When you think of visiting Holland you immediately think about New Amsterdam and while New Amsterdam is a great city do not rule out spending time in Rotterdam. We spent a few days in Rotterdam as the starting point for a Cruise to the Baltics. We really didnt know that much about Rotterdam other than it is one of the largest ports in Europe. We stayed at the Holiday Inn which is located in the heart of the city. The hotel is valued priced. The rooms were lovely, the morning breakfast was one of the best I have ever had and the staff went out of their way to be helpful. Rotterdam is one of the cleanest cities that I have ever visited. Its a friendly city with lots of parks and open spaces and the architecture is amazing. We enjoyed the restaurants, the shopping, the museums and we could easily walk to all of the major parks and the water ways surrounding the port. The city has water taxies and you can easily take tours using them, public transportation or tour companies to quickly take day trips to Delft, Hague, and the heritage wind mill site Kinderdisk and in season tulip park Kukenhof. These are world class sites and it is easy to spend a day in each location. So if you are planning a visit Holland put Rotterdam on your to do list as you will not be disappointed. Also if your cruise leaves from Rotterdam go early and enjoy this wonderful city. You would not be disappointed.
This is a very good trip. We were staying at Rotterdam in early April, and this trip became a very nice journey for us to depart from Rotterdam to Keukenhof, instead of travelling to Amsterdam first and heading towards Keukenhof. As we hopped on the tour bus from Rotterdam, we also had a chance to by pass Den Haag, and has a short sightseeing while waiting for other tourists. Our tour guide is very nice and helpful and explained to us about history of the Keukenhof, as well as for other places as our tour bus passes by during our travel to the flower fields. It was a very nice sunny day. Our tour guide also explained where we can see tulips and where we would not want to miss. The meeting spot for us to meet her afterwards is clear. It was a pleasant trip and we do recommend this day trip to other visitors, especially those considering to travel from the South Holland.
Excellent tour and the guide was phenomenal! Highly recommended
We took this tour upon arrival by cruise ship. At the end of the day comparing notes with others who joined the boat's bus, we learned just how fabulous our ride was in comparison. The buses were located just across the bridge from the dock. It was an easy 10 or 15 minute stroll and pleasant way to start the day. The bus was clean and modern. The commentary by Monique on the way out was informative and presented professionally. We stopped for photo opportunities both coming and going. We had ample time to tour the gardens leisurely. Our return was equally pleasant and we were dropped off right at the pier. A wonderful experience made even better by this company, guide and driver. Thank you!
Need more that 4 hours here at the Kenkenhof Gardens. Just way to much to see and experience. Lovely day dancing thru the tulips.
Great trip! Our guide was very nice and accommodating! Plenty of time was given for this trip. It would be nice if they could pick up at the cruise ship!
We really enjoy this trip not just cover the tulip garden3.5 hours plus couple tulip fields- 1 hour, far much better than princess cruise excursionfriend,s cruise excursion. We have almost 7.5 hourssolid and paid 2/3 of my friend paid5 hours princess shore excursion. We visit more tulip fields and very good tour guide lady and driver, We will try Viator tour again in the near future due to this first and good experience.

Would appreciate help to get from the cruise port to the Gardens. Does the train and buses work on one pass.
Netherlands
Hi, you can take the train (Intercity) from Rotterdam to Leiden Centraal. From there there there is a bus that brings you to the Keukenhof. It's number 854, departing from the side of the town centre. It's about 25 minutes by bus. Tickets can be bought online: [original link]">[original link]
In addition: tickets for the train can be bought on the train station Rotterdam Central. You can walk from the cruise port to the Central Station in about half an hour. Metro is possible too, but then you need an OV-chipcard. That card can also be used for the train, but because of a mistake it is or was more expensive then buying a paper ticket at the station. Personally I prefer paper tickets.
Thank you for you quick response, do you know how far the train station is from the port? The ship want $79.00 US to take a bus and tickets into the gardens but I am sure we can do it on our own for cheaper then that. Have you ever heard of a combo tkt that you can buy as part of the train, and tkts to the gardens?
See [original link] for an advice including times and prices etc...
Info for the combi ticket at: [original link]
You still need to travel from the cruiseport to the Rotterdam Centraal Station (by tram).
From the Rotterdam Centraal Station you travel by train to Leiden Centraal.
At Leiden you take the Keukenhof Express from Leiden CS (bus 854).
I think this is the cheapest way: walk from the cruise port to Rotterdam Centraal Station in about 30 minutes. From there take a train to Leiden Centraal. A return-ticket, 2nd-class is 13,60 euro. You can go via Den Haag, but also Woerden where you need to change train. The website mentioned by Pijlmans is good to see the fastest way to reach Leiden. Order online a "Combi Ticket Adult Schiphol / Leiden / Haarlem" for 22,50 euro [original link]">[original link]
Total costs 36,10 euro which is about $47 which is much cheaper than the cruise company offers :)
You can indeed walk from the cruiseport to Central Station in more or less a straight line. It'll take about 40 minutes.
Use googlemaps to see the route and then use these addresses: - departure 'Wilhelminakade, Rotterdam' - destination 'Centraal Station, Centrum, Rotterdam' Don't forget to click the button 'pedestrian'!
I do recommend buying tickets for Keukenhof online since it saves you queuing when you get there.
You can download a nice Rotterdam map here: [original link]
Anything else you need to know about Rotterdam, fire away :-)
you canNOT go via Woerden on a normal trainticket-plus thats a long way around anyway. We always use EUR in EUR-so thats about 55/60 eur for the all-in excursion. Total cost (with walk) and simply buy an combo Bus+entry ticket in Leiden- as anyone does (advance brings you nothing) will be around 30/35 eur pp. On sunny sundays in season its more a matter of just follow the crowd-enormous in the end of morning.
