I promised myself that if/when my teenager came back from his EF Tours trip safe, sound and happy, I'd write them a review. A day before he left I stumbled upon the bad reviews and freaked out, so I hope I can offer a different opinion - one from a person who actually got to experience their trip. Before you go: I will say that our organizing teacher was incredibly thorough with informing us on what to expect. She told the kids about differences in plumbing, air conditioning (or lack thereof), that kids should expect to share rooms and sometimes beds (the latter did not happen), etc. When I read other reviews of EF trips, many of the bad reviews seemed like the people hadn't been given realistic expectations. Which brings me to... Expectations: My 13 year old eats public school cafeteria food and boxed mac and cheese. A gourmand he's not. We were not expecting 5 star meals and restaurants for him on this trip. He also attends sleepaway camp in a cabin with 7 other teenaged boys and sleeps on a sleeping bag thrown over an old mattress. We were not expecting the Four Seasons. Finances: We did the payment plan and the insurance. We were clear on if we canceled after a certain date we'd get our money back minus the $500. We understand that during the pandemic, businesses - especially those based on things as uncertain as travel - need to build in some cushion like this. Flights: My son's flight from the US to London was on time and without a hitch. Flight from Paris to Rome was delayed. Not sure why. It was raining a lot, it may have been weather. Flight from Rome back to US was also delayed by several hours. While inconvenient, I don't think this was within the power of EFT to change. Hotels: Each hotel was, in the opinion of my son, nicer than the last. Each one was less than 30 minutes outside of the city center. No complaints from him. Friendly staff, good food, clean beds and towels. The tours: He hit the Tower Bridge, London Museum, Buckingham Palace, saw Wicked, the Lourve, Eiffel Tower, Versailles, the Vatican, the Colosseum. They tried to cram so much in that he only got 4 hours of sleep one night (10 pm showing of Wicked and then an early Chunnel ride the next morning) and his Lourve tour guide was rusty after covid and forgot some protocol so managed to waste 40 minutes of their day there. He says he would have liked a little less structured tour time - sometimes they were near running to make sure they did their jam packed agenda in - and a little more time to just slow down and enjoy. The food: I saw a photo of every meal along with a tag of what restaurant they were at, and everything looked great! My son reported that he tried new foods and genuinely enjoyed all of it. Overall this was an incredible experience for my kid. He hasn't stopped gushing about it. We would absolutely do it again.

BEWARE!! DO NOT BOOK WITH EF TOURS! They can't be trusted to follow through with what they say. They will promise you good flights and hotels until they get your money and then change it without notifying you. UNTRUSTWORTHY! Stay away unless you want a cheaper, inferior flight and hotel. Bait and switch for services proposed and then offered an inferior option! We felt scammed!

This company is a complete scam. A money grab. They along with their team canceled the tour and refuses to refund the full amount. They give gifts and perks to the teachers who organize these trips to get them to sign up students then end up stealing a portion of the mine with no trip. Even though I purchased travel insurance through them! Unbelievable

Photo of InThe D.

Absolutely DO NOT trust this company with your child's well being. They only care about their bottom line and not your child's safety, health, or well being. They only respond when pressured (through BBB (check their ratings)) and customer service will refuse to help you. Be warned. Be wary. Look elsewhere for a company you can trust to take care of your most important asset.

I'm a teacher who has traveled 3 times with EF tours. I have to say, my experience has been amazing. I know most people who have good trips don't write reviews, which is why you see the reviews that you see here. Thousands and thousands of kids travel on these tours, and most of the experiences (like the ones my students have had) are stellar- life changing- fun, educational, wonderful experiences. I sympathize with the reviewers who have written here, but their experiences are not common. We have had to deal with customer service, and when I've dealt with them, they've been awesome. Did I always get what I wanted? No- because some times I was pushing for something that an airline (for example) would not allow- like wanting to upgrade seats from economy to premium economy on Air Canada- but it wasn't EF's fault I could not do that, and they definitely tried to help. Just to show you how helpful customer service has been for us, I'll give you one extreme example- I had set up a tour with mandatory trip protection. After a student signed up, she balked at that cost of the insurance- and I thought I would have to reimburse her out of my own personal money, but our local person with EF helped me take the charge off. THEN, about 2 months before the trip, the students wanted the protection back on- OMG, I was sure that would never be allowed, but EF helped me get that back on, AND they didn't even put on an extra charge! Is that wonderful, or what? I traveled on the AP England trip with my students- it was magical. My AP students and parents who came along were delighted- we saw more than I would have thought was humanly possible and it was a tremendous deal- considering almost everything, except lunch, and an extra play we decided to attend, was covered. The next year we saw Europe (Germany, Italy, Austria and Swtizerland)- again, we saw SO much. It was amazing. Again our tour guide was superb, They're so knowledgeable. Our only issue was that another teacher on the trip was a complete jerk, but let's face it, that's not EF's fault. We saw wonderful things, and we had great experiences, and my students have a fabulous time. Many of my students chose to take another trip with us- and that always makes me feel that I and EF tours are doing something right. Because students can be the harshest critics. Our trip this summer was to Japan. We had another magnificent tour guide- and wow, did we see a lot. I still can't believe how much we did. Tokyo, Kyoto, Nara, Hiroshima (with a ferry ride to a shrine), an onsen in the middle of the wilderness around Mt. Fuji, Lake Ashi (with a cruise), Owakudani (with a gondola ride)- and all of this included! My students spent very little on anything except lunches and souvenirs- and they got a lot of souvenirs! Knock on wood, but we've never had a problem on a tour. I've had kids need to drop out- for medical reasons, financial reasons, and because of an internship opportunity, and while they lost their deposit, there was never any other problem. I recommend EF tours to you without reservation- though, of course, it is always good to keep a record of what you have agreed to with a company, so that is just good common sense. I know other teachers who have traveled with other companies- EF is the biggest, with the most resources, and the best support network if you have a problem. They would be best placed to help you if, God forbid, you did have a problem. So, while I sympathize with the people complaining here, my experience, and the experience of the many people I know who've traveled with EF is very, very good. Happy travels!

Finally got through to a live person today and canceled our entire tour. While it cost us 50% or almost 4,000 dollars to cancel I believe with the experience we have had to date, it is worth the penalty to not travel with this poor excuse of a travel company.

Well after more than a year we canceled Greece and instead booked a Scotland. This is set but we inquired about upgrading to business class. Sally sent me the info several months ago and asked me to call or e mail them our intent. I emailed and tried to call. Unfortunately, after more than 1 hour on hold, I gave up. Today I received an e mail from Sally asking if I still wanted to upgrade. Again I replied to the email, yes. I the. Again tried to phone to pay for the upgrade less a credit we have on account (yes the previous extension credit). According to the queue info I was 26 in line. The sad news is after an hour of being on hold, I was only at number 20! This is a very poorly run business that makes us extremely uneasy about the quality of the tour we will experience once we are actually on it. Again, I would avoid this tour company and look for one with a much better customer service approach

DO NOT USE EF TOURS! As with many of the other past customers have stated here, this company is horrible. The facts: We originally booked a Trip to Greece in April (prior to Covid 19). We wanted to add an extension but when I called, I was told they are not offering an extension for that date. However, they also told me that based on the limited current sign ups for our dates, it looks like they will have to cancel and rebook us anyway. Turned out they had to do this. Our revised trip was now May and the good news is this one offered the extension. We paid the extra $2,000.00+ for this add on. Now with the virus, I called last week to reschedule. The agent was very nice and found a rebooking for October. Unfortunately, she said it does not offer the extension option. Also, while they said they would rebook at no additional cost, she told me the tour was $300.00 more for this date! I did not argue but asked about getting a refund (less the $300), for the extension I paid for. She said that I would receive a credit back to my Visa card for $1,800.00 All was right in the world. However, after a week without seeing the credit and no response except for our new itinerary showing paid in full but no mention of the credit, I called to inquire. I was then told that there is no refund and per policy, they would apply this in the form of a travel voucher or upgrades or find a tour sometime in the future that included the extension (after 3 rescheduled dates already!). I tried to explain that this was not a typical situation. Simply put; 1. I was told on the phone by another agent I would get a refund less the additional cost for the main trip. Not a travel voucher. 2. I was not offered other dates with the optional extension 3. EF was not offering the extension, therefore it is EF and not me who cancelled this part of the tour. 4. My wife has already booked this vacation date for the third time with her employer who, up until now has been quite understanding but, changing for a third time might not be so kind. When I asked to speak to a manager, she informed me even if I could, they would tell me the policy stands. I still requested this to which she said she would pass it on and I should be receiving a call in 3 business days. Given the unprecedented situation affecting all of us, I would think a company in the travel industry would be bending over backwards to help their customers resolve issues in a more flexible manner other than just reciting "THE POLICY IS......" I will repost after/if I hear from Management.

The absolute worst travel agency I've ever come across! 3 hours on hold and a $500 cancellation fee due to Covid, really?!

Photo of J C.

It feels like EF is seeking to profit from the Covid-19 pandemic by not issuing refunds to parents and students for cancelling trips even when travelers bought insurance. EF owes a full refund to travelers who cannot use the travel voucher. They need to rectify their poor handling of this "Covid-19 no-full-refund" situation for hard-working families, some of whom are struggling to make ends meet during the pandemic. Our EF travel consultant was the one to suggest that instead of birthday presents, kids ask their grandparents for a "donation" to their travel account, but EF is now keeping those "birthday presents." It is a poor, disgusting practice to keep the money these kids and their families worked so hard for. A 12-year-old traveler in my school saved up her 4-H winnings for over a year-and-a-half to be able to take this tour and EF is now keeping those 4-H winnings. It seems wholly unacceptable and disheartening for EF Tours to profit by taking advantage of school-aged students and their families when our country is experiencing such hardship, especially in that we know some businesses are receiving CARE act funding. Is EF keeping this "birthday money" but still receiving a government pay-out?!? This seems fraudulent. As a former EF Group Leader, I would NEVER travel with this company again and would suggest that anyone currently considering an EF tour re-consider.

Photo of Alice M.

We were told on 9/1 our refund of $2665 would be issued in 2-3 weeks. When this did not happen I filed a dispute with my bank for the last 3 payments to pay bills. Because I filed a dispute for a total of $876 they are holding the remaining $1789 hostage for another 45 days for the investigation and then tacked another 4-6 weeks on top of that for the refund. I have filed a BBB, FTC and Attorney General complaint on this HORRIBLE company. Buyer BEWARE and do not expect your refunds to come as fast as they left your accounts if EVER! I am a single mother and need this $ on 10/4 as promised!

Photo of Sean C.

I am posting this for my daughter who is 17. She is a senior in high school and had booked a trip with her school through EF Educational Tours. With Covid-19, the trip has been canceled but they will not refund all of her money. They have rescheduled the trip to next year but she will be in college and there is no way to know if she will be able to go or if she will want to. They have offered her vouchers for other travel with their company or a partial refund. This is disappointing considering everything that is going on right now. This is a 17 year old who is missing her senior year of high school, her prom, her graduation and now this trip and they can't do the right thing and give her all of her money back. She has worked and paid all of this herself and its not right. All we want is a full refund of her money.
