RCA Placeholder Best Small Cities

Good things come in small packages, and nowhere is that more evident than in these 10 dynamic, reader-favorite cities. Whether you're on the lookout for a cutting-edge arts scene, inventive new restaurants, or eye-catching architecture, you're bound to find the next big new thing in travel.

An overview of Sedona.

Stunning Sedona is a must for the traveler seeking photos-won’t-do-it-justice wilderness. By day, explore its distinct red-rock monoliths, pine forests, and canyons for extraordinary views, or head into town to check out the art galleries. On clear nights, take the sky’s mind-boggling stretch of stars and stay in adobe cottages at the Enchantment Resort , a former private ranch turned luxury resort and spa. As an added bonus, Sedona is about a two-hour drive from the Grand Canyon—casual day trip to the country’s most spectacular natural wonder, anyone?

Picking crabs at the Annapolis Rotary Club's annual crab feast

9. Annapolis

Everyone’s a sailor in picturesque Annapolis, a charming town with brick-lined streets and structures that date back centuries—and, of course, the US Naval Academy. Even if you aren’t a fresh-faced recruit in bright whites, you can still tour the academy’s excellent museum and model gallery or simply take a leisurely stroll through its Beaux Arts campus. Given its location on the Chesapeake Bay , it should come as no surprise that Annapolis is a wonderland for seafood lovers as well—a visit to O’Learys Seafood Restaurant for crab cakes is an essential part of any visit.

A view of a beach.

8. Pensacola

Florida certainly has no shortage of beautiful beaches, but few places have the blindingly white sand and Caribbean-blue waters you’ll find in and around this town. Head to the nearby barrier islands for the best (and least crowded) stretches of sand: Pensacola Beach on Santa Rosa Island is often cited as the crown jewel of the Gulf Islands National Seashore, complete with dolphin-rich waters and sand so soft you’d swear you were walking on baby powder. Back on the mainland, spend an afternoon walking through the Chappie James Museum—a must-visit site that honors Daniel “Chappie” James Jr., a Tuskegee Airman who became the first African American to become a four-star general in any branch of the military.

A look at a bay.

7. St. Augustine

History lovers often flock to Savannah and Charleston to marvel at old buildings and ancient trees, but those cities are practically babies compared to St. Augustine. Founded in 1565, this Spanish-influenced city shines with its colonial architecture and old brick streets—not to mention historic treasures like Flagler College and the imposing Castillo de San Marcos—but the drinking and dining scenes here are totally modern. Be sure to grab some sunset cocktails at The Reef (preferably after surfing at Vilano Beach.)

After a pandemic that found many of us escaping to the great outdoors, readers continue to be drawn to Aspen. It’s home to some of the best ski slopes in the US—and some of the best resorts, too. The Little Nell is a popular choice for ski-in-ski-out; you can also stay at The St. Regis Aspen Resort , only a three-minute walk from the base of Aspen Mountain. If you’re more about the “après” than the “ski,” head to Meat and Cheese for the best charcuterie in town, or make a reservation at Matsuhisa Aspen , where chef Nobu Matsuhisa fuses Japanese cuisine and Peruvian ingredients. And if you've discounted the city as a summer destination, don’t: there's plenty to do here when it warms up, like hiking the Grottos Trail just east of town, or checking out the revolving contemporary art collection at the Aspen Art Museum .

5. Savannah, Georgia

Mossy, moody Savannah has no shortage of 'grammable views. Start with a walk along its cobblestoned historic district past horse-drawn carriages and ornate architecture, or find shade under live oak trees drooping with Spanish moss. Book in advance to nab a room at the Gastonian , a historic bed and breakfast just two blocks from 30-acre Forsyth Park . And for a fantastic dining experience, go to The Grey , an elegantly reborn former Greyhound Bus depot, where James Beard Award–winning chef Mashama Bailey serves elevated takes on Southern classics, like foie gras and grits and tempura-fried catfish.

4. Greenville, South Carolina

Want to get in on a secret? Plan a trip to Greenville now and you might see it just on the cusp of stardom. The food lover’s town has a farm-to-table scene that continues to rise in the ranks (try Jianna for Italian and freshly shucked oysters, and Vault & Vator, the city's first speakeasy, for a strong, well-crafted cocktail), and its craft beer scene is seeing a similar explosion. Paired with its dynamic urban spaces are abundant natural resources, including 32-acre Falls Park, which runs through the middle of town, and the Swamp Rabbit bike trail—now at a whopping 22 miles and counting.

Alexandria VA

3. Alexandria, Virginia

Washingtonians are all in on the secret, but it’s no surprise the rest of the world is catching up: Alexandria, Virginia, the charming, historic city just across the Potomac River from our nation's capital , draws travelers and would-be residents alike. Most folks start to imagine moving there immediately after setting foot in Old Town, once they’ve strolled the red-brick sidewalks, clocking street after street of perfectly preserved rowhouses from the 18th and 19th centuries. When you visit, scope out King Street, packed with boutiques, restaurants, and specialty shops; then land at the waterfront, where you can watch the boats bobbing on the water before touring the Torpedo Factory Art Center, a collective of galleries and artists’ studios. End the day at Gadsby’s Tavern, where some of our founding fathers used to drink—don’t mind the actors in colonial garb.

2. Santa Fe

Santa Fe acts as both New Mexico’s political and creative capital: Wander its wide streets, flanked by adobe houses, and you’ll begin to see why artists like Georgia O'Keeffe were so inspired by this eclectic, historic town. ( Traveler readers also can't stay away—Santa Fe has long been a regular on this list.) The city’s many art institutions, 250-plus galleries (notably SITE Santa Fe, in the Railyard, an emerging contemporary arts hub), and Spanish colonial churches keep culture fiends busy. If the fantastical is more your thing, Meow Wolf’s House of Eternal Return is an explorable art experience with more than 70 rooms of immersive art. To recharge after an active day of museum-hopping, we recommend ordering 505 Manhattans at Radish & Rye, whose 75 bourbons and whiskeys are an antidote to tequila overload.

1. Charleston, South Carolina

Charleston may be a small town, but this city punches well above its weight. When you consider everything it has to offer—history, culture, food, charm—it’s no wonder the so-called Holy City has repeatedly topped our list of the best small cities in the US. While its robust F&B scene , which includes a steady annual circuit of nationally recognized food and culture festivals, continues to be a draw, visitors are rarely prepared for the city's good looks. Stately homes, cobblestone streets, waterfront views, and an abundance of flowering window boxes only add to its welcoming vibe. Find a seat among its many outdoor terraces for a drink and some fresh oysters (we recommend hitting the Ordinary ), and try to resist the urge to up and move here.

RCA Placeholder Best Big Cities

Sure, you’ll find some familiar names on this list of the best big cities in the US, but go beyond what you might expect and you’ll find some surprising gems that are always a good idea for a reason.

Miami Beach and hotels.

With an abundance of dreamy beaches, Art Deco architecture, and incredible Cuban food, Miami was once again voted one of the best cities in the US this year. And while some of its beloved clichés (think expensive cars and neon bikinis) can still be found, the Magic City is so much more than a party destination. Art lovers are spoiled for choice when it comes to museums ( Pérez Art Museum Miami is a stand-out), while travelers seeking chic cafes and vinyl shops will feel right at home in the Wynwood Arts District .

9. Washington, D.C.

Washington, D.C. may have finally shed its buttoned-up reputation. Yes, we're still riding the high from the 2016 opening of the National Museum of African-American History and Culture , designed by world-renowned British-Ghanian architect David Adjaye. But then came the smartly revitalized Wharf, with its can't-miss waterfront views, and the arrival of hotel Eaton , which prioritizes activism instead of pillow mints—not to mention the city’s stylish Airbnbs. Suddenly, we can't seem to get enough of the place. Something's brewing in D.C., and it's not just the craft beer.

Country Music bars on Broadway Nashville

8. Nashville

A southern city with a small-town feel, you might find that a weekend isn’t enough to get all you can out of Nashville . Music City is known for its legendary honky tonks on Lower Broadway, but be sure to take time away from the buzz of the strip to explore the city’s shops and restaurants . You’ve likely heard of Prince’s Hot Chicken Shack , but also stop into Hatch Show Print , which has been creating show posters for Nashville’s biggest venues for more than 140 years, to check out their vintage letterpress machinery and take home a piece of Nashville history.

7. New York City

New York City buzzes as though perpetually caffeinated (and most of its residents probably are)—packed with people moving, creating, and making the most of every block. After a requisite visit to a few world-class museums (you can never take enough trips to the Met or the Guggenheim ), make like a local by tucking into soup dumplings in Chinatown , pizza in Greenwich Village, and steak frites in Soho, and walking it all off on the High Line ; or picnic in Bryant Park. Of course, there are four boroughs beyond Manhattan, and they deserve love, too; stroll over the Brooklyn Bridge for a drink at 1 Hotel Brooklyn Bridge , or venture out to Long Island City for a day at MoMa PS1 . In this town for all seasons, there's no wrong itinerary.

For one of the oldest cities in the US, Boston sure has aged with style. To get a quick refresher on our nation’s history, walk the Freedom Trail , a 2.5-mile route along a string of historic sites that takes you through the country’s founding. Other activities worth adding to your itinerary include slurping up oysters at Neptune , visiting the eclectic salon-style art display at the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum , and catching a ball game at Fenway Park . Just be sure to learn the words to “Sweet Caroline” before you go.

5. San Francisco

While San Francisco is on the small side for a major city, at just 49 square miles, it packs a punch. Yes, there’s Alcatraz and the famed Golden Gate Bridge , but you could also spend a whole day wandering through the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art or discovering street art in the character-filled Mission District. Treat yourself to some pampering at one of the city’s fantastic spas , or head north and take in the majesty of the redwoods in Muir Woods . Add in some of the best restaurants and bars in the world and a hotel scene that truly has something for everyone, and you’ll likely find that one visit to the city by the bay just isn’t enough.

4. New Orleans

It's easy to experience New Orleans through its most popular attractions: Mardi Gras and Bourbon Street, Cafe du Monde (which is great, don't get us wrong), and Preservation Hall jazz (also fantastic). But there's so much more to this soulful city. Its Creole, Cajun, and French roots inform everything from the music on Frenchman Street to the food and cocktails in the French Quarter over to the Bywater. It's also worth exploring the revitalized Warehouse District, home to the city's Ace Hotel , where you could easily stumble on half a dozen excellent galleries all within a few blocks' radius, or spend a whole day in contemplation at the National WWII Museum .

Overlooking Milwaukee Skyline

3. Milwaukee

So much more than just a day trip from Chicago , Milwaukee has many (if not all) of the same qualities that make other cities on this list buzz—and then some. Located on the shores of Lake Michigan, the city’s surprisingly eco-diverse location makes it a hotbed of locavore cuisine. A spate of award-winning restaurants have helped Milwaukee shed its beer-and-cheer reputation, though you can still get your fill of both between fine dinners. The dedicated revitalization of neighborhoods such as the historic Third Ward and Lincoln Village has also kept visitors busy with specialty shops, galleries, and more creative businesses.

2. San Diego

Several years ago, travelers headed to San Diego might have wondered what they would do in the city, besides hitting the beaches . No longer. With a recent string of hot hotel openings (like the Guild and the Carté) and a legit food scene that offers up some of the best Mexican dishes and seafood platters you'll ever taste, San Diego has officially stepped out from the shadow of its big sister to the north, earning world-class destination status that goes well beyond the waves. Come for the sunshine, sure; but stay for everything else.

1. Chicago, Illinois

It's no wonder Chicago is topping this list yet again. A world-class destination known for its impressive architecture, first-rate museums, brilliant chefs, and massive brewing scene, it’ll take several repeat visits to get through your list of must-dos. Most people start downtown—from the Magnificent Mile to the ritzy Gold Coast to funky Old Town—but there are 77 neighborhoods to explore, where you'll find cutting-edge restaurants , chilled-out corner bars , and, no matter where you go, some of the most pleasant people you'll find anywhere.

This is a city where you can eat $2 tacos on one corner and a Michelin-starred meal on the next. It has some of the sleekest modern homes in America, a movie theater shaped like a Chinese palace, and a concert hall designed by Frank Gehry.

Go rollerblading in Venice Beach, hike in Runyon Canyon, or practice Pilates at one of the dozens of high-end studios all around town. Los Angeles is a playground for the rich, the famous, and literally everyone else, but despite all of this, there are still plenty of free things to do and an endless supply of people-watching opportunities.

Chicago skyline at night

One of the largest cities in America, Chicago can often be overlooked for the flashier, glitzier cities like New York or Los Angeles . But this midwestern capital packs a punch all on its own, from trendy restaurants and live music to museums, glamorous hotels, and lakefront living.

The Windy City will, quite literally, blow you away. High-rise skyscrapers on the shores of Lake Michigan make for some robust gusts of wind throughout the year. But figuratively speaking, your mind will be blown in Chicago, from the world-renowned Art Institute to the sky-high Willis Tower.

Dining is dizzying in Chicago, whether it is down-home hot dogs or five-star cuts of steak. Festivals are rocking year-round in Chicago, from blues music to the world-famous Market Days. And, of course, let's not forget about the stunning hotels and landmarks that line the Magnificent Mile.

Barcelona, Spain

Beaches, buildings, and boats. That's what Barcelona is all about. From the stunning Mediterranean beaches to the architectural marvels of Antoni Gaudi to the yacht culture, Barcelona lives and breathes by the sea. Add to that fantastic gastronomy, art, history, and hotels and it's easy to see why Barcelona is one of the best cities in the world to visit.

Did you know that Barcelona's history dates back more than 2,000 years? That means you'll find Roman-style architecture alongside Gothic structures and Renaissance cathedrals, all the way up to the world-famous architecture designed by Antoni Gaudi. In fact, Gaudi's Sagrada Familia is one of the most visited tourist attractions in Barcelona .

Barcelona is one of the main cities of Spain's Catalonia region and, as such, is the capital of Catalan cuisine. But you can find all of Spain's regional delicacies here, from Basque and Galician to Andalusian and beyond.

Aerial view of Abu Dhabi

Abu Dhabi is the counterpart to the towering skyscrapers and glitzy lifestyle of Dubai. Sure, it has its own Louvre, but the focus in Abu Dhabi is to embrace the local lifestyle and culture and put a spotlight on the unique heritage of the United Arab Emirates.

Abu Dhabi is where Islamic architecture reigns supreme, from the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque to the museum Qasr Al Hosn. Of course, the 21st century comes through loud and clear in Abu Dhabi architecture, as well, in the forms of Etihad Towers and the Yai Viceroy, among others.

Much like Dubai, no expense is spared in Abu Dhabi. Just look at the luxury hotels on Saadiyat Island or the Formula One track at the Yai Marina Circuit. There is even a Ferrari World and a Warner Bros World for the kids. But nature is also a big part of life in Abu Dhabi, from the Mangrove National Park to the gorgeous beaches on Hudayriat Island.

Canal in Amsterdam, Netherlands

Amsterdam is one of the most easily accessible cities in the world, with flights from most of the major gateways in North America and Europe. But far beyond easy access, it is what Amsterdam has to offer travelers that makes it one of the best cities in the world to visit.

Amsterdam is simply stunning, with a maze of canals, bike-friendly streets, and cobblestone alleys, world-renowned museums, historic architecture, shops, cafés, and great restaurants.

Amsterdam is color. Come spring, the city explodes with every shade of the rainbow from the many flower stalls selling the iconic bouquets of Dutch tulips. Even the once-dreary industrial shipping and dock areas have transformed into boutique shops, hotels, and galleries.

While spring is one of the best times to visit Amsterdam, the festive nature of the city makes visiting in the winter months a unique and fun experience, too, not to mention the cheaper airfare and lodging rates.

And then there is Amsterdam's cultural scene. The museums in this city are next level, from The Van Gogh Museum to the iconic Rijksmuseum, the Stedelijk Museum, and more. Locals and visitors alike get by in Amsterdam on two wheels, or on the water, whether it's a bike path or a canal cruise.

Madrid, Spain

Spain has so many fantastic cities to explore, but none is quite as compelling as the capital, Madrid. A combination of history and culture, art and design, cuisine and entertainment, Madrid is the embodiment of everything people love about a fantastic European city.

Centuries of history came together to make the Madrid we know today. From its royal roots to the Moorish influence, the years of the revolution, and the cosmopolitan and technological advances of the 21st century, the layers of Madrid are varied and deep.

It's no wonder this is a city that inspired the great works of Goya and Picasso, Balenciaga, Almodovar, and beyond. Visit the world-renowned Museo del Prado or marvel at the fantastic Baroque and Belle Epoque architecture all over the city.

When it comes to hotels, dining, and entertainment, Madrid is beyond elegant, refined, and impeccably designed. Wander through the centuries down its historic streets and step right into the modern-day restaurants and cafés for an experience that withstands the test of time.

Panorama of Sydney harbour and bridge, New South Wales, Australia

With its spectacular harborside perch, stunning beaches , and cosmopolitan (yet decidedly laid-back) flair, Sydney is truly one of the greatest cities in the world. Residents and visitors alike take pleasure as much in a fine meal as they do in a beachfront hike.

Locals here live and die by the water, whether it's a sunset cruise or a casual waterfront lunch. Culture and design are excellent here. Just look at the iconic Sydney Opera House and the Sydney Harbour Bridge. Sydney is about electricity and excitement, but also about being best equipped to ride the perfect wave.

From the shores of Bondi Beach to the glamor of George Street, you can fit in just about anywhere in Sydney. It's also one of the jumping-off points from which to explore the tropical, beachy Gold Coast all the way up to Brisbane .

Colorful buildings in San Miguel de Allende

There's a reason that San Miguel de Allende is voted the best city in the world by top international travel magazines. It is a veritable outdoor museum, splashed with bright colors and veined with cobblestone streets.

Add to that some of the best boutique hotels in Mexico, fabulous restaurants, museums, outdoor entertainment, and so many things to see and do in the surrounding region , that it will be difficult to deny San Miguel de Allende's inherent beauty and charm.

At the center of the city is the glimmering pink Parroquia de San Miguel Arcángel — the Neo-Gothic church that serves as a beacon at the center of the city. This is the heart of the action, where you'll find a wide plaza with small shops, and streets that branch off in every direction flanked with cafés, boutique stores, and small galleries.

San Miguel de Allende is an artist's paradise, saturated with gorgeous vistas, and spectacular architecture.

Sao Jorge Castle in Lisbon, Portugal

Lisbon is truly a masterpiece — and a hidden one, at that. One of the most under-the-radar Western European capitals, Lisbon is laid out like a painting, complete with red-tiled roofs, brightly colored waterfront buildings, cable cars, and medieval architecture.

But Lisbon is very much a 21st-century city, as well, with trendy cafés and restaurants, boutique hotels, entertainment, and impressive museums like the National Tile Museum. Built on seven hillsides, Lisbon overlooks the cityscape, as well as the Rio Tejo where it feeds out to the Atlantic Ocean. Picture cobblestone streets, ancient structures, and the peaks of cathedrals snooping out over the clouds.

One of the most popular neighborhoods, the Bairro Alto, is where the heart of Lisbon pulses. We're talking about cozy restaurants, boutiques, hot spots, and waterfront promenades.

Lisbon calls as much to the appreciators of European antiquities as it does to the fierce-hearted night owls and the effervescent youth. It is a city for all ages and one that has managed to bubble beneath the surface for so long.

The Hofburg Palace in Vienna at night

If you like Paris, you'll love Vienna. Though the cities are decidedly different, their elegance, history, glamor, and charm are remarkably simpatico. They both live with remnants of an opulent past, decadent architecture, bejeweled fabrics, and imperial lavishness. Today Vienna is known for its art, coffeehouses, dining, and design.

For centuries, Vienna was the seat of the Habsburg monarchy. Six hundred years of imperial richness was set at the heart of Hofburg Palace . Today the architecture of Vienna still tells the story of its opulent past. Remnants of the past centuries are still present today, from the Spanish Riding School to the Vienna Boys' Choir.

Still, Vienna is a city that has embraced the 21st century. Boutique hotels, fine dining, live music, outdoor festivals, and more all tell the story of a creative and energetic youthful generation that is setting the nation firmly in the present.

Vienna is the city to appreciate the Old Masters of art and walk in the footsteps of Beethoven and Mahler, all the while sampling cutting-edge gastronomy and dancing the night away until the sun comes up.

The World’s 10 Best Cities of 2024

Resonance’s annual ranking takes into account factors that include a city’s gdp per capita, cultural programming, airport connectivity, even instagram hashtags..

  • Copy Link copied

Dumbo, Brooklyn, New York

What makes a city the greatest in the world? For more than 15 years, Resonance—a consultancy group in real estate, tourism, and economic development—has taken a holistic approach to a popular “best-of” list.

Rather than just rely on data around, say, a place’s landmarks or how easy it is to bike there , Resonance uses a combination of core statistics (like GDP and number of Fortune Global 500 corporate headquarters) and qualitative evaluations by both locals and visitors (from online channels like Instagram and TripAdvisor) to paint a more comprehensive picture of a world’s best city.

The organization’s new 2024 World’s Best Cities list has just been released with many familiar destinations at the top. The cities on this year’s list—all with metropolitan populations of more than 1 million—have moved toward a postpandemic reality in their own ways: One rolled out 464 miles of bikeways (San Francisco), while another is imagining a place in which residents can access 80 percent of their daily needs and destinations in less than 30 minutes’ time by foot or bike ride (Dubai).

How the best city rankings work

“This year, we’ve regrouped our previous six categories [Place, People, Programming, Product, Prosperity, and Promotion] into three larger pillars that we utilize in our work with clients—Livability, Lovability, and Prosperity—to define each city’s relative Place Power Score,” Resonance Consultancy president Chris Fair said in the 2024 report. ”Our rankings are still built from 24 subcategories that we analyze to measure the performance of each city. . . . The criteria we select to rank these cities are limited to those that have historically shown positive correlations with attracting employment, investment and/or visitors.”

Livability: This category measures the quality of a place’s environment, both natural and built. Subcategories include walkability (the city’s walkability score on Walk Score), airport connectivity (the number of direct destinations served by the city’s airports), and higher education (the QS Rankings score of the top local university).

Lovability: The lovability pillar considers the vibrancy and quality of a city, as well as how much it inspires residents, businesses, and visitors to promote it. This includes culture (number of quality performing arts and cultural experiences recommended by locals and visitors according to Tripadvisor.com), shopping (number of quality shopping experiences recommended by locals and visitors according to Tripadvisor.com), and number of Instagram hashtags.

Prosperity: The prosperity pillar measures the strength of a city’s human capital. Subcategories include educational attainment (percentage of the population with a bachelor’s degree or higher), Fortune Global 500 companies (number of Fortune Global 500 corporate headquarters), convention center size (size of the largest convention center in a city), and poverty rate (percentage of the population living below the national poverty line).

Here’s how the world’s best cities ranked in the 2024 report, released October 3, 2023:

1. London, England

Rankings: Livability (1), Lovability (1), Prosperity (3)

“London is rarely quiet these days,” says Resonance. Most of the Tube’s lines are running at its pre-COVID cadence, with added metro stops like the October 2022-opened Bond Street’s Elizabeth station. Thanks to policies that give the U.K. the lowest corporate tax rate among G7 countries, Resonance says London’s resilience has been “buoyed by a sinking currency that has attracted investment and, of course, previously priced-out tourists. And new residents . . . who can now afford to check off a big item on the multi-millionaire bucket list: property in the planet’s most coveted city.”

Why we love it: London’s main sights might date back millennia, but the capital’s shops, bars, hotels, and restaurants continue to evolve on an almost weekly basis. Whether you’re outdoorsy, hungry, or bringing a family in tow, there’s a distinct London neighborhood to investigate —and it will likely look different from your last visit. For new hotel options , there’s everything from the much-anticipated Raffles London at the OWO to the sustainability-meets-luxury inspired 1 Hotel Mayfair .

2. Paris, France

Rankings: Lovability (2), Livability (6), Prosperity (12)

“The city remains the most visited on the planet, with 44 million visitors last year,” Resonance says. “Good thing Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport used the past three years of lower volume to invest €250 million into a renovation of Terminal 1. Reopened this year, it now has a colossal junction building and a central lobby full of the latest tech to improve the traveler experience. Rail access and infrastructure are also unprecedented. A seven-hour direct Berlin-to- Paris TGV line launches next year, with more ambitious directs like the Venice-to-Paris Midnight Trains coming in 2025. No matter how they arrive, what Paris visitors new and returning will find is a city that has codified pedestrianism and alfresco living.”

Why we love it: As Paris gears up for the 2024 Olympics, it’s only getting better. Improved infrastructure, a commitment to pedestrians, and luxurious hotels add to a city we love for its world-class art, shopping, and global cuisine.

3. New York City, United States

The pandemic exodus led some to believe New York City’s reign was over, but this U.S. city’s number three ranking—the same as last year—proves that it’s not going anywhere. Resonance says tourism numbers for the city are skyrocketing from 33 million visitors in 2021 (which was less than half of 2019’s numbers) to a projected 61 million in 2023. NYC is welcoming back visitors in style with major upgrades to its international gateways: LaGuardia Airport, Newark Liberty International Airport, and John F. Kennedy International Airport all have new terminals, “with the new Terminal B at LaGuardia alone boasting 35 gates” and looking fine . Ritz-Carlton New York, NoMad, and Thompson in Midtown are only a few of the impressive hotels ready to host incoming visitors—check out AFAR’s review of the $3,200-a-night Aman .

Why we love it: “The City” (as locals call it) consistently ranks for its culture; this year celebrates the 50th anniversary of hip hop music’s founding and the 100-year anniversary of the Museum of the City of New York. New sights and landmarks are constantly being added to classics like the Empire State Building, such as the viewpoints from Summit One Vanderbilt’s all-glass exterior elevators.

4. Tokyo, Japan

Rankings: Livability (3), Lovability (4), Prosperity (11)

“The Japanese government remains steadfast, keeping its target of 60 million visitors and $136 billion in tourism revenue by 2030. It’s not as delusional as it sounds: the country enjoyed record tourism for seven straight years and can now accommodate even more, with the expansion of the international terminal at Haneda, the city’s main airport (ranked #38 globally), and a planned 18-minute rail link from arrivals to downtown by 2031,” says Resonance. There’s much ado around Japan’s recent reopening to international travelers —and as the world’s best city for shopping, wallets will likely open on their visit to spots like the newly renovated Miyashita Park.

Why we love it: Ranked number in the survey’s restaurants subcategory, Tokyo is home to some life-changing ramen , making it a destination worth planning an entire trip around food. And if most of your travel budget goes to eating, don’t worry. There are plenty of affordable hotels in Tokyo to book.

Tree structures at Gardens by the Bay in Singapore

5. Singapore

Rankings: Prosperity (2), Lovability (14), Livability (17)

Shooting up from its number nine ranking on the 2023 World’s Best Cities list, Singapore has become one of the continent’s most captivating cities, according to Resonance. And it’s not just iconic views from the rooftop infinity pool of Marina Bay Sands that are grabbing people’s attention. “A new waterfront district is being explored just south of the airport, called the Great Southern Waterfront, which is slated to build 9,000 housing units along Singapore’s southern coast,” the report says. “Locals are also buzzing about the forthcoming NS Square, a future outdoor multipurpose venue in the Downtown Core area of Marina Bay that will replace the popular Marina Bay floating platform.”

Why we love it: The Little Red Dot, as the city-state is affectionately called, is highlighted for biking and shopping; it earns top spots in our eyes (and stomachs) for its famous hawker stall street food, its garden-like airport terminal , and the reopened Raffles Singapore hotel, which has been welcoming travelers since 1887.

Man riding a camel and leading a camel in Dubai

6. Dubai, United Arab Emirates

Rankings: Prosperity (4), Lovability (5), Livability (35)

“Famed for outlandish developments like Palm Jumeirah, home to Atlantis, the Palm and the made-famous-by-Tom-Cruise Burj Khalifa—the tallest building in the world—the city has, over the years, made breaking world records a national pastime: tallest, longest, fastest, largest,” Resonance says. Moving forward, Dubai’s 2040 Urban Masterplan aims to make it feel smaller by developing a “20-minute city,” in which city residents can access 80 percent of their daily needs and destinations by either a 20-minute walk or bike ride.

Why we love it: Its Museum of the Future ; greater accessibility with more than 700 hotel options ; a new Michelin guide featuring 89 restaurants , including three with a Green star sustainability honor.

Plan your next trip with AFAR’s Guide to Dubai.

7. San Francisco, United States

Rankings: Prosperity (5), Livability (20), Lovability (28)

Despite San Francisco’s steep population decline and an office vacancy of about 30 percent, city leaders remain “undeterred,” says Resonance: The city is “rolling out the most daring bike and pedestrian infrastructure in America and the protected bike network now boasts 464 miles of bikeways, including 50 miles of new car-free/car-light streets in the past year alone.” Global talent continues to come, thanks to high salaries and the Bay Area, which Resonance says “remains the number one place for start-up innovation, powered by venture capital kept interested in the city’s famed ‘ecosystem’—for talent, for research and for universities.”

Why we love it: Besides being AFAR’s birthplace, there are endless things to do ( even for a local ). With plenty of vibrant neighborhoods to explore, it’s a no-brainer stop for those on the Pacific Coast Highway .

Plan your next trip with AFAR’s Guide to San Francisco.

8. Barcelona, Spain

Rankings: Lovability (7), Livability (10), Prosperity (48)

Why we love it: Barcelona is an almost ideal European city, one with great weather year round and “era-spanning neighborhoods that are destinations at all hours,” says Resonance. Add bike-friendliness to the list; according the World’s Best Cities report, travelers coming to the city will find more than 150 miles of new bike lanes, as well as “daring initiatives like Eixos Verds (Green Axis), a network of quieter roads that share space equally between cars, bikes and pedestrians, and are dotted with benches and community squares.”

Why we love it: This Spanish city is home to miles and miles of beaches , iconic parks, and Gaudí’s iconic architectural landmarks . Its activities aren’t just limited to the daytime—Barcelona ranks number three in the nightlife subcategory.

Plan your next trip with AFAR’s Guide to Barcelona.

People in a bike lane on bikes in Amsterdam

9. Amsterdam, Netherlands

Rankings: Livability (5), Lovability (22), Prosperity (24)

According to Resonance, an attitude of care for others and willingness for locals to do the work is reflected in the city’s Top 5 ranking in its Livability score. Just look at the approach Mayor Halsema’s administration took in accommodating unhoused migrants during the refugee crisis. Making its livability sustainable has led to several efforts on the tourism end: Over the summer, city council moved to ban cruise ships from the city center as part of its clean-air efforts . Resonance says “tours and programs focusing on the city’s enviable livability and Dutch history” are also encouraging tourists “from the city center and out to the #8-ranked shopping and #11-ranked museums that pepper the city.”

Why we love it: With nonstop flights available from most U.S. cities, Amsterdam’s easy accessibility—and beautiful canals and world-class museums—make it a popular stop for any trip to Europe. In addition to its top-notch cultural offerings, Amsterdam is also on the forefront of sustainable tourism. In 2018, one hospitality company started to repurpose Amsterdam’s out-of-use bridge houses into charming stand-alone hotel rooms , and by 2030, all gas and diesel cars will be banned from the city.

Plan your next trip with AFAR’s Guide to Amsterdam.

Seoul’s history can be found in places like Gyeongbokgung Palace.

10. Seoul, South Korea

Highlighted rankings: Prosperity (8), Livability (26), Lovability (31)

“In an astonishingly short span, South Korea’s capital has 180ed from war-ravaged city to high-tech hub,” says Resonance. “The city’s ascent is boosted by our eighth-lowest Poverty Rate ranking, sixth-most Global 500 firms located in town, and a growing start-up ecosystem waiting its turn to disrupt the incumbents. All that innovation is sated by the 176 Michelin-rated venues that have earned Seoul a #3 ranking in our Restaurants subcategory.”

Why we love it: The Korean wave has brought Seoul into the mainstream as traditions like Korean Banchan have gotten recognition. The food scene can be found in places like Gwangjang Market, “where you can eat everything from a soup of rice cakes and kimchi-tofu dumplings to squirmy live octopus (really),” says Resonance.

Revealed: The top 10 cities in America for 2024

These cities score high for livability, lovability and prosperity

NYC skyline

The job of ranking the best cities in the U.S. and around the world is a massive undertaking. Resonance —advisors in tourism, urban and economic development for countries, cities and communities—produces one of the most thorough and respected rankings each year due to its unique methodology that incorporates everything from stats to social media. This year, the rankings feature perception-based data for the first time, through a new partnership with market research and polling firm Ipsos. The results are in, and while the number one city may not surprise anyone, the remaining top ten—and top 100—cities reveal just which spots around the country where Americans aspire to live and the ones that live up to those expectations.

First, a bit about methodology: Resonance analyzes an eclectic mix of data that includes everything from the number of Fortune 500 companies, cost of living and ease of getting to the airport to the availability of outdoor recreation opportunities, number of nightlife experiences, volume of check-ins on Facebook and number of mentions on Instagram. On top of that, the survey by Ipsos polled 2,000 adults for their thoughts on where they would like to live one day, places they’d like to visit and cities they think have the best job opportunities. All of this info was synthesized to give cities with a population of 500,000 or more a Place Power Score based on Livability, Lovability and Prosperity

Now, to the good stuff. The best city in America for 2024 is, once again, New York City . NYC has come out on top every year since the inaugural ranking. The city is booming, with new shows, hotels and parks. Real estate may be at a record high, but tourism is on the upswing and there’s never a shortage of things to do in the city.

Following NYC on the list of the top 10 best cities in America are Chicago, Los Angeles, Miami, Las Vegas, San Francisco, Boston, D.C., Seattle and Houston. Nine more cities in California—San Diego, San Jose, Sacramento, Oxnard, Riverside, Fresno and Modesto—made the Top 100 list, the most of any state. To view the full list of the best cities in the U.S. and their Place Power Scores, visit BestCities.us .

Interested in more rankings? Resonance will release Asia’s Best Cities (a new ranking) on September 3, World’s Best Cities on October 22 and World’s Best Countries (another new ranking) on January 13, 2025.

The magazine’s results are based on data from readers who participated in a survey and ranked each characteristic by selecting excellent, above average, average, below average or poor. The final scores are averages of the participants' responses.

“This year’s awards reflect the ever-evolving landscape of travel, with new categories and new winners capturing the changing preferences of modern travelers," Travel + Leisure’s editor in chief Jacqui Gifford said in a press release. "We hope this list will inspire our audience to embrace the transformative power of travel.”

Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom

Where: orlando, florida.

Main Street, USA, here you come!

If anything encompasses the ethos of Disney World’s  Magic Kingdom , it’s the “It’s a Small World” ride. That same tune represents a certain kind of American dream: one of a land comprising many cultures, welcoming to all.  The Magic Kingdom certainly welcomes everyone into its dream world , where Mickey Mouse and Cinderella roam and whirling rides thrill. The whole scope of the American imagination is represented, where every day ends with fireworks and a parade. It’s a pixie-dusted retreat from reality that can’t be missed, no matter your age.

INSIDER TIP Make the most of your visit with Disney Genie+ on the My Disney Experience app, where you can see estimated wait times and have access to exclusive Lighting Lane Entrance bookings (i.e., no waiting in lines!).

The french quarter, where: new orleans, louisiana.

Like the confluence of cultures that created it, New Orleans’  French Quarter aesthetic is a vibrant collage of textures: cobblestone corridors, lush courtyard gardens, and storied wrought-iron balcony railings.  The city’s rich history and musical heritage are inextricably linked , where you can shop the vibrant French Market , stop in for beignets at Café Du Monde , or liven things up at a rousing jazz performance at Preservation Hall . A spirit of resilient jubilance pervades the French Quarter, making it an American icon you must experience.

INSIDER TIP Get a great view of the French Quarter for free by riding the Canal Street Ferry (a.k.a. Algiers Ferry) to historic Algiers Point. It leaves the terminal on Canal Street—next to the Aquarium of the Americas —every 30 minutes.

Recommended fodor’s video, times square, where: new york, new york.

If you want to be thrust headlong into the frantic heart of excess, consumerism, spectacle, and everything unabashedly American, look no further than  Times Square . You’ll join enthusiastic and ecstatic tourists from every corner of the world as you walk through the blaring ads and costumed characters. Snap pictures as necessary, but don’t make the mistake of skipping the M&M’s World to sweeten the experience. This roaring neon hub of humanity truly never sleeps, and it simply must be seen to be believed.

INSIDER TIP Despite the crowds, there are places to sit and relax. Between 42nd and 47th Streets, former traffic lanes on Broadway are now pedestrian-only areas.

Fenway Park

Where: boston, massachusetts.

The Boston Red Sox have played at  Fenway Park , the oldest Major League Baseball ballpark, since 1912. Baseball legends Babe Ruth, Ted Williams, and Carl Yastrzemski all stepped up to bat here. It’s both a vestige of an American golden age, preserved in all its old-fashioned glory and a hub for fans of a quintessentially American sport—and its rabidly supported team.

INSIDER TIP Didn’t manage to nab tickets in advance? Try your luck at Gate E on Lansdowne Street 90 minutes before the game, when a handful of tickets are sold. Or meander the street-fair-esque Jersey Street near the stadium for a taste of the Red Sox Nation spirit.

Mount Rushmore

Where: keystone, south dakota.

Not only is  Mount Rushmore  stunning in terms of its sheer scale, it’s also perhaps the boldest embodiment of American ideals in existence and is, without a doubt, one of the best places you must visit in the U.S. It acts as a shrine to democracy, chiseled in the same wild western lands that came to represent the pioneering American spirit. The sculpture features the faces of four iconoclastic U.S. Presidents—including Thomas Jefferson, George Washington, Theodore Roosevelt, and Abraham Lincoln—each representing the unification and progression of the country’s foundation.

INSIDER TIP Follow the Presidential Trail for excellent views of Mount Rushmore, or walk the Avenue of Flags, which represents each U.S. state, commonwealth, district, and territory, for a different perspective.

Taos Pueblo

Where: taos, new mexico.

These multistory, mud-and-straw adobes have sheltered Tiwa-speaking Native Americans for nearly 1,000 years and remain the largest collection of multistory Pueblo dwellings in the nation. Once believed to be the “Seven Cities of Gold” by the early Spanish explorers, the Taos Pueblo is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and appears frozen in time, where the legacy of the traditional Native American way of life endures.

INSIDER TIP Step inside the VISIT Taos Visitor Center for Taos Pueblo Art to purchase artisan goods made by the families of the Taos Pueblo, and be sure to try the popular fry bread, which is sold around every corner.

Pike Place Market

Where: seattle, washington.

When it opened in 1907, Pike Place Market was a riotous assembly where vendors hawked produce and haggled with hordes of customers. Today it is a food lover’s dream and the best representation of American humor and creativity, where —and throw them over the heads of unsuspecting market goers—alongside many restaurants, bakeries, coffee shops (including the flagship Starbucks), and more. Don’t miss the fresh (and inexpensive) blooms of the farmer’s market, as well as the more crafts-oriented corridors of the market.

INSIDER TIP Don’t miss one of Seattle’s weirder hidden gems, the Gum Wall on Post Alley, in Pike Place Market. Thousands of visitors have “left their mark” on the city by sticking their used chewing gum to the wall.

WHERE: California

Unending wildflowers, soaring  California  condors, sea otters reclining in kelp beds, ancient forests—it’s no wonder  Big Sur  is a storied retreat for artists and writers, and one of the top bucket list places to visit in the U.S. There’s nowhere else like it in America, where the undeveloped coastline stretches farther than anywhere else in the contiguous United States. Hike the high ridges for spectacular vistas, including the 875,000 acres of wilderness in the Los Padres National Forests , and make time to relax on the idyllic beach to spot whales and seals in the distant waters. Or enjoy it all from the car on coastal  Highway 1 as you pass over the photogenic Bixby Creek Bridge .

INSIDER TIP If you plan to camp, book every campground you plan to use, and far in advance—most reserve half their site for “first come, first served” on the day, making planning difficult.

The Grand Canyon

Where: arizona.

The  Grand Canyon  is an American icon in that it represents the expansive, larger-than-life ruggedness of the country.  Volcanic features and soaring sandstone canyon walls make for awesome vistas, as well as a welcoming venue for year-round adventure . On the floor of this 227-mile-long natural wonder, the wild Colorado River traces a swift southwestern course.

INSIDER TIP The best free activity in the canyon is watching the vibrant splashes of color on the canyon walls at sunset or sunrise, but it’s worth the ticket price to venture out to the West Canyon to stroll along the glass-floored walkway of the Grand Canyon Skywalk.

South Beach

Where: florida.

Miami’s  South Beach  stretches along the Atlantic like a sandy sculpture garden of bronzed, chiseled bods. Everyone’s on display here—especially at the people-watching mecca that is the Lincoln Road Mall —from the motionless models  sunbathing on the shore  to the impeccably styled patrons posing in café chairs. Cyclists breeze by under soaring palms that sway gently toward the turquoise water. And at night, the streets are a spectrum of glowing neon. It all makes for quite the aesthetically pleasing tableau of an iconic American beach.

INSIDER TIP Families should head to Mid- or North Beach—South Beach tends toward the PG-13 (and above).

Golden Gate Bridge

Where: san francsico, california.

If you stand still on the “international orange”-colored, 1.7-mile long, art deco suspension bridge connecting San Francisco and Marin County when it’s windy, you can feel it sway a bit. The majestic  Golden Gate Bridge  set the global standard for suspension-bridge design when it was built to withstand high winds and earthquakes. This bridge’s power is palpable as you take in the  San Francisco  skyline and bay islands from its edge. In afternoons and mornings, the red towers poke out from the mystical, thick fog below.

INSIDER TIP It takes about 45 minutes to an hour to cross the entire bridge, so plan your day accordingly.

Las Vegas Sign

Where: las vegas, nevada.

A trip to The Strip can’t end without a picture in front of this kitschy, 50s-style sign. The flashy, diamond-shaped testament to the  Vegas  spirit is an American icon in primary colors, welcoming all to the city’s hedonistic streets, fun and fast-paced casinos, chilled-out pools , and, of course, the impressive water ballet at the Fountains of Bellagio . There are 10 Best Celebrity Chef Restaurants on the Las Vegas Strip and the 10 Best Buffets in Las Vegas to meet all your food cravings. Expect to feel giddy when it comes into view: That’s when you know your adventure is about to start.

INSIDER TIP People will line up to take their picture front and center but just scoot to the right for an equally good picture from a unique angle.

Thomas Jefferson Memorial

Where: washington, d.c..

Washington, D.C . has its fair share of iconic American monuments, but if you’re only going to see one of them during a visit, head to the  Thomas Jefferson Memorial . Its stately domed marble roof and commanding columns are instantly recognizable, while its graceful steps overlooking the Potomac make for a lovely lunch or resting spot. As the author of the Declaration of Independence, our third president, and a visionary founding father, Jefferson and his memorial are icons of the American spirit. Go during D.C.’s cherry blossom season in the spring for an extra stunning view.

INSIDER TIP General parking is available on West Basin Drive, on Ohio Drive SW, and at the Tidal Basin parking lot along Maine Ave., SW. Handicap parking is available on Home Front Drive SW, accessed from southbound 17th St.

Millennium Park

Where: chicago, illinois.

This 25-acre park is the perfect icon for the truly American city of Chicago , where art, music, and nature come together in one urban space. Cool down at Crown Fountain as giant images of Chicagoans’ faces are broadcasted on the 50-foot-high water fountain, or gaze into the captivating polished steel façade of “The Bean” (officially named  Cloud Gate ) before making your way to the otherworldly Jay Pritzker Pavilion to witness any number of the can’t-miss concerts held within the manicured grounds. All in all, Millennium Park .

INSIDER TIP Take a free guided tour of the beautiful five-acre  Lurie Garden , an urban oasis designed to pay homage to Chicago’s transformation into a bold and powerful city.

Hollywood Sign

Where: los angeles, california.

Although the sign was originally used as an advertisement for a housing development back in 1923, over the years, the 50-foot, bold letters of the Hollywood Sign have become the unexpecting symbols of American ambition and glamour. Since the early 1900s, the sign has defined the city and it’s been featured in countless films and TV series from its perch on the Hollywood Hills.   The six-mile Brush Canyon trail puts you behind the sign for a great perspective of the city, but it’s still highly illegal to get too close to the sign.

INSIDER TIP Careful if you’re driving up from the residential streets; drivers tend to speed around the blind corners.

Grand Central Terminal

Enter  Grand Central Terminal  from its ornate, East 42nd Street, Roman-triumphal-arch-inspired façade, and you’ll pass under Corinthian columns and soaring arched windows to find an elegant clock for rushed commuters. Grand Central is one of the world’s largest, busiest, and most beautiful stations. Chandeliers glimmer in the waiting room, while in the cavernous main concourse, sleek marble walls support an arched, robin’s-egg-blue ceiling that twinkles with a fiber-optic map of the constellations.

INSIDER TIP Try out the secret “whispering gallery” by the famous  Grand Central Oyster Bar  downstairs. The acoustics of the arches can cause a whisper from across the entryway to sound like a shout.

Portland head light, where: portland, maine.

George Washington commissioned the  Portland Head Light  in 1790 to tower over the keeper’s quarters in Fort Williams Park and beckon ships to land. Also making it an American icon is Edward Hopper’s 1927 painting, Lighthouse Hill , which many might recognize. It’s a truly beautiful and classic lighthouse, with its smooth white stone topped by a black spire against the blazing red roof of the keeper’s quarters, all perched on the romantic cliffs of Maine.

INSIDER TIP Try a classic New England lobster roll from Bite Into Maine , the quaint food truck that parks here.

Grand Teton National Park

Where: wyoming.

The rugged, snowcapped peaks of the  Grand Tetons jut up daringly from the green fields below, with no foothills to soften the ascent. At the highest peak, this mountain range reaches 13,775 feet in elevation, with eight peaks also rising above 12,000 feet. Your best bet for spotting iconic American West creatures at this bucket list location is along the Willow Flats , where you’ll likely see elk, beavers, and bald eagles. This all-American range makes for an unforgettable and awe-inspiring landscape you don’t want to miss.

INSIDER TIP Learn the history of homesteading by visiting the 1890s barns and ranch buildings of Mormon Row or Menor’s Ferry.

Philadelphia City Hall

Where: philadelphia, pennsylvania.

It took nearly 30 years to construct this architecturally stunning municipal building. When Philadelphia City Hall opened in 1901, the 37-foot-tall bronze statue of William Penn on top made it the tallest building in America. Other buildings have since risen higher, but the city hall remains the largest municipal building in the nation, with more than 14.5 acres. City Hall  stands at the geographic center of what is perhaps the city most steeped in American history, a monolith of democracy and locus of municipal and state government, and is an icon of American fortitude you can’t miss.

Yellowstone National Park

Where: yellowstone national park, wyoming.

Not only is Yellowstone America’s first national park, but it is home to roughly half of the entire world’s population of active geysers. No other country boasts the span, depth, and width of America’s national park system, and Yellowstone National Park is the crowning jewel of them all. Explore the Grand Prismatic Spring (the third largest hot spring in the world and the largest in the U.S.) or plan your day around a visit to Old Faithful (Yellowstone’s most predictable geyser, where eruptions take place roughly every 50-120 minutes). If you’re looking for things to put on your bucket list, look no further.

Zion National Park

Where: springdale, utah.

President Woodrow Wilson first named this desert expanse a national park back in 1919, making it Utah’s first national park. Today more than 5 million people make the trek out to  Zion National Park  to explore this outdoor playground. The weather at Zion is something to factor in–rain can make the famous canyons of The Narrows a flash flood warning, so it’s best to visit during spring, summer, and fall. Natural rock arches jut up from the earth in a stunning display of geological wonder . Kolob Arch and Double Pine are among the favorites for many visitors, while Hidden Arch and Jughandle offer amazing photo opportunities.

INSIDER TIP Stay close to the canyon floor for a hike through The Narrows, a portion of Zion Canyon that’s only 20 to 30 feet wide in most sections.

The Grand Ole Opry

Where: nashville, tennessee.

It’s no question why country music fans from around the world flock to this U.S.A. bucket list venue. Not only is  The Grand Ole Opry  “country music’s most famous stage,” but it’s also often frequently referred to as “the birthplace of American music.” The first show began in 1925 at this venue, and the legacy lives on today as guests can tour the behind-the-scenes action and even catch a live performance.

INSIDER TIP Book a room at The Fairlane Hotel to stay close to the action, as this art-deco boutique hotel attracts many top names playing at the Opry.

INSIDER TIP Today, visitors can explore the Alamo Church and grounds for free, but for a small fee, the visitor’s center offers a range of interactive tours and audio guides that make this experience really come to life.

Diamond Head State Monument

Where: honolulu, hawaii.

A hike to the top of this 300,000-year-old crater will leave you breathless, and that’s not just because of the 560 feet elevation gain within .8 miles. The views at the crater’s peak are arguably  the best in Hawaii , so much so in fact that they were once used as a lookout by the U.S. military to protect the island from attacks . Although they now sit abandoned, bunkers from those military days still remain at the top of  Diamond Head State Monument , offering a perfect platform for whale watching for humpbacks during winter months.

INSIDER TIP Make sure to start your hike before 4:30 pm, so you have enough time to make it to the top and back before the gates close at 6 pm.

Pike Place Market

We lived in Seattle for almost eight years, so we’re very familiar with its numerous charms. People like to say it’s always rainy and overcast in Seattle, but that’s not the case. With so many fun things to do in Seattle , you can easily spend a week in the city and not get bored. While you are there check out a brewery or two and find out where to get some great tacos , pizza , and burgers.

Pike Place Market is also a huge draw for tourists in Seattle. The 100-year old market is packed full of vendors selling vegetables, huge bouquets of flowers, fresh seafood, amazing donut holes (seriously, don’t miss this!), and souvenirs of Seattle.

It’s a fun place to walk around and it has an incredible view of the Puget Sound and the mountains in the distance. Also from downtown Seattle, you can quickly take the ferry to the San Juan Islands or even all the way up to Victoria, Canada .

Portland, Oregon

The skyline of Portland, Oregon

I grew up in Oregon and we regularly visited Portland, both as an exciting big city and as a launching off point for the Oregon Coast and the Willamette Valley wine region . There’s a lot of see and enjoy in the city of Portland.

Portland is a bit of an idyllic city with a bustling town center where locals hang out on the weekends, lots of independent shops, craft breweries , and tons of coffee bars. You won’t want to miss a chance to try Voodoo Doughnuts, Salt & Straw ice cream, and one of the best Thai restaurants around, Pok Pok.

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

Philadelphia has always been a popular destination for Americans, especially families, who want to see and learn more about the early history of the United States, but it’s an incredible city for visitors from all over the world, too. See our shortcut guide for all the great things to do here.

You can easily fill a week with activities in this city, from visiting Independence Hall and the Liberty Bell, to eating your way around Reading Terminal Market, and trying all of the exciting restaurants. Austin, Texas

Austin, Texas

Austin is the state capital of Texas, but above all, it’s a college town, home to the University of Texas – you’ll know that the second you arrive on 6th Ave. But don’t let that sway your impression of Austin, because there’s so much more to it than that.

Austin is also well known for its eclectic music scene and outrageously good BBQ. If you’re into festivals, you may have heard of the South by Southwest (SXSW) festival that takes place in Austin every year in March, celebrating interactive media, film and music.

Maybe you’ve heard about our favorite event of the year, the  Austin Food & Wine Festival . Austin is a serious food mecca, between breakfast tacos, some of the best Bloody Mary’s, top chefs doing awesome things and dozens of food trucks. Explore the food scene with this guide on where to eat .

No matter your reason for visiting Austin, you’ll find something unique and refreshing about it. Take a look at our travel guide to Austin to plan your stay.

Charleston, South Carolina

Alba Truffles & Golden Beet Mezzaluna

You won’t believe how many great Charleston restaurants have popped up in the past few years. Not only does it have a lot of cultural and historical significance in the United States, being the crux of the South in the Civil War, but it also has its own very unique Southern hospitality and atmosphere.

You will definitely feel like you’re in the south, from the hotel you choose to stay in to the restaurants you eat at, and the way people speak to you on the street – it’s all very “Charleston”. It’s a charming city with a lot of polite and friendly folks who are eager to share their heritage with you.

Smaller Cities to Visit

1. maui, hawaii.

There are many great destinations to visit in Hawaii, but we absolutely love the island of  Mau i. It is easy to get to, has fantastic affordable luxury accommodations, and plenty of activities, like snorkeling , swimming with sea turtles, trying new delicacies like poke, hiking on volcanos , and going on excursions like whale watching.

The other great thing about Maui is that the island isn’t exceptionally large, so you can drive around to the activities you want to do and see easily, circle the whole island, or even stay on different parts of the island so you can see it all.

2. Monterey, California

If you’ve never been to Cannery Row in Monterey, California, you absolutely must go. On Cannery Row, you’ll find the world famous  Monterey Bay Aquarium , which will captivate your soul with its world class inhabitants.

One of our favorite things about the Monterey area is the abundance of great food. You can find the freshest seafood at restaurants like Sandbar & Grill and Schooners Monterey. It’s also a major growing area for artichokes and garlic. Let us help you find all of the fun things to do while you are there.

Just a short drive away is the stunning coastline and many fantastic, enormous beaches to explore and play on. Some of the  best beaches  include Moss Landing, Lovers Point, Asilomar State Beach, and Del Monte Beach. You’ll also want to save time for the 17-Mile Drive, scenic road that winds through Pebble Beach and Pacific Grove on the Monterey Peninsula. You won’t believe the sights along the way. It’s one of the prettiest drives in America.

3. Niagara Falls, New York

Niagara Falls is a stunning natural attraction that many travelers can’t wait to see. Not only is it an incredible example of how nature and landscape collide, it’s a destination packed with  things to do and see , both super tourist and not so touristy.

Walk around the falls, or even stay at a hotel with a view of the waterfall. Take the Maid of the Mist boat ride up to the falls or take the Journey Behind the Falls tour, which lets you see the underside of the waterfall.

Just a few miles away from the falls is the town of  Niagara on the Lake , which has some great opportunities for wine tasting, including the area’s special Ice Wine.

4. Sedona, Arizona

Sedona is one of the best places to visit in winter in the USA if you don’t want to stay cooped up indoors. This warm city gives visitors front-row seats to views of snow-capped red rocks with plenty of trails to hike through.

While many visitors avoid Arizona from late spring to late fall because of the tremendous heat, the winter is a great time to avoid the heat, go on hikes, and even go winter camping. And  ATV tour  through the canyons is also a stunner.

Admire the flora at the  Sedona Desert Botanical Garden  or stroll the lit-up downtown and its many shops, and take some time to peruse the Native American crafts and art at Kachina House.

» Check out this  Half-day Sedona Sightseeing Tour

5. Anchorage, Alaska

If you can handle a freezing winter in the US, head to exciting Anchorage in Alaska . The small town has activities like dog sledding, cross-country skiing,  snowshoeing , awe-inspiring glaciers, and ice fishing at the ready.

The best part of a visit to Anchorage is seeing the jaw-dropping  Northern Lights  dance in the night sky. The entertainment scene here is as varied as the landscape, with bars, theaters, and eateries aplenty.

Whether you want to play in the snow, curl up next to the fireplace, or celebrate winter in classic Alaska form,  Anchorage  is the perfect winter destination.

» Check out this  Wilderness, Wildlife, Glacier Experience, add upgrade to Portage Glacier Cruise

6. Nantucket, Massachusetts

Along with lively winter vacations, the USA also has something for people after a peaceful getaway.  Nantucket  fits the bill ever so well as it’s a summertime destination that has little-to-no tourists in winter, perfect for tranquil holidays.

Despite its quietness, holiday cheer isn’t completely lost as you can get lost in a forest of trees during the  Festival of Trees.  You can also enjoy ice skating at a rink or marvel at the snow-capped sand beaches.

I’ve been to all of these exception being Chicago – and totally agree! My favorite was Washington DC – can’t wait to go back, all the free museums and ease of public transport made it so easy for us as tourists!

Oh Charleston and Chicago are still on my list. I would always have said Chicago would have taken priority but you’ve intrigued me about Charleston. Sounds really interesting.

Both cities have their interesting aspects. I love them both, but for very different reasons.

Wonderful list, they all look great! Already added them to my list so hopefully will get to check them out soon!

US is a massive country and just seeing the list of names is intimidating for me, right now…because we haven’t even got started on it yet. Europe is always calling us back each time, and there are still so many places there we haven’t seen yet! But one has to start somewhere. Great compilation, though.

I know, it’s really hard to give up Europe to travel to US, but there really are some great places to visit if you ever do come our way.

My colleague keeps talking about Chicago and Washington DC. I definitely need to head south more often. Great post!!!

The 20 best places for solo travel, ranked in a new report.

A new report has listed the top places to travel solo. Pictured here: A traveler on the ... [+] Oberbaumbrucke bridge in Berlin, which was named the top spot for solo travelers.

Solo travel is having a moment. According to a recent report by Kayak and OpenTable that ranks the world’s best places for solo travel, 50% of Americans plan to take a solo trip within the next year.

What’s the appeal? The freedom to explore at your own pace, dive deep into a local culture and enjoy a meal without making small talk are just a few examples of what’s drawing adventurers to hit the road solo. Another reason: Without the distraction of a companion, solo travel allows for a deeper connection with the destinations you visit.

So where to go on your next solo trip? Kayak and OpenTable analyzed a number of cities in the U.S. and around the world based on the largest share of solo travel searches made on Kayak and the share of solo dining at OpenTable restaurants. They then crunched the numbers by tapping into data like safety (including a safety index from Numbeo and FBI crime reports), affordability (including prices of hotels, flights and meals on Kayak and OpenTable), hotel satisfaction scores and cultural richness (using OpenStreetMap to see the number of tagged museums, theaters and concert halls in a city). Lastly, an online consumer survey was conducted to determine how welcoming the cities are to solo travelers.

The result—a ranking of the 10 best destinations for solo travel worldwide and the 10 best places for solo trips in the U.S.

The World’s Best Cities for Solo Travel

Coming in at the top of the worldwide list is Berlin—and it’s easy to see why this German city has been named the world’s best city for solo travel. Whether you’re exploring the remnants of the Berlin Wall or dancing the night away in a techno club, Berlin offers solo travelers a chance to dive into a city that is as dynamic as it is welcoming. With an average meal cost of $31 and hotel prices at $168 per night, it’s a budget-friendly choice, too.

Coming in second on the list is Vancouver, a Canadian city that blends urban sophistication and natural beauty. Known for its safety and stunning landscapes, Vancouver is ideal for those who enjoy both city life and the great outdoors.

Montreal—another Canadian city—takes third place. A city of festivals, food and history, Montreal provides an exciting cultural experience with a European flair. Plus, it’s got a high safety rating and moderate costs, making it an excellent choice for solo travelers.

Other cities on the list include Paris (which might be famous as the city of love but is also a dream for solo travelers), followed by Milan, Dublin, Toronto, Dubai, Mexico City and London.

The Best U.S. Cities for Solo Travel

For those who prefer to stay stateside, Kayak and OpenTable also ranked the top U.S. cities for solo travel. Topping the list domestically is Washington, D.C. The nation’s capital is perfect for history buffs and art lovers alike, with plenty of opportunities to explore at your own pace. The city’s high average hotel rating and its numerous free attractions also help make it a top choice for solo travelers.

Walking alone on Beacon Hill in Boston.

Boston follows closely behind. Rich in history and brimming with character, the capital of Massachusetts offers solo travelers a chance to follow in the footsteps of America’s founders, enjoy world-class museums and dine in some of the best seafood restaurants in the country. The city’s compact size and walkability make it an easy and enjoyable place to explore on your own.

Chicago—a place known for its architecture, arts scene and deep-dish pizza—lands in third place. The Windy City offers a mix of cultural experiences, from the Art Institute to jazz clubs, making it a fantastic destination for those traveling alone. The city’s affordability and variety of attractions ensure you’ll never run out of things to do.

Beyond the top three, other U.S. cities that shine as solo travel destinations include Atlanta (which offers a blend of Southern hospitality and a rich culture); Salt Lake City (perfect for outdoor enthusiasts); Tampa, Florida; Philadelphia; Seattle; Los Angeles and New York City.

8 Best Places To See The Northern Lights In 2024

Northern lights.

The Northern Lights, or aurora borealis, are colourful light displays in polar skies, caused by solar particles colliding with Earth's atmosphere. These occur primarily near the Arctic Circle, in places like Norway, Iceland, and Canada, creating vibrant, glowing waves of light.

Whether cruising along Norway's coast or exploring its wilderness, the country offers terrific chances to witness the Northern Lights. Enjoy adventures like dogsledding, cross-country skiing, kayaking, and mountain biking while chasing the magical aurora borealis in this stunning Scandinavian landscape.

Kangerlussuaq, a small town on Greenland’s southwest coast, is perfect for viewing the Northern Lights due to its minimal light pollution. With a small population, the dark skies offer a prime spot to witness the auroras, whether from your window or on a guided tour.

Iceland is a top destination for the Northern Lights, with its dramatic landscapes, geysers, and glaciers offering a stunning backdrop. For the best views, explore the Golden Circle or venture into the remote wilderness to witness the auroras in this breathtaking setting.

Rovaniemi, in Finnish Lapland, is an ideal location for viewing the Northern Lights. While there, explore the Arctic wilderness, visit Santa Claus Village, and immerse yourself in the enchanting aurora displays that light up the winter skies.

Kiruna, Sweden, offers a unique experience with its famous Icehotel and incredible Northern Lights views. Stay in the Icehotel and watch the lights dance across the Arctic sky. Nearby, Abisko National Park is renowned for its clear skies, making it another excellent spot for aurora sightings.

Scotland, though less famous for the Northern Lights, sometimes offers lucky stargazers a glimpse of the auroras. To improve your chances, head to the northern regions, far from city lights, where dark skies provide the perfect backdrop for this celestial spectacle.

Michigan, USA

Michigan’s Upper Peninsula is a surprising location for aurora sightings. Its dark skies and proximity to the Great Lakes make it an unexpected but rewarding choice for Northern Lights enthusiasts.

Jasper, Alberta, Canada

Jasper National Park offers pristine wilderness and minimal light pollution. Bundle up and explore the Canadian Rockies while keeping an eye on the night sky for those mesmerising green and pink hues.

15 Best Warm Places to Travel to This Winter

Leave the cold behind with a trip to one of these warm-weather destinations.

top 10 cities to visit

Sure, the winter months have their perks — skiing, sledding, snowman building, and the holidays, of course. But the cold! Oh, the cold. It digs deep under your skin, straight to your bones, chilling everything from your toes to your chattering teeth. Fortunately, several year-round, warm-weather destinations can offer a much-needed respite from the frigid air.

From island getaways to sizzling cities, here are the best warm-weather places to visit in December, January, and February.

  • Best tourist destination: The Bahamas
  • Underrated hidden gem: Panama Highlands
  • Best for families: San Juan, Puerto Rico
  • Best for couples: Rangiroa, French Polynesia
  • Best for solo travelers: Bangkok

Read on for our full list of recommendations for places to travel to this winter.

The Bahamas

Per Breiehagen / Getty Images

Sometimes, you just need to get away from the cold and not think about a single thing. And that's exactly what you can do in The Bahamas , an island chain that's about a three-hour flight from New York City. There are several beautiful destinations to choose from — New Providence Island, Grand Bahama Island, and the Exumas (and their famous swimming pigs) come to mind. Many of the archipelago's inhabited islands are home to some of the country's best all-inclusive resorts , making it an ideal winter getaway for families, couples, or solo travelers.

Panama Highlands

Cavan Images / Getty Images

While Panama has its share of splendid coastlines, the country's vast interior should not be overlooked, especially for a winter vacation. Temperatures in the highlands are generally in the 60s and 70s year-round, creating ideal conditions for outdoor adventures. Visitor-favorite activities here include bird-watching and, for more adventurous types, crisscrossing the verdant mountains via the famous hanging bridges of Boquete. The region is also home to a stellar coffee scene worth exploring. Book a stay at The Haven , an adults-only wellness resort that makes a great base if you're looking to do a local coffee tour.

San Juan, Puerto Rico

Taylor McIntyre / Travel + Leisure

If you want to blend some time under the sun with some cultural enrichment, look no further than the capital city of Puerto Rico , which has long stretches of white-sand beaches, and historic attractions like the famous Castillo San Felipe del Morro fort. Visitors will also find lots of places to sample delicious Puerto Rican food — make a reservation at Cocina Abierta and thank us later. In San Juan, it's best to go boutique, so check into the O:LV Fifty Five hotel, which features a rooftop pool and bar offering the best views in town.

Rangiroa, French Polynesia

Mlenny / Getty Images

Though more than a hundred islands comprise French Polynesia, just a handful of them (like Tahiti, Bora Bora, and Moorea) get most of the attention. If you prefer to visit somewhere a little less crowded, try the quiet, sparsely developed atoll of Rangiroa. Located about an hour from Tahiti by air, the island has plenty of pristine beaches and a massive lagoon brimming with sea life. Stay at the Hotel Kia Ora Resort & Spa , which boasts stunning overwater bungalows and villas with private plunge pools.

Pakin Songmor / Getty Images

Winter happens to be the best time to visit Thailand , especially its capital city, Bangkok. The weather is balmy year-round thanks to the country's tropical location, but the winter months offer slightly more comfortable temperatures, with highs rarely exceeding 90 degrees. To get the most out of this massive city, it's best to book a lengthy visit or hire a local guide — there are tons of tour options available through Airbnb Experiences , for instance, that focus on food, culture, and photography. Don't miss out on the city's canals, either, which you can tour on a long-tail boat. Make your home base the Mandarin Oriental, Bangkok , a long-running honoree in Travel + Leisure 's World's Best Awards .

Ambergris Caye, Belize

With nonstop flights available from several U.S. cities — including New York, Los Angeles, Dallas, Houston, Atlanta, and Miami — getting to the Central American nation of Belize is easier than you think. And while the country's interior is filled with lush, verdant landscapes home to ancient temples, monkeys, and even a few rare jaguars, the real star is the coast.

To experience the white-sand beaches at their best, make your way to Ambergris Caye. Belize's largest island is known for its water sports, including diving and snorkeling around the nearby Belize Barrier Reef and its famous Great Blue Hole . For a luxe visit, book a few nights at Alaia Belize , which provides easy access to the beach as well as a swimming pool that's suspended six stories above the main access corridor, with portholes in the bottom that offer aerial views of the property.

Mexico City

Jorge Castro / Travel + Leisure

Though winter in Mexico City won't have the tropical heat you might expect from the rest of the country — temperatures tend to top out in the upper 60s or lower 70s this time of year — it still provides a balmy alternative to snowy U.S. locales. The capital is flush with cultural attractions , including first-rate museums like the stunning Museo Frida Kahlo , incredible shopping at both high-end stores and local markets, and some of the best restaurants in the world (we're looking at you, Pujol ). Make your home base Las Alcobas , a luxury hotel offering lavish guest rooms and a tranquil spa, perfect for relaxing in after a day of urban exploration.

Key West, Florida

NAPA74 / Getty Images

Key West is a true delight during the winter months, as the average high temperature never really falls below 75 degrees. It's the perfect place for fruity cocktails on the sand, sunset strolls down lively shopping streets, and slice after slice of tangy Key lime pie. Make the most of your time here by booking a stay at the historic Casa Marina Key West , a Curio Collection by Hilton property that just finished an extensive renovation in spring 2024. Through the hotel, you can book local food tours, golf outings, and sailboat cruises, or simply sit by the pool and soak in all that Florida Keys sun.

Martin Harvey / Getty Images

If you're seeking an African safari this winter without the crowds of a classic destination like Kenya , try the less-traveled terrain of Namibia . Located on Africa's southwest coast, the country offers seclusion, otherworldly landscapes, and near-guaranteed warm weather. It's also the perfect place to see animals like lions, elephants, leopards, and rhinos in their natural environment. There are several outfitters to choose from, but Natural Selection is top-notch, offering numerous safari camp options, including the famed Shipwreck Lodge on the Skeleton Coast.

Jorg Greuel / Getty Images

When the first cold snap hits, book a flight to Dubai . The desert oasis offers not just warm weather but a mind-boggling array of things to do, from swimming in the Persian Gulf to shopping at some of the world's most luxurious stores and dining at multiple Michelin-starred restaurants. Don't forget to visit the Burj Khalifa , the tallest building in the world at over 160 stories, while you're here, via an elevator that travels at an ear-popping 33 feet per second. Try Atlantis, The Palm — or Atlantis Dubai's latest addition Atlantis, The Royal — for your overnight stays, each property a veritable playground for those looking to indulge in the finer things in life.

Art Wager / Getty Images

Pick an island, any island — or make it a multi-island trip . Start on Oahu , home of the vibrant capital city, Honolulu, and Waikiki Beach. For a tropical, relaxed vibe, head to Kauai for scenic hiking and kayaking adventures. Hawaii Island offers the chance to view active volcanoes up close at Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, while Maui is where you'll find some of the poshest resorts on the islands, complete with luxury spas and fancy restaurants. On each island, the Malama Hawaii program connects visitors with volunteer opportunities so you can give back to the local community. Some resorts will even offer special rates and discounts to those who participate, like third-, fourth-, or fifth-night free deals or packages with food and beverage credits.

Tessa Desjardins/Travel + Leisure

Just because Queenstown is New Zealand's most popular ski town doesn't mean it's not worth visiting when the weather is warmer. It's a great time to take on one of the area's popular hikes, check out the local wineries, or spend some time strolling lakeside in Queenstown Gardens. A scenic trip up the Skyline Queenstown gondola is definitely in order, as is a bungee jump or two if you're feeling brave enough (no pressure!). Whether you choose to indulge in a luxurious stay at one of Queenstown's top resorts — Eichardt's , Rosewood Matakauri , and The Carlin are among the best — or the city is just part of a larger adventure around New Zealand, the weather will be between 68 and 86 degrees from December through February.

Siripong Kaewla-iad / Getty Images

Lest we forget, it's summer down under, too, between December and February, with Sydney temperatures hovering around the 65-to-78 degrees mark. Translation: It's beach time! Pack your swimsuit and head to Bondi Beach to see the surfers do their thing or go for a swim at the famous Bondi Icebergs ocean pools (pictured above). If it's too crowded, try the Bronte Baths or Wylie's Baths a few suburbs south in Bronte Beach and Coogee Beach, respectively. Treat yourself to a luxury stay downtown at The Langham, Sydney , or the Park Hyatt Sydney , both located in the historic "The Rocks" neighborhood and within walking distance of Sydney Harbour.

Buenos Aires

Robert Frerck / Getty Images

If you've been waiting for an excuse to learn to tango in Buenos Aires , winter is a wonderful time to head south, with temperatures between 64 and 75 degrees. There's no shortage of dance clubs if you'd like to try out your moves — or tango shows if you'd prefer to leave it to the professionals. Besides dancing, the city is known for its food and wine scene, with shops and tasting rooms selling bottles from Argentina's best vineyards. Stay in the super-luxe Faena Hotel Buenos Aires , home of the popular Rojo Tango dinner show , or Palacio Duhau-Park Hyatt Buenos Aires , just a 10-minute walk from Recoleta Cemetery, where Eva Perón (Evita) was laid to rest.

iStockphoto / Getty Images

Another southern hemisphere spot known for its wine regions is Cape Town , where winter (well, summer) temperatures tend to be between 68 and 78 degrees during the day. Head 40 minutes out of the city to the Stellenbosch wine region, home of Babylonstoren , a hidden gem favorite of area locals for its vineyards, garden cafe, and other agri-tourism efforts. Then, retreat to a luxury stay at The Twelve Apostles Hotel & Spa in Camps Bay, where you can indulge in a relaxing treatment or two and enjoy views of the Atlantic Ocean.

After traveling to all 50 US states, these are the 6 major cities I have no plans to return to

  • After traveling to all 50 US states, I've been to my fair share of major cities .
  • Although I've loved a handful of the cities, there are some I don't plan on visiting again.
  • I probably won't return to places like Las Vegas, Miami, Boston, or Phoenix.

Insider Today

As a full-time travel writer and creator, I'm always eager to explore new places. I've visited all 50 states and have spent my fair share of time in nearly every major city in the United States.

Even though I generally gravitate toward more remote, outdoor-recreation-focused locales, there are a handful of cities I always enjoy visiting.

However, some places haven't left me wanting to book a return trip. Here are the six major US cities that I have no plans to return to.

Oregon is one of my favorite states, but I don't plan on returning to Portland.

top 10 cities to visit

Oregon is one of my all-time favorite states to travel to. Its landscapes feature incredible waterfalls, dramatic coastlines, and bright-green foliage at nearly every turn.

However, my love for the state's natural beauty is the main reason I have no desire to revisit Portland, which is the largest city in Oregon.

Although I had an OK time during my previous visits to the city, nothing really stood out to me. If I wanted to visit a major city in the Pacific Northwest, I'd instead visit Seattle, which has always felt more vibrant to me.

Some people love Las Vegas, but it just wasn't for me.

top 10 cities to visit

Although many people seem to love Las Vegas , it simply isn't a place I would choose to visit again.

The crowds and commercialization aren't my style, and there's so much natural beauty within two hours of the city. I'd rather spend my time exploring places like Red Rock Canyon, Valley Of Fire State Park , and Death Valley National Park.

If I'm visiting Florida, there are other cities I'd choose over Miami.

top 10 cities to visit

Throughout my travels, I've honestly enjoyed spending time in Florida more than most other states. That said, Miami hasn't been high on my list of places to return to.

The crowding and somewhat superficial feeling I've gotten while visiting has been a turn-off, and like many other cities on this list, there are just too many other options nearby I'd rather visit.

Instead, I love traveling to the Florida Keys, Jacksonville, the Everglades, and smaller towns on the Gulf Coast.

None of my experiences in Boston have been particularly memorable.

I've traveled to Boston a handful of times. Maybe I've just had bad luck, but I haven't had a memorable experience during any of my visits.

Although I'm sure there's a lot of the city I haven't seen, I haven't been impressed in a way that makes me want to spend much more time there.

Instead, I love using Boston as a jumping-off point for other East Coast travel.

I found Los Angeles to be too congested and overwhelming.

There's nothing that I really dislike about Los Angeles — I just think there are so many better options nearby.

Boasting a vibrant cultural scene, world-class dining, and iconic landmarks, I think it's a great place to visit once or twice. Still, the city's congestion and overwhelming size can often overshadow its charms, which is why I have no plans to return to Los Angeles itself.

Instead, when I'm in the area, I love visiting Malibu , Topanga Canyon, Santa Barbara, or even San Diego. These less-crowded cities have excellent access to nature and less traffic than LA, which is important to me.

When I'm in the Phoenix area, I often find myself traveling outside the city.

Phoenix, a desert oasis that has experienced explosive growth in recent years, presents a unique blend of urban amenities and natural beauty.

The city offers a thriving arts scene, professional sports teams, and a burgeoning culinary landscape. However, as someone who travels to the Phoenix area several times a year, I tend to leave the city proper fairly quickly, heading over to nearby Scottsdale or Mesa — or further north to Sedona or Flagstaff.

Although Phoenix has a lot to offer as a growing metropolis, I find that I'd rather spend my time outside the city, where I can access nature and more serene wellness resorts.

These are the hottest zip codes for home sales in 2024. See which cities buyers are flocking to.

Updated on: August 26, 2024 / 5:28 PM EDT / CBS News

Faced with high prices and mortgage rates, homebuyers are flocking to certain sections of the Midwest and metro-adjacent areas in the Northeast and Midwest in search of the right balance of affordable prices and desirable locales, according to Realtor.com's annual  list  which ranks the "Hottest Zip Codes" in the U.S.

The U.S. housing market is in a deep sales slump, thanks to the double whammy of high borrowing costs and home prices that have priced many homebuyers out of the market. But don't expect properties in these zip codes to sit around for very long, according to Realtor.com. Properties in these zips saw between 2.9 and 5.2 times more views than the average U.S. home listing, and spent between 32 and 45 fewer days on the market in the first six months of the 2024.

In keeping with last year's results, Midwest and Northeast zip codes dominated the top 10 slots on Realtor.com's list once again. Three of the top 10 hottest zip codes are in the Midwest, where housing prices on average were 24.6% lower than the national median in June. The remaining seven zip codes are in the Northeast, where average home prices in the three most affordable neighborhoods was 28.8% below the U.S. median in June.

"The hottest zip codes emphasize the importance this year's home shoppers are placing on affordability," said Hannah Jones, senior economic research analyst with Realtor.com. "Prices in each zip code are either lower than the national median or than the zip's surrounding metro."

The real estate site calculated the most popular zip codes by measuring unique views of properties listed on their website, and how many days each listing remained active.

Location matters too

Not all homebuyers are focused on the price tag, according the Realtor.com report, which found that many house hunters are also looking to capitalize on strong local economies like Columbus and St. Louis. Living in close proximity to major economic hubs gives consumers the benefits of city life without having to sacrifice space, affordability or quality of life.

For example, No. 4 on the list, ZIP 07920, or Basking Ridge, New Jersey, provides more affordable living options within commuting distance to New York City. Although the median listing price for the area edges close to a million, at $967,000, it's still a relative bargain next to prices in the Big Apple. In June 2024, the median listing price per square foot in the New Jersey town was $365, or 33.6% lower than the surrounding metro area's average.

Here's a look at the most fiercely competitive zip codes, and what buyers can expect in these markets moving forward.

Zips that made top 10

For the second year in a row, ZIP 43230, Gahanna, Ohio, came in at No. 1. Home to Ohio State University and a vibrant food and art scene, Gahanna offers all of the "amenities and quality-of-life advantages of a larger town, but at a lower price point," the report says.

The small Ohio city, which has a population of 35,000, drew significant interest from buyers in the nearby capital of Columbus, which was responsible for over half of the Realtor.com views on Gahanna listings.

"The large amount of within-metro viewership suggests that homeowners in the hot Columbus market are shopping around to perhaps cash in on existing home equity to fund an upgrade or possibly to purchase an investment property," the report says.

Other top Midwest zips that made it onto the list include ZIP 63021 (Ballwin, MO) which ranked second, and ZIP 46322 (Highland, IN), which ranked ninth. All three were also on last year's list.

The Northeast also proved to be a hotspot for buyers, with seven of the top 10 zip codes stemming from that region. Zips that made it onto the list include ZIP 01970 (Salem, MA), which ranked third; ZIP 07920 (Basking Ridge, NJ), which ranked fourth; and ZIP 14609 (Rochester, NY) which ranked fifth.

Demand for houses in hot zip codes in the Midwest and Northeast has grown despite a rise in inventory of an average 5.7% annually in the first half of 2024. The increase in demand has, however, pushed median listing prices in those areas an average 7.4%, compared with a 0.4% increase nationally.

Meanwhile, buyer interest has waned in regions in the South and West, which did not make this year's list and have become less affordable due to a surge in prices post-COVID and an increase in housing supply, according to Realtor.com.

What to expect in the markets moving ahead

Jones from Realtor.com said she expects the Midwest and Northeast to maintain a strong hold on the market, especially as buyers continue to seek out affordable options outside of major metropolitan hubs.

But as demand peaks in these areas, consumers can also expect more price increases to follow. That doesn't mean that buyers can't get a deal, Jones said, but they will have to keep a close eye on the market and be ready to pounce, offer in hand, when the moment comes.

"Even with recent price growth, the country's hottest zips still offer buyers relatively affordable homeownership," she said. "However, buyers will face fierce competition in these red-hot markets."

The Realtor.com analyst said buyers can stay ahead of the curve by  saving searches on their site  or exploring the  Market Hotness map layer , which allows users to compare the demand across different zips.
