15 Best Portland Tours

Portland, Oregon is an amazingly diverse city that is bursting with natural splendor and rich history. It is also one of the west coast’s most hip and trendy centers for art, cuisine, and fashion.

If natural beauty is your thing, you’ll have no problem filling up your schedule with mountains, volcanos, waterfalls, and gorges. Once you’ve had your fill of Mother Nature, you’ll find plenty of museums, markets and historical sites that’ll give you great insights into the area’s culture and background as well.

Though Portland is known for its rain, the winters are usually mild and don’t get snow like the inland portion of the state, so year-round visits are okay.

1. Full-Day Mt. Hood Loop Tour

Mt. Hood

Majestic Mt. Hood is one of Oregon’s natural icons and is well worth the effort to visit.

Located near the mouth of the Columbia River Gorge, it’s snow-covered throughout much of the year and is home to a multitude of amazing waterfalls, including the second tallest in the country.

In addition to all this natural beauty, you’ll visit a few trendy shops and a wine tasting room.

The tour lasts about nine hours and includes door-to-door transportation from Portland. The only things that aren’t included are food, drinks, and tips.

Book in advance if you can as this popular tour fills up quickly.

2. Full-Day Portland City and Country Wine Tasting Tour Combo

Vineyard near Portland, Oregon

This full-day tour of the city of Portland and the surrounding wine region is a great way to experience a little yin and yang in the same day.

Portland is recognized as one of America’s most scenic cities; it’s full of cultural, historical and culinary destinations, many of which you’ll experience first-hand on this tour.

The famous Portland Japanese Garden and Museum of Art are a few of the tour’s notable stops. After all the city stops have been exhausted, it’ll be time for some idyllic country scenes, tasty appetizers, and delicious, locally produced wine.

Everything except gratuities is included.

View Prices & Reviews

3. Mount St. Helens Full-Day Tour

Mount St. Helens

In addition to its overwhelming scale and beauty, Mount St. Helens is one of the most monitored and scientifically relevant to North America’s volcanos.

This tour will delve into the history and geology of this massive volcano. With a little luck, you’ll be able to see many animals that live in the area, including elk, deer and the always-popular otters.

Your guide on this full-day tour will have a background in science and nature, so don’t hesitate to bombard him or her with tricky technical questions.

Time permitting, you may do a bit of cave exploration as well, so dress accordingly.

4. 5-Hour Microbrewery Experience

Microbrewery Experience

Like a lot of hip cities all over the country, Portland has experienced a beer renaissance in recent years, especially in the micro-brew sector of the huge beer market.

This five-hour guided microbrewery tour is a great way to meet some likeminded travelers and locals, sample some amazing beers of all different varieties, and just have a downright good time.

Everything is included except food and the aspirin you’ll need the following morning.

While traveling from pub to pub – which are spread throughout the city – you’ll get some amazing views of the historic skyline and the city’s ethnically diverse neighborhoods.

5. Chocolate Decadence Walking Tour

Chocolate Decadence Walking Tour

Portland is considered by many to be ground zero for the country’s coffee mania, and the food and spirits are darn good too, but it’s also a west coast hotspot for chocolate.

This tour focuses on the dark and addictive nectar in all its wonderful forms. It includes visits to confectioners, after which you’ll get to sample some of their products.

The tour is done on foot, so wear comfortable shoes, though you won’t travel more than a few miles in total.

It’s one of the quirky and delectable things you’ll do in Portland that might just be a true standout.

6. 2-Hour Beyond-Bizarre Walking Tour

Beyond Bizarre Walking Tour

If you’ve ever wanted to don a jumpsuit and go after ghosts like Bill Murray and Dan Aykroyd, this may be your only chance.

All kidding aside, whatever you do, don’t confuse this tour with some phony, staged performance.

You’ll get real equipment that’s used by paranormal researchers and go to real places that have histories of ghost activity, so if you’ve got a weak ticker, take a pass.

Past participants have especially appreciated the search for a working girl named Nina who went missing under suspicious circumstances more than 100 years ago.

There are family-friendly and adult-only tours so choose accordingly.

7. 2-Hour Street Food Walking Tour

Portland Street Food Walking Tour

No matter where you go, there’s really no better way to get acquainted with the locals and their food culture than by hitting the streets and sampling street food.

The Portland food scene is hip, vibrant and full of world-class chefs who’ve thrown in the towel and joined the street food revolution.

You’ll sample an array of cuisines, with influences that you’ll recognize from around the country and the world; there may even be a few that are truly new and unique.

Your guide will be an enthusiastic foodie and you’ll hit seven or more spots, so come hungry.

8. Amazing Makers and the Things They Make Tour

Makers And Their Amazing Things

Though this tour may sound like a bit of a tongue-twister, it’s full of interesting and creative people and the wide array of products they make, mostly with their own two hands.

If you’ve always been on the creative side but struggle with original ideas and motivation, this tour might just be the spark you’ve been looking for.

You’ll make your way through the Pearl and Chinatown Districts which are notable centers of Portland’s creative scene; most of the products you’ll see are one of a kind.

You’ll be surprised at all the wonderful things that can be made with simple materials.

9. Best of Eugene City Tour

Eugene, Oregon

Scenic Eugene is often referred to as the ‘Emerald City.’ On this guided tour, you’ll be introduced to many of its historic locations like Owen Rose Garden and the Museum of Natural and Cultural History.

Many previous tour guests especially liked the Cascades Raptor Center, which is a rehabilitation center for injured birds of prey like hawks, eagles, and owls.

The city is home to The University of Oregon and is full of unique architecture, neighborhoods and many other interesting tidbits of Oregon’s history that’ll make this tour a fun and educational experience.

Everything is included except gratuities for your guide.

10. Mt. Hood and Hood River Valley Tour

Mt. Hood And Hood River Valley Tour

The Portland area is home to some of the west coast’s most majestic scenery, of which Mt. Hood and the Hood River Valley are notable examples.

This full-day tour will drive through the Columbia River Gorge, which, in case you haven’t seen it before, is a majestic sight that you won’t forget.

You’ll see Mt. Hood from many different vantage points and get up close to a few of the area’s many waterfalls as well.

For lunch, you’ll stop at the Timberline Lodges; set at nearly 6,000 feet, they offer some of the region’s most amazing views, after which you’ll have time to do a bit of self-guided exploring.

11. Neighborhood and Parks Half-Day Tour

International Rose Test Garden, Portland

If you’ve only got a half-day of valuable vacation time to spare and want to see some of Portland’s unique neighborhoods and parks, this tour is a perfect fit.

You’ll get acclimated with stops in all four of Portland’s quadrants and will visit some popular microbreweries, a few of the area’s most scenic and historic bridges, and the largest independent bookstore in the world.

Portland is also known for its beautiful parks, of which the International Rose Test Garden is perhaps the most beautiful and well-known.

Bring a few extra layers as Portland’s weather is subject to quick changes and lots of rain.

12. Oregon Coast Day-Tour to Cannon Beach and Haystack Rock

Cannon Beach and Haystack Rock

The Oregon coast is some of the most majestic you’ll find along the coastal highway that runs from California to Washington.

Cannon Beach and Haystack Rock are a few of the most scenic and are the tour’s stars, but you’ll also visit Oswald West State Park and Manzanita.

You’ll see all these sites from a comfortable mini-bus and will have ample opportunity to get out and breathe the fresh air, take in the views and stretch those legs too.

This tour is a great choice for photographers keen on capturing the rugged beauty that’s so bountiful in the area.

The tour is approximately eight hours long and food and tips aren’t included.

13. Multnomah Falls and Columbia River Gorge Half-Day Tour

Multnomah Falls, Oregon

With so much natural beauty, it may be difficult to decide just what to see when visiting Portland.

If you’d rather leave the decision making up to the professionals, then this half-day tour to Multnomah Falls and the Columbia River Gorge would be a good place to start.

Part of the route you’ll follow to the falls and gorge will be along the Louis and Clark Trail made famous by the area’s first explorers who visited the region nearly two centuries ago.

You’ll also see the Bonneville Dam and fish ladders, which will be particular favorites of the little animal lovers in your group.

14. Pink Trolley 1 or 2-Day Hop-On Hop-Off Tour

Portland Pink Trolley

If active and informal tours are your cup of tea, then this one or two day tour is for you.

The famous pink trolley will take you and your companions to 13 city stops, including the International Rose Test Garden, Pioneer Square, and the Oregon Historical Society Museum.

It’ll be up to you which sites you want to pay to see; if you’d rather just stroll around the area on your own, that’s okay too.

Each stop is accompanied by an audio narration that’ll give you the history and relevance of the places you’re visiting; many are conveniently close to shops and restaurants too.

15. Portland City Tour

Pioneer Square, Portland

Portland is blessed with a diverse heritage and history that goes back to the pioneer era of the 18th and 19th centuries.

Pioneer Square is one of the city’s iconic landmarks and celebrates this rich history; due to its central location, it is easy to get to and near other area attractions as well.

You’ll also see the historic homes and resting places of some of Oregon’s most well-known businessmen and politicians who’ve made their own marks on the city and state.

In addition, you’ll take in many of Portland’s unique landmarks, businesses, and homes, whose architecture often varies from one neighborhood to the next.

Columbia River Gorge Tour

Experience one-of-a-kind views, majestic waterfalls & more!

DESCRIPTION: A half an hour east of Portland you can find some of the most magnificent scenery in the country – skyscraper cliffs, giant sturgeon, and majestic waterfalls. During the last ice age, a cataclysmic event occurred, that left a lasting monument along the path of the mighty Columbia River. A great flood sheared away the land, leaving stone cliffs and water falls that form the world famous “Columbia River Gorge”.

View the majesty from the Vista House atop 800-foot sheer rock cliffs, see Multnomah Falls (the second tallest year round waterfall in the country), or witness the free-falling splendor of Latourell Falls. In the autumn, you can witness salmon spawning in nearby Eagle Creek.

PRICE INCLUDES: – Pick-up & drop off at predetermined location – Plenty of bottled water & light snacks – Fun, friendly & knowledgable tour guide

PLEASE NOTE: This tour does not include gratuity. Pick-up and drop-off is at predetermined location of guest’s choice.

If you would like to be picked up outside of downtown Portland, please contact us for other options!

FUN FACT: The Columbia River Gorge is unique in many ways. Even though it is dramatic in it’s depth and size, it was only formed approximately 15 thousand years ago, during the last ice age. This is almost contemporary, in geologic terms. It is also home to the tallest waterfall in Oregon, Multnomah Falls, which is over twice the height of the Statue of Liberty!

$65 – 4 Hours

SCHEDULE: The morning tour leaves from downtown Portland at 8 AM and returns at Noon. The afternoon tour leaves from downtown Portland at 1 PM and returns at 5PM.

Special pick-up & drop-off locations are avalible upon request and may require an additional fee.

2024 Hidden Bottle Hunt challenges park-lovers to find one of six collectibles

P ORTLAND, Ore. ( PORTLAND TRIBUNE ) — A statewide scavenger hunt returns next month, challenging Oregon residents to scour greenspaces in search of commemorative collectibles.

The 2024 Hidden Bottle Hunt, hosted by the Oregon Beverage Recycling Cooperative and BottleDrop, will run Wednesday to Sunday, July 3-7. The summer event brings families and communities together in celebration of Oregon’s history of environmental stewardship while supporting local charities.

The scavenger hunt will have clues posted daily on BottleDrop’s website,  BottleDrop.com/hunt , leading treasure hunters to the final hiding places.

“We hope all Oregonians will join us in this annual celebration and enjoy exploring Oregon’s natural beauty as they hunt for this year’s commemorative bottles,” said Devon Morales, vice president of external affairs for OBRC.

The 2024 Hidden Bottle Hunt will have six separate, simultaneous searches, geographically dispersed in parks and trails across Oregon — in the past the bottles have been hidden in different zones. One clue will be shared per bottle per day. The new design of the bottle is inspired by the sunsets seen off the Oregon Coast.

I have taken the Flix bus many times and have had all great experiences until today when the bus driver legitimately screamed at me for only being two minutes early.

Photo of Adam Z.

I took a Flix bus from Portland to Seattle and back. From Portland to Seattle it was great. Five minute walk from my apartment. Friendly driver. Not crowded. Internet. Charger. Space above my seat to store stuff. Comfortable ride. On the way back though it was a totally different story. I was scheduled to leave Seattle at 7:55pm at the 6th Ave S & S Lane St stop. Then at 3:36pm I get an email from them saying that they had to cancel my ride. WUT!!! No text message or call either. Fortunately I was on my laptop and saw the email in time, but what if I wasn't? I think this is absolutely terrible. I easily could have missed the email and been stuck in Seattle having to find a hotel at the last minute. Since I saw the email, I was able to reschedule. I took the 5:20pm option that leaves from "Seattle Bus Station" which is at 503 S Royal Brougham Way, 98134 Seattle and "Operated by MTR Western as FlixBus". I get there 15 minutes early, like they ask, but... well... I was confused. - It was a Greyhound Station. It didn't say "Seattle Bus Station" anywhere. - There was no one else waiting. I was the only one. Even a few minutes before 5:20pm. This made me think I was in the wrong place. I'd expect there to be at least a dozen or so other people like me waiting to board. - The Greyhound Station was closed. So it wasn't like I could walk inside and ask an employee or something for clarification. - There were two different parking lots outside the Greyhound Station and if it even was the right place, I wasn't sure which parking lot it would be, so I tried to frantically keep an eye on both. - Adding to the confusion, it was this weird sketchy area underneath a huge highway with lots of stuff going on. Including a huge depot or something for city buses. So I was nervous that one of the areas with the city buses was actually "Seattle Bus Station" as opposed to the Greyhound Station being "Seattle Bus Station". There were also random city buses parked all over the place, and I wasn't sure if I misjudged a city bus to be the Flix bus I was supposed to board. - 5:20pm passes and no bus arrives. - At around 5:25pm I see a MTR Western bus arrive in one of the Greyhound Station parking lots. So I walk up to the driver, ask if he's with Flix bus, he is, but he says he's just dropping off, not picking up, and I'm probably waiting for a different bus that will come after his. - So I walk back to the other parking lot. But then I decide to walk back and ask the guy for more clarification. - He says again that he's not picking up here, just dropping off. So I start elaborating that I'm going to Portland and am worried I'll miss my bus and ask if he can help me make sure I'm in the right place for my bus. He asks for my ticket. I show him. He asks when I got it. I explain that they cancelled my initial trip and just got this one like two hours ago. He realizes that it's his bus and he must not have gotten the notice or something since it was two hours ago and tells me to board his bus. So yeah. Wtf. I easily could have missed my bus. Poor communication. They should have made absolutely sure to communicate with the drivers, get affirmation from the drivers that they know what's going on, have pictures of the pick up locations so that it's visually clear where you're supposed to be, and provide text message updates if a bus is running late. There should also be large signs saying something like "Flix bus boarding location here". I dunno, probably a bunch of other stuff too. And regarding the cancellation, I _kinda_ get it. There probably weren't enough passengers and to it wouldn't be profitable for them to run the route. And tickets are very cheap. If your offering is "the tickets will be cheap in exchange for the timing being unpredictable", that's valid. However, if that is indeed what you're offering, you need to be absolutely clear about that to your customers. That way customers know what they're getting into and consent to it. Instead, the whole "we might cancel your trip at the very last minute" thing was probably hidden in the fine print somewhere which I see as quite unethical. Oh, and on the trip back the internet stopped working after 20 minutes or so. "Error: time quota limit exceeded". PS: I find it odd that on Yelp there is a different FlixBus business page for each drop off/pick up location. As a customer I want to know what FlixBus is like overall as a company. They probably do it per-location so that customers only see a handful of 1 star reviews as opposed to thousands and can rationalize to themselves that it's just a small sample size.

Trying to work out a problem using a voucher and they do not respond to CHAT. I tried calling their Customer Service number, pressed the number as directed and they hung up.

Photo of Irene G.

Confusing/scamming processe to edit trip after purchase and customer service extremely unhelpful. I purchased a round trip ticket which is two separate tickets and I got to select my seats, I paid the extra $5 for each trip to have a passenger free seat due to covid concerns. I made the mistake of booking the two tickets on the same date, I needed to change the date of the second ticket I was able to do this but then I was not able to select a passenger-free seat and I was issued a voucher. In order to select my seat I then called customer service they informed me that I would need to cancel my trip and book a new trip because they could not change the seats post booking (why?). The customer service representative told me that I can go to the help section on the website and receive a cash refund for my vouchers that I was not able to use because you cannot use a voucher from a canceled booking on the same trip (his words) I then purchased the new trip went to the help section and could not find that option. So I called customer service again and they denied me the refund even though I had now paid in full twice. The representative was not helpful just repeating that is not in our terms and conditions over and over again. I just want to know why I was misled.  The second customer service representative told me verbatim I was misled by the first customer representative.  I don't appreciate being told different information by multiple representatives, and the convoluted way refunds and trip edits are handled is shady. Very disappointed Will not be using again

If I could give 0 stars I would. Bus was an hour late with no notice of delay. Half way on our trip the bus broke down and delayed us even more. Turned my 3 hour trip into a day trip. Got to my station at night when I was supposed to get there in the afternoon. All they offered for the inconvenience was a 15% coupon off my next bus ride that I will never be taking with Flix. 0/10 wouldn't recommend.

Terrible, terrible customer service!! I accidently booked my return bus ticket to the incorrect city. Their website told me that I could go to "Manage my booking" to make corrections. This will NOT allow you to change the destination. Once I called customer service to ask if they could refund a ticket I was unable to use, the flat out REFUSED. So they tell you that you can change a booking (which you cannot) then will not refund your money for the ticket. This is a rip off scam and I'm not sure how they get away with it. Not sure how companies can get away with taking your money even if you cannot use the services. Luckily I had money to book a train ticket, but if you are short on funds, use at your own risk and do NOT make a mistake.

Still waiting with everyone for a bus that's over 3 hours late. No explanation and none of the other drivers from other flixbus know anything. I heard from other passengers that this happens all the time. I wouldn't waste your time and money with such unreliable transportation and service. No phone to call. Just updates on website saying delayed with a later time each time.

Very clean, affordable, quick and comfortable Ride up to SeaTac. Perfect for my needs, and as a bonus, it even has a bathroom on board.

My week long trip to Portland has turned into 3 week stay due to FlixBus cancellations. Both of my bookings have been canceled 1.5 hours prior to boarding the bus back home. I will stick with Greyhound.
