Our Central Coast Wine Story

On july 4, 1995, before the term "wine tourism" was coined, ahead of the industry and with a keen vision, breakaway tours began delivering "deliciously fun, educational wine tours" in paso robles, slo coast, and santa barbara county. .

If you ask founder and owner Jill Tweedie what inspired her start, she'll laughingly tell you, "I just needed to support my habit." But her passion for wine and hospitality is as evident as it is contagious. Always the entrepreneur, Jill previously owned a clothing boutique, Clancy's Ltd., in downtown San Luis Obispo and Arroyo Grande starting in her late teens. Having lived on the Central Coast most of her life, months of international travel did not change her opinion that "there's no place like home."

During the Rosarito Ensenada Bike Ride, Erik and Jill, passionate cyclists and future spouses, crossed paths and conceived the idea for Breakaway Tours. Initially focused on European wine tours, inn-to-inn, on bicycles, they decided to gain industry expertise locally using vehicles. They found their niche, and as they say, the rest is history.

As the wine industry grew, so did Breakaway Tours. In 1995, Seventy-five wineries stretched from Paso Robles to Santa Barbara; today, there are more than 250 wineries in Paso Robles alone. Jill essentially rode the Central Coast wine wave in, and the "cellar rats" she met are now winemakers and owners of their own award winning labels. Breakaway's deep roots and long-term relationships afford her clients unmatched access and privileges.

Always thirsty for more, Jill expanded her wine knowledge and completed, Level I with the Court of Master Sommeliers (CMS) and Level II with Wine & Spirit Education Trust (WSET), both with distinction. She continues her wine journey today by attending industry events, virtual seminars, regular blind & educational tastings along with plenty of R&D, a thankless job, she admits.

The emergence and expansion of Central Coast Wine Country have brought upscale lodging, fine dining, and a new level of clientele to the area. No longer are people beholden to points north for great wine and culinary experiences. This collective growth propelled Breakaway to encompass every aspect of wine and culinary tourism, including specialty tours and exclusive off-site events, as well as destination management services for corporate and large groups.

Ronnie O’Sullivan jokes he would ‘love to see’ big-money snooker breakaway

Ronnie O’Sullivan has joked he would “love to see” a LIV Golf-style breakaway in snooker – particularly if it meant being offered “£600m to play for three years”. Leading players, including O’Sullivan, are understood to have been approached by backers from south-east Asia about the prospect of establishing a breakaway circuit to rival the World Snooker Tour (WST) from as early as next season.

The world No 1, who is locked at 4-4 with Stuart Bingham after the first session of their world championship quarter-final in Sheffield, has already signed a deal to play in WST events in Saudi Arabia for the next three years.

That would appear to rule him out of taking part in any parallel tour, but O’Sullivan said that if a breakaway on the scale of the Saudi-backed LIV – which has lured some of the world’s best golfers away from the established tours – came along in snooker, he would be more than happy to take the phone call. “I would love to see a LIV-style breakaway, gosh! I wouldn’t mind getting a phone call saying: ‘Here, do you want £600m to play for three years?’ I’d love that phone call, wouldn’t you?”

The 48-year-old, who is chasing a record eighth Crucible title this week, played down talk of a potential rift in the sport. Asked whether players who leave to join a rival tour should be allowed to play on the WST, O’Sullivan said: “I don’t know. I don’t get involved in it.

“Each to their own. Everyone’s got to do what they’ve got to do. I know what I want from the sport and I know what I’m prepared to do. What I need in return from it. And as long as I keep getting that, then I don’t mind playing. But everyone needs to make that up for themselves.

“We all have different positions in the game, different stages of careers. Working more might work for some people, working less might. It’s not just always about money. The most important thing is our time. For some people it’s money.”

O’Sullivan had looked out of sorts during the early exchanges on Tuesday as Bingham took the first two frames. The 2015 world champion looked set for a possible maximum in the next, but came up short of position on the seventh red, allowing O’Sullivan to get on the board with a break of 66.

The seven-times champion rattled a routine black in the jaws of the pocket, allowing Bingham to take a 3-1 lead with a break of 90. O’Sullivan returned after the mid-session interval with a fine 116 break – his 206th century at the Crucible – and pinched the next after both players missed chances.

The players continued to make unforced errors, with O’Sullivan banging his cue against the table after missing an early red in the seventh frame, but a break of 64 edged himahead for the first time. Bingham closed the session with a welcome 72 break to leave the match delicately poised when it resumes on Wednesday.

Judd Trump faces a tense final session against Welsh qualifier Jak Jones on Wednesday after they finished level at 8-8 overnight. Resuming at 4-4, Trump fell two behind as Jones won a 55-minute 10th frame, but the 2019 champion recovered to make it 6-6 at the mid-session interval.

Jones, playing in his second straight Crucible quarter-final, went back in front at 7-6 before a 68 break from Trump – his highest since frame two – levelled it up again. The No 3 seed then edged in front after Jones took a mid-frame comfort break. The world No 44 saved his best until last, producing a 117 break to get back on level terms.

David Gilbert needs three more frames against fellow qualifier Stephen Maguire to reach his second world semi-final, but Maguire gave himself hope by rallying from 7-1 and 9-2 down to trail 10-6 going into their final sessions.

The Scot, twice a former semi-finalist in Sheffield, reeled off three successive frames from 9-2 behind, highlighted by a break of 111. Gilbert responded with a clerance of 130 before a 74 from Maguire in the night’s closing frame cut the gap to four frames.

John Higgins staged a late fightback to trail Kyren Wilson 5-3 after falling 4-0 behind to the 2020 runner-up. Wilson delivered back-to-back breaks of 95 and 93 to open a lead at the interval but four-times champion Higgins got on the board with a fine 129 clearance.

Wilson hit back straight away with a 121 break of his own to lead 5-1 but Higgins – who edged out Mark Allen in a thrilling last-frame decider on Monday evening – dug in, producing a break of 73 and a century clearance leaving him two frames behind.
