Hop aboard the Napa Valley Wine Train for an exhilarating scenic adventure. One of the few vintage passenger trains still riding the rails, this Napa Valley train offers an amazing journey you'll savor for a lifetime.

Ride the Rails Through Scenic Napa Valley

Why not turn the driving over to the train conductor? You can relax and drink in the postcard views for this leisurely three-hour ride through the picturesque valley.

Departing from the McKinstry Street Station in downtown Napa, the wine train runs to St. Helena and back, usually without a stop. However, if you want to visit a winery along the way, some Napa wine train tours include a stop or two.

Five towns in the valley can be seen from the train: Napa, Yountville, Oakville, Rutherford and St. Helena. You'll also spot a number of wineries nestled among the vineyards.

Nearly a century old, the Pullman railroad cars have been lavishly renovated, yet kept their vintage charm.

Traveling through the valley at about 20 miles per hour, the 36-mile round trip is a feast for your eyes and palate.

All trips include lunch or dinner -- with wine, of course.

The dining cars have two seating times for each trip. Guests who dine on the northbound trip will retire to luxury passenger cars to relax and take in the scenery while they enjoy coffee and dessert. Guests in the second seating spend the first half of the journey sipping cocktails and nibbling on appetizers in the passenger cars before heading to the dining cars for the southbound journey.

Choose from three dining cars for unique options...each has its own kitchen and menu freshly prepared by on-board chefs.

The Vista Dome dining car (not shown here) offers the best views from this train, and is beautifully detailed with mahogany and brass.

Lunch tours start about $225, and you'll pay more for special gourmet meals and events. It's pricey, but part of the whole luxury passenger train experience  you'll be telling your friends and family about for years to come.

Travel in Luxury on the Napa Valley Wine Train

Elegant china, polished silver and crisp, white linens offer a nostalgic glimpse of a grand travel-by-rail era.

Do you remember a time when travel was enjoyable and unhurried, not a chore? I don't either. That's why I treasure trips like this, surrounded with glamorous style of a bygone era...indulged with sumptuous food, wine, friendly service...and savoring it all with stunning landscape of the valley.

To me, the Wine Train offers the best Napa Valley has to offer, plus a chance to experience a preserved piece of history.

Uh, oh. I could get used to this.

Taking the Napa Valley Wine Train

napa train trip

The Napa Valley Wine Train runs from downtown Napa to St. Helena and back, serving meals and wine on the trip. Some trips also include winery stops.

The thing the Wine Train does best is to market itself. You've probably heard about it. In fact, if you're like a lot of other people, you may think it's the best thing you could do when you're in Napa Valley. That may be more hype than it deserves.

Despite the romance of the idea, you're stuck inside, looking out the windows, watching the scenery pass as if you were watching television. You can't stop at that cute winery you saw or get out to take photos of the vineyards.

Their food is mediocre at best. They serve two seatings per trip, which means you have to move to or from the dining car in the middle of the trip.

Your time and money are better spent on hiring a private tour guide or touring on your own. However, people with limited mobility or those who care more for atmosphere and selfies than cuisine may enjoy it, and some people find travel by train very romantic.

Reviewers on Yelp seem to like the train — and so do reviewers at Tripadvisor, but many of them rave about their entire trip to Napa and not just the wine train experience.

Tips for the Napa Wine Train

These tips will help you make the most of your Napa Wine Train experience and avoid unpleasant surprises:

  • In the winter months, the sun sets early, and the dinner train travels mostly in the dark. It might be romantic, but don't expect to see vineyards and wineries as you travel.
  • Wine is included only with special packages. Otherwise, you'll have to buy it on board.
  • While the Napa Valley Wine Train claims that tips are optional, what they really mean is that extra tips above their 12% service charge are optional.
  • The Napa Valley Wine Train is 100% non-smoking. That includes the station, train cars and outside observation decks.
  • Casual dress is fine anytime.
  • Children are welcome, but with many restrictions. Strollers and child carriers are not allowed on board. Toilets are tiny, and diaper changing is not permitted in the rail cars. Toddlers may also get restless during such a long trip, and they cannot move around without adult supervision.

Napa Valley Wine Train Options

The Napa Valley Wine Train isn't cheap. A train trip alone is the least expensive way to go. You'll pay more for a meal, and there's an extra charge for the winery tours offered with the lunch trips.

For a dinner trip in the Vista Dome Car, you'll spend as much as you might in a fancy San Francisco restaurant. And that doesn't include beverages, service charges, and tips. For the same price, you could see the scenery on a drive up Highway 29 and back to Napa on Silverado Trail, enjoy a tasting and food pairing at Signorello Vineyards and dine like a king at one of the area's top-end restaurants.

The Wine Train offers a variety of lunch and dinner options. The Pullman cars seat 130 people at a time, with two seatings on the three-hour trip. If you choose this option for an afternoon trip, it's best to get the later seating so you can watch the scenery before the sun sets and eat on the way back.

Other special trips, winemaker dinners, murder mystery trips, full-moon trips, and seasonal excursions are available.

What You Need to Know About the Napa Valley Wine Train

The Wine Train makes four to six trips weekly, but the schedule varies by season. Cost varies by type of trip, and whether you have a meal. You can get their current times and prices on their website . Reservations are required.

You will spend two to three hours on the train, but allow extra time to get there and get on board before departure time. The station is at 1275 McKinstry Street, Napa, CA, not far from the Oxbow Market.

#10: No Matter What You Choose to Do, You Will Be Supporting and Preserving a Piece of History

napa train trip

The Napa Valley Wine Train is not just a delightful gastronomic and visual experience but also a journey through time. The historic railroad, established by Samuel Brannan — San Francisco’s first millionaire — in 1864, was integral to the economic and agricultural evolution of Napa Valley.

However, this significant transportation corridor fell into disrepair in the 1930s after passenger service was discontinued, and Southern Pacific, the company that later bought the railroad, abandoned much of the line.

Despite failed preservation attempts, the heritage of the railroad was revived in 1989 by Dr. Alvin Lee Block and Vincent DeDomenico, former owner of Ghirardelli Chocolate, who established the Napa Valley Wine Train Inc.

Today, the Wine Train is an iconic attraction offering many unique experiences, including elegant evenings aboard luxurious train cars and daytime trips to exquisite wineries.

The Wine Train’s commitment to preserving Napa’s rail line continues with partnerships like Rail Arts District (RAD) Napa and the Napa Valley Vine Trail , ensuring visitors can enjoy the beauty of Napa’s vineyards and gourmet California cuisine onboard for many more years to come .

What to Expect from Your Journey

The Napa Valley Wine Train purchased their first railcar in 1987. All of the cars on this historic train are from 1915. Built by the Pullman Standard Company, they were originally in use by Northern Pacific Railway.

After two years of work, four railcars took their inaugural journey on September 16, 1989.

Napa Valley Wine Train

Today, the Napa Valley Wine Train consists of 16 railcars and 4 engines. Although some people confuse it for a touring train just for wine tasting, it is mainly a restaurant on train tracks that rolls through the valley.

Their Executive Chef and his team prepare all of the meals on board. There are four kitchen railcars.

They serve up dishes with fresh ingredients and offer some of the tastiest meals in the valley. For each meal selection, you will choose from a selection of three to four dishes per course.

Since it is a high-end restaurant, they will work with you if you need modifications for your diet. You just need to let them know ahead of time, so they have what they need on board for your meal. When you enter, just let any of the attendants know which person in your party ordered a dietary specific meal.

The cool thing about this experience is that you also have the chance to watch the chef and his staff in action. The main kitchen railcar has a large window and viewing area, so you can see them create the perfect meal.

What to Expect the Day of Your Journey

Your journey starts with check-in at the Napa Valley Wine Train depot in downtown Napa at 1275 McKinstry St, Napa, CA 94559. Check-in starts 45 to 60 minutes before your journey. Once you are finished with that, you can roam around the historic depot until you hear the boarding call.

They begin boarding about 30 minutes before the train leaves the station. As long as you are still in the depot, you will not miss the boarding call.

Crossing the Railroad Tracks in Napa

Some packages include private tables and others include up to four people at one table. All of the tables are next to the windows, so each seat has an amazing view of Napa Valley.

The experiences vary slightly, but after you are seated, you are welcome to order a glass of wine. Non-alcoholic drinks such as soda and water are included with your ticket price, so you are welcome to order one of those beverages also.

Your journey begins after everyone is on board. During the first 10 minutes, you will roll through the city of Napa. After that, you will be surrounded by vineyards and wineries for the remainder of your journey.

All experiences are round trip, so your journey begins and ends at the Napa Valley Wine Train station in downtown Napa.

Napa Valley Wine Train Experiences

What Should You Wear on the Napa Valley Wine Train?

The Napa Valley Wine Train is an upscale restaurant experience. While they don't have a strict dress code, I do recommend that you dress up a little.

You can wear business casual attire or class it up even more in the evening. If you plan to do one of the trains with the tastings at local wineries, make sure to wear casual or comfortable shoes. You will be standing on and off for up to an hour at a time.

Here are a few more tips on what to expect from the weather throughout the year, so you can pack accordingly.

Is the Wine Train Good for Kids?

If you are planning on visiting Napa with family, you will find that kids are welcome on the Napa Valley Wine Train. There are certain tours that include kid pricing and options.

A couple of things to note if you plan on riding the train with your kids. They do not allow the kids to run around the train and/or be unattended. If you have a little one that has a hard time sitting still, you may want to reconsider this as an option.

I think kids will enjoy it as there are great views out the windows, and who doesn't love riding around on a train!

If you plan to take a trip on the Napa Valley Wine Train, you may be wondering when the best time to go is. The good news is that you can experience the train’s scenic journey at any season of the year. However, certain times offer a more picturesque view and an unforgettable experience.

The train runs throughout the year, but the best times to visit Napa Valley are fall and spring. The fall season, from September to November, is when the grape harvest is at its peak. This time of year is especially scenic, with colorful vineyards and crisp autumn air. You can witness the harvesting process as you ride the train, making it an unforgettable experience. From March to May, Napa Valley is in full bloom in the springtime. The valley is covered in vibrant greens and wildflowers that create a picturesque landscape. You will be mesmerized by the area’s natural beauty as you travel along the train’s route.

While the winter season is also an option, it is important to remember that the days are shorter, and it gets dark earlier. This means you may not be able to see as many of the scenic views on an afternoon train. If you plan to visit Napa Valley, the best time is during the off-peak season. You can avoid crowds during the peak tourist season from August to October and March to May. You can enjoy the valley’s attractions during this time without the high prices and long lines.

In conclusion, Napa Valley Wine Train is an experience you don’t want to miss. While you can ride the train at any time of the year, the fall and spring seasons offer the best views of the valley’s natural beauty. Consider visiting during the off-peak season for a more enjoyable and affordable trip.

The Iconic Wine City In California That Transports You To Tuscany Without A Transatlantic Flight

Sunset over Napa's vineyards

The Golden State has plenty of Italy look-alikes, including the Amalfi Coast of America . However, if you're craving your own "Under the Tuscan Sun" experience without the transatlantic flight, Napa Valley, California is the next best thing! As America's premier wine destination, Napa is no stranger to European influence. In fact, many of the area's first producers came from prestigious wine regions in Europe, including Germany, Switzerland, and, of course, Italy, and they brought their heritage and traditions with them.

Though it has deep roots from throughout Europe, parts of  this wine region resemble Tuscany  specifically. You'll find rolling, sundrenched hills, and a Mediterranean climate, both comparable features to the Tuscan region of Central Italy. The wines produced in both Tuscany and Napa are highly sought after by both experts and simple sippers alike. While Tuscany's claim to fame is no doubt Chianti, Napa has its own renown for varietals like cabernet sauvignon.

With over 400 wineries to choose from, many of which have Italian heritage, and delicious Italian restaurants to eat your way through, a suitable nickname for Napa could easily be "Little Italy". Whether you're a lover of nebbiolo or a crisp pinot grigio, you'll find it in these beautiful hills. For those who do decide to seek out a slice of the Old County in America, you'd be hard pressed to do better than Napa Valley.

Italian-inspired Napa Valley wineries

Scenic landscapes in Napa Valley

Sift through the hundreds of Napa Valley wineries and you'll find plenty of both Italian-inspired vineyards and those with real-deal Italian heritage — even some with Tuscan roots. For example, the modern grandfather of Napa wine (at least post-Prohibition), Robert Mondavi, was the son of Italian immigrants. While Tuscany might be the best destination in Italy for wine lovers , Napa takes the crown in the U.S.A. Start your pursuit of Italian wine at Castello di Amorosa, modeled after a 14th-century Tuscan castle. Stepping inside this winery will have visions of the Renaissance dancing through your head, and you might feel like a Caravaggio painting has come to life while strolling through the cobbled courtyard or the Great Hall.

If you can't get enough, head for V. Sattui next, another great winery with Genoese roots. Sip wine in the shadow of the Italianate tower and munch on charcuterie. Have more time on your hands? Pop in to VJB Cellars. Started by the Belmonte family, this winery is attached to the family's Italian eatery, La Cucina, and a pizza truck is regularly parked outside for nibbles in between sips of Prosecco, barbera, and nebbiolo.

Italian-inspired things to do in Napa Valley

Napa Valley's Wine Train

Continue recreating your dream trip to Italy by swapping out bucket list destinations in Europe for those in Napa. Start by trading the Renaissance daydream of Florence for the equally charming downtown Napa. You'll find boutique shopping, Michelin star restaurants, and tasting rooms that represent some of the best vineyards in the country.

While Euro-trippers flock to the milky blue thermal baths of Saturnia in Italy, you can easily swap this experience for the Calistoga hot springs. A short day trip from the heart of Napa, visitors can choose from full blown resorts to laid back lodges. If you want to keep the Tuscan vibes rolling, pop into the Roman Spa. You'll have three geothermal pools to soak in alongside decadent spa treatments.

For the exercise enthusiast, or those who simply like to cycle, exchange the Chianti Classico bike route for Napa's Silverado Trail. Spanning almost 30 miles from Napa to Calistoga, this is a beautiful way to see the countryside and hop between wineries. Visitors who want to recreate a Eurail trip can climb aboard the Napa Valley Wine Train for an afternoon of sipping vino while the beautiful countryside passes by. You'll cruise along the train tracks as acre upon acre of grapevines drift past outside your window.

I Love Train Travel, and These Trips Are on My Bucket List

These five trains carry you straight to national parks.

Laura Kiniry,

travelers aboard The Rocky Mountaineer

When Amtrak’s Empire Builder train pulled into Montana’s East Glacier Park station, the view was unlike anything I had ever seen. There stood a stunning century-old lodge built from Douglas fir timbers, and behind it, a row of snow-speckled mountains made the grand structure look minute. Above it all hung a sky so big and blue that I simply stared in awe. The magnitude of this magical place at that moment left an indelible impression on me. This was my introduction to Glacier National Park , the Crown of the Continent. It was also my first-ever trip on a long-distance overnight train .

In the decades since, I’ve traveled by train every chance I get: crossing the Australian outback aboard the iconic Indian Pacific, traveling through Norway’s breathtaking fjord landscape on the Flåm Railway and booking a sleeping berth for the nearly 10-hour journey from Bangkok to Surat Thani, a coastal city in southern Thailand. I’ve taken trains on five continents and crossed most all of the U.S. by rail numerous times. I find the rhythm of the tracks relaxing and love looking out the window at what’s basically a real-life moving picture show. There are also my fellow passengers, many of whom love train travel as much as I do. We often spend an hour or two swapping stories about our favorite railway journeys.

While I’ve driven to Glacier National Park a couple of times in the years since that first visit, nothing beats my Amtrak arrival. In fact, the Great Northern Railway built the park’s hotels specifically to house visitors arriving by train. Disembarking at the East Glacier Park depot feels like going back in time to another era, a nostalgic journey that begins the moment you step on the railway platform and continues while you enjoy the park’s glacial lakes and hiking trails.

According to AARP’s 2024 Travel Trends Survey , 63 percent of travelers 50-plus are planning to take only domestic trips this year. Why not do so via train and swap long airport layovers, hefty gas prices and hours behind a steering wheel for jaw-dropping views instead? Now that I’m 50, I prefer this slowed-down form of travel even more than I did a decade or two ago. The seats are often comfy, and with much more space than a typical economy plane ticket, I can get up and stretch as much as I like. Plus, with someone else navigating, I’ve got plenty of time to sit back and enjoy the ride.

Although I can cross the Empire Builder experience off my list, here are some epic train rides I’m ready to explore that take riders right to the doorstep of some of the United States’ most spectacular national parks — which happen to be another one of my favorite things.

aerial view of The Denali Star Train

Denali Star Train to Denali National Park and Preserve, Alaska

As Alaska Railroad’s flagship train, the Denali Star pulls out all the stops along its 356-mile journey — a service that runs daily, from May 9 through mid-September. Of course, the route’s shining star is Denali National Park and Preserve , 6 million acres of remote wilderness filled with boreal forest, alpine tundra and white-capped peaks, reachable in just over six hours from Anchorage, the line’s southern terminus, and less than four hours from Fairbanks in the north.

On a clear day, passengers traveling south of the town of Talkeetna should be able to spot the 20,310-foot-tall Denali — the highest peak in North America — rising above the Susitna River. Although the train’s adventure class offers superb picture window views, the GoldStar Service railway cars feature glass-dome ceilings and an upper-level outdoor viewing platform, ensuring that you’ll have every chance to bask in Denali’s beauty. This premium class also includes a full-service dining room and an onboard Alaskan tour guide who can answer questions like “Is that a black bear or a grizzly?”

For those looking to spend a couple of days exploring Denali, the Denali Princess Wilderness Lodge is just a mile outside the park’s entrance and offers rail tour packages that include transfers and baggage handling to and from the train depot.

Cost: Prices start at $67 for adults in adventure class between Fairbanks and Denali during May and September, then increase depending on the mileage covered, the class and the specific dates (June through August is high season).

cowbgirls and musicians entertain travelers on the Grand Canyon Railway

Grand Canyon Railway to Grand Canyon National Park, Arizona

A ride aboard the Grand Canyon Railway is a journey through the Old West, and one I’ve been itching to take for a while now. Beginning in the town of Williams, Arizona, restored vintage railcars carry passengers on a winding 65 miles toward the South Rim of the steep-sided, river-carved Grand Canyon , traversing high desert prairie and portions of the largest ponderosa pine forest on the planet. Along the way, singing cowboys and cowgirls entertain you, musicians play fiddle and banjo, and an occasional “train robbery” occurs.

Holland America Line

Up to $200 onboard credit on select cruises

The railway features six classes of service, ranging from Pullman class with bench-style seats and open windows to a plush parlor car, serving cocktails and snacks en route. Diesel locomotives do the heavy lifting, though the railway also runs an historic steam locomotive on select dates.

The Grand Canyon Depot is just down the hill from the El Tovar Hotel , which sits perched on the canyon’s rim. Or opt for a railway getaway package that includes a night at the Grand Canyon Railway and Hotel in Williams, with free time to explore the canyon.

Cost: Adult fares range from $70 (Pullman class) to $240 (parlor), depending on the class.

Amtrak’s Empire Builder traveling in the snow

Amtrak Empire Builder to Glacier National Park, Montana

Amtrak’s northernmost long-distance route — and in my experience, one of its most spectacular — offers passengers the best of the American West, with views of the mighty Mississippi, North Dakota’s wide-open plains and Montana’s Big Sky country. Trains originate in Chicago in the east and both Seattle and Portland, Oregon, in the west, the latter two meeting up in Spokane, Washington, and reaching Glacier National Park in the morning. Although the seats in coach class are comfy, book an en suite Superliner bedroom — complete with complimentary meals and seating that transforms into overnight berths — for the full experience.

Passengers can disembark at Amtrak’s West Glacier station or East Glacier Park station, both of which offer lodging (West Glacier has the bulk of the options) and bookable activities like a ranger-led hike from Lake McDonald or a full-day tour aboard one of the park’s classic red “jammer” buses.

Cost: Ticket prices vary according to the day, length of trip and class of travel, but Amtrak offers a 10 percent discount on all routes for people 65 and older.

Rocky Mountaineer’s Rockies to the Red Rocks train

Rocky Mountaineer to Moab, Utah

The Rocky Mountaineer’s Rockies to the Red Rocks route takes passengers into the heart of the American Southwest, traversing past deep canyons, rising archways and dramatic desert landscapes before reaching Moab, Utah, the gateway to both Arches and Canyonlands national parks. The two-day trip — which launched in 2021 and has been on my wish list ever since — can begin in Denver (though it’s offered in both directions). The train travels alongside the Colorado River and toward the Continental Divide before reaching Glenwood Springs , Colorado, a town famous for its hot mineral waters, where travelers stay overnight. Starting the following morning, the train passes through colorful canyons and by sandstone peaks en route to its final destination.

Both breakfast and lunch onboard the train are complimentary and include ingredients that are locally sourced. What’s more: Meals are delivered right to you, so you can savor coffee, croissants and picture window views without leaving your seat. An onboard host shares facts and tidbits about some of the region’s most majestic sights — such as 6,765-foot-tall Mount Garfield, a landmark of Colorado’s Grand Valley — as you go.

The Mountaineer also offers longer-stay package deals, including a two-night in Moab combo.

Cost: While prices for tour packages depend on the date, the Denver to Moab train starts at $1,699 per person.

Aerial view of the Gateway Arch in St. Louis

Amtrak Lincoln Service to Gateway Arch National Park, Missouri

It’s about a five-hour journey between Chicago and the country’s smallest national park: the 91-acre Gateway Arch in St. Louis. Consider splurging on business class for the 284-mile journey. Not only do the seats have a bit more legroom but tea and coffee are complimentary and you’ll have a dedicated Amtrak service attendant.

Catch a morning train and you can make it to Missouri’s second-largest city around noon. Spend the afternoon exploring the Gateway Arch — a 630-foot-tall concrete and steel icon built as a monument to westward expansion — and its surroundings. These include the Explorers’ Garden, brimming with plants such as wild onion, purple coneflower and yarrow detailed by Lewis and Clark in their expedition journals.

Just under 1.5 miles from the park, the St. Louis train depot is an easy distance to the Hilton St. Louis at the Ballpark, a great place to bed down. Some rooms even offer views into Busch Stadium, where you can catch a home game for Major League Baseball’s Cardinals.

Note: Amtrak’s Lincoln Service uses the same route as its Texas Eagle, which I first took years ago between Chicago and Austin, Texas. This stunner of a train ride continues west from Texas to Los Angeles.

Cost: One-way coach-class tickets can be as low as $25 midweek, with business class starting at $65. Amtrak offers a 10 percent discount on all routes for people 65 and older.
