1. Nomadic Matt

Nomadic Matt

By:  Matthew Kepnes

I have to be honest with you — I love everything about  Nomadic Matt .

Everything from his website’s design to his personal writing voice makes for an engaging reading experience. Not to mention that the name “Nomadic Matt” really sticks with me.

Matthew Kepnes, AKA Nomadic Matt, was once a cubicle worker who admittedly wasn’t always a big traveler. On his first trip back in 2004, he went to Costa Rica where his perspective in life transformed forever.

A single trip — that’s how easy it is to fall in love with travel.

Today, Matthew continues living the life he was born for. He primarily blogs about travel tips, encompassing topics like how to save for a trip and things to do in Singapore.

Blog Topics

  • Travel Insurance
  • Travel planning
  • Saving money on travel
  • Travel gear
  • Destinations

Monetization Strategies

  • Display advertisements
  • Superstar Blogging online course
  • Affiliate marketing ( Check: Best Travel Affiliate Programs )

2. Backpacking Matt

Backpacking Matt

By:  Matt Kyhnn

I think there’s something about the name “Matt” that raises a person’s affinity for traveling.

Backpacking Matt , owned and run by Matt Kyhnn, is a travel blog that has similar vibes with Nomadic Matt. It has a simplistic design, a memorable content tone, and striking travel photos that bring the blog’s stories to life.

Matt Kyhnn also leverages videos — providing his audience a more immersive way to enjoy his content.

Fresh out of college, Matt simply decided that he won’t settle for a 9-5 job. Instead, he spent months working and traveling across Ireland, Scotland, and other regions in mainland Europe.

He then booked a one-way ticket to New Zealand where he now resides. In addition to his blog, Matt also runs his own travel planning and booking website — Planit NZ.

Blog Topics

  • Affiliate marketing
  • Planit NZ travel planning and booking services
  • Brand collaborations

3. Adventurous Kate

Adventurous Kate

By:  Kate McCulley

Kate McCulley, AKA  Adventurous Kate , is a travel blogger with lots of adventures to tell.

She’s been to 83 countries, seven continents, and plenty of experiences to help women appreciate the traveling life.

Kate’s blog was built during her time in Southeast Asia along with her freelance portfolio, which helped fund her travels. Her target audience is women who want to travel, but required guidance on how to do it safely and easily.

The “Solo Female Travel” category on her blog consists of posts about travel safety, travel planning, destination guides, and more. She also compiled a list of travel resources that help turn her audience’s travel ideas into action plans.

  • Travel safety for women
  • Sponsored posts

4. The Blonde Abroad

The Blonde Abroad

By:  Kiersten “Kiki” Rich

I covered Kiersten “Kiki” Rich of  The Blonde Abroad   in my list of the top lifestyle bloggers to follow in 2024.

As her blog’s name suggests, she’s mainly a travel blogger who also discusses two other lifestyle-related topics — blogging and photography.

Kiersten spent three, eye-opening months in multiple countries to re-envision the idea of “ success .” She succeeded in her goal and is now one of the most accomplished travel bloggers on the web.

The Blonde Abroad covers a range of topics from travel photography to foreign cuisine. All of which draws wisdom from Kiersten’s personal travel experiences.

  • Photography
  • Travel destinations
  • The Travel Shop
  • Social media and influencer marketing consulting

5. California Through My Lens

California Through My Lens

By:  Josh McNair

Josh McNair, owner of  California Through My Lens , has a distinct writing style that vividly describes details of travel destinations.

Unlike bloggers who discovered the love for travel in their adulthood, Josh has always been a passionate traveler at heart. He created California Through My Lens to document his adventures with the online audience.

California Through My Lens is run by both Josh and his wife, Amy. The pair also has an active YouTube channel called Through My Lens where they share their experiences in video form.

As you may have guessed, Josh’s content focuses on the beaches, caves, hiking trails, waterfalls, and various landmarks in California. Intricate details of each location, from hike distances to specific travel tips, are often included in his posts.

  • National parks in California
  • Driving around California
  • California destinations
  • Selling eBooks
  • Advertisements through YouTube

6. Dan Flying Solo

Dan Flying Solo

By:  Daniel “Dan” Clarke

Dan Flying Solo   is by Daniel Clarke — a travel blogger, photographer, and creative director at his own Portugal-based media company.

Dan’s blogging life was ignited by his passion for photography. He was originally a frustrated restaurant manager who wanted more out of life.

Like me, Dan is a self-taught blogger. He worked day in and day out by doing free online courses, YouTube tutorials, and heaps of informative guides.

What makes Dan Flying Solo an extra noteworthy blog is its library of video content. Daniel also makes it clear that the site has no particular theme — not unlike everything else in life.

“ There’s not one particular theme to this blog because I don’t think that’s how life really is. We change and what we enjoy changes.”

7. Travel with Lakshmi

Travel with Lakshmi

By:  Lakshmi Sharath

Lakshmi Sharath worked on a desk job for multiple media organizations for 15 years. She then started her personal travel blog in 2005 — traveling to over 25 countries and across every corner of India.

Travel with Lakshmi has only grown steadily ever since. It won multiple awards, including “India’s best travel blog of the year” award from Indiebloggie.

As an Indian herself, Lakshmi made sure to highlight the country’s top travel destinations on the blog. She also documented her travels to foreign countries — from Abu Dhabi to the United Kingdom.

As a way to support aspiring travelers around the world, Lakshmi also covers important tips on starting a travel blog. This includes essential tips on photography, travel planning, and travel writing.

8. foXnoMad

foXnoMad

By:  Anil Polat

foXnoMad   is a unique travel blog run by digital nomad Anil Polat.

Anil was exposed to travel at a young age because his parents were journalists. Other than routine trips between Turkey and the United States, they also visited multiple destinations around the world.

Even in his professional life as a computer security consultant, travel was a big part of Anil’s life. He eventually decided to quit his job and fixate on one goal: to visit every country in the world.

What makes foXnoMad unique is that Anil utilizes his knowledge in tech to provide insightful tips on traveling smartly. He also develops apps that can help travelers in situations like determining water drinkability and calculating tips.

You can check out his podcast where he talks about current events, new product tech releases, and all things travel-related.

Some of the most prominent content formats in his blog are “ways to say” posts and phrase listicles. There are also fun, bite-sized stories like “How I Learned French on the Toilet in 6 Months.”

For more serious language learners, Fluent in 3 Months offers “The Challenge.” It’s a full-fledged online course that will enable you to hold a 15-minute conversation in a new language.

  • Travel budgeting
  • Influencer marketing through 360 Degree Travel Network

11. Alex in Wanderland

Alex in Wanderland

By:  Alexandra Baackes

Alexandra Baackes created  Alex in Wanderland   for two reasons.

First, she’s been dealing with a case of wanderlust all her life. And second, she’s a fan of a beloved, fictional character — Alice in Wonderland.

Alexandra is originally from Brooklyn, New York where she purchased her one-way ticket into the traveling life. She now blogs about the best travel destinations, outdoor activities, and her personal, travel-related gear.

One of the things I like about Alex in Wanderland is the presentation and categorization of content.

On the “Categories” page, Alex makes sure articles are well-organized based on topics like travel inspiration, activities, and planning. This makes it easy for her audience to find the information they need at any given time.

  • Outdoor activities

By:  Nadine Sykora

Nadine Sykora of  Hey Nadine   is a popular travel blogger, YouTuber, and social media influencer.

  • Video production
  • Advertisements through YouTube
  • Sponsored content

13. I Am Aileen

I Am Aileen

Just like Kiersten Rich, Aileen Adalid is another travel blogger whom I also featured in my top lifestyle blogs listicle.

Aileen runs  I Am Aileen   — an award-winning blog that discusses just about everything there is to discuss in travel. She writes about destinations, the best travel activities, foreign cuisine, and more.

What interested me the most about Aileen is her blogging background. At age 21, she quit her corporate job, which only paid $300 a month, to become a professional traveler.

Since then, she’s been on a streak of smashing goals and breaking barriers. Thanks to her commitment to quality content, she’s recognized as one of the top bloggers in Asia.

  • Online shop

14. Wandering Earl

Wandering Earl

By:  Derek Earl Baron

Here’s a fun trivia about  Wandering Earl .

Unlike most bloggers who use their first names, the “Earl” in “Wandering Earl” is actually a middle name. Blog owner Derek Earl Baron only thought that “Wandering Derek” didn’t sound as catchy.

Derek is a one-of-a-kind, adventurous soul who discovered his purpose as a modern nomad relatively early into adulthood. After graduating in 1999, he planned a three-month vacation across Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam.

That three-month vacation continues to this very day.

And that’s how Wandering Earl was created — documenting Derek’s adventures in over 100 countries. He also shares valuable pieces of wisdom on travel planning, food, budgeting, gear, and so on.

Wandering Earl has that “old-school” look and feel to it. On the plus side, the site’s design only highlights

  • Working while traveling
  • Selling “eGuides”

15. Be My Travel Muse

Be My Travel Muse

By:  Kristin Addis

Be My Travel Muse  is a solo female travel blog created by Kristin Addis.

She studied in Taiwan and kept an investment banking job for four years. The only problem was, her daily routine rendered her creative, dreamer side claustrophobic.

Her first step was a one-way ticket to Bangkok — envisioning a life of writing and travel. That’s exactly what she accomplished with her blog, which now caters to millions of readers all over the world.

Kristin believes that solo traveling is the best way for women to feel empowered and more confident. She prioritizes solo female travel tips on her blog, including guides on safety, packing, and maintaining relationships.

Be My Travel Muse also has heaps of content on popular travel destinations and self-care for women.

  • Self-help for women
  • Relationships
  • The Photo Muse Masterclass online course

16. Followtheboat

Followtheboat

By:  Liz Cleere and Jamie Furlong

Followtheboat   is a unique travel blog that focuses on a specific mode of transport: sailing.

It is created with love by a travel writer Liz Cleere and photographer Jamie Furlong. There’s also Millie the rescue cat, which functions as a source of inspiration and encouragement for the blog’s human founders.

Despite the focus on sailboats, Followtheboat’s content isn’t just made for sailors. The posts are tailor-made for travelers who also happen to be interested in the art and joys of sailing.

Don’t be surprised at the humor and dynamic range of topics on the blog. You’ll find posts like “tools you need on a sailboat” and “is this the weirdest loo in the world?”

Followtheboat also has a library of podcasts, which record Liz and Jamie’s experiences on their travels.

  • Boat maintenance
  • Patreon donations

17. Matthew Woodward

Matthew Woodward

By:  Matthew Woodward

If Followtheboat is about boats, you can probably guess what  Matthew Woodward   is a blog about trains.

Not to be mistaken for  Matthew Woodward  the internet marketer, Matthew Woodward the rail adventurer loved trains as a child. He owned model railway sets, traveled alone by train, and watched shows about trains on TV.

In his time as a geography student, he explored Europe with his trusty Interrail pass. He set his passion aside to focus on his career, which he eventually gave up to become a travel writer.

Today, he blogs about railway systems over different continents. He’s also an accomplished author of three books: “The Railway to Heaven,” “A Bridge Even Further,” and “Trans-Siberian Adventures.”

  • Railway systems
  • Traveling by train
  • Selling books

18. The Opposite Travellers

The Opposite Travellers

By:  Ryan and Rachel Riel

The Opposite Travellers   were created by married couple Ryan and Rachel Riel.

While both loved to travel, Ryan and Rachel had contrasting preferences when it comes to traveling.

Rachel prefers to travel in style and luxury — through the accommodations and services offered by establishments and travel agencies. Ryan, on the other hand, leans toward daring adventures like biking and trekking — on $5 per night accommodations.

The couple, however, utilized their differences as a selling point in The Opposite Travellers.

As such, the website’s “Travel” section has two main categories: “Luxury Travel” and “Adventure Travel.” In other words, the blog has a diverse content library for travelers of all tastes and budgets.

The Opposite Travellers also boasts high-quality visuals taken and produced by Ryan Riel. All of the site’s videos are published on Ryan Riel Media — Ryan’s official YouTube channel.

20. Bucket List Journey

Bucket List Journey

By:  Annette White

Travel is all about adventures, and so is life.

That’s the essence of the  Bucket List Journey   by Annette White.

The blog’s tagline is “tools and inspiration to live your list.” It refers to a person’s “bucket list,” which is basically a list of goals and experiences they want in life.

Annette didn’t always have such a positive outlook in life. She used to be diagnosed with anxiety, which caused her to miss out on life-enriching experiences and opportunities.

Eventually, she decided that she’ll no longer become a prisoner of fear and uncertainty. She had courage and took charge of her life’s direction — something every aspiring blogger needs to do at one point.

Bucket List Journey talks about bucket list-worthy destinations, motivation, money, and travel tips. Annette also imparts knowledge on people who also struggle with facing fear and making braver life decisions.

  • Overcoming fear and anxiety

21. Migrationology

Migrationology

By:  Mark Wiens

When I first visited  Migrationology , I wasn’t sure whether to classify it as a food or travel blog.

Then I checked out Mark Wiens’s “About” page. There, I learned that he viewed food as a way to connect with people in various cultures.

And to be exposed to these cultures, Mark dedicates his time, money, and efforts to travel.

Mark makes sure the blog only focuses on content based on his personal travels. It’s made for people who want to experience the flavors of the world — in person or through Mark’s posts.

Apart from general food travel blog posts and city guides, Migrationology also offers readers a “Food Tour” service. It is the result of a year of research done by Mark himself — in partnership with  Bangkok Vanguards .

  • Bangkok Food Tour

22. The Cranky Flier

The Cranky Flier

By:  Brett Snyder

We already mentioned a blog about boats and another about trains. It’s time to talk about a blog on airplanes and air travel.

Cranky Flier   is a unique blog created by Brett Snyder — President and “Chief Airline Dork” of Cranky Flier LLC.

Brett has been fascinated with airlines all his life. When he was young, he collected airline timetables and even spent a birthday with his grandmother watching planes land.

As an adult, he spent several years in the airline industry fulfilling multiple roles. He became a sales intern at USAir, senior analyst at America West, marketing planning product at United, and so on.

Today, Brett publishes his opinions about the airline industry on Cranky Flier. He also updates several series, like “Worst Airline Ever,” “Airlines We Lost,” and “Across the Aisle Interviews.”

I’ll let you determine what these series are all about based on what they’re called.

  • Airline industry
  • Cranky Concierge service

23. Never Ending Footsteps

Never Ending Footsteps

By:  Lauren Juliff

Lauren Juliff is one of those bloggers who already knew what they wanted to be from an early age.

She dreamt of traveling to new places, meeting new people, and exploring new cultures.  Never Ending Footsteps   is proof that she accomplished all three.

The blog consists of posts about Lauren’s fulfilling travels to different countries. But unlike a lot of famous travel bloggers, she also talks about the downsides of being a digital nomad.

Never Ending Footsteps has a “The Incidents” blog section where Lauren discusses the not-so-sexy aspects of traveling. She has been scammed, attacked by monkeys, locked out of her room, lost her passport, and more.

Despite these incidents, Lauren’s love for travel only grew. Such experiences increased her wisdom and travel acumen — resulting in some of the most insightful travel articles ever published.

Lauren also helps her audience get into the world of travel blogging. Check out “How to Start a Travel Blog” for information on web hosting, working with WordPress, and so on.

A Dangerous Business Travel Blog

By:  Amanda Williams

A Dangerous Business Travel Blog   is a straightforward blog made to help people travel.

It is created by Amanda Williams, who is a former journalist with degrees in journalism, hospitality, and tourism management.

25. Against the Compass

Against The Compass

By:  Joan Torres

How do you make a travel blog stand out?

Joan Torres has a surefire answer: covering the most unusual and “off the beaten track” destinations.

Against The Compass   is a unique blog that talks about the travel routes and destinations you probably haven’t heard of. It covers destinations that people don’t normally include in their bucket list, like Pakistan, Tunisia, Syria, and other high-risk countries.

Of course, Joan makes sure to highlight the importance of safety when traveling in relatively low-popularity destinations. He has comprehensive guides for solo female travel, travel insurance, and general travel safety.

  • Travel insurance

26. Everything Everywhere

Everything Everywhere

By:  Gary Arndt

In travel blogging, a picture is undeniably worth a thousand words. There’s simply no excuse for any travel blogger to forego the inclusion of visual content in their posts.

Gary Arndt’s absolutely nailed it with his photography work for  Everything Everywhere .

Gary actually won multiple, major travel photography awards — more than any travel photographer. His photography is so good that I suggest you check the “Travel Photos” page on Everything Everywhere.

Go ahead, take a break and thank me later.

Other than taking breathtaking photos, Gary also publishes detailed blog posts about the places he’s been. He’s been on the go for roughly 9 years non-stop, which means readers will never run out of material.

27. The Longest Way Home

The Longest Way Home

By:  David Ways

The Longest Way Home   started as the personal travel journal of David Ways — a solo traveler in search of home.

The blog originally started as David’s private, digital diary. As he journeyed across Europe and gained experience, it turned into a full-on blog with travel guides to specific locations.

David finally found home in Nepal before traveling to other parts of Southeast Asia.

He’s not the most nitpicky blogger in terms of grammar and spelling, but he’s definitely a brilliant storyteller. He’s also skilled in capturing and immortalizing moments into photos, which you can view on his blog’s gallery.

The Longest Way Home has a library of content about various destinations, trekking, and travel planning. It also features in-depth travel guides to Nepal, Thailand, and overland travel — plus a mini-guide to Portugal.

  • Travel planning
  • Overland travel

28. Global Grasshopper

30. HoneyTrek

HoneyTrek

Believe it or not,  HoneyTrek   is a travel blog about a honeymoon.

Yes — it’s probably the longest honeymoon ever.

Together, they’ve honeymooned to over seven continents and 60 countries while creating the most romantic travel blog in the process.

  • Personal opinions
  • Social media marketing

32. The Adventurists

The Adventurists

By:  Tom Morgan

The Adventurists   is hands down one of the most well-designed travel blogs in this post.

The blog proves that integrating tons of video content into one page doesn’t have to affect its loading speed. In fact, the site loads surprisingly fast despite having several video panels on the homepage.

I’m not going to delve too deeply into this technical feat. What I’m going to focus on, however, is the brilliant team behind The Adventurists.

The site is founded by “Chief Idiot” — Tom Morgan. Apparently, most of the crazy ideas featured on the blog were his.

Every page on the site reflects Morgan and his team’s wackiness and passion for great adventures. They do, host, and document daring outdoor activities on air, land, and sea — plus, a whole lot of charity.

Their audience can also participate in these activities, which can be held in various parts of the globe. The “Monkey Run,” for example, is an event where participants race through dirt trails on tiny bikes.

The bottom line is, it’s hard to come up with unique ideas that set you apart in the blogging landscape. The Adventurists, on the other hand, managed to do so multiple times.

The site doles out travel advice, inspiration, photography tips, food reviews, and posts about must-see destinations. It also has a library of high-quality videos where Yaya and Lloyd describe their experiences in detail.

Yaya and Lloyd started the blog in 2014 with a plan to share their travel stories with the world. Within a few hours, they published their first posts using photos they already took and edited.

The moral of the story is, consider starting a blog if you already have a library of unused travel photos.

35. Travel4Wildlife

Travel4Wildlife

By:  Christina Garcia and Hal Brindley

It should only take anyone a second to figure out what  Travel4Wildlife   is all about.

The blog is created by couple Christina Garcia and Hal Brindley out of their passion for wildlife.

Hal is an experienced wildlife photographer for organizations like the Nature Conservancy Magazine, SEE Turtles, and RARE Conservation. Christina, on the other hand, is an experienced zoologist who worked on studies on wolves, cheetahs, and leopards.

Travel4Wildlife’s goal is to increase awareness and increase the appreciation for wildlife. More importantly, it was Christina and Hal’s life goal to promote wildlife conservation through responsible tourism.

Behind the scenes, the couple teams up to create compelling articles that focus on wildlife in specific destinations. The blog covers a range of species on different continents — from owls in South Africa to polar bears in Canada.

  • Wildlife tour reviews
  • Responsible travel

36. The Insatiable Traveler

The Insatiable Traveler

By:  Susan Portnoy

Susan Portnoy, also called  The Insatiable Traveler   on her blog, is a seasoned travel writer and photographer.

Susan’s last full-time job was VP of corporate communications at Condé Nast. When that door closed, she took on a freelancing career as she learned the art of photography.

Fast forward a few years, and she has enough accolades to make photography degree holders envious.

Her photographic works were featured by organizations like National Geographic and companies like Bing. She also won awards like the SATW Lowell Thomas Award and the 2018 Gold in the Muster Photo Competition.

The main focal points of The Insatiable Traveler include destinations, cruises, photography, and travel gear. Susan also covers the safaris in various regions, like Tanzania, Namibia, and Kenya.

37. View from the Wing

View From The Wing

By:  Gary Leff

Just like Brett Snyder, Gary Leff of  View From The Wing   is an expert in all things air travel.

Gary was named one of the “World’s Top Travel Experts” by Condé Nast Traveler since 2010. He also co-founded InsideFlyer.com — a community made by and for frequent flyers.

View From The Wing is a goldmine of timeless tips on airline miles, credit cards, hotels, and business travel. No matter your sub-niche in travel, I recommend checking it out for ways to maximize your frequent flyer miles.

Gary also publishes posts called “Trip Reports” about establishments, food, and various attractions.

38. Uncornered Market

Uncornered Market

By:  Daniel Noll and Audrey Scott

Dan Noll and Audrey Scott are a pair of adventurers, storytellers, and tourism advisors who advocate for responsible traveling.

They created  Uncornered Market   — a responsible tourism blog — after leaving their secure and stable lifestyle in Prague. Prior to that, they lived in San Francisco and took a leap of faith for the sake of avoiding regrets.

It’s clear that both Dan and Audrey believed that fulfillment can’t be found within the confines of your comfort zone. They explored, made connections, and shared their experiences through their travel blog.

Some of the topics you’ll find in Uncornered Market are about destinations, sustainable tourism, food, and trekking. Dan and Audrey also write about personal growth and experiential travel.

Uncornered Market is also a tourism development and marketing consultancy company. They help travel companies, destinations, and tourism organizations build their brands and deliver their message to a wider audience.

39. Jessie on a Journey

Jessie on a Journey

By:  Jessica “Jessie” Festa

Like plenty of bloggers, Jessica Festa needed a taste of life before discovering her true calling.

In her youth, Jessie traveled to mostly cruises in the Caribbean and road trips in North America. She also experienced being a sightseeing guide in New York.

Jessie on a Journey   is the result of her pursuing her dreams of getting paid to do something she loves. She now blogs about being a solo female traveler, blogging it, and profiting off of it.

I’m sure a lot of big-name bloggers are all too familiar with how Jessie made the blogging vision a reality.

For a long time, she felt that the workaday lifestyle isn’t for her. It made her feel like she’s living everyone else’s life — not the kind of life she wanted to keep.

Despite the disapproval of loved ones, Jessie decided to quit her secure job in favor of being a travel blogger.

She was just as unprepared as most people before starting their own blog. The key difference is, she went out there and took her first step.

  • Travel blog consulting
  • Tour company consulting

40. Legal Nomads

Legal Nomads

By:  Jodi Ettenberg

Back when Jodi Ettenberg was in law school, she never would’ve guessed she’d run a successful travel and food business.

That happens to a lot of people, especially those who never thought of giving priority to their passions.

It’s just a hunch, but I think the name  Legal Nomads   had something to do with Jodi’s background in law.

Legal Nomads highlights destinations and local cultures just as insightfully as other travel blogs. What makes it different is that Jodi focuses on local cuisines to experience and tell the stories of each destination.

A huge part of Jodi’s blog is about wellness and gluten-free eating. She then utilized her knowledge and experience to create detailed restaurant cards, which travelers can use when visiting certain countries.

  • Gluten-free restaurant cards
  • The Legal Nomads Shop

41. Indiana Jo

Indiana Jo

By:  Jo Fitzsimons

Like Jodi Ettenberg, Jo Fitzsimons also used to practice law before becoming a successful travel and lifestyle writer.

Indiana Jo   started way back in 2010 where Jo can comfortably type away her thoughts and musings. Fed up with her full-time job, she went out to see the world as a digital nomad.

It wasn’t always smooth sailing for Indiana Jo, however. According to her, she thought about quitting the blog several times before finally realizing that it’s a lifetime thing.

Jo writes about her travel experiences, destinations, wine, and food. She also shares travel planning tips along with a long list of content about topics that personally interest her.

  • Travel health and safety

42. TravelFreak

TravelFreak

By:  Jeremy Scott Foster

TravelFreak   is the brainchild of Jeremy Scott Foster who left America in the middle of a recession and to Australia.

For a while, he racked up some savings as a traveling bartender. It took some time before he finally made the switch to be a digital nomad and online entrepreneur.

Jeremy created the blog to help people create opportunities to achieve the fulfilling life they deserve.

He writes about travel advice, destinations, gear, and ways to get your finances in order as you travel. This includes guides on how to land and keep a job abroad along with resources on reliable booking websites.

I personally like the way Jeremy designed TravelFreak to provide the best possible user experience. Unlike a traditional layout, the site features a search bar so readers can jump right into the content they need.

TravelFreak has been featured in Forbes, National Geographic, The New York Times, and a few other big-name publications.

43. The Everywhereist

The Everywhereist

By:  Geraldine DeRuiter

Before anything else, yes — that’s Rand Fishkin in the photo above.

And yes, the next travel blogger on this list is Rand’s longtime sweetheart and wife.

Geraldine DeRuiter was a former copywriter and went with Rand in his travels, which are often business-related. She then turned to the habit of documenting their travel experiences, which she described as “love letters” to her husband.

Today, Geraldine works full-time on  The Everywhereist   — named by Time magazine as one of the best blogs in 2011.

The Everywhereist contains posts about food and Geraldine’s travel experiences along with a comprehensive Philadelphia travel guide. The guide contains information on where to go, eat, shop, and stay.

Geraldine also wrote a book called “All Over The Place.” It chronicles how she embraced her love for blogging after being laid off, which aspiring bloggers can draw inspiration from.

44. Keep Calm and Travel

Keep Calm and Travel

By:  Clelia Mattana

Keep Calm and Travel   is a travel blog created by serial traveler Clelia Mattana.

Ever since she was 19, Clelia is a certified sea lover and globetrotter. But like many travel bloggers, she was given a choice between a secure job and the traveling lifestyle.

Clelia’s finalized her choice when she bought a one-way ticket to Asia. She then created Keep Calm and Travel to send a simple message:

“No matter what your age is, or your budget, or status, you can travel and live your life on your own terms.”

The blog’s topics include destinations across continents, photography, and travel gear. She also has a dedicated page for Sardinia, which is one of her absolute favorite travel destinations.

45. Practical Wanderlust

Practical Wanderlust

By:  Lia and Jeremy Garcia

Lia and Jeremy Garcia, who aptly labeled themselves a “travel couple” on Instagram, are the minds behind  Practical Wanderlust .

Jeremy is a film degree holder whose passions include writing and directing. He also became a high school teacher who taught filmmaking and digital media art.

Lia, on the other hand, has a fashion design and apparel merchandising degree. She took on roles in corporate merchandising before becoming a business systems analyst.

Why did I tell you all this? Simple: I want you to know what the pair had to give up pursuing their dreams of traveling.

Practical Wanderlust’s goal is to help other people enjoy travel in the most realistic and sensible approach possible. The blog is filled with detailed content on planning memorable trips on a budget, where to go, and staying safe.

Lia and Jeremy also host their own podcast, which is available on Google Podcasts, Spotify, and Apple Podcasts.

  • Coaching and mentoring services
  • Sponsored podcast episodes

46. Expert Vagabond

Expert Vagabond

By:  Matthew “Matt” Karsten

Matthew Karsten, AKA the  Expert Vagabond , has been a travel blogger, photographer, and digital nomad for nine years.

He talks about budget travel tips, destinations, travel photography, and strategies to make the digital nomadic life work.

Matt is a business degree holder who spent time freelancing as a nightlife and event photographer. While he admits it was fun, he knew that he wants and deserves something more.

After a year of downsizing his life, eating homemade food, selling eBooks, and saving every penny, he was ready. He set out to obtain a different kind of wealth — that which is made with adventures and experiences.

47. The Voyageur

The Voyageur

By:  Pauline Chardin

Pauline Chardin is a France-based fashion designer, photographer, and art director.

She always had a soft spot for travel — driven by her appreciation for picturesque architecture, landscapes, and good food. She started  The Voyageur   to help people view the world through her voice and eyes.

The Voyageur is a simple, yet aesthetic website achieved through Pauline’s incredible photography skills. Apart from itineraries and posts about hotels, food, art, and architecture, the site also has a sizeable photo gallery.

Images are accompanied by a brief article that describes the destination’s history and Pauline’s thoughts and emotions during her visit. I’m not sure what it is, but there’s something about this content format that’s truly engaging and relaxing.

  • Art and architecture

48. Amateur Traveler

Amateur Traveler

By:  Chris Christensen

Don’t be fooled by the name —  Amateur Traveler   is by no means run by an amateur.

Chris Christensen is a skilled photographer, travel writer, and podcast host. The site also utilizes a long list of monetization strategies that I believe every blogger should learn.

True, he wasn’t the most experienced traveler when he started the blog. Before he created Amateur Traveler, he was a full-time EVP of engineering and operations for a company based in Silicon Valley.

In his defense, he grew up in a family that traveled a lot to national parks in a trailer. He also learned a lot of foreign languages, which he believes is a window into understanding and embracing different cultures.

Amateur Traveler discusses destinations, travel budgeting, planning, gear, and booking. The site also features a weekly podcast on the top destinations around the world.

  • Social media and content marketing consulting services
  • Content writing services

49. Girl Eat World

Girl Eat World

By:  Melissa Hie

Melissa Hie is the “Girl” in  Girl Eat World  — a name that encapsulates what the whole blog is all about.

You see, Melissa’s three passions are food, travel, and storytelling. She started the blog in 2015 as a digital diary for herself and friends who need travel tips.

Prior to her blog’s success, she amassed quite a following on Instagram. This springboarded her blogging career, which she put in the back burner after focusing on her full-time career.

Girl Eat World is essentially a compendium of Melissa’s travel stories and travel planning guides. She also has an iconic style of capturing Instagram posts, which must be seen to be appreciated.

50. The Adventure Junkies

The Adventure Junkies

By:  Antonio Cala and Amanda Zeisset

The Adventure Junkies   is definitely not your average travel blog.

It’s not just about the travel stories of founders Antonio Cala and Amanda Zeisset. Upon visiting the blog for the first time, you’ll realize that it’s all about the community the blog has built.

New visitors are encouraged to join “ Summit ” — a free community for people who seek adventures through travel and outdoor activities. There, members can connect, plan events, share posts, ask questions, form groups, and discuss anything related to travel.

The Adventure Junkies also compile guides and resources about outdoor activities like diving, kayaking, mountain biking, and snowboarding. There’s also a section for visitors who’d like to learn about outdoor and underwater photography.

Antonio and Amanda started The Adventure Junkies as a personal blog about their three years of cycling. Over time, their readers began asking questions on how they can plan their own adventures.

The couple then realized that they need to create something more than a personal blog. As such, they transformed The Adventure Junkies as a one-stop shop for adventurists.

51. A Broken Backpack Travel Blog

A Broken Backpack

By:  Melissa Giroux

Melissa Giroux used to be a social worker who only traveled once a year.

Melissa created  A Broken Backpack   a year after her journey in the Canadian Rockies — hitch-hiking from point A to B. She continued working on her blog as a creative outlet while working on a farm in Australia.

It didn’t take long before A Broken Backpack’s popularity gained momentum and gave Melissa a new frontier.

The website contains crucial tips on travel gear, budgeting, destinations, and the life of a digital nomad. Melissa also put together in-depth guides on travel blogging, moving to another country as an expat, and backpacking.

David Leiter is an American travel blogger currently based in Bali, Indonesia, with his wife Intan (who’s a Bali local).

They travel around the world and try to document the most scenic destinations by creating articles, photos, videos, and guides for other travelers.

David runs  The World Travel Guy , an adventure travel blog that he started when he was a solo traveler, but now covers their travels around the globe as a couple.

In total, they’ve visited dozens of countries, while also checking off some bucket list adventures like a Komodo dragon safari in Indonesia, the Mount Everest Base Camp trek in Nepal, and a bunch of world monuments like the Angkor Wat and Taj Mahal.

53. Life Part 2

Life Part 2

By:  Jonathan Look Jr. and Sarah Wilson

The last blog on this list that your best life can start at any time you choose.

Let me tell you the story behind  Life Part 2   and the people behind it.

Jonathan Look Jr. and Sarah Wilson are both happy retirees with a simple mantra: “don’t waste your retirement.”

To them, retirement isn’t about being comfortable and secure. Rather, it’s all about the freedom to listen to your heart and follow where it takes you.

Jonathan and Sarah met in Chiang Mai, Thailand where they both agreed to see the world as a couple.

Life Part 2 is a mix of all things travel. At times, there’ll be a post about remote destinations and backpacking, and at other times, the theme is luxury travel.

You will, however, notice that the content topics on the blog often revolve around retirement, minimalism, and travel.

Planning to go on your own travel adventures? Perhaps you’re thinking of starting your very own travel blog?

It doesn’t matter if you’ve got a case of wanderlust or the desire to be a travel blogger yourself.

The list above has some of the best travel blogs ever created. They can provide you with ideas and inspiration for your next trip or first-ever travel blog post.

If you think I missed a great travel blog that everyone should read, let me know in the comments below. Good luck!

Travel Better, Cheaper, Longer

My Current List of Favorite Travel Blogs

current list of favorite travel blogs

I’m not going to lie: I think I have a pretty good travel blog. (You probably do too if you’re here.) I work hard to provide excellent practical travel advice to help you travel better, but I’m not the only great travel blogger out there. In fact — and I know this might be shocking — there’s a lot about travel that I’m not an expert on. Family travel? No idea. Travel as a woman? Clueless. Information on hotels? Only a little. Photography? I can manage to turn my camera on if that counts. Food expert? Only at eating it.

I’ve realized that it’s been a while since I last talked about the best travel blogs out there — the ones I read — so I wanted to take a moment and highlight some of my favorite travel blogs that can also help you travel better, cheaper, and smarter. There are so many good blogs out there, I feel like I’m long overdue to point you to some of them:

Book Your Trip: Logistical Tips and Tricks

Book Your Flight Find a cheap flight by using Skyscanner . It’s my favorite search engine because it searches websites and airlines around the globe so you always know no stone is being left unturned.

Book Your Accommodation You can book your hostel with Hostelworld . If you want to stay somewhere other than a hostel, use Booking.com as it consistently returns the cheapest rates for guesthouses and hotels.

Don’t Forget Travel Insurance Travel insurance will protect you against illness, injury, theft, and cancellations. It’s comprehensive protection in case anything goes wrong. I never go on a trip without it as I’ve had to use it many times in the past. My favorite companies that offer the best service and value are:

  • SafetyWing (best for everyone)
  • Insure My Trip (for those 70 and over)
  • Medjet (for additional evacuation coverage)

Want to Travel for Free? Travel credit cards allow you to earn points that can be redeemed for free flights and accommodation — all without any extra spending. Check out my guide to picking the right card and my current favorites to get started and see the latest best deals.

Need Help Finding Activities for Your Trip? Get Your Guide is a huge online marketplace where you can find cool walking tours, fun excursions, skip-the-line tickets, private guides, and more.

Ready to Book Your Trip? Check out my resource page for the best companies to use when you travel. I list all the ones I use when I travel. They are the best in class and you can’t go wrong using them on your trip.

M eet a Travel Designer: Cruise Expert Cheri Ozimac

travel designer blog

Cheri Ozimac knows travel – and cruises, especially. She’s been a Travel Designer with Tully Luxury Travel for 15 years and, having been on dozens of cruises herself, is confident there’s “a ship for everyone.” Ozimac is also a new member of The 1000 , a community of top-producing travel advisors from around the world founded last year by industry veterans Tim Morgan and Jeff Sirota. “I’m honored,” says Ozimac of the recognition, “especially after a challenging couple of years for everyone in the travel industry.” Despite the difficulties of the last two years, Ozimac is seeing a strong desire from her clients to get back out there, and the inquiries are steady: “There’s a lot of pent-up demand for travel – a 2024 World cruise with Oceania sold out in 30 minutes,” she says. “It’s an exciting time; the comeback is always greater than the setback.” Here, Ozimac shares more about her role as a Travel Designer; some personal favorite destinations, and what’s trending in the cruise world right now. What does the role of a Travel Designer entail? It involves building and cultivating relationships, asking the right questions, listening to and understanding clients’ interests and preferences, and sharing my personal experiences and passion for travel. We plan trips from beginning to end, customizing them to highlight our services and take each one to the next level. We also advise on our recommendations for touring, pre-and post-hotels, transfers, and documentation – including visas and COVID-19 entry requirements. So, what does a typical day look like for you? I can be working on any type of request from a new or existing client, which can vary from someone who doesn’t know where or when they want to travel, and who is flexible and open to suggestions, to someone who may already have something in mind, which we can then build on with our VIP amenities and value-added services. When working with a client for the first time, what’s your process for determining the best cruise and destination for them? I’ll ask them if they’ve cruised before and, if they have, which cruise lines they’ve sailed with, to get an idea of their travel style and history, as well as what they liked and perhaps didn’t like about it. And sometimes it can be a matter of timeline, too – if they only have a certain window and they’re looking for a higher-end ship, it can depend on the time of year. For example, in the summertime, you’ll usually find those high-end ships in the Mediterranean, Alaska, or the Baltic. In the winter, they’re in the Caribbean, South America, South Pacific, Australia, or Asia. I’ll ask questions such as where, when, and for how many days, and get a feel for their interests and price point. If they’re into entertainment, some of the cruise lines offer more Broadway-style productions. Some ships spend more time in port and are more about the destination with fewer offerings onboard. Each ship has something to offer – and the ship can be a destination as well. For someone who’s never cruised before, where would you suggest starting? Many new ships and cruise lines are coming out in the market and, for first-time cruisers, I suggest doing a shorter cruise and one that’s closer to home to get a feel for it. So, for North Americans, the Caribbean, Canada/New England, and Alaska are good places to start. Usually, a Western Mediterranean Cruise will follow (France, Italy, and Spain), then the Eastern Mediterranean, British Isles, and Panama Canal.

You have comprehensive knowledge about the cruise world from your years of experience in the industry, but also from cruising yourself, right? Yes, my expertise lies with cruises, so anything on the water – ocean, river, yacht, expedition, or barge. I’ve been on most cruise lines several times on various types of vessels. A river cruise is the most convenient way to travel inter-Europe. What do you love about cruising? It’s the convenience of it all – not having to schlep your luggage or check in and out of hotels and airports – and being able to see so many places on one vacation. Onboard, the choices are endless; it’s up to you to do as much or as little as you want. Sometimes, when you’re in port, it’s nice to let everyone get off the ship and have it to yourself. What’s been your top cruise experience? Regent and Silversea are superior with their spacious suites, superb dining choices and cuisine, six-star service, and luxurious amenities on board. The Regent Explorer is the most beautiful ship I’ve seen to date – everything is top-notch. Do you have a favorite cruise destination? I never tire of the Amalfi Coast and French Riviera; I love the food, style, and scenery in both destinations. In Ravello, on the Amalfi Coast, I had lunch at Caruso (a Belmond property) and the view was so spectacular – it’s a slice of heaven up there! Can you share some cruise trends you are seeing for 2023-2024? People are leaning towards smaller ships and there is a lot of interest in expedition and river cruising. There are new itineraries to more remote destinations, such as Antarctica, Greenland, Iceland, and Spitsbergen. There is also a lot of interest in private charters in Alaska and barges in Europe. Finally, do you have any upcoming trips or cruises planned yourself? I will be sailing soon on the newest Silversea ship (to experience the Otium spa and the S.A.L.T. Lab culinary experience). I’m also planning a river cruise in the fall along the Douro River in Portugal – it’s very popular these days.

What Is A Travel Designer?

Chances are, you’re familiar with or have some prior experience with a travel agent, consultant or concierge.

However, while there is some overlap, travel designers are fundamentally different in many respects and seek to take personalization and client relationships to the next level. Below, we will dive into the specific elements of a travel designer and the key role they play in creating itineraries and rising to the challenge of going the extra mile for their clientele.

What is a Travel Designer?

travel designer blog

What distinguishes a travel designer from other types of travel planners is the deep personal relationship between the professional and client . Travel designers are similar to interior designers in that they possess a keen eye for detail. It is not uncommon for travel designers to choose properties based on their own careful and continuous scrutiny, taking into consideration distinctive elements of certain lodging styles or activities and how a client would enjoy them.

That being said, the focal point of a travel designer is getting to know clients better so they can best suggest properties that will show them their ideal and/or dream travel experience. This often paves the way in setting up surprises for the clients and making sure the lodges have amenities that will enhance a client’s stay. In order to achieve this, travel designers work in the upper end of the market and will create an itinerary from scratch. This allows them to provide white glove one-stop-shop service, tailoring to the client’s specific needs and desires and taking care of everything, including flights, transfers, activities, accommodations, specific tours, reservations, visas, immunizations , luggage, and more.

Ubuntu Travel’s Speciality

travel designer blog

The Ubuntu Travel team, specifically Leah Green, is a Travel Designer with expertise booking trips in Africa and the Indian Ocean Islands . Her product knowledge and firsthand experience with African safari lodges and safari activities position her as one of the best in her field. This truly allows her to design once-in-a-lifetime experiences for her clients. What Leah appreciates most about her job is the challenge of going the extra mile; it is her creativity, wealth of experience and worldwide connections that she enjoys utilizing in her work.

Typical Processes and Protocol

travel designer blog

For new inquiries and clients, the Ubuntu Travel team holds an intake phone call or “discovery meeting”, in which the main objective is to get to know the client: who they are, what they are looking for, what their past travel experiences have looked like, and what preferences they have. Additionally, it’s important to identify travel experiences that have stood out to them in the past so that it’s easier to prioritize what may be important to them for future travel.

Once sufficient information has been collected, itinerary design begins, followed by a review session with the client to ensure things are on the right track. After this stage, the travel designer works to refine and further customize. After travels have been officially booked, the line of communication between travel designer and client remains open to ensure that clients have everything they need, from visas to correct luggage to layover items. Once on their trip, the Ubuntu Travel team make themselves personally available to clients, in addition to an on-the-ground team in Africa who can provide in-person assistance if needed or desired.

Booking Your Next Trip

Are you ready to start planning your next trip? At Ubuntu Travel, our passion is creating and leading trips for families, groups and couples all over the African continent. Our goal is to design truly one-of-a-kind, immersive and unforgettable experiences for our clients. There is nothing we enjoy more than dedicating our time to ensuring others are able to have the same magical experience we’ve been so fortunate to have time and time again. We consider our client’s family and go above and beyond in every way to ensure their safety and maximum enjoyment.

What is a travel designer, and how to become one

November 03 2023

travel designer blog

Are you passionate about exploring new places, planning adventures, and helping others discover the joys of travel? So are we, and that’s why we think being a Travel Designer might be one of the coolest jobs you could get. Travel designers are the architects of unforgettable journeys, curating unique experiences for travelers who seek more than just a standard vacation. In this article, we'll dive into what a travel designer does and explore different paths to embark on this very specialized career. If travel is your passion, a career as a travel designer might be your calling.

travel designer blog

What is a Travel Designer? A travel designer is like a personal concierge for travelers. They go beyond booking flights and hotels; they create tailor-made itineraries that align with their clients' desires, interests, and budgets. A travel designer's responsibilities often include the following tasks.:

Understanding Client Needs : The first step is to get to know your clients. What are their travel goals? Are they looking for adventure, relaxation, culture, or a mix of everything? By understanding their preferences, you can craft the perfect journey.

Researching Destinations : A travel designer must be well-versed in various destinations worldwide. They research and recommend places that match the client's interests and ensure they are well-versed in local culture, cuisine, and attractions.

Creating Unique Itineraries : The art of a travel designer lies in crafting unique itineraries. They plan every detail, from accommodations and transportation to activities and dining options.

Handling Logistics : Travel designers manage all the logistics, from booking flights and accommodations to securing reservations at top restaurants and organizing guided tours.

Providing Support : Throughout the trip, travel designers are available to assist their clients, addressing any issues that may arise and making adjustments to the itinerary if necessary.

travel designer blog

So how do you become a Travel Designer? There is no clearly defined path to becoming a travel designer. But your success will be driver by your own passion for travel and a strong desire for a career path in the travel industry. Here are few tips on how to start your journey towards working as a Travel Designer.:

Gain Travel Experience : Before you can design journeys for others, you need to be an experienced traveler yourself. Explore different destinations, immerse yourself in local cultures, and broaden your horizons.

Obtain Relevant Education : While not always necessary, having a background in travel and tourism can be beneficial. Consider pursuing a degree or certification in hospitality, tourism management, or a related field.

Build a Network : Networking is essential in the travel industry. Connect with travel professionals, tour operators, hotel managers, and others who can provide valuable insights and opportunities.

Develop Destination Expertise : Focus on becoming an expert in specific destinations or types of travel. Whether it's adventure travel, luxury getaways, or cultural experiences, having niche expertise can set you apart.

Gain Industry Experience : Start by working in the travel industry. This could involve working at a travel agency, tour operator, or even as a travel consultant. This hands-on experience will help you understand the ins and outs of travel planning.

travel designer blog

Or you could become a Travel Influencer? In recent years, a unique path to becoming a travel designer has emerged: leveraging social media and becoming a travel influencer. Many travel influencers and content creators have begun hosting guided trips to their favorite destinations. Here's some suggestions on how you can combine the two career paths and start chasing the Travel Designer dream.:

Build Your Brand : Start a travel blog or social media presence focused on your own adventures. Share captivating stories, stunning photos, and travel tips to build a following.

Establish Expertise : Develop a niche within the travel industry. It could be a specific type of travel, such as eco-tourism or solo travel, or a particular region of the world.

Partner with Brands : As your influence grows, collaborate with travel-related brands, hotels, and tour operators. This can help you gain experience and build connections in the industry.

Host Guided Trips : Once you've built a substantial following and established your expertise, consider hosting guided trips to destinations you know well. Your followers may be eager to join you on their dream journeys.

Offer Customized Travel Services : Use your platform to offer personalized travel planning services. Leverage your travel influencer status to connect with clients who seek your expertise in crafting their ideal trips.

travel designer blog

Becoming a travel designer, whether through traditional routes or as a travel influencer, is a rewarding career for those passionate about travel and helping others explore the world. It's a profession that combines creativity, cultural knowledge, and a love for adventure to create unforgettable experiences for travelers. So, if you're ready to embark on a journey of creating journeys, start by building your expertise, network, and passion for travel. Who knows, you might soon be designing dream vacations for eager travelers from around the world.

What is a Travel Designer?

You may fit into this category yourself. How involved are you with your clients? Do you talk to them, even meet with them in between trips? Are you already discussing travels plans for 2-3 years down the road?  When you’re traveling yourself, are you doing specific research for certain clients (taking photos or videos of rooms you’d book for them, menus at restaurants…)?

Meet Your Next Travel Designer

With so much to see and do, planning a trip to France isn’t easy. French Side Travel’s experts are here to help. Our travel designers have the knowledge to help you create the trip you’ve been longing for!

About me : I am an American who has had the opportunity to travel all over – Canada, Europe, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, and Mexico, and have made lasting friendships throughout the world. Through some of those friendships I was lucky enough to meet a girl from the south of France and I ended up marrying her! After living together in the U.S. for 11 years, we decided to come back to her home and raise our 4-year-old son, and it’s been an incredible experience so far.

Every traveler should : Visit the hidden gem of Corsica. It is often overlooked in favor of Paris/Loire Valley/Normandy/Provence, but it is an incredible island with beautiful beaches, scenery, and culinary food.

My personal highlight in France : I would have to say my personal highlight in France was the first month or two after I moved here, they were special since I was exploring my new surroundings and discovering life as a “local”. It’s a highlight finding the secret cafés, little-known restaurants, hidden beaches, and getting a deeper sense of the history of the region.

About me:  I am an Armenian American who was born in Iran and lived in Los Angeles, CA for many years. I moved to Aix-en-Provence, France in 2013 to start my new life adventure. After working in different industries including sales for many years in the US, I obtained a Master’s Degree in Communications and Marketing from an International University in Aix-en-Provence. In 2023, I joined French Side Travel in the sales department. I enjoy working with people and the customer experience and relationships. My mission at French Side Travel is to create the most unique and unforgettable vacation packages in France for our unique clients. I have traveled to many countries in Europe and the Middle East and since I moved to France, I have visited many regions in France and I have to say that we can find everything in this beautiful country. From the sea to the mountains, to the desert, or the dunes, and from the busy city to the wine country. Everyone can find their happiness here based on their interests. Every traveler should: From a personal view, I love the quiet charming villages in France where you can explore and find surprises everywhere, taste the regional foods, and meet people. My personal highlight in France: I also love the French Riviera and our French beaches where I feel safe to swim during the summer and to taste a rosé wine during apéro. Coming to France feels like we are in a real dream and at French Side Travel, we want to make your French dreams come true.

About me : I am a French woman from Marseille. I am passionate about my country and my region Provence and I love to share this passion! I really enjoy designing trips to show all the wonders of France.

Every traveler should : Visit the Alpilles to enjoy one of the most wonderful landscapes in Provence. My advice is to spend some time strolling through the picturesque streets of Les Baux-de-Provence. Change of scenery guaranteed!

My personal highlights in France : Our country has so much to offer between the mountains, the beaches, the history, and the gastronomy… There is something for everyone! I personally like Brittany very much for its great beaches, unique landscape, and gastronomy.

About me : Born and bred in Germany, I spent a few years in the Mediterranean region, before choosing Paris as my second home more than 20 years ago. What do I enjoy about living in Paris? Despite its old walls, historic landmarks, and magnificent renowned monuments, the French capital is an ever-changing open-minded cultural melting pot full of surprises.

Every traveler should : It’s difficult to say! Each region surprises with its authentic beauty. As a Corsica expert, I love the small island’s rustic, quirky charm, and amazing scenery. Provence is a sparkling gem boasting culture, nature, good wine & food – everything your heart desires under an azure blue sky.  As a wine lover, I enjoy wine tasting in the Bordeaux area near the wide sand beaches of the Atlantic Coast lined by fragrant pine trees. But what about the idyllic Loire Valley, the “Garden of France” with its sumptuous chateaux? History aficionados will want to take a trip to the landing beaches.

My personal highlight in France : Visiting the colorful and abundant markets! You will be awed by the array of fresh produce and local delicacies. The local producers and market vendors will delight you with a wordy tasting à la française.

About me : I am a French woman from Angers, a beautiful city in the Loire Valley. Traveling has been part of my life since I was very young, I had the chance to explore several destinations with my family, on my own, and through my work. I also spent a year in Australia and a few months in London. Today, I enjoy working and traveling in my country and appreciate all its parts, gastronomy, nature, history…

Every traveler should : Discover all the specialties in each region of France! There’s so much to see and do. Sit on a terrace, taste the French gastronomy, and observe the local life!

My personal highlight in France : There are so many, but if I had to choose 1 or 2… I would say the French Alps with their beautiful landscapes and hiking. A real paradise on earth! Also Paris, day or night, there is always a place to go, a good restaurant, a street to discover, a monument to admire…

About me : Native of Lyon, I grew up in the beautiful French Alps. After my studies, I moved to Paris to work as a Tour Operator. I was selling trips to many countries over the world and I was passionate about it. After a year and a half, I had an opportunity that brought me to Marseille. I chose to settle there and I quickly enjoyed the Provencal lifestyle. I love living by the sea, as I find the sound of the waves so peaceful and I love hiking in the Calanques. I joined French Side Travel and began to sell trips to France because my country deserves to be known and discovered as there are so many wonders.

Every traveler should : Immerse themselves in French gastronomy, which is so diverse and tasty. Each city or region has a specialty that is a must-eat. I suggest having a Cannelé in Bordeaux, a Tartiflette in the Alps, a Choucroute in Strasbourg, a Pissaladière in Provence, and drinking various wines in Loire Valley, Burgundy, and Champagne. Enjoy!

My personal highlight in France : Luberon National Park is my happy place. It offers incredible landscapes of nature, overlooking the vineyards and the mountains. Moreover, many small beautiful villages are located there, some of which are part of the “Most Beautiful Villages of France”. I love wandering in the cobblestone streets and taking photos of the unique panoramas.

About me: Born in Paris but born to travel! After my studies in tourism, I lived in several countries as Spain, England, New Zealand and Australia. Passionate about discovering the world and its treasures, new cultures and new people. I love hiking, and I’m glad to be living in Marseille now to enjoy its wonderful landscapes.

Every traveler should: Get off the beaten tracks and go discover places that you don’t know about yet. France has a lot to offer, lots of different beautiful regions with various cultural, historical and food histories. Don’t hesitate to do local activities and discover the local places, the little villages and the nature all around you.

My personal highlight in France: Corsica, “l’Ile de beauté” has breathtakings views all around the island and various landscapes. You can do also great walks and find out about the local gastronomy. Brittany, one of my favorite regions of France with magic landscapes, gastronomic and culture history everywhere. Park National des Calanques, for its great hikes and sceneries. The french’s moutains views.

About me : Born in Brittany and raised in Provence, I have never been far from the sea. When I was little, I spent all my vacations on the beaches of Brittany. Nice, the Gulf of Saint-Tropez, Aix-en-Provence, Toulon, and now Marseille have welcomed me. I don’t know how to be far from the sea. Having family in Alsace, Brittany, Occitania, Paris, and even Guadeloupe is a great advantage too. Curious and dynamic, I always want to learn and discover new things. I love to find things that are off the beaten track.

Every traveler should : Get lost in a town or village by following your instincts. Of course, try the local food. France has so much to offer. Visit all the regions of France for the diversity of landscapes and the activities and gastronomy associated with them. The culture of each region is also worth discovering.

My personal highlight in France : If I had to keep only 3:

  • Get the chance to spend a night on the marvelous Porquerolles island in winter. When the island is empty of visitors, the real Porquerolles life begins.
  • Walking in a Breton village, finding one of those unofficial stores where Breton grandmothers sell “crêpes”, tasting them on a bench facing the ocean. Then walk around at low tide to collect shells.
  • Have a picnic on any beach in France. With cheese, wine, baguette, and a sunset.

About me : At the end of my Master in Tourism Studies in Switzerland, I chose the sun of the South of France and Provence for my internship. I then had the opportunity to stay at French Side Travel to grow with this company and create great offers for our partner travel agencies around the world. I love designing attractive and authentic trips that show all the best that France has to offer, including outdoor activities, culture, food, and wine of course!

Every traveler should : Go behind the obvious and discover the small streets of the towns and villages you cross. Looking up and admiring the facades and decorations of the buildings, there are always unusual or funny elements to discover. And what could be better than a guided tour with a local guide to accompany you on your walk?

My personal highlight in France : A night visit to the Mont-Saint-Michel! When the sun sets and visitors leave the rock, the village becomes calm and silent again. Through the winding streets, you will feel like you are back in the time of the knights.

About me : My name is Frank. I was born and raised in New Jersey not far from New York. France has been my biggest passion since I was 16 years old. I came here on a life-changing trip that eventually led to my relocation to Paris in 2015. Since then, I’ve gotten my degree in tourism at a French university, and I have been working as a Travel Designer ever since. I speak English, French, and a bit of Italian. I cannot wait to help you bring your dreams of coming to France to life.

Every traveler should : Take the time to relax! The French art of living is accessible to everybody and takes place in its cafés and restaurants. Every traveler should also take their time. France is one of the richest countries in the world with regard to culture and things to see.

My personal highlight in France : My personal highlight in France is its border regions, the regions that border other European countries in particular Alsace and the Basque Country. These regions are rich in histories that predate France’s current borders and offer a unique perspective into the history of this great country.

About me : Originally from Holland, I have been lucky enough to exchange the cold Dutch climate for the pleasantly warm temperatures of the South of France, thanks to my French husband. All my life I have been attracted to other cultures and environments. That is why I chose to study hotel management. When I go on vacation, I prefer to go to countries that have a completely different landscape and culture than I am used to. During my childhood, we went on holiday to France every summer, but never to the same place twice. Each region of France has a different beauty, cuisine, and identity. As a result, you never get tired of France, there are always new stunning places to discover.

Every traveler should : Take their time during their vacation. Sit on a terrace and taste the local products. Let the environment around you affect you. Try to get out of your habits and try new things. The most beautiful souvenirs are memories!

My personal highlight in France : It is impossible to choose just 1 because they are all so different. I love the Alps where you have breathtaking views and delicious cheese fondue. I am also a big fan of the Côte Sauvage in Brittany, the rugged coastline with beautiful cliffs and idyllic beaches. It is the perfect place to clear your mind and get a breath of fresh air. Lastly, I also would say Provence, here you will find charming villages, delicious wine, an azure blue sea, and a romantic hilly landscape.

About me: Half French and Half South African, I have lived my whole life in France. I was lucky to travel at a very young age and have traveled ever since. I love French culture, history and especially French gastronomy! I have been working in the travel industry for several years, and I love promoting the beautiful country of France; there is so much to see and experience!

Every traveler should: Discover the specialties of each region, spend time with locals to learn more about French culture and who, of course, will be able to suggest the best places to eat. Wander around to discover off-the-beaten tracks and make the most of the French culture

My personal highlight in France: Burgundy is a beautiful region, there is so much to see in terms of cultural sites and of course gastronomy and the best wine! I also love Bordeaux and the southwest of France, which is so unique with beautiful landscapes and a great atmosphere

About me : I’m an American lucky enough to call Paris home. Living in Paris is wonderful because there’s always something new to discover, whether it’s a smaller museum, a great neighborhood café, a quiet park, or exquisite architectural detail. When I’m not in Paris you’ll find me on the coast of Normandy near Mont-Saint-Michel, which is an area I love sharing with travelers.

Every traveler should : Visit Paris and then start seeing the rest of France. Each region has its own history, culture, gastronomic tradition, scenery, and more. There’s so much to see and do. Some of my favorite places to start are Normandy, the Loire Valley, Bordeaux, and the Côte d’Azur.

My personal highlight in France : Port-Cros, an island just off Hyères. It’s a National Park with great hiking, snorkeling, scuba diving, and so much beauty. There are no cars or even bicycles allowed on the island so you’re completely on foot. It’s a place that’s different from anything else I’ve experienced in France.

About me : I am an American living in Marseille with my French wife and our dog Nola. I have always had a passion for travel since my first overseas trip to Ireland when I was six. After graduation, I went to work as a sales rep in the craft beer industry. I enjoyed the work, but left it because of a deep desire to explore the world! I have since lived in Australia, Laos, and now France.

Every traveler should : Go for a walk in the village or city you are visiting. Getting lost in its small and cramped streets is a great way to see France. You’ll come across magical places, not in guidebooks or travel blogs.

My personal highlight in France : The Calanques National Park between Marseille and Cassis. Just 25 minutes from my house, I can see my favorite part of France whenever I want to hike with my dog or go for a swim.

About me : Active and curious, I try not to go twice to the same place as there are so many spots to visit in France and abroad! My holidays are usually very busy but now I tend to take my time to relax, listening to the sound of the birds, admiring the beauty of a mountainous landscape, and smelling the perfume of the ocean.  I also do my best to engage in a sustainable tourism approach.

Every traveler should : Enjoy the French specialties, and eat in a Michelin-starred restaurant and at the local market!

My personal highlight in France : A gateway in the Vercors and the Baronnies Provençales, not that famous but a gorgeous region between Lyon and Provence!

About me: Born and raised in Madagascar, I came to France when I was ten. I grew up in Provence, and ever since I left my native country, I’ve loved travelling, discovering new places, meeting locals, and experiencing new culture. So much so that I studied foreign languages because my dream as a little girl was to travel the world and be able to communicate easily. I can speak five languages – Malagasy, French, English, German and Spanish, and I’m learning Portuguese now. After experiencing life in Lyon and Germany, I returned to my dear South to study and work in the travel industry, but also because I missed the sun’s warmth and wanted to be closer to the sea.

Every traveler should: Try solo traveling every now and then. I love traveling with other people because it’s always nice to have someone to share the adventure and the memories with, but I think it’s also a great experience to travel on your own. It can be therapeutic.

My personal highlight in France: I’m an island girl so, unsurprisingly, I am very fond of the sea. I particularly love the Mediterranean Seaside, from Marseille to Nice. Some of the most beautiful beaches are down that road, as well as the most charming cities and villages, like Cassis – along with its Calanques -, Sanary-sur-Mer, or Port-Grimaud – as known as the Venice of Provence -, to mention a few of my favorites.

About me : A native of Burgundy, I settled in beautiful Provence 20 years ago where I started working in the tourist industry. I had the chance to travel around the world while working for a Tour Operator here. Then I joined luxury incoming travel agencies, where I helped create trips of a lifetime for visitors to France.

Every traveler should : Taste wonderful wines in Burgundy, live the magic of Christmas in Alsace, discover wonderful Paris, enjoy the sun of Provence, experience the luxury of Riviera, ski in the French Alps, travel into the past at Loire châteaux, breathe in the huge Normandy beaches… France is a cultural & historical mosaic where every traveler can find happiness!

My personal highlight in France : We are lucky to have so many different and beautiful sights in Provence. I love the Verdon Canyon and the Calanques National Park!

About me : I was born and raised in the south of France, so I have had the opportunity to experience Southern culture and vibes my whole life. I have always loved traveling and discovering new places so I find great pleasure in helping others plan the trip of their dreams. My hobbies include long walks on the beach, snorkeling, and eating hearty French food.

Every traveler should : Go to places that locals recommend, do not be afraid to ask anyone you meet in your travels for tips, they will also give you the best places to eat or drink. Making friends in foreign countries often starts like this!

My personal highlight in France : The Gorges du Verdon is my favorite place ever, the endless canyons and winding rivers give you the impression of being in the Grand Canyon, not to mention the turquoise blue lakes, simply beautiful!

8 Travel Destinations For Interior Designers Ready for a Creative Recharge

7 ways to create luxury interior design on a limited budget.

travel designer blog

  • Margot LaScala July 31 2023 . 7 min read

With so many global centers of art and design to choose from, it was nearly impossible to whittle our list down to eight destinations for travel-bound interior designers seeking inspiration along with requisite rest and relaxation. From iconic design go-tos like New York, to the less traveled artistic centers like Seto Inland Sea, Japan, our list covers every place interior designers need to know when planning their next vacation, a.k.a. creative recharge.

Mexico City, Mexico

Gilardi House by Luis Barragán; photo credit: Dwell

Mexico City is first on our list of top travel destinations for interior designers in search of a revelation. Founded by the Aztecs in 1325, it is the oldest city in the Americas . After being ravaged then rebuilt by the Spanish in the 16th Century, the city has long represented a unique juxtaposition and, at times, merging of cultures and design conventions. When Mexico became independent from Spain in 1821, a distinctly original, Mexican aesthetic quickly developed, reflecting its cultural history, the colors and textures of the landscape, and sophisticated integration and participation in global artistic movements. In 2018, the World Design Organization named it a Design Capital of the World, thereby making official what was a long understood by international art and design aficionados.

When visiting, make sure you visit the Casa Luis Barragán , a UNESCO World Heritage site and a renowned example of modern architecture that uses levers of interior design, such as lighting, color, and interior/exterior connection to provide visitors with a sublime experience. For another immersion in color and playful take on the vernacular architecture of the city, head over to Casa Azul (the ‘Blue House’), the former home of famed artist, Frieda Kahlo, which is now a museum dedicated to telling her life story through the objects, dwelling, and neighborhood she cherished most. To shop for local wares, including ceramics, textiles, and hand crafted furniture, check out La Ciudadela , then stroll around the corner to Onora Casa, a boutique with a curated selection of hand-crafted textiles and home goods created by Mexican artisans. At the end of the day, rest your head at the sleek Hotel Carlota , designed by Javier Sanchez. If you happen to be visiting in October, Design Week Mexico will be going on from the 3rd through the 27th!

Copenhagen, Denmark

The Blox Project

Danish design rose to prominence in the mid-20th Century, making a significant contribution to the mid-century modern movement. Contemporary design in the city of Copenhagen often reflects the same sleek, minimalist aesthetic of the era in which Danish design rose to international prominence, but this medieval city offers a stunning array of design diversity, if you know where to look.

Begin your visit at the city’s most important medieval landmark, Roskilde Cathedral , which was built in 1170 as the first brick Gothic Cathedral. For your next stop, check out Nyhavn, a 17th-century waterfront district, lined with 17th and early 18th century townhouses painted in bright, cheerful colors, where you can stop for coffee or lunch and enjoy the historical wooden ships that rest on the canal. Juxtapose these historical design wonders with a visit to the cutting edge Danish Architecture Center , housed in a building designed by OMA. When you are ready for some shopping, check out “The Apartment,” a gallery/boutique in the Christianshavn neighborhood that showcases 20th-century furniture, contemporary art, and design. More interior design favorites include “ Illums Bolighus ,” another high-concept gallery, and Hay House , offering products that are the epitome of Scandanavian design.

New York, NY

The Beekman Hotel

New York City has been a leader of the international art and design community for so long, one may take it for granted when thinking about where to travel for a design-centric jaunt. However, with so much new construction, particularly over the last decade, there is always something new to see. If you haven't walked the Highline , now is the perfect time to see the finished project. This linear, garden-lined walkway, built on raised, abandoned train tracks, begins on the Lower West Side of Manhattan and ends at the now finished Hudson Yards. While the whole walk is only 1.5 miles, leave enough time to stop and marvel at Zaha Hadid’s 520W28 , plus plenty of time to explore the many architectural experiences of Hudson Yards, including the “Vessel” and  Snarkitecture’s Snark Park .

There are no shortage of places to shop in New York City, which houses many flagship showrooms from the best designers in the world. While you’re in Hudson Yards, be sure to check out the new 1stDibs showroom , where guests can have an interactive experience with the online gallery’s finest pieces. For one-stop multi-showroom shopping, head east to the Decoration and Design ( D&D ) and the Architecture and Design ( A&D ) buildings. Soho and Gramercy are also beautiful neighborhoods to stroll through with plenty of hot showrooms to stop in along the way.

When you are looking for a place to stay, check out the Edition Times Square , designed by Yabu Pushelberg, or the Hoxton Williamsburg , a super stylish, yet affordable option in one of the city’s hippest Brooklyn neighborhoods. The Beekman Hotel is another great option, and is worth a trip downtown to have dinner or a drink at its Temple Court or Augustine restaurants.

Paris, France

Marché aux Puces de Saint-Ouen

Paris, like New York, is already well known to interior designers, but deserves a place on the list nonetheless. Designers headed to Paris must visit the world famous flea markets such as Marché aux Puces de Saint-Ouen et Clignancourt , the Marché Paul Bert, and the Marché Serpette inside at Rue des Rosiers. Designers acquainted with 1stdibs.com will find the Marché aux Puces de Saint-Ouen et Clignancourt familiar, since the online platform was designed to resemble this internationally celebrated “flea market”. Next, head to the Le Marais neighborhood to explore the art galleries and local design vendors, then to Rue Bonaparte from Boulevard Saint-Germain toward the Seine for furniture stores, more galleries, and fabric showrooms, such as Nobilis. For more show-stopping antiques, go to Galerie Patrick Seguin to peruse pieces by Charlotte Perriand and Jean Prouvé,. Pierre Jeanneret. For a little history, check out Le Courbousier’s Paris apartment , which as of November 2018, is reopened to the public. Then, stop for dinner and drinks at Beefbar Paris , a trendy nightlife destination housed in an ornately refurbished 19th-century atrium, just off the Champs Elysées.

New Orleans, LA

Brennans

New Orleans has a rich and deep history, with several cultures coming together to form a distinct aesthetic that defines this lively U.S. city. Native Americans were the original settlers of the land, dating back to 400 A.D, before the Europeans conquered the land and ushered in an era of colonialism in the 18th century. The city of New Orleans was officially founded by the French in 1713, quickly fell to Spanish control, reverted back to French control, and then finally become a U.S. territory with the Louisiana Purchase in 1803. For much of its history, it was the largest port in the Southern U.S., bringing even more global influences to the vibrant city.

One of the landmark buildings in New Orleans is the The Orpheum Theater , designed by Gustave Albert Lansburgh in 1918 and restored by local architecture firm Eskew+Dumez+Ripple to revive its original color palette and intricate plasterwork. Visit the Hermann-Grima and Gallier Historic Houses to see what domestic life and design looked like in 1800s New Orleans, then stroll through the St. Louis Cemetery No. 1 to understand how notions of the afterlife shape the New Orleans aesthetic. If you’re ready for different type of spirit after the cemetery, book a table at Brennan’s in the French Quarter, which was recently renovated by designer Richard Keith Langham (a long-time user of DM!). Commander's Palace is another great choice for a taste of local design and delicacies. For shopping, don’t miss The French Market on Sunday, when the city’s flea market is open for business. When it’s time to sleep, check in to the Hotel Monteleone , a four star French Quarter hotel that is also a historic landmark.

Haji Lane in Kampong Glam

Singapore has something for every art and design lover. While it is a leader in cutting edge design and architecture, it offers historical charm as well. Orchard Road, the city’s luxury shopping area, is worth a visit, if only for its interesting architecture. The houses on Emerald Hill are early 20th century Chinese Baroque, while new structures like ION Orchard , designed by Benoy and featuring an art gallery, an observation deck, and a multi-sensory media wall, is sleek and modern. The Kampong Glam neighborhood is another design gem, with vibrant murals and multi-ethnic restaurants, antique stores, and coffee shops. If you are seeking an experience of grandeur, visit the golden-domed Sultan Mosque, a national monument that hosts bustling night markets during the holiday time of Ramadan.

The city offers no shortage of delightfully designed hotels to choose from. The Raffles Hotel is a beautiful colonial building with decadent interiors that was built in 1887.  For something more modern, check out the South Beach Hotel , designed by Foster + Partners with interiors by Philippe Starck.  The PARKROYAL on Pickering offers the ultimate vertical garden experience to its guests.

Seto Inland Sea, Japan

Ribbon Chapel

(Ribbon Chapel; photo credit: The Architect’s Newspaper )

The Seto Inland Sea is the body of water that flows between three of the four main islands of Japan, Honshū, Shikoku, and Kyūshū, and the area has long been an active hub of trade and tourism. The local governments, businesses, and cultural institutions were the first to patronize Modernist architecture after World War II. The prefecture of Kagawa has long been investing in making the local towns along the sea architectural landmarks and has recently led the development of Naoshima, Teshima, and Inushima, turning the greater area into an influential center of contemporary art and architecture.

The Benesse Art Site Naoshima is a collection of museums all designed by one of Japan’s top starchitects, Tadao Ando. SANAA’s Teshima Art Museum, which blurs exterior/interior boundaries with its open air concept, is also a must-see, as is their cloud shaped Naoshima port terminal. Find a moment for reflection at Hiroshi Nakamura’s Ribbon Chapel . The region has no shortage of luxury hotels and eateries for relaxation and libation. The most unique stay experience is surely found at Guntû , a 19-room ryokan aboard a ship that floats atop the Seto Inland Sea.

El Cosmico

If Marfa is not yet on your radar, it’s high time you look up this art and design wonder located in the middle of the Texan dessert. The town was first founded as a water stop along the New Orleans Railroad and flourished as the support to the Marfa Army Airfield. However, when the airfield was closed in 1945, the town fell into decline. Things began to change for the better in the 1970’s when artist Donald Judd stumbled upon the town and immediately took an interest in the ghost-town feel of an abandoned relic. He set up his studio in Marfa and later established the The Chinati Foundation , which brought more minimalist artists to the town.

Design enthusiasts will want to visit the Judd Foundation, the AYN Foundation, and the Chinati Foundation for a thorough tour of the town’s artistic offering. Other design destinations include the Prada Marfa, which is an artistic installation by Elmgreen and Dragset, set up as a mock-store that serves as a gallery for Prada’s fall/winter 2005 collection. The Tiny Target is a newer take on the same idea. Be sure to have a meal at Marfa Burrito , or if you are there on a Friday night, owners Vicente and Ramona’s host a Friday night taco stand in the garden behind the restaurant. For slightly more sophisticated fare, try Cochineal . For the ultimate Marfa experience, stay at El Cosmico , a hotel comprised of a collection of luxury RVs and yurts.

To be the best interior designer you can be, it's important to give yourself the opportunity to take in new influences and recharge your creative spirit. Art and design is a constantly evolving field, and new attractions are springing up across the globe every day, providing endless opportunities for new inspiration. We will continue to monitor the international design scene to keep you informed of the latest developments and new destinations to put on your radar, so follow Design Manager on Instagram @designmanager for the latest tips on where and how to reinvigorate your interior design mind.

But choosing the best travel garment bag for your needs can be a challenge. There are a lot of options on the market, so we asked an expert about how to find the right one. According to Tumi creative director Victor Sanz, “Your garment bag should be sturdy, functional, and sleek. If you’re frequently traveling by plane, a garment bag that folds to fit carry-on requirements is essential.” He adds, “You want to find the size that will fit all your clothes without having to overfold them and will allow you to reach your destination in style.”

It’s also important to consider bonus features, like pockets and organizational compartments, and, as Sanz notes, “A crucial function is to ensure that you’re able to hang your garment bag when you arrive at your destination, so that you can prepare your outfits as easily as possible and to ensure that all your clothes are crisp.” Keeping all this in mind, we found the 12 best travel garment bags out there today. Once you start using one of these, you’re never going to go back.

MZ Wallace’s signature quilting isn’t limited to the brand’s totes, appearing here in garment bag form. The thin design is extremely lightweight, ideal for quick trips when you need to bring one to three outfits. There is even an exterior pocket for bonus storage.

Dimensions: 22" × 3" × 39"

Materials: Oxford, leather

What reviewers are saying: “I have been interested in a MZ Wallace garment bag for a while. It is perfect! Just right proportions and size. Thoughtful design and construction details.”

Tumi always delivers premium luggage that will last you over a decade, and this garment bag is no exception. Sanz says: “It’s foldable, with a sturdy handle for easy carrying, making it convenient and compact for every type of travel. I also love that it has several zipper pockets, so I can pack my toiletries and other travel essentials all in one bag. When I arrive at my destination, I hang it in the closet and I know that I will be ready to go.”

Dimensions: 15" x 22" x 6"

Materials: Ballistic nylon

What reviewers are saying: “This bag stores so much for a carry on. I was able to comfortably fit 2 suits and more for a destination wedding!”

This duffel has been receiving high praise ever since its release. A few of the reasons it’s so popular: The duffel is carry-on friendly, water-resistant, and has interior and exterior pockets. And those are only a few of its distinguishing features. Choose an original or compact size for the style that suits your needs.

Dimensions: 22" x 12" x 12"

Materials: Polyester

What reviewers are saying: “The Garment Duffel is a great purchase, especially for anyone in an industry that takes short frequent trips. I was actually able fit quite a bit more clothes than I had anticipated. Took the bag to work and my company bought 20 of them to give to customers. Great purchase.”

Longchamp’s iconic nylon and leather trim takes on a garment bag silhouette. The two-tone design exudes sophistication, with practical touches like a top carry handle, built-in hanger, and front zip pocket.

Dimensions: 23.25" x 41.25"

Materials: Nylon, leather

What reviewers are saying: “I bought this as a gift for my boyfriend who travels a lot and needed a nice garment bag particularly for his suits. This bag is perfect! It fits his suit as well as a few extra shirts. The fabric is an amazing, durable quality, and the leather details make this product look incredible.”

This garment bag is actually designed to fit inside of your carry-on, rather than serving as a stand-alone piece. The water-resistant exterior protects against spills, and exterior zip pockets hold small accessories. It gets the job done, while taking up the least possible amount of space.

Dimensions: 40" x 19"

What reviewers are saying: “I use this bag when I need to workout at work. I go from a suit to athleticwear in minutes.”

Looking for an affordable option that is available ASAP? Amazon’s garment bag holds up to three suits or dresses and boasts multiple zipper compartments.

Dimensions: 40" x 4" x 20.5"

What reviewers are saying: “I bought this bag in 2019 and it has held up incredibly well since then, performs all functions advertised at a great price value. I have taken it on many flights, buses and train rides and have never had an issue with fitting it in the overhead bin on both longer-haul flights and short budget-airline carriers.”

Hartmann’s garment bag adds contemporary touches to an otherwise traditional design. The result? A chic, useful travel accessory that will stand the test of time. The padded shoulder strap and multiple interior pockets enhance the convenience of this style.

Materials: Nylon

What reviewers are saying: “Hartmann was an anniversary gift from my work place, and I am still proud to own it 35 years later.”

Mark & Graham Commuter 2-in-1 Garment Bag

Another convertible duffel, but this time with a personalized touch. That’s right—Mark & Graham lets you monogram your duffel. With a plethora of zippered and snap interior and exterior pockets, this bag gets creative with its storage solutions.

Dimensions: 22" x 10" x 10"

This spinner-style garment bag makes navigating a chaotic airport easy. The ergonomic design has expandable capabilities, as well as various compartments, a hanger bracket, and a pocket for liquids.

Dimensions: 20.5" x 24" x 9.5"

What reviewers are saying: “It’s easy to maneuver and overall great quality and very neat design (many compartments and zippered areas).”

For golfers and non-golfers alike, Stitch makes a duffel that is water- and stain-resistant, and includes a hanger hook, shoulder strap, elastic shoe pockets, and webbed handles. You can even get it customized with your initials.

Dimensions: 22.5" x 11.5" x 12"

What reviewers are saying: “Love it! Fits into the airplane overhead bin, no trouble bringing it along as a carry-on bag. Very sturdy, zippers are tough enough. Shoulder strap is removable. My suit arrived in top shape using this garment bag. Highly recommended.”

Ralph Lauren Leather-Trim Hybrid Garment Duffel

The Very Best Things We Spotted at Milan Design Week 2024

From futuristic inflatables to topsy-turvy office furniture, here are just a few of the things that we’re obsessing over at design’s biggest party.

Delcourt Collection’s “Horses in My Dreams” Exhibition

a room with a couch and a table with a vase of flowers

One of my favorite things about coming to Europe for the furniture fairs is finding smaller scale work that’s perfect for apartment living. “Horses in My Dreams,” an exhibition of 15 new pieces from Delcourt Collection , stuck with me for offering the exact opposite. Visitors were greeted by a colossal cabinet that could, in a pinch, double as housing itself, and turned the corner to find an outsize pendant light hanging over a table occupying the square footage of a city-friendly terrace, all exquisitely hand-finished. An extensive range of fabrics is all done in-house as well and appeared on upholstered seating and a bed. My favorite was used on a series of folding screens that featured a pattern designed by founder Christophe Delcourt’s daughter, Iris. — Sean Santiago, deputy editor

Korean Craft at Rossana Orlandi

a hallway with a white carpet and a white rug

Curator Jooyeon Choi has created one of the most beautiful exhibitions at Milan Design Week, “Thoughts on Thickness,” focusing on Korean craft. The show is an exploration of materiality, from the resin wall sculptures of Yongkyoung Kim to Sekyung Lee’s surprising plates with elaborate designs made of human hair. A highlight is a pavilion devoted to tea, which features a wall-size folded paper landscape mural by Changwon Lee that cascades with tea leaves, infusing the room with their intoxicating scent. — Ingrid Abramovitch, executive editor

Allegra Hicks’s Metamorphosis Collection

a group of chairs with objects on top of them

Designer Allegra Hicks showed “Metamorphosis” at Nilufar Depot, an exhibition of six pieces that cleverly showcased her own crochet work by using it as a mold for cast-bronze lighting fixtures and tables. The idea was to connect what has historically been women’s work with the more masculine art of metalsmithing. While it’s a technique that can be seen in much of Hicks’s work, the sconces on view begged a second look. – S.S.

Ikea’s Pop-Up Dance Party

milan design week 2024

No surprise, the king of flatpack furniture knows how to throw a helluva pop-up. At Padiglione Visconti—a sprawling warehouse where sets and costumes for the Teatro alla Scala opera house are made—Ikea presented 1st, an installation that celebrates all the emotions that come with creating your first home. In addition to a labyrinth of vignettes celebrating Ikea’s latest launches (this fall, you can anticipate a collection of actually chic gaming furniture, plus updated versions of the Poäng chair and Klippon sofa), the venue featured a towering stack of scaffolding supporting a stage for discussions with various design luminaries (think Google’s Ivy Ross and Rossana Hu of the architect duo Neri&Hu). Come nightfall, however, the place transforms into a massive club with free performances from some of the hottest local artists in Milan, from hip-hop to Italo disco. Programming runs through Saturday, so if you’re still in town, pop on by and be prepared to get a little loose. —Anna Fixsen, deputy digital editor

Nifemi Marcus Bello’s Omi Iyo Collection

a blue rectangular object with a round top and a round top and what looks like a mound of salt at center

Designer and artist Nifemi Marcus-Bello has steadily been gaining attention for his sensitive, smart designs for domestic life, almost all of them made in his native Nigeria. For Milan Design Week, he brings back the poetic installation Omi Iyọ, which debuted during Miami Design Week last year and is now on view at the 5VIE space in Milan. Omi Iyọ , which came out of an encounter with an African refugee in Venice two years ago, is a living sculpture with a central shiplike form made of mirror-polished stainless steel. As viewers look on, locally sourced salt from Italy pours slowly from its center onto the platform below. Like a haunting hourglass of high design, it serves as a metaphor for the lives lost at sea in forced displacement, poignant in its first location in Miami and just as much so here in Milan. — Camille Okhio, senior design writer

Objects of Common Interest at Alcova

a large white dome with blue buckets in front of it

The ever active duo behind Objects of Common Interest , Eleni Petaloti and Leonidas Trampoukis are up to their necks in Milan-based design interventions this week. At Alcova, where they showed an outdoor inflatable fountain last year, their pavilion, or “garden house”—also inflatable—lends itself to the leisure of this year’s visitors. Like a bombolono split in half, it’s a much needed dose of levity and hilarity in what for many is the most hectic week of the year. If you’re in the mood for something more stable, there’s always the ceramics they designed with Bitossi Ceramiche, also at Alcova. And if you, like us, can’t get enough of these geniuses, they’ve installed an eggplant-hued room for retiring, Purple Nebula, inspired by celestial phenomena at Nilufar Depot that’s very much worth a stop in. —C.O.

Andromeda Collection by LSM Studio

a large white building with a roof

Unifor, part of the Molteni Group, is known for designing chic, elevated office furniture, but its latest collection is so elegant, it can easily be used in residential contexts as well. Designed by longtime collaborators LSM Studio, the line includes a series of small side tables, a sideboard, a long table, seating and more. Seamlessly blending aluminum, chrome, and glass, each piece beautifully reflects its surrounding environment—an exercise in seamlessly blending open space with elegant design. The cherry on top was the installation at the brand’s showroom, executed by Studio Klass, which, outside, sets each piece on a tilted, circular platform. It emulates the Andromeda Theatre in central Italy, where Klass staged and photographed the pieces for Unifor, further demonstrating the collection’s versatility and impact. — Helena Madden, market editor

WKND Lab’s Knotted Creations at Alcova

a room with a couch and statues

At Alcova, Seoul-based design duo Eunji Jun and Halin Lee of WKND Lab offered a literal twist on an ancient tradition: Korean knot-making, or maedeup. These elaborately-tied objects are traditionally gifted as good luck charms. In WKND Lab’s interpretation, however, these braided tokens have been reinterpreted as soft, beautifully complex wall sconces, accessories, and even furniture, all braided from puffy cloth ropes. Jun and Lee describe their work as “functional art with material-driven narratives”—and this was one story we were thrilled to experience. —A.F.

Foscarini’s Habitus Lighting

spazio monforte habitus

Italian lighting has a long history of combining technology with handmade craft. For an exquisite installation at the Milan showroom of Foscarini, artist and designer Andrea Anastasio teamed up with Amal, an India and Rome-based firm specializing in embroidery for haute couture, to create a small capsule collection that feels like an art show. Anastasio designed lighting that combines LED with beading made by skilled artisans in India. Some pieces combine glass beads, aluminum and LEDs in a series with echoes of artist Dan Flavin. Another group veils LEDs under strings of colorful beads with black centers for an effect reminiscent of an eclipse. Foscarini calls the grouping “experimental” (translation: not for sale), but here’s hoping the company will see the light and put them into production. —I.A.

Squash Collection by Faye Toogood

a room with a couch and chairs

Got curves? Poltrona Frau collaborated with British designer Faye Toogood for the first time this year, debuting a plump, playful collection at its sprawling showroom on Via Alessandro Manzoni. Offerings include an ottoman, side table, mirror, and rug, but it’s the voluptuous armchair that has us most excited. Its rounded silhouette feels almost like a contemporary take on Frau’s iconic Vanity Fair seat—further evidence of the brand’s continued relevance, even decades later. —H.M.

Limbo Accra at Prada Frames

a pyramid made of wood

True to its name, Limbo Accra is adept at inhabiting the in between. For its first presentation at Prada Frames at the Bagatti-Valsecchi Museum, the New York and Ghana-based design studio released an edition of 10 lacquered wood Euclid Stools. A meeting of East and West, past and present, the stool takes its name from Dante Alighieri’s Divine Comedy and acts as a symbol of the space a soul takes on its journey to the afterlife. It is transmorphic, appearing as an A-frame structure on one side, and on the other recalling the Savonarola chair, itself pregnant with meaning as the victim of the Inquisition it was named after. —C.O.

Gohar World at Alcova

a table with a white cloth and a white tablecloth with a white tablecloth and a window

Surrealist superstar Laila Gohar is not one for simplicity. Everything in her world is decorated and detailed, whether a show, apron, or tomato. At Alcova this year she has staged one of her labor-intensive installations – delicate snacks along with pieces from her and her sister Nadia’s homewares line Gohar World – organized under a tent of striped canvas. Like a contemporary iteration of Gustav III’s copper campaign tents at Haga, these edible sculptures and the enclosure that frames them, are for frivolities sake, and no less important for being for this brief moment.

Sam Chermayeff's collaboration with Maharam at Dropcity

a tent with chairs and a table

American, Berlin-based architect Sam Chermayeff ’s work is unfailingly experimental, often pushing what most of us think of as living comfortably, yet the pieces and projects he presents yearly can be described as nothing less than chic. This year he’s collaborated with Maharam on Tent Typologies: A Working Study at Dropcity – a series of enclosures that take the forms from circus tents, market stalls, umbrellas and ancient structures, simplifying and refining them until nearly unrecognizable. Under canopies of Maharam wool, polyurethane, and sheer weaves, visitors can contemplate what it has meant and could mean to take shelter.

Welcome to Hotel 850 SVB, a Member of Design Hotels™

Intimate, elegant, and timeless in west hollywood’s heart..

Inspired by Europe’s residential-style properties, where home comforts blend seamlessly with luxury, 850 SVB presents a new kind of LA experience. This is an intimate retreat, with old and new coming together to create an elegant, lived-in timelessness in West Hollywood. The building's bungalow facade dates to 1918, while a new addition makes the two structures feel as if they were always one. Well-known English interior designer, Rita Konig uses original artwork, hardwood floors, luxury linens, and marble bathrooms as a canvas upon which to create her “undone” yet chic look. The living room is perfect for relaxing or working. The al fresco roof deck awes with stunning city views.

It’s back by popular demand — Delta and American Express unveiled the next iteration of the limited-edition Boeing 747 Delta SkyMiles Reserve Card on the heels of the overwhelming response from Card Members when first launched in 2022 .

The new limited-edition cards are cloud-white in color and made from two Delta Boeing 747 aircraft 1 that were retired after more than 27 years of service and feature each plane’s history, including their first and last flights, tail number and number of miles flown.

The new limited-edition Delta SkyMiles Reserve Cards are cloud-white in color and made from two Delta Boeing 747 aircrafts that were retired after more than 27 years of service and feature each plane’s history, including their first and last flights, tail number and number of miles flown.

The card is available exclusively for new and existing Delta SkyMiles Reserve and Reserve Business Card Members from April 25 through June 5, 2024, while supplies last. The new design comes after recent enhancements made to the Delta SkyMiles American Express Cards to improve the travel experience and deliver everyday value to Members, both in the air and on the ground.

“At Delta, innovation and experience are at the core of everything we do,” said Prashant Sharma, V.P. of Loyalty at Delta Air Lines. “Each card carries the legacy of countless journeys and embodies the spirit of exploration that drives our customers and all of us at Delta. When combined with the recently upgraded benefits, these cards provide a nod to our storied past and symbolize the elevated experiences our customers can expect in their future travels.”

In 2022, Delta and American Express launched the first iteration of the limited-edition Boeing Delta 747 Card design, one of the most iconic airplanes in aviation history. The new design is made with 33% metal from a retired Delta Boeing 747 plane and has a white glossy finish, which is inspired by clouds.

American Express Reserve Card

“We’re bringing back one of our most popular Card designs ever with a new look honoring the ‘Queen of the Skies,’” said Jon Gantman, Senior Vice President and General Manager of Cobrand Product Management at American Express. “Given the strong response from customers with our first Card design, we wanted to find another exciting opportunity for aviation enthusiasts and Card Members to have a piece of aviation history in their wallets.”

The Delta SkyMiles Reserve and Reserve Business American Express Cards offer premium travel benefits for Delta loyalists, including an enhanced Companion Certificate each year after renewal 2 , an MQD Headstart that helps you get closer to Status, miles accelerators, access to exclusive reservations through Global Dining Access by Resy 3 , and more.

Two Maryland-native reality stars are set to headline the fourth annual Annapolis Pride Parade and Festival.

The event celebrates its fourth year on June 1, taking place from noon to 5 p.m. Unlike previous years, this year's parade will begin at City Dock, move up Main Street and end at Amos Garrett Boulevard and West Street. The festival will take place outside of the Maryland Hall for the Creative Arts and the Bates Athletic Complex.

Christian Siriano, an Annapolis-native and winner of "Project Runway" season four, will serve as the 2024 parade grand marshal. Additionally, Baltimore-born singer and current contestant on "The Voice," L. Rodgers, is scheduled to headline the entertainment during at festival.

Siriano is a superstar in the fashion industry and a local celebrity who attended Broadneck High School. L. Rodgers is described as a model in the LGBTQIA+ community who used music to navigate her journey coming out as a lesbian and as having autism.

This year's theme is "Anchored With Pride," which refers to the Chesapeake Bay and its importance to the Annapolis area. Attendees to the parade and festival can see entertainment, vendors and even a kid's zone that will feature face painting and art balloons. More than 10,00 people are expected to attend.

Annapolis Pride Inc. is also hosting ticketed events before and after the parade. The full entertainment lineup will be announced closer to June 1. For more information on the parade, festival and events, tap here .

A millennial Lyft driver who used the gig to explore all 50 states explains his strategies for maximizing earnings and tips

  • Kreskin J. Torres, a Lyft driver, has traveled across all 50 states, documenting his dining experiences.
  • Torres is working on a book, an app called Rideshare Foodies, and is organizing a national potluck.
  • He said gig driving is just temporary and has helped him achieve his larger goals.

Insider Today

Kreskin J. Torres, 35, has eaten his way through all 50 states — including Alaska and Hawaii. His ticket to doing so? Driving for Uber and Lyft .

The Army veteran and Baltimore native has documented his dining on his blog Rideshare Foodie . After seven years, he's learned the most profitable times of day to drive, the best locations to find riders in each city and the optimal strategies for maximizing tips .

"You just got to work smarter, not harder," Torres said. "From my experience, I've been in every state, so I know how every city works now."

At the same time, he's been able to pursue his foodie passions. Torres is now working on a book called "Taste of the States," his recommendations app called Rideshare Foodies, and planning a series of events to honor dishes from various states and their history.

While driving for ride-hailing services like Uber and Lyft can be a flexible way to earn money for people like Torres who have more than one hustle, it can also be a recipe for burnout. Among the dozens of drivers Business Insider has spoken with over the past few months, many are already dreaming of what's next — starting a business or finding new modes of employment .

And that's Torres' main career advice for those considering it. After all, he's not planning to do the job forever, as he hopes to transition away, though it helped him jump-start new paths for his future.

"Do not make this the end all be all," Torres said, noting how Uber and Lyft have threatened to pull out of Minneapolis. "When it started, it was advertised as a gig, a side hustle."

Traveling the country as a gig driver

As a veteran, he said this job has been relatively stress-free and helpful for not feeling lonely, a similar sentiment he's heard from veterans with PTSD.

"I enjoy meeting and connecting with different people and getting to see different places," Torres said.

He decided to spend his next few years on the road using driving to fund his adventures and to meet locals who could point him to the best restaurants and experiences.

"The great thing is you get to learn about different cities and how everything operates," Torres said.

Related stories

He moved to San Antonio , though he works mainly around the more-profitable Austin area, and has explored the South and Southeast.

While he doesn't make much money from his blog, he said driving has allowed him to try everything from Navajo tacos in Arizona to biscuits in chocolate gravy in Arkansas to huckleberry swirls in Montana. Driving has led him to some of his favorite restaurants like I693 Red Zone Grill in Jackson, Mississippi; Strawberry's BBQ in Holcomb, Missouri; and Rice & Roll by Xing Xing in Wichita.

Learning the most profitable places and times to drive

Torres noticed he would get more profitable rides driving around suburbs, airports, and sports stadiums, locations coveted by drivers as they get more tips and sometimes elevated fares.

He learned New Year's will always be profitable , though rides slow down around February before picking up in mid-March. It's led him to be more methodical about the types of rides to take, as well as planning when to save more of his earnings and when to splurge a little on food and travel.

"After seven years, I'm a lot more experienced. It depends on the time of the season, so I usually can do a lot more business in college towns," Torres said. "I would visit a city, see what they're known for, a little history behind it."

Torres was making enough to comfortably travel the country, though he's always been careful since he said passengers are sometimes confused by his out-of-state license plate. He also faced a permanent deactivation from Uber last year over a dispute over the color of his car.

He doesn't have a wife or kids, nor does he have an apartment, as he mainly lives out of his car to save money. He acknowledges that growing competition on the road and lower earnings could put a greater dent in savings for people with families or permanent residences.

Torres has transitioned to driving full-time for Lyft , and he typically is online for 12 hours a day but only actively drives five to six hours in between waiting around airports.

He said he's increasingly put himself in his passengers' shoes to determine the best places and times to drive — he likely won't put in the effort to drive during rain, and he's more likely to do later trips around concert venues or bars.

To continue supporting his travels, he said he sometimes does airport rides at 3 or 4 a.m., as well as rides between 6:30 a.m. and 10 a.m. during the morning rush. He also said being online around noon is fruitful for corporate workers, while 3 p.m. is right when schools let out. He usually tries not to drive around evening rush hours but sometimes resumes later at night.

He also devotes more time to driving between Wednesday and Sunday, when rides are more frequent, whether for "whiskey Wednesdays" or Friday afternoon happy hours. This is also when he can best network with passengers and hear their stories, as he said he occasionally gets to drive famous people.

Torres said drivers should consider this a short-term opportunity while working toward long-term goals. As he eases off the app, he has his eyes set on more international travel in the coming months. He's also investing more time in his food app, a local recommendation tool that functions like a Facebook group in which people ask questions about, for example, the best bartender in the area or where to go for particular dishes. It has launched on Android and set to be released on Apple by the summer.

"The most positivity that you can get out of it, do whatever you can and get the most out of it," Torres said. "The next few months will probably be my last time doing this because I'm focusing on other things, so I always had a plan for the things I was going to do."
