Shimla – A Complete Travel Guide & Itinerary

shimla

If one was to prepare a list of the favorite and most visited tourist destinations of our country, Shimla will definitely be at the top of that list. This small hill town has enjoyed the status of being the favored one for almost 2 centuries now. British arrived here in the early 1800s and liked the place so much that they declared it as their summer capital in 1864. They even took all the hassle of building a railroad to Shimla.

The British left a long time ago but Shimla still continues to enjoy the same status. The beauty of this place is no less than it was a century ago, and still attracts thousands of tourists each year from all parts of the country.

If you too were thinking of visiting Shimla in the near future, then in this article I will provide some quick tips on how to plan a trip to Shimla. Your final travel plan will of course depend on several factors like how you are traveling; how many days you have in hand; the time of your trip but I will add a few things in this article which will remain the same irrespective of all these.

Quick Navigation

About Shimla

Shimla, also known as Simla, is the capital and the largest city of the Indian state of Himachal Pradesh. It gets its name from Shyamala Mata, an incarnation of the goddess Kali. A temple, dedicated to the goddess and named Kali Bari temple, is situated near the Ridge.

The town is located at 2,276 meters (7,467 ft) and is fondly called the ‘queen of the hills’. Before independence, it served as the summer capital of British India. After independence, it became the capital of Punjab and then finally the capital of Himachal Pradesh after the state came into existence.

Reasons to visit Shimla

What makes Shimla a desired destination for thousands of people however is because it is perfect for all kinds of vacations. From honeymooners to adventure seekers to families, the city serves as a charming retreat to a large number of people. The enchanting beauty of this hill station has attracted countless filmmakers and cinematographers. This erstwhile summer capital of the British, still retains its colonial-era charm through its spectacular historical churches and institutes, like Christ Church, Indian Institute of Advanced Study, and many more.

It is very well connected by road so getting here is not a problem. You never really go too remote and the famous market of Shimla is perfect for an evening of shopping around. Every modern-day facility is available here including good hospitals in case a medical emergency came up. All cell phone networks work in Shimla so you remain connected with your family and friends all the time.

Another great reason is the vast choice of accommodation choices available. No matter what your budget is, you will easily find a place to stay in Shimla. While the overall altitude of the city is enough to make it snow here, you never really climb up to a level where it becomes uncomfortable; or where you run a risk of suffering from acute mountain sickness. In short, it is a perfect destination to go to with family and also for a quick weekend getaway with friends.

how to reach shimla

How to Reach Shimla

Reaching Shimla will really be the easiest part of your vacation here. The city is very well connected and you can reach either by road, air or train, depending on your own preference.

How to reach Shimla by Road

Let us first take a look at how you can reach Shimla if you were traveling by your own car or motorcycle. For the sake of explaining the route, I will assume that you were starting from Delhi. Even if you were coming from a different city though, only the journey till Chandigarh may change. The rest of the details will still apply.

Starting from Delhi, the route of the journey will be as mentioned below.

Delhi  – Panipat – Karnal – Ambala – Zirakpur – Panchkula – Kalka – Kandaghat – Shoghi – Shimla

The total travel time will be about 7-8 hours, depending on your speed and breaks. From Delhi, you will follow NH1 until Chandigarh. Do not enter the city though. Just before Chandigarh, turn right towards Kalka on Himalayan Expressway and follow the uphill road to Shimla.

This entire road remains in good condition all year. There is some road widening work happening between Kalka and Shimla due to which you may encounter some slow traffic. Once this work is completed, the entire road to Shimla will be a 4 lane highway, can you believe it?

How to reach Shimla by Bus

Shimla is very well connected by a regular bus service. There are daily buses available from almost all major cities in North India and finding one will be really easy. HRTC and HPTDC operate daily buses from Shimla to places like Delhi, Chandigarh, Jaipur, etc, and vice versa. Other state transport agencies as well as private travel companies also provide regular buses. Just do a Google search and you will get plenty of options.

If you were coming from Delhi, you can board an overnight air-conditioned luxury bus from ISBT Kashmiri Gate, or may even catch a daytime bus.

How to reach Shimla by Train

An even fun and better way however will be to get here by Train. Yes, I am referring to the famous toy. You can reach Kalka by either a train from Delhi or Chandigarh and then board the Toy Train. The entire journey is on a narrow-gauge rail track, covering a distance of 96 kilometers in about 7 hours. For more details, please take a look at How to Plan a trip by Shimla Kalka Train .

If you do not want to travel by this train, you can reach Chandigarh instead. From there, either board a Bus or hire a private taxi.

How to reach Shimla by Flight

Jubarhati, which is about 23 kilometers from the town, is the nearest airport to Shimla. There are regular flights going from Jubarhatti to Chandigarh and Delhi.

Other than Jubarhatti, Chandigarh is the next nearest airport.

Best way to reach Shimla

The best way to reach Shimla would be to travel by your own vehicle; either by a motorcycle or Car. The condition of the road, as I mentioned, is very good and it takes you through some really stunning landscape. You can take as many breaks as you want, travel at your own pace and enjoy the scenery.

What to See in Shimla

Shimla has a long list of tourist attractions. You can spend days here and still not be done with it all. Some places are right in the town whereas some others are at a little distance, like Kufri. If you drove a little further, you can even visit places like Narkanda and Thanedar , that are equally beautiful and even quieter than the main town.

I have covered the topic of sightseeing in a different article, Complete List of Tourist Attractions in Shimla and its Vicinity , that I will urge you to read. Adding all of these details here on this one page would have just rendered this article endless.

Places to visit in Shimla

But for a brief summary, below are some of the best places you can visit during your trip.

  • Mall Road: Main shopping street is known as “The Mall” or “Mall Road”. It is more or less the center of all activity here and runs as the town’s lifeline. Cafes, restaurants, and social hangouts on Mall Road are especially popular with locals and tourists alike.
  • Christ Church: It is the second oldest church in Northern India, dating back to 1857. Situated on The Ridge, it is one of the prominent landmarks of Shimla and a fine display of neo-Gothic architecture.
  • Scandal Point: It is known so because this is where the Maharaja of Patiala had eloped with the daughter of the British Viceroy. Back then, it was the scandal of the highest order.
  • Jakhu Hill: The highest peak around Shimla, at a height of 8,000 ft, offering a magnificent view of the valley around.
  • Shimla State Museum: Full of several ancient artifacts displaying the cultural wealth of Himachal Pradesh
  • Statue of Lord Hanuman at Jakhu Hill: This 108 feet tall statue stands at a height of 8,500 ft above sea level.

Things to do in Shimla

Other than visiting all of the places mentioned above, here is a list of some other activities that you may indulge yourself in while visiting Shimla. I am not including things like hiring a cab and drive an hour to visit a nearby place, but things that you can do while staying in the town itself.

Take a Walk on The Ridge:  The ridge is an area near Jhaku Hill and the Observatory. This is the place where Shimla’s fairs, festivals, and functions are held. Tourists come here to see several colonial-style buildings, a church, a library, and a statue of Mahatma Gandhi.

Trek to Jhaku Hill:  At a height of 2,455 meters, the top of Jhaku hill offers a mesmerizing view of Shimla and the entire Shivalik range around. It is a fun trek of about 30 minutes to the top through lush forest terrain.

Shop at Mall Road:  While you are in Shimla, do not forget to do some shopping at the famous Mall road and buy yourself some souvenirs.

Ride the Toy Train: Take a ride in the famous Toy train of Shimla. It is a journey of 96 kilometers that will take you over 864 bridges and 102 tunnels, including the longest one at Barog. Scenic vistas will accompany you throughout the journey and you will have a hard time to stop clicking your camera.

Weather of Shimla

The weather in Shimla is mostly cool throughout the year. The summers can be moderately warm but winters will be extremely cold. During the summer, the temperature will fluctuate between 10°C to 28°C. The average temperature during winter is 10°C to 0°C, but the record low temperature is −12°C.

Between late December to early February, Shimla receives plenty of snow each year and turns into a winter wonderland. Sometimes even the roads from Shimla to Mashobra or Narkanda can get blocked due to all the snow on the road. The night temperature in these months will drop close to 0°C.

The snow is mostly all gone by March, except for at the top of the distant peaks. April marks the beginning of the spring season and until the end of summer in June, Shimla receives the majority of tourists each year. People reach here to escape the scorching heat of the plains. But at this time, even Shimla can feel pretty hot and you may need to switch on the AC in your hotel room. The day temperature can go even beyond 30°C.

The months of July and August are of monsoon. Even though the scenic beauty at this time is at its best, it is not a safe time to visit anywhere in the hills. Shimla receives a lot of rain each year. Sometimes it can rain non-stop for days, causing landslides and making a trip very risky.

Also read: Top 10 Less Visited Places of Himachal

Monsoon departs in the month of September but leaves behind plenty of greenery. Autumn arrives in October and all that was green in September now turns Orange. November is mostly a dry month when the winter settles in once again and the average temperature drops close to 10°C.

Best time to Visit Shimla

Answer to this question will depend on whether you are planning a winter trip or in the months of summer; and what exactly do you seek. On an overall basis, the months from March to June are considered the best time to visit Shimla. This is the time when the weather is neither too cold nor hot. The temperature will range between 10°C to 28°C and both days and nights will be pleasant.

If you were however planning a winter trip and wanted to see plenty of snow, then the months of January and February will be the best time to visit here. The temperature however at this time can dip as low as −4 °C. So you must carry plenty of woolens, jackets and warm clothes. Chances of snowfall are more in January than February.

If you, however, would like to witness the lush green valleys, the months of July, August and September would be the best time. This is the time when the monsoon is either in the valley or has just passed and breathes in life to the fauna and flora of the region.

Please be advised that the rainy season also brings in the risk of incessant rains and landslides as a result. You may even get restricted to your hotel room completely if it rained non-stop.

When to go to Shimla

Below is a breakdown of the best time to go to Shimla for different kinds of trips.

  • Best time to visit Shimla for Apples: The apple harvesting season begins in mid-July and ends in August.
  • Best time to visit Shimla by Toy Train: The toy train remains functional for all 12 months so it is only a question of when is it convenient for you. Please take a look at How to Plan a Trip in Shimla Kalka Toy train for more details.
  • Best time to visit Shimla for Snow: A trip in January or February will be best if you want to see snow.
  • Best time to visit Shimla for Honeymoon: If you were planning your honeymoon, January to March will be the best time. September and October will be the next best months.
  • Best time to visit Shimla for Snowfall: Your chances of catching a snowfall are best between late December to early February. It can snow in late February or early  March as well but chances are less.
  • Best time to visit Shimla with Family: The months from March to June are best for a family trip.
  • Best Month to visit Shimla: September, in my opinion, is the best month to visit Shimla. For a winter trip, January will be the best.
  • Best season to visit Shimla India: Spring and post-monsoon are the best seasons to visit Shimla.

Where to Stay in Shimla

Shimla is one of the most visited hill stations in our country which means that no matter which month you arrive here in, finding a place to stay will not be a problem at all. Hotels here are available in every range, from luxury 5-star resorts to budgeted guest houses. You can easily find a room here for as low as Rs. 700 per night. As a matter of fact, the moment you enter Shimla, you will have agents chasing you for a good hotel deal.

Whether or not to book in advance depends upon your discretion but is not required. If you have already decided on a hotel and know where you want to stay, you may book. Itinerary for Shimla

How your trip finally plans out will completely depend on how you were traveling and the number of days in hand. But I will suggest a few different plans that you can follow, covering Shimla and its nearby areas.

I will suggest the itinerary assuming that you were starting from Delhi. Even if you were coming from a different city though, only the part about traveling to and from Delhi will change. The rest of the details will still apply.

3 Days Itinerary Shimla Trip Itinerary

  • Day 1 – Delhi to Shimla
  • Day 2 – Spend the day sightseeing in Shimla. Visit Jakhu Temple, Christ Church, The Ridge, and Mall Road. Take a drive towards Kufri
  • Day 3 – Return to Delhi

4 Days Itinerary

  • Day 2 – Spend the day sightseeing in Shimla. Visit Jakhu Temple, Christ Church, The Ridge, and Mall Road.
  • Day 3 – Take a drive towards Narkanda. On the way, visit places like Mashobra and Kufri. See Hatu Temple in Narkanda.
  • Day 4 – Return to Delhi

5 Days Plan

  • Day 2 – Take a walk on the Ride road. Later, visit Jakhu Temple and Christ Church. Spend the evening at Mall Road.
  • Day 4 – This day can be planned in 3 ways. Either you can spend it in Shimla just relaxing and enjoying the views. Or you can take a drive to the nearby Chail which is another great tourist attraction. The third way is to enjoy a ride in the Toy Train.
  • Day 5 – Return to Delhi

By Public Transport

The above plans were for someone traveling by their own vehicle. If you were coming by a Bus, below is how you can plan your journey.

  • Day 0 – Board an overnight bus for Shimla. In Delhi, you can get it from ISBT Kashmere Gate.
  • Day 2 & 3 – Spend the next 2 days in the town itself. Visit all of the local attractions in Shimla, eat out, and do some shopping.
  • Day 4 – Board the toy train and reach Kalka. From Kalka, reach Chandigarh Bus stand and find a Bus for your hometown. If you have no interest in the toy train, then find a Bus for back to your hometown from Shimla itself.

Another way you can plan this journey is by doing it the other way around.

  • Day 0 – Board a Bus late in the evening that can drop you at either Shimla or Kalka by the morning the next day.
  • Day 1 – Board the morning toy train for Shimla from Kalka. Reach Shimla and check into a hotel.
  • Day 2 & 3 – Spend the next 2 days sightseeing in Shimla.
  • Day 4 – Return to Delhi by Bus.

Mobile Network in Shimla and Data Connectivity

BSNL has the widest network coverage in Himachal but in Shimla, every cellphone will work fine. Irrespective of which network you were on, you will get reception and 4G data.

If I was to name one, I will say that Airtel and Jio are best mobile network in Shimla on an overall basis.  BSNL has a good network everywhere but data connectivity can be a little poor at times.

Hospital / Medical Assistance

Shimla is the capital of Himachal Pradesh and as such, it has good and large hospitals, capable of handling all kinds of medical emergencies. If you need medical assistance, finding it in Shimla will not be difficult at all.

But with that being said, I will strongly recommend carrying a few basic medicines like for flu, upset stomach, fever, body ache, and pain relief spray.

Petrol Pump / Mechanics

There are petrol pumps and mechanics available in Shimla. In fact, car and motorcycle companies have authorized service stations here so it will not be a problem at all.

Banks / ATMs

All major banks have their branches and ATMs in Shimla. I have been in Shimla on numerous occasions and have never had any trouble getting cash at any of the ATMs.

What & Where to Eat

Being a popular tourist destination, Shimla has an endless list of restaurants serving all kinds of dishes. Out here, you can try local Himachali food, North & South Indian, Chinese, Italian, and pretty much everything.

Where you eat will surely depend on where you were. Your breakfast will be at your hotel and lunch at a restaurant depending on your sightseeing plan. But for dinner, I will suggest that you go to Mall Road and try any of the restaurants there per your liking.

Shopping in Shimla

There are four places where you can try shopping. The first one is the Mall road, the heart of all the action and activity. The second and cheaper option is the Tibetan Market where you can negotiate for good deals on clothes.

An even cheaper place is the Lower Bazaar but is more for buying day to day commodities rather than shopping.

If you want to buy some decorative items, you should try Lakkar Bazaar.

Other than these 4 places, the Himachal Emporium is also a good place to buy some local handicraft items.

My favorite of all these is the Lakkar Bazaar. It is a great place to pick up some souvenirs for the trip. You can try Mall road as well but I found it better for eating than shopping.

lakkar bazaar

Shimla Road Condition

The entire stretch between Delhi to Shimla is a smooth run. Both NH1 between Delhi and Chandigarh and then NH22 between Chandigarh and Shimla remain in excellent condition throughout the year. The only problem on this stretch earlier was the narrow roads and traffic of Kala but with Himalayan Expressway being now operational, the complete journey has turned into bliss.

At the time of writing this article, there is road widening work ongoing between Kalka and Shimla so expect some slow traffic at places. But upon completing, this entire road will turn into a 4 lane highway.

The roads from Shimla to other places like Kufri, Fagu and Narkanda are also very smooth.

Best Vehicle

There is really no best vehicle as such. You will find the locals here driving around Maruti hatchbacks and even scooters. The only thing needed is that your vehicle is well maintained and capable of handling the ups and downs of the mountain roads. In fact, you will find most of the taxi drivers using a Maruti Alto for showing the tourists around.

Below are some most commonly asked questions about Shimla.

When will Shimla Open?

Shimla remains open for tourism throughout the year and flaunts different colors in every season. While the months of June till September will present you with lush green and well-blossomed valleys; January and February will cover Shimla under a thick sheet of white.

Yes, Shimla is definitely worth visiting and there is plenty to see here. It is not only nature lovers but also people with an interest in history and architecture that will be pleased after a trip to this historic hill town.

Shimla Weather and Best Time to Visit Shimla

People prefer to visit Shimla during the Summer season in May-June, to get a relief from the scorching heat but Shimla is also a popular tourist destination in the other seasons as well.

If you want to experience snow and to see the slow life in Shimla, sip hot chai inside a cafe while overlooking mountains laden with snow from a window then you should visit Shimla in the peak winter months of December and January.

Additionally, September, October, March and April are the shoulder months when there aren't too many tourists and the weather is pleasant. For me, personally, this is the best time to visit Shimla.

How to Reach Shimla

Shimla, being a popular sightseeing destination can be reached in numerous ways from nearby cities nad towns. Shimla is connected to all major nearby cities by road, train and flight. Take a look at the various ways of reaching Shimla.

How to Reach Shimla by Bus

Travelling to Shimla by bus is a popular option that most people tend to choose. There are frequent buses to Shimla from all major cities within and outside of Himachal. From Delhi, you'll find a range of buses such as ordinary, semi-sleeper, Volvo etc based on your level of comfort. Similarly, there are regular buses from Chandigarh, Manali etc to Shimla.

How to Reach Shimla by Train

One of the best, most pleasing ways to reach Shimla would be to take the toy train from Kalpa to Shimla. The scenic journey will take you through rolling hills, tunnels and stunning landscapes. If I could change one thing about my Shimla trip, I would've travelled by train instead of the bus.

How to Reach Shimla by Flight

The nearest airport to Shimla is at Jubbarhatti, located 22 km away from Shimla city. You'll find inexpensive direct flights from Delhi to Shimla quite easily.

Places to Visit in Shimla in One Day - A Shimla Itinerary

Shimla is one of the most popular hill stations in India. Its close proximity to Delhi makes it a favorable summer destination for city dwellers. There aren't a whole lot of things to do in Shimla. Since it has a lot of natural beauty, Shimla is a place to relax, unwind and disconnect from the city life. There are just a handful of Shimla sightseeing places. Take a look at them and the various other things to do in Shimla in this Shimla itinerary for one day.

1. City Point

Town hall in Shimla itinerary for one day and Shimla travel guide

City point is exactly what it sounds like - a point in the city. I had presumed it might be called so because it would be a point where you get a view of the city. But it turns out it's a location from where one end of the mall road stretch begins. You can start your Shimla itinerary tour from here.

2. Town Hall

Town hall in Shimla itinerary for one day and Shimla travel guide

If you're an architecture buff like me, you'll fall in love with the Town Hall in Shimla. This beautiful building has been constructed in the Tudor style of architecture which originated in the 1500's under King Henry VIII in England. One could spend hours admiring the make of this building. Luckily for me, I found a cafe with windows overlooking the Town Hall. But more on that later.

3. The Ridge

The ridge in Shimla itinerary for one day and Shimla travel guide

The Ridge is the upper section of the mall road from where you get to see incredible views of the Shimla city, Christ Church and the city square area. The mall road opens up to a wide area where you'll find lots of people walking around, college kids hanging out, parents buying treats for their kids from the street vendors and lots of activity. This area looks particularly delightful on a snowy or a rainy day.

4. Christ Church

Christ church in Shimla itinerary for one day and Shimla travel guide

The Christ Church in Shimla is located right next to the ridge. This church is the backdrop of the open square area. You'll identify this church in many Bollywood movies that are shot in Shimla. One of the more popular ones being 3 Idiots movie where two scenes were filmed in front of Christ church as well as at the ridge.

Where to Eat - The Best Cafes in Shimla

Cafe wake and bake in Shimla itinerary for one day and Shimla travel guide

As I had mentioned earlier, I came across a cafe that was situated directly across the Town Hall. It was a charming little place with large windows to enjoy the outside view. The name of this place is Wake and Bake cafe . When I visited the cafe, there were two guys there practising their music on the guitar. With a little drizzle outside and the melodious music next to me, I can say it felt like I was sitting in the best cafe in Shimla. What a beautiful afternoon that was! Other than Wake and Bake, Cafe Shimla Times is a popular cafe, especially famous for its view of Shimla city.

Unmissable Things to do in Shimla: Shopping at Mall Road

Shopping at Mall Road - One of the most popular things to do in Shimla in this Shimla itinerary and travel guide

You can't leave Shimla without doing a little (or lots of) shopping at Mall Road. This stretch of road is lined with the latest stores as well as small locally owned businesses. Moreover, you'll find lots of cafes and eating joints as well so you never go hungry! The area near Town Hall has branded stores whereas the stretch near City Point has local stores. Shopping at Mall Road is one of the unmissable things to do in Shimla that can't be excluded from any Shimla travel guide or Shimla itinerary.

What to Wear in Shimla

No matter when you visit Shimla, always be prepared for a little cold. I did my Shimla sightseeing in the month of September when there were still light drizzles and it got especially cold in the mornings and evenings. If you're visiting Shimla in the rainy months, carry a raincoat or umbrella. Whereas if you're taking a trip to Shimla in the winter months from November to March, carry sweaters and expect snow in the peak winter months. Carry thermals accordingly. In the summer, you'll need a light shrug for the evenings but the afternoons will be pleasant.

Shimla – Inside Bollywood’s Favourite Background

Shimla – Inside Bollywood’s Favourite Background

Shimla Toy Train

The Ridge, Shimla

Shimla has a lot of stories to tell , some legends, and more heritage, but all equally exciting. Begins at the appropriately named ‘Scandal Point’ where legend has it that the Maharajah of Patiala was exiled from Shimla after a fierce argument with the Viceroy (some stories say he eloped with the Viceroy’s daughter) and was eventually exiled from Shimla –giving this spot its name in 1892. Send yourself a postcard from the timber-structured ‘wild west Swiss’-styled 133-year-old Shimla General Post Office as a souvenir.

Pass Christ Church on the ridge that was built back in 1857 with its tower clock and fresco designed by Rudyard Kipling’s father. Take a break at The Town Hall’s steps, but make way for officials as it’s still used by the Municipal Corporation of Shimla. Get transported to the grandeur and aura of times gone by at the century-old Gaiety Theatre before you move on to the ancient Kali Bari Temple. Stop for a breather at the neo-Gothic Gorton Castle set in the midst of gigantic Deodars. Walk past the enormous Vidhan Sabha to the old Victorian mansion that now houses the Himachal State Museum with its numerous cultural treasures. Be prepared for a pleasant colonial hangover at the end of this walk.

2. Kufri and Chail

Kufri to Chail

Kufri to Chail

Lush green hills mark summer in Kufri– a stark contrast to the fantastic snow slopes that make tobogganing ‘the’ thing to do at the end of the year. If you’re visiting in January, try your hand at the ‘National Snow Statue Competition’ here in Kufri. A short walk around would take you past colonial-Esque statues at Chini Bungalow to the Himalayan nature park.

Head on to Koti for a picnic in unexplored gardens surrounded by orchards. Tall pine and deodar forests signal the entry to Chail at about 2250 meters above MSL. Renowned for the worlds’ highest cricket pitch and polo grounds (at 2444 m above MSL), Chail is also home to the majestic summer palace of the Maharaja of Patiala built in 1891 (when exiled from Shimla by the British). Walk back in time through fascinating Indo-English architecture set on sprawling lawns with wide patios and corridors that echo with voices of an era gone by.

3. Kipling’s home and Viceregal Lodge

Viceregal Lodge

Viceregal Lodge

What makes Shimla more alluring is its glorious past, the days when it was the summer capital during the British Raj. Beneath the Kali Bari temple, at the North Bank, lays an ordinary house where there once lived an extraordinary writer, Rudyard Kipling. This Nobel laureate spent most of his summer vacations here where memories of Jungle Book still linger on . Move on to the Viceregal Lodge. This was originally built as a home and summer residence of subsequent viceroys and governors-general of India. Leave history behind, for a peaceful walk through dense forests for a quiet moment of solitude with a quaint picnic basket for the company.

4. Jakhu Temple Hike

Jakhu Temple Shiimla

Jakhu Temple

Heritage and reverence have co-existed in the hill-town of Shimla for a long time now. Hike up from the east end of the ridge of Shimla, towards the revered Jakhu temple. Through the gates of the Rothney Castle; once the home of the great naturalist, A.O. Hume, hikes uphill to a beautiful temple complemented by the hymns filling the air and the wall murals depicting Hindu myths! A looming 33m tall Hanuman statue and a battalion of His minions stay with you as you stroll through the surrounding forests.

5. Toy Train Ride

Toy Train Shimla

103 tunnels, 864 bridges, 919 curves, and a ride of a lifetime: Welcome aboard the Shimla-Kalka ‘toy train’ . This UNESCO heritage train chugs slowly up the mountains, seemingly playing an interesting game of hiding and seek with tunnels. Gradual ascents on winding tracks, flanked by age-old trees on either side, seem straight out of a storybook. Over a century old, the ‘toy train’ still chugs into the hearts of the hundreds who travel in it every day. Made more memorable with numerous Bollywood songs, there’s nothing like a ride up to Shimla with the tune of ‘gaadi bula rahi hai, seeti baja rahi hai’ probably playing on in your head.

Best time to Visit Shimla

March to June is the popular tourist season when the weather is perfect for outdoor activities and quite pleasant. If you’re the type to lace up your adventure boots, this is the time to visit here with paragliding, trekking, camping, and rafting all up for grabs. July to September sees heavy rainfall and quite a drop-in visitors. On the upside, the rains make the hills more luxuriant and if you’re the kind who prefers dripping weather and lonesome hikes, this time has your name all over it. October to February is the typical Shimla filming weather with huge dollops of snow thrown in! Also, a popular time for visitors. Although a year-round destination, the activities open to you may vary based on when you visit. So, plan accordingly.

Things to carry

Pack as light as possible given the amount of road travel involved here. • Cotton clothing for summer and a light jacket would work for when evenings get cooler. If you’re un[travel]ling in winter, warmer clothes complete with thick socks and warmer jackets. Carry your windcheater and umbrella if you’re here in the monsoons as well. • Sturdy walking shoes, mandatory if you’re hiking, make sense given the amount of walking involved here. • Sunscreen, especially if you’re going up to the higher reaches. Usual prescription medications. • Mobile and tablet electronic chargers.

Best places to stay in Shimla

8 Amazing Places to Visit in Shimla (2024) – the Queen of Hill Stations!

There are plenty of places to visit in Shimla, a popular Indian holiday destination, especially for Delhiites . Shimla provides the perfect break from the city heat.

Nicknamed the Queen of Hill Station’s and previously the ‘Summer Capital’, it is perfectly placed up in the hills of the Himachal region.

The first thing I noticed about Shimla was the cool breeze and the rare occasion in the Indian summer season where I felt, dare I say it, COLD.

I loved the goosebumps on my arms and the cool breeze in my hair, I had surely found nirvana! The ‘Summer Capital’ was a nickname given to Shimla all those years ago and with good reason.

When I left Delhi, it was a scorching 43 degrees Celsius. Sweat rolling down my back and two showers a day are just part of everyday life and I jump from A/C to A/C trying to avoid the sun.

But now, it was almost like summer in the UK…with more monkeys, curry and chai of course! Here are some of the top places to visit in Shimla.

When is the best time to visit Shimla?

By far the best time to visit Shimla would be in the Indian summer season of April – June.

This is when the heat is unbearable in the North of India. So, Shimla is the perfect escape in the mountains.

Although the hotel prices go up three-fold in the summer months and the quality of those hotels is not the best value – the real money you’re paying for is the beautiful views of the mountains.

When I arrived, it started to rain. I don’t know about you, but there is something so mystical about the rain hitting the mountains and that fresh smell from the ground after. Maybe it’s just me!

Luckily, this let up after 10 minutes and the clouds made way for beautiful sunshine!

This was pretty much a standard weather forecast in Shimla each day, so come prepared for all seasons.

The town itself is completely overcrowded with buildings literally stacked on top of each other and every square inch is being used for tourism to grab the last rupee cent. But is it worth it? Hell yes!

How to reach Shimla from Delhi

There are multiple ways you can reach Shimla.

If you have the extra time or you’re backpacking, you can catch a bus from Delhi, Chandigarh or Rajasthan and wind your way directly up to Shimla and the journey can take anything from 10-12 hours.

If you’re in a rush and just visiting for a short weekend, like me, you can catch the newly released direct flight from Delhi via Air India but this only flies on Wednesdays and Sundays.

So, I decided to take a flight to Chandigarh and grab a taxi up the hill!

How to travel from Chandigarh to Shimla

A cab from Chandigarh to Shimla should cost you no more than 2500 rupees (not the best option if you’re on a budget).

You can book online through One Way Cab or there are many other travel sites with competitive rates you can book through. It will all depend on what sort of car you want.

The best way to reach Shimla is via the toy train from Kalka, but it’s booked up months in advance.

This is something I was dying to do but it’s not a great option unless you’re super prepared (which I wasn’t)!

It’s supposed to be one of the most beautiful train journeys in the world so if you can nab a seat – great!

You may get lucky with a last-minute ticket but you will have to be prepared to sit on the floor or stand.

SHIMLA HILLS

8 AMAZING places to visit in Shimla

1. shimla mall road.

Unbeknown to me Shimla itself is a huge area, with the main part centred around the famous Mall Road.

Be sure to check where your hotel is located before you book as you may find you’ll be far away from the action. Unless that’s what you want, then go for it!

To avoid paying for cabs every day, I decided to place myself here. One of the things I LOVED about the Mall was that no vehicles were allowed on it.

Living in the city, it’s hard to escape the honking of cars and pollution so to have fresh clean air and a quiet (ish) area was a welcome prospect.

To get up to Mall Road from the main through the road below where you’ll arrive by cab, you have to grab the Tourism Lift.

I would love to say that it was a great experience but I would be lying to you. It costs around 10 rupees for a one-way ride and it’s the typical ‘Indian queue’ where, quite frankly, there isn’t one.

The lift was a tight squeeze, especially if you have luggage with you. I tucked myself in the lift along with the other Indian family with me.

Luckily, It was only a minute and I was out. Sweet freedom! But then, to my horror, there was another lift. So, I got in the throng again and made my way up to the Mall.

Everything you need is placed here, shops, street food vendors, restaurants, travel companies. It’s the main road for tourists who are staying here.

When I visited in the summer, it was pretty crowded but as everyone is on holiday having a good time, it has a nice vibe to it.

WELCOME TO SHIMLA

2. The Heritage Walk

There isn’t a great deal to do in Shimla, as in tourist attractions, which allows you to just take in the breathtaking scenery all around you.

One of the ways to do this is to take their Heritage Walk from Scandal Point.

It’s around a 2.5km walk one way which ends up at the Institute of Advanced Studies or Viceregal Lodge as it was named when it was first built.

It doesn’t take very long, but if you’re a slow walker and would like to take breaks to enjoy the views, it will take an hour.

places to visit in Shimla

3. The Viceregal Lodge

The Viceregal Lodge, also now known as Rashtrapati Niwas is a beautiful building which was originally built for the British Viceroy of India.

It was also famously home to many of the discussions which led to the Indian Independence and, after that, summer home to the President of India.

You can take a tour inside for 80 rupees but it’s nothing to write home about and photography is prohibited.

If you’d rather just see and snap it from the outside and enjoy the beautiful gardens with colourful flowers, it’ll cost you next to nothing at 20 rupees.

There’s a cute little fire station cafe to grab a drink or a snack before you walk back.

VICEREGAL LODGE

4. The Ridge

The Mall Road will lead you up and around to the Ridge ground.

It’s a beautiful wide-open space and it’s where you can relax and take in the atmosphere.

Families take photos and selfies with the view and children eat ice cream and take pony rides around the square.

Christ Church itself is very pretty and worth a peek inside. I didn’t spend a lot of time here, but it was a lovely place to walk around.

From here, you can head around for some budget souvenir shopping at Lakkar Bazaar. Or start your trek to the famous Jakhu Temple.

THE RIDGE SHIMLA places to visit in Shimla

5. Climb up or take the cable car to Jakhu Temple

From all over Shimla you can see the famous bright orange Hanuman statue.

It definitely has a presence which towers over everything and is said to be one of the biggest in the world.

The statue guards the famous Jakhu temple and many pilgrims take the worthwhile walk up to the top.

HANUMAN STATUE SHIMLA

There are three ways in which you can reach Jakhu Mandir;

  • Grab a shared Government taxi to the top of the hill which will cost you around 20 rupees
  • Make your way up the hill by trekking it which is completely free but will leave you breathless
  • Or, get the newly opened Jakhu Ropeway.

I decided to have a ride on the Jakhu Ropeway as it would save me walking.

It’s not a cheap option at 550 rupees return but if you’d rather save the energy it’s worth its weight in gold!

The ride was short but provided some spectacular aerial views of Shimla and a view of the tops of the trees with Hanuman poking his head over.

JAKHU ROPEWAY CABLECAR

6. See the Hanuman Statue in Shimla

When I got to the top of the mountain, I made my way over and I just couldn’t take my eyes off it. It was a mammoth of a statue. So, although it was busy, I just took a moment to take it all in.

goodtoknowicon min

A warning: even if you merely whisper the fact you’re planning to visit the temple, any local will warn you about the monkeys (or Bandar in Hindi) which live there.

As Hanuman is the Hindu monkey god, it is natural that these pesky friends will be waiting around for temple offerings.

I had read up on this before I went and had these awful visions of hundreds of monkeys coming to attack me, in which I would need to use my ‘monkey bashing stick’ to ward them off but I got lucky.

When I reached the temple, there was a festival going on and there was a huge crowd of people at the foot of the statue, so the monkeys were kept at bay.

That’s not to say that they weren’t causing havoc though, so be warned! Don’t carry food in your bag and keep your sunglasses and loose items hidden.

HANUMAN TEMPLE

The festival was in full swing and the temple was providing free food for everyone that was there. Noodles and Ice cream to be exact.

At first, I didn’t take any of the ice creams as I felt bad taking them.

But, a kind old lady saw me drooling over it and literally dragged me by my arm into the queue.

Lesson learned, when life hands you free ice cream, grab it with both hands!

The temple itself, due to the festival, was crowded so I gave it a miss to check out the inside. But the views from the top are stunning.

JAKHU TEMPLE

I have a habit of finding these tacky but awesome Indian costume photo opportunities and as there was one there – it would be rude not to follow tradition!

Usually, these include dressing up in a traditional Indian dress of the state you’re in.

It will cost you next to nothing and is a great souvenir to take home. Here’s me in traditional Himachal dress. Can I just be Indian now?

HIMACHAL TRADITIONAL DRESS

7. Stay at the Willow Banks Hotel in Shimla

After all these places to visit in Shimla, you’ll need a place to stay!

As mentioned earlier, the hotels are really not the best value for your money in the summer months but there are some Luxury, mid-range and budget ranges to choose from.

Make sure you check out a competitive booking website or call the hotel directly.

Due to the peak season, negotiating a rate will be a pretty hard task. I stayed at the Hotel Willow Banks while I was in Shimla which had an amazing view of the town and beyond.

What I love about India is they always do rooms for single occupancy, so if you are a solo traveller you’ll find some rates to suit your budget.

Don’t fret, it will have a double bed and pretty much be like a normal room if there were two of you, but they just charge less – magic.

believeinmagic

HOTEL WILLOW BANKS SHIMLA

8. Sip a virgin Mojito at Wake and Bake Shimla

There are plenty of restaurant and cafe choices. By far, my favourite cafe was the Wake and Bake.

It’s situated on The Mall Road opposite the Gaiety theatre, just look out for the bright yellow shutters.

It’s a perfect choice, no matter what your budget as they sell pizza by the slice (Margherita is as little as 110 rupees).

It was just a really nice chilled-out place to relax after a long day whatever you’re up to.

You can sip an Americano or Virgin Mojito and watch the world go.

WAKE AND BAKE SHIMLA

Clean and Green Shimla

I almost laughed when I saw the sign which said ‘Welcome to India’s most progressive state’ but when I got here, they honestly have a good thing going on!

Spitting, Smoking and Littering (all the things I hate) have a hefty fine attached to them.

The positive messages around keeping the town safe, clean and green really go to its credit.

I absolutely loved this attitude and the way the town wants to protect its medal of responsible tourism.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

What I would have done differently in Shimla

Personally, I found it too overpriced and overcrowded in May.

That’s not to say I wasn’t grateful for a few days in the cool air, not at all, but I think if I were to visit again – it would be in the winter months.

That way, you can enjoy the scenery without the crowds and if you’re really lucky, see some snowfall which just looks magical!

Saying this, I will definitely miss the cool breezes here in Shimla once I hit the searing heat of the city (sigh).

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

There are plenty more places to visit in Shimla

So these are just a few of the places to visit in Shimla. Being a Delhiite myself and suffering the heat, I can see why people quite literally want to run for the hills!

It truly is one of India’s finest jewels in her crown and if you haven’t yet, you should be adding this as a priority stop on your itinerary.

hi Raacho, thanks for the recommendations! I actually would have loved to visit places near Shimla as it’s so overrun there! Thank you Sophie x

I believe you have missed a lot by not travelling by the heritage rail route from Kalka to Shimla. That is the best part of any tour of Shimla. This route is an engineering marvel and the sights en route are a treat to watch. This is a narrow gauge line that passes through 99 tunnels and many remarkable bridges. Travel again. You can reach Kalka from Delhi by Kalka Mail and take the connecting Shivalik Express that leaves Kalka early in the morning and reaches Shimla by noon.

Hi Dost, I know! I desperately wanted to get the train route but it was sold out :( Next time! Sophie x

One week trip to Shimla and Manali

We did a one week trip to Shimla and Manali in November 2015. Although a week is not enough to explore both Shimla and Manali, half of us had been there previously. So, rather than hopping from one site seeing destination to another, we were looking for a relaxing getaway from the daily hustle and bustle of life. Also, we planned this one week trip to Shimla and Manali as a big family group. So, it was as much of a family gathering as a trip. And we also listed down our preferred places to visit in Shimla and Manali before starting on our one week trip to Shimla and Manali. Finally, due to the slow indulgence we spent a very nice and memorable time with our family.

Table of Contents

Initial planning

Best time to visit shimla and manali.

Although, Shimla and Manali can be visited all through the year. The best time to visit Shimla and Manali depends on what you want from these destinations. If you want to visit here as an escape from the summer that rest of India faces, then, visit in the months of March – May. And if you want to really enjoy the chilling cold and snowfall (well, I do!), then visit in the winter months of late October – February. You can avoid visiting here in the monsoon months of June – September because of the possibilities of landslides.

Commute for a one week Shimla and Manali trip

We planned our one week trip to Shimla and Manali almost 3-3.5 months in advance. Once we decided that we wanted to head on a one week trip to Shimla and Manali, the first thing we did was to book our flight tickets. So, next we booked flight tickets from Bangalore to Chandigarh. From Chandigarh, we booked 2 cabs for the whole week. These cabs were supposed to take us on a round trip journey of Chandigarh -> Shimla and Manali -> Chandigarh. You can also take AC volvo buses from Delhi to Shimla and also buses from Manali back to Delhi if you prefer. And for local sightseeing you can take local taxis.

Where to stay in Shimla and Manali

Then, the next thing was to find a nice accommodation at both the places However, this took some time and considerable research. Although this was the start of winter holiday season, the places were getting booked fast.We compared the quote and the facilities and decided on the one we actually wanted to book. Here’s a shortlist of   our recommendation of stay in Shimla  that we came up with while searching for our hotel here.We highly recommend that if you are planning a trip to Shimla and Manali, do book your stay in advance by checking out the variety of options available at booking.com or agoda.com . As, these websites give us options of discounts and free cancellation till last moment etc.

Actually, we got a nice resort in Manali , before we finalized where to stay in Shimla. Because there was a little less rush in Manali compared to Shimla. (Manali is located at higher altitude due to which, many tourists go to Shimla and return from there rather than extending their journey till Manali. As a result, at least in off peak season and starting of the tourist season, there is far less rush in Manali compared to Shimla). Actually. we had almost given up the hopes of finding a place in Shimla that would be able to accommodate all our requirements and suit our budget as well, when we finally stumbled upon this homestay and booked it. Finally, we were done with all our bookings for our one week Shimla and Manali trip almost 2 months in advance of the travel.

ManaliHotel2

Finally the journey starts

Day1 : bangalore – chandigarh – shimla.

Finally, the day of the tour arrived (Oh my! How we counted days since the tour was finalized and the bookings done 🙂 ) We booked early morning flight to Chandigarh. As a result, we reached Chandigarh early in the morning. The rest of our family joined us from Delhi at the Chandigarh domestic terminal. (Delhi to Chandigarh has very good road as well as rail connectivity. Our family chose to travel by the morning Shatabdi express train that took them just 3 hours to arrive at Chandigarh).  From here, we started straight for our journey to Shimla. The cabs were ready as soon as we exited the Chandigarh airport. We hopped into the cabs and were already on our way to Shimla. The road from Chandigarh to Shimla is very scenic. We took a halt in between for lunch.

Finally, we arrived at our homestay in Shimla by 7 in the evening. The host generously showed us around the whole place (we had booked the complete homestay). After an exploratory walk around the whole place, we chose our rooms and settled down. After getting fresh we had a nice home cooked dinner which the host himself served. Over the dinner, we talked to him and saught his opinion to decide upon our next day’s itinerary. He was generous enough to fill us in with lots of information on what to see and where to go. Post dinner, we had little chit chat and finally we retired for the day.

Tips:  We were constrained by time, so we choose the shortest path to Shimla. If you can, we would highly recommend to take the kalka – shimla toy train to reach shimla. Checkout this post to get all the information on how to book, when to book and anything else you need to know about the toy train journey.

Day2 : Naldehra, Ridge and Mall

Naldehra trek.

The next day, we started our day with home cooked breakfast. Then we spent some time relaxing on the huge terrace of the homestay where sunlight was abundant and the soft and warm feeling in the winter month was adorable. Next we started on exploring the town. We had been to most of the main attractions of Shimla before. So, we went straight to Naldehra trekking path on the recommendation of our cab drivers. While we walked through the whole trekking path, our parents boarded the ponies available at the start of the trek. We walked slowly, syncing in the natural beauty that surrounded us, taking breaks and relaxing through the trek.

Naldehra Trek 7

Finally we arrived at the narrow stream of water and then the golf course ahead. From here, we returned back through the same path and by the time we reached back at the starting point, it was lunch time. We had lunch at a nice small restaurant nearby. The view of surrounding hills from here was awesome. By the time we left the spot, it was already well into the afternoon. I guess it was around 3pm. So, we decided to head next to the ridge and the mall road area.

Ridge and Mall

From the Naldehra trek, we headed to the ridge post lunch. Upon reaching the ridge, we relaxed for some time, sitting on the rustic benches and talking merrily. Post that, we had some pretty photo sessions done right on the ridge. We had evening snacks here, some had hot momos and some had ice creams. (It’s always a delight to enjoy an icecream in the chilling cold weather..isn’t it? The ice cream doesn’t create a mess by melting away in your hands when the weather around is cold 😀 )

ShimaChristChurch-min

From here, we started strolling down the mall road, stopping at the shops in between to pick some little souvenirs here and there. We walked our way till the government installed lift. (The lift is located at one end of the mall road. You can easily get to the lift by walking straight across the mall road. You can also take direction from locals and the shopkeepers. There is a board near the lift that would point you in the right direction) By the time we made it to the lift, it had turned dark and from the way towards the lift we could see the whole town dazzling in red and yellow lights. After taking the lift, we arrived down at the lower bazar. Our cabs were waiting here for us. From here, we headed back to our home stay.

Shimla-Manali

Tips: There are several attractions in Shimla, many of them are near the ridge and mall road. We would strongly recommend you visit some of them as per your liking. You can also take a heritage walk along the ridge-mall road area, that would cover many buildings and sites of historical importance. Checkout: 11 must see places in Shimla

Day3: Tara Devi temple and Sankat Mochan Temple

Today, post breakfast, on the owner’s recommendation, we started off to Sankat Mochan Temple . We spent some good time here, offering our prayers to different dieties. We also rested in the huge courtyard of the temple, marveling the magnificent views beyond.

Sankat Mochan 3

From here we headed to Tara Devi temple. Tara Devi temple is at more elevation compared to the rest of Shimla. By the time we reached here, weather had changed and it was turning cloudy. We offered our prayers here, spent some time relaxing and then decided to call it a day and head back to our home stay. It seemed that the clouds were going to get denser and at some point it was going to rain.

Tara Devi Shimla

We had lunch en-route and by the time we reached back, it was around 4pm. I went straight to the roof of the homestay. It was a delight to see the black dark clouds hovering over the mountains. (Many call this kind of weather gloomy but I have a special love for the hovering clouds, particularly when amidst nature) The next day, we had to start quiet early for Manali. Because of this reason also, we thought to let our parents and kid relax for the day. Sitting on the terrace, we enjoyed witnessing the formation of black clouds over the mountains until it started raining. Then we headed back to our rooms to enjoy some fresh hot coffee. Tips: If you are headed to Shimla for the first time, we would highly recommend to stay for a few more days. There are several other places of interest to cover in and around Shimla, and many activities to do, all of which we didn’t cover in this trip. You might be interested in including some of them in your list. Check out these post links for further details: 11 must see places in Shimla 10 offbeat indulgence in Shimla

Day4: Shimla to Manali road trip

The next day we started quiet early in the morning to Manali, since the Shimla to Manali road trip takes around 7-8 hrs. You would be forced to go slow, not only because of the steep climbs and hairpin turns but because the whole drive is so scenic, you would want to indulge into the natural beauty by stopping several times in between and driving slow through the extra scenic patches. Read the details of our drive from Shimla to Manali here . No doubt, it is one of the most scenic road trips that we have taken in India. At Kullu, we stopped near the government emporium to browse their collection of shawls and woolen garments. The collection was nice. Thus, some of us bought a few things. From here, we started straight to our hotel. Finally, we arrived at our hotel by evening 5pm. Then we checked-in, got fresh, had dinner and slept.

balancing travel with a day job

Day5: Hidimba Temple, Manu temple, Mall Road, Monastery & Club house

Hidimba temple.

Our resort was located quiet close to Hidimba Devi temple. Morning post breakfast, we headed straight to the temple. Adjoining this temple is the Manu temple. We offered our prayers at both these temples. The temple premise is quiet huge. We around the temple premises for quiet some time. There are green fields extending all around the temple, with tall deodar trees. Fresh air greets you in whichever direction you decide to head. Beautiful small shops offering Puja material line up the entrance of the temple. The temple is very ancient and beautiful. We spent some time here. Then we headed to our next destination – the Mall road of Manali.

Mall Road & Monastery

Next we went to Mall road, Manali. This is the main commercial hub of the town of Manali. After strolling from one end to another, looking on the offerings, we settled for lunch at one of the restaurant. Post lunch, we headed to the monastery adjacent to the mall road. This is a beautiful , colorful small monastery right next to the Mall road of Manali. You can ask locals for direction to the Monastery. As you reach near it, you will see threads of wire. Several colorful papers are hanging on these threads, marking the presence of a Monastery. After visiting this Monastery we crossed the mall road once again to head towards the Manali club house. On our way, we peeked into some of the shops. The woolen garments and dress materials in this market seem to be really worth a buy. The cost of material is very reasonable while the quality seems good.

Manali Monastery-min

Next, we headed to the Manali club house which is located at the banks of the river Beas. The club house houses a shopping complex and offers seating adjacent to the river bank. Most of our time was spent here exploring the grounds, and some doing a little shopping in the complex. However, to be honest, I was quiet disapponted on the commercialization of this club house. I had been here almost 15 years back with my parents. The place was so much more charming then. You could go right upto the bank of the majestic river flowing near it and sit on the stones. However, now the river is reduced to a meager stream and there is no way one can go upto its bank. There are vendors all around and overall the place looks like a huge shopping complex cum ratery than anything else.

Finally, from here, we returned back to our resort as it had started to drizzle a little. We decided to gather in one of our parents room and order coffee as it was getting cold.

Turn of weather and back to Hotel

The resort had an excellent view of snow clad mountain peaks through the full glass window of each room. While we were chatting, we observed that slowly it was actually snowing on the upper slopes of the hills. Steadily the whole area was getting covered in a fresh blanket of snow. It was such a delight to watch. Tonight it had turned quiet chilled in Manali, there were cold waves blowing and rainfall steadily happening all through the night.

Day6: Solang Valley and Rohtang Pass

The weather again took it’s turn this morning and we were greeted with fresh sunshine and clear weather. We headed to Solang Valley today. The way to the valley is stunningly beautiful, with snow clad mountains visible all around. As they had received a good dose of snow last night, they looked even more beautiful. The valley looks mesmerizing surrounded by green mountains wearing white caps. We walked around, and rested here, taking snaps, admiring the beauty of nature and just sitting, doing nothing. I couldn’t help picturing this vast expanse in winter months of December and January. The valley seems to get a good dose of snow at that time. Thus it becomes a hub for snow sports, attracting tourists from far and wide.

Manali Snow

From here, we wanted to head to Rohtang Pass. Alas, because of the snow the day before, it was not possible to go to Rohtang Pass. We went uphill till the point the roads were clear of snow. Finally we reached Gulaba, the highest point accessible, and it was totally worth it. Fresh snow from the night before covered the area, forming a soft fleece all over the grass. We played in the snow, walked around enjoying every bit of it and snapped some beautiful pictures. (however our 1.5 years old was concerned, looking at the snow and thinking there was tons of milk spilled around!! :D) . We returned from here back to our hotel by afternoon and then relaxed for the day as next day we had full day journey back to Chandigarh.

If you have more days at hand, we highly recommend a road trip to Ladakh from Manali. It can also be done from Srinagar, and on your way back, you can land in Manali.

Manali Snow

Tips: one of my fondest memories of Manali is picking fresh apples from orchards, when I had been here with my parents long long back. We also visited an apple sorting unit and picked delightfully fresh apples from here. If you happen to visit around September mid, that would be the time of apple plucking and sorting in Manali. Do visit an apple orchard. The locals will be very happy to show you around. They will tell you about the huge volume of apple harvest, different varieties and other relevant details. If they are happy enough, they might as well gift you a basket of apples – for free!! To enjoy while you walk across the roads of Manali.

Day7: Manali to Chandigarh

Finally arrived the last day of our awesome trip. Today we started quiet early in the morning for our trip back to Chandigarh. We had breakfast on our way after crossing Kullu in one of the road side dhabas (small restaurants). And we are going to remember this breakfast for long. Since here we had the most amazing aalloo paraths, tea, coffee and toast. Then we drove and drove, descending one mountain and ascending another, capturing memories of incredible natural beauty around. Until we reached Chandigarh at 4 in the evening. From Chandigarh, we had our train back to Delhi around 6 in the evening. We reached Delhi by 10 at night.

In Conclusion to our one week trip to Shimla and Manali

In conclusion, our Shimla-Manali trip was one of the most memorable trips and quiet close to our hearts. Since, our complete family was with us on this trip. Best Time to Visit Shimla

The hills of Shimla pack in rare natural majesty, thanks to the towering hills that remain covered with dense forests of oak, deodar, and pine which are home to a wide variety of exotic flora and fauna. The typical Shimla weather conditions, which usually remain cool and pleasant for most of the time, just add more to the beauty and charm of Shimla tourism. But if you want to make the best out of your trip then you should know about the best time to visit Shimla. And although Shimla is a year-round destination, there still are seasons when the town is either full of tourists or bears a deserted look. Let’s delve into the details.

Peak season 1:

During summers, which extend from early May to mid-July, daytime Shimla temperatures hover between 22 - 27 °C. This means that the weather remains pleasant for outdoor activities during the day. And that’s why this period is considered as the best season to visit Shimla. With the most number of tourists arriving during summer months, it is considered as the peak season for tourists in Shimla. However, the nights are moderately cooler and it is recommended that  the tourists visiting Shimla during this time of the year pack light woollens.

Off season:

Being a hill station, Shimla receives huge amount of rainfall during monsoons, which start mid-July and extend till late September. Incessant rainfall leads to frequent landslides and that’s why most tourists do not travel to Shimla during this season. No surprise that this is a lean period for Shimla tourism. However, this can be a great time to witness the beauty of Shimla during Monsoon at  pocket-friendly budget rates as some of the best hotels in Shimla are available at very low prices.

Shoulder season:

After the Monsoon is over, Shimla tourism is welcomed by the spectacular shades of autumn that adorn this already beautiful hill town in Himachal. This is the time when it’s neither too crowded nor absolutely deserted. Many tourists prefer to take advantage of this short shoulder season to explore Shimla tourist places which starts by around last week of September and lasts till the end of November. Many restaurants and budget hotels in Shimla offer lucrative deals during this season which can be very inviting for budget travellers wanting to experience Shimla tourism.

Peak season 2:

Not just during the summer, the demand for Shimla tourism shoots up  even during the winter. And why not? After all, that’s the time when one can best experience snowfall in Shimla! Everything is draped in the white of snow and it makes for the perfect place to be for the people who love snowfall. Honeymooners and families flock in large numbers to experience Shimla tourism during winter, despite the harsh cold. For adventurers, resort towns like Kufri and Narkanda are some of the best tourist places near Shimla in winters, for they offer skiing, skating, and other winter sports.

How To Reach Shimla

As it happens, Shimla tourism is one of the most sought after holidaying experiences for tourists in India. Quite necessarily, the hill station is very well connected to nearby towns and cities by all modes of transport – air, rail, and road. So, getting  to this hill station that you have to worry the least about.

If you wish to travel by air, the domestic airport located in Jubbarhatti is the nearest airport to Shimla at approximately 20 km. Frequent flights to Shimla are available from the airports in the nearby cities of Chandigarh and Delhi.

Even though Shimla is located at an altitude of around 2,200 metres, there is a railway station right in the heart of this hill town. Located at 2,075 metres, Shimla railway station is  part of the 96km-long UNESCO World Heritage Kalka-Shimla rail line. It serves the purpose well for those who prefer to travel by train. Also, the toy train between Kalka and Shimla is a great way of beginning your Shimla tour. One can reach Kalka Junction, which is the nearest broad gauge railway station connected to multiple major cities of India via rail, and then board the Kalka-Shimla toy train from there.

Even if you have never experienced Shimla tourism  before, you might have a fair idea of its popularity by now. In order to ensure better connectivity, the hill station is well connected by roads to almost all nearby cities and towns. Shimla is around 260 km from Delhi and 110 km from Chandigarh. State-run and private buses of all classes are easily available from Chandigarh, Delhi, Ambala, Amritsar, and various other cities. One can also avail the  more luxurious option of travelling to Shimla by taxis, many of which are available online as well.

Top Places To See In Shimla

Located in the heart of Shimla, one level below Shimla Ridge, the Mall Road is one of the popular attractions of Shimla tourism. It is as much a popular hangout site for tourists as it is for the locals. Being the main street of the capital city of Himachal Pradesh,  Mall Road brims with number of cafes, restaurants, boutiques, and other famous historical structures that add to the charm of Shimla tourism. If you are in Shimla and planning to take a leisurely walk down the Mall Road, make sure you visit Kali Bari Temple, Town Hall,  Gaiety Theatre, and Scandal Point as they make for some of the best of Shimla tourist places. During winters, the Mall Road is thronged  by honeymooners and families who love to witness the beauty of this site when covered in snow. No Shimla  travel guide is complete without the inclusion of Mall Road.

Shimla Ridge

Sitting one level above the Mall Road, Shimla Ridge is a large open area surrounded by picture-perfect views of the hill station. It is arguably one of the top tourist attractions of Shimla tourism. This is where most of the cultural activities and celebrations take place in Shimla. Usually misty in summers and draped in snow during winters, the ridge is also home to the iconic Christ Church which is more than 150 years old. Adorned by neon lights of cafes, restaurants, and international stores, Shimla Ridge is definitely a must visit for every tourist who wishes to get the best out of their Shimla tour.

Once the home to Alllan Octavian Hume, the British-era civil servant and the founder of the Congress, Rothney Castle is now a heritage monument and a major attraction for people taking a Shimla tour. The castle is surrounded with natural vegetation offering stunning views of the hills and so is also a popular site amongst photography enthusiasts and nature lovers.

Chadwick Falls

If you are the one who is ready to go beyond the popular attractions of Shimla, Chadwick Falls in Glen Forest, around seven kilometres from Summer Hill Chowk, Shimla is one of the most beautiful and lesser known attractions that Shimla tourism has to offer. While the waterfall itself may not be as big as many others in Himachal, the trail that leads up to it is a rare example of serene and intact natural beauty of Shimla tourism. It is best viewed during monsoons when the flow is strongest. Once you reach here, just sit back on the benches and take in the gifts of nature.

Just around 20 km from Shimla, Kufri is yet another resort destination of Shimla tourism that allows travelers to spend some time away from the hustle and bustle of the city. It only takes about 40 minutes to reach Kufri and the drive is absolutely stunning. You can take a day excursion to Kufri and visit its famous attractions which include Himalayan Nature Park, Indira Tourist Park, Kufri Zoo, and more. In winters, Kufri witnesses heavy snowfall, making it the best place for winter sport lovers.

Made famous by its lush green golf course and race course, Annandale is another British-era wonder under Shimla tourism that now serves as a major tourist attraction for tourists. . Located about four kilometres from Shimla, Annandale sits cosy in the valley of Kaithu village. With towering peaks overlooking the small hamlet, Annandale resembles a village straight out of paradise. If you wish to get some offbeat experience from Shimla tourism, Annandale is a must visit

This is a small hill that  offers unparalleled views of the bewitching natural beauty that Shimla tourism is blessed with. Approximately 15 km from Shimla, Shogi is a quaint hamlet that is known for its incredible serenity, peaceful environs, and picturesque natural beauty. If you love camping in the hills and enjoy gazing at the stars, Shogi is the best Shimla tourism can offer.

Are you a honeymooner who thinks Shimla is going to be a bit too crowded for your post-wedding holiday? Well, Shimla tourism has Mashobra,a resort town situated around 12 km from the main city, for a romantic holiday that promises to offer you all the privacy and peace you need.. The ultimate guide for exploring the ‘queen of hills’ shimla.

Shimla Travel Guide

November 22nd, 2017 by Garusha Katoch

Nestled in the mighty Himalayas with undulating terrains and slopes decked with ample verdure, Shimla is liberally blessed with natural beauty. From archaic British monuments to fragrant apple orchards; rich indigenous goods to Tibetan markets, hiking trails to deep forests, Shimla is a popular crowd puller all year round, and the ‘Queen of Hills’ indeed.

Best Time to Visit

Shimla Travel Guide

Owing to its scenic beauty, Shimla can be visited all year round. However, the most ideal time to experience this gem of the Himalayas is from March to June and September to December . The weather during this period is pleasant enabling you to explore the valley extensively. The town usually receives snowfall in December fulfilling your dream of a white Christmas!

Shimla Travel Guide

Average annual temperature: 15°C

June is the warmest month in Shimla with an average temperature of 20°C.  The coldest month is January with average temperature of 5°C. The town receives heavy snowfall during this period.

What to Pack

If you are visiting in summer, pack light clothing and essentials. However, the temperature drops down in the evenings, so light woolens and windcheaters are recommended. If you are visiting in the winters, make sure to pack heavy woolens and warmers to save yourself from the chilly air and frost. Besides clothing, pack comfortable walking shoes, trekking boots, sunscreen, raingears and a camera to capture all the special moments during your holiday.

Places to Visit

The Christ Church on Mall Road against a stunning backdrop of snow-capped peaks is probably a global identifier of Shimla, but there is a lot more to the hill station.

Historic Landmarks

(i) Built in 1904, the Gorton Castle in Shimla is a popular site of attraction among visitors. The building was constructed by the British using the Neo-Gothic style of architecture during the colonial era. The castle balconies are adorned with intricate zari work and are the main highlight of the building.

The castle was engulfed by flames during a fire in 2014; however, the restoration work has been in full swing.

(ii) The Rothney Castle in Shimla is significantly known as the abode of A.O. Hume, the founder of the Indian National Congress. A little way up from the Ridge, this late 19th-century mansion is flanked by scented pine trees and oak. The interiors are lavish and elaborate with spacious reception or ball rooms and a magnificent conservatory. The walls of the grand halls are decked with Humes’s collection of Indian horns. During his lifetime, he and a European gardener manned the lawns and garden of the property and turned the conservatory into a perpetual horticultural exhibition which was frequented by locals. Today, the castle is a faint reminder of the 1800s, covered in lush green florals and trees.

Shimla Travel Guide

(iii) A stunning example of baroque architecture, the Viceregal Lodge in Shimla is the closest you will get to ‘Hogwarts’ in India. Built in 1888, the lodge served as the official summer residence of the British Viceroys. The building, made out of local gray sandstone and light blue limestone is perched atop the Observatory Hill offering a panoramic view of the Shimla Valley. Well maintained lush lawns add further charm to the castle’s beauty. An exhaustive tour of the castle takes almost half your day but is worth moment.

(iv) The Gaiety Theatre is another notable architectural landmark in the Mall Road. Built in the Victorian era, the theatre has been well restored over the years and has been the center of Shimla’s social life. Notable artists like Rudyard Kipling and Shashi Kapoor frequented this theatre in the newly independent India. Today, it hosts several events, exhibitions and plays in town.

The Himachal State Museum depicts the rich cultural and traditional heritage of Himachal Pradesh, Built in the mid- 19 th century, the museum boasts of an impressive collection of Himachali, Rajasthani and Punjabi miniatures, traditional costumes and jewellery, delicate stone and wood carvings, and rare  photographs of Himachal temples.

The Shimla Heritage Museum is another famous site of attraction to study the culture of Shimla and Himachal Pradesh

Shimla Travel Guide

(i) Arguably the most prominent landmark of Shimla, the Christ Church on the eastern end of the Ridge is one of the oldest churches in North India. The Church is a fine example of neo-Gothic architecture of Victorian era. The structure is characterised by stained glass windows, a pipe organ, a huge clock tower and a rich collection of old scriptures.

Shimla Travel Guide

(ii) Perched high up a forested peak, the Jakhu Temple is among Shimla’s most famous temples. Dedicated to the Lord Hanuman, the temple is a steep hike from the Ridge through a narrow pathway flanked by dense deodars on both sides.

Many monkeys playfully roam around the temple complex. To be cautious, ensure your valuables are packed safely in a carry bag/handbag.

Experience the Unblemished Culture of Shimla

Unlike most Indian cities, Shimla has managed to retain its unique old world charm. The hill station has managed to strike a perfect balance between its traditional values and modernization. The population is a mix of many tribes that live in a complete harmony with each other while maintaining their values and heritage. The folk dance and music of Shimla reflect its traditional roots and are slightly influenced by the medieval Europe owing to the colonialism. The festivals, notably the Summer Festival are celebrated with great flair and enthusiasm. Christmas and New Year’s celebration in Shimla are an experience like no other.

Patients Struggle as Doctors' Strike Paralyzes Medical Services in Shimla

Badar Singh, who had come all the way from Sirmaur district to Shimla for treatment, had to return home untreated due to an ongoing doctors' strike at Indira Gandhi Medical College and Hospital.

Suffering from severe knee pain, Singh spent Rs 1,000 on his travel, only to find that doctors were participating in a nationwide strike led by the Indian Medical Association (IMA) to protest against the alleged rape and murder of a medic in Kolkata.

Singh is among hundreds of patients affected as medical facilities across the state struggle to cope with the withdrawal of non-emergency services. The strike has particularly hit the poor and elderly hard, forcing many to make alternative arrangements and bear extra expenses in the state capital.

Raksha Bandhan, observed in India and various parts of the world, stands as one of the prominent Hindu festivals. On Monday, August 19, certain cities will experience bank closures on the occasion of the festival.

Bank holiday on Raksha Bandhan

According to the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) holiday list, the majority of private and public sector institutions in India will be closed today on August 19 for Raksha Bandhan. Before visiting a bank branch, it is advised to verify the bank’s closure schedule. This will ensure that your banking requirements are met promptly and effectively.

August 19: Raksha Bandhan

Banks will remain closed in Tripura (Agartala), Gujarat (Ahmedabad), Madhya Pradesh (Bhopal), Odisha (Bhubaneswar), Uttarakhand (Dehradun), Rajasthan (Jaipur), Uttar Pradesh (Kanpur & Lucknow), and Himachal Pradesh (Shimla).

Importantly, on August 20, banks will be closed in Kerala on account of ‘Sree Narayana Guru Jayanthi’.

However, you can still undertake transactions and manage other banking tasks despite bank holidays through online banking and ATMs. These facilities will not be affected by the bank closures. During this period, you can perform many mobile or net banking activities, as all online services will remain fully operational.

Vande Bharat Express Trains: Cost, Routes, and Schedules Explained

Vande Bharat Express Trains

The Vande Bharat Express is one of the most famous and high-speed trains in India that has many facilities to offer its passengers. These semi-high-speed trains have been launched by the Indian Railways to offer an international travel experience to the passengers.

Operating on some of the most densely connected routes in the country, the Vande Bharat Express is ideal for anyone who does not want to waste much time on a journey and at the same time desires comfort. In this article, you will get to know about Vande Bharat Express, the costs associated with its travel, probable routes, and schedules in this guide.

Table of Contents

Vande Bharat Express Trains: Top Features and Amenities

To enhance passenger comfort, these trains offer several top features and amenities to choose from:

Great Efficiency and Speed: These trains are built to run at an average speed of 160 km/h which allows them to reach their destination in less time as compared to traditional trains. These trains are scheduled to have fewer stoppages which is also a factor supporting its efficiency of being on time.

Comfortable Seats: The train offers its passengers with plush seating that includes a rotating chair in the executive class and a spacious sitting area. Gone are the times when you had to adjust with two other strangers in a row.

Modern Design: On a train journey, the best part is to glare outside the window to enjoy every scenic view in the journey but sometimes you may not get a window seat. So, looks like the problem is solved. These trains are built with big windows that allow passengers to enjoy the scenic view during their journey.

High-Tech Amenities: These trains are built with a touch of modern technology and hence provide amenities like wi-fi connectivity, bio-vacuum toilets, GPS-based passenger information systems, automated doors, and shockproof interiors. These facilities solve a lot of problems we face while riding a traditional train.

Food Options: The trains provide food options to the passengers on board while ensuring that they get quality and hygienic food during their journey. Earlier this was not an option, as we only had to eat what was available in the pantry.
