Tunisia Discovery, Small Group Tour

My Tunisia trip booked through Tourradar was fantastic! The itinerary was rich and diverse, allowing us to experience different natural landscapes such as the desert, forests, and the sea, as well as immersing ourselves in Tunisia's rich cultural and historical heritage. Our guide, Ferri, provided thorough explanations throughout the journey, with particularly vivid descriptions of the exhibits at the Bardo Museum, showcasing Tunisia's ancient history across different periods. One of the most unforgettable highlights was our driver, Ali. He was the sweetest and most attentive driver I've ever encountered. Despite being 65 years old, Ali effortlessly navigated through the desert and in the cities. Not only did he assist with luggage every day, but he also ensured our safety by providing thoughtful reminders and guidance along the way. Ali would remind us to change shoes, help adjust clothing, and his presence significantly enhanced the joy of our journey.

Ms. Ekbel of Tunisie Voyages is an excellent agent who has helped us on many issues with extra miles to support our tour and make sure we have fully enjoyed the journey! We are absolutely 100% satisfied with her performance! The driver was also excellent to help take care of us during the journey. The tour guide Nidhal Kacem has tried his best to help us, though sometimes there were miscommunications due to his strong accent in English. I strongly recommend this tourist agency!

Overall it was a good experience and surprisingly Tunisia had a lot to.offer. Tour guide and driver were both good. The prog had 2 nights in a place where we really had nothing to do. That would have been better spent in Sousse - the extra day. Another option offered could be a wine tasting tour. The desert on camel and horse cart was just not my thing. Food was ok but a bit monotonous and hotels were quite good. Its a pity that all the hotels did not come with an electric kettle to have coffee in the room. The other thing that made it uncomfortable was having 3 people sit at the back of the transport that made it tight. In the end we all caught a cold from each other as we wete do close together. Overall it was a good tour. This is the first time I am using tour radar.

Immersive Tunisia, Small Group Tour Tour

Immersive Tunisia, Small Group Tour

Immersive Tunisia is ideal for those who want to have a good look at the country's grand historical sites. The tour was very well organised by Tunisie Voyages. Our guide was a mine of information and was responsive to our wishes. Our driver moved us around swiftly, safely and with great courtesy. The standard of food and accommodation was good throughout. I highly recommend both Tunisia and the tour.

The Best of Tunisia & All-inclusive Beach Extension (Stay connected), Small Group Tour

Ann and I had a fabulous time. Radwan and Jamal picked us up at the airport. We saw some amazing sites over the next four days from Berber living quarters to Roman and Punic ruins (including the largest Roman city in Africa). Those first four days were packed from pre-dawn to evening. Radwan was really an amazing tour guide. He was at the top of his college class and chose to become a tour guide because of his pride in his country and the desire to tell others the story. Jamal was an excellent driver. He knew exactly where to go and how to get there quickly and safely. The last four days were relaxing at a 5-star resort, and it was the perfect way to rest and recover before heading home. One quick note, many of our friends were concerned about safety in Tunisia, and I can say honestly that Ann and I felt completely safe the whole time we were there. The people of Tunisia were welcoming and friendly. The last four days we went on foot all over the local city and enjoyed the people and the culture. I give this tour my highest recommendation.

Tunisia is a fantastic collection of culture, architectural sites and filled with history. I was alone on this tour adding some flexibility but also complications. I do recommend Tunisia, you won’t be disappointed.

What people love about Tunisia Tours

The tour was very interesting and versatile, well organized
Good tour covering key attractions in Tunisia. Could have been excellent if Tatouine (Yes, it is a real place in Tunisia and inspired George Lucas to use that name in Star Wars!) were included in the itinerary as it has very unique buildings (warehouses) that warrant a visit. There are gaps in the program especially the first day that could accommodate this attraction with some juggling.
Overall excellent, with all the elements that make a successful tour: *Strong itinerary with good timing and efficient transits. Covered all important sites. *Itinerary delivered exactly as listed with all the inclusions clear *Very knowledgeable and personable guide and great driver, always on time and helpful *Hotels and meals were good and varied

TOUR DE TUNISIE 2023

tour de tunisie 2023

08 May TOUR DE TUNISIE 2023

To better tackle the Tour de Tunisie , scheduled from 7 to 17 April, I chose from the Blue Room the car of a brand that is very popular and appreciated in Africa, Mercedes Benz , specifically an iconic spider, the 450 SL – the elegant car driven by Richard Gere in American Gigolo .

The Tour de Tunisie, organized by the Veteran Car Club Panormus of Palermo and by CTF Unconventional of Trapani, is a tourist raid for classic cars and youngtimers.

The departure was set for the 7th evening from the port of Civitavecchia; a stop in Palermo the following day, for the embarkation of the other crews, and a further day of navigation to reach the port of La Goulette.

The day after we started officially our tour: we passed from the languid atmospheres of Hammamet to the lively ones of the medina of Sousse , to move to the more peaceful El Djem and admire its Roman amphitheater.

An overnight stop in the chaotic Sfax , Tunisia’s second city, and departure for Médenine to visit the ghorfas , the ancient Berber granaries, one of the most interesting stops on the tour; arrival in the evening on the island of Djerba along the ancient Roman road.

The following day is dedicated to the discovery of the island: boat tour with typical lunch on the beach, visit of the capital Houmt Souk and Er Riadh , the neighboring village decorated with 250 murals created in 2014 by some of the best international street artists during the Djerbahood event.

After the sea, the desert: we set off again for Douz , after a journey through majestic mountain panoramas we stopped in Matmata to visit the troglodyte houses dug into the ground; the truly remarkable place was chosen as the set for the fourth episode of the Star Wars saga.

Tozeur was our next stop: we visited its historic centre, reserving more time for the nearby oasis of Chebica which, after a short trek up the hill, appears from above like a green mirage in the sand.

If you already breathed a certain mysticism in Tozeur, it is nothing compared to Kairouan , the spiritual capital of Tunisia. The visit to the mosque and the medina was another highlight of the trip.

The following day, that of the return, the sea conditions made us extend the itinerary with a further stop in the beautiful Hammamet , of which we were able to deepen our knowledge.

The GNV ferry was waiting for us punctually the following afternoon in La Goulette: having said goodbye first to the Palermo crews and then to the “continental” ones, I returned to Brescia bringing home many pleasant memories. Of the places we visited, certainly (deserts of sand, rock and salt whipped by the wind, oases and varied architecture), but also of the spontaneous cordiality of my travel companions and the tireless professionalism of the organizers and guides: thanks Giovy, Pino, Andrea, Patrizia, Sami and Imen for making our trip so pleasant (and thanks also to my Mercedes 450 SL, which covered three thousand two hundred kilometers in ten days without hesitation).

Tunisia tours & holidays

Kairouan Great Mosque inner courtyard walls , Tunisia

Straddling Africa and the Middle East, this once-overlooked Mediterranean gem is well and truly back on the map

From the sun-drenched beaches of the north to the lunar-like desert of the south – and all the caves, mountains and palm-fringed oases in between – Tunisia has a unique allure. It’s not often you can clock Roman ruins this grand, get lost in a maze of medinas and learn age-old pastry recipes with a beloved local baker in their home. Many people think of Tunisia as a seaside holiday destination, and while its glittering Mediterranean beaches are definitely something to write home about, there’s so much more to discover in this diverse country.

Learn more about Tunisia

Best time to visit tunisia.

Tunisia boasts a Mediterranean climate in the north and an arid, desert-like climate in the south. The busiest months are July and August when the hot weather draws tourists to the beaches.

The coldest and wettest months are January and February, although the average rainfall for this period is still relatively low; many interior Saharan regions of Tunisia don't see rainfall for years.

March to May is a great time to visit as it's less crowded, the temperatures are cooler and the scenery is spectacular. November is considered the optimal time for trekking in the desert.

You may also want to factor in the holy month of Ramadan (the dates of which change yearly). T ravelling during Ramadan presents benefits and challenges as many restaurants close and business hours can be interrupted. That said, it's a great opportunity to learn about the local culture and customs.

Culture and customs

Tunisia is an Arabic country with a strong sense of history and tradition, yet a good dose of modernity. The overwhelming majority are Arabic-speaking Muslims; nine in ten Tunisians are Amazigh (Berber), with the remainder a mix of European, African and Arab peoples.

These days social and political life in Tunisia is mostly secular. Since the Arab Spring – a region-wide revolutionary movement sparked in 2010 by the Tunisian Revolution – the Tunisians have enjoyed more religious and social freedom and greater democracy. Still, when travelling, it’s important to keep in mind the country’s Islamic culture. If Ramadan is on, be careful not to drink or smoke in the public presence of those practising it.

Family is an important part of Tunisian life and a good topic of conversation when meeting new acquaintances. Wearing a headscarf is not necessary for women travelling in Tunisia (unless visiting mosques), but it pays to dress conservatively. Language-wise, French and Arabic are the officials, but English is increasingly prevalent – children are nowadays taught it at school.

Eating and drinking

Tunisian cuisine is a mix of Mediterranean, French, Italian, Turkish and Amazigh (Berber) influences. Seafood is popular in coastal areas in the north, while hearty regional classics like shakshouka (baked eggs in tomato) are common all over.

Two major staples of Tunisian cuisine are harissa (a spicy chilli paste made with coriander and caraway seeds) and couscous (buttery semolina granules) which are also popular in neighbouring countries like Morocco.

Must-try foods in Tunisia

Translating to couscous, this is Tunisia's national dish. The Amazigh people are thought to have created it as far back as the 3rd century. A simple yet delicious plate of seasoned couscous is usually accompanied by baked vegetables and chickpeas, or by beef, lamb or chicken.

2. Brik pastry

Brik, or 'brick', pastry comes in sweet and savoury forms, but you'll likely stumble on the egg and meat-filled kind first. Though its name may suggest otherwise, the dough is relatively thin and delicate. You'll find this snack at street stalls across the country.

Not to be confused with the Moroccan version (that’s very different), Tunisian tajine is similar to a quiche or frittata – more of a European-style finger food. Typical ingredients are onions, spices and ground meat, all held together with egg and breadcrumbs and flavoured with herbs and spices.

A fantastic option for vegetarians, lablabi is a hearty chickpea soup with liberal doses of cumin and coriander. Tuna or egg are sometimes added for extra punch, and some harissa doesn’t go astray. Capers or chopped almonds sometimes top the dish off.

5. Bambalouni (Tunisian doughnut)

Sweet toothed-travellers shouldn’t miss the ‘yo-yo’, also known as a bambalouni, or simply Tunisian doughnut. Deep fried, but with the subtlety of so many other sweets from the region, it’s often lightly flavoured by rose water, orange blossom or lemon.

Geography and environment

Sandwiched between Libya and Algeria, Tunisia benefits from its location on the Mediterranean Coast. The south is characterised by arid plains and desert, which give way to rolling hills and fertile areas prime for cultivation in the north.

With a coastline along the Mediterranean Sea, Tunisia has plenty of white sand beaches that are popular with swimmers, surfers and divers. Tunisia's capital and largest city, Tunis, is mostly modern in design, except for the old medieval medina in the middle of town.

Tunisia is a treat for those who love to haggle the North African way. The country has many souqs and medinas where you can get a great price on local and authentic items. Shop for endemic spices, blown-glass perfume bottles, traditional ceramics and more.

You may like to purchase a Tunisian rug, which will be truly evocative of your stay in the region. Kairouan is a particularly good place to shop for a rug. Just look out for the ONAT (Office National de l’Artisanat Tunisien) stamp of approval on the back of your rug before you buy it to ensure it’s authentic.

A traditional Arabic shisha, also known as a hookah, is also worth considering as a souvenir. It’s the apparatus used to smoke the characteristic flavoured tobacco of the Middle East . It’s not for everyone, of course, but travellers are known to buy them for their aesthetic qualities alone.

Festivals and events

International festival of sousse.

This three-week festival brings together a miscellanea of arts from across the country. See performances, eat African cuisine and enjoy the biggest carnival parade in Africa .

Festival of the Sahara

Held in Douz in the heart of the namesake desert, Festival of the Sahara started as a Bedouin marriage market but became a full-blown celebration of arts, culture and sports in the region. There’s delicious food, military parades, greyhound racing and much more.

Ulysses Festival

The legendary Greek king Ulysses is said to have immortalised the island of Djerba when he visited thousands of years ago. The island hosts this festival every year with cultural events and performances from across the Mediterranean.

Tunisia travel faqs, do i need a covid-19 vaccine to join an intrepid trip.

Trips from 1 January 2023 onwards

From 1 January 2023, Intrepid will no longer require travellers to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19 (excluding all Polar trips and select adventure cruises).

However, we continue to strongly recommend that all Intrepid travellers and leaders get vaccinated to protect themselves and others.

Specific proof of testing or vaccination may still be required by your destination or airline. Please ensure you check travel and entry requirements carefully.

Do I need a visa to travel to Tunisia?

Visas are the responsibility of the individual traveller. Entry requirements can change at any time, so it's important that you check for the latest information.

You can check the entry requirements for your nationality on your government's foreign travel advisories, consular websites or  on our visa and entry requirements page.

Is tipping customary in Tunisia?

Tipping in Tunisia is discretionary but expected by most service workers. Drivers, waiters, porters, baristas and hotel staff will generally expect a small tip for serving you at a restaurant, showing you to your room or carrying your bags. We recommend setting aside some dinars for this.

What is the internet access like in Tunisia?

Most hotels, restaurants and bars offer wi-fi, particularly in large cities and resorts along the coast, but it may be harder to find in more remote areas.

Can I use my mobile phone while in Tunisia?

Mobile phone coverage is generally good in Tunisia, especially in large cities. Coverage may not be available in more remote areas, especially if travelling through the desert. Ensure you have global roaming activated with your mobile carrier before you leave home if you wish to use your mobile while in Tunisia.

What are the toilets like in Tunisia?

You'll have to adjust to different standards of hygiene and sanitation while in Tunisia. The standard toilet in Tunisia (and throughout much of Africa) is of the squat variety and this may take some getting used to, although western-style toilets can be found in some hotels and tourist areas.

Public toilets are often equipped with just a hose, so you may want to carry a packet of tissues and hand sanitiser with you.

What will it cost for a… ?

  • Cup of coffee in a coffeehouse = 3-4 TND
  • Street food snack = 2-3 TND
  • Basic lunch at a cafe = 6-10 TND
  • Dinner in a mid-range restaurant = 20-30 TND

Can I drink the water in Tunisia?

Exercise caution when drinking water in Tunisia. For environmental reasons, try to avoid buying bottled water. Instead, fill a reusable water bottle or canteen with filtered water. Ask your leader where filtered water can be found as some hotels we stay in may have drinking water available.

What is ATM access like in Tunisia?

ATMs can be found in large cities like Tunis but are less common in rural areas and smaller towns. It’s best to carry plenty of cash with you if you’re travelling out of the city.

What public holidays are celebrated in Tunisia?

  • 1 Jan: New Year’s Day
  • 20 Mar: Independence Day
  • 21 Mar: Youth Day
  • 9 Apr: Martyrs' Day
  • 1 May: Labour Day
  • 25 Jul: Republic Day
  • Eid al-Fitr (End of Ramadan)*
  • 13 Aug: Women's Day
  • 7 Nov: New Era Day
  • Mawlid (Birth of the Prophet Muhammad)*

*Please note these dates may vary.  See the current list of public holidays in Tunisia .

Are credit cards accepted widely in Tunisia?

Major credit cards are usually accepted by large hotels and shops in cities and tourist areas, but are less commonly accepted by smaller vendors, in remote towns and rural areas. Ensure you carry enough cash for dinners, coffee and smaller purchases since credit cards aren't always an option in Tunisia.

Is Tunisia a safe destination for LGBTQIA+ travellers?

Homosexuality is illegal in Tunisia and can be punishable by imprisonment. We recommend that LGBTQIA+ travellers carefully consider the risks of travelling to Tunisia and refer to your government’s foreign travel advisories.  Equaldex  and  ILGA  are other useful resources for LGBTQIA+ travellers.

Intrepid is aware of Tunisia’s legislation affecting LGBTQIA+ people – as a company these discriminatory laws do not reflect our values and we stand in solidarity with LGBTQIA+ travellers all over the world.

Intrepid Travel will continue to strive to build an inclusive company for our people and our customers, while continuing to support the vital contribution that tourism makes for local communities in Tunisia.

Does my trip support The Intrepid Foundation?

Yes, all Intrepid trips support the Intrepid Foundation. Trips to this country directly support our global Intrepid Foundation partners Eden Reforestation Projects and World Bicycle Relief. Intrepid will double the impact by dollar-matching all post-trip donations made to The Intrepid Foundation.

Eden Reforestation Projects

On y vient ; on y revient.

Tour de France 2023: our selection of the most beautiful mountain stages

Inspiration

Cycling Tourism Nature and Outdoor Activities Sporting Activities Mountains

Reading time: 0 min Published on 4 December 2023, updated on 15 April 2024

The most famous cycle race in the world, the Tour de France will be taking to the skies once again this year, as the 3,404km and 21 stages will take in all 5 of France's mountain ranges! The Pyrenees, the Auvergne volcanoes, the Jura mountains, the Alps and the Vosges massif... The peloton has plenty of pedalling to do and plenty of climbing to do. The grandiose landscapes, the high altitude finishes and the dizzying descents promise to be emotional highs. To experience the highs (and lows) of the Grand Loop, saddle up with our selection of the most beautiful mountain stages.

From Tarbes to Cauterets-Cambasque, the Pyrenees take centre stage

After 3 stages on the Spanish side, welcome to the French Pyrenees! First there's Bayonne and the Basque country, Dax and its thermal baths, Pau and its beautiful castle where King Henry IV was born. And then there's Tarbes, with its breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains, its palm-lined streets (yes, yes!) and its gourmet markets. The riders of the 2023 Tour de France will need a lot of courage to tear themselves away from this gentle way of life and tackle the climbs of the Aspin and terrible Tourmalet cols . The reward for all this climbing is a finish on the Cambasque plateau, overlooking the charming resort of Cauterets, in the heart of the Pyrenees National Park, where the Pic du Midi is enthroned. Want to cool off? Try the hike to the peaceful Lac d'Ilhéou . In a green setting with magnificent views and waterfalls, picnics and swimming...

The Puy de Dôme, a feast for the eyes in Auvergne

The ascent of Puy de Dôme, the undisputed star of the Auvergne, will be one of the highlights of the 2023 Tour de France! The youngest and highest volcano in the Puys chain has not featured on the itinerary for 35 years. Taking on this fearsome and majestic peak and finishing with a 360° view over the gentle rolling hills of the Parc naturel régional des Volcans d'Auvergne is sure to motivate many a rider! But did you know that you can also climb this peaceful giant by mule track or on board the Panoramique des Dômes, a picturesque little cogwheel train? In just 15 minutes, you'll be transported to an altitude of 1,465 m, with the 80 volcanoes of the Puy range and the Limagne fault (listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site at your feet. To complete a stage that's full of fireworks, the Vulcania Park is not far away! Who can beat that?

Breathtaking escapes in the Jura

Expect to fall under the spell of Châtillon-sur-Chalaronne! Just 1 hour from Lyon and the Monts du Beaujolais, this small town in the Ain département, from which the Tour de France 2023 peloton will set off on 14 July, is a delightful medieval town. With its pink stone houses, flower-bedecked bridges and old market hall housing one of France's most popular traditional markets, it is also the gateway to the Dombes region, a paradise for fish farmers and birdwatchers with its landscapes of water and ponds. Take advantage of this area on foot, by boat or, ideally, by bike (it's flat!), before taking to the heights of the Montagnes du Jura , just a stone's throw away. The Pyramide du Bugey, from the top of which you can see Mont Blanc and Lake Geneva, is a must-see. The Tour de France riders attack it via the Col du Grand Colombier. At top speed. Take your time, the panorama is well worth it!

In the Alps, between lakes and legendary passes

It's doubtful that the riders will enjoy the view of Lake Geneva as they take their first pedal to the metal in the Alps at Annemasse on stage 14 of the Tour de France 2023. We recommend this one, though, as well as the view of Lake Annecy and its turquoise waters. Then it's time for a series of twists and turns and climbs to the legendary passes of the Alps, including the famous Col du Feu, an unprecedented climb for the peloton. At an altitude of 1,000 metres, in the heart of the Portes du Soleil ski area, the stage finish in Morzine won't dampen the spirits of those who love nature. In summer, the little village resort in the Alps is an ideal playground for lovers of outdoor activities : a stroll along the Dérêches river, swimming in Lake Montriond, canyoning or via ferrata... the hardest thing will be to choose.

From Gets to Saint-Gervais, Mont Blanc in your sights

For the first time since its creation, the Tour de France will start from Les Gets. Well-known to mountain bikers (the World Championships were held there in 2022), the pretty Alpine resort will kick off a 15th stage during which you'll need to have plenty of breath. The Col de la Forclaz-Montmin is on the programme. So allow yourself a break at its belvedere for a bird's-eye view of Lake Annecy before setting off again for Saint-Gervais, at the foot of Mont-Blanc. If you want to reach the highest peak in the Alps, this village resort, with its well-preserved heritage and traditions, is the ideal place to stop. And its thermal baths, renowned for the many benefits of their waters, set the well-being at the summit in a magnificent green setting.

Courchevel, star of the Alps

The regulars call it Courch' and they come and go summer and winter as connoisseurs, just like the Tour de France caravan which is visiting the Savoyard resort for the 4th time. Welcome to the pinnacle of top-of-the-range skiing in the Alps, at the heart of the Three Valleys ski area. Courchevel tops the list not only for the size of its ski area (Méribel and Val Thorens are its famous neighbours) but also for its range of hotels (no fewer than 5 mountain palaces , from the Apogée to the Cheval Blanc, not forgetting the K2 Palace, Airelles and the Hôtel Barrière Les Neiges) and restaurants. So, with its 6 hamlets and the surrounding area, the resort has a lot to offer. Take a selfie at the top of La Saulire, take a stroll down to Lac de la Rosière, cycle down the Bike Park, spend the night in the Lacs Merlet refuge or hike through the heart of the Vallée des Avals... You're going to love it!

Full steam ahead in the Vosges

Between the Lorraine plateau and the Alsace plain, the Vosges massif lives up to its reputation: a perfect blend of nature, wide open spaces, traditions and local produce, crafts and fine cheeses. Between the Grand Ballon d'Alsace and the Petit Ballon, via the famous Col de la Schlucht, the Tour de France 2023 will be taking a break from the normality of the mountains, with a new finish on the slopes of the Markstein, in the welcoming family resort of Marlstein Fellering. In the heart of the Ballons des Vosges Regional Nature Park , you can enjoy bucolic hikes, tobogganing in the mountain pastures, paragliding with a view, and mountain biking (or mountain bikes) in a landscape of absolute serenity. And for those with a sweet tooth, July is the peak of blueberry season (and the season for tarts in the farm inns).

And (finally) Paris.... and the Olympics!

Will the riders be in Olympic form for the triumphant finish on the Champs-Elysées on 23 July 2023? Just one year ahead of the 2024 Olympics in Paris , the route will certainly provide a magnificent prologue to the sporting event. Starting in Saint-Quentin en Yvelines, all the future Olympic venues in the Yvelines département will be on the peloton's final route. A gigantic loop will join the Colline d'Elancourt (where the mountain bike events will take place), the Golf National in Guyancourt and the Château de Versailles , which will host the equestrian events and part of the modern pentathlon competitions.
