We did the Martha's Vineyard day trip. Picked up in Boston about 6:45 am. Drove to Falmouth for the ferry to the Vineyard. Our driver, Jennifer, was FABULOUS!! And the ferry (Island Queen) to the Vineyard and back was wonderful! We did the on island transit and walked, a lot! It was a beautiful day and a wonderful adventure. Highly recommend!

Had a wonderful day trip Boston to Martha's Vineyard with our driver, Jennifer! She was funny, knowledgeable and a great driver! Thanks

Went to Martha's Vineyard. It's about 2 hr drive with traffic. Take the ferry and when you land, there are tour busses there to take you around the island. This tour also picks up at the hotels which was super convenient. I enjoyed this day trip and would recommend it.

We took the Newport Rhode Island tour, and thought it was super and very well done. We were picked up exactly on time, and it was smooth sailing the whole day. Lucia was not only kind and patient, she was a great driver. She had a lot of knowledge to impart, and even had some fun stories and jokes. We saw the Breakers and Marble House. Both are stunning and a must see when in Newport. We had a couple hours to shop and have lunch. This is a great tour to get a taste of Newport in a day!

This was the most informative day tour we have ever been on! Our excursion from Boston to Quincy to the Mayflower 2 and the Plimouth and Patuxet was well worth the money. Dave made the trip so delightful and the day flew by with all of his interesting and factual stories!

I took this tour group to check out Plymouth and Cape Cod. The Cape Cod leg of the journey was wonderful, one of the best places I traveled to in New England and on my vacation. Unfortunately the bus trip was not fun. Mostly because of be people on the trip. Firstly, there was someone learning the ropes of the trip... so she was an employee. She was there and took two seats for herself on a packed bus so she could be comfortable. She was the only person on the bus with two seats. Paying customers should get that perk not an employee. In the bus, there was a family from Eastern Europe (at least it sounded they were. They were obnoxious. Kept talking throughout the trip and interrupting the tour guide. At one point the tour guide threatened to stop talking if people didn't stop talking. That shut those people up for two minutes and then they kept doing it. That threat is not fair... kick those people off the bus! Don't punish everyone else. The tour guide had no control over the tour. Like when we lost 15-20 minutes looking for a couple who didn't make it back to the bus on time. He kept saying if he didn't find them soon he would move on... never did... so I lost time because some people were selfish. At one point on the bus, the tour guide offered to take everyone to a certain random beach so people can see what one looks like. I come from Florida, I have seen plenty. Well the Eastern Europeans wanted to see it. The bus voted and the majority ruled that they didn't want to lose time in any other site for that. They were unhappy and complained and so the tour guide said well how about we take less time from the other places and give some time in the beach... so a bunch of weak people on the bus agreed. Unfair! I didn't pay for this! And you cannot change a vote if it doesn't go your way. The tour guide just wanted to have a rest it seems. We lost about 15 minutes in Cape Cod and a ton for Pilmouth Plantation. We got to the Plantation at the end of the day where we came too late for the authentic turkey dinner that was to be included. So we got back to the hotel hungry, late and had to eat McDonald's! Yeah sorry but I was sorely disappointed.

Took a trip to Martha's Vineyard with some friends and had an amazing time. Prior to getting to Martha's Vineyard, our tour guide, Laurent picked us up from the hotel to the ferry station. Laurent was very educated, funny, and respectful. Highly recommend Laurent as a tour guide .

I really enjoyed a day trip/excursion to Martha's Vineyard. To me, I think the cost for the trip was definitely well spent! No driving involved. You get dropped off to go on a boat to the island, go around the island to different towns on a beautiful day, listening to all the details of the island, get some local shop discounts, some water/snacks and dropped off at your Boston location. It's a great way to spend the day without all the logistics worries..especially if you are doing it with 2 people or less. The tour guides were prompt, informative and good with time management..so you really don't have to worry about anything. If I have time to see around New England again, I would definitely be interested in going with this your company again. They do have trips to Salem, Martha's Vineyard, Newport/Providence, etc...so there's something of interests for anyone!

Cannot attest to the entire trip, since we never made it there. We opted for the hotel pickup. Waited around an hour and a half outside in the freezing cold and finally decided to call the company to see what was up. They then told us that we missed the pickup (even though we were outside from 6:00am-7:45am) and we would not be offered a refund even though they took down the wrong phone number for the call. The guy on the phone seemed very confused why we would even think we would get a refund. Horrible experience and $330 down the drain.

Breakfasts were amazing, the hotels very nice clean and the scenery was just beautiful. The sights were awesome, more than I ever expected. The colors were perfect and the history was out of this world. Saw everything we hoped for plus more than was planned. The fall foliage was at the perfect time and was beautiful. I would definitely take another tour with Caravan. It was a lifetime experience. Everything I wanted to see. Thank you." Mr. & Mrs. S.B., Minot, North Dakota
"Beautiful, magnificent hotels. The views from the hotels in the mountains were breathtaking. The photo stops were great and offered all the marvelous views of each state. Sightseeing was awesome, so many things to see and do." Ms. N.K., Apopka, Florida
"Thoroughly enjoyed my first trip with Caravan Tours - will return for other trips! Enjoyed all the sightseeing opportunities and added ideas from our director, who was excellent and pointed out sites to see for pictures. Gave historical info, added stories, answered questions. Provided materials and maps and was always very polite, friendly and cheerful. We had sufficient time to enjoy the surroundings and take pictures. Enjoyed the variety of activities, films, displays. All the hotels were four to five star with clean comfortable beds and self controlled environments. Just a lovely time all around. Will share with friends." Mr. & Mrs. J.A., Tucson, Arizona
"Over the top! First time to New England and I really felt we covered so much, enough to suit everyone. I’m an artist and took so many pics, I’ll be painting from them for years to come. This was the first guided tour we had ever taken so we did not know what to expect. Tour was GREAT. We thought going in that would be lots of down (boring) time. Wrong. All the activities were well-planned and fun. Tour was set up to provide much to see. The time went by fast and colorfully. We were told by a couple that wasn’t on the tour who saw our Caravan luggage tags that we would have a great time and that Caravan does the best tours. SO TRUE! Thanks for a wonderful trip." Mr. & Mrs. E.L., Aurora, Colorado
"The Caravan value is unsurpassed. We would highly recommend this tour to anyone who has never traveled to New England states, loves history and beautiful scenery. We were fortunate to enjoy a late fall foliage. Photo stops abound on the multistate tour. We really enjoyed the history and beauty of the region. Our tour guide left no question unanswered. We loved the smaller boutique hotels and the condo with the fireplace." Mrs. C.D., Reisterstown, Maryland
"This was my first guided tour, and I feel like I hit the jackpot. Our director shared insights into history and was attentive to our needs. Our team worked together to offer us the best views and colors, even making some adjustments along the way. All our short stops were for rest and conveniences and beautiful photo opportunities. All our main activities were well-planned, with plenty of time to enjoy each stop, and the colors were breathtaking. I truly enjoyed this trip. I enjoyed meeting new people and our weather was spectacular. I will definitely recommend Caravan to others." Ms. F.L., Rusk, Texas
"Excellent. We learned so much more of our country’s history, and our TD was the best. Couldn’t have asked for better. We all laughed and had a great time. We were so pleased with everything we did. All the staff at each hotel were wonderful, and the seafood was terrific. So nice to not worry about our bags and rooms. Love your company and will tell everyone what a great time we had. You are the best!" Mr. & Mrs. S.M., Bayfield, Colorado

10 Road Trips That You Can Take Through Snow-Covered Mountains In New England

It's Shark Week. Here's where you can see sharks in real life in New England

It's Shark Week!

The annual week dedicated to sharks on the Discovery Channel starts on July 7 and is hosted by John Cena this year. But, maybe you'd rather see sharking in person versus on the screen.

Sharks are indeed living off the coast of New England, with their presence particularly felt off the coast of Massachusetts. And you can see them in the wild, and in aquariums around New England.

Here's what to know.

Where do people have the best chance of seeing sharks in the wild in Massachusetts?

If you want to see a shark, Cape Cod is a hot spot, with tours operating to help people safely see them.

Shark tours in New England

"The waters of the outer beaches of Cape Cod offer some of the best possible viewing experiences for Great White Sharks around the globe," White Shark Tours - Cape Cod said. "The shallow, clear, cold water coupled with white sandy bottoms offers a viewing experience that is second to none."

According to reports , a whale watch boat spotted a great white shark in Cape Cod Bay recently; a shark was seen eating a seal off Nauset Beach; an 8-foot white shark was seen by paddleboarder off Provincetown; and a fisherman on the Cape said he saw a 12-foot shark in Cape Cod Bay the same day.

Boat tours by White Shark Tours include a spotter pilot to help ensure a successful trip. The Atlantic White Shark Conservancy also offers trips off of Cape Cod.

See sharks from the beaches

Sharks are known to swim close to shore, particular when they're hunting seals, according to the National Park Service. Which means that sometimes, you can spot a shark from shore.

Some of the beaches sharks have been spotted at recently, according to local reports and Sharktivity app , include:

  • Head of the Meadow Beach in Truro
  • Cahoon Hollow Beach in Wellfleet
  • Off of Eastham
  • Off of Chatham
  • Off of Orleans
  • Sagamore Beach, Plymouth

While these beaches specifically saw sharks recently, sharks have been seen at plenty of other beaches and swimmers should always practice care. Sharks should be observed from shore, not in the water.

Last summer, New England Aquarium scientist Ryan Knotek told Wicked Local that sand tiger sharks are back in big numbers, and they're breeding in the waters of Massachusetts. Knotek's research discovered that these sharks are using Massachusetts waters as nurseries for their young, including around Plymouth, Duxbury and Kingston, and even Boston Harbor .

What aquariums in New England have sharks?

If you want to see sharks up close and in a more controlled setting, consider an aquarium.

The New England Aquarium has sharks that visitors can see in their   Shark and Ray Touch Tank .

The aquarium states that shark "pups" being raised at the aquarium include "epaulette sharks, coral catsharks, chain catsharks, and cloudy catsharks." The aquarium also has nurse sharks in its population.

At Mystic Aquarium in Connecticut, visitors can see sand tiger sharks in one of their larger indoor tanks, and in addition to having three shark species in their touch tanks: the bamboo shark, epaulette shark, and zebra shark.

Are there sharks in Rhode Island? 8 sharks that can be found off the shore

What kind of sharks exist in New England waters?

According to the New England Aquarium , they include:

  • White sharks
  • Shortfin mako sharks
  • Sand tiger sharks
  • Sandbar sharks
  • Thresher sharks
  • Dusky sharks
  • Porbeagle sharks
  • Blue sharks
  • Basking sharks
  • Tiger sharks
  • Whale sharks
  • Hammerhead sharks

This Hotel on One of Martha’s Vineyard’s Best Beaches Was Just Named the No. 1 Resort in New England by T+L Readers

Old-fashioned New England coastal charm and bucolic forest settings won readers’ hearts in our annual “World’s Best Awards” survey for 2024. See the top 10 winners.

Lila Harron Battis is a freelance writer and editor. She was previously a senior editor at Travel + Leisure .

How Voting Works

What readers loved, the full list.

Salt-worn cedar shake cottages adorned with strings of colorful buoys, wooden docks tracing a line from pine forest to glassy lake, hillsides ablaze in autumnal red and orange — so many of our quintessential images of the American vacation have their roots in New England scenery. This part of the country has an old-fashioned, nostalgic quality, and nowhere is that more on display than in its resort destinations. And while many of the spots that Travel + Leisure readers love most are at their best in peak summer, a number of the places on this year’s list offer year-round pleasures for those ready to discover them.

Every year for our World's Best Awards survey, T+L asks readers to weigh in on travel experiences around the globe — to share their opinions on the top hotels, resorts, cities, islands, cruise ships, spas, airlines, and more. Over 186,000 T+L readers completed the 2024 survey. A total of more than 700,000 votes were cast across over 8,700 properties (hotels, cities, cruise lines, etc.).

Hotels were classified as either resort hotel, city hotel, inn, or safari lodge based on their location and amenities, and they were specifically rated on the criteria below:

  • Rooms/facilities

For each characteristic, respondents could choose a rating of excellent, above average, average, below average, or poor. The final scores are averages of these responses.

Coastal charms reigned supreme on this year’s list, with a bevy of spots in Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts; Newport, Rhode Island ; and southern Maine. Travelers can’t get enough of those coastal views and beachy pursuits, but it’s excellent service and robust offerings that set these places apart from the rest. Wrote one reader of the Brenton Hotel in Newport: “The concierge has been impeccable, the facilities are nothing short of stunning. Combine that with the central location, complimentary items, and full suite of services, and you get long weekend perfection.”

That premium on true hospitality held true for this year’s non-coastal picks, too. Quisisana Resort on Lake Kezar in Lovell, Maine, attracts repeat guests with simple pleasures, executed to perfection — one guest, a visitor on and off since childhood, calls it “our favorite vacation for years,” while another raves that it’s “the best hotel I’ve ever stayed in. Perfect location, consummate service, no detail unaddressed, thoughtful in all aspects.”

The second landlocked resort on the list, the Wentworth in Jackson, New Hampshire, also attracts impassioned repeat visitors. “We instantly fell in love,” says one guest. “Since our first trip, we’ve stayed at the Wentworth nine times and seen it evolve from an elegant country inn to what it has become after the renovation: a White Mountain boutique hotel.”

Read on for this year’s first-place pick — a quintessential Martha’s Vineyard spot — plus our full list of travelers’ favorite resorts in New England.

The Winnetu Oceanside Resort: Edgartown, Massachusetts

Situated right at South Beach on Martha’s Vineyard, the Winnetu Oceanside Resort is a beloved Katama fixture, and it still reigns supreme among T+L readers. With 54 rooms and suites, plus cottages, townhouses, and three- and four-bedroom standalone rentals, it’s an ideal place to convene with a crowd. The property’s 11-acre grounds include all the classic beach-resort facilities — two heated pools, tennis courts, a fitness center — plus a full slate of activities, from toddler-friendly sensory play for the littlest guests to late-night beachfront clambakes for the grown-ups. For T+L readers, the Winnetu’s staff are what make it so special: One reader highlighted chef Richard Doucette’s work at Dunes, the on-site restaurant, while another commented that “the service in every way was excellent” across the whole of the property. All in all, as one guest put it, the Winnetu has assembled “a great team of hospitality professionals.”

How to watch England vs. Netherlands in Euro 2024 semifinal

The winner will meet lamine yamal and spain in the final., by sanjesh singh • published july 9, 2024 • updated on july 9, 2024 at 6:59 pm.

One ticket to the final has been punched.

The first semifinal of the Euro 2024 tournament Tuesday saw Spain progress past France , with 16-year-old Lamine Yamal continuing his astonishing ascendance in the sport.

Spain might be viewed as the favorites to win it all thanks to their multi-level balance and structure, but the games are played on the pitch instead of paper for a reason.

Up next is the second semifinal between England and the Netherlands.

England finished first in Group C but have been underwhelming throughout the tournament as manager Gareth Southgate struggles to convince with his tactics and style. The Three Lions most recently beat Switzerland in a penalty shootout after Bukayo Saka forced extra time with an outside-the-box curling goal late.

The Netherlands have been far from perfect, too. The Oranje finished third in Group D, behind Austria and France, but handled Romania in the round of 16 before mounting a comeback to top Turkey 2-1 in the quarterfinal. Defender Virgil van Dijk and forward Cody Gakpo, both of Liverpool, have been instrumental.

July 4th gas prices expected to hit lowest level in 3 years

By Megan Cerullo

Edited By Anne Marie Lee

Updated on: July 2, 2024 / 2:15 PM EDT / CBS News

Low gas prices are something for drivers to celebrate this July 4th, with costs at the pump expected to hit their lowest levels since 2021.

The average price of gasoline on Independence Day is expected to be $3.49 per gallon nationwide, the lowest price it's been on the busy travel holiday in three years, according to GasBuddy , a fuel savings platform.

That could mean serious cost savings compared with a few years ago for the 60.6 million motorists who are expected to travel by car to celebrate the federal holiday , according to AAA .

Last year, this national average price of gas was $3.50, just a penny higher than this year's projected price. In 2022, the average cost of gas was more than $1.30 higher than it's expected to be this year, driven up at the time by Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February which caused oil prices to spike.

Where gas is cheapest

Gas prices have ticked upward slightly since the beginning of June, when they fell to as low as $3.39 per gallon.

Still, in some states fuel costs are significantly lower than the current national average. In Washington, average gas prices are down 71 cents a gallon compared with one year ago.

"For those hitting the road to celebrate Independence Day, gas prices have seen modest recent fluctuations, but most states are seeing prices near or even well below where they were a year ago," Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy, said in a statement.

But De Haan warned that hurricanes and other tropical weather events could disrupt refineries and cause prices at the pump to spike later in the summer.

"While the first half of the summer has been relatively smooth sailing, the road ahead may be bumpy. Activity in the tropics has increased, and projections remain for a very busy hurricane season. Even after the holiday fireworks are over, we'll be watching for any potential fireworks at the pump that could be brought on by hurricanes disrupting refineries," he said.

How to save on fuel costs

For motorists looking to save money on upcoming road trips, there are ways to minimize gas usage while driving.

  • Accelerating hard wastes fuel, while accelerating gently saves gas. Toyota offers this tip : "Aim to take about five seconds to accelerate your vehicle up to 15 miles per hour from a stop," the automaker said.
  • Sudden changes in speed can increase gas consumption by up to 30% on the highway, so aim to drive at a steady pace, Toyota added.
  • Progressive, the insurance company, adds that newer cars tend to be more fuel efficient than older models. A quick tuneup to clear your vehicle's clogged air filters will also enable more efficient fuel consumption, and potentially help you save on gas costs.
  • Check your tire pressure, as underinflated tires can lower your fuel efficiency.
