Do you need an NYC map ? Whenever I visit a new city, I like to have a tourist map on hand to find everything I’m going to see and not forget anything. I live only an hour and a half from New York City, so I visit it every time I have the chance. I’ve compiled a lot of New York tourist maps that I think will be very useful to you as you’re planning your trip to the “City that Never Sleeps.”

Below is a list of the 12 maps of New York you’ll find in this article. You can print them out or save them on your smartphone so you can check them at any time.

I‘ve created the following interactive map of New York so you can find all the essential places to visit in NYC . You can find museums, the most emblematic skyscrapers in the city, parks – everything!

But if you think I’ve forgotten an interesting tourist spot, leave me a comment and I’ll add it.

At the end of this article, I explain how you can check this map when you’re offline, so you can always take it with you and use it during your trip .

Manhattan is the most popular area of New York among tourists, so it’s essential to have a map to locate the main attractions of New York. The following Manhattan map is also very useful because you can locate the different neighborhoods within the island of Manhattan.

Here is a map of the main attractions in New York . This map is very useful for finding the NY essentials and ideal if you’re going to visit the city for a short time.

The next one is the Central Park map , one of my favorite places in New York and a place I really recommend you visit, since it’s the green heart of the city. Of course, you’ll need to spend a few hours in it, since it’s not just the largest urban park in New York – it’s also one of the largest in the world. Here you can check all the things to do in Central Park.

Here is a New York street map so you don’t get lost and can locate yourself quickly. As soon as you understand the numbering system of streets and avenues in New York, there is no way you’ll get lost.

NYC neighborhood map

Some neighborhoods in the city are very well known and probably sound familiar to you. In any case, the following New York neighborhood map will help you to find them quickly.

Here is a New York subway map , one of the maps I consider essential for moving around a big city like this one. Taking the subway in New York can be a bit difficult in the beginning, but one day in the city is enough to figure out how it works. Besides, here is a guide on the other ways to get around NYC .

Below is a New York road map. You may not need it since most tourists come to New York City by plane, and if they take an excursion, such as to Philadelphia or Niagara Falls , they book a tour.

In my case, I always go to New York from Philadelphia by car, so this road map of NYC is very useful to me. You can also use it if you decide to rent a car and visit New York State.

If you’re still afraid of getting lost, here is a high-resolution map of NYC so you can zoom in and find any point. In addition, it’s also a great way to make sure you don’t miss a single detail of this great city.

Finally, here is a map of NYC for downloading . You can check this map even when you’re offline if you follow the subsequent steps. First, install the Maps.me and Dropbox applications on your smartphone. Both are available for all operating systems and are completely free.

You will have to search “New York” in Maps.me, download the KML file, and save it to Dropbox. Then, open the KML file from your phone using Maps.me so that all the tourist attraction spots are saved. By doing this, you’ll have the interactive map of NYC available on your smartphone.

New York City is the most visited city in United States with 11.5 million tourists per year. Thanks to its numerous monuments, museums, sightseeings, landmarks and attractions, New York City was declared World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

New York's five boroughs each have their own particularities and charm. The main tourist sites are located in the borough of Manhattan. The city is divided into 5 famous neighborhoods: Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx and Staten Island. Each area of New York City offers must-see sights and secret corners.

• Manhattan concentrates the main tourist curiosities: Uper East Side, Wall Street, Chinatown, Central Park, Soho as many emblematic districts which make Manhattan an exciting district which attracts millions of tourists.
• The Bronx is separated from Manhattan by the Harlem River. This borough, now more secure, attracts more and more people. You will discover the South Bronx (the real Little Italy) and the Yankee Stadium.
• Brooklyn is the most populated district and qualified as an artists' district. Multi-cultural, Brooklyn offers a contemporary and trendy atmosphere. 
• Queens attracts the trendy young generation. Queens is rich in atypical places, parks and architecture.
• Staten Island is the nature district, with multiple sports activities. It is the ideal district to recharge your batteries and take a break.

Nyc hop on hop off

The Big Bus of New York City is an original way of visiting NYC and discover its monuments, museums, attractions while getting on and off at your disposal. This concept of hop on hop off bus or open-top double-decker buses offers a network of 2 tourist tours and routes and 30 stops with commentary in 10 languages.

The Big Bus tour takes you to the heart of Manhattan to discover all the points of interest and monuments of the borough: the Empire State Building,Times Square,Central Park and the Statue of Liberty. Big Bus New York is the only sightseeing bus offering live commentary in English (pre-recorded in 10 languages), Wi-Fi and access to over 25 bus stops throughout the city so you can get on and off whenever you want. The buses are double-decker and open-top. You can see the different routes and all the stops on the map.

Among all the stops, 10 are a must: Times Square, Chinatown, Wall Street, Empire State Building, Brooklyn Bridge, Central Park, Metropolitan Museum, Madison Square Garden, Little Italy and the Statue of Liberty.

Four different tours are offered: 

• Uptown Loop: the Upper East Side which is home to some of New York's most popular museums such as the Guggenheim and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The loop also takes you through Midtown, passing the Grand Central Terminal and the famous Chrysler Building.
• Downtown Loop: The lower part of Manhattan passes through the Flatiron District, Union Square, Greenwich Village and Times Square.

CitySightseeing NYC buses offer 4 routes:

• The Downtown tour (2h30): discover the must-see sights of Midtown and Lower Manhattan. The starting point of this tour is Times Square. You will pass by the Empire State Building and Battery Park and explore New York neighborhoods such as SoHo, Little Italy and Chinatown.
• Uptown Tour (2 hours): The Uptown Loop covers the northern part of Manhattan. This tour also starts at Times Square and goes around Central Park. During this tour, you will discover the American Museum of Natural History, The Apollo Theater in Harlem, the Guggenheim and the Central Park Zoo.

Nyc river cruises

The Circle Line Sightseeing of New York City is a regular river hop on hop off shuttle service transporting passengers on the Hudson River and East River to visit New York City.

With Circle Line cruises you will discover the sights of New York while enjoying a cruise. All Circle Line cruises depart from Pier 83, near the Intrepid Museum. Each cruise will allow you to enjoy views of Manhattan's skyline, the One World Observatory, the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island.

There are several Circle Line sightseeing cruises in NYC :

• The Circle Line Best of NYC Cruise is a 2.5 hour cruise during which you will discover all of Manhattan. This cruise goes around the island of Manhattan. You will see the skyline, Yankee Stadium, Queens, Brooklyn, The Bronx and other sites. You will pass under iconic bridges such as the Brooklyn Bridge and the Manhattan Bridge that connect Manhattan to other boroughs in New York.
• The Circle Line Landmarks Cruise allows you to see only the major sights of NYC. The cruise lasts 1h30: you will pass under the Brooklyn Bridge and you will see emblematic sites such as the Empire State Building and the Statue of Liberty. A map of New York City is a valuable tool to use as you plan your trip, but it's also helpful once you arrive. With one of these New York City maps, you'll be able to find your way around easier and plan your days in New York City more effectively.

Streetwise Manhattan Map

The Streetwise Manhattan map is my top choice for visitors to New York City. It has a sturdy laminated finish, making it easy to fold and resilient enough to survive repeat trips to New York City. We especially like the compact size of this map -- unfolded it is only the size of a piece of legal paper. The index covers neighborhoods, places of interest and museums. Subway lines are included, and there is also a map that covers Manhattan buses. Unless you want to explore Queens or Brooklyn, this map is a good choice.

New Yorker's Manhattan Map

Smaller when folded than most of the other maps, this laminated map is a bit softer than the other maps, making it easy to stick in your back pocket. In addition to the street map, there are separate subway and bus maps, which is helpful when you're trying to plan a route on public transportation. Additionally, the subway map covers the entire subway system (not just Manhattan). The comprehensive index covers 100+ attractions, as well as parks and Central Park landmarks. There is also a list of useful phone numbers for transport, emergencies, and airports on one panel of the map.

Official New York City Visitors Map

While not laminated, this map has one advantage over all the others -- it's available for free from the NYC & Company, New York City's official tourism marketing organization. If you chose to request the map in advance online, be sure to allow plenty of time for the map to arrive by mail before you depart. Alternatively, you can pick up a copy of the map at any of New York City's Official Visitor Information Centers .

1 Day in NYC: Must-do’s for First-timers + Interactive Map

Only have one day in New York ? Maximize your visit with my itinerary created especially for NYC first-time visitors . I have visited New York City several times. During my last two trips, I was accompanied by people visiting for the first time.

I recommend spending at least four days in NYC . However, even one day can give you a taste of this top travel destination.

Key Things to Know

• Don’t miss the Statue of Liberty, the 9/11 Memorial, or Central Park for a mix of history and iconic landmarks.
• Maximize your time by using the subway for faster (cheap) travel between Manhattan’s attractions. Or walk!
• This itinerary is completely customizable to your particular interests and the exact amount of time you have in New York City.

One day in New York itinerary 

9/11 memorial (and museum).

9/11 Memorial | Closest subway stops: WTC–Cortland St (1) and Cortland Street (R, W)  

Start your day by spending your morning in Lower Manhattan. 

In my opinion, your one-day NYC itinerary should absolutely include the 9/11 Memorial. It’s one of my favorite free things to do in New York City .   

The terrorist attack on Sept. 11, 2001, which destroyed the Twin Towers, forever changed the city and the United States. In fact, it’s one of the most moving and beautiful memorials that I have ever had the privilege of seeing. The 9/11 Memorial typically is open to the public all day every day. 

Optional: The 9/11 Memorial Museum is at the same location. Though I haven’t had the privilege of seeing it, I’ve heard great things. There is a charge for admission to the museum.

Statue of Liberty 

Ferry from Manhattan departs from Battery Park | Subway stops: South Ferry Station (1), Whitehall Street (R), Bowling Green (4, 5)  

In my opinion, your New York City itinerary must include the Statue of Liberty, my absolute favorite place in the city.

Buy your tickets ahead of time onlin e, especially if you want to climb up to the crown. When available, those tickets can sell out weeks or even months in advance.    

Even if you don’t want to go up onto the pedestal or the crown of the Statue of Liberty, you can purchase a general admission ticket to enjoy the cruise over to Liberty Island (with great views of both Lady Liberty and Lower Manhattan). You can visit the new museum and walk around the monument’s exterior.

 If you only have a day in New York I recommend skipping a visit to Ellis Island even though it’s included in your ticket. 

More things to do on a day trip to New York City

• Explore NYC with a sightseeing helicopter tour over Manhattan .
• Pay a visit to the top of One World Observatory with this skip-the-line ticket .
• If you’re staying the night in New York, consider this sunset cruise in New York Harbor.

Lunch options: where to eat 

By the time you finish your visit to the Statue of Liberty, you’ll likely be ready for a bite to eat. The Crown Café offers a wide variety of burgers, salads, and sandwiches. Their menu includes vegetarian options as well as several items that can be made gluten-free upon request. 

Battery Park (where you’ll disembark from your cruise to Liberty Island) is a great picnic spot. You can grab a cheap lunch from a food truck or assemble a picnic from a nearby market.

If a restaurant is more what you’re looking for, wander into the Financial District where you’ll find a variety of popular eateries for all budgets.

Empire State Building 

20 West 34 Street | Subway stop: 34 St–Herald Square (B, D, F, M, N, Q, R, W), 33 St (M)  

Many believe visiting the Empire State Building is a must on their trip to New York City.

I will admit right now that in all my NYC trips, I’ve only ever admired this iconic structure from the ground.  I do not like heights, nor do I generally pay money to stand atop them. But you who are not afraid of heights can go as high as the 102nd floor. The main observation deck is on the 86th floor.   

Time-saving tip: Upgrade your Empire State Building ticket to get skip-the-line access.

As an alternative, save the Empire State Building for after dinner, or even enjoy dinner at the State Grill and Bar.  

Times Square 

Subway stop: Times Square–42 Street (N, Q, R, S, W, 1, 2, 3, 7)   

You’ve seen it in movies and TV shows. Of all the places to visit in New York City, it’s hard to think of anything else that’s more New York than Times Square. Soak it in, take a few photos, and wander through so you can say you’ve been there (it’s great at night also). Maybe even buy a cheap souvenir T-shirt or stop in at M&M’s World.  

Times Square is just a 15-minute walk from the Empire State Building.  

Rockefeller Center 

Between 49th and 51st Streets between Fifth and Sixth Avenues | Subway stop: 47-50 Streets Rockefeller Center (B, D, F, M), 49 Street (N, R, W)  

A 10-minute walk from Times Square will take you to Rockefeller Center. It’s a New York City landmark that includes 30 Rockefeller Plaza (NBC Studios), Radio City Music Hall, and more.

In addition to some great shopping and dining, you can take a guided tour of Rockefeller Center, go to the Top of the Rock Observation Deck , skate at the Rink, and more.     

If you’re feeling snackish, I recommend stopping at Magnolia Bakery for something yummy.

Central Park 

From North 110th Street to Central Park South (59th Street), and from Central Park West (8th Avenue) to 5th Ave | Subway stops: There are several subway stops around the perimeter of the park including 5th Ave/59 Street (N, R, W), 59 Street/Columbus Circle (A, B, C, D, 1), Central Park North (2, 3), and 6 stops on the west side of the park.  

Central Park is so quintessentially New York that you absolutely need to make time in your itinerary to see it even if only spending one day in New York.

Now, keep in mind that this park is huge. I mean it. Central Park covers 1.3 square miles (840 acres) of Manhattan. You could easily spend an entire day just exploring this place.  

To start I’d suggest looking at a map of the park and choosing a few things you want to see. This might be the Central Park Zoo, the Alice in Wonderland Statue, Belvedere Castle, or the Conservatory Water (where you can rent a model boat to sail on the pond).   

The southeast corner of Central Park is just a 15-minute walk from Rockefeller Center. If you want to walk all the way to the Conservatory Water and the Alice in Wonderland Statue, expect a walk of closer to 30 minutes.

Time-saving Tip: Instead of walking to Central Park from Rockefeller Center, jump in a NYC cab.

Ways to modify this itinerary

With only one day in NYC, there are an incredible number of ways you could spend your time. Here are a few ways you could modify this one-day itinerary to fit your particular interests. It’s important that you get to see the things you want.

• Take the subway to Brooklyn then walk across the Brooklyn Bridge, enjoying your view of the Manhattan skyline.
• Enjoy a tour of either or both of two of the premier art museums in the world, The Metropolitan Museum of Art and/or the Museum of Modern Art.
• Explore Greenwich Village, Soho, and other iconic neighborhoods.
• End your day with a Broadway show.

Short half-day itinerary for NYC

Even if you don’t have a full day or 24 hours to spend in New York City, you can still see a few of the major highlights. Here are a few options:

• Focus on one area such as Lower Manhattan, grabbing a view of Brooklyn Bridge, followed by the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island, and the 9/11 Memorial & Museum.
• Explore the Empire State Building, Times Square, and Rockefeller Center, and then stroll up to Central Park if time allows.
• Get the best of New York’s top art museums at The Met, the Museum of Modern Art, and the Guggenheim.

If you’re thinking about spending more than a day in New York, you might be overwhelmed by the many hotel options.

Here are my recommendations for where to stay in New York City: 

• Hyatt Place Midtown South (52 West 36th Street): We loved staying at this hotel. It’s just two blocks from the Empire State Building and just around the corner from the 34th Street – Herald Square subway stop. Book Now  
• For a more boutique-style accommodation try Archer Hotel New York (45 West 38th Street). Book Now

How to get around

I say this so often, but I will continue to say it over and over: use your feet and the subway.

I’m serious about the subway. You’ll get where you want to go cheaper than Uber or taxis and of course much faster than walking especially when traveling from one area of Manhattan to another.  You can find subway maps on the MTA website .

Taxis are a fine option for getting around New York City especially if you are in a time crunch or are going someplace that just doesn’t have an easy subway route or a nearby stop.

The bottom line

There are so many amazing things you could fill your day with in NYC that you can’t possibly see as much as you would like, BUT you can see the best of the best. From historical monuments to stunning views from the best observatories in the world, you almost can’t go wrong with how you spend your day here.

Subways are indeed the best way to get around the whole city. However, if the time permits, why not go sailing as well? After seeing the city on foot all day, one can relax on a sailboat and enjoy the skyline. Several companies offer rental for 2-3 hours including sunset cruises overlooking Manhattan. Book beforehand to get the best deals.

Visiting New York is worthwhile at any time of year, but I personally like the warm months best. Summer in New York can be very hot and humid. So, for many, the best times to visit New York is April and June, and September and October.

Spending Christmas in New York or enjoying the pre-Christmas season in New York City is also a wonderful experience.  The ice rinks are open, the city is beautifully decorated, and, if it snows, the dream vacation at wintertime is perfect!

Paying in New York

Best Way to Travel in New York

Finding your way around New York is quite easy, even if it doesn’t look like it at first. The streets’ checkerboard pattern makes finding your way around easy. These are the best ways to get around New York:

Metro / Subway: If you have longer distances ahead of you, then the Subway is your friend, because here you can travel really cheap. It’s easy to use! The MetroCard is available at every Subway station. You can buy single rides or the popular MetroCard for 7 days; that way you can travel for a week in New York at a fixed price. Taxi:  In New York, you can choose between the Yellow Cab and Uber. You can check out our tips and all the information you need to know in our following blog:  Taxi in New York City .

By bike: With many of the New York sightseeing passes (you can find out more about this budget tip in my New York Pass comparison ), the bike rental is included. We ourselves really love using New York’s Citi Bikes. This city bike program has over 1,000 stations throughout New York City, and it’s super-cheap. We’ll show you how it works in the Citi Bike New York article.

On Foot: You’ll be surprised how much walking you’ll do in New York. After all, there’s something to see on every corner. So be sure to bring comfortable shoes!

Where to Stay in New York?

Which neighborhood is best for you depends on several things: your interests, how close you want to be to the attractions and what your travel budget is. In the image below, I’ve drawn you my favorite neighborhoods of New York including the main attractions nearby.

And, on the subject of safety: In all of Manhattan, the Bronx , Brooklyn, and large parts of Queens, you don’t have to worry about being out and about in the evening. New York City is one of the safest cities in the world!

Where Should you Stay in New York?

Manhattan – it doesn’t get more central than this: Manhattan is the most famous borough of them all. Plus, it contains 95% of all the attractions New York is known for. Everything is within easy reach, and you are right in the middle of it all. On the other hand, the hotels are a bit more expensive than in Brooklyn or Queens .

Brooklyn – urban and relaxed: For a long time, Brooklyn was the insider’s tip: now it’s “completely” normal neighborhoods. However, you’ll quickly notice one thing: life is much more normal, because it’s more of a residential area. It’s super relaxed, pleasant, and just as diverse as Manhattan. Above all, you can enjoy the Manhattan skyline from here!

Queens – the new trendy neighborhood: Queens is a bit more “normal” than Brooklyn is, but, lately, we’ve noticed that it is getting more and more gentrified. The hotels in Long Island City (not to be confused with Long Island!) are especially popular because they are cheaper compared to Manhattan—and they have a perfect connection to the Subway, which makes Queens a great alternative to Manhattan and Brooklyn.

What to See in New York?

One thing to know in advance: just because there is so much to see in New York, a little planning makes absolute sense. For highlights like the Empire State Building ( here ), the Edge Hudson Yards observation deck ( here ) or the One World Observatory ( here ), I recommend buying the tickets online in advance. This will not only save you waiting time on site, but you can also be sure that you will actually be able to visit your desired sights.

These are my tips after more than 20 visits to New York:

• Observation decks:  New York City has no less than five (!) major observation decks to offer, and each one is a dream in itself. My two favorites are The Edge Hudson Yards and the One World Observatory , because from here you have a sensational view of New York from above and you can see the Empire State Building . From the end of 2021, another cool option will be added with the glass One Vanderbilt . One more thing about the Empire State Building: It’s the most visited observation deck in New York, so it’s always busy. Avoid the crowds in the morning – and if you really want to go to the Empire State Building in the evening, choose Thursday, Friday or Saturday. During those times, a saxophonist plays on the observation deck. Important: book the Skip-the-Line-Tickets (you can do that here). Then, you can easily save 1-2 hours of waiting time!
• Visit the Statue of Liberty : The trip from Battery Park to the Statue of Liberty is super-popular. To save yourself long waiting times, make sure you take the first ferry of the day. Here, you can find the best Statue of Liberty Cruises right now.
• Definitely take a boat tour , because seeing New York from the water is like being on vacation. Choices range from the free Staten Island Ferry or the NYC Ferry ($2.90 each way) to sailing tours (gorgeous) and the classic sightseeing tours that are included with all major New York passes.
• Walk along the High Line from the Meatpacking District to Hudson Yards .
• Visit Times Square in the evening – that’s when it’s at its most impressive.
• Relax in Central Park or Bryant Park .
• Plan a maximum of three attractions per day . After all, you don’t want any sightseeing stress.

New York is also really good for shopping. There are many small shopping spots and addresses, but also the big brands can often be found with flagship stores. If that’s not enough, you can go shopping in one of the outlets and flea markets of New York.

The best shopping areas in New York are Broadway, SoHo , Chelsea, the Meatpacking District, and Williamsburg in Brooklyn. And, of course, 5th Avenue!

Avoid Times Square for shopping!

A real tourist trap are the stores around Times Square – they are not only overpriced, but also the quality is not right in most cases!

I love the rooftop bars of New York . You can sit and relax, enjoy a sensational view of the city and listen to relaxing music. All this mixes with the so-typical sounds of the city in the background, and if you have something delicious to drink or eat on top of that, it can’t get any better! Visit a Broadway Show

New York is known for its many musicals and Broadway shows – most of which are performed in the Theatre District around Times Square. Here are our tips on the  best Broadway Shows in New York . If you already know which Broadway show you want to see, I recommend ordering the tickets in advance ( here ). If you’re still flexible, you can buy leftover tickets at TKTS in Times Square, for example.

The Statue of Liberty has become an American symbol of freedom and welcome to the immigrants who come to the USA looking for a better life. It's the popular tourist attractions in New York. The crown of Lady Liberty, as the statue is often affectionately called, has seven spikes, symbolizing the Seven Seas across which liberty should be spread. In her left hand she holds a tablet with the Declaration of Independence and in her right hand a torch, symbolizing Enlightenment.

Empire State Building

The Empire State Building has captured the attention of young and old alike: every year, millions of tourists flock to the Empire State Building. You can visit the Empire State Building's observatory on the 86th floor from where you have a magnificent view over the city of New York. The Empire State Building is situated south of Midtown, away from the skyscraper clusters in midtown and in the financial district downtown, so this is one of the few places in Manhattan where you have an open 360 degrees view.

Brooklyn Bridge

The Brooklyn Bridge, built between 1869 and 1883, connects Manhattan with New York. The bridge is one of the most magnificent tourist attractions in New York. The impressive bridge spans the East river between Brooklyn and Manhattan and stretches for a length of 5989 ft, about 1.8 km. The length between the large towers is 1595.5 ft (486 meter). This made the Brooklyn bridge the world's largest suspension bridge.

One of the greatest cities in the world , New York is always a whirlwind of activity, with famous sights at every turn and never enough time to see them all.

This tour allows reserved access to board the ferry and includes access to the Museum at Ellis Island.

Author's Tip: Buying tickets near the ferry can be tricky, with hawkers swarming you as you exit the subway claiming to be "official representatives" and trying to sell you more expensive tickets before you can find the ticket booth. Every New York block presents a totally different scene to visitors than the last. Many people associate New York with the island of Manhattan, and you will probably spend most of your time touring this area. However, there are four other boroughs – Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx and Staten Island – that are worth a visit as well, if you have time. If you only have a day to tour Manhattan, consider one of the city's best bus tours .

Constantly buzzing with a bright vibrancy, there is never a shortage of things to do in Manhattan. The center of fashion and trendsetting, this borough is made up of three main districts – Uptown, Midtown and Downtown – that each have their own smaller neighborhood pockets. Avenues generally run north to south and increase in number as you go west. Streets run the opposite direction, and numbers increase as you go north.

This easy layout is a completely different story south of Houston Street (pronounced HOW-stin) in lower Manhattan. Streets are no longer on a grid and the names have no helpful logic. The Upper East Side and the Upper West Side in northern Manhattan are divided by scenic Central Park . Meanwhile, 59th Street separates Uptown from Midtown.

Upper East Side

Accessible via the 4, 5 and 6 subway lines.

The homes and stores that line the streets of the Upper East Side can only be described as posh. Museums like the Guggenheim , located near the 86th St. stop of the 4, 5 and 6 subway lines, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art (known simply as "the Met"), just four blocks south, are also situated here. North of 96th Street is Spanish Harlem, whose history as the stomping grounds of Langston Hughes and Duke Ellington make the area worth visiting. Recently, the area has started to clean up its image (and is now home to a decent range of restaurants and shops), but you should use caution if you decide to visit, especially after dark.

Upper West Side

Accessible via the 1, 2, 3, A, B, C and D subway lines.

Much of the Upper West Side is characterized by elegant residences and architecture. It's also home to the Lincoln Center, the concert hall of the well-regarded New York Philharmonic Orchestra and New York City Ballet. You'll find this venue off the 66th St.-Lincoln Center stop on the 1 and 2 lines or the 59th St. stop of the A, B, C and D subway lines. Columbia University is located in the northwest corner of the Upper West Side, in an area known as Morningside Heights.

Central Park

Accessible via the A, B, C, D, Q, 2 and 3 subway lines.

Central Park hosts many of the city's concerts and other outdoor activities, plus it serves as an escape from the commotion of the surrounding city. One of the park's most popular spots is the Bethesda Terrace, which overlooks the Central Park Lake. The Obelisk, which has a duplicate in London, is another point of interest.

Most easily accessible via the A, C, E, 4, 5 and 6 subway lines.

Midtown's glitz and glamour draws many of the city's camera-toting tourists – and for good reason. It's the home to classic landmarks like Rockefeller Center (off the Rockefeller Center stop on the B, D, F or M subway line), the Empire State Building , the Chrysler Building , Bryant Park , Grand Central Station and Times Square . Part of Times Square – from 42nd to 47th street – is closed off from cars to relieve congestion. The Square is accessible off the 42nd Street Times Square stop off the 1, 2, 3 and 7 subway lines. Midtown also shelters the Theater District, high-end shopping along Fifth Avenue , Carnegie Hall and the Museum of Modern Art (nicknamed the MoMA).

If Uptown is home to ritzy residences and Midtown has the lights and postcard sights, then cutting-edge Downtown keeps Manhattan cool. It's helpful to learn this area's abbreviations, since the streets here aren't as navigable or logical as the ones in the rest of the island.

SoHo and NoHo

Accessible via the 6, N, Q, R, W, A, C and E subway lines.

For shopping and good restaurants, head to SOuth of HOuston Street to the SoHo neighborhood, accessible by the Prince St. stop off the R and N lines, among others. NoHo, is similar to its southern counterpart with trendy eateries and bars.

Greenwich Village and Chelsea

Accessible via the B, D, F, V, L, N Q, R, W, A, C, E, 1, 2, 3 and 6 subway lines.

Greenwich Village, located north of SoHo, still maintains the laid-back bohemian feel that it became known for. Further north is Chelsea, which is the place to see contemporary art galleries. It's also the center of the city's gay community.

Accessible via the A, C, E, 1, N, Q, R and W subway lines.

The TRIangle BElow CAnal Street, known as Tribeca, is probably most known for actor Robert De Niro's annual Tribeca Film Festival. Tribeca also consists of art galleries and old converted warehouse buildings.

Chinatown and Little Italy

Accessible via the J, M, Z, N, Q, R, and W subway lines.

Sitting in the middle of downtown is a shrinking Little Italy. Trendier dining establishments have started to push out the more traditional Old World feeling the area used to have, but Mulberry Street still embraces traditional cuisine. To the east, Chinatown has one of the biggest immigrant communities outside of China and is filled with authentic restaurants, like Joe's Shanghai, which comes recommended by visitors.

East Village and Lower East Side

Accessible via the F, V, L, N, Q, R, W, 4, 5 and 6 subway lines.

The East Village leans a bit bohemian compared with the neighboring upscale bars and restaurants of the Lower East Side.

Financial District

Accessible via the 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, A, C, E, J, N and R subway lines.

The southern end of Manhattan is where you'll find the World Trade Center site, as well as the New York Stock Exchange. You can reach the Financial District by jumping on the J line to the Broad St. stop or the 2, 3, 4 or 5 line to the Wall St. stop, among others. Bustling and busy during the day, the area empties after work hours, but we recommend a visit here for its excellent views of the Statue of Liberty .

Accessible via the A, C, N, Q, B, D, F, J, M, Z, 2 and 3 subway lines.

Out of all five New York boroughs, Brooklyn is the most populated, and is steadily growing. Down-to-earth and artsy, this area gives New York an unpretentious quality. Music venues, museums and eclectic shops are spread throughout. Some of the most popular areas include Williamsburg, with its newly booming restaurant scene, or the pricey-but-quaint Brooklyn Heights, with its fantastic views of Manhattan. Coney Island is located in Brooklyn and sits off the Coney Island Stillwell Ave. stop on the D, F, N and Q subway lines.

Connecting Brooklyn to Manhattan is the 5,989-foot Brooklyn Bridge , which spans the East River. The suspension bridge provides nice views of Manhattan from a wide pedestrian walkway that is elevated above traffic. If you have time, take a train to High Street in Brooklyn to walk the bridge back to Manhattan. 

Accessible via the 7, G, R, V, F, L, E, J and Z subway lines.

A trip on subway lines 7 and G will take you east of Manhattan to the eclectic borough of Queens. Astoria, located closest to Manhattan off the N and Q lines, is the city's Greektown; numerous Greek cafes, restaurants and Greek Orthodox churches line the streets here, while nearby Flushing is home to the second largest Chinatown in New York City. The New York Mets play at Citi Field. East of Astoria, Jackson Heights has a large Indian community, and Elmhurst, farther southeast along the 7 line, has a vibrant Latino population. Each of these areas' differing cultural personalities and ethnic eats make Queens a borough of wonderfully diverse character. It's also home to top-notch museums like the PS1 Contemporary Art Center.

While it's relatively easy to get to Queens from Manhattan, most visitors lament the difficulties of traveling within the borough. Queens isn't as pedestrian-friendly as other boroughs like Manhattan and the subway isn't as extensive.

Accessible via the 2, 5 and 6 subway lines.

The Bronx is probably best known for the rough exterior presented in the media, but it's an unfair assessment of the area's unique charms. The borough is home to country's largest metropolitan zoo, the Bronx Zoo off the 2 and 5 lines to Bronx Park East or accessible via the BxM11 Express bus from Manhattan, as well as the Yankee Stadium. It's easy to get to the Bronx from Manhattan, but harder to travel within: Subway lines only run north to south, and buses can be slow. You'll likely want to steer clear of South Bronx, as it's typically the most dangerous part of the area.

Staten Island

Accessible via ferry from the Financial District.

An island south of Manhattan, Staten Island was once dubbed as "the Alaska of New York City," according to the New York Times, as it's "somehow urban, rural and suburban at once." You can hop one of the free ferries from Manhattan to Staten Island and enjoy the beautiful city views as you ride. You can also drive to the island from New Jersey and Brooklyn, though there are steep road tolls.

On the island are several notable museums, which include the Jacques Marchais Museum of Tibetan Art and the interactive Staten Island Children's Museum, as well as a historic replica of a New York village from the old days at Historic Richmond Town.

In the past, New York City has owned a reputation for being a rough and dangerous city, but now it's one of the safest large cities in the country. As a tourist, you're not likely to encounter any serious crimes, but you should still use common sense when exploring the city. In the evenings, stick to well-lit areas with other people and keep a close eye on valuables. To discourage pickpockets, keep your wallet in your front pocket and your purses zipped closed.

Like other large cities, New York City is filled with its own group of eclectic personalities. Should someone out of the ordinary approach you, follow many New Yorkers' leads and simply walk away. Be particularly wary in places like Manhattan's Lower East Side and parts of boroughs Queens, Brooklyn and especially the Bronx. Central Park can also get seedy at night.

Despite what people may think, the subway in New York City is safer now than it has ever been. That said, you should be particularly watchful of your belongings while riding, especially when the trains are packed and crowded. Stay near the ticket booths and get into cars with more people or with the conductor, who will normally stick his head out when the train stops. Consider taking a cab at night if you are alone.

Pokémon GO Fest is accessible by public transportation, pedestrian bridges, and third-party operated dedicated ferries. There is neither parking for personal vehicles nor designated rideshare drop-off or pick-up locations on Randall’s Island.

New York Ferry

Take the ferry to Randall’s Island! Ferries will depart from and return to the East 35th Street Ferry Landing located at the intersection of East 35th Street and FDR Drive. They will travel to and from Randall’s Island all weekend long, running from 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. daily. Tickets are first-come, first-served, and must be purchased prior to boarding.

X80 Express Bus The X80 bus route only operates during special events on Randall’s Island. It stops at 125th Street and Lexington Avenue (immediately outside the 125th Street and Lexington Avenue subway station for the 4/5/6 trains). The route runs approximately every 10 minutes during event hours, with service beginning at 8:00 a.m. and concluding at 8:00 p.m. It costs $7 to take to the island but is FREE leaving the island. There are two stops on Randall’s Island: Randall’s Island North on Bronx Shore Drive near the North Festival Entrance and Randall’s Island South at Icahn Stadium near the soccer field. The north bus stop is new for 2024. The north stop is recommended for anyone who is ready to leave Randall’s Island.

Step One: Take the 4, 5, or 6 subway train to the 125th Street/Lexington Avenue station; $5.80 roundtrip ($1.00 new-card fee not included).

Step Two: Take the X80 Express Bus from the 125th Street/Lexington Avenue station to Randall’s Island Park; $7.00 roundtrip ($4.10 if coming from subway using MetroCard or OMNY Contactless option).

M35 Local Bus The M35 route buses are a standard MTA service that takes passengers from Harlem E 125th St. / Lexington Ave with a stop at Icahn Stadium near the soccer field. Unlike the X80, this bus route isn’t an express service and will make several stops.

From the Bronx East 132nd St. & Willow Ave (approximately 15 minutes) The Randall’s Island Connector provides at-grade access to pedestrians and cyclists. It runs under the arches of the Hell Gate Bridge railroad trestle between 132nd Street at Willow/Walnut Avenues in the Bronx onto the northern shore of Randall’s Island Park.

As Pride Month draws to a close, cities across the U.S. are preparing for the final blowout celebrations that punctuate the annual month of LGBTQIA+ celebration. This weekend, June will go out with a bang with multiple highly anticipated parades that draw marchers and spectators to communities big and small.

Pride Month commemorates the 1969 Stonewall Uprising in New York City, where subsequent protests are credited with a shift in LGBTQ+ activism in the U.S. Being the birthplace of Pride as we know it, NYC has one of the biggest and most iconic celebrations and marches each year.

This year's theme is “Reflect. Empower. Unite," according to organizers. "The theme was selected to highlight the importance of the NYC Pride March as the intersection for Queer liberation and joy," said Heritage of Pride.

"Drawing upon the activist history that ignited the movement for LGBTQIA+ rights, the theme encouragesindividuals, advocates, community leaders and allies to reflect on the challenges they have overcome together..."

When is the NYC Pride parade?

The NYC Pride March is scheduled for Sunday, June 30 starting at noon ET.

What is the NYC Pride parade route?

According to the MTA , the march will begin at 25th Street and 5th Avenue. Marchers will proceed south on 5th Avenue and walk west on 8th Street.

After crossing over 6th Avenue, the March will continue on Christopher Street, passing the Stonewall National Monument.

It will then turn north on 7th Avenue, passing the New York City AIDS Memorial, before dispersing in Chelsea at 16th Street and 7th Avenue.

How to watch the NYC Pride parade

In-person, viewing of the 2024 March will be available along the route streets listed above. Experienced Pride-goers suggest nabbing a spot along the main stretches early, as crowds can get thick by noon.

NEW YORK --  President Joe Biden, first lady Jill Biden and legendary singer-songwriter Elton John were in New York City on Friday to attend the opening of the Stonewall National Monument Visitor Center , which memorializes the site of riots that sparked the gay rights movement in 1969. 

"It set an example, I'm not exaggerating, for the entire world. That's what this center, this monument, this month is all about," Pres. Biden said. 

"It reminds us that our differences are precious and our similarities infinite," the first lady said.

The Stonewall National Monument Visitor Center  on Christopher Street in Greenwich Village officially opened to the public Friday, and it's free to visit. 

Officials say it honors the legacy of the rebellion and is a hub for learning about the history and continued struggles of the LGBTQ+ rights movement. 

"For generations, LGBTQI+ Americans have summoned the courage to live proudly, even when it meant putting their lives at risk. 55 years ago at the Stonewall Inn in New York, brave LGBTQI+ individuals did just that and formed a movement that would transform our nation," Pres. Biden wrote on X before speaking at the opening. 

Organizers hope the center will teach visitors about LGBTQ+ history and ongoing struggles for liberation.

"I think it's very important for people of this generation to understand the struggles of the past. We tend to forget that rights that are won can just as easily be lost," visitor Rohin Naio said.

"It's here to honor all of the elders that fought for our rights. It's to give hope to all the youth that are still suffering or are feeling oppression," said Steve Love Menendez. 

Menendez told CBS New York he visits Stonewall every day to check on the rainbow flags on display . 

"I'm the creator of the rainbow flag display here at the park," he said. "So I come every morning to restore any missing flags and make sure everything looks beautiful for everyone to enjoy."

The Stonewall Inn became a national monument in 2016. This is the first LGBTQ+ visitor center recognized by the National Park Service. 

55 years since the Stonewall Riots

Friday marked  55 years since the Stonewall Uprising , which set off six days of clashes between police and LGBTQ+ protesters.

The Stonewall Inn is considered the birthplace of the gay rights movement.

On June 28, 1969, when homosexual acts were still outlawed in New York City, police raided the bar -- a place of refuge for the gay community and frequent target of harassment. 

The community had enough, and the riots that followed spearheaded LGBTQ+ activism in the United States.

"To be here in this place where literal history has been made, it's pretty powerful. And to hear that it's being celebrated in such a way, just adds that much more power to it," said Monica Jaso, who is visiting Stonewall from Chicago. "It just will kind of solidify that we have a place in history."

The inn can be accessed by the newly renamed Christopher Street-Stonewall subway station.

"Renaming this station is a recognition of that tremendous battle in our history," MTA CEO Janno Lieber said.

NYC Pride March and weekend events

New York City's annual Pride March is this Sunday, June 30. It dates back to 1970, one year after the uprising. 

The march starts at noon and steps off from 25th Street and Fifth Avenue near Madison Square Park.

This year's theme is "Reflect. Empower. Unite," with a focus on the power of people coming together for "Queer liberation and joy."

Pride events have been held all month, looking toward a future without discrimination, where all people have equal rights under the law.

French Far Right Wins Big in First Round of Voting, Polls Suggest

A surprise decision by President Emmanuel Macron to hold a snap election appears to have backfired badly, giving the National Rally a decisive victory, early projections showed.

The National Rally party on Sunday won a crushing victory in the first round of voting for the French National Assembly, according to early projections, bringing its long-taboo brand of nationalist and anti-immigrant politics to the threshold of power for the first time.

Pollster projections, which are normally reliable and are based on preliminary results, suggested that the party would take about 34 percent of the vote, far ahead of President Emmanuel Macron’s centrist Renaissance party and its allies, which took about 22 percent to end in third place.

A coalition of left-wing parties, called the New Popular Front and ranging from the moderate socialists to the far-left France Unbowed, won about 29 percent of the vote boosted by strong support among young people, according to the projections.

Turnout was high at about 67 percent, compared to 47.5 percent in the first round of the last parliamentary election in 2022, reflecting the importance accorded by voters to the snap election. To many it seemed that no less than the future of France was on the line with a far-right party long considered unelectable to high office because of its extreme views surging.

The two-round election will be completed with a runoff on July 7 between the leading parties in each constituency.

The result of voting Sunday does not provide a reliable projection of the number of parliamentary seats each party will secure. But the National Rally now looks very likely to be comfortably the largest force in the National Assembly, the lower house of Parliament where most power resides, although not necessarily with an absolute majority.

Final results from the Interior Ministry are not expected to be released until Monday.

For Mr. Macron, now in his seventh year as president, the result of the vote was a severe setback after he gambled that the National Rally’s victory in the recent European Parliament election would not be repeated. There was no obligation to pitch France into summer turmoil with a rushed vote, but Mr. Macron was convinced that it was his democratic duty to test French sentiment in a national ballot.

The first round of voting suggested the most likely outcomes now are either an absolute majority for the National Rally or an ungovernable National Assembly. In the second scenario, there would be two big blocs to the right and left opposed to Mr. Macron, and his much-reduced centrist party would be squeezed between the extremes into relative powerlessness.

If the National Rally wins an absolute majority, it is expected to take the prime minister’s office and name cabinet members, limiting Mr. Macron’s powers, though he would remain as president.

Projections from several polling stations suggested the National Rally would win between 240 and 310 seats in the runoff for the 577-seat National Assembly; the New Popular Front between 150 and 200 seats; and Mr. Macron’s Renaissance party and its allies between 70 and 120 seats. The ranges are broad because much can change in the week before the second round. For an absolute majority a party needs 289 seats.

Mr. Macron, whose party and its allies have held about 250 seats since the last parliamentary vote in 2022, has been frustrated in his attempts to achieve his agenda by his lack of an absolute majority and inability to form stable coalitions. Now, with his seats likely slashed, the situation looks much worse for him.

In a statement immediately after the projections were released, Mr. Macron said that “confronted by the National Rally, it is time for a large, clearly democratic and republican alliance for the second round.”

Whether that is still possible at a moment when the National Rally has the wind in its sails is unclear.

Both leaders of the left and of Mr. Macron’s party said they would urge their candidates to pull out of some constituency races where they finished in third place in the first round. The goal is to avoid splitting the vote and to join in an effort to prevent the far right from winning an absolute majority.

“We must unite, we must vote for our democracy, we must prevent France from sinking,” said Raphaël Glucksmann, who led the center-left socialists in the European election.

In a statement of its own, Mr. Macron’s party declared: “We cannot give the keys of the country to the far right. Everything in their program, their values, their history, make of them an unacceptable threat against which we have to fight.”

Marine Le Pen, the leader of the National Rally, declared that France had voted “without ambiguity, turning a page on seven years of corrosive power.” She urged her supporters to ensure that her protégé, Jordan Bardella , 28, become the next prime minister.

Gabriel Attal, 34, once a Macron favorite and now almost certainly the outgoing prime minister after just six months in office, said that “if we want live up to the French destiny, it is our moral duty to prevent the worst from happening.” He noted that never in its history had the National Assembly run the risk of being dominated by the extreme right.

Mr. Macron’s decision to hold the election now, just weeks before the Paris Olympics, astonished many people in France, not least Mr. Attal, who was kept in the dark. That decision reflected a top-down style of governing that has left the president more isolated.

Mr. Macron was persuaded that a dissolution of the National Assembly and elections would have become inevitable by October, because his proposed deficit-cutting budget was expected to meet insuperable opposition.

“It was better to hold the election now,” said one official close to Mr. Macron who requested anonymity in line with French political protocol. “By October, an absolute majority for the National Rally was inevitable, according to our polling.”

Of course, the National Rally might end up with an absolute majority now.

In the run-up to the election, Mr. Macron tried invoking every threatening specter, including a potential “civil war,” to warn people off voting for what he called “the extremes”: the National Rally with its view of immigrants as second-class and the far-left France Unbowed with its antisemitic outbursts.

He told pensioners they would be left penniless. He said the National Rally represented “the abandonment of all that forms the attractiveness of our country and retains investors.” He said the left would tax the vitality out of the French economy and shut down the nuclear power stations that provide about 70 percent of the country’s electricity.

“The extremes are the impoverishment of France,” Mr. Macron said.

But those appeals fell on deaf ears because, for all his accomplishments including the slashing of unemployment, Mr. Macron had lost touch with the people to whom the National Rally appealed. Those people, across the country, said they felt talked down to by the president and that he did not understand their struggles.

Looking for a way to express their anger, they latched onto the party that said immigrants were the problem, despite an aging France’s need for them. They chose the party, the National Rally, whose leaders did not go to elite schools.

The rise of the National Rally has been steady and inexorable. Founded a little more than a half-century ago as the National Front by Ms. Le Pen’s father, Jean-Marie Le Pen, and by Pierre Bousquet, who was a member of a French division of the Waffen-SS during World War II, it faced for decades an ironclad barrier against its entry into government.

This was rooted in French shame. The collaborationist Vichy government during World War II deported more than 72,000 Jews to their deaths and France was determined that never again would it experiment with an extreme-right nationalist government.

Ms. Le Pen threw her father out of the party in 2015 after he insisted that the Nazi gas chambers were a “detail of history.” She renamed the party and embraced the smooth-talking and hard-to-ruffle Mr. Bardella as her protégé. She also dropped some of her most extreme positions, including a push for leaving the European Union.

It worked, even if certain tenets remained unchanged, including the party’s euro-skeptic nationalism and its determination to ensure that Muslim women be banned from wearing a head scarf in public. Also unchanged was its readiness to discriminate between foreign residents and French citizens, and its insistence that the country’s crime level and other ills stem from too many immigrants, a claim that some studies have challenged .

For Mr. Macron, who is term limited and must leave office in 2027, a difficult three years appear to stretch before him. Just how difficult will not be clear until the second round of voting is over.

How he would govern with a party that represents all he has resisted and deplored throughout his political career is unclear. If the National Rally gets the prime minister’s job, it will be in position to set much of the domestic agenda.

Mr. Macron has vowed not to resign in any circumstance, and the president in the Fifth Republic has generally exercised broad control over foreign and military policy. But the National Rally has already indicated it would want to limit Mr. Macron’s power. There is no doubt that the party will try if it gains an absolute majority.

By calling a snap election. Mr. Macron took an enormous, discretionary risk. “No to defeat. Yes to awakening, to a leap forward for the Republic!” he declared shortly after his decision was made. But as the second round of the election looms, the republic looks wounded, its divisions lacerating.
