• Before you travel to Korea, it’s a good idea to think about your SIM options. SIM stands for Subscriber Identity Module and unless you have the proper SIM service, you will not be able to use your phone. You can also check with your phone provider to see if you can turn on a dual SIM function on your phone.
• You can change a small bit of money before you travel, but you can also use the airport ATM to get some Korean won.
• There are large differences in exchange rates so you will need to do some comparing before you exchange a large sum of money. You can exchange USD to KRW easily at banks or money exchange shops in all major tourist areas like central Seoul (Myeongdong and Namdaemun are good places but the Coex Center also offers money exchange. You can also negotiate the exchange rate with the vendor if you think it is too high.
• You can withdraw cash from bank ATMs. Alternatively, use a pre-paid travel card like the one offered by  Wise , which allows ATM withdrawals and payments and works perfectly in Korea.

Do US Citizens Need A Tourist Visa?

No, travelers from the USA don’t need a tourist visa to enter South Korea. You can visit for up to 90 days visa-free.

Current COVID-19 Rules In Korea

Most COVID-19 rules in Korea have been dropped and now there are only 2 main rules to be aware of. First, face masks are mandatory when visiting medical facilities (hospitals). There is no longer a 7-day mandatory quarantine for people in South Korea. If you’re infected with COVID, the Korean government recommends a 5 day self-quarantine, but it’s not enforced. Travelers to Korea should follow the current restrictions or may be liable for fines or deportation.

Korean Money Exchange Options​

Once you arrive in Korea, there are several options for exchanging money. First, you can exchange money at a money changer in tourist areas such as Myeongdong. These money changers used to have the best rates in Seoul.

However, a better option these days is to use the currency exchange machines from WOW Exchange. These machines are located all over Seoul’s most popular tourist spots, stations, and hotels. They allow you to exchange foreign cash directly to Korean won, with better rates than at the airport. You can also use these machines to claim a tax refund for your shopping before heading to the airport. Both options require a passport.

Should I Change Money At The Airport?

Exchanging money at the airport is easy and convenient as you can instantly get cash to use for shopping, transportation, and general use. However, the exchange rate at the airport is usually much worse than you’ll find in other places in Korea, as mentioned previously. If you need cash as soon as you land, withdraw a small amount ($50) and then exchange the rest in Seoul.

Travel Money Cards For Korea

While cash is useful and familiar when traveling, a much better option is to use a travel money card (also known as a currency card). Travel money cards, such as the Wise Travel Money Card, allow you to pay for travel expenses without the need to carry cash or convert money.

A travel money card offers the convenience of using a credit card without high fees that a regular bank could charge. It also allows you to withdraw cash from an ATM without a fee (up to a limit), so you can avoid carrying any cash on the flight or using a money exchange. The exchange rate is the mid-market rate, meaning it’s better than you’ll find even at the money exchanges listed before.

Can I Use My Bank Card In Korea?​

Credit cards are widely accepted in Korea. Visa and Mastercard users shouldn’t face a problem, but other cards aren’t as widely accepted. Debit cards and cash withdrawals might not work depending on the bank. Your bank may charge a fee when using it overseas, or give a bad exchange rate. Check with your bank before traveling.

The best option for travel money in Korea is to have a mixture of cash and cards, with a backup credit card just in case. Taking some USD with you is always a good option as you can find plenty of places to exchange it to Korean won and probably at a better rate than you’ll get in the US. If you want to withdraw money in Korea, look for the global ATMs in tourist areas.

Taking a  travel money card  will be safer, cheaper, and more convenient than relying on your own bank or credit card, too. These cards offer competitive rates and are widely accepted around the world so you can use them to visit other countries, too. If you use a travel money card and it gets lost or stolen, you can freeze the card instantly with the app and not have to worry about losing the balance on the card.

When you visit Korea, you’ll notice that most people pay for goods with a card or payment app, even for small purchases like a bottle of water. Unfortunately, the payment apps that are common in the US, such as Apple Pay or Google Pay, aren’t available in Korea. Korean apps, such as Kakao Pay, require a Korean bank account, and therefore aren’t an option for travelers.

T-Money For Public Transport

The T-Money Card is an essential purchase for every traveler to Korea. The T-Money Card is a transportation card that allows contactless travel on Korea’s buses and subways. Simply buy a T-Money Card, top-up the card, then use it to travel.

Not only is this transportation card really convenient, it also saves you money. You’ll receive a discount on every bus or subway journey when you pay with the T-Money Card. These discounted fares are available in all cities across Korea, not just Seoul.

You can get the  T-Money Card in Korea from subway stations and at certain transport centers, including Seoul Station and Incheon Airport. The card costs 2,500 KRW. The best time to visit South Korea is during the warm spring or fall seasons. The weather is mild and clear, there’s a range of festivals and seasonal activities to enjoy, and you can travel to Korea comfortably.

The best months to visit are April, May, September, and October. These months are all during the Korean school semester, so there won’t be as many local travelers around during the weekdays. However, expect the weekends to be busy as people leave the cities to travel within Korea.

Large public holidays, including  Chuseok (mid-autumn festival) in September / October) and Buddha’s Birthday (May), provides travelers with the opportunity to experience Korean culture and celebrations. These holidays change each year based on the lunar calendar.

Korean Weather & Climate

South Korea is a country that experiences four very distinct seasons, with temperatures ranging from 100 Fahrenheit in the summer to below 0 Fahrenheit in the winter . Each of South Korea’s seasons brings opportunities to see unique natural views and enjoy the different climates in Korea.

Spring has some of the gentlest weather, with light rain and a quick jump in temperature to the 60s and 70s by late March. Summer begins with the rainy season in late June and becomes extremely humid and hot throughout July and August before cooling again in September.

Fall has the best weather in Korea, with many warm, sunny days. Cold winter weather appears very quickly in mid-November and the first snow usually appears by late November. Winter is dry and sunny with the lowest chance of rainfall but is also very cold. Snow isn’t constant, but can fall for several weeks on and off during winter.

Visiting in spring offers the chance to see beautiful cherry blossoms stretch across the country, as well as many other spring flowers that brighten up Korea after a cold winter.

Spring starts in late March with the awakening of the cherry blossoms and ends in early June with the start of the rainy season. South Korea is a country with a close connection to nature, which can be witnessed in the many spring festivals and celebrations that happen throughout the year.

Some of the best spring festivals include the Jinhae Cherry Blossom Festival, Damyang Bamboo Forest Festival, Yeon Deung Hoe Lotus Lantern Festival, Jindo Sea Parting Festival, and Boseong Green Tea Plantation Festival.

The weather in summer is perfect for getting outside and relaxing on one of Korea’s many beaches. Some of the best activities include spending a weekend camping or glamping by the beach, hiking in shaded valleys in the national parks, and water sports such as surfing, kayaking, and scuba diving.

Do I need a visa to travel to South Korea?

US citizens and tourists from 111 other countries, including Canada and Mexico, don’t need a visa to travel to South Korea. The US government and South Korea have a visa-free travel arrangement and tourists can stay for up to 90 days.

What happens when I arrive in South Korea?

From May 2023 onwards, there are no forms to fill out as long as you have nothing to declare to customs. Travelers with nothing to declare can enjoy a hassle-free entry procedure by simply walking through the “Nothing to Declare” passage. Travelers who carry items that exceed the duty-free limit, foreign currency that exceed the value of US$10,000, or other items that require customs declaration must still fill out a declaration form and walk through the “Goods to Declare” passage.

If you test positive for COVID-19 while in Korea, you will need to quarantine for 7 days at government facilities. Travelers who break the quarantine rules are subject to deportation or fines.

However, if a traveler (vaccinated or unvaccinated) tests positive for COVID-19 in Korea, they will have to self-quarantine until negative.

I think the app is absolutely amazing & I love how it stays up to date BUT recently it started showing an error when I try to click on majority of the options & it tells me to check my connection (which is absolutely fine) so if that got fixed I’d be extremely happy with the app & I definitely recommend it otherwise!

Useful and helpful app

App looks appealing aesthetically, but usability is a little bit lacking. For example, I like that there's a map function with pinpoints of things to do, eat, see, and sleep near you but the map itself loads just a tiny bit slow and all the pinpoints get in the way when you just want to look at the map to find your way around (e.g. how many streets do I have to walk until I get to Lotteria?). For the attractions section, I felt overloaded with the listings of so many places to visit; it reminded me of the Yellow Pages (a big book listing all the businesses in a city) which I guess is good and bad in a way. For the accommodation section, it would be great if the rates were also listed as well as a filter to sort hotels/motels/etc by star rating and price (from low to high and high to low). Overall, I can see the app developers really put thought and effort into making this app helpful and useful to users because the app sections are thoughtfully planned and laid out with so much categories to choose from and information to read, so kudos to that.

Good information for tourists

There is a lot of good stuff in this app. You can find basic Korean phrases, information regarding transportation, ATM withdrawals, etc. I like the nice photos and descriptions for major and minor sights in Seoul. On the minus side. I am not 100% happy with the map. Depending on the zoom level, icons can appear in a wrong location. This happens when you have multiple objects from the same category in close proximity to each other. Also, the restaurant selection is very poor compared to the wealth of eating options here! Overall this is a great app for any visitor! M.

Though it may be fun-size compared to its neighbors China and Russia, South Korea more than holds its own when it comes to incredible landscapes, cultural attractions and a dazzling food and nightlife scene.

In fact, South Korea's size paired with its ultra-reliable public transit system is what makes it all so accessible. Travelers can go from mountaintop to beachside or from village to megacity – and back again – in a single day. Not that we recommend rushing your journey – with so many unique places to visit, you could dedicate an entire trip to one spot. Best place for nightlife

Home to half of South Korea's population, Seoul  is also the most popular city for tourists to visit. The capital has an electric vibe at any hour of the day or night. Between the city's low-key watering holes, high-end cocktail lounges and always-fun noraebang (karaoke bars), Seoul has something to offer every late-night reveler.

Some of the newest trendsetting bars are located in Euljiro, while many longstanding favorites are in the tried-and-true nightlife neighborhoods of Gangnam , Hongdae and Itaewon . Gangnam is where the most expensive clubs are concentrated, while Hongdae is a more affordable option for budget-conscious travelers and university students. Itaewon has a reputation for drawing an international crowd.

Best place for maritime culture

Situated on the southern coast, South Korea's second city, Busan , overflows with a maritime culture as lively as it is varied. Setting the tone is Busan Port, the oldest and largest in the country (and also the sixth-busiest in the world), handling some 80% of South Korea's container cargo. The nearby Busan Modern History Museum tells the story of the port's pivotal role in South Korea's history. From there, up and down the coastline are any number of beautiful beaches, parks, observatories, villages and even a temple, Haedong Yonggungsa , one of the country's only oceanside temples.

At Jagalchi , South Korea's largest fish market, the day's catch is arranged in stall after stall of fish, eel, crabs, sea squirts, abalone, and more. Shoppers can select their seafood on the ground level and then take it up to one of the restaurants on the floors above, where the staff will expertly de-scale, de-shell, gut or filet and then cook it for you. For other scrumptious seafood bites, look for restaurants along the beach specializing in jogae gui , grilled shellfish served with a variety of dipping sauces like chogochujang (vinegar red pepper sauce), soy sauce with wasabi, and melted butter with onions.

3. Gyeongju

Best place to discover ancient treasures

As the capital of the Silla Kingdom, when the city was called Donggyeong ("eastern capital"), Gyeongju is a treasure trove of ancient relics, religious to royal. Gyeongju National Museum houses a fair number of them – including ornate jewelry, earthenware jars, prayer bells and Buddha statues – but even more artifacts lie beyond. Gyeongju is known as South Korea's museum without walls.

See the royal tombs of Tumuli-gongwon ; the oldest astrological observatory in East Asia, Cheomseongdae ; the Buddhist grotto of Seokguram ; the picturesque palace of Donggung; and the temple halls, pagodas and bridges of Bulguk-sa . Woljeonggyo, a covered wooden bridge with striking red columns, green roof beams and two end towers, might be the prettiest bridge in all of South Korea – even more so at night when it's illuminated with lights.

Best place for contemporary history

Regarded as the birthplace of Korean democracy, Gwangju was the site of the May 18 Democratic Uprising of 1980, the 10-day-long armed resistance against Chun Doo-hwan's authoritarian military regime. After the brutal repression of some 600 university student protesters, the people of Gwangju stood up and joined in rebellion, resulting in state massacre and torture. Despite the movement's suppression, it's seen as a turning point in South Korea's struggle for democracy.

To better understand this pivotal event in the country's history, go to the May 18th Memorial Park and National Cemetery . You can also take a walk down Chungjang-ro, a now-converted shopping and entertainment street that was once ground zero of the uprising.

Best place for beaches and waterfalls

South of the Korean mainland in the Yellow Sea, Jeju-do  is blessed with a balmy subtropical climate, making it the country's most popular vacation destination. The island is in such high demand that the flight between Seoul and Jeju City is the busiest air route in the world. Just one glimpse of Jeju's glittering white-sand and black-sand beaches, crystal-clear waters and volcanic topography of calderas, cones and tuffs, and it's easy to see why so many mainlanders flock to the island for a bit of R&R.

While Jeju's beaches make the perfect natural setting for lounging oceanside with a book and a cocktail, the island has plenty more to do than just relax. Aside from climbing the country's tallest mountain, Hallasan, outdoors adventure seekers can go surfing at Woljeongri or Jungmun beaches, snorkeling and scuba diving at Munseom Island, spelunking in the Geomunoreum Lava Tube System, waterfall chasing at Jeongbang Pokpo or Cheonjiyeon Pokpo , or tewoo rafting aboard a traditional Jeju boat at the Soesokkak Estuary.

6. Gangwon-do 

Best place for winter sports

The site of the 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympics, Gangwon-do is home to the best ski resorts in South Korea. For skiing and snowboarding, head to top-rated Yongpyong , the country's oldest and largest ski resort, or High1 , featuring a casino and revolving restaurant. Other popular options are Phoenix Park, Vivaldi Park and Alpensia.

The frosty fun doesn't stop there – Gangwon also hosts several winter festivals, including the Hwacheon Sancheoneo Ice Festival , where participants can try ice fishing, curling or sledding, and the Taebaeksan Snow Festival , which puts on enormous ice sculpture and ice fountain displays.

Best place for celebrating folk traditions

The capital of Gyeongsangbuk-do , Andong is also referred to as "the capital of Korean spirit." It is the country's Confucian culture capital, where you'll find traditional wooden masks and soju, the Korean national drink. At Andong's UNESCO-listed Hahoe Folk Village , the most famous folk village in South Korea, visitors can immerse themselves in the old Joseon-era way of life. Peek inside the village's workshops and its special choga homes, distinguished by their straw-thatched roofs, and even book an overnight stay in a guesthouse.

At the Hahoe Mask Museum , you can view the region's quintessential masks, carved into animated expressions to portray characters like aristocrats, servants and monks. Every fall at the Andong Maskdance Festival , you can see them in action in play performances. You can also tour notable Confucian academies, try traditional soju (local vodka) at the Soju Museum or a local restaurant, and sample Andong's signature soy-braised chicken dish, jjimdak .

A nation ripe with cultural, historical, and natural tourist attractions, South Korea has a plethora of interesting sights. Aside from the obvious tourist attractions, including mega-city Seoul, the country offers wide open spaces boasting incredible natural beauty characterized by rock formations, green pastures, and dense forest.

On the whole, the country has had a rich history, where various rulers and kingdoms have dominated throughout the ages. Their reigns are still visible in the ruins and restored palaces scattered throughout the country. South Korea has an interesting cultural landscape to boot; the nation is rich with festivals, cultural events and tasty food.

15. Ganghwado Island [SEE MAP]

Located in the West Sea, Ganghwado Island is brimming with history. It has been occupied since prehistoric times and even enjoyed a period when it was the capital of Korea in the 13th century. In the 19th century, the island was used strategically to defend against the French and Japanese.

Aside from historical sites, Ganghwado Island offers impressive scenery, with several trails leading around the island; including Manisan Mountain with its expansive sea views. Only a short 90 minutes from Seoul, the island is close to the North Korean border and connected to the mainland via a bridge, so it is very accessible.

14. Pocheon Art Valley [SEE MAP]

This area near the city of Pocheon was once a working quarry which was closed to the public. However, in what was Pocheon’s first environmental restoration project, the quarry was transformed into a beautiful park.

The turquoise lake lies in sharp contrast to the rock cliff’s sheer faces, and is visited by thousands of tourists a year. There is an outdoor stage located next to the water where the art center sometimes hold performances, with numerous events held per year, as well as daily art workshops.

13. Seoraksan National Park [SEE MAP]

Seoraksan National Park is an unspoiled landscape of sharp, rocky outcrops and windswept pine trees. There are crystal clear streams and rivers that run through the park’s valley, providing hydration for the 2000 plus animals that live within its boundaries. The area is extremely popular for hiking, with well-marked trails varying in difficulty.

Near the entrance of the park, visitors are greeted by a massive Buddha statue, situated at Sinheungsa Temple. At times, hikers can hear monks chanting in the distance as they explore. There are plenty of food and drink options within the park boundaries, but they tend to more expensive then dining facilities outside of the park.

12. Bulguksa Temple [SEE MAP]

Gyeongju’s Bulguksa Temple was originally built in 528, but has endured a number of renovations and extensions throughout history. Just outside of Busan, the temple was very important to many dynasties.

The complex is made up of many buildings with intricate carvings and statues and harbors some of South Korea’s most important national treasures, such as the Sinheungsa and Dabotap pagodas. The garden is very impressive year-round, but is even more stunning when the cherry blossoms are in bloom. It is best to visit with a guide, who will bring the scenery to life with tales of yesteryear.

11. Jindo Sea Parting [SEE MAP]

South Korea has its own modern version of the famous biblical story of Moses. Every year, visitors from around the world flock to Jindo to witness this natural phenomenon of the ‘sea parting’.

However, it is not as magical as it might first appear; the natural bridge is the result of a yearly accumulation of pebbles and sand which have collected due to the tide. In total, the sea parting is 2.8 kilometers long, and at low tide, 40-60 meters wide. A number of exciting exhibitions and programs take place for the duration of the festival; including parades and cultural events.

10. Jeonju Hanok Village [SEE MAP]

The roads of Jeonju Hanok Village are lined with street-food vendors and restaurants carrying dishes that are traditional to Jeonju. One such dish is Jeonju bibimbay; it was considered a royal dish during the Jeonju dynasty.

Besides the culinary aspects, the town is famous for its many hanoks: traditional Korean houses which pay considerable attention to the positioning of the house. The ideal hanok would feature a mountain in the back and a river out front. They typically utilize a courtyard to retain heat within the house, especially the floor, since Koreans traditionally sit on the floor to eat and entertain.

9. Gamcheon Culture Village [SEE MAP]

Colorful, terraced houses that look seaward characterize Gamcheon Cultural Village in Busan. Before 2009, Gamcheon was a slum; home to refugees from the Korean War. However, various government agencies undertook an initiative to redevelop the area as a tourist attraction and artistic hub. As such, the city received funding to beautify their town. Artists flocked to the area and now art lives around every corner, whether it’s outdoor statues or street art.

Today, the best way to experience the city is simply to lose yourself in the colorful alleyways of this unique town.

8. Boryeong Mud Festival [SEE MAP]

Once a year on Daecheon Beach, the dirtiest festival in South Korea takes place. The mud at the Annual Boryeong Mud Festival is believed to have special beautifying mineral properties.

Each year it is brought to the beach in truck loads from the nearby Boryeong mud flats. The festival began in 1998 to promote cosmetics that used Boryeong mud in their products. Since then, the event has exploded. Each year millions visit for the two-week affair. Some of the most popular events take place on the last weekend; including the Mud Prison, mud skiing, and mud wrestling.

7. Boseong Tea Fields [SEE MAP]

The beautiful, rolling green hills of Boseong Tea Fields are the only fields of their kind open in Korea, and are just begging for a photo. There are many walking trails and viewing points where you can take in the beauty of the verdant gardens and watch the skilled workers selecting the best tea leaves. Tea is an integral part of Korean culture and you can experience a traditional Korean tea ceremony while you are here. It is a great way to dive into learning about Korean culture and get a chance to sample some fresh tea too.

Before you leave, don’t forget to check out the beautiful bamboo forest on the outskirts of the fields.

6. Hallasan National Park [SEE MAP]

Hallasan National Park is home to South Korea’s tallest mountain: Hallasan Mountain. Traditionally, Hallasan Mountain was called Mount Yeongjusan, meaning ‘the mountain high enough to pull the galaxy’. The park is situated in South Korea’s Jeju Island . There are trails suited to every fitness level snaking around the area.

Even the hike to the summit of Mont Hallasan is pretty relaxing, and suited to intermediate level hikers. This mountain was once an active volcano; at the summit, you can find evidence of this in the form of a stunning crater lake.

5. Hwaseong Fortress [SEE MAP]

This marvelous fortress is a true testament to Korea’s unique history and military might. Built to surround the town of Suwan by King Jeongko between 1794 and 1796, it has received many battle scars since then. King Jeongko built the fortress to honor his father, who was murdered by his grandfather. The complex features an elaborate palace, almost six kilometers of fortress walls, and various gate towers. Every autumn, the Suwan Hwaseng Cultural Festival takes places; featuring reenactments and other cultural events and exhibits.

4. Huwon Secret Garden [SEE MAP]

Changdeokgung Palace in Seoul was the principal place of residence for a number of powerful kings and their royal families throughout history. It is one of the best-preserved palaces in South Korea at this moment.

However, the Huwon Secret Garden is one of the stars of the property. This huge garden features an incredible array of plants, trees, rivers, lotus ponds, pavilions and sitting areas. Some of the trees on the property are over 300 years old. The garden was granted its name because it had an air of mystery about it; it was a place where no one but the royal families were permitted to enter without permission.

3. Namiseom Island [SEE MAP]

Namiseom Island, part of the larger Gapyeong county, is blanketed in a beautiful natural landscape. It enjoys distinct seasons and is a very popular destination for domestic tourism. The half-moon island results from the creation of Cheongpyeong Dam, which sectioned off the land from the rest of the river.

The island was named after the famous general Nami who was buried here in the 17th century. Aside from the surreal scenery and historical references, the island is known for its delicious pan-fried rice cake.

2. Gyeongbokgung Palace [SEE MAP]

Located in the heart of Seoul, Gyeongbokgung Palace is one of South Korea’s most iconic buildings. The incredible palace finished construction in 1395. However, over the years, various other rooms and structures were added to this incredible building.

The two museums that reside within the palace walls include the Museum of Korea and the National Palace Museum of Korea. There are still a number of ongoing restoration efforts aimed at restoring this fabulous building back to the epitome of its former glory.

The demilitarized zone between North and South Korea is one of the tensest borders in recent times. For some visiting the area, the DMZ zone is the only glimpse of the mysterious and brutal country, North Korea, that they will ever get.

There are various viewing platforms from the South Korean side that look northward toward North Korea. The strip that borders each country was decided at the end of the Korean Wars as part of the Korean Armistice Agreement.

North Korea to Open Border for Foreign Tourists in December, Tour Operators Say

SEOUL (Reuters) - North Korea will resume international tourism to its northeastern city of Samjiyon in December, and possibly the rest of the country, tour companies said on Wednesday.

The move is a sign that the reclusive country is readying to reopen borders to bigger groups of foreign tourists after years of strict COVID border controls.

"We have received confirmation from our local partner that tourism to Samjiyon and likely the rest of the country will officially resume in December 2024," the Beijing-based Koryo Tours said on its website.

International flights in and out of North Korea resumed last year and a small group of Russian tourists flew to North Korea for a private tour in February. Top foreign officials, including Russian President Vladimir Putin in June, have been visiting the country.

But North Korea has not been fully open to international tourists since 2020.

"Having waited for over four years to make this announcement, Koryo Tours is very excited for the opening of North Korean tourism once again," the firm said, adding its local partner would confirm itineraries and dates in coming weeks.

North Korea has been building what it called a "socialist utopia" in Samjiyon, a city near the Chinese border, and "a model of highly-civilised mountain city" with new apartments, hotels, a ski resort and commercial, cultural and medical facilities.

Leader Kim Jong Un in July sacked or demoted some senior officials for their "irresponsible" handling of his flagship Samjiyon project.

Another travel agency, KTG Tours, also announced that tourists would be able to go to Samjiyon from this winter.

Typhoon Ampil Approaches Japan, Disrupting Flights and Trains

The powerful storm is expected to bring heavy rain, strong winds and the threat of floods and landslides to eastern Japan, including Tokyo, on Friday.

Typhoon Ampil barreled toward Japan on Thursday packing strong winds and heavy rain, and forcing the cancellation of hundreds of flights and trains in and around Tokyo.

The powerful storm had maximum sustained winds of 104 miles per hour, equivalent to those of a Category 2 hurricane, on Thursday evening, according to the U.S. Navy’s Joint Typhoon Warning Center . By Friday, Ampil’s winds were expected to strengthen to 138 m.p.h., similar in strength to a Category 4 hurricane .

Ampil was expected to dump up to 7.8 inches of rain on Tokyo, the capital, and the surrounding area over a 24-hour period, bringing risks of landslides and flooding, Tachihara Shuichi, the chief forecaster for the Japan Meteorological Agency, told reporters on Thursday.

Travelers overwhelmed call centers on Thursday, said Japan Airlines, which canceled most domestic flights and some international ones to and from Tokyo’s Haneda and Narita airports on Friday. It cited the risk of “aircraft rotation” by the typhoon.

All Nippon Airways, Japan’s largest airline, said in an emailed statement that it had canceled more than 290 flights that were scheduled for Friday, affecting about 63,000 passengers.

Central Japan Railway suspended all rail service, including the Shinkansen bullet trains, between Tokyo and Nagoya, and between Nagoya and Osaka, on Friday. It also warned of delays on Saturday.

Another major rail operator, East Japan Railway Company, suspended many of its bullet and express trains around Tokyo on Friday.

Japan’s Coast Guard warned large vessels, container ships, ferries and tankers to leave Tokyo Bay indefinitely for waters less affected by the typhoon.

Ampil was forecast to move north along Japan’s eastern coast on Saturday before swerving eastward on Saturday, away from the country and into the Pacific, according to a storm track published by the Joint Typhoon Warning Center. By then, the storm’s winds were forecast to have weakened to the equivalent of a Category 1 hurricane.

Typhoons are tropical cyclones that form in the Western Pacific or Indian Oceans with sustained winds of at least 74 m.p.h. The term “hurricane” refers to tropical cyclones in the Atlantic.

Scientists have established a consensus that climate change is causing tropical cyclones to become more powerful and making major storms more likely. They also agree that climate change affects the amount of precipitation storms produce.

Ukraine war latest: Vladimir Putin 'has made decision' on responding to Kursk invasion

Vladimir Putin has "made a decision" and there will be "severe punishment" following Ukraine's incursion into Russia, according to the Russian ambassador to the US. Elsewhere, Russia has been forced to suspend a ferry service to Crimea following a Ukrainian attack.

Russia has reportedly reinforced troops in its push for the key Ukrainian strategic hub of Pokrovsk in the eastern Donetsk region.

Although Moscow has been redeploying troops from other regions in Ukraine back to Russia in order to head off a Ukrainian incursion, it has not redeployed troops from its offensive towards the city but has instead reinforced them, according to The Economist.

Russian forces have been pushing towards the key strategic hub for months.

Capturing the city would compromise Kyiv's defensive abilities and supply routes, and bring Russia closer to its stated aim of controlling the entire Donetsk region.

Earlier, our military analyst Sean Bell answered a reader's question on whether there is a response to come from Russia over the Kursk invasion - and he said Moscow might focus on its offensive towards Pokrovsk.

We brought you reports earlier that prisoners at a Russian penal colony had taken prison staff hostage and killed one person. 

Local news outlets now say snipers from Russia's national guard have killed the four hostage-takers.

The National Guard Service said the inmates were "neutralised" and all hostages freed, the reports said, though the number of hostages was not specified.

Before the inmates were shot, state news agency TASS said four victims were taken to a local hospital, with two of them in serious condition.

Unconfirmed reports on the Telegram messaging app said one or two people had died.

A video filmed by the attackers showed four uniformed officials lying in pools of blood - three of them motionless. Another was sitting upright in a doorway with a knife held to his neck.

One man shouted that they were Islamic State militants and had seized control of the prison in the Volgograd region.

Other videos showed four men pacing about a prison yard where a bloodied prison staff member was being held hostage.

One of the prisoners appeared to have an improvised explosive vest while the others were carrying knives and hammers.

Russian media said the four suspects were citizens of Tajikistan and Uzbekistan and three were in jail for drug offences and the fourth for unpremeditated murder.

The United States has added 105 Russian and Chinese firms to a trade restriction list for allegedly supporting the Russian military, ramping up pressure on Moscow's war efforts in Ukraine.

The 63 Russian and 42 Chinese companies, along with 18 from other countries, were targeted for several reasons, from sending US electronics to Russian military-related parties to producing thousands of Shahed-136 drones for Moscow to use in Ukraine.

Being added to the entity list means US suppliers will have to apply for a hard-to-get licence if they want to ship to the targeted companies.

Many of the firms were also given a special designation forcing overseas suppliers to get the same US licences before shipping to the targeted companies.

Russia has accused Ukraine of trying to attack a nuclear power plant in an overnight drone attack.

It is the second time Moscow has made such allegations in two days.

The nuclear plant is located in the Kursk region in western Russia, where fighting has raged since Kyiv's forces launched an incursion into Russian territory.

The Ukrainian defence ministry is yet to comment on the Russian allegation.

Meanwhile the Russian defence ministry said its air defence units had shot down three Ukrainian drones in the region overnight. 

It said it had thwarted Kyiv's attempt to carry out "a terrorist attack" against Russian facilities.

Russian state news agency TASS reported a drone had been shot down near a storage facility for spent nuclear fuel at the Kursk power plant.

TASS quoted Russian foreign ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova as saying it was an "act of nuclear terrorism" requiring an immediate response from the UN nuclear watchdog, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

The head of the IAEA Rafael Grossi is due to visit the power plant next week and has appealed for maximum restraint in order to avoid a nuclear accident.

The Wagner mercenary group has become "increasingly fragmented" in the year since its leader Yevgeny Prigozhin and founder Dmitry Utkin were killed in a plane crash, the UK Ministry of Defence (MoD) has said.

"In comparison to its peak personnel count of around 50,000 in 2023, Wagner now highly likely maintains around 5,000 total personnel across its residual deployments in Belarus and Africa," the MoD said in its latest update.

Prigozhin and Utkin were among 10 killed when their plane crashed north of Moscow one year ago today under mysterious circumstances.

It came two months to the day after the Wagner boss led a short-lived mutiny against Russia's military top brass, mounting the most serious challenge against Vladimir Putin since he came to power in 1999.

The Wagner group was formed of ex-convicts and mercenaries and played a key role on the battlefield in Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

It has also been active in conflicts in Syria, the Central African Republic, Sudan and Libya.

The MoD also shared a map of the latest battlefield situation in eastern Ukraine:

Germany is investigating suspected drone espionage after drones were flown over several industrial sites.

Yesterday prosecutors said they had opened an investigation into repeated drone flights over critical infrastructure in northern Germany which they said were suspected of spying for sabotage purposes.

The German military's Territorial Command said it had complied with a police request to provide radar data on the suspicious drone flights.

German chemicals group Covestro and Swiss cement maker Holcim are among a group of chemical, energy and logistics companies that have operations in the ChemCoast Park industrial area in Brunsbuttel, in the northern state of Schleswig-Holstein.

Yesterday German newspaper Bild cited state criminal police saying the drones were likely to have been Russian Orlan-10s, which have a range of 500-600km (310-372 miles) and can fly at over 62mph (100kph).

Germany has been one of Ukraine's biggest suppliers of military aid since Russia invaded in 2022 and has been on increased alert over sabotage activity.

Narendra Modi has urged Volodymyr Zelenskyy to sit down for talks with Russia to end the war.

The Indian prime minister told the Ukrainian president he would act as a "friend" to help bring peace, as the two leaders met in Kyiv.

Mr Modi said he had come to the Ukrainian capital with a message of peace.

"The road to resolution can only be found through dialogue and diplomacy, and we should move in that direction without wasting any time. Both sides should sit together to find a way out of this crisis," Mr Modi said.

"I want to assure you that India is ready to play an active role in any efforts towards peace. If I can play any role in this personally, I will do that. I want to assure you as a friend."

Mr Modi said India had not been neutral or a bystander during the conflict and was always on the side of peace.

New Delhi has so far avoided condemning Russia's invasion and Mr Zelenskyy previously criticised Mr Modi for his visit to Moscow in July, chiding him for hugging Vladimir Putin during their meeting.

Should the fact that there has been no direct response from Putin militarily regarding the Ukraine incursion into Russia signal a larger more catastrophic response to come from Russia? Or is this just "how they're playing it"?

Military analyst Sean Bell  answers:

When Ukraine first launched its audacious incursion into Russian territory over a fortnight ago, some commentators were concerned that the attack would provoke a swift and ruthless response from Vladimir Putin.  However, over a fortnight into Ukraine's military operation, it now appears that Russia has struggled to develop a coherent response, and Ukraine maintains the initiative.

The Ukrainian operation appears to have been well planned, and Ukraine has capitalised on its initial success by reinforcing its forces and pushing deeper into Russia.  Although Ukraine has not declared the objectives of this dynamic operation, it appears that Volodymyr Zelenskyy  was seeking to seize the initiative, bolster Ukrainian morale, and provoke a military response from Russia that would relieve pressure on an embattled Ukrainian frontline in the Donbas.   

Mr Putin was clearly frustrated at the Ukrainian incursion, but a ruthless Russian military response was only one option. Ukraine is short of military capability - soldiers and weapons - and it appears that they have deployed up to 10,000 soldiers (probably battle-hardened) into Russian territory. This "fixes" these Ukrainian forces well away from the frontline Russian action in the Donbas. 

Mr Putin knows that progress on the frontline will slow when winter arrives, so his forces have perhaps 10 to 12 weeks remaining to achieve the objectives of his so-called Special Military Operation. By focusing on Russian main effort in the Donbas, Mr Putin knows that Ukraine has diluted the forces available to resist the Russian assault towards Pokrovsk, which might enable greater progress in the limited time available.   

Once Russia's objectives in the Donbas have been achieved, Mr Putin might consider that he can address the Kursk incursion in slower time.

Ukrainian forces have reportedly recaptured nearly two square kilometers of territory in the northeastern Kharkiv region. 

The 3rd Separate Assault Brigade said it was behind the counteroffensive, but did not provide any details on when it was launched or what area had been recaptured. 

As such, it's difficult to predict whether it will have further impact on the battlefield. 

However, the Ukrainian military did say it had taken control of an area that was held by a Russian battalion. 

Brigade Commander Andrii Biletskyi said the ratio of forces on the battlefield was 2:5:1 in Moscow's favour. 

Sky News is unable to verify this battlefield report. 

Russia had launched a large offensive in the region in the spring which brought initial gains, but the operation later stalled. 

Ukraine's forces have gained momentum and altered the battlefield this month, launching a shock offensive into Russia's Kursk region. 

They have also intensified a drone war against Russia's military and fuel targets, including destroying a ferry taking fuel supplies to Crimea.

Ukraine is now hoping the regained momentum could strengthen Kyiv's hand on the diplomatic front.
