6 southern college towns that love football.
By Melissa Corbin
September 18, 2024
The arrival of fall heralds college football season, when fans pour into Southern campuses and towns to root for their teams and celebrate. In many of these parts, football is like a religion.
I’ve never been a die-hard sports fan, but I’ve always been curious about what makes game day such a big deal. Why would people plan their Saturdays around football? What traditions, foods, and college hangouts are wrapped up in the before- and after-game experiences?
So I talked to devoted alumni at Southeastern Conference (SEC) schools, including a fan whose fascination started as a child, a former college football player, and a woman who got engaged at a game. All of them shared details about their love affairs with their respective SEC schools and teams.
Here’s the inside scoop on where to go and what to do at six college towns to help you plan your own autumn escape.
1. University of Mississippi
Ole Miss fans pack The Grove before, during, and after games at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium. Ole Miss Pix
Erin Hornsby Holcomb attended the University of Mississippi—better known as Ole Miss—in the early 2000s, when Eli Manning was quarterback.
“Back then, you couldn’t drink in the stadium,” she recalls, so people went to The Grove for pregame festivities. “It was the place.” It still is. A 10-acre stretch of lawn in the middle of campus, The Grove teems with tailgaters on game days. It’s like a massive, dressed-down cocktail party where everyone dons their team’s colors.
Some tents are decked out with chandeliers, elaborate spreads of food, and TVs. Fans line the sidewalk and erupt in cheers as the football team strolls by on its way to Vaught-Hemingway Stadium .
Holcomb and her husband, Craig, still attend games at Ole Miss, where their romance blossomed as students. One game was particularly memorable. Several years after they graduated, Craig (who was a fullback for the Rebels) popped the question on the field before the 2014 game against Mississippi State, known as the Egg Bowl.

Holcomb says The Library is the go-to bar in Oxford; other options are McEwen’s Oxford , Bouré , or Snackbar . If you have time to wait in line for breakfast, she advises, Big Bad Breakfast is a must, and Bottletree Bakery has the best pastries in town.
Fans of Williams Faulkner can tour his home, Rowan Oak, which inspired many of his works. Photo courtesy Visit Oxford MS
Live-music aficionados will love The Lyric Oxford , originally a livery stable owned by William Faulkner’s family. Learn more about Faulkner during a tour of Rowan Oak , his home for more than 40 years. Avid readers can indulge at legendary Square Books .
Book lovers could easily spend hours perusing Square Books on the Oxford square. Photo courtesy Visit Oxford MS
Where to stay: A mere 150 steps from The Grove, The Inn at Ole Miss is the only hotel on campus (rates start at $109). If you prefer to avoid the crowds, Graduate Oxford , located just off the town square, is the way to go. Rates start at $128.

2. Louisiana State University
Baton Rouge
A 2014 graduate of Louisiana State University (LSU), Erin Rosetti was hooked on her first visit. “When I stepped on campus and saw the live oaks and the architecture, I felt completely enveloped by the passion, enthusiasm, and beauty that is LSU’s campus,” she says.

There’s nothing like an LSU game at Tiger Stadium , she adds. Opposing teams consider the venue, known as Death Valley, one of the toughest places to play in, largely because of how loud it is. The stadium has a capacity of 102,321 fans, and the noise can be deafening.

On game day, the campus becomes one huge tailgate party. As the marching band, players, and cheerleaders walk down Victory Hill into Death Valley, the anticipation reaches a fever pitch.
You can spot fans raising a glass at two locations of both The Chimes Restaurant & Tap Room and Walk-On’s Sports Bistreaux & Bar . But Rosetti says the best place to go is Fred’s Bar and Grill —an LSU institution where notable alumnus Shaquille O’Neal has appeared as a guest DJ.
Where to stay: Cook Hotel and Conference Center on the edge of the LSU campus provides a boutique hotel experience overlooking scenic University Lake. Rates start at $179.

3. University of Arkansas
Fayetteville
Jim Harris fell in love with the Razorbacks when he was just 7 years old. A poster of All-American defensive end Bruce James hung in his childhood bedroom.
To Harris’ surprise, he and James would become friends later in life. As a newspaper reporter, Harris covered the football team for decades. A lot has changed since his college years in the late 1970s, but Harris notes “the atmosphere now is great because of the team’s following.”
Harris is part of Tusk to Tail , a tailgating group that follows the team to away games. Before home games, Harris urges fans to watch the team walk down Fayetteville’s Maple Street, which closes to vehicles about 2 1/2 hours prior to kickoff.

After you’ve taken your seat at Donald W. Reynolds Razorback Stadium, expect to hear the Hog Call, a chant of “Wooo Pig Sooie” accompanied by finger wiggling and fist pumping. It’s one of the most recognizable chants in sports.
In Fayetteville, Harris recommends heading to Dickson Street, which “is really hopping on game weekends, especially on Friday nights.” Grub’s Bar and Grille is one of his favorites within the entertainment district. For a fun restaurant around the town square, Harris swears by Hugo’s , a burger-centric eatery that’s been a go-to spot for nearly 50 years.
Where to stay: Relax on the wraparound porch at The Inn at Carnall Hall , formerly a women’s dormitory (rates start at $149). Or stay close to the action of the square at Graduate Fayetteville , with guest rooms inspired by campus legends and local history. Rates start at $127.

4. University of Alabama
Former Alabama offensive lineman Griff Redmill fondly remembers his playing days: “It was a huge goal and accomplishment for me.” He was part of the last signing class before coach Gene Stallings retired in 1996. “On game-day weekends,” Redmill says, “the town is hopping with a lot of activity, a lot of excitement, and a lot of traffic.”
And when it comes to tailgating, the Quad is where it’s at. At the heart of the campus, the 22-acre grassy area swells with crimson-clad revelers under red-and-white tents. Likewise, The Houndstooth Sports Bar (named after legendary coach Paul “Bear” Bryant’s familiar patterned hat) is a hot spot where the team’s “Roll Tide, Roll” rallying cry often resonates.
Redmill adds that Chuck’s Fish is probably the best spot to eat downtown, “but there’s a very slim chance of getting in on a Saturday during football season.”

To embrace Crimson Tide history, Redmill recommends visiting the Walk of Fame at Denny Chimes, where the handprints of Alabama football captains are immortalized in concrete. Learn about Bryant’s 25-year coaching career at the Paul W. Bryant Museum .

And Redmill advises not to miss the pageantry of the Walk of Champions, when the players arrive at Bryant-Denny Stadium about two hours before the game.
Where to stay: The historic Bama Bed & Breakfast is located just two blocks from the stadium. Dating to 1823, the home drips with Southern elegance. Rates start at $140.

5. The University of Tennessee

Arguably one of the most legendary college fight songs, “Rocky Top” is essential to the culture of the Tennessee Volunteers, or Vols. “Any fair-weather fan of any kind of sport—doesn’t have to be football—would be able to hear just the chorus of ‘Rocky Top’ and know what it is,” says 2005 University of Tennessee (UT) graduate Kristin Luna. “You’ll always be home sweet home to me,” a part of the refrain referring to the Tennessee hills, resonates with Luna and other zealous fans.

For tailgating, options include gathering in front of Neyland Stadium or at nearby Circle Park. College football stadiums located near water are rare, so check out the Vol Navy on the Tennessee River—where people on yachts, pontoon boats, and jon boats take part in pregame “sail-gating.”
While Cool Beans is a fan-favorite dive on “the strip,” Luna recommends out-of-towners take time to enjoy downtown Knoxville’s Market Square , which hosts a farmers market on Wednesdays and Saturdays amid restaurants and bars. If you don’t have tickets to the game, you can watch the action at Yee-Haw Brewing Co. , a popular viewing venue with an expansive outdoor beer garden.
While on campus, check out The Rock —a 97.5-ton hunk of dolomite at Volunteer Boulevard and Pat Head Summitt Street. Painting the rock with art and messages is a treasured UT tradition.

Where to stay: Close to Neyland Stadium, Graduate Knoxville is home to Peyton Manning’s Western-inspired restaurant, Saloon 16 , a nod to his UT jersey number. Photos highlight his years at UT (1994–1997) and his storied NFL career. Rates start at $184.

6. University of Kentucky, Lexington
Wildcat alumnus and season ticket holder Chris Griggs has a special reason for his team allegiance: “I probably wouldn’t be married if it weren’t for former quarterback Andre’ Woodson.” He remembers Woodson carrying the team to victory in a 2007 game. “If we had lost, there’s no way I would have gone out for a celebration beer,” he says. And that’s when he met his wife, Leigh.
The tailgating scene is comparable to many other schools, but what sets UK apart is that Lexington is home to Keeneland —a world-class horse-racing facility open to the public.
Griggs notes that Lexington is part of Bourbon Country, and when there’s a night home game, fans start their day at Keeneland with bourbon in hand. Then during the Cat Walk prior to kickoff, the team makes its way through a raucous crowd along Talbott Todd Way near the stadium. When fans head to Kroger Field, “everybody walks in ready to be loud,” he says.

Griggs recommends Winchell’s Restaurant and Sports Bar as the best Wildcat fan hang. And if you’d like to try some of the finest “brown water” around, head to James E. Pepper Distilling Co. in the Lexington Distillery District , which also boasts restaurants, a brewery, and one of Lexington’s best listening rooms— The Burl . To appreciate Lexington’s horse-racing heritage, book a tour with Visit Horse Country to see some of its most famous farms.
Where to stay: The 88-room boutique 21c Museum Hotel downtown includes a contemporary art museum, a cultural center, and the Lockbox restaurant. Rates start at $189. The Campbell House Lexington, Curio Collection by Hilton is a historic hotel with an equestrian theme and Southern hospitality. Rates start at $144.
