Vice Press Issues Remastered ‘Star Trek: The Motion Picture’ Poster Art Prints

Providing a perfect companion to their alternative poster art, Vice Press follows with art prints of the original poster design for Star Trek: The Motion Picture .

More than just a poster reprint

Following their announcement that they will offer alternative poster art for Star Trek movies  featuring new designs by some of today’s best talent, Vice Press is revealing another line featuring a full restoration of original movie poster art. First up, appropriately, will be an art print and poster release of the original poster for Star Trek: The Motion Picture  illustrated by the late Bob Peak. Peak did the poster art for the first five Star Trek films, and Vice Press has returned to his original source material to show his vintage work at its best. Artist Matt Ferguson reached out to Thomas Peak, Bob’s son, as well as David C. Fein, producer of Star Trek: The Motion Picture – Director’s Edition .  Their goal was to produce a print as close to the original source as possible using the highest quality assets.

An earlier announcement from Vice Press suggested that all the  Star Trek movies would eventually receive the same attention that has been given to The Motion Picture . In a recent press release, founding partner James Henshaw said that subsequent art may not be limited to Star Trek films, and perhaps fans can look forward to posters celebrating their favorite series entries as well:

“As fans ourselves, with this series we want to give fans of Star Trek the opportunity to collect artwork from both the cinematic and small screen universe in a form that is the highest possible quality.”

No comment was offered on whether “small screen universe” artwork would be new designs, restored original art, or both.

Quantities Not Limited

Unlike the alternative poster design released in September—a limited run which sold out in a few hours—the restored art print will be available on an open ordering basis, meaning that the number of prints produced will equal the number ordered: All fans who want a print will be able to get one. Orders will be open for one week, starting Wednesday, October 11th at 1 PM ET/ 10 AM PT. A separate foil variant of the poster will also be available in a limited run of 200. The regular edition will be £39.99 (about $52) and the foil edition £49.99 (about $65). Both will measure 24×36 inches and can be ordered directly from Vice Press .

Peak was simply one of the best in the business. His posters for TMP and APOCALYPSE NOW (which came out around the same time) are iconic.

Mondo's TMP Poster Available Friday

The human adventure is just beginning… again, and that’s thanks to Mondo ’s newest poster, which celebrates Star Trek: The Motion Picture . Alamo Drafthouse’s collectible art boutique will offer Star Trek: The Motion Picture , by Daniel Danger, starting tomorrow. The stark art combines black, blue and white in harnessing the spirit of the first TOS film, as well as The Motion Picture ’s credits, which are slyly tweaked to acknowledge Alamo Drafthouse as the poster’s publisher. The poster measures 24”x36,” and is hand numbered and printed by D&L Screen Printing. Star Trek: The Motion Picture will be available in a limited edition of 320 and priced at $45. Mondo will begin selling the poster at a random time tomorrow, so fans should follow @MondoNews for an “on-sale-now” announcement. Star Trek has a rich history of amazing artwork, and the posters of Bob Peak are considered some of the most seminal. Working alongside Bob Peak’s son, Thomas Peak, we have remastered Bob’s original artwork for release as fine art posters, starting with Star Trek: The Motion Picture.

As fans ourselves, with this series we want to give fans of Star Trek the opportunity to collect artwork from both the cinematic and small screen universe in a form that is the highest possible quality, honouring the legacy of the creatives involved while also bringing something new, which was achieved by Matt Ferguson with the support of David C. Fein, Producer of Star Trek: The Motion Picture - The Director's Edition

Star Trek: The Motion Picture will initially be available in two limited editions, a timed regular edition and a foil variant of 200, both 24x36 inches.

 The first release in this series, Star Trek: The Motion Picture by Matt Ferguson, sold out in only a couple of hours. To make sure more that as many Star Trek collectors as possible can pick up this edition, we are making the regular edition available for one whole week. This means the edition size will be dictated by the amount of people who purchase the release during this time.

  Star Trek: The Motion Picture by Bob Peak will be available exclusively from Vice Press on Wednesday the 11th of October at 6pm BST (UK)/ 1pm EST/ 10am PST (US). The Timed Edition will be available until the 17th of October at 6pm BST.

The Next Star Trek Series Has Officially Started Production

Production has officially begun on the next Star Trek series - Star Trek: Starfleet Academy .

The news was announced via an August 26 X post from the official Star Trek on Paramount+ social media account. The post, featuring images of the cast and crew of the upcoming series, was captioned with the message, "School is in session, cadets! Today marks the official start of production as the [ Star Trek ] Stage welcomes [ Starfleet Academy ]."

Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 Blu-Ray Review: The Final Season's Not Quite Starry Sendoff

The Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 Blu-Ray checks all the boxes, but it's not as grand as the Paramount+ show deserves for its final outing.

Star Trek: Starfleet Academy is being helmed by showrunners Alex Kurtzman and Noga Landau, the former of whom will be directing the first two of the series' planned ten episodes. Among the cast of Starfleet Academy are Academy Award-winner Holly Hunter, who will portray the series' captain and chancellor of the eponymous school, as well as Academy Award-nominee Paul Giamatti, who will take on the role of the first season's recurring antagonist. The series' roster of cadets is currently comprised of George Hawkins, Zoë Steiner, Bella Shepard, Kerrice Brooks, Sandro Rosta, and Karim Diané, who will be joined by returning Star Trek: Discovery actor Oded Fehr as Admiral Vance and Star Trek: Voyager star Robert Picardo as The Doctor.

The Plot of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy

As the official synopsis for the series describes, " Star Trek: Starfleet Academy introduces viewers to a young group of cadets who come together to pursue a common dream of hope and optimism. Under the watchful and demanding eyes of their instructors, they discover what it takes to become Starfleet officers as they navigate blossoming friendships, explosive rivalries, first loves and a new enemy that threatens both the Academy and the Federation itself." It is currently expected that production on Starfleet Academy will run through to 2025, setting the series up for what Kurtzman has noted could be a 2026 release date .

This Live-Action Star Trek Character is Quietly Crushing it In Star Trek: Prodigy

Star Trek: Prodigy introduces a new generation of fans to a new generation of characters, but one live-action legacy hero is crushing her role.

At the time of Star Trek: Star Fleet 's confirmation back in 2023 , Kurstzman and Landau released a joint statement inviting audiences to "Explore the galaxy" and "Captain your destiny." The statement continued, "For the first time in over a century, our campus will be re-opened to admit individuals a minimum of 16 Earth years (or species equivalent) who dream of exceeding their physical, mental and spiritual limits, who value friendship, camaraderie, honor and devotion to a cause greater than themselves... Today we encourage all who share our dreams, goals and values to join a new generation of visionary cadets as they take their first steps toward creating a bright future for us all. Apply today! If you want to know how difficult it is getting 70mm film prints screened at movie houses these days, just talk to Jerry Blackburn.

Blackburn is the senior manager and director of public programming for the Beverly Hills-based Fine Arts Theatre. Built in 1937, the repertory theater is one of the handful of historic movie palaces that still exist in Los Angeles. It’s also one of the few places in town where you can actually see films in 70mm. 

This Labor Day Weekend, Blackburn has rounded up several 70mm prints for the “Star Trek” 60th Anniversary Series. All weekend, the first six films in the “Trek” movie franchise will be shown, accompanied by post-screening discussions from special guests. This isn’t the first time Blackburn curated a 70mm film series for Angeleno Trekkies. In the summer of 2010, Blackburn created “Star Trek Saturdays,” doing midnight screenings of the OG “Trek” films over at the Laemmle Royal in West LA. Special guests also showed up  — most notably, original castmates Koenig and George Takei.

“I, myself, have always been a fan of 70mm and I saw some of these pictures in the theater, in 70mm, when they first came out,” Blackburn says over the phone. “The picture resolution is much better than 35mm. I feel that the sound on the mag tracks is better than other films. And I know that there are a lot of people who like to see things in 70mm, specifically. And there are so few prints left of various things and seldom do they make new ones. And I get a very positive reaction when we play these.”

“Trek” installments 2 through 6 will be shown in 70mm, but “Star Trek: The Motion Picture” will not be. (Blackburn will play the digitally-restored “Director’s Edition” that dropped in 2022.) It turns out the least beloved, notoriously troubled ‘Trek’ film had problems getting blown up to 70mm. “They never finished the first print,” says Blackburn. “They did reel one and reel two, and [director] Robert Wise looked at it and – they had bookings for it – he didn’t like it. And it was too close to distribution or opening day for them to try to fix it.” (According to the in70mm.com website , a 70mm print was eventually struck and had screenings at 70mm film festivals and other venues a couple years later.) 

The prints for “Wrath of Khan,” “The Search for Spock” and “The Voyage Home” are archival prints straight from the Paramount vaults. Blackburn was given strict guidelines in order to borrow the prints. “They’ve been run very little and the only way I was really allowed to have them is if I had this lineup of talent, and [the prints] were not easy to get,” he says. “I would have to have a lineup of guests and, because they are archival prints, there’s an inspection fee. That’s for them to assure what’s the condition it’s in before they give it to me. So, when I give it back to them, it’s in the same condition.”

Blackburn thankfully wrangled a nice collection of guests to attend, including “Khan” director Nicholas Meyer, longtime producer Ralph Winter, actresses Robin Curtis & Catherine Hicks, and writer/film preservationist Michael Matessino, who supervised the 4K restoration of the first “Trek.” The big get is filmmaker/author Adam Nimoy, aka the son of Leonard Nimoy. He’ll be there for a double feature of “Khan” and “For the Love of Spock,” a 2016 documentary Nimoy directed about his dad and the impact his iconic character has had on popular culture. Blackburn admits that he threw in a “Spock” showing as an appreciative bonus. “It wasn’t that he requested it,” he says, “but I asked if he would like to do that. And he didn’t object to it.” Nimoy will also be signing copies of recently released memoir “The Most Human,” which gives a very revealing look at his life and the often contentious relationship he had with his father.

During a Zoom call, Nimoy discussed how pleased he is that his tribute to his old man will be paired up with his finest performance in a “Trek” film. “[‘Spock’] in particular is really a celebration of the character of Spock,” says Nimoy. “It’s a celebration of this incredible character he created – that’s number one. It’s also a celebration of Leonard Nimoy. I mean, a multi-talented individual, a real renaissance man with a lot of ability, a lot of drive. You know, it’s a celebration of life.” 

This weekend of screenings will most likely be heavily populated with fans and novices fully ready to go warp speed with the USS Enterprise crew. But, even after all these years of screening super-cinematic spectacles, Blackburn remains pessimistic. In this age of people preferring to stay home instead of spending a night at the movies, you can hardly blame him. “I hope that it does well,” he says. “I hope that it sells out. It will do well. As far as it selling out, I’m not sure about that exactly.”

But even if every screening isn’t sold out, he’s looking forward to giving those who are in attendance one helluva experience. “I want people to have a good time while they’re here,” he says. “I want to hear them laugh. I want to hear the applause. We played the 70mm print of ‘Spaceballs’ in May. It wasn’t one of Mel Brooks’s better pictures, but they knew all of the lines and they laughed at every joke, regardless of how many times they’ve seen it. They came in and they had a good time. They were smiling on the way out. They were happy. That’s what I care about.”
