MSC Cruises ships from newest to oldest — a complete list

Gene Sloan

What's the newest MSC Cruises ship? It can be hard to keep track, as MSC Cruises has been rolling out new cruise ships in quick succession over the past few years. However, it's a good thing to know if you're in the market for an MSC Cruises voyage.

The newest MSC Cruises ship is typically also the MSC Cruises ship with the most bells and whistles and the most up-to-date cabins, restaurants, bars and attractions. It's what you want if you want the very latest and greatest in a vessel for your MSC Cruises vacation.

Right now, the newest MSC Cruises ship is MSC Euribia . It just debuted in June. Although it's barely a couple of months old, it'll soon be supplanted as the newest MSC Cruises vessel by another new MSC Cruises ship, MSC World America , which is scheduled to begin sailing in April 2025.

For more cruise guides, news and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

Other relatively new MSC Cruises ships include MSC World Europa, MSC Seascape , MSC Seashore and MSC Virtuoso. All began sailing in just the last three years.

In all, MSC Cruises operates 22 cruise vessels — up from 17 in 2020. On average, the line comes out without about one new ship a year, though its rollout of ships has been rapid the past few years. MSC Cruises typically keeps vessels in its fleet for around 20 to 25 years before retiring them from the fleet. The oldest MSC Cruises ship, MSC Armonia, is 22 years old.

In general, the newest MSC Cruises ships are far bigger and much more amenity-packed than its older ships. If you crave a lot of activities in an MSC Cruises cruise vacation, you'll want to stick to vessels built in the last decade or so.

Related: The 6 types of MSC Cruises ships, explained

The oldest MSC Cruises ships — those built in the early 2000s — are less than a third the size of the line's newest vessels and have far fewer venues on board.

The newest MSC Cruises ships are particularly known for being bustling, activity-packed ships.

What is the newest MSC Cruises ship?

The newest MSC Cruises ship is MSC Euribia. As noted above, it just debuted in June, and it's currently sailing in Europe.

Measuring 184,011 gross tons, MSC Euribia is one of the biggest cruise ships in the world — only 10 cruise vessels are bigger. However, it's not the biggest MSC Cruises ship. That's the almost-as-new MSC World Europa, which debuted in December 2022. At 215,863 gross tons, MSC World Europa is the sixth-largest cruise ship in the world.

What is the oldest MSC Cruises ship?

The oldest MSC Cruises ship is MSC Armonia. Unveiled in 2001, it's not just the oldest MSC Cruises ship but one of the smallest MSC Cruises ships, too — far smaller than the newest MSC Cruises vessels. Measuring just 65,542 gross tons, it's just a third the size of the largest MSC Cruises ship (MSC World Europa) and has far fewer venues.

MSC Armonia and three other similar sisters in the MSC Cruises fleet (known as the Lirica class of ships) don't have the big water parks that are common on newer MSC Cruises ships. For the most part, their top decks are lined with pools, whirlpools and sunning areas, as is typical for ships built in the early 2000s.

MSC Armonia and its sister vessels (MSC Sinfonia, MSC Lirica and MSC Opera) also have fewer restaurants, bars and lounges than newer MSC Cruises ships.

What new MSC Cruises ships are coming?

MSC Cruises currently has three new cruise ships on order — all sister vessels to the line's new MSC World Europa. The first to arrive will be MSC World America in 2025, which is scheduled to be deployed in Florida . Two more of the so-called World-class vessels are scheduled for completion in 2026 and 2027.

The World-class vessels are being built at the giant Chantiers de l'Atlantique shipyard in St. Nazaire, France.

Related: The best destinations you can visit on an MSC Cruises ship

In addition to the above, MSC Group — the line's parent company — has announced plans for yet another class of big MSC Cruises ships to start arriving later this decade, though few details have been released. MSC Group is also developing a series of small luxury vessels that'll operate under a separate brand to be called Explora Journeys.

What is the newest MSC Cruises ship available for booking?

MSC World America is the newest MSC Cruises ship that you can book right now. While the ship isn't yet sailing, its initial sailings scheduled for April 2025 already are on sale, as are future sailings through October 2025. The two other MSC Cruises ships on order for delivery in 2026 and 2027 have yet to open for bookings.

What is the newest class of MSC Cruises ships?

The World class is the newest class of MSC Cruises ships. It'll be made up of at least four vessels, only the first of which (MSC World Europa) is already sailing.

At 215,863 gross tons, MSC World Europa is the biggest MSC Cruises ship ever built and the sixth biggest cruise ship in the world from any line. The next three ships in the series will be of a similar size.

Unveiled in the final days of 2022 (so close to year's end that we considered it a new vessel for 2023 when we listed the year's most exciting new ships ), MSC World Europa can hold up to 6,762 passengers — almost as many as can fit on Royal Caribbean's giant Oasis-class vessels — the world's largest cruise ships.

What's the difference between newer and older MSC Cruises ships?

Newer MSC Cruises ships are generally bigger than older MSC Cruises ships — sometimes much bigger. As a result, they have room for a lot more onboard venues and attractions than the line's older vessels.

The new MSC World Europa, for instance, has a whopping six pools and 14 hot tubs, making it one of the most pool-covered ships at sea. The watery offerings also include an aquapark with multiple waterslides that integrate virtual reality technology. There is also a family sun deck.

In addition, MSC World Europa has a stunning array of 13 dining venues, including the new-for-the-line Chef's Garden Kitchen (an outlet focused on microgreens) and La Pescaderia, a traditional seafood grill with alfresco seating. In a twist, the ship has three separate buffet restaurants, each with its own ambience. You'll also find lots of venues for entertainment and pampering on the ship, including a large casino and an equally large spa.

In short, the new MSC World Europa is like a giant floating version of the megaresorts you find in the Orlando area or Las Vegas, and it appeals to people who like a megaresort experience.

Related: The ultimate guide to MSC Cruises

The oldest ships in the MSC Cruises are less than a third the size of the newest MSC Cruises ships and lack many of the above features. They have a much more intimate feel, at least in the pantheon of relatively big, mass-market ships, and they hold far fewer people. While World-class ships are being built to hold nearly 7,000 passengers with every berth full, the line's four oldest vessels (known as the Lirica class) are only designed to carry about 2,000 passengers at maximum occupancy.

That makes them a good choice for someone who wants to try MSC Cruises but isn't eager to travel with huge crowds. The oldest ships in the MSC Cruises fleet thus appeal to a subset of MSC Cruises fans who prefer more intimacy in a cruise vessel and don't mind giving up some onboard amenities to get it. They are also often less expensive to sail on, on a per-day basis.

In addition, because of their size, the oldest ships at MSC Cruises are able to operate itineraries to places that aren't as easy for big ships to visit. Not all ports in the world can handle a ship the size of MSC World Europa.

Note that all MSC Cruises ships are renovated and upgraded on a regular schedule every few years, so even the oldest MSC Cruises vessels have newer carpeting, updated furniture, modern decor in cabins and other updates. In many cases, they also have had entire eateries and bars renovated over the years with concepts that first debuted on newer vessels.

CruiseMapper logo

MSC Cruises has unveiled an expanded lineup of itineraries for winter 2025-2026 season, providing tourists with more vacation options from its four homeports in the USA. This marks MSC's largest deployment in the USA to date, featuring 7 ships leaving roundtrip from three states - Florida ( Miami and Port Canaveral ), New York ( NYC ) and Texas ( Galveston ).

A key highlight is the debut of MSC Grandiosa ship in Port Canaveral - the first Meraviglia-Plus class vessel in the USA. Grandiosa will offer alternating 7-night Eastern and Western Caribbean itineraries, while MSC Seashore ship will also offer 3- and 4-night voyages to the Bahamas visiting Nassau and Ocean Cay .

MSC will also start operations from Texas with MSC Seascape ship offering 7-night Western Caribbean itineraries.

Cruising with MSC

Swiss cruise line MSC Cruises sets itself apart from other brands with its refined onboard experiences and eclectic selection of facilities, including adults-only pools and bar areas, Balinese spas and 4D cinemas. The line's 22 ships (with one more on the way) cater to a variety of travelers sailing throughout destinations in the Mediterranean, the Caribbean, Canada and New England, Bermuda, South America, northern Europe and more. Voyages frequently last between two nights and 120 nights for MSC’s World Cruises, which take place once per year on various vessels. MSC's ships carry anywhere from 2,620 (the Armonia ) to 6,762 (the World Europa ) passengers at full capacity, with approximately one crew member for every three passengers.

Although MSC's ships differ in size, the whole fleet receives praise from previous passengers for its sophisticated ambiance and the value of its itineraries. Travelers can choose from three package experiences – Bella, Fantastica or Aurea – which will determine what their cruise fare will cover. At a minimum, meals in the main restaurants and buffet are included in the price of the voyage, as are several ship activities. Food options vary by ship, though most MSC restaurants feature globally inspired cuisines.

Meanwhile, MSC entertainment includes evening concerts, live shows, parties and contests, while shore excursions cover everything from touring around Mykonos, Greece , to exploring Dunn's River Falls in Ocho Rios,  Jamaica .

U.S. News Insider Tip: If you’re looking for an easy-to-access beach experience on a Caribbean sailing, select an itinerary that stops at MSC Cruises private island, Ocean Cay Marine Reserve. This island is easy to visit from the ship even with mobility issues thanks to trolleys and beach wheelchairs you can access, and it’s located in the Bahamas near Bimini. – Holly D. MSC Cruises will sail five ships from US by end of 2023 to 'offer a wide variety of itineraries'

msc cruise ships usa

Travelers looking to sail from the United States with MSC Cruises will have more options soon. The cruise line will sail five ships from U.S. homeports by the end of next year, expanding its presence in the country, and offer more itineraries to destinations including Bermuda, the Bahamas, and Canada starting with its winter 2023-2024 season.

MSC currently has two ships sailing in the U.S. and will add additional ships leading up to the winter season next year, spokesperson Field Sutton said.

"Bringing more ships to the U.S. allows us to offer a wide variety of itineraries, adding new destinations and providing more opportunities for travelers to discover our unique international flavor," Rubén Rodríguez president of MSC Cruises USA, said in a news release.

Where will MSC Cruises sail during its winter 2023-2024 season?

The cruise line will sail three ships from Miami, including the new MSC Seascape, which will debut later this year, and MSC Divina. Seascape will sail seven-night Eastern and Western Caribbean voyages, while Divina will offer a range of short and long sailings, such as three-night Bahamas cruises and 11-night voyages to destinations such as Cartagena, Colombia, Cozumel, Mexico and Jamaica's Montego Bay.

Another ship, MSC Magnifica, will also sail from Miami, visiting destinations such as Key West, Florida and Nassau in the Bahamas.

MSC Meraviglia will sail from Brooklyn to Florida and the Bahamas or Bermuda on voyages between 5 and 11 nights, and travelers can cruise from Florida's Port Canaveral on MSC Seashore to places like Nassau in the Bahamas and Costa Maya in Mexico.

Destinations vary depending on the ship and the length of the sailing, and prices range by itinerary. A Dec. 2, 2023, seven-night sailing from Miami on MSC Seascape, for instance, starts at $399 per person based on double occupancy for an interior room, according to MSC's website .

Why I sometimes pick MSC over Royal Caribbean, Celebrity Cruises

S ometimes work dictates which cruises I go on and at others, I'm picking based on family, friends, or other factors. As a casino gambler, I can generally get on most sailings offered by all the mainstream cruise lines.

Most of the time, if I'm sailing alone, I opt for Royal Caribbean's Celebrity Cruises brand. I have Sapphire status in the casino, which gives me free internet, a free basic drink package, and $500 in freeplay on every cruise that's longer than 3 nights.

Related: After 42 Royal Caribbean cruises, I still make 1 huge mistake

When I travel with most of my friends, at least the ones who also earn free cruises gambling, we tend to book on Royal Caribbean's bigger ships. Oasis-class ships just offer so many things to do, restaurants, and unique areas like The Boardwalk and Central Park outdoor area.

My casino status on Royal Caribbean offers me free drinks in the casino and my loyalty status with the cruise line gets me five drink vouchers each day. There's also an internet discount, but overall my Celebrity perks are better at least partially because I'm one level higher on the line compared to Royal Caribbean (and casino status is not matched across the line the way non-casino loyalty levels are).

It's worth noting that I'd also happily sail the new Margaritaville at Sea Islander, which has a casino program as well, but it sails out of Tampa, which is much farther from our house. At times, however, I also sail MSC Cruises, and there's a strong reason for that.

MSC Cruises offers strong value

MSC has been increasing its presence in the United States. It has been sailing out of New York, Port Canaveral, and Miami. The cruise line will add Galveston in 2027.

"The company’s Winter 2025/2026 season includes seven ships with sailings from Miami, Port Canaveral, New York City, and Galveston, all of which are available for immediate booking," it shared on its website.

MSC Cruises will also have a new flagship, MSC World America, which will sail out of Miami beginning in April 2025, will offer comparable amenities to Royal Caribbean, Carnival, and Celebrity Cruises newest and largest ship.

The cruise line's biggest edge, however, is its pricing. MSC Cruises offers two different pricing plans. First, you can opt to just book a "cruise only" sailing or you can pick one that includes a drink package and WiFi.

There are some caveats with the all-included package. It's the cruise line's mid-tier package which comes with drinks made from well liquor, and a limited wine and beer selection. In addition, MSC Cruises does not allow you to move your WiFi between devices.

That's a negative for someone like me who works from the ship and needs to have his phone and laptop connected.

But, the prices for the drinks and WiFi offer are usually much lower than booking a cruise and adding those items on Carnival, Royal Caribbean, or Celebrity. It's a big enough difference that it's hard for me to convince the friends I made on an MSC sailing — a group I have sailed with a few times since — to ever consider another cruise line.

What's wrong with MSC Cruises?

Price is a strong driver for MSC, but it's not the cruise line's only appeal. It offers some lovely ships with cabins that are similar to what its rivals offer.

It's lacking, however, in certain areas. Food is generally a clear step below Royal Caribbean, and maybe two steps below Celebrity Cruises. Food, of course, is subjective, but main dining room meals are basic, and cruise line, which has Italian roots (although it's based in Geneva now) has mixed success with pasta and pizza.

Specialty restaurants are generally equal to its rivals, but the cruise line nickles and dimes passengers by offering Prix Fixe meals for a set price. On Carnival, Royal Caribbean, and Celebrity, you pay a set price to eat at most restaurants and that includes every dish on the menu.

MSC ships, especially the newer ones, have challenging layouts. Pools and hot tubs on MSC Seashore and MSC Seaside, seem to be randomly placed, making it hard to decide which ones are the least crowded.

In some cases, the entertainment is also weaker than its rivals, with no standard venue that equals the piano bar on Carnival, or the Schooner Bar (piano) and pub (acoustic guitar) on Royal Caribbean.

MSC does have a beautiful private island for those who love a beach day with plenty of space for passengers to spread out. It's not my favorite cruise line, but the staff is warm and friendly, and while some of the onboard technology (like how you add a credit card on the cruise line's older ships), the overall experience is strong.

MSC Meraviglia

Christened in Le Harve in the Normandy region of northern France by famed Italian actress Sophia Loren, MSC Meraviglia (meaning ’a wonder’) is one of the newest Italian chic meets utopian-style cruise ships by the Swiss-based cruise line, MSC Cruises, offering passengers a taste of the Mediterranean way of life .

Sailing with 5,714 passengers, Meraviglia stretches 315 meters from bow to stern, set across an impressive 19 decks with 2,760 cabins, 20 bars and lounges, a flight simulator, 4D cinema and a fully-fledged floating aqua park.

Swarovski crystal staircases float through its glittering Infinity Atrium boasting a two-story central promenade, Galleria Meraviglia , under a giant 480 square-meter LED roof (the longest at sea) that transforms from a starry sky to a virtual aquarium.

It is filled with lavish artwork, quirky cocktail bars, gourmet restaurants, and a myriad of cozy boutiques stocked with over 300 brands from fine jewelers to wineries, crepe parlors, and the Jean-Philippe Maury chocolaterie by the namesake French master-pâtissier, where chocolatiers prepare oozing handmade bonbons, macaroons, and truffles live in an open kitchen.

From spinning salsa classes at Meraviglia Bar to wine tastings, themed street parties, and lucky bets on blackjack at Casino Imperiale , you’ll find plenty to do onboard Meraviglia with four swimming pools, a sports complex, a waterpark, and a towering high ropes course.

Buried at the core of Infinity Atrium, Infinity Bar is surrounded by the hustle and bustle of Meraviglia’s nightlife – but for a more serene evening, meander to the chic Champagne Bar with champagne flute-shaped chairs guarding its black mirrored bar, and an impressive crushed ice display, serving chilled Moët & Chandon with fresh oysters and caviar.

Home to a dance floor, late-night karaoke, and full TV studio, head to the high-tech TV Studio & Bar broadcasting live games, quizzes, and talent contests whilst transforming to a comedy club – or visit Brass Anchor Pub on Deck 7, Meraviglia’s traditional British pub with oak barrels, anchors, dartboards and chesterfield booths, where you can sample 12 beers on tap and snack on fish ‘n’ chips.

Next door to the Amusement Park with two F1 simulators, a full-size bowling alley, a 4D cinema, a flight simulator, and a video games arcade, the Sports Bar bears the feel of a traditional American diner where you can graze on popcorn, hot dogs and tasty milkshakes – whilst the alfresco Horizon Bar serves spicy margaritas under the stars.

Make a stop here for your Serata Italiana dinner nibbling on fried calamari and zucchini before swirling linguine alle vongole around your fork, paired with a Jermann Italian pinot grigio.

With panoramic windows, burnt orange floors, and a swirling utopian-style chandelier hanging above, head to Panorama for a slice of the Caribbean, gorging on Guadeloupe shrimp tails, island meatloaf, and blackened red snapper with coconut rice.

L’Olive Doree

Casual bites are served at Marketplace buffet, open 20 hours a day, with open kitchens, grills, rotisseries, and serving stations stacked with pizzas, creamy pasta, and light bites from China, India, and the Mediterranean, as well as a mozzarella factory area where you can watch it being stretched live.

Bright and lemon with high oak stools, HOLA! Tacos & Cantina serves tasty Mexican street food and Latin American bites from blue corn tacos to crab meat puff sandwiches, Iberian gourmet burgers, authentic beef empanadas, and tamales paired with reposado tequila, tobala mezcal, the ‘king of mezcals’ and bottomless jugs of Spanish sangria.

HOLA! Tacos & Cantina

Butcher’s Cut is Meraviglia's American steakhouse, wrapped in dark oak with an open kitchen and a sweeping wine cellar, serving thick, juicy, tender cuts of 36-oz dry-aged tomahawk and 24-oz T-bone paired with cabernet sauvignon from Napa Valley – complete with a weighty slice of New York cheesecake or bittersweet lava cake from Jean-Philippe’s .

Welcoming just 32 guests, Kaito Teppanyaki is a cozy and intimate teppanyaki restaurant featuring two neon cooking stations with eight tangerine stools on each side, where you’ll sip miso soup and graze on small plates of grilled salmon Sake Teriyaki, and Dragon Rolls with tempura prawns, roasted glazed eel, cream cheese and avocado cooled down with matcha tea ice cream.

Outside Kaito , you’ll stumble across a long sushi bar serving sashimi, maki, nigiri, and thick udon noodles to slurp.

Kaito Teppanyaki

Ocean Cay sits just off the promenade, rich, silver, and formal, with a sliced hull-shaped bar, fish mosaic murals, glass partitions, and portholes peeping out. Here, you’ll find an abundance of seafood from seasonal oysters to imperial oscietra caviar and mammoth seafood sharing platters filled with spiny lobsters, red king crabs, langoustines, and Argentinian shrimp before cleansing your pallet with a bourbon vanilla crème brulée .

And with a high-tech interactive wristband to scan at hubs around Meraviglia and book your gourmet dinners, activities, front-row seats for shows, and indulgent spa treatments, a world awaits you onboard.

Cruise lines changing itineraries as Hurricane Beryl charges through Caribbean

With ports on both sides of the state, Florida is a popular destination for those planning a cruise.

Those plans are being disrupted this week after Hurricane Beryl made landfall on Carriacou Island Monday as a powerful Category 4 storm with 150-mph winds.

➤  Track Hurricane Beryl

The hurricane has grown since then, and is now at Category 5 hurricane with 165-mph winds as it moves west across the Caribbean Sea . Life-threatening winds and storm surge are expected to impact Jamaica by Wednesday.

Here's what you should know if you're scheduled to take a cruise.

Cruisemapper shows few cruise ships in Caribbean as Hurricane Beryl continues westward path

There were a few cruise ships in the Caribbean Sea early Tuesday, with most only going as far south as Jamaica and most concentrated along the Mexican coast, according to cruisemapper.com.

➤ Interactive map : See the latest on cruise ship locations

A few ships were shown in Puerto Rico and the British Virgin Islands.

Most ships were concentrated around the Bahamas and off the east coast of Florida.

Beryl is expected to bring life-threatening winds and storm surge to Jamaica Wednesday as it moves quickly west across the Caribbean.

Royal Caribbean Blog announces changes to itineraries because of Hurricane Beryl

▶  Royal Caribbean had three ships in the southeastern Caribbean as of July 1 and announced it was changing cruise ship itineraries because of Hurricane Beryl, according to Royal Caribbean Blog.

Icon of the Seas, Wonder of the Seas, and Harmony of the Seas have all changed itineraries due to the hurricane, according to the website.

Royal Caribbean's newest and largest ship — Icon of the Seas — departed from Miami, June 29, days before Beryl hit the eastern Caribbean. The ship was scheduled to visit St. Maarten and St. Thomas, among other locations in the eastern Caribbean. Instead it will visit Cozumel and Costa Maya, Mexico. Cruisemapper.com showed the ship off Cozumel Tuesday morning.

Royal Caribbean notified passengers via email of the itinerary change intended to avoid strong winds and high waves on the sea.

Wonder of the Seas, which left Port Canaveral June 30, will skip two ports and call on Nassau, Bahamas, the blog announced. Tuesday morning, cruisemapper showed the ship between Key West and Cuba.

“We’re terribly sorry for the last-minute change caused by the weather, your safety is our top priority," the letter read.

"Please know, being onboard is one of the safest places because we are faster and can move out of the way of any inclement weather."

Norwegian Cruise Line changes stops to avoid eastern Caribbean

▶  Norwegian Cruise Line  altered nearly the entire itinerary for a week-long sailing on its Norwegian Breakaway ship that departed from Miami on Sunday. The line canceled stops in Honduras, Harvest Caye in Belize, and Costa Maya and Cozumel in Mexico, according to a letter sent to guests the line shared with USA TODAY. The ship will instead visit Puerto Plata in the Dominican Republic, St. Thomas, Tortola, and Great Stirrup Cay in the Bahamas instead.

“While we share your disappointment, these modifications were made with great consideration as your safety, and that of our crew, is always our number one priority,” the letter said.

The line similarly changed a week-long sailing aboard Norwegian Jade that left Port Canaveral on Saturday, replacing planned calls in Falmouth, Jamaica, Grand Cayman and Cozumel with San Juan, Puerto Rico, Tortola and Puerto Plata.

Carnival Cruise Line bumps up stops to Mexico

▶  Carnival Cruise Line’s  Carnival Liberty ship moved a planned Friday stop in Cozumel up to Tuesday. The vessel departed on a week-long cruise from New Orleans, Louisiana, on Sunday,  according to CruiseMapper .

Carnival Horizon, which is sailing a  six-day itinerary  that left Miami on Sunday, will skip a visit to Grand Cayman on Wednesday.

“The safety of our guests and crew is paramount, and we are continuing to monitor forecasts and factor in guidance from the National Hurricane Center, U.S. Coast Guard, and the local port authorities to provide timely updates to our guests as more information becomes available,” spokesperson Matt Lupoli said via email.

Disney Cruise Line replaces Falmouth visit with sea day

▶  Disney Cruise Line’s  Disney Fantasy ship — which set sail on a  week-long cruise  from Port Canaveral on Saturday — will not visit Falmouth as planned on Wednesday. The stop will be replaced with a  sea day .

Cruisemapper showed the ship west of the Cayman Islands Tuesday morning.
