The Leeds & Liverpool Canal

The canal itself is Britain’s longest, at 127 miles, and was originally used for transporting coal, stone, cloth, and other cargo after its completion in 1816.

Of course, the canal’s busy industrial heyday has now passed, but the Leeds and Liverpool Canal is still enjoyed by thousands as a brilliant way of exploring the area, reliving the past, and relaxing as the world passes by.

About Skipton, England

Skipton is the gateway to the Yorkshire Dales National Park and was voted the best place to live in the U.K. in 2014. It’s a wonderful historic market town situated in North Yorkshire, right in the heart of beautiful scenery.

It’s not hard to see why Skipton is such a popular tourist destination, with the superbly preserved 900-year old medieval Skipton Castle, famous open-air Skipton market, spectacular limestone cliffs at Malham to the west, celebrated beauty of Bolton Abbey to the east, and of course the Leeds and Liverpool Canal passing right through the centre.

Yorkshire Canals

Ratty may not have been a Yorkshire lad, but he was right: there's nothing to beat messing about on boats. And the joy of canal boating is that you don't have to learn complicated things like sailing or navigation - you can start enjoying yourself straight away.

Boating holiday on Yorkshire canals

Boating holidays

The Yorkshire canals were made for enjoyment - well of course they weren't, they were for carrying coal and grain and wool in barges - but folk two centuries ago knew how to build to last, and today's lot know a good thing when they see it. So all around more people are finding more ways to use the canals, and boating holidays are one of the best. Take your accommodation with you in a snug, cleverly planned narrow boat and in the words of Arthur Daley, the world is your lobster.

Explore the Pennine canals

  • High above the roof tops or under the hills in tunnels; alongside tumbling streams or through buzzing city centres: there's always something new round every corner. The Pennine canals have an up and at 'em quality that's still reflected in the attitudes of Yorkshire people.
  • These days you can still see people working by the canal (the best holiday occupation!) but the grimy mills have long since been turned into sought-after flats and offices.
  • The best things about a Yorkshire boating holiday are the companionship of your crew, the friendly locals, the stunning scenery, your charming narrowboat (or barge), the amazing pubs and the sheer improbability of arriving in a new place by water - and not having to find somewhere to park the car.

Enjoy this site, and enjoy planning a fantastic Yorkshire canal holiday.

Feature Spot – Yorkshire’s Bingley 5 Rise Locks

The Leeds & Liverpool Canal

With a main line of 127¼ miles, the Leeds and Liverpool Canal is easily the longest canal in Britain built by one company. (The Grand Union Canal is 10 miles longer but was a later amalgamation of a number of canals.) It links the north west seaport of Liverpool with the Aire and Calder Navigation at Leeds, forming a through route between the Irish Sea and the North Sea. The Millennium Ribble Link now provides a link via the River Ribble to the  Lancaster Canal . Extension of the western end past Liverpool Pier Head to join up with the main Dock system & River Mersey was completed in 2008.

canal signpost

From the top of Stanley Docks in Liverpool the canal leaves the city houses and streets at Litherland. Crossing the flat rich farmlands of the Lancashire plain to Parbold through numerous swing bridges, many now mechanised, then following the Douglas valley in to Wigan where it splits. The Leigh Branch heads west, often on embankments because of the amount of mining subsidence but now surrounded by greenery and nature reserves, to Leigh to meet the Bridgewater Canal .

The Leeds & Liverpool Main line from Wigan climbs north into the Pennine hills up the famous Wigan 21 locks . From here across the Pennines into Yorkshire the Leeds & Liverpool is a barge canal, built with locks 60 feet long and 14 feet wide. The canal passes the entrance to the Walton summit branch of the Lancaster Canal , now abandoned, and on through the once proud cotton towns of Blackburn and Burnley where waterside Victorian mills still stand. At Burnley the Weaver’s Triangle is worth a visit; weaving sheds, spinning mills, foundries and houses, a reminder of Burnley’s industrial heritage from the days when the town led the world in the production of cotton cloth.

Lancashire Mills near Leigh

The summit level is reached at the mile long Foulridge tunnel at a height of 487 feet above sea level amidst fine moorland scenery on the ‘backbone of England’. The reservoirs on this stretch are a reminder of the importance of water supplies for canals, this canal has always been subject to water shortages. The canal descends down the Aire Valley through remote and beautiful countryside and the market town of Skipton with its fine castle. Saltaire is a Victorian model village. Mills, comfortable stone houses and library for the workers, but no pubs! Titus Salt was a Victorian philanthropist, interested in the health and morals of his workforce for religious and efficiency reasons. The huge and impressive Bingley Five Rise Locks speeds the descent through the Yorkshire Dales and on towards the bustling city of Leeds . The junction with the Aire & Calder Navigation now houses tasteful and lively waterside developments, including the Royal Armouries Basin with lots to explore and enjoy.

company image

The Rufford branch

Linking the canal near Burscough, via the small port of Tarleton, with the River Douglas and the River Ribble it now provides access to the Lancaster Canal . Crossing the tidal River Ribble requires careful planning, many boats prefer to travel in convoy employing the services of a professional pilot.

The Pennine Ring  links to the  Rochdale Canal  or to the  Huddersfield Narrow Canal .

Broad canal, 127 miles, 93 locks, 2 tunnels, 2 weeks Liverpool to Leeds. Wigan to Leeds locks only 60ft long, but some longer narrowboats can fit, with much care, diagonally in locks. Liverpool to Wigan and Leigh Branch 72ft.

The Liverpool Canal Link

This is the extension of the canal from Stanley Dock linking the North Docks to the South Docks and passing the famous Pier Head and the ‘Three Graces’ , the Liver Building, Cunard Building and the Mersey Docks and Harbour Board Building. This involved a mile and a half of new canal with two new locks and tunnels. The flagship project was opened in 2008 at a cost of £22m.

The original canal terminus in Liverpool city centre was filled in in the 1960’s. The Stanley Dock branch gave canal access to the northern dock system but plans were put forward in the early 2000’s for the extension past the landmark Liverpool waterfront into the South Docks. The original link between the North and South dock had been lost when Georges Dock was filled in at the beginning of the 20th century to allow the building of the Three Graces. Book passage with CRT .

Yorkshire Canals

Suggested trip details below the map

The Leeds & Liverpool Canal

Definitely a canal with a split personality!

Across its summit, around Skipton and Silsden, the grandeur of the canal is matched only be the rugged pennine scenery.  The landscape of drystone walls is mirrored in the simple canal architecture.   This contrasts with the Yorkshire Canals and the monumental features of the famed Bingley Five Rise locks. Plus there is the ‘Straight Mile’ in Burnley – a high embankment crossing the Calder Valley.

The Aire & Calder Canal

Following the Aire Valley into Leeds is without doubt the finest entrance into the city, and after exploring the revitalised canal wharves, the Aire and Calder beckons.    This remains a successful commercial waterway and is becoming increasingly popular for pleasure boating.   Electrically operated locks make life easier, and the tankers and coal boats offer a reminder that canal transport still makes environmental sense.

The Rochdale Canal

Restored to the main system in 1996, the Rochdale Canal climbs out of Sowerby Bridge sheltered in the Calder Valley with intoxicating moorland scenery on either side.    Climbing steadily, the canal reaches a high point of 600 feet (the summit of the entire canal network) before dropping down to Littleborough, across the border with Lancashire.   Take a break from the locks and explore a section of the Pennine Way. Alternatively savour the Victorian heritage of fine mill towns such as Hebden Bridge and Todmorden.

Not To Be Missed

Skipton;   a fine Georgian town with Norman Castle.

Royal Armouries Museum, Leeds;   opened in 1996, this canalside museum is probably the finest example of an interactive journey through the development of weaponry down the ages.

Henry Moore Sculpture Centre, Leeds;   proving once again that not all the best galleries are in London, this centre features fine work from Moore, Barbara Hepworth and Jacob Epstein.

Tetley Brewery Wharf, Leeds;   a trip into the history of that British institution, the Pub, and the brewery tour.

Watching the world go by from a narrowboat or barge may not be the fastest way to travel, but it’s a wonderful way to discover some of the UK’s most beautiful and interesting landscapes. Canal boat trips in northern England

Standedge tunnel, west yorkshire.

Let’s start this list of the best canal trips with something truly extraordinary. Standedge Tunnel, on the Huddersfield Narrow Canal is the longest, highest, deepest canal tunnel in the UK, and you can take a guided canal boat trip inside its astonishing depths.

Boat trips into the Standedge Tunnel start from Tunnel End near the village of Marsden in West Yorkshire. They’re operated, like a few of the boat tours on this list, by the Canal and River Trust , a charity which looks after 2000 miles of inland waterways in England and Wales.

After your 30-minute journey into the tunnel, you can explore a small museum which describes the arduous building of the tunnel in the late 18th century, its decline when the railways came, how it was abandoned for decades and was finally brought back to life in 2001 thanks to a dedicated team of volunteers.

Read more about visiting Standedge Tunnel

Skipton, North Yorkshire

Skipton is a gorgeous market town at the gateway to the Yorkshire Dales. The Leeds and Liverpool canal arrived in Skipton in 1773, carrying coal, cloth and other cargo across the country from the ports at Liverpool and Hull (via the Aire and Calder Navigation).

Skipton is surrounded by beautiful rolling countryside, and gliding through it on a canal boat trip is the perfect way to see it. From Skipton’s pretty marina in the centre of town, you can take a 1 hour trip to discover the canal, or 2 hour trips to enjoy an afternoon tea on the water.

If you’re thinking you might like to skipper your own boat for a canal boat holiday, a day cruise on the wide, lock-free stretch of the Leeds and Liverpool canal south of Skipton is a good place to perfect your skills. There’s even a handily-placed canalside pub for lunch.

The team at Skipton Boat Trips will give you all the tuition you need to take the helm of your hire boat with confidence, even if you’re a complete novice. If you love it, you can hire a boat for a short break canal holiday or a full week or more, depending on how many miles of waterways you want to explore.

Saltaire, West Yorkshire

15 miles south east of Skipton on the Leeds and Liverpool canal, you’ll find Saltaire. Saltaire is a picturesque model village built by Sir Titus Salt to house the workers from his enormous mill in hygienic, morally sound and intellectually improving surroundings.

Salts Mill and the village surrounding it are a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of my favourite places to visit; the mill now holds an art gallery, interesting shops (including the most amazing bookshop) and cafes. Across the river, there’s a lovely park, and down on the canal you can buy ice creams from a barge and take 30-minute boat trips on the narrowboat Titus . Trips run from the end of March to the end of October.

Read more: visiting Salts Mill and Saltaire

Manchester owes a lot of its existence to canals. Canals allowed Manchester’s industrialists to bring raw materials into the city, along with coal to power the machines that would turn raw cotton into finished cloth.

At first, products were transported out of Manchester by barge on the Bridgewater Canal or later by rail, but this didn’t provide enough capacity for Manchester’s factories and mills.

This all changed when the Manchester Ship Canal opened in 1894, providing a wide channel all the way to the sea at Liverpool. Manchester became Britain’s 3rd busiest port, despite being 40 miles from the sea.

Taking a guided canal boat trip is a great way to understand the history of Manchester. Boat trips run along the Manchester Ship Canal and the navigable parts of the River Irwell, passing Manchester United’s Old Trafford stadium, Imperial War Museum North and the Lowry, plus the old Pomona docks. You can book your Manchester river and canal tour here .

Burscough, Lancashire

After the drama of the route across the Pennines, the Leeds and Liverpool canal spends its last few miles before arriving in Liverpool meandering across the west Lancashire landscape. This part of northern England is full of small towns and huge skies, and spending a couple of hours on the water is the perfect way to see it.

Lancashire Canal Cruises operate two cruises from Burscough, a small town near Ormskirk and Southport.

Ashton under Lyne, Greater Manchester

Ashton under Lyne is just to the east of Manchester, and the town’s Portland canal basin marks the point where the Huddersfield Narrow Canal and the Peak Forest Canal meet and the Ashton Canal begins its journey to Manchester city centre.

The 1800s canal warehouse at Portland Basin has been turned into a lively family museum with recreations of a 1920s street and the interior of a normal family home. There are also exhibitions on the history of Ashton’s three canals. Outside the museum, the Tameside Canal Boat Trust operate seasonal trips on the Ashton Canal on their narrowboat Still Waters .

Northwich, Cheshire

Together with the Falkirk Wheel in Scotland, the Anderton Boat Lift is one of the most impressive sights on Britain’s canal network and is the world’s oldest working boat lift. The boat lift was built in 1875 to lift cargo boats 15 metres up in the air from the River Weaver to the Trent and Mersey Canal and is still operational today.

You can experience the “cathedral of the canals” for yourself with a canal boat trip on the Edwin Clark , named after the engineer who built this amazing structure. The Anderton Boat Lift is having some refurbishment work done at the moment but boat trips are expected to resume after Easter 2023.

Ellesmere Port, Cheshire

The transhipment dock at Ellesmere Port, where the River Mersey, Manchester Ship Canal and Shropshire Union Canal all meet, used to be a noisy, bustling spot at the height of the Industrial Revolution, but it’s now a peaceful spot for a family day out. The warehouse is now home to one of the Canal and River Trust’s three museums. The museum is a fascinating place to visit, with regularly-changing exhibitions, special events and themed “Canal Sundays” during the summer months.

Wirral Community Narrowboat Trust run occasional canal boat trips from the National Waterways Museum at Ellesmere Port. If there’s a group of you, you might want to hire one of their barges and skippers for a longer trip – they have a range of full day and short day options from £125, some of which stop off at canalside pubs for lunch.

Canal boat trips in central England

Cromford, derbyshire.

Cromford is a village on the edge of the Peak District and home to one of the great wonders of the industrial revolution, the huge Cromford Mills complex. Built in 1771 by the inventor and industrialist Sir Richard Arkwright, Cromford Mills was the first successful water-powered cotton spinning mill.

Like Sir Titus Salt in Saltaire, Arkwright built a village to house his workers, and today Cromford is a lovely place to visit, with shops, cafes, a large mill pond and quaint streets. The UNESCO-listed mill has a museum about the mills, plus craft workshops and more shops and cafes.

The 14.5 mile long Cromford Canal was critical to the success of Arkwright’s mills, but it also carried people! An enterprising man named Nathaniel Wheatcroft started the first “fly” boat service from here, carrying passengers to Nottingham twice a week.

Boat trips from Cromford Basin run on Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays and take a 2 hour route from Cromford Wharf to Leawood Pumphouse and back on board the narrowboat Birdswood . There’s also an occasional option for a premium cruise which includes refreshments and a guided tour of the historic places to visit along the route, including Leawood Pumphouse and High Peak Junction, where you can see the oldest extant railway workshop in the world. You can book both the regular and the premium tour on the Friends of Cromford Canal’s website .

Lincoln, Lincolnshire

The oldest canal in Britain is the Fosse Dyke Canal, which was built by the Romans to link Lincoln to the River Trent, and from there to the North Sea. Lincoln is a beautiful cathedral city, and spending a relaxing hour on this historic canal is a lovely way to see the wider area.

You can take a guided boat trip along the Fosse Dyke on the Brayford Belle which operates between Easter and October each year. The Brayford Belle has two decks, the lower one with central heating and the upper one with outside seating and a fantastic view.

Birmingham famously has more miles of canals than Venice or Amsterdam – over 35 miles of them. The canals arrived in Birmingham in 1768, and grew to a peak of 160 miles of canal across the city. Canals were essential to fuel Birmingham’s growth during the industrial revolution, bringing in raw materials and coal, and sending out finished goods.

You can explore Birmingham’s history by taking a canal boat trip with Brindley Cruises or Sherborne Wharf . Routes cover part of the original James Brindley Canal, a section of Telford’s New Main Line (revolutionary for its time) and Gas Street Basin. If you’re visiting Birmingham at Christmas, you can even take a “Search for Santa” canal trip.

Stratford upon Avon, Warwickshire

The Stratford-upon-Avon canal runs from the outskirts of Birmingham to the heart of historic Stratford, Shakespeare’s home town. The canal was built to transport coal from the Midlands down to Oxford and London, without needing to use the network through Birmingham. The route was near-derelict by the 1930s, but was rescued thanks to the efforts of the Inland Waterways Association, the National Trust and local volunteers.

Today, the 25 miles of the Stratford-upon-Avon canal is navigable again and visitors to Stratford can take 40 minute canal boat tours along the canal and the River Avon . Stratford’s resident swans often follow the boat, and there’s a good chance you’ll also see tufted ducks, herons, coots and perhaps a kingfisher too.

Dudley, West Midlands

Just as at Standedge, the main attraction for canal boat trips in Dudley is going underground. The Dudley Tunnel is the UK’s second-longest tunnel, but unlike Standedge, it isn’t continuous and instead emerges at points into canal basins.

The rock in this area is particularly rich in fossils and other geological features. The area was once heavily mined for its limestone, creating amazing caverns that the boat trip passes through. One of these, named the Singing Cavern, is even available for weddings!

Canal boat trips into Dudley Tunnel are run by the Dudley Canal and Tunnel Trust . You can just turn up for the regular 45 minute trips or book online for longer trips. While you’re in the area, don’t miss a visit to the nearby Black Country Living Museum , which has a canal area featuring a collection of historic boats.

Banbury, Oxfordshire

The Oxford Canal meanders 78 miles from just north of Coventry, down through Rugby and Banbury and on until it meets the River Thames at Oxford.

While there are lots of river cruises on offer in Oxford itself, you’ll need to go to Banbury for canal boat trips on the Oxford Canal, unless you want a self-drive boat. Tooleys Boatyard Trust in Banbury offer regular, 40-minute canal boat trips on their day boat the Dancing Duck . Their Facebook page is the best place to check for boat trip times and dates.

Cotswolds, Gloucestershire

The Cotswolds are more famous these days for picturesque villages and trickling streams in a rolling, rural landscape, but there are canals here too. The Stroudwater Navigation opened in 1779 to link Stroud to the River Severn and from there to the sea. Ten years later, the Thames and Severn Canal opened, extending the route to the River Thames at Lechlade and providing a cross-country route.

The restored Ebley Wharf on the Stroudwater Navigation

Both the Stroudwater Navigation and the Thames and Severn Canal fell into decline, with sections being filled in, but the Cotswolds Canal Trust have worked tirelessly to bring parts back into use. It’s expected that the Stroudwater Navigation will join up with the national waterways network again in 2025.

The Cotswolds Canal Trust run canal boat trips on the navigable parts of the Stroudwater Navigation at the Saul visitor centre, Ebley Wharf and the Wallbridge Lock visitor centre. At Lechlade, you can take a boat trip on the River Thames from St John’s Lock to see the start of the old Thames and Severn Canal.

Canal boat trips in southern England

The Regent’s Canal in London is an 8.6-mile link between the Grand Union Canal near Paddington Station to the Limehouse Basin and River Thames near Canary Wharf.

The canal weaves its way prettily through some of North London’s most attractive and interesting areas, including Little Venice, Regent’s Park, Camden Town and the Coal Drops Yard area of Kings Cross.

Canal boat trips on the Regent’s Canal tend to run between Little Venice and Camden Town. On a tour with the London Waterbus Company you’ll be entertained by a commentary, which points out key sights along the route, including London Zoo, Maida Hill Tunnel and the homes of the rich and famous.

Bradford on Avon, Wiltshire

The Kennet and Avon Canal is one of the UK canal network’s most popular waterways. Stretching from the Bristol channel, through the beautiful city of Bath then on through Devizes, Hungerford, Newbury to the Thames at Reading, it’s an outstanding route, passing through quintessentially English countryside.

One of the most beautiful towns on the Kennet and Avon is Bradford-on-Avon. Bradford-on-Avon is 10 miles from Bath and the tow paths are a popular walk between the two. At Bradford-on-Avon you can take a canal boat trip on the impressively large Barbara McLellan , a 65ft wide-beam boat that seats 40 and is operated by the Kennet and Avon Canal Trust.

From Bradford-on-Avon, the Barbara McLellan sails west to Avoncliff Aqueduct and east to Widbrook winding hole. There are also a range of themed cruises throughout the season.

The Kennet and Avon Canal Trust have four other boats along the canal and also offer canal boat trips in Devizes , Hungerford , Newbury and Reading .

Canal boat trips in Wales

Llangollen, denbighshire.

The Llangollen Canal in North Wales is one of the most scenic canal trips in the UK, but you’ll need a good head for heights! The amazing Pontcysyllte Aqueduct soars over the valley of the River Dee and is the longest and highest canal aqueduct in the world. It was designed by the famous engineer Thomas Telford, who was also involved in building Standedge Tunnel.

You can walk along the tow path to see the view from the aqueduct, but for the full Pontcysyllte experience, complete with checking out the sheer drop from the side of the boat on the canal side, Llangollen Wharf offer both motor and horse-drawn canal trips over the aqueduct.

The 5 mile route can be done in either direction, starting at Llangollen or Froncysyllte (near the aqueduct). The journey takes two hours; for an extra cost you can enjoy afternoon tea onboard. At the end of the trip, a courtesy bus will take you back to where you started.

Brecon, Powys

The peaceful Monmouthshire and Brecon Canal (also known as the Mon and Brec) is one of the UK’s most scenic routes. 35 miles are currently navigable, and many of those are within the Brecon Beacons National Park.

Things weren’t always so quiet and serene around here though; the canal transported coal, stone and iron ore from the Welsh hillsides down to the iron works at Blaenavon (now a museum and UNESCO World Heritage site ) and other industrial sites in the area. Cruising along the canal today you can still see traces of its heritage including wharves and lime kilns.

If you’re visiting this lovely part of Wales, Dragonfly Cruises have public canal boat trips departing from Brecon canal basin and including a journey over the Brynich Aqueduct which takes the Mon and Brec over the River Usk. They can also provide a skipper and guide for a canal trip through the area’s picturesque villages.

Canal boat trips in Scotland

Inverness, highlands.

The Caledonian Canal runs for 60 miles across Scotland, from Inverness to Corpach near Fort William, connecting the lochs of the Great Glen; Loch Dochfour, Loch Ness, Loch Oich and Loch Lochy. The man-made connections between the lochs were built by Thomas Telford and opened in the early 19th century.

You can take a combined cruise of the Caledonian Canal and Loch Ness by joining a boat trip at Dochgarroch Lock. The trip will take you through the locks and on to Loch Douchfour, past the old Bona Lighthouse and into Loch Ness as far as Urquhart Castle. You can book online through online ticket seller Get Your Guide .

The Falkirk Wheel is one of the most impressive feats of engineering on the whole UK canal network. Opened in 2002, the Wheel is a rotating boat lift, the only one of its kind in the world. It connects the Forth and Clyde Canal with the Union Canal.

The best way to see the Falkirk Wheel is to take a spin on it. Canal boat trips on the Falkirk Wheel take around 50 minutes. First you’ll go into the canal basin, then enter the Wheel’s gondola, ready to be lifted into the air as the Wheel rotates.

At the top, you’ll sail along the aqueduct, through the Roughcastle Tunnel and to the start of the Union Canal. The boat will turn round and take you back to the Wheel for another spin, this time back down to the canal basin.

If day trips aren’t enough for you, there are lots of companies offering canal boat hire, either to stay put and use the boat as a base, or to explore the UK’s miles of navigable waterways at your own pace on a narrow boat holiday.

VRBO has narrow boats, house boats and barges for rent with all the comforts of home, while specialist hire firms like Waterways Holidays have canal boat hire across the country. There are lots of local companies as well; if you’re interested in a particular starting point, you might like to talk to a local specialist who can advise you on canal routes and the best places of interest to see along the way.

Have you taken one of these canal boat trips, or have I missed out your favourite? Let me know in the comments.

A Great shame you did not include The Horse-Drawn Barge in Tiverton Devon as it is now one of the last Horse-Drawn Barges in Great Britain and operates Trips along the very beautiful Grand Western Canal.

Thanks Philip, that sounds amazing, I’ll have to check it out next time I’m in the south west 🙂

Canals could 'disappear' without more investment

T he charity which maintains Yorkshire's canal network has said that the historic waterways could "disappear" if more funding was not made available to repair them.

Sean McGinley, the regional director of the Canal and River Trust (CRT), said the 250-year-old infrastructure was "creaking at the seams".

The organisation has called on the new Labour government to increase investment in the transport routes that once powered the Industrial Revolution.

A spokesperson from the Department for Environment Food and Rural Affairs said the CRT "receives an annual grant of £52.6m to support their maintenance and development."

The canals were mostly built in the 19th Century to transport goods by barge, but after their function was superseded by the railways, were predominantly used for leisure boating.

Mr McGinley said Yorkshire's waterways faced challenges such as broken locks and bridges.

"They need a lot of looking after" he said.

"Moving parts need maintaining, swing bridges need to swing. We need funding to pay for materials to help maintain the structures."

Under the previous Conservative government, it was agreed that CRT would be given £400m from 2027 for maintenance over the next decade.

This grant was reduced from the £740m that was handed to the charity 15 years ago.

"We need to fill that gap," continued Mr McGinley.

"We need to speak to government and get that funding back again.

"The risk is that the canal system steadily declines and we struggle even more to keep the canals open.

"The last thing we want to see is closures. It would be a tragic loss."

In Yorkshire there are canals passing through popular visitor destinations such as Hebden Bridge, Skipton and Saltaire.

Ian Clarke, director of boat hire business Pennine Cruisers, has worked on the Leeds and Liverpool Canal for 49 years.

He described the decline of conditions in that time as "soul destroying".

"It is literally a daily conversation of how to plan, because we don't know if there are going to be bridge repairs or swing repairs," he said.

"There are leaks, you don't know whether you're going to get your boats back.

"It's just hard work, and it shouldn't be. I'm gutted."

'Rock bottom'

Rachel Ballett, 58, has been boating on the canal network across the UK since the 1970s.

She has lived on her current boat for just over two years and is now moored on the Leeds and Liverpool Canal.

"I'm definitely noticing a north-south divide," she said.

"Low water levels are a struggle. Lock gates aren't looked after then water leaks through.

"Paddles don't work, you can't close the gates fully.

"There's rubbish stuck in gates, rubbish gets stuck around your propeller."

Earlier this month, Ms Ballett's vessel was among 20 canal boats stranded in Hebden Bridge after a faulty lock was left open.

She had been stuck further up the Rochdale Canal days earlier because of low water levels and "trapped" in Lancashire because of repair work before then.

Ms Ballett described the maintenance of canals in Yorkshire as "woeful."

"It's very difficult to navigate, to operate the locks, there are an awful lot of locks not working properly and leaking.

"Things are approaching rock bottom and the government has got to help".

Mr McGinley added: "We need to get the canal system working reliably.

"Investment would bring more work into the canals and make them work properly everyday."

Top Pacific Coastal FAQs

Where do Pacific Coastal cruises go?

Pacific Coastal cruises sail between Los Angeles and Vancouver, Canada.

Ports between Los Angeles and Vancouver include San Francisco and Victoria on Vancouver Island. You could also enjoy a day in Astoria, Oregon, or an overnight stay in San Francisco, depending on the itinerary.

Both of Celebrity’s itineraries include days at sea to enjoy the ship, relax in the spa, bask by the pool, and look out for marine life.

Where do cruises depart from on the West Coast?

Cruises depart from Los Angeles on one-way northbound voyages, ending in Vancouver, or from Vancouver on southbound voyages, ending in Los Angeles.

What should I pack?

The Pacific Northwest can include considerable variations in climate between Los Angeles and Vancouver. A light waterproof jacket is a good idea for the northernmost ports, as are layers. The weather can transform in an instant, especially in San Francisco, which is prone to fog that can melt away in the sunshine. Pack good walking shoes, too, as there are multiple opportunities to explore beautiful landscapes and cities on foot.

Bring a pair of binoculars as the marine life in the Northwest is spectacular, and you stand a good chance of spotting whales and dolphins.

Throughout the ship, casual resort wear, sundresses, shorts, polos, or button-downs are appropriate, paired with sandals, low heels, and loafers. In main and specialty dining, we ask guests to refrain from wearing swimsuits, see-through cover-ups or robes, bare feet, tank tops, T-shirts, and baseball caps.

Smart Casual attire is required for entry to main dining, specialty dining, and the theater. Smart Casual means you look comfortable yet tasteful in a dress, skirt, long pants, or jeans with a stylish top or button-down. Shorts and flip-flops are not considered Smart Casual.

Each itinerary features at least one to two “formal” nights that we call Evening Chic. Evening Chic means you dress to impress, glamorous and sophisticated in your own way, with a cocktail dress, skirt, slacks, or designer jeans, an elegant dress top, or blazer—some guests even pack a tuxedo or gown for onboard photos.

The daily program, delivered to your stateroom and available at the Guest Relations Desk, will be your guide to the correct attire each evening. If you do not wish to participate in Evening Chic, Smart Casual attire is acceptable for dining and attending the theater.

Are there any ports of call outside of the U.S.?

Yes, both of our Pacific Coast itineraries include ports of call outside of the U.S. You’ll visit Victoria and Vancouver in Canada.

When is the best time to cruise?

The best time to explore the West Coast is spring, summer, and fall, when the weather is generally good. In spring and fall, places like Los Angeles are pleasant, rather than hot, and you should have ideal conditions for hiking, strolling around cities, and even sunbathing. Early fall is another beautiful time to visit, when the days are still warm and the trees in the coastal forests are beginning to take on their fall colors.

How long are cruises along the West Coast?

Our cruises along the West Coast last for six nights.

What types of landscapes and sights can I expect to see during the cruise?

On any Pacific Coastal cruise, you’ll see a wonderful combination of vibrant cities and beautiful landscapes.

San Francisco is famous for many things: the Golden Gate Bridge, vintage cable cars, Alcatraz, museums, and Fisherman’s Wharf. Pretty Victoria is known for its colonial charm and the glorious colors of Butchart Gardens, while Vancouver is surrounded by water, with a backdrop of often snow-capped mountains.

You’ll have a chance to be immersed in nature on these cruises. Astoria, on the edge of the forested, misty Pacific Northwest, is a great place for cycling and hiking, as well as learning about the epic expedition of Lewis and Clark. In contrast, California’s Napa Valley is the place to head for rolling hills, lush scenery, and wine tasting.

What kind of excursions can I book?

We offer a wide range of excursions to suit every taste. You can go whale watching from Vancouver Island and cycling in Astoria. From San Francisco, you could take a tour to Sausalito and Muir Woods, or to Sonoma Wine Country for a tasting. If you choose an itinerary with an overnight in San Francisco, you could join a nighttime city tour with dinner in Chinatown.

Essentially, you will find a shore excursion to suit your tastes, whether your interest is history and architecture, wildlife, food and wine, or nature and physical activity.

How many days at sea will I have? What is there to do on board?

Our Pacific Coastal itineraries each have two days at sea, giving you plenty of time to enjoy the ship.

You’ll find a wonderful choice of activities during these sea days. Relax by the pool or join a workout class in the Fitness Center. Listen to live music or try a wine tasting. Sample delightful dishes from all the different restaurants on board, which range from poolside made-to-order burgers and salads to delicious sushi, contemporary Italian, and clean cuisine in Blu. In the evenings, you’ll find glittering entertainment in The Theatre, as well as late-night dancing.

Elevate your experience at The Retreat® , which gives you suite accommodation and access to a luxurious lounge as well as the fine dining restaurant Luminae at The Retreat.

What is there to do on the ship?

You’ll find no shortage of things to do on board your luxurious Celebrity ship. Sunbathe by the pool, relax in a bubbling hot tub, join a class in the Fitness Center, or indulge in a treatment in the spa.

Enjoy exploring all the different dining options, from made-to-order burgers and salads by the pool to French classics and a delightful 3D cartoon animation in Le Petit Chef, and steaks and seafood in the elegant Tuscan Grille. Elevate your experience to The Retreat and you can enjoy fine dining in Luminae, as well as suite accommodation and access to an exclusive lounge.

On Edge-Series ships, the Magic Carpet, suspended over the side of the ship, gives you uninterrupted sea views and is the perfect place to sit with a coffee or cocktail, enjoying the sea air. Or spend part of your Panama Canal transit in the Sunset Bar, at the aft of the ship, for wonderful views of the ships following you.

Beppu Japan Asia Water Exotics

Beppu, Japan

Backed by steep hills and mountains on the eastern coast of Kyushu Island, Beppu is known as Japan’s top hot spring resort city. Home to more than 2,000 hot springs, this picturesque city gives you a chance to experience its hot springs, mud baths, steam baths and even traditional Japanese black sand baths. To top it off, eight unique hot springs, collectively named Onsen Hells, offer entertainingly distinctive attractions. On chilly days, visitors are treated to the otherworldly view of steam rising throughout the city. Since Beppu is famously popular within Japan as a resort getaway, it’s an ideal place to rub elbows with Japanese travelers.

Bluff New Zealand Water Lighthouse Cliff

Bluff, New Zealand

Located on the southern tip of New Zealand’s South Island, Bluff is one of the oldest European settlements in New Zealand and is a gateway to Stewart Island and Invercargill, the capital of the Southland region. Bon vivants won’t want to miss the chance to sample deep-water Bluff oysters, grown in the cold waters of Foveaux Strait and recognized as some of the best in the world. Stewart Island is a natural paradise with 85% of the island designated a national park, while Invercargill charms visitors with Victorian, Edwardian and art deco architecture and several museums. Farther north, the Fiordland National Park is awe-inspiring with glass-like alpine lakes and spectacular fjords. Closer to port, Bluff Maritime Museum features exhibits on oystering, Bluff Harbour and local history.

Castro Chile South America Church

Castro (Chiloé Island), Chile

Discover the pastoral beauty of Chile’s Chiloé Archipelago and lose yourself in the charming villages on Chiloé Island, where the port of Castro is the largest town and island capital. Here you’ll find one of the 16 wooden churches built by Jesuit and Franciscan Catholics from the 17th to 19th centuries that together compose a UNESCO World Heritage site. Castro is also fairly close to Chiloé National Park, where you can find hiking trails to suit all levels of fitness. If you want to load up on carbs before you go, be sure to have some potatoes – varieties grown on Chiloé Island are among the oldest cultivated tubers in the world.

Coron Philippines Islands Water Asia

Coron, Philippines

Situated in the northern region of the island province of Palawan – often billed as one of the best island destinations in the world – Coron is blessed with towering limestone karsts, gorgeous beaches and incredible coral reefs. You can explore old-growth rainforests, snorkel in picturesque lagoons and even dive World War II wrecks. Kayangan Lake offers sweeping views of limestone towers draped in lush vegetation, and visitors are welcome to swim and snorkel in the crystal-clear waters. You’ll quickly understand why this mountain lake is among the most photographed places in the Philippines. Just a short drive from the port, the mangrove-shrouded Maquinit Hot Springs is one of the few saltwater hot springs in the world and is the perfect location to take a restorative dip.

Djupivogur Iceland Mountains River

Djupivogur, Iceland

A model town for slow living, Djupivogur is big on serenity and scenery. It sits on a long fjord at the southern edge of East Iceland and a pyramid-shaped basalt mountain rises up behind the town. Some of Iceland’s must-visit glacial wonders are within reach – Jokulsarlon, a glacial lagoon, and the breathtaking Hoffellsjokull Glacier. Closer to port, excellent hiking trails are in abundance and the Bulandsnes Bird Reserve is a popular choice due to the peninsula’s rich birdlife. A nearby open-air artwork is also a claim to fame: named the Eggs of Merry Bay, the installation of 34 large-scale granite eggs represents bird species that nest in the area. Just a short boat ride away, the uninhabited, nature-rich island of Papey is a popular destination known for puffins, guillemots and other seabirds.

Gatun Lake Panama Exotic Bird Jungle

Gatun Lake, Panama

Roughly the size of the island of Barbados, the expansive Gatun Lake was created during the construction of the Panama Canal. Considered part of the Panama Canal system, Gatun Lake’s primary function is to hold sufficient water for canal passage and for use in the canal’s locks during dry spells, but it pulsates with biodiversity. Wildlife such as sloths, capuchin and howler monkeys, iguanas, and toucans now thrive in lush pockets around the lake and manatee sightings are common. Set off on a safari boating adventure, a canopy tour or even a kayaking adventure to take in the area’s lush flora and unique fauna. Chagres National Park is also within reach, home to an indigenous Emberá tribe and their village.

Heimaey Iceland Island Water

Heimaey, Iceland

The largest of the Westman Islands and the only one that is inhabited, Heimaey sits just four miles off the southern coast of Iceland but seems worlds away with its steep moss-covered cliffs, multihued volcanic rocks and abundant summer population of puffins. Still considered one of Iceland’s undiscovered gems, Heimaey beguiles visitors with its dramatic scenery and otherworldly atmosphere. Volcano and lava hikes abound, and cruising around the island reveals sea caves, lava formations, the famed Elephant Rock formation and prime whale watching. In the summer, you’re likely to spot puffins – the island is an important Atlantic puffin nesting habitat, with the Westman Islands serving as home to the world’s largest Atlantic puffin colony. Stop by the Eldheimar Museum, built around one of the houses buried in the 1973 eruption, for a look at the island’s volcanic past.

Kingston, Jamaica

Kingston (Port Royal), Jamaica

Kumamoto Yatsushiro Japan Cherry Blossom Temple

Kumamoto (Yatsushiro), Japan

Located on the island of Kyushu, Kumamoto has long been one of the most influential cities in the region. The city is renowned for its castle, a beautiful samurai fortress that takes you on an intriguing 400-year historical journey. Those in need of a refreshing escape should head to Ueki Hot Springs, which has been inviting visitors to soak up the therapeutic benefits of its silky alkaline water since 1895. For a relaxing stroll, visit Suizenji Jojuen Park, which dates to the 1600s and features traditional Japanese gardens, shrines and a teahouse. Kumamoto happens to be a bit of a foodie city too. Try Kumamoto ramen, a local spin on the dish that features a creamier pork broth and is topped with fried garlic chips.

Limerick Ireland Castle

Limerick (Shannon), Ireland

On the banks of the Shannon River, Shannon is an ideal gateway to the medieval castles, verdant landscapes and cities of western Ireland. Nearby, the cultural heritage and history of Limerick beckon. The 13th-century King John’s Castle; the iconic Milk Market, one of the oldest markets in Ireland; the 12th-century St. Mary’s Cathedral; and the picture-perfect village of Adare with its thatched cottages are all top choices. Walk the coastal pathways of the spectacular Cliffs of Moher, a UNESCO Global Geopark that also includes the fossil-rich limestone landscape of the Burren. The 15th-century Bunratty Castle, which offers beautiful views of the surrounding countryside, provides a fascinating look at how the lords and ladies of the era lived.

Sao Francisco do Sul Brazil Beach Coast Water

São Francisco do Sul, Brazil

One of Brazil’s oldest towns, São Francisco do Sul was founded in the early 16th century and shows off its history in its cobblestone streets and colonial buildings, many of which are listed on the national historic registry. As you sail toward the island, enjoy some of the best views of the town, which showcase pastel homes with arched windows and elegant balconies, while the twin towers of the old church hover above the historic city center. Home to the only museum of boats in Brazil, the Old Town reveals the country’s seafaring history. Nearby are miles of beaches and coves where you can spend the day swimming and soaking in the sun.

Seydisfjordur Iceland Small Town Mountain

Seydisfjordur, Iceland

Squarely in the middle of the Eastfjords and literally located at the base of a long and narrow fjord, picturesque Seydisfjordur quickly makes an impression on visitors upon arrival. It’s at the heart of some of Iceland’s most unsung treasures. Waterfalls, mountains, fjords and peaceful hiking trails stretch out all around. Discover the local flora and fauna at Skalanes Nature Reserve, which is home to diverse wildlife such as reindeer, arctic foxes and more than 40 different species of birds, or soak in soothing geothermal waters at Vok Nature Baths. Seydisfjordur features ornate wooden architecture with a Scandinavian influence and boasts a flourishing arts scene too. You won’t want to miss two iconic photo opportunities – the quaint Blue Church and the Rainbow Road that leads there.

Szczecin Poland European Small Town

Szczecin, Poland

Lively Szczecin, one of Poland’s largest cities and the capital of the West Pomerania region, has endured a colorful and multifaceted history that’s revealed in its architecture. Art nouveau mansions, ornate gothic-style buildings and baroque-style gates and fountains coexist with new glass and steel structures being erected such as the award-winning Szczecin Philharmonic Hall, which appears to glow with its innovatively lit glass façade. Szczecin’s Old Town is an excellent starting point – it’s full of cafés, bustling restaurants, and top attractions such as the Castle of the Pomeranian Dukes, the Waly Chrobrego elevated riverfront promenade and several museums. With parks aplenty, Szczecin is also known for being green and lush. The Jasne Blonia Square and neighboring Kasprowicz Park are the most popular, and the nearby Szmaragdowe Lake features an observation deck that offers lovely views of the Lower Oder River and Szczecin.

Taranto Italy Mediterranean Small Town

Taranto, Italy

A bit off the tourist circuit – delightfully so – the hidden treasure of Taranto in the Puglia region possesses renowned Greek and Roman history dating back to the Spartans when they founded it in the 8th century BCE. Known as the City of Two Seas, it straddles the Ionian Sea and Mare Piccolo, the large lagoon behind its Old Town. The Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Taranto is a major draw, one of Italy’s most important archaeological museums that houses one of the largest collections of artifacts from the Magna Graecia era. Taranto’s 11th-century cathedral is the gem of the Old Town and among Puglia’s oldest Romanesque buildings. The city is more recently famous as the site of one of the most pivotal World War II naval battles. Don’t miss the chance to sample orecchiette, Puglia’s signature pasta; freshly caught seafood; and the deliciously creamy mozzarella at one of the many fabulous restaurants.
