Dylan Wood reviews the Head Kore 99 for Blister

[ Editor’s Note : In the interest of getting you information sooner on some of the products we’re reviewing, we’re posting here some of our measured specs and manufacturer details, and will update in the future. What Head says about the Kore 99

“The KORE 99’s superpower is multitasking around the mountain. The ski’s construction reduces weight without sacrificing performance, resulting in a nimble freeride ski. The core’s materials have a high strength-to-weight ratio and include Graphene, Karuba wood and multi layers of carbon. HEAD’s new topsheet shape, a sandwich sidewall construction and tip and tail rocker add hero attributes to the KORE 99: stability, agility and power.”

Flex Pattern

Here’s how we’d characterize the flex pattern of the Kore 99:

Tips: 9 Shovels: 8.5-9 In Front of Toe Piece: 9.5 Underfoot: 9.5 Behind the Heel Piece: 9.5 Tails: 8.5

Similar to other the Kore skis we’ve flexed, the Kore 99 is very stiff throughout the entire ski.

Stay Tuned…

We’ve got the Kore 99 along with several other Head Kore skis in for review. Stay tuned for updates, and let us know of any questions you have about this ski.

Rocker Pics:

9 comments on “2022-2023 head kore 99”.

This is an intriguing ski. However, like many of the Libertys which employ wood and other very light weight materials, I have found these skis to be some squirrelly on uneven terrain compared to a heavier metal laminate ski such as the Volkl line. Am I alone and crazy?

What color is that? Is it a wood veneer or does it come in turd brown?

The top sheet? It is neither, it’s red/dark grey.

This maybe a separate discussion but at some point do we have too many waist variations of the same ski? Like is it really a big deal to either go down to the 93 or up to the 105?

It is definitely impressive how many different waist widths the Head Kore comes in for both the unisex/men’s and women’s lines. “How much of a gap in waist width makes a notable difference” is another can of worms to open, but generally, it’s up to the brand how many different widths they see viable to make, and I don’t see how the consumer having several different waist width options to be a bad thing (unless you struggle with analysis paralysis, I suppose). Specific to the Head Kore line, it is also worth mentioning that the difference between the 99 and 105 is definitely more significant that the difference between the 93 and 99, since the 105, 111, and 117 all have more tapered shapes and deeper rocker lines relative to the <99 models.

I ski western NY and ski west twice a year. I’m a cruiser and ski frontside. Is the best model ski in the Head lineup for me?

There’s a lot about this ski that I think I’d love, including shape, rocker profile and weight.

But SO stiff?!

I usually ski Masters racing skis but have a pair of Nordica Enforcer 100 in 185cm., Nordica Patron 113 in 185cm, and Kore 99 in 177cm. I love carving skis but find the Kore 99 a really fun ski.It is great in chop and loads of fun in 12” powder. On the groomers the 99’s carve reasonably well but are so fast with very little tip flap. These skis are really fun and have become the daily driver for my ski buddy.

I’m on my second pair! Awesome ski!!!

Head Kore 99 Ski Review

At 99 millimeters underfoot, head’s all-mountain ski nicely balances on- and off-trail performance with a light but powerful personality.

Head Kore 99

Price: $699 Ability level: Advanced to expert Dimensions: 134-99-120mm (177cm) What we like: Light and flickable but still strong; excels off trail and in light to moderate powder. What we don’t: Less stable and not as fun on hardpack as others in its width class.  See the Head Kore 99

Head’s 2022 Kore collection covers widths from 87 to 117, and towards the middle of that lineup is the versatile 99. Like the rest of the Kore models, this ski saw a number of changes for this season, including a revised construction, even lighter weight, and a smaller (7cm) gap between lengths. In testing the latest variation, it struck us as a solid 50/50 on- and off-trail ski: it’s still impressively powerful yet light, but it’s not a standout in terms of stability or dampening on hardpack. That said, if you like to pop in and out of the trees, prioritize a nimble feel, and have enough soft snow to justify the wider set-up, it’s a compelling package. Below we outline our experiences with the Kore 99. To see how it stacks up to the competition, see our article on the best all-mountain skis .

Other Versions of the Head Kore

What We Like

  • The Kore 99 is an excellent performer in powder: it’s quick, smooth and easy to control in a range of conditions, and punches above its width in terms of flotation.
  • Light but powerful construction rewards advanced pilots with good pop and energy between turns on hardpack.
  • Chamfered design makes the topsheet less susceptible to premature chipping, and the ski is well-built with high-end materials throughout.
  • Available in a wide range of lengths and widths to fit various riding styles and terrain types.

What We Don’t

  • Stiff design requires strong input to control—especially on hardpack and in the bumps—and is best suited for advanced to expert riders.
  • Noticeably less stable and harder to maneuver than the narrower Kore 93 on firm snow, especially at speed.
  • Polyester fleece topsheet still is thin and prone to showing scratches and cosmetic wear.

Head Kore 99 all-mountain ski (standing on slope)

Next up is Volkl’s M6 Mantra , which was also updated for the 2022 season and boasts a similar personality as the Enforcer above. Similar to the Nordica, the Mantra prefers speed, power, control, and wider turns over the quick handling and superb responsiveness of the Kore. In contrast to the Head, the Volkl rips on groomers but isn’t as maneuverable in tighter spaces, and we’ve found the Head to be the more fun and playful option in powder. In the end, we’d break it down as follows: for hard chargers that like to ski fast, the Mantra is a great match; for those that prefer more well-rounded performance for having fun both on- and off-piste, go with the Kore.

Head Kore 99 all-mountain ski (bootpacking with skis)

Finally, like the Rustler above, Salomon’s QST 98 is a less serious alternative to the Kore. It has a softer front end and more tip and tail rocker than the Head, which translates to easier turn initiation and a smoother ride in general. All told, it’s a ski that has a natural and easy-to-trust feel in a wide range of conditions, although (similar to the Rustler again) you’re not getting top-end stability and can expect some decent tip flap at high speed. If you prioritize quickness, especially in soft snow, the Kore has its appeal. Otherwise, I prefer the friendlier overall personality of the QST—and it doesn't hurt that it comes in around $100 less.

Head Kore 99

The 2024 Head Kore 99 gets a facelift for this year but remains the same great carbon-powered ski that we’ve loved for some time now. With the latest improvements coming last season, the 2024 version benefits from having the highest possible quality so far.

Even when it first came out, there was a sense that this ski is somewhat different—stiff flex, light weight, and maneuverable nature—all combine to make a very well-rounded ski for a broad, yet somewhat specific range of skiers. If that is a bit obfuscated, we apologize, but that’s just how we feel. It’s not for everyone because it’s quite stiff. It’s not for everyone because it’s very light. It’s not for everyone because it can feel pingy if you’re not ready for it. That said, it also has an open range of skier type because many of us enjoy light and quick skis. We enjoy reactivity and agility.

We enjoy the precise and strong feel, even if it doesn’t sound right all of the time. That’s the duality that the Head Kore 99 produces but if you can look past some of the negative connotations, you’re left with a high-performance all-mountain ski that can definitely do it all.

Ski Canada Test 2019 On-Slope Reviews

Even more hard kore.

Head’s Kore series of skis was a hit last year when it debuted in three sizes, 93, 105 and 115. The freeride-inspired construction is lightweight, floaty and intended for ripping groomers. This winter Head is filling the hole in the line with the versatile 99mm width. And it threatens to be the best of the bunch—an all-mountain machine that’s light enough to use as a touring ski. ($824; head.com )

HEAD KORE 99

$824  *  BEST FOR: One-ski quiver for hard-charging western skiers. LENGTHS: 162, 171, 180, 189  *  RADIUS: 17@180  *  SIDECUT: 134/99/120

The Kore skis were unanimously loved last year, but the three available widths (93, 105, 115) left many wanting for something in the middle. Head responded with the 99. It retains all the unique build characteristics of the rest of the Kore family, like Koroyd core, graphene-fused tip and tail, triple weave carbon layer and blended sidewall top cap construction. Long story short, it’s impressively lightweight. But all that goes out the window when you get on this ski, said James Jamieson: “What you will notice is that it’s fun, no matter what terrain you’re riding on. It sticks to the groomers and loves being up on edge. Also has a smooth sweet spot that makes for great butter turns in the trees.” Add some pressure and give in to the fall line and it comes alive. “This ski is fast, really fast,” said Anne Terwiel. “A true ‘send it’ kind of ski. I could just keep amping up the speed and performance and this ski would just keep on matching me.” The new size fills two gaps: a larger-waisted all-mountain option and a powdery ski for technical skiers.

  • Product Description

After a friend and fellow ski tester first clicked into a set of Kore 99s and ripped a lap down the mountain, he looked at me bewildered. “These skis are from the future” were the first words out of his mouth as we got back on the chairlift. A few laps later, after I had taken them for a spin, I knew what he meant. The Kore 99s charge through crud, are easy to lay over and damp enough to stabilize chop. His hot take wasn’t so hot at all.

The original Kore ski was first prototyped in 2016, launched the following season; this year, Head is introducing a completely revamped Kore series. The Head product team has been testing and tweaking all the while, blending different materials and layups, responding to feedback from dealers, ski testers and athletes. New changes for the 21-22 version were imbued into early prototypes before the pandemic and tested in both Europe and North America to ensure their relevance and performance in a range of conditions.

The idea of creating a freeride ski with top-end characteristics and a next-to-none weight penalty is far from a new concept, yet the Kore line is still one of the best. The Kore 99, specifically, is the most versatile in the line, with a personality to sufficiently ski the entire resort, in nearly any conditions, from deep snow in the sidecountry, to springtime corn harvests and slick groomers. Simply said, the Kore 99 strikes a healthy balance between resort and backcountry skiing with an emphasis on weight savings. Starting with the karuba/poplar core, the ski is built with a complex sandwich of high-grade materials, including , carbon fiber and stiff, graphene-insfused fiberglass—the lightest, strongest material on the planet—in the tip and tail, resulting in an amazingly stable and responsive package. Just ask Sam Kuch.

Each ski model has a slightly different makeup, too, which the team calls “different constructions for different conditions.” The narrower skis focus on a robust, stiffer construction that emphasizes responsiveness, stability and edge hold; the wider skis benefit from a softer construction based on playfulness and a surfy feel, specific to softer and deeper snow. The new Kore line of skis doesn’t just vary by dimension, rocker and camber profiles, but also by variations in construction, resulting in purpose-built models within one line of skis. Despite a lengthy development process and the use of futuristic materials, the Head Kore 99 is moderately priced and skis like a dream.

FREESKIER tester thoughts:

“Considerably damper than previous Kore models. Construction feels very planted and stiff underfoot. Skis true to length with a stiff tail that can hold a great carve but still releases easily.”

Quick overview

The Head Kore Tour brings the famous Kore All-Mountain performance to the backcountry. With a super lightweight construction and removed from all unnecessary weight, you’re able to explore further, heading away from the resort and finding lines that lift-reliant riders can only dream of. And after you have flown up to the top, the ski still rips on the way down, lightweight and mighty. The Tour 99 is the widest, most soft snow-focused, in the new family and offers reliable downhill performance in the widest array of conditions.

head kore tour 99 weight

Rocker Camber Small Rise Skis with a rocker in the tip, camber in the middle and a small rise in the tail are very versatile. The ski is easy to turn, and the camber under the foot gives the ski grip on harder snow. The tail is slightly raised, but it is not like a full rocker. This makes for a balanced combination of easy turning and carving, without compromising on stability.

Woodcore The core consists of specifically selected wood types that are laminated in different compositions into a solid core. This gives the designers control over all the characteristics of the ski.

Carbon Carbon is added as a reinforcement to the core. Carbon is light, strong and durable.

Sidewall Construction A PU layer that seals the layered ski construction on the side and adds strength. Skis with a sidewall construction are generally more stable at speed, livelier and more durable.

The ski's construction suits both up and down, thanks to the high strength-to-weight ratio of Graphene and carbon in a sandwich cap construction, plus HEAD's Topless Tech, which shaves weight while providing stability and power. Or, as one tester translates: “Likes an aggressive skier but can get down with a Backseat Betty.” This ski’s versatility comes down to the construction of lightweight caruba wood, graphene, and KOROYD, which makes it effortless yet gives it enough backbone to tackle anything the mountain throws at it.
