True, it might give less freedom of wandering on your own but they take care of all the logistics.

Home to some of the greatest artworks, historical monuments and food on the planet, and with the kind of varied landscapes that you often have to cross continents to see, Italy elates, inspires and moves its visitors like few other countries.

From its art- and architecture-stuffed cities to its astonishing diversity of natural landscapes – dramatic coastlines, serene lakes, pristine mountains, and those famous rolling hills – picking just a handful of destinations to visit in this wonderful country is no easy task.

So how do you decide where to go? It all depends on what you’re looking for in your Italian odyssey, whether that’s history, art, beaches, hiking or even food. No matter your passion, our list of 15 must-see places in Italy should be your starting point.

Best for history

Once caput mundi (capital of the world), Rome was legendarily spawned by a wolf-suckled boy, developed into a vast empire, rooted itself as the home of the Catholic church, and is now the repository of more than two millennia of art and architecture.

Rome should definitely be the centerpiece of your trip if you’re going to Italy for the first time, but there's simply too much to see in one visit, from the Pantheon and the Colosseum to Michelangelo's Sistine Chapel and countless works by Caravaggio. So do as countless others have done before you: toss a coin into the Trevi Fountain and promise to return.

Planning tip: There’s an overwhelming amount to see here, and with limited public transport in the city center, your choice of hotel can be crucial. Map out the sights you’re most interested in before you book – if you want to be at the Vatican at opening time, for example, don't stay near the Colosseum.

Best for a Renaissance fix

From Botticelli’s Venus , emerging coyly from the water in the Uffizi Gallery , to the mind-boggling dome of its cathedral, Florence is a feast for the eyes. This was, of course, the seat of the Renaissance, and there are knock-out names at every turn – Michelangelo in the Accademia, Donatello in the Bargello, Leonardo and Raphael in the Uffizi. 

Further afield in  Tuscany – Italy's most romanticized region – is an undulating landscape of sinuous cypress trees, olive groves and coveted regional treasures. Glory in the Gothic majesty of Siena and the Manhattan-esque skyline of medieval San Gimignano before exploring the vineyards of Italy's most famous wine region, Chianti , and the rolling, cypress-studded hills of the Val d’Orcia.

Planning tip: You’re best off without a car if you’re sticking to major towns and cities since Tuscany has a good rail network. But if you want to explore the countryside, you’ll definitely need a car. 

3. The Dolomites

Best for dramatic mountains

Scour the globe, and you'll find plenty of taller, bigger and more geologically volatile mountains, but few can match the romance of the pink-hued granite Dolomites .

Maybe it's their harsh, jagged summits, the vibrant skirts of spring wildflowers, or the rich cache of Ladin legends. Then again, it could just be the magnetic draw of money, style and glamor at Italy's most fabled ski resort, Cortina d'Ampezzo , or the linguistic curiosity of picture-postcard mountain village Sappada . Whatever the reason, this tiny pocket of northern Italy takes seductiveness to dizzying heights.

4. Amalfi Coast

Best for classic beauty

Italy's most celebrated coastline is a gripping strip: coastal mountains plunge into the piercing blue sea in a prime-time vertical scene of precipitous crags, sun-bleached villages and cliffs rearing up behind. Between sea and sky, mountaintop hiking trails deliver Tyrrhenian panoramas fit for a god.

While some may argue that the peninsula's most beautiful coast is Liguria's Cinque Terre or Calabria's Costa Viola, it is the Amalfi Coast that has seduced and inspired countless greats, from Tennessee Williams and DH Lawrence to Elizabeth Taylor, Virginia Woolf and Jackie Kennedy. Of course, its staggeringly romantic looks also make it one of the best places in Italy for couples.

Planning tip: Yes, driving along the Amalfi Coast is one of the world’s most famous road trips, but often it feels like everyone else on the planet has the same idea as you. Traffic can be nose-to-tail, and parking is effectively nonexistent. Instead, take the ferry between towns or travel by public transport .

Best for stepping back in time

Frozen in its death throes, the time-warped ruins of Pompeii hurtle you 2000 years into the past. Wander through chariot-grooved Roman streets, lavishly frescoed villas and bathhouses, food stores and markets, theaters, and even an ancient brothel.

Then, in the eerie stillness, your eye on ominous Mt Vesuvius, ponder Pliny the Younger's terrifying account of the town's final hours: “Darkness came on again, again ashes, thick and heavy. We got up repeatedly to shake these off; otherwise, we would have been buried and crushed by the weight.”

Planning tip: If you have time, the other major city destroyed by the eruption, Herculaneum, is also worth a visit. Much smaller than Pompeii, its buildings are better preserved, and the location – surrounded by its modern descendant, Ercolano – makes the site even more piquant. Like Pompeii, it’s easily reached on the Circumvesuviana train.

6. Emilia-Romagna

Best for foodies

In a region as overwhelmingly foodie as Emilia-Romagna , it's only natural that its capital, Bologna , is dubbed “La Grassa” (the fat one). Many belt-busting Italian classics hail from here, including mortadella, tortellini and tagliatelle al ragù. Shop in the deli-packed Quadrilatero district – home to food stalls since medieval times – then hop on the train for an afternoon in Modena for world-famous aged balsamic vinegar.

Leave room for Parma , hometown of parmigiano reggiano cheese and the incomparable prosciutto di Parma. Wherever you plunge your fork, toast with a glass or three of Emilia-Romagna's renowned Lambrusco – a world away from the sickly sweet wine that was exported in the past.

7. Lago di Como

Best for a slice of luxury

If it's good enough for the Clooneys and vacationing Obamas, it's good enough for mere mortals. Nestled in the shadow of the Rhaetian Alps, dazzling Lago di Como is Lombardy's most spectacular lake. Its lavish Liberty-style villas are home to movie moguls, fashion royalty, and literal royalty, while the lake's siren calls include gardens at Villas Melzi d'Eril , Carlotta , and Balbianello that blush pink with camellias, azaleas and rhododendrons in April and May.

The city of Como itself is a hotbed of arresting architecture, from the Gothic cathedral to Palazzo Terragni – built by the Fascists as their party headquarters, it’s a classic example of Italian 1930s Rationalism and a striking reminder of the atrocities committed by the regime.  

Planning tip: Como is like the Amalfi Coast – the roads are clogged, and parking is a huge problem. Instead of driving, use public transport; there’s an excellent ferry and bus network, as well as a train line along the eastern edge of the lake.

8. Sardinia

Best for beaches and coastline

The English language cannot accurately describe the varied blue, green and – in the deepest shadows – purple colors of Sardinia’s seas. While models, ministers and perma-tanned celebrities wine, dine and sail along the glossy Costa Smeralda , much of the island – the Med’s second largest after Sicily – remains a wild, raw playground.

Explore its rugged coastal beauty, from the tumbledown boulders of Santa Teresa di Gallura and the wind-chiseled cliff face of the Golfo di Orosei to the windswept beauty of the Costa Verde's dune-backed beaches.

But spend time inland too, and you’ll find some of Europe’s finest prehistoric remains: mysterious nuraghi (megalithic buildings), burial sites so grand they’re known as “giants’ tombs,” and the mountain villages of Barbagia, where locals still practice centuries-old traditions.

Best for sheer italianità

Pompeii, pizza and a whole lot of panache – Naples is a city like no other. Layered like lasagna, each strip of history on top of the last, this is a place where (underground) you can walk along ancient Greek and Roman roads, while at street level there are sumptuous churches, baroque palaces and Maradona – Maradona everywhere .

Outside the city, Vesuvius looms over the time capsules of Pompeii and Herculaneum, while in town, living in the shadow of a volcano gives life a sense of urgency. All that makes for a place like nowhere else .

Planning tip: Naples becomes less chaotic from the water. Taking the ferry isn’t only an option if you’re going to islands like Ischia and Procida – you can also take a boat from the city to Sorrento , Positano and the Amalfi Coast.

Best for a fairytale city

“Unique” is an overused word, but in the case of Venice , there’s no better description. This really is a dreamscape of intricately carved palazzos, gilded churches and world-class museums, all floating on water and crisscrossed by quiet canals.

Avoid the temptation to do a quick drop-in visit to see the main sights – the real Venice is in the silent canals and narrow alleyways, which cast a spell on all who move through them. Tick off the Rialto Bridge and Piazza San Marco , but then stay on to experience this most precious, and precarious, of cities.

Local tip: This is not the place to run a tight schedule. Leave time to wander the alleys , look inside the churches and artisan shops you pass, and hop on a vaporetto that’ll chug through the islands of the lagoon.

11. Parco Nazionale del Gran Paradiso

Best for hiking

If you're pining for a mind-clearing retreat, lace up your hiking boots and explore over 500km (310 miles) of marked trails and mule tracks traversing “Grand Paradise.”

Part of the Graian Alps and one of Italy's very first national parks, Gran Paradiso's pure, pristine spread encompasses 57 glaciers and alpine pastures awash with wild pansies, gentians and alpenroses, not to mention a healthy population of Alpine ibex, for whose protection the park was originally established. At 4061m (13,323ft), the eponymous Gran Paradiso is the park's only peak, accessed from tranquil Cogne.

12. Mount Etna

Best for thrill seekers

Known to the Greeks as the “column that holds up the sky,”  Mt Etna is not only Europe's largest volcano, it's one of the world's most active. The ancients believed the giant Tifone (Typhoon) lived in its crater and lit the sky with spectacular pyrotechnics; today they simply call it idda , or “her.”

At 3326m (10,912ft), she literally towers above Sicily's Ionian Coast . Tackle the climb on foot, on a guided 4WD tour, or stick to the lower slopes, where you’ll find some of Italy’s most exciting wines being grown in the uber-fertile volcanic soil. Sicily is one of the nicest places in Italy to visit, thanks to its extraordinary wealth of history and architecture, its jaw-dropping coastline and, of course, the ever-welcoming Sicilians.

13. Cinque Terre and the Liguria coast

Best for classic coastline

Liguria’s remote Cinque Terre area is coastal Italy at its most spectacular. Five seaside villages wedged between cliffs, encircled by a national park and connected by clifftop footpaths, this is a place where humanity has lived in symbiosis with nature for thousands of years. People have chiseled terraces into the steep cliffs and grown wine here since Roman times; until the 20th century, the locals got about by sea or footpath.

The villages themselves are gorgeous, but spare some time for a hike along the Sentiero Azzurro, the most popular of the paths connecting them. Cinque Terre may be the best known, but Liguria’s coastline is one showstopper coastal village after another – additional highlights include Portofino , Portovenere and Santa Margherita Ligure .  

Planning tip: This is another area where it’s not worth driving – there are ferry services, but our favorite option is the train, which runs along the coast and stops at each of the villages.

14. Valle d’Itria

Best for picture-perfect villages

They look like hobbit houses – small conical-roofed cottages, often stitched together to form a bigger home but always fairytale pretty, whatever the size. Puglia, the heel of Italy’s boot, is famous for its trulli, but you won’t find them all over the region.

Head south of Bari, in from the coast and up onto the high karst plateau, and you’ll find the Valle d’Itria , where the green fields around towns like Cisternino and Locorotondo are dotted with trulli. Alberobello is the center of it all – the centro storico of the town is nothing but streets of them. This is one of the prettiest parts of Italy – truly.

Best for a real city break

Italy’s fashion capital  often gets a bad rap – too international, too organized, not chaotic enough. Don’t believe it. Where else can you go from a Gothic-style cathedral, started in the 14th century, to masterpieces by Leonardo (his Last Supper fresco in the church of Santa Maria delle Grazie is a showstopper, but so is the Sala delle Asse in the Castello Sforzesco , which he painted as a trompe l’oeil forest bower)?

Milan's restaurants pull together the best food from the Italian peninsula, it’s home to one of Italy’s rare cocktail scenes, and its fashion houses are transforming the city’s modern art scene with venues like Fondazione Prada , an old distillery now housing works by the likes of Jeff Koons and Damien Hirst, as well as putting on top-notch temporary exhibitions.

While here, hike, relax on the beach and eat to your heart's content (there are multiple Michelin-starred restaurants along the Amalfi Coast). For something more off-the-beaten-path, set your sights on Atrani. This humble fishing village boasts medieval whitewashed architecture, winding alleys and authentic Italian charm.

There are few destinations in the world that are quite like Venice. Its uniqueness can largely be attributed to the canals that run through this northern Italian city like roads, carrying water taxis and buses in addition to its fleet of famous gondolas. As such, there is a palpable bustle here that may surprise some first-timers. For a relaxing Venice vacation, seek out the smaller streets and canals away from the busy Grand Canal and St. Mark's Square. Just be sure to stroll across Rialto Bridge and tour the grand St. Mark’s Basilica at least once.

Cinque Terre, located on Italy's northern Ligurian coast, is made up of five picturesque towns – Manarola, Monterosso, Vernazza, Corniglia and Riomaggiore. Manarola, the region’s oldest town, boasts scenic vineyards, olive groves and a centuries-old bell tower. Meanwhile, Vernazza, often considered one of Italy’s most beautiful villages, is well-known for its picture-perfect houses and grand medieval castle. The Cinque Terre offers an abundance of exciting activities, from boat tours and hiking to cooking classes and wine tastings. While here, don’t forget to save time for exploring the cliff-side Footpath Monterosso trail, a beautiful hiking path connecting Vernazza and Monterosso.

For centuries, this small island off the coast of southern Italy has attracted plenty of famous faces, from emperors to movie stars, due to its gorgeous scenery. Some of Capri's most amazing sights are best seen by boat, including the Faraglioni rock formations and the Blue Grotto, where sunlight turns the water into an unbelievably vivid shade of blue. On land, the Gardens of Augustus and Villa Jovis, an imperial palace, also provide spectacular views. Meanwhile, in the town center, visitors will find high-end shops and restaurants where they can relax after a long day of sightseeing.

Considered the land of the sirens in Greek mythology, Sorrento continues to lure people with its charm and stunning views. Here, vacationers can explore enchanting piazzas or relax near the water before watching the sun set behind the cliffs. Plus, lemons are big in Sorrento – both in size and in popularity – and the area is known as one of the best places in the world to taste authentic limoncello, a lemon-flavored liquor. It's also the perfect base for daytrips and boat tours to nearby Capri, the Amalfi Coast, Pompeii and other popular Italian locales.

Italy's second-largest city is best known for its high fashion, playing host to Milan Fashion Week each winter and home to iconic fashion houses including Giorgio Armani, Prada and Versace. Visitors can peruse such high-end brands at the dazzling Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II shopping arcade. But Milan's architecture (including the Gothic Milan Cathedral and grand Teatro alla Scala opera house) and sites like Castello Sforzesco (which holds nearly 10 museums and exhibitions) are worth a visit on their own. What's more, the city is incredibly walkable, so feel free to explore on foot – with or without designer stilettos.   

Located about 30 miles from Verona, Lake Garda tends to be more approachable and wallet-friendly (if a bit more touristy) than Lake Como. Activities in this recreational hot spot include swimming and windsurfing, as well as hiking and taking a funicular to Mount Baldo. Lake Garda also attracts families with Gardaland Resort, which includes themed hotels as well as an amusement park, water park and aquarium. If you're looking to get away from the crowds, go beyond the main tourist sites to the quieter northern side of the lake, where you'll find the highest mountains and tucked-away towns.

If you're looking for Italy without the crowds, Tuscany is really all it's cracked up to be. Italy's famous countryside offers travelers spectacular landscapes dotted with romantic villas and castles equipped with wineries and superb restaurants. Don’t miss out on a visit to the walled city of San Gimignano, a UNESCO World Heritage Site famous for its medieval towers. What's more, Tuscan locales like Pisa (which offers much more than its leaning tower) and Siena are an easy drive from top destinations such as Bologna and Cinque Terre, perfect for daytrippers who don't want to stay in one place for too long.

Assisi, a medieval town with religious connections, sits on a hilltop in the lush landscapes of Umbria, just more than 100 miles north of Rome. This peaceful town's biggest draws are its sights dedicated to Saint Francis of Assisi, one of Italy's patron saints, including the Basilica of San Francesco, which houses his tomb as well as colorful frescos, and The Woods of San Francesco. Beyond its religious heritage, Assisi is worth a visit for its picturesque streets and sweeping views, while its location also makes it ideal for a truffle hunting excursion or wine tasting tour.

As the location of several ancient Greek legends, Sicily has an almost mythical quality. Once you visit for yourself, you'll see why so many writers were inspired by this island, which happens to be the largest in the Mediterranean. Be enchanted by Sicily's crystal-clear waters and golden beaches. Marvel at Mount Etna, the highest active volcano in Europe, or try hiking up it in summer or skiing down it in winter. Also save time for taking in the many cultures that have called this island home at its various cathedrals and archaeological sites.

This former Roman city in southern Italy is equal parts chilling and impressive. Pompeii was left almost completely intact after it was buried in ash after the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in A.D. 79. Its astonishingly well-preserved ruins now provide present-day visitors a glimpse into what life was like during ancient times. True history buffs might also enjoy a trip to nearby Herculaneum, another city that was preserved by the same eruption, while more adventurous explorers should consider hiking to the top of Mount Vesuvius for jaw-dropping panoramas of the Bay of Naples and the Sorrento Peninsula.

Best known for its Shakespeare ties, Verona appeals to fans of "Romeo and Juliet" with themed tours of the sights that allegedly inspired the play. But there is more to this city than its literary link. Verona, located about 15 miles east of Lake Garda, is also home to several impressive attractions and historic buildings (the whole city is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, after all). Travelers won't want to miss the Arena di Verona, a first-century Roman amphitheater that is still in use, and Giardino Giusti, a beautifully sculpted Renaissance garden.

Sardinia provides the best of both worlds. Costa Smeralda is all about luxury, with its lush beaches and coves overlooking yacht-filled waters. And away from all of the glitz and glamour of Costa Smeralda, you'll find a more laid-back side of the island, including small medieval towns where Sardinians still practice sheepherding and wear traditional clothing. What's more, Sardinia features several ancient ruins, such as UNESCO World Heritage-listed Su Nuraxi di Barumini.

If you really want to treat yourself on your next vacation, Lake Como is where you want to be. Here, opulent villas and hotels line the shores and sandy beaches beckon to sun seekers. You'll see sleek sailboats and speedboats coasting in the middle of the lake, which is the perfect place to admire the region's surrounding hills. Meanwhile, for a lesson in luxury, tour one of the region’s grand villas; top picks among travelers include Villa Melzi d’Eril, Villa Carlotta and Villa Balbianello. Later, check out the Como Cathedral, a magnificent structure boasting Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque architectural styles.

The small, crescent-shaped village of Portofino is known as a vacation hot spot for the rich and famous. The water surrounding Portofino is often filled with yachts and is great for swimming and diving. Plus, the area's beauty and tranquil atmosphere make it an excellent place to unwind. When travelers need a break from relaxing, they can venture just outside of Portofino to check out historical sites like Castello Brown, an ancient military fortress with incredible views of the Marina di Portofino, and Abbazia di San Fruttuoso, a 10th century monastery that can only be reached by foot or ferry.

Thought to have been inhabited 12,000 years ago, Matera is one of the world's oldest continually occupied towns. Located in the Basilicata region in southern Italy, just west of Puglia, Matera's distinguishing features are its sassi (cave dwellings), which were inhabited until the 1950s. While here, look out for the many viewpoints, called belvederes, for a glimpse of the breathtaking cliffside. Visit Sasso Caveoso for the Casa Grotta cave house (inhabited until 1957) and the Santa Maria de Idris, a rupestrian church carved from the rocky landscape. Meanwhile, in Sasso Barisano – the oldest part of the city – you'll find modern comforts like hotels, restaurants and shops.

There are several reasons why Bologna, the capital of northern Italy’s Emilia-Romagna region, is often called "la dotta, la grassa e la rossa" ("the learned, the fat and the red"). For one, it's home to the oldest university in Europe, the University of Bologna. The city is also a food lover's dream thanks to its world-renowned cuisine, which includes Italian staples like tortellini and lasagna Bolognese. Bologna even features a gelato university and the food-themed amusement park, FICO Eataly World. Plus, the city boasts an array of terra cotta-roofed medieval buildings, including a pair of leaning towers.

Located in the northwest corner of Italy, Turin is the perfect city break brimming with grand architecture, museums and delightful cuisine. Must-visit attractions include Mole Antonelliana (a former synagogue turned into a cinema museum), the 16th-century Royal Palace of Turin and the Museo Egizio (Egyptian Museum). In one instance he arranged invaluable medical assistance following an accident to my partner. The tour was excellent and met expectations. Just be prepared to climb a lot of steps in Matera. In particular our hosts at Tenuta Linazza (masseria) were most welcolming and the food was genuine Italian with a wide variety of dishes available - ranging from delicious desserts to great pasta and seafoood dishes accompanied by hgh quality Puglia wines. Emiliio is a chef extraordinaire as well as being a most professional and insightful guide into Puglia customs and culture. His family members Clara, Michel and Antonio also acted as tour guides and shared these same attributes. The tour flexibility offered is a plus in satisfying the consensus wishes of touring participants. Accomodation at the farm cannot be faulted - spacious and clean with good facilities. There is the added bonus of Pongo the family dog who occasionally walks with you to the local coffee outlet.

Highlights of Southern Italy and Sicily

It was a busy Itinerary as we hoped. We got to see a lot. Antonio was an incredible person and driver. We felt so safe in his hands. Give the man a raise. Accommodations, two were not very pleasant, and should probably not be included in the future tours. 1) Reginella....The showers were so small and they did not drain so you were standing in muck and had to clean your feet after. The staff was grouchy. 2) Athenaeum in Palermo....We had to be switched to three different rooms. The first had occupants in it. The second, smelled like a perfume bottle was spilled in it (I had requested low scents and no perfumy cleaning products) It had 4 single beds in it that felt like sinking cots. The third was OK because it probably had not been used in a while. Their cleaning products in the halls, were so intensely perfumy that I had to wear a mask when leaving my room. The lobby was not a place to hang out in. It was not the best hotel at all. The hotel Albatros was absolute heaven in every respect and it was restorative to stay in it for as long as we did. We all wanted to stay there! The Meals....Too much pasta and pork. I was given alternatives to the pork, but it seems the Italians do not know how to cook chicken properly. Needed more fish on the menu. How about Lamb? don't they eat it? As for beef, forget it! What they call beef tastes like venison and it is horrible. Our guides were awsome! Marisol was great, Pascuale was incredible fun, the pregnant lady at the Trully tour was great, So was the fellow who gave us the tour of the Valley of the Temples; every one of them. I hope you pay them well and treat them great! We appreciate that for the money we paid, we got every penny and more. On a personal note: I have a heavy allergy to Perfumes. I took a chance that my fellow co-tourers would appreciate the fact and help me out. It did not happen. I requested, I did not push, and I managed to make it through. My body finally had enough on the last day and I suffered on the plane ride as well as for the last few days upon arriving home. I don't think any one understands what it means to be allergic to scented products. It is a body's refusal to breathe in particles composed of bad chemistry. Some chemicals do not mix, and are basically toxic, like ammonia and Clorox. Now days in order to make money, many manufacturers are not paying attention to the truth of it and bad combinations are abundant. At Kaiser Hospitals in California, if you show up to an appointment wearing scents of any kind, including detergent on your clothe, they re-book your appointment. It is a medically recognize condition. I thought people would be more accepting, after all, the only reason to wear perfume started in the middle ages when people did not bathe often, but they did not care. So, nothing wrong with the tour, and people had a right to do what they wanted to, I just wish strangers were kinder and the general population was better instructed, because in a few months or years, they will also suffer what I am suffering now. It is inevitable that people will short out. The body is not able to cope and evolve fast enough to keep up with the fast growing toxic levels and they will develop all kind of illnesses and not even know where they are coming from. We did the Italian Discovery Tour and generally felt the company did a great job.We did feel that there were way too many people. We were told there would be 35 and we ended up with a hundred This created alot of logistical problems and we wound up waiting for people frequently . We also asked before we left which optional trips were available and were told the Coliseum was one and we could sign up when we got to Rome but we're unable to do it . It was not offered The other optional trips were great. Our tour guides in general were great. Especially Nicole. The hotels also were wonderful.Our only complaint is that we did a Rome at night tour on our first night. The tour was great but we were left on Rome on our first night and were expected to find our own way back to the hotel Overall we would recommend the tour. The food at our hotels.except in Sorrento was terrible Breakfasts were good at some hotels but dinners were awful. We enjoyed the tour .

The tour was great with a selection of great cities. Our tour guide Marina, was one of the best. So sweet, organized and knowledable! My only constructive criticism would be to have hotels in better locations. Tormina, Sorrento and Agrigento were out of the way. Palermo was the best location!

We enjoyed our trip and most accommodation was very good. We had a hiccup at one place, the room we were given by the hotel was very sub-standard which caused some stress. However, the booking staff answered our messages promptly and worked at getting a resolution asap. We were changed to a better room for the remaining 2 nights. The other hotels were very good although not always central requiring a little travel to and from. I appreciated the booking staff answering questions asap and checking in with us, as this was the first time we had done a 'tour ' such as this and at times needed clarification on what was included and what we needed to arrange.

Sensational Sicily

Tour was excellent, hotels very good but communication could improve. Some of my group were on a WhatsApp connection and were receiving communication but not me. Also I had to ask about where to meet etc on first night. I also wasn’t told that my last day would be a private tour and to meet the guide at 9.00 am. Luckily she persevered in searching for me and I ended up having a fantastic day.

Good guides and good hotel and meals. Didn't expect my initial group of 30 to swell to 45 a few days later. Such a large number made visiting sites difficult. Didn't have listening devices for the first 3 days. Couldn't hear guides very well. Didn't expect to have to pay entrance fees. Web site should make that clear. Loved the selection of sited we visited.

This was an outstanding experience from start to finish. I would highly recommend it. With Emilio and Clara and their family in Salento, I got to experience authentic Italian life as well as sightseeing some incredible towns. I felt like I was staying with good friends who had so much knowledge and desire to showcase the typical foods from the region. Emilio runs a restaurant at the olive oil farm and each meal was delicious. Understanding the production of olive oil was fascinating. And they give flexibility on the time you wish to spend at each place. Each day was different and they change the schedule to suit the weather so you get the best out of the places you visit. My time in Matera was just as outstanding. Mr Cosimo, my guide was very kind and shared so much history of the town with me. He looked after me like a good friend. It was amazing. He gave me great suggestions about restaurants for my free time. The hotel was stunning and had a Roman bath where I could relax. 40 Best Italy Travel Tips

T here were a few things that surprised me during my first solo trip to Italy. For instance, train strikes are common in Italy. Also, the Italian way to have morning coffee is not a leisurely affair. In this article, I’m sharing 40 Italy travel tips so that you can make the most of your experience and have an idea about what to expect while traveling to Italy.

I visited Italy from mid-April to mid-May. And I stayed in Bologna, Cinque Terre, Florence, Milan, Rome, and Venice during my month of travel. Originally, I planned to also visit Naples, Amalfi Coast, and Sicily, but decided to save that for another trip focusing on Southern Italy.

Here are my tips for visiting Italy …

Planning Your Days in Italy

1.   slow down.

Slow down and embrace a more relaxed pace when doing things in Italy, because that is the Italian way. You may expect tours and events and everything to run exactly on schedule, but I suggest you set that thought aside and instead get used to the idea that everything may be a little late, not on a strict schedule.

2.   Plan on Walking a Lot

You should plan on walking a lot because much of Italy is best explored on foot. Wear comfortable walking shoes especially when walking on uneven surfaces like cobblestone.

3.   Avoid Peak Season

The peak season for travel in Italy is June and July. While August is when Italians take vacations to the coastal areas, you can expect expensive prices and crowds at the beach towns . Summer is also hot and humid in most of Italy including popular tourist locations like Rome , Venice , Amalfi Coast , Sicily , and Florence . Avoid the summer season if at all possible and instead visit during spring or fall.

Easter and Christmas are also peak travel times in Italy so try avoid traveling during the major holidays.

4.   Travel During Shoulder Season

Shoulder season is a great time to visit Italy. Why? Shoulder season is just before and just after peak season, so hotel prices are usually cheaper, but the weather is often pleasant.

5.   Know the Italian Holiday Dates

While Christmas and Easter come to mind for busy holiday travel, there are other important holidays to consider when booking your holiday to Italy. Some holidays are regional, so check with the local travel sites for each region to find out more.

Here are a few of the big holidays in Italy:

Besides Christmas Day , there is also a holiday on December 26 to celebrate St Stephen’s Day in Italy.

New Year’s Day is followed by the Epiphany holiday on January 6 th .

Easter Sunday and Easter Monday are celebrated in Italy, so check the dates if you are traveling in April or May. Note that Good Friday is not a holiday in Italy.

April 25 is Liberation Day, and especially when it falls near a weekend, you can expect a lot of Italians will be traveling, so plan your travel and accommodation carefully. During my month in Italy, I happened to be in Cinque Terre for Liberation Day in 2023, and it was massively crowded but still fun!

May 1 is Labor Day (known in Italy as La Festa dei Lavoratori, also Primo Maggio), which is also a holiday to keep in mind when planning your travels. In Rome, there is a huge music event called “Concerto a San Giovanni.”

6.   Don’t Overschedule

At first glance, it may seem easy to visit all of Italy in a couple of weeks. Don’t plan on it. Instead, if you have two weeks in Italy, I suggest you focus on one region, for instance, either the North or the South; don’t try to do both.

Especially for your first visit to Italy, make sure you have enough time to enjoy each place you visit. Generally, plan on spending at least three nights in any major city. You can also add a few more days to factor in day trips to smaller towns and villages, for example, day trips from Rome or day trips from Florence .

And don’t overschedule your days with activities and tours at close intervals. Instead, leave some time in your days for relaxing walks, long meals, and chatting with locals when the opportunity presents itself.

7.   Expect Crowds

Expect tons of tourists, obviously, but expect twice as many as you imagined! And even though you may see photos of famous places without a lot of people around, such as Trevi Fountain, don’t count on it. You’re best chance of having fewer people around is to get up early in the morning, at first light.

Train Travel in Italy

An easy and affordable way to get around Italy is to travel by train. Many routes include high-speed trains so it’s a lot faster than driving.

I recommend you bookmark Italy’s train travel website Trenitalia and download their app so you have easy access to train tickets, info, self check-in, and more. You can also use Italiarail which is an official partner of Trenitalia.

8.   Find Cheaper Train Tickets in Italy

Book tickets early (1-2 months or more) for cheaper ticket prices on high-speed trains. Last minute tickets cost more.

I booked all my train tickets over a month in advance of my flight to Italy. Note that there are various options and prices for the class of ticket and whether or not you make changes to your ticket after purchase.

9.   Train Strikes Common in Italy

One important thing about train travel in Italy that you need to be aware of is that train strikes and public transport strikes are common in Italy. But they announce them in advance, so check the website for Commissione Garanzia Sciopero (I can’t get it to load in USA as of this writing, but apparently it works in Europe.) for train strike announcements. An alternate site is Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport in case you can’t access the other website.

Strikes often occur on Fridays (I wonder why, eh?) but they can occur on any day of the week. I did notice there was a train strike on the Friday following Easter Sunday in both 2022 and 2023. Maybe this is a new Easter tradition in Italy?

Also, train strikes often begin at 9:00 am and finish at 6:00 pm so if you purchase your ticket for an early morning departure, that may help you avoid the hassle of a strike.

The important thing is to have a backup plan if the trains do go on strike. And be proactive by checking for train strikes so you can make alternate plans as soon as possible.

10.   Wi-Fi on Trains

Don't expect the Wi-Fi to work on the trains. If it does, you are lucky. If you need Wi-Fi you should have a backup plan such as a Wi-Fi hotspot for travel .

11.   Validate Train and Waterbus Tickets

Remember to validate your travel tickets when necessary, for instance, when you use the waterbus in Venice, for bus tickets, or train tickets.

Often, when you buy online, you don’t need to validate the ticket, but check to make sure you don’t run afoul of the rules in Italy. Importantly, if you don’t validate your ticket, you may have to pay again, along with a hefty fine .

Hotels in Italy

In the major cities you’ll find hotels ranging from budget to luxury accommodation. While in smaller towns, such as the Cinque Terre coastal towns , you will find more boutique hotels. For the best selection and prices book your accommodation early, as soon as you know your travel dates. Note that hotel prices will double or triple during peak season.

12.   Budget Lodging at Monasteries

Something I wish I had known before I booked my trip to Italy is the fact that certain monasteries in Italy offer lodgings for reasonable rates. And you don’t have to be religious or single to do this. Check out the Monastery Stays website . Read the FAQ and cancellation info to make sure you know what to expect. As with most hotel reservations, the earlier you book, the better options you’ll have available.

13.   Italy City Tax for Hotels

Hotel city tax is charged for the first 5 nights in Venice, but elsewhere, it seems they charge the city tax for every night of the reservation.

The hotel tax rate also varies by hotel quality and the season. Some places only accept cash for the hotel city tax.

14.   Tipping at Hotels in Italy

It isn’t customary or expected to leave a tip for housekeeping at hotels in Italy. But if you want to you can leave a euro per night for housekeeping, and a euro per bag for the porter. Nobody will be offended if you don’t tip, but they will appreciate it if you do tip.

15.   Air-Conditioning in Italy

Don't expect air conditioning in your hotel room except when it's very hot outside and if it’s within the season that Italians consider air-conditioning worthy.

Even if the hotel boasts of having A/C, they won’t necessarily turn on the air conditioning until they decide it’s hot enough to warrant the use of AC. For instance, on my first night in Rome in early May, there was no A/C, even though it was a sunny and very warm day. Thankfully, the next evening the air-conditioning was turned on.

16.   Beds in Italian Hotels

Don't be surprised if your queen-size bed is actually two single beds pushed together to make it queen-size. It can be a bit uncomfortable to sleep in the middle of the bed when this is the case, so just pick a side before you slumber.

If you are traveling solo to Italy, you’ll find some hotels have single rooms with just a single bed. These rooms are more affordable than a double room, so it’s a good way to save on accommodations.

17.   Bathrooms in Italian Hotels

Expect tiny showers; like seriously, I got used to bumping my elbows on the sides of the showers because they’re so small.

Also, expect a bidet in your hotel bathroom. Personally, I wish this were the norm everywhere in the world.

Dining in Italy

Food in Italy is regional, for instance ragu and lasagna originate from Bologna while Rome is well known for pasta alla carbonara . Learn more about the foods of Italy by region .

Do try different foods and remember that it’s usually best to order foods that are local to the region you are visiting.

Also, at restaurants always wait to be seated. Even at outdoor cafes, don’t sit at a table until you have talked with the staff first to confirm.

18.   Restaurant Service Charges

Expect to see a charge on your bill for sitting in the restaurant, using up space, plus the extras such as bread, oil, vinegar, salt and pepper, etc.

On your receipt, it is listed as “coperto” or “servizio” and usually is anywhere from 1.50 euros up to about 3 euros, but it can be even more in trendy restaurants.

19.   Tipping at Restaurants in Italy

Tipping at restaurants is not required or expected in Italy, but it is appreciated. If you’ve enjoyed great service you can round up your bill a few euros to show your appreciation.

20.   Coffee in Italy

Espresso is the most popular style of coffee for Italians. But you can also get other styles of coffee, and often even a big cup of Americano too. If you prefer latte you’ll want to order latte macchiato in Italy.

Although Italians enjoy taking their time when dining out, that is not the case with morning espresso. They will drink it quickly while standing at the counter of the café.

Another thing to know about coffee in Italy is that Italians don't drink cappuccino after lunch. You can order cappuccino at breakfast or early in the morning, but by noon, espresso is the norm.

However, during my travels, when I noticed tourists ordering cappuccino after lunch, there was no argument or even the slightest look of disgust from the servers.

So, if you simply love to drink cappuccino after lunch, you can be a rebel in Italy and order a cappuccino in the afternoon. Personally, I prefer a macchiato, which is an espresso with a little milk. Give it a try and see if you agree it is the best coffee!

21.   Breakfast in Italy

Don't expect to find big American style breakfasts at restaurants. Most cafes have only coffee and pastries on the breakfast menu. Bakeries are a great option for a variety of pastries and sometimes pizza by the slice, available even in the mornings.

Alternatively, hotels often provide buffet-style breakfast (usually for a fee but sometimes included in the price of the room). The buffets typically include all sorts of pastries, salami, prosciutto, hard-boiled eggs, fruits, yogurt, toast, coffee, juices, and plenty more.

22.   Aperitivo Hour

In Italy the aperitivo hour usually starts around 6:30 or 7:00 pm and consists of a drink and small bites about an hour or so before dinner. It can be at the same place you will eat dinner or elsewhere, such as a piazza or small bar.

Popular drinks served for aperitivo hour include cocktail-style drinks such as Negroni, Campari, Bellini, and Aperol Spritz. Note that Campari and Negroni have a much higher alcohol content than Aperol or Bellini. Of course, you can also enjoy a non-alcohol drink for aperitivo hour such as juice or the Italian drink Crodino.

23.   Bread in Italy

Typically, every restaurant will serve a small basket of bread before your meal. Especially in northern Italy, it is served with olive oil, balsamic vinegar, and salt, and it’s usually very good.

In Florence (and all around Tuscany), the bread typically does not include salt in the recipe. If you’re thinking, “That doesn’t sound yummy,” you are correct.

Apparently, saltless bread is due to an exorbitant tax on salt back in the Middle Ages. The Tuscans decided to make their bread without salt rather than paying the tax, and the habit continues even though salt is now so cheap and readily available.

24.   Where are the Vegetables?

When dining in restaurants in Italy, I was surprised at the lack of vegetables served with meals. You really need to make an effort to get some veggies on your plate.

Even when I ordered a pasta dish with eggplant, the serving was light on eggplant. Sure, you can order a salad, but I often found the salads were rather disappointing, with just lettuce, tomato, and cucumber.

At La Lampada restaurant near my hotel in Rome, I did find a fabulous all-vegetable dish that was very satisfying.

25.   They Aren’t Ignoring You

Don't expect your server to check up on you after bringing your food. It's up to you to get their attention if you want something more. Except in the busiest eateries in the most touristy places, you can sit for hours in the cafes and restaurants.

I talked with some American tourists who complained about the "rude service," but I loved being left alone to enjoy my meal without constant interruptions or feeling like they wanted me to hurry up and leave.

26.   Expect to Wait for Your Check

Don't expect your bill immediately after you finish eating; you will wait, and wait, and wait to get the check. In fact, you may find it somewhat difficult to receive your bill.

When I did find it impossible to get anyone’s attention, I walked to the cashier station within the restaurant, and they prepared my bill and took my payment.

27.   Ask for a Take-Away Box

It's okay to ask for a box for leftovers from your meal. The pasta (first course or “primi piatti” in Italian) was often enough for me for a meal on its own. But I like to try other dishes too, so I asked for a take-away box for the leftover food. In most hotel rooms that I stayed in, there was a mini fridge, so storing leftovers was no problem.

28.   Shop the Neighborhood Food Markets

Italy is well known for its gastronomy and for growing some of the best fruits and vegetables around, so you should try a variety of the local foods. Shop at the neighborhood fruit and veggie markets to get the freshest produce.

And do try the fresh tomatoes! They're actually flavorful and delicious, not at all like the tomatoes we get these days in the US or Canada, which simply lack flavor.

I enjoyed eating the delicious fresh fruits in Italy. The Sicilian strawberries are absolutely scrumptious and full of flavor. There are several types of oranges and lemons grown in Italy too, so do try some of the locally grown fruits.

29.   Dining Solo in Italy

I didn’t experience any problems getting seated at a table for one in Italy during my travels. Although sometimes I did get the “ only one?! ” response when I said I was dining alone, overall, dining solo in Italy was enjoyable.

Truthfully, most of the dining tables at the outdoor cafes in Italy are set so close together that you are always dining with others LOL! Seriously, the small tables at the trattorias are sometimes only a few inches apart.

Travel Safety in Italy

Generally speaking, Italy is considered a safe travel location, even for solo female travelers, but that doesn’t mean you can be careless. So always be aware of your surroundings, keep your handbag close to your body, and trust your gut instinct.

30.   Pickpockets and Petty Theft

Always keep your handbag in sight. When dining out, don't leave your purse under your table or hanging over the back of the chair. Trust me, you may have your wallet or credit card stolen. Ask me how I know :/

Consider using a money belt or an anti-theft cross-body travel bag to protect your valuables. I always bring two credit cards and two debit cards and keep them in separate places in case one gets lost or stolen.

31.   Keep a List of  Important Numbers

Keep a list both on your phone and on paper of the most important numbers you may need, including the emergency number in Italy which is 112 (equivalent to 911 for fire, police, ambulance). There is also an emergency medical service number which is 118.

More Tips for Traveling in Italy

32.   download google maps offline maps.

I always download Google offline maps when I travel so that I can navigate even if I don’t have internet or cellphone service. Note that directions for walking/cycling/transit won’t work offline, but the map will still show your location (with a blue dot) and you can navigate on your own.

33.   Have Some Euros for Bathrooms

Some public bathrooms and pretty much all train station bathrooms charge one euro to use the facilities. Sometimes they take credit cards, but most only accept coins, so always carry at least a euro or two with you for the bathroom.

34.   Book Tickets Early for Popular Attractions

For some of the most popular attractions, you have to book tickets early, perhaps a week or more in advance . For instance, in Rome for the Vatican, Colosseum, or crypt tours, and in Florence for the Duomo, Uffizi Gallery, and Accademia Gallery.

Pro Tip: If everything is totally booked, keep checking the attraction and tour websites every morning because they often have cancellations, so you may get a last-minute entry ticket.

35.  Learn a Few Basic Italian Words

At the hotels in major cities, you can expect the staff to be fluent in English and also at many restaurants. But it’s best to learn a few key words and phrases in Italian.

• Goodbye - ciao
• Please – per favore
• Thank you - grazie
• Excuse me – mi scusi
• I don't speak Italian – no parlo Italiano
• Do you speak English? – lei parla inglese

36.   What to Wear in Italy

Europeans don’t usually dress as casually as Americans. And, certainly when visiting churches you should dress conservatively; cover your shoulders and don’t wear shorts.

Comfortable shoes are essential for walking on uneven surfaces like cobblestone walkways in cities like Florence or in Cinque Terre.

If there’s any chance of rain or chilly/windy days then a good quality waterproof jacket is invaluable during your travels.

37.   Mosquitos in Summer

You might be surprised to learn that some cities in Italy, like Florence, have a big problem with mosquitoes during the warmer months. Be prepared with some bug spray.

38.   Cool Off in Church

Churches are free to visit in Italy, and most are gorgeous historic buildings as well as places of worship. The other plus is that most Italian churches are made with thick stone walls that keep them cool all summer. When it’s hot outside and you need a little break, go ahead and visit a church to cool off. Just remember to dress accordingly.

39.   Why are They Playing American Music?

Don't be surprised if a lot of the cafes, restaurants, and shops are playing American music rather than Italian or other European music. For me, this kind of spoils the ambiance, but c’est la vie, or rather, così è la vita!

40.   Street Numbers Sometimes Confusing

Street numbers often do not match up with the continuity of the numbers on both sides of the street. See the photo from Florence below: Number 58 is on the left side, while on the opposite side the number is 87. It takes some getting used to when you are looking for an address and not looking at both sides of the street for the numbers.

These are the cheapest European package holidays for summer 2024

The likes of Spain, Greece and Italy are surprisingly some of the most affordable, according to Which? Travel

Plenty of us love the freedom of browsing for the most convenient flights and then for the perfect little hotel. However, sometimes it’s nice to save on time, faff and money by booking a package holiday  – and thanks to a new ranking, we now know exactly where to go for the cheapest package trips across Europe .

The experts at  Which? Travel have analysed over 4,500 holidays that are still available to book for this summer, and compiled a list of the ten cheapest destinations offering a package deal. 

And the best value deals might not be where you’d expect. Places such as Bulgaria and Türkiye  have garnered quite the budget-friendly rep, but classic holiday hot spots such as Greece , Spain and Italy actually boast some of the cheapest options for 2024. 

Claiming the top spot is Kalymnos , a lesser-known Dodecanese island in Greece characterised by secluded little coves and ridiculously blue waters. The cheapest holiday was £794 per person, but the average here is £847 (€987.50). Given it’s around a 40-minute boat ride from Kos, that’s a pretty good deal. 

In fourth place, it’s the Costa Brava in Spain – we know, we’re shocked too. The gorgeous stretch of coast just north of Barcelona has some cracking beaches, and the package holiday price here is around £952 (€1,110) per person. 

But the biggest and maybe most pleasant surprise of all is that the Amalfi Coast has made the top 10, in spot number six. At around £977 (€1,139), this typically expensive region actually boasts a couple of low-key resorts such as Minori and Maiori , which are great options for a cheaper getaway. What ’ s more,  the region will soon be getting an airport , finally !
