TN: A Tour de Force Steve Clifton Tasting
A TOUR DE FORCE STEVE CLIFTON TASTING - Los Olivos, CA (8/9/2015)
We were lucky enough to be the winning bidder for this outstanding donation package at a charity auction, where Steve and Chrystal shared a very wide selection of their revered, less well known and soon to be released bottlings. Our thanks to them and to the other generous donors of food and entertainment as well.
There was so much wine offered, my notes are regrettably sparse.
- 1999 Brewer-Clifton Pinot Noir Santa Maria Hills - USA, California, Central Coast, Santa Maria Valley Bottled before the winemakers could get their hands on Santa Rita Hills fruit. Fully evolved but hardly fading. The enticing bouquet of spice and cut flowers belies a very cloudy appearance. Any doubts are quickly done away with as the vibrant, acidity-laden wine hits the palate. Loads of plum and spun sugar flavor, fades a touch on the mid-palate but a real treat after 16 years. (92 pts.)
- 1999 Brewer-Clifton Pinot Noir Julia’s Vineyard - USA, California, Central Coast, Sta. Rita Hills Also very cloudy in the glass, like its 1999 Santa Rita Hills brethren. More vegetal than the SRH, displaying earthy notes of mushroom and stewed fruit. Loads of acidity. Fades on the rear palate. (89 pts.)
- 2012 Palmina Rea IV White - USA, California, Central Coast, Santa Barbara County Only the Riesling characteristics emerged on the nose. Precise and clean in the glass, with well integrated varietals combining to create a very enjoyable experience. Loads of salinity alongside crisp notes of citrus, stone fruit and pepper. Outstanding summer juice. (92 pts.)
- 2003 Brewer-Clifton Chardonnay Ashley’s Vineyard - USA, California, Central Coast, Sta. Rita Hills Balanced, robust notes of white peach, smoke and muted spice, with a lengthy finish. Loads of bright acidity. (91 pts.)
- 2004 Brewer-Clifton Chardonnay Ashley’s Vineyard - USA, California, Central Coast, Sta. Rita Hills Everything about this beauty screams Burgundy (maybe Montrachet#. Gorgeous, intense flavors of sweet citrus, white peach and herbs alongside impressive minerality. Fully mature, with rich caramelization emerging on the finish. #93 pts.)
- 2011 Palmina Nebbiolo Lumina Sisquoc Vineyard - USA, California, Central Coast, Santa Maria Valley A true crowd-pleaser, with sweet red berries and a clean finish. (88 pts.)
- 2013 Palmina Barbera Spumante Walker Vineyard - USA, California, Central Coast, Santa Ynez Valley Shame on me for low expectations. This took me straight to Lambrusco, in style and flavor. Cherry, pepper and cut flowers, with a layer of spice emerging on the rear palate. Will definitely put this into regular rotation. Bring on the cold cuts! (91 pts.)
- 2012 Palmina Sangiovese Undici - USA, California, Central Coast, Santa Ynez Valley This one was served too warm so I couldn’t get a good read on the bottle. I’ve enjoyed past vintages as a reasonable “Brunello-equivalent,” though I have to confess (unlike with the Palmina Nebbiolo) I would grab an Italian Brunello every time.
- 2012 Palmina Barbera - USA, California, Central Coast, Santa Barbara County A fun quaffer. Juicy and bright, with loads of dark red fruit, smoky herbs and a tangy, chewy texture. Plenty of lift and an impressive finish. (89 pts.)
- 2006 Palmina Nebbiolo Stolpman Vineyard - USA, California, Central Coast, Santa Ynez Valley A stunning bottle, loaded with fragrant red fruits, leather, licorice and a candied aspect. Past bottles did not evidence this typicity. Too bad Stolpman long ago pulled out their Nebbiolo planting. (93 pts.)
- 2008 Palmina Nebbiolo Honea Vineyard - USA, California, Central Coast, Santa Ynez Valley A very enjoyable bottle, even if a touch less impressive than the 2006 (from a different vineyard). A highly structured Nebbiolo, with a pleasing savory aspect but a bit lacking in depth. (90 pts.)
- 2012 Palmina Rea IV Rosso - USA, California, Central Coast, Santa Barbara County Very interesting to see Steve Clifton take on Bordeaux varietals in a Super-Tuscan kind of way, pretty successfully in my estimation. Highly floral. The components are not too well integrated yet. The Sangiovese in particular stood out, acidity included. (89 pts.)
Steve also poured three recently bottled Pinots that he says he has yet to name, let alone release. Since I didn’t want to preemptively create CellarTracker entries, here are my brief notes:
2012 Machado Pinot Noir (not the Brewer-Clifton release): I only got a quick sip. The wine came across as a very typical, ripe and juicy Santa Rta. Hills Pinot, not sure how well it will age but very enjoyable right now.
2013 Kessler-Hawk “Peak” Pinot Noir: A really enticing wine, chewy, smoky and flavorful.
2014 Quinta del Mar “Secret Spot” Pinot Noir: This was a “wow” wine, weighty and rich, loaded with complex layers of flavor. Steve wouldn’t say where it came from, so I anxiously await The Big Reveal.
The 2006 Nebbiolo was our consensus WOTN, though the mysterious so-called Quinta del Mar was not far behind. Needless to say, the breadth of offerings Steve touches is extraordinary, and this evening excluded his consultant projects. I am often critical of over-extended winemakers, who risk overwhelming consumers and diluting their craft. No such deterioration was evident with Steve’s wine, and I look forward to the next chapter in his and Chrystal’s illustrious careers. Posted from CellarTracker

Tony, Co-owner and Winemaker
Tony Rynders is one of the most acclaimed winemakers in the Pacific Northwest. In addition to Tendril Wine Cellars and his custom crush winemaking service, Tour de Force Wine Company, he owns Tony Rynders Consulting which provides counsel in winery design, vineyard design and development, wine quality improvement, brand development, and product development.
Rynders began working in the wine business in 1989 at Mirassou Vineyards in San Jose, CA. In 1992, he obtained a Master’s degree in Enology and Viticulture from University of California at Davis; then gained winemaking experience with harvests in Napa, Friuli, Tuscany, and South Australia. His winemaking positions include two years at Argyle as assistant winemaker, three years at Hogue Cellars as red winemaker and 10 years at Domaine Serene/Rockblock Cellars as head winemaker.
During his tenure at Domaine Serene, Rynders obtained more 90+ point scores from the Wine Spectator magazine than any other winemaker during this period of time. The Wine Advocate recognized Domaine Serene as one of only two “Outstanding” producers from Oregon. In addition, Domaine Serene was awarded “Winery of the Year” status five consecutive years from Wine and Spirits magazine. Over 10 years, Rynders developed more than 25 different products for Domaine Serene.
In June 2008, Rynders launched his own successful wine consulting business, Tony Rynders Consulting. Tendril launched in 2010 with just one bottling from the 2008 vintage, which has evolved into the “Extrovert” offering. Over time products have been added to highlight all the Willamette Valley has to offer and showcase Rynders’ creativity and wine-making talents.
Diane Simpson, Co-owner
Diane oversees client service, operations, marketing, sales and more. Prior to joining Tendril full time in summer 2016, Diane worked for 16 years at Pacific University, most recently as Chemical Resources and Hazardous Materials Manager. She and Tony met while studying at University of California at Davis, where she obtained a Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry. The couple has two daughters whose artwork is proudly displayed on their labels for Child’s Play, a playful younger sister brand to Tendril Wine Cellars. In addition to taking care of the winery, she takes care of the girls and Badger, the smartest dumb dog ever.
Ben Friesen, Winemaker
Ben joined Tendril Wine Cellars in July 2014 after eight years in the industry in winemaking roles. Prior to Tendril, Ben was Assistant winemaker at Helioterra Wine Cellars and Apolloni Vineyards. He also served as Cellars master for Andrew Rich for three years, where he gained experience in both Willamette Valley Pinot Noir and Rhône varieties from eastern Washington, and Cellar assistant for Dobbes Family Estates. Ben is a graduate of Portland State University with a Bachelor of Science in Psychology and Social Science and a minor in Biology with an ecology concentration.
Andrew Finver, Tasting Room & Marketing Manager
Andrew joined Tendril in March 2020, managing Tendril’s new tasting room in Carlton and the marketing of the Tendril and Child’s Play labels.
Andrew brings an array of experience in wine, food, hospitality and business management. Prior to Tendril, Andrew opened and managed a Michelin-starred restaurant in Manhattan, ran business development for Lois Rae wines in Napa, launched a wine program for a restaurant group in Bangkok, and led custom wine tours in the Willamette Valley. He also had a 15-year career in hedge funds, but he much prefers to talk about Pinot Noir than yield curves.
He met Tony Rynders on his first trip to Willamette Valley in 2000— Tony’s wines and personality were the draw for Andrew to join the Tendril team. Andrew earned a Master in International Affairs from Columbia University in New York and a Bachelor of Arts from Pitzer College in Claremont, CA. He currently lives in Portland, where he is in awe of the city’s dynamic food scene.
While you might find any of Tony, Diane, Ben or Andrew in the Tasting Room on any fine day— making our seated tasting experience one of a kind in the valley— you might also find our winemakers hard at work in the vineyards , especially with the addition of Tendril’s new Maverick Vineyard.
O ur vision is “slow wine.” Everything we do is towards the best possible wines and it simply takes more time: continual interaction with vineyard, adaptive winemaking, separate small-lot fermentations, and longer aging. It is a process rather than a production, and not always successful.

SOLD OUT Tour De Force
“Tour de Force” Limited Edition Giclée on canvas
31 x 18 inches Edition Size: 325 Plus 135 Artist Proofs All signed and numbered by the artist
Frozen in time, “Tour de Force” marries the textures of wood and glass in compositional excellence. It’s the simple grace of Arvid’s work that unearths fond memories of a deep descent into provincial caves past sleeping barrels of wine and into an inviting tasting room to enjoy the offerings of the vineyard. Like a well loved bottle, this work continues to build anticipation for the next opportunity to share wine in good company.
Although much of Arvid’s life is spent traveling, he continually seeks the back roads to share unique experiences with great people. Frequently accompanied by friends and family, Arvid most enjoys celebrating his good fortune with others. “Like a great bottle of wine, anything in life worth having is best when shared.”

A Winemaking Tour de Force
Get behind the scenes at D.H. Lescombes Family Vineyards.
PULL BACK THE CABERNET-COLORED ROPE for a peek at everything that goes into the D.H. Lescombes Family Vineyards winemaking operation. Offered from spring to fall, the VIP tours start in Las Cruces or Deming with a two-hour trip to the 240-acre farm east of Lordsburg. During harvest, which lasts through September, visitors can sample grapes off the vine, enjoy lunch and a wine pairing, and view founder Hervé Lescombes’s house and custom-built wine cellar. “They’ll usually open a few bottles from the cellar,” says Daniel Gonzales, D.H. Lescombes creative content manager. “Those wines are at least 10 years old.”
The Deming site also features a behind-the-scenes look at the Lescombes tasting room, fermentation tanks, and bottling lines, and a special tasting of wine from an oak barrel that’s partway through aging. The full day wraps with a round of wine sampling and snacks in the tasting room before returning to Las Cruces. “It’s a neat little preview into the winemaking process,” Gonzales says.

To that end, SME also manufactures formidable turntables . The Model 30 has remained a reference component for more than three decades, and the more contemporary Model 60 has become the brand’s ultimate statement piece. Now, commemorating its 75th anniversary in audio, SME has released the Model 60 One of One Signature Edition , a limited-production version offered in one of 75 colors. That hue, once selected by the client and created through a proprietary aluminum-anodizing process, is removed from SME’s palette, never to be replicated.
The $88,789 turntable is a technical tour de force—one could even consider it a bit of a deal, given that some comparable combinations of turntable and tonearm easily crest the $500,000 mark. Vibration, the turntable’s natural enemy when it comes to high-resolution sound reproduction, is damped here by decoupled adjustable feet and an optimized suspension setup, while the belt-driven platter uses a sophisticated drive system and an AC motor powered by a highly accurate speed-control unit. The new Series VA tonearm, available only on the Model 60, is CNC machined from an acoustically inert polymer-resin material that further reduces resonance and reverberation.
