I really loved everything about this trip from guide to the cruise ship. I highly recommend Hassan as a guide from Aswan to Luxor. His passion for his job made the journey memorable, and I'm grateful for his excellent guidance throughout the trip. You can't miss Abu Simbel tours, which starts really early in the morning and is worth every penny. Everyone at the cruise was really good, and I really loved the ship and the buffet.

Best Of Egypt - 5* Cruise

This trip was AMAZING!! It exceeded my expectations and was everything I could have asked for. What truly made it special was our guide, Ray! He was so knowledgeable and answered any questions we had. If we needed to get in contact with him, he was always reachable. The overall organization of the trip was very good. I liked how we started in Cairo, traveled down to Aswan and then made our way slowly back to Cairo. It was a lot of traveling and the first few days were a lot but it was totally worth it! My favorite part of the trip was The Valley of the Kings. We were there for a little over 2 hours and I feel like I could have been there for days. It was just so beautiful! I can confidentially say I saw the Best of Egypt! Overall I would recommend this tour & trip to anyone! HUGE shoutout to Ray for everything -- If you are looking to take this tour you should see if he can be your guide!

Pharaohs Nile Cruise Adventure - Return Flights Included Tour

Pharaohs Nile Cruise Adventure - Return Flights Included

It was good. In the beginning, we had some issues with the lack of communication in El Cairo. We chose the sleeping train option from El Cairo to Luxor (included in the tour) but we spent 3-4 hours sitting in the train station when we could have done anything else. Also, we didn't know that the train didn't have showers and we were supposed to start the tour day in Luxor as soon as we arrived.... so if you are choosing the sleeping train option consider this, also that you share the bathroom with the people in the same wagon. Once we arrived on the cruise, everything went smoothly. The tour guide always took care of us, gave us tips, and explained everything well. The cruise was overall good, they gave you what you paid for. I do recommend the tour!

We had Ramy Hawdy as our tour guide. Ramy was very knowledgeable about everything and was such a stand up, professional. I've been on a lot of tours and trips, and he's one of the best I've ever worked with. We also liked eating with the local people and visiting the animal non-profit. All of the meals were tasty, the cars were on time, and the hotels/staff were all very friendly. In all, this was our first time using Intrepid and there's a very strong chance we'll use your service again in the future. Thanks again! It was an amazing experience. Best, Adam

Excellent trip, very well organized, and amazing itinerary. Got a few early mornings but totally WORTH it. Our CEO Mayer is brilliant, fun, knowledgeable, and really accommodated everyone's needs. Our group has an amazing vibe and everyone became good friends in the end. It was less like a trip with strangers but more like a trip with friends. The trip was one of my highlights in 2021!

Thank you, Insight Vacations, for making our dream come true! We have had a fantastic experience in Egypt since 26.2.2018 to 09.03.2018 and really appreciate true dedication and top level of professionalism demonstrated by our Tour Director Mohammed Abd Allah, our guide Ramaddan and coordinator Rafaat. Those people were always there to deal efficiently with any request or wish we had and answer any question. We can highly recommend them as well as the company in general as the best facilitators of international travel ever. They provided us with a safe and reliable way to get introduced to the wonders of Egypt as well as it's friendly and hospitable people.

Reviews of Nile Cruises

It was very informative and educational, but there were a lot of activities packed into the 11 days, leaving hardly any free time.
Mina was an incredible tour guide - so friendly and knowledgeable. He is such a kind hearted man who made our trip so special.
One of the good journeys I've taken, it exposed us to a language and culture quite distinct from Western norms. We also witnessed remarkable ancient sites, including Karnak Temple and Abu Simbel, and enjoyed thrilling activities like a hot air balloon ride and snorkeling in the Red Sea.

ENJOY EGYPT’S AMAZING SCENERY ABOARD NILE CRUISES FROM CAIRO TO LUXOR AND ASWAN

Nile Cruises from Cairo

For many years, Nile cruises from Cairo south towards Luxor were non-existent, but in 2015, they began again and are among the most popular trips booked by travelers from all over the world. Known as the “long cruise”, it is one of the few ways to take in some of the most notable sites from the Ancient Egyptian past in style and comfort. Actually, every day of a Nile cruise includes a major site, or two (or three!).

In fact, one travel expert in the region said this of the Nile cruises from Cairo, “The sites of the reopened section are smaller, quieter and more personalized and would be otherwise almost impossible to reach.

They include Tuna el-Gebel (the necropolis of the city of Hermopolis, sacred to Hermes), the former capital Tel el Amarna (built by pharaoh Akhenaten), Beni Hassan, Abydos and Denderah…As well as being chock-full of factual detail [cruise] tours thankfully allowed for time to absorb the sites and scenes.”

And because most Nile cruises from Cairo include at least one onboard expert (whether an Egyptologist, archaeologist, historian, and so on) offering lectures and guided tours, your experience is much richer. Additionally, even larger vessels contain relatively small groups, ensuring flexibility and far more attention from the crew and the staff.

THE SENSORY APPEAL OF NILE CRUISES FROM CAIRO

nile cruises from cairo to luxor

Yet, there is also much to be said about the experience of sailing up the famed river and experiencing the landscape in such a direct way. It is really only Nile cruises from Cairo that allow you to hear the sounds of farmers singing to their cattle, kids splashing around at the shore, and the magical tunes of songbirds all along the journey. Wake before sunrise to see the whole world change or dazzle at the twinkling stars overhead as you dine or lounge on the upper deck of your ship.

Naturally, it is the sites you visit that make the cruise such a must for those who want to get the very most out of a visit to Egypt. Most of the cruises are meant to take you from or to Cairo and will be at least ten days or more. Some head downriver from Aswan and all of the way to Cairo, while some take a reverse route and head upriver from Cairo and to Luxor and Aswan. For those who wish to see Abu Simbel and the many Nubian sites preserved along the shores of Lake Nasser, a cruise can be added to the journey before or after the Nile cruise ends.

The long cruise to or from Cairo does include those lesser-known but essential sites that are such significant areas from the Ancient Egyptian past. If you begin at Cairo, your journey is likely to include a day or two of guided touring around the city. This will mean a visit to the Giza Plateau and such appealing spots in Cairo as the Egyptian Museum, the Khan el Khalili marketplace, and more. Once on board and sailing, a visit is likely to feature stops at:

  • Beni Suef  – The base from which you can pay a visit to the stunning pyramids at Maydoum and Dahshur. This includes the Red and Black pyramids, the oldest structures using the pyramid form.
  • Minya  – Close to Tuna el-Gebel, the boundary of Akhenaten’s famed city and the border area between Upper and Lower Egypt at Ashmunein. The tombs of the pharaoh and other royals are in this area, as well.
  • Tell el Amarna  – The actual capital during Akhenaten’s rule. He removed it from Luxor and established his unique period of worshipping a single god – the Aten – from here. Upon his death, it was abandoned and even partially destroyed. Yet tombs and some outlining structures of the great city remain.
  • Abydos  – The oldest city of Ancient Egypt is here and some of the art is still stunning to behold. Sites such as Sohag and El Balyana are also nearby and often featured in a day trip to the area.
  • Quena  – This is a not-to-be missed stop on Nile cruises from Cairo as it is home to the amazing Dendara Temple. Completed late in the Pharaonic era, it is thought to be one of the finest and most well-preserved temples remaining. It is also home to the much-debated relief known as the Dendara Light.

After that, you reach Luxor and spend days exploring sites such as the Valley of the Kings, the Valley of the Queens and Deir el Bahri. There are also the East and West Banks of the river with its own array of famous temples (including the Karnak and Luxor temple complexes) and so much more. This area is also home to sites like the temples at Edfu and the dual temple of Kom Ombo. If heading to Aswan, sites such as Philae, the High Dam and so much more await.

Ranging in length from ten days to two weeks (or more), Nile cruises from Cairo encapsulate the magic that most envision the moment the words “Nile cruise” are spoken.

THE OPTIONS FOR NILE CRUISES FROM CAIRO

Unlike cruises from Luxor and southward towards Aswan, most of the Nile cruises from Cairo are on the more modern, luxury cruisers. Felucca and dahabiyah journeys don’t usually appear among the options, yet this does not mean a five-star journey is unavailable. In fact, most of the Nile cruises from Cairo are like premium hotels with fine food, beautiful accommodations, attentive service, and even options for spa or salon services, evening parties and events, entertainment and more.

Additionally, many Nile cruises from Cairo are all-inclusive, meaning that ground transport, entrance fees, and all but your pre-arrival and post-departure costs are included in your booking.

Setting sail to or from Cairo is a treat as it is one of the few ways to reach, enjoy and explore some of the most astonishing sites in Egyptian history. The first pyramids, the oldest cities and the most dazzling sights await you, making it an ideal time to book your Nile cruise from Cairo right away.

Nile Cruises from Cairo to Luxor and Aswan

Nile cruises from Cairo to Luxor and Aswan have been meticulously planned and structured specifically for people who want to fully immerse themselves in Ancient Egypt’s fascinating history. Most Nile River cruises sail from Luxor to Aswan and from Aswan to Luxor, which unfortunately means that most Nile cruise passengers never get to visit and explore the many ancient monuments that are located between Cairo and Luxor.

Boarding Your Nile Cruise in Cairo

When you arrive at Cairo International Airport, you will be met in person by your dedicated tour manager. Once you have passed through immigration, your tour manager will assist you in any way they can, and then they, along with one of our drivers, will escort you in a modern air-conditioned vehicle to the port area where you will board a luxury Nile River cruise ship .

After embarkation, passengers typically have the remainder of the day for themselves, unless stated otherwise in your chosen tour itinerary. This free time allows passengers to relax and familiarize themselves with the ship and its many amenities. A good 5-Star dinner is provided onboard the vessel in the evening, after which you can continue relaxing or head out into the city on your own.

On the second day of your cruise vacation, you will enjoy a visit to two fascinating attractions: the world-famous Egyptian Museum , and the iconic Giza Plateau where you will have time to explore the Great Pyramids of Giza and the massive Sphinx statue which are located on the outskirts of Cairo. Today’s sightseeing is broken into two, with the museum featured in the morning, and the pyramids featured in the afternoon, following lunch at a good local restaurant.

Once your sightseeing tour is over, you will be taken back to the cruise ship in time for dinner. Your cruise ship will remain in Cairo for the night, so guests are welcome to venture out on their own in the evening, or they can simply relax onboard.

Let the Nile Cruise Sailing Begin

As a general rule, cruise ships make an early morning departure from Cairo on the third day, and they spend the day sailing to Beni Suef, a journey which takes approximately 12 hours. This makes today a wonderful day for relaxing out on the water, while you are watching the world go by. By the time you arrive at Beni Suef, it will be too late for any sightseeing tours, so those only take place the next day, when you will be taken to see the wonderful Maydom Pyramid, and also the amazing Dahshour Pyramids.

Both these sites are only a short drive from Beni Suef, and both are definitely worth visiting. They are also good examples of ancient monuments which are not usually visited by people who book regular Nile River cruises that only run between Luxor and Aswan .

While cruise itineraries can and do vary from one specific cruise to another, all our Nile cruises from Cairo to Luxor and Aswan dock at multiple destinations along the way.

After spending one or two nights on the ship at Beni Suef, cruise ships then continue on their way, stopping at stopping at numerous other places such as:

  • Tel El Amarna

If you have booked a Nile cruise from Cairo to Aswan, then the vessel you are on will continue on from Luxor, stopping at:

Nile cruises from Cairo to Luxor and Aswan include significantly more sightseeing opportunities when compared to most other Nile River cruises, simply because most cruises only run between Luxor and Aswan.

As can be seen above, cruise ships generally only make two stops between Luxor and Aswan, while they can make six or more stops between Cairo and Luxor. However, it should also be noted that cruises from Luxor to Aswan and Aswan to Luxor include visits to some of Egypt’s most famous and most treasured ancient sites, including Valley of the Kings , Valley of Queens , and Philae Temple , to name only a few.

Nile Cruises from Cairo to Luxor and Aswan – Top Attractions

As has been mentioned at the top of this page, you will enjoy visiting some of the Ancient World’s most iconic monuments, even before you set sail from Cairo, and once you leave Cairo, the sightseeing literally doesn’t stop until you disembark in Aswan. Below, you will find a list of the various places where these cruise ships stop, and what attractions you will be visiting during these places:

Your stop at Beni Suef typically includes two excursions, one to the Maydom Pyramid and one to the Dahshour pyramids. Located just a short distance from Beni Suef, is a site that is home to one large pyramid and several smaller mastabas. The large pyramid, also known as the Maydom Pyramid, is believed to be the second pyramid ever built in Egypt, and it was originally constructed for Pharaoh Huni who was the last pharaoh of the 3 rd dynasty.

Your second excursion will be to the Dahshour pyramids at an ancient royal necropolis which is also only a short drive from Beni Suef. The necropolis is best known for two particular pyramids, the Bent Pyramid and the Red Pyramid, both of which are amongst the oldest and best-preserved pyramids in the country. Both were built during the reign of Pharaoh Sneferu who ruled between 2613 BC and 2589 BC.

While docked at Minya, you can expect to visit Tuna El Gebel and Ashmunein. Tuna El Gebel was the royal necropolis of Khmun. The area is home to several antiquities, including the treasured Boundary Stelae of Akhenaten. Because of this relic’s historical significance, it has since been enclosed with glass in order to try and prevent further erosion. The necropolis is also home to various other interesting sites, including the catacombs that were dug under the necropolis for the purpose of storing mummified falcons, baboons, and etc.

Your next excursion of the day will be to an area which is home to several tombs, including the Tomb of Baqet III, the Tomb of Khety, the Tomb of Amenemhet, and the Tomb of Khnumhotep II.

Tel El Amarna and Asyut

You won’t be staying at Tel El Amarna overnight, but you will enjoy an excursion to see a collection of ancient tombs known as the Northern Tombs. These include the tombs of Ahmose, Meryre, Pentu, Panehesy. After these tombs, you’ll visit the Royal Tomb of Akhenaten, the Great Palace of King Akhenaten, and finally the “Small” and “Great” temples of Aten.

After your sightseeing opportunities at Tel El Amarna, cruise ships continue on to Asyut, where they usually tie up for the night. Asyut is essentially just a stopover, and ships continue on their journey the following morning.

Sohag and El Balyana

The trip from Asyut to Sohag takes approximately 8 hours which means you get to enjoy another wonderfully relaxing day on the water. Nile cruises from Cairo to Luxor and Aswan typically include an overnight stop at Sohag, and then they leave for El Balyana the following morning. The cruise to Balyana only takes a couple of hours, usually arriving shortly after breakfast.

If your chosen Nile cruise itinerary includes a stop at El Balyana, you will enjoy a visit to Abydos Temple , also known as the Temple of Seti. This is considered to be one of Egypt’s most important ancient sites, not least because of the fact that it had gained a cult-like status at one point in history. Sadly, not much remains of the actual city, other than the temple.

After this excursion, cruise ships continue on towards Qena, usually arriving in the late afternoon or early evening.

Your stop in Qena includes a visit to Dandarah Temple which is located only a short distance away from the area where the cruise ships dock. Rather than being a single temple, this site is a temple complex, and it is one of the best-preserved temple complexes of Ancient Egypt. There really is a lot to see at this site, and almost the entire site is accessible to visitors. In fact, visitors could once explore the entire site, including the crypts and the roof for example. However, the second stage of the roof, along with the highest part of the roof, has now been closed to tourists after a tourist fell to her death more than a decade ago.

Sightseeing at Luxor takes place over a period of two days. One day will be reserved for sightseeing on the East Bank where you will enjoy visiting places such as Luxor Temple and the sprawling Karnak Temple complex. Karnak in particular is one of the most popular and most visited ancient sites in the country.

What started off as a temple, later went on to become an entire city of temples, an undertaking which lasted for more than 2,000 years. Today, most of the city lies in ruins, but there is still so much to see. In fact, some solo travelers revisit the site several times during their stay in Luxor .

Your second day in Luxor will see you visiting the West Bank, where you will enjoy visiting more of Egypt’s most treasured sites, including Valley of the Kings and the mortuary temple of Queen Hatshepsut . Queen Hatshepsut’s temple was dedicated to the sun god Amun, and it was once also known as Holy of Holies. This impressive shrine was painstakingly carved out of the cliffs on the west bank of the Nile. It is fair to say that this must be one of the most striking and most fascinating ancient temples ever discovered.

Valley of the Kings features in all our Nile cruise itineraries because it is one of many sites which nearly all visitors long to see. It is a sprawling ancient necropolis where archeologists have uncovered more than 60 royal tombs, including the tomb of King Tutankhamen .

Nile Cruises from Cairo to Luxor and Aswan will make sure you get to explore all the top attractions in Luxor.

All cruises heading to or from Aswan will stop at Edfu. Some cruises include an overnight stay, while others only stop long enough to allow for a tour to Edfu Temple . This temple lay buried beneath the desert sands for more than 2,000 years, and as a result, it is one of the country’s best-preserved ancient temples, and one which is definitely well worth seeing.

At Kom Ombo, passengers will be taken to see the wonderful Kom Ombo Temple which was dedicated to two gods, Horus the falcon-headed god, and Sobek the crocodile god. What makes this temple so incredibly fascinating is the fact that it is essentially a twin temple complex, with one being a mirror image of the other. Other than this, they were built identically in every way so as not to offend either of the two gods to which they were dedicated.

Our Nile cruises from Cairo to Luxor and Aswan terminate at Aswan, but nonetheless, you will still get to enjoy some sightseeing while you are here. Enjoy a wonderful outing that will see you visiting places such as the spectacular Aswan High Dam , Philae Temple , and the Colossi of Memnon . Philae Temple is particularly fascinating, and it features in virtually all good quality Nile River cruise itineraries.

You will experience the highlights of Aswan with our amazing Nile Cruises from Cairo to Luxor and Aswan.

Some cruise packages will also include one or more other attractions in and around Aswan. Also, it is quite often possible for passengers to book an optional tour to the famous Abu Simbel temples while they are in Aswan. Finally, you will be transferred to the airport for your flight back to Cairo where you will be met by one of our tour managers who will then escort you to international departures for your flight back home.

Board and Lodging

All our Nile cruises from Cairo to Luxor and Aswan focus on luxury and comfort. If your chosen tour itinerary includes one or more nights in a hotel, you can be sure that you will be staying only in the very best luxury hotels. However, most board and lodging will be onboard whichever cruise ship features in your chosen itinerary.

Once you embark for your Nile Cruise from Cairo to Luxor and Aswan, will enjoy full board and lodging for the duration of your cruise. Practical Information

The currency in Egypt is the Egyptian pound (EGP), which is divided into 100 piastres. You can exchange your currency at the airport, banks, hotels, or authorized exchange bureaus, or withdraw cash from ATMs. You can also use credit or debit cards at some places, but cash is more widely accepted and preferred. You should always check the exchange rate and the commission fee before exchanging or withdrawing money, and keep the receipt for any transaction. You should also always carry some small notes and coins with you, as they are useful for tipping, bargaining, or buying small items. You should also always be careful and cautious of counterfeit or damaged notes, and never accept or give them.

The dress in Egypt is generally conservative and respectful, especially in religious and rural areas. You should always dress modestly and appropriately, and cover your shoulders, chest, and knees. You should also avoid wearing tight, transparent, or revealing clothes, or clothes with offensive or provocative slogans or images. You should also wear comfortable and practical clothes, such as cotton, linen, or light fabrics, and avoid synthetic, woolen, or heavy fabrics. You should also wear sensible and sturdy shoes, such as sandals, sneakers, or boots, and avoid heels, flip-flops, or bare feet. You should also wear a hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen, and protect yourself from the sun. The culture in Egypt is rich and diverse, with influences from the Pharaonic, Islamic, Christian, Ottoman, and colonial eras. You should always respect and appreciate the local culture, religion, and traditions, and learn some basic phrases and greetings in Arabic, the official language of Egypt. You should also greet people with a smile and a handshake, and use the right hand for eating, giving, or receiving. You should also avoid public displays of affection, such as kissing, hugging, or holding hands, as they are considered rude and inappropriate. You should also avoid discussing sensitive or controversial topics, such as politics, religion, or sexuality, as they may cause offense or misunderstanding. You should also avoid criticizing or insulting the country, the people, or the leaders, as they may cause anger or resentment. You should also avoid drinking alcohol, eating pork, or smoking in public, especially during Ramadan, the holy month of fasting, as they are considered disrespectful and forbidden.

You should always ask for permission before taking photos or videos of people, places, or things, and respect their wishes if they decline. You should also avoid taking photos or videos of military or government buildings, as they are prohibited and illegal. You should also tip generously and appropriately, as tipping is expected and appreciated in Egypt. You should tip around 10% of the bill in restaurants, cafes, or bars, and around 5 to 10 EGP per person for guides, drivers, porters, or cleaners. You should also bargain politely and firmly, as bargaining is common and customary in Egypt. You should bargain for around 50% of the initial price in markets, bazaars, or shops, and never accept or pay the first price. You should also be friendly and humorous, as Egyptians are known for their hospitality and humor. You should also accept any invitations or offers of tea, coffee, or food, as they are signs of friendship and generosity.

When planning your trip to Egypt, timing is crucial. The best time to visit Egypt is during the cooler months, from October to April, when temperatures are milder and more comfortable for sightseeing. Here are some key factors to consider:

  • The shoulder seasons (spring and fall) offer the best balance of pleasant weather and fewer crowds.
  • Peak season brings more tourists, but if that’s your only option, be prepared for the crowds.
  • Summer months in Egypt can be scorching hot, so consider that if you’re particularly heat sensitive.

When planning your trip to Egypt, consider attending major festivals like Ramadan or national holidays, which can impact opening hours and crowd levels at popular attractions.

To help you, I’ve created a guide covering everything you need to know while Visiting Egypt During Ramadan: Insider Guide to Celebration .

Before embarking on your Egyptian adventure, it’s essential to understand the visa requirements and travel costs. Check the visa requirements for your nationality well in advance. Many countries can obtain a visa upon arrival at Egyptian airports, but it’s best to confirm and be prepared. The visa fee is generally around $25 USD.

As for the trip to Egypt cost is relatively affordable compared to other popular destinations. You can expect to spend around $50-$100 per day for a mid-range traveler, including accommodation, food, transportation, and entry fees to major attractions. Here’s a rough estimate of some common expenses:

  • Airfare: $500-$1,000 roundtrip from major U.S. cities
  • Mid-range hotel: $50-$100 per night
  • Budget hotel: $20-$50 per night
  • Meals: $10-$25 per day (street food and casual restaurants)
  • Transportation: $5-$10 per day (for taxis and public transport)
  • Entrance fees: $10-$25 per site (e.g., pyramids, temples, museums)

To save money, consider staying in budget-friendly accommodations. A wide range of options exist, from budget hostels to luxurious hotels. Eating at local street food stalls and local eateries is incredibly affordable, and you’ll find delicious meals for just a few dollars. When exploring attractions, transportation like local buses and taxis is budget-friendly. Consider a Nile Cruise package for an all-inclusive experience.

Here are some unique adventures that you must experience when traveling to Egypt.

  • Soar over Luxor in a hot air balloon for breathtaking views of temples and the Valley of the Kings at sunrise-a true bucket list moment!
  • Camel rides near the Pyramids are a popular choice, but it’s important to be aware of the ethical concerns. To learn more, check out this article, Why A Camel Ride in Egypt Commands a Conflicting Ethical Decision delves into this complex topic.
  • Immerse yourself in Islamic Cairo. Discover its rich history and architectural beauty at the magnificent Al-Azhar Mosque.
  • No trip to Egypt is complete without sampling the delicious local cuisine! Try  koshari  (a hearty mix of rice, lentils, and pasta),  falafel  (chickpea fritters), and don’t forget stuffed pigeon – an Egyptian delicacy.

Planning a trip to Egypt can raise a lot of questions, so we’ve compiled some frequently asked questions to help you prepare for your journey.

Egypt is generally safe for tourists, especially when traveling with a reputable tour company or guide. However, it’s always important to exercise caution, be aware of your surroundings, and follow the advice of local authorities.

For long-distance travel, consider taking domestic flights or booking a Nile River cruise. Within cities, taxis and public transportation are affordable and convenient options. Hiring a private driver or tour guide can also make navigating Egypt more comfortable.

While it’s possible to explore some sites independently, booking guided tours in advance can provide invaluable insights and ensure a smoother experience. Guided tours are highly recommended for complex sites like the pyramids, Valley of the Kings, and ancient temples.

It’s important to dress modestly when visiting religious sites or Islamic mosques. Opt for lightweight, loose-fitting clothing that covers your shoulders and knees. Women may also want to carry a scarf to cover their heads when entering mosques.

No specific vaccinations are required for most travelers, but it’s always a good idea to consult with your healthcare provider before your trip. Ensure your routine vaccinations are up-to-date, and consider getting vaccinated against hepatitis A and typhoid fever. Bringing insect repellent and staying hydrated are also recommended.

Yes, most nationalities require a visa to visit Egypt. However, the process is relatively straightforward, and there are a couple of ways to obtain one:

Visa on Arrival: Citizens of many countries can obtain a visa upon arrival at Egypt’s international airports. The process involves filling out a form, paying a fee (typically around $25 USD, payable in cash), and having a passport valid for at least six months beyond your intended stay.

E-Visa: For added convenience, many nationalities can apply for an e-Visa in advance through the official Egyptian government portal ([invalid URL removed]). The process is entirely online and typically takes a few days for approval.

Important Notes:

Specific Requirements:  Always double-check the visa requirements for your specific nationality, as there may be variations. Some countries may have additional requirements or longer processing times.

Visa Validity:  The most common tourist visa for Egypt is valid for 30 days. If you plan to stay longer, consider applying for a multiple-entry visa or inquire about visa extensions upon arrival.

Resources:  For official visa information and updates, visit the Egyptian government website or consult your nearest Egyptian embassy or consulate.

By following this expert Egypt travel guide, you’ll be equipped with the knowledge and insider tips to plan an extraordinary journey through Cairo and the heart of ancient Egyptian civilization, Nile.

Egypt promises to leave a lasting impression and will surely capture your heart. So, pack your sense of adventure, embrace the rich culture, and embark on a once-in-a-lifetime journey to this bucket list-worthy destination.

Nile dolphin. A dump

Nile dolphin cruise. The ship is dirty. Old and run down. It has been painted so many times. The drapes in the room were hanging off of the stained wall. the carpet was filthy.toilet leaked urine onto the floor and the shower door did not close properly. The food for me was inedible and tasteless. The staff were very friendly but the boat itself is a dump. Swimming pool is tiny and had a thick black grease ring all around the tile we're it had Not being cleaned in ages. I ordered an orange juice which was watered down along with a virgin pina colada that was the same.It was expensive. I would not recommend this boat to anybody.I am dreading my next meal. Photos online on office sleep from when the ship was first built. I don't think they have changed the carpets in 20 years.

The Nile River is breathtakingly beautiful, no wonder the Ancient Egyptians gave it a personality and made it a Goddess in the process. It certainly made us Hapi. Cruising along its course from Luxor to Aswan was a joy reserved only to the rich travellers of yesteryear- now thanks to Explore Travel & Cruises - they have put the Luxury into Luxor and placed it within the price range of the ordinary working family too. Waving to locals as you sail by watching children celebrating Eid festival is a sight I will never forget - relaxing and entertaining in equal measures on the longest and calmest river in the World.

river nile cruise from cairo

A visit to Egypt had long been a hope I never thought would happen. But suddenly it seemed imperative to go, to experience the country while we still can. I chose a ship carefully. The Nile Princess looked to be traditional. Three days before departure I was informed it would not be sailing; I and my daughter were transferred to another ship The Grand Mandarin, owned by the same company. We discovered that all of our fellow passengers were similarly transferred, and all of us were initially unhappy but only because we had all opted for tradition and simplicity, not evening entertainment or loud music and we feared the worst. For no good reason, we were very lucky to be on the Grand Mandarin. None of our apprehensions were warranted! Having got that out of the way, I am writing to say that the Grand Mandarin was light, airy, and spotlessly clean, the staff were very obliging, and the buffet food was lavish and excellent, if anything, far greater choice of salads and cooked dishes than was needed. The cabins were provided with everything. I cannot praise it enough. The upper deck with its bar, constantly staffed, meant that drinks or coffee were available throughout the day. It was luxurious. The temples are simply indescribable, no picture does them justice, it cannot capture their scale or power; their preservation is astonishing, and it is unique to see a history written by the people of the time. Karnak and Luxor Temples deserve more time than we could give them, and Kom Ombu at night was special. Abu Simbel and its preservation is simply mind-blowing. The guide to the Botanical Garden was very amusing and clearly an expert not just on Egyptian trees but their European equivalents. Egypt is very moving as a country, brave and resilient, despite being plundered by successive occupation from the Greeks onward. Our guide, Ahmed, was all a guide should be, and much more. He made the holiday what it was, informative, sensitive, and amusing. He introduced us to the country he both loves and studies, and he was aware of the needs of the group at every point, whether it was stopping long journeys for a loo, or saving us from heat. He is amazing. If you are on a tour with him, you are blessed. Everyone should visit Egypt, for its roots to all our cultures. I shall never forget Ahmed or the Grand Mandarin. It was totally wonderful.

I wanted a Nile Cruise but I didn't want a third rate generic over-crowded (not likely at the moment with tourist numbers) cruise boat jammed up against other noisy cruise boats. I wanted it to be special. So, via Memphis Tours, I booked a cruise on the Ashranda Nebyt Dahabiya and it was a wonderful experience. A dahabiya is a smaller boat mostly with felucca type sails but typically towed by an ancillary motored boat which still means no engine noise. Ours had about eight to twelve cabins and we sailed with 11 guests (German, French and English speaking), 3 tour guides and the crew who handled sailing the boat, cooking all the meals and keeping everything ship-shape. The boat had an enclosed eating and sitting area and a partly-shaded sundeck all in polished wood. There were lots of seating for everyone. There were two crew areas at the front and back of the boat and you could watch the sails being put up and down and the manoeuvring to dock from the sundeck, including the deployment of the "log" when the boat needed to be kept off the shore. My husband and I sail so we find those technicalities interesting. We never had to raft up to another boat on our trip and could get to shore easily. Our cabin was spacious with a king-size bed with bed-side tables on both sides with charging spots. It was nicely decorated and there were some nice touches with the pretty cloth coverings for the tissue box and the alabaster soap dispensers. The wifi was reasonable for Egypt. The luggage storage space was good too and included an extra doona if needed. There was a mini-fridge in there with environmentally friendly glass bottles of water refilled from the larger size plastic water bottles kept on deck to reduce waste. The bathroom was probably one of the best we encountered in Egypt as they had a modern full size shower instead of the usual shower over a bath with both rain and hand-held shower heads. Good water pressure and good hot water. There was space for toiletry kits on either side of the sink The food was cooked fresh on board, even the bread, and included delicious local specialities. Breakfast had yogurt and fruit, fresh croissants and other pastries with freshly cooked eggs an option. Lunch was more buffet style with meat, salads, rice, hot vegetables, etc. One of the lunches served an amazing assortment of stuffed vegetables. Dinners were three course with soups, main courses and deserts. Every meal was fantastic and on our last night the eating area was lit up with fairy lights to make it very special. All cooking used large litres of bottled water and we were given hand-towels when returning from tours to keep hands clean. There were soft drinks, teas and coffees available, included in the cost, while alcoholic drinks could be ordered and paid for on departure. We chose to take the three night cruise from Aswan to Luxor. It started around 1 pm (not 5 pm) and stopped overnight on an island, in Esna and in Luxor which varied from what I expected (though they do warn you it could). I think they adjusted the cruise to fit around the sight-seeing we and the other people had booked in Aswan and Luxor. I had been worried that the last morning combining the East Bank and West Bank in Luxor would be too short and miss out some sights. By getting to Luxor early we had a full tour on the East Bank and another on the West Bank while on the cruise. We didn't miss out on seeing anything we expected to see and seemed to visit attractions at uncrowded times. We all got to see the Philae Temple before our departure and enjoyed the visits to Kom Ombo, Edfu Temple, Esna Lock and Luxor. We even had a chance to take a night walk at Esna. Our tour guide, Abdalla Hashem, was excellent both in his organisational skills and his depth of knowledge. If you want to see El Kab Village or the old Pharaonic quarries of Silsela and its Temple of Hormoheb you need to take the four night cruise from Luxor to Aswan and this is clear in the itinerary. The four day cruise has another advantage, as we were told by someone staying eight days on the dahabiya, that the wind is behind you so there is no wind on the sundeck and it is easier for the dahabiya to put up their sails. Going towards Luxor we still got to experience sailing, and probably as much as you get on the four day tour, but the boat actually had to sail back the way we had travelled to do it. I took two cruises in Egypt. One was on Lake Nasser and this one on the Nile. I enjoyed both very much and found the boats, staff and tours very special. However, if I had to choose between them, I would choose this Nile cruise because the Ashranda Nebyt Dahabiya was a more intimate experience and because the scenery along the banks of the Nile is more interesting, continually changing with jungles, marshes, deserts, towns, sometimes with and sometimes without the looming escarpments of the ranges behind them.

river nile cruise from cairo

The longest river in the world and, yes it flow south to north. Not as wide as you might think. We did a five day cruise on the Viceroy but the river was always close by even when we weren't on the boat. essentially, everything in Egypt revolves around that water that the Nile provides. A must see.

My husband and I recently took a Nile Cruise as part of a package booked with Classic Holidays , I had never heard of Classic holidays before this trip and booked after looking at their reviews . This was without a doubt one of the best holidays we have had , Classic holidays from start to finish were brilliant . We were met by a representative at every point of arrival and departure and the service overall was outstanding . Their recommendations were excellent and I would use them again , and again and again , they even assisted me with a problem I had regarding a purchase on board the cruise ship , which was not their responsibility , but they did anyway . Their customer service ethic is just wonderful .
