  • HTML5 Version Optimized for Tablets & Desktops The Villanova University virtual tour and interactive map are constructed on the new CampusTours Anytour 3.0 Platform allowing for HTML5 output for tablets and desktops . Why is this important? Imagine for a moment that you are a prospective student, just beginning your college search, and you've picked up the family iPad to research colleges. At some college Web sites, the schools will attempt to force you to download an app onto your iPad to view their tour experiences - something students admit they are unlikely to do for each and every college they consider. Schools like Villanova have experiences that play immediately for the visitor, without the need for an app download.
  • HTML5 Version Optimized for Smartphones CampusTours Anytour 3.0 Platform includes an HTML5 output option for small screen devices like smartphones, iTouch and other Web enabled devices with screen sizes smaller than seven inches.
  • Global Positioning System (GPS) Integration for Smartphones and Tablets CampusTours Anytour 3.0 Platform is GPS-enabled, allowing visitors to your campus to walk the campus with GPS-equipped smartphones and tablets, and obtain content on buildings or facilities as they approach those locations.
  • Photorealistic Interactive Campus Map Villanova's Virtual Visit features a lush photorealistic campus map , allowing students and their parents to explore the campus and learn about the institution's world-class facilities. Interactive campus maps allow institutions to showcase their facilities making the campus accessible and fun to explore for visitors. Villanova University may add to or update the maps, map layers and map content at any time with the CampusTours AnyTour software.
  • Campus Walking Tour with GPS Integration A campus Walking Tour gives visitors a short guided introduction to Villanova and allows on-campus visitors to wander the campus and have tour stops offered to them based on building proximity.
  • Tour Personalization The Villanova Virtual Visit is one of the first virtual college tours to feature advanced personalization in which recommendations are made to visitors based on their chosen visitor type and collaborative filtering of similar tour sessions. Click the 'My Experience' button to access tour personalization.
  • Intelligent Inquiry Forms Generating student leads is one of the major goals of any virtual college tour, and the Villanova Virtual Visit contains an advanced inquiry management system that allows Villanova to track and report on information requests.
  • University Timeline For parents and alumni, Villanova also offers a detailed timeline of university events , allowing visitors to immerse themselves in the rich history of Villanova University.
  • Content managed virtual tours The CampusTours AnyTour platform includes full content management capabilities allowing Villanova University to update any piece of content in the application (including videos, photos, panoramic images, text, menu items, map artwork, map hotspots, layers and much more) at a moment's notice.
  • InteractiveVideo Technology Using CampusTours' content-managed InteractiveVideo technology, the Villanova University tour videos contain cue points that allow users to explore the topics discussed in the videos. Breaking videos into shorter thematic chapters and then integrating InteractiveVideo cue points into the videos allows organizations to add depth and granularity to their presentations.
  • CommentaryInContext When CampusTours conducts tour focus groups, students increasingly say that they want to hear from current students about their experiences at the institutions. CampusTours CommentaryInContext allows schools to augment university videos with informal commentary snippets that expound upon the topic of the current tour section, and give prospective students a glimpse of real college life. There are more than five hundred (500) individual commentary videos in the Villanova University virtual tour.
  • Accessibility Tags Accessibility tags within the content management system allow for precise tagging of all tour graphical items and content for delivery to screen-reader equipped computers.

Road trip to Villanova, Lehigh and Lafayette

Hi there, We are planning a “road trip” over Easter weekend to see Lehigh, Lafayette, and Villanova. We have tours booked for two of these (one on Saturday and on on Monday). Unfortunately, Villanova has no “official tours” due to Easter week, so we will do a self guided tour there on Saturday. We plan to drive from Boston, but would be curious of any suggestions on how to nagivate this…are we best to drive or fly and rent a car? What would you suggest for places to stay? Any insights at all would be appreciated!

When we visited Villanova and Lehigh we stayed in Philadelphia. We found an AirBnB near the Thomas Jefferson Med School/Hospital complex. It was very quaint and historic and had a great loft. We drove our own car and had no trouble getting around, though parking in Philly was complex.

We did not see Villanova but did see Lehigh and Lafayette, drove from Upstate NY over spring break and also saw a few others. We stayed at a Holiday Inn Express in Bethlehem. If you are looking for restaurant recommendations, I suggest Fegley’s Brew Works in Bethlehem or Cactus Blue in Bethlehem, if you like Mexican.

I would drive. If your scheduled tour at Lehigh or Lafayette is in the afternoon, you could drive to Villanova on Friday, self tour Villanova in the morning, drive to Lehigh/Lafayette in the afternoon and then stay overnight in Bethlehem or Easton. Then, check out the area on Sunday and do your second scheduled tour on Monday.

I grew up in the Lehigh Valley and my parents lived in the area until recently. If you need a lunch near Lehigh, I recommend sandwiches at the Gooseman downhill from campus. You can walk or take a tour of Historic Bethlehem across the river from Lehigh.

A little bit of driving but with your scheduled tours on Sat and Monday, you might want to consider doing your first tour on Sat, then driving and spending the night at Villanova (Randor Hotel Inn at Villanova, or look at the Marriots in Conshokoken. Have dinner in Wayne PA or in Bryn Mawr then self tour Villanova on Sunday. If you feel adventurous you can easily take a tour through Bryn Mawr, Haverford or St Joe’s if there is any interest. Then head back to Bethlehem Sunday night for the tour on Monday

I was literally typing something very similar to @Novacat9191 . I think that’s a good plan.

If you want to get into Philly, it’s a 20 min. ride. I wouldn’t fly for this itinerary…it doesn’t work well with the Sat/Mon tours up north.

For the drive home on Monday, I’d take the long way and avoid the Geo. Washington Bridge or the Tappan Zee/Mario Cuomo Bridge. Head a little bit north and cross the Hudson at the Beacon Newburgh Bridge on I-84. Then a straight shot until the Mass Pike.

Second The Goose in Bethlehem for a good cheap lunch.

DD is a first year Villanova student in VSB and also tour guide. There is a “Villanova University Guides” app that has a self-tour of Villanova University with map, recommended route, photos, linked videos and other information you might find helpful.

Grounds

Our grounds department has been a long time supporter of caring for our campus in a way that reduces waste, chemical use, and invasive species. Throughout the years grounds has adopted a number of programs to help achieve a more natural campus experience. Integrated Plant Management is the first defense against avoiding pest infestation that focuses on plant health by using native plants, appropriate plant placement, and nutrient management.

When more action is needed to manage pests we utilize Integrated Pest Management, looking to reduce the need for pesticides by raising the threshold for chemical application and taking time to accurately identify a pest infestation. Because native plant species are used primarily across campus, the need for regular irrigation is drastically reduced, with the softball and soccer fields being the only areas that are regularly watered.

To keep the plants healthy, organic fertilizer and compost tea have been used for the past 20 years, reducing our need for synthetic chemicals. Additionally, we compost all of our yard waste on site and use the finished compost across campus to help off-set the need for purchased nutrient supplements.

BeeProtective

In April 2017, Villanova was designated a Tree Campus USA School for its dedication to the preservation and management of our unique variety of campus trees, and engagement with the Villanova community through recurring campus tree tours. Tree Campus USA is run by the Arbor Day Foundation, and includes 365 schools from 47 states, Washington D.C., and Puerto Rico.

Tree tours are held during events like Parents Weekend, Reunion Weekend, Sustainability Week, or Earth Week by Hugh Weldon, the campus horticulturalist. Campus visitors are also able to embark on a self-guided campus tree tour through the use of our campus tree map, which features 35 unique tree species!

VUSustainability

Villanova University, as a community of learned and learning scholars, respecting the sacredness of all creation, accepts its responsibility to the integrity of Earth and its biodiversity, to the heritage of future generations, and to the security of nations. By utilizing the Augustinian values of Unitas, Veritas, and Caritas , meaning love thy neighbor , promote community unity , and live life in moderation through our curriculum, work environment, and operations, Villanova’s approach to sustainability exemplifies an emphasis on social justice and community service.

September marks Underground Railroad Month and to remember the role Louisville and southern Indiana played in the 19th century, Frazier History Museum has released a self-guided walking tour, "The Journey."

Mike Sullivan, the curator of guest experience at Frazier History Museum, said the goal of the tour is to help people discover the stories that they would otherwise not hear.

"We feel like there are so many stories. There are so many important, surprising, memorable and revolutionary stories that don't often get told," said Sullivan.

The tour highlights landmarks that played an important role in the Underground Railroad and the promise of a new life.

New Albany Church

People are able to follow along with the story of Thornton and Lucy Blackburn, a married couple who made a plan to get across the Ohio River to freedom. The couple eventually made their way to Toronto, where they made an impact for years to come.

The tour features six stops, four in Louisville and two in southern Indiana.

"Their story played this international role. There's international court cases, and their imprint is still felt dramatically in the city of Toronto. But, it all began here in Louisville," said Sullivan.

Some of the stops include the Belle of Louisville, On the Banks of Freedom Benches and Second Baptist Church, formerly known as Town Clock Church, where you can tour the Underground Railroad system that the Blackburns used.

You can find the link to the walking tour here . The tour is free for anyone to partake in.

book a superior experience at Villa Mosca. It is a prestigious art nouveau residence. Located on the Lungomare Dante, right on the beachfront, surrounded by lush grounds and overlooking the sea, it towers above the gulf of Alghero.

I contacted Mauro to arrange a self guided bike trip. I had an excellent e-bike and my husband loved the road bike provided for us. The planning was made easy by BTS staff whom made excellent suggestions and answered all my questions by email efficiently and quickly. His hotel choice was good to exceptional – especially our first hotel – Villa Mosca – in Alghero! Each day our luggage was transferred and in our room at our next destination before we were there! I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Mauro and Bike Tour Sardinia to anyone. We’ve done several other tours with other companies and this was definitely the best one yet! We would like to return to Sardinia one day! Stunningly beautiful island, wonderful friendly people, and excellent food and wine!

Beautiful landscape, unique boutique hotels, great food and wonderful biking, basically describes our experience with Bike Tour Sardinia. We went from Alghero to Oristano, exploring the medieval towns and coast. Mauro arranged a relatively seamless and fabulous self-guided adventure, being consistently available, helpful and responsive. We had both e-bikes and standard, but for me, the e-bike added ease and the ability for further exploration and smiles. I highly recommend Bike Tour Sardinia as a way to explore this beautiful island.

Self-Guided Tour: September 2024

Edibles in the garden.

“The single greatest lesson the garden teaches is that our relationship to the planet need not be zero-sum, and that as long as the sun still shines and people still can plan and plant, think and do, we can, if we bother to try, find ways to provide for ourselves without diminishing the world.”

― Michael Pollan, The Omnivore’s Dilemma: A Natural History of Four Meals

On this self guided tour through VanDusen Botanical Garden, we take a look at some of the plants in our collection that produce edible seeds, berries and fruits. Many of these fascinating plants have been used for food and medicine throughout history in different parts of the world by humans, birds, and other animals.

Begin the tour from the plaza and walk towards the wooden bridge to your left as you face livingstone lake. stay right and continue along the edge of the lake where you will see 1 – a bollwiller pear (× sorbopyrus auricularis ) . this tree is an intergeneric hybrid, or a cross between two species in different genera. the parent species are common whitebeam ( sorbus aria ) and european pear ( pyrus communis ). bollwiller pears were introduced in europe in the 17th century but were not planted in north america until the 1950s. they produce yellow-orange, rounded fruits that resemble apples more than pears. a bollwiller pear tree can take up to ten years to produce fruit, so are rarely grown commercially.  , proceeding along the shore of the lake you will soon come to 2 – wineberry ( rubus phoenicolasius ) , native to china, japan and korea.  wineberry is in the same genus as red raspberry ( rubus idaeus ), and the two species share some characteristics: both have silvery-white underleaves, and a cone-shaped core, or receptacle, that remains on the stem when the ripe berry is picked. both have thorns.  unlike raspberry, the canes, petioles and sepals of wineberry are covered in fine red hairs, giving the entire plant a reddish hue. wineberries have similar health benefits as raspberries and are a good source of vitamin c, antioxidants, minerals, and fiber. in addition to fresh eating, wineberries make great preserves, pies, and other desserts., next up is 3 – the medlar ( mespilus germanica ) . these trees are native to southwest asia and southeast europe. the apricot-sized fruit resembles a rose hip. they have been eaten in europe since greek and roman times.  before consuming or cooking, medlar fruit must be allowed to blet, or soften. freshly picked medlar fruit are placed, flowering end face down, not touching each other, on a clean, dry surface, and left until they turn a deep brown and are soft, almost squashy, to the touch. the flesh has a custard-like texture and a taste described as “apple butter with notes of cinnamon and vanilla.”    , growing just above and behind the medlar is 4 – a large quince tree ( cydonia oblonga ) . it is a deciduous tree that bears hard, aromatic, bright golden-yellow fruit, similar in appearance to a pear, with a tart, astringent flavour. they are eaten raw or processed, again after bletting, into marmalade, jam, or a paste known as “quince cheese”. in europe, quince is used to make a fruit brandy called “rakija” in the balkans and “ eau-de-vie ” in france.  , next up is 5 – a sargent’s crabapple ( malus sargentii ) , a member of the rose family (rosaceae) native to china, korea and japan. this small tree or large shrub has abundant, fragrant white flowers in spring, and tiny, round, red, sweet fruit in the fall that birds love.  , at the end of the path through the black and gold garden is 6 – the black chokeberry ( aronia melanocarpa ‘autumn flame’) .  black chokeberry can be used as an edible fruit crop, although the fruit is too astringent to eat raw. the high-antioxidant fruit is used in baking and to make jams, jellies, syrup, tea, juice and wine. the fruit can persist into winter and serves as a food source for birds and other wildlife.    , go right at the next intersection. you are now in the mediterranean garden. on your left are 7 – two strawberry trees ( arbutus unedo ) , native to western europe and the mediterranean basin, but grown here on the west coast as a garden plant that can often withstand cold down to -10 ° c . the fruit ripens bright red and contrasts beautifully with the dark green foliage. as an edible, its fruit replicates the flavour of apricots and guavas and is used in preserves, syrups and fruit wines. the strawberry tree has major ecological significance as a food plant for bumblebees and also provides health benefits for pollinators. a recent scientific study shows that the nectar contains chemical compounds that can combat a common and harmful bumblebee gut parasite.    , facing the strawberry trees, immediately to your left, is a mulch path leading down the slope toward the pond. go down this path a few paces. on the right, leaning towards the water, is 8 – an italian stone pine ( pinus pinea ) . native to the mediterranean, it has been cultivated for its edible seeds, or pine nuts, for more than 6,000 years. the cones are harvested and placed in burlap sacks for 20 days, then smashed. the nuts are then separated by hand, a labour-intensive activity that explains why these nuts are so expensive. they are very nutritious, containing essential fatty acids, minerals and vitamins.  , proceed to the main path ahead, turn right and return to the visitor centre. cross the plaza in front of the building to return to where the tour began at the bollwiller pear tree.  instead of going right along the lakeside as you did before, go up to the left. continue to go straight ahead, past the formal rose garden and bedding plant display to the start of the rhododendron walk. stay on the rhododendron walk and go straight ahead until you come across expanses of green 9 – redwood sorrel ( oxalis oregana ) which often reminds people of shamrocks. the leaves of redwood sorrel are used in salads, as edible decoration or to make a refreshing sour drink. the green seed capsules can be eaten raw and have a taste similar to rhubarb. the plant is also used in traditional medicines as a diuretic and to treat fever and scurvy., a little further along the rhododendron walk is a grouping of 10 – ostrich fern ( matteuccia struthiopteris ) .  this is a deciduous fern, and in spring, new fronds emerge in tight coils called fiddleheads.  the fiddleheads of some fern species are toxic, but ostrich fern fiddleheads are considered a delicacy. they are best when tightly closed and cooked much like you would asparagus.    , the next sighting 11 – is wasabi ( eutrema japonicum ‘mazuma’ ) from the mustard family (brassicaceae) . this plant grows naturally along stream beds in mountain river valleys in japan.  it is cultivated for its rhizomes, which are ground into a paste as a pungent condiment for sushi and other foods. wasabi is known for its unique, complex flavor with fragrant peppery heat, followed by a smooth, sweet finish. the heat is similar to horseradish or hot mustard, rather than chilli peppers, because it stimulates the nose more than the tongue. true wasabi paste is quite expensive, and the “wasabi” found in most sushi restaurants is generally made of horseradish dyed green with food colouring.   , continue along the path until you reach the giant red chairs and turn left. walk to 12- the bc heritage apple orchard . this orchard contains heritage varieties from bc’s oldest domestic apple orchards.  read the interpretive signs to learn more about the different apple varieties.    , just up from the orchard is 13 – the new garden lab , an educational space where students can gain hands-on gardening experience.  read the interpretive signs to learn more and take a look at the different themed planters if there are no classes in session.  , finally, on our last stop, walk up past the maze and above the stone garden to 14 – a collection of plants from west, central and south asia near the top of waterfall.  one of the plants is green cardamom ( elettaria cardamomum ), an herbaceous perennial plant in the ginger family (zingiberaceae) , native to southern india.  green cardamom is a versatile spice with a sharp, strong, punchy aroma, used to flavour curries, daal, puddings and teas. another member of the ginger family, turmeric ( curcuma longa ), has rhizomes that are eaten fresh or boiled, dried, and ground into a deep orange-yellow powder commonly used as a colouring and flavoring agent in many asian cuisines, especially for curries, as well as for dye. turmeric powder has a warm, bitter, black pepper-like flavor and earthy, mustard-like aroma.  , the sacred fig ( ficus religiosa ) belongs to the mulberry family (moraceae).  sacred fig has a religious significance in four major religions that originated on the indian subcontinent: hinduism, buddhism, sikhism and jainism. it is also used in traditional medicine for about fifty types of disorders including asthma, diabetes, and various digestive issues.   , this concludes the self-guided edible plant tour. please continue to explore and enjoy other parts of the garden.  .
