The LEGENDARY Steel Donkey Bike Tour Barcelona no 1 ride

BOOK ONLINE

The steel donkeys experience.

Steel Donkey Bike Tours are the first and only alternative bicycle rides in Barcelona. Unlike with standard tours of the city, you won’t simply be learning about  Barcelona  you’ll be living it too… ride with us and we’ll search out the best patatas bravas in BCN, look around obscure but beautiful attractions like the Hospital de Sant Pau and the amazing neoclassical cemetery of Poblenou, stop off at local markets for delicious snacks or vintage threads, and recount the stories of the city under the shade of palm trees and in picturesque squares.

Unlike with standard tours of the city, you won’t simply be learning about Barcelona you’ll be living it too…

We’re not about fixed itineraries and reciting facts to you which you could read in a guidebook, we’re about going on adventures on our trusty steeds (bikes, but you can refer to them as Steel Donkeys if you like…) and revealing parts of the city which many locals don’t even know about!

No two tours are quite the same, but amongst the cool experiences we might enjoy are shopping for kitsch souvenirs at a local flea market, cycling along Barcelona’s resplendent beach promenade, meeting a legendary stuffed parrot and patron saint, enjoying a refreshing glass of orxata (tigernut milk drink) on the tree-lined Rambla del Poblenou, and exploring the back streets of the Borne district – with its traditional shops, Gothic churches and sordid secrets.

We always ride in small groups of no more than 8 guests, which makes it easy for us to get around and gives us the freedom of the city…

We always ride in small groups of no more than 8 guests, which makes it easy for us to get around and gives us the freedom of the city and plenty of flexibility to enjoy our day. That’s what makes us so different to other bicycle tours of Barcelona and maybe why we’ve been recommended by so many in the travel media, including Lonely Planet Magazine, The Guardian, Harpers Bazaar, Easyjet Traveller, Budget Traveller and many many more. We’ve also been awarded a Tripadvisor Certificate of Excellence for the 6th year in a row, making us a Tripadvisor Hall of Fame winner.

I can honestly say this is the best city cycle tour I have ever been on. I was slightly daunted beforehand about the prospect of cycling around a strange city, but the route we took was largely off road or on quiet back streets. Our guide was fantastic, and knew a lot about the city. It was great to do something a little alternative and he had lots of pithy stories about random things that allowed us to get under the skin of the city. And the cycle back along the playa with the sun setting over the city was sensational.

We aren’t the type to take a tradition tour but this ride was perfect for us. We rode all over Barcelona, saw a factory that recycles city banners into bags. We also had refreshment at a great cafe that is part of a design studio in a former warehouse, rode all over the waterfront, on streets we’d never know, and looked at the cemetery. We were out for about 4 hours, but and the ride was tailored for whatever one would want. Also, we were able to keep the rental bikes for another day and use them to ride to some famous Gaudi sites on our own. Excellent!

Steel Donkey Bike Tours

Kick ass alternative tours of Barcelona

  • Guided Tour
  • Gothic Quarter

Kicking up quite a fuss since their inception, Steel Donkey Bike Tours have become famous as Barcelona’s first alternative two-wheel tours, and indeed one of the first truly alternative tours anywhere in the world, understanding travellers’ needs to connect with the real city.

Unlike with the city’s many other bike tours , no two rides are quite the same, and rather than follow a strict itinerary, crammed full of recited facts, the vibe is all about setting off around the city with a knowledgeable local as your guide.

You’ll discover little-known secrets of the city, enjoy classic snacks and drinks (like churros and orxata ) at local hang outs, and cycle through some of Barcelona’s most scenic squares and streets, far away from the tourist maelstrom.

One of the things that makes the experience so special, and a little more expensive than some tours, is that Steel Donkey only rides with a maximum of eight people – other companies take up to 20 people at a time! This enables you to actually stop off and interact with the city: at markets, vintage shops, hidden bars and more, rather than feel like another tourist on the Barcelona merry-go-round.

With amazing Tripadvisor reviews (they’ve won a Certificate of Excellence every year they’ve been in operation), and recommendations from the likes of Lonely Planet Magazine, Easyjet and Guardian Travel, you can be confident you’re going to have a fantastic and unique experience.

Overall it was a great experience! 5 6 months ago
  • "Super fun bike tour!" - by Gina We love doing a bike tour through a new city, and have done one in Rome, London, NYC and now Barcelona. This was the best one yet!! Definitely one of the highlights of our trip! 5 11 months ago

  • "Fun Bike Tour" - by Lauren Chelf We did a bike tour last week and it was so much fun. It was me, my husband, and our 21 year old daughter who is currently living in Barcelona. My husband & I loved it b/c we got to see so much of the city and our daughter loved it b/c she got to see parts of the city that she had not had the opportunity to explore yet. Our guide was very good (but sadly I have forgotten his name but he was from South America). Loved stopping into Bar Leo for a snack and getting to meet Leo and her granddaughter. We felt very safe on the bike paths and sidewalks. I would highly recommend this tour. 5 2 years ago
  • "Great tour" - by Johan De Bus We had a great afternoon. Bikes were comfortable, guide was amazing and spontaneous. She explained us very interesting things and brought us to places we have never seen before in Barcelona. Definitely worth the money! 5 2 years ago
  • "The alternative tour, well worth it" - by Ian Thomson We asked Mariana to show us some alternative sights and she did not disappoint. This was a really good and insightful tour covering a lot of ground but with plenty time to take in the history and hear Mariana's informative comments on the way. I would highly recommend this tour for anyone interested in history and looking to get to know Barcelona that bit better. 5 2 years ago
  • "Brilliant and Authentic Tour " - by Sam Wilson Mariana was an incredible tour guide. We saw hidden parts of such a beautiful city, places we would have never discovered ourselves. The tour was perfectly pitched and could not be faulted. A tour which combined moments of raw emotion, humour and history. The bikes were comfortable and Barcelona is the perfect place to cycle (incredibly flat). Thank you Steele Donkey - we will recommend! 5 4 years ago
  • "Amazing tour!!" - by Michele Cicatello We had a tour with Mari and she was absolutely incredible. Super high energy, fun, she kept things interesting and took us to off the beaten path to places you would never encounter on a typical tour. It was such a unique view of the city by bike and so easy to get everywhere. HIGHLY recommend viewing barcelona from the back of a steel donkey! 5 5 years ago
  • "HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!" - by Mariam Bayoumy Best city tour to go off the ordinary route of the highlighted touristic places and see the true heart of the town. I loved the idea of riding in a limited small group, it made manoeuvring through the narrow city streets easier and I felt safe because no one can be forgotten behind..we all can keep an eye on each other. Definitly the highlight of my vacation. 5 5 years ago

  • "Off the common path" - by Toomas We don't usually do guided tours, but this Steel Donkey ride seemed interesting and it was very much fun. Usual tourist places can be visited on your own with the help of guide book (this is what we did), but the Steel Donkey took us off the common path to funky places with interesting stories. Definitely worth the money! 5 6 years ago

I’ve been living in Barcelona for 3 years now, and I’d like to think that I’ve done a fair amount of exploring. I’ve done various walking tours , entered in the more important architectural buildings and museums, and of course been in my share of tapas bars . However, I had never explored this beautiful city by bike .

So when the opportunity presented itself, I just had to try it out! Beautiful Views + Sunny Day + Some Exercise = sounds like a good combination to me!

Steel Donkey Bike Tour

We met our guide from Steel Donkey Tours , Mariana, at 10am in front of a bike shop in the center of Barcelona . After some brief introductions, we were off! I hadn’t ridden a bike properly in years, so after a rather awkward adjustment of the seat, climb on top (I’m not the most graceful) and start, we headed straight into the center of the city. First up was the Plaça de Sant Jaume where there are two, very important government buildings: the historic Palace Generalitat de Catalunya and the City Hall of Barcelona. Mariana was kind enough to explain to us a little bit more about the buildings themselves and the history, and then we were off again.

I must say there is a bit of a learning curve if you’re not used to going bike riding, especially in the center of the city. There are lots of people, locals and tourists alike, and you can’t be shy ringing your little bell! I was sure I was going to hit someone, but -spoiler alert- I didn’t! Hooray!

We then went through some small alleyways to the charming little square of St. Felip Neri, which actually holds quite a tragic past. On the facade of the small church you can still see the damage of two bombs that went off there during the Spanish civil war in 1938. On this particular day, there were actually some events going on and there was an all-male choir singing softly.

After contemplating the beautiful history of this square, we then rounded the Cathedral of Barcelona. I, a complete bike beginner, didn’t realize that there were brakes on both sides of the bike’s handlebars (I was only aware of one of them), and found out the hard way when we were going down a relatively small hill and I nearly rammed down some innocent passersby. My bad. But hey, I didn’t forget about that for the rest of the trip!

Mariana led us to the famous mural called “ The World Begins with Every Kiss ,” by Joan Fontcuberta. From afar, it appears to be just a pixelated picture. When you get closer, you can see that each ‘pixel’ is actually a photo. The idea was that locals would send in a picture of their “moment of freedom,” and then the artist put them all together to form this photo. I didn’t know the story behind it, although I had seen it various times on Instagram , so it was a beautiful thing to learn about.

It was then back towards the Cathedral, through a number of winding streets, and into a small alcove that I had had no idea even existed. Inside, surrounded by little apartment windows, we found some ancient Corinthian columns, dating all the way back to the first century BC. It was such a strange sight to see these ancient pillars, still intact, and surrounded in this way. But super interesting to discover!

Mariana, our guide, asked us if we had ever been here before, and I had to admit that I hadn’t. But my husband, who is Catalan, said “Oh yeah, I think I came here on a school trip once.” What a life! I remember in school we just went to some lame, local aquarium (no offense to Californian aquariums…).

Then it was time to start heading away from the Gothic neighborhood and into El Born, the eclectic, beautiful neighborhood I have come to love. We stopped by a free, local museum, and also took a moment to admire the beautiful Palau de la Musica Catalana (which is totally worth taking a look at, both inside and out!). We also passed by the beautiful Santa Caterina market, marveled at the lovely Basilica de Santa Maria del Mar, and then finally found ourselves at a lovely little cafe for a much deserved break.

Although I had been to most of these places already (think – I’ve been living here for 3 years ), it was a much different perspective having seen it from a bike, and also hearing more history behind everything (I’m not a big history buff, but it is truly interesting to learn more about Barcelona !). Plus, I’m horrible with directions, and the small winding streets of Barcelona always confuse me, so I use Google maps to this day. So it was nice being able to follow someone around, be led, and just have to worry about not hitting anyone (which, believe you me, was a full-time job). It’s a great way for people visiting the city to get more acquainted and familiar with everything before venturing off on their own.

After a little pastry and some artesanal soda, we were off again – this time to Mercat del Born, which was once a lively, local market until they found 1700’s ruins underneath. Now, you can go take a peek inside for free, or enter below for a small fee.

Then, we meandered through the lovely Parc de la Ciutadella. It’s a fantastic place to wander on a sunny day, with the opportunity to take a romantic boat ride, sunbathe, or admire the beautiful fountains. We also caught a glimpse of the Arc de Triomf, as we then rode on up into Poblenou to get a close-up of the Torre Agbar, a giant colorful tower seen from all parts of Barcelona.

Our guide, Mariana, was very knowledgeable about small, obscure little places to get a little touch of history in the strangest of places. In Poblenou, we went to a little outdoor art exhibit, which was hung from the outer walls of an old factory. From there, we went down the Rambla de Poblenou, which is a nice little street littered with various bars and restaurants. That’s definitely a fun area to go around and spend the day (or night)!

Then, came the best part – a bike ride along the beach. It was a gorgeous day and, as such, there were tons of people out taking advantage. The boardwalk was quite crowded with pedestrians, roller skaters, and other bikers, but we somehow found ourselves without too many problems, admiring the view. There was a lovely breeze as we went, and the views couldn’t be beat.

I would’ve liked to spend more time on the boardwalk, perhaps going a bit slower, and stopping here and there for photo opportunities. But I guess that just means I’ll have to go back on my own sometime!

All good things must come to an end, and I must admit, my ass was starting to hurt (guess I need more experience). We were guided through Barceloneta and back into the Gothic neighborhood which was probably the scariest part for me, because we were also going quite fast in order to make it back to the bike shop on time. The busy streets can be quite scary on a bike, so if you’re a nervous rider like me, be sure to communicate this to your guide.

Even though my ass was hurting and I wanted to chug water as if I’d run a marathon, I was sad to have the tour come to an end. It was definitely a fun and unique experience I’m not likely to forget, and I have Steel Donkey Tours to thank for that!

If you’re visiting Barcelona and enjoy an active visit of the city, do not hesitate to join them on one of their awesome tours! It isn’t a very strenuous workout (thankfully most of Barcelona is flat), but with the heat of the oncoming summer and the humidity, you definitely feel tired by the end. Make sure to bring water and sunscreen, and of course wear comfortable clothes! Sunglasses are always a plus.

6 Amazing Tapas to Try in Barcelona

Living in Copenhagen where we own no car and only travel by bike (and bus and train) I would love to see a city on two wheels! But here people are expecting bicyclists, we even have roads and stoplights just for bikes! We rented bikes in Madrid and realized quickly how much that infrastructure helps, as Madrid did NOT have it. I expect Barcelona is the same? But with a guide, it would be amazing to see the hidden corners and places off the tourist track. So very cool. And I LOVE that mosaic with the images. Beautiful. Thank you …  Read more »

Yes, I remember Copenhagen having a fantastic bike system! It’s a shame that many other cities aren’t like that, but Barcelona has actually recently been improving their system. Now in the El Born area/Poblenou at least there are specified bike lanes, stoplights and whatnot, so it is very helpful. Thanks so much for reading and sharing your experience 🙂

California Globetrotter

I also did a bike tour while in Barcelona, but I thought at times it was quite dangerous as traffic is terrible and people drive like crazy, there aren’t any bikes lanes either! But it was fun, but we didn’t get to stop really and take a look at anything, only from the outside. #FarawayFiles

Do you remember when you did the bike tour? In the last year I believe they have improved the bike system! Some areas have specific lanes, stoplights, etc. But it was true, in certain areas without those systems it was a bit crazy, especially in the center of the city. I’m glad you had fun regardless though! Thanks for reading and sharing your experience 🙂

Clare (Suitcases and Sandcastles)

Isn’t it great that you got to see a new side of a city you’ve been living in for three years? I love discovering a city by bike. It’s a good way of getting around in London, Paris and Amsterdam for starters. Thanks for sharing on #FarawayFiles

Yes, it most definitely was! I’ve never done a bike tour in any other city, but now I’m definitely going to keep it in mind for my next trip! Thanks for reading 🙂

Kids of the Wild

I’ve never done a city tour by bike but what a great way to see things you wouldn’t normally, especially with a guide. Great photos too. #Citytripping

I highly recommend it! Since this tour, I’ve rented bikes in another city to be able to see more… I think I’m hooked to traveling by bike now haha. Thanks for reading 🙂

I’ve been to Barcelona (but didn’t take a bike tour) and loved it. In fact, I’ve never taken a bike tour. Now I’m asking myself – why not? I’ll definitely do it next time I get a chance. Thanks for the idea! #citytripping

Seriously! Why not?! Haha I can’t blame you, it was my first, but since this I’ve tried another in a different city and it was just as great! It is definitely a fun way to see more of a city. Thanks for reading 🙂

I also did a bike tour in Barcelona which was crazy, but we saw totally different things! These are all new pieces for me! But I’ll never ride a bike in Barcelona again! Drivers are crazy there! #CityTripping

Haha how long ago was that? Apparently in the last few years they’ve improved their bike lanes and whatnot. The scariest parts for me were in the pedestrian areas of the Gothic Quarter, just because of all of the people. Thankfully I didn’t kill anyone or get killed though ha

haha… my first thought was that it would be scary to ride a bike in Barcelona!!! But it sounds like it gave you some interesting perspective. #citytripping

Haha definitely scary at first, especially in pedestrian zones, but surprisingly more calm on the main streets! It definitely was worth it 🙂 Thanks for reading!

Great idea to get out and about to visit a city, our eldest lads did a similar tour of Helsinki and saw so much in such a short time.

Ooh, I’d love to try that out in Helsinki! Definitely a fun way to explore. Thanks for reading 🙂

Loved the tour of Barcelona. Perfect for families --- our two kids liked it and we all got a great workout. Our guide, Augustine, was super cool and had some great tips for places to eat, drink, and visit. Highly recommend.

We had so much fun. I thought the four hours would be long, but it went fast, and we saw so much . It was a great way to see the city. Our tour guide was great. They were super flexible when I asked to change my tour time. Highly highly recommend!

REal tour - not the tourist traps, save that for the bus (also great - just complemets this tour well). We really enjoyed our tour and especially our tour guide Maria. As promised Steel Donkey does not take you to the Sangrada Familia or other major sites,.. instead you get a glimpse of how real Barcelona citizens may live with some hint as to what recent changes have made to their lives. Prior to this tour I was unclear how separate a culture Catalunya is from the rest of Spain. Maria did an excellent job educating us and offering a view into the politics and recent relevant Barcelona history. Until we took this tour almost everything we were hearing about happened hundreds of years ago - this tour made it real, and we got to ride some of the nicer routes in the process, to areas we would not have checked out for any other reason. We particularly enjoyed how Maria would see people she knew on the ride, and take us to multi-generational businesses. It felt like riding bikes with a friend at home as she was a true local telling people that walk on bike paths to be careful and be aware (I wish more people would do that!)

What a fun day, learned about Barcelona, created a meal at a local market, and enjoyed meeting new people while biking. My teenage son had a great time! From the beach to beauty of the city, this is an authentic experience. The guides were fun to be with and very interactive!

Q: How can you see the major sights of the old town of Barcelona, 4 historic neighbourhoods, the heights of Montjuïc, beautiful parks and glorious beachfront – all in just 4 hours?

A: The legendary Steel Donkey Bike Tours !

Steel Donkey Bike Tours

Friday 10AM on a hazy June morning. It was time to mount up at Donkey HQ on Carrer de Cervantes in the beating heart of the Gothic Quarter .

Our guide Nadim (originally from Lebanon) warmly greeted us and set us up with our trusty steeds. I was pleasantly surprised by the comfort of the ‘sit up and beg’ style bikes, with wide saddles, fat tyres, automatic gear shifts and a bell to help clear your path. Sturdy as a donkey, which also happens to be a symbol of Catalonia.

 Plaça Sant Jaume

Having a chuckle in Plaça Sant Jaume

Our first stop was the nearby Plaça Sant Jaume, the political center of Barcelona. Nadim showed us City Hall and the Palau de la Generalitat, pointing out the various different flags. Inevitably we got into an interesting conversation about the Catalan independence movement. Fascinating to know that we were also standing in the former center of the Roman city of Barcino. Veni. Vidi. Amavi.

Gothic Quarter Bikes

Gothic Quarter Backstreets

We then made our way down to Port Vell where we learned about the Columbus Monument, built in 1888 for the Exposición Universal de Barcelona. Nadim explained that much of the interesting architecture of the city is tied to the Universal Exposition of 1888, the International Exposition of 1929 and of course the 1992 Summer Olympics. From the port we made our way through the Gothic Quarter to the towering hill of Montjuïc.

Montjuïc stands 185 meters high. Antoni Gaudí limited the height of La Sagrada Família to 172.5 metres because he did not want a work of man to exceed a work created by God…

Jardins de Mossèn Costa i Llobera

Cactus Coalition

It was here we got a little exercise, winding up the mostly gentle slopes of the “Jewish Mountain”. Along the way we passed through the  Jardins de Mossèn Costa i Llobera , a colorful garden of cactus and succulent plants with wonderful views out to the Mediterranean Sea.

Miramar

We stopped to take in the lofty views by the restaurant Martínez. From here Nadim pointed out interesting buildings that stand out along the coast looking north, such as Torre de les Aigües and Torre Mapfre.

Just around the corner we were treated to sweeping views over the city that allowed Nadim to identify landmarks such as La Sagrada Família, Santa Maria del Mar and Torre de Collserola.

Rambla del Raval

It was time to head down the hill to our next destination, El Raval . The name originates from the arabic ‘A-Rabal’ meaning ‘on the margin’, as it was once situated outside the city’s walls. We stopped in the Rambla del Raval by Fernando Botero’s sculpture of a chubby cat. Here Nadim gave us the inside scoop on the multi-ethnic and bohemian neighborhood.

MACBA

Hipster Heaven

We then glided up to the MACBA (Barcelona Museum of Contemporary Art) on Plaça dels Àngels. This is a very trendy spot where ‘all the young dudes’ (remember that song?) love to hang out and perform daring feats on skateboards. We got our street art fix satisfied by the classic Keith Haring mural adorning one of the nearby walls.

Gothic Quarter

The Great Enchantress

From there we made our way back towards the Gothic Quarter , winding through the seductive labyrinth sitting on over 2,000 years of history.

Santa Maria del Mar

The Cathedral by the Sea

Crossing Via Laietana we arrived in El Born and made our way to the magnificent 14th century church, Santa Maria del Mar.

The Catalan Gothic church was built at the the apex of the kingdom of Aragon’s maritime and mercantile power. We had time to go in and take a look around the interior, which has the widest spaced columns of any Gothic church in Europe.

Passeig de Lluís Companys

Arc de Triomf

We took a pause on Passeig de Lluís Companys, named after the President of Catalonia during the Spanish Civil War. The Arc de Triomf at the top was built by architect Josep Vilaseca i Casanovas as the main access gate for the 1888 Barcelona World Fair.

Nadim explained that the Mudéjar style was used. Characterized by the use of glazed red brickwork, the style was developed by the Moors in the 12th century and it can also seen in Casa Vicens .

Cascada del Parque de la Ciudadela

Cascada del Parque de la Ciudadela

From there it was a short ride into  Parc de la Ciutadella . It was here that Philip V built the citadel of Barcelona during the War of the Spanish Succession.

Once inside we made our way to the Cascada (fountain), the most emblematic monument of the park. It was built between 1875 and 1888 by Josep Fontserè with help from a young Antoni Gaudí .

Port Olímpic

Port Olímpic

The morning haze had burned off by the time we made it to the beach at Port Olímpic and it was a glorious Barcelona spring afternoon. Nadim told us stories behind the history of the seafront and how much it has changed since the time before the Olympics. He also gave us some pro tips on the best local beaches to enjoy.

Barceloneta

Barceloneta

Our last stop was in Barceloneta , overlooking the Playa de San Sebastián and Ricardo Bofill’s landmark W Hotel . The tour was a fantastic way to take in the city’s sights, peppered with captivating stories and anecdotes by our inspired guide Nadim. Highly recommended, a tour not to be missed!
