If you are travelling with children, how do you choose the best Sydney Harbour boat tour, the one that will suit your specific family? You definitely need to find the most kid-friendly cruises. Read on and let me give you some thoughts, gleaned from 20 years of exploring Sydney Harbour with my four children.

Sydney Harbour Fast Facts

Now you already know that Sydney has one of the most beautiful natural harbours in the world.

From North and South Heads in the east to the head of Parramatta River, Sydney Harbour is 19km long and has an area of  55 km². The shoreline of Sydney Harbour has many bays, beaches and inlets, stretching a staggering 317 kilometres.

Harbour Cruises Sydney: What To Look For

A day out on the water is a joy, if you ask me. Except when it isn’t.

We have had a few low moments when taking our kids out on Sydney Harbour cruises. A Middle Harbour cruise with a completely hyperactive two-and-a-half-year-old with an urge to climb and no fear of heights was just a touch stressful. That was a Sydney harbour boat tour never to be repeated, we should have just waited until that son was older and calmer.

We’ve had some fab times too though. Here are some things to look out for:

  • What age are your children, will they stay still as you cruise?
  • Where does the cruise leave from, is it easy for you to get to (most leave from Darling Harbour or Circular Quay.)
  • Do you need to eat on the cruise? There are family dinner cruise options and even more lunch cruise options. Most cruises do serve food of some sort however I always pack extra snacks too
  • Do you know Sydney well? If not, a cruise with commentary will give you lots of interesting information
  • Check the Sydney weather forecast . Book close to the day if you can to make sure you get good weather, or make sure your booking can be cancelled or the date changed.

Sydney Harbour Tall Ships Cruise s

A Tall Ship Family Pirate Cruise on Sydney Harbour

Setting off from Campbell Cove, The Rocks, just a short walk from Circular Quay, a tall ships cruise will take your family right back in time. Sailing ships set off from here over the centuries and the spirit of many salty sea dogs sails with you. I think these tall ships make the best Sydney Harbour Cruise for families – my kids adored them.

The captains tend to be very amusing and there is always a good commentary about both the ships and the Sydney Harbour sights you pass.

The Twilight Dinner Cruise is one of the bestsellers, check availability here,

But with younger children, an Afternoon Cruise or a Lunch Cruise might be best.  You will often find extra options in the school holidays too.

Jet Boating On Sydney Harbour

Jet boating on Sydney Harbour with kids really is a thrill and it is our second fave Sydney Harbour cruise option. But it is not cheap. Prices range from about $70 to around $90. You will find some special offers and discounts at times too.

The kids absolutely loved the ride though, and they weren’t totally hysterical with fear either. The jet boats leave from Circular Quay on the Opera House side.

2 Day Hop On Hop Off Harbour Cruise Ferry Ticket

I really recommend this as a great way of exploring Sydney and its Harbour, at a low cost and with a great variety of places to get on and off.  This ticket costs $50 for adults and $29 for children.

You can hop on and off at:

•  Darling Harbour : so much to see and do! •  Watsons Bay : beautiful walks, beaches and great fish and chips •  Luna Park : Enjoy the rides or have a swim at the cool pool •  Circular Quay : Stop to eat or explore the shops, museums and art galleries •  Taronga Zoo : meet Australian fauna and some other exotic animals too •  Shark Island : A wonderful island for a BYO picnic and a swim

Small Group Harbour Cruise, With Secret Beaches

This is a 3 hour tour and will take you to places other tours don’t. You also get a chance to get out and explore two beaches. The group is small and you have your own tour guide so can ask lots of questions and will learn a lot about Sydney’s history, the massive houses you will pass and the natural environment and wildlife.

The cost of $129 for adults and $99 for children, so it’s a bit more expensive, but much more personal.  There are short walks at Watson Bay and a visit to North Head’s Quarantine Station which is a truly amazing and unique place to visit. My children have loved their trips to the Quarantine Station.

Check dates and book ticket for this Small Group Harbour Cruise here.

These cruises usually take you out beyond Sydney Harbour into the open sea. Whilst seeing breaching whales can never be guaranteed, there is a good chance you will see them in the right season.

sydney harbour cheap cruise

Cheaper Harbour Cruises Sydney

At just $29 per person, the Captain Cook Cruises 90-Minute Harbour Cruise with Live Music and Tapas is the most economical cruise that I could find to tell readers about.

Of course, it’s even cheaper to just ride around Sydney Harbour by ferry, it is really good fun to explore by yourself, but there’s no expert commentary of course. But if a Sydney Harbour day cruise like this one still feels too costly (it all adds up when you have a big family) then rides on the ferries do the job well too.

Customer Reviews

Wonderful, leisurely sail around sydney harbour.

A thoroughly enjoyable jaunt, and so quintessentially ‘Sydney’.Much more relaxed and easy going than expected, with great laughs and plenty of history with host Howard and Captain (?) Andy.A really great way to see all the sights of Sydney Harbour, including some very interesting buildings complete with informative commentary. We loved the friendly, nostalgic atmosphere on the ship. The mast climb was a highlight of our Sydney trip.

Awesome Sunset Cruise

What a great afternoon/evening. Keegan (the M.C.) was great as were the rest of the crew. Really friendly & helpful AND the “deck girls” – fearless. (climbing up the rigging & setting the sails) Sydney harbour was as always – magnificent. Food was great as were the people we met on board. The mast climb is an ABSOLUTE MUST and the views of Sydney Harbour from the Crows Nest are out of this world. Hardest part is getting the world to hold still whilst you try to take pictures up the mast. !!! Summary…. MUST DO.

Mast Climb Was Amazing!

Coming from Sydney I was not sure I would enjoy. How wrong can you be! It was great, Sydney turned on a gorgeous day and I would highly recommend the mast climb, it was a little hard work for us over 50’s but I got there in the finish.

A Must-do Experience

I have lived in Sydney all my life, but to see the city skyline at sunset & lit up at night from out in the harbour towards Watsons Bay was a new experience. It was fantastic, must-do experience!

Tall Ship Experience, Lunch Cruise

Vintage sailing on Sydney Harbour is quite indescribable. Not to be missed (or forgotten)! A great ship, great crew and great food made for an absolutely splendid sailing adventure.

Great Way to See Sydney Harbour!

I have lived in Sydney for over 36 years have never seen the harbour quite like this before. This is a magical experience whilst taking a step back in time. The crew were so friendly, the food was great and the view spectacular. I couldn’t think of a better way to spend an afternoon!

Great Day Out

What a fantastic day. Well organised, excellent food. Great helpful staff who really knew their stuff. I would recommend to anyone with a love of boats or anyone wanting a great way to see the Harbour.

Highly Recommended

I would highly recommend this cruise to anyone who is looking for an enjoyable & relaxing couple of hours on the Harbour. A wonderful experience to be aboard a Tall Ship with such fascinating history. This is a must do cruise!!

Best Way to See Sydney Harbour

The best way to see Sydney is from the Harbour. The boat and the sails were extra special; we even had the opportunity to climb up the Mast to get an extra special view of Sydney. The staff were professional, welcoming and encouraging. Spend the afternoon with the fun crew at Tall Ships and have a ball.

Thrilled with Every Moment

We chose the afternoon sailing cruise and were thrilled with every moment. Sydney looks its best from the deck of a real ship, with the breeze on your face and a cool drink in your hand. We had an absolutely splendid, entertaining and interesting sailing adventure, on a great ship with a great crew!

Unique Sydney Harbour Cruise

A spectacular and relaxing way to see Sydney from the harbour. Raise the sails, turn off the engine and float along whilst sipping a flute of bubbly, viewing Sydney in a truly unique way. Top marks to all!

Spectacular Sydney Harbour Cruise

What a wonderful combination of hospitality, food, bubbly, and a great experience on board! You can get involved in sailing the ship, or, like me, one can just kick back, be a champagne member of the crew and love spectacular Sydney Harbour from the deck of a beautiful Tall Ship.

Incredible Sydney Harbour Views

A step back in time on the most spectacular harbour. Incredible Sydney Harbour views with a very friendly crew. What a great experience on a well-cared for and much loved tall ship. Watching the sails rise was a highlight and it was lovely to be able to simply explore the ship at leisure.

Traditional Sydney Harbour Cruising

I admire these people for wanting to keep the tradition of these majestic sailing ships alive. The boat is beautiful, the food and wine superb and Sydney at sunset is striking.

Canapés Delicious

The great thing about this cruise is the charming crew, full of life and love for their job. The cruise is a step back in time, the wine and canapés delicious, the entertainment lovely. I could have gazed at the waves, the wind and the sails forever. If you love sailing, or being on the water this is an incredible way to experience Sydney Harbour.

Romantic All-Inclusive Night Out

Drinks and canapés were served in abundance as we motored out to Sydney Heads and the beautiful scenery passed us by. I would definitely do this again; it was a relaxing, romantic all-inclusive night out.

Great Experience – Highly Recommended

Great host in Andrew and Captain Andy and friendly crew. Great experience, much more interesting than your normal pre-recorded tour boats with no character. Book early as may be full and therefore unavailable on your stay in Sydney! Highly recommended. Kids 7 (boy)and 9 (girl) and both loved it.

New Year’s Eve Cruise on Coral Trekker

Dear Nice and all at Sydney Harbour Tall Ships, We want to thank you all for the most fantastic evening on board The Coral Trekker. Please pass on our thanks to the Captain ( Andrew ? ) and all his crew who made the evening so special . The food and the odd glass of Champagne were just right for the occasion. The main event and the reason for being on board The Coral Trekker — The Sydney Harbour New Years Eve Fireworks – Were way beyond our expectations and made all the more spectacular by the Captains ability to position his ship into the perfect viewing location. In our view the only way to see and enjoy the Sydney Harbour New Years Eve firework display is on board “ The Coral Trekker”. Well done everybody and wishing you all a HAPPY NEW YEAR and a Successful 2023.

Educational Experience on Sydney Harbour

I would just like to thank you for such a wonderful, entertaining and educational Experience. Our family had the most fantastic time. The food was great, the crowd was happy and the guides were so professional and informative! It was really a day to remember!

Keep Up The Good Work!

We thoroughly enjoyed the afternoon and have not stopped talking about the whole experience! From the time we boarded and were welcomed, nothing was too much trouble. Congratulations you are doing a great job of showing Sydney and part of our history to tourists and the locals!

Excellent Historical Tour on Sydney Harbour

Thanks for a most enjoyable and informative cruise of our harbour and Goat Island last Saturday. Our guide’s knowledge and presentation of the historical aspects behind our early history was first class. I would recommend it others and especially visitors to our city. WELL DONE Crew!

Great Day Out on Sydney Harbour

I thought this trip was excellent with all the activities available, when it is over you want more! An awesome day on the harbour.

I can’t say enough for this activity it was FANTASTIC! As well as laser clay shooting they ran mast climbing where two people could climb the mast of the sip and hang out in the wind. I cannot recommend this enough people, get out there and take a sail with the boys! Also get involved in the activities as well, really makes the trip.

Awesome Sydney Harbour Cruise

Fulfilled my ambition of going on a tall sail ship, a great way to do it! This is a must if you like old sail ships and it’s a great way to experience the harbour. The activities on this cruise are awesome!

The Ship is a Beauty

Sydney Tall Ships provided a great harbour experience for the Google crew… Our expectations were exceeded for sure. The mast climb was thrilling… And the ship is a beauty!

Real Professionalism

I just wanted to let you know how pleased I am with Tall Ships Cruises. Nothing was too small or too big for your staff and they managed all our tedious requests with a smile and real professionalism. I am glad to have come across your organization. Microsoft is grateful to have chosen Tall Ships in catering for our event. Thank you.

Loved the Southern Swan

We absolutely loved our time aboard the Southern Swan. Not only did it perfectly fit our theme (pirates, of course), but the crew went out of their way to really make sure we had a great time. Having done a few harbour cruises as part of team building and corporate exercises, this is definitely one that sticks out the most in my mind. The Mast Climb was exhilarating and we’ll definitely keep it in mind for future events. Thanks again to everyone at Sydney Tall Ships and until we sail arrrrrrrgain me mateys!

A Big Hit with our CEO

From the moment we contacted the team at Tall Ships we found the service to be professional, courteous and nothing was ever a problem. All our needs were accommodated for and the afternoon was a big hit with our CEO, MD and members of our Senior management team. I would highly recommend Tall Ships to anyone thinking of this type of event.

Enjoyable Time on the Water

Our staff had a lovely time out on the ship and quite a number of them climbed the mast as well. Despite slightly cold weather, it was really enjoyable time on the water. Many thanks to you and your team for making the last part of our conference so special.

Perfect way to enjoy Sydney Harbour

We took a 2.5h sunset cruise on the Soren Larsen for a large group from work.Sydney harbour is a real natural wonder and seeing it from a beautiful period boat was spectacular. The ship itself was wonderful (solid oak, real sails and rigging etc.) and had actually made the voyage from Denmark to Sydney. Plus, you could climb up it :-)The staff were knowledgable, entertaining and couldn’t have done more to look after us. Personally I really enjoyed learning about the history of the boat and it’s voyage around the world to reach Sydney. We also enjoyed food and drinks on board which were pretty varied and very good.Highlights of the trip were mast climbing, cruising back from shark island using wind power only and watching the sun go down to be replaced by the Vivid lights.Overall this was a great team event for us and I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend it.

A very unique aspect of any pirate’s life aboard a tall ship while seeking out loot and eluding the law is helping set the sails, which is something that all pirates are encouraged to participate in.

Feel the power of the wind as it fills the sails and carries the ship over Sydney Harbour. It is like going back in time when the wind takes control and the sound of the engine stops, a feeling that pirates have shared throughout history as they stood on the deck of a tall ship with their eyes fixed on the horizon.

The unexpectedly big garden is lush and green, full of plants, flowers, palm and fig trees, tree ferns, and boasts stunning views of the port.

A rusty old wheelbarrow and an old scooter are just a couple of the unexpected artifacts (including picnic tables, eccentric statues, and miscellaneous objects) that give appeal to this living piece of creativity.

  • Where does the cruise depart from, and is it convenient for you to get there? (Most cruises depart from Circular Quay or Darling Harbour).
  • Do you want to eat while sailing? There are possibilities for family dinner cruises and even more options for lunch cruises.  Most cruises offer some form of food, but it’s also a good idea to pack some snacks.
  • Are you familiar with Sydney? If not, a commentary-enhanced cruise will provide you with a wealth of intriguing information.

Check the weather for Sydney before your trip. If possible, book your tickets close to the day to ensure favorable conditions or ensure that your reservation can be canceled if needed.

The first images have emerged of a cruise ship pulling into Sydney hours after a search and rescue effort which ended in tragedy.

A body was pulled from the waters off eastern Sydney about 10.30am after a passenger reportedly fell overboard from the P & O Pacific Adventure at 4am on Monday.

Passengers due to leave from White Bay Cruise Terminal were left stranded for some 7½ hours.

In a statement, police said a report will be prepared for the coroner after a body was found in the waters of La Perouse by officers attached to Police Marine Area Command.

Police will launch an investigation into the circumstances of the incident.

The ship’s delayed arrival brings an end to the tragic day after it was set to dock in Sydney Harbour at 6am, only for authorities to launch the search for the missing passenger.

In a statement, P & O Cruises Australia said Pacific Adventure’s voyage to White Bay in the afternoon had been delayed, with the ship expected to leave later tonight on a four-night voyage to Queensland.

“We thank guests for their care, understanding and patience on what’s been a distressing day for guests and crew,” a spokeswoman said

“Our thoughts are with the family of the guest at this difficult time.

Customers were left stranded and confused at White Bay Cruise Terminal on Monday.

At noon, cruisers were given the option to retrieve checked baggage and had shuttle buses ready to ferry them back to Darling Harbour.

In a text to travellers, P & O Cruises Australia said Pacific Adventure was slated for a 2.30pm docking at White Bay.

The company stated the check-in for the cruise had been delayed by some 7½ hours as a result of the search and rescue operation.

“All guests will need to be on-board by 10.30pm,” the text states.

“Dinner and the on-board entertainment program will be extended and we do not expect the later departure to impact the itinerary.”

Earlier, NSW Police said they were leading the search following a reports a person was in the water.

Desperate search underway for a cruise ship passenger feared to have fallen overboard

“Just after 4am today emergency services received reports a person had gone overboard off a ship 10 nautical miles off Sydney Heads,” a NSW Police spokesman said.

“NSW Police Marine Area Command have deployed a number of resources to search for the person and are leading the co-ordination of the water search.”

A Toll Ambulance Rescue Helicopter has also been combing a large body of water off Sydney Heads.

A statement from P & O Cruises Australian said more than 2600 guests were on-board, and the ship has been onsite searching “with other nearby vessels deployed to the area by the Australian Maritime Safety Authority’s Joint Rescue Coordination Centre”.

A text was sent to travellers on Monday morning informing them of the delay, with boarding expected to commence about 2.30pm. Picture: NCA Newswire / Gaye Gerard

“The family of this guest is being cared for by our on-board team while every effort is being made to find them,” it read.

“Pacific Adventure’s arrival into White Bay Terminal this morning has been delayed while the search continues.”

One passenger told radio station 2GB they had been woken up with a “man overboard call”.

Another listener, Brad, who was on his way to the terminal to pick up passengers, told breakfast host Ben Fordham that passengers had told him not to rush, as the ship was “stopped outside the head and somebody’s gone overboard”.

Gagarin cup (khl) finals:  atlant moscow oblast vs. salavat yulaev ufa.

Much like the Elitserien Finals, we have a bit of an offense vs. defense match-up in this league Final.  While Ufa let their star top line of Alexander Radulov, Patrick Thoresen and Igor Grigorenko loose on the KHL's Western Conference, Mytischi played a more conservative style, relying on veterans such as former NHLers Jan Bulis, Oleg Petrov, and Jaroslav Obsut.  Just reaching the Finals is a testament to Atlant's disciplined style of play, as they had to knock off much more high profile teams from Yaroslavl and St. Petersburg to do so.  But while they did finish 8th in the league in points, they haven't seen the likes of Ufa, who finished 2nd.

This series will be a challenge for the underdog, because unlike some of the other KHL teams, Ufa's top players are generally younger and in their prime.  Only Proshkin amongst regular blueliners is over 30, with the work being shared by Kirill Koltsov (28), Andrei Kuteikin (26), Miroslav Blatak (28), Maxim Kondratiev (28) and Dmitri Kalinin (30).  Oleg Tverdovsky hasn't played a lot in the playoffs to date.  Up front, while led by a fairly young top line (24-27), Ufa does have a lot of veterans in support roles:  Vyacheslav Kozlov , Viktor Kozlov , Vladimir Antipov, Sergei Zinovyev and Petr Schastlivy are all over 30.  In fact, the names of all their forwards are familiar to international and NHL fans:  Robert Nilsson , Alexander Svitov, Oleg Saprykin and Jakub Klepis round out the group, all former NHL players.

For Atlant, their veteran roster, with only one of their top six D under the age of 30 (and no top forwards under 30, either), this might be their one shot at a championship.  The team has never won either a Russian Superleague title or the Gagarin Cup, and for players like former NHLer Oleg Petrov, this is probably the last shot at the KHL's top prize.  The team got three extra days rest by winning their Conference Final in six games, and they probably needed to use it.  Atlant does have younger regulars on their roster, but they generally only play a few shifts per game, if that.

The low event style of game for Atlant probably suits them well, but I don't know how they can manage to keep up against Ufa's speed, skill, and depth.  There is no advantage to be seen in goal, with Erik Ersberg and Konstantin Barulin posting almost identical numbers, and even in terms of recent playoff experience Ufa has them beat.  Luckily for Atlant, Ufa isn't that far away from the Moscow region, so travel shouldn't play a major role.

I'm predicting that Ufa, winners of the last Superleague title back in 2008, will become the second team to win the Gagarin Cup, and will prevail in five games.  They have a seriously well built team that would honestly compete in the NHL.  They represent the potential of the league, while Atlant represents closer to the reality, as a team full of players who played themselves out of the NHL.

  • Atlant @ Ufa, Friday Apr 8 (3:00 PM CET/10:00 PM EST)
  • Atlant @ Ufa, Sunday Apr 10 (1:00 PM CET/8:00 AM EST)
  • Ufa @ Atlant, Tuesday Apr 12 (5:30 PM CET/12:30 PM EST)
  • Ufa @ Atlant, Thursday Apr 14 (5:30 PM CET/12:30 PM EST)

Games 5-7 are as yet unscheduled, but every second day is the KHL standard, so expect Game 5 to be on Saturday, like an early start.

Savvino-storozhevsky monastery and museum.

Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery and Museum

Zvenigorod's most famous sight is the Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery, which was founded in 1398 by the monk Savva from the Troitse-Sergieva Lavra, at the invitation and with the support of Prince Yury Dmitrievich of Zvenigorod. Savva was later canonised as St Sabbas (Savva) of Storozhev. The monastery late flourished under the reign of Tsar Alexis, who chose the monastery as his family church and often went on pilgrimage there and made lots of donations to it. Most of the monastery’s buildings date from this time. The monastery is heavily fortified with thick walls and six towers, the most impressive of which is the Krasny Tower which also serves as the eastern entrance. The monastery was closed in 1918 and only reopened in 1995. In 1998 Patriarch Alexius II took part in a service to return the relics of St Sabbas to the monastery. Today the monastery has the status of a stauropegic monastery, which is second in status to a lavra. In addition to being a working monastery, it also holds the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum.

Belfry and Neighbouring Churches

sydney harbour cruise family

Located near the main entrance is the monastery's belfry which is perhaps the calling card of the monastery due to its uniqueness. It was built in the 1650s and the St Sergius of Radonezh’s Church was opened on the middle tier in the mid-17th century, although it was originally dedicated to the Trinity. The belfry's 35-tonne Great Bladgovestny Bell fell in 1941 and was only restored and returned in 2003. Attached to the belfry is a large refectory and the Transfiguration Church, both of which were built on the orders of Tsar Alexis in the 1650s.

sydney harbour cruise family

To the left of the belfry is another, smaller, refectory which is attached to the Trinity Gate-Church, which was also constructed in the 1650s on the orders of Tsar Alexis who made it his own family church. The church is elaborately decorated with colourful trims and underneath the archway is a beautiful 19th century fresco.

Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral

sydney harbour cruise family

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is the oldest building in the monastery and among the oldest buildings in the Moscow Region. It was built between 1404 and 1405 during the lifetime of St Sabbas and using the funds of Prince Yury of Zvenigorod. The white-stone cathedral is a standard four-pillar design with a single golden dome. After the death of St Sabbas he was interred in the cathedral and a new altar dedicated to him was added.

sydney harbour cruise family

Under the reign of Tsar Alexis the cathedral was decorated with frescoes by Stepan Ryazanets, some of which remain today. Tsar Alexis also presented the cathedral with a five-tier iconostasis, the top row of icons have been preserved.

Tsaritsa's Chambers

sydney harbour cruise family

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is located between the Tsaritsa's Chambers of the left and the Palace of Tsar Alexis on the right. The Tsaritsa's Chambers were built in the mid-17th century for the wife of Tsar Alexey - Tsaritsa Maria Ilinichna Miloskavskaya. The design of the building is influenced by the ancient Russian architectural style. Is prettier than the Tsar's chambers opposite, being red in colour with elaborately decorated window frames and entrance.

sydney harbour cruise family

At present the Tsaritsa's Chambers houses the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum. Among its displays is an accurate recreation of the interior of a noble lady's chambers including furniture, decorations and a decorated tiled oven, and an exhibition on the history of Zvenigorod and the monastery.

Palace of Tsar Alexis

sydney harbour cruise family

The Palace of Tsar Alexis was built in the 1650s and is now one of the best surviving examples of non-religious architecture of that era. It was built especially for Tsar Alexis who often visited the monastery on religious pilgrimages. Its most striking feature is its pretty row of nine chimney spouts which resemble towers.
