The Perfect Catalina Island Day Trip: How to Spend One Day

* This article contains affiliate links, which help run this site at no extra cost to you.

TL;DR: The perfect Catalina Island day trip begins with a ferry ride to the scenic town of Avalon, where you can take golf carts to nearby viewpoints, snorkel in the clear waters, kayak along the coves, and indulge in fresh lobster rolls—all for around $200-$300 per person.

Catalina Island boasts 75 square miles of hilly terrain, beautiful beaches, kelp forests, and one of California’s most popular multi-day treks – the 38.5-mile Trans-Catalina Trail.

The island also happens to be one of the best day trips to do in Southern California since it’s only 22 miles off the coast and only about an hour by ferry from Los Angeles and Orange County.

The perfect Catalina Island Day Trip

It wasn’t until a couple of years ago that I finally made the trip to Santa Catalina Island myself. It had always been on my radar, as many of the islands off the coast of California have been for years, but I just never made it happen.

That is until I found myself with an extra day after a trip to Disneyland . I quickly decided to finally experience Catalina Island once I realized how easy it was to get to the island.

Based on that trip, this is my full itinerary for the perfect Catalina Island day trip for anyone who is also looking for a unique and easy day trip.

By the end of it, you’ll know exactly what to expect with a day trip to Catalina Island, how to get there, and what to do to soak up the best that this island has to offer.

How to Get to Catalina Island

Unless you know someone who has a sailboat or helicopter, the easiest way to get to Catalina Island is by ferry. There are two boat companies that take passengers to the island – Catalina Express and Catalina Flyer .

The vast majority of people visiting the island will take the high-speed ferry with Catalina Express since it leaves from more locations, including San Pedro, Long Beach, and Dana Point and travels to both Avalon and Two Harbors.

The Catalina Flyer, on the other hand, only leaves from Newport Beach.

how to get to catalina island

Here are the options for doing a trip to Catalina Island from the mainland.

From Los Angeles

Long Beach is the most popular and active port for traveling to Catalina by ferry. The ferries that leave from the Long Beach Port take about an hour and only travel to Avalon.

During the off-season, there are only two departures and returns per day. This is when I went so I just had to be mindful of ferry times to make sure I didn’t miss the only late afternoon ferry back to the island.

You also have to squeeze in a bit more if you’re trying to do a day trip during the off-season since the earliest ferry leaves around 7:00 am from Long Beach and starts its return from Avalon at 4:15 pm.

During the summer, you’ll find up to 6-9 departures and returns per day so you can be more flexible with your day trip to Catalina Island. Shoulder seasons can fluctuate so you’ll need to check the ferry schedules ahead of time before planning your trip.

Get your FREE Los Angeles Mini Guide + a printable checklist with 100+ things to do in the city!

San Pedro has fewer departures and returns but it’s also the only port with ferries that go to Two Harbors as well as Avalon. And similar to the Long Beach Port, the number of ferries leaving and returning per day depends on the time of year.

In the off-season, it’s usually only a couple of departures and returns per day and that goes up to around 5-6 to Avalon and 7-9 to Two Harbors in the high season.

The ferry from San Pedro to Avalon takes about an hour and 15 minutes and the ferry from San Pedro to Two Harbors takes about two hours.

Book the Catalina Express from Long Beach or San Pedro here .

From Orange County

If you’re coming from Orange County or San Diego, you’ll probably want to leave from Dana Point. The ferries from Dana Point travel to Avalon and there are only a couple of departures and returns year-round.

The ferry from Dana Point takes about an hour and a half one way to get to Catalina Island.

Newport Beach

The ferry that leaves from Newport Beach is run by the Catalina Flyer instead of the Catalina Express. There is only one departure and return per day from this port and it only travels to Avalon. The journey takes just over an hour.

How Much Does the Catalina Ferry Cost?

Round trip tickets for the Catalina Express are $74.50 for adults, $67.50 for seniors 55+, and $59 for children under 12. You can book them here .

Round trip tickets for the Catalina Flyer are $70 for adults, $65 for seniors 60+, and $53 for children 12 and under.

Visiting Avalon vs Two Harbors

To keep things simple, I put together this Catalina day trip itinerary based on starting your day in Avalon. There are a few reasons for this.

First off, most of the ferries that travel to Catalina Island only go to Avalon and back (with the exception of the San Pedro ferries), so you have a lot more choices if you’re doing a day trip to Avalon.

Secondly, there’s a lot more to do in and around downtown Avalon compared to the more remote Two Harbors. So if you only have a day, Avalon is the better option for more things to do.

And lastly, it’s quicker to get to Avalon. Avalon takes anywhere from an hour to an hour and a half to get to depending on which port you’re leaving from, whereas Two Harbors takes two hours to travel to.

If you only have a day, you’ll want as much time as possible on the island so I recommend sticking to Avalon.

The Perfect Catalina Island Day Trip Itinerary: 6 Things to do on Catalina Island

Walk around town & shop the local boutiques.

Estimated Time: 30 min – 1 hour

plan a trip to catalina island - what to do

When you first arrive in the city of Avalon, I’d recommend spending some time getting acquainted with the cute downtown area and exploring the local boutiques.

Also, if you plan to do an afternoon tour but haven’t already booked one ahead of time, the dock area is where you should do that once you arrive.

Stop by the Catalina Island Coffee & Cookie Co for a fresh cup of coffee and maybe a bite to eat if you haven’t had breakfast yet. I’d highly recommend trying one of their delicious cinnamon rolls (if there are any left).

Then simply walk around the small area that makes up downtown Avalon. Poke your head into shops and find some souvenirs that you might want to pick up later before you hop on the ferry back to the mainland.

If you’re a photographer, this is also a great time to get some initial shots of Catalina Island and its scenic harbor with its famous casino in the background.

Check Out the Best Viewpoints & Go for a Short Hike

Estimated time: 2-3 hours

rent a golf cart and take in the viewpoints

Once you’re caffeinated, it’s time to explore the island by foot and golf cart.

There are hardly any cars on Catalina Island, except for those that belong to the few thousand people who actually live on the island. This means most visitors get around the island by golf cart.

You’ll find rentals near the dock area by the hour. I’d recommend going with Catalina Golf Cart Rentals .

They also have a map for a 12-mile scenic route that takes about an hour to complete which is a good place to start if it’s your first time on the island.

Note: For rentals, you have to be at least 21 years old and provide a valid driver’s license. Renting a golf cart from Catalina Golf Cart Rentals also requires a $50 deposit and it’s cash-only but there’s a nearby ATM.

Rentals run at about $50/hour and there’s usually a deal where if you buy two hours you’ll get the third hour free.

Once you have your rental sorted, make sure to include these stops while exploring the island:

  • Buena Vista Point
  • Lover’s Cove Scenic Vista
  • 3 Palms Scenic Overlook (this one is probably my favorite view on Catalina Island)
  • Ocean Scenic Overlook
  • Wrigley Botanical Garden

short hikes on catalina island

And if you’re up for a short hike, head up to the Catalina Island Conservancy near the Wrigley Botanical Garden and tackle one of these hikes:

  • Garden to Sky Trail (2.8 miles)
  • Trans-Catalina Trail to Lone Tree Viewpoint (3 miles)
  • Hermit Gulch Trail (3.4 miles)

Hit the Water

Estimated Time: 2 hours

water activities on catalina island

You can’t visit Catalina Island and not do at least one water activity while you’re in town.

The surrounding waters around the island are full of diverse marine life, kelp forests, and clear waters that are some of the warmest in Southern California.

It’s no surprise then that it’s a great spot for scuba diving, snorkeling, or exploring the water through a boat ride, kayaking , or standup paddleboarding.

Here are a few activities to choose from:

  • Snorkeling – You can either do a guided tour if you’re not familiar with snorkeling or simply rent a snorkel and go by yourself. A few of the best spots for snorkeling near Avalon include Casino Point Dive Park/Avalon Dive Park (there are snorkel rentals near the park) and Lover’s Cove (a more secluded spot so you should pick up snorkels in Avalon before heading here). If you want to do a tour, I’d recommend going with Snorkeling Catalina .

snorkeling on catalina island - lover's cove

  • Scuba diving – You can book a scuba tour with Catalina Scuba (they offer tours for both certified divers and those without any experience).
  • Kayaking or SUPing – If you prefer to explore above the water, renting a kayak or standup paddleboard (or going on a tour) is an ideal option. Since the water is usually very clear around the shores of Catalina, you can still see a lot from above the water. You can find kayak or SUP rentals from Wet Spot Rentals (they also have snorkel rentals) or Descanso Beach Ocean Sports offers tours and rentals.
  • Dolphin & whale watching – If you’re not a fan of getting wet but still want to experience the marine life around Catalina Island, you can go on a two-hour dolphin and whale watching tour with Catalina Diver Supply .
  • Jet skiing – If you’re just looking for a bit of fun out on the water, you can rent jet skis from Catalina Jet Ski .
  • Parasailing – If you’re looking for a thrilling water activity, one of the best ways to see the beauty of Catalina Island is from above. California Parasail offers 800-foot flights for 1, 2, and 3 people.

Note: Another very popular water activity on Catalina is the island’s semi-submersible submarine and glass-bottom boat tours. However, many of these tours feed fish to get them to swim close to the boat. These regular feedings can actually be detrimental to the local fish population as it teaches them to not search for their own food. I personally don’t recommend any tour that interacts with wildlife in a way that negatively changes their natural behavior, which is why I don’t recommend these activities if you’re going to Catalina Island. And, in general, I find these tours to be overly touristy and not the best way to experience the local sea life in its natural habitat.

Relax on the Beach

Estimated time: 1-2 hours

relax on the beach - middle beach on Santa Catalina

Even though there are a lot of adventure activities you can do, it’s good to give yourself at least an hour or two to just relax on Catalina island’s beautiful beaches as well.

One of the best places to go where you can also grab a cocktail to sip out on the beach is Descanso Beach Club .

Located just past the casino, this private beach costs $2 for beach access but is the nicest beach within walking distance to downtown Avalon.

You can also rent private cabanas at Descanso if you’re with a group or choose to simply enjoy the sand with a beach towel. It’s the perfect place to relax and grab a drink or bite to eat in the off-season or during the week.

During the high season, it turns into a party beach with rotating DJs on Saturday and Sunday afternoons, so don’t expect a peaceful beach setting if you’re visiting the island on a summer weekend.

You can also rent kayaks , standup paddleboards, and sign up for the zip lining tour , rope course , and rock climbing wall at Descanso Beach if you want to fit multiple activities into one area.

If you’re not a fan of paying for beach access, you can also lay out on the small beach near the ferry dock, called Middle Beach (although it doesn’t have quite the same ambiance).

Eat Fresh Lobster Rolls

Estimated time: 45 minutes – 1 hour

grab some fresh seafood before you head back on the Catalina Express

Santa Catalina Island isn’t exactly known for its foodie scene, but it’s still surrounded by the ocean so if you’re a fan of seafood you should make time to grab some delicious lobster rolls before you get back on the ferry.

I went to the Lobster Trap while I was in town and although the service could’ve been friendlier, their lobster rolls were a great way to end my time on Catalina Island before making my way back to the mainland.

Optional Addition: Go on a Local Tour

Estimated Time: 1-3 hours

tours on catalina island

If you get through everything on this Catalina Island itinerary, you probably won’t have time to do a guided tour on the island as well.

However, if you choose to extend your time or want to switch out one of the above activities with a tour, there are plenty of options on the island. Here are some of the best tours on Catalina Island:

  • Catalina Casino Tour – One of the most popular tours on Catalina Island is a walking tour through the historic art deco casino. There are two tours you can take: Discover the Casino Tour and Catalina Casino Behind the Scenes Tour . The 45-minute Discover the Casino Tour is the perfect intro to the history of the Casino and it allows you to tour the main highlights, including Avalon Theatre. The 90-minute Behind the Scenes Tour goes into more detail and focuses on areas of the casino that were once closed to the public for over 70 years.
  • Jeep Tours – If you’re looking to explore more of the island than what your golf cart can handle, I’d recommend hopping on a two-hour jeep tour. This eco-friendly tour with Catalina Island Company gives you a good overview of the local wildlife around the island and even some bison spotting.
  • Zip Lining Tour – As mentioned above, there’s a zip lining tour you can sign up for at Descanso Beach. If you’re looking for some thrills, this is an easy experience to fit into your time at the beach if you have a couple of hours to spare. On the tour, you’re taken 600 feet above the beach where you’ll fly across the canyon and through some eucalyptus trees at around 35 MPH. Along the zip line course, you’ll enjoy some scenic ocean views and learn more about the flora and fauna that can be found on Catalina Island. And, if you’re looking for more activities, there’s also a rock climbing wall and ropes course at Descanso Beach.
  • Ghost Tours – If you’re staying overnight, looking for a quirky tour, and you enjoy ghost stories, doing a Haunted Catalina ghost tour can be a fun way to spend an hour. Tours start at 7 pm nightly from the base of the Green Pier in downtown Avalon.

Quick History of Catalina Island

Santa Catalina Island’s history goes back to 8,000 years when Indigenous people from the Gabrieliño/Tongva tribe first inhabited the island.

Over the years, it’s been visited by smugglers, pirates, the Union army, missionaries, celebrities, and, of course, travelers.

For a good chunk of the 19th century, the island was owned by James Lick, a real estate investor and at one point the wealthiest man in California.

He eventually sold the island to the Banning Brothers, who started the Santa Catalina Island Company in the 1890s and turned the island into the resort destination it is today.

In the early 1900s, William Wrigley Jr., who had a controlling interest in the Santa Catalina Island Company, started developing the island even more into a resort destination.

He was the one who built the Catalina Casino and he even made Avalon the Spring Training home for the Chicago Cubs until 1951. His descendants still own most of the Santa Catalina Island Company today.

For a short stint during World War II, the island closed down to the public so it could be used as a military training facility. After the war, tourism picked up again and it became a popular vacation spot for celebrities, especially from the 1930s to 1950s.

Catalina Island was and still is a popular place to shoot movies (over 500 films, tv shows, and commercials have been shot in the area).

Best Time to Visit Catalina Island

The best time of year to explore Catalina Island is spring and fall. You’ll find the best weather during this time of the year and slightly fewer crowds than you will in summer.

Summer can be a good time to visit as well, but the weather is often overcast in the mornings with the sun not breaking through until the afternoon.

Winter is the worst time to visit with choppy waters that make water activities hard to do and the ferry ride to and from the island unpleasant.

However, if you’re looking for fewer crowds and care more about land activities, winter can be a good alternative to the busier months.

Just note that winter brings reduced ferry times so there’s less wiggle room for a day trip (although it’s still very much possible).

Tips for Visiting Catalina Island

  • Catalina Island isn’t the cheapest – As you can probably tell with the ferry price alone, a visit to Catalina Island isn’t always the cheapest. Transportation (including the ferry and golf cart rentals), food, and accommodation (if you’re planning a weekend trip), all come at a premium price. Make sure to budget accordingly and know that you’ll probably have to spend at least $200-$300 for a day trip to Catalina.
  • Keep track of ferry times – This is especially the case if you’re visiting in the low season when there are only 1-2 departures and returns per day. Make sure you’re keeping track of the time and that you can actually fit everything in without needing to rush back to the ferry if you’re only doing a day trip.
  • Pack water shoes – If you plan to do water activities, don’t forget a pair of water shoes. Although there are some soft sandy beaches, a lot of the shoreline around Catalina Island can be rocky and uncomfortable to walk around with bare feet.
  • Try a Buffalo Milk cocktail – You can’t make a visit to Catalina Island without trying its signature drink! This creamy cocktail is made with vodka, Kahlua, Creme de Cocoa, Cream de Banana, and half and half. You should be able to find it at any bar on Catalina Island, but a good place to start is either Descanso Beach Club or Luau Larry’s. It’s basically like ice cream in cocktail form.

A Perfect Catalina Island Day Trip

Catalina Island Day Trip

Looking to escape Los Angeles for a sun-soaked day filled with adventure and exploration? Then a day trip to gorgeous Catalina Island is just what you need! This charming island paradise is located just 22 miles off the coast of Southern California, making it an easy and exciting getaway.

In this guide, you’ll discover everything you need to plan the perfect Catalina Island day trip from start to finish, including how to get there, the best things to do during your visit, top tips for making the most of your time on the island, and more. Let’s get started!

How to Get to Catalina Island

The first order of business when embarking on your Catalina Island retreat is actually getting yourself to the island . Here are the two main options for making your way across the ocean to Catalina:

Catalina Island Day Trip

For most visitors, the easiest and most popular way to reach Catalina is via ferry. You can catch a ferry from ports in Dana Point, Long Beach, Newport Beach, and San Pedro. The ferry rides operated by the Catalina Flyer and Catalina Express take about an hour. Ferry tickets generally run $80  roundtrip. I recommend booking your ferry travel in advance since tickets can sell out, especially during the summer high season.

Catalina Island Day Trip

If you’re looking to get to the island faster or just want a more adventurous ride, you can also take a helicopter. Helicopter service is available from Long Beach and San Pedro. Flights take approximately 15 minutes one-way. Prices start at around $179 per person. Taking a chopper certainly makes for an unforgettable Catalina arrival!

How to Get Around Catalina

Catalina Island covers 75 square miles, so you’ll want solid transportation arranged to take in all the sights. Here are your main options for getting around during your day in paradise:

Do you need a golf cart to get around Catalina?

Golf carts are hands down the most popular mode of transportation on Catalina, but they’re not an absolute must. The main town of Avalon is small enough to tackle on foot if you’d prefer. However, a golf cart does make getting between attractions around the island quicker and easier.

Catalina Island Day Trip

Where can you rent golf carts?

There are numerous rental facilities in Avalon, like Catalina Island Golf Carts & Tours, if you opt for golf cart travel. Booking must be done 24 hours earlier if only you have a valid driver’s license. Their rates for 4-passenger golf carts are $110 for 2 hours.

Some hotels, like the Mt. Ada, include complimentary cart rentals with your stay. You can expect to pay $45-65 to rent a four-seater golf cart for a few hours. I recommend renting one for at least part of your day. Zipping around in a golf cart is part of what gives a Catalina trip its charm!

What to Do on Your Catalina Island Day Trip

Catalina Island Day Trip

Now for the fun part, how exactly should you spend your action-packed day on Catalina? With so many options for adventures, tours, shopping, beaches , and more, you certainly won’t run out of things to keep you busy. Here are some of my top ideas to help you make the most of your Catalina escape:

Rent a Golf Cart

As mentioned earlier, renting a golf cart is a popular Catalina activity . Once you have your own set of wheels for the day, you’ll have the freedom to cruise from sight to sight across the island easily. Make sure to drive along some of the island’s higher points for those incredible ocean views!

Walk Around Downtown

The main town of Avalon has a wonderful charm and energy about it. Wander along the vibrant downtown strip to visit the various shops, restaurants, and attractions. Be sure to stop at Lloyd’s Confectionery for saltwater taffy. This candy shop is iconic on the island!

Go Snorkeling

Snorkeling is one of Catalina’s main activities as an underwater playground. Grab some snorkel gear and gaze upon the area’s vibrant marine wildlife, from bright orange Garibaldi to swaying sea kelp. Lover’s Cove near the Casino and Descanso Beach Club are top spots to snorkel from shore. Or you can book a dedicated snorkel tour.

Catalina Island Day Trip

Take an Underwater Cruise

Speaking of witnessing marine life, going on a glass-bottomed boat ride is another excellent way to admire Catalina’s sea creatures and kelp forests. The semi-submersible Undersea Tour vessel allows you to travel THAT deep underwater for next-level exploration through porthole windows. How cool is that?

Zipline Across the Island

For thrill-seekers, soaring across Catalina while strapped to a zipline cable is sure to get your adrenaline pumping. Catalina Zipline Eco Tour features five separate lines that let you take in the island from exhilarating new heights at speeds around 40 mph. What an unforgettable way to experience Catalina’s rugged landscape!

Catalina Island Day Trip

Lay Out on the Beach

Of course, no Catalina Island day trip itinerary would be complete without some good old-fashioned beach time. Settle in on the sandy shorelines around Avalon or take a quick shuttle bus ride to the secluded beaches of Two Harbors. Descanso Beach Club is a top option featuring upscale amenities like beachside dining and cabanas. Relax on the beach, and just don’t forget that SPF—the California sun is intensely strong!

Kayak Through the Waters of the Island

Paddling around Catalina’s pristine coastline in a kayak allows you to access hidden mini-beaches and soak in those glittering ocean vistas. Plus, kayaking grants you front-row seats to the island’s natural splendor that larger tour boats can’t reach. Sign up for a guided kayaking eco-tour or rent your kayak to chart your course.

What To Do In Avalon

Want to focus your day trip exclusively on vibrant Avalon? Here’s a suggested Catalina itinerary to make the very most of your time in this charming main town:

Catalina Island Day Trip

Catch a morning ferry from Los Angeles to Avalon

Most ferries depart between 9-10 AM, which gives you a perfect late-morning island arrival. Enjoy your coffee and a snack while watching the Californian coast fade into the distance!

Rent a golf cart for a few hours and drive around the loop to all the scenic viewpoints

Cruising around Avalon in a golf cart is a time-honored pastime. Drive along the winding coastal roads near the Wrigley Memorial and Botanical Gardens to fully take in those sweeping Pacific panoramas.

Walk around the downtown area, grab lunch at Bluewater Grill, and do a little shopping

Lose yourself for a couple of hours wandering Avalon’s quaint downtown district. Grab an oh-so-fresh fish taco lunch on the sunny patio of family-run eatery Bluewater Grill. Then browse the boutiques for the perfect Catalina souvenir—perhaps some salted caramel fudge or a dreamcatcher made from island botanicals.

Go to Descanso Beach Club and enjoy this beautiful and upscale private stretch of sand with cabanas and cocktails that will transport you to the Mediterranean.

Descanso Beach Club specializes in delivering luxurious yet laidback beach days. Sip your signature tropi-colada beach cocktail under a shaded cabana as you gaze out over those glittering waves lapping gently onto the sand. Pure heaven!

Book an afternoon activity, like a glass bottom boat tour, parasailing, scuba diving, or even sunset ziplining (It will be fun).

Still feeling energized after lunch? Then, tack an adventure tour onto your afternoon Catalina itinerary! Pick your thrill level; from mellow submarine sightseeing to adrenaline-spiking parasailing rides soaring 600 feet above sea level, this island truly has it all. That way, you can sightsee and put a check next to trying a new activity too.

Time to head back to LA!

After all the fresh air, sun, and excitement, you’ll surely be ready to nap on the ferry ride back to the mainland. Watch the sun dip down over Catalina’s mountains in the distance as you journey back to reality, reflecting on your island memories.

What To Do In Two Harbors

Looking for a slightly less touristy and more remote Catalina experience? Consider spending your day trip on the island’s western frontier, Two Harbors. Nestled between towering cliffs and the open ocean, this tinier village delivers big doses of wilderness and charm. Follow this recommended Two Harbors itinerary for an off-the-beaten-path Catalina adventure:

Catalina Island Day Trip

Take the morning Catalina Express ferry from San Pedro to Two Harbors

You’ll cover more ground if starting your day bright and early! The high-speed Catalina Express vessel whisks you to Two Harbors in just over an hour. Greet the day with salty ocean breezes whipping through your hair up on the open-air deck.

Head to Harbor Sands at Two Harbors

This tucked-away waterfront oasis beckons you with its red circular tent pavilions, and dreams of s’mores dance in your head. Made for lounging the day away on cozy rattan sofas and beach chairs while snacking to your heart’s content from their grill menu and honor bar system.

Rent paddle boards from Two Harbors Dive & Recreation Center

What better way to take in Two Harbors’ majestic rugged shoreline scenery than from atop a stand-up paddleboard? This fun water activity helps you find your balance—both physically AND mentally. Don’t be surprised if curious island foxes pop their heads up from shoreline bushes to glimpse you wobbling away on the water!

Go for an afternoon hike

Boasting over 20 miles of multi-use trails, Two Harbors serves up no shortage of stunning hikes. Trek out on the Hermit Gulch Trail for spectacular panoramic views of bison from the clifftops, or wind your way through the island’s unique flora along the Canyon Trail for a more woodsy experience.

Take the 6:30 PM ferry back to San Pedro

Still in vacation mode as you board the early evening ferry back to the mainland after your whirlwind Two Harbors daycation. Watch the pastel sunset over the island’s ridgelines for one last Catalina moment.

Quick Tips for Taking a Day Trip to Catalina Island

Catalina Island Day Trip

To ensure your Catalina day trip goes as planned, keep these tips in mind:

Choose between spending time in Avalon or Two Harbors

As outlined above, busy Avalon and remote Two Harbors offer quite different experiences. Choose which vibe suits your crew best. Families and first-timers may prefer easygoing Avalon, while adventurous couples could opt for Two Harbors’ peaceful escape from civilization.

Consider the best time of year for you to go

Summer is Catalina’s peak visitor season for good reason; expect sunny bluebird days and warm beach-prime conditions from June to  August. However, spring and fall offer their charms and smaller crowds. If you don’t mind brisk ocean temperatures, winter attracts whale-watching enthusiasts spotting migrating gray whales.

Keep track of the ferry times

Nothing ruins the island fun faster than missing your ferry ride back! Avoid logistical nightmares by always keeping your departure time at the top of your mind. Give yourself a generous buffer as ferry lines get busy in the afternoons.

Don’t overbook yourself

It’s tempting to jam-pack your Catalina itinerary trying to experience “everything”—but that’s a recipe for exhaustion! I recommend picking 1-2 key activities/attractions per visit. Whether that means kayaking and beach time or ziplining and shopping, quality over quantity makes for the most enjoyable Catalina trip.

The Perfect Catalina Island Day Trip

Craving a healthy dose of California cool? Then make Catalina Island your next sunny day trip destination! With its gorgeous shores, charming small towns, and wide offering of adventures, this island paradise ticks all the boxes. From ferry rides to good food and beach lounging, each detail of your Catalina getaway is bound to be fun. Just don’t forget the SPF; you’ll undoubtedly catch some iconic island rays!

So now that you’re equipped with all the fine details of drafting your visit to Catalina Island itinerary, the only thing left to do is pick a date and board that ferry!

A Perfect Catalina Island Day Trip – the Complete Guide

Catalina Island day trip - a complete guide

Are you planning a day trip to Catalina Island? Then continue reading! I’ll share everything you need to know to create your perfect Catalina Island day trip .

Santa Catalina Island, which is generally referred to simply as Catalina Island, is located about 30 miles off the coast of California’s mainland. It is one of California’s most underrated, hidden gems.

With a population of just over 4200 people and around 22 miles (35 km) in length, this tiny Californian island makes for an amazing, fun-filled day trip.

On one of my most recent excursions to Mexico , I got the chance to stop in Catalina Island and was blown away by its breathtaking beauty, which quickly turned Catalina into one of my all-time favorite travel destinations.

In this guide, I will go over all of the best insider tips on how to have a successful Catalina Island day trip.

And now, without further ado, here is my ultimate guide to the perfect day trip to Catalina Island.

How to Get to Catalina Island

There are two different options to choose from to get from the mainland to Catalina Island: by sea or by air.

The most common way to get to Catalina Island for the day is by taking a ferry. There are 4 different ports to travel out of; San Pedro, Long Beach, Newport Beach, or Dana Point. The ferry rides are operated by two companies: Catalina Express and Catalina Flyer and take about an hour.

The next option will have you in Catalina in just about 15 minutes and that is by helicopter with IEX Helicopters. You can catch a helicopter ride from San Pedro, Long Beach, John Wayne Airport, and Burbank Airport.

While the ferry usually costs about $80 for a round trip (discounts available for seniors and children), it is by far the most cost-effective way for your Catalina Island day trip. A helicopter ride starts at $179 per person for a one-way flight.

Tip: Catalina Island makes a perfect day trip from both Los Angeles and San Diego

Things to Do During Your Catalina Island Day Trip

While the idea of spending only a day in such a beautiful place like Catalina might not sound like a long time, the good thing is that it is actually the perfect amount of time to explore the famous, yet small island .

Here are all the must-do’s for your day trip to Catalina Island.

1. Rent a Golf Cart

Whatever you do, one does not visit Catalina Island without renting a golf cart and driving around the island to take in all the beautiful views that the island offers.

In downtown Catalina, you’ll find several golf cart rental companies that will let you rent carts by the hour. Along with a golf cart, you will be given a map of the island and sent on your way to let your wanderlust run wild.

We rented our golf cart for 2 hours, but 1 hour ended up being more than enough time to drive around and discover the island.

Tip: if you really want to see all the best places on the island then this private golf cart tour is a great option.

2. Walk Around Downtown

Exploring downtown on a day trip to Catalina Island

Avalon is the main town on Catalina Island, and that is where you find downtown Catalina.

Filled with delicious restaurants, shopping boutiques, and some fun nightlife, downtown Catalina is the perfect way to unwind and spend your day.

Whether you’re in a shopping mood or would like to enjoy a seaside cocktail, this quaint neighborhood is the perfect place to hang out and relax.

While you can easily get through all of downtown within 30 minutes, it’s perfect because it leaves time for the rest of the activities you can do during your Catalina Island day trip.

3. Go Snorkeling

things to do on a one day trip to Catalina Island

If there is an activity that I can’t recommend enough it’s to go snorkeling in the crystal clear waters of the island. With an abundance of different snorkeling locations, there is absolutely no better way to spend your day in Catalina.

Snorkeling is one of my favorite activities in the world, so it’s needless to say that whenever I am anywhere near water, I try to fit some snorkel time into my itinerary.

While I have been snorkeling more times than I can count, in more places than I can count, Catalina blew me away with its out-of-this-world snorkeling spots . With hundreds of fish swimming around you, this is the perfect activity for your day in Catalina.

4. Take an Underwater Cruise

Looking to catch a glimpse of the underwater life but don’t want to get wet? there is this cool semi-submarine called Nautilus .

They offer trips that last 45 minutes and take you to a marine sanctuary to see the fish from your own porthole. Especially if you are visiting Catalina Island with kids, this is a great activity!

You’ll be taken through Lover’s Cove, a State Marine Conservation Area sanctuary where you’ll see amazing undersea gardens and ocean habitats in a semi-submersible vessel designed after America’s first nuclear-powered submarine, the USS Nautilus.

5. Zipline Across the Island

What better way to view Catalina than from 300 feet above the ground ?

While this activity might not be for the weak-hearted, it is definitely worth it and probably one of the most exhilarating things to do in Catalina Island.

Catch views like no other, all while getting a good adrenaline rush by zip-lining through the island. There truly is not a more liberating feeling than traveling through the air at high speeds while basking in the beauty that Catalina offers.

Tip: if this zipline sounds a bit too much for you, check out this activity . It gets you to climb bridges, ladders, and other challenging obstacles suspended in a grove of towering eucalyptus. Great to do with kids as well!

6. Lay Out on the Beach

One day in Catalina Island - enjoy the beach

If you’re looking to just take it easy during your Catalina Island day trip, there is nothing wrong with just grabbing a cocktail, laying out on the beach, and enjoying the sunshine.

And to be quite honest, you can never go wrong with a beach day. The main beach at Catalina is breathtaking and it’s the perfect way to unwind during your vacation.

7. Kayak Through the Waters of the Island

Another famous activity in Catalina is kayaking. Rent a kayak for a few hours and go out into the water for a fun day at sea.

Kayaking is the perfect way to explore the beauty of the island as you get to spend time with the hundreds of fish that will be swimming around you. And with crystal clear waters, it will be easy to spot all the different types of fish in the waters of the island.

Tip: Looking for more of an adrenaline rush? There’s a parasailing company in Avalon as well. So instead of admiring Catalina’s beautiful coastline from a kayak, you could also do so from the air!

8. Enjoy the Good Food

Santa Catalina Island is known for its good seafood restaurants. The Lobster Trap is a favorite, but there are many options around Avalon.

Stop by Catalina Coffee & Cookie for a cup of coffee and a delicious sweet treat (including vegan options).

If you’re looking for the best homemade ice cream, go to Scoops.

And check out Descanso Beach Club if you want to enjoy a cocktail and some food by the beach.

The Perfect Catalina Island Day Trip

the perfect Catalina Island day trip

Although small, Catalina is filled with so many fun activities for anyone who visits the island. From the beautiful surroundings to the locals who so warmly welcome you in, the food, and the ocean.

You can never go wrong with taking a day trip to Catalina Island.

While of course, it would be nice to spend a few extra days on the island. If you do have more time, check out this article about the best places to stay on Catalina Island .

Go to Catalina Island in the fall. It will be warm, the air is crystal clear, and the water is as warm as it gets in SoCal.

Very informative and interesting Thank you

Hi William, Even though it’s getting a bit cooler, I’d still say Catalina Island makes a perfect day trip. And it will be a lot less crowded than in summer! Otherwise a visit to Temecula for some wine tasting is great. Or a day trip to San Diego.

catalina island day trip packages

Going on a Catalina Island day trip is one of the most unique and fun things you can do when visiting Southern California . Whether you want a break from exploring the urban landscapes of Los Angeles or want a change of scene from the beaches of Orange County, Santa Catalina Island has a lot to offer visitors and it surprisingly quick and easy to reach from numerous ports in either area.

Catalina is a nature and water lover’s paradise and really has something for everyone — from a charming main town to epic outdoor activities to fun, family-friendly outings.

From beautiful scenery, unique architecture, fascinating ecosystems and crystal-clear water, Catalina makes for an excellent day trip destination and one that you soon won’t forget!

Table of Contents

How to Get to Catalina Island

Catalina, being an island, is really only accessible by ferry (unless you’re willing to shed the cash for a helicopter ride to the island). There are four different ferries leaving from various ports in LA and Orange County, and the journeys vary in time and frequency.

Los Angeles to Catalina

If you are in LA, the easiest way to get to Catalina is to sail from Long Beach or San Pedro, both located in LA County.

Ferry from Long Beach

Long Beach is a town located in the south of Los Angeles County and makes for the busiest port for sailing to Catalina Island. The ferry from Long Beach, operated by Catalina Express , leaves multiple times per day and has services directly to Avalon — the main town on the island.

It is recommended to arrive at the ferry terminal at least 30 minutes before the journey to ensure that you have time to park, to purchase tickets (if you haven’t already done so online) and to board the boat.

The journey takes about an hour from start to finish.

Ferry from San Pedro

The ferry to Catalina from San Pedro is operated by the same company that operates the Long Beach Ferry — Catalina Express .

Again, there are a few sailings per day between San Pedro and Avalon and the San Pedro port also has sailings to the other “city” on the island, Two Harbors, so leaving from this port is a good option if you would like to explore the area outside of Avalon.

Like the ferry from Long Beach, expect sailing time to take about an hour port-to-port and try to be at the ferry terminal at least 30 minutes before your expected departure times.

Avalon Bay from the hills on Catalina Island

Organised Tour from Los Angeles

If you would prefer to discover Catalina as part of an organised tour rather than independently, then this tour leaving from LA & North Orange County is a great choice for you.

They will pick you up from your hotel and organise everything for you, ensuring that all you have to do on your day trip to Catalina is have fun!

Alternatively, this tour leaving from Anaheim is a great option. It also includes hotel pick-up and transport.

There are countless optional add-ons (including a number of the activities we have listed in this article) and you can enjoy all of the highlights of the destination with none of the stress of planning!

Orange County to Catalina

If you’re staying in Orange County and want to visit Catalina Island from this area, then there are a couple of options available for you here, as well.

Ferry from Dana Point

Dana Point is a town in South Orange County that is perhaps best known for being the starting point of the iconic Pacific Coast Highway . Leaving from the iconic Dana Point Harbor (which is also filled with a lot of cool shops and great restaurants!), this ferry is also operated by the Catalina Express company.

Like the other ferry sailings, it is important to arrive in enough advance time to board your boat — parking can be a bit of a nightmare at Dana Point Harbor depending on the time of day and season you’re visiting in. The journey to Catalina will take about an hour and a half and the ferry only sails to Avalon.

Ferry from Newport Beach

And our final option for ferries to Catalina leaves from Newport Beach in north Orange County. Operated by Catalina Flyer , this ferry departs from Newport Beach harbour and sails multiple times per day.

The ferry company asks that passengers arrive at the terminal an hour before departing and the journey takes about an hour and fifteen minutes.

Avalon Harbour

San Diego to Catalina

If you’re thinking of going on a day trip to Catalina Island from San Diego, please note that you are going to be in for a very long day and it’s not entirely advisable. The closest ferry port to downtown San Diego would be in Dana Point, which is about a 90-minute drive without traffic — and it’s southern California, so you should expect there to be traffic.

Couple the drive with the fact that you will likely need to be at the ferry terminal at least 30 minutes before departure and that the ferry will take a further 90 minutes to reach Avalon, then you’re looking at spending at least six hours in transit for a simple day trip.

If you’re set on visiting Catalina from San Diego rather than LA, it is far more advisable to plan an overnight trip there to ensure that you’re able to actually have fun and not be rushed.

Things to do on a Catalina Day Trip

Now that we’ve discussed all of the ferry options for getting to the island, now it’s time to discuss what to do on Catalina Island for a day! Whether you’re looking for adventure or to simply relax in a delightful vacation destination, you’re sure to fall in love.

Explore Downtown Avalon

As the only officially incorporated town on Catalina Island, Avalon is a must-visit on the island and it is absolutely charming. Boasting classic seaside charms, a wonderful promenade, great shops, and fantastic restaurants, Avalon has a lot to offer visitors.

Make sure to take in the iconic Catalina Casino and enjoy the views of the boats moored in the harbour. There is also a great seaside promenade that you can stroll down, taking the time to pop into various shops and support the local economy!

If you want to venture a little bit outside of the city centre, then make sure to visit the Wrigley Memorial and Botanic Garden (operated by Catalina Island Conservancy) for a pleasant stroll through well-kept gardens full of endemic plants.

And if you want to learn more about Avalon’s history and top sites, consider going on this one-hour tour to give you a more holistic view of Catalina’s capital! There is also this private golf cart tour around the town or, if you want to go independently, you could opt to rent a golf cart yourself. You could also find a food tour to explore the local culinary scene and sample a bit of fresh seafood.

Wrigley Memorial & Botanical Gardens

Tour the Iconic Casino

There is no way that taking the time to explore Catalina would be complete without visiting the iconic and famous Catalina Casino — easily the most memorable building on the island and, at one point, the tallest building in California!

Constructed in 1928 and commissioned by chewing gum magnate William Wrigley, Jr, the Catalina Casino is a beautiful art deco-style building overlooking Avalon Bay. Contrary to what the name may suggest, there has actually never been any sort of gambling facilities here, either, and instead uses the term “casino” from the literal Italian meaning of a “gathering place.”

Today, the building is home to a swanky cinema where you can see a new release and a beautiful ballroom that hosts events from time to time. If you’d like to learn more about the history of this iconic building, consider taking this tour that will bring you behind the scenes of the Catalina Casino.

The historic Avalon Casino

Go on a Semi Submarine

Though the island itself has a lot to offer, one of the main draws for anyone going on a one-day trip to Catalina Island would have to be the incredible aquatic activities that one can embark on. Catalina boasts a fascinating and unique underwater ecosystem with countless different species living and thriving in vast kelp forests.

If you want to have a glimpse of what lies below the surface of the crystal clear waters of Catalina without having to get too wet, then consider going for a boat tour on a semi-submersible!

These half-submerged, glass-bottom boats have windows that are perfect for peering at the bright orange Garibaldi fish and looking into the depths of kelp forests without having to don a snorkel or get a SCUBA certification.

If you’re keen to see this side of Catalina, consider taking this semi-submarine tour (also available from GetYourGuide here ) and prepare to be amazed at the world under the sea.

Search for Wild Bison

Catalina not only boats fascinating wildlife below the ocean’s surface — in fact, the wildlife above ground is just as fascinating. And one of the unique things about Catalina is that it is home to its own wild bison herd, which have lived on the island since they were imported there in 1924.

Though at one point the herd had over 600 bison, there are now about 150 bison that make up the herd. The Catalina Island bison are also not completely purebred bison, and they are believed to be a cross between the American Bison and a domestic cow.

You can spot these fascinating creatures on a jeep tour, where you can also get off-road and see just how beautiful the landscape of rural Catalina really is — an unmissable experience when you visit Catalina Island!

Snorkel or SCUBA Dive in the Kelp Forests

As mentioned earlier, something that should be included on any Catalina Island itinerary is exploring the incredible underwater ecosystems that reside off the shores of the island.

And one of the best ways to take in the sea life is by snorkelling or SCUBA diving in the gorgeous kelp forests.

Catalina is one of the best hotspots for SCUBA divers in southern California and is actually considered to be one of the best places to go diving in the entire world. The water around the island is exceptionally clear, meaning that the visibility that you can get in the kelp forest is second to none.

The unique ecosystem that you will experience either SCUBA diving or snorkelling through these kelp forests is really something truly exceptional.

A Garibaldi Fish in the waters of Catalina Island

Try Kayaking or Stand-up Paddleboarding

If you’re not too keen to see what lies below the ocean’s surface on your Catalina Island day trip itinerary but still want to get out on the water, then consider trying your hand at kayaking or stand-up paddleboarding!

This is truly an oasis to try out these fun sports as there are countless other people doing exactly the same thing — meaning that it is a safe and secure location to do it!

On a kayak or paddleboard, you can get to some remote coves and areas that are hard to reach or see and you can really feel one with the water and nature surrounding.

Keep an eye out for wildlife while you’re paddling along and maybe even consider taking some snorkel gear with you so you can hop in the water and see what lies beneath you!

Go Ziplining

If you’re after an adrenaline rush when visiting Catalina that also will provide incredible 360-degree views of the island and the surrounding Pacific Ocean, then consider taking the leap and going ziplining!

The Catalina Island Zip Line Eco Tour is a collection of five different zip lines that can reach up to 600 feet above sea level, go up to 35 mph, and provide you with absolutely stunning and amazing views over the entire island — along with a pretty hefty adrenaline rush!

So if you’re a bit of a daredevil and want to add quite a bit of excitement to your trip to Catalina, then please consider viewing the beautiful island from this heart-pounding zip line! After getting your adrenaline pumping, consider unwinding with a cocktail at the nearby Descanso Beach Club.

If you would rather explore the inland delights of Catalina on foot while on your day trip, then consider hitting one of the many trails on the island and going for a hike. Hiking opportunities are plentiful on the island and there is something for all types of fitness and skill levels.

Some of the most popular hiking trails include the Garden to Sky summit, which begins in the botanic garden, or the Trans Catalina trail, which can take you across the entire island if you’re willing to take the time to walk the whole thing.

Catalina Island view

Lounge on the Beach

If your plan for your day trip involves relaxation rather than adrenaline, you’ll find that the island doesn’t disappoint in this regard, either! There are countless lovely beaches that you can lounge on with varying degrees of busyness and popularity.

The most popular beach on the island is undoubtedly Descanso Beach, which is located just past the Casino on the other side of Avalon. There are also a few other beaches around Avalon that are worth visiting, including South Beach, Middle Beach and Step Beach.

If you’re in the Two Harbors area, there are plenty of beaches here that are absolutely wonderful, as well. Harbor Sands has a number of facilities, however, there is also a great beach in front of the Two Harbors Campground.

No matter where you find a good strip of sand to lay out your towel, you’re sure not to be disappointed in the quality of beaches on Catalina Island!

Beautiful Beach on Catalina Island

Where to Stay on Catalina Island

If you’re planning more of a Catalina Island weekend trip (as you can see, there are so many things to do that it’s impossible to cram them into the span of just one day!), then you’re going to need to find a great place to stay. If you’re wondering where to rest your head in Catalina, check out these options:

Catalina Island Seacrest Inn – If you’re looking for a comfortable and well-equipped mid-range hotel, then this is a great option for you! They have a range of clean and cosy rooms available and a convenient location in the heart of Avalon!

Pavilion Hotel – This Avalon hotel is located directly on the beach and is the perfect choice for those looking for a bit of luxury on their overnight trip to Catalina. They have several plush rooms available and fantastic grounds for you to lounge around in as well. Their location is also perfect for exploring all of the highlights of Avalon on foot.

Private Rental – If you’d rather have your own apartment or cottage during your stay in Catalina, then there are countless properties available on the island — including this beautiful villa in Avalon!

Planning a visit to Catalina can seem a bit complicated at first, but with numerous ferry options and countless fun and interesting things to do on the island, there is no doubt that it makes for an excellent, unique place to visit in Southern California!

How long do I need to stay to see the island rather well and to take in all the sights at a leisurly pace?

It’s really up to you and how much time, but I would recommend at least a few days if you want to truly explore the island 🙂

Planning a trip mid June with my husband and 95 year old Father-in-Law with all consideration he does get around pretty good but we don’t want to wear him out either, so do you think the Golf Cart would be sufficient for him or we were considering renting a power chair for him for this outing. Both my husband and he have been to Catalina Island before but it has been over 30 years. This would be a first for me.

Hi there! What would you recommend taking for a day trip? Is there a place on the island to store things while there?

Hi AnnMarie, I don’t think you need to take anything special with you for just a day except for a swimsuit if you plan do any water activities! You can find lockers to store your things on the island.

How far is from Ferry to the Casino?

Hi Gala, the Casino is about a 15-minute walk from the ferry terminal – less than a mile all along Avalon Bay.n

Thank you Maggie, is it active casino or just museum?

There has actually never been any gambling at the Avalon Casino (“casino” is simply the Italian word for “gathering place”). Currently, it operates as a cinema and an event space.

My parents took me to Avalon 75 years ago and I have been bring my boat there as a teen and adult. I no longer live in California but love to see the pictures and hear about whats going on at the island

Happy you enjoyed the article, Tom!

Been there twice, went parasailing for the first time out there. The casino is a fantastic place to visit. This comes from a person from Appleton Wisconsin, highly recommended to go and visit.

Thanks for your comment, Patrick! Glad you enjoyed your time in Catalina 🙂

How do you get around once you arrive on the island? Would you recommend renting a car?

The best way to get around is by golf cart! There are several places to rent them once you get to the island 🙂

I’ve grew up in Los Angeles and somehow I’ve never been to Catalina Island! This definitely makes me want to go. That casino is gorgeous and those turquoise waters are to die for. That’s definitely hard to come by at most LA beaches. Thanks for sharing.

Hope you get to visit sometime, Alanna! It’s really lovely 🙂
