Do Dingle With A Difference With The Dingle Sea Safari

By Author Keith O'Hara

Posted on Last updated: April 19, 2023

Do Dingle With A Difference With The Dingle Sea Safari

The Dingle Sea Safari offers a very different experience to some of the town’s other attractions.

Arguably one of the most unique things to do Dingle , this tour offers you the chance to witness marine life in its natural environment.

From the sturdy open RIB you’ll see the stunning Dingle coastline, caves, cliffs, seals, cormorants, puffins, dolphins and more.

Table of Contents

Some quick need-to-knows about the Dingle Sea Safari

Dingle boat tours

Photos via Dingle Sea Safari

Although these Dingle Boat Tours are fairly straightforward, there are a few need-to-knows that’ll make your visit that bit more enjoyable.

1. Location

Dingle Sea Safaris depart from Dingle Pier on Strand Street. Dingle Town is 48km southwest of Tralee on the Corca Dhuibhne Peninsula, also known as the Dingle Peninsula .

Ticket prices for the tour are, at the time of typing, €85 per person (affiliate link). Please note that prices may change.

3. How long it lasts

These Dingle boat tours tend to last between 2.5 and 3 hours in total.

4. What to expect

You’ll see majestic cliffs, islands and sea caves along the coastline along with many marine mammals and birds. Dolphins love to jump in the wake of the boat and seals bask on the rocky shores.

About the Dingle Sea Safari

Dingle Sea Safari

Dingle Sea Safaris take place in a commercial RIB (Rigid Inflatable Boat) that provides an exciting ride with unobstructed views. The fleet includes a range of sizes from 8-11.5m in length.

They are powered by two 245bhp Yamaha diesel engines and can reach thrilling speeds of up to 33-50 knots (38-57mph).

The trip takes in the breathtaking coastline of Dingle Bay all the way to the Blasket Islands . Each tour takes a minimum of 6 and a maximum of 12 persons .

Sea Safaris are led by an experienced captain who will also provide plenty of interesting information about the marine creatures and the locality as you ride the waves.

Nothing is more exciting than seeing birds and marine-life in their own natural habitat. Every safari is different but you’re likely to see many gulls, seabirds, seals, dolphins and more.

What you’ll see (and hopefully see) on the Dingle Sea Safari tour

One of the reasons that the Sea Safari is one of the more popular things to do for families in Dingle is due to the volume of things you see along the way, like:

You may see hundreds of seals swimming or basking on the shores around the Great Blasket Islands. It is one of the largest colonies of seals in Ireland. Learn about their thick fur and layer of blubber that keeps them warm in these cold Atlantic waters.

You may see young seal pups that are fed on fat-rich milk from their mothers. They grow fast, gaining 3-5 pounds a day. Seals are able to go stay underwater for 2 hours.

Cute puffins with their orange and black banded beaks can be seen off the West Coast Ireland between March and July.

They are most commonly spotted bobbing on the waves and resting when not swimming and diving for fish. You’ll get plenty of photo ops on your Sea Safari from the RIB.

3. Whales and dolphins

Even more thrilling is the chance to spot dolphins and whales. Dolphins love to swim along beside the RIB, leaping in the white water wake. These Atlantic waters around West Kerry are also a great place for whale sightings.

Look for the telltale water spouts or perhaps the salute of a tail fluke as they dive. Whales traverse this shoreline in migratory seasons and sightings include Minke Whales, Humpbacks, Fin Whales and black-and-white Killer Whales (Orca).

4. Islands and coastline

The trip provides an up-close look at the remote Great Blasket Islands that were once inhabited before the Great Famine. You’ll also see many beaches, rock formations, arches and caves carved out by the sea.

It’s a great way to take in the breathtaking beauty of the Dingle Peninsula from the water.

Things to do near the Dingle Sea Safari

One of the beauties of the Sea Safari is that it’s a short spin away from many of the best places to visit in Kerry .

Below, you’ll find a handful of things to see and do a stone’s throw from these Dingle Boat Tours (plus places to eat and where to grab a post-adventure pint!).

1. Food in the town

My Boy Blue

Photos via My Boy Blue on FB

There are heaps of really good places to eat in Dingle . The Fish Box is great for fish and chips and their fishbowl includes seafood caught on their own trawler.

My Boy Blue does some of the best breakfast in Dingle before you set sail and the upscale Boat Yard Restaurant serves Kerry lamb, homemade burgers and more.

2. The Slea Head Drive

slea head route

Discover beautiful and remote Slea Head on a 47km circular drive around the Dingle Peninsula. Slea Head Drive (Slí Cheann Sléibhe in Irish) is one of Ireland’s most scenic routes, starting and ending in Dingle.

It passes Gaeltacht villages, historic sites, Dunbeg Fort, Beehive Huts, a Hollywood film location and glimpses of the Blasket and Skellig Islands .

3. Beaches Galore

Coumeenoole Beach

There’s some gorgeous beaches near Dingle . Visit Coumeenoole Beach  surrounded by steep cliffs with views of the Blasket Islands. Ventry , Bandon Bay, Inch Beach , Béal Bán and Wine Strand are all beautiful places to spend a sunny day.

FAQs about the Dingle boat tours

We’ve had a lot of questions over the years asking about everything from ‘How much are they?’ to ‘What do you see?’.

In the section below, we’ve popped in the most FAQs that we’ve received. If you have a question that we haven’t tackled, ask away in the comments section below.

Is the Dingle Sea Safari worth doing?

Yes. This tour offers a very unique insight into the marine life around the peninsula and it provides a wonderfully unique perspective of the stunning Dingle coastline.

Can you still see dolphins in Dingle?

Yes. However, please keep in mind that Dingle’s famous resident dolphin, Fungie, sadly hasn’t been seen for several years now.

Is tap water in South Africa safe to drink? Will water be provided?

Generally, the tap water in most of the locations we visit is safe to drink (and readily available too!) We don’t provide bottled water due to our sustainability promise, but your Trip Manager will sort you out for anything you might need during the trip.

When is the best time to travel to South Africa?

The question should be - when is it not the best time to travel to South Africa? In the summer (October to April), you’ll find perfect beach weather at our coastal destinations, and lush green landscapes everywhere. It also tends to be the birthing season (baby animals!!!). Winter (May to August) in South Africa is probably the best time for safaris since you’ll find wildlife gathering around waterholes. Luckily, the chances of spotting the Big 5 is equally good throughout the year. And if you’re here for the whales, visiting between June to November would be your best bet.

What time can I book my return flight home?

You can book your flights with departure times after 7pm on our last day. We’ll arrive at OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg at around 4pm.

How do I get from the airport to the trip start location?

We recommend that you book an Uber from the airport. It’s the easiest and most convenient way to get to the start locations on our trips.

Flights to and from your starting and ending points are not included in the cost of your trip. These can be added on during the booking process either online or via our contact center or booked independently by you.

Each trip contains the right amount of free time for you to explore or indulge your travel desires. We offer Free Time Add-Ons, which are additional experiences that are not included in the overall price. These add ons are highlighted on the specific trip page. Your Trip Manager will highlight these to you and organise their booking on trip. Exceptions may apply where pre booking is required but this will be made known to you in your pre departure information.

A number of meal times are left open for you to explore a region and its foodie offerings in greater detail, so budgeting for your taste in non-catered meals is important.

Travel insurance and visas are also not included in the cost of your trip, and should be booked separately.

Find out more details here .

Yes! It’s a requirement of traveling with Contiki that you take out comprehensive insurance cover for cancellation, personal injury, death, medical expenses, repatriation expenses, evacuation expenses, personal liability & loss of personal property and Covid related expenses before you travel with us. It’s also super important to check that your insurance covers all of the activities you’ll be trying out, particularly any adventure activities (for all you adrenaline junkies). For more information check out our full travel insurance FAQs.

Can I stay in my destination a few days before/after the trip starts/ends? And can Contiki help me arrange this?

As we travel this deep into the sound you will get a look at more of Vancouver’s history and see some untouched coast line, as it was before our great city was colonized. The trip will still highlight the wildlife of the sound: seals at Pam Rocks and birds around Christie Island, but will also add in some unique Bald Eagle nests and traditional First Nations locations. This trip is a true example of our west-coast fjord landscape littered with steep cliffs and hanging valleys.  Two-hour trips are offered daily at 11:00am.

After reading some reviews I was cautious. But I booked and so glad I did! The guys were so welcoming. Showed us some amazing sights. Allowed us to stop off at islands and sand banks to take in the phenomenal views, bathe on the beaches and swim in the sea. They set up a cute little beach picnic with fresh cold drinks and popcorn.

You can take your own treats if you wish. It was great! Especially the on board shower head to wash off the sand.

How Dangerous are Tigers?

Do you like Big Animals?  We collected ideas on the Best Places to see Hippos , Elephants , Giraffes , or Rhinos .

That is why wild animals respect them. But if a trainer, for example, stumbles and loses his position of power, it can become dangerous even for him. Also, to strange tigers, he would not dare to enter the cage. By the way, in the wilderness, animals only rarely attack humans. If, for example, a shark hurts a surfer, it is only because he mistakes him for a seal. You can see this because, unlike its usual prey, it does not eat it.

Nevertheless, some people can go into a tiger or lion cage without being attacked, for example, tamers in the circus. They know their animals well and are something like the leader.

For Tiger, a human being is a big animal. And when an animal is in its enclosure, the tiger wants to hunt it because he has an innate hunting instinct.

Approximately 100 people die every year due to attacks by tigers. Probably, humans are often to blame for this themselves because they provoke the animals.

Tigers in Zoos and National Parks

The consequences for the animals are fatal: Massive damage to their health, severe behavioral disorders, and increased mortality.  This Tiger Safari or Tour guide should highlight only sustainable places to go.

  • Perform feats for which they are often trained by force,
  • Have to change venues 50 times a year on average,
  • Spend most of their time in small cages, inadequate enclosures, or in the transport wagon,
  • That essential species-specific behavior such as social contacts or movement are considerably restricted or made completely impossible,
  • that they have little variety or occupation,
  • that they are often not fed and cared for appropriately,
  • That veterinary control or care is often inadequate because there are only a few specialized veterinarians for wild animals nationwide or the circus cannot or will not afford the treatment financially,
  • that in many cases the circus operators lack the necessary expertise,
  • that there is no fixed winter quarters during the play-free period. Only about every tenth company can call a winter accommodation its own.

Nevertheless, animals of wild species can still be seen in many circus operations that travel around the world: Tigers, lions, elephants, rhinoceroses, giraffes, sea lions or monkeys – the range of animal species carried along is extensive. Wild animals suffer in the circus. They suffer massively, because:

Wild animals make exceptionally high demands on their keeping and accommodation. In a circus enterprise, responsible keeping wild animals is generally impossible.

Moscow Metro

The Moscow Metro Tour is included in most guided tours’ itineraries. Opened in 1935, under Stalin’s regime, the metro was not only meant to solve transport problems, but also was hailed as “a people’s palace”. Every station you will see during your Moscow metro tour looks like a palace room. There are bright paintings, mosaics, stained glass, bronze statues… Our Moscow metro tour includes the most impressive stations best architects and designers worked at - Ploshchad Revolutsii, Mayakovskaya, Komsomolskaya, Kievskaya, Novoslobodskaya and some others.

What is the kremlin in russia?

The guide will not only help you navigate the metro, but will also provide you with fascinating background tales for the images you see and a history of each station.

And there some stories to be told during the Moscow metro tour! The deepest station - Park Pobedy - is 84 metres under the ground with the world longest escalator of 140 meters. Parts of the so-called Metro-2, a secret strategic system of underground tunnels, was used for its construction.

During the Second World War the metro itself became a strategic asset: it was turned into the city's biggest bomb-shelter and one of the stations even became a library. 217 children were born here in 1941-1942! The metro is the most effective means of transport in the capital.

There are almost 200 stations 196 at the moment and trains run every 90 seconds! The guide of your Moscow metro tour can explain to you how to buy tickets and find your way if you plan to get around by yourself.
