Photograph: Shutterstock

This is the life. While Kent is packed with fantastic seaside weekend getaways, it is hard to look past the charms of delightful Deal. Located less than 10 miles from Dover, Deal is just about as postcard-perfect as England gets, a picturesque town of charms and whimsy, not to mention good food and better conversation. The town has been a magnet for artists and writers over the centuries, and history tells us that creative types know a seaside stunner when they see one.

While we don’t want to lurch too far into the cliches, Deal really does tick the ‘something for everyone’ box. Looking for a romantic couples getaway? A family adventure? Or maybe you want somewhere beautiful for some solo time? No matter the inspiration, you’ll find it in spades in Deal. Maybe we should have said you’ll find it in buckets and spades, but that would be too obvious. These are the best things to do in Deal right now.

First up, check out Deal Castle

Kick things off with a stomp around Deal Castle . The fort, built by trigger-happy Henry VIII as part of a chain of coastal defences, is amazingly well preserved. Learn about the historic graffiti hidden on the castle’s soft lead roof.

2.  Get a culture fix at Linden Hall Studio

Get a culture fix at Linden Hall Studio

Deal’s contemporary art scene is buzzing, largely thanks to Linden Hall Studio . Just 500 yards from the High Street,  this airy, two-floor gallery space  hosts visiting artists and masterclasses. From etchings to sculptures, there’s something to catch everyone’s eye.

3.  Get fish 'n' chips at Middle Street Fish Bar

4.  splash the cash at taylor-jones and son.

Splash the cash at Taylor-Jones and Son

You could easily lose an afternoon in Taylor-Jones and Son , a gorgeous gallery-slash-boutique. Shop for everything from handmade leather bags to limited-edition prints – if you bring treats, local celebrity Delilah the deaf sheepdog might show you around. Deal Farmers’ Market is a must on the first Saturday of each month: load up on locally picked fruit and freshly baked cakes.

5.  Stop for lunch at 81 Beach Street

Stop for lunch at 81 Beach Street

For sparklingly fresh seafood with a great view of the seafront, stop by 81 Beach Street – get the catch of the day, whatever the day. The excellent Frog and Scot 's set lunch menu is an excellent alternative.

6.  Delve into some music at Smugglers Records

Smugglers Records  is one of the best indie record shops in the South East. An offshoot of a label of the same name, it has an impressive selection of new vinyl and friendly, knowledgeable staff to help you pick out your next musical obsession.

7.  Soak up the vibes at Deal beach

There’s no nicer spot for a stroll than Deal Beach itself – it’s quiet, pristine and dotted with wooden fishing boats. Speaking of which, dangle a line off the 1950s concrete pier, and you might just luck out. No chance? Grab a snack at  Deal Pier Kitchen , perched right at the end with unbeatable sea views.

8.  Pay a visit to Le Pinardier

Pay a visit to Le Pinardier

Like a little piece of Bordeaux dropped into Deal, Le Pinardier   sells impeccably sourced bottles with a side of joie de vivre. Buy one to take away, or enjoy your tipple of choice at the long table with charcuterie and a baguette – you can always sleep it off on the way home.

9.  Sleep over at The Rose

Sleep over at The Rose

The Rose is a moody, romantic hideaway in the heart of Deal, a couple of roads back from the beach. Enter the dark-hued, 200-year-old building to find wood panelling, open fires and verdant palms. Understated mid-century furniture sits alongside brightly painted and antique pieces. Settle down in the restaurant for seasonal comfort food before slipping past a heavy red curtain and padding up softly lit stairs to one of eight richly decorated rooms. Don’t visit for slick service or reliable wifi – instead, steep yourself in The Rose’s vintage flair and warm, welcoming charm.  From £160 a night, including breakfast.

10.  Spend a week at Noggin Cottage

Spend a week at Noggin Cottage

If you’re looking to spend a week or so in the area (and you absolutely should), then there’s no better option than Noggin Cottage , a beautiful, three-storey Georgian property in one of the town’s prettiest (and most protected) areas, right by the coast. There aren’t many winter evenings more atmospheric than those spent in Noggin’s charming living room, warmed by its wood-burning stove. It is worth pointing out that Keeper's Cottage do plenty of other properties in the Deal area , so if this one’s booked up, there are plenty of options.

Lady’s Guide to a Day Trip to Deal

Today I want to share my guide to a day trip to Deal, Kent. This coastal town in England has everything from seaside castles to historic streets, and lots of smuggling lore to boot.

Day Trip to Deal

Day Trip to Deal

Located between Ramsgate and Dover on the southeast coast of England, under-the-radar Deal lies where the North Sea meets the English Channel.

The town often gets overlooked in favor of popular coastal destinations in Kent like Margate and Whitstable , but it’s worth a visit in its own right for its legendary history, beautiful streets, and seaside charm.

Street in Deal, England

How to Get to Deal

It’s easy to take a day trip to Deal from London and other parts of southern England. There are direct high-speed trains to Deal from the UK capital, and the journey takes less than an hour and a half.

There’s parking in Deal, too, so driving is an option if you prefer to take a day trip from London by car . The journey time from the capital is around two hours.

Things to Do on a Day Trip to Deal

Once in town, there are a lot of fun things to on a day trip to Deal. Whether you prefer castles or cafes, pastel houses or pebble beaches, Deal has something for everyone.

Pastel Houses in Deal, England

Deal Castle

One of the main attractions in town is Deal Castle. This hulking fortress is right on the beach and it’s a great place to start a day trip to Deal.

Established by Henry VIII, Deal Castle is one of seven forts built between 1539 and 1540 to defend ships in Kent and guard against enemy invaders from France and other parts of Europe.

Today the castle is an English Heritage property that’s open to visitors. I start my day trip to Deal by exploring the rooms, soaking up the sea views, and learning about the history of the fortress.

Deal Castle

Middle Street

Speaking of history, Middle Street is not only one of the prettiest streets in Deal, but also one of the most historic places in town. Seeing it is a must on a day trip to Deal.

Lined with colorful heritage houses from the 17th and 18th centuries, Middle Street and the narrow lanes that come off it were at the heart of Deal’s legendary smuggling trade.

Middle Street, Deal, England

Tobacco, tea, spirits, silk, lace, and other goods were smuggled in from the sea between the 17th and 19th centuries.

They passed from secret compartments in ships to the warren of streets and hiding places in local houses before being sold on the black market.

Middle Street, Deal, England

While smuggling may be a thing of Deal’s past, the houses and streets it took place in are preserved in time. Walking down Middle Street is a treat for the eyes, what with all the historic details and pastel facades.

Homes with names like Birdcage Cottage and Ole Malmsey add loads of charm to the area, and a heritage trail with signs giving information about Deal’s history in English and French bring the street’s past to life.

Middle Street, Deal, England

Deal Beach and Pier

But the town is on the seaside, and as beautiful as the inland area is, no day trip to Deal would be complete without a stint on the waterfront. This place is one of the best beach day trips from London , after all.

The Deal beach is a pebble one that slopes into the sea. It stretches from north to south and is punctuated by sights like Deal Pier. Built in the 1950s, the pier has a restaurant at the end and offers great views of the shoreline.

The beach is also a good place to spot colorful fishing boats, Deal Castle, and seafront restaurants and pubs.

I spend time taking it all in before walking south along the coastal path in Deal to get to neighboring Walmer. There are beautiful historic houses along The Beach, a seafront street that sits beside the trail.

Deal Pier

Deal Memorial Bandstand

On my way from Deal to Walmer I pass waterfront highlights like the Deal Memorial Bandstand.

It’s dedicated to the 11 musicians who were killed in 1989 when an IRA bomb exploded at the Royal Marines School of Music in Deal. Free concerts are held here in the warmer months.

Deal Memorial Bandstand

Walmer Castle

When I reach Walmer, I pop over to Walmer Castle, another of the seven forts built by Henry VIII between 1539 and 1540. It’s a great place to visit on a day trip to Deal.

Like Deal Castle, it’s an English Heritage site in Kent. But Walmer Castle is as different from its neighbor as can be.

While the former is a shell of a fortress on the beach, the latter is fully furnished inside and features lush gardens outside.

This is due to the fact that Walmer Castle was repurposed into a home for the Lords Warden of the Cinque Ports by the Duke of Dorset in 1727.

Since that time, Walmer Castle has been a residence of everyone from the Iron Duke of Wellington to the Queen Mum.

Each warden has left her or his mark on the home and grounds, from the Duke of Wellington’s deathbed to the Queen Mother’s garden.

I enjoy exploring the grounds, especially the sea of topiary hedges, kitchen garden flower beds, and reflecting pool. The castle itself is an impressive sight, too.

Walmer Castle, Kent, England

Where to Eat and Drink in Deal

Back in Deal, I check out the local food and drink scene. There are a lot of places to choose from here, and no day trip to Deal would be complete without a meal (or three).

At the start of my visit I pop into a cafe called Hog & Bean for a latte and a scone. The place has better ambiance than food, but it’s still nice to refuel inside.

When lunchtime rolls around, I grab fish and chips from one of the many restaurants along the waterfront and eat on the beach. It feels quintessentially English, not least because it’s raining.

In the late afternoon, I stop at The Ship Inn pub in Deal. This historic watering hole on Middle Street has a dark green wood bar and everything from a piano to a log burner inside.

The walls are covered in nautical memorabilia, and old revolvers and rowing oars catch my eye as I sit down for a drink.

The Ship Inn Pub, Deal, England

Shopping in Deal

In addition to food and drink, a day trip to Deal wouldn’t be complete without some retail therapy. There are great shops in Deal, and I seek out the best on the high street.

I love the home furnishings at Smoke on the Water, and there are fun clothes and accessories at Urban Chic. The Deal Bookshop is sweet, although purists might lament that it’s a Waterstones in disguise.

Dunlin & Diver has goods from small designers and makers to drool over. And don’t even get me started on how much I love the facade of Le Pinardier, a local wine bar and shop.

Beyond stores, there are art galleries like the alternative Don’t Walk Gallery in Deal. It features emerging and established talent in sculpture, illustration, photography, printmaking, and painting.

Across the street, I pop into The Village Indoor Market, a weekend special with stalls selling a variety of antiques, crafts, and fashion items.

There’s also a Saturday market in the Union Road car park with food, drinks, antiques, cards, crafts, clothes, and more.

Deal Bookshop

Museums in Deal

Another way to spend time on a day trip to Deal is to visit the town’s museums. There are lots of small ones here, including the Deal Timeball Tower. This seafront number has a unique Greenwich Mean Time signal on its roof.

Dating back to Victorian times, the time ball drops every day at 1pm and hourly from 9am to 5pm when the museum is open during the warmer months.

Not far from the time ball, the Deal Maritime and Local History Museum is another of the town’s highlights.

It showcases the evolution of Deal, Walmer, and the surrounding area in Kent with replica boats, nautical displays, and exhibitions. There’s even a boatyard.

Beyond museums, the historic Town Hall in Deal sits stately on the high street. There’s a Wednesday market here that offers prepared food and fresh produce each week.

There are blue plaques dedicated to Joseph Lister (of antiseptic fame) and other local heroes dotted around town, too.

Deal Timeball Tower, Kent, England

Sandown Castle

I know, I know. I’ve written a lot about castles in this blog post. But this town has more than its fair share of fortresses, and they’re all worth seeing on a day trip to Deal.

Sandown Castle is another of Henry VIII’s seven forts in the area. It’s as different from Deal Castle and Walmer Castle as they are from one another.

That’s primarily because Sandown Castle is in ruins. Way up at the north end of Deal, what remains of the castle can be seen in a garden by the beach.

It takes some imagination to envision what it looked like in its prime, but it’s still nice to walk along the waterfront and admire the garden it’s in.

Sandown Castle

The Rose Hotel

With so much to do in and around town, a day trip to Deal hardly feels like enough time. If I could do it over again, I would stay a night at The Rose hotel in Deal.

This stylish number on the high street is an eight-room boutique hotel in Deal. Housed in a former pub, it now boasts of a great restaurant, chic rooms, and stylish atmosphere. It’s perfect for a weekend getaway from London .

Deal Day Trip

But alas, my visit is a day trip to Deal. When evening comes, so does my train back to London.

As I speed along the coast and through the Kent countryside, I start to plan my next visit to Deal. I hope it will be soon, and if you’ve enjoyed this blog post, I hope you can visit in the near future, too.

Town of Deal in Kent from above

There is a good chance that this post contains affiliate links. If you make a purchase through them, I may receive a small commission at no extra cost to you! As an Amazon Associate, I earn from qualifying purchases. As ever, all opinions are my own.

Situated on the East coast of Kent, in between Margate and Dover, Deal has been an up-and-coming destination for a few years now. If you’ve been tempted to head to this coastal town, you’re probably wondering what the best things to do in Deal are.

Deal is a small town, and there definitely aren’t a million things to do. However, if you’re looking for a relaxed weekend at the seaside, or an easy day trip from London, going to Deal is the perfect answer!

I recently spent a lovely summer day in Deal as part of my 5-day trip to Kent. I spent the day wandering along the shore, eating awesome fish and chips, and drinking yummy craft beer. It was perfect! What more could you want from a seaside trip?

Without further ado, here are my recommendations for the very best things to do and see in Deal, Kent, to help you plan your trip!

Table of Contents

Best Things to Do in Deal, Kent

1. deal castle.

Deal Tudor Artillery Castle in England

If you are looking for one of the top things to do in Deal, then head straight on over to the famous Deal Castle. Built between 1539 and 1540, the Castle was constructed on the order of King Henry VIII.

It’s a fabulous example of Tudor architecture, and it’s one of the most underrated castles in Kent .

The castle was originally built as an artillery castle, a defensive structure that housed the heavy guns of the time. It’s also placed overlooking the coast, making it a very strategic location for defending against attacks.

Most of the castle is open for visitors to explore, from its storerooms to the tunnels that run below the surface. Inside, you’ll find exhibitions, activities, artefacts, and much more.

Unlike many of the castles in Kent, you don’t need all day to explore Deal Castle. One or two hours will be plenty. The castle costs £7.90 to enter for adults and £4.70 for kids.

2. Deal Art Galleries

Things to do in Deal Kent

Deal is fast becoming the “new Shoreditch”, and, as London prices push artists out of the city, more and more are making Kent coastal towns like Deal their home.

Because of this, Deal is now home to a variety of independent art galleries. These quirky galleries are great attractions to visit on your trip to Deal!

Popular art galleries include Taylor-Jones & Son, Linden Hall Studio, Don’t Walk Walk Gallery, and South East Open Art Studios. Each art gallery has its own focus, so if you’re super into your art it’s worth doing some research beforehand.

Whether you want to explore contemporary artwork or view a more punk rock-inspired photography studio, you’ll find a gallery right for you.

3. Deal Timeball Tower Museum

You’ll find Deal’s Timeball Tower on Deal’s seafront, and is now a Grade II listed building. It’s a fascinating reminder of Deal’s Georgian history and its role in the navy.

The Timeball Tower was used as an aid to naval navigation. Ship’s navigators needed to know the time to plot their longitudes.

To do this, though, they needed a point of reference and the exact time. The Timeball was therefore dropped from the top of the tower at 1pm.

It’s all pretty complicated, but the museum does an excellent job of explaining the role of timeballs and the history of Deal’s timeball. Entry for adults costs £3, and children cost £2.

4. Deal Pier

Deal Pier in Kent

A stroll along Deal Pier is a must for any visitor as it gives you some of the best views over the town! If you’re wondering what to do in Deal a sunny day, there’s no better place to be than Deal Pier.

Deal Pier was built in 1838, but it was destroyed during World War II. The pier that stands today was rebuilt and reopened in 1957, and nowadays live bands play on the pier most Sundays. It’s very cute!

At the end of the pier you’ll find the Deal Pier Kitchen, which looks stunning! Not only do visitors benefit from 360-degree views over the sea, but the restaurant also serves up stunning local produce, including steak, lobster, and a varied brunch menu.

As well as strolling along the pier, many people head here to go fishing, and it even holds a “fish of the month” competition.

You have to pay a small fee to fish here, depending on the season and time you’re visiting, and there are also frequent opportunities to go Saturday midnight fishing here.

5. Walmer Castle and Gardens

Things to do in England

If you fancy some physical activity during your visit to Deal, then try out the cycle path that connects Deal Castle with Walmer Castle.

The path is 16 kilometres long and runs next to the beachfront. It’s the perfect way to connect a great day out at two of Kent’s most historical sites.

Walmer Castle and Gardens has recently been restored, and now the historic site has been brought back to life. The castle was initially built, like Deal Castle, as part of Henry VIII’s chain of England’s coastal defences to prevent an invasion from France.

It later became the home of the Lord Warden of the Cinque Ports, and later The Duke of Wellington.

The castle is popular with Queen Elizabeth, who regularly visits Walmer Castle. Due to the history of Walmer Castle and Gardens and its continued popularity, it remains one of the top things to do in Deal for anyone that loves the Royal family, history, and culture.

On a visit to the castle you can wander through its numerous staterooms and enjoy the eight acres of well-maintained gardens. Entry to Walmer Castle and Gardens costs £12.60 for adults and kids cost £7.60.

6. Betteshanger Park

You’ll find Betteshanger Park in the countryside just outside of Deal. It is a 250-acre park that attracts locals from all over the region, making it one of the best things to do in Deal for people of all ages.

There are a tonne of different things to do in Betteshanger Park, but the most popular is cycling. There are bicycle hire shops around the park giving you the chance to ride around one of Deal’s most beautiful areas in style.

You can hire a bicycle and helmet for £7 an hour along with a £50 cash deposit or your driver’s licence (to guarantee you don’t run off with the bike!).

Betteshanger Park also hosts events throughout the year. You can spend a warm Kent evening watching a film at the open-air cinema or even camp there overnight, beginning in summer 2022.

Betteshanger Park opens from 8am every morning and stays open until dusk, dusk seven days a week. If you love the outdoors, Betteshanger Park is definitely one of the best things to do in Deal.

7. Eat Fish & Chips

Fish and Chips at the British seaside

You can’t visit the English seaside without eating fish and chips!

Obviously, given its seafront location, there are plenty of different fish and chip restaurants in Deal to choose from, but a local recommended that we go to the Sea View, and he certainly wasn’t wrong!

As well as serving up the traditional cod and chips this place serves up a variety of specials, including skate and chips. Skate is a type of fish I’d never heard of, but it was absolutely delicious and I recommend you give it a try whilst in Deal!

You can eat in at their beachfront cafe (which is what we did as it gets chilly on the Deal beachfront in the evenings – even in summer!) or just get your food to take away and eat it on the beach. Just beware of the seagulls!

8. Deal Beach

Deal Beach

Of course, one of the things to do in Deal is to visit the beach in the summertime. The beaches around Deal are some of the prettiest in Kent. When the weather warms up, there is no better place to be than on the shore here!

There are five beaches around Deal, the most popular being Deal Beach, which is located just one minute away from the town centre. The beach is a pebble beach, which is typical for Kent and adds to the town’s English seaside vibe.

Deal Pier is on the beach, so it’s a logical next stop after you’ve spent some time soaking up the sun. The Deal promenade stretches the length of the beach and you’ll pass plenty of wooden fishing boats pulled up on the pebbles as you wander.

A walk along the promenade is a great way to get your bearings in the town, and it offers some of the best photo opportunities in Deal.

9. Visit Deal’s Saturday Market

Every Saturday there’s a weekly market held at the top of Deal High Street with plenty of stalls, including a really great coffee van.

There’s been a market held in Deal since 1699, and there’s all sorts on offer here, from clothes to street food to plants and fresh produce. Some items can be a bit pricey but there are always bargains to be found if you look hard enough. This is one of the best things to do at the weekend in Deal!

10. Drink Craft Beer

Craft beer menu

This isn’t something I expected to do whilst in Deal, but I was very happy to find the Taphouse Beer Cafe!raft beer bar has a tonne of unique options, and you’re welcome to taste as many as you like before you commit to one.

The service here is brilliant, their range of beers is great, and, most importantly, the prices are so much lower than in London!

The bar’s small beer garden is a suntrap, totally sheltered from the coastal wind, and it’s easy to spend a few hours here on a summer afternoon and accidentally lose track of time!

11. Deal Maritime and Local History Museum

This small museum documents the history of Deal and Walmer, including the close connection to the sea Deal has. Inside the museum you’ll find full-size and model boats used in the past as well as the history of the local lifeboat service.

The thing that makes this museum one of the best things to do in Deal is the Deal and Dunkirk exhibition, which shares the story of the Deal men who went to Dunkirk. There’s also an exhibition on the Royal Marines in Deal.

Entry costs £4 for adults and is free for under 18s.

12. Take the Train to Sandwich

Church in the town of Sandwich, Kent

The small town of Sandwich is just a 7-minute train journey away from Deal, so it makes sense to visit both towns during your day trip. It’s one of the best places to visit near Deal!

Sandwich itself offers visitors a taste of mediaeval England, with plenty of pretty buildings. It’s a very idyllic Kent town and makes you feel like you’re in a version of England that time forgot.

The most essential thing to do in Sandwich is, of course, to eat a sandwich there! If legend is to be believed, John Montagu, the 4th Earl of Sandwich, allegedly invented it in the 18th century.

The town celebrates this heritage with the annual Sandwich Festival towards the end of August each year.

Return train tickets from Deal to Sandwich cost £4.20.

How to Get to Deal from London

Getting to Deal from London is very easy, with direct trains running from St Pancras Station to Deal multiple times a day.

The journey takes around 90 minutes each way, and day return tickets cost £35.70. If you book a few weeks in advance you’ll be able to buy two single tickets for much cheaper!

Once you arrive at Deal train station the town centre is less than 5 minutes walk away.

Places to visit in Deal Kent

How Many Days Should I Spend in Deal?

Since Deal is a pretty small town, one day is the perfect amount of time to spend in Deal. Like I said, there’s not a bazillion things to do in Deal, so one leisurely day in town is enough.

I actually stayed in Deal for two full days, which would have been slightly too long if we hadn’t taken the train to another town nearby for a few hours.

However, if you’re happy to use Deal as a base to explore a few other coastal towns in Kent it’d be easy to spend a few days here.

Where to Stay in Deal, Kent

I stayed at this hotel whilst in Deal but I really can’t recommend it. It was like Fawlty Towers! First they couldn’t find our reservation, then our room wasn’t ready despite it being an hour past the check-in time, and then the room was pretty dirty.

Luckily, there are some lovely independent hotels in Deal to choose from that aren’t like Fawlty Towers. I’d just left things until the last minute, so I didn’t have many options. Don’t make the same mistake…

Instead, this seafront hotel looks like a far better option. It has a great rating for its cleanliness, looks super cute and flowery from the outside, and gets top marks for its friendly and accommodating staff. Click here to check prices for your dates!

Whether you’re visiting Deal on a day trip from London, or as part of a longer trip in Kent, I’m sure you’ll have a lot of fun!

Like I said earlier, there aren’t a million things to do in Deal, so in my experience you definitely only need one day there.

That said, it’s still definitely worth visiting Deal to see Deal Castle, hang out at the beach, and wander along Deal Pier!

If you stayed any longer you would definitely have to do day trips to other places in Kent, or else you’d simply run out of things to do!

24 Hour Guide: Things to do in Deal Kent [2023]

I thought it was about time I escaped London for a couple of days. I scanned the internet and Instagram for somewhere I could drive to easily from London and breath in some fresh air and seaside views. My friend and I decided packed up the car and drove to the seaside town of Deal in Kent.

Deal is a town in Kent, England, which lies where the North Sea and the English Channel meet, 8 miles north-east of Dover and 8 miles south of Ramsgate. It is a former fishing, mining and garrison town whose history is closely linked to the anchorage in the Downs.

The town of Deal is very pretty, think Brighton on a much smaller scale and with less trendy people more pensioners. (This is by no means a negative in my eyes). It is perfect for a make-up free, relaxing break.

There are so many things to do in Deal Kent…

friends in deal kent

We drove from Balham, SW London to Deal in just under 2 hours. We decided to stay at The Rose. During such an uncertain time, we were keen to stay somewhere which would be sure to implement safety and COVID measures. It felt almost normal checking in, other than the staff wearing masks and the hand sanitiser on display with the antique furniture. (The new normal right?!)

The Rose is a kitsch hotel just set back from the seafront. It has an electric mix of fabrics, furniture and some bold colours in the bedroom which are ever so stylish. It is the perfect spot for some rest and relaxation. Our room had a stand-alone bath that dreams are made of! The hallways even have bars filled with coffee, tea and whisky in case you fancy a little nightcap.

We arrived in Deal at around 10 am and parked in the local car park which was about 3 minutes walk from the hotel. The car park is £6 a day and takes card payments. We couldn’t check into the hotel until 3 pm, so decided to make the most of it being a beautiful day and walked to Dover, along the coast and stopping for a truly life-changing tuna and cucumber doorstep sandwich and a packet of crisps from the Band Stand Café.

deal kent food

The walk to Dover takes around 2 hours at a moderate pace, but the view is so beautiful that you don’t even realise how far you’ve walked (my apple watch did though!). En route back we stopped at the Zetland Arms for an Aperol, taking in the views and enjoying the fresh air!

We could then check into the Hotel; the process was seamless. The staff have implemented a one-way system throughout the hotel and the rooms and reception area have plenty of hand sanitiser.

We had both our evening meal and breakfast at the Hotel. That’s not to say that there aren’t many lovely restaurants in Deal, but with things as they are, we decided to play it safe. The food was delicious though and the Hotel was taking part in the ‘Eat out to Help Out’ Scheme.

I would recommend the crab doughnuts highly and of course, you can’t have a trip to the seaside without having a portion of chips! The breakfast was included in our hotel stay and you could order anything off the menu.

Its worth noting that a lot of the shops in Deal are closed on a Monday and Tuesday, so check this beforehand. We ended up driving to Broadstairs to check out the sandy beaches and have a Morellis ice cream.

If you decide to go, I would recommend packing some comfy shoes, SPF and a healthy appetite for fish, chips and ice cream!

Then you can either walk back or catch a bus back to Deal.
  • Fish and Chips on the Beach – there are dozens of chippy’s in Deal, the best is Middle Street Fish bar, but do check opening times as these change daily.

The best things to do in Deal, Kent

The best things to do in Deal Kent

As a child, summer holidays guaranteed one thing: long, lazy weeks spent at my grandparents’ farm in St Margaret’s at Cliffe, Kent – and trips into Deal. We’d watch brass bands on the green, eat fish and chips on the beach, and splash around in the public paddling pool. Growing up I came to love the maze of Georgian streets behind the seafront and the strange starkness of the pier (all concrete and steel, it’s never been a funfair-and-candyfloss affair).

My parents still live nearby, so I regularly pop back. Over the years, this little seaside town has morphed into a vibrant, arty hub. While there’s been much fanfare about the transformation of the east Kent coast, particularly of Margate with the opening of Turner Contemporary and Dreamland’s resurrection, Deal has been less shouty about its revival, which has seen a blossoming of independent shops, cafés, galleries and restaurants, and its first boutique hotel, The Rose.

The advent of faster rail links to London (now just an hour and 20 minutes away) brought more capital escapees looking for a great day trip from London , but the changes haven’t sullied the town’s core character. It has a spicy history – a smugglers’ haven in the 17th century, a reputation for lawlessness in the 18th – and it still has a feeling of fierce independence. It will never be twee. The old-fashioned seaside heart beats strong; you’ll find amusement arcades, stalls selling whelks and down-at-heel corners. But most of all it’s a place with a sense of fun and a great base for exploring this charming stretch of coast.

Where to stay in Deal, Kent

The Rose Hotel

Deal has been crying out for a properly good-looking place to stay. At last, The Rose, previously a dive of a townhouse boozer, has been transformed into a grown-up bolthole, splashed with bold colours and covetable vintage finds. Co-owner Chris Hicks – the great-grandson of the brewers who once owned The Rose – ditched the City to revamp the place. The eight rooms have playful touches: record players with vinyl (big tick for Fleetwood Mac and Joni Mitchell) and stacks of art books. The original Fifties panelling remains in the bar and restaurant, where the menu is presided over by Rachel O’Sullivan, formerly of Polpo in Soho and East London’s Towpath Café: starters of roasted heritage tomatoes and cime di rapa with aioli or a Scandi breakfast plate (smoked salmon, avocado, soft-boiled egg, dill and whipped cream cheese).

Picnic favourites at the Saturday Markets

The Saturday Market’s bric-à-brac stalls are worth a rummage, but most come for the epicurean temptations. The Authentique Wines pop-up bar offers tastings from small independent French vineyards – pair with sushi from local fishmonger Jenkins & Son or a cheeseboard from The Kentish Provender. Pick up picnic fodder – doorstep sausage rolls with tomato chutney and old-fashioned coconut macaroons with raspberries, both from Eat & Mess – and head to the pebbly beach. Stop en route for a custardy flan Parisien from brilliant French delicatessen No Name Shop just opposite. Filberts Foods specialises solely in British products: try the Winterdale Shaw cheddar from Sevenoaks and Kernow’s caramel and sea-salt chocolate , handmade in Cornwall.

Frog and Scot: the seafood star

Frog and Scot is an authentic bistro opened by Benoit Dezecot (the Frog) and Sarah Ross (the Scot) in 2016. Their chef was previously at Michelin-starred The Sportsman in Seasalter and his daily changing menu, chalked up on the blackboard, is based on hyper-local produce. Expect dishes such as pan-fried skate with brown butter and cockles or roast saddle of venison in red wine . If you spot crab risotto, order it – the stock alone takes three days to make. Then move on to the couple’s wine bar and shop, Le Pinardier, a few doors down; it’s so French it’s as though you’ve stumbled across the Channel. Most wines are organic and there’s live jazz and blues on Saturday nights.

Stop for lunch at the Popup Café

As the name suggests, the Popup Café, wasn’t intended to be permanent – but a summer experiment took off with such force that the owners recently expanded the space. Everything’s hearty, from a veggie brunch of roasted squash and halloumi, spiced up with dukkah and harissa, to the Moroccan eggs on sourdough (baked on site). The Slow Food Café has a pocket-sized garden, while boho The Black Douglas Coffee House on the seafront serves delicious kedgeree – and is open (and often raucous) on Friday and Saturday evenings.

Visit Deal's pint-sized micropub, The Just Reproach

The concept of taking the pub back to its front-room roots is an east Kent thing, and The Just Reproach is a one-room micropub with no music, no TV – and a fine for talking on your mobile. Up the road in Walmer, The Freed Man, in a former post office, offers the same, but you can bring in your fish and chips or pizza from The Hayman’s Kitchen across the street (and your phone).

5 White Cliffs Coastal Path

England's most charismatic chunks of chalk, chic eateries, boutique sleep spots, history-rich ports and prime golf courses, make this a must-see stretch of Kent coast.

Connecting the vibrant, bustling port of Dover and its iconic, ruggedly beautiful White Cliffs, with the quaint coastal dwelling of Deal and the medieval Cinque Port of Sandwich, White Cliffs Country is a unique destination. Here, striking coastline meets quintessential countryside, ancient history meets modern convenience, and peace and tranquillity meet action and adventure.

White Cliffs Country is proudly home to Kent’s Golf Coast. The latter plays host to The 149th Open in July 2021.

Just a little over an hour from London by train and offering the UK’s shortest ferry crossing from Europe, White Cliffs Country is one of Britain’s best-connected destinations. It enjoys one of the warmest and driest climates in the UK.

Explore the area and discover why kings and queens throughout the centuries have made their homes here; why well-known classical authors were inspired to write their greatest literary works here; and why White Cliffs Country continues to be a destination of choice for visitors today.

14 Things to Do in Deal, Kent

things to do in deal, kent

There are so many t hings to do in Deal , Kent! And if you’re looking for places to visit in Kent or things to do near Canterbury look no further!

Arriving in Deal by train couldn’t be simpler. From the station it’s a short walk down Queen Street which leads into Broad Street. Then, at the bottom, the sea and Deal Seafront are spread out before you! Or you could easily drive. It’s a 45 minute journey from Yorke Lodge via the A2 and A258. Plus there’s plenty of pay and display parking in Deal. Deal is therefore a definite must for things to do near Canterbury!

For railway travellers trains go from Canterbury East. This is a 20 minute walk from Yorke Lodge. You have to change at Dover Priory, but the whole train journey is only 40 minutes. Deal is a small town and everything is within walking distance. The train is thus ideal. However, things to do in Deal include exploring the High Street’s shops. Not to mention a whole array of other unique shops not on the High Street! So you may decide the car is best for transporting your purchases!

1. Deal Castle

Deal Castle was built by Henry VIII. It was one of three fortresses constructed by Henry along this bit of coast line. They were built to ward off the threat of invasion from Catholic Europe. This never happened so they must have worked! Deal Castle is the largest of the three and has changed little over the centuries. Deal Castle is on Prince of Wales Terrace towards the southern end of Deal Seafront.

It’s worth noting that Henry VIII had grounds for his concerns. Long before Deal Castle was built an invading force had landed at Deal. It was around 55BC and the man responsible was Julius Caesar. So you see can’t be too careful when planning your Tudor defences!

For further information about Deal Castle and for opening times visit English Heritage website .

2. The Deal Memorial Bandstand

Continue walking down Deal Seafront with Deal Castle behind you on the right. Before long you will see the Deal Memorial Bandstand. This was opened on 2nd May 1993. It stands on Walmer Green as a poignant and fitting “living memorial”. It was built in remembrance of eleven members of the Band of the Royal Marines School of Music. They were killed by an IRA bomb on 22nd September 1989.

The Memorial Bandstand is a dodecagon. Or a 12 sided polygon. On eleven of the side panels is the name of each Royal Marine who was killed. The entrance to the bandstand is on the remaining side. During the summer free concerts are held here. Walmer Green is a relaxing place to have a picnic while listening to the bands.

3. The Former Royal Marines Barracks and School of Music

The Royal Marines Barrack and School of Music have been converted in to residential housing. The Georgian character of the buildings has, however, been preserved. The magnificent facade of the barracks can be admired from the Strand. The Strand is also home to a variety of shops and cafes. But it’s technically in Walmer!

4. Walmer Castle and Gardens

As we’ve strayed into Walmer we can’t leave without a quick mention for Walmer Castle. It is, after all, one of the top places to visit in Kent. It is another of the three fortresses built by Henry VIII. But unlike Deal Castle Walmer Castle has evolved into a home. It is the official residence of the Lord Warden of the Cinque Ports. The principle rooms and the gardens are open to the public.

Visit English Heritage website for full details

5. Things to do in Deal, Kent – Cycle Routes

Walmer Castle is about a 30 minute walk from Deal Castle. But there’s a lot to see on the way! And not just the Memorial Bandstand and former barracks. The Lifeboat House, beach huts and Sailing Club line the route. Also the ever changing panorama out to sea – including France! However, if you don’t feel like walking you could always hire a bicycle!

There are both local and National Cycle Routes. These head north towards Sandwich and beyond. And south past Walmer towards Dover. By cycling you will find many other places to visit in Kent. And many other ways to spend days out in Kent.

Bicycles can be hired from Mike’s Bikes next to Deal train station.

6. Sandown Castle

From the southernmost extreme of things to do in Deal to the northernmost! In other words from Walmer Castle via Deal Castle to Sandown Castle. This is the third of Henry VIII’s three castles built to repel Catholic invaders. Sadly all that remains today are the castle’s ruins. However, these have been incorporated into the town’s sea defences. So even the castle’s ruins are still offering protection against invasion from the sea! The castle grounds are now a community garden open to all.

7. Deal Pier

Right in the middle of Deal Seafront is the pier. The first pier was a wooden structure built in1838. It was destroyed in a gale in 1857. A new pier, made from iron, opened in 1864. But in January 1940 a mined Dutch ship hit the pier, causing extensive damage. The pier today is 1,026 feet long and is constructed from concrete-clad steel. It was opened on 19th November 1957 by the Duke of Edinburgh. There is a cafe at the end of the pier. Deal pier is also a popular place for fishing.

8. Deal Seafront

Looking back from along the pier you get a magnificent view of Deal Seafront. And there are loads of things to do in Deal on Deal Seafront alone!!

Running parallel to the Promenade is the main coast road gloriously named Beach Street! Because the beach is just there! Many of the houses along Beach Street are Georgian. There are also lots of little lanes running down from Deal Seafront towards Middle Street. The Royal Hotel is between Beach Street and the beach. Lord Nelson and Lady Hamilton visited the Royal Hotel in 1801. Perhaps they were looking for things to do near Canterbury?!

Not far from Deal Castle are fishing boats pulled up on to the beach. After a particularly good catch fresh fish can be found for sale here. There are also little blackboards advertising boat trips. But we can’t leave Deal Seafront without mentioning its shelters. These are iconic but it’s hard to discover their origins! They are Art Deco in style and appear to have been erected in the 1950s.

But, wait, there’s still more to say about Deal Seafront! There are cafes, restaurants, pubs, fish and chip shops and tea rooms. Independent shops, like the Farsi Collection Boutique selling quirky original clothes. Or Pandora’s Box with its promise of “magical seaside gifts”. Just take a stroll down Deal Seafront to find out more…

9. Time Ball Tower Museum

The Time Ball Tower is a Grade II listed building on Deal Seafront. It is believed to be one of fewer than six remaining working Time Ball Towers. Once upon a time there were numerous time ball towers throughout the world’s shipping lanes. Ships relied upon them for an accurate time check. The time balls would fall at precisely 1pm every day. The Time Ball Museum is a fascinating insight into the history of local shipping. And also the development of navigational technology at sea. When the museum is open the time ball is raised every hour.

For opening times and more information visit Time Ball website

10. Deal’s Old Town

The Old Town is packed full of charm and even some intrigue! In addition to the Deal Seafront shops the High Street has more independently owned shops. These include boutiques, gift shops, food shops, vintage and antique shops. This vibrant area is also home to delightful cafes and other tempting eateries.

The undercroft at the historic Town Hall houses the Tourist Information Office. Deal’s town motto is “Adjuvate Advenas” or Befriend the Stranger. And never has a stranger been better befriended than here! Extremely welcoming, extremely friendly and extremely helpful. No matter that enquiries regarding the “Art Deco” shelters could not be answered!

11. Market Days

There are three weekly markets in Deal as well as a monthly Farmer’s market. The weekly markets take place every Wednesday, Friday and Saturday. The smaller Wednesday and Friday markets are held at the Town Hall from 9am-pm. The larger Saturday market is at the Union Road car park from 8am-3pm.

The Farmer’s Market is on Stanhope Road. It’s on the first Saturday of every month from 9.30am-1pm.

12. Middle Street in the Old Town

We have already alluded to Middle Street and to intrigue. Well here the two meet! Smuggling became rife in Deal from the mid 1700s! Deal’s seafaring population was naturally adept at boat building, sailing and fishing. But smuggling was a far more lucrative occupation than fishing. So they put to sea in their boats to catch greater prizes! And Middle Street was at the centre of it all! Many of the houses here still have secret hiding places and old tunnels.

Eighteenth Century Middle Street was a den of iniquity. Smugglers and press gangs rubbed shoulders with prostitutes and murderers. But the authorities were powerless to stop the trade in smuggled goods… Nowadays Middle Street is a quiet, pretty road with fine Georgian cottages on either side. A far cry from it’s 18th and 19th Century notoriety!

13. Deal Maritime and Local History Museum

The museum building itself has a varied history! Originally an industrial building it has been a bicycle store, workshop and garage. It is deep in the heart of Deal’s Old Town on George’s Road. And it gives visitors a chance to explore Deal’s rich maritime history in depth. There is also a wealth of local history on display. From full sized boats to model boats, local art to locally discovered artefacts.

There is an exhibition dedicated to the Royal Marines. Also one telling the story of the local coal mining industry. Oh, and we mustn’t forget smuggling!!

More information is available at their website.

14. The Blue Plaque Trail

This is a guided walk around Deal. It features blue plaques to many of the town’s well-known residents. And also to significant figures who came to Deal to write, paint, compose or simply repose! You can pick up a leaflet from the Tourist Information Office. This will guide you around the 16 plaques and memorials. The walk takes about an hour. But there are plenty of places to stop for refreshments on the way!

All of the above things to do in Deal is walkable from Deal Station. Or bikeable if you don’t fancy the half hour walk to Walmer Castle! But if you do decide to walk there, do it at the end of your visit to Deal. Walmer Station is on the same line as Deal. So you can always catch the train back from there. The Deal Tourist Information Office is a great source of local knowledge. Their “Visitors Guide to Deal Kent” is full of information and things to do in Deal. It also has a couple of handy maps at the back.

So just to recap for days out in Kent and for places to visit in Kent Deal has it all! Also for things to do near Canterbury it’s the perfect seaside retreat!
