Using the alphabet as a compass, his journey celebrates the library as one of the great and necessary institutions. Ellesmere Port is part of this year's 'E to G Libraries'. We're honoured he is coming to Ellesmere Port as part of this year's tour.

The event is free but booking as early as possible is advised. Please book online:

simon armitage library tour 2023

Poet Laureate Simon Armitage is to embark on the next leg of his 10-year tour of UK libraries.

Each spring this decade, Armitage will give readings across the UK, from the flagship libraries of the big cities to smaller libraries serving rural and remote communities. His first tour last year took in libraries in towns whose names started with the letters ’A’ and ’B’

This spring’s ’C’ to ’D’ Libraries Tour, which will run from 24th March to 1st April, launches in Chadderton Library, Oldham, one of the UK’s first Libraries of Sanctuary, and will be followed by visits to Caerfyrddin (Carmarthen), Clevedon, Colyton, Chatham and Clydebank. The week includes a reading celebrating Cambridge University Library’s poetry archive featuring its former poet-in-residence Imtiaz Dharker.

Part of the tour will travel along the route of the mobile library through Càirinis (Carinish) in the Western Isles. The finale, with Hebridean writer and poet Kevin MacNeil, will be co-hosted by Taigh Chearsabhagh Museum & Arts Centre in North Uist. The centre houses a visual arts reference library.

Other guest poets during the week include the National Poet for Wales, Ifor ap Glyn, Scottish Makar Kathleen Jamie, spoken word artists Patience Agbabi, Keisha Thompson and Tawona Sitholé, eco-poet Elizabeth Jane Burnett and four-times Foyle Young Poet winner Phoebe Stuckes.

"My experience of reading and writing began in the village library where I grew up, then in the nearby town library, then in libraries at various places of study and teaching," Armitage said. "For many people they are an invaluable aspect of everyday life, giving access not just to books but to services, learning, conversation and creative thinking. I want to pay my respects to these unique institutions. By planning readings up to a decade in advance I’m being optimistic about the future of our libraries, and challenging those authorities who would consider closing them down.

"It would have been easy to stream these events from my office or garden shed but at a time when libraries are under threat and have been out of bounds during lockdown, reading from inside their physical structures feels like an act of solidarity–with books, with poetry, and with communities."

Armitage will continue to use the alphabet as the framework for the tour. "The alphabet is the DNA of language and gives us the basic building blocks of all literature," he said. "It’s also the system by which many elements of our lives are organised and ordered, not least books on shelves. During the decade-long tour, I also want to find a way of including alphabet letters from other languages spoken in these islands such as Welsh, Urdu or Chinese, and to involve communities where English might not be the first language."

Armitage is also professor of poetry at the University of Leeds and his collections include S eeing Stars, The Unaccompanied, Sandettie Light Vessel Automatic, Magnetic Field and his translation of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight , all published by Faber.

His programme for the laureateship includes the establishment of a National Poetry Centre and the launch of The Laurel Prize, an annual prize for environmentally themed poetry.

Simon Armitage announces H-K Libraries Tour

By Faber Editor, 18 January 2024

simon armitage library tour 2023

Each spring this decade, Simon Armitage will give readings in libraries across the UK, from the flagship libraries of big cities to the smaller ones that serve rural and remote communities. Using the alphabet as a compass, his journey will celebrate the library as one of the great and necessary institutions.

Join Simon on the next leg of his ten-year adventure, from 5–12 March 2024, for a series of free live poetry readings in libraries, with different special guests in each location.

‘I want to celebrate the physical space of libraries and take my work back into places that have given me so much.’

The H to K Libraries Tour launches in Harlesden Library, Brent, and will visit a variety of libraries during the week, calling on the reading group in HMP East Sutton Park Library in Kent, then stopping in Haverfordwest, Pembrokeshire, The Hive in Worcester (renowned as Europe’s first fully integrated public and university library), Kirkcudbright in rural Dumfries & Galloway and Haltwhistle, Northumberland.

The launch at Harlesden Library showcases Somali folklore and history through poetry and dance. Simon Armitage is joined by Asha Lul Mohamud Yusuf and her translator, the poet Clare Pollard, for their bilingual reading from  The Sea-Migrations: Tahriib  (Bloodaxe/Poetry Translation Centre), named Poetry Book of the Year by the Sunday Times in 2018.

The week includes a performance with BAFTA and Grierson-nominated Welsh poet, novelist and playwright Owen Sheers and one of the Representing Wales poets, Bethany Handley, at Haverfordwest’s The Riverside Library. The evening will open the new exhibition that celebrates the life and work of Dylan Thomas, with a particular focus on his poetry and iconic play for voices,  Under Milk Wood . The exhibition is hosted by Pembrokeshire Library Service in association with the National Library of Wales, Aberystwyth.

Other guests reading with Simon along the way include Worcestershire’s current Young Poet Laureate Amelie Simon and Lydia McMillan, one of Scotland’s Next Generation Young Makars.

The tour’s finale on 12 March at Haltwhistle Library is a joint celebration of Northumberland Libraries’ centenary and the tenth anniversary of Northumberland National Park as an International Dark Skies Park. This performance features award-winning poet Katrina Porteous who writes from a deep commitment to place and community, often using Northumbrian speech, and Dr Sheree Mack, the first writer-in-residence at Northumberland National Park.

A Poet Laureate’s love for libraries

Posted by Iain Luxford | Mar 29, 2023 | Education , News | 0 |

Poet Laureate, Simon Armitage, addresses an audience at Eastbourne Library

Written by Elaine Weddle.

On National Poet’s Day, Simon Armitage, Poet Laureate, came to Eastbourne on the latest leg of a UK tour and described the pleasure of visiting his village library and how he now hopes to put something back …

It’s not every day that the Poet Laureate drops into Eastbourne library. On his first visit to the town, the softly spoken Yorkshireman is determined to get a glimpse of the sea despite the drizzle and dark of a March evening “I’m a landlubber,” he explained.

Armitage is an award-winning poet, professor, author, songwriter, playwright, musician, translator and in the last few years an accomplished interviewer of guests, such as JK Rowling, Jo Whiley and the then Prince of Wales in his own Radio 4 series, The Poet Laureate has Gone to his Shed.

E is for Eastbourne

Poet Laureate, Simon Armitage at Eastbourne Library.

Poet Laureate, Simon Armitage at Eastbourne Library.

He accepted the Laureateship in 2019, a ten-year role, but, as he’s quick to point out, there’s no requirement to do anything at all. His tenure was interrupted, as it was so for many others, by a certain virus, but he’s back now making eight or ten visits to libraries each spring, using the alphabet as a compass, travelling to big cities and remote communities.

“I think there’s a tendency among some people to think of libraries as simply a place where books are borrowed and returned, and my feeling is that they are very much more than that. I mean they’re that as well, but I think especially for kids the idea of coming into an emporium that is full of books that you can take away is still quite a magical experience,” he said.

National treasure

Armitage’s smart and witty words about British life, and more often life in the north, has made him a national treasure. The tour is booked out. He treats the Eastbourne audience, sitting in the freshly-painted, high-ceilinged room, to a selection of pieces, including his latest work, Never Good with Horses , and reflects on the difficulties of the last few years.  Finding himself trapped like millions of others within his own four walls, he found himself writing three poems about the window in the roof above his desk.

“We spend too much time in our own cells these days, it’s too easy to live your life from the settee. I think it’s vital we experience other people and learn how to be around them, and I think you can do that in a library. They occupy a really important place in a lot of communities – venues for events, for comings together, for happenings and its where people meet and learn how to behave and acknowledge each other. Libraries are now so welcoming, not hush, hush.”

Libraries a “real lifeline”

A probation officer for eight years in Manchester, Armitage also understands the daily struggle so many people experience: “Libraries are a real lifeline, you can get access to the internet and we all need that now it’s a utility. We sometimes forget how expensive it is to be connected-up with phones and subscriptions and everything else.”

His love affair with libraries began in the village he grew up in, Marsden, West Yorkshire, at a library in the Mechanics’ Institute.  “I remember the little kids’ area and the tiny seat you could pull up next to the shelves. It was strange to know that you could just take a book. I liked folk and adventure stories, magic and mystery. The first poem I wrote as a child was at school about Christmas and it didn’t get chosen as one of the best in class.”

During his time in the prison service, his writing improved “I got better at it, I found it [poetry] compelling and engaging. It was a way of having close contact with the world, describing how the world looks to me through a medium, a way of expressing myself.”

Today, his many roles include Professor of Poetry at the University of Leeds, his advice to students and would-be writers is simple “The trick is to read.  You can’t be a writer unless you’re a reader, it’s like trying to make a fish without knowing what one was.

He concludes: “I’m just supporting the library as a great institution; it’s been under the cosh for quite a few years.  The Laureateship is an opportunity, a mouthpiece, I want to speak up for libraries. It was the birthplace of my reading and therefore my writing I feel as if I want to put something back.”

Laureate's Library Tour

'I want to celebrate the physical space of libraries and take my work back into places that have given me so much.’

Join Poet Laureate  Simon Armitage  and special guest Imtiaz Dharker , Cambridge University Library’s former poet-in-residence, to celebrate historic poetry archives in this unique free event hosted as part of the Laureate’s Library Tour C-D. Both poets will read some of their poems and be in conversation with Cambridge University Library Librarian and Director of Library Services, Dr Jessica Gardner.

Over the centuries, the Library has become a storehouse of poetical manuscripts, holding treasures ranging from unique medieval survivals of a Chaucer poem, to texts by John Donne, Alfred Lord Tennyson and Siegfried Sassoon. Our work in this area is ongoing, and in recent years we have greatly extended our holdings of archives of contemporary poets, including papers of Anne Stevenson, D. J. Enright, George Szirtes, Denise Riley and J. H. Prynne.

Each spring for the next decade, Simon Armitage will give readings across the UK, from the flagship libraries of the big cities to smaller libraries serving rural and remote communities. Using the alphabet as a compass, his journey will celebrate the library as one of the great and necessary institutions.

The C-D Libraries Tour is kindly supported by the T.S. Eliot Foundation, Mark Pigott KBE and Faber & Faber.

Poet Laureate Simon Armitage  was born and grew up in West Yorkshire. He is the recipient of numerous prizes and awards, including the Queen's Gold Medal for Poetry and the PEN Prize for Translation.  He has published over a dozen poetry collections, including  Magnetic Field: the Marsden Poems,  and acclaimed medieval translations of  Sir Gawain and the Green Knight  and  The Owl and the Nightingale .   He is the author of two novels and three non-fiction bestsellers:  All Points North, Walking Home  and  Walking Away .  A regular broadcaster, Armitage presents the popular BBC Radio 4’s series  The Poet Laureate has Gone to his Shed .  He writes extensively for television and radio, most recently for BBC 2’s  Where Did The World Go, A Pandemic Poem.    An award-winning dramatist, his play  The Last Days of Troy  was performed at Shakespeare's Globe. He writes, records and performs with the band LYR and has received an Ivor Novello Award for his song writing. His new book Never Good with Horses (April 2023) will feature his song lyrics. Armitage is Professor of Poetry at the University of Leeds.  A Vertical Art  brings together the vibrant and engaging lectures from his tenure as Oxford Professor of Poetry (2015-2019).   www.simonarmitage.com

She has had eleven solo exhibitions of drawings and scripts and directs video films, many of them for non-government organisations working in the area of shelter, education and health for women and children in India.   www.imtiazdharker.com/

Poet Laureate Simon Armitage embarks on a new leg of his ten-year tour of the UK’s libraries

‘I want to celebrate the physical space of libraries and take my work back into places that have given me so much.’

Each spring this decade, Simon Armitage will give readings across the UK, from the flagship libraries of the big cities to smaller libraries serving rural and remote communities. Using the alphabet as a compass, his journey will celebrate the library as one of the great and necessary institutions.

Join Simon in the next stage of his 10-year adventure for a series of  free poetry  readings live  in libraries.

Armitage says: ‘My experience of reading and writing began in the village library where I grew up, then in the nearby town library, then in libraries at various places of study and teaching. For many people they are an invaluable aspect of everyday life, giving access not just to books but to services, learning, conversation and creative thinking. I want to pay my respects to these unique institutions. By planning readings up to a decade in advance I’m being optimistic about the future of our libraries, and challenging those authorities who would consider closing them down.

It would have been easy to stream these events from my office or garden shed, but at a time when libraries are under threat and have been out of bounds during lockdown, reading from inside their physical structures feels like an act of solidarity –  with books, with poetry, and with communities.’
