The world heritage listed Bungle Bungle Range is located within Purnululu National Park in the  Kimberley region  of Western Australia.

Purnululu, meaning ‘sandstone’, has long been inhabited by local Aboriginal people, but did not become widely known to the rest of the world until the mid-1980s.

Where are the Bungle Bungles?

Travelling along the Great Northern Highway, the turn-off to Purnululu National Park is approximately 250km west of  Kununurra  and 108km east of  Halls Creek . From the highway, allow about 2.5 hours to travel the rugged 53km  access track to the National Park . It's also possible to visit Purnululu National Park as part of a guided tour - choose from an extended 4WD tour through the Kimberley, or a shorter trip by scenic flight, some with the option to land within the park.

You'll find information here to help you plan your self-drive trip to the Bungles, including where you can camp or stay in cabins, to choose an extended tour that takes in the Bungles, or to plan a shorter sightseeing trip from Kununurra or Broome by 4WD or by air.

Explore Purnululu National Park

Bungles hikes and gorges.

The visitor locations at Purnululu National Park are found in its northern and southern ends, each with a range of walking trails and attractions that are well signposted. Campgrounds are also located in the northern and southern ends, with cabin and safari tent accommodation also available at the southern end.

Explore the range on foot and discover long narrow chasms and hidden gorges large enough to hold a full-scale concert.  Echidna Chasm, famous for its towering walls which are lit up by sunlight just before midday is found in the northern end, as is Mini Palms Walk where you can see some great examples of the Livinstonia Palm. The bee-hive striped domes of the Bungle Bungle range are found in the southern end of the park as is the breathtaking natural amphitheatre of red rock known as Cathedral Gorge, and the creek bed walk of Picaninny Gorge.

Purnululu National Park is also home to 130 bird species, as well as unique native animals including the nailtail wallaby and short-eared rock wallaby.

Northern End

This is a spectacular long, narrow chasm with striking colour variations, depending on the angle of the sun.

Southern End

To enjoy the walk trails through and around the magnificent striped domes of the Bungle Bungles, travel to the southern end of Purnululu National Park.

Bungles in the Wet Season

How do I get to the Bungle Bungle?

Access to the park by road is via Spring Creek Track, from the Great Northern Highway approximately 250km south of Kununurra, through Mabel Downs cattle station to the track's end at the Purnululu National Park Visitor Centre.

Why are the Bungle Bungle famous?

Famous for the 450 km2 Bungle Bungle Range, Purnululu has been listed as an outstanding landscape that is an incomparable natural phenomenon. It reveals the story of its formation over hundreds of millions of years, and helps unlock the story of the earth's history.

Who found the Bungle Bungle?

The park is known for the astounding Bungle Bungle range, which was only 'discovered' by a film team in 1983. Purnululu National Park was established in 1987 and skyrocketed to world fame in short time.

What do the Bungle Bungle look like?

The Bungle Bungle have a distinct orange-and-black-ringed pattern running down their surface. This is caused not only by the conglomerate nature of their make-up but from water getting trapped in denser layers, allowing algae to grow and form the darker colorations.

How tall are the Bungle Bungle?

The average height of the Bungle Bungle range is approximately 200-300 metres high and seems even higher whilst walking through the gorges and chasms.

What are the Bungle Bungle made of?

The distinctive beehive-shaped towers are made up of sandstones and conglomerates (rocks composed mainly of pebbles and boulders and cemented together by finer material). These sedimentary formations were deposited into the Red Basin 375 to 350 million years ago, when active faults were altering the landscape.

A Day Trip to the Bungles

Bungle Bungle Guided Tours

Our experience began in Kununurra, where we met at the Aviair terminal to be checked in for our flight to Purnululu National Park. After a quick safety briefing from our pilot, we were then taken out to the plane to board.

The flight ascended from the Kununurra airstrip and instantly the views were incredible. We soared over the lush farmlands, past the iconic Elephant Rock and followed Lake Kununurra as it snaked its way through rugged mountains and ranges to meet Lake Argyle. The vast size of Lake Argyle is something that can only be truly appreciated by air. With the lake going out as far as the eyes can see, there is no surprise that it contains over 18 times the volume of water contained in Sydney Harbour. We continued over the stunning Carr Boyd and Osmand Ranges and before we knew it, the formidable view of Purnululu was in front of us.

bungle bungles day trip

The iconic black and orange banded domes came to sight and it was interesting to see all the different formations below us. Our pilot circled around Bellburn Airstrip before landing, giving us an opportunity to see how remote this part of Australia really is.

bungle bungles day trip

After a smooth landing, the dust settled, and we had arrived! Once disembarked from the aircraft, we were met by our tour guides, who led us over to the shaded area for a quick morning tea and debrief of the day. As we devoured freshly made banana bread, Pete showed us where we will be walking and what we could expect to see.

We then boarded the Bungles 4WD adventure bus and drove the 25 minutes to the start of the hike. It was a beautiful drive, with the large black and orange domes coming closer into view. Once we had arrived, we had another quick debrief from our guides and given our lunch bags to carry for the hike.

The walk started along a rocky track the lead us amongst the giant domes. What appeared to be small as we flew over them, the beehive domes truly dwarfed us as we walked beside them. Despite thousands of years of harsh winds coming from the Tanami Desert, these sandstone formations remain distinctively shaped and rich in colour. We walked towards Piccaninny Creek, where the creek bed had recently dried up after the heavy wet season rain before making our way towards the towering cliffs leading into Cathedral Gorge. Our guides shared information about the history and cultural significance to both the Jaru and Gija people, who utilise parts of the area as traditional meeting places.

bungle bungles day trip

The path turned from rocky creek bed to soft sand and the sheer gorge walls engulfed us in welcoming shade. We continued on our way, enjoying the cool change before reaching the stunning views of Cathedral Gorge. This natural amphitheatre leaves you with a feeling you cannot describe and is impossible to capture on camera. We settled in to enjoy our packed lunch in the gorge, revelling in the silence of being the only ones there.

After lunch, we made our way out of the gorge and headed back towards the striped beehive domes. Following a slightly different track back to our bus, the sheer volume of these rocky formations still left us bewildered by the impressive feats of Mother Nature.

bungle bungles day trip

Back at the airstrip, we said our farewells to our guides and hello to our pilots. While it was nearing the end of our adventure, the flight back to Kununurra still had some incredible sights to surprise us with. Taking off from Bellburn Airstrip, we made our way over the rugged, rocky formations and watched as the landscape transformed from distinctive domes to giant gorges. We waved goodbye to Purnululu National Park and flew over the desolate and untouched East Kimberley landscape. Soon we were orbiting over the old Argyle Diamond and as we viewed the deep walls of the mine, our pilots informed us of its history and significance.

bungle bungles day trip

Soon the town of Kununurra came back in to the view, glowing under the beautiful afternoon sun. We orbited around the airport and over the Ord River before coming into land and end our tour.

Thank you to the team at Aviair and Bungle Bungle Guided Tours for taking us on this amazing journey through Purnululu National Park.

Bungle Bungles

Visiting the Bungle Bungles – all you need to know.

The Bungle Bungles is a World Heritage Area and part of the Purnululu National Park in the East Kimberley region of Western Australia.  It became a World Heritage Area because of its natural beauty and unique geological features – primarily the famous beehive-like domes.  Formed millions of years ago they weren’t commonly known about until the 1980’s.  It is totally unique and one of the most amazing landscapes in Australia.  Definitely one for the bucket list!  The park is open through the dry season from April to October.

Getting there

Firstly, it is not a day trip!  Approx. 4.25 hours drive one way from Kununurra (or 2.75 hours from Halls Gap) to the Bungle Bungle Visitor Centre and then you have another 40-45 mins drive to whichever side of the Bungles you want to go.

Caravans or anyone towing a trailer with a double axle cannot go further than the Bungle Bungle Caravan Park, 1 km off the main highway.  It is then a long 53km dirt road that is definitely only suitable for 4WDs.  The road starts off with just rough corrugations but then deteriorates into quite rough road with a few creek crossings.  It takes about 1.5 hrs to get to just the tourist information centre there.  Turning right will take you to the area full of the domes that it is known for, and also to the fabulous Cathedral Gorge plus some other lesser known walks.  Turning left at the Tourist Information Centre will take you to the popular Echidna Chasm and a Mini Palms Gorge walk and other walks.

the view driving in

Where to stay

So if you are staying in the Bungle Bungles Caravan Park just off the main highway (as we did) you won’t be able to do both sides of the Bungle Bungles in one day.  Sunset is about 5pm in late June (perhaps a little later in other parts of the dry season) and you definitely don’t want to be driving on that dirt road in the dark.  So with all the driving required and the hiking time, you would need two full days there.  And just to warn you that some people choose not to travel down that road again because it is so bad and so only do one day there.  We would have done a second day there but we would have had to get back to Kununurra by sunset and it just didn’t really leave us enough time.

The Bungle Bungles Caravan Park also has some cabins which we stayed in but just a few things to be aware of:

  • Book well ahead – with these places that are very isolated and without much choice in accommodation, it gets snapped up pretty quickly.
  • No internet reception except for the outdoor bar and restaurant area.
  • No phone reception
  • They were short staffed due to covid and so we could only book in for dinner on one night at the restaurant – luckily we had enough food to feed ourselves the other night.  So it might pay to book your dinner in advance too.

If you are camping or staying inside the National Park you may manage to visit both sides of the park in one day.  Although you would still not manage to do all of the walks.  The cabins or glamping are very expensive inside the National Park and you would need to book well in advance too.  But it saves you the time and effort of travelling on that rough dirt road a second day.  So although it is possible to hike the most popular short walks in a day, if staying inside the National Park, you would definitely need two full days to do most of it.

Places to stay inside the National Park that are not camping include the Bungle Bungle Wilderness Lodge and the Bungle Bungle Savannah Lodge .  Be warned – they are very expensive!

If camping, there are two campgrounds – Walardi and Kurrajong .  Very basic only, with bore water, no showers and bush toilets.  So you really need to be self sufficient!  The campgrounds are at least cheap.  At the time of writing this, it was $13 per person for either campground.  Bookings essential!

Helicopter rides and plane trips

If you are short of time or just don’t fancy driving down the awful roads you could either fly in or helicopter in from the nearby towns of Kununurra or Halls Gap as there is a small airstrip within the national park. They will then take you on a land guided tour/walk.  Obviously this is a more expensive way of seeing this amazing landscape but you’re saving on accommodation and time.  We did a short helicopter ride with the doors off from within the national park itself.  I can highly recommend!  They were also offering helicopter rides from our caravan park which were slightly more expensive and with doors on.

helicopter view of one of the gorges

What is there to see and do?

Apart from the abovementioned helicopter rides or flights (the airstrip is near the southern section), it really is about walking and exploring.

Southern Section

The part of the National Park has the orange and black striped domes that the area is famous for.  You’ll get lots of great views just driving to the car park.  From there you can choose to do:

  • Domes walk – a short easy walk around some of the domes.  A good one to start with I think.

bungle bungles day trip

  • Cathedral Gorge walk – another short walk that is connected to the Domes walk.  Cathedral Gorge is an amazing huge natural amphitheatre.  Possibly if you were there at the beginning of the dry season you might also get a waterfall too. Stunning place!

bungle bungles day trip

  • Piccaninny Creek walk – this was also pretty easy and there was a turn off to it as we returned from the Cathedral Gorge walk.  Lots of great scenery along the way too.  We went as far as the Piccaninny Creek lookout but you can go further.

We just did the above 3 walks but you can go further up to Whip Snake Gorge.  If you are planning to camp and have a multi-day walk deep into the Piccaninny Gorge you have to register first with the National Park.

Northern Section

We didn’t have time to get up here unfortunately.  But it’s most well-known walk would be the steep Echidna Chasm.  I really would have liked to have seen this one but sometimes you just can’t see everything.  If we only had time to walk the Northern or Southern section, I’m glad we did the Southern.

  • Echidna Chasm walk is short and initially you walk through a palm filled gorge but then it becomes narrower and narrower till it becomes about 1 metre wide.  Most people like to do this around late morning, midday or just after.  The light shining down off the red walls is meant to be quite stunning.
  • The Bloodwood and Mini Palms Gorge.  I’ve heard a lot of good things about this Mini Palms Gorge, apparently one not to miss apparently.  It takes a couple of hours and gets a bit steep.  But an enjoyable walk I believe with stairs for the steepest parts.
  • Homestead Valley walk – 4.4 kms and probably the least popular of the three walks but nice views for sure.

Upon arriving in Kununurra, the tour will head towards the renowned Bungle Bungles. These huge sandstone towers were molded by twenty million years of erosion and weathering. This all leads to the stunning, multi-coloured pillars we see today. Moreover, seeing them from the sky is an absolutely unbeatable experience, as only from there is it possible to understand the scale and unbelievable beauty of the ranges.

Afterwards, the tour will lead you to a lesser-known spectacle of the Australian Outback. Following the winding gorges of the Ord River, the tour reaches its pinnacle. Of an almost unrivalled majesty, the stunning Lake Argyle sits dormant. Revel in the beauty of this colossal freshwater lake moulded by the ancient landscape.

EXPLORE THE Purnululu world heritage listed national park

Punululu World Heritage Listed Park is part of Gija and Jaru Country who are the custodians for this country and these are our guides who take you through this incredibly beautiful landscape. It is a geomorphic phenomenon, the Bungle Bungle Ranges can be found in the world heritage-listed Purnululu National Park, about 300km south of Kununurra in the northwest of Australia. 30 million years of weathering have produced these spectacular orange and grey banded, bee-hive shaped towers. The complex maze found within towers is heightened by the twisting, narrow and sheer-sided gorges lined with lush green Livistona palms line the entry to Echidna Chasm offering a stunning contrast of colours. The towers, along with the soaring and jagged cliffs that rise up to 250 metres above, are cut by seasonal secret waterfalls and pools…

We could talk all day and tell you all about it, but this natural beauty really is something that should be seen (and experienced) for yourself.
