Your Complete BuDa (Bukidnon-Davao) Travel Guide: Spots To Visit, Itinerary and Tips

by carrentaldavao | Jun 20, 2020 | Blog - Car Rental Davao | 0 comments

buda bukidnon tourist spots

From being an off-the-beaten destination, the Mindanao region has over the years become a bucket list target for local and foreign travelers. To say that it’s the best in the country is an understatement — it is more than that.

From its beautiful and scenic highlands and islands to its picturesque and pristine beaches, there’s no denying that the region has a lot to offer, and we have covered many of them here at Car Rental Davao .

One of the places that really encapsulate the beauty of Mindanao is BuDa. To start, BuDa is short for Bukidnon-Davao and it essentially is the boundary that links the province of Bukidnon and the city of Davao. It has since become a go-to place for tourists and vacationers, thanks to its stunning landscape and relaxing scenery.

Surrounded by mountain ranges, green and lush forests and a stunning view of the tallest mountain in the Philippines — Mount Apo — it is considered the “Baguio of the South.” That’s a fair comparison because like that city up north, BuDa is also shrouded in fog and is enveloped in cold weather all year round. Likewise, it is also elevated at 4000m above sea level, making it a haven for those who want to escape the heat in the city.

Last year, this author had a chance to visit BuDa for the first time. I had also planned to return this year, but my plans were disrupted by COVID-19. While travel remains restricted across the country, allow me to share with you my travel experience.

How to get to BuDa

Getting to BuDa is easy, and Car Rental Davao will make it even easier for you. Rent a car from us and have a comfortable trip. We have everything from sedans to SUVs to vans, all premium but cheap rental cars.

If you’re a tourist or visitor from the north, we can arrange an airport car rental for you and have the unit delivered to Davao airport. If you’re already in the city, we can also drop off the unit at your location.

If you intend to stay in BuDa for a long time, we can also offer special car rental deals for you — just contact us directly, and we will make the arrangement for you.

Normally, it will take you at least 3 hours by bus, but by renting a car from us, you can cut the travel time down to 2 hours or even less.

On your way to BuDa, you will pass by a community in the southern part of Davao known for its vegetation, gardens selling flowers and plants, livestock farms, cacao farms, fruit stands, and fishponds. And the good part is, they are way cheaper than the ones in the city. It is definitely worth it if you make a quick stop here.

Once you start seeing two giant sculptural pieces of the Davao Eagle, known as the “King of Philippine Skies,” along BuDa Highway in Barangay Baganihan in Marilog District, then that signals you are already in BuDa.

Things to do in BuDa

Once you’ve arrived in BuDa, the first thing you should do is eat. One of the must-tries here is Seagull Steak House and Coffee House, a quaint resto-café that serves everything from sandwiches to pancit to steak and sisig, paired with your choice of coffee: cappuccino, brewed, latte — they have everything.

But perhaps one that you shouldn’t miss is their best-seller: their suman-sikwate duo (suman paired with Davao’s native cocoa drink). Priced at just P65, this delicacy is one of the best I’ve tried. It has the right layers of flavors, texture, and pleasing plate presentation. I can’t wait to try this again!

Once you are refueled, I suggest you head straight to your next destination. Around 30 minutes away from Seagull is The Reel Place, a resort that is known as “The Little Baguio.” True to its moniker, The Reel Place is a great representation of Baguio. I’ve been to Baguio City in the Northern Philippines numerous times, so I know what it looks like. The landscape, the feel, and the vibes are so Baguio-like. The only difference is the crowd. I hope it stays that way.

The entrance fee here is only P25 per head, and with that, you can try everything from taking a dip in their swimming pool to crossing their hanging bridge and visiting their playground. You can also try their zip-line and experience their monkey bridge — you just have to pay separate fees.

Another place I highly recommend is the Benwa Farm, a unique place that offers a wholesome agricultural farming experience to its visitors. You have everything available here at very reasonable prices: from fresh produce like strawberries to rows of sunflowers, potted herbs, and other organic products. As we are definitely a family of strawberry lovers, we decided to bring home bags of it with us, with my mom making sure we had enough of them as pasalubong.

Inside the farm, you can also find their in-house canteen which serves their special lugaw and goto, as well as vegetable salad prepared using their own products. I must say, for not-your-usual lugaw, Benwa Farm’s tasted fantastic! Not to mention, healthier and better.

Also, something unique that Benwa Farm has to offer — that I thought was only available in Baguio — is their famed strawberry taho (strawberry flavored soybean curd). Be reminded though that it is only available during weekends.

As someone who’s trying to be healthy and is an organic-eater, this, for me, was one of the highlights of my BuDa trip. It was such an enjoyable and at the same time educational experience to see how they grow these homegrown products. I will definitely go back.

Also a must-visit in BuDa is Epol Falls. It’s a 20-feet high majestic falls, which according to locals there stands for “Everlasting Power of Love.” To get here you need to have stamina, and lots of it, as you will be trekking for many kilometers. It was worth the long walks though, I guarantee you, as you will be passing by one of the hidden gems of Mindanao.

Just a tip: Make sure to have a jacket or sweater with you as the water gushing from the falls can be a bit icy cold. Also, note that a right of way of P7 per head is being collected at the entrance and another in a small house near the falls so it’s better to prepare coins beforehand.

Lastly, you can never leave BuDa without visiting Hills View Mountain Villa. This is actually one of the best places I’ve been to so far. Everything about it is perfect. From its unique setting — perched on a hill overlooking the beautiful and picturesque scenery of nature and the sea of clouds — to the cold breeze of the wind, the Hills View Mountain Villa is just perfect for a family reunion or get-together. I happened to be with my parents and siblings so it was really one for the books.

Other places to visit are Highway 81, Alice Log House, and Buda Vista Vacation House. I look forward to covering them here on Car Rental Davao in the near future.

Our lives are often full of pressure and distraction. Most of the time, we rush through things so much that we forget to pause and live for a moment. Once in a while, we have to breathe and see the beauty of the world we live in. We have to have a deeper connection with nature and the people around us. BuDa gave me that—the feeling of being connected with the people I love and just being alive.

I hope to be able to go back once this pandemic is over. Who knows, maybe I will be able to bump into you and we can have a real human connection.

Things to Do in Marilog/ Buda, Davao: Eat and Visit The Mojicans

Just an hour drive from downtown Davao, you will reach a cold, foggy highland boundary of Davao and Bukidnon in Marilog District known to many as Buda.

buda bukidnon tourist spots

While we can’t go so many places during the pandemic, Buda has become a respite to many who feels suffocated by the congested city air. With this, many restaurants and coffee shops have opened to local tourists and to many who simply wanted to dine on a refreshing sight of nature. If you have visited here a couple of times, The Mojicans should be a familiar sight with their location just at the side of the road.

How to reach The Mojicans

Since Buda is a long road and the only means to navigate would be through landmarks. Coming from Davao City, it should be on the right side of the road, which is about a kilometer away from Epol. If you reach the Eagle Monument landmark, you have driven about a kilometer past The Mojicans already.

The helpful Google Maps should be able to guide you well.

The Food and Venue

Let’s get this straight. The Mojicans isn’t my favorite resto in the Buda area mainly because I am a huge fan of authentic taste. The dishes here are somewhat fusion and are adapted to suit Filipino taste (which I don’t think is bad, it’s only a matter of preference). Food is okay but I would want to try other dishes and visit again. My friends’ dishes were also so-so according to them.

The variety of food is also very good but oftentimes, they would run out of ingredients. There is a lot to choose from as alternatives.

The place is also homey and of course, buda-feels with its cold and refreshing nature. They have a very clean comfort room, a good number of parking spaces, and a wonderful garden where you can take some photos with your friends.

When to visit The Mojican and Buda area?

The best time to visit would be on weekdays where not too many people visit. You should not miss buying fresh vegetables at the Marilog community market on your way home. The veggies are certified fresh and very cheap too!

Please note that from time to time, Task Force checkpoint may sometimes have long queues so be early and come back home early too. Whilst traveling restrictions have been eased out, please volunteer ourselves to protect us, our families and others from the virus. Stay safe while staying sane!

Bukidnon Travel Guide (DIY): Things To Do + Itinerary & Budget

Updated: October 20, 2021

buda bukidnon tourist spots

This Bukidnon travel guide is meant for those who are planning for a weekend getaway in the province. So, I included a 2-day itinerary.

Bukidnon has been dubbed as “The Land Of Rolling Hills” and “The Marlboro Country Of The South” by locals and tourists alike. Having visited the province for the first time, I can attest that these descriptions are so true. But I would like to add more. I’d say, it is also “The Cradle Of Exhilarating Highways and Valleys” and “The Haven Of Perfect Panorama”. Jeez! It was in Bukidnon did I experience one of the most heart-pumping bus rides, with all the twists and turns on winding highways, skirting mountains and deep valleys. It was in this province did I experience some of the best nature scenery as well. A couple of quick stops by the highway gave me chances to see heavenly vistas, delightful panoramas of the province.

BUKIDNON IN A NUTSHELL

Bukidnon is a landlocked province located in Northern Mindanao. It is bordered by Misamis Oriental to the north, the Lanao Province to the west, Davao City to the South, and Agusan del Sur to its east. In terms of land area, it is the 3rd largest province in the Philippines, surpassed only by Palawan and Isabela. With the vastness of its geography, it comes as no surprise that this province cradles lots of tourist attractions that anyone can enjoy; attractions that are worthy of your visit.

THINGS TO DO IN BUKIDNON

Have a quick stopover at the overview.

The Overview - Quezon, Bukidnon

If you are coming to Bukidnon via Davao City, this can be the first item in your itinerary (but you can choose it as your last). The place, which is just along the highway, is one of the best spots to see the expanse of the province. A perfect place to capture its panorama.

The place also hosts quite a number of stores where you can buy souvenir items and food houses for a quick meal.

Entrance Fee: Free Location: Quezon

Take a plunge inside the refreshing Blue Water Cave

Blue Water Cave - Quezon, Bukidnon

Just a 15-minute trek from the highway, there lies this another attraction in Quezon that is worthy of your time. The Blue Water Cave has unique features that draw people into it. Aside from awesome limestone formations and complex passages, the cave harbors a pool of fresh water inside, which appears blue despite lack of sunlight.

Check out my Blue Water Cave Travel Guide for more about this attraction.

Entrance Fee: Free Location: Quezon (landmark is Pulangi Bridge) Registration: You need to register at Kiokong Eco-Tourism Center (just beside the Pulangi Bridge)

Experience serenity at Lake Apo

Lake Apo - Valencia City, Bukidnon

Perhaps this is one of the most relaxing spots you can ever experience when in Bukidnon. By just taking a ride on a floating bamboo raft, you get to appreciate the beauty of the lake in all its calmness and serenity. Aside from the lake itself, you can enjoy a nice sunset reflecting its golden glow on the water and the surrounding rolling hills. Truly, Lake Apo offers a great scenery you will cherish and remember in time.

Check out my Lake Apo Travel Guide for more details about this attraction.

Entrance Fee: PHP 25 Location: Valencia City

Scale the summit of Mt. Capistrano

Mt. Capistrano - Malaybalay, Bukidnon

At about 600 meters above sea – level, Mt. Capistrano might not be that high. But the terrain going to its peak is challenging enough to attract even seasoned mountaineers. It is an ideal hiking destination particularly for beginners. While you might find its trail that is as steep as 80° (well, some part of it) challenging, you will sure get awed by the breathtaking vistas above.

Check out my Mt. Capistrano Travel Guide for more on this hiking spot.

Registration Fee: PHP 50 Obligatory Tour Guide Fee: PHP 300 (good for 10 pax) Location: Malaybalay City

Rejuvenate  your aching body at Nasuli Cold Spring Resort

Nasuli Cold Spring Resort

After the adrenaline rush brought about by your Mt. Capistrano trek, it would be nice if you make a side-trip to Nasuli Cold Spring Resort. It will surely ease your aching body from the climb. Visiting this resort is a nice way to conclude your Bukidnon weekend getaway. You will go home refreshed and renewed from all of the tiring activities in your itinerary.

Check out my Nasuli Trave Guide to know more about this cold spring resort.

Entrance Fee: PHP 40 Location: Brgy. Bangcud, Malaybalay City

HOW TO GET THERE

If you are coming from outside Mindanao (e.g. Manila, Cebu, Clark), the best route to take is either via Cagayan de Oro or Davao City.

(via Davao City)

  • Fly to Davao City (Leading airlines have daily flights to Davao City from major airports in the Philippines.)
  • From Davao International Airport, take a ride going to Davao Overland Transport Terminal (Ecoland)
  • Take a bus ride bound for Cagayan de Oro (Rural Transit)
  • Alight at The Overview for your first stop

(via Cagayan de Oro)

Please note that, when going to Bukidnon via CDO, you may decide to change which place to visit first and which one is last to be efficient with time. In other words, consider following the Davao itinerary in reverse order.

  • Fly to Cagayan de Oro  via Laguindingan Internation Airport in Misamis Oriental (Leading airlines have daily flights to this airport from any other major airport in the Philippines.)
  • From the airport, take a shuttle ride going to Agora Bus Terminal (Lapasan)
  • Take a Rural Transit bus ride from Agora Bus Terminal bound for Malaybalay
  • Alight at Brgy. Bangcud for your first stop, which is Mt. Capistrano (landmark: Bangcud Fundamental Baptist Church)

Check current rates .

If GV isn’t the type of accommodation you like, no worries as there are plenty of options in Valencia City and Malaybalay
