Hailing from the town of Warrnambool, Victoria in Australia in 2003, Airbourne have brought back to the mainstream, a classic rock sound driven by guitars and gritty vocals, adorning catchy choruses that have earned the band a global following.

Brothers, Ryan and Joel O’Keeffe, came together to form a band in 2003 and recruited David Roads and Adam Jacobson. They worked at the Hotel Warrnambool and would bring their instruments to work so that after their shifts they could jam out song ideas. They went on to win a competition, called Push-On in Melbourne. It was their self-funded eight track EP entitled “Ready to Rock” that appeared in July 2004, that fell into the hands of Capitol Records whom they signed a five album record deal with.

It was a journey to the US for the band to work on their debut studio album, “Runnin’ Wild” with Bob Marlette who had produced albums with Ozzy Osbourne and Alice Cooper. The album was released in Australia on June 23rd 2007, and they released three singles from the album; “Runnin’ Wild”, “Too Much Too Young Too Fast” which featured on Guitar Hero; World Tour and “Diamond in the Rough”. The album made it to the top 30 of the ARIA Albums Chart in Australia, and even managed to chart in Austria, Switzerland and France. Nearing the end of 2007, they supported Kid Rock and Korn and at the start of 2008, they moved permanently to the US. Their album by this point had charted on the UK Albums Chart, and on the Billboard 200.

At the beginning of 2009, Airbourne headed back into the studio to record their sophomore album “No Guts. No Glory”. It was later released on March 8th 2010. The song “Born to Kill” was played on BBC Radio 1’s Rock Show. It reached the top 20 on the ARIA Albums Chart, and also in five other countries. They were fortunate enough to support Iron Maiden on their Final Frontier World Tour from July 20th to August 1st 2011. The band announced in November 2011 that they had been working on a new album. That album would be called “Black Dog Barking” and would go on to reach to top forty of ten countries.

Live reviews

“Guitar music is dead!” is a phrase that has not been infrequently thrown around over the past decade. Yet whilst rock music might not dominate the mainstream, this is clearly a falsity. One band which refuses to let hard rock die is Australian quartet Airbourne, who have released some of the finest fist-pumping riffs since 2003. Playing Gibson Explorers with big, wild, curly hair, they certainly look the part. Releasing three studio albums thus far, they have proven that their riotous and energetic music could have stood up against the biggest hair-metal bands of the 80s.

Their set at German festival Rock Am Ring in 2013 brought enough power and vigour to have induced severe concussion in the audience from the sheer amount of uncontrollable head-banging. Their music is made to be played in stadiums, to which they received a roar of appreciation as they played tracks “Running Wild,” “Diamond in the Rough” and “Black Dog Barking.” After the atmospheric intro, they ran out to stage going straight into “Ready to Rock,” with the crowd certainly feeling the band’s massive energy, jumping wildly in appreciation.

One of the best things about Airbourne is simply that their music is just pure fun. Too often humour is lost due to artistic pretensions but the likes of Airbourne restore a sense of reckless joy that comes from just having fun, rocking out with your friends. Hearing their songs takes you back to a time when posing in front of a mirror with your guitar slung low made you feel fantastic and full of wild dreams of playing to thousands of people. Listening to Airbourne keeps this spirit alive, eroding any self-consciousness and embarrassment at raising your devil horns and ferociously nodding your head.

If you’re in any way familiar with Airbourne, or indeed of any of the press attention that’s surrounded them for their career so far, you’ll probably already be wondering how many words I’m going to be able to get into this review before I mention AC/DC. In this case, it’s fifty-one. That’s the thing about Airbourne; they’ve never quite been able to shake off comparisons to the legendary Australian outfit, with their classic rock sound certainly in debt to some of the titans of the genre, and the vocals provided by frontman Joel O’Keefe being uncannily similar to those of Brian Johnson. That said, they’ve plenty of merit in their own right; they have a huge cult fanbase across the world, and are a big draw in their native Australia, playing big shows across the country on a regular basis. They also toured club-sized venues in the UK last year after releasing Black Dog Barking, playing heavy sets that drew upon tracks from all three of their full-lengths and saw some fierce musicianship on display; I daresay they might be more technically proficient than that band they’re so often compared to, in fact, and certainly well worth checking out next time they hit the road.

Joeg_67’s profile image

Hailing all the way from Warrnambool, down under in Australia, Airbourne have a sold out show this evening. They bring their arsenal of heavy distorted guitars played in the style of some of rock music’s biggest heroes such as AC/DC and Deep Purple, as though they are a not so current but transcendent version of English rockers, The Darkness. Joel O’Keeffe’s screaming vocals are at the epicenter of some of the largest and loudest earthquake sing-alongs that this venue has ever experienced. Airbourne have achieve such great chart success, globally with their three studio albums charting in over ten different countries with Germany being their most successful recipients, seeing their last two albums make it to the top 5.

The musicality of both O’Keefe brothers is intricate, with them playing guitar solos in fantastic harmony, similar to that of Thin Lizzy, the audience just singing along as though there is no tomorrow. Their breakthrough song “Too Much, Too Young Too Fast” is probably their biggest song of the night, with a mammoth guitar riff to match.

Old school Heavy fuckin Metal Rock n Roll. These guys are so much more than ACDC-a-likes. Marshall stacked, sweating buckets within minutes on stage. Great anthemic tunes banged out super tight. Great audience rapport, not my thing but best mosh pit I've seen in a while - full of topless sweaty youths. Shredding on the back of a roadie in the middle of the audience. They deservedly got raucous approval, smashed it. My ears rang for hours and every punter left breathless with a shit-eating grin on their face.

Not the first time I've seen Airbourne and definitely not the last. I can't wait to see them again, just a superb live band and the support bands were great too. Phil Campbell and the Bastard Sons were excellent.

CONCERT REVIEW: AIRBORNE Runs Wild at Gramercy Theater, New York (September 9th, 2022)

airbourne band tour

On Friday night, the Australian group Airbourne drew a packed house on opening night of their U.S. & Canada Tour at The Gramercy Theatre in NYC. Their tour started September 9th and runs through October 11th in Los Angeles. It’s the band’s first U.S. and Canadian tour since 2016. Their original tour to support their 2019 release, “Boneshaker,” was unfortunately scrapped due to COVID.

The boys hit the stage dressed in black from head to toe and sweaty like they did a pre-show lap around the block. The 90-minute concert contained no props, pyro, or EDM mixes; just straight up in your face rock & roll while the band played some new songs off  “Boneshaker” and some of their familiar classics. Airbourne has remained musically steadfast and consistently powerful since they came on the scene in 2007 with their debut release “Runnin’ Wild.” Since then, they have released four additional albums every two or three years. They are the perfect escape to immerse yourself in the power of a live show and forget all the nonsense going on in the world.

They opened the show with “Ready to Rock,” as fans were more than ready. Those who knew what to expect came shirtless, planning to get soaked with beer, and do some moshing! As soon as the first chord was struck, the audience pitch turned frenzied as the crowd sang along exultantly; fists raised in the air. If there were doubts that it might take the band a few shows to find their groove, rest assured it was not the case as Joel O’Keeffe [lead vocals/guitar], Ryan O’Keeffe [drums], Justin Street [bass], and the newest member Jarrad Morrice [guitar], know how to deliver a powerful show consistently.

airbourne band tour

Joel , Mr. Nitro himself, was poised at the ready with his smutty smirk as he delivered Airbourne ‘s double-entendres lyrical content based on lust, Hell, and all things sexual. A blizzard of Gibson Explorer guitars led by Joel and Jarrad fueled the thunderous riffs pouring out of their bloodied, beaten, and scared Marshall amps and stacks. The show consisted of a 12-songs, and the band didn’t ignore fan favorites that helped put them on the map, like “Girls in Black,” “Too Much, Too Young, Too Fast,” “Live it Up,” and “Diamond in the Rough.” They performed two songs from “Boneshaker” , “Burn out the Nitro” and the title track.

airbourne band tour

Joel was the focal point with his compelling gruff vocals and guitar showmanship. A rebellious spirit burns within him, coupled with self-assurance in his singing and playing, which makes him one of the greatest front men. He is also not afraid to jump into the crowd and mix it up. This was evident by the second song when he was hoisted on his roadie’s shoulders and carried into the crowd cracking beer cans on his head. Later, he randomly jumped off the stage to drink with them again. Fans loved it as they went wild! Speaking of “mixing it up,” mid-set, Joel and the band took a moment from their sonic assault to toast Lemmy Kilmister by bringing out a portable Lemmy ’s bar cart and pouring drinks of Jack Daniel ‘s and Coke for themselves and their fans. To keep the party going in high gear, Joel tossed half cups of beer like grenades high into the venue for fans to try and catch; regardless of being caught or missed, the splatter effect was monstrous.

airbourne band tour

Before the show, I asked Joel : “You always come across as very calm and cool, but on stage, you are a madman. Tell me about that transformation and what happens when you hit the stage.” He replied, “It’s really about the power of the guitar; when you run out in front of the crowd, you can’t stand there and stare at your shoes. You have a wall of Marshalls behind you, so it’s like a shot of adrenaline. It doesn’t wear off until you leave the stage. You can be running on fumes, and the crowd can actually pick you up. They keep you upright until you leave the stage when you hit the floor. As soon as I get off stage, I’m done! You can order me a coffin and throw me in. People would think I died, and you can have an open-casket funeral backstage [laughing]. You give them everything, and that’s the only way to do it. You don’t think about the next gig; you just think about the one you’re doing and give it all you got.”

airbourne band tour

Keeping up with Joel ‘s and Matt ‘s playing was Justin ‘s bass playing with his lightning-fast fingers and head thrashing. His bass and neck stimulatingly took a beating through the night. If you are wondering if his neck hurts after a show, pre-show, he told me, “Not really!” Perfectly stated! His bass playing supplies the power and groove to Airbourne ‘s songs while marrying nicely to Ryan ‘s solid backbeat and serving-the-song drumming. He is a no-nonsense drummer that plays with style and grace as all Hell is exploding around him.

airbourne band tour

Fans have been starved for a good hard rock band, and Airborne fits the bill. When the show was over, the band and fans were equally sweaty, beer-soaked, and exhausted; it was a testament to the band’s stamina and the sheer power of rock & roll that all fans came out smiling! Tickets to their remaining dates can be purchased HERE .

Watch AIRBOURNE Perform In Moscow

Fan-filmed video footage of AIRBOURNE 's entire September 30 performance at GlavClub in Moscow, Russia can be seen below.

AIRBOURNE released "Diamond Cuts" on September 29 via Nettwerk . The box set was made available in limited-edition vinyl and CD formats, containing the band's first three discs — "Runnin Wild" , "No Guts. No Glory." and "Black Dog Barking" — along with the brand new "Diamond Cuts - The B-Sides" collection featuring two previously unavailable tracks ( "Money" and "Heavy Weight Lover" ) plus a bonus DVD of the brand new band documentary, "It's All For Rock 'N' Roll" , housed in a slipcase box including original "Diamond Cuts" artwork.

" 'Money' was found covered in piles of dust and reel to reel tape," said AIRBOURNE . "It was part of the recording sessions for 'No Guts. No Glory.' , and, for some reason, it just didn't make the album, but hearing it again today we're pumped to get it out there."

AIRBOURNE in April parted ways with guitarist David Roads and replaced him with Harri Harrison ( PALACE OF THE KING ).

The band's latest album, "Breakin' Outta Hell" , landed in the Top 10 in both the U.K. and Australia after its September 2016 release.

Attack in Moscow: What role does the band Picnic play?

A t least 137 people have been killed in the attack on the "Crocus City Hall" in Moscow. The Russian rock band, Picnic, was due to perform on stage on Friday. What does their performance have to do with the attack? On the evening of Friday March 22, at around 8 p.m. local time, the Moscow concert venue, Crocus City Hall, became the scene of a bloody attack -- the exact background of which is still the subject of speculation. At least 137 were killed in the massacre, while many others are in critical condition. They were all awaiting a concert by the Russian rock band Picnic, which was due to start at 9 p.m.

'Wash yourself with your own blood'

Russia has been in a state of shock ever since. While the whole world is expressing its sympathy, rumors and false information are doing the rounds. Four suspects have been brought before a court in the Russian capital. The four Tajiks were formally accused of involvement in a terrorist attack by the Basmanny district court on Sunday evening. They face possible life imprisonment. At the same time, people are wondering why the terrorists chose this particular event. Was the attack also aimed at the band Picnic?

"Fear nothing, fear nothing -- no fire, no ringing shadow. You are no longer a rosy child. Wash yourself with your own blood in the morning. And shake the blossoming day." These are some of the lyrics of Picnic's new song, which was released on March 7 on the band's YouTube channel.

Those lines sound almost prophetic, especially now in Russia. A message posted on the band's website reads, "We express our deepest sympathy to the families and friends of the victims. We pray for the speedy recovery of the injured. We are deeply shocked by this terrible tragedy and mourn with you." The band's musicians were unharmed because they were able to hide in the dressing room.

Picnic is one of the veterans of the Russian music scene, with origins in progressive rock. Founded in 1978 in St. Petersburg, which was still called Leningrad then, the band initially called itself Orion before changing its name to Picnic in 1981. Both monikers go back to the typical Soviet rock scene trick of choosing names that sound Western but cannot be banned.

In the 1980s, however, Picnic ended up on the list of bands that were denied major public appearances. The musicians and their audience therefore lived out their love for role models such as Led Zeppelin and the Rolling Stones in rock clubs, sometimes underground. Singer and songwriter Edmund Shklyarsky has been the band leader since 1982. The son of a renowned scientist and a concert pianist, Shklyarsky attaches great importance to his Polish roots and his Catholic faith. From an early age, his sources of inspiration were not only the Rolling Stones and The Animals, but also Russian avant-garde poetry.

Picnic members are considered war supporters

In May 2023, Russian writer and nationalist activist Zakhar Prilepin praised the band's leader. According to Prilepin, Shklyarsky actively supported the "special operation" in Ukraine, among others through monetary donations. Prelepin further presumed that this was the "normal position of a Russian man and a Russian musician" -- a statement that has neither been denied nor confirmed by the members of Picnic.

Their being booked to perform in venue as renowned as the Crocus City Hall in Moscow can be seen as proof of the band's loyalty to the Russian state -- which had demanded a clear commitment from the country's rock and pop scene, especially when the war against Ukraine began. Musicians and bands who positioned themselves against the war -- including Russian stars such as Boris Grebenshchikov (Aquarium), Yuri Shevchuk (DDT) and Zemfira -- had to leave the country and suffered career setbacks. Russian pop diva Alla Pugacheva has also sharply criticized the Putin regime from abroad.

On the other hand, stars loyal to the regime are rewarded with lucrative performances and awards. The approximately 6,200 tickets for the Picnic concert on March 22 were almost sold out, as was the planned second gig on Saturday. Ticket prices ranged from E100 to E300 and the band was to be accompanied by a symphony orchestra and a "spectacular stage and light show," at least according to advertising.

Even before Russia's invasion of Ukraine, Picnic was added to the list of artists unwelcome in Ukraine. The reason for this was the band's repeated performances on the occupied Crimean peninsula, including in Sevastopol.

The day after the tragedy, numerous interview requests, including from DW, were met with nothing but expressions of grief and shock. On Sunday, March 24, Edmund Shklyarsky released a video message. "I would like to express my condolences to all the victims and relatives of this terrible and senseless tragedy," he said, adding that no words have yet been invented that could resurrect people and comfort their fellow human beings.

Whether there's any special significance in the terrorists' choice to attack a concert by this particular band remains a matter of speculation -- as does the question of whether Crocus City Hall plays any special role as the target of the carnage.

A concert venue of superlatives

Crocus City Hall is a state-of-the-art concert hall on the grounds of an exhibition complex and is probably the most prestigious stage in Moscow among musicians. With an audience capacity of 5,000 to 10,000 people, it is much larger than a traditional concert hall and only slightly smaller than a soccer stadium. In short, a superlative venue in Moscow with no competitors.

Completed in 2009, Crocus, as it is known for short, quickly became one of Russia's most important concert halls. Located some 20 kilometers from the Kremlin, the venue can be reached within 30 minutes from the city center, depending on Moscow's notorious traffic congestions. It's faster for residents of the affluent suburbs in the west of the city, who prefer to attend the concerts there.

The excellent public transport links could have been an argument for the terrorists to choose Crocus City Hall for their attack. In addition, security precautions on the outskirts of the city are not as strict as in the center of Moscow.

Cultural events canceled in Russia

The concert hall belongs to the group of companies owned by the Azerbaijani-Russian construction tycoon and oligarch Aras Agalarov and his son Emin, a businessman and singer. There were rumors when the Crocus opened that Aras Agalarov had built his son a stage.

In recent years, however, Emin Agalarov has put his pop career on hold and concentrated primarily on the development and marketing of Crocus City Hall. Over the years, internationally renowned bands have performed here: Scorpions, Smokie, Pet Shop Boys, Nazareth and A-ha, as well as Sting, Elton John, Thomas Anders, Vanessa May and many others. In 2013, Donald Trump even strayed onto the stage, as a special guest at the final of the Miss Universe competition. But those days of cosmopolitanism are long gone.

A look at the program at Crocus City Hall gives a good insight into the sensitivities of Russian society, which oscillates between denial of reality and resignation: Concerts by regime-compliant musicians alternate with entertainment blockbusters such as Japanese drum shows or women's stand-up comedy. Now all major events have been canceled, not only in the damaged Crocus City Hall, but throughout Russia. Theaters, cinemas and museums will remain closed for the time being.

Moscow concert hall attack: Why is ISIL targeting Russia?

Deadly attack in Moscow claimed by ISIL affiliate leaves more than 133 people dead and approximately 100 injured.

More than 133 people have been killed and more than 100 others were injured following a brazen attack on concertgoers at Moscow’s Crocus City Hall before a performance by a Soviet-era rock band on Friday.

Assailants dressed in camouflage uniforms opened fire and reportedly threw explosive devices inside the concert venue, which was left in flames with its roof collapsing after the deadly attack.

At least 115 killed, more than 185 injured in attack on moscow concert hall, more than 130 killed in moscow concert hall attack, ‘heinous, cowardly’: world reacts to attack on moscow concert hall, moscow concert hall attack: what do we know so far.

Eleven people had been detained, including four people directly involved in the armed assault, Russia’s Interfax news agency reported on Saturday.

ISIL’s Afghan branch – also known as the Islamic State in Khorasan Province, ISKP (ISIS-K) – has claimed responsibility for the attack and United States officials have confirmed the authenticity of that claim, according to the Reuters news agency.

Here is what we know about the group and their possible motive for the Moscow attack.

ISIL’s Afghanistan branch

The group remains one of the most active affiliates of ISIL and takes its title from an ancient caliphate in the region that once encompassed areas of Afghanistan, Iran, Pakistan and Turkmenistan.

The group emerged from eastern Afghanistan in late 2014 and was made up of breakaway fighters of the Pakistan Taliban and local fighters who pledged allegiance to the late ISIL leader, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi .

The group has since established a fearsome reputation for acts of brutality.

Murat Aslan, a military analyst and former Turkish army colonel, said ISIL’s Afghanistan affiliate is known for its “radical and tough methodologies”.

“I think their ideology inspires them in terms of selecting targets. First of all, Russia is in Syria and fighting against Daesh [ISIL] like the United States. That means they see such countries as hostile,” Aslan told Al Jazeera.

“They are now in Moscow. Previously they were in Iran, and we will see much more attacks, maybe in other capitals,” he added.

Though its membership in Afghanistan is said to have declined since a peak in about 2018, its fighters still pose one of the greatest threats to the Taliban’s authority in Afghanistan.

Previous attacks by the group

ISKP fighters claimed responsibility for the 2021 attacks outside Kabul airport that left at least 175 civilians dead, killed 13 US soldiers, and many dozens injured.

The ISIL affiliate was previously blamed for carrying out a bloody attack on a maternity ward in Kabul in May 2020 that killed 24 people, including women and infants. In November that same year, the group carried out an attack on Kabul University, killing at least 22 teachers and students.

In September 2022, the group took responsibility for a deadly suicide bombing at the Russian embassy in Kabul.

Last year, Iran blamed the group for two separate attacks on a major shrine in southern Shiraz – the Shah Cheragh – which killed at least 14 people and injured more than 40.

The US claimed that it intercepted communications confirming that the group was preparing to carry out attacks before coordinated suicide bombings in Iran in January this year killed nearly 100 people in the southeastern Iranian city of Kerman. ISKP claimed responsibility for the Kerman attacks.

Why is ISIL attacking Russia?

Defence and security analysts say the group has targeted its propaganda at Russian President Vladimir Putin in recent years over the alleged oppression of Muslims by Russia.

“Russian foreign policy has been one big red flag for ISIS [ISIL],” Michael Kugelman, director of the South Asia Institute at the Washington-based Wilson Center told Al Jazeera. “The Soviet invasion of Afghanistan, Russian actions in Chechnya, Moscow’s close relationships with the Syrian and Iranian governments, and especially the military campaigns that Russia has waged against ISIS fighters in Syria and — through Wagner Group mercenaries – in parts of Africa.”

All of that has meant that Moscow has become a focus of ISKP’s “extensive propaganda war,” said Amira Jadoon, assistant professor at Clemson University in South Carolina and co-author of, The Islamic State in Afghanistan and Pakistan: Strategic Alliances and Rivalries.

“Russia’s engagement in the global fight against ISIS and its affiliates, especially through its military operations in Syria and its efforts to establish connections with the Afghan Taliban – ISIS-K’s rival – marks Russia as a key adversary for ISIS/ISIS-K,” Jadoon told Al Jazeera.

Should the Moscow attack be “definitely attributed” to ISKP, Jadoon said, the group hopes to win support and advance “its goal to evolve into a terrorist organisation with global influence” by demonstrating that it can launch attacks within Russian territory.

“ISK [ISKP] has consistently demonstrated its ambition to evolve into a formidable regional entity … By directing its aggression towards nations such as Iran and Russia, ISK not only confronts regional heavyweights but also underscores its political relevance and operational reach on the global stage,” Jadoon said.

Kabir Taneja, a fellow at the Strategic Studies Programme of the Observer Research Foundation – a think tank based in New Delhi, India – told Al Jazeera that Russia is seen by ISIL and its affiliates as “a crusading power against Muslims”.

“Russia has been a target for ISIS and not just ISKP from the beginning,” Taneja, author of the book, The ISIS Peril, said.

“ISKP attacked [the] Russian embassy in Kabul in 2022, and over the months, Russian security agencies have upped their efforts to clamp down on pro-ISIS ecosystems both in Russia and around its borders, specifically Central Asia and the Caucusus,” he said.

In early March, Russia’s Federal Security Service, better known as the FSB, said it had thwarted an ISIL plan to attack a Moscow synagogue.

“The most compelling current motivation for ISIS-K to attack Russia is the Taliban factor. The Taliban is a bitter rival of ISIS, and ISIS views Russia as a friend of the Taliban,” said Kugelman.

Moscow’s close relations with Israel are also anathema to ISIL’s ideology, Taneja said.

“So this friction is not new ideologically, but is so tactically,” he told Al Jazeera.

There’s another factor, too: Largely away from the world’s attention, the armed group has regrouped into a formidable force after setbacks in Syria and Iran.

“ISKP in Afghanistan has grown in strength significantly … and it’s not just ISKP, ISIS in its original regions of operations, Syria and Iraq, also sees [an] uptick in operational capabilities,” Taneja said. Today, he added, it is “ideologically powerful even if not politically, tactically or strategically … that powerful any more”.

That poses a challenge for a distracted world, he said.

“How to combat this is the big question at a time when big power competition and global geopolitical churn has put counterterrorism on the back burner,” Taneja added.

How has ISIL responded?

ISKP social media channels are “jubilant” following the attack on Moscow, said Abdul Basit, a senior associate fellow at the S Rajaratnam School of International Studies, Singapore.

“They are celebrating the attack,” Basit told Al Jazeera, adding that supporters are “translating and recirculating the responsibility claim” issued by the ISIL-linked Amaq News Agency.

Basit said that ISIL’s method of operations involves amplifying a propaganda campaign in advance of large-scale attacks and this had been observed in recent anti-Russian messaging. Such attacks “add to the credibility” of armed groups, Basit explained, which then “increases the scope of their funding, recruitment and propaganda”.

More attacks are possible in Russia and elsewhere, he added, given the key role that ISIL recruits of Central Asian origin – particularly Tajiks – played when the group held territory in Syria. They have now returned to the Central Asia region and their intent to carry out attacks has now materialised in capability, Basit said.

Previous attacks in Russia

Moscow and other Russian cities have been the targets of previous attacks.

In 2002, Chechen fighters took more than 900 people hostage in a Moscow theatre, the Dubrovka, demanding the withdrawal of Russian troops from Chechnya and an end to Russia’s war on the region.

Russian special forces attacked the theatre to end the standoff and 130 people were killed, most suffocated by a gas used by security forces to leave the Chechen fighters unconscious.

The deadliest attack in Russia was the 2004 Beslan school siege which was carried out by members of a Chechen armed group seeking Chechnya’s independence from Russia. The siege killed 334 people, including 186 children.

Russia arrests another suspect in the concert hall attack that killed 144

  • Copy Link copied

`MOSCOW (AP) — A Moscow court has detained another suspect as an accomplice in the attack by gunmen on a suburban Moscow concert hall that killed 144 people in March, the Moscow City Courts Telegram channel said Saturday.

Dzhumokhon Kurbonov, a citizen of Tajikistan, is accused of providing the attackers with means of communication and financing. The judge at Moscow’s Basmanny District Court ruled that Kurbonov would be kept in custody until May 22 pending investigation and trial.

Russian state news agency RIA Novosti said Kurbonov was reportedly detained on April 11 for 15 days on the administrative charge of petty hooliganism. Independent Russian media outlet Mediazona noted that this is a common practice used by Russian security forces to hold a person in custody while a criminal case is prepared against them.

Twelve defendants have been arrested in the case, including four who allegedly carried out the attack at the Crocus City Hall concert venue, according to RIA Novosti.

Those four appeared in the same Moscow court at the end of March on terrorism charges and showed signs of severe beatings. One appeared to be barely conscious during the hearing. The court ordered that the men, all of whom were identified in the media as citizens of Tajikistan, also be held in custody until May 22.

A faction of the Islamic State group has claimed responsibility for the massacre in which gunmen shot people who were waiting for a show by a popular rock band and then set the building on fire. But Russian officials including President Vladimir Putin have persistently claimed, without presenting evidence, that Ukraine and the West had a role in the attack.

Ukraine denies involvement and its officials claim that Moscow is pushing the allegation as a pretext to intensify its fighting in Ukraine .
