Queen Elizabeth 2 Dubai – Get to Know about the Middle East’s First Floating Hotel

Queen Elizabeth 2 Dubai

Queen elizabeth 2 history.

queen elizabeth dubai

Queen Elizabeth 2 boasts a glowing history dating back to over 50 years. It was originally built for the Cunard Line, the prestigious British-American cruise line operated by Carnival UK. Developed as the third Cunard Queen, it became the successor of the Queen Mary (1934) and Queen Elizabeth (1938) ships. Its unveiling was done by Queen Elizabeth II on September 20th, 1967, in the presence of other British royal elites, including Prince Philip. And the queen herself named the ship.

Interestingly, Queen Elizabeth 2 was launched at a point when aircrafts had begun to dominate the voyage industry. It was sleeker and smaller as opposed to its previous versions, thus serving as a perfect answer for those interested in luxury cruising. As it embarked on its maiden voyage in 1969, it was then Cunard’s flagship ocean liner and was also a groundbreaking vessel that redefined elegance and cruise comforts, with its glossy body inspired by British designs. It somewhat became a cruise icon of an era as it completed about 40 years as a transatlantic liner that operated between Southampton (UK) and New York.

With its final voyage in 2008, Queen Elizabeth 2 got its permanent home in Dubai’s Mina Rashid Port after an investment firm owned by Dubai World purchased it for $100 million. A decade later, this was extensively refurbished and opened as a luxury floating hotel, thanks to the efforts of PCFC Hotels, which operates under Dubai Ports, Customs, and Free Zones Corporation. It is now one of the luxury things to do in Dubai .

Queen Elizabeth 2 Facts

  • QE2 had nine diesel-electric engines, which made it the swiftest and mightiest of its kind back then.
  • Its narrow hull made it easy for the vessel to navigate through the Panama and Suez Canals.
  • It sailed at an average speed of about 29 knots.
  • The transatlantic voyages onboard QE2 took no more than five days.
  • It cruised across the Atlantic 812 times.
  • QE2 had successfully undertaken 1400 voyages and covered around six million nautical miles in its lifespan as an ocean liner.
  • It entertained over 2.5 million passengers as it completed 25 tours across the world.
  • It served as a troopship during the Falkland War (1982).
  • Some of the QE2’s world-famous patrons are Nelson Mandela, Elizabeth Taylor, and David Bowie.
  • It took over 2.7 million man-hours to reinstate the majesty of Queen Elizabeth Dubai and transform it into its current state.
  • This 13-deck hotel is the first floating hotel in the Middle East and has 1300 rooms, 13 restaurants, and a museum.

A part of the Dubai skyline since 2008, the “Queen Elizabeth 2” is now the city’s newest novelty hotel.

Dubai does glam tourism like few other cities. There’s a mall with a ski slope blanketed in faux snow, an 18-acre flower garden with 45 million blooms, and the world’s tallest performing fountain. This year, we add to the list the world’s most famous retired cruise liner, newly remade as a permanently moored hotel.

Still getting up to speed after a limited launch last month, the Queen Elizabeth 2 hotel will see an official grand opening in October, with 224 thoroughly remodeled and modernized rooms and suites, more than a dozen bars and restaurants, a shopping promenade, and a movie theater.

The QE2’s staterooms are bright and modern, but retain some classic nautical features.

After 39 years of transatlantic service, the 963-foot-long Queen Elizabeth 2 steamed into Mina Rashid in 2008 and embarked on a 10-year, on-again/off-again renovation. The project mimics the hotel transformation of the RMS Queen Mary , which sailed on the Cunard Line between 1936 and 1967 (minus a stint as an Allied troop carrier during World War II). Permanently stationed in Long Beach, California, that famous ship is now a 355-room tourist resort and museum.

In its heyday, the QE2 accommodated some 1,900 passengers, served by 1,000 crew members.

QE2 hotel booking is open now, with standard rooms coming in under the AED700 mark (about US$190), so despite its regal reputation, Dubai’s floating Parent Trap is no rival to the Burj al Arab Jumeirah . Only five dining venues are presently open, including the Golden Lion pub, the topside Yacht Club, and, when you’re in the mood for a good Beef Wellington, the posh Queens Grill, once frequented by the ship’s royal namesake. If you want the full QE2 effect, you’ll have to wait until October. >> Next: The Best Cruise Lines You’ve Never Heard Of

Queen Elizabeth 2 Ship History & Trivia

The Queen Elizabeth 2 , commonly known as the QE2 , was an ocean liner constructed by J ohn Brown & Company in Clydebank , Scotland for the Cunard Line . It was launched in 1967 and quickly gained popularity as a preferred mode of transatlantic travel, regularly traversing between Southampton , England, and New York City . For nearly four decades, the QE2 served as a passenger ship, facilitating journeys across the Atlantic and exploring various destinations worldwide, including the Caribbean, South America, and the Far East.

Following the conclusion of its service in the United States, the ship embarked on exotic cruises, notably completing its first round-the-world voyage in 1975. Until the early 2000s, the QE2 proudly held the distinction of being Cunard’s flagship and ranked among the largest passenger liners globally. Renowned for its grandeur, the QE2 showcased opulent amenities such as multiple dining venues, a magnificent ballroom, and a theater.

Distinguishing itself from its predecessors, the QE2 boasted a contemporary design within its interiors, departing from the art deco style previously associated with ships. However, it maintained an elegant ambiance adorned with an extensive collection of artworks , sculptures, bronzes, tapestries, and paintings depicting the royal family. The ship also showcased objects and artwork originating from prior Cunard vessels, including the RMS Mauretania (1906).

Born between the era of transatlantic travel and the rise of air travel, the Queen Elizabeth 2 was designed as a luxury hotel-cruise ship , offering cruise services for most of the year and transatlantic routes with three classes (First, Cabin, and Tourist) according to a set schedule. However, it never provided year-round express route services.

Throughout its eventful history, the QE2 welcomed numerous notable figures, including Queen Elizabeth II , who inaugurated the ship in 1969. Inside the vessel, various silver plaques commemorate visits from members of the royal family and other distinguished individuals worldwide, including South African President Nelson Mandela .

During the Falklands War , the QE2 temporarily served as a troopship before returning to commercial operations. In 2008, it embarked on its final voyage and retired from service, subsequently being sold to a Dubai government-owned company. Extensive restoration work was undertaken, transforming the QE2 into a floating luxury hotel known as the Queen Elizabeth 2 Hotel Dubai .

Presently, the QE2 is moored at Port Rashid in Dubai and has become a popular tourist attraction, affording guests the opportunity to immerse themselves in maritime history while enjoying the modern comforts and amenities offered by a top-rated hotel. The ship not only functions as a hotel but also as a captivating museum, showcasing its splendid interiors and an extensive collection of artworks and period artifacts amassed over its honorable 40-year service. Managed by the ACCOR group, since its inauguration in 2018 the hotel has undergone further renovations and now provides over 400 modern rooms when operating at full capacity.

Queen Elizabeth 2 Hotel Dubai: Our Review

Staying at the Queen Elizabeth 2 Hotel Dubai is a memorable experience, and what we liked is that it is still quite affordable, even for those on a moderate budget. In Dubai, a city renowned for luxury and opulence, the finest hotels often come with a hefty price tag. However, the Queen Elizabeth 2 Hotel breaks this trend by offering a good value 4-star accommodation that allows you to immerse yourself in history and character without emptying your wallet.

While it may not rival the service and luxury of the city’s more renowned luxury hotels, the Queen Elizabeth 2 Hotel provides adequate service at reasonable prices . The rooms are comfortable, and if you can afford it, treating yourself to the fabulous Duplex Suite is well worth it. This suite offers a terrace overlooking the sea and the city, along with two floors of modern luxury and comfort. Alternatively, starting at $200 per night , you can opt for a beautiful Captain’s Room with a balcony , or choose the more modest Deluxe Room City , which lacks a balcony but compensates with several portholes offering views of the city, starting at $120 per night .

For those with a tighter budget, the Classic King Room is the most affordable option. While slightly compact, it is suitable for couples and features a porthole overlooking the sea, all at a rate suitable for smaller budgets, starting at around $70 per night .

Queen Elizabeth 2 Hotel Dubai QE2 Ship

As with all Dubai hotels, rates are lowest during the summer months and tend to rise significantly during winter . The highest rates can be expected in November and December when prices can be double or even triple those mentioned earlier. It’s important to book well in advance to secure a reservation at a reasonable price, as last-minute bookings can lead to fully booked accommodations or prices skyrocketing up to ten times higher.

The hotel’s restaurants and bars are also worth a try, as they offer good dining options and entertainment. Moreover, the Queen Elizabeth 2 Hotel typically hosts an elegant gala evening to celebrate Dubai’s New Year’s Eve , while its restaurants serve high-quality international cuisine throughout the year. Convenient half-board packages are available, including a delightful breakfast and dinner with a generous hot and cold buffet, including vegetarian choices.

Additionally, the Queen Elizabeth 2 Hotel provides a gym, a small indoor pool , and complimentary shuttle buses to and from Downtown Dubai , ensuring convenient transportation around the city. Private parking is also available free of charge.

How to Get to the Queen Elizabeth 2 Hotel

The Queen Elizabeth 2 Hotel is situated in the Port Rashid area of Dubai , adjacent to the cruise dock. Reaching the hotel is a breeze whether you choose to drive or take a taxi. You can easily rent a car at the airport or from various locations in Dubai ( check out my guide to the best Dubai Car Rentals ) and drive to the hotel, where ample free private parking is available. Alternatively, you can arrange a comfortable and convenient private transfer from the airport to the hotel.

Please note that the hotel is nestled between the docks of a vast port area, so you won’t find immediate access to shops, avenues, or restaurants. To explore these amenities, you’ll need to rely on a taxi (which is reasonably priced, by the way) or have your own car. The Queen Elizabeth 2 Hotel offers a complimentary shuttle service that can transport you to the metro and downtown Dubai, although the frequency of the shuttle is limited to a few trips per day.

The nearest metro stop is Al Ghubaiba Metro Station , but reaching it on foot can be challenging. There is a major road with over 10 lanes that separates you from the station, so it’s advisable to take a short and cheap taxi ride to the metro station.

A Journey Through Time

QE2 History 1967

On 20 September 1967 at John Brown’s shipyard on Clydebank in Scotland, Queen Elizabeth the second named the QE2 in the company of Prince Phillip and 30,000 spectators.

“I name this ship Queen Elizabeth the Second. May God bless her and all who sail in her,” she proclaimed.

Then, with the ceremonial shattering of a bottle of Australian wine against the huge bow, the ship began her first journey into the water.

QE2 History 1969

On May 2 1969, thousands of well-wishers gathered in Southampton to watch the QE2 set sail on her maiden voyage to New York.

Four days, 16 hours and 35 minutes later, the QE2 arrived at Ambrose Light and thousands turned out to welcome the new Queen in New York on 7 May.

Mayor John Lindsay boarded the ship from a coastguard cutter outside the Verrazano Bridge along with other civic dignitaries and officially proclaimed it ‘QE2 Day’ in New York.

QE2 History 1975

On 4 January 1975, the QE2 set sail from Southampton on her first World Cruise, a journey of 38,000 miles. She visited 23 Ports in 92 days and it was the first of 25 world cruises during her career.

In March 1975, the QE2 made its first transit of Panama Canal, making it the biggest ship ever to travel through the canal. There was less than a foot to spare as the ship made its way through the canal locks.

QE2 History 1982

In May 1982, the QE2 was requisitioned for the Falklands War as a troop transport, a decision which reportedly gave the then Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher a sleepless night.

The ship sailed for South Georgia with 3,000 troops aboard, arriving back in Southampton on 11 June 1982.

QE2 History 1986

The QE2 engines were converted from steam to diesel in Germany, in a move that was expected to save Cunard £12 million a year in fuel and ensured the QE2 remained reliable for the remainder of her career.

The plant came with two new propulsion motors and new variable pitch propellers, while parts of the passenger accommodation was also modernised.

To allow for the work, the QE2 was out of service from November 1986 to April 1987. The Cunarder’s Sagafjord and Vistafjord were used to cover QE2’s transatlantic schedule as well as world cruises.

QE2 History 1988

Sydney was a popular port of call during the QE2 world cruises, and in 1988, she stayed there for three days. During this time, the Australian TV channel ‘X10’ hosted their daily program ‘Good Morning Australia’ aboard the ship while docked in the ever-popular, Sydney Harbor.

Thanks to the renowned photographer, Arthur Gibson this amazing picture was captured and subsequently regarded as “The Photo of the Century”.

QE2 History 1990

In July 1990, The Queen became the first reigning monarch to go on a voyage on a commercial liner with passengers.

The Los Angeles Times reported: “The Queen will attend a luncheon on board the QE2. An aerial display and fly-over by the Royal Air Force has been scheduled, and the same evening, passengers on the QE2 will attend a star-studded variety show and a laser-light and fireworks display.”

QE2 History 1996

Until this date, the QE2 was owned and operated by the Cunard Line, a British/American cruise line based at Carnival House at Southampton, but in 1996 the Cunard Line ownerships was transferred to Norwegian construction company Kvaerner.

During this year she was also treated to a further $18 million refit. Works were undertaken in Southampton’s King George V dry dock – the final time QE2 would use the facility before its closure.

The refit concentrated on completing work outstanding from the 1994 refurbishment, as well as general touch ups.

QE2 History 1998

To raise funds for the Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund, Nelson Mandela and Graca Machel travelled aboard the QE2 between Durban and Cape Town in March of 1998. Whilst staying in the Midships Suite on Two Deck, President Mandela met with passengers and crew alike. He unveiled a Plaque, took part in a Q&A, attended a fund-raising dinner and was interviewed by Sir David Frost in the Captain’s Cabin. In the Visitors Book, Mandela wrote: “Travelling on QE2 was an unforgettable honor and a pleasure.”

QE2 History 2002

On 29 August 2002, at approximately 21.50 hours ship’s time, the QE2 completed five million miles – a world record and a world first.

Other ‘in numbers’ facts about the QE2 include: Withstanding a 30-metre high wave breaking across her bow during a hurricane, having the largest library on the seas, with over 6,000 titles on board and her Passengers consuming almost 20 tons of lobster and 1 ton of caviar each year.

QE2 History 2007

After nearly four decades as the world’s most celebrated ocean-going liner, it was announced that the QE2 was to become a floating hotel off the coast of Dubai.

She was bought by Istithmar, the Dubai Government’s investment arm, in a £50.5 million deal that demonstrated the Gulf emirate’s continued commitment to investment in its tourist industry.

QE2 History 2008

The QE2 began her farewell voyage around the UK. So great was the demand from customers wanting to experience the iconic ship, that her last sailing, from Southampton to Dubai on 11 November sold out in just 36 minutes.

Managing director of cruise agency Sovereign Cruise Club, Stefan Shillito said: “It’s like the Concorde effect. That was a travel icon and the QE2 is the same ilk and people want to experience it.”

More than 60 naval vessels and private boats met the 70,000 ton ship in the Persian Gulf as she arrived in her new home.

QE2 History 2018

Following an extensive refurbishment, the iconic QE2 once again opened her doors to welcome guests on board as a luxury destination.

Now a one-of-a-kind floating hotel, her guests have the opportunity to share in her 50 years of history and heritage with guided tours to the Captain’s Bridge, Boat Deck and the Traveler’s Cove Museum, whilst simultaneously enjoying the grandeur of years gone by.

What it's like to stay on board Dubai’s QE2 – Hotel Insider

The floating hotel offers a slice of maritime history with a side of sea or skyline views.

The Queen Elizabeth 2 – better known as the QE2 – was once designated the world’s most luxurious ocean liner, a celebrity magnet that navigated some 1,419 voyages.

Built in 1967, the ship loyally carried out 39 years of service traversing more than six million nautical miles. When the historic vessel retired, it was bought by Dubai developer Nakheel. Having undergone extensive refurbishment, it is now permanently moored in the city’s Port Rashid where travellers can check in for a night or two.

The welcome

On the day we check into the hotel, it’s the coronation of King Charles III and the ship is hosting several themed events for the occasion, meaning it's busy on board.

While waiting, we explore the historical displays surrounding the ship's reception. After formalities are completed, we’re led to our upper deck Captain’s Room via an external lift and an entry platform.

The neighbourhood

Moored in Bur Dubai, the QE2’s watery home puts the ship in an ever-evolving district. In some ways, this is great, as it means there’s something new to see any time you visit, but it also means construction is often visible on the approach roads as apartments are added across the way from the distinctive funnels of the area’s prominent vintage resident.

A handful of modern superyachts flank one side of the QE2, while on the other there’s a strip of restaurants and shops, plus the visible cranes of Dubai’s Maritime City – a mixed-use development and working shipyard.

Given the surrounding construction, the drive to the QE2 isn’t all pretty, but that somehow makes the tall, narrow elegance of this classic cruise liner – which is longer than the Titanic – even more impressive.

A Captain's Room on the QE2. Photo: Accor

At one point, the lowest-priced ticket from London to New York – the QE2’s primary route before transatlantic flights forced then owner Cunard Lines to pivot her as a global voyager – cost the equivalent of three months’ average wage. Thankfully, the same level of rates don’t apply for hotel stays on the ship. Despite this, our Captain’s Room lacks neither luxury, style nor modern touches in its reasonable nightly tariff.

Set off a narrow corridor, ash wood flooring yields to block-pattern beige, grey, brown and blue carpets. Low ceiling downlighters illuminate the dark wood of the room’s wardrobe – containing a safe, mini-fridge and two robes – and the bedside units. The king-size bed faces a flat-screen TV.

Subtle Art Deco vibes come via angled marble-base lamps and a fabric-padded footstool facing one of two dress mirrors. There's a small armchair and a grey two-seat sofa with a coffee table that complements the cabin’s textured teal wallpaper. A generous walk-in, two-head shower and twin circular sinks with mirrors occupy the white marble bathroom.

The raised ceiling height confirms the cabin location as does the step-down balcony – a key original feature with wooden decking and a brace of wooden loungers that’s a prime perch from where to take in the city or waterside views.

The service

Genuine enthusiasm for their surroundings appears rife among many staff we encounter, not least our affable guide on the heritage tour (Dh85 per person). It unlocks numerous fascinating facts and many ship "secrets", including a stop on the defunct bridge.

I don’t find the QE2 the easiest hotel to, ahem, navigate, but thankfully there’s usually a member of staff nearby who's happy to assist.

The QE2 attracts guests from all over the world. Photo: Accor

The QE2 underwent careful restoration to ensure it was equipped with the comforts and facilities expected from a hotel in 2023. But this was all done with care taken not to bury the nautical stardust that once made the ship a must-have experience for moneyed globetrotters.

These days, 447 rooms and suites are on the inventory, from entry-level cabins at surprisingly competitive rates up to decadent Royal Suites, which have hosted famous faces such as Joan Collins and the late Nelson Mandela. If you’re keen to find out more about the people who have travelled on the QE2, there’s a who’s who-style wall map depicting the celebrities, political figures and other notable passengers who would have enjoyed an on-deck stroll.

Hopefully, they had better navigational skills than I do, as finding my way around proves tricky. On the upside, getting lost reveals areas of the ship still frozen in time or awaiting refurbishment. I stumble across an enclave of decommissioned gaming machines and a huge room with designated cooking areas where dining parties would previously have gathered.

The ship’s museum is called the Travellers’ Cove and recalls the QE2’s origins and adventures via books, photos, uniforms and artefacts. Deep in the hull, a small indoor pool is flanked by Technogym-equipped workout zones.

Elsewhere, beside corridors lined with photographs of the late Queen Elizabeth II , a spacious theatre is the venue for everything from Motown and comedy gigs to family pantomimes.

Afternoon tea at The Queen's Grill. Photo: Accor

Once the preserve of first-class passengers, the prestigious Queen’s Grill has been beautifully updated and is the hotel’s premium dining destination. It’s also the spot to partake in an afternoon tea of savoury bites, freshly baked scones and a selection of pastries (Dh175 per person).

Less formal, but also exhibiting hard-to-replicate vintage charm, The Golden Lion – which calls itself Dubai’s oldest bar – excels at pub grub favourites, including a commendable steak and onion sandwich (Dh75)

By stark contrast, Lido restaurant has been given the least sympathetic update, although the bright modernity is tempered at night when an international buffet (starting at Dh140 per person) includes a winning butter chicken and great desserts. It’s also where breakfast (Dh99 per person) is served. In-room dining is also available.

Highs and lows

The sheer novelty of being on board this famous ship is a highlight – and an overnight stay here is different to anything else in the UAE. The only low, if you can call it that, is the ease with which we get lost, although this is hardly a chore when something intriguing appears at almost every turn.

The insider tip

Sea views are best enjoyed from a private balcony. Photo: Accor

The rule with most hotels is the higher you go, the better the view. On the QE2, it's less about how high you are and more about having a balcony as these inevitably pair best with sea views.

The verdict

Given its history, the QE2 might resonate best with British guests but the mix of travellers on board during our stay suggests the lure of this famous vessel remains multinational. An ideal choice for those looking to diversify a city break, or for UAE residents seeking a unique staycation, although perhaps not the best choice for families with young children.

The bottom line

Rooms from Dh223 ($61) per night – based on a room-only stay in summer, including taxes. Check-in is from 3pm; checkout is at noon; www.qe2.com

Britain’s famed Queen Elizabeth 2 ship now a hotel in Dubai

Share story.

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — Britain’s famed Queen Elizabeth 2 cruise ship will finally open as a floating luxury hotel moored off Dubai, nearly a decade after completing its last ocean voyage.

It’s been another long trip for the ship known as the QE2 to even open to the public, as Dubai’s financial meltdown and years of slow growth nearly sank the project and left the ship languishing at port. After initially planning to gut the vessel, Dubai’s government ultimately decided to restore the ship at a cost of over $100 million, down to replicating its 1960s carpeting, with work still underway.

“It’s like walking into a time capsule — this is the ship in 1969. It’s a hotel and a museum,” said Hamza Mustafa, the CEO of Dubai’s Ports, Customs and Free Zone Corp.’s investment arm. “We’ve put in 2.7 million man hours working on her … making sure that she can really shine.”

“She’s going to live on for many more years now in her final home in Dubai,” he added.

The QE2, built by Cunard and put to sea in 1969, is the second ship the company named after the wife of King George VI, not the current British monarch — hence the number rather than the Roman numeral.

The luxury ship traveled some 6 million miles in decades of service even as airlines came to dominate trans-Atlantic travel. It carried 2.5 million passengers and crossed the Atlantic more than 800 times. Britain requisitioned the ship as a troop carrier for the Falklands War against Argentina in 1982.

In 2007, Cunard sold the QE2 to an arm of the state-run conglomerate Dubai World for 50 million pounds ($100 million). She arrived to Dubai’s Port Rashid the following year as part of a glitzy armada led by a mega-yacht owned by Dubai’s ruler, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, at the height of the former British protectorate’s real-estate bubble.

An economic crash left the QE2’s owners in debt for billions of dollars. Rumors circulated for years after that the ship could be sold. All the while, she sat mothballed at Port Rashid near Dubai’s historic downtown creek, a 149,000-ton reminder of the crash.

Three years ago, the Dubai government’s Ports, Customs and Free Zone Corp. took over the project. It marks the first foray into hotels for the corporation, said Mustafa, who previously served as a managing director at the government-owned developer Nakheel and at the investment arm of Dubai World. He said the corporation planned to open other hotels in the future.

The ship has been hooked up to Dubai’s power grid, but still floats in the Persian Gulf. An Associated Press team that visited the ship Tuesday could feel her list slightly while walking through portions of her completed passageways.

“She lists. She’s supposed to that, she’s a ship,” Mustafa said.

Today, around seven of the QE2’s 13 decks are under operation, with 224 cabins available, Mustafa said. Prices will range from $150 a night in the simplest berthing to $15,000 a night for the Queen Elizabeth and Queen Mary suites, he said.

A green-hued British pub and other restaurants will serve alcohol, a common practice across Dubai’s hotels. However, its nickel, quarter and dollar slot machines will remain turned off as gambling is illegal.

The ship also will feature shops run by Dubai Duty Free, the government-run conglomerate that had $1.93 billion of sales in 2017, with 9.7 million cans of beer and 7.4 million bottles of liquor and wine sold.

Workers hurried across the ship Tuesday to finish up work ahead of the hotel’s soft opening Wednesday. By October, Mustafa said the hotel hopes to have a grand opening with “600 to 800 rooms” ready.

“If you want to come and have a sense of how it was during the ocean liner era but at the same time being a doorstep away from Dubai, this is the place you want to be,” he said. “We’re not a theme. We’re not a concept. This is what this ship was.”

It’s a hotel and a museum,” said Hamza Mustafa, the CEO of Dubai’s Ports, Customs and Free Zone Corp.'s investment arm. “We’ve put in 2.7 million man hours working on her ... making sure that she can really shine.”

Britain's Queen Elizabeth 2 arrives in Dubai

Emirates Queen Elizabeth 2

Britain's most famous luxury cruise ship, the Queen Elizabeth 2, arrived in Dubai on Wednesday where it will turn into a floating hotel moored off an artificial palm-shaped island.

More than 60 naval vessels and private boats, led by a mega-yacht owned by Dubai's ruler, met the 70,000 ton ship in the Persian Gulf on Wednesday. In the city's Rashid port, the legendary cruise ship was greeted by a police marching band and fireworks.

In 40 years at sea, the luxury liner has traveled 6 million miles, carried 2.5 million passengers and crossed the Atlantic more than 800 times.

"For QE2, we believe that life really does begin at 40," said Manfred Ursprunger, the chief executive of Nakheel's QE2 Enterprises, which is in charge of the ship's transformation.

Ursprunger said it will take two to three years to redesign the ship and make it into a hotel with dozens of rooms, several restaurants, a performance theater and a spa.

Some of the cruiser's famous quarters, like The Queen's Room, The Captain's Quarters and The Bridge will be preserved in their original form.

The ship's owner, Cunard, sold QE2 last year to state-run conglomerate Dubai World for about $100 million.

Nakheel, a Dubai-based developer and part of Dubai World, plans to dock QE2 along Dubai's artificial palm-shaped island.

Queen Elizabeth II launched the QE2 in 1967 and it went into service two years later. In 1982, it was requisitioned as a troop carrier for the Falklands War that Britain fought against Argentina.

QE2 left Southampton, U.K. on Nov. 11 for her last journey to Dubai. It sailed for 16 days to its retirement spot in the Gulf via Lisbon, Rome and the Egyptian port of Alexandria.

On Thursday, Cunard will formally handover the ship's ownership to Nakheel.
