If you are approaching your 60s or have already entered that age bracket, free travel passes and medical care are just a few things you can enjoy. Getting older has many benefits, and receiving services for free is just one of them.

This guide has collated some of the best free things for 60-year-olds who live in the UK. So, if you’re looking to travel across the country or pick up some new bits for your home, it is worth checking this guide before you book or buy, as there might be something you can get for free.

Free travel passes for over 60s

When it comes to free things for 60-year-olds, one of the major benefits of reaching this age is being able to enjoy certain free travel methods.

Free bus pass

Free bus passes are one of the best free things when you are 60 or older that you can get in the UK.

In recent years, the rules around free bus passes for older people have changed, but currently, in England, you can claim a free older person’s bus pass when you reach the female state pension age, which is currently 66, regardless of gender. This gives you free local bus travel anywhere in England.

Residents in Wales, Northern Ireland and Scotland can get an older person’s bus pass for free travel at the age of 60.

Free travel for London residents

If you live inside or outside of London, you can get the Freedom Pass , which allows you to travel for free on the bus, tram, DLR, and most rail services in the capital, as well as getting free local bus travel across England.

For people living in London in one of the 32 London Boroughs, the 60+ Oyster Card means you can ride the capital’s public transport for free.

Free travel in Scotland

Scotland offers free travel on national bus services, and in some areas, older people can enjoy free rail travel.

To access free train travel, you will need to get a National Entitlement Card, and you can apply for one on the ScotRail website .

Free rail travel in Wales

People over 60 can benefit from free bus travel in Wales with a Concessionary Travel Pass. The pass also allows for free rail travel in some areas.

Free rail travel includes routes from Wrexham to Hawarden Bridge, Shrewsbury to Swansea, or Llandudno to Blaenau Ffestiniog.

You should check the Transport for Wales website as some routes come with stipulations – such as only being able to travel for free from October to March.

For example, socialising with friends and family over a delicious meal can be a great way to stay connected to the people around you. Even though eating out can sometimes be expensive, if you are over 60, there are many restaurants where you can get a great discount or even a free meal.

Free meals out

If you frequently wish to dine out, obtaining a Tastecard is a wise choice. While not exclusive to seniors, Tastecards are highly valuable, offering up to a 50% discount on food or 2-for-1 meals at over 6,000 restaurants in the UK. Sign up for a 90-day trial for just £1 or opt for the best value with an annual membership at £34.99. Many of the restaurants offer a 2for1 offer, meaning you can get a whole meal for free.

Independent pubs and country dining houses often feature pensioner lunches on specific days, discounted afternoon teas or a 2for1 deal. Verify these offerings by calling, checking their websites, or inquiring locally. Many places display these deals on boards outside, and there's no harm in asking the staff!

As one of the largest supermarkets in the UK, Asda extends a special offer to individuals aged over 60. Customers in this age group can purchase soup and a bread roll for just £1, and they also have the privilege of enjoying unlimited tea and coffee for free at any of Asda's 205 cafés.

Free drinks

In partnership with Caffè Nero, Waitrosehas a hot drink offer for members of its myWaitrose loyalty scheme, which is free to join. To benefit from this offer, customers need to bring their own cups to avoid a charge for a reusable one, and there is no minimum spend requirement to receive the complimentary drink.

Free services for over 60s in health and fitness

As you get older, it is important that you continue to stay fit and look after your health. In the UK, many free services are available to people over 60, ranging from free eye tests to free health checks.

Free prescriptions

If you are over 60, any medicine prescribed by a doctor is free anywhere in the UK. To get your free prescriptions, you will need to tell the chemist at the till and fill in any forms for the prescription.

You may be asked to show proof of age, so you will need to bring some form of identification.

Free eye tests

When you are 60, another free thing that you can benefit from is free eye tests. You are entitled to a free NHS-funded eye test every two years, and you should book your appointment as normal and then notify the staff that you are eligible for a free test on arrival.

The likes of Specsavers offer free eye tests for those over 60, but you can find out more information about free eye tests on the NHS website .

Free NHS dental care

Free hearing

Hearing loss affects one in six people in the UK, and it is recommended that when you reach the age of 60, you have a hearing check every two years to keep an eye on your hearing.

At Boots, if you are over 50, you can book a free hearing test and ear health check. You can visit the Boots website to book the free hearing test. Alternatively, you can explore their online hearing test if you have any worries about your hearing. Specsavers also offers everyone a free hearing test, regardless of your age, and also has a discreet online version too.

Free health checks

The NHS Health Check is a free check-up of your overall health, and it can tell you whether you're at higher risk of getting certain health problems.

If you’re aged 40 to 74 and do not have a pre-existing health condition, you should be invited to an NHS Health Check by your GP or local council every five years.

The health check will usually take around 20 to 30 minutes, and it will include:

• Measuring your height and weight
• Measuring your waist
• A blood pressure test
• A cholesterol test
• You may also get your blood sugar level tested

Free online fitness classes

It is important to stay fit and active as you age, and if you have limited mobility or are a wheelchair user, you don’t have to leave your home to try a fitness class.

In today's digital world, there are lots of free online fitness classes available for older people. Below are just a few you could try:

In some areas across the UK, free swimming and gym classes are offered to people over 60.

Southwark Council , for example, offers residents free swimming and gym facilities in their leisure centres all day on Fridays and from 2 pm to closing time on Saturdays and Sundays.

Adults over 60 can also take part in Silver sessions for free throughout the week, whilst residents with a disability that meet their eligibility criteria can use the leisure centres seven days a week.

Free shopping items for over 60s 

There is no denying that everyone loves to save money where they can, and by being over 60, you can be entitled to some great discounts and even some freebies.

Discounts at the supermarket

Iceland has taken the lead as the first supermarket to introduce exclusive discounts for individuals aged over 60. Every Tuesday, customers in this age group can enjoy a 10% discount on their shopping in Iceland, with no minimum spending requirement. This discount is also applicable at The Food Warehouse branches. To avail themselves of these special discounts, customers need to present proof of age, such as a driver’s license or bus pass.

Membership benefits

B&Q, known for its extensive range of home improvement products, provides enticing deals every Wednesday. By becoming a member of the Diamond B&Q Club, customers receive emailed vouchers, gain access to exclusive offers, and enjoy a 10% discount on key cuttings, along with discounts on van rentals.

ATS Euromaster caters to the automotive needs of individuals aged over 60 through its Club 60 program. Members of this club benefit from year-round discounts on various car-related services, including MOTs, air con recharge, wheel alignment, and a 15% discount on servicing, brakes, steering and suspension, exhausts, batteries, and more.

Free items over 60s can get for the home

With the cost of living gradually getting more expensive, making sure bills are paid can become a worry, as are unexpected costs which may not have been saved for. However, there are some schemes and discounts to which those who are over 60 are entitled.

Free TV license

Various TV licence discounts and concessions are available, and your eligibility depends on your individual circumstances. If you are 75 or older and receive Pension Credit, you are entitled to a free TV licence that covers both you and anyone residing with you, regardless of their age. For those who are blind or have a severe sight impairment, a 50% discount on the licence is applicable, but the licence must be in your name if you live with others to receive the discount.

In the case of individuals residing in care homes or sheltered housing, there is the option of an Accommodation for Residential Care (ARC) licence, priced at £7.50. This licence is necessary only if you watch TV in your separate accommodation rather than in communal spaces like a residents' lounge. To determine whether your care home or sheltered housing qualifies for an ARC licence, it is recommended to consult with your warden or administrator.

Free energy payment

The Winter Fuel Payment , allocated annually and exempt from taxes, is intended for households with individuals born on or before 24 September 1957 (for the 2023-24 period). Its purpose is to assist in offsetting winter heating expenses. While this payment is typically disbursed automatically, you can complete a claim form if you believe you have not received it.

Discounted vet expenses

Veterinary expenses can become quite costly in case of unexpected issues, and even routine check-ups and vaccinations contribute to the overall cost. It is always worth checking with your nearby veterinary practice about potential discounts for individuals over 60.

Dogs Trust provides a 50% discount with their subscription , amounting to just £12.50 per year. This membership comes with several advantages, including unrestricted access to a 24-hour emergency advice service staffed by veterinary professionals, third-party public liability insurance for your dog, a complimentary Canine Care Card ensuring Dogs Trust's commitment to caring for your dog in the event of your passing, and a subscription to the Wag! Magazine, delivered three times a year.

Free payment for grandparents

If you're among the 63% of grandparents providing care for your grandchildren, you may qualify for additional tax credits amounting to £250 each year. Additionally, this benefit can be retroactively applied as far back as 2011. To meet the eligibility criteria, you must dedicate some weekly time to caring for a grandchild under the age of 12.

Free handyperson service

For individuals aged 60 or older or those with a disability, several councils offer a handyperson service. This service can cover minor works to a home, such as replacing light bulbs and other small DIY jobs.

If you're 60 or over or you have a disability, you might be eligible for public transport concessions – from discounts on your rail journeys to a free bus pass.

What transport concessions are available?

Can i get a free bus pass, can i get a discount on train travel, can i get a london freedom pass, what if i have difficulty using public transport, what if i'm unable to use public transport, more travel concessions questions.

There are several national public transport concessions available to older and disabled people. Some entitle you to discounts on your fares, while others allow you to travel for free.

Eligibility for these concessions depends on whether you have a disability or your age. 

Depending on your age and your circumstances, you might be able to get one of the following free bus passes, which allow you to travel free on local buses:

• an older person's bus pass
• a disabled person's bus pass

What age do I have to be to get an older person's bus pass?

You can get an older person's bus pass when you reach State Pension age, which is currently 66 for both women and men.

If you're 60 or over and live in London, then you can get free travel on buses, trains and other modes of transport in and around London with a 60+ London Oyster photocard.

Apply for your 60+ London Oyster photocard on the TFL website Other areas may also offer travel concessions for people who are over 60. It's a good idea to check with your local council to see what help is available. 

How can I get a disabled person's bus pass?

There's no central provider of the disabled person's bus pass – to find out if you're eligible and how to apply, you need to get in touch with your local council.

Are there any other discounts if I'm an older person or I'm disabled?

It's a good idea to contact individual transport operators to see if they offer discounts.

For instance, National Express offers Coachcards. These are discount cards for older or disabled customers. You buy them for a set fee of £15 and they get you a third off the cost of your travel across the year.

• you're registered as deaf or use a hearing aid
• you're registered as having a visual impairment
• you have epilepsy

• you receive War or Service Disablement pension
• you receive Attendance Allowance
• you receive Severe Disablement Allowance

Freedom Passes give London residents free travel in the city – including National Rail services, the Underground, buses, river services and trams – and free local bus journeys nationally.

If you live in London, you can apply for a Freedom Pass if one of the following applies to you:

• you've reached State Pension age
• you have a disability.

National Rail has an interactive tool called Stations Made Easy, designed to help people find their way around stations and find more accessible routes, avoiding potential difficulties like stairs. This may be helpful if you have difficulty using public transport because of your health.

If you're disabled, you can't use public transport, or you don't have access to a car, you might also be able to use a community transport scheme – such as a social car, dial-a-ride, or taxicard scheme.

Shopmobility schemes help people shop in town centres by lending out wheelchairs and scooters. Some local councils also offer concessions on local public transport.

No, you can't use a free bus pass on National Express buses. To get senior concessions on National Express you need to buy a senior coachcard, which costs £15 a year and gets you a third off the cost of your travel across the year.

Older adults in the UK are eligible for a variety of public transport concessions, helping save you money in the process. These include a Senior Railcard, a Disabled Persons Railcard, an Older Person’s Bus Pass and more!

Here, we’ve looked at how to get each of these discounts or freebies for older adults, along with other discounted forms of public transport you may be eligible for.

London Freedom Pass

60+ london oyster photocard, discounts on rail travel.

You could be eligible for one of the following railcards that’ll get you discounts on train services, depending on your age, relationship and whether you’re classed as having a disability:

• Senior Railcard (60 years and over)

Disabled Persons Railcard

• Two Together Railcard

Both of these are discount cards. You purchase them each year for a set fee and they get you a third off the cost of your train travel.

Senior Railcard

The Senior Railcard is available for anyone aged 60 and over to buy. This costs just £30 (or £70 for three years), so will have effectively paid for itself after only a few train trips.

When using the Senior Railcard, you can expect to make average annual savings of £76, or £5.34 per journey. For example, a train from London to Liverpool goes down from around £68.60 to £45.25, while a train from Doncaster to London goes down from £32.50 to £21.45.

You can apply for one of these through the Senior Railcard website . You’ll need a valid passport or UK driving licence for ID. You can also apply in person at some of the UK’s most staffed railway stations.

If you meet any of the following criteria, you could be eligible for a Disabled Persons Railcard:

• You receive a disability-related benefit, such as Personal Independence Payment , Attendance Allowance or Severe Disablement Allowance
• You’re registered as deaf or you use a hearing aid
• You’re registered as having a visual impairment
• You have epilepsy

Senior Railcard For Couples

Though there’s no railcard specifically aimed at older couples, the Two Together Railcard works in the same way for people of all ages. This railcard is to be used by you and a second person - both of you will be named on the railcard. They’re best used by yourself and the person you travel with most - often your partner or spouse.

When using a Two Together Railcard, you get one-third off rail fares when travelling together. It costs just £30 and leads to average savings of £153 per year (or £6.26 per journey).

For example, travelling from London to Edinburgh would typically cost around £145, but this goes down to £95.70 with a Two Together Railcard. Similarly, getting the train from York to London goes down from £88 to £58.

Free Bus Pass For Over 60s

You could be eligible for one of the following free bus passes, depending on your age and whether you’re classed as having a disability:

• An older person’s bus pass
• A disabled person’s bus pass

Both of these passes will get you free travel on local buses.

It might also be worth getting in touch with individual transport operators to see if they offer any discounts. For example, National Express offer Coachcards to older (60+) or disabled customers. These cost £12.50 a year and save you a third on your travel.

You’ll become eligible for an older person’s bus pass when you reach the State Pension age.

Disabled person’s bus pass

Unlike an older person’s bus pass, there’s no central provider for the disabled person’s bus pass.

To find out if you’re eligible and where to apply, get in touch with your local council . All you need to do is enter your postcode and you’ll be redirected to the relevant part of your local council’s website.

Senior Rail Travel and Bus Discounts Throughout the UK

English national concessionary travel scheme.

The English National Concessionary Travel Scheme (ENCTS) covers senior travel discounts in England. Passes are issued locally, but give cardholders free bus travel throughout all of England. An ENCTS bus pass also allows for some free and discounted rail tickets. You must be 66 years or older to be eligible.

c2c Senior Rover Travel

c2c’s Senior Rover ticket allows unlimited one-day train travel for just £7 (or £10 when including London destinations). These are available to anyone aged 65 years and over.

Greater Manchester Senior Travel Pass

Older adults can get free rail tickets in Greater Manchester between 09:30 and midnight Monday to Friday, and anytime at weekends and during public holidays. Eligibility is based on age and residency in Greater Manchester.

Merseyside Senior Travel Pass

Senior citizens can get free rail tickets in Merseyside after 09:30 Monday to Friday (to avoid morning peak times), and anytime at weekends and during public holidays. Eligibility is based on age and residency in Merseyside.

South Yorkshire Senior Travel Pass

Older adults get 50% off rail fares in South Yorkshire between 09:30 and 23:00 Monday to Friday, and anytime at weekends and during public holidays. Eligibility is based on age and residency in South Yorkshire.

Tyne and Wear Senior Travel Pass

Older adults in Tyne and Wear can purchase reduced-price train tickets as well as extra discounts if they get a Metro Gold Card (£12 per year). Eligibility is based on age and residency in Tyne and Wear.

West Midlands Senior Travel Pass

Older adults get free train travel in the West Midlands between 09:30 and 23:00 Monday to Friday, and anytime at weekends and during public holidays. Eligibility is based on age and residency in the West Midlands.

West Yorkshire Senior Travel Pass

Scotrail Club 50

Members get a 20% discount on Off-Peak and Advance and cheaper flat-fare tickets when purchased online. These offers are available all year round to Scotrail customers aged 50 and over. Scotrail Club 50 is perfect for people who aren’t yet eligible for a Senior Railcard.

National Entitlement Card (NEC)

The National Entitlement Card (NEC) allows older adults in Scotland to receive travel discounts. Anyone living in Scotland can access discounted travel schemes throughout the country. To be eligible, you must also be 60 years or over.

Edinburgh and Glasgow over 60s rail discounts

Scotland’s two largest cities offer the following rail travel discounts:

• Glasgow - Discounted rail tickets on journeys within Strathclyde and Glasgow Subway

There are also reduced train fares for 60+ NEC holders in other parts of Scotland.

Welsh Concessionary Travel Card

In Wales, travel discounts for older adults are covered by the Welsh Government Concessionary Travel Scheme. This offers free bus travel throughout Wales to people aged 60 and over, as well as some free and discounted rail tickets.

Northern Ireland

60 plus smartpass.

You’re eligible if aged between 60 and 64 while being a permanent Northern Ireland resident. A 60 Plus SmartPass entitles you to free bus and rail travel throughout the country.

Senior SmartPass

This is aimed at permanent Northern Ireland residents over 65. They entitle you to free bus and rail travel throughout the country, along with free cross-border rail travel all along the Belfast to Dublin line.

London Freedom Passes allow London residents to travel around the city for free, including on trams, National Rail services, the Underground, river services and buses, as well as free local bus journeys nationally.

If you live in London, you can apply for a Freedom Pass if one of the following applies to you:

• You’ve reached the State Pension age (in this case, you’ll be eligible for an Older Person’s Freedom Pass)
• You have a disability (in this case, you’ll be eligible for a Disabled Person’s Freedom Pass)

You can travel for free on TfL (Transport for London) services with an Older Person’s Freedom Pass from 09:00 on weekdays and anytime on weekends and bank holidays. A Disabled Person’s Freedom Pass allows you to travel at any time on TfL services.

If you’re over 60 but under the State Pension age and you live in any London borough, you can get a special Oyster card for free travel in the city on several different rail services.

Many people get a 60+ London Oyster Photocard before they’re entitled to a Freedom Pass. If you’re eligible for a Freedom Pass, you can’t get a 60+ London Oyster Photocard.

This costs £20 and gives free travel on:

• The London Overground
• TfL (Transport for London) Rail

As well as all London Overground and TfL Rail services, you can also use the 60+ London Oyster Photocard on certain National Rail services on the following lines:

• Chiltern Railways
• Great Northern
• Greater Anglia
• Southeastern

• Proof of your residential status in London.
• A colour photograph of yourself.
• You will need to agree to our terms and conditions.
• You will also need to take note of your application reference number so you can track your application. This will be provided during the application process.

Step 3: Tracking your application

if you have applied for your Freedom Pass online you will be able to track its progress by logging into your account with your username (email address) and password. We will also email you once your pass has been posted.

Please leave two to three working days from when you submit your application before trying to track it.

Receiving your Freedom Pass

Cards are sent out by second-class post. If the online tracker shows that your card has been dispatched, it may take up to 10 working days to reach you.

Merseytravel Over 60s pass

Merseytravel offers free travel on all buses, trains and Mersey Ferries river crossings for anyone aged 60 or over who lives in Merseyside.

When you reach your 60th birthday you can apply  for a Merseytravel Over 60s travel pass. Once you reach State Pension Age you will be given your English National Concessionary Travel Pass which also allows you to travel on local bus services anywhere in England.

When can I use it?

Merseytravel Over 60s pass -  All day on Saturdays, Sundays and bank holidays. Any time Monday to Friday, except for journeys which start between 6.30am and 9.30am.

How do I apply?

You can apply at a Merseytravel Centre or by post.

What do I need to take or send?

• A completed application form.  • A suitable passport-sized colour photograph of yourself, which must have been taken within the last 12 months (please make sure you write your name and date of birth clearly on the back of your photograph). Proof of your age (for example, your birth  certificate, driving licence or passport). • Proof that your address is in Merseyside (for example, a recent council tax bill, gas, electricity or water bill, driving licence, bank or building society statement, official tenancy agreement or letter from the Department for Work and Pensions). • If you are applying by post you must include a copy of your photographic identification, either a passport or photo card driving licence. If you do not have photographic identification, we will not be able to process your application by post and you will need to go to your local Merseytravel Centre to continue with your application.

Cruise Discounts For Seniors

The cruise lines are always offering discounted fares for one reason or another.  Make sure you call your favorite cruise line to make sure you're getting the best deal for the month in which you're cruising.  In most cases, the big cruise lines like Carnival Cruises , Norwegian, Celebrity Cruises, and Royal Caribbean will offer discounts to those travelers that are 55 and older , especially if they have an AARP membership . Get an older person's travel pass

You can get a pass for free bus travel anywhere in England when you reach the female State Pension age. It does not matter if you’re a man or a woman.

The pass lets you travel for free during off-peak times:

• between 9.30am and 11pm, Monday to Friday
• all day at weekends and on public holidays

If you live in the West Midlands, you can use your pass on the buses from 9.30am until 11.59pm. You can also get free travel on:

• trains in the Blue Zone from 9.30am to 11.59pm
• trams from 9.30am until the last service of the day

If you want to travel before 9.30am, you can get a £1.50 single fare on National Express West Midlands buses. Show your travel pass to the driver and ask for a £1.50 single ticket.

If you often travel before 9.30am, you can get a pre-9.30 add-on ticket. Use our ticket finder to find pre-9.30 add-on tickets .

You can also use your travel pass as a pay as you go card. This means you can use it to pay for:

• travel before 9.30 am

To use your travel pass as a pay-as-you-go card, you need to either:

• register your card online

Check if you're eligible

You can find out if you've reached the age for free bus travel on the GOV.UK website.

You can get a West Midlands older person's travel pass if you live in the West Midlands. You must live at a property where council tax is paid to one of these councils:

• Wolverhampton

If you do not live in the West Midlands, contact your local authority to apply.

Apply for an older person's pass

You can either:

• apply online
• download an application form to print out and send in the post

If you apply through the post, send your application to the address on the form.

Renew your travel pass

We'll write to you 4 to 6 weeks before your pass expires and tell you how to renew it.

If you’ve lost your letter, you can still renew your travel pass online .

You should get your new pass 2 weeks before your current one expires. Contact Customer Services if you have not got it by then.

Update the details on your travel pass

You can update your personal details online if your name or address has changed.

You can update your photo by email or by post. Send your new photo to Ticketing Services.

You'll need to send us:

• a new, passport-style colour photo
• your full name and address
• the 16-digit number on the front of your travel pass

60+ SmartPass and Senior (65+) SmartPass

To apply for a 60+ SmartPass you must be aged between 60 and 64 and permanently resident in Northern Ireland for a minimum of three months. To apply for a Senior (65+) SmartPass you must be aged 65+ and permanently resident in Northern Ireland for a minimum of three months.

How to apply

You can get an application form:

• by calling in person at any manned Translink bus or rail station
• by phoning 028 9066 6630 (applicants who are deaf, have hearing loss or tinnitus can use the textphone number 18001  028 9066 6630) and asking for a form to be posted to you
• by emailing  [email protected]  and asking for the type of application form you require (for example, 60+, Senior 65+, or War Disablement and so on) to be posted to you (provide your name and full address with postcode)

You will never be contacted asking for any bank account details when you're applying for or renewing a SmartPass. 

If you’re applying for the first time, Translink is currently receiving a high volume of requests for application forms. It may take up to four weeks to process applications, which are being done as quickly as possible and in order from the date received.

60+ SmartPass applications

Applications may be made no earlier than six weeks before your 60th birthday. 

Applications can take four to six weeks to process. 

Senior (65+) SmartPass applications

Applications may be made up to four weeks before your 65th birthday, but the SmartPass will only start working on your birthday.

Applications are processed as soon as possible but can take four to six weeks, and your new pass will be posted to you directly.

Proof of age and residency

After filling out your form you must take it, in person, to your nearest Translink bus or rail station along with a countersigned passport-sized photograph and a choice of the following documents to prove your age and residency.

Proof of age:

• driving licence (non-UK driving licences must contain your date of birth)
• passport (non-UK passports must contain your date of birth)
• birth certificate (if name on birth certificate differs from name on application form, then you must provide official documents to support any name change)
• Northern Ireland Electoral ID Card

Proof of residency:

• driving licence (non-UK driving licences must contain your address)
• recent (no more than three months old) utility bill (an electricity, gas or landline telephone bill, but not a mobile phone bill)
• recent (no more than three months old) bank or building society statement

60+ SmartPass holders who will turn 65 shortly

Your 60+ SmartPass is programmed to run out at the end of the calendar month in which you become 65.

If you have applied for a Senior (65+) SmartPass, it will not be sent to you until near the end of the month in which you become 65.

As free all Ireland and cross-border travel is only available to holders of a Senior (65+) SmartPass, you may have to wait up to three weeks following your 65th birthday before you can make use of this benefit.

Renewing your Senior (65+) SmartPass

SmartPasses are only valid for five years. Check the expiry date on the front of your SmartPass to see when it will run out, as it cannot be used to get free travel after this date.

Around three months before each SmartPass expires, pass holders will get a letter explaining how to get a new pass.

Lost or stolen SmartPass

If your SmartPass is lost or stolen, you should report it to Translink as soon as possible to make sure the card is cancelled and avoid the likelihood of fraudulent use. 

If anyone else tries to use a stolen pass, Translink staff will be alerted.  

Unauthorised use of a SmartPass may result in prosecution.

To get your replacement SmartPass, you should either go to your local Translink bus or rail station, or:

Faulty or damaged SmartPass

If your SmartPass is faulty or damaged, you can get a free replacement. 

Go to a Translink bus or rail station and exchange your SmartPass at the ticket office for a ‘Faulty SmartPass Receipt’ ticket. This will provide you with free travel on buses and trains for a seven-day period, during which time a new free replacement pass will be issued. 

Or you can also get a free replacement pass by contacting Translink: 

The ‘Faulty SmartPass Receipt’ ticket is only available at a Translink train or bus station when exchanged for the faulty or damaged pass. 

Using a SmartPass

You can use your 60+ SmartPass and Senior (65+) SmartPass on all Translink scheduled services within Northern Ireland.

Senior (65+) SmartPasses are valid on cross border bus and rail services, and can also be used for free public transport journeys taken entirely within the Republic of Ireland on services run by participating operators.  You can find details on the participating operators on Free travel in Ireland .

In cases of doubt, SmartPass holders are advised to contact operators in Republic of Ireland ahead of travel to establish whether they offer free travel as part of the All Ireland Free Travel Scheme and to find out how passes are verified for travel.

Your SmartPass is also valid on eligible scheduled services operated by other participating operators within the concessionary fares scheme. Details on these operators are available by contacting the Department for Infrastructure (DfI) Concessionary Fares team .

Free travel is also available on the Rathlin Island ferry service under the Rathlin Island Ferry Discounted Fares Scheme and Strangford Lough ferry service on showing your SmartPass.

Members of the Rural Community Transport Partnerships can travel free of charge on Dial-a-Lift Scheme services through the Assisted Rural Travel Scheme (ARTS) on showing a valid 60+ or Senior SmartPass. Further information can be found on the Community transport and shopmobility page .

Glider services

You can use your 60+ SmartPass or Senior (65+) SmartPass on all Glider services.

SmartPass users do not need to use Glider ticket vending machines but must tap their card on a validator at the Glider halts before boarding the Glider.

Am I entitled to a pass?

There are two types of bus passes that can be applied for:

• Disabled Bus Pass; and
• Over 60’s bus pass

both are referred to as Concessionary Bus Passes.

If you live in the Torfaen or Blaenau Gwent County Borough areas and are aged 60 years or over; then you are automatically entitled to a bus pass.

If you are under 60, to qualify for a Disabled Bus Pass, you must meet one of the following criteria:-

• Be in receipt of Disability Living Allowance (with higher rate mobility content);
• In receipt of PiP, parts 11 & 12;
• In receipt of a war pensioner's mobility supplement;
• Be registered blind, partially sighted, profoundly or severely deaf;
• Without arms or without the use of both arms;
• Without speech;
• Registered as having a learning disability;
• Unable to drive a motor car due to a medical condition other than on the grounds of persistent misuse of drugs or alcohol

If you meet the above criteria and are able to provide evidence to support this, you will be entitled to a pass. A pass will enable you to travel free on all local bus services. Your free travel pass will be valid from the date of issue and will be valid all day, every day not only in Torfaen, but also for travel throughout Wales.

Where and when can I use my pass? 

Your pass will be valid for cross border journeys into England provided that your journey is unbroken and starts or finishes in Wales.

If you are unable to travel independently and need assistance to make use of public transport, an additional concession may be issued for a necessary travelling companion. You will normally need to supply independent medical evidence to support this.

Will my pass cost me anything?

Your travel pass will be issued free of charge, however there is a charge of £10 for replacing any lost, stolen, damaged, worn or faulty passes.

How do I use my pass? 

Travel using your pass, is subject to the rules and regulations of the operators providing the service. You will need to show your pass to the driver when you board the bus to receive your concession.

It must be shown to an inspector if requested. Failure to show your pass will result in the concession being refused and the fare for the journey being charged. The pass does not give you any rights other than those enjoyed by any fare-paying passenger.

Your pass remains the property of the Torfaen Integrated Transport Unit and may be withdrawn by the Council or the operator if misused.

How do I obtain my pass? 

You can apply for your bus pass on the Transport for Wales website. We are currently unable to offer help through our Customer Care Centres but if you have any queries you can contact 01495 742744.

You can apply at any of the Customer Care Centres in Torfaen.

You will need to take the following evidence with you to support your application:

Proof of entitlement for Disabled Persons Bus Pass (Under 60)

• A recent passport size photograph (Full face)
• Proof of residence such as a Council Tax bill, phone bill or gas bill
• If you are in receipt of Disability Living Allowance or PiP you will need to show your valid entitlement award letter
• If you are registered blind, partially sighted, or profoundly deaf, you need to obtain proof of this
• If you are without speech or without the use of both arms you will need to supply medical evidence to support your application
• If you are unable to drive due to a medical condition you will need to supply a letter of verification from the DVLA or your doctor.

Proof of entitlement for Over 60

No evidence is required, you will need to call into one of our Customer Care Offices and ask for an Over 60’s application form. You will need to complete the application form yourself, it will require your name, address, DOB, NI Number / or Passport Number. You will need to attach 1 passport size photograph to the form and sign/date.

Lost / Damaged Bus Passes

Lost, stolen, damaged, worn or faulty passes can be replaced at a cost of £10.  You can apply for a replacement concessionary bus pass here.
