortunate that Andaman does not have it’s own cuisine. Thanks for the tips. Will keep them in mind.
You are bound to have fun here irrespective of no network or specialty food. Just go for it, Cheers
I like the motor riding as one way to transport from one place to another. The motorcycles also look cool. underwater activities will also never, haha plus don’t forget to put a sunscreen on! x
Yes, the sunscreen is an absolute must, especially since you spend so much time on those gorgeous beaches. Thanks Cathy.
Scuba diving is the one which I’m looking for so many years. Will definitely make to trip to Andaman for Scuba diving. Wonderful images which makes everyone to plan a trip to Andaman
THank you so much. Hopefully this will help you plan your trip better.
looking at pictures and post, Andaman is high on my list of places to visit in India.
Andamans is our hidden secret. A definite must visit
Very informative post! A well explained post on how to reach, where to stay , what to see and where to eat Andaman, i have ever read till now. Thank you for sharing it with us.
Glad to help Sahitya. Share it around for those who are seeking information
Thanks for the informative post Ami. Looks amazing! I’m looking forward to visiting India one day and possibly some scuba. Looking forward to your next post 🙂
Thank you Lance. I hope you can visit here soon. Cheers
Andaman and Nicobar islands is definitely the best tourist location. The beautiful sceneries and the adventures type activities surely mesmerizes us.
Untouched beauty and I hope it stays that way.
Andaman and Nicobar islands is such an underrated place. Would love to visit it someday 🙂
I agree and you should visit it soon.
It was very lovely to see such a great guide to Andaman Islands.

A first-timer’s guide to India’s Andaman Islands
Oct 29, 2019 • 7 min read
India's Andaman Islands retain something of a mystical air. Ephotocorp / Getty Images
Glittering salt-white beaches washed by teal shallows, swirls of ancient, often-impassable jungle, hot-pink sunrises over spindly coconut palms – the Andaman Islands , scattered like pearls in the twinkling Andaman Sea, remain a tantalising mystery to most travellers.
Remote and still a challenge to reach, the dreamy Andamans lie geographically closer to Myanmar and Indonesia than the rest of India (1370km to the west), and are populated by both South and Southeast Asian settlers, and (sadly threatened) indigenous tribal communities. Together with the off-limits Nicobar Islands (south of the Andamans), the archipelago comprises 572 islands, with just a handful accessible to visitors. Those that do make the long journey here will find an alluring laid-back vibe, a compendium of India’s best beaches and some of the finest diving and surfing in Asia.
Considering a visit? Covering everything from how to get there to where to stay, here’s our guide to visiting the Andaman Islands for the first time.
How to get to the Andaman Islands
There are no international flights to the Andamans, so you’re looking at a domestic flight into Port Blair from mainland-India cities such as Chennai , Hyderabad , Mumbai , Delhi or Bengaluru . It's also possible to reach the islands via the original route: by sea. A few ferries rattle across the Bay of Bengal to Port Blair from Chennai, Kolkata and Visakhapatnam , though timings are unreliable and distances long.
The requirement for foreigners to have a Restricted Area Permit (RAP) to visit the Andamans was overturned in 2018. Now travellers can visit 29 inhabited and 11 uninhabited islands without permits, including Havelock Island, Neil Island, Long Island, North Andaman, South Andaman, Middle Andaman and Little Andaman (though always excluding tribal areas).
Best time to visit the Andaman Islands
December to March are the top months for warm, sunny weather, good transport links and the best diving conditions, and you’re also likely to spot turtles nesting on Middle and North Andaman. The shoulder months of October, November, April and May are less reliable weather-wise, though accommodation prices drop, crowds are down and there’s consequently less strain on the natural environment.
An overview of each of the islands
Everyone’s first (ahem) port of call is the bustling provincial capital Port Blair , on South Andaman. While in town sorting out travel arrangements, it’s worth exploring the chilling British-built 1906 Cellular Jail National Memorial , where political prisoners were once held, and the jungle-wreathed Victorian British–style ruins on Ross Island (Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose Dweep), the islands’ colonial-era administrative headquarters until 1941. But the best of this region is out in the wild: the 280 sq km Mahatma Gandhi Marine National Park is a popular day trip from Port Blair (permit required).
Where to stay: Andaman Homestay , Port Vista and Lalaji Bay View are reliable budget-to-midrange picks. Towards the upper end, go for Fortune Resort Bay Island or Sinclairs Bayview , both with sea panoramas.
Havelock Island (Swaraj Dweep)
When people rave about the Andamans, they’re often talking about dazzling Havelock Island , the most developed of the islands. Silky beaches backed by thick rainforest melt into sparkling turquoise water, and the diving and snorkelling here rival the very best in South Asia. Established operators such as Dive India , Ocean Tribe and Barefoot Scuba lead you through underwater depths to spot wrecks, sharks, rays, turtles, schools of snapper and more.
Post-diving, laze away your days catching the sunrise at Kalapathar , swimming at sheltered Neil’s Cove and strolling along fabulous Radhanagar , one of Asia’s most spectacular beaches, before settling in for home-cooked Indian-international dinners, perhaps at Full Moon Café or Anju-Coco Resto . For something more active, hike into the lushly forested interior and to Elephant Beach , or join a kayaking expedition through the mangroves.
Where to stay: Eco-conscious British-run Jalakara offers boutique seclusion, a seductive infinity pool and seven uniquely designed rooms amid betel-nut trees and banana palms. Just back from Radhanagar’s sands, ecofriendly island original Barefoot at Havelock has graceful bamboo, timber and tented cottages. Budget-friendly haunts include Emerald Gecko’s beachside huts; Flying Elephant , with its bungalows overlooking electric-green rice paddies; and backpacker favourite Green Imperial . Most dive schools have simple accommodation.
Neil Island (Shaheed Dweep)
A few notches down in busyness from its sister Havelock just north across the water, Neil Island is a delightfully easy-going, pancake-flat world of rice fields, palm trees, rocky beaches, a small bazaar and a sleepy jetty that leaps into action when ferries arrive. Budget travellers head here for the rustic beach-hut vibe that originally lured people to Havelock (though mainstream tourism is on the rise on Neil, too). While Neil’s beaches aren’t fantastic for swimming, there’s excellent diving courtesy of pioneering schools like India Scuba Explorers and Dive India (you might even spot a dugong!).
Where to stay: Fuss-free bungalows such as Emerald Gecko , Breakwater Beach Resort and Kalapani epitomise all that’s wonderful and laid-back about Neil. Waterside SeaShell is arguably the island’s most upmarket stay.
Little Andaman
The kind of deliciously isolated place mentioned in hushed whispers among enamoured travellers, Little Andaman is the southernmost island that it's possible to visit in the Andamans. It's bordered by powder-soft, sun-dusted white beaches, tangles of mangroves and tumbling teal waves that make for some of India’s most terrific surf, especially at sweeping Butler Bay and from February to April. Around 130km south of Port Blair, Little Andaman suffered serious casualties during the 2004 tsunami, but has since bounced back and now ranks among the most enticing destinations in the Andamans. Around 25 sq km of the island is a protected, off-limits tribal reserve for the indigenous Onge people.
Where to stay: Most accommodation is of the budget beach cottage genre; try Hawva Beach Resort or Ieshika Resort, just back from Netaji Nagar beach. Many guest houses rent surfboards.
Middle & North Andaman
Few travellers tackle the long journey north from Port Blair to Middle and North Andaman, but venture here and you’ll uncover outstanding snorkelling, pristine honey-gold beaches, impenetrable primeval jungle, a world-renowned turtle-nesting site, a string of eerie limestone caves, a smattering of serene offshore islets, and much more.
Kalipur beach (just outside the Andamans’ second-largest settlement, Diglipur, in far North Andaman) is believed to be the only place in the world where leatherback, hawksbill, olive ridley and green turtles nest on the same coastal stretch (mid-December to March or April). There is simple accommodation at Kalipur, from where hikes up the Andamans’ highest mountain, 732m-tall Saddle Peak , can also be arranged.
In the remote area around Mayabunder, on Middle Andaman, you can stay amid glinting rice fields with a local conservationist family at self-sufficient Ko Hee Homestay , heading out on wildlife-spotting treks and learning about traditional crafts. Or get away from it all with a spell on quiet, untouristed Long Island, just off Middle Andaman, where bamboo-clad Blue Planet is the only place to stay.
Getting around
Once you’ve made it to Port Blair, the only way to reach most of the other islands is by ferry. Government ferry tickets are released just three days ahead (it can be a scramble at ticket offices!); tickets aren’t available online and you’ll need to ask locally for schedules (there’s an information office at Port Blair’s Phoenix Bay Jetty). Buses trundle north from Port Blair through Middle Andaman and on to Diglipur on North Andaman – cheap, though time-consuming!
Thankfully, Havelock and Neil are also linked to Port Blair and each other by private ferries operated by Makruzz , Green Ocean , Sea Link and ITT Majestic ; these usually open for bookings (including online) at least a month ahead, making them the easiest option for travellers. On most islands, hiring your own bicycle or motorbike is the best way to explore.
Visiting the islands responsibly
The Andamans’ fragile ecosystems and small, isolated communities remain seriously at risk from tourism (and other) development. Divers and snorkellers can help by choosing environmentally responsible operators, ensuring reefs aren’t damaged (by flippers, or by touching marine life etc), while more general practices include minimising single-use plastics, clearing any rubbish encountered, not removing shells from beaches, and supporting hotels, shops and restaurants committed to a green ethos. If you’re looking to donate your time, the NGO Reef Watch Marine Conservation accepts volunteers.
Meanwhile, for both safety and dignity, the islands’ indigenous tribal communities live in regions off-limits to visitors. Heartbreakingly, many groups have become extinct in the last century, and there are serious repercussions for anyone caught trying to access these restricted areas.
It’s also worth noting there have been several fatal crocodile attacks in the Andamans in recent years: check locally as to where it’s safe to swim and keep out of the water at dawn and dusk.

Ross Island is ideally a two part trip, the morning to evening portion includes going around the island looking at the ruins from the era of the British and Japanese rule. the late evening portion includes a spectacular sound, light & video show (yes you read it correctly!!) which has been created specially for Ross island by Revathi (the actress)
This is a over hyped, and not worth the time and money spent to reach here. It used to be called the “Paris of the East” when the British settled here. But everything is destroyed now.
The only good place here is a beach that is on the other side. You will need to climb down and up a lot of steps to get there.
It was a perfect location for family fun, the erstwhile Ross Island has all the history of a mini Paris, albeit at the cost of all Indian labour and is an example of the British opulence over poverty stricken India. Perfect for taking pics and the picturesque light house was delightful. We took the buggy as we were a large family with kids. There are deer and peacocks too.
We’re a small crew of locals and Andaman-lovers helping you make the most of your trip to the Andamans.

Andaman Itinerary: Castaway on India’s Beautiful Andaman Islands
12 feb 2024 13 apr 2020 | danielle.
In this post, we share our 10-day Andaman itinerary and highlights from one of the most offbeat destinations in India: the beautiful, far-flung tropical archipelago of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
Tucked between the Bay of Bengal and the Andaman Sea between India and Myanmar, a cluster of little-heard-of islands makes up the remote and beautiful Andaman and Nicobar archipelago.
There are around 570 islands in this ocean-bound outpost, though less than 10 per cent of them are inhabited. Even fewer of the islands are open to tourists, and those are only in the Andaman cluster.
These far-flung stepping stones between continents have drawn people from across the region and beyond for more than 50,000 years. Today, some of the scattered islands are still home to uncontacted stone age tribes, while others blend Asian and subcontinental cultures, and some bear the traces of a more recent European colonial past.
Despite decades of outside influence, and beyond the walls of the upscale resorts, the islands that can be visited by tourists are still mostly low-key destinations, with limited tourist infrastructure.
In that regard, there’s still a sense that the Andamans are flying largely beneath the tourism radar. That said, judging by the extensive building works going on in some of the places we visited, things are changing.
For now though, if you’re looking for a little piece of rustic paradise off the beaten track, where time moves more slowly, life is simpler, the food is delicious and the sunsets sublime, then the Andamans are calling.
Planning an Andaman Nicobar Trip
There’s plenty to think about when considering Andaman travel. Two key questions though are how long you have , and what kind of holiday you’re after.
Despite there only being a handful of Andaman islands that can be visited by tourists, getting around and between them can be time consuming, challenging and prone to sudden change. The more time you have, the more broadly you’ll be able to travel. With less time, you’re better off focusing on one or two islands.
Our Andaman itinerary spans 10 days and three islands: South Andaman Island (home to the capital, Port Blair), Havelock Island and Neil Island .
We should note this itinerary is based on our ideal plan rather than our actual trip: for us, sudden severe weather led to lastminute ferry cancellations which kept us in Port Blair longer than planned, and very nearly scuttled our trip to Havelock and Neil altogether.
Fingers crossed you luck out with perfect weather and smooth transport for your Andaman Nicobar trip. We recommend being as flexible as you can though, and ready to change your itinerary if you need to.
How do you get to the Andaman Islands?
To get to the Andaman Islands, most people fly into the capital, Port Blair, from the Indian mainland.
There are several flight hubs, including Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Bangalore, Chennai and Hyderabad. Our Delhi to Andaman flight took around five hours.
Hardier souls than us might consider reaching the islands by sea. It’s a crossing of three to four days from Chennai, Kolkata or Visakhapatnam.

When is the best time to visit Andaman?
The best time to visit Andaman is between October and May, over the northern winter and spring. Summer heats things up from around April.
The Monsoon season sets in between May and September. You can still visit Andaman, but it’s less than ideal as the rains are heavy and often, and the seas can be big, which in turn means unpredictable travel schedules.
That said, this is the tropics and the weather will do whatever it likes, whenever it likes. We visited in October and experienced the ragged edge of a cyclone to the north, which drenched part of our stay and forced us to be more nimble with our plans. That’s travel!
How do I get between the Andaman Islands?
Realistically, the best way to get between the Andaman islands is by passenger ferry. There are Government ferry services and private services run by ferry companies Makruzz and Green Ocean. Government services are significantly cheaper than private services, but tickets only become available a couple of days in advance and have to be purchased at the ferry ticket offices.
With limited time, we wanted to try and gain a bit of certainty by booking our tickets online ahead of time. We did so through Makruzz.
Then bad weather led to a number of ferry services, including ours, being cancelled on the day we were supposed to travel from Port Blair to Havelock. We found ourselves in a chaotic scene at the Port Blair ferry terminal as unhappy passengers from various services converged in an attempt to board later ferries.
After multiple trips between the ferry terminal and the Makruzz offices in an effort to organise passage on another boat, we finally managed to board a ferry the next day before services were cancelled again. We were incredibly lucky, but as we’d lost a day of Havelock time, and nearly weren’t able to get to Havelock at all, it was a solid reminder that it helps to have a backup plan if things don’t go as they should.
Our Suggested 10-Day Andaman Itinerary
Days 1 & 2: port blair, south andaman island.
We suggest two nights in Port Blair at the start of your trip, and one more night at the end before your flight (in case there are ferry delays between the islands).
You only need a couple of days here as there are only a handful of places to visit in Port Blair. Of course, you may wish to stay longer if you’re basing yourself here for some further explorations of South Andaman.
It’s a good spot to get oriented though, and to organise onward ferry travel to and from our next islands: Havelock and Neil.
Places to visit in Port Blair
This rough and tumble port town rises and falls over hills to the waters’ edge in bright, flaking paint and rusty corrugated roofs fringed by lush green tropical vegetation.
The British Raj set up a penal colony at Port Blair in the mid-19 th century, and the remnants of this colonial period are still starkly visible, at the grim Cellular Jail, and on nearby Ross Island, both of which are must-sees.
One of our fave ways to take in the town, while enjoying some very tasty cuisine, was from the rooftop restaurants at the Light House Residency near the Netaji Stadium, and the Hotel Lalaji Bayview. When wild weather rained all over our plans to explore further afield on South Andaman, we retreated to these spots to marvel at the storms and rework our itinerary.
Top Places to Visit in Port Blair
Cellular jail.
Port Blair’s Cellular Jail was the British Raj’s response to Indian rebellion against their rule. It was built to house political prisoners, ensuring the country’s most prominent activists were locked far away, out of all reach.
The original jail, built over ten years from 1896, had seven long wings radiating out from a central tower, and filled with nearly 700 individual cells where prisoners were kept in solitary confinement.
Today, three of the uninviting wings remain and the Celullar Jail is a national memorial to India’s fight for independence.
There’s a nightly sound and light show that tells the story of the jail. We’d love to be able to say whether it’s worth the ticket price but we were rained out of the experience.
Ross Island
This is our favourite site in Port Blair and a must on an Andaman itinerary. A fifteen-minute ferry ride from town, Ross Island is worth at least half a day of rambling to explore and reimagine its haunting, vine-clad ruins.
Ross Island was once an administrative HQ for the British Raj in the Andamans, and a brutal penal colony for political prisoners. It was their forced labour that hacked out and built a settlement on the forested island. The island community had houses, admin buildings, even a church and a cemetery, all connected by pathways.
Ross was abandoned following an earthquake in 1941 and the arrival of the Japanese with WWII. Ever since, nature has been reclaiming her island and today, the ruins of Ross are webbed with tree-roots as the jungle swallows them whole.
Zonal Anthropology Museum
In any other place, we would probably give this flaking, faded storehouse a wide berth.
But the collections it houses, and the stories they tell about the long history of the Andamans and its people, make the Zonal Anthropology Museum an important stop on an Andaman Nicobar trip.
The Andaman and Nicobar archipelago is still home to some of the last uncontacted stone age tribes in the world – uncontacted for their survival, but also by their choice. Visiting the islands where they live is strictly prohibited, though people have tried – even recently – to their terrible detriment.
We found just being in the vicinity of such ancient culture an intriguing aspect of our visit to the Andamans. This museum is really the best way to learn about the archipelago’s Indigenous people, as well as the more recent waves of people who have brought their cultures and traditions to the islands.
Exploring South Andaman beyond Port Blair
With more time upfront or at the end of your visit, you might consider arranging a driver or a tour to some of the other key sites in and around South Andaman. These include:
- Red Skin Island and Jolly Buoy Island in Mahatma Gandhi National Park, around 45 minutes southwest of Port Blair. These gorgeous tropical islands and their crystal clear waters are alternately open to day visitors for 6 months each, giving the other island time out to recuperate. Entry is by permit only.
- Chidiya Tapu Beach – Around half an hour south of Port Blair, this is a popular little gathering place by the water. We spent our last afternoon of Andaman sightseeing here, hoping for one of the epic sunsets the beach is renowned for. If we’re honest though, compared to other Andaman beaches, we found this one a little underwhelming. Plus there are crocodiles in the water, so swimming is off the cards. Still, it’s a nice enough spot to settle back for an hour or two of people watching with a chai.
Should you visit Baratang Limestone Caves? Baratang Limestone Caves are around 110km north of Port Blair on Middle Andaman, and are touted as a popular day trip from the capital. Tour descriptions say it involves a very early start from Port Blair, a long, bumpy ride through the interior jungle of the island and a boat trip through mangroves to the caves. Baratang was originally on our Andaman itinerary before heavy rains ruled it out. On investigating further, we weren’t disappointed. The tour to Baratang involves travelling along the Andaman Trunk Road, an illegal route carved right through the middle of the tribal lands of the Jarawa people. India’s Supreme Court ordered the road closed back in 2002, to limit the increasing exposure of the Jarawa to the outside world and to minimise the risk of disease, exploitation and abuse. Unfortunately, the road remains open, and while there are efforts to minimise contact by tourists and workers passing through, there are plenty of references online to this part of the journey being like a ‘human safari.’ For the sake of the Jarawa and their health, wellbeing and dignity, we recommend skipping Baratang and any other sites requiring passage along this road, until there’s a legal, considerate alternative route available.
Days 3 – 6: Havelock Island
We spend four nights on Havelock, travelling to the island by ferry from Port Blair.
Havelock Island is the most popular tourist island in the Andamans, and while there are plenty of Havelock Island resorts, it’s still low-scale enough to feel like tourism hasn’t got a solid foothold yet. There was plenty of construction underway when we visited though, so it’s really just a matter of time before it does.
There are just two main roads on Havelock. Even so, we found it very easy to leave the busy main stretch behind and go zipping through the hinterland on hired mopeds, called ‘scooties.’
Havelock boasts some superb beaches and – along with Neil Island – serves up spectacular sunsets, some of the most impressive we’ve ever seen.
There are pretty beaches to laze on and turquoise waters to snorkel. For the adventurous, there’s the jungle trek to Elephant Beach. And for scuba junkies, it’s said there’s some of the best diving in the world. In fact, it was scuba diving that first put the Andamans on our bucket list.
There’s plenty to fill four days on Havelock, but if you’re just here to chill, choose your beach and settle in.
Here are some of the main things to do in Andaman’s Havelock Island.
Havelock’s East Coast Beaches
Havelock’s main road runs along the east coast, and there are a couple of lovely beaches backed by jungle, where early risers can greet the sunrise.
Really though, even if you like a sleep in, the pearly white sands and crystal waters of Vijay Nagar Beach and Kala Pathar Beach are perfect for sunbaking at any time of day, though swimming is best left for when the tide is in.
As we discovered, the tides go way, way out on this side of the island, leaving skies that go on for absolutely ever.
Sunset at Radhanagar Beach
A vast swathe of white sand on Havelock’s west coast, backed by vivid green forest, Radhanagar Beach is renowned for its sunsets. And by renowned, we mean this is one secret that’s well and truly out. Radhanagar is one of the most popular places to visit in Andaman.
We made our way here one afternoon and found the beach absolutely heaving with people. Still, it’s large enough that you can wander away from the masses, who tend to crowd directly in front of the beach entrance.
A meander north brings you to pretty Neil’s Cove, while part way along the beach, a pathway into the trees pops out at the upmarket Barefoot at Havelock resort. We dropped in for a drink at the hotel bar here while we waited for the sun to drop a little lower.
Trek to Elephant Beach
The secret retreat of Elephant Beach is on Havelock’s northwest coast, a stunning stretch of white sand and clear water. It’s only accessible via a 2km hike along an elephant logging trail. The trackhead is signposted off Road 4, which crosses the island to Radhanagar Beach.
It isn’t a long hike to Elephant Beach, but take note of the weather before you go. We set out on the trek but were forced to turn back thanks to serious bogs created by recent rains. We persisted until we were covered in mud and couldn’t move without slipping or being sucked into quagmires. It was a laugh, but hard and messy work at the time.
If you plan to do the hike, be prepared – take a hiking pole if you can and wear shoes you don’t mind being caked in mud.
Scuba Diving Havelock Island
Word is the Andaman Islands have some of the world’s best dive sites, and it was this endorsement that first had us considering an Andaman Nicobar trip.
Diving is also offered on Neil Island, but we opted to do a couple of days’ diving from Havelock. There are around 25 dive sites scattered around the island, with macro diving a highlight.
Unfortunately for us, a trifecta of temporary restrictions on Andaman boat diving combined with churned up waters from the recent cyclone to the north and a stormy second day, meant our dives were limited to sites close to shore in less than stellar conditions.
Our dive guides were outstanding though and did their absolute utmost to give us the best experience they could.
It’s definitely worth doing a couple of dives while you’re here. If you’re a more experienced diver, we recommend contacting the dive centres ahead of time for more information about the sites and opportunities available.
We search out diving experiences wherever we can. Check out some of our other global diving adventures here .
Days 7 – 9: Neil Island
We spend three nights on Neil Island, travelling to the island by ferry from Havelock.
Tiny, low-key Neil Island turned out to be the highlight of our Andaman itinerary. Slow-paced, rural, rustic and remote, it was here that we felt like true castaways.
We spent our days chilling on the beach, paddling and spotting iridescent manta shrimp in crystal clear waters, sampling delicious Indian curries, and cruising through the emerald green countryside on scooties.
Without fail, the end of the each day found us on the western shore with cameras and tripods. The sunsets here are without compare.
Our Highlights on Neil Island:
Sunset point, laxmanpur beach.
This curving stretch of white sand and rocky shoreline points to the horizon on the northwestern tip of Neil. Fittingly named Sunset Point, it’s a magnet for just about every tourist on the island come the end of each day. It’s a beautiful spot at any time though, and good for swimming and snorkelling.
As the only Western tourists on the beach, we attracted plenty of attention too when we visited, and spent much of the final hour of daylight chatting with locals and taking part in selfie group shots.
Laxmanpur II Beach
Tucked around the corner from sparkling Laxmanpur Beach, the rocky shoreline of Laxmanpur II stretches away to the south, accessible only at low tide. It turned out to be our favourite spot on Neil Island.
Speckled with deep rockpools full of fascinating sea creatures, backed by green jungle, and split by a soaring natural rock arch, Laxmanpur II is much more than just a great spot to watch the sun go down.
But it goes without saying, the sunsets are truly spectacular. Just be sure to check the tides so you don’t end up stranded.
Sitapur Beach
This was our local beach during our stay on Neil Island: an eye-catching bay on the east coast with interesting rock formations, turquoise water, and a lush, jungley backdrop. Huge kapok trees fringe the coast here, making for lovely forest wanders.
While it’s a great beach for whiling away the hours at any time of day, Sitapur Beach is also Neil Island’s most popular spot for watching sunrise. We made our way down here each dawn, bought a freshly brewed chai from the local pop-up chai guy, and settled in to greet the day.
Exploring the countryside
While you can cover Neil Island pretty quickly by scootie or bicycle (the island is less than 14 square kilometres), getting out each day for a ride through the lovely green landscape was a highlight for us.
It also gave us a chance to search out roadside restaurants, and we ate some of our best meals in these little family-run establishments.
We also enjoyed heading into town in the evenings to visit the small but bustling market (Neil Island grows most of the region’s fruit and veg), and stop for a snack of chai and gulab jamun (Indian donuts).
Day 10: Return to Port Blair
It’s good to have some extra time to get back to Port Blair, just in case there are ferry delays.
We had no problems for the return journey, and arrived back in Port Blair in the early afternoon.
So we took the opportunity to hire a car and driver for one last stint of Andaman sightseeing: a trip to Chidiya Tapu Beach in the island’s south (see our entry on this spot under Days 1 & 2 above) and a final Andaman sunset.
The next day, we farewelled this unique little Indian archipelago, and flew back to Delhi.

hey, a perfect itinerary that I was looking for. A relaxed and adventurous both with absorbing the local culture. I would like to know when did you visit the island?
Hi Karan, thanks for your message. We travelled to the Andamans during the month of October, and October to May is said to be the best time to visit. That said, we did still encounter some wild weather and had to be flexible with our travel plans as a result. That’s travel though – we still had a great time. Hope you get to visit! All the best!
Thank you author for your beautiful article. Keep it up.
Thanks so much, glad you liked the post.
Can you suggest some good hotels to stay in all three places – Port Blair, Havelock and Neill Island. Where did you guys stay and how was it? Thanks!
Hey Shobhit, we went pretty low-key with our stays in the Andamans. On Neil & Havelock, we stayed at the Emerald Gecko beach huts – very basic, great locations. We got around on hired scooties. In Port Blair, we found a bed and breakfast but it was out of town and with hindsight, we’d have stayed nearer to the centre. Good luck with the trip planning and happy travels! ~Dan
Hi Dan & John, Wonderfully described itinerary and your adventures in Andaman. This is exactly what I was looking for to plan my trip to the islands this December. Appreciate the small details you provided about the Limestone Caves and its legality and the diving tips on Havelock and Niel island. Looking forward to this trip!

Hello, Information about all such places are available anytime on Tourism website if you google more can be found about what all you have shared but what is interesting about your Guide to these places is your first hand experience, As for any traveler or tourist First hand experience of other traveler is always more authentic then reading on Google or Govt.Tourist website,
so thanks for sharing your wonderful journey but what I wonder is what is keeping our Govt.from exploring & developing these Islands for Increasing Tourists from Around the Globe when there is such huge Potential lying there
Personally for Me -The life time Adventure would be Seeing Those Primitive People or As You Mentioned “Stone Age Clan” “The Children Of Nature” who are Luky & Save to Enjoy the Real essence of Beautiful Earth And Till Date Have Not Been Victim To Greed Of Evolution That Leaves No One Who’s not Evolved with it & more Luky are the ones who are not been Hunted by Modern Ugly Materialistic Humans”
“Looking Forward for more of your Adventures-Good Luck”
Hey there Ramman,
Thanks so much for leaving a comment. We’re really glad to hear you enjoyed reading about our experiences in the beautiful Andamans.
I guess for Government’s it’s always hard to strike the right balance between promoting tourism and the risk of overdevelopment. We loved the laid back, low-key vibe in the Andamans and feel like the balance is about right.
The closest you’ll be able to get to the indigenous peoples of surrounding islands will be the wonderful the Zonal Anthropology Museum where you can find plenty of information and exhibits about the local tribes.
The islands they live on are thankfully off-limits to tourists to protect their health, wellbeing, and culture.
All the best Dan and John
I am planning to visit Andamans later this month. This is my first time planning all by myself instead of going with a tour company. I am so confused with how many days to dedicate to a place and what all to plan and when. It is all so overwhelming. Your post is quite detailed and has given me a fair idea of how I should plan. Really appreciate you giving all the little details. 🙂
Hi Pooja, thanks so much for your kind comments, we are so pleased to hear our Andaman itinerary was useful for your planning.
We’d love to hear how your trip goes, so please feel welcome to share your own experience and any recommendations you might have here.
Regards Dan and John
I am from Andaman and Nicobar Islands. You missed some beautiful spots like rose and Smith island and there is trekking spot in Andaman. You can also visit the rangat and mayabandar island. port Blair to digilipur car trip is also awesome experience.
Hi A, thanks for sharing some other highlights of this beautiful archipelago. We hope to come back one day with more time to explore further!
When is the best time to visit and what is the approximate budget for 4 night stay?
We think the best time to visit is between October and May, and we’d be inclined to avoid the Monsoon season, which sets in between May and September.
In terms of costs, it really does depend on your preferences as you can find accommodation from budget to high end, and found other costs, such as food, scootie hire, and diving to be quite reasonable.
Cheers, and happy travels. Dan and John
A very interesting description of Andaman Islands and its beautiful beaches. Pl also mention the approximate expdr of 10 days visit to Andaman.
Hi there K, thanks for your feedback! The great thing about the Andamans is that the islands cater for travel at all budget points, so the cost of a 10-day visit really depends on personal budget and interests. Hope you get to visit!
I thought we were pretty much done with India but Andaman and Kerala are still missing. Thanks for this detailed write up. Surprised you didn’t mention any recommended accommodations. It looked surprisingly clean in you video.
Hi Ksenija, thanks so much for the feedback! We hope you get to Kerala and the Andamans one day – we reckon you and Mirek would definitely appreciate both. We are planning to add some info on where we stayed once lockdowns are over and places start opening up again. We stayed in cabins run by the same company on both Havelock and Neil and they were very rustic….so rustic in fact, we’re watching closely to see if they do reopen. We really hope so! Cheers, Dan & John

HOW MANY DAYS ARE ENOUGH FOR ANDAMAN?
The number of days you need for a trip to Andaman depends on the places you want to visit and the activities you want to do. However, in general, a minimum of 5 to 6 days is recommended to explore some of the main attractions of Andaman, including Port Blair, Havelock Island, and Neil Island.
During this time, you can visit popular tourist spots like the Cellular Jail in Port Blair, Radhanagar Beach in Havelock Island, and the Natural Bridge in Neil Island. You can also indulge in water activities like snorkeling, scuba diving, and sea walking.
If you have more time, you can extend your stay to explore other beautiful islands like Baratang Island, Ross Island, and the Mahatma Gandhi Marine National Park. Additionally, you can spend more time relaxing on the beaches, exploring local markets, and trying out the local cuisine.
In summary, a minimum of 5-6 days is recommended for a trip to Andaman, but you can extend your stay based on your interests and the places you want to explore.
WHICH MONTH IS BEST FOR ANDAMAN TRIP?
The best time to visit Andaman is from November to mid-May, which is the dry season and the peak tourist season. During this time, the weather is pleasant, with clear skies, calm seas, and comfortable temperatures, making it ideal for outdoor activities like swimming, snorkeling, scuba diving, and sightseeing.
The months of December to February are particularly popular, as the weather is cooler and less humid, and the sea is at its calmest, making it perfect for water activities like snorkeling and scuba diving. This period is also ideal for exploring the islands and soaking in the natural beauty of Andaman.
It’s worth noting that the peak tourist season can mean higher prices for flights, accommodation, and activities, and the popular attractions can get crowded, so it’s important to book in advance and plan accordingly. Overall, the best time to visit Andaman is during the dry season, from November to mid-May, for the best weather and optimal conditions for outdoor activities and sightseeing.
WHICH MONTH IS CHEAPEST TO VISIT ANDAMAN TRIP?
The cheapest time to visit Andaman is typically during the offseason, which is from May to September. During this period, the number of tourists visiting the islands decreases, and the prices for flights, accommodation, and activities tend to be lower than during the peak tourist season.
However, it’s important to keep in mind that Andaman has a tropical climate, and the offseason coincides with the monsoon season, which can mean heavy rains and strong winds. While it’s still possible to visit during this time, it’s worth considering the potential impact on outdoor activities and sightseeing.
HOW TO CHOOSE BEST ANDAMAN ITINERARY FOR MY TRIP
Choosing the best Andaman itinerary depends on several factors such as your interests, budget, and duration of stay. Here are some tips to help you choose the best itinerary:
- Decide on the duration of your stay: The ideal duration for an Andaman trip is around 5-6 days, but you can customize it according to your preferences and budget.
- Prioritize your interests: Andaman offers a wide range of activities such as water sports, island hopping, historical tours, and nature walks. Prioritize the activities that interest you the most and plan your itinerary accordingly.
- Consider your budget: Your budget will play a crucial role in determining your itinerary. If you’re traveling on a tight budget, you can opt for budget-friendly activities such as trekking or visiting local markets. - Type of ferry: There are different types of ferries available in Andaman, including government-run ferries, private ferries, and catamarans. Government-run ferries are cheaper but may have limited facilities, while private ferries are more expensive but offer better facilities and services.
- Facilities on board: Check the facilities available on board, such as air conditioning, seating arrangements, washrooms, and food and beverage options. Private ferries generally offer better facilities and services compared to government-run ferries.
- Safety measures: Ensure that the ferry you choose follows proper safety measures and guidelines. Check if the ferry has life jackets and other safety equipment on board.

- Research the operator: Make sure you select a reputable water sports operator that follows safety protocols and has proper licenses and certifications. Check online reviews or ask for recommendations from your hotel or a local travel agent.
- Know the risks: Water sports can be risky, so it’s important to understand the risks involved and take necessary precautions. Always wear appropriate safety gear, follow instructions given by your instructor or guide, and be aware of any potential hazards.

Andaman Islands: The Complete Guide
jayk7 / Getty Images
The Andaman Islands are the largest archipelago in the Bay of Bengal, off the east coast of India . Although these remote islands are actually closer to Myanmar in Southeast Asia, they're a Union Territory of India. There are about 550 islands in the group, but only 28 are inhabited. Approximately 30 percent of the area is designated tribal reserve that's out of bounds to tourists, as some tribes are known to be hostile (this includes the Sentinelese, who have killed people). However, the parts that can be visited offer a dreamy combination of wild jungle, immaculate beaches, a kaleidoscope of coral, and flaming sunsets. There's something for everyone from intrepid travelers to luxury tourists, and adventure enthusiasts to solitude-seekers. Find out more in this guide to the Andaman Islands.
Planning Your Trip
- Best Time to Visit: The tropical climate is warm and humid all year. For perfect, sunny days, the best time to visit is from January to April, which is the high season. December to March is the best time to see turtles nesting.
- Language: English is widely understood and used for official communication. Bengali is the most common language though. Other Indian languages spoken by some people are Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, and Malayalam.
- Currency: Indian rupee.
- Time Zone: Indian Standard Time. Sunrise is very early, about 4:30-5 a.m.
- Getting Around: Most islands can only be reached by passenger ferries. The main group of islands—North, Middle and South Andaman—is connected by the Andaman Trunk Road (ATR), with ferry crossings and bridges. Depending on the place, various types of local transport may be available including auto rickshaws, taxis, shared jeeps and public buses. Costly seaplane and helicopter services operate between a few islands such as Port Blair and Havelock Island. On the islands, it's convenient to hire a scooter or bicycle.
- Travel Tips: Expect to go on a digital detox because Internet connectivity is generally poor. Credit cards are widely accepted in Port Blair at upmarket hotels and restaurants. You'll most likely need to pay with cash in other places. Stock up on cash in Port Blair because it may not be possible to get money elsewhere. There are a couple of ATMs on Havelock Island and Neil Island but they don't always work. Book ferry tickets in advance using a local travel agent to avoid a lot of hassle or missing out in peak season. Experience Andamans is most popular.
Getting There
Port Blair, on South Andaman, is the capital and entry point to the Andaman Islands. It's only accessible via the Indian mainland. There are regular non-stop direct flights from Kolkata in West Bengal and Chennai in Tamil Nadu. Direct flights are also possible on various days from Delhi, Vishakapatnam in Andhra Pradesh, Bhubaneshwar in Odisha, Bangalore in Karnataka , and Hyderabad in Telangana . Budget travelers who have a few days to spare and don't mind roughing it can try their luck traveling by boat. The Shipping Corporation of India operates passenger services once a week from Kolkata and Chennai, and once a month from Vishakapatnam.
Previously, foreigners needed a Restricted Area Permit (obtainable on arrival at Port Blair) to visit the Andaman Islands. However, this requirement was lifted in August 2018 for all foreigners except those from Afghanistan, China, and Pakistan.
Where to Go
Tourists can now visit the following parts of the Andaman Islands without a Restricted Area Permit: East Island, North Andaman, Smith Island, Curfew Island, Stewart Island, Land Fall Island, Ayes Island, Middle Andaman, Long Island, Strait Island, North Passage, Baratang Island, South Andaman, Havelock Island (renamed Swaraj Dweep), Neil Island (renamed Shaheed Dweep), Flat Bay, North Sentinel Island, Little Andaman, Narcondam Island, Interview island and Viper Island.
It's not possible to spend the night on all of the islands. In addition, permits are still required to visit forests, wildlife and marine sanctuaries, and tribal reserves within the islands (such as North Sentinel Island) because they're protected areas. The cost of the permits can be prohibitive for foreigners. You can expect to pay 1,000 rupees for a permit to visit Mahatma Gandhi Marine National Park near Port Blair, or Ross and Smith Islands near Diglipur on North Andaman. (Indians only pay 75 rupees.)
Tourism in the Andaman Islands mostly takes place in Port Blair, the islands around South Andaman, and Havelock Island to the north. Apart from Port Blair, Havelock Island is the only island with fully developed tourist infrastructure. Infrastructure is quickly catching up on Neil Island , its nearby neighbor, though. This island is less commercialized but still comfortable.
For those who want to get off-the-beaten-track:
- Baratang Island, between South and Middle Andaman islands, has mud volcanoes, limestone caves, mangrove creeks, and a spot where thousands of parrots flock to roost every evening.
- Long Island, off the coast of Middle Andaman Island, is ideal for those looking for a slow pace of life and local community atmosphere.
- Diglipur is the major town on far North Andaman Island but nearby Kalipur Beach is more pleasant. Saddle Peak (the highest point in the Andaman Islands at 732 meters above sea level), Smith and Ross Islands marine sanctuary, and tiny Craggy Island are other places to visit in the area.
- Little Andaman Island is as far south as you can go. This area was badly damaged by the 2004 tsunami but has slowly recovered. There's no tourist infrastructure there, apart from simple guesthouses and huts on the beach. It's best known as a surfing destination.
Things to Do
All notable historical attractions are located in and around Port Blair . The Andaman Islands are rated among the best scuba diving sites in the world though snorkeling is a popular alternative. Other activities include various watersports, island hopping, jungle treks, fishing, bird watching, undersea walking, and surfing. And, of course, chilling by the beach!
The top things to do in the Andaman Islands are:
- City tour of Port Blair including British-era colonial buildings, museums, World War II bunkers, Corbyn's Cove, and the notorious Cellular Jail (there's an evening sound and light show).
- Harbor Cruise around Port Blair, North Bay Island, Ross Island and Viper Island.
- Day trip to Mahatma Gandhi Marine National Park in Wandoor, including Jolly Buoy and Red Skin islands.
- Nature walk through the biological park and sunset at Chidya Tapu.
- Scuba diving and snorkeling around Chidya Tapu, Havelock Island (the main area) and Neil Island. Some recommended companies are Planet Scuba , Lacadives , Infinity Scuba, Barefoot Scuba , Dive India , Andaman Bubbles , and India Scuba Explorers .
- Watersports at the Rajiv Gandhi Water Sports Complex in Port Blair, and Elephant Beach and Nemo Reef opposite the helipad on Havelock Island.
- Undersea walk at North Bay Island.
Offbeat things to do in the Andaman Islands include:
- From Baratand Island, take a boat through the dense mangrove jungle and go on the Mangrove Canopy Walk to a massive limestone cave.
- Trek or take a boat from Long Island to secluded Lalaji Bay.
- Take a boat from Long Island through North Passage to Merk Bay and go snorkeling.
- Witness turtle nesting at Dhaninallah beach , Karmatang beach, Cutbert Bay, Kalipur beach, or pristine Ramnagar beach ( Middle and North Andaman Islands ).
- Trek through Mount Harriet National Park near Port Blair, or to Saddle Peak.
- See the only active volcano in India on Barren Island. Experience Andamans conducts boat tours.
- Watch Smith and Ross Islands become two separate islands when the tide is out.
What to Eat and Drink
Seafood is the specialty in the Andaman Islands. Mandalay Restaurant in Port Blair and Red Snapper at the Wild Orchid Resort on Havelock Island are the best places to dine. Indian cuisine is commonly served in restaurants. Alcohol is a hit and miss affair though. It doesn't flow freely, so it's best to get your own supply from liquor stores in the area. Generally, only high-end restaurants attached to luxury hotels serve alcohol, and bars are few and far between.
Where to Stay
Andaman and Nicobar Islands Integrated Development Corporation (ANIIDCO) has a few hotels. The best ones are Dolphin Resort on Havelock Island and Megapode Resort in Port Blair.
- In Port Blair: Sinclairs Bayview is the only hotel with a sea view from most of its rooms. ITC Fortune Resort Bay Island and Sea Shell Port Blair are the other luxury options. Ocean-facing Kokari Guesthouse is recommended on Foreshore Road, within walking distance of the jetty. Sea View Residency is a cheaper bed and breakfast in the same area.
- In Wandoor: Sea Princess Beach Resort and Anugama Resort are surrounded by beach and jungle.
- On Havelock Island: Luxurious yet eco-friendly Barefoot at Havelock is the most popular place to stay on the Andaman Islands. The Taj Exotica Resort and Spa is a gorgeous new luxury resort on famed Radhanagar Beach. Jalakara is a chic new intimate boutique hotel in the jungle that offers special immersive experiences. Check out these other accommodations for all budgets on Havelock Island too.
- On Neil Island: Sea Shell and Silver Sand Beach Resorts are new upmarket options. Pearl Park Beach Resort has cute cottages in a tropical garden setting by the ocean, a swimming pool, and sunset viewpoint.
- On Long Island: Blue Planet is a delightful, eco-friendly place to stay off-the-beaten-track. It has a range of huts and cottages, some with shared bathrooms, for all kinds of travelers.
- At Kalipur Beach on North Andaman Island : Pristine Beach Resort provides decent budget-friendly accommodations.
- On Baratang Island: Dew Dale Resorts is relaunching operations at the end of September 2019.
- On Little Andaman Island: Try Greenwood Island Resort .
Culture and Customs
Hinduism is the main religion in the Andaman Islands. As many people are Bengalis, Durga Puja is the biggest festival celebrated. There's also a large minority of Christians. Muslims are a small minority. Indigenous tribes make up about 10 percent of the population and most follow their own distinct shamanistic religion. They believe in spirits of the dead, which are associated with the sky, sea, and forest. They also believe it's possible to communicate with the spirits through dreams. The two most important ones are Puluga (also known as Biliku) and Tarai, connected to the monsoon winds and storms.
The Andaman Islands has a conservative culture. While revealing swimwear is fine for the beach, make sure you cover up in other local areas such as village markets and jetties.
Money Saving Tips
