Elbe Riverboat Cruise Itineraries in Germany & Czech Republic

Luxury riverboats cruise on the Elbe River in Germany (Hamburg, Magdeburg, Berlin, Dessau, Wittenberg, Dresden) and Czech Republic (Prague, Melnik, Nymburk).

View of the Elbe from Bastei

The Elbe is after the Rhine and Danube the most popular river in Germany for riverboat cruises. The attractions of Elbe riverboat cruises are the cultural sights along the river and nearby destinations – numerous UNESCO World Cultural Heritage listed sites can be seen along the river or on easy excursions. Nicko Tours, Viking River Cruises, Trans Ocean and Phoenix are the main cruise lines offering regular luxury riverboat vacations on the Elbe River. The most popular cruising route is Berlin / Potsdam past Magdeburg and Dresden to Melnik and Prague.

Cruising on the Elbe River in Germany and the Czech Republic

The Elbe River (Die Elbe in German, Labe in Czech) is around 1091 km (680 miles) long. Its source is in the Giant Mountains in the northern Czech Republic and its mouth in the North Sea at Cuxhaven near Hamburg, Germany.

Several routings are possible on the Elbe and its tributary rivers such as the Moldau (Vltava) and the Havel. The Elbe is navigable by reasonably large riverboats from its mouth to Nymburk (Neuenburg) in the Czech Republic.

The main cruises season on the Elbe River is from April to October. However, a few cruises are possible outside this period with cruises around Christmas and New Years increasingly popular.

Riverboat Cruises on the German Elbe River

Elbe River and Canals Cruise Map

Cruises on the German Elbe from Hamburg are fairly rare but smaller boat companies sometimes include Germany’s premier harbor in their itineraries. Currently, Phoenix Reisen’s Saxonia and Trans Ocean’s Sans Souci occasionally call at Hamburg during Elbe River and canal cruises.

Hamburg  with 1.7 million inhabitants is the largest city on the Elbe. During the Second World War, Hamburg was extensively bombed and is therefore a mostly modern city but several historic brick-Gothic churches were restored. The city also have very interesting museums and with the Reeperbahn one of the most famous nightlife and red-light districts in the world. The Beatles shot to fame here.

Magdeburg  has several Romanesque buildings and claims that its thirteenth-century cathedral was the first Gothic cathedral (as oppose to an ordinary church) built in Germany.

Map of Elbe-Havel-Canal

Riverboats cruising down the Havel-Elbe Canal from Berlin and Potsdam enter the Elbe at Magdeburg. Most boats go upstream towards Dresden rather than downriver to Hamburg.

  • Nicko Tours ’ MS Königstein does a weeklong cruise from Potsdam via the canal to Magdeburg, down the Elbe to Havelberg, before returning to Brandenburg and Potsdam up the Havel River.

Dessau  has two sites inscribed on the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage list:

  • Bauhaus sights include the Walther Grophius-designed Bauhaus-Dessau, which housed the school, and Meisterhäuser (Masters’ Housing) where senior personnel lived and worked.
  • The Gartenreich (Garden Kingdom) of Dessau-Wörlitz consists of a series of large eighteenth-century English landscape-style parks.

Nearby  Lutherstadt-Wittenberg  is inscribed on the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage list for several monuments and buildings associated with the church reformer Martin Luther.

Map of TransOcean MS Sans Souci Elbe Routes

Torgau  is where the American and Russian armies met on April 25, 1945 – photos were taken only a day later.

Meißen  is famous as the home of Meissen Porcelain, the impressive Albrechtsburg castle, and a lovely old town. Popular excursions go to Moritzburg, a romantic palace.

Dresden  is a former UNESCO World Heritage sight with numerous restored Baroque and Renaissance monumental buildings, excellent museums, and the Semperoper opera house. (Dresden lost UNESCO heritage status due to the construction of a new bridge across the Elbe.)

Saxon Switzerland  (Sächsische Schweiz) has the loveliest nature on the Elbe. Here the Elbe flows through an area with oddly shaped sandstone hills, pillars, and rocks. Popular sights include the Bastei viewing point and Festung Königstein, the largest hill fortress in Europe.

Riverboat Cruises on the Czech Elbe (Labe) and Vltava (Moldau)

Cruising on the Elbe River (Labe) is a popular addition to the German part of the river. Although cruises commonly ends at Melnik, or turn here up the Vltava to Prague, it is possible to cruise deeper into the Czech Republic on the Elbe itself.

Melnik  , near the Czech-German border, is at the confluence of the Elbe and the Vltava (Moldau in German), the largest tributary. Riverboats can cruise up the Vltava to  Prague  but many cruise lines end the riverboat cruise in Melnik and transport passengers by bus to Prague with its UNESCO World Cultural Heritage listed old town center.

Popular Cruise Itineraries on the Elbe River

The most common cruise route on the Elbe River is from Magdeburg to Melnik, some companies cruise all the way to Potsdam and Berlin or to Prague. A few cruises per year go the full length of the navigable Elbe.

Viking River Cruises ’ MS Schumann and MS Fontane do the Magdeburg to Melnik cruise weekly from March to September. This cruise is usually sold in the international market as Berlin to Prague with hotel stays and bus transfers to the boat added at each end of the cruise.

Viking River Cruises in Germany uses the MS Swiss Ruby for weeklong cruises from Berlin to Prague, or return with the full duration of the vacation on the boat.

Nicko Tours use the Katharina von Bora and Frederic Chopin (both former Peter Deilmann riverboats) for the weeklong cruises from Potsdam to Prague or return.

Phoenix Reisen uses the Saxonia for longer cruises – usually 9 to 12 days – and various permutations for return cruises from Potsdam to the Elbe and back.

Trans Ocean’s luxury Sans Souci follow various itineraries with the boat sometimes going all the way to Cuxhaven and Hamburg.

Map of MS Florentina Cruise

Nicko Tours offer a weeklong Czech Republic only cruise on the MS Florentina. The cruise departs down the Vltava (Moldau) from Prague, turn onto the Elbe at Melnik and cruise upriver to Nymburk (Neuenburg) and Podiebrad before retuning to Prague.

Nicko Tours, which took over most of Peter Deilmann’s riverboats and cruise routes in 2010, is currently the largest cruise line operator on the Elbe River. Viking River Cruises also operate several boats on the Elbe, while Phoenix Reisen, Trans Ocean and Croisieurope also have boats on Germany’s third largest cruising river.

See Best Luxury Riverboat on the Elbe for more details on the boats that currently cruise on the Elbe and its tributaries.

ELBE RIVER CRUISES A history lesson into classic Baroque.

Aside from the new Douro river cruises, a journey on the Elbe River in Germany is Western Europe’s other, least known river cruise. I dare say that most of us in North America would be hard pressed to locate the Elbe on a map. Though it may not be well known, the Elbe River played a crucial role in the 20th-century as it formed the north-south border between what was formerly West and East Germany. Currently, ONLY Viking River Cruises sails the charming Elbe River. A river of historical significance. The Elbe River region was the birthplace of Martin Luther and the Protestant Reformation, wonderful baroque architecture and much more is waiting for you on your exciting European river cruise along the Elbe River. While a river cruise on Germany's elegant Elbe River may not be for everyone, but if you are an experienced river cruiser and looking for something different and an in-depth view of the former East Germany and a short glimpse of the highlights of the Czech Republic, then by all means a Elbe river cruise will excite your senses. Like many rivers in Europe , the Elbe river starts in one direction and finishes in another. Beginning in the northwest of the Czech Republic, it flows west through much of Bohemia before turning to the north where it cuts through the center of what was once East Germany, before finally entering the North Sea. And while it is a fairly long river, almost 700 miles in length, most river cruise programs are centered between Magdeburg, Germany and Melnik, Czech Republic, a distance of just over 200 miles. However, don’t let this dissuade you; most Eastern European river cruise programs offer pre and/or post cruise packages in fascinating Berlin, Germany, or Prague — the romantic, charming capital of the Czech Republic. Elbe River cruises offer historically interesting, unique, and magnificent ports of call to explore. Berlin, Germany. We strongly encourage our customers to add a few days before or after the cruise in the incredibly cosmopolitan city of Berlin. Sure, it's got lots of WWII history, both good and bad, but in addition to Berlin's historical significance, the Berlin of today is one of the most exciting and vibrant cities in all the world. Great food, music and just a super place to walk around and enjoy the eclectic "Berliner's. Ladies, it's also got some of the best shopping this side of Beverly Hills and Paris. Your premier personal travel planner will help you build a customized Berlin package, even down to your own personal tour guide should you desire one. Prague, Czech Republic. In the Czech Republic section of the river, the ports of call include Prague, a gorgeous city called by the German poet Goethe “the prettiest gem in the stone crown of the world,” boasting diverse architecture and a dizzying array of sights. Prague is one of our favorite cities for many reasons. Let me paint just one picture, and you will see why. Imagine yourself walking, actually it is more like promenading as you'll do along with hundreds of others. As you stroll away from an afternoon sightseeing tour of imposing Prague Castle (Which by the way is the largest castle in the world – yup, in Prague !), down the hill towards the river the entire city opens up before you. You'll cross over the picturesque Charles Bridge and enter into the historic Old Town district (a UNESCO World Heritage Site). By this time, of course, you'll be ready to eat at one of the many outdoor restaurants that line the main square. Please, reward yourself with a cold bottle of Czech beer while sampling “knedliky,” traditional Czech potato dumplings. FYI — If you've never had a Czech beer, well my friends, you are in for a real treat! When you book with Premier, we'll provide you with our exclusive list of cool places to enjoy lunch or dinner in Prague... plus much, much more! Potsdam. Dresden. Meissen. Litomerice, the "Garden of Bohemia, and more. A river cruise on the Elbe is truly a wonderful way to experience this region. A cruise on the Elbe (view Viking's day-by-day itinerary ) is so much more than great cities such as Prague and Berlin. It is a health and holiday resort such as Bad Schandau; dramatic landscapes and natural beauty as you sail between the sandstone cliffs of Germany’s “Saxon Switzerland;” the world renowned potteries in Meissen; the baroque splendor of Dresden, left almost completely in ruins as a result of allied bombing during the latter days of World War II, but now almost totally restored to its former grandeur; and a host of UNESCO World Heritage sites including the complex of Palaces and Parks in Potsdam and Berlin, and the memorials to Martin Luther in Wittenberg.

elbe river cruises prague berlin

On every day of your cruise, you will become completely enchanted by the Elbe as you drift past majestic sandstone mountains, ornate Gothic castles, and modern cities that are connected to the past by remnants of medieval monuments and architecture. There is simply no better way to discover the former East Germany and the Czech Republic's past and present than on the banks of the Elbe River. Much like the Seine River and the Douro River cruise itineraries, Elbe River cruises are not offered by all river cruise lines. Therefore, you’ll want to speak to one of our Premier River Cruises experts soon to ensure we get the perfect date and ship that matches your needs and desires.

Join us as we discover the natural beauty of former East Germany’s dramatic landscape whilst we cruise along the Elbe River from historic Berlin to beautiful Prague. For those contemplating a tour of Middle Europe, the usual option is a land based coach tour offering overnight stops and long road journeys. This attractive eight night itinerary offers an ideal alternative of relatively short journeys by road, whilst the major part of the journey is undertaken aboard our delightful vessel the MS Elbe Princesse II which we have chartered for our sailings from our longstanding associates, Croisi Europe. Accommodating a maximum of just 74 passengers and with a shallow draught, the vessel is ideally suited for our river cruise.

Our journey will take us from the vibrant city of Berlin to historic Magdeburg, Luther’s hometown of Wittenberg, the famous porcelain town of Meissen, culturally rich Dresden and through the lovely Elbe Sandstone Mountains, where the river has cut a deep valley through sandstone rocks, ending in the graceful Czech capital of Prague. This is the perfect trip for those who enjoy seeing something different every day. Our floating hotel, the MS Elbe Princesse II transports you in considerable comfort between the two great cities of Berlin and Prague. The slow speed of the vessel allows you to absorb the changing landscape of town and country and observe everyday life along the river.

Elbe Princesse II

For our journey along the Elbe we have chartered the delightful MS Elbe Princesse II. Launched in 2018, this modern vessel is designed to navigate the challenging conditions of the Elbe River using advanced engineering technologies. The vessel accommodates a maximum of 74 passengers, providing a warm and intimate atmosphere on board. With plenty of light and a large Sun Deck, there is ample opportunity to watch the world gently pass by as you relax on board your comfortable floating hotel.

Our morning guided tour will include the historically significant cathedral and the Monastery of Our Lady, the town hall, Guericke Fountain, Old Market Square and of course, the Green Citadel. Return to the vessel for lunch and continue our sailing.

Wittenberg was the home of Martin Luther and the centre of the Protestant Reformation. It was here at the Schlosskirche in 1517 that Luther nailed his 95 Theses in opposition to the Roman Catholic Church. On our half day excursion we will take a walk through the old town. Return to the ship for lunch and a leisurely afternoon sailing to Meissen.

Sail this afternoon to Dresden where we arrive in the late afternoon and moor overnight.

Day 6 Dresden.

We will have the full day to explore this wonderful city known as ‘Florence of the Elbe’. Our guided morning tour will include the historic centre, the Frauenkirche and the Baroque Church of our Lady, which still shows signs of the Allied bombing during World War II. After lunch on board there will be the opportunity to explore this striking city independently.

Day 7 Saxon Switzerland.

The 10 best places to go on a river cruise in Europe

Jun 7, 2024 • 8 min read

Cruising down a quiet, traffic-free river, surrounded by scenic riverfront views is an ideal way to see Europe . You can sip your wine while watching picture-perfect scenery breeze past – taking in castles, medieval villages and fields of flowers.

By necessity, European riverboats are small and passenger numbers are often fewer than 200, making these cruises a far more social and intimate experience. There’s also plenty to do and see onshore, and with more frequent stops you can enjoy more onshore activities. Cruise lines are now also offering more immersive learning experiences such as cooking classes and home visits, or activities like bicycle trips and long hikes.

The hardest part is choosing where to go — which is why we've rounded up the 10 best places to go on a European river cruise. (Once you've chosen your cruise, check out our definitive cruise packing guide .)

River cruise boats float down a village-lined river in Germany.

1. Northern Rhine (Germany)

From gorgeous river meanders and noble German cities

The northern section of the Rhine features dramatic landscapes and a host of interesting towns. Cologne (Köln), Germany ’s fourth-largest city, offers numerous attractions starting with its famous cathedral, while Koblenz, at the confluence of the Rhine and Moselle Rivers, is a park- and flower-filled delight. Heading south, the Rhine meanders between hillside castles and steep fields of wine-producing grapes. Idyllic villages appear around each bend, their half-timbered houses and Gothic steeples seemingly plucked from a fairy tale. Scarcely damaged during WWII, handsome Speyer is crowned by a magnificent Romanesque cathedral.

2. Southern Rhine (France, Germany & Switzerland)

Explore intriguing towns in this border land

The Southern Rhine forms the border between Germany and France before becoming Switzerland ’s northern frontier. Strasbourg is the perfect overture to all that is idiosyncratic about Alsace – walking a fine tightrope between France and Germany, between a medieval past and a progressive future. Further south, the Black Forest spills into Alsace in the German town of Breisach. Unsurprisingly, given its geographical and cultural proximity to France, the locals here have a passion for a good bottle of wine. Basel, at the juncture of the French, German and Swiss borders, is perhaps where Switzerland’s Franco-Germanic roots are most evident.

3. Rhône (France)

Indulge in gourmet experiences cruising the south of France

Commanding a strategic spot at the confluence of the Rhône and Saône Rivers, grand old Lyon is France’s gastronomic capital. Downstream, the Rhône forges past Vienne’s Roman ruins and the centuries-old Côtes du Rhône vineyards, opening to sunny vistas of fruit orchards, lavender fields and the distant Alps as it continues south. During the 14th century, the Provençal town of Avignon was the center of the Roman Catholic world. Its impressive legacy of ecclesiastical architecture most notably includes the soaring, World Heritage-listed Palais des Papes .

Sunset's golden light signs on the Italianite city of Passau and the Danube river.

4. Western Danube (Austria & Germany)

Romantic landscapes in the heart of Europe

The baroque streetscapes and imperial palaces set the stage for Vienna ’s artistic and musical masterpieces alongside its coffee-house culture and vibrant epicurean and design scenes. Moving into Germany, the Danube gently winds its way to the Italianate city of Passau . Top billing in eastern Bavaria goes to Regensburg, a former capital and one of Germany’s prettiest and liveliest cities. Nuremberg (Nürnberg), Bavaria’s second-largest city and the unofficial capital of Franconia, is an energetic place with a history that ranges from undeclared capital of the Holy Roman Empire to the trials that judged Nazi war crimes.

5. Eastern Danube (Hungary & Serbia)

Travel a cross-section of Europe’s less-touristed east

The two great cities of this stretch of the Danube are the capitals of Hungary and Serbia respectively. Budapest has something for everyone – from dramatic history and flamboyant architecture to healing thermal waters. Outspoken, adventurous, proud and audacious: Belgrade ("White City") has a gritty exuberance and eclectic architecture making it one of Europe’s most happening cities today. While it hurtles towards a brighter future, its past unfolds before your eyes: socialist blocks are squeezed between art nouveau masterpieces and remnants of the Habsburg legacy contrast with Ottoman relics.

Lush green vineyards line the banks of the Duoro.

6. Douro (Portugal)

See spectacular terraced vineyards, the home of port wine

The Douro region, home to port wine, is simply one of the most glorious spots on earth. The Douro Valley showcases steep terraced vineyards carved into mountains, granite bluffs, whitewashed quintas (estates) and 18th-century wine cellars that draw visitors from around the world. Humble-yet-opulent Porto entices with its higgledy-piggledy medieval center, divine food and wine, and charismatic locals. Its charms are as subtle as the nuances of an aged tawny port, best savored slowly.

7. Elbe (Czech Republic & Germany)

A little-cruised but picturesque stretch of Central Europe

Covering the Czech Republic and a thick slice of eastern Germany, Elbe cruises are under-the-radar options. Prague , not on the Elbe but usually included on river cruises, contends with cities like Budapest and Paris in terms of beauty. Its maze of cobbled lanes and hidden courtyards is perfect for the aimless wanderer. The classic view of Dresden from the Elbe’s northern bank takes in spires, towers and domes belonging to palaces, churches and stately buildings: hard to believe that the city was all but wiped off the map by Allied bombings in 1945. While the city of Wittenberg is first and foremost about Martin Luther, the monk who triggered the German Reformation in 1517.

The pedestrian Pont des Arts crosses the River Seine, linking the Palais du Louvre (shown) and the Institut de France

8. Seine (France)

Cruise out of Paris through northern France

Paris has a timeless familiarity, with instantly recognizable architectural icons, memorable cuisine and chic boutiques. Dining is a quintessential part of the Parisian experience, and its art repository is one of the best, showcasing priceless treasures in palatial museums. Don't miss Rouen is one of Normandy’s most engaging and historically rich destinations, with its soaring Gothic cathedral, beautifully restored medieval quarter, excellent museums and vibrant cultural life. At the mouth of the Seine, Le Havre is a love letter to modernism, evoking France’s postwar energy and optimism.

9. Main (Germany)

A seductive German river connecting to the Rhine and Danube

Rising in Franconia and joining the Rhine near Mainz, the Main (pronounced "mine") is the longest German-only river. From Bamberg to its confluence, it travels some 400km through locks and picturesque scenery, dotted with historic towns. Frankfurt ’s skyscrapers are quite a contrast to the picturesque towns that follow, though it too has a rather traditional and charming old town. Scenic Würzburg is renowned for its art, architecture and delicate wines. A disarmingly beautiful architectural masterpiece, Bamberg’s entire Altstadt is a UNESCO World Heritage site.

A river flows through lush farmland in Germany.

10. Moselle (Germany)

An intimate stretch of the wine-producing German region

Having traversed France and Luxembourg , the Moselle heads through Germany to meet its destiny with the Rhine at Koblenz. It’s a very pretty stretch of river flanked by vineyards, and makes for great leisurely cruising and exploration. With an astounding nine UNESCO World Heritage sites, gorgeous Trier shelters Germany’s finest ensemble of Roman monuments, and is enlivened by a characterful medieval center and large student population. Bernkastel-Kues are lovely twin settlements in the heart of wine country, while Cochem’s castle and pretty buildings make it a visual highlight of the Moselle .

How do I choose a route for a European river cruise?

The two major rivers for European cruises are the Rhine and the Danube. Together, they were once the northern boundary of the Roman Empire. Rhine cruises often run from Amsterdam to Basel, following the course of the river through Germany. Danube cruises start in southern Germany, wend their way through Bratislava, Slovakia; Linz and Vienna, Austria; and Belgrade, Serbia; then skirt the Bulgarian and Romanian border to reach the Black Sea.

While many first-time European river cruisers stick to these two rivers, there are many other options available. In Western Europe, you can cruise through the French countryside on the Rhône and Seine, or check out the vineyards of Portugal on the Douro.

Even on the same river, distinct routes can be offered. One company might zip up the Rhine, allowing you to see the highlights in a few days; another might take longer, exploring smaller places along the way and offering more time for onshore experiences. You'll need to decide whether you’d like to get a look at more destinations, or more of a feel for fewer places.

When is the best time to go on a European river cruise?

Cruises on European rivers tend to begin in the spring, around March, and go through to October. Some cruises, operating in areas where Christmas markets are a feature, run right through December but inclement weather or river flooding could put a dampener on plans. Winter cruises tend to focus on places where Christmas experiences are on offer. Shorter daylight hours mean you’ll see less scenery, but the charm of the festive season has its own appeal.

Choosing your season is very much a matter of personal preference, and there are pros and cons for each season. Summer cruises offer the most spectacular scenery, the longest daylight hours and the best weather, but the towns you visit will be far busier and you won’t be alone in port; in some smaller places, you may have to scramble across the decks of other boats to reach the shore.

Spring and autumn mean less time around the pool on the top deck, but quieter times ashore. Expect rains in spring, but also blooming flowers. Autumn is a great time to cruise the Douro, with grapes being picked and clement temperatures.

The world’s most unusual river cruises

R iver cruising is changing. More and more of us are discovering how practical, affordable and relaxing a voyage down a lovely waterway can be, and the world’s shipyards have responded in kind, churning out an armada of new vessels to cope with demand. This is wonderful, in many ways – but it does also mean that many of the most popular routes are now congested as never before.

But there is a silver lining: as a result, many cruise lines are now expanding their offerings, looking to more unusual rivers in less-visited regions , and compiling fascinating, adventurous itineraries which delve well below the surface.

If you’ve ticked off the usual haunts and fancy striking out into unchartered (almost) waters, the below sailings might just be right up your stream.

West Africa

Sailing 250 miles up a west African river in an A-list-worth megayacht is a unique experience, to say the least. Islands made of clamshells and mysterious stone burial grounds thousands of years old are amongst the wonders that await in The Gambia . Rarely visited small villages and towns dot the riverbanks, allowing passengers to experience the pace of everyday life here, whilst canoe excursions deep into the shallow side rivers provide opportunities to get up close to the abundant wildlife.

Variety Cruises (0208 324 3117; seafarercruises.co.uk) has the 10-day Rivers of West Africa cruise from £3,167 per person. Price includes flights, transfers, and two nights in Dakar. Calling at Dakar, Banjui, Kantaur, Gambia River National Park, Kaur, Tendaba and Jannanbureh. Departs January 16, 2025.

If the idea of having an adventure in nature appeals, but you’re not keen to forgo your creature comforts, the Ecuadorian jungle may, somewhat unexpectedly, be just the place for you. This cruise visits the most biodiverse place on earth, Yasuní National Park, a record-breaking World Biosphere Reserve that’s home to almost 600 bird species and 150 types of amphibian. Grab your binoculars and take to canoes for one of the Amazon Rain Forest’s most spectacular shows as macaws, parakeets and parrots gather to put on a show.

Rainforest Cruises (00 1 888 215 3555) has the eight-day Anakonda Napo River cruise from £5,195 per person. Price includes domestic flights, transfers, night glamping in the jungle, WiFi, gratuities and port charges. Calling at Quito, Coca, Providencia, El Retiro, Pañacocha, Turín, Tiputini and Rocafuerte. Departs November 13, 2024.

Chobe River

Southern africa.

This cruise offers a chance to see Africa’s “Big Five” from the comfort of a private boat safari. As you drift sedately down the Chobe River, you’ll likely see elephants come to drink, while hippos and crocodiles bask in the sun on the riverbank. There is an exclusive picnic and safari inside the Chobe National Park itself, and a visit to the Kruger National Park, plus a two night stay at the majestic Victoria Falls.

Panache Cruises (0800 520 2250; panachecruises.com) has the 12-night Wildlife and the Falls cruise from £11,492 per person. Including flights, some excursions, beer and wine with lunch and dinner, daily cocktail hour and WiFi. Calling at Johannesburg, Chobe River, Chobe National Park, Victoria Falls, Kruger National Park. Departs November 10, 2024.

Potomac River

United states .

Taking in the “Historic Triangle” of Williamsburg, Yorktown and Jamestown on a round-trip sailing from Washington DC , this cruise is a wonderful opportunity to get to grips with the region’s historical significance and natural beauty.

You’ll visit the must-see sites of the capital, plus George Washington’s home at Mount Vernon, Arlington National Cemetery and Harriet Tubman’s Underground Railroad exhibit, as well as sailing on an authentic “skipjack” – a traditional fishing boat – through the Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge.

American Cruise Lines (0800 021 3172; americancruiselines.com ) has the 11-day American Revolution cruise from £6,499 per person. Price includes flights, overseas transfers, one-night pre-cruise hotel stay in Washington, beer and wine with lunch and dinner, WiFi, gratuities and port charges. Calling at Washington DC, Annapolis, St Michaels, Cambridge, Norfolk, Williamsburg/Yorktown and Mount Vernon. Departs October 9, 2024.

The Viltava is often referred to as “The Czech National River”, winding as it does through Bohemia and the Czech capital, Prague , where this cruise offers the chance to explore cobbled streets, Prazsky hrad (Prague Castle) and the magnificent Old Town Square, home of the Astronomical Clock, a masterpiece of 15 th century science and technology.

From there, it is onwards to market town Stechovice, where you will visit the art nouveau-style Church of Saint John the Baptist, built in 1911, then onto Melnik, for a tour of one of the most beautiful Renaissance castles in all of Bohemia. Finally, the cruise floats gently into Dresden – the Florence of the Elbe.

CroisiEurope (01756 691269; croisieurope.co.uk) has the seven-day Prague, Dresden and the Castles of Bohemia cruise from £1,414 per person. Price includes return flights, all meals, drinks and port fees. Calling at Prague, Stechovice, Melnik and Dresden . Departs July 31, 2024

Brahmaputra River

Tibet, india and bangladesh  .

Sailing just below the Himalayan mountain Kingdom of Bhutan, this cruise begins in the sprawling Indian city of Guwahati, where you’ll have the chance to visit ancient Hindu temples, before stopping at three separate National Parks to search for tigers and the Indian Rhinoceros. Look out for the almost-blind Brahmaputra River Dolphins on the way to Majuli Island – renowned for its colourful manuscript painting and masks – whilst the waterfalls and botanical gardens of Jeypore, “The City of the Freshwater Lakes”, perfectly showcase frenetic India’s lush, natural side.

Fred Holidays (0800 988 3369; fredholidays.co.uk) has the 10-night Full Brahmaputra cruise from £4,321 per person. Price includes return international flights, transportation throughout, and internal flights from Jaipur to Kolkata. Calling at Guwahati, Silghat, Kaziranga, Majuli, Dibru Saikhowa, Jeypore and Dibrugarh. Departs October 14, 2024.

The Magdalena

On this cruise, you’ll venture deep into Colombian culture, soaking up colonial architecture in Cartagena, one of South America’s oldest cities, then exploring the historic Unesco World Heritage centre of Mompox, which grew from the Conquistadors gold and silver bullion storage. You’ll finish in Barranquilla – home to musicians, writers and painters and, as such, awash with fascinating museums and cultural sites. If a week doesn’t seem long enough, you’re in luck – this sailing comes with the option of adding a pre-cruise trip to Medellín and Cartagena, or a post-cruise excursion in Panama City.

AmaWaterways (0800 520 2250; amawaterways.co.uk) has the seven-day Wonders of Colombia cruise from £5,240 per person. Price includes return flights, Wi-Fi and Wellness programme, Calling at Cartagena, Mompox, Magangue and Barranquilla. Departs January 18, 2025.
