What an incredible trip. The scenery, the wildlife viewing and the people all combine to make a fabulous itinerary. We were incredibly lucky with the wildlife from the very start, with the Big 5 achieved between the Masai Mara and Lake Nakuru, along with five cheetah, lions, baby giraffe, elephants, zebra and so much more. We were incredibly lucky with the boat trip in Queen Elizabeth NP, getting to spend time watching two herds of elephants, both with babies, come down to the water's edge to drink. The whitewater rafting in Jinja was intense but absolutely brilliant and the safety was top notch. There are options on the rafting for how intense you want the experience - our group did the highest class available and spent a fair bit of time in the water, but it was such a fun activity. The chimp trekking in Budongo was on relatively easy paths, with only the last 5-10mins being properly 'off-track'. The chimps stayed up in the trees, however we still had a great viewing, with a young chimp playing around and giving some fabulous poses and facial experiences. Beware of the chimps throwing things down at you - they are surprisingly accurate with their aim! The gorilla trekking is everything you imagine and more. It is impossible to predict how far or how hard your walk will be, so go prepared for a tough hike. Our group had around an hour of reasonable hiking on established tracks, followed by around 30-40 mins of full scrambling up and down a steep ravine as the gorillas moved away in search of a different food source. Once the gorillas had re-settled, we were able to spend the hour with the whole family, from the massive silverback to the playful adolescents and the relaxing females. The trackers are awesome and the gorillas showed no signs of being even remotely bothered by our presence, coming up towards us and playing / posing for photos near by. As other reviewers have previously mentioned, there are lots of early mornings, but you soon adjust and, as this is when the wildlife is most active, it is definitely worth it. The campsites were generally of a very good standard. We had a slight issue with very late and loud music at the Jinja camp (take earplugs), and one campsite did not have working showers when we were there, but as this was one night only it really did not have a big impact. Most of the facilities were good and some were excellent (lovely hot showers), but really this trip is not about the accommodation - with good food (thanks Ken!) and great company, you really do not need luxury and the experience of waking up to the sounds of baboons and hyena made everything worthwhile. The Exodus tents and mattresses are good quality and well cared for, and there were plenty of opportunities for upgrades if you wanted a break from camping.

An amazing trip with so many memorable moments, seeing all the big cats, black and a white rhino, herds off elephants and the boat trip along the Nile. Crossing the Ugandan border was an experience in itself with so many checks and the officers wanting "gifts" from us. The campsites are not what you might expect and quite often the showers were cold water and only one to share between you. Unfortunately most of the group and staff became ill in the second week of the trip, this really dampened the spirts of everyone and it was hard with everyone feeling bad. The food was not too my liking so I stuck to peanut butter sandwiches but Wilson did try his hardest to keep me fed but I will say that everyone else seemed to enjoy his cooking. We were a mixed group of ages but it was great how we all got on so well together as this could make or break a trip. The 4 guys that took care of us were amazing and so helpful and friendly. Really loved this trip but be prepared to rough it and definitely get a porter for the Gorilla trek as believe me you will need one.

If there is a Rwanda safari that brings you any closer, on foot, to wild; O ne second you are bushwhacking through thickets of bamboo in Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park , pulling yourself up a steep lava slope, toehold to toehold. The next, you turn a corner and sunlight streams through the canopy to illuminate a matted clump of black against a curtain of rain forest green. You’ve known this was coming and still you gasp. Seated perhaps 30 feet away is one of the roughly 1000 mountain gorillas remaining , a saggy-breasted female, and soon you see that she is cradling an infant in her lap. She wraps one arm around the 6-month-old while scratching her own ear with an extended index finger.

For a great Rwanda gorilla trekking experience ,  you need to be fairly fit, equipped for the humid, muddy conditions of a rainforest hike, and in good health – mountain gorillas in Rwanda are susceptible to human illnesses but don’t have our immunity, which means a common cold can be deadly to a whole family of gorillas and you won’t be permitted to trek if you are unwell . Even in the dry season, the rainforest is a challenging environment: it’s humid, wet and muddy with some steep slopes, plenty of insects and thick vegetation. It is absolutely worth the effort to spend time with gorillas in the wild, but be prepared to exert yourself on the trek.

With the mountain gorillas in Rwanda , which share 98 percent of our DNA, we look into a mirror, and they are looking impassively back.

Things to Consider when choosing at tour Operator in Rwanda

There are many factors to consider when choosing the right tour company to use for your safari in Rwanda. They include: –

Website: Does the tour company have a website? Check if they have an About Us page and how long they have been in operation. What is their motivation? The company must be able to manage all aspects of your tour especially if it involves a safari in more than one country.

Ownership: The ownership of a tour company should not really matter. That side, there are some who think that international brands offer the best services. While this may be true for some companies, our experience shows that many of the local tour operators in Rwanda can offer the same level of quality and at a reduced price. Many of the international tour companies actually use local tour operators to manage their safaris. Whereas international companies may guarantee absolute quality of services, you can support and empower the local people by choosing their companies.

Company Banking Information: Before booking with any tour company, ensure that they have a bank account in their name. Having a company bank account is a sign that the company is registered. Do not send money to individual bank accounts. Some companies may provide you with the option of paying by Credit cards through a system like Pesapal. Ensure that it is a company Pesapal account. Avoid using Money transfer services like World Remit, Money Gram or Western Union when making payments for your trip unless you have traveled with the company before.

Reviews from past clients: What do other travelers say about the tour company? Do they have reviews on google and TripAdvisor? If you have doubts about the online reviews, ask for contact details of past travelers – preferably travelers from your own country.

Group Size: As an elder, you may want more privacy or not be comfortable around partying teenagers for days. Young travelers may also feel out of place or bored if in the company of a bus full of only seniors. Other travelers prefer private tours in order to learn more from the Guides about the destinations. Group tours are excellent for travelers who wish to meet new people and have fun. Your tour operator must therefore confirm if it is going to be a private or group tour. If you want to join a group, let it be known in advance because most of the tour operators organize private tours.

Safety Precautions in place: A good safari company must have measures in place to protect travelers. Such measures may include but is not limited to having speed limits, ensuring that client luggage is protected at all times, following park rules regarding game drives and not exposing travelers to unsafe places or wrong people.

Membership to local Tour Organizations: Although membership to specific country tourism association is not a requirement or a guarantee of quality, it still helps you gauge the reputation of the tour company in Rwanda.

Giving back to the Community: Does the company use some of its profits for the benefit of the community? If you want to ensure that part of your money goes to support the local community, book with a company involved in wildlife conservation, Eco-tourism or general philanthropy.

Tour Guides and Drivers: A tour Guide or company driver can make or break a trip. Remember that Tour Guides/Drivers will be the representative of the tour operator and go with you to all the destinations. As the Tour driver to provide a Driver/guide who is experience, knowledgeable and can speak a language you understand. The Guide/Driver must be experienced, pleasant and used to dealing with international travelers. Itinerary: A good tour operator will provide an itinerary that is as complete as possible but also flexible. By flexibility we mean the ability to modify it so that it is in line with the activities you are interested in. You the travelers should be the one to make the final decision regarding what activities are included based on the recommendations of the tour operator.

It’s not always the case that whoever starts up a travel company in Rwanda is inexperienced or unprofessional. Sometimes, you’ll actually get the best services from a tour operator with less or no reviews.

Even the biggest Rwanda tour operators started somewhere and actually at one point had no single review. So I find in odd for tourists to judge Rwanda safari companies by the number of reviews that they have.

Some new travel agencies are actually owned by tour consultants who worked for big operators or rather travel guides who have been guided for long. These two people are well decorated when it comes to knowledge about tourism in Rwanda and experience.

You can rely on them for authentic safari services. The only problem is citing out which new Tour Company is likely to deliver to your expectations. Still, I’ll guide you through this. It’s not really hard to cite them out.

During your initial conversation with them, you should be able to tell which company has more knowledge over the rest. These factors are way exposed that you think. If you’ve carried out thorough research, you won’t be new to any email exchange conversations you might have about your safari to Rwanda.

Experience of Rwanda travel companies

Does experience of Rwanda tour companies matter when it comes to organizing the best safaris in Rwanda? Well, I’d say experiences matters in all aspects of life. Regarding tourism in Rwanda, I’ll look at experience from four paradigms.

As mentioned earlier, a company can be new but the people behind it can be more experienced that some of the companies that have been running for a couple of years. The first paradigm is the fact that travel consultants can open up their own safari companies at some point in life.

Second is tour guides owning companies as well.

Third is the actual companies that have been running for years and have great reviews and lastly, the entrepreneurs who join tourism without any experience and hope to grow.

As you can see, a new company with less or no reviews can still be a great option for a safari in Rwanda. Sounds awkward but true.

I have personally encountered this before. I inquired with several Rwanda tour companies and ended up booking with a company with very few reviews (less than five) but still got the best experience I could ever imagine. The agency was owned by a former travel guide who’d been in the industry for over 13 years.

Foreign vs domestic tour operators in Rwanda

There is a very big debate on booking Rwanda safaris with Ugandan based or domestic tour operators in Rwanda. As a matter of fact, Uganda and Rwanda tour operators operate in both countries and still manage to maintain affordable rates.

In some cases, Rwanda tour companies will partner with a Ugandan company to handle their trips from here and vice-versa. And as of now, so many Ugandan based travel companies operate in Rwanda. It could be Rwandan trips, Uganda safaris from Kigali or rather combined holidays. So when planning a safari to Rwanda, you should book with operators in either countries or vice-versa.

Gorilla Tourism in Rwanda

Gorilla tourism is the face of the Rwanda Tourism Industry. Most safaris that happen here take place on Volcanoes National Park in Musanze (Formerly called Ruhengeri).

Volcanoes National Park is approximately 2 hours way from Kigali City, the main entry point for tourists to Rwanda. Rwanda is the second best gorilla trekking destination in the world after Uganda.

It offers a very impressive experience with mountain gorillas in their natural habitat. When it comes to luxury gorilla tourism, Rwanda leads the way and Uganda follows.

National Parks in Rwanda

Considering its size, Rwanda doesn’t have so many protected areas. Rwanda has abundance in three national parks and 1 forest reserve. These parks include Akagera National Park, Volcanoes National Park and Nyungwe Forest National Park.

Akagera National Park is located in the eastern province of Rwanda whereas Volcanoes National Park is located in the northern province of Rwanda and Nyungwe Forest National Park is located in the southern province of Rwanda.

One advantage Rwanda has over other destinations is; their main attractions are not so far away from each other. You can still visit all of them with less fatigue.

Akagera National Park

Despite Akagera National Park being Rwanda’s only Savannah national park, it’s a great place for wildlife viewing, birding and boat tours. All the big five game animals; Elephants, Cape Buffaloes, Lions, Leopards and Rhinoceros are found in Akagera.

When visiting, you should know that the best game viewing experiences are carried out from the northern sector of the park. The barely no animals in the south and that’s where you’ll carry out your boat cruise from.

Three to four days should be just enough to explore Akagera National Park. If you want more spice to your adventure, consider wild camping. It’s awesome.

Volcanoes National Park

Volcanoes National Park is not only the most popular national park in Rwanda but also the most visited and diverse attraction. It is located in the northern province of the country and is the only place where you can see mountain gorillas in Rwanda.

Besides gorilla tourism, there are several other activities to carry out in this particular park and some of these include golden monkey trekking, mountain hiking, twin lakes visit, nature hikes, and cultural experience at Iby’Iwacu Cultural Village, scenic tours, Dian Fossey grave hiking and heritage tours among the rest.

Nyungwe Forest National Park

Down south of Rwanda is Nyungwe Forest National Park ; a place where humans meet chimpanzees in the world. Nyunge Forest National Park is famously known for chimpanzee trekking safaris, and this is because very few take time to explore the park in detail.

Nyungwe Forest offers some of the best nature hikes in Africa. The forest is thick, dense and misty with great scenery. Hiking here is something you’d die for. Hikers should also carry out the Canopy Walk and explore the park from a bird’s eye view.

When you visit Nyungwe, you will see so many tea plantations. The neighborhood is so green and natural. You’ll fall in love with it.

Best time to visit Rwanda for a Safari

Visiting Rwanda between June through September and December through February should guarantee you the best weather condition possible for your safari. Rwanda is a very cold country and visiting during the wet season might limit your activities. You ought to visit during the driest months.
