Sandwiched between a weekend of Third Eye Blind shows back in June, was an Amphitheater performance by none other than the beloved Train. I'm no stranger to their live shows. I've seen them everywhere from 20,000 capacity outdoor stadiums to Tropicana Field to intimate settings such as the Mahaffey Theatre for their Christmas Show last December. No matter the venue, Pat Monahan and company always seem to bring down the house.
Their most recent Tampa stop was no exception as Train played a set full of hits to a mostly filled Florida Central Credit Union Amphitheater. (Likely cause from tickets being on Groupon for $15) I missed out on openers Matt Nathanson and The Fray, but got my spot in the lawn just as Train hit the stage.
One of the reasons Train has survived and still has the ability to play such large venues after all these years is due to the vocal ability of Monahan. The singer is an absolute beast, focusing on the vocals and belting out line after line that carries well into the last few rows of lawn space. Pat's antics really make Train an entertaining band to see live. He departed into the crowd for a few songs and even invited audience members on stage to dance with him at different parts of the night.
The other main reason is that Train is a well oiled machine now that knows what the fans want to hear. They play materials from all seven of their studio albums, but they definitely focus on the hits. Even a causal music fan would be amazed with how many Train tunes they recognize. Not one of the greatest hits was missed on the evening, keeping the crowd loud and captivated for the full set duration.
Highlights for myself was poppy '50 Ways to Save Goodbye' right into 'If It's Love' to get the crowd going from the start, as well as honoring their early work with classics in 'Meet Virginia' and 'Drops of Jupiter.' I thought the best vocal performance of the night was hearing Pat sing his heart out on 'When I Look to the Sky.'
The fans were well satisfied throughout the set, and Train even threw in a series of familiar covers to mix things up. This included Aerosmith's 'Dream On' as part of a sing a long encore. Overall, there was no better place to be in Tampa that night for $15. Train is always sounding good and putting on a fun show. I know I'll be buying tickets next summer (or hopefully this winter) for their next stop in Florida.
Report as inappropriate
Train was decent, not as good as they were last year when I saw them at The Ravinia in Highland Park, but decent. As usual, their performance was a very high energy one, which definitely made it enjoyable. However, in spite of that, the vocals and the instrumentation still left something to be desired.
They opened with one of their newer songs and initially the lead singer's voice sounded a little nasal and whiny. Fortunately, it got better as the show progressed. Even so, there were still a couple of rocky moments and at least one where I saw him pull his earpiece out so he could hear himself because he was off key.
As for the instrumentation, after hearing such great musicians at the Milwaukee Summer Fest, the band didn't really excite me or make me say ooh. While they weren't horrible, they weren't spectacular either. I did however, like the background singers. They sounded really good and they definitely added a much needed element to the show.
I also loved when they brought the kids from the audience onstage and let them dance during one of the songs. That was awesome and I love the fact that Train's show is one that you can bring a kid to without having to be concerned that they'll see or hear something they shouldn't. Therefore, in spite of my various caveats about this particular performance, I won't rule out seeing them again because they still have great songs, they always give you a good show and in spite of my caveats, I still had a good time.
I first saw Train in concert in 2006 and I loved every minute of it. This is exactly my type of music. It isn't too hard, yet it makes you feel pretty good about things going on around you.
I especially love Pat's acoustic version of Drops of Jupiter. I really like when they play that one on a show. There's something really honest about simple guitar pieces – it really shows off a person's talent, as it does with this piece by Train.
That said, it's also really fun when Pat suddenly whips out a megaphone to sing "I Got You". I like how they seem so comfortable with their music. The audience really got into it when "Save Me San Francisco" was performed. The audience was part of the song, and were made to sing part of the song. This was a really fun part of the show. The audience really got into the show at this point.
I went to my last Train show with a few people that weren't really familiar with Train, but as the show went on, they really seemed to be having a good time and getting into the music. You just couldn't help yourself.
Train have a way of just making you feel like you wanted to join in. I will definitely go to another concert by Train this year, they're touring pretty hard at the moment. I think the 'nonbelievers' that were with me would also immediately agree to going to another concert!
Saw OAR, James Bay and Train this past Wednesday at the Hammerstein Ballroom. During the beginning of James Bay's set that there were not enough speakers to fully fill the space, but they figured out how to fix that audio by the end of the show. James Bay - Let it Go brought chills. He is so so great live - and even more talented of a live performer than he is a recorded artist. Extremely talented guitar player, and integrated rock with his adaption of Creedence Clearwater Revival's 'Proud Mary.' The night ended with Train - they were... AMAZING. Patrick Monahan has such a stage presence and was nothing but smiles the entire night. The set list was so on point, and even included an appearance from Matt Nathanson. They finished with Hey Soul Sista and Drops of Jupiter.
Pat and the boys at a nice small venue, support was adequate and appropriate for the band
Train played All their best from the back catalogue plus a selection from the tour titled album
Saving the top tune for the encore
A great mix of old and new with Pat interactive with the mixed audience...
Extremely warm especially once everyone started bopping and singing although some breeze eventually started to drift through
Drinks prices were extortionate and the empty plastic glasses caused more issues once discarded on the floor ...concession and security were efficient and friendly ... Park next door .., pre book and save a few quid
Twenty minute walk to the quod along the canal for some pre concert food
I had the best time at this concert. Train performed a couple of covers (awesome!), a few new tunes, and their greatest hits! Pat was a consummate showman and the band was exceedingly talented! I took my parents (very young 63 and 64) for their 45th anniversary! Train is one of their all-time favorite bands and it was an absolute treat to share this experience with them. They drove up from Nashville to see them with me in Columbia.
Thank you to Train for such a wonderful performance! You guys are tremendously talented and put on a fabulous show!!!
Thank you Songkick for alerting me to this concert and making this experience possible for myself and my family!
Train was Awesome. Pat is such an amazing and talented artist. From taking probably 100+ selfies with fans while singing on stage, to him and all the band autographing a Train t-shirt and tossing it into the crowd, the entire evening was one of the best concert experiences of my life. I love when they do covers of other groups songs. Tonight Train did "With a Little Help From My Friends" and Pat brought out Isaac Slade (The Fray) and Matt Nathanson to sing with him. Best version of that song I've heard. Can't say enough good things about Train, from the band to their music, to attending live concerts. They are the best.
This was my 8th Train concert..their concerts are unbelievabley amazing. Pat (lead singer) makes you feel like hes performing just for you. He does an amazing job connecting with the crowd. Every Train concert I've been to has improved emensly. I doubt you will go to any concert and get the same interaction. Mostly every concert I've been to, have gotten something out of it. It's either a signed t-shirt, a t-shirt he threw into the crowd and I caught, a signed beach ball, a picture with him or even going up on stage. The experience you will encounter at a Train concert is unforgettable.
The show was excellent! no down time! great interaction with audience! Great music it was a really fun time! would say a must see! Even with it being so hot out the entire band really went all out on stage train played for about an hour and a half. Matt Nathanson, and the singer for fray joined in on the song with a little help from my friends! It was excellent! Also enjoyed the rendition of Dream on by Aerosmith! During the encore!
This is the hands down best band! Not only do they have a amazing music, but the lead has the other members sing different songs as well! That is a great secure band lead! He always includes the fans in concert and it is very deliberate you can tell its not staged. I will always follow them and their amazing concert Venus. Thanks Train you are officially my favorite band. If you knew my obsession with music..that's saying a lot!

Train is a multi-GRAMMY Award-winning, diamond-selling band from San Francisco that has had 14 songs on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart and 13 albums on the Billboard 200 chart. Train's climb to the top began in 1994, as the original 5-member band tenaciously built a loyal hometown following, leading up to their debut self-titled album released by Columbia in 1998. The tumbling wordplay of "Meet Virginia'' gave them their first unlikely radio hit, and 2001’s Drops of Jupiter broke them to multi-platinum status thanks to the double-GRAMMY-winning title song that spent 10 months in the Top 40, has been certified RIAA 7x platinum, and earned the 2001 GRAMMY Award for Best Rock Song. The group won another GRAMMY in 2011 for their global hit “Hey, Soul Sister'' from their multi-platinum album Save Me, San Francisco (2009), which was the No.1 best-selling smash and most downloaded single of 2010, achieved RIAA Diamond status in 2021 and now 11x platinum, and in 2022 surpassed one billion streams on Spotify. Train has sold more than 10 million albums and 30 million tracks worldwide, with multiple platinum/gold citations, including three GRAMMY Awards, two Billboard Music Awards, and dozens of other honors. They’ve had 24 Top 10 songs across the Billboard charts and six Top 10 albums on the Billboard 200 chart including Drops of Jupiter (2001), My Private Nation (2003), California 37 (2012), Bulletproof Picasso (2014), For Me, It's You (2016), and a girl a bottle a boat (2017). Train released their critically acclaimed 11th studio album, AM Gold, in May 2022 and most recently released a new song "I Know" ft. Tenille Townes and Bryce Vine, which marked their 27th career entry on Billboard’s Adult Pop Airplay chart.

As the world gradually returns to normal, San Francisco rockers Train are getting back on track in 2022 with a new album and tour. AM Gold , the band’s 11th studio album and first in five years, is set to drop May 20 via Columbia Records — and the energetic, lush title track is available now. Not long after AM Gold drops, Pat Monahan and Co. will hit the road for an extensive summer tour featuring special guests Jewel and Blues Traveler.

“Writing songs for two and a half years in front of video screens instead of being in the presence of other humans has been a long, strange trip. And now here we are,” frontman Monahan says. “It has to start with love. Love that goes into work comes out of work. We love this song, this album, and our fans. Thank you for waiting so long for us.”
Train's 'Drops of Jupiter' at 20: Pat Monahan Shares Surprising Stories Behind the Smash
As for the tour, tickets go on sale Friday (Feb. 25) at 10 a.m. local times. As you can see in the video below, Masked Singer judge Ken Jeong is already freaking out about it.
Trending on Billboard
Although Train hasn’t released an album since 2017’s A Girl, A Bottle, A Boat, which reached No. 8 on the Billboard 200, the pandemic wasn’t entirely quiet for Pat Monahan. His Taylor Swift co-write “Babe,” originally turned into a top 10 Hot Country Songs hit by Sugarland, found its way onto Taylor Swift’s Billboard 200-topping album Red (Taylor’s Version) last year, marking the first official release of their songwriting collab with Swift singing lead. Additionally, 2021 saw Train celebrate the 20th anniversary of the band’s Grammy-winning radio smash “Drops of Jupiter,” with Monahan telling Billboard he didn’t expect it to hit as big as it did: “At the time I thought, ‘There’s no way people are going to like this song, it’s just too long.'” Clearly, sometimes it’s good to be wrong about your own songs.
Below, check out Train’s 2022 tour dates, featuring special guests Jewel and Blues Traveler with openers Thunderstorm Artis and Will Anderson.

Train Concert Setlist Info
The song list for a Train show has only gotten harder to map out as the band continues to explore every corner of their catalog and more. On their 2022 AM Gold Tour, Train began putting a new spin on many of their biggest hits, blending covers of Steve Miller Band ’s “The Joker” with “Meet Virginia,” The Beatles’ “Hey Jude” with “Drive By” and Redbone’s “Come and Get Your Love” with “Hey, Soul Sister.”
However, no matter how unpredictable the journey of a Train live show becomes, all roads still lead to the same, satisfying conclusion: “Drops of Jupiter.” The 2001 smash single remains as the band’s trusty concert closer in 2024. Find an average Train setlist from their Summer Road Trip tour below.

Seeing America by train
What it’s really like to travel cross-country by rail.
This summer, I was determined to take a train across the United States.
I started in Northern California, and over the course of 80 hours, 12 states and 3,397 miles, I meandered my way alongside deserts, forests, mountains, rivers; through coal plants, suburban backyards, vast cornfields, and the occasional Big American City — and ended in the very Biggest of them all, New York City.
This idea was not well-received among most of my friends.
Kind of. A truly transcontinental, coast-to-coast train does not exist. It requires at least two legs.
True. A sleeper car ticket across the country will set you back at least $1,000. And Amtrak’s labyrinthine dynamic pricing model can easily bump that up to a cool $2,000.
And most of all ...
But on a warm day in June, I stepped onto the California Zephyr, one of Amtrak’s long-haul Superliners, and began my voyage east.
Before I even made it to my roomette, I overheard a conversation that more or less answered that question: Why?
For my first leg from California to Chicago, I splurged on a roomette, the smaller of the two sleeper options.
I did not spend much time in my roomette, aside from sleeping and an ill-fated attempt at yoga.
That’s because the social hub of long-distance train travel was three cars down in the dining and observation cars.
When you book a sleeper room on an Amtrak train, you technically become a first-class passenger. And in true first-class fashion, you are served three meals a day in the dining car.
In the heyday of train travel, first-class dining served up some of the best food in the country. Menus from the mid-20th century boast dishes like Russian caviar, charbroiled steak and aged bourbon, all served on fine china with shiny silverware.
Today, the dining car is more utilitarian, offering entrees a few steps above airplane food. The china has been replaced with fancily molded plastic plates, but we did eat with real silverware. In a charming touch harking back to the golden days, each table is set with a white tablecloth and a vase of real roses.
Dining is communal, and passengers are grouped in tables of four. Within hours of boarding the train, a friendly retired couple more or less adopted me, and over the next two days, we ate most of our meals together.
Toan and Maria had never been on a sleeper train before and were excited for a chance to see the country en route to Chicago.
They had come to the United States as refugees from Vietnam at age 30. Upon arrival, they quickly realized their work experience back home didn’t mean much to their new countrymen. So they moonlighted as dishwashers and collected odd jobs while getting their requisite degrees.
The pair were now enjoying their well-deserved retirement, which included sampling Amtrak’s dessert menu.
The observation car is where the magic happens.
Over the course of my time on the California Zephyr, I became acquainted with a cast of regulars. Among them were:
Robin, a teacher from Georgia who made it her goal to start and finish knitting a beanie on the train. (She succeeded!) At the end of the trip, she gave me a lifetime top-five hug.
Victor and David, an indefatigably friendly couple from D.C., who liked to refer to me as “fabulous” and “ah-MAY-zing.” Naturally, I enjoyed their company.
Doug, a Texan missionary with a slight hippie flair, who gave me fist bumps every morning.
I also did my fair share of eavesdropping.
But of course, the primary purpose of the observation car is to, well, observe.
Which I did.
At night, I fell asleep to the gentle rocking and muted whistles of the train.
Sometime in the middle of my first night on the Zephyr, we passed through the center of Utah.
It was here, 155 years ago, where the famed Golden Spike was driven into the earth by Leland Stanford, marking the completion of the country’s first transcontinental railroad (which technically did not run coast-to-coast, but from Omaha to Sacramento).
The railroad, lauded as one of the greatest achievements in U.S. history, also set the stage for an era of aggressive westward expansion, empire-building and the subjugation of Indigenous people .
Our conductor, when providing a brief history of rail travel, recounted a railroad operator who would pause the train when it encountered a bison herd, encouraging passengers to disembark to shoot the animals (“kill the buffalo, kill the Indian” as the mantra went).
The famed first transcontinental railroad — that slow serpent winding through the middle of America — fell out of operation by 1904. Today, parts of those old rail tracks are used for freight.
The Colorado River is long. Somewhere in Utah, we sidle up against one of its tributaries, and then we follow it to the source. We then trace it up and up, into the Rocky Mountains.
To appreciate the true immensity of the Colorado River, its power, beauty and significance, you have to sit with it.
To ride alongside it for an entire day.
To follow the river as it slices and swells and shrinks.
The people in the Colorado River know that you, as a train-rider, are watching the scenery with rapt attention. And they like to have some fun at your expense.
The California Zephyr terminates in Chicago, and I get off unsteadily, finding my land legs. Fifty-two hours after my journey began, I say my goodbyes to my new train friends and embark on the home stretch of my journey aboard the Lake Shore Limited.
The remaining 20 hours to New York City take me through the old Great Lakes industrial corridor, along the Erie Canal and down the Hudson River.
This leg of my trip is decidedly less luxurious. For one, I’ve opted to ride in coach, which means no flat surface to overnight on — and, as I later find out, no access to the dining car. In addition, the Lake Shore Limited, like most trains on the East Coast, lacked an observation car.
Most train enthusiasts will recommend traveling across the country from east to west. I quickly understood why. Taking the California Zephyr before the Lake Shore Limited was like eating a scrumptious dessert before a much blander dinner.
I boarded the train at night and immediately tried to get some shut-eye. As it turns out, a coach seat is not very conducive to sleep. It is, however, quite conducive to overhearing your neighbor’s conversations … at all hours of the night.
The next day, after three or so hours of non-REM sleep, I headed to the cafe car (not to be confused with the vastly superior dining and observation cars). There, I spent the bulk of the day observing my fellow passengers and striking up various conversations.
By the time we pulled into Manhattan, the sun was setting. Warm orange light glanced off the Hudson River.
The buildings grew taller. The trees fewer.
Then, darkness.
Soon after, without fanfare, we pulled into the bowels of Penn Station.
And with that, I gathered my things, and, having completed my three-and-a-half day journey from sea to shining sea, entered the warm New York night.

NJ Transit is free starting Monday. Here's what you need to know
NJ Transit riders' wallets will get a break on Monday when a "fare holiday" begins.
From Aug. 26 through Sept. 2, all fares will be waived on all NJ Transit modes of transportation.
The free week comes after a recent 15% fare increase in July, the first in nine years, with plans for 3% annual increases moving forward. Riders using expiring discount programs have seen even steeper hikes.
"The fare holiday is a gesture of sincere appreciation for our customers’ continued loyalty and patronage, especially during a period when the service has not consistently met their expectations or our own," Gov. Phil Murphy said. "We recognize the impacts these service issues have had over the past few months and remain committed to improving the travel experience for our customers."
How the NJ Transit 'fare holiday' works
Customers are not required to purchase or present tickets to travel during this period. Tickets will be required for travel again beginning Sept. 3.
Monthly pass holders who have already purchased an August pass, valid through the end of the month, will automatically receive a 25% discount on their September monthly pass purchase through the NJ Transit mobile app or at ticket vending machines or ticket windows.
Summer of problems on NJ Transit
NJ Transit had a number of service disruptions that plagued customers, attributed to Amtrak overhead wire issues, disabled trains and a brush fire.
The agency recorded a 69% on-time performance rate in June, significantly lower than the usual 80%. The service disruptions were largely attributed to issues with Amtrak's infrastructure, which is responsible for two-thirds of the delays. However, Murphy emphasized that NJ Transit is addressing these challenges with daily meetings and working groups, alongside a $300 million federal grant awarded to Amtrak to repair overhead wires.
Short-term solutions include NJ Transit personnel increasing equipment inspections on platforms, and Amtrak inspecting and repairing overhead wires, track signal systems and substations along the Northeast Corridor.
The River Line light rail service has not been meeting performance standards in recent weeks, and NJ Transit added buses to improve service. The agency is also holding its contracted operator accountable to repair and upgrade the light rail vehicles, aiming to restore reliable weekday service as quickly as possible.
