Travis Barker, Mark Hoppus, and Tom DeLonge of Blink-182

Last week, Billboard revealed its year-end Boxscore charts , ranking the top tours, venues, and promoters of 2023. That coverage included analysis of the new wave of genre diverse artists crashing stadium stages, and in turn, our charts. This week, we are breaking down the year’s biggest tours, genre by genre . Today, we continue with rock.

Rock music has been at the center of the touring industry for decades, with legendary acts like The Rolling Stones , U2 , and the Eagles controlling stadium calendars and delivering record-breaking grosses. That is still the case, as rock is responsible for more entries in the all-genre top 10, 20, 40 and 100 than any other genre.

But at 32.4% of all top 100 tours’ grosses, rock takes a dramatic hit from last year’s 42.5% figure. Combined with pop, the two central genres have lost a third of their total market share since the pandemic, as pockets of Latin and K-pop acts take up prime Boxscore real estate. And as rock accounts for many of the oldest artists in the top 100, with Latin and K-pop bringing up the chart’s youngest names, the future of rock bands as touring titans is blurrier than it was 5-10 years ago.

But with a new round of legacy tours from ‘90s and ‘00s bands, plus steady arena grosses from 21st century acts like Arctic Monkeys, Greta Van Fleet and Imagine Dragons, there is still plenty of juice for the coming years.

Scroll to check out the top 10 highest-grossing tours by rock artists, with such acts qualifying due to recent performance on Billboard ’s Top Rock Albums and/or Hot Rock Songs charts. Rankings are determined according to figures reported to Billboard Boxscore. All reported shows worldwide between Nov. 1, 2022 – Sept. 30, 2023 are eligible.

Page McConnell, Trey Anastasio, and Jon Fishman of Phish

$76.8M / 597K tickets / 41 shows

All-Genre Top 100 Rank: 24

Phish is among the most consistent touring acts, regardless of genre. From its annual destination event in Mexico to its reliable runs of shows at Madison Square Garden, the jam-band legends continue to one-up themselves, after winding up at No. 31 on last year’s all-genre ranking.

Red Hot Chili Peppers

Flea and Anthony Kiedis of Red Hot Chili Peppers

$77.2M / 657K tickets / 18 shows

All-Genre Top 100 Rank: 23

Red Hot Chili Peppers repeat in the year-end rock breakdown with shows in Asia, Europe and North America. Still, the band’s $77.2 million total doesn’t include the $48.2 million from its co-headline shows with Post Malone in Australia.

Matthew Bellamy of Muse

$92.7M / 1M tickets / 45 shows

All-Genre Top 100 Rank: 20

Muse makes its first appearance among the year-end top 10 rock tours since 2013, when the glam-rock band earned $43.2 million while on The 2nd Law World Tour. The European leg did the heaviest lifting, with nine of the top 10 grosses of the year.

Mark Hoppus from Blink-182

$95.7M / 692K tickets / 45 shows

All-Genre Top 100 Rank: 19

Blink is back with the biggest tour of its career. The original trio of Mark Hoppus, Tom DeLonge and Travis Barker reunited for 45 sold-out shows in North America and Europe. Things came to a head with two nights at Los Angeles’ BMO Stadium, where blink-182 grossed $8.8 million and sold 43,600 tickets.

Guns N' Roses

Axl Rose and Slash of Guns N' Roses

$96.2M / 888K tickets / 31 shows

All-Genre Top 100 Rank: 18

Guns N’ Roses logs a second year between $90-100 million after being No. 8 on 2022’s genre Boxscore breakout. More shows after the tracking period’s cutoff puts the rock icons on tap for the ’24 ranking with $19.7 million already in the bank.

Dead & Company

Dead and Company

$114.7M / 845K tickets / 28 shows

All-Genre Top 100 Rank: 15

Dead & Company played its farewell tour between May 19 and July 16, yielding its first $100 million summer since launching as a touring unit in 2015. The peak was a three-night run at San Francisco’s Oracle Park to end the tour, earning $20.4 million from 118,000 tickets sold.

James Hetfield, Robert Trujillo, Lars Ulrich, and Kirk Hammett of Metallica

$125.8M / 1.2M tickets / 19 shows

All-Genre Top 100 Rank: 14

Metallica grossed more than $10 million in seven markets between Europe and North America, doubling up in Montreal, Paris and more. The M72 World Tour continues with scheduled dates through Sept. 29, 2024.

Depeche Mode

Martin Gore and Dave Gahan of Depeche Mode

$175.2M / 1.8M tickets / 47 shows

All-Genre Top 100 Rank: No. 9

The first of three rock acts in the all-genre top 10, Depeche Mode scores the biggest year of its touring career, blowing past 2017’s $123.5 million. Three shows at Mexico City’s Foro Sol on Sept. 21, 23 and 25 delivered the band’s biggest gross ever, at $15.4 million from 195,000 tickets sold.

Elton John

$210M / 1.3M tickets / 65 shows

All-Genre Top 100 Rank: No. 7

Elton John notches a fifth year on the year-end Boxscore recap with the Farewell Yellow Brick Road Tour, having topped the abridged 2020 report. After all was said and done, set a new record as the highest-grossing tour in Boxscore history, regardless of genre. Over 329 shows, the trek earned $939.1 million and sold six million tickets.

Jonny Buckland, Chris Martin, Will Champion and Guy Berryman of Coldplay

$342.5M / 3.2M tickets / 55 shows

All-Genre Top 100 Rank: No. 2

Switching places with John from last year, Coldplay takes top honors as the highest-grossing rock act of 2023. The band’s spread covers shows in North and South America, as well as Europe, with dates in Asia and Australia in the 2024 tracking window. After kicking off in 2022, the Music of the Spheres Tour has brought in $664.5 million and sold 6.7 million tickets.

Taylor Swift; Beyoncé; Drake

Dozens of artists hit the road during 2023 to bring their music to sold-out venues across the globe.

The first half of the year started off strong with artists and bands like Harry Styles, Journey, Carrie Underwood, SZA, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Reba McEntire, Janet Jackson, Lizzo, Blink-182, Charlie Puth, Billy Idol, Wiz Khalifa, Bebe Rexha and Black Pink heading out on their headlining tours.

Some artists had such sought-after tickets for their tours, including Taylor Swift and Beyoncé, that it led to sites, such as Ticketmaster, completely crashing when tickets dropped.

Many summer nights were also filled with good tunes this year as artists including Alicia Keys, Post Malone, Paramore, Chris Stapleton, Boygenius, Lionel Richie, Melissa Etheridge and Maggie Rogers set out on tours during the warmer months.

Concert tours are not only an opportunity for artists to promote their latest albums or to highlight their entire music catalogs, but it’s also a chance for their fans to come together to celebrate the music and musicians that they look up to and love. Those attending shows for artists such as Swift, Beyoncé and Styles often dress to impress, going all out for their outfits. Beyoncé even asked her fans to specifically come to her Virgo season concerts for her Renaissance World Tour decked out in silver and chrome, to celebrate her astrological sign. Swifties, inspired by the lyric “Make the friendship bracelets, take the moment and taste it …” from her song “You’re on Your Own, Kid,” made themed bracelets to trade and hand out to other fans at each of the stops on her Eras Tour.

The performers often praise their fans for all their love and support, like Swift writing on social media in July after her stops in Seattle, Washington, “Thank you for everything. All the cheering, screaming, jumping, dancing, singing at the top of your lungs.”

But if you missed the opportunity to see your favorite artists earlier this year, don’t worry, because The Hollywood Reporter has compiled a list of some of the most anticipated concert tours happening this fall, below.

Cardi B (the stage name of Belcalis Marlenis Almánzar Cephus) first gained fame on Vine and Instagram when several of her videos went viral. In 2015, she was cast in the sixth season of the hit VH1 reality series Love & Hip Hop: New York.

The Bronx native quickly won fans over with her vibrant personality, tick accent, and snappy one-liners. Two seasons and two mixtapes later, Cardi B announced her departure from the show to focus on her music career.

In February 2017, just two months after her exit from Love & Hip Hop, Cardi B signed with Atlantic Records at just 25 years. Her debut single, “Bodak Yellow” was released in June that year. The song was an instant success, catapulting Cardi B to worldwide fame.

Infatuated with the rapper’s unapologetic style, rapid flow, and thick New York-Dominican accent, listeners quickly turned into fans. After topping the Billboard 100 chart for three weeks in a row, Cardi B became the second rapper to reach number one as a solo artist. The music video for “Bodak Yellow” was just as big of a hit. When it dropped on YouTube, it became the fastest solo female rap song to reach 1 billion views on the platform.

Cardi B’s first studio album, Invasion of Privacy, dropped in 2018 to universal acclaim. The 13-song tracklist included collabs with Migos, Chance the Rapper, Bad Bunny, J Balvin, Kehlani, 21 Savage, YG, and SZA. The album entered the U.S. charts at number one and became Apple Music’s most-streamed album for a female artist in a single week. By refusing to soften herself as a new female artist, Cardi B redefined what it meant to break through in the industry.

The album went on to produce five singles, including “I Like It,” which also reached number one on the charts. Both Rolling Stone and Time magazine named Invasion of Privacy the best album of 2018. This phenomenal success earned Cardi B the titles of “Reigning Queen of Hip Hop” and “Queen of Rap” by multiple music publications.

Cardi B’s rapid rise to success reached a climax during a 2018 appearance on Saturday Night Live. The rapper had previously revealed to fans that she had wed her fiancé, Offset, in a secret ceremony the year before. While performing “Be Careful” live on the show, Cardi B revealed she was pregnant with their first child. The announcement broke the internet. Her baby daughter Kulture has since become an icon in her own right. She has captured the hearts of 3 million+ Instagram followers by featuring in several of her mom’s social media posts.

After welcoming her baby into the world, Cardi B’s career showed no signs of slowing down. At the end of 2018, she made history as the first female rapper to appear on the cover of Vogue. In early 2019, she won her first Grammy Award for Best Rap Album. For only the second time in 25 years, Thierry Mugler opened its archives to dress her for the event. Cardi B’s invite to the 2019 Met Gala confirmed her status as a budding fashion icon, and the very next year, she was recruited by Balenciaga to be the face of their winter campaign.

Cardi B’s star has only continued to rise. She made her film debut in the star-studded 2019 hit Hustlers, and she returned to TV as a judge on the Netflix competition series Rhythm + Flow. She has since also joined the Fast & Furious franchise, starring in F9 and the upcoming Fast X.

Toward the end of 2020, Cardi B teamed up with Megan Thee Stallion on the single, “WAP.” The song debuted at the top of the Billboard Hot 100 chart, making it Cardi B’s fourth number-one single. On YouTube, the song broke the record for the biggest debut for an all-female collaboration. Praised for its sex-positivity, the song also received critical acclaim.

In 2021, Cardi B welcomed her second child, a son named Wave. The same year, “Bodak Yellow,” was certified Diamond by the RIAA, cementing her icon status.

Today, Cardi B is the highest-certified female rapper of all time. Her second studio album is currently in the works.

Live reviews

Syracuse 9/7/2019

Overall a complete disappointment, the first opener had no sound support, the second was probably the most engaging and professional.

We waited from 9 PM until 10 PM for Cardi B. with nothing going on. People were more amped up when they played Lizzo as compared to any moment during the entire concert.

Cardi cam out had no clue where she was. You know, its NY so we all must be from one of the 5 boroughs or LI. Because no there is no other part of NY that exists. Almost walked into two pyrotechnics, literally though she was going to catch on fire.

sang 45-second snippets of songs in between walking around (NOT DANCING AROUND) and speaking incoherently and twerking or otherwise just throwing her leg up on a bar to show the 95% woman audience her crotch.

I spent more time staring at her crotch than listening to her do anything. She needs rehab and a new manager.

Started at 10pm she showed up at 3:30am and performed 2 songs all of 15mins. It wasn't an enjoyable experience in heels for 5.5 hours just to hear 3 Dj's play the same songs all night. $100 ticket at the door for a friend last minute was not even worth it. It should've been labeled a Club appearance. Not a show. Wack. Then she had so many people on the stage you could barely see her. Even though I was early to secure a front close picture, I waited for an obstructed view! Awful.

Waited there for HOURS after she was supposed to have been there and she finally showed up with some lame excuse about a fight with her boyfriend. DJ sucked before, was so tempted to leave. She played about 3 songs and left. What a bitch, clearly doesn't care about her fans and that we paid money.

Earlier this week, Fantasia appeared at CinemaCon in support of the press run for The Color Purple , the Warner Bros. musical adaptation of the Pulitzer Prize-winning 1982 novel. She reprises her award-winning role as Celie for the production directed Blitz Bazawule.

The Color Purple is set to debut on Dec. 25, Christmas Day.

In music-related news, Fantasia’s fourth album, Side Effects of You , celebrated its 10th anniversary this month.

Harmony Samuels, who co-wrote and produced all but one track on the album, spoke exclusively to Rated R&B about the creation of the Grammy-nominated release.

“It was a magical moment in that period of time of us working. It was even magical when it came out because I watched someone who, behind closed doors, was met by defeat, met by criticism, met by blame, her trauma. And by the time we got through it, she was glorious. She was righteous. She was victorious. She was blessed. And then she rode off into the night on a white horse,” Samuels said of how he views Side Effects of You  a decade later.

Fantasia hasn’t released a proper full-length album since 2019’s Sketchbook . The album, named one of Rated R&B’s 30 Best R&B Albums of 2019 , included the hit single “ Enough ” and “ PTSD ” featuring T-Pain.

A Conversation with Austin Killips About Her Record-Setting Tour Divide Ride and Upcoming Colorado Trail Attempt

A Conversation with Austin Killips About Her Record-Setting Tour Divide Ride and Upcoming Colorado Trail Attempt

By: Spencer Harding & Austin Killips September 6, 2024

Today, we have a conversation with the one and only Austin Killips . This year, she set a new overall record for the Arizona Trail and now a new women’s record for the Tour Divide. Spencer got the chance to ask Austin some questions as she prepared for the Colorado Trail to round out her Triple Crown. See what Austin had to reflect on and look forward to below…

First off, how did it feel to have to abandon your first attempt at the TDR in Butte?

I cried for about 10 miles as I pedaled back to Butte. It was a pretty all-consuming feeling of sadness and embarrassment. The thing I kept uttering as I called loved ones and former coach Adam Myerson to brainstorm mid-crisis was, “I just want my career back”. I concocted this whole Triple Crown project as a way to rebuild after the UCI debacle in 2023 ended my multi-year long project to earn a spot on the Women’s World Tour and turned me into a sort of toxic asset on the marketplace. I want/ed to accomplish something notable and undeniable to re-stake my claim and relevance and in the moment, as silly and shortsighted as it sounds, I felt like I had somehow undone all the progress I’d made towards that goal.

Like so many other women in professional cycling I’ve experienced so much precarity while chasing this dream. I’m not a great content creator and haven’t yet secured the financial support to make the short films about cycling that I’ve been plugging away at with some collaborators this past year. Results are what I’ve staked a lot of my value as an athlete on and that can make some mistakes and failures feel more damaging than they actually are.

Looking back, I’m glad it happened as I was riding so much better on my second run. It’s important to experience failure as an athlete. It’s a necessary check on our hubris and an occasion where the veil and filter disappears and you learn what your desires really are. My experience in the moment affirmed that when push comes to shove I’m absolutely all in on this pursuit and project. That felt good, I’d have been worried if my immediate thought wasn’t to go back and try again.

$b tour 2023

How did you manage to get back to the start and reset for another attempt?

When I landed in Calgary for my first run, an incredibly kind soul, Patrick, reached out to ask if I needed any help or support while I was in town. I scooted out of town quickly and didn’t get the chance to take him up but when things went south and I found myself trapped in Butte he followed up and made the incredibly generous offer to rescue and shuttle me back to Canada.

Like any proper guardian angel, Patrick rolled up to Butte the following afternoon and we scooted back up north together. One could argue that you shouldn’t take rides from strangers willing to drive cross country to pick you up but I was in a bind. In my quest to not let 2023 corrode my soul, I have been intentional about embracing every chance to see the kindness and shared humanity of others.

I’m incredibly grateful for Patrick and will cherish our lil’ roadtrip forever. It was a wonderful and unexpected chance to meet someone new and chat about movies and bikes after a few lonely days on the trail. The kindness and generosity of strangers have pulled me through some really hard times over the last year and I hope that I continue to pay that forward in word and deed.

How did the now-seasonal wildfire smoke affect your ride?

The wildfire smoke dominated the landscape from Banff to Colorado. Jasper [Canada] was under evacuation orders and being leveled as I rolled out. A fire outside of Fernie produced smoke so heavy it blotted out the sun as I climbed that stupid Koko Claims section. Montana was a thick haze from start to finish with a particularly nasty fire raging as I crested the climb out of Wise River. The Tetons were nearly invisible due to smoke. And just when I thought I had finally escaped the horror show, in Wamsutter I got word that a brush fire in Rawlins had jumped across the expressway, forcing the DOT to close I-70 down. The AQI was much better through Colorado but it still wasn’t until maybe Breckenridge that the dominant smell in the air wasn’t smoke.

I thought a lot about wildfire smoke derailing Lael’s last attempt at breaking Mike Hall’s record and the growing number of routes that are basically impossible to set new times on due to wildfire detours. Ultra-racing is obviously the smallest concern and casualty when it comes to wildfires, but when you’re pedaling all day it tends to linger in your mind. It’s hard not to wonder what the landscape of ultra-racing in this region looks like in the coming years. I have to imagine that the time windows to ride a lot of routes are only going to shrink in the coming years.

I remember being on the phone in Yellowstone quipping about how I was unsure if I was sick or hurting from the smoke and the person I was talking to looked up the AQI and got genuinely concerned about being outside. It was definitely an impediment to my performance that I wasn’t fully braced for. I was popping throat lozenges, covering my face whenever possible, and eager to get inside each night so I could sit in a shower and try to soothe my lungs. Future prep for wildfire season should probably include a period of “smoke acclimatization” where I rip darts on climbs and hit a vape when I’m going too fast for them to stay lit.

Performance stuff aside, the real impact was a sense of existential dread. I’ve spent a lot of time out west over the last four years and seen this shared sense of trauma and anxiety around wildfires that people live with out here, but I don’t think I truly understood it. Having now traversed well over a thousand miles, an international border, and multiple states with near-constant wildfires looming I’m starting to understand what it must feel like to have engine backfires and chains rattling on the ground produce a trauma response.

The climate is collapsing around us. Every year an unimaginable amount of lives are upended due to fires. Cities burn to the ground and entire ecosystems get destroyed. The thing about smoke is that you often don’t know where it’s coming from. It just acts as this constant reminder that something is awry. You spend your time in it acutely aware that someone somewhere is risking life and limb to put it out (likely for pennies on the dollar if they’re incarcerated and working as a firefighter in California) while someone else is potentially wondering if their home will still be standing before it gets put out. It’s one big horror show being aggressively stoked by people who choose to recreate on these lands in a reckless manner with little regard for others.

How does it feel to have the only pair of Zipp Motos that will fit a Slime tube with a Schrader valve?

I take pride in a rig that’s #builtnotbought and think I did an excellent job of converting my Wolf Tooth quick link tool into a reamer. If anyone is interested in this mod, I expect my schedule to open up in the coming months and will happily do irrevocable damage to your rims in service of making them Slime tube compatible.

It would be nice if they were still capable of being set up tubeless, but alas the tubeless Schrader valves seem to drop right through the hole I bored out.

After your AZT record, you wrote an ode to your support network in contrast to “self-supported” endurance racing. Has the TDR affected your thoughts on this aspect of ultra racing?

I couldn’t have done this ITT without my ever-expanding network of bike homies. I remain steadfast in my belief that the way people talk about self-support is as much about mythmaking and roleplaying as it is about maintaining a level playing field.

Kyle Messier and Sarah Hornby put me up not once but twice in Canmore as I geared up for my attempts. I’m still using bags that you [Spencer Harding] gave me for the AZT. A straight-up guardian angel (Patrick Dornian) rescued me from Butte. So much of my planning and prep was possible thanks to the people who’ve dedicated time to sharing knowledge and resources about this route. I definitely felt lonely out there on the trail at times and had hard moments where no one was around to help me (or I guess document and by proxy help me emotionally), but I still don’t care for the way this sport seems to frame self-support. When I’m up a creek I don’t feel alone and scared, I think of the people who believe in me and how special it is to embrace these challenges thanks to their support. In those moments, even when I’m alone in the woods trudging through some bullshit CDT section that no one would ride for fun, I think about the circumstances that led me there and I feel held.

$b tour 2023

What gear failed and what gear held up in your setup?

  • Well, I ripped the Revelate drybag you gave me on my first run, sewed it together, and then ripped it in another sport.
  • I broke the bite valve for my bladder which provided a refreshing steady drip of water on my legs during the day and then made me very cold while pedaling in the wee hours of the morning.
  • At some point I ripped the entire back panel of my beloved $25 extra-small hydration vest that I got at a gear consignment store
  • My dropper post is absolutely fried
  • Many tubes failed but the Slime tube did last the longest (Cuba to ~70 or so miles out of Silver City)
  • My pump broke but it served faithfully until the end
  • Chain exploded outside of Kremmling
  • My Velocio jersey was barely held together by a few threads

Things that worked well include but are not limited to:

  • The bags my friend Cole Sewed for me
  • My SRAM transmission derailleur that really does seem to be bulletproof
  • An old Fizik Gobi saddle
  • The Outbound Lighting Hangover and Detour have proved to be incredibly reliable.

For a video tour of the gear post TDR check out her video .

$b tour 2023

What did you listen to while you ride?

I was on a steady diet of basically two distinct aural experiences. A medley of Hardcore, Gabber, Breakcore, Jungle, and House sets (shouts out to Danny L. Harle and Petal Supply among many others) and the Boonta Vista podcast. Both were strategically deployed to meet either my need to not be lonely and or scared in the dark or my need to go stupid fast.

I think I spent the last 10 hours listening to a non-stop stream of sets above 165 bpm.

What records are you working toward, and where do you currently stand against them?

It would be cool to set the overall fastest Bikepacking Triple Crown time but doing so would require an FKT pace on the Colorado Trail. I’ve heard that doing so requires a willingness to die which is not something I necessarily lack but we’ll see how my legs are after the Divide.

Other than that, I don’t really know. Everything has an asterisk and even chasing Jay’s time is silly because it was set on much different *cough* easier *cough* courses. I am optimistic that I will set a rather notable overall Triple Crown time. It will have some sort of asterisk because I didn’t do the grand departs but I think these efforts speak for themselves at the end of the day and that’s all I really care about.

$b tour 2023

If you could have one company sponsor your efforts who would it be?

Slime, please return my hundreds of calls and emails.

Because I have so many gaps in my sponsor list at the moment I haven’t dedicated much time to thinking about the holy grail company to have sponsoring my program. I guess I’d say if your company doesn’t have military contracts and wants to give me cash money to set records and make experimental short films about cycling, I would love to be in conversation.

$b tour 2023

If by some feat of hacking you were able to watch a movie on your cycling computer for those head-down, headwind moments on the TDR, what would you have watched?

Oh cool, an impossible question. Since I would still be riding a bike in this hypothetical, I guess I have to opt for something that I’ve already seen and doesn’t require subtitles. A good soundtrack is probably the biggest priority here. I think a Gregg Araki flick like Nowhere, or The Doom Generation would be my go-to’s since they’re fast-paced and have an amazing mix of shoegaze and 90’s electronic music.

Funny enough, in lieu of the ability to actually watch things, I have actually downloaded and queued up a bunch of commentary tracks from my favorite movies to listen to on the CT.

Anything you are changing up for the CT ride, gear-wise or personally?

I’m on the same brand redacted hardtail as I used on the AZT and Tour Divide. It’ll have a fork with 120mm of travel instead of 110, a dropper that hopefully works, even thicker grips, and some XTR Trail pedals because I finally was able to purchase some shoes that aren’t stiff as a rock and designed for XC racing. I also have a pair of neoprene gloves that I purchased from a fishing shop, praying they do me well for at least one of the rainstorms I’ll inevitably encounter. I’ve been encouraged to bring a candle in case I spend a night in a pit toilet, but I think a more ultralight solution to that problem exists.

If you want to keep up with Austin’s CT check her Trackleader and if you would like to support her efforts directly check out her Patreaon !

Where is the Pope visiting on his tour of Asia? Francis arrives in Indonesia

Pope Francis arrived at Jakarta airport before thousands of excited Indonesians on Tuesday as he begins his ambitious Asia-Pacific tour.

The 87-year-old pontiff is expected to urge global action on climate change when he visits four countries over the next 10 days, Reuters has reported.

The Pope passed through Jakarta towards the Vatican embassy, where he is staying, and small crowds of people were seen waving excitedly.

"I'm so happy, I feel so blessed," said Enny Rahail, 52, who travelled 3,000 km (1,860 miles) to Jakarta from her home in southeast Maluku before standing for two hours in the midday heat to wave to the pope outside the embassy.

"As Indonesians, we are happy because the Catholic leader comes to our country," said Ms Rahail, who called Francis an "advocate for peace" and said she cried as the pope arrived.

Here is all you need to know about his tour.

$b tour 2023

Where is Pope Francis visiting?

As soon as he arrived, he held an informal meeting with a group of refugees living in Indonesia .

The Vatican gave few details, but said the group included persons from Somalia, Sri Lanka and members of the persecuted Rohingya minority from Myanmar.

The ageing pope was not set to attend any public events on Tuesday, to allow him time for rest after the 13-hour overnight flight from Rome.

From there, he is expected to travel nearly 33,000 km around the region - taking in East Timor, Singapore and Papua New Guinea.

He flies back on September 13.

$b tour 2023

What are the aims of the tour?

An address to Indonesia's political leaders on Wednesday will be the pope's first official event. The following day, he will participate in an inter-religious meeting at Southeast Asia 's largest mosque, the Istiqlal Mosque.

Francis, who pushed for the 2015 Paris climate pact, is expected to continue voicing appeals to confront the dangers of a warming globe.

Jakarta, the Indonesian capital home to at least 10 million people, is vulnerable to climate change, as it tackles chronic flooding and sinking land. The government is building a new capital, Nusantara, on the island of Borneo.

Just 3 per cent of a population of about 280 million is Catholic in Indonesia, which is the world's most populous Muslim-majority nation.

"This is a very historic visit," Indonesian president Joko Widodo told reporters before the pope's arrival, offering Francis a warm welcome on a long-planned visit that had been delayed by the Covid-19 pandemic.

"Indonesia and the Vatican have a similar commitment to cultivate peace and brotherhood as well as ensure prosperity for the people."

$b tour 2023

What has the Pope said?

On Monday, the Pope offered only a few words about the trip, saying the coming days would represent his longest voyage abroad.

Francis, who is not only the leader of the world's 1.4 billion Catholics but also the Vatican's head of state, wired customary greetings to every country he crossed on the way to Indonesia, including Iran, India, Pakistan and Turkey.

He offered prayers of peace, hopes for prosperity, or divine blessings, in messages varying with each country.

Kings of Leon reflect on their road to success as they kick off new tour

Kings of Leon, who exploded onto the music scene in 2008 with songs like “Use Somebody” and “Sex on Fire,” are back with a fresh new sound and a newfound energy.

The rock group, which dropped their ninth album “Can We Please Have Fun” in May, has garnered significant buzz and climbed the Billboard charts again thanks to songs like “Mustang.”

For more on this story watch Top Story with Tom Llamas on NBC News NOW tonight at 7:00 p.m. ET/6:00 p.m. CT.

“I will say I’ve never felt this good in my life. And I feel like all of us could say that this is the best we’ve ever felt as a band,” lead singer Caleb Followill told NBC News in an exclusive interview from their studio in Nashville, Tennessee. “After success... it just feels like you’re trying to kind of match something or meet people’s expectations. With this album, I feel like we just kind of shed all that and just wanted to make something that excited us and us alone. As selfish as that sounds.”

But the group says that their latest album title isn’t ironic.

When asked if there was a time when they weren’t having fun, Caleb said: “Several times I think before this album ... it felt like things were kind of coming to an end or maybe the inspiration was kind of fizzling out.”

The group, which consists of brothers Caleb, Nathan, Jared and cousin Matthew Followill, said that in the years following their smash hits and mainstream success, they began to lose their initial excitement. It nearly caused them to go their separate ways.

“I think there have been times when we’ve all felt amongst ourselves like, ‘Yeah, this isn’t as fun as it once was, and it feels like work,’” Caleb said.

But after the death of their mom, Betty-Ann, in 2021, the group began to find their spark again.

“I do believe that her passing was the key to us finding that inspiration. So all of this is because of that,” Caleb said.

And for the band, a new beginning also meant leaving their longtime record label RCA and moving over to Capitol Records.

“Just getting rid of some of that kind of corporate feel, which, you know, they were always good to us,” Jared said. “It was not a bad relationship whatsoever, but just being able to do it ourselves. ... It felt like an indie record, and that’s when we had fun.”

Kings of Leon made a name for themselves in their early days with their songs that oozed sex appeal and were rooted in their rock ’n’ roll lifestyle. But a lot has changed since then. These guys now are proud dads with a combined nine kids between them.

“It’s great. It’s an added layer to tour life,” Nathan said. “As far as another thing we have in common that we can kind of commiserate with, or, you know, sit there and be sad that we’re missing them.”

Instead of pulling all-nighters, Jared laughed, “We like to party until the sun goes down.”

Their kids even at times inspiring songs on their new album, like in the lyrics of “Mustang”: “There’s a Mustang in the city / And it’s calling me out / Are you a Mustang or a kitty?”

“It would be like, what are they wearing? It’s like, ‘Oh, he’s wearing a Mustang T-shirt. Okay, I’m gonna sing about a Mustang,’” Caleb explained. “She’s watching a video about cats. I’m gonna compare a Mustang to a kitty, you know?’”

For these guys, who kicked off their North American tour last month, it’s always been about family. They began dabbling in music when they were on the road with their parents, as their dad, a traveling preacher, took them to small Southern towns.

“Everything about our childhood is the reason that we’re here,” Caleb said. “The fact that we grew up in a car, as opposed to a house. The fact that we had windows instead of television, you know? We were sponges soaking it all in, even if we didn’t realize it. We didn’t have the latest games and toys. So we had to make up our own things ... it formed us to be creative."

It was through performing in churches that they realized maybe music could be more than just a hobby.

“I don’t know if anybody knew what to expect ... they were almost just like, ‘Go do it,’ ‘Go see what happens,’ and ‘We’ll be here when it, you know, maybe, probably doesn’t work.’ But yeah, our mom and dad were both just kind of cautiously optimistic,” Jared said.

The Followill family bonds run deep. The boys named their band after their late grandfather Leon.

“He was the biggest fan,” Caleb said. “Whenever we were coming up with band names, something with kings popped up. And then when ‘Kings of Leon,’ when that was said, we realized that it was something that was going to tie us all together because he’s all of our grandfather.” The singer and guitarist added: “He was very proud. And it’s a great, great feeling when you can make your grandparents proud.”

As they cross the country again, this time hitting stages in cities like New York, Austin, Texas, and their hometown, Nashville, they realize that putting on a show for fans is more important than ever because these days going to a concert isn’t cheap. According to Pollstar, the average ticket price for top tours this year hit a record $123. Something the guys say gives them even more of a reason to provide their fans with a show they’ll remember.

“It can’t just be something they’ve seen before,” Caleb said. “So for us, in every aspect of what we do, we have stepped it up ... Otherwise, we kind of look around [and] it’s like the conveyor belt.”

Ways they are spicing up their tour is by debuting an exclusive song in each city and adding visuals to their music on stage.

As they reflect on their 20-year journey, they’re just grateful to be making music and, of course, having fun.

“Fun looks like all this ... what we’re doing,” Matthew said. “You know, it’s not lost on us how lucky we are and what we do. We’re just so lucky to still be here doing it.”
