The Best Travel Beauty Tips, Straight From Jet-Setting Influencers

Uncover the secrets to battling "flight face" with insider tips from seasoned globetrotters.

Top influencers share their travel beauty tips for arriving with a camera-ready glow.

As travel season shifts into full swing, it’s inevitable for your mind to set sail to exotic destinations across the globe. Whether you're meandering through Palermo's cobbled lanes or sneaking away to the Swiss Alps, selecting the right makeup essentials is crucial for any jet-setting escapade.

Before you can lounge, there's one travel woe all beauty lovers must deal with: the dreaded "flight face." Prolonged hours spent in a dry, pressurized cabin and varying climates can sap the life from your skin, making pre-flight hydration a must for a radiant arrival.

While many folks wrestle with paring down their makeup stash to TSA-approved sizes, other frequent flyers cling to their tried-and-true beauty favorites — think a high-protection SPF 50+ stick for UV-heavy days and a hydrating mask for spontaneous hotel spa indulgences.

In anticipation of your upcoming European jaunts (or otherwise), Bustle connected with seven seasoned globetrotters and content creators who excel at airborne beauty. Keep reading for their top travel tips, must-have products, and secrets to landing with a camera-ready glow.

What is your top travel beauty hack?

I tend to do a lot of pre-trip beauty rituals. I like to get a lash lift and tint, my eyebrows laminated and tinted, lymphatic drainage [massage], my skin exfoliated and soft — I swear by the NERRĀ Bathhouse Ritual — and a hard gel manicure and a gel pedicure. Having this all done before a trip ensures that I look and feel my best so I can focus on the moment.

How do you ensure your skin looks good post-flight?

Before my flight, I typically double-cleanse my skin and apply moisturizer. If it’s a day flight, I'll also apply sunscreen. The Beauty of Joseon, Matte SPF50+ Sun Stick is ideal for travel and continual re-application — I never leave the house with it. Once I'm in the air, I cleanse my skin again and apply a mask like the Cle de Peau Brightening Mask Treatment Supreme .

These last few trips I’ve been packing a small pot of the SkinCeuticals Triple Lipid Restore 242 which I apply under my sunblock. I also think a few spritzes of Superegg Kind Atmosphere Biome Mist always does the trick to refresh my skin.

I also travel with supplements like Nigma Talib’s Super Vitamin C Cocktail and AG1 travel packs , which I take during the flight.

What beauty products do you never travel without?

All I pack is concealer, blush, and lip liner. My favorites include the Clé de Peau Beauté Concealer because it’s a small stick and easy to blend with my fingers. I love the PAT McGRATH LABS Divine Cream Blush: Legendary Glow Color Balm in Divine Rose . And I’ve been gatekeeping this for over 10 years, but Paris Berlin makes my favorite that I carry everywhere with me.

What beauty products do you always have with you when flying?

Hydration is my top priority when flying, both before and after the flight. I start with Chanel's Le Lift Eye Patches to keep my under eyes looking fresh and awake. Then I use Philosophy’s Glow Moisturizer , which gives my skin that perfect bounce. Guerlain’s Youth Water Oil adds an incredible glow before I seal everything in with moisturizer. Finally, Caudalie’s Grape Water Moisturizing Face Mist is a must — I use it before, during, and after the flight to keep my skin refreshed and deeply hydrated throughout the journey.

How do you ensure your hair looks good post-flight?

If I’m traveling I make sure my hair is in braids so I don't have to worry about it. I love knotless braided moments. Your hair will look great before, during, and after the flight... trust me.

Always have your Fenty Beauty Blotting Powder ready. You never know when you're going to want to take a memorable photo during your travels and this will keep you looking stunning.

Gua sha , hand sanitizer, a thick lip balm — I love the Dr. Lipp Nipple Balm — and my rosewater spray. I spray this over 50 times during a flight to keep my face fresh.

My skin gets super dry on flights so I love to lather my face in U Beauty’s Super Hydrator or a thick face oil.

I will never leave the house without my Bahay Kubo scrunchies and headbands . These are my life savers. When I fly, I put my hair in a bun, tie it with my Bahay Kubo Silk Scrunchie , and then put a headband over my hairline. When I land, I take them out and my hair is as voluminous and bouncy as if I just got out of the salon.

I always bring a Barefoot Dreams blanket and a silk eye mask. Most of my flights are long-haul, so I need to get my beauty sleep.

Before a flight, I always apply Chanel hand cream . On the flight, I always have Summer Fridays Lip Balm to keep my lips hydrated and at least one colored lip gloss for when I land like the one from Hourglass in Trace .

On longer flights, I like to use Augustinus Bader eye patches, and I finish off with a spritz of Caudalie Beauty Elixir Mist to look rested and refreshed when I arrive.

I always pack the Oribe Teasing Brush to tame any flyaways and keep a sleek, slicked-back look when I land. Keeping my hair out of my face makes traveling much easier and more comfortable.

I love packing multi-use makeup products. Instead of eyeshadow palettes that can break during travel, I grab eyeshadow sticks like those from Bobbi Brown and Violette_FR . They're durable and easy to use. Another fave is the Chanel highlighter sticks , which I use as eyeshadow, highlighter, and blush.

I always pack Summer Fridays Lip Butter Balm , travel-size Neutrogena facial wipes , and Neo Cutis Bio Cream Moisturizer , which works great for both face and hands without pilling under makeup. I also bring Systane eye drops to use throughout the flight and Lumify to counteract redness before landing.

I rely on Skin Better’s tinted sunscreen compact for UV protection, even in the air. Lastly, I pack a travel toothbrush and toothpaste and use filtered water from a bottle instead of the airplane bathroom water to brush my teeth. I don't apply facial products during the flight unless my skin feels parched.

I like to get a blowout before I leave.

My nighttime routine for plump, dewy skin starts with applying MG-EXO Skin Exosomes by DP Dermaceuticals . I use a 0.25mm dermaroller to work them into my skin. Then, I apply a hyaluronic acid sheet mask followed by the SkinMedica TNS Advanced Serum to enhance the absorption of growth factors. In the morning, I use SkinMedica TNS serum , Neocutis Bio Cream , and IT Cosmetics CC+ Color Correcting Tinted Sunscreen for a post-facial glow.

For my body, I use Cecily Braden’s Lymphatic Brushes with Clarins Body Fit Cream to stimulate my lymphatic system.

How do you keep your skin looking fresh when flying?

I start with Neutrogena makeup remover wipes for a quick and easy cleanse on the flight. After that, I reach for a moisturizing cream like Crème de La Mer , Dior Prestige La Crème , La Prairie Skin Caviar , or Summer Fridays Jet Lag . These are perfect for replenishing my skin’s moisture after using the wipes or for freshening up right after the flight. I also always bring my Slip silk sleep mask . It helps me rest well, so I arrive feeling refreshed.

Besides the moisturizers I mentioned, I bring my Kevyn Aucoin Eyebrow Pencil , Dior Le Baume for my hands, and Makeup by Mario’s MoistureGlow Plumping Lip Serum .

Stay hydrated — bring your own bottle of water onto the plane because the in-flight cups are tiny. And even if you forget everything else, bring a moisturizer and lip balm so you can avoid skin dryness from the airplane air. Also, dress comfortably, but not too shlubby — if you look your best, you'll feel your best.

I arrive at the airport with minimal makeup — just tinted SPF, blush, and oil lip gloss. Once on the plane, I clean my face with a wipe, spritz hypochlorous acid face mist — I love Magic Molecule  — apply The Serum by Timeline , and layer more face mist. I either use the Korean collagen mask from Sungboon or the Laneige Sleep Mask for a bouncy, dewy finish.

About 30 minutes before landing, I wipe off my mask, use the ZIIP Halo device to sculpt and glow, follow with a terahertz gua sha , apply serum and mist, then finish with tinted SPF, Youthforia BYO Blush Oil , Urban Decay Brow Slick , Lumify eye drops , and IDUN Minerals Vatn Volume Mascara .

I either style it pre-flight and secure it in a claw clip or, if I have time to wash it later, I slick it back with oil during the flight for a chic, easy-to-refresh look.

What’s your top travel beauty tip?

I start hydrating the morning of the flight and keep drinking throughout. Pre-flight, I also try to fit in a workout and do an "everything shower."

Dermatologists Say You Should Never Travel Without These 11 Beauty Products — Prices Start at $7

Keep your skin hydrated and nourished with these expert-approved picks.

travel beauty secrets

Travel + Leisure / Daisy Rodriguez

It can be hard enough to find a skincare regime that works for you in general, let alone one that you can travel with. Between airport regulations on what you can and can’t pack to trying to preserve as much space in your toiletry bag as possible, curating a travel skincare routine can be challenging, but not impossible. That’s why we tapped the experts on the subject, a.k.a. licensed dermatologists and aestheticians, to share some insight on what’s worth packing and leaving at home to get your routine ready for travel.

Complete with an sunscreen that can do double duty and a facial cleansing bar that’ll not only cleanse, but control puffiness from long flights, this list features the 11 best skincare and beauty picks, hand-selected by dermatologists themselves. Better yet, prices start at just $7, so curating the perfect travel skincare stash is just a budget-friendly scroll away.

Carbon Theory Labs Vitamin C and Caffeine Facial Cleansing Bar

Dr. Nava Greenfield is a New York City-based board-certified dermatologist that recommends travelers to “prioritize the basics and prescriptions. Don't pack the exfoliators that you use one to two times weekly, don't pack the eye cream that takes up room but only requires one pin drop size when applying.”

As for her go-to skincare product, she loves this vitamin C and caffeine cleansing bar that “works to control the under-eye puffiness that can occur from flights and lack of sleep, and also as an antioxidant cleanser. This comes in a resealable bag, which is perfect for the hotel and then to bring back home to use again for the next trip.”

Ren Skincare Mini Evercalm Global Protection Day Cream

Ren Skincare

Dr. Greenfield also suggests leaving behind your “large fluid moisturizer and cleanser that can't go on the carry-on." She continued, "Skip the morning antioxidant serum that also needs to be checked. Instead, pack travel-sized products that accomplish multiple functions in one.”

So, what does she pack when her skin needs a little extra hydration and nourishment post-flight? Dr. Greenfield told Travel + Leisure that she's a fan of Ren Clean Skincare because of the brand's toxin-free products, which are not only clean for your skin, but also for the planet. Snag this powerful balmy moisturizer, which is formulated with soothing and reparative ingredients to keep your skin relaxed and free of redness ,irritation, and dryness when you're traveling.

CeraVe Hydrating Facial Cleanser Travel Size

Although many hotels come equipped with their own toiletries, these products don’t always cater to every skin type or your complexion's unique concerns. In a TikTok video, dermatologist Dr. Andrea Suarez bluntly shared that “hotel toiletries are horrible" and implored her followers to " do yourself a favor and pack a hydrating facial cleanser,” this way you can ensure that you're effectively washing your face without stripping or disturbing your skin barrier.

Her top pick is the incredibly popular and travel-sized Hydrating Facial Cleanser from CeraVe, which is gentle enough for even the most sensitive skin. It features skin barrier-strengthening ceramides and hyaluronic acid to restore moisture after cleansing, so your skin will never feel tight or look red after using it.

Aquaphor Healing Ointment Two-Pack

In that same video, Dr. Suarez also recommended snagging a travel-sized version of Aquaphor to fend away cracked heels, chafing, and, of course, chapped lips. At just a quarter of an ounce, this versatile travel superstar will take you far, and save precious toiletry bag space in the process. Leave your lip balm, foot ointments, and chafing creams at home in lieu of this convenient, effective product. It can also come in handy for minor injuries and sunburns with its healing properties, and even double as a dewy highlighter when applied to your cheekbones.

Murad Multi-Vitamin Clear Coat SPF 50

According to dermatologist Dr. Tia Paul , “It's essential to take care of your skin, considering factors like sun exposure, changes in climate, and environmental stressors.” This is especially true during the warm-weather travel seasons, which is why she wholeheartedly believes that the most important skincare product is sunscreen.

Need help picking a new, do-it-all SPF? Dr. Paul loves the Murad Multi-Vitamin Clear Coat SPF 50 that has a clear, gel-based formula that “doesn't just offer UVA/UVB protection, but it also has antioxidant such as vitamins C, D, E, and F to help prevent the early signs of aging that can be caused by sun damage.”

La Roche-Posay Hyalu B5 Pure Hyaluronic Acid Serum

Between the stale air of flights and the stress of long travel days, the skin can become incredibly dry and irritated. To keep your skin plump and hydrated, New York-based dermatologist Dr. Jeremy Bauer suggests packing a hyaluronic serum for a daily boost of moisture.

His go-to is the La Roche-Posay Hyalu B5 Pure Hyaluronic Acid Serum because it “combines various humectants in one product. It helps hydrate and plump the skin with hyaluronic acid, dimethicone and vitamin B5 — the perfect all-in-one serum for your next excursion.”

Colorescience Sunforgettable Total Protection Brush-On Shield SPF 50

Nurse practitioner and founder of Destination Aesthetics Medical Spa Shawna Chrisman travels a lot for both work and pleasure, and if there’s one thing that you can bet always stays in her travel bag, it's her Colorescience’s Sunforgettable Total Protection Brush-On Shield SPF 50. The genius two-in-one product is both your powder compact and sunscreen with its color-correcting, oil-absorbing, and broad-spectrum SPF 50 technology.

“Even on the airplane your skin can be exposed to sunlight so it’s important to reapply. This powder, all-mineral sunscreen breezes through TSA and goes on easily over my makeup for all-day, on-the-go, reapplication.”

Colorescience Total Eye 3-in-1 Renewal Therapy SPF 35

Chrisman also advocates for travelers to pack products that do more than just one thing, which is why she’s also a fan of the brand's Total Eye Renewal Therapy SPF 35, a three-in-one tinted eye cream that conceals dark circles, reduces puffiness, and protects the sensitive under-eyes from the sun with its SPF 35 formula.

“This product allows me to streamline my eye routine because it is a treatment serum, mineral SPF for the eyes, and concealer all in one product. The cooling applicator feels amazing on tired eyes and it helps depuff and make me look like I got eight hours of rest, even after a red-eye.”

RoC Retinol Anti-Aging Wrinkle Night Serum

Dermatologist Dr. Sejal Shah (otherwise known as the @dermdoctor ) has accrued a massive following on TikTok thanks to his helpful skincare advice and tips. I’m one of his 18 million followers, and I recently came across a video of his where he recommends these genius retinol capsules from RoC that he dubs “perfect for travel.”

He went on to explain that you only need to use one capsule at night and that the formula is packed with incredibly potent anti-aging ingredients (retinol is great for reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, dark spots, and more). They're also incredibly travel-friendly as well. Snag a pack for half off at Amazon.

Mrsdry Travel Toiletry Bottles

Stocking up on travel-sized versions of your favorite products is undoubtedly convenient if you’re packing for a last-minute trip, but if you want to save money and space, Dr. Shah also urged viewers to purchase travel toiletry bottles or pouches to fill up with their go-to products.

If you have sensitive skin and like to stick to a routine, this is a smart way to get the most out of your trip, and products. Plus, this specific set from Mrsdry is on sale for just $8 today if you want to kickstart curating your perfect travel skincare regime.

Mirabella Defense CC Cream

Licensed aesthetician Serynne Evans Atwell, who is an in-house aesthetician and education lead at Mirabella , recommends paying extra close attention to your skin during transitional seasons and times when it's put under stress (particularly during travel). As such, she recommends packing Mirabella's Defense CC Crème Foundation because it's a true “M.V.P. skincare and makeup essential for pulling double duty while traveling.”

She went on to explain, "Infused with skin-loving ingredients, this multitasking wonder not only perfects and renews the skin's appearance but also provides mineral-based sun protection equivalent to SPF 20, guarding against harmful UV rays. As you apply, vitamin E beads burst onto the skin, imparting a luxurious feel and creamy consistency that blends effortlessly to a natural finish." Other key ingredients include bamboo extract, lavender, avocado oil, and rosemary to soothe, moisturize, and protect the skin, while salicylic acid keeps oil and breakouts at bay.

I’m a Travel Writer and This Is My Beauty Routine for a Long-Haul Flight

From maximizing hydration to taking care of your skin, here's everything you need to know.

  • Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate

Ease (or Prevent) Bloating

Maximize layovers, take care of hair, prioritize sleep, refresh and arrive in style.

As a travel writer, I’ve traversed the world dozens of times, visiting far-flung destinations from Morocco to the Maldives. While Emerson may have believed that it's not the destination, but the journey that matters … he never flew on an airplane. From dry cabin air to decreased blood flow, the elements of flying leave most passengers with “Flight Face” — dehydrated and puffy.

On a recent 30-hour journey to Kenya from San Diego, I was dreading the back-to-back red-eye flights and long layover. Then, determined to make the best of it, I decided to use the long-haul flight as an opportunity for some overdue self-care. I gathered up some of the best beauty and wellness treatments in an effort to see which ones could counter the toll that airplanes take, hoping to step off the final flight looking and feeling refreshed. Here’s exactly what I did.

Meet the expert

  • Azadeh Shirazi, MD , is a board-certified dermatologist in La Jolla, California.
  • Michele Green, MD , is a board-certified cosmetic dermatologist in New York City.
  • Chloë Ward is a functional diagnostic nutrition practitioner and certified integrative nutrition health coach in Santa Barbara, California.

Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate

Our skin feels most comfortable in 40 to 70 percent humidity, yet during a flight, cabin humidity is typically 10 to 20 percent. This creates transepidermal water loss, which the skin may try to compensate for by retaining water. Combined with a lymphatic system that isn’t working at its peak because we’re largely sedentary, blood flow and circulation slows, leading to puffiness, while decreased moisture creates dehydrated skin.

To ensure you’re getting enough hydration for your journey, fill your water bottle post-security and drink up before you get on a flight where beverage service — and bathroom access — is more limited. “The best defense is a good offense,” says board-certified dermatologist Azadeh Shirazi, MD . “Considering the low humidity of airplane cabins, it’s best to load up on skin hydration before your flight.” That means imbibing extra fluids and applying moisturizing skin products to boost hydration, so you’re covering your bases inside and out. “ Skin flooding is a technique inspired by K-beauty where, after cleansing, you apply a hydrating toner or spray, followed by a water-based serum, and finish off by applying a moisturizer with sunscreen to seal in the hydration,” adds Dr. Shirazi.

While I love the intensely hydrating aspect of sheet masks, wearing one in public takes a certain shamelessness. So, while I sported one on the airplane, if you’d prefer to save the horror movie vibes of a full sheet mask for a pre-flight ritual, apply one either at home before your trip or at a discreet airport lounge before boarding. The Vitabrid C12 Dual Mask is my go-to; it contains hyaluronic acid and works in 10 to 20 minutes to plump the skin with moisture. It comes completely saturated with serum, so applying it over a sink can help cut down on the mess.

Board-certified cosmetic dermatologist Michele Green, MD , also recommends adding sunscreen to your in-flight skin-care routine. “The sun’s UV rays can be even more powerful when flying as you are closer to the ozone layer. Thus, sunscreen is vital to protecting your skin from harmful UV radiation that can increase your risk of developing skin cancer or premature aging signs,” says Dr. Green.

The changes in cabin pressure — along with salty in-flight snacks and prolonged sitting — can cause bloating and puffiness. Keep your lymphatic system moving by getting up and stretching every hour. This may be a daunting prospect on a red-eye flight, but if you can maintain it for the hours you are awake, you can still prioritize sleep while maintaining circulation. While you’re up, take the opportunity to drink a bottle of water and reapply moisturizer.

Bloating from water retention can be combated by hydrating with vitamin-rich snacks, like fruits and vegetables, and magnesium-filled almonds. Where possible, try to avoid salty foods, alcohol, and caffeine, which can further dehydrate you.

Chloë Ward , a functional diagnostic nutrition practitioner and certified integrative nutrition health coach, advises consuming protein-rich snacks to stabilize blood sugar levels. She also suggests “incorporating anti-inflammatory foods like turmeric and ginger to reduce post-flight bloating and discomfort.”

Wearing compression socks can also minimize swelling. While they may not be as appealing as your favorite fuzzy slippers, they’ll prevent swollen ankles and increase circulation.

Use a layover to reap the benefits of body movement. Even if it’s just a fast-paced walk around the terminal, mobilizing your body will help decrease fluid retention. If you have a longer layover, research a more immersive activity source in the area. During my seven-and-a-half-hour layover at JFK airport in NYC, I went to the on-site TWA hotel for a long swim in the heated rooftop pool. Swimming is ideal for stretching the entire body, as is yoga (which can be done in any quiet corner of the airport).

Just as the low humidity on the airplane is dehydrating for your skin, it can also dry out your hair. If possible, use a deep conditioner before your trip. I love the Michael Christopher Calm Down Treatment for my dry hair so it's soft and hydrated prior to flying.

My naturally wavy hair typically becomes a mess during a long flight, so I tried the viral TikTok sock curls method to style my hair on the airplane. I love anything lazy girl beauty, so I was stoked to have these curls work well during my second red-eye flight. I chose to place the wraps on the side of my head, rather than the top and back, which meant less volume but more waves. It was my first time trying the trend and I accidentally rolled one side much looser than the other; lesson learned — rework the sock curls until they are even before going to sleep.

It isn’t always easy to sleep on flights, but coming prepared can help you nod off, giving your body time to repair itself. A silk eye mask to block out the light is gentle on the skin, and a neck pillow can help maintain your alignment and minimize tension. Personally, I avoid sleeping pills (which can be dehydrating, among other side effects) while flying and use CBD instead. The laws around CBD are constantly changing (the TSA allows for CBD with less than .3% THC , but when flying internationally, the guidelines are less clear), so I opt for a blend with zero THC like Joy Organics Tranquil Mint Tincture .

On my long-haul flight, I slathered on the BluZen Wellness vanilla shea butter lip mask before I went to sleep, and applied Luzern Force de Vie Creme Lux to my face. When I woke up, I was pleasantly surprised at how soft my skin felt. Still, next time I fly, I’m planning to opt for the Creme Intensive formula for a richer formulation.

After waking, keep eye wipes, like the Biotrue Micellar Eyelid Cleansing Wipes, handy. They're easy to grab and will gently and thoroughly clean your eye area. I also tried a new-to-me eye drop, the LUMIFY Redness Reliever, which made my always-dry eyes feel more comfortable and removed the redness. To combat dark circles, I rolled on the Back to Earth Skin Glow Eye Cream with coffee extract (caffeine can help decrease redness and puffiness).

At the end of the flight, brush your teeth, apply deodorant, and change into fresh clothes. It will help you reset, feel less groggy, and be ready to take on the next stage of your journey. Dust on some dry shampoo to soak up oil and pump up your volume (I like a non-aerosol powder like Billie Floof for travel). Sometimes, I apply makeup before landing as well, but after 30 hours of pamper time/plane time — I didn't feel like I needed it!

travel beauty secrets

Whether you’re carry-on for life or have zero shame about checking a bag, traveling means making some tough beauty cuts. Be it for TSA requirements, limited real estate, or the pursuit of a more simplified routine, everyday beauty staples aren’t always practical for on-the-go use. (My favorite foundation, for example, is tragically packaged in a delicate glass bottle.) In lieu of our day-to-day favorites, Byrdie editors opt for multipurpose products, stick formulas, and luxurious hydrators when we’re traveling for work or pleasure. Discover our favorites ahead, from multiuse sticks to acne-fighting mists.

There's nothing like getting off a plane and beelining for the bathroom to give your skin a good, deep clean. Airplane air really makes my skin so, so sad. Sturm's Enzyme Cleanser is my must-have for travel because it allows for a little grit and gentle exfoliation when my face needs it most. When mixed with water, the fine-powder transforms into a super soft, enzyme-filled foam (there's some vitamin C in there too). It sloughs off dead and dry skin, free radicals like pollution and other grime from the travel day, and leaves your skin feeling incredibly soft, fresh, and reset. I focus a massage along my nose and chin (where I have the most congestion) and it's a godsend on blackheads.

When I travel, I need a good silk scrunchie. It's an easy, cute way to slick back wet hair when I don't have much time to get ready, it allows me to (secretly mask all day), and it keeps my hair out of my face as I'm getting dressed and applying makeup. Overall, it's both incredibly practical and beautiful in equal measure. This one from Ceremonia is my absolute favorite (the silk scrunchie comes in a set with an organza option as well, which I love for added fanciness). It's the biggest, the most luscious, and really makes me look like I have my life together.

I am absolutely in love with this product. To put it into context, the formula went viral on TikTok before it even launched. This is a true skincare-makeup hybrid. Upon first application, my skin looked warm and sculpted . I use it to contour and lift (along my cheekbones and jaw bone) and then apply to the eyes for depth. It's a beautiful, bronze-y formula and also includes centella asiatica (my favorite for its soothing properties), niacinamide, and hyaluronic acid.

It can be difficult for me to doze off on plane rides, so I make sure to save these Self-Heating Warm Compresses for every flight. I got introduced to them because they soothed my eyes and sensitivity to light when I had a migraine. But now, migraine or not, bringing them with me on plane rides is a total game changer. The compress is more of an eye mask that comfortably goes over your ears and stays in place during a nap. They also heat up quickly and stay warm for around 30 minutes, which is more than enough time for me to be lulled to sleep.

If there’s only time to do one minute of makeup before boarding a flight, I’m grabbing this brow gel. Espressoh’s Hey Broh gel makes me feel put together with a few swipes. I’ve loved this brow gel for years to help me achieve a bold laminated effect, but it works just as well to slick my brows into place and keep them there for a natural yet polished look.

I have a ton of hair, and when I’m traveling, all I want to do is put it up. I’ve been reliant on these Large Slipsilk Scrunchies for years and I use them at least once a day no matter what. They are large enough that I can wrap the scrunchie around my hair twice but elastic enough that they’ll hold my hair in place with just one loop. Besides wearing my hair in an updo, I love using them to pineapple my hair at night under my bonnet to ensure my curls don’t get frizzy. Most importantly, opting for a scrunchie that doesn’t get caught on my curly 3C/4A hair or crease it has really decreased the amount of breakage and shedding I see.

Holly Rhue, associate editorial director

Brow products are something I use every single day. My routine typically consists of some kind of pigment product topped with a clear wax to hold my brows into a brushed-up position. But when I’m traveling, I love to go for the two-in-one with this new Benefit gel. It gives you all the pigment of a tinted brow gel, plus the sculpting, stay-all-day power of a gel or wax. It’s a nonnegotiable in my dopp kit.

I’m a terrible sleeper as is, so throw a plane ride, road trip, or time change into the mix, and my under-eyes are shot. So naturally, I never travel without eye gels. And while I love a heavily saturated, jelly-textured patch for my day-to-day, these SkinMedica gels are perfect for travel. They come individually wrapped with one set of patches per sachet, so there’s no dealing with heavy jars or tins. They’re also incredibly moisturizing without being soaking wet—you can easily use them on a plane or long car ride without dripping serum all over the place. That, and they actually adhere to your skin until you’re ready to remove them.

I’m nothing if not practical, so I’m never without this Vaseline stick on a trip. My skin gets extremely dry on flights , and I’ll use this handy stick for slugging pretty much anywhere—cuticles, under-eyes, mouth corners, you name it. I also use it as a lip balm, to slick back my hair, and as a body highlighter on my shoulders and collarbone. (It also comes in handy if you find a blister forming on your skin.) There are truly endless uses for Vaseline , and the stick design makes it easier to keep skin balanced and glowy while traveling.

Topicals Slick Salve Glossy Lip Balm: Topicals’ latest launch—the Slick Salve Glossy Lip Balm—has quickly become a beauty essential that goes everywhere with me. The minty lip treatment is infused with peptides and a tri-ceramide complex that combats fine lines, texture, and dryness. When I swipe this on, my lips feel incredibly soothed and moisturized. Not to mention that they’re left with a high-shine, glossy finish.

Biossance Squalane + Ectoin Overnight Rescue: Since I have dry skin, I incorporate intensely nourishing moisturizers into my morning and evening routines. Right now, the Biossance Squalane + Ectoin Overnight Rescue Deep Repair Treatment is the nighttime cream that’s always stashed in my dopp kit. The ultra-rich cream is formulated with ectoin to protect your skin from environmental aggressors, restoring magnesium and peptides, and hydrating squalane. After slathering this on at night, I wake up with skin that is noticeably plumper and more moisturized.

When traveling, I always want to bring products that make removing makeup and refreshing my skin a breeze. That’s why the mini version of Garnier’s SkinActive Micellar Cleansing Water is a staple in my toiletry bag. When I’m ready to wash my face, I saturate one of my SkinActive Micellar Cleansing Eco Pads and gently wipe it across my face, eyes, and lips. The beloved no-rinse micellar water effortlessly breaks down and removes all my makeup without leaving my skin feeling stripped.

I am a blush fiend and usually bring at least three options when I travel (even if it’s just overnight). That being said, this is always one of them. First of all, it’s a no-brainer for packing since it’s so tiny and can easily be applied without a brush. It’s the perfect peachy-pink shade that I can build up as much as I want, and the glowy formula glides on without feeling heavy or greasy. I always keep it in my shoulder bag during a flight since it’s the perfect pick-me-up after travel even if I’m not wearing any other makeup.

I’m very unfussy with my hair and will happily use whatever shampoo and conditioner the hotel has on hand. This, however, is the one thing I can’t go without. A pump or two on wet or dry hair is all I need for smooth, frizz-free hair that looks and smells incredible. Most importantly, it helps coax my nearly wavy hair into a passable mermaid texture that eliminates the need for any other styling.

Good complexion products top my packing list, and I haven’t stopped using this concealer since I tested it a few months ago. It’s so creamy and truly foolproof to apply, and the satiny finish looks beautiful on both under-eyes and pimples. It can also be used as a foundation in a pinch, which is great if you’re an overpacker like I am. This is another one I keep on hand as a quick refresh after a flight.

I hate fussing with lots of tools and brushes when I travel, so whenever possible, I only bring one: a beauty sponge. That means sticking to makeup products that blend well with a sponge or fingers. For that reason, I usually travel with a few of the Nudies Cream Blushes from Nudestix—they come with a little brush but blend well with your fingertips too.

On that no-tools, no-problems note, I’ve been sticking to Ciele Cosmetics’ Tint & Protect SPF 50+ as my on-the-go base. It’s another product that blends effortlessly, and a little bit goes a long way for coverage. I usually just blend out a few drops with my fingers, and then go over it with a damp sponge to even things out. I also love that it contains SPF 50+; I am a firm believer in never relying on makeup alone for sunscreen, so I do apply some underneath, but as far as I’m concerned, you can never have too much protection.

I can’t possibly discuss my travel routine without shouting out Eadem’s Milk Marvel. Since it contains vitamin C and niacinamide, it really streamlines my skincare routine; it’s usually the only product I’ll apply between my face wash and sunscreen when I’m out of town. I brought the brand’s Bare-Skin Confidence Mini Travel Set home for the holidays and am so happy I did; the moisturizer is lightweight and silky, and the cleansing balm is great for days when I went for lighter-coverage makeup or just SPF.

Growing up, it didn’t matter where we stayed or went—I only wanted to know if the hotel had a pool or an ocean nearby. The urge to swim has yet to leave me, meaning my hair ends up a tangled mess by dinnertime on most trips. Ouais Leave In Conditioner has saved me multiple times, helping me tackle the toughest knots pre-shower and protecting my hair from heat post-wash. If I don’t have time for heat styling, I’ll use it to slick back my hair into a flyaway-free low bun. It’s truly the most versatile hair product in my bag.

I swear my skin knows where we are the second I arrive at an airport. Before we even hit the tarmac, I’m battling to keep my skin moisturized, but my lips are the worst offender by far. Since dry, chapped lips are not on the itinerary, I use Ilia’s Lip Wrap Reviving Balm. Formulated with hyaluronic acid and salicornia (aka sea succulent), this lightweight balm restores the skin barrier of your lips over time while imparting a gorgeous, plump shine with just one swipe. Plus, for those with flight anxiety like me, the soothing lavender and chamomile scent provides a bonus dose of calming aromatherapy.

There’s nothing worse than arriving at your destination only to find that the makeup bag you thought you had packed perfectly has eye shadow all over, thanks to a broken powder eye shadow palette. Trust and believe that cream or liquid is the best formulation to bring abroad. I specifically love Rare Beauty’s All of the Above Weightless Eyeshadow Stick, as it’s buildable, blendable, and fadeproof. The shimmery, neutral shades are perfect for every aesthetic, and I love the fact that the packaging has a built-in sharpener.

Jasmine Phillips, social media editor

Edge control is truly the first product I always throw in my carry-on luggage. It keeps my edges laid and tames any flyaways I may have with slick-back styles. I particularly love this product because it can withstand all heat and humidity so I know my edges are laid while I lay on the beach. I don’t have to worry about any white residue or weird stickiness. It’s just a great-smelling product that I keep near and dear at all times.

Tower 28 SOS Rescue Spray is a skin saver at home, so I’m sure to pack it when I’m out of town. It keeps any redness or irritation at bay so my skin can look and feel its best. It’s super refreshing and hydrating, which is perfect after long days of exploring.

I love a two-in-one product just as much as I love anything from Ami Colé. The Lip + Blush Sticks add a nice wash of color to my skin and help me limit the amount of beauty products I need to get my desired look. It contains desert date oil, hibiscus flower extract, and baobab seed oil to hydrate and nurture the skin, so it’s a win-win.

Ali Webb, associate editor

As we all know, airport restrictions on liquids mean that packing a carry-on requires making some hard choices. A good powder makeup product can really change the game, and I’m obsessed with this Charlotte Tilbury palette, which includes two types of highlighters, a bronzer, and a blush all in one place. A few swipes on strategic areas like your cheekbones, Cupid’s bow, and inner corners of your eyes will have you glowing and contoured in no time, and I love how this allows me to keep having fun with makeup without sacrificing valuable liquid real estate.

No matter what beauty products you choose to pack for a trip, sunscreen is an absolute must. I’ve tried my fair share of formulas, and my absolute favorite is Supergoop’s Unseen Sunscreen, which goes on smooth and nongreasy with no white cast, features SPF 40 protection, and creates an ideal base for makeup (so you can leave the primer at home). I usually stock up on the largest size, but the mini is perfect for travel.

At any given time, I have two bottles of Bumble and Bumble Hairdresser’s Invisible Oil Primer: a full size, plus a mini to take with me on all my travels. I've found it to be an ideal hair product to pack because it serves so many purposes: It works as a heat protectant, makes my strands take to styling better, and includes a nourishing six-oil blend that can take the place of other leave-in products when I’m keeping it simple on the go. It’s color-safe and has smoothing properties, plus its UV protection will keep your strands happy and healthy if you’re headed somewhere sunny or spending time outside. This is truly my desert-island hair product.

Playa de Formentor Mallorca

What beauty essentials do you travel with?

“I love my whole Refy collection, but a few are essential for long-haul flights. The Refy Face Primer has a roller applicator, which is great for depuffing your face. I have about three Refy Lip Glosses in my bag at all times. It has the benefits of a lip balm but with a high-shine finish – something that belongs to every girl's bag. I cannot leave my house without my brows in place, so I will always have a Refy Brow Tint in my hand luggage. Also, I use the Jo Loves hand sanitiser every day, but it is absolutely essential when travelling.”

What place has inspired you the most?

“ New York ! Every time I visit, I meet so many talented creatives and leave feeling so inspired. Our first-ever billboard was in Times Square, and it still feels like a dream! To see Refy alongside brands I love, and in one of the most iconic places on earth was an amazing moment – I'll probably never get over it.”

Are there any beauty spots in other countries you really rate?

“When I'm in the US, I always pay a visit to The Next Big Thing stand in Sephora. They were the first retailer to support us over there, and I always love to support emerging brands.”

How do you cope with travelling so much for work?

“I'm super strict with my daily rituals and try to mimic my normal routine as much as possible when travelling. I start each day with my morning coffee, journalling and pilates, it helps keep me organised and sets me up perfectly for the day.”

What’s your on-flight routine?

“I make sure I have all my favourite podcasts downloaded and enough snacks to last the flight. Plus a non-negotiable two litres of water and my skincare routine before take off.”

What’s the first thing you do when you land somewhere new?

“I have been extremely lucky to travel to so many new places – the excitement never gets old when you visit somewhere for the first time! I normally drop my bags off at the hotel and go straight for a walk to explore my surroundings. Once I've had a look around, I head back to my hotel, freshen up and unpack my luggage .”

Where’s somewhere you’ve always wanted to go?

“My ideal holiday is somewhere I can completely unwind and shut off from the outside world. I really hope to visit the Maldives in the New Year! It's all over my Instagram. It just looks so peaceful.”

How do you maintain your wellness when you travel?

“I make sure I bring all my home comforts. I usually take my pilates equipment with me – it's so important for me to move my body every morning. Alongside my vitamins, skincare routine and five-minute journal, I even bring my Nespresso milk frother away with me – my morning coffee is very important.”

How do you overcome jet lag?

“This is a tough one; when I travel, I am always so excited to explore, so I tend to ignore any tiredness I might have. I do try to stick to my usual sleep schedule even though it can be difficult, but sticking to a routine is so important to me.”

Best TRAVEL BEAUTY Products

Choose multi-purpose products.

When packing efficiently for your next trip, you’ll want to keep things minimal. For this to work well, it’s important to use multi-purpose beauty products. These products can save space in your luggage and make your beauty routine as slick as can be. Look for products that can serve multiple functions, such as a tinted moisturizer with SPF , a lip and cheek stain , or a moisturizing balm that can be used on both your face and body. By choosing multi-purpose products, you can simplify your beauty routine and still look fabulous while traveling.

Don’t Forget Sunscreen

Sunscreen is a crucial beauty essential, especially when traveling to sunny destinations. Protecting your skin from harmful UV rays is essential for maintaining healthy and youthful-looking skin. Look for a travel-sized sunscreen that offers broad-spectrum protection and has a high SPF rating – SFF50 ideally! It’s also important to reapply sunscreen every few hours, especially if you’re spending a lot of time outdoors. Don’t forget to pack a travel-sized sunscreen in your bag and apply liberally on face, neck and hands to ensure you’re always protected, no matter where your travels take you.

Bring a Versatile Makeup Palette

Another way to save space in your make-up bag is by cleverly matching two to three eye, cheek and lip products for the ultimate summer glow. Pack a neutral eyeshadow duo that can be easily blended for both daytime and nighttime looks along with your favourite pencil and mascara – Victoria Beckhams four pocket pens go a long way to achieve a flawless appearance. This way, you can create a variety of makeup looks without having to pack multiple individual products. A versatile makeup palette is a must-have for any traveler who wants to look their best while on the go.

Traveling and hot climates can often leave your skin feeling dry and dehydrated. That’s why it’s so important to pack a hydrating face mask to give your skin a boost of moisture. Look for a travel-sized single use face mask that is packed with hydrating ingredients like hyaluronic acid or aloe vera. Applying a face mask during your flight or at the end of a long day of exploring can help replenish your skin’s moisture levels and leave you with a refreshed and glowing complexion. Don’t forget to follow up with a moisturizer to lock in the hydration and keep your skin looking its best throughout your trip.

Oily skin, red eyes, and greasy hair: That paints a pretty accurate picture of what many of us travelers look like when we step off the plane for vacation. On the return trip, add sunburn, exhaustion, and blisters.

Making sure you’re armed with the right travel beauty products might not seem like a trip-planning priority, but living out of a suitcase shouldn’t mean neglecting your skin and hair. It’s nearly impossible to keep up with your regular beauty routine when on the road, especially during days-long continent-crossing trips to the far side of the planet. But with the right assemblage of packable beauty products, you can maintain a fresh and bright appearance no matter where your travels might take you.

Travel Beauty Tips Experts Swear By

You don’t have to pack your entire medicine cabinet to maintain a beauty regimen on the road. These multiuse packable products are your best bets for keeping beauty pitfalls at bay while traveling. Here are travel beauty tips experts and other frequent travelers told us they swear by for all types of skin and hair, as well as the right products to use when traveling.

Before you even head out for vacation, stop to think for a few minutes about what beauty pitfalls may lie ahead for your specific trip. Will you face dry cabin air on a long overseas flight? Are you going to a sunny beach destination during long summer days? Will you be crossing multiple time zones?

Joanna Schlip , a celebrity makeup artist, says the most important thing travelers need to know is their skin. “There is no one fix-it-all for everybody … you have to know how you’re going to react.” And that means picking products you’re used to using and that work with your body. Dr. Joseph Kvedar, a board-certified dermatologist and Professor of Dermatology at Harvard Medical School says, “What I tell my patients is, it’s most important what feels good on your face and what you feel comfortable wearing, rather than a specific brand.”

Travel Beauty Tip: Pare Down Your Routine

Let’s face it: on travel days, the chances that your makeup is going to look as fresh on your arrival as it did when you began your trip are slim to none. The dry air and close quarters are just waiting to wreak havoc on your skin, not to mention the mascara smudges that tend to happen if you nod off. Instead, board the plane not sporting makeup, and wait until you reach your destination before applying makeup. At the very most, Irene Hatziantoniou and Mary Ditto, aestheticians and owners of North Coast Aesthetic Center, recommend wearing a tinted moisturizer instead of a heavy foundation, or a tinted lip balm instead of lipstick if you want a little color.

“Having a touch-up bag is key,” says Schlip. By packing a small, 3-1-1 compliant bag that you can pull out as soon as you arrive at your destination, you can head out on the town without missing a beat. Hatziantoniou and Ditto recommend including eye drops for red eyes. Schlip recommends combating oily skin with blotting papers , and to apply powder when you reach your destination. A little shimmer powder on your cheekbones can brighten up your complexion, and if your hair looks a little greasy, tap in some translucent powder or dry shampoo to absorb the oil. Other quick fixes to include are mini emery boards , nail polish remover wipes , and nail polish strips for broken nails; and moleskin for shoes that pinch and rub your feet to avoid blisters.

Put together a small carry-on kit comprised of a few key cosmetic items in a quart-sized zip-top bag. This kit should have everything you’ll need to freshen up before you land. The exact items to pack depend on your skin type and the kind of makeup you like to wear, but, generally, you’ll want to pack a cleanser or pre-moistened makeup-remover wipe (we like Olay 4-in-1 Daily Facial Cloths for Sensitive Skin and cut these in half to double the usage), a moisturizer , and whatever basic cosmetic essentials you think you might need.

Travel Beauty Tip: Wear Sunscreen

If you’re going to a hot, tropical destination, chances are you’re already packing the sunscreen, and with good reason. “The closer you get to the equator, the stronger the sun is and the shorter amount of time you can stay out [without getting] serious sun damage consequences,” says Kvedar. But your UV exposure might be happening while you’re still 30,000 feet above the ground. Kvedar notes that windows don’t block all UV rays, so “if you’re in a window seat on a long flight, and there’s a lot of sunshine, you could get a lot of exposure to UVA. The higher you go the more intense that is.”

In order to protect your skin from the damaging effects of the sun, Schlip recommends products with SPF already included. “Sunblock is hard to reapply, and most people, when they’ve done their makeup, they don’t think to reapply in the middle of the day. You feel like it’s going to take your makeup off.” But new technologies have allowed for SPF in powder form , from mass-market lines to department store products. “It’s awesome because it’s so easy to reapply a bronzer or powder,” she says.

There are also plenty of oil-free options that you can apply under makeup or mix with your favorite tinted moisturizer. Dr. Yadav pairs SPF 30 with noreva Exfoliac Tinted Anti-Imperfection treatment for a skin-benefiting concealer, and recommends Neutrogena’s Dry Touch sunscreen for a matte-finish SPF. If oily skin is more of a problem for you, Yadav suggests Avene’s Cleanance Expert cream , which exfoliates and reduces oil production.

Travel Beauty Tip: Oils Can Be Your Friend

For those with dryness issues, winter travel can be harsh on hair and skin. Don’t be afraid of oils, which do wonders and pack small. Skip clunky moisturizer and hair treatment bottles in favor of a travel-sized dry oil. A dry oil is a non-greasy oil that hair and skin can easily soak up without leaving residue behind—oils that are classified as dry include argan, jojoba, and rosehip seed.

SmarterTravel’s Shannon McMahon always packs a small bottle of rosehip oil, which has brightening and rejuvenating benefits for skin and goes a long way in dry hair. Rub in a few drops where you need it, and apply to the face and neck before bed every night for anti-aging benefits. It’s effective at removing makeup if you use a little bit extra and wipe the excess away with a tissue, and it’s also great for men as a beard oil.

Organic Rosehip Seed Oil

Travel Beauty Tip: Combating Jet-Lag

It’s no secret that being rested reflects in the way you look. “Sleep is critical to your appearance,” according to Kvedar, “and there’s no better way to mess up your sleep than crossing time zones.” When you’re trying to adjust to a new locale, avoid drinking caffeine after 2:00 p.m. local time and forgo heavy alcohol use. Combined with good hydration, staying rested will also help you to prevent jetlag . Also, if you wear contacts, consider wearing your glasses while you travel so you can take a  quick nap  without irritating your eyes or risking an eye infection.

Maybe you have a favorite eye cream that you swear by. If you’ve found a product that works for your skin, invest in a travel-sized version, ask for a sample from Sephora or your department store’s makeup counter, or pour some into a tiny, packable pot. To de-puff your eyes while on the plane, scoop some ice out of a cup of water, wrap the ice in a napkin, and hold it on your eyes. Anything chilled, whether it’s a refrigerated face cream, ice, or a cold cucumber slice, will shrink swollen tissue and aid in reducing inflammation of the eyes.

You can also bring a packable or single-use mask to restore what your skin loses on a dry flight or to calm irritated skin after days of traveling. SmarterTravel’s Ashley Rossi recommends these 20 , including packable no-rinse versions like 100% PURE Bright Eyes Mask.

Travel beauty experts sing the praises of spring-water mist as soothing jet-lag relief. And it’s an oil-free option for travelers with sensitive or oily skin. Travel and lifestyle writer Jeanette Zinno says, “Travel-size facial mists are perfect for refreshing after a long dry plane ride or to freshen up after a day of exploring a new country.” She recommends La Roche-Posay Thermal Spring Water Face Mist . Hydration and cleansing relief will help you leave the plane feeling fresh-faced.

Bright Eyes Mask

Travel Beauty Tip: Find Products That Do Double Duty

The trick to including everything you’re used to using, according to Schlip, is to choose items that have multiple uses. For example, pick a lip tint that is also a blush or eye shadow, or a cleanser that also tones and moisturizes. “If you can find a bronzer that can go as an eye shadow and SPF, perfect, slam dunk,” says Schlip. Brands like Dr. Bronner’s and Thayers offer products that can be used in several different ways, from shampoo to shaving cream, making them favorites among travelers. And for makeup, beauty brand Alleyoop makes countless “double-duty” products like a multi-use face palette , eyeshadow sticks , mini-lip colors , a 4-in-1 makeup brush , and even a 4-in-1 makeup pen .

One of the most versatile and inexpensive travel beauty products gaining steam these days is micellar water—or oil molecules suspended in soft water. It doubles as a makeup remover and cleansing toner, and requires no rinsing so it’s perfect for on-the-go use. Cosmetic dermatologist Dr. Sonam Yadav swears by the same micellar water as SmarterTravel’s Ashley Rossi: Bioderma Sensibio H20 . “I am obsessed with Bioderma’s Sensibo H20 in travel-size,” Rossi says. “Two dabs on a cotton ball will leave your skin feeling refreshed and clean, and you can actually see the dirt and makeup removed.”

Travel Beauty Tip: Pack Smart

Packing right is just as important as the specific travel beauty products you’re packing. SmarterTravel’s Christine Sarkis recommends using multi-use containers to stash all your necessities. “I use contact-lens cases to hold smaller amounts of face moisturizer and sunscreen for shorter trips,” Sarkis says. “It helps me maximize my 3-1-1 toiletries bag, since it takes up only a small amount of room.”

If you’re bringing a bag of toiletries on the airplane, make sure you know what’s allowed—and what’s not. Things you should pack in your checked bag include liquids— including but not limited to gel deodorants, toothpaste, perfume, and liquid makeup—in quantities of 3.4 ounces or more. According to TSA guidelines , you can pack lipsticks , disposable razors , cuticle cutters , eyelash curlers , nail clippers , tweezers and small toiletry scissors (less than four inches) in your carry-on.

Another useful travel beauty packing tip: powders. Not only are they 3-1-1 compliant (so you can take as many as you like in your carry-on), but they’re also practical in other ways. “Powder not only gives you coverage, but it also gives you SPF protection and it can absorb excess oil,” Schlip says. Be sure to pick a product that is buildable, like a compact powder, so that you can reapply. Before leaving the terminal, you can make a quick stop in the restroom to touch up with powder foundation, bronzer, and blush. Other products that come in powder form include dry shampoo and sunscreen . Look towards the brand Subtl Beauty , which makes stackable makeup sets.

Relying on free hotel amenities for your travel beauty routine can save you a lot of packing space, but be sure to bring necessities hotels might skimp on. “I’ve been noticing more hotels only provide shampoo or a terrible shampoo/conditioner hybrid these days,” SmarterTravel’s Caroline Morse Teel says. “I hate being caught without it, so I refill one of these travel bottles with my favorite conditioner just in case.”

Travel Beauty Tip: Don’t Forget About Your Physical Health

After all, beauty comes from within. The best way to keep your skin soft and healthy is by staying hydrated—and it’s even more important when you take to the skies—so pack a water bottle . Sure, flight attendants hand out water on the plane, but usually it comes in those little plastic cups or mini bottles, and it’s not as if the economy-class beverage service arrives at your beck and call. The easy solution is to pack a squishy, foldable, reusable Vapur Anti-Bottle and to fill it with water after you’ve passed through security. The BPA-free container holds 18 ounces of liquid. Kvedar says that people don’t think enough about the dehydration they will face on airplanes. It’s a good idea to drink eight glasses of water the day before your trip, and avoid caffeine and alcohol.

Wash your hands with soap and water, especially before you apply makeup. Not only will this help you  avoid getting sick on vacation , but it’ll also keep your skin looking fresh and breakout-free. And while this tip may seem basic, it can often be a challenge to find a reasonably clean sink with soap in places like buses, subways, and at germy tourist attractions . For those moments, make sure you have a small bottle of hand sanitizer readily available. Take the time to disinfect your airplane seat as soon as you sit down and avoid touching your face as much as possible.

70 Travel Hacks That Will Change Your Travel Game Forever

airplane flying at sunset

With 57 countries under my belt and more than a decade of traveling regularly, I think it’s safe to say that I’m an expert in the field. I’ve made every mistake you could imagine—missed flights, lost baggage, exploding hair irons—but with each disastrous experience, I’ve grown a little bit wiser, and a LOT savvier when it comes to traveling like a seasoned pro.

These travel hacks for flying, packing, saving money, getting hotel upgrades and more are the secrets I swear by. I hope they’ll help make your next trip pleasurable, memorable, and stress-free.

70 Travel Hacks That Will Blow Your Mind

1. use my “contact lens case” hack for makeup and skincare products ..

This is one of my best space saving packing hacks. People tend to take up unnecessary room in their toiletry bags by bringing full-sized products.

Here’s the trick: put your foundation, moisturizer, eye cream , and any other liquid products into contact lens cases. Every inch counts!

2. Be strategic in your seat selection when booking a flight.

There’s nothing worse than getting stuck in a seat that doesn’t recline, or ending up in a row next to the lavatory with people hovering over you for the entire flight. I avoid these kind of mishaps by checking SeatGuru before I choose my seat on flights.

Occasionally, I’ll even choose a flight based on the type of plane that SeatGuru tells me I’ll be flying on. The website and app shows you photos of the plane’s interior so you’ll know in advance whether you’re booking an outdated 747, or a brand spanking new plane.

Plus, it gives you warnings about seats that have potential issues, like limited recline or a misaligned window.

3. Pack your own DIY amenity kit for long-haul flights.

I loooove the amenity kits that you get when you fly First or Business, but since I don’t always have that luxury, I decided to start making my own. My “DIY kit” stays in my carry-on bag at all times, and includes a toothbrush and toothpaste, deodorant, sheet masks, moisturizer, hand cream, eye masks , lip balm, and socks.

4. Avoid cankles by wearing compression socks.

They’re basically Spanx for your calves and feet, because feeling swollen after a long-haul flight is the WORST.

travel hacks compression socks

5. Consider choosing an “alternate destination” when you search.

If the city you’re flying in or out of isn’t a main hub, consider flying into a bigger city and connecting or finding a flight (or other mode of transportation) out of that city.

Not only will you save money, but you have the potential to earn more mileage points.

6. Download the Google Translate app to help with language barriers.

You can use it to take photos of text in another language, and it will translate the words in real time. (I have a separate blog post featuring the best travel apps for savvy jetsetters , which you should check out as well!)

7. Use packing cubes.

best packing cubes for long trips

Another space saving packing hack that I swear by? Packing cubes! I truthfully thought these were a scam until I tried them out for myself.

They not only compress your items to give you additional space, but they also help keep you organized—I use a small one for socks and underwear, a medium-sized one for tops, another medium-sized one for comfortable walking shoes and sneakers , and a large one for jeans , pants, and dresses.

8. Look out for price errors.

Often times, there will be glitches on airline or third party sites that offer a ridiculous low fare. Sign up to these sites to keep an eye on them. But know that you will have to act quick, as these companies will typically fix the fare as soon as they catch it. Here are some great resources to keep an eye on for low fare deals.

* Bonus Tip: Fill your social media with these sleuths by following them on Instagram and Twitter!

9. Take advantage of generous credit card offers.

capital one venture card

The greatest travel hack of all time? Credit cards and points. Open up a credit card that has a sign-up bonus (assuming you can be responsible enough to pay your bills!), and transfer the points to an airline for a pricey international flight.

Check out my full step-by-step guide to using points and miles for free travel if you haven’t already!

10. Be strategic with flight cancellations.

If you book a nonrefundable ticket and your plans change or you know you won’t be traveling on that flight—do not cancel the ticket until the last possible moment.

Or…just don’t show up. Here’s why: in the rare case that there’s a flight cancellation or schedule change, your nonrefundable ticket could entitle you to a credit or refund. Had you cancelled the ticket, you wouldn’t be entitled to anything.

11. Learn how to avoid long airport security lines.

tsa precheck travel hack

TSA-precheck, Global Traveler, and Clear have been an absolute gamechanger for me, and if you travel more than a few times a year, they are absolutely something worth investing in. If you’re not familiar:

  • TSA Precheck enables you to use a separate line for domestic (US) flights, and you won’t be required to take off your shoes or take out your laptop.
  • Global Traveler is for international flights and (as far as I know) is for the US only. When you’re returning to the US, you use a machine that scans your passport rather than having to wait in line at customs.
  • Clear lets you scan your fingertips at security and then get escorted to the front of line at airports where it is offered.

12. Take a hydration multiplier for long flights.

liquid iv hydration packets

While everyone will tell you to “drink as much water as possible” and “try to stay hydrated” on a long-haul flights, the reality is that if you’re drinking a liter of water on a plane, you’re going to find yourself getting up to go to the bathroom repeatedly.

My hack for this is to use Liquid IV. It’s a “hydration multiplier” that hydrates you 2-3 times faster than water alone. You pour the little packet of powder into your water bottle, shake it up, and then drink.

It tastes pretty similar to Gatorade (the lemon/lime is my preferred flavor) and will keep you hydrated without sending you to use the restroom every 30 seconds.

13. Keep track of itinerary ideas in Google Docs.

I use Google Docs for all of my itineraries—especially when I’m planning a girls trip and there are multiple people involved. I’ll share the link with everyone I’m traveling with to make it more collaborative. It’s also where I keep a running list of recommendations from people for the destination that I’m visiting.

14. Challenge yourself not to check a bag.

Avoid lost baggage nightmares by packing carry-on only for trips under a week. In need of luggage that actually fits a lot of stuff? Here’s a list of the best carry-on bags that help save space with packing.

15. Order a “special meal” in advance of a long-haul flight.

special meal travel hacks

Most major airlines will offer the option to order a special meal when you book your flight—these include vegetarian, gluten-free, dairy-free, kosher, vegan, low fat, and sometimes even low sodium options.

People who place orders for “special meals” will always get served first, so if you’re hoping to catch some z’s on the flight, you’ll have more time to sleep while everyone else is waiting for their food to arrive.

16. Save local currency from the country you’re visiting as a souvenir.

My husband and I started doing this many years ago, and now we have what we jokingly call a “world bank” at home. It’s a cool alternative to buying a dumb keychain or t-shirt you’ll never wear.

17. Create a framed collage of foreign currency from your trips after you get home.

foreign currency travel hack

I often find foreign currency to be incredibly beautiful. We’ve taken some of the best-looking bills from various places we’ve visited, and framed them.

18. Do the same with hotel room keys, airline tickets, and baggage tags.

You can use a place like Framebridge to arrange and frame them for you—they’ll even send you a pre-paid envelope to mail in your items.

19. Talk to taxi drivers.

Often, a simple taxi ride from the airport to your hotel will turn into an impromptu city tour if you ask the right questions.

20. Build your itinerary using Go ogle Maps Trip Planner.

google maps trip planner

This might be the greatest travel hack of all time. Did you know that there’s a FREE tool within Google Maps that you can use to create an entire itinerary for your next trip? It’s called Google Maps Trip Planner and it’s incredible.

21. Don’t exchange money at the airport.

Wait and go to an ATM near your hotel for better exchange rates.

22. Take advantage of layovers as often as possible.

Sometimes, I’ll even choose flights with 12+ hour layovers as a way to see another city for a day.

23. Never miss another photo opp.

Take photos in “burst” mode so you don’t need to worry about missing the shot.

burst mode iphone

24. Carry a photocopy of your passport in your wallet.

Just in case.

25. Speaking of wallets… invest in a good travel wallet.

Trying to keep track of boarding passes, passport photocopies, foreign currency, and receipts can get a bit messy if you’re trying to stuff everything into your regular, everyday wallet.

The best way to stay organized while you’re heading out of town is to use an inexpensive but chic travel wallet that has additional compartments for travel-related items.

best travel wallet

26. Use a travel agent or tour operator for special trips or multi-city itineraries.

They can often get you better rates and preferential treatment at hotels.

27. Become a points and miles pro.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again—I’ve learned everything I know about points, miles, and travel hacks from my friend Brian Kelly, aka The Points Guy . Browse through his site for all the secrets.

28. Easily share photos with friends/family.

Start a shared album with your the people you’re traveling with at the beginning of a trip, so you’re able to easily exchange photos.

29. Get the experience of a luxury hotel without staying at one.

Dying to stay at a fancy hotel but can’t afford the nightly rate? Pop in to the lobby bar for drinks instead.

30. Plan your trip during “shoulder season” to take advantage of better hotel rates and less crowds.

Shoulder season = the period between high and low season, when the weather is still great but the destination is less busy. In places like Positano , Santorini , and Mykonos for example, shoulder season is generally April through the middle of June, and September through October.

le sireneuse positano

31. Avoid jetlag by getting onto the local time zone as soon as you board the plane.

If it’s technically morning in the destination you’re going to when you board the plane, do NOT go to sleep—even if it’s midnight where you’re leaving from. If you work on adjusting to the time zone while on the flight, you’ll have a better chance of battling jet lag when you arrive.

32. Hire a local guide during the first day of your trip in a foreign city.

It’ll help you get the lay of the land. Then ask your guide for non-touristy recommendations to hit up during the rest of your trip. Also: if you’re traveling with a big group, DEFINITELY hire a guide. It takes the pressure off of one person being put in charge of the itinerary.

One of the best things I’ve ever done was hire a guide for my five-day trip to Tokyo since I wanted to see as many things as I could in a short period of time.

33. Use a sheet mask on long flights to replenish the moisture back into your skin.

I love using these sheet masks on the plane. Instead of looking haggard when you land, your skin looks super glowy and fresh.

dr jart sheet mask

34. Hire a passport/visa expediting service if you’re in a pinch.

I used a company called “It’s Easy” to renew my passport when I was super tight on time, and they were able to get it to me within a few days.

35. Keep a “packing checklist” in your phone.

You can refer back to it every time you’re heading out of town. I have an example of my travel packing checklist here .

36. Always keep your boarding pass.

I usually keep mine until I see that my miles have posted on my frequent flyer account—if you end up having to claim missing miles from your airline, you’ll need to have your ticket number and confirmation number as a reference. Which leads me to my next point…

37. Create a frequent flyer account on every airline you travel with.

There’s no reason not to. If you don’t you’ll be missing out on valuable miles that could potentially be put toward your next trip. I personally have FF account with: American, Delta, JetBlue, United, Cathay Pacific/Asia Miles, British Airways/Avios.

38. Keep your iPhone photos organized.

iphone photo album

Save all of your favorite trip photos into an album in iPhoto so that you can find them quickly.

39. Turn your travel photos into cool animations using free apps.

One of my favorite ways to jazz up my photos following a trip is by using apps like KiraKira and Enlight Pixeloop. (For example, I have a little tutorial that shows you how to add falling snow to your photos in 30 seconds.)

add snow to photos

40. Use a pants hanger to ensure blinds stay closed over night.

There’s nothing worse than waking up at the crack of dawn on vacation because of a small gap in the hotel drapes. I avoid this by using a hanger with trouser clips to secure the two window shades together.

41. To find cheap flights, consider looking beyond the obvious sites like Kayak and Expedia.

If you set the tab or filter to “everywhere” or “anywhere” and are flexible with your dates and travel time, you can find really inexpensive flights and even earn extra miles if you fly an extra leg.

A few of the best “deals” sites are:

  • Sky Scanner

42. Always ask for an upgrade.

hotel room upgrade travel hack

Unless you’re on an unlimited budget or celebrating a special occasion, never book the best room at a hotel—but always ask for an upgrade. I did this on a recent trip to Maui , as well as in the Maldives and St Barths , and totally lucked out!

Make sure to join the hotel’s loyalty program before arriving (they’re free), since they usually honor those requests for members as long as a higher room category is available.

43. Sometimes, the budget airlines have even cheaper flights on their sites.

Also, if you sign up for their newsletter and loyalty clubs, you get added perks and insider info. A few that comes to mind are Norwegian, Frontier, Southwest, and Spirit.

44. Be a “country counter.”

Download the “Been” app to keep track of the countries and states you’ve visited.

been travel app to count countries

45. Get a more authentic “local” experience with your accommodation.

Using sites like Air BnB, VRBO, Booking and others gives you the opportunity to live more locally and at a significantly discounted rate. In fact, sometimes the house share experience is more personalized and luxurious.

46. Book a private room at a hostel to save money.

If hostels are an option (check HostelWorld.com), you can book private rooms for a really cheap rate. This is a great way to 1) save money 2) meet new people (perhaps people you could room with in another country on future trips.)

47. Always have a back-up power source.

Charge an external battery before you travel, and have it with you on the plane in case the seats don’t have outlets.

48. Compare flight prices using Airfare Matrix.

AirFare Matrix is something travel agents use. It is a Google tool and allows you to do some great price comparison without the third party interjection (that can sometimes cause you to pay more if you’re not searching in an incognito browser).

You can’t book directly from the site, but can use the codes as a source to get the cheapest price when you call an agent, or even the airline.

49. Try toggling to a different “home” country when searching for flights to get cheaper rates.

If you’re looking to fly a specific airline, set your country (usually in the top right hand corner or in the website’s footer) to one that has a good FX rate (of the countries available, of course).

This will allow you to view and purchase the flights in another currency, and potentially save big! It will take some time and some trial and error, but if you have the time, it’s worth it!

50. Mark your bag fragile.

It’ll be handled properly and make it to the top of the pile, ensuring your luggage comes out in the first batch!

fragile bag sticker luggage

51. Before you pay for an upgraded cabin, see if the flight is full.

If not, put yourself on the upgrade list as soon as you can. Also, offering to get bumped from a flight and wait for the next flight could give you leverage to negotiate a better seat (and maybe even money or points).

52. Use FourSquare for Wifi.

You can find wifi passwords on FourSquare for restaurants, cafes and other places (just be careful, obviously, as not all of these are secure.)

53. Turn on “Private Browser” when searching for flights.

Prices do, in fact, fluctuate based on the cookies in your web browser and how many searches you’ve performed for a specific destination. Which is why searching for flights in a private browser (also known as “incognito mode”) is an absolute must.

If you’re using Google Chrome, you can enable Incognito mode by hitting Command + SHIFT + N.

If you’re using Firefox or IE, you can enable a private browser by hitting COMMAND + SHIFT + P.

54. Bring an oversize scarf on the plane that doubles as a blanket.

Then wear it as a chic cape during your trip.

travel beauty secrets

55. Save on parking by pairing up with a local.

Garage Pointer is a website that connects you with people who own parking spaces and are willing to rent them (temporarily) to visitors. As of now Garage Pointer is only available in the U.S.

56. Rent a car…from a local.

Ready for the best car travel hack? Look into whether or not Turo is available in your destination. The app and website connects you with people who own cars and are willing to rent them out for a fee that is (usually) much less than traditional car rental.

57. Overwhelmed with what to pack? There’s an app for that.

PackPoint helps you determine what to pack based on where you are going and the length of your trip. It checks the weather in your upcoming destination and then provides a detailed packing list for you. (I would also recommend using my “what to wear” guide if you’re packing for trip to Europe in the winter .)

58. Use a service to ship your clothes ahead of your trip.

Sure, this might not be for everyone, but did you know there was a service that stores, packs, ships and cleans your clothes prior to trips? It’s a company called DUFL . While it’s definitely targeted to a very specific market, DUFL is an incredible concept.

You send them a capsule wardrobe (consisting of clothes you need for every trip, like business travel), and they’ll store the clothes in a “virtual closet,” which you can access through the app prior to your departure. They then send the clothes to your hotel ahead of your arrival, and collect them to dry clean and store when you leave.

59. Use FlightAware to track your flights.

flight aware flight tracking app

The website and app allows you to track your flight (or the flights of loved ones) in real time. It’ll also keep you up to date on important info, like whether the incoming flight is delayed, or if the flight had to be rerouted for any reason.

60. Invest in a good adapter/plug converter.

I like this one because it works in all countries, and also has USB ports.

61. Book tours and experiences through AirBnB.

Did you know that Airbnb can be a great resource for things other than accommodations? Over the past few years, the company has expanded to include incredible local experiences and tours.

62. Wear a travel outfit that looks super chic—but it secretly comfortable.

travel outfits

I have an entire blog post dedicated to this (linked above!) but in a nutshell, I’m a big fan of looking put together when I travel. However, I also wouldn’t be caught dead wearing jeans on a long flight.

There are a few little tricks I use to turn otherwise sloppy outfits into something that you’d be confident walking into a luxury hotel wearing.

The most important thing? A lightweight fringed scarf (which doubles as a blanket mid-flight) and a leather or denim jacket.

63. Invest in a great pair of noise-cancelling headphones.

bose 700 noise cancelling headphones

We’ve all been stuck next to a screaming child or chronic sniffler on long flights, and the experience can truly get your trip started off on the wrong foot.

I truly can not tell you how much of a game-changer noise-cancelling headphones are. While everyone else around you is having a meltdown over not being able to sleep or concentrate, you’ll be in your own little zen world.

Pro tip : if you don’t want to spring for the fanciest new technology, buy older or discontinued models of Bose headphones on Amazon for a fraction of the price for latest models.

64. Leverage special occasions for perks.

Celebrating a big anniversary or planning a trip for your honeymoon ? Be sure to let the hotel know in advance. When my husband and I went to Thailand and the Maldives for our honeymoon, we mentioned it to each property that we booked, and ended up with upgrades, bottles of champagne sent to the room, and other extra special perks from hotel staff.

65. Use your h otel’s shower cap to protect your toiletries from exploding.

Nervous about your liquids exploding in your toiletry bag on the flight home? Wrap them in the shower cap provided to you in the room. And if you don’t have a shower cap: use the plastic liner that comes with your ice bucket.

66. Download the Revolut app.

The popular European banking app recently launched in the U.S., and it allows users to exchange currencies from 55,000+ surcharge-free ATMs nationwide.

67. Seek itinerary inspiration through social media.

Use Instagram to inspire your itinerary. Browse through hashtags and geotags to see where people took gorgeous photos—and then go to those places! Alternatively, you can google things like “ The Best Instagram Spots in NYC ” or “ The Most Instagrammable Places in London ” for fun ideas.

instagram photo inspiration

68. Use AirHelp to get compensated for flight delays or cancelled flights.

We’ve all been there: you miss a connection because of a delayed flight, or your flight get inexplicably cancelled, and you know that the airline has to owe you some kind of compensation.

The problem is that actually getting what you’re owed can be a logistical nightmare that involves long wait times, endless phone calls, and unanswered emails. AirHelp essentially plays the middleman by acting on your behalf.

They do charge a fee (which is a percentage of what you’re ultimately compensated) but as someone who has used the service successfully, I can say that it is VERY much worth saving you the headache.

Plus, Airhelp knows exactly what you’re entitled to based on their expertise, so you’ll often end up getting more than you would have received on your own.

69. Do your souvenir research ahead of a trip.

Stéphanie de Bruijn

One thing I always do before I travel is a bit of research about the most unique gifts and souvenirs to buy in the destination I’m heading to. Looking this up ahead of time might top you off to some really cool new boutiques, and it will also guarantee that you don’t end up at an airport gift shop wasting your money on a meaningless memento.

For example, this list of the best things to buy in Paris contains a ton of “hidden gems” within the city you might never have known about otherwise. There’s also something extremely satisfying about going on the hunt for a specific unique item—and then finding it!

70. Keep a note in your phone filled with travel quotes .

For those times that you desperately want to post an Instagram photo, but you’re at a loss for a caption.

Did you find this list helpful? Are there any travel hacks you love that I didn’t include? Drop them in the comments below!

If you’re traveling with an infant/toddler; bookmark, screenshot AND print the rules for taking things like breastmilk/formula/snacks through security as well as the policy about early boarding for families. It helps to be prepared for any hiccups. And even if you just fly once or twice a year with a child, get TSA Precheck. Your child under 12 can go through the line with you, which makes things SO much faster.

In Japan, matcha isn't just for drinking . Women there have been known to put the green tea powder in their hair to minimize thinning and amp up shine. That's just one of the tricks Stephanie Flor, founder of Around the World Beauty , has picked up during her four years of traveling the world. A self-taught makeup artist who worked with clients like Mariah Carey , six years into her career, Flor was ready for a change. "I took all the money I made and decided to trade in my makeup bag for a suitcase, and I never looked back," she says. In 2014, she started ATWBeauty, a space for people to "cross cultures and learn from one another." Since then, she's traveled the globe (30 countries and counting!) and picked up beauty insights from locals—like these favorites.

When a traditional Hindu bride gets married, she uses a turmeric paste on her face and hands in what's known as a Haldi ceremony. It's a symbolic gesture—the color of turmeric resembles that of the planet Jupiter, which astrologically represents prosperity and success. "By using masks with turmeric, the belief is that you're attracting the planet's energy," says Flor. She adds that many women there also believe turmeric has bonus properties: Glowing skin.

While trekking Machu Picchu, Flor learned about the power of aloe. "It's used there to treat dry skin, scalp, and hair issues," she was told by locals on her hike. "I love to use it directly from the plant, and work it into the skin after a sunburn or wind rash."

Native to Australia, the kakadu plum is high in vitamin C and often used in face creams. "It's said to help prevent skin aging, cure breakouts, and heal pimples overnight," says Flor.

Zanzibar is a Tanzanian archipelago off the coast of East Africa. There, seaweed is used to make soap because it's packed full of vitamins A and B12, as well as iron and zinc. "It's both purifying and moisturizing," Flor found.

Acai berries are considered a beauty staple in Brazil. "Rich in vitamins A, B, C, and E, these are small antioxidant packed berries, which are said to help with anti-aging," explains Flor. Not only can you eat them, but "you'll see Brazilians use it as a cream" after smashing them and rubbing the juice on their hands.

In Morocco, rhassoul clay is said to remove impurities and detoxify the skin. Locals there mix the clay with water to create a paste. "The steam from the bath in combination with the clay is supposed to purify the body," Flor says.

Black castor oil is widely known because it's filled with Omega fatty acids that can help moisturize and regrow hair. "We're seeing this beauty ingredient incorporated into more and more shampoos and conditioners in the United States," Flor says.

While in Korea, Flor learned about the art of massaging skincare products into the skin before applying makeup. "They told me that working something like a snail serum into your skin in circular motions allows the pores to open and soak in all the ingredients. It gives you a natural face lift and makes everything you use afterwards look even better," says Flor. As far as technique, it's about focusing on one area of the face at a time and applying pressure so the product really sinks into your skin. Snails? Well, in the name of beauty...

9 Beauty Essentials That Saved Me on My Trip to Europe

travel beauty essentials

Traveling abroad is a dream, but prepping for your trip can be a nightmare. Ultimately, you have to pick your priorities so you don’t exceed the luggage weight limits. Having just returned from a trip to Europe, I now know which beauty products I need to have on me at all times.

From haircare holy grails to makeup must-haves, these staples saved me while I was overseas. Keep your skin smooth, your hair frizz-free and your glam locked in place with these nine beauty essentials!

Coco and Eve Self-Tanner Kit

As a seasoned self-tanner with a propensity for paleness, I can’t just go on a getaway and hope to get naturally tan like everyone else. Instead, I have to apply my color artificially ahead of time. Fake it ’til you make it! But since my most recent trip was longer than usual, I knew I needed to pack self-tanner with me for touch-ups.

Coco & Eve’s self-tanner kit saved the day! When my tan started slowly fading, I added on another layer of mousse to keep my sun-kissed look going strong. Plus, this formula smells like a tropical vacation!

Hero Cosmetics Pimple Patches

Of course a pimple decided to pop up when I was enjoying my European holiday! Worst timing. But luckily, I had my handy Hero Cosmetics pimple patches on hand!

These translucent hydrocolloid stickers help reduce blemishes and absorb acne gunk. I use them overnight or during the day to cover my pimples in public.

Utena Hair Styling Stick

Temperatures were in the upper 90s in Italy, so the heat and humidity wreaked havoc on my hair! Updos became my go-to move to fight frizz.

This small styling stick was my secret weapon, taming flyaways for a sleek, slicked-back look that stayed in place. And unlike other wax sticks on the market, this one won’t leave behind as much sticky residue.

Remington Curling Wand

curling wand

This Remington curling wand has been my tried-and-true hair tool for years! I love my Dyson Airwrap, but sadly it doesn’t work in Europe (learned that lesson the hard way on my last trip). This lightweight wand delivers reliable waves without breaking the bank.

Charlotte Tilbury Hydrating Foundation Stick

Charlotte tilbury.

I made the mistake of using a full-coverage foundation on a hot afternoon in Italy. My face quickly became a streaky, sweaty mess!

The next day, I switched to this Charlotte Tilbury foundation stick, and the results were remarkable! The light formula gave my complexion a dewy glow while smoothing my skin.

Urban Decay All Nighter Setting Spray

Urban Decay’s cult-favorite setting spray is the key to long-lasting makeup! Simply spritz over your finished glam to lock the products in place. This travel-sized spray is perfect for your next trip!

Tan Fan Sleep Sac

Sick of staining sheets with your spray tan? This Tan Fan Sleep Sac is a game-changer! It’s essentially a satin sleeping bag that prevents self-tanner from rubbing off on your bedding. Genius! I brought this Sleep Sac with me to Europe so I wouldn’t destroy the hotel’s sheets.

Grace & Stella Under-Eye Masks

Jet lag is no joke! These bestselling eye masks from Grace & Stella revived my tired under-eyes so I could look alert and awake after a long flight. Bye-bye, eye bags!

The best travel makeup bags I recommend as a beauty writer

When you buy through our links, Business Insider may earn an affiliate commission. Learn more

When it comes to traveling with makeup, I tend to take a more-is-more approach. (How can I predict if I'll want to wear red lipstick or a nude tone? Therefore, I bring both.) This requires a thoughtfully constructed, durable, and packable cosmetics case.

The best travel makeup bags can accommodate a variety of full-size and travel-size products. Many have convenient organizational features without detracting from limited packing real estate. Detachable pockets  and anything that can be washed or wiped down are always a plus.

I put more than 10 travel cosmetics cases to the test, and Kusshi's Signature Makeup Bag came out on top. Still, people who are looking for an oversized clear case or a purse-friendly daily pouch will appreciate other items on our list of the eight best makeup bags for traveling.

Best overall: Kusshi Signature Makeup Bag

travel beauty secrets

The pouch can hold over 20 full-size beauty products with room to spare, which is plenty for a week-long trip or more. But what truly sets this versatile bag apart is its ample organization and customization options. Inside, there are:

  • Two mesh slip pockets, for small or oddly shaped items like lipstick or a makeup sponge
  • A zippered pocket, where I kept cotton swabs and eyeshadow tape
  • A detachable brush holder with four extra-large slots that can each hold multiple brushes
  • A zip pocket with plenty of room for lay-flat items like blushes and compacts.

The exterior zipper also opens wide on three sides, allowing the bag to be laid flat while you apply makeup. I found this convenient for locating and removing each of the cosmetics.

I also love that the bag can be used with or without the brush holder. The interior nylon lining can be unzipped and removed, leaving you with a large, single-compartment clamshell case.

As far as aesthetics, this bag comes in a machine-washable fabric (with 15 color options) or a leather version (available in eight hues), which has a removable, machine-washable nylon interior lining.

Best budget: BAGSMART Open Flat Makeup Organizer

travel beauty secrets

The downside to too many pockets in your makeup bag is that sometimes it's tough to remember where you stashed everything.

With a lay-flat design when open, this budget-friendly makeup bag makes it easy to see all its contents at once. Still, it has convenient organizational features including a large clear compartment that's perfect for makeup brushes (I was able to fit six large ones without issue), two elastic side pockets that are great for fragile compacts, and a center zip pocket for small items like lipsticks.

A top handle makes the 9.75 x 4.68 x 4.68-inch bag easy to tote. When not in use, it folds flat.

Best for packing in a carry-on: Away The Cosmetics Bag

travel beauty secrets

While duffle bags and soft-sided weekenders can accommodate an oddly-shaped makeup bag, a rectangular case is easier in carry-on suitcase. Cult-favorite luggage brand Away designed an ultra convenient makeup bag with exactly that in mind.

The 8.3 x 6.3 x 3.9-inch zip case stacks perfectly with Away's luggage organizers like packing cubes and a toiletry bag . Inside is a detachable five-slot makeup brush organizer. The main compartment is a large spill-proof clear zippered pocket, and inside that compartment is a second neoprene zip pocket.

I was able to fit between 10 and 15 full-size beauty products, though overpackers might find the space limited. I recommend loading this case with travel-size products or using it on shorter trips.

My only gripe with this bag (and the one detail that kept it out of the top spot on this list) is that the neoprene zip pocket can't be removed. Depending on which products I packed, the neoprene pocket was either convenient or took away limited real estate from bulkier items. If the pocket were detachable, this bag would be perfect.

Best mini: Kusshi Everyday Makeup Bag

travel beauty secrets

I'm the type to carry a few emergency makeup items (think: lipstick or concealer) in my daily handbag. Kusshi's Everyday Makeup Bag, the same brand little sister of my favorite Signature Makeup Bag, is the perfect daily companion for on-the-go cosmetics.

At 5 x 7.5 x 3.25 inches, it's a smaller version of the Signature bag, except it doesn't include a detachable brush holder/zip compartment (although I was able to fit a medium-size brush in the main compartment).

I got eight full-size makeup items inside, although I had to maneuver a bit to zip it shut. I'd probably recommend using travel-size makeup items in this bag.

Best oversized: Calpak Large Clear Cosmetics Case

travel beauty secrets

As a beauty editor, I've accumulated quite the makeup collection — and even I had trouble filling this clear cosmetics case.

The 11.5 x 5.25 x 9-inch zip case has a whopping 9.5-liter capacity, in which I toted three eyeshadow palettes, four foundations, 10 blush sticks, six makeup brushes, five blush compacts, four concealers, three highlighters, three contour sticks, and a full-size aerosol makeup spray. I could have easily fit more.

This makes the wipe-down case perfect for long trips or traveling for weddings where you may want to load up your entire makeup stash. Another idea: use one side of the case for toiletries and the other for cosmetics.

Since the bag has two huge compartments with one flat zip pocket, I would probably put items like lipsticks or eyeliners in smaller cases first and stow those smaller cases inside this bag. If you like the design of this bag but find the size daunting, Calpak also makes a 6-liter medium version .

Best leather: Quince Italian Leather Pouch Travel Set

travel beauty secrets

Quince continues to impress with high-quality fabrics (like washable silk , plush cashmere , and even diamond jewelry ) at prices about 50-80% off traditional retail costs. The brand's leather bags are no exception.

This 100% top-grain Italian leather makeup bag set is stunning. There are six colors to choose from (I picked olive), and each is outfitted with gold-tone zippers. At $79 for the set, it makes a timeless gift that can be used for years to come.

It's pretty basic in the way of organizational features (the larger bag has one flush slip pocket), but being able to divide items between two cases is advantageous. If you're trying to maximize packing space, this is a solid bet.

I used the 6.5 x 11 x 3.5-inch bag to stow larger full-size makeup items, and I was able to fit two foundations, a tinted moisturizer, two blushes, five blush/contour/highlight sticks, three lipsticks, a makeup setting spray, and an eyeshadow palette — with room to spare.

In the 5 x 9 x 3-inch clamshell, I carried full-size makeup brushes and a concealer. On shorter trips, you could also use the larger bag for travel-size toiletries (the water-resistant microfiber interior can be wiped clean) and the smaller pouch for makeup. I love that the smaller bag can be nested inside the larger one to save space when it's not in use.

Best luxury: Leatherology Clamshell Makeup Bag Set

travel beauty secrets

A set of leather clamshell pouches is a timeless staple that can last for decades — and an excellent gift idea. They can be used to store a variety of items from toiletries and cosmetics to pens and small tech accessories.

Leatherology's Clamshell Bag Set in black croc leather is superiorly stunning thanks to gold-tone hardware and tassled zippers. But it's more than a pretty face.

Measuring 6 x 8.75 x 4.7 inches and 5.2 x 7.25 x 3.75 inches, the cases both have a wide and deep interior great for over-filling. The larger bag, with a convenient interior zip pocket, could easily accommodate 15+ full-size beauty products including brushes. The smaller bag is perfect for lipsticks, nail polishes and concealers. When not in use, the smaller bag nests inside the larger one for easy storage.

Stay Hydrated

travel-skincare-tips

Collapsible Water Bottle

Traveling can take a lot out of you, especially when it comes to hydration. At the airport, bring an empty, refillable water bottle that you can fill up once you’re through security. Drinking plenty of water is a surefire way to help eliminate toxins and keep skin looking fresh.

Moisturize, Moisturize, Moisturize!

travel-skincare-tips

Shea Butter Hand Cream

An airplane cabin is so dry that it absorbs moisture from anywhere it can, including your skin. Always bring intensive moisturizing cream you can use on your hands, feet, and everywhere in between.

To combat dry air and fight aging at the same time, use an ultra-hydrating product like the AVA infuse Lemongrass Clay Detox Masque to pamper post-travel, back at home. The fast-acting blend of ocean grown algae, fumitory, and lemon extracts infused with purifying grapefruit and lemongrass essential oils revives skin instantly after plane travel.

travel-skincare-tips

Facial Cleansing Wipes

Excessive makeup for a long flight can be a recipe for disaster–and breakouts! Pack a few portable cleansing pads to wipe away makeup for a clean, fresh face during your trip.

You can always doll yourself up after you land!

Keep that Oily Skin in Check

travel-skincare-tips

Natural Green Tea Oil Absorbing Tissues

Got oily skin? Consider blotting papers instead of cleansers. Unlike cleansers, blotting papers won’t strip the skin of the essential oils on your face.

Keep up the Routine

Reusable Container

Don’t let your travels throw a wrench into your beauty regimen once you land.  There are plenty of options that are compact and carry-on compliant, including Regenica ® Rejuvenating Dual Serum. Weighing only an ounce, the serum is an easy way to ensure you’re fighting visible signs of aging on-the-go.

Alternatively, use travel containers like the ones shown above to take the exact portion you’ll need for your trip. We love this strategy!

Pure Silk Sleep Mask

Pack a cooling eye mask to fight puffiness around the eyes and to help you get some beauty sleep on the flight. Feel well rested and look the part, too!

Long flights can cause muscle aches (or worse) if you’re not careful. Make an effort to get up to stretch your legs and get your blood circulating when you can. Stand up and walk around the plane at least once per hour.

History of stary oskol.

In 1300, there was a village called Ugly on the the territory of the present city. Today, it is one of the districts of Stary Oskol. At that time, the village was part of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and was a border crossing point on the border with the Golden Horde.

The settlement of Oskol was founded by Russian Tsar Fyodor Ioanovich’s order (Ivan’s the Terrible son) to protect the southern borders of the Russian kingdom in 1593. The bulk of the population were peasants and the military.

In 1617, the town was burned by the Poles. In 1625, 1642 and 1677, the Crimean Tatars approached Stary Oskol, but could not capture it. The town was renamed Stary Oskol (meaning Old Oskol) in 1655, when the town of Tsaryov-Alexeyev, located down the river, was renamed Novy Oskol (New Oskol). Fortifications of the town existed until the 18th century.

More Historical Facts…

Gradually, Stary Oskol turned into peaceful, commercial and merchant town - the center of an agricultural district. Industrial production was represented mainly by enterprises on processing agricultural products.

In 1780, the town got its coat of arms. In 1784, Stary Oskol like most Russian towns of that time was rebuilt according to a new plan signed by Empress Catherine II. A large number of brick houses were built, mostly two-story buildings. The historic center of Stary Oskol has been preserved to our time.

In the second half of the 19th century, the town had a wide network of schools, libraries, reading rooms, printing, secondary schools. In 1894, construction of the railway began, trade and industry began to develop rapidly.

Until the 1930s, there were eleven Orthodox churches in Stary Oskol. During the Second World War, Stary Oskol was occupied by the Germans from July 2, 1942 to February 5, 1943. In 1954, the city became part of the newly formed Belgorod region.

In the late 1960s - early 1970s, in connection with the active development of the Kursk Magnetic Anomaly (the most powerful iron ore basin in the world), Stary Oskol became a major center of iron and steel industry.

Stary Oskol was declared a city of three top-priority Komsomol construction projects. The largest enterprises: Lebedinsky Mining and Processing Plant, Stoilensky Mining and Processing Plant, Oskolsky Electrometallurgical Plant became not only the city-forming enterprises, but also the largest industrial enterprises of the country. Stary Oskol experienced a new birth.

Today, Stary Oskol is a rapidly developing city, one of the leading mining and metallurgical centers of Russia.
