The PGA Tour Qualifying Tournament - better known as Q-School - was first played in 1965, and John Schlee was the first winner; and last played in 2012, with Dong-hwan Lee as the winner. In between, the tournament was played annually, with two tournaments (Spring and Fall) played in 1968-69 and 1975-81.

Each year, the tournament resulted in a certain number of golfers earning PGA Tour cards - membership in and playing privileges on the tour for the following PGA Tour season. The tournament also awarded, in its final stage, status on the Web.com Tour to participants who failed to earn PGA Tour cards.

However, beginning in 2013, "PGA Tour Q-School" ceased to exist as the tour began using an alternate method to award tour cards. A qualifying tournament is still played, but it offers a route only to the Web.com Tour, not the PGA Tour. The new method of earning PGA Tour cards is the Web.com Tour Finals , a series of tournaments at which 50 PGA Tour cards are available. The first Web.com Tour Finals took place in September 2013.

See our primer on PGA Tour Qualifying for all the ways golfers can currently attempt to gain tour status.

PGA Tour Qualifying Tournament Format

The PGA Tour Qualifying Tournament was actually a series of tournaments, beginning with first-stage qualifiers played at numerous locations around the United States. Golfers who made the grade at the first stage advanced to second-stage qualifiers. And golfers advancing out of the second stage moved on to the Final Stage - the six-round grind that is what most people referred to when mentioning "Q-School."

Some golfers were able to skip the first stage, and others even the second stage, if they met certain criteria (such as having conditional status on the PGA Tour, or being a past champion).

Following six rounds of stroke play at the Final Stage, the highest finishers received fully exempt status on the PGA Tour for the following year. That number was usually around the low 25 or low 30 finishers, plus ties.

PGA Tour Q-School Trivia

  • Among Q-School medalists, Ben Crenshaw went on to win the most PGA Tour tournaments (19).
  • Crenshaw and Fuzzy Zoeller have the major majors among Q-School medalists, two each.
  • Robin Freeman is the only golfer to be a Q-School medalist in two different years.
  • The youngest golfer to get through PGA Tour Q-School and earn his card is Si Woo Kim, who was 17 years, 5 months old when he "graduated" from the 2012 final-stage qualifier.

Education is a purposeful activity directed at achieving certain aims, such as transmitting knowledge or fostering skills and character traits. These aims may include the development of understanding, rationality, kindness, and honesty. Various researchers emphasize the role of critical thinking in order to distinguish education from indoctrination. Some theorists require that education results in an improvement of the student while others prefer a value-neutral definition of the term. In a slightly different sense, education may also refer, not to the process, but to the product of this process: the mental states and dispositions possessed by educated people. Education originated as the transmission of cultural heritage from one generation to the next. Today, educational goals increasingly encompass new ideas such as the liberation of learners, skills needed for modern society, empathy, and complex vocational skills.

Tony Romo making another attempt at PGA Tour Q-School

1981 pga tour qualifying school

Tony Romo isn't giving up on his golfing dreams.

Romo, the former Dallas Cowboys quarterback making roughly $17.5 million per year to call NFL games for CBS, is entered into a PGA Tour Q-School pre-qualifier later this month, Golf Channel reported Monday.

Romo's pre-qualifier will take place September 18-20 at Sand Creek Station Golf Club in Newton, Kan. The Wednesday-Friday schedule of the tournament isn't likely to keep him away from football duties for too long.

He and Jim Nantz will be on the call of the Cincinnati Bengals at Kansas City Chiefs game this Sunday before Romo travels south to the Wichita area for the pre-qualifier.

Romo, 44, has played Q-School before. He failed to get past pre-qualifying in each of the past two years, but in 2018, he advanced to the first stage before bowing out.

PGA Tour Q-School offers a pathway for golfers to secure tour cards for the following season. Players who narrowly miss out can also earn status on the Korn Ferry Tour and the PGA Tour Americas.

Romo has played several PGA Tour and Korn Ferry Tour events on sponsors' exemptions, including the 2019 Byron Nelson. He has missed the cut three times and withdrawn once. He also has attempted to qualify for the US Open in the past.

The heady highs and heartbreaking lows of Q School

Joe Daley's catastrophic triple bogey at 2000 PGA TOUR Q-School

The idea came from Earl Stewart, a PGA pro, in 1963. This wasn't long before the PGA Tour split from the PGA of America, and came at a time when the PGA's touring professionals, Arnold Palmer chief among them, were beginning to command more attention and money. As the Tour grew, Stewart and many others recognized that there was a need for a streamlined path for players to actually reach the tour. At that point, it was up to local sections to screen their best players, and that "qualification" process could vary, and was not always the play-based meritocracy it should have been. When Stewart suggested an annual qualifying tournament, the idea caught on and was implemented by 1965.

Since then, "Q School" (which used to involve actual lectures on etiquette, rules, and various other topics, hence the word "school") has gone through many incarnations, and has been influenced by changes in the greater game. For several years at the start, there were two Q Schools each year, one in the spring and one in the fall, and that's because getting your card there just meant becoming one of the Tour's "rabbits"—the traveling pros who were allowed to Monday qualify each week, and whose aim was to make the top 60 in order to become full status members. That ended in '82 when Deane Beman began the era of the fully exempt Tour. When the Ben Hogan Tour (now the Korn Ferry Tour) began in 1990, it offered a second, season-long path to the Tour for pros and reduced the number of cards given out at Q School. In 2012, Q School became a path to the Korn Ferry Tour only, and that lasted until 2023, when they reverted to giving Tour cards, albeit just five of them.

MORE: The story of a Q School DQ for the ages

Throughout that history, the tournament has been ripe with drama, and there's no getting around the fact that much of the drama ended in heartbreak. When people are fighting for their competitive lives, the stakes are as high as they get, and even today players like Scottie Scheffler remember Q School as the most nervous moments of their professional lives. Maybe Steve Pate said it best when he told John Feinstein that when Tour players get together, they don't tell stories about the majors...they tell stories about Q School.

On this week's Local Knowledge podcast, we dig into the history of Q School, and unearth some of the great triumphs and heartbreaks from an institution that is now 60 years old, and has both made and broken professional golfers for every second of its existence. Former nfl qb tony romo again entered into pga tour q-school.

Tony Romo is giving PGA Tour Q-School another go.

The former Dallas Cowboys quarterback and current CBS analyst is entered into the Sept. 18-20 pre-qualifier at Sand Creek Station Golf Club in Newton, Kansas.

Those dates are a Wednesday-Friday, so they won’t conflict with Romo’s broadcasting duties. It’s unclear which games Romo will work on the front and back ends of his pre-qualifier, though one would assume good bets are Bengals at Chiefs on Sept. 15 and Dolphins at Seahawks on Sept. 22.

This will be the third straight year that Romo has played pre-qualifying, the first of four stages of Q-School, which last year transitioned back to awarding some PGA Tour cards at final stage. Romo withdrew after two rounds of 6-over golf at last year’s pre-qualifier in Gunter, Texas, following his T-65 finish the year prior at pre-qualifying in Lantana, Texas.

Romo has advanced through pre-qualifying before, though, doing so in 2018 in Lantana. He went on to shoot 13 over and miss comfortably at first stage in Garland, Texas, where he played alongside Scottie Scheffler, then a recent graduate of the University of Texas, in the first two rounds.

Romo’s most recent tournament was the Utah State Open, where he made the cut but tied for 59th, 23 shots behind the winner. He also played the America Century Championship this past July in Lake Tahoe, where he tied for 38th out of a field of 90 celebrities of varying skill levels.

The final stage of Q-School will be played Dec. 12-15 in Ponta Vedra Beach, Florida, where the top five and ties will earn PGA Tour cards.

Here is a look at some notables playing at each of the eight pre-qualifying sites:

Former NFL Star Tony Romo Takes Another Shot at PGA Tour Qualifying

Tony Romo, former NFL quarterback and current CBS analyst, is set to compete in the PGA Tour Q-School pre-qualifier at Sand Creek Station Golf Club in Kansas for the third consecutive year. This event consists of multiple stages, culminating in the awarding of PGA Tour cards to the top finishers. Romo's previous foray into these qualifiers saw him advance past the pre-qualifying stage once, but he faced difficulties in subsequent rounds. Despite a less-than-stellar performance this year in various tournaments, he continues to dedicate significant time to honing his golf skills.

  • Romo has played in four PGA Tour events, missing the cut each time.
  • In the American Century Championship, he finished 38th out of 90 players.

While many focus on Romo's mixed tournament results, his dedication to improvement and potential highlights his commitment as a golfer, indicating that success could still be within reach.

  • The pre-qualifier for Q-School runs from Wednesday to Friday, aligning with Romo's CBS football commitments.
  • The final stage of Q-School takes place December 12-15 in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida.

If Romo performs well in the pre-qualifying round, he could secure a place in the next stages of Q-School, potentially leading to a shot at a PGA Tour card and further tournament opportunities.

Romo's pursuit of a PGA Tour card underscores his commitment to golf, despite previous setbacks; his ongoing efforts may lead to significant achievements in the sport.
