How to pick a Halong Bay 2 Night Cruise for Solo Travellers

' src=

Halong Bay is a bay featuring thousands of limestone islets in Northern Vietnam . Located 170km east of Hanoi, visitors often make a day or overnight trip to this breathtaking UNESCO World Heritage Site.

One of the best ways to see Halong Bay is to join an organized tour where you cruise through the emerald water on a boat . Along the way, you can see caves and floating islands and even visit some of the bigger limestone islands .

In this post, I will cover all the details of selecting a Halong Bay cruise for solo travellers. Plus, I included all the details of the Halong Bay 2 night cruise, so you know what to expect.

Halong Bay cruise: what you need to know

Before you join a Halong Bay cruise, take a look at some of these useful tips first:

  • Most travellers like to book a Halong Bay cruise before going to Vietnam . This is advisable if you are travelling on a tight schedule.
  • Or you can also book a cruise while you are in Hanoi. Many tour companies line the small streets west of Hoàn Kiếm Lake.
  • Most overnight cruises charge a single supplement for solo travellers. It costs about $40USD per night. (This annoys me as someone who likes to travel solo. But I still think Halong Bay is worthwhile because the scenery is unreal).

How to pick a Halong Bay cruise

First of all, there are many types of Halong Bay cruises. They vary in the number of days spent on the boat:

  • 1 day cruise
  • 2 day 1 night cruise
  • 3 day 2 night cruise

And most Halong Bay cruise package includes:

  • Round-trip air-conditioned minibus transfer between Hanoi and Halong Bay
  • Onboard accommodation (for overnight cruises)
  • Meals (as indicated)
  • Sights and activities (different with each tour company)

So when you decide which Halong bay cruise to pick, consider what you want to see and how many days you want to spend on a boat. And make sure to read all the fine prints and see what is included and what is not (i.e. single supplement, return transfer, etc.).

Halong Bay cruise

Halong Bay cruises for solo travellers

As for solo travellers going to Halong Bay, unfortunately there doesn’t seem to be many options for single travellers as most tour companies include a single supplement (argh!). You can still go by yourself but you have to pay an extra $40USD or more because you are booking a room for yourself.

However, you could try and ask to waive the single supplement fee during low season . It doesn’t hurt to ask especially if you are booking a tour last minute .

Recommendation: Halong Bay 2 night cruise

The best part of a Halong Bay cruise is that everything is planned and taken care of. From your accommodation to all your meals, everything is planned for you. All you have to do is have a great time!

But the bigger task is choosing the right cruise that suits your needs as a solo traveller.

And after reading about all the things to do in Halong Bay and having also been on two Halong Bay cruises myself, I highly recommend taking an overnight trip to Halong Bay . A two-day and one-night Halong Bay cruise tour will give you enough time to see the best highlights and allows you to relax onboard for the night.

Halong Bay 2 day 1 night cruise: typical itinerary

As I mentioned already, I went to Halong Bay twice and both times were on a 2-night cruise. And I saw similar attractions both times.

Here is a typical Halong Bay itinerary for a 2-day and 1-night tour, so you know what to expect.

Day 1 of the Halong Bay cruise

The Halong Bay cruise starts with a pickup from your hotel in Hanoi . A small minibus will come around and pick you and other passengers to embark on a Halong Bay 2-day tour.

Along the way, there is a pitstop for snacks, bathroom breaks and souvenir shopping .

Then, you’ll arrive at Tuan Chau International Marina after a few hours. Stay with your group at the pier; it can get pretty busy during the high season.

Then once you are on the boat, you will be given keys to your cabin . And after a quick lunch, the activities for the first day begin.

Bo Hon Island

The itinerary starts with Bo Hon Island , one of the largest island chains in the region. A short hike up the island will give you a magnificent view of the surrounding area .

There are many caves on the limestone island including Sung Sot (Surprise) Cave which has two large grotto chambers you can walk through.

The first chamber seemed rather small and busy as many tourists were taking photos. But as you keep walking, you will see the massive open cavity of the second grotto where coloured lights illuminate all the stalactites .

View of all the docked boats from the top

Ti Top Beach

After seeing the illuminated caves, next on the itinerary is Ti Top Beach .

You can spend a few hours on the beach playing volleyball or just lounging around. But the highlight of the beach has to be the panoramic view from the island’s highest point . You can get there by climbing 400+ steps . This spot is particularly nice during sunset .

The first day of your overnight cruise ends with a lovely dinner with fellow travellers.

And after dinner, you can watch a cooking demonstration, karaoke and or try squid fishing .

View of boats and islands from the top

Day 2 of the Halong Bay tour

The second day started with an early tai chi class on the sundeck .

After breakfast, put on your lifejackets and make your way to Luon Cave , an open-air cave near Bo Hon Island which you can only access by bamboo boat or kayak. The boat tour includes a ride through the 100-meter-long arch . There were even wild monkeys hanging around the steep limestone islands!

Luon Cave

Return to pier

Enjoy the last few hours in Halong Bay because the 2-night cruise ends right after lunch. When you return to the cruise boat, lunch is served. And soon after, you’ll arrive at the busy pier again for the ride back to Hanoi.

Halong Bay 2 day 1 night cruise: options for solo travellers

Majestic halong cruise.

The 3-star  Majestic Halong Cruise has three decks and twelve cabins, and a capacity for 27 passengers. The boat itself is basic but nice. It has an upper deck where you can hang out and suntan. The dining room is on the second deck, with panoramic views that wrap around the dining space.

I joined a 7 day 6 night tour which included two nights on a 3-star cruise, and the Majestic Halong Cruise was the one chosen for that day. I was pretty happy with it, especially because my room was nice and I had a private balcony with an awesome view!

Sundeck on the Majestic Cruise

Paradise Elegance Cruise

I’ve also been on the luxurious  Paradise Elegance Cruise on my previous visit to Halong Bay.

The Paradise Elegance Cruise boat is newer and bigger. Each of the 31 deluxe cabins has a private balcony or a terrace and the furniture and finishes are very high-end.

The Paradise cruise also has spa facilities and can house more passengers. The dining room space is exceptional, and the food was excellent.

Private room

Other Halong Bay cruises 2 days 1 night

I highly recommend doing a Halong Bay 2 day 1 night tour because it will give you sufficient time to see all the important highlights around the area.

Most tour companies go to similar places in Halong Bay. They vary in pricing and quality.

A budget cruise includes basic accommodations, average food and all the activities as indicated whereas a luxury boat may include spa facilities, nicer guestrooms, nicer dining room, entertainment onboard, etc.

And if you really look at the itinerary carefully, an overnight cruise starts mid-day on day 1 and ends mid-day on day 2. If you join a one-day cruise, it might feel a bit short. So even though the overnight cruise starts late and ends early, at least you can see more and have some time to relax on the boat.

Other Halong Bay cruises for solo travellers

One day tour of halong bay.

If you don’t have too much time during your time in Northern Vietnam, you can still join a 1-day Halong Bay tour to see the floating village and James Bond Cave and enjoy a seafood lunch onboard.

Three day Halong Bay overnight cruise

If you want to stay longer, there are 3-day 2-night cruises around Halong Bay.

Staying onboard longer means more sites and activities. They include kayaking around Luon Cave, Ba Hang floating village, Frog and Chop Stick Islands, visiting a pearl farm, and so much more.

Other Halong Bay cruises

Or if you want to try something different, you can join a cruise on Bai Tu Long Bay . Alternatively, you can enjoy a stay on Cat Ba Island if you don’t want to tour around the islands.

Here are a few more Halong Bay cruise options:

Which halong bay overnight cruise will you join.

Honestly, there is no bad option at all. Halong Bay is truly magical! Every solo traveller visiting Northern Vietnam should consider spending at least a day seeing all the beautiful islands.

Halong Bay solo travel is totally possible – even if it means paying the annoying single supplement fee. If I have to go again for the third time, I totally would!

I hope this post was helpful for you in choosing a cruise on Halong Bay. Let me know in the comments which cruise you decide to go with.

Hi! would you recommed waiting till you get to hanoi to book a cruise? I’m heading there next week and am a little worried about not getting on a cruise.

' src=

There are lots of tours in Halong Bay! Once you arrive in Hanoi, find one of many tour operators and book a tour asap! It should be fine – a lot of people wait until they arrive in Hanoi. Hope this helps!

Hi, do you recommend the overnight cruise for someone who’s traveling solo? Because even though this it the “solo traveller guide”, everywhere in this post you say “we got a cabin”or we stayed”. I was just wondering if this tour is something suitable for a girl traveling alone or would I feel like the odd one out?

Hi Luisa, thank you for your message. A friend joined me on this part of my trip. I previously went to Halong Bay few years ago and went by myself. It is safe to go on an overnight cruise. It depends on the cruise, you may or may not feel like an odd one out. The reason why I say this is because some cruise will have all the travellers sit together at the dining table – like a communal table. Other tours will have separate tables just for you and your friends. This tour I just went on with my friend, we sat with other travellers. So it was easy to talk to other travellers and not feel alone. You can ask the tour company about this. And everyone hangs out on the top deck so you definitely won’t feel alone. Hope this helps! 🙂

This article represents itself as recommending tours based on being a solo traveller. At least that is how I interpreted. Other than mentioning a singles supplement, there is little here to do with solo travel, other than you state you travelled solo. It would be great to see an edit to focus more on whether there are differences between providers for solo travel,.

Hi Trevor, thank you for your comment. I understand what you mean. And from the perspective of the cruises, I didn’t really find anything that differentiate between solo travellers and other travellers. The cruises didn’t advertise or attract solo travellers specifically. I haven’t really found that actually. But perhaps I can focus more on my solo travel experience during the cruise, interacting with other travellers, etc. Anyway that’s all great feedback. Really appreciate it!

Naveen Reddy

Hi, any recommendations on where to book online for a single on a luxury 2-day cruise? Everywhere I see, I see a surcharge or 2 people per room.

Hi Naveen, I looked at many places and companies and so far I’ve seen a single supplement. It ranges from $50-110. I did read an advice online that you can try to contact the company and see if they will can waive the single supplement especially during low season. Hope this helps!

i am also a solo male traveller and plan to take the ha long bay 3d2n cruise in april, 2024. is there a cruise company that you or your contacts can recommend?? thank you.

Hi Nelson, I went on Paradise Elegance Cruise and Majestic Halong Cruise. Both are about the same in quality although I think the cruises now are much nicer. Perhaps you can start with these?

Tips for Solo Traveler in Halong Bay

Tips for Solo Traveler in Halong Bay

Rachel Tran

Nowadays, traveling alone has becoming a new trend for a lot of people, especially young ages. You get opportunity to indulge yourself fully. Here, we will show you some useful yet necessary tips for a solo travelers in Halong bay.

1. Beware of Single Supplement

If you are solo traveler, don’t forget to pay attention on single supplement fee. Most of cruises operators on Halong bay don’t provide single cabin/room option for solo travelers. If you choose to stay in a single cabin, you are not required to pay for extra fee (but the single room/cabin could be smaller than a double one). Of course, if you’re willing to pay a supplement for single occupancy of a double cabin, you can enjoy your trip in a larger cabin. In general, the supplement can range from 20 to 100 percent of the trip cost.

2. Halong Bay or Bai Tu Long Bay, Your Choice!

It is highly recommended for solo tourists to research carefully before booking a cruise to discover Halong Bay fairly land. As you may know, the whole area of Halong Bay site can be divided into central Halong bay, western Bai Tu Long bay , and Lan Ha Bay near Cat Ba Island . They all have the same beauty of natural lime stones and karts. While central Halong bay has long been a popular tourist area, Bai Tu Long bay remains a less visited place.

If you’re a dynamic traveler and want an exciting cruise, you can choose to visit Halong Bay’s central (the price is normally cheaper than Bai Tu Long bay cruise). If you are a type of adventure traveler; or you want to explore the mysteries and further of Halong bay; or you just love a quiet place to relax and run away from the bustle and hustle city, visiting Bai Tu Long bay is a perfect choice.

3. Meet New Friends/Fellow Travelers and Become a Group

The best way to make new friends is travelling alone. Young travelers can easily take part in a group of other travelers and having fun together.

Kayak for one? Don’t worry it’s totally fine and there are many of solo riders out there paddling around the bay. You will ride in the back seat of a two seated kayak.

Vietnam: Hanoi, Halong Bay & Trekking Pu Luong

Here's an honest, unbiased review of my trip to Vietnam and Cambodia with G Adventures. First of all, I've never been on any adventure trip before, however I went with my wife, her sister and her husband, as three of us are turning 60 this year and we thought we'd do something a little different for a change. Booked with G Adventures, as my sister is a travel agent and said they'd never had any problem with them. First of all, we initially flew to Singapore for three nights and did Raffles, the Marina Bay Hotel and the cables cars etc. TIP - 1. they've got a modern underground, which is easy to use. 2. Raffles Long Bar opens at 11am, so get there sharp before the queues start. 3. Singapore is expensive, so beware. We then flew up to Hanoi where we met up with our tour guide (CEO) Phi Hoang and the other ten travellers. From then on we travelled down through Vietnam by bus, train and plane, as well as a night on a boat at Ha Long Bay. TIP - 1. Visit Train Street in Hanoi, it's fun having a train almost take your nose off ! 2. Do the bike ride in Hoi An, experience the free-for-all main roads, before heading out into the fields. Everybody in the group loved it. 3. There's a vegetarian brunch at a Monastery - I love my meat, but it was one of the best meals I've had. 4. Yes, the toilets are basic on the overnight train journey, but the cabins are clean, so pack plenty snacks and have fun. My wife and her sister were a little apprehensive beforehand, but it was a laugh and Phi came round all the cabins taking photos of us. 5. Don't miss the Cu Chi tunnels in Saigon - a must do experience. Try and do the war museum afterwards, which is very informative. We then headed by bus into Cambodia where we did the Killing Fields at Phnom Penn - a very sobering experience. We also did the sunrise at Angkor Wat, an amazing series of temples only a 15 minute drive from our hotel in Siem Reap. We then had a long bus journey to Bangkok where we spent the night, before flying home the following day. Phi was with us the whole trip and was an outstanding guide. If you're lucky enough to get him as your CEO then you'll have a superb time. He speaks excellent English, keeps you updated every day on what's happening, as well as setting up a Whatsapp group where he adds more information, as well as posting photos he takes of the group. He also arranges an evening meal every night at a local restaurant, which you can attend or you can do your own thing. At every activity though, you feel he's always floating around, keeping everybody safe and watching out for any issues. On that note, I never felt threatened or in danger in any of the countries we visited. The locals were always friendly and helpful. We stayed in quite a few hotels. Some were more basic than others, but all were clean, had hot water and air-con. TIP - it's very hot and humid, so pack plenty insect repellent. We had a lot better time than we thought we would and that was a lot down to our CEO. There's several long bus journeys in the trip, but there's regular stops along the way to break things up. We'd definitely use G Adventures again.

Mystique Vietnam Vacation In 13 Days by Realistic Asia

It was our third trip to Vietnam, before we were visiting it for a beach break, but for this time we decided to take and adventure trip in the mountains. We have heard a lot from other travelers about Sapa and Ha Long Bay and wanted to visit it. We were unconfident to arrange this trip by ourselves and decided to book it with Realistc Asia. It was a great decision for us. Our travel advisor Hien has recommended us this trip as we wanted to get a full insight into Northern Vietnam. We couldn’t expect more! We visited local villages, and the market in the mountains, met many interesting people. Personally I was blown away with the views in Mu Cang Chai, it is probably one of the most beautiful places I ever visited. For those who want to see rice terraces I recommend to go there. We got all what we wanted: adventures, less visited areas, beautiful sceneries and authentic experience. Hien, thank you so much for organizing everything! You are the best!

It was the first time that I travelled Solo solely for the purpose of travel and turned out to be a trip of lifetime! Of course Intrepid tour leader - Cong, operated like clockwork, thought ahead and no derailment of trip in anyway at all! But what made it fantastic was the group of people who came on this trip and I am sure each one of us will share the same sentiment. Look forward to many more…

  • Halong Bay: How to Choose The Best Cruise In 6 Easy Steps

how to choose best halong bay cruise recommendations

Having trouble choosing the best Halong Bay cruise for you? I feel you, I went through the same to avoid scams. That’s why I’ve put together this little guide to help. 6 steps for you to make a decision!

Picking the right cruise in Halong Bay was a largely overwhelming process to me.

Dozens of different boats available , each with their own route, facilities, activities and prices made me go nuts! To make it worse, there was no website or resource that truly helped me what to expect or even what to look for. This is the travel drama I’m trying to solve here.

I’ve put together a 6-step guide for you to pick the right cruise tour and give you some peace of mind . But first, a quick overview and why you should take a cruise in Ha Long Bay the first place.

Halong Bay Overview

Halong Bay is located around 144km east of Hanoi in the Gulf of Tonkin. With over 1,600 islands and islets – mostly inhabited – it’s one of the most popular travel hotspots in Asia .

In ancient Vietnamese, it literally means “descending dragon”. According to the legend, when Vietnam was being attacked by northern invaders, the Jade Emperor sent the Mother Dragon (and her children) to descend to earth and help defend the country. The Vietnamese gave the name “Halong” to the place where it first appeared as a sign of gratitude.

Today Halong Bay is also one of the main tourist hotspots in Vietnam , receiving more than 6 million travelers each year, mostly on cruise boats.

Why go on a cruise in Halong Bay

how to choose best halong bay cruise guide recommendations tips halong beach

We took the classic cruise option in Halong mainly for convenience . You’re not only buying a boat ride. It also means you don’t need to worry about travel plans, activities, accommodation or food. There’s no human in this planet to which this idea does not sound good.

You will still get the feeling of an organised tour and lose some independence. In some of the most touristy itineraries, you can even feel like cattle.

I don’t like organised tours – in fact I more and more hate them – but in Halong I can see advantages in doing a cruise. It allows you to not only see Halong Bay from where it’s truly powerful, from the sea, but also to navigate to remote areas you’d never reach on your own.

Halong Bay Cruise Tips: 6 Key steps

#1 decide how long you want to go..

There are mainly three types of cruise tours operating in Halong Bay :

  • Day trip cruises
  • 2 Day-1 Night cruises (2D1N)
  • 3 Day-2 Nights cruises (3D2N)
  • 4 Day-3 Nights cruises (4D3N)

Day trip cruises are short journeys created to give you a little taste of the feeling of navigating between forest of islands. You can book day cruises with no overnight stay departing from Hanoi , Halong City or Cat Ba.

In the limit, you can do a long day trip from Hanoi with a half-day cruise in the bay, but I personally don’t see any appeal in this. It’s too rushed and there’s no point in having such a long tiring day!

Overnight cruises are more classic choices and allow some more time to relax and truly enjoy the scenery out in the water. Plus, you get to sleep on board and wake up with a gor-geee-ouuusss view! 2D1N cruises last exactly 24 hours and will suit most travelers. Longer itineraries are recommended for people looking to unwind and explore more remote areas of the bay.

In 3D2N and 4D3N cruises, you are transferred from the main boat to a smaller one for the daily activities, returning to the main ship in the evening.

In a nutshell, how long you stay depends on how badly you need/want to relax and what your budget is. The longer you stay, the more chances you’ll have to navigate through areas far from crowds and to do more outdoor activities.

#2 Decide where exactly you want to go.

how to choose best halong bay cruise map bays

Although the whole area is mostly known as Halong Bay , there are in fact 3 different bays: Ha Long , Bai Tu Long and La Han Bay .

They all have a similar (beautiful) landscape of limestone cliffs, idilic bays, caves and small beaches. However due to massive tourism and a stupidly high number of boats, navigating Halong Bay can be disappointing.

Another point of interest is Cat Ba island. Known as the Jurassic Park island , it boasts a killer combination of lush forest, white sandy beaches and dramatic cliffs and hills.

The cruise boats offer different itineraries to cruise along these points of interest. Very roughly, these can be summarised as in the box below.

Itineraries of cruises in Halong Bay

  • Halong Bay This is the most popular route amongst tourists, but also where you will find the most crowded areas. The water in some of the areas with more boats is oily and dirty. It will often include stops in Ti Top island and the Surprising Cave .
  • La Han Bay & Cat Ba island Some cruise boats offers you the option of sleeping a night in a resort in Cat Ba . Good option if you wish to combine it with a stay of your own in the island for some extra nights.
  • Halong Bay & Bai Tu Long Bay These itineraries combine some of the best of Halong Bay with some more remote areas in Bai Tu Long Bay . It’s more off the beaten path and usually come with a higher price tag.

We were initially thinking of spending all our time in Cat Ba , but in the end we decided to do a 3D2N cruise in Bai Tu Long Bay and squeeze in Ninh Binh in our route.

First time in Vietnam?

Make sure you read my key tips and tricks before going for a safe, worry-free and memorable Vietnam trip. 26 Things To Know Before Visiting Vietnam !

#3 Always double check what’s included.

🇻🇳 VIETNAM | 🔇Retreat. Halong Bay receives more than 6 million tourists every year, mostly on cruise boat tours. In some areas it’s so noisy, crowded and even dirty that you easily forget the scenery around you. Fortunately, some of the more remote aras are able to provide a much better experience. We kayaked here in Bai Tu Long Bay and there were no other boats in sight for the entire afternoon! #kayak #vietnam #vietnamcharm #halongbay #outdoors #ExploreToCreate #PeoplesCreatives #VisualOfLife #NeverStopExploring #WanderOut #Destination_Earth #Travelgram #Wonderful_Places #BeautifulMatters #Fantastic_Earth #LiveOutdoors#TourThePlanet #TheGlobeWanderer #OurPlanetDaily #EarthPix #WeLiveToExplore #EarthOfficial #PassionPassport #MyTinyAtlas #wildernessculture #RoamThePlanet #ThePhotoSociety #TravelPhotography #PassportReady #ExpediaPic Uma foto publicada por BRUN🌎 (@bruno_mb) a Nov 28, 2016 às 9:09 PST

A common rule amongst cruise operators is that everything is included – food, activities, etc – except for the drinks. Double check that.

Read carefully the itinerary proposed by each company and check the daily activities they have. Also, some companies do not include in the price the transportation from Hanoi. Make sure you ask all the questions!

What activities are included in Halong Bay cruises?

  • Visit to Pearl Farm
  • Visit to the floating villages
  • Swimming in a beach
  • Cave exploring
  • Cooking classes
  • Squid fishing
  • Biking (Cat Ba)

Some cruises offer more other activities like dining in a cave or even collecting rubbish from the bay.

#4 Research the cruise boats.

This is key. You’ll notice there is a huge range of boats styles, sizes and quality standards to cater to all types of travelers. Make sure you ask which boat you’re going and do some research online before you pull your wallet. Does it look decent ? How old is the boat? What are the reviews like?

If someone’s trying to sell you a cruise on one of those good-looking dark-wood boats with big red sails, raise a RED FLAG yourself. Since 2012, all ships on Halong Bay have been painted white by government order, so these literally don’t exist anymore.

The number of passengers it can hold is important. Remember you won’t be alone aboard. You’ll be eating and doing all the daily activities all together, so the number of people doing all that affects tremendously your experience. I’d say a boat that can hold more than 35 people is already too much.

#5 Prepare your budget.

A cruise in Halong Bay is not the time to suddenly go on a shoestring budget but you don’t need to hurt your wallet either.

A quick search on the web will reveal stories of low quality food, poor accommodation and unwanted animals as your roommates. While you can endure a bad accommodation option for one night in land, while you’re out there in the sea things are different. Because you know, YOU’RE IN THE MIDDLE OF THE SEA. A “simple” food poisoning can turn into a nightmare aboard! Be smart.

Do some research and/or ask around and try to get a sense of what’s a good deal. Always take into account not only the boat itself, but what’s included on the entire tour. This means activities, food, transportation to/from Halong , etc.

If you’re booking through a travel agency in Vietnam , prepare to negotiate hard, but come with a maximum budget in mind and stick to it. If you’re booking online, start comparing prices with Halongbaytours.com or Booking.com which have a large offer of Halong Bay cruises.

Sort out your Halong Bay cruise today

#6 book through the right place..

There are many tourist scams in Vietnam and people looking for cruises in Halong Bay are one of the best targets. Do not go walk in into any hole-in-the-wall travel agency. More than anywhere else, Vietnam is the place to research beforehand and try to find places recommended by other travelers. This is one of my biggest tips I give someone heading to Vietnam .

I would strongly advise against booking through your hotel. I got some quotes from the hostel I was staying in Hanoi and they were absolutely terrible. Far worse than anywhere else I’ve checked.

Surprisingly, I also don’t think contacting the cruise companies directly is worth it. I contacted at least a dozen of them and in all of them the price were more expensive than through an agency.

The solution is contacting a reliable tour agency. Do your research, check reviews, ask around. To make your life easier, here’s a convenient online option for all sorts of cruises in Halong Bay .

Halong Bay travel information

Best time to do a cruise in halong bay.

halong bay cruise in ha long weather best time to go

There are cruises throughout the whole year, choosing the best time to go depends on what you look forward to the most. Considering the crowds and weather factors, it’s usually from late February to April that you can expect the best conditions to cruise Halong .

Still, here’s a breakdown to help you a bit more.

When to do a Halong Bay Cruise

  • Spring time – February to April Dry weather and getting warmer and warmer as the summer approaches. The only con is that there will be more tourists in the water, some spots might be too crowded!
  • Summer time – May to August It’s the warmest but also the rainiest period of the year. In sunny days, it’s great for the daily activities, specially kayaking and swimming.
  • Autumn time – September to November It’s a relatively uncrowded time of the year in Halong , however the weather can be a bitch. Cancellations due to rough sea conditions are more frequent.
  • Winter time – December & January Although it hardly ever rains and there are fewer tourists, this is also the coldest time of the year – expect temperatures between 15 to 20C and some more foggy days. Not the best time to swim.

How to get to Halong Bay from Hanoi

The big majority of travelers get to Halong from Hanoi , the capital of Vietnam .

For the common of mortals, Halong is reached by bus/car from Hanoi , in a journey that takes around 4 hours. It may vary slightly due to weather and road conditions. This trip should be inexpensive and is often included in the cruise package (always double check though).

Hai Au Aviation has recently started a seaplane service between Noi Bai airport in Hanoi and Tuan Chau Marina in Halong , cutting the time to 45 minutes. This will cost you at least 6 million Dong though!

My experience in Halong Bay

how to choose best halong bay cruise guide recommendations tips halong islands

I usually don’t like organised tours and this one wasn’t exactly cheap, but the idea of having EVERYTHING sorted out for 48h was appealing enough.

Since I was already paying big bucks for a cruise, I wanted one that was able to explore more remote areas. In the end we booked a 3 day/2 night cruise in Hanoi , aboard the Cristina Diamond Cruise with an itinerary farther out into Bai Tu Long Bay . We paid 4,540,000 dong each.

Transport from Hanoi was reliable and efficient. Right from the get go they knew your names and subsequent travel plans to Ninh Binh (we booked everything through the same agency). The boat looked very good from the outside – I’d say better than 90% of the ones I saw in Halong ! On the inside, the room was quiet and clean, although a bit small.

During the daily activities, you’re transferred to a smaller boat. From Tai Chi at 6:30 in the morning until squid fishing after dinner, passing through kayaking and swimming, there’s always things to do.

Overall, I’m glad I did the cruise. Service was very high quality and food was delicious at all times. The highlight was definitely to kayak the waters of Bai Tu Long with no other boats in sight. Breathtaking!

There are only thing I can point out that I quite didn’t like. The first was the weather. It was always cloudy and chilly all the time which was a true bummer.

The other thing was our third day plan, which ended up being too touristy for my taste. We slept in an area with dozens of other boats and we ended up visiting the Surprising Cave along with TONS of other people. On the other hand, this made us realize how lucky we were to enjoy the quietness of the previous day.

Not the most luxurious option, but great value experience. Meals are not included via this link. Book now >>

Halong Bay Blog Review

It’s not a coincidence Halong Bay has been declared an UNESCO World Heritage Site AND one of the New 7 Natural Wonders of The World . The limestones cliffs, the calmness of the sea together boast dramatic landscapes and creates an unique aura of mystery.

Even in cloudy days, you can see how special is this place. It’s relaxing, perfect to unwind and it makes you feel insignificant.

For me the highlight were definitely the kayaking sessions, which were as memorable as the one in Dubrovnik.

how to choose best halong bay cruise guide recommendations tips halong kayak

Yet massive tourism is clearly threatening Halong Bay already. At least in some areas. You can see it in the hundreds (!) of boats cruising around or in the oily water with trash.

If you’re splurging on a cruise, make sure you choose one that is able to provide you a more authentic experience, as away as possible from crowds and scams. Only the real Halong where you can feel in touch with nature is worth the high price tag. Otherwise, you are better off going to Ninh Binh , appropriately nicknamed “Halong in land” .

Update (May 2017): Extra port fees for cruises departing from Tuan Chau and increased entrance fees have been applied from April 2017. Don’t be surprised if your cruise trip become more expensive compared to last year.

Additionally, many cruises will provide transportation to and from Hanoi, which can be super convenient.

So let’s dive into all the details so you can have the best Halong Bay Cruise!

What is Halong Bay, Vietnam

halong bay cruise solo

Halong Bay is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and covers over 107,000 acres. There are 1600 islands and islets that are made up of limestone pillars. Most of the islands and islets are uninhabitable to humans and serve as a home to birds and marine creatures.

Halong Bay is used for tourism, marine transport, fisheries and the daily activities of people living and conducting their business in Halong Bay.

While the landscape is stunning to any passersby, there is even more than meets the eye. Due to coastal erosion many of these natural limestone islands have formed arches and caves. And depending on the tide, there are beaches people can hang out on.

Best Time To Visit Halong Bay

Fall season (September-November) is the best time to visit Halong Bay.

  • September: 77 – 98°F (25 – 37°C)
  • October: 71 – 82°F (22 – 28°C)
  • November: 66 – 77°F (19 – 25°C)

Weather is pretty moderate with a lower chance of rain and storms. But you can expect this time to be the most crowded and peak pricing. Temperatures can be relatively hot and rainy in early September and will start to get a bit more chilly toward the end of November. So ideally, October is the best month for a Halong Bay Cruise.

Spring season (Mar-May) can be another great time to visit Halong Bay. Temperatures tend to be 65 – 90°F (18.5 – 32°C) While temperatures start out moderate in March and will gradually become more hot and humid toward the end of May. It’s typically less crowded and you can snag some great deals on a Halong Bay Cruise during this time.

Emily enjoying a glass of wine on a Halong Bay Cruise in front of a limestone pillar

Winter season (December-February) is the second busiest time for Halong Bay cruises. This is mainly due to the holidays like Christmas, New Years, & more importantly, Tet (Vietnamese New Year) Temperatures during winter can range between 58 – 68°F (15 – 20°C). But because of the temperatures, swimming is less ideal during this time.

Summer season (June-August) is the least popular time to visit Halong Bay. It is considered the rainy season in Halong Bay and you can expect heavy rainfall and possible typhoons.

Summer temperatures range from 78 – 98°F (25.7 – 37°C) and are very humid. But with that being said it can also be the least crowded, you can find some great prices on cruises, and warm temperatures for swimming in the bay.

If you can time the weather correctly to avoid rain, summer season has the longest daylight hours. Plus less pollution and fog for the clearest blue sky days. Therefore, it can also be a great time for photography.

How Long On A Halong Bay Cruise?

Sunset on a foggy night in Halong Bay

There are tons of different cruise lines and durations for Halong Bay cruises. With cruises as short as 4 hours long to extended trips of 5 days/4 nights out on the water.

If you are short on time, then you might choose a half-day cruise. But for the effort to get to Halong Bay, it is likely you might want to explore the area for longer.

We would highly suggest at least doing an overnight cruise in Halong Bay. And personally, it felt very rushed on our overnight cruise, so I think we would have enjoyed the 3-day, 2-night cruise better, just to be able to enjoy the scenery a little more.

And if budget isn’t an issue, there are private charters that go for 5 days/4 nights. These charters get to explore deeper into the bay and escape the crowded areas.

How Much Is A Halong Bay Cruise?

The price for a Halong Bay cruise differs significantly depending on the season you choose to go. Plus the further in advance you book, the better pricing you are likely to get.

Jake and I visited in January 2023 & paid $169 USD per person for a 2-day/1-night cruise .

For a half-day cruise in non-peak season, you can expect to pay as low as $20 per person. And upward to thousands of dollars for a 5-day cruise in peak season. But in general, I’d say it’s typical to pay around $150 per person for an overnight Halong Bay Cruise.

There is an additional surcharge for single cabins. It’s typically around $50 and due at the time of cruise check-in.

Also if you are planning to cruise on Christmas, New Year, and National Holidays, there is typically a surcharge of 15%.

How To Choose A Halong Bay Cruise

Aerial Drone View of Halong Bay

There are a few different factors when choosing a Halong Bay Cruise. Such as duration, price, star-rating, and experiences on board.

First, start with the duration you want for the cruise. We suggest at least an overnight 2-day cruise. But if you have the time and money, you might splurge for a 3-5 day trip instead. And if you are short on time, the half & full-day cruises still pack in a lot of adventures and sightseeing that will be worth the money.

Next is certainly price. As I mentioned above, the earlier you book, the cheaper the cruise tends to be. And if you visit in non-peak season, you can likely grab a great deal. If you book during holidays, do expect an additional surcharge.

Check the star rating of the boat. The lower the star rating, likely a lower quality boat that maybe needs some updating. And you will likely get a more inexperienced crew (this isn’t always bad). Obviously, if you choose a 5-star boat, the rooms and service should hopefully reflect the star rating.

It can be hard to find the “star rating” on websites like Viator and Get Your Guide. Although if it is a 5-star boat, then the tour company will likely add it to the title. Otherwise, you can expect many of the cruises to be 3 or 4-star ratings.

Qaulity of a room on the Renea Halong Bay Cruise

Do be a little wary about the pictures shown of the boat and rooms. These pictures were likely taken before much wear and tear from guests. You will be traveling on salt water and on a moving vessel. Therefore, some of the rooms and other features on the boat might be a little worn out.

Our room was pretty well kept, but the exterior of the boat looked in rough shape. There are also tons of different room options, such as having your own private balcony or private suite room, etc. Obviously, the nicer the room, the higher the price.

Lastly, you might choose a certain cruise ship depending on the onboard experiences. It is likely your cruise will do a kayaking trip, cave exploration, cooking demonstration, and exercise class.

Most of the places visited are the most popular tourist attractions. But if there are certain areas you really want to see over others, then you might need to explore deeper into the details of a specific cruise ship. (More details below about popular stops on a Halong Bay Cruise).

How To Book A Halong Bay Cruise

The Renea Halong Bay Cruise Ship

There are tons of helpful Halong Bay tour companies that can help you book a Halong Bay Cruise. Our personal favorite websites for choosing local tours are Viator and Get Your Guide. These websites help set up transportation, provide local tour guides (typically an English-speaking guide), and communicate well before the tour starts.

Top Halong Bay Cruises:

Half Day (4-Hours) Halong Bay Boat Tour from Halong City

This is one of the cheapest cruises through Halong Bay and only lasts about 4 hours long. While this tour might be short, it certainly is not a lazy cruise ride. Guests will have the opportunity to kayak, visit Dong Thien Cung Cave, and pass by Hon Ga Choi Island (aka kissing rock). If you are looking for one of the best budget cruises, this might be your best option.

Transportation from hotels in Halong City is included. If traveling from Hanoi or another nearby city, you might need to find your own transportation. We use 12GoAsia for the best prices on buses, trains, and taxis.

Do note there is an additional entrance fee for Halong Bay which is 290K VND ($12.50 USD) per person. Plus 142k VND ($6 USD)/person if you want lunch on board.

Full Day – Ha Long Bay Cruise w/ Titop Island & Luon Cave

If you are looking for a full-day adventure in Halong Bay, then this might be the best cruise for you. This action-packed cruise line offers transportation to & from Hanoi. Plus a kayaking adventure at Luon Cave, swimming at Titov beach, a visit through Sung Sot Cave, and Ti Top Island.

2-Day 1-Night Cruise From Hanoi: Ha Long – Bai Tu Long Bay

This is the cruise Jake and I went on when we visited Halong Bay. It is action-packed and you get to see so many of the best attractions in a short time. You get to go kayaking, squid fishing, visit a local cave, spend time at a beach, have a happy hour sunset party, do an early morning Tai Chi class, and enjoy a cooking class.

The trip is all-inclusive, but there is an additional charge for transportation to and from Hanoi, plus alcoholic beverages.

3-Day Lan Ha Bay 5-Star Cruise & Private Balcony Room

This 3-day cruise is on a 5-star cruise ship and offers all the bells and whistles. With a luxury balcony room and more. Day 1 follows a similar itinerary to other overnight cruises.

But on day 2, guests board a smaller boat to explore some of the areas that the cruise boat cannot go through. Then, you head to Viet Hai Village and take a bicycle ride to enjoy the scenery along the village roads and rainforests.

Later, you visit a local family’s house to see the daily life of the local people. Then, guests head back to the boat and continue cruising further into Lan Ha Bay.

If you are looking for a more budget-friendly 3-day cruise, consider the Halong Explorer 3-Day 4-Star Cruise .

Do note some 3-day cruises will pair with overnight guests. Therefore, the day you go explore via a small boat, the larger boat is picking up new guests. This is dependent on whether or not all the guests choose 2 or 3 days.

4 Days Cruise: Halong, Bai Tu Long, Lan Ha Bay & Cat Ba Island

This cruise is a great option if you want to explore the Halong Bay area immensely, and just have time to enjoy the area on water. There is also a swimming pool on board.

This trip is all-inclusive, but additional costs apply for transportation and alcoholic beverages. Do note this Halong Bay tour leaves from Tuan Chau Marina.

5 Days Bai Tu Long – Lan Ha – Halong Bay on Private Cruise

This luxury cruise can accommodate up to 9 guests in 3 different rooms on your own private charter. It’s one of the best options to get off the beaten path and explore some of the less crowded areas in the bay.

This trip is all-inclusive but does not include airfare & transportation to and from Hanoi. This trip is certainly the most expensive, but you will get to explore the best attractions along Halong Bay. Do note this tour leaves from Tuan Chau International Marina.

How To Get To Halong Bay?

Halong Bay is located in Northern Vietnam, about 3 hours East of the city of Hanoi. Many tours will provide transportation or offer assistance for how to get to the cruise port.

Do note there are a few different starting locations. The two most popular harbors are Halong International Cruise Port (aka Bai Chay or SunWorld Port) & Tuan Chau Port . There are a couple more around the bay, but tourism cruises most likely won’t leave from those ports.

If transportation isn’t included in your cruise tour package, then make sure you are going to the right port when booking your own transportation. Taxis will be very expensive at the ports.

If traveling from Hanoi or a nearby city, use 12GoAsia to book your transportation. You can also book transportation from other nearby cities.

What To Wear On A Halong Bay Cruise

Refer to the “best time of year” segment of this post for the appropriate clothing depending on the temperatures you might encounter. But here are items you should bring year-round.

  • Rain jacket
  • Swimsuit (depending on time of year)
  • Sunglasses (Croakies optional)
  • Fancier outfit for happy hour party/dinner (optional)
  • Hiking outfit
  • Hiking shoes/Sneakers

Should You Tip On A Halong Bay Cruise

While tipping isn’t customary in Vietnam, Halong Bay Cruises are looked at as luxury travel. Therefore, it became very apparent toward the end of the cruise that tipping is well accepted on the boat.

The tipping brackets on our boat were broken down into a few different categories:

  • Staff (servers, bartenders, boat drivers, etc)

I’d say 5-10% is a decent place to start if you want to give a tip. Then, you can divvey this up to the staff members. If you feel like they did an exceptional job, you can tip upward of 20+% (this will certainly make their day!).

Is A Halong Bay Cruise Worth It?

Emily looking out of the doors on a Halong Bay Cruise

Our Halong Bay overnight cruise was a memorable experience. If you are traveling around northern Vietnam, then a tour should certainly make the bucket list.

While we got to experience a lot of the bay in just a 2-day, 1-night cruise, I would highly suggest extending it to a 3 or 4-day cruise if you have the time and money.

Cruising in Halong Bay isn’t as cheap as many of the other places in Vietnam. But the natural beauty and panoramic views of the limestone cliffs are not to be missed.

Best halong bay cruise for backpackers [+6 discount tips].

Bradley Williams

If you’re heading to Vietnam, then you simply must visit Halong Bay.

It is widely considered the best thing to do in Vietnam , and is perhaps the most famous area as well.

The problem is that with so many tour operators offering Halong Bay cruises (more than 200), it can be hard to find the right one.

Especially if you are budget backpackers like us!

But don’t worry, cheap Halong bay cruises do exist, and I’m here to help you find them.

In fact, I’ve brought together all of my top tips for visiting Halong Bay as well as a detailed run down of the best Halong Bay cruise for backpackers .

First off, let’s answer some of your most pressing questions ...

Popular questions about Halong Bay cruises

How do you book cheap halong bay tours.

There are a number of ways to book a cruise in Halong Bay, including both offline and online.

If you're not as comfortable booking something online, then you can head to a number of tour operators who operate all across Hanoi.

Or, just go and speak to your hostel/hotel receptionist and they can likely book one for you.

However, these operators usually take a cut and you will instead find the cheapest tours online. Here are the 4 cheapest and best comparison sites we found:

  • Booking.com
  • GetYourGuide

How long is a Halong Bay boat cruise?

It’s up to you!

You can book Halong Bay cruises for as long as you want. However, the most popular packages are for the following:

  • 1 day, 0 nights

These depart from either Hanoi, Cat Ba or Halong City. Essentially, you get a little taste for the bay, but will be rushed to squeeze in everything.

  • 2 days, 1 night

The Halong bay 2 day cruise is the tour we chose, and there’s a better explanation of it below. In my opinion, you should choose at least 1 night, as waking up to the views is what makes the trip so wonderful!

  • 3 days, 2 nights

If you choose an extra night onboard, then here’s what you can expect to do on top:

  • Squid fishing
  • Visiting floating villages
  • Bike riding on Cat Ba island
  • Option to spend the night on Cat Ba island or La Han Bay
  • 4 days, 3 nights

A 4 day, 3 night tour to Halong Bay has to be the ultimate way to relax and unwind! You’ll get to see all of the islands and do all of the activities. If money wasn’t an issue, then we’d have chosen to do this!

What is a typical Halong Bay tour itinerary?

Well, this all depends on the length of the cruise you decide to take.

The longer you are out there, the longer you have to see things. However, here is the standard Halong Bay Tour itinerary for a 2 day, 1 night cruise:

  • Get picked up from your hostel in the morning
  • Drive to Halong Bay and stop off at a halfway point souvenir shop (ridiculously overpriced)
  • Arrive at the boat at midday
  • Set sail and have lunch
  • Go kayaking
  • Visit the pearl farm
  • Go for a swim (optional)
  • Have some drinks on deck and watch the sunset
  • Have dinner
  • Drink the night away
  • Wake up for some early morning on-deck yoga/Tai Chi
  • Have breakfast
  • Head to the Sung Sot caves
  • Back on the boat and sail back to the docks
  • Do a cooking lesson (i.e, make Vietnamese spring rolls)
  • Have lunch on the journey
  • Arrive back about midday
  • Disembark and head home
  • Again, stopping at the stupidly over-priced souvenir shop on the way

What does the tour usually include?

As standard, most Halong Bay tours include the activities listed above, as well as free lunch dinner and breakfast.

They also usually include the transfer to and from Halong Bay.

They don’t include drinks, and be warned, you’re not normally allowed to take drinks onboard.

Instead, you have to pay above the odds for any alcohol, so factor this into your budgeting.

How do you get to Halong Bay?

All of the tours tend to include travel to the Bay within the package.

The journey takes about 4 hours and, after speaking to people, we found that the more expensive your tour, the nicer the vehicle that takes you.

We considered  renting a moped  and riding there, but it all just seemed like too much hassle and the transfer worked out just fine!

When is the best time to do a Halong Bay backpacker cruise?

The best time to do a Halong Bay cruise is whenever there’s no rain and you have clear blue skies.

As such, the best time of year is typically between February and April.

November till January also has low rainfall, but that is also late Autumn/Winter time, so the weather is colder and it is often foggy.

However, it all depends on your luck. We were there in September and we had beautiful clear blue skies the whole time.

However, just 2 days before, all of the tours had been cancelled due to the tropical monsoon that swept through the area. You really can't predict the weather in Southeast Asia!

What do you get fed on board?

Simply put, a lot of fish!

We found that there was at least twice as much food as what we needed (I don't know if the staff eat whatever is left).

It all tastes pretty great, it just depends on what you’re into.

But if you have any allergies or a particular distaste for fish, then message them at the same time you book.

Cazzy did this as she hates fish and can’t eat rice. (I know right, not eating rice in Asia! What?!)

So they made her a few chicken dishes which kept her happy.

The best Halong Bay cruise for backpackers

Ok, so this is why you’re really here! To get the most cruise for your Dong!

Well, luckily for you, me and Cazzy are two of the savviest backpackers you can find! So, safe to say, we did plenty of research before booking a Halong Bay tour.

We spoke to a number of tour operators all across Hanoi, and searched all of the sites online.

So, without further ado, this is the best Halong Bay cruise for backpackers:

Presenting … Rosa Cruise

Rosa Cruise  is, in our opinion, the best value Halong Bay cruise.

We found that the quality of cruises normally falls into one of three tiers: basic, mid-range and luxury.

The Rosa Cruise falls somewhere between mid-range and luxury, but comes at a much lower price tag to its competitors.

You get the full Halong Bay experience, complete with all-inclusive meals and all of the typical things you’d expect to see.

But what set them apart and what makes them the best Halong Bay cruise for backpackers is the quality of the rooms and the fact that they don't follow the throng of other boats that head out on the bay.

Instead, they keep their distance which is perfect as it allows you to get stunning pictures. Like this one …

Rosa Cruise boat

So, how much does Rosa Cruise cost?

We paid $94 each which, as you’ll come to find, is a great price for what you get.

Yes, it was the most expensive thing we paid for in the whole of Vietnam. But, then again, you have to think about what you're getting.

Visiting Halong Bay truly is a once in a lifetime experience. So, compared to the cheapest Halong Bay cruises that come in at around $50 per person, you get a hell of a lot more for that extra $44.

In fact our friends paid just $10 less each for a 1 day tour of Halong Bay! (That’s without the night’s stay, and they had to leave mega early and get back late in the day!)

Plus, as a backpacker, it was lovely to spend a couple days in luxury before we headed off back to the budget hotels!

Our top 6 money saving tips for your Halong Bay boat trip

To help you get the best deal on your Halong Bay tour, I’ve put together all of our best tips!

1. Get £15 off (or currency equivalent), using this sign-up code

Based on all of my research, I found that Booking.com, generally speaking, offer the best Halong Bay cruise prices anywhere online.

And there's another way to make it even cheaper ...

"What, how?!"

Well, by using this link here.

If you've never used booking.com before, and sign up using this link , then you will get an extra 10% off your booking!

Yes, we would also get $20 off our next booking, so you would be doing us a massive favour as well!

Thank you in advance ;)

2. Search all of the price comparison sites

Just because  Booking.com  was cheapest for us, it doesn't mean it will be for you.

In fact, it so often surprises us how much the prices can fluctuate between booking sites.

My recommendation is that, once you find a boat you like, search for it in all the different sites before making your booking.

Also, read the small print for what each one includes.

The site might be able to offer you some additional perks (for example, it might count towards your 11th free night on hotels.com).

Don't worry, I don't expect you to scroll back up to find the tour operators. Instead, here they are for you:

  • BestPrice Travel

3. Speak to the tour operators direct

Again, just because we found it cheapest online, you might be surprised to find a cheaper deal by booking in person.

I can’t recommend any actual stores to visit, though they each seem to offer select cruises (I presume they have certain commission agreements).

Either way, the experience is worthwhile as they can answer all of the questions you have in person, which is always nice.

4. See if you can get a group discount

If there’s a large group of you looking to book a cruise, then you  might be able to negotiate a better deal.

The tour operators don’t usually have any flexibility when they’re booking for one or two people but, if there’s a lot of you then I have no doubts they could work something out.

5. Decide early on what you want to do

It’s a good idea to get an idea of what your budget is and how long you want to spend out there as soon as you can.

That makes the whole search process a lot easier.

Above, you can find more information on the extra things you get from a 2 and three night cruise.

For us, we though the extra day on the boat didn't really warrant the leap in price.

In fact, you don't even spend the second day on the boat! Instead, they send you to an island for the day whilst the boat heads back to the mainland to drop people off and pick up more people!

6. Book in advance

If you leave things till the last minute then there’s a chance you’ll get a flash deal.

However, if you are at Halong Bay in peak times of the year, then you will likely find that many of the best value Halong Bay cruises are already booked up.

As such, I recommend checking and booking online as far in advance as possible.

BONUS TIP: Think about alcohol

If you're planning on having a few drinks onboard your Halong Bay cruise, then remember, it will cost at least 2 times as much as drinks on land.

This is where the boats make extra money, so factor it into your budgeting.

One thing I would absolutely not recommend (and what we certainly didn't do), is the following:

  • Buy a bottle of water and empty it out in Hanoi
  • Fill it with cheap Vodka
  • Carry that bottle of “water” on with you (store it in a bag)
  • Even if they catch you, it’s unlikely they’ll take the water off you
  • Keep it tucked away in your room and make casual bathroom breaks throughout the night

We would never think of doing this (nor would we sneak on a few cheeky ciders as well). Just saying.

Halong Bay: Choosing the Right Cruise for Your Travel Style

  • Solo Travelers
  • Backpackers/Budget Travelers

Depending on who you’re traveling with, different kinds of cruises offer different services. We want to make sure you choose the right cruise that fits your travel style.

Halong Bay: Choosing the Right Cruise for Your Travel Style

Solo travelers pretty much have the world at their feet because they can just follow their own wishes without having to cater for anyone else. Therefore, solo journeys depend entirely on the traveler’s personal preferences.

Crusing Halong bay is actually a great option for solo travelers as they are jam-packed with activities that keep you busy and entertained, and also give you the opportunity to meet other guests from other parts of the world.

Depending on what kind of trip you want, we suggest browsing cruise itineraries of different cruise operators online before booking anything. This way you can choose a busy itinerary with many scheduled activities or, a relaxing itinerary with just some swimming, sunbathing and relaxing. It’s also completely down to the individual to decide their price range - cruise types range from ultra-budget to ultimate luxury so the world is truly your oyster.

For a more sociable trip it is advisable to pick a cruise line with more cabins , as this means more people around to talk to and get to know. For a quieter trip, choose a cruise line with less cabins.

TIP: solo travelers traveling in the off-peak season should look online for any deals aimed at solo travelers - this could get tourists a good discount off their trip!

For travelers on a shoestring budget, looking for a good time full of friends and fun, it’s possible to find Halong cruises at under $100 for 2 days and 1 night . The best place to find these ultra discounted cruises would be at travel agencies around the Old Quarter of Hanoi. The travel agencies display their prices on a board outside so you just need to walk around and find the right deal for you. Look for a cruise that includes a range of activities to help give you some amazing life experiences. Additionally, if you want to meet lots of new people, opt for a ship with more cabins. More cabins means more friends.

TIP:Cheaper cruises may bring some discomfort as the boats will be older, meaning noisier engines - travelers are advised to bring earplugs!

An alternative option for backpackers is a stay on Castaway Island in Lan Ha Bay for a memorable experience. Stays on this private island are 3 days and 2 nights long and are operated by Central Backpackers Hostel found in Hanoi’s Old Quarter. The itinerary for Castaway Island includes days full of activities and evenings of games and drinks.

To visit Halong Bay while keeping outgoings to an absolute minimum, the best option might be a day trip. This way you can pay around $30 - $40 USD to visit Halong Bay for 4-6 hours, barely making a dent in your wallet.

TIP: When booking a cruise, make sure that food, water, Hanoi transfer and activities are included in your trip price - you don’t want to end up paying any extra hidden fees.

Halong Bay is a truly wonderful choice for a romantic getaway. Many choose to visit Halong Bay on their honeymoon, or just to enjoy the scenery while enjoying some one-on-one time with their loved one.

For travelers honeymooning in Halong Bay, we recommend choosing one of the luxury cruise lines for an idyllic trip. Orchid Cruises or Bhaya Cruises are highly recommended.

If you have the spare cash, why not splash out a little and book the L’Amour Junk private charter boat, for the ultimate privacy and romance. If you don’t want to break the bank, Indochina Junk also do cruises with boats that have 14 or so cabins, meaning that you still get the luxury experience but at a much lower price.

TIP: Be sure to let the ship’s crew know if it’s your honeymoon as they may go the extra mile to make the trip super special.

If you’re traveling with young children there are three important things to consider when looking for your cruise: safety, cabin suitability and a kid-friendly service. Many cruise lines have cabins catering to couples or solo travelers, so parents with young children need to keep an eye out for rooms that fit the whole family. Some luxury cruise lines provide cabins that are particularly suitable for families with young children. Parents should look for terrace suites with enough room for two adults and one or two children or deluxe cabins with connecting rooms.

Parents traveling with younger children should also keep an eye out for kid-friendly deals: many cruises will charge a discounted price for children under the age of 12, and often kids under 4 do not have to pay. Please note that children aged 12 and up are usually considered adults and are charged adult prices.

Another option for families is to hire a private cruise. Booking a private cruise means that you have the whole boat to yourself and often you can make your own itinerary. It also means that the whole ship’s crew are there to cater to you and your family, making it easy to keep everyone in the family happy! Whichever option is right for your family, you should ensure that the activities offered on the cruise are suitable for your family. Peruse the cruise itineraries carefully before selecting and consider which activities are the most suitable before booking.

On the whole, when you’re traveling with your loved ones, it’s very important to make sure you choose a reputable cruise company that has a stellar safety record.

I did extensive research before I decided on which cruise to choose, and I booked the Le Journey Cruise . I made my choice by reading a lot of reviews and looking at photos of the rooms. Also as it’s a smaller boat with only 16 cabins, I didn’t have to deal with the crowds.

Plus, they are a reputable and ethical tour. The staff does a phenomenal job caring for the hosts, as they are fun and extremely helpful. Cruising at Halong Bay was certainly the highlight of my trip to Vietnam . I chose the 3 days 2 nights overnight cruise , which allowed me to see more of the magnificent bay.

If you’re looking for a romantic time in Halong Bay, this 2-Nights on Best Balcony Cruise is the perfect option. Ran by Halong Bay Cruise Hunters, you know you’re in for a fantastic time as this company has thousands of reviews on Tripadvisor.

For starters, this 3D/2N cruise takes you to some of the most beautiful bays in the area including Halong, Lan Ha, and Bai Tu Long. All meals are included with this cruise as well as a cooking class, Tai Chi lesson, and kayaking. Just keep in mind that there’s a surcharge per person if you’re cruising during the Christmas season, Chinese New Year, or New Year’s Eve. You’ll also have to pay extra if you’re fancying a massage.

5. Halong Bay and Bai Tu Long Bay (3-Day & 2-Night)

Kayak view ethical tour in Halong Bay

DAY 2: Bai Tu Long Bay – Kayaking, Tai Chi, Swimming, & sightseeing

Day 3: Vung Vieng Fishing Village

This 3-day Bai Tu Long Bay and Halong Bay overnight cruise is a great off-the-beaten-path option. Although many of the cruises simply stay in Halong Bay, this ship will take you on a more hidden path so you’ll have a quieter experience.

All meals are included with this cruise, as well as all entrance fees and activities such as the Tai Chi lesson, cooking class, and pre-dinner cocktail party.

The one thing to note with this cruise is that there doesn’t seem to be as much included on the itinerary. That isn’t necessarily a bad thing as you’ll have plenty of time to relax, admire the views, and get involved with the onboard activities. However, if you’d prefer an action-packed itinerary where you’ll get to see a lot within a short amount of time, you might want to go for one of the other options in this guide.

Top Activities To Do In Halong Bay

There are plenty of awesome things to do in Halong Bay. Whether you’re looking to explore by kayak, spend some time swimming, or take a trip on a bamboo boat, there’s something for everyone. You’ll also get to visit a variety of incredible places so let’s take a look at what you’ll be getting up to…

1. Sailing among the majestic limestone kasks

I spent a good amount of time on the boat, sailing, taking pictures, flying the drone or just relaxing on the roof deck while enjoying some very yummy (high alcohol content) cocktails. I felt that I was really on vacation and sometimes it’s so important to slow down and enjoy the magical view, especially if you’re in Halong Bay!

2. Boating on the floating Villages

The cruise line took us to a harbor near some small floating fishing villages. We got picked up by locals with their row boats and they took us along the bay. Each boat held 6-8 people.

We could see the beauty of the mountains very close up. It was intriguing to see the floating villages and be able to observe the families with their dogs living their normal lives in the same way, for so many generations. It was nice and relaxing, and I took many beautiful photos during the tour.

3. Visit a Pearl Farm

Halong Bay Cruises often include a visit to the area’s thriving Pearl Farm. This farm was originally opened in 1995 and owned by a Japanese company until it was sold to locals. Covering around 74 acres and home to around 3,000 cages, it’s rather impressive.

During your visit here, you’ll get to learn all about how pearl cultivation is done as it’s not a simple process. Throughout the tour, you’ll get to see the floating rafts where the pearls are grown, the processing rooms, and the showroom where you’ll see the final product.

This is one of the most interesting places to visit in Halong so try to look for a company that includes it in their itinerary. As the Peal Farm is around 15 miles (24 km) from Halong City, you’ll need to be on a 2D/1N or 3D/2N package to visit this destination.

4. Visit Caves during your Halong Bay Tour

Depending on the cruise company you choose, most likely you will visit one of several natural caves on an island (weather permitting). It’s just amazing to think that some islands are hollow and there are lovely formations inside.

If you’re lucky to have a good tour guide, they will also give you an explanation of the history of the cave and an overview of the formations. The view from the top of the cliffside was outstanding, as we could overlook the whole bay and the junk boats.

Cave tour at Halong Bay

5. Visit other islands in Halong Bay

Some overnight cruises in Halong Bay offer to visit other islands during the tour. If you want to experience more of the bays in this area, I’d recommend choosing a 3D/2N cruise as this allows you to travel a further distance.

To give you a rough idea, here are some of the other bays that are often included:

  • Cat Ba Island : Cat Ba is the largest island in Halong Bay and is famous for its wild and rugged beauty. Half of the island is located within Cat Ba National Park and other areas are relatively untouched. Although not as popular as Halong Bay, tourism is starting to increase here and many tours now include a visit to this island in the package!
  • Lan Ha Bay : This bay is located in the Gulf of Tonkin and is much less touristy compared to Halong Bay. However, it’s just as beautiful and if you can you’ll want to visit. Boasting undisturbed beaches, awesome hiking trails, and a unique ecosystem, Lan Ha Bay has a lot to offer. Some tours include a visit to both bays so I’d recommend choosing that option if possible.
  • Bai To Long : Lastly we have Bai To Long – one of the largest bays in the area. Although relatively undeveloped compared to other bays in the area, the beauty here is breathtaking. Add that to the fact that you won’t have to share this place with hordes of tourists and you’ve got a sure-fire winner. The pollution here is very low too compared to other bays in the area which is another reason to visit!

tips to be in shape for your vacation

6. Kayaking & swimming in Halong Bay

The Halong Bay cruise overnight tour I chose, offers kayaks and it was a highlight of my cruise, so I recommend taking advantage of it. They anchored the junk boat while we had the chance to explore the nearby area at our own pace. It’s an opportunity to see the limestone cliffs close up.

In some instances, you will be able to explore caves, which unfortunately didn’t happen for me in the area where our boat left us. I was able to go to different beaches and just admire the formations.

But please, make sure you are safe and that you have a good conditional kayak, you are offered a life vest, and that you are paddling your kayak in a safe area far from the big fish boats.

Kayaks - ethical way to tour Halong Bay

7. Taking a trip on a Bamboo Boat

There are plenty of kayaking opportunities on Halong Bay overnight cruises but this experience is something special. Many companies also offer you the chance to explore parts of Halong Bay via bamboo boat – a mode of transport that is often used by local fishermen.

Each bamboo boat can carry between 4-6 people and you’ll be maneuvered around the limestone caves by an expert. Although you can learn to do it yourself, it takes a lot of skill to avoid endless rock formations! As you cruise along Halong Bay you’ll also get to listen to the fisherman’s stories and connect with the locals on another level.

This may be a more suitable option for older individuals or families with small children who aren’t up for kayaking.

Halong Bay tips overnight cruises

Aside from having an action-packed itinerary off the cruise, you’ll also have a variety of awesome activities onboard. No matter your hobbies or interests, you’re guaranteed to find something to your liking.

Here are some of the activities you can expect to find on Halong cruises:

Cooking Class: The cruise line offered a “cooking class” that was basically making summer rolls. It was entertaining, but I never really used my new expertise in my own kitchen.

Fishing Squid: Every night after dinner, if you’re interested, they will provide you with fishing poles and you can catch squid. I passed on the fishing but it’s a unique experience to have and the little ones tend to love it!

Sunrise Tai Chi on the Deck: This is one thing I can definitely get behind. Not only will you get to appreciate the beauty of Halong at sunrise but this martial art has a ton of benefits. It not only helps you physically but it’s thought to have emotional and mental benefits too.

Sunroof Bar: This is something you just have to do whilst on a cruise. There’s no better place to relax than at the Sunroof Bar as you can treat yourself to a cheeky cocktail or beer whilst admiring the epic views.

Spa Massages: This activity is an extra charge but it’s a great way to wind down after the day. The Halong Bay overnight cruises can be pretty taxing as there’s so much to do, so this is a great way to relax and recharge.

Local Wine Experience: Not all cruises will offer these so it will depend on your company. If your company does offer this then fantastic as you’ll get a better understanding of the local alcohol.

Vietnamese Cultural Films: Watching these types of films may not be to everyone’s taste but they’re a great way to learn about the country’s culture.

Music Entertainment: Lastly, many cruises will play music throughout the evening which only adds to the ambiance and location. I have done a Halong Bay overnight cruise during New Year, and we had a DJ with a dancing floor. Even the boat crew joined us, and boy, these guys can dance! We had a blast!

Halong Bay Cruise Overnight Conclusion

Halong Bay is the most frequented place in Vietnam and every year millions of people visit, and for a good reason. The opportunity to sail on a junk ship through hundreds of dramatic limestone mountains sticking up from a deep turquoise sea is like nothing else!

There are so many  karst islands  and rocks rising from the water in every direction that it looks mystic. There are caves, secret lagoons, and sea gypsies so you’ll have endless places to explore.

Not only is Halong Bay beautiful, but there are plenty of awesome activities waiting for you if you opt for an overnight cruise. These will give you a chance to immerse yourself in Vietnam’s culture so the cruises really do offer a bit of everything!

Hopefully, this guide has given you a good idea of what the most popular cruise options are, and what you can expect from your trip.

What is Ha Long Bay?

Halong Bay is a beautiful bucket list destination in northern Vietnam. Designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1994, the emerald waters of this large bay are dotted with thousands of small islands.

Limestone rock formations dominate the landscape with hidden caves, dreamy beaches, and lush lagoons adding to the beauty.

The name, Ha Long, translates to “descending dragon”, a nod to the legend of dragons that are believed to have lived in the area.

Despite the popularity among travellers, making the views rather busy, Halong’s magic remains.

A trip here is high up on most people’s Vietnam itineraries, with most opting to take an overnight trip from Hanoi to Halong Bay, or joining an overnight cruise in Ha Long Bay.

How to get to Halong Bay

The Best way to visit Halong Bay is by boat. There’s a whole host of Halong Bay cruise options to choose from, but you first need to get to Halong Bay in order to board a boat.

Tour boats usually leave from a harbour that’s located around a 2-hour drive from Hanoi.

You can opt to travel independently from Hanoi to Halong Bay via the public bus or private car, and then simply join a tour when you arrive. However, most tours include a transfer to and from Hanoi as part of the price.

The transfer to Halong Bay is usually in an air-conditioned minibus and will include a pick-up service from your accommodation in Hanoi.

When you book your Halong Bay cruise, it’s a good idea to check the details of the transfer. Although many of the tours offer a similar itinerary, there can be a difference in the transfer depending on how much you pay.

For example, some of the tours will stop at tourist shops along the way, such as a pearl farm, in the hope that you’ll spend some money.

Different types of Halong Bay cruises

Halong Bay cruises come in all shapes and sizes. From the most basic and budget-friendly, to luxury cruises with private cabins and lavish meals included.

Ha Long Bay day cruise

For those counting the pennies, the day trip cruises are the cheapest option. These day trips begin early in the morning with a pickup from Hanoi and whisk you to the bay.

The itinerary for the day is usually filled with all the same activities as the overnight trips, just on a tighter schedule.

The only real downside is the fact that it can feel very rushed, and you might not feel as if you have enough time to soak up the beautiful scenery.

Ha Long Bay overnight cruise

If you have the time and more money to spend, you could book yourself onto an overnight tour.

The overnight cruises will be much more expensive than the day trips, but the experience of sleeping on a cruise boat in Halong Bay is magical.

The overnight cruises come with a choice of spending either one night and two days, or two nights and three days in Halong .

Ha Long Bay tour mood

There’s also a choice of more adventure-focused ways to explore. Those who want to see a different side of the national park can choose to join a kayak-only tour of the area.

This is a cheaper way to see the sights but also limits the distance you can travel in one day. Some of the cruises can be more focused on partying than experiencing the natural scenery of the area.

If you’re looking to let your hair down during your trip to Halong, it’s a good idea to look up the best party cruises in Halong Bay, so that you’re not disappointed.

No matter what type of cruise you’re looking for, when looking for the best Halong Bay tours, it’s a good idea to read reviews and choose the one which best fits your budget and travel type.

If you’re lucky enough to be spending the night in Halong Bay, then taking part in onboard activities such as tai chi at sunrise is the ideal way to start the day.

These classes are held on the deck, meaning you can gracefully greet the day surrounded by the serene landscape of Halong. Simply dreamy if you ask me.

Night squid fishing

Fishing has been the main industry for the people who live around the bay for generations. You can get a hands-on experience of fishing in Halong Bay with some overnight cruises.

Night squid fishing is a great way to spend a few hours in the evening, especially if you’re not looking to party.

Visit a fishing farm

Fishing farms are amazing places to visit to learn more about life in the area. These watery villages are where many people live and work alongside their families.

The fish produced in the farms are sold across the region and all over Vietnam.

Swim around the boat and/or at a beach

There’s no better feeling than jumping into the cooling waters of the bay on a warm day. Most, if not all, Halong Bay tours will include the option of swimming around the boat or at one of the area’s beautiful beaches.

Pearl farm visit

Although a bit of a tourist trap, the pearl farms are actually a really interesting way to see how many people make their money in the area. It’s also fascinating to see how pearls are grown and harvested.

This is usually done as a stop on the drive over from Hanoi, as opposed to an organised activity during the cruise.

How many days should you spend in Halong Bay?

The amount of time you spend in Halong Bay will depend on a couple of factors.

Halong Bay cruise prices can vary wildly depending on the type of cruise. Travellers with more money to spend can opt for a longer cruise, whereas budget travellers may want to opt for a day trip.

There’s also the time you have to spend in Vietnam overall. If you only have a couple of weeks in the country, then spending more time in Halong may mean you spend less time in other places.

I would say, for most people, the ideal time to spend in Halong Bay is one night and two days.

Is visiting Halong Bay worth it?

Yes. Although super popular, visiting Halong Bay is really worth it. It may be more expensive than other destinations and activities in Vietnam, but it’s a place of stunning natural beauty.

There are lots of fun things to do and places to see. Alongside Ninh Binh , with its stunning Hang Mua Viewpoint , Bai Dinh Pagoda and landscapes, Halong Bay was amongst my favourite places in Vietnam.

If you’re a little worried about the amount of tourists, it might be a good idea to take a look at some of the best Lan Ha Bay cruises, as it’s a good option for a more off-the-beaten-track destination in the same area.

Best time to visit Halong Bay

For the best chance of fine, dry days, October to November is a particularly ideal time to explore Halong Bay. Temperatures are mild and the rain usually stays away.

Visiting anytime between February to April may be cheaper, but it also means that the famous bay won’t look anywhere near as impressive when compared to the dry season as there’s a lot of drizzle and fog (I would know, I visited in March and we were constantly surrounded by grey fog and covered by grey skies).

High season runs between May to September, and sees crowds of domestic tourists also making their way to the region.

What to pack for a Halong Bay cruise

There isn’t really anything specific you need to pack for a Halong Bay cruise, besides the usual travel essentials . But just as a reminder, here are some things you should definitely not forget!

Passport/visa documents: You usually need these to book a Halong Bay cruise in the first place, and you may actually be turned away if you don’t have them with you when you embark. Best to bring just in case.

Raincoat : This is a Southeast Asia essential for wet season travel. Nobody wants to get soaked when you’re out trying to sightsee, or trying to have a luxurious time aboard a boat!

Sunscreen : And when it’s sunny you’ll want sunscreen to protect from sunburn and harmful UV rays.

Sunhat and sunglasses : Same reason as above. It’s not fun getting sunburnt!

Hiking shoes : Some sturdy footwear that you know won’t slip on rocks is a good idea for hiking activities on a Halong Bay cruise.

Water bottle : Many cruises give you complimentary water, but if you have a decently sized refillable bottle of your own, fill that before you come so you have a reserve supply.

Power bank : If you join an overnight cruise you will have sockets to charge in your cabin, but if it’s a day cruise you might not have easy access. So better safe than sorry, you don’t want your phone dying on you as you snap pictures of Halong Bay!

Adapter : There are actually three different plug types used in Vietnam, so it’s best just to get a universal adapter so you’re prepared.

Final thoughts on the best cruises in Ha Long Bay, Vietnam

There you have it, the ultimate guide to the best cruises in Ha Long Bay, Vietnam! Have you been to Halong Bay before? How did you find it? Let me know in the comments below!

Halong Bay is one of those places that was so high on my travel bucket list , it pretty much inspired my whole trip to Vietnam. So obviously, I did loads of research beforehand to ensure we picked the best cruise.

I don’t know if Aspira Cruise (the company we did our Halong Bay overnight cruise with) is the best, but I can definitely say it was luxurious and thorough.

During our 3-day 2-night cruise we visited all of the main sights in Halong Bay, all while being pampered onboard a luxury cruise ship. Despite the grey weather, it was a great experience.

Similarly to Sapa , the main selling point of Halong Bay is the natural landscape, as opposed to temples and history like in Ninh Binh ( Bich Dong Pagoda is amongst these).

If you want to see a truly unique landscape, formed of imposing limestone formations dotted around a beautiful blue lagoon, then Halong Bay is the place for you.

I hope you found my guide to the best Halong Bay cruises useful, and that it will help you choose the right Halong Bay cruise for you! If you have any questions, just let me know in the comments below!

As you are more familiar with the routine on the cruise, more activities will be inserted on the day. The ship will sail to Hang Trai Island, pass by Ang Du area, Hang Du, and Kong Skill Island filming area to reach Coc Cheo Islet. Here, guests can freely kayak and swim without facing the crowd as this is a more private area.

What cruise would you recommend for a young couple in their early 20s. We don’t want a party boat but also don’t want to be the youngest on the boat. Ideally one that caters to a younger clientele. Planning a 2 day, 1 night cruise of halong bay. Want a la crate meals if possible as well, a pool and balcony off room. Do not want a budget cruise. Either luxury or mid range. Thanks.

Dear Audrey D, Thank you for your inquiry. Actually, the cruise trip is for all ages so there may be both the young and the elderly on the boat at the same time. The cruise will offer both set menu and buffet depending on different meals. I would like to suggest you our best luxury and mid-range cruises as follows:

- Mid-range cruises: Genesis Regal Cruise, Peony Cruise, La Casta Cruise, Hermes Cruise, La Pandora Cruise

Should you need further please let me know if you have any other inquiries.

We are planning our first trip to Vietnam (Hanoi). We want to include an overnight cruise at Halong Bay. We are three: my wife and I, and our 16 year old daughter. Questions: 1. How can we make the reservation? 2. What is the available date of cruise if we're planning the trip on June 2024? 3. Is June a good time to do the cruise? 4. The summer program includes a round trip from Hanoi? Thanks.

Dear Mr. Peter Henson, Thank you for contacting us.

1. You can book the cruise directly on our website or we can assist you to book it manually.

2. The availability depends on each cruise and may change day by day. Please share with us the cruise and travel date so we can check the availability accordingly.

3. It will be quite hot in June so it is favorable for water activities. This is also the low season so the price is much better.

4. The round-trip transfer from Hanoi is usually not included in the tour price, except for some cruises with a promotion. Currently, there are promotions for Heritage Binh Chuan, Indochine, Elite of the Seas, Nostalgia, and Stellar of the Seas that you can consider.

Please let me know if you have any other inquiries.

Hello My husband and I are staying at Vinpearl at Ha Long Bay and wan to take an overnight cruise around the bay and caves. Can you please let me know which is your most luxurious cruise and can you pick us up at our hotel

Dear Meeta Seth, I would like to suggest you our best luxury cruises: Essence Grand, Heritage Binh Chuan, Stellar of the Seas, Orchid Classic, Ambassador Cruise, Capella Cruise, Scarlet Pearl Cruise. If you are staying at Vinpearl Halong, you can simply take a taxi to the cruise pier which is in either Halong International Cruise Port in Bai Chay or Tuan Chau Marina. I hope to hear from you soon and please let me know if you have any other inquiries. Best regards, Annie (Ms.)

Dear all, hope this email finds you well. I kindly ask you if its possible booking the transfer to pick up two adults from Hanoi Airport to the cruise. We will arrive on 27.08.2024. Waiting your kindly reply. Best Regards Alessia

Dear Alessia Notaro, If you are from the airport, you can take a taxi to the Old Quarter and then take a bus from here to Halong. Or we offer a private sedan car from the airport straight to Halong at US$ 100 for 2 persons. Please let us know if you have further concerns. Best regards, Annie (Ms.)

Hi, I was hoping to book the Sena Cruise for September 2024. We are three adults (44, 37 and 12) with one boy (10). I have tried to book and it shows that we can share a room (terrace suite)? Is this correct?

Dear Cornelius Moller, Thank you for your question. The Terrace Suite on Sena can accommodate your family of 4, however, one of your children will need to share the bed with you. Should you need further information, please let us know. Best regards, Annie (Ms.)

I'm interested in the 4 days/3 nights ha long bay cruise.

Dear Heidi Mumford, Thank you for contacting us. Some cruises running for 4 days 3 nights are Elite of the Seas, Stellar of the Seas, Capella, Heritage Binh Chuan Cruise. Besides, you can also consider some private 4 day/3 night cruises such as Bhaya Legend Cruise (1 cabin), L’Amour Junk (1 cabin), Prince Junk (4 cabins), Dragon’s Pearl Junk (10 cabins), Dragon Legend (24 cabins). Should you need further information, feel free to contact us. Best regards, Jolie (Ms.)

2 questions: 1- would the price be cheaper if we do not rrequire pickup & drop off in Hanoi ?We would like to be picked up & dropped off a Tuan CHau hotel . 2- At what time the 3D2N tour ends? Do i have enough time to go to Hai Phong to catch the 15:20 flight from Hai Phong to Hue. Also can we be dropped at Hahong airport to try to make it?

Dear Luunam Nguyen, Thank you for your questions. Please find our answers below:

1. The transfer service Hanoi - Halong is not included in the room rate. You can book it separately on your need. The shuttle bus only picks up and drops off at the hotel in Hanoi Old Quarter Area. If you stay in a hotel in Tuan Chau, please take a taxi to the cruise dock. 2. All overnight tours end at around 10:30 - 11:30 am and you will have enough time for your flight. Since the bus only drops guests off in Hanoi, you can book a private car from Halong to Haiphong Airport.

Should you need further information, feel free to contact us.

Hi, I arrive at Hanoi airport at 8am. Would it be possible to join a cruise departing the same day? I'm interested in a one night cruise. Thanks

Dear Logan Ansell, Thank you for your question. If you can leave the airport by 9:00 am, you can make it on time for the cruise on the same day. However, if you have time, I would suggest you to stay in Hanoi for one night and take the cruise trip the following day to avoid the risk of delay. We also offer a shuttle bus round trip from Hanoi Old Quarter so you can save the private transfer cost from the airport to Halong as well. I hope to hear from you soon and please let me know if you have any other inquiries. Best regards, Mary

Total USD 1720.) Which one do you prefer please? Should you need further assistance, please feel free to contact us. Best regards, Rosie (Ms.)

Dear Ms. Anna MacDonald-Johnson, Thank you for your question and it's our pleasure to assist you with your request. May I know if you wish to travel in Jan, Feb or March? If you have a budget range or cruise preference please let us know and we will find the best deal for your group! Best regards,

Dear Mr. Geoff, Thank you very much for your questions. We can arrange the day trip on either 26th or 27th December and the trip would last from noon until 4:00pm approximately. Kindly note that our day cruise departs from Tuan Chau Pier which is about 20 minutes from Bai Chay. You can take a taxi on your own or we can arrange private pick up/ drop off for you at extra cost. Best regards,

Dear SpaBabie, Thank you for your question. Era Cruise will start operating from Dec 24th 2017 so you can surely pick it for your trip in March-April. However, Era Cruise does not go to Bai Tu Long Bay, just Lan Ha Bay. If you prefer to cruise in Bai Tu Long Bay, please consider Signature Cruise ( https://www.halongbaytours.com/cruise/signature-cruise.html ) or Indochina Junk lines ( https://www.halongbaytours.com/indochina-junks.html ). All of these cruises are highly recommended. I hope that helps. Kind regards

Hello, I am staying in Halong Bay for New Years, and I would like to do a cruise party on NYE.. will Glory be doing anything like this on New Years Eve?

Dear Brook Ruth, Thank you for your question. I am sorry that the shuttle bus only picks up from hotel in Hanoi Old Quarter. The train station is 10-15 minutes away and it's difficult to pick up from there due to many passengers getting in and out. As you are arriving early in the morning (train from Sapa arrives in Hanoi around 5:00-6:00am daily), you can get to the central area for breakfast and then go to our office for pick-up and the pick up time for Glory Cruise bus is between 7:30am and 8:00am. Best regards,

Dear Mr. Michael, Thank you for your question. As Halong Bay does not have any airport, the nearest airport is Hai Phong and you consider flying there. If you take Orchid Cruise the distance from Hai Phong Airport to the pier is only 40 minutes. If you take other cruises that depart from Tuan Chau or Hon Gai, the travel time is around 2 hours. Hope that helps!

Are overnight or day cruises better?

If you have time and a higher budget, overnight cruise is always recommended since you will have more time to relax and enjoy the beauty of the bay from day to night. overnight cruises also offer more activities on board and offboard such as cooking class, sunset party, squid fishing, taichi, visiting a fishing village, etc. However, if you just have limited time and want to take a glimpse of Halong bay in an economical way, day cruises could definitely be a choice.

How long does it take from Hanoi to Halong Bay? Does the cruise shuttle bus pick up at the airport?

It takes you around 2.5 hours from Hanoi to Halong Bay by car. The cruise shuttle bus picks up and drops off in Hanoi Old Quarter area (Hoan Kiem) only. If you arrive at the airport, you should book a private car to go directly from there to the port or spend one night in Hanoi first and book the cruise for the next day.

If I want to stay for another night in Halong, does the shuttle drop me off at the hotel in Halong?

The cruise shuttle bus only drops off in Hanoi Old Quarter. You should book a taxi from the port to your hotel in Halong for more convenience.

Are meals and transportation included in the tour?

Transportation is not included in the cruise price. You can book it separately later after booking the cruise. As for meals, all meals mentioned in the program are included. There are normally 1 breakfast, 2 lunches, 1 dinner for 2 day/1 night programs; and 2 breakfasts, 3 lunches, and 2 dinners for 3 day/2 night programs.

What cruises are best for honeymooners?

Cruises with nice cabins and interiors are usually preferred by honeymoon couples. You can refer to some cruises such as Orchid Trendy, Mon Chery, Orchid Classic, Indochine, Heritage Binh Chuan, Heritage Line Ylang, Ginger, etc. Some small junks ideal for those couples who want the utmost privacy is L’Amour Junk, Bhaya Premium, and L’Azalee Premium.

What private cruise is suitable for 10 adults and 4 children?

Orchid Premium cruise could be ideal for your group. The cruise has only 5 ultra-luxury cabins of which there are 2 couples of connecting cabins. All cabins have a private balcony and a private bathroom with an ocean-view bathtub. There are also a jacuzzi pool and spa for relaxation onboard.

What cruises visit Cat Ba Island?

Some cruises visit Cat Ba Island in1-night programs while some add Cat Ba to the 2-night programs only. You can refer to some cruises namely Orchid Classic, Orchid Trendy, Mon Cheri, Peony, Indochine, Stella of the Seas, Heritage Binh Chuan, Capella, etc. Please contact our travel consultants to have a detailed itinerary.

I want to celebrate my anniversary on the cruise. Can I request a bouquet, cake, and a special dinner on the cruise?

Yes. Most cruises can prepare for your anniversary. Some cruises offer complimentary room decoration for your special anniversary. However, a bouquet, cake, and special dinner will be charged based on your need.

Is it easy to get seasick on cruises?

No. Halong Bay is very calm and the boat cruises slowly on the bay. Thus, it is not easy to get seasick on cruise trips

Do all cruises have cabins with balconies? Are cabins on the upper decks worth it?

Not all cruises have cabins with balconies. Luxury cruises (5*) often have all cabins with balconies. Some Deluxe cruises (4*) and Superior cruises (3*) have both cabins with balconies and those with windows only.

Although there might not be a big size difference between cabins on the lower and upper deck, those on the upper deck offer a nicer view from a higher position. Especially, higher-class cabins at a higher rate are always situated on the upper levels with extra benefits and facilities.

Do I have to pay for any expenses onboard or all are included?

The tour price includes cabins, meals, drinking water (not other beverages), sightseeing and entrance fee, tour guide, and activities in the program. Personal expenses such as spa, massage, beverages, kayaking (some cruises), tips,...are not included in the price. You should bring some cash or cards to pay at the end of the tour.

Are cruises canceled if there are heavy rains?

No. Cruises run as normal if there are heavy rains. Just in case of tropical monsoons or storms, the trip will be canceled if there is an official announcement from Halong bay’s management board.

What will be if our trip gets canceled due to storms? Can we get a full refund?

Please note that the decision to cancel a cruise trip is made entirely by Halong Port Authority and often based on wind level. According to our cancellation policy due to bad weather, if the tour is canceled in advance with prior notice, a full refund will be made. On the other hand, if the tour is canceled midway through, you will be charged for services already use (such as shortened cruise trip, or breakfast, or shuttle bus, whichever applies in specific cases).

Can I change the cruise after I have booked one?

According to our booking policy, if you cancel the trip more than 30 days prior to check-in, there is no charge. You can change the cruise after you have booked one if more than 30 days prior to check-in. Otherwise, there will be a surcharge for change since we have to cancel one cruise and book another one. Nonetheless we always try our best to accommodate your change with minimal fee whenever possible so please reach out to us as soon as you can.

If I don't want to join the excursion, can I stay on board?

All activities onboard and off-board are optional. You can skip the excursion and spend the whole time relaxing on the boat.

What experiences do Halong bay cruises offer?

For outdoor activities, you can visit a cave, swim on the beach, kayak, climb up the mountain and watch the overview of Halong bay from above. For onboard activities, you can watch the bay view from the top deck, watch the sunrise and sunset from the private balcony cabin, join a cooking class, fish squid, practice Taichi, relax in a pool onboard, etc.

Are there cabins on Halong day cruises?

At the moment only Ambassador Day Cruise has cabin available. All other day cruises do not have sleep compartment.

Is there any cruise going for 3 or 4 nights in Halong bay?

Yes. There are only a few ships cruising for 3 - 4 nights in Halong Bay with different schedules such as Capella, Stellar of the Seas, Elite of the Seas, Heritage Binh Chuan, Dragon Pearl, Dragon Legend, etc. For most cruises, you can also book 3-4 continuous nights if you want to stay for longer, however, the schedule will be repeated.

How much is a 2 day 1 night cruise?

It really depends on your preference. Budget Cruises (3*) starts from around US$100-130 per person. Mid-range cruises (4*) cost you from US$130 - 160. Luxury Cruises (5*) costs you from US$160 to $400 per person for 2 days 1 night.

What is better, 1 night or 2 nights?

Each program has both advantages and disadvantages. 1-night program is a bit short but more affordable and covers the most outstanding activities in Halong bay, the 2-night program offers a more relaxing schedule and visits farther parts of the bay but is more expensive. Besides, it also depends on available time and personal preference.

halong bay cruise solo

Halong Bay is one of the most famous sites of Vietnam. Most people will have seen picture of this natural wonder of the world and UNESCO Heritage site – a bay with hundreds of the limestone karst and islands, covered by trees and home of many caves, surrounded by emerald water. Mystical – beautiful – peaceful – stunning. There are so many words to describe it, and seeing it you will realise that the name Halong (“descending Dragon”) and the legend behind is a perfect fit for this beautiful area. But do not just believe the stories you hear and the photos you see – it is certainly a site that should be on a Must-Do list when visiting Northern Vietnam.

Welcome to Halong Bay

Little island covered by trees are everywhere

Little island covered by trees are everywhere

The most popular way to explore Halong Bay is taking one of the hundreds of junks cruising through the bay. Due to the lengthy bus journey to and from Hanoi (4 hours one way) one day trips to Halong bay are not the best idea. You will spend 8 hours on the bus, and maybe 4 – 6 hours on the boat. This means getting to the outer parts of the bay, and you won’t see the most famous part of the bay. I would highly recommend to do a minimum of an overnight trip.

Another option could be heading to Cat Ba island and heading out from the island to see Halong Bay. I have not done that option (yet!) – so I cannot advise if this is the best option or how to organise it.

Please be aware that due to storms and heavy rain cruises can be cancelled on short notice, especially during the rainy season of Northern Vietnam in July / August. So before booking a tour make sure to check the weather forecast.

Arrival / Departure

Most cruises start from Halong City, around 160km east of Hanoi. When booking a cruise the transfer between Hanoi and Halong City by minibus is usually included. So there is no need to book a private transfer.

The bus journey takes usually around 4 hours along the highway. One advise – do not sit in the first or last row of the minibus. The front view towards the road is not for the faint hearted. On the way there is a stop at one of the tourists malls, full of tacky souvenirs, clean toilets and a place for drink and food.

Terminal of Halong Town Port

The buses will all arrive at the harbour of Halong City, where the junks wait to depart for the trip. From here the trip back to Hanoi start as well. If you plan to take the plane the same day as the cruise finish, check with the agency, as the minibus could let you off at a junction of the highway, where a pre-arranged taxi could wait. This saves time getting in and out of Hanoi. A private transfer to the airport could be another option.

For other onward journeys, for example to Ninh Binh, it is worthwhile to check for buses departing Halong City to Ninh Binh – saves a detour via Hanoi as well.

For Cat Ba island head to Hai Phong by bus or train from Hanoi. You could also fly directly from HCMC, Phu Quoc, Nha Trang, Dalat and Danang to Hai Phong.

Accommodation

Thanks to the popularity of Halong Bay there are choices between hundred of different junks (cruise ships), covering the whole range of budgets. You can get cheap trips on a low class boat, up to a luxurious 5* boat. However, unlike anywhere else in Vietnam the saying you get what you pay for applies for Halong Bay. The cheapest boats are often not maintained well enough, and there is no focus on security. And unfortunately fire on board or even junks sinking is not that unusual there. After another fire in 2016 there are now rumours that overnight trips will be banned for security reason – though it could have something to do with all the hotels that are currently built in Halong City. So now there is still time to explore the bay via overnight stays.

Most cruises will stay overnight near Cong Do area – so do not be surprised to see so many boats there during the night. However, while you might hear the noise from some boats, you will still be able to enjoy the view from there.

In addition of the comfort of the boat it is also important to check the itineraries – especially for 3 day cruises as they can vary a lot. Some will offer activities like kayaking, rock climbing, other cruises have more relaxed itineraries on the beach or visiting caves. So it is worthwhile to have a look a round.

I travelled with Viola Cruise, which is a nice 4* junk, with a very interesting 3 day itinerary on offer.

Food & Drinks

Food is included on most cruises. The first dish is lunch when arriving on the boat, and the last dish is lunch before heading back to Hanoi. The other dishes are breakfast and dinner. The quality of the food depends on the quality of the cruise. So do not expect top class food on a 1* cruise. But if you are on one of the better boats you could be in for a treat. The food during my cruise was just great – especially dinner. A variety of fish, sea food, salad, spring rolls and meat were served – and nicely presented.

Sea food will be certainly served on junks

Drinks are not included, and they will be more expensive than when in town. It might be more expensive on some boats – so if you are worried, ask. Some boats might offer free water and free juice. Otherwise you can get beer, soft drink, wine and cocktails. You usually pay the drinks at the end of the cruise. However, if you are on a day boat, you have to pay the crew at the end of the day.

From time to time you will see little boats approaching the junks – you can buy drinks from them as well.

Halong Bay has some sites on offer, and several activities. It all depends on the itinerary. Some places are visited by nearly every single cruises, others are not, So check the itinerary before booking.

One of the most popular activities at Halong Bay is probably sitting back and enjoy the beauty of this place, passing hundreds of little limestone islands. Usually the journey from the harbour to the main site is a great chance to get a seat on the top deck with a drink, and let the view sink in. The same applies at the end of the night when the sun sets  over the island. This is one peaceful place to relax and enjoying something special. A great way to experience Halong Bay.

In addition of the beautiful islands Halong Bays also offers some very interesting sites.

The most famous and probably the most visited site is the Sung Sot cave – aka the Surprise Cave. The large cave with the high ceiling and the view you get from the top of the island is reason enough to visit the cave.  Here are more details about the cave.

A much less visited cave is the Ho Dong Tien Cave (Fairy Lake cave). The cave itself is not as well set up as the Surprise cave and if you are afraid of tight spaces it might be not the best place to visit –  otherwise it is an interesting place. For more details click here.

Another place more popular for 3 day trips is the Day & Night grotto. It is a series of little bays connected by tunnels going underneath the hills – and you explore it by kayaks. Here are more information about the grotto.

Most trips will also include a stop at one of the islands to relax on the beach, swimming or exploring the island. Soi Sim Beach is one of these places, having a nice beach and a nice viewing point. For more details click here.

Another popular place to visit is the Cua Van Floating Village. In this village a minority group of Vietnam live here in houses floating in a protected area of the bay. Here are more details of the fishing village.

Oysters at the pearl farm

Oysters at the pearl farm

One of the more touristy stops is a pearl farm, providing the chance to see how pearls are farmed and how they are extracted. There is also the chance to buy original pearls. So if you are interested bring your wallet with you. Here are more information.

Other activities cruises can offer are kayaking trips, rock climbing, visiting other caves or more time to relax on the beach. if any of this interest you, check out itineraries to find the right cruise for you.

In addition you might be offered joining a little cooking class to prepare spring rolls, or doing Thai exercise early morning. So you can be as active or as lazy as you want during a Halong bay Trip.

So overall a trip to Halong Bay with a cruise is a great way to explore this natural wonder of the world. And with so many things to see and do, I would highly recommend to consider a 3 day cruise if your time permits it, as it enables you to see more of the bay and not just the sites that most cruises will cover in one day.

If you are not a fan of cruises, then Cat Ba island might be the better option. Either way – a visit to the area should be on any itinerary for a visit to Northern Vietnam.

Table of Contents

When to visit Halong Bay

  • Cruises are available all year round, allowing tourists to visit Halong Bay at any time of the year. However, the best season to travel is from October to March, when it comes to pleasant temperatures and little rainfall. During that time, you would have to face more crowds, so it is wiser to plan and book tours in advance.
  • The months between April and September are characterized by hot, humid weather and the highest annual rainfall with August being the rainiest month.

What is the best length of cruise?

  • Determining when to start the trip and how long to stay is the first step when planning your itinerary. You have three options to select from, depending on your time and budget: day trip, two days and one night, or three days and two nights.

Overnight Halong Cruise (2 days and 1 night or 3 days and 2 nights)

  • If you prefer to spend more time on the bay, overnight Halong Cruise may be an ideal option. The longer you stay, the more experiences you can have. Actually, the overnight cruise will provide additional opportunities for visits to tourist attractions and more activities to do.
  • Moreover, attentive arrangements for meals and accomodation are also included in your overnight cruise. You will therefore have to pay more for itineraries lasting 2 days and 1 night or 3 days and 2 nights, but you will undoubtedly receive worthwhile experiences.
  • Out of the two possible itineraries, the 2-day, 1-night Halong Bay Cruise appears to be the better choice. The majority of the cruises along a given route will share quite similar itineraries. They consist of all activities offered by every Halong Bay cruise. In other words, whether you select 1-night or 2-nights itineraries, you can engage in the activities almost the same, except for more tourist sites to visit.

  • As there appears to be plenty of cruise options available, it is quite a hard task for travelers to pick up the best Halong Cruises for your trip. If you are about to take a cruise to Halong, do not miss out our detailed guide below. Let’s see what we should do to have the Best Luxury Halong Bay Cruise

halong-bay-cruise-map

Check the route

  • The second thing to be considered is where you want to visit. If you continue to believe that every Halong Bay trip is the same, it must be your mistake. In fact, there are three typical tourist areas, namely Halong Bay, Bai Tu Long Bay, and Lan Ha Bay.
  • In general, the three tourist areas mentioned above have geographical characteristics in common, which are limestone pillars, caverns and turquoise water. Though, your experiences will vary depending on the tourist destination.

Route 1: Cruise to Halong Bay

This is the busiest and most well-known route, departing from Bai Chay port for day cruises or Tuan Chau harbor for overnight cruises, respectively, and traveling through the most well-known tourist attractions in Halong Bay.

Tourists will be able to see well-known islets, caves and beaches that frequently appear in the media. Halong Bay has the most cruise operating and providing a wide variety of overnight itineraries. Here are some suggestions for the best 2-day cruise:

Ambassador Cruise

  • Pelican Cruise
  • Indochina Sails

Route 2: Cruise to Lan Ha Bay and Cat Ba Island

Lan Ha Bay, which is a part of Hai Phong, resembles Halong in many ways. Though its area is not too large, Lan Ha Bay owns beautiful and crystal-clear beaches.

Additionally, the stunning Cat Ba Island in Lan Ha Bay is home to forests with distinctive ecological systems, regarded as another reason why tourists flock to the bay. Cruises on Lan Ha Bay typically depart from Binh wharf or Cat Ba’s Beo wharf for the attractive tourist sites of the bay.

Let’s refer to our recommendations for the best Lan Ha Bay cruises below:

Orchid Cruise

  • Mon Cheri Cruises
  • Peony Cruise
  • Heritage Cruise

Route 3: Visit Bai Tu Long Bay – A hideaway from the bustling life

Compared to Halong Bay and Lan Ha Bay, Bai Tu Long is the least popular tourist destination. Therefore, a Bai Tu Long cruise will be the best for those who are seeking some tranquil days.

The lesser-known tourist destination, Bai Tu Long Bay, is the perfect location for kayaking and swimming in the crystal-clear water of super clean pristine beaches. The following are some suggestions for a cruise around Bai Tu Long Bay:

  • Emperor Cruise
  • Signature Cruise
  • Paloma Cruise

How to decide your budget?

Among hundreds of cruises, tourists are absolutely able to choose the one that suits your budget. After comparing various cruise pricing, you can choose the best cruise standard with ease. A good cruise pricing should be reasonable in terms of quality and not too inexpensive.

Therefore, in order to ensure the quality of the overnight itineraries, tourists typically favor 3-star cruises. As shown below, we can provide you with almost exact price for different overnight itineraries (per guest, per night):

  • 3-star cruise: USD 120 – USD 141
  • 4-star cruise: USD 142 – USD 160

Along with affordable cruises, Halong Bay offers a variety of 5-star luxury cruises with prices starting at $350 USD a night, including the Emperor, Paradise Peak, Orchid Premium, Ginger Cruise, Violet Cruise, and others.

How to pick a BEST Halong Cruise by Category

Choosing the best Halong Cruise will be simpler if you get to know how to choose the suitable one for your special needs. The factors that should be taken into consideration when choosing a cruise may include your accompanions (your family, friends or lover), types of traveling (for young backpackers, middle-aged travelers or retirees) and so on. Here are some common special needs you may have and possible solutions to help you pick the best Halong Cruise:

In general, there are only 2 to 3 different types of cabins available on cruises, including double cabins, twin cabins, and family cabins, which are all designed in cruise standards ranging from 3-star to 5-star. The availability of triple cabins, family cabins, and connected cabins varies by cruise.

Therefore, before making your cruise reservation, you must carefully consider whether you require a double cabin or a family cabin. Some cruises providing family cabins and connecting cabins with reasonable prices are listed as Swan Cruise, Paloma Cruise and Peony Cruise.

Honeymoon Cruise

Some overnight Halong Bay cruises offer a private ambiance created by cabin décor, dining sets, and special deals for newlyweds and couples. What could be more romantic than sharing a sweet moment when watching the sunset or enjoying a wonderful dinner on the deck with candles, flowers, and wine?

There are currently numerous cruises that have affordable honeymoon packages available. Some recommended Halong Bay honeymoon cruises can be named as Emperor Cruise, Valentine Premium Cruise, Violet Cruise – Heritage Line, L’amour Junk and so on.

Kid-friendly cruise

Not many cruises have kid clubs to babysit your kids. Though, if you truly need to take some time to yourself, you can ask the cruise staff for assistance. In case they are not too busy, they will definitely assist you in caring for your kids for a short while.

Food and Beverage

How to choose the best Halong Bay cruise if you have a certain preference for food and beverage? On overnight cruises, lunch and dinner are frequently served from a buffet, fixed menu, or à la carte. You can make additional special requests, such as those for kid-friendly meals, meals for people with allergies, vegan food, and Indian food. In this case, it is preferable to get in touch with the cruise line before making a reservation to ensure that your request will be met.

swimming-pool-on-cruise

Pick your preferred activities on board

Considering what activities a Halong Bay cruise can offer to tourists is considered as the most effective way to pick the best one. In general, tourists will have access to a greater choice of activities on overnight cruises than on day trips.

Paddling out in a kayak is one of must-try activities in Halong Bay. This activity is included in almost all 2-day and 3-day itineraries. Tourists will be able to kayak amid limestone karsts that emerge on turquoise water or through dark and bright caves to get closer to the charming beauty of Halong Bay.

  • Joining yoga classes: Some cruises offer yoga classes as a fitness activity on board. It will be perfect to do a meditative retreat while soaking in the refreshing atmosphere.
  • Taking part in cooking classes: For individuals who love traditional Vietnamese cuisine, engaging in this activity is a great opportunity to learn the fundamentals of Vietnamese cooking, specifically through lessons on how to make spring rolls.
  • Practicing Tai Chi: Tai Chi exercises are frequently offered as morning exercises on the rooftop deck of overnight cruises. Tai chi is a form of gentle exercise that promotes relaxation as well as a healing retreat.
  • Night squid fishing: This is an interesting nighttime activity on the cruise. Tourists will be guided on how to use a fishing rod to catch a fresh squid.
  • Sunbathing: After a full day of activities, sunbathing on the deck’s lounge chairs or occasionally while reading a good book may be a wonderful way to unwind.
  • Taking part in a pool party: If you’re on a cruise with a group of friends, you might want to think about picking one with an outdoor pool to enjoy a fun pool party. Some cruises with jacuzzi that you should try include Stella of the Sea, Jasmine Cruise, Orchid Cruise, Mon Cheri Cruise and so on.
  • Getting spas and massages: This activity is a helpful way to feel re-energized and relaxed. If you love spa treatments, let’s reserve a Halong Bay cruise with spa, which is offered in almost all cruises.
