2000 Ford Excursion Towing Capacity

Find out how much the 2000 Ford Excursion can pull, across 4 different trims.

In this article, we'll give you important data and details about the 2000 Ford Excursion, including the towing capacity, engine size, gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR), curb weight, payload capacity, horsepower, torque, axle ratio, drive type, transmission type, and more.

Select a trim from the list below to view the towing capacity data. All trims for the 2000 Ford Excursion have the same towing capacity of 10,000 lbs.

If you need any help explaining the terms used in the tables below, you can find a glossary of terms at the bottom of this article .

2000 Ford Excursion Towing Capacity Terms

In the tables above, you'll see a lot of terms that you may not be familiar with. Here's a quick rundown of what they each mean and why each of them is important when it comes to towing capacity.

Maximum Towing Capacity

This is the maximum weight that the 2000 Ford Excursion can tow.

If you are driving at altitudes above 3,280ft (or 1,000m) of sea level, the weight you can tow needs to be reduced by about 10% for every additional 3,280ft (or 1,000m) of altitude. This is because the air is thinner at higher altitudes, which means that the engine has to work harder to pull the same weight.

Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR)

The GVWR the maximum weight of the 2000 Ford Excursion when fully loaded. This includes the weight of the vehicle, passengers, cargo, and any accessories or equipment that you have added to the vehicle.

You can find this number in the vehicle owner's manual, or on a sticker on the driver's side door jamb.

Curb Weight

The curb weight of the Ford Excursion is the weight of the vehicle with a full tank of gas, but with no passengers or cargo and the standard options that come with the vehicle.

Payload Capacity

The term "payload" is the weight of all the things that you put in the vehicle, including passengers, cargo, and any accessories or equipment that you have added. It can be increased by upgrading certain options, for example:

  • Better suspension springs
  • Coil-over shock absorbers
  • A longer truck bed
  • Attached a trailer to the vehicle
  • Adding bed rails

Horsepower is a measure of the power of the engine. It is the amount of work that the engine can do in a given amount of time.

In simple terms, the more horsepower a vehicle has, the more weight it can pull.

Measured in lb-ft, torque is the amount of force that the engine can apply to the wheels. This is an important metric for towing because better torque means you can pull weight at lower RPMs, which is better for the engine.

The axle ratio is the ratio of the number of turns of the drive shaft for every one turn of the wheels. The higher the axle ratio, the more torque is applied to the wheels.

The drive type is the type of transmission that the 2000 Ford Excursion has. There are three main types:

  • Front-wheel drive (FWD)
  • Rear-wheel drive (RWD)
  • All-wheel drive (AWD)

All-wheel drive is the best type of drive type for towing because it distributes the weight of the vehicle evenly across all four wheels. Rear-wheel drive is also acceptable, but front-wheel drive is not recommended because they aren't able to pull as much weight.

Transmission Type

Transmission usually means manual or automatic. Some vehicles have a towing mode that will protect the transmission from damage when towing heavy loads - which can cause overheating and failure.

Turbocharger

A turbocharger is a device that forces more air into the engine, which increases the amount of fuel that can be burned. This increases the amount of power that the engine can produce.

If your vehicle has a turbocharger, it will be able to tow more weight than a vehicle without one.

The wheelbase is the distance between the front and rear wheels. The longer the wheelbase, the more weight the vehicle can tow.

Front Gross Axle Weight Rating (GAWR)

The front GAWR is the maximum weight that the front axle can support. This is usually a number that is stamped on the axle itself.

Rear Gross Axle Weight Rating (GAWR)

The rear GAWR is the maximum weight that the rear axle can support. This is usually a number that is stamped on the axle itself.

Tow Test: 2000 Ford Excursion

  • By Don Sherman
  • Updated: January 1, 2000

Is bigger better? If it is, Ford’s 2000 Excursion SUV has made a giant leap forward in stature, prestige, and towing capability. Its tow rating starts at 6,200 pounds in its base form but hits a whopping 10,000 pounds with a full option package. We wanted to put this behemoth through all its paces, so we ordered the largest engine available with a 4×4 driveline and all the trimmings. The standard engine is a 260-hp, 5.4-liter V-8. Options are a 300-hp, 6.8-liter V-10 and a 7.3-liter turbocharged and intercooled diesel V-8 (our test model). Supplied by Navistar, this oil burner peaks at a mere 235 hp, but it cranks out an all-mighty 500 ft-lb of torque at only 1600 rpm. When this engine says go, big ships get a move on.

The Excursion rides on Ford’s F-250 heavy-duty pickup truck underpinnings. That means meaty axles, a substantial frame, and brakes theoretically capable of stopping a speeding locomotive. Inside, there’s ample room for eight passengers and all their gear. Climb two steps to enter the cab, where you ride tall in the saddle; in fact, your sight line will skim the top of a Ford Explorer’s roof. Most traffic looks up at you…in awe.

For ballast, we hooked up a Four Winns 248 Vista cruiser riding on a tandem axle trailer. King Marine of Walled Lake, Michigan, provided the boat and trailer rig, which tipped the scales at 7,180 pounds.

Diesel engines are not for the hollow of pocket. There’s a $4,005 stipend to purchase the torque monster. Diesels offer a significant efficiency advantage over gas engines: 30 percent more mileage than the base gas engine according to Ford. We measured a towing fuel consumption of 11 mpg, quite remarkable for a gross weight of 7.6 tons, but the payback requires roughly 90,000 miles of use.

One thing that can’t be debated is this SUV’s appetite for hard work. At the launch ramp, a mere 1500 rpm was enough to roll us out of the water and onto dry land. Dropped into low range, the big diesel was barely above idle at 1000 rpm when we began inching up the grade. On the road the compression-ignition rattle is nicely subdued. As diesel’s go, this one is powerful, responsive, and well behaved.

Tooling around in an SUV with a 137.1″ wheelbase requires a bit of accommodation. A turn circle exceeds 50 feet, so parking requires planning. Both height and width are in the 80” range, so this machine overflows an ordinary garage slot. The ride is smooth and quiet – for a truck. Don’t expect to glide over rough pavement with the poise of a luxury sedan.

Access to the cargo hold is through one hinge-up and two hinge-out doors. The split middle seat folds and slides for entry to the rear. Head- and legroom are fine for full-size first mates.

LAST WORD. Just try to find something the Ford Excursion can’t haul.

Ford Excursion Tow Packages | What’s Included?(All Model Years)

The Ford Excursions, produced between 2000 and 2005, were all equipped with a more "standardized" towing package, reflecting more of the vehicle's robust utility based design. There wasn't much to it but, then again, that was all that was needed for these vehicles, due to the heavy-duty frames and the large engines that they used.

Included In The Tow Package For All Excursions:

This package was consistent across all model years (2000-2005) and was a standard option, regardless of any trim levels, engine options, 2WD or 4WD models or  weight ratings . It included only three basic components, which were:

  • A 7-pin trailer wiring harness and connector: This feature enabled a seamless connection between the vehicle's wiring and the trailers, ensuring that all lighting and electronic signals, such as brake lights, running lights and turn signals, were properly synchronized.
  • A Class IV frame-mounted hitch receiver: This heavy-duty hitch receiver was securely attached to the vehicle's frame, providing a reliable and sturdy connection point for a wide range of trailers. Class IV hitches are designed for heavy-duty towing and are typically found on full-size pickups, SUVs, and other larger vehicles that tend to have higher towing capacities. They can manage a substantial amount of weight, with a tongue weight capacity ranging between 600 and 1,000 pounds, and a gross trailer weight capacity of up to 10,000 pounds. This makes them ideal for towing large trailers, boats, and other sizable loads, as long as the vehicle can handle those amounts of weight.
  • A trailer brake wiring/feed kit: This was wiring that was preinstalled within the interior of the vehicle that was ready for a brake controller to be installed. This wiring kit made integrating a trailer brake system for the Excursions much easier and saved a ton of time. The absence of a brake controller meant that owners could choose a controller or system that suited their specific towing needs.

Ford Excursion Towing Package (2000-2005)

A Note On The Uniformity Of Tow Packages...

Like I mentioned earlier, the Ford Excursion maintained a consistent towing package across all its model years, trim levels, and submodels, making the tow package the exact same for all Excursions. This uniformity in the towing package meant that regardless of the specific version or model year of the Excursion, owners could expect the same towing capabilities and features.

With a class IV (4) hitch being used, you will want to be sure that you have the correct supplementary equipment for towing, especially if you are planning on pulling those heavier loads that are close or at the limits of the vehicle.

Special Equipment & Class IV Hitch Receivers: A class IV hitch can handle up to 10,000 pounds, which is fine for early model years of these SUVs but will exceed the limit of the hitch for later models. As an example, if we look at the towing capacity for the 2000 and 2001 Excursions, we can see that the maximum trailer weight rating is set at 10,000 pounds, which the hitch can handle.

For model years 2002, 2003, 2004 and 2005, the maximum trailer weight was raised to 11,000 pounds (for some models), which exceeds the Class IV hitch's rating by 1,000 pounds. In order to achieve this rating, you must use a weight distributing hitch with your hitch receiver, to balance the trailer load better.

Edmunds' Expert Review

  • Epic interior space, powerful engine line-up and a long list of standard equipment.
  • Its HUGE, which means poor gas mileage and difficult to maneuver within city limits.

The Excursion is an entirely new SUV based on Ford's F-250 Super Duty truck platform. It is the largest vehicle of its type, outgunning even the Chevy Suburban in terms of overall size and interior space.

Edmunds says

Too much truck for too many people. Buy a Suburban if you need a nine-passenger SUV that can tow heavy stuff.

Cost to Drive Cost to drive estimates for the 2000 Ford Excursion Limited 4dr SUV 4WD and comparison vehicles are based on 15,000 miles per year (with a mix of 55% city and 45% highway driving) and energy estimates of N/A undefined in North Dakota.

Vehicle overview.

In a classic "bigger is better" move, Ford has decided to up the SUV ante by producing the largest soccer-mom mobile yet. The Excursion offers more interior room and cargo capacity than the previous heavy-weight title holder, the Chevrolet Suburban. At the same time, Ford is touting the Excursion's "earth-friendly" aspects like an engine line-up that meets LEV standards and the fact that 85 percent of the Excursion, by weight, is recyclable (never mind that the remaining 15 percent of an Excursion still equals about 2.5 Honda Civics). The Excursion's base engine is a 5.4-liter V8 on two-wheel-drive models or a 6.8-liter V10 on models equipped with four-wheel drive. Optional with either drivetrain is a 7.3-liter V8 diesel that makes 235 horsepower and 500 foot-pounds of earth-shaking torque. All engines come with a four-speed automatic transmission as standard equipment; no manual transmission is offered in the Excursion. Two trim levels are available. The base XLT model includes a three-piece rear door, running boards, remote keyless entry, driver and front-passenger airbags, four-wheel disc brakes with ABS, an AM/FM/cassette/CD stereo, six cupholders, power door locks, power windows, an overhead console, cloth seats, a 40/20/40 split-bench front seat and a third-row removable bench seat. Angle up to the Limited trim level and you get leather seating surfaces, front captain's chairs, woodgrain trim, rear-seat audio controls, a trip computer, power rear-quarter windows, 10 cupholders, aluminum wheels and illuminated running boards. Additional options like heated seats, heated exterior mirrors, a six-disc CD changer and a limited-slip axle can be ordered as well. Since it's based off the F-250 Super Duty (the front doors, fenders, and hood will swap between them), Ford was able to develop the Excursion with a bare-minimum investment of company funds. This means a large profit margin for each Excursion sold, even by SUV standards. These same market forces were behind the Cadillac Escalade, Lincoln Navigator and Lexus LX470. We've begun to wonder how far this SUV thing can go, but if people keep buying them, automakers will keep building them.

Gagarin cup (khl) finals:  atlant moscow oblast vs. salavat yulaev ufa.

Much like the Elitserien Finals, we have a bit of an offense vs. defense match-up in this league Final.  While Ufa let their star top line of Alexander Radulov, Patrick Thoresen and Igor Grigorenko loose on the KHL's Western Conference, Mytischi played a more conservative style, relying on veterans such as former NHLers Jan Bulis, Oleg Petrov, and Jaroslav Obsut.  Just reaching the Finals is a testament to Atlant's disciplined style of play, as they had to knock off much more high profile teams from Yaroslavl and St. Petersburg to do so.  But while they did finish 8th in the league in points, they haven't seen the likes of Ufa, who finished 2nd.

This series will be a challenge for the underdog, because unlike some of the other KHL teams, Ufa's top players are generally younger and in their prime.  Only Proshkin amongst regular blueliners is over 30, with the work being shared by Kirill Koltsov (28), Andrei Kuteikin (26), Miroslav Blatak (28), Maxim Kondratiev (28) and Dmitri Kalinin (30).  Oleg Tverdovsky hasn't played a lot in the playoffs to date.  Up front, while led by a fairly young top line (24-27), Ufa does have a lot of veterans in support roles:  Vyacheslav Kozlov , Viktor Kozlov , Vladimir Antipov, Sergei Zinovyev and Petr Schastlivy are all over 30.  In fact, the names of all their forwards are familiar to international and NHL fans:  Robert Nilsson , Alexander Svitov, Oleg Saprykin and Jakub Klepis round out the group, all former NHL players.

For Atlant, their veteran roster, with only one of their top six D under the age of 30 (and no top forwards under 30, either), this might be their one shot at a championship.  The team has never won either a Russian Superleague title or the Gagarin Cup, and for players like former NHLer Oleg Petrov, this is probably the last shot at the KHL's top prize.  The team got three extra days rest by winning their Conference Final in six games, and they probably needed to use it.  Atlant does have younger regulars on their roster, but they generally only play a few shifts per game, if that.

The low event style of game for Atlant probably suits them well, but I don't know how they can manage to keep up against Ufa's speed, skill, and depth.  There is no advantage to be seen in goal, with Erik Ersberg and Konstantin Barulin posting almost identical numbers, and even in terms of recent playoff experience Ufa has them beat.  Luckily for Atlant, Ufa isn't that far away from the Moscow region, so travel shouldn't play a major role.

I'm predicting that Ufa, winners of the last Superleague title back in 2008, will become the second team to win the Gagarin Cup, and will prevail in five games.  They have a seriously well built team that would honestly compete in the NHL.  They represent the potential of the league, while Atlant represents closer to the reality, as a team full of players who played themselves out of the NHL.

  • Atlant @ Ufa, Friday Apr 8 (3:00 PM CET/10:00 PM EST)
  • Atlant @ Ufa, Sunday Apr 10 (1:00 PM CET/8:00 AM EST)
  • Ufa @ Atlant, Tuesday Apr 12 (5:30 PM CET/12:30 PM EST)
  • Ufa @ Atlant, Thursday Apr 14 (5:30 PM CET/12:30 PM EST)

Games 5-7 are as yet unscheduled, but every second day is the KHL standard, so expect Game 5 to be on Saturday, like an early start.

Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery and Museum

Zvenigorod's most famous sight is the Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery, which was founded in 1398 by the monk Savva from the Troitse-Sergieva Lavra, at the invitation and with the support of Prince Yury Dmitrievich of Zvenigorod. Savva was later canonised as St Sabbas (Savva) of Storozhev. The monastery late flourished under the reign of Tsar Alexis, who chose the monastery as his family church and often went on pilgrimage there and made lots of donations to it. Most of the monastery’s buildings date from this time. The monastery is heavily fortified with thick walls and six towers, the most impressive of which is the Krasny Tower which also serves as the eastern entrance. The monastery was closed in 1918 and only reopened in 1995. In 1998 Patriarch Alexius II took part in a service to return the relics of St Sabbas to the monastery. Today the monastery has the status of a stauropegic monastery, which is second in status to a lavra. In addition to being a working monastery, it also holds the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum.

Belfry and Neighbouring Churches

2000 ford excursion max towing

Located near the main entrance is the monastery's belfry which is perhaps the calling card of the monastery due to its uniqueness. It was built in the 1650s and the St Sergius of Radonezh’s Church was opened on the middle tier in the mid-17th century, although it was originally dedicated to the Trinity. The belfry's 35-tonne Great Bladgovestny Bell fell in 1941 and was only restored and returned in 2003.
