Baguio has always been one of the top destinations in the Philippines. Because of its chilly temperature, pine-dominated landscapes, and overall romantic atmosphere, this mountain city has attracted tourists especially in summer and the holidays like Christmas and New Year.

Although a highly urbanized city, Baguio retains its rustic charm in spots. From natural sites to modern ones, Baguio has something for each type of traveler and each age group. Moreover, the food culture and shopping districts have become attractions themselves.

Whether you’re a regular or a first-timer, here are some of the best things to do and places to visit in and near Baguio City. In this list, we are also including attractions in the neighboring municipalities like La Trinidad and Tuba .

Note: Baguio is geographically within Benguet but is not under the jurisdiction of the province. It has its own charter and administration.

WHAT'S COVERED IN THIS GUIDE?

TOP BAGUIO TOURIST SPOTS & ACTIVITIES

Baguio is bursting with interesting places to visit and things to do. But here are some of our top recommendations!

Mirador Hill and Eco Park

JAPAN IN BAGUIO! Easily a highlight of our most recent trip, the Mirador Heritage and Eco-Spirituality Park is a rising tourist destination, boasting a combination of local and Japan-inspired attractions.

This 5-hectare property is scribbled with hiking trails leading to different sites including the Rock Gardens, the Pandemic Healing Memorial, the La Storta Garden, Ifugao Houses, and the Circular Seismic Chamber (closed when we visited). But perhaps the most popular is the iconic Mirador Peace Memorial, a red-painted torii gate atop the hill, overlooking the city and the surrounding hills. It is a favorite photo spot for many visitors.

Mirador Peace Memorial

Another crowd-drawer is the Arashiyama Bamboo Grove, perhaps named after the bamboo forest of Kyoto’s temple district. While the bamboo trunks are not as big or tall as those in the Japan site, it still makes for a refreshing resting and photo spot.

Mirador Hill Bamboo Groves

Aside from the park, Mirador Hill also harbors the Grotto of Our Lady of Lourdes, Kapilya ni Hesus at Maria, Café Iñigo, and the Mirador Jesuit Villa Retreat House.

Address: Mirador Hill, Barangay Dominican Hill-Mirador, Baguio City Opening Hours: 6:00 AM – 6:00 PM (Daily). The opening hours might change, so please check the official website or Facebook page before visiting. Entrance Fee: P100 (Regular); FREE (Below 12 y/o)

Oh, by the way, if you’re interested in only the newest attractions, we have a video about that here:

Igorot Stone Kingdom

Launched to the public in the second half of 2021, the Igorot Stone Kingdom is Baguio’s newest attraction. So new that construction of some parts were still ongoing when we visited. The park showcases both modern and traditional Igorot culture as well as the values of the Cordillera Region.

Igorot Stone Kingdom

The whole area covers about 6,000 square meters and is dominated by two massive structures facing each other — a modern-day castle and an old-school stone wall. Made of hollow blocks and cement, the modern-day castle is etched with walkways, punctuated by statues, photo spots and viewing decks. It also crowned by a food court, serving mostly Pinoy snacks.

The stone wall, on the other hand, resembles the rice terraces that feature the rock-laying skills of the Igorot people. As you climb, you get to see the Fertility Stone Tower, the Temple of Kabunyan, Bangan’s Dome, the Tower of Gatan, the Face in the Rock, and many more.

Inside Igorot Stone Kingdom

Other attractions are the Igorot Gold Mine, the Wishing Well, and the Igorot Golden Bridge. Soon, the park will also have life-size statues of prominent Igorots.

Address: #86 Long-long Benguet Road, Pinsao Proper, Baguio City Opening Hours: 6:00 AM – 6:00 PM (Daily). The opening hours might change, so please check the official website or Facebook page before visiting. Entrance Fee: P100 (Regular); P80 (Senior & PWD with ID); P80 (Kids 4-12 y/o); FREE (3 y/o and below)

Tam-awan Village

Just a stone’s throw from Igorot Stone Kingdom lies Tam-Awan Village , nicknamed Garden in the Sky . It was commissioned by the Chanum Foundation in 1998 in order to create a model village showcasing reconstructed traditional Cordillera houses and make them accessible to more people.

Tam-awan Village

The village highlights the indigenous craftsmanship and aesthetics of the region and its local artists. From three huts transported from Ifugao, the village now has nine traditional houses — seven Ifugao huts and two Kalinga houses. These structures were reconstructed using mostly the original materials.

If you want to immerse yourself more, you can also book your lodging here.

Diplomat Hotel

Diplomat Hotel

Officially named the Dominican Hill Retreat House but popularly referred to as the Diplomat Hotel , the 17-hectare property is sprawled atop the Dominican Hill. It was originally built as a retreat house for the Dominican priests and nuns in the first half of the 20th century until World War II, when the Japanese took over and turned it into a military garrison and war prison.

After restorations and remodeling, the Diplomat Hotel was launched and operated between the 1970s and the 1980s. Given its history, especially the atrocities of WWII, it gained notoriety for paranormal activities, consistently putting it on the list of most haunted places in the Philippines.

Diplomat Hotel Baguio

Cemetery of Negativism

Located on a hill’s slope between Bell House and Camp John Hay Picnic Area, the Cemetery of Negativism (also called the Lost Cemetery) was commissioned in the early 1980s by the base’s commanding general John Hightower.

baguio trip caption

But this cemetery is not the usual site for burying human bodies but rather a symbolic place for burying negativities. The tombstones were inscribed with witty and punny “eulogies” which may sometimes require a dash of sarcasm to understand.

One tombstone reads “Itz Not Possible”, conceived November 11, 1905 but “still not born”. Another one has “Know Dam Way” engraved on it, then below it, “Conceived New Years Eve 1910. Didn’t work out.”

If you are looking for something unique, funny, and inspiring at the same time, head over here and scare the bad vibes away.

Address: Historical Core, Camp John Hay, Baguio City Opening Hours: 9:00 AM – 6:00 PM (Daily). The opening hours might change, so please check the official website or Facebook page before visiting. Entrance Fee: P75. This fee also allows entrance to the Bell House.

Baguio Cathedral

baguio trip caption

Baguio Cathedral , officially named Our Lady of the Atonement Cathedral , is a hilltop cathedral overlooking Session Road and the busy downtown streets. It was launched in 1936 and dedicated to the Virgin Mary.

It follows a neo-Romanesque architectural style that features twin belfries/spires, a rose window (facade), and stained glass windows. It is one of the prominent landmarks in Baguio and is located beside Saint Louis University.

To access it from Session Road, visitors have to climb several steps, leading to the courtyard and the cathedral. Alternatively, you can go to Porta Vaga Shopping Mall and use the escalator leading to the cathedral’s courtyard.

Address: Our Lady Of Atonement Cathedral, Session Road, Baguio City Opening Hours: Tourists are welcome anytime but please be considerate when mass is ongoing. You can check the mass schedule on the official Facebook page. Entrance Fee: FREE

Ukay-Ukay Stores

Baguio won’t be Baguio without “SM” — Segunda Mano stores. These second-hand stores, locally called wagwagan but popularly called by tourists ukay-ukay , littered the busy streets and corners of downtown Baguio. Tourists will find themselves easily getting lost in the mountains of options for pre-loved items. The pieces vary — clothing, bags, shoes, belts, scarves, and others.

Honestly, the wide range of choices can get really overwhelming. But if you have the patience and the stamina (haha), you might dig up some vintage and rare items. The popular ukay-ukay areas are Skyworld (Session Road), Hilltop (at the back of Baguio City Market), and Bayanihan (near Burnham Park). You’ll also find some, well, good finds, at the night market!

Happy bargain hunting!

Session Road Nightlife

Session Road

One of the city’s major arteries, Session Road is the most famous street in Baguio. It is abuzz with locals and tourists going about their business during the day, but it becomes livelier at night as bars and hangout places pulsate with good music and great conversations.

If you want to have dinner first before losing yourself in music and booze with friends and maybe new acquaintances, Session Road hosts numerous international restaurants and fast-food restaurants.

But if you want to try the local offerings, it is also home to several homegrown restaurants including Sizzling Plate, Ocha Asian Restaurant, Vizco’s Restaurant, Volante, Oh My Gulay, and Drop Out, among others.

Baguio Public Market

Baguio Public Market

For pasalubong, make your way to the Baguio Public Market, which houses countless stalls selling products that are synonymous with the region — fresh strawberries and Sagada oranges, strawberry and ube jams, peanut brittle, fresh vegetables, and souvenirs!

And of course, grab a walis tambo!

baguio trip caption

There’s something about Baguio’s walis tambo that makes it consistently land in the top items of pasalubong from the city. For some reason, my mom and aunts never fail to buy one when we’re in Baguio or request it from loved ones visiting Baguio. I asked my mom about it and she casually told me that the walis tambo from Baguio is sturdier and thicker.

LEONARD WOOD & MINES VIEW Tourist Spots

In this section are attractions situated northwest of the city center, usually reached by taking the Leonard Wood Road.

Baguio Botanical Garden

baguio trip caption

One of the many green spaces in the city, the Baguio Botanical Garden (renamed Centennial Park) is located between Wright Park and Teacher’s Camp, along Leonard Wood Road.

This is another popular attraction in the city where visitors can enjoy the relaxing atmosphere of the verdant surroundings. The extensive garden park is just a short drive from Baguio’s Central Business District. It has many walking paths where you can see many photo-worthy spots. It also harbors the Baguio Arts Guild and the Igorot Village.

Address: 37, Leonard Wood Road, Baguio City Opening Hours: 6:00 AM – 6:00 PM (Daily). The opening hours might change, so please check the official website or Facebook page before visiting. Entrance Fee: FREE

Wright Park

baguio trip caption

Another vast greenery is the Wright Park , named after the former Governor-General Luke Edward Wright.

This is a favorite leisure spot for both locals and tourists. It’s a lush park that offers walking and jogging trails, biking paths, and rest spots. It features a long pond or pool that almost covers the whole stretch of concrete path linking the Wright Park Kiosk and The Mansion facade. It also has a pine tree-covered forest hill adjacent to the horse stable.

If you want to go horseback riding in Baguio, Wright Park provides quite a number of horses to choose from, plus it’s not too far from the city center.

Address: Wright Park, Pacdal Circle, Baguio City Opening Hours: 6:00 AM – 7:00 PM (Daily). The opening hours might change, so please check the official website or Facebook page before visiting. Entrance Fee: FREE Horseback Riding Rate: P200 for 7 rounds

The Mansion

Wright Park’s long concrete path with a pool leads to the gate of the Mansion House , popularly referred to as The Mansion. It was commissioned in 1908 to serve as the official residence of the US Governor-General in the Philippines. It underwent reconstruction in 1947 after sustaining huge damage during the Second World War.

baguio trip caption

Presently, it functions as the official summer palace of the President of the Philippines. It is also the site for other important state functions and international gatherings.

Address: The Mansion, Baguio-Bua-Itogon Road, Baguio City Opening Hours: 24/7 (Mansion Gate). Most of the time, the Mansion is closed to the public, so visitors can only get a glimpse of the actual mansion from the entrance gate.

Mines View Park

Usually crowded with hordes of tourists, Mines View Park is definitely one of the most popular tourist spots. My local friends say that this is more like a tourist trap, but we’re tourists so go check it out still and see why it’s popular in the first place.

It features an observation deck that presents a panoramic view of the former gold and copper mines of Itogon town below and the mountains beyond. This is also one of the best spots for sunrise watching.

Mines View Park

If you want to avoid the crowd, go there early in the morning. The place is peppered with numerous shops, stalls, and peddlers selling souvenir items, clothes, trinkets, food, and even plants! The entrance to the park is located along Gibraltar Road.

Plant sellers also abound in the area. Baguio’s chilly atmosphere makes it favorable for growing plants — flowering, herbs, and ornamental. The wide range of choices will make veteran and newbie plantitos and plantitas go gaga over these bloom and foliage babies.

Address: Mines View Park, Gibraltar Road, Baguio City Opening Hours: 6:00 AM – 8:00 PM. The opening hours might change, so please check the official website or Facebook page before visiting. Entrance Fee: P10 (Adult); P5 (Children)

Good Shepherd Products

Not far from Mines View Park is a place where you can get the famous ube jam . It’s a quintessential pasalubong stop in Baguio where tourists willingly wait in line for the signature ube jam and other favorite products.

Good Shepherd Baguio

What makes buying from Good Shepherd special and fulfilling is its advocacy. Good Shepherd has built a good reputation for producing quality products for a cause. So where does your money go? Check the packaging (usually printed on the lid): “You help send us to college each time you buy our products”. The proceeds will be used to help send the Cordillera youth to college.

Other products are strawberry jam (seasonal), blueberry jam (seasonal), peanut cluster, cashew brittle, lengua , snowballs, angel cookies, choco flakes, alfajor cookies, banana chips, sampaloc candy, and more. There’s a strict ordering system — write down your orders first, queue, and hand over your order and payment to the attendant.

Also, don’t forget to try some of their Take Out Products which are basically snack/merienda items. Note that the lines can get too long during the peak season and there is an order limit per person. When they products are sold out, they close the site (like during our last visit).

Address: Good Shepherd Convent, 15 Gibraltar Road, Baguio City Opening Hours: 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM (Daily). The opening hours might change, so please check the official website or Facebook page before visiting. Entrance Fee: FREE

CULINARY ATTRACTIONS

Sample local dishes.

Baguio takes pride in its robust local culinary scene. Making the most of the abundance of ingredients, the locals came up with lots of innovative ways to create dishes and food products that embody the Cordillera region and neighboring Ilocos region, whose influence also seeps into the city.

Many of these dishes are available at various restaurants and eateries around Baguio. Some of the most well-known are pinikpikan (chicken soup), pinuneg (blood sausage) and kinuday (smoked meat), as well as dinakdakan (boiled, sliced and grilled pig’s head parts) and bagnet (deep-fried pork).

Pinuneg and kinuday

But if you want to sample a lot of delicacies at once, head over to The Farmer’s Daughter Restaurant , situated just next to Tam-awan Village. They serve mostly Cordilleran and Ilocano fare, prepared traditionally.

If you prefer a more modern twist, Cafe by the Ruins is an established name in the city’s food scene.

Local restaurants also add their Baguio twist to other Pinoy favorites. Mines View Park Hotel’s ZENZ Bar and Restaurant serves strawberry sinigang and strawberry adobo.

Strawberry Sinigang by ZENZ Bar

You can also go food tripping at the night market, Burnham Park, Ili-Likha, Good Shepherds, and Session Road, just to name a few.

Oh My Gulay Artist Cafe

Oh My Gulay

You might be thinking, Oh My Gulay is a local restaurant. Why does it have its own entry? Well, if you’ve been to this art cafe, you know it deserves its own spot!

Nestled on the top floor of an old building along Session Road, I was not expecting anything for that day’s lunch stop. And to be honest, I was not too excited at first because I’m not really into vegetables. But when I took the last flight of stairs, boy was I blown away by the quirky interiors and decorations! It was like being transported into a secret, mystical world. And the indoor garden setting has its own small pond, too!

Inside Oh My Gulay!

The restaurant has two-level dining areas. The upper level has two separate sections connected by a short wooden hanging bridge. The lower-level dining area has indoor seatings as well as veranda seatings with a view of the city. A collaboration of Oh My Gulay and Vocas, the place also features exhibit areas for local artists. As the name of the restaurant suggests, it serves affordable vegetarian and vegan meals.

Oh My Gulay's Vegetarian Bistek and Sliders

Ili-Likha Artist’s Wateringhole

Lying along Assumption Road is the very peculiar Ili-Likha Artist’s Wateringhole , also known as Ili-Likha Artist Village . It was built by artist and filmmaker Eric de Guia (Kidlat Tahimik), who transformed a vacant lot into this whimsical treehouse-themed food park in 2014.

baguio trip caption

The place highlights the importance of preserving nature and culture through arts and food. It is an evolving work of art with several interesting corners and iconic features like the mosaic-covered staircase.

The homegrown restaurants serve healthy, preservative-free, and organic food. Some of the restaurants are Balbacua, Leandro’s Bistro, Yomichee, Ibana, Little Milkyway Vegan Café, Oh My Gulay, Café Cueva, Kape Kullaaw, Waynu, Scout Burrows, and Natengan Ed Ili.

baguio trip caption

It also houses arts and crafts shops and hosts different events and workshops. The whole place is photo-worthy and visitors will enjoy the relaxing and creative atmosphere.

Address: Ili-Likha Artists Village, 32 Assumption Road, Baguio City Opening Hours: 10:00 AM – 6:00 PM (Daily). The opening hours might change, so please check the official website or Facebook page before visiting. Entrance Fee: FREE

Baguio’s International Restaurants

Aside from the homegrown restaurants, Baguio also offers diverse international cuisines — Korean, Japanese, American, Chinese, and Vietnamese, to name a few. We will write a separate article about it with more details soon so watch out for that.

Baguio Craft Brewery and Craft 1945

If you are the type who likes hunting for local craft beers or you just want to have a chill dinner-and-beer type of night in Baguio, there are good watering holes in the city where you can quench your thirst for beer.

Baguio Craft Brewery is a favorite among locals and tourists alike. It offers a wide selection of craft beers, including its signature craft beers named after Ifugao’s mythic characters.

Craft 1945 , partly managed by Baguio Craft Brewery, is a Spanish-themed restaurant serving premium craft beers, tapas and other Spanish dishes.

Benguet Coffee

Coffee is everywhere in Baguio, and it’s not hard to score Benguet coffee when in town. The city’s high altitude and cooler temperature make it one of the best places in the Philippines to grow coffee.

Kape Umali

You can actually buy some at the public market or at cafés like Kape Umali , which is also the biggest coffee supplier in the province and other parts of northern Luzon. The café serves traditional brews as well as specialty brews like liquor coffee and gourmet coffee. Enjoy the music and appreciate artworks at the cafe’s gallery too! The three branches are located in Shangri-la Village, Mine’s View, and Baguio Market.

Ube and Strawberry Taho

Don’t you dare get out of Baguio without trying strawberry taho . They are everywhere, especially in the vicinity of popular tourist spots including Burnham Park, Session Road, and Mines View Park to name a few.

baguio trip caption

Taho is a distinct Filipino snack made of silken soybean curd (tofu), brown sugar syrup, and tapioca (sago pearls). It’s traditionally served or peddled in the morning but nowadays, it can be consumed any time of the day, depending on availability.

Since strawberries are plenty in Baguio, the locals made their own version by replacing brown sugar syrup with strawberry syrup. And boy did they own it!

If you feel like you’ve had enough of strawberries, ube taho is also available.

Strawberry Ice Cream

baguio trip caption

Still on the topic of putting a twist on regular snacks, the locals are really making the most of their strawberries by coming up with their own strawberry-flavored ice cream. Fine, strawberry ice cream is not new to the market BUT the ones in Baguio taste different. And we mean in a good way.

For us, the best that we’ve tried are those sold at La Trinidad Strawberry Farm. But if you are pressed for time, you can easily find it in downtown Baguio.

Photo of a man enjoying the view in Baguio City

Baguio City is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the Philippines. Filipinos love visiting this place because of its cool climate, stunning views, affordable food, and rich culture and heritage. Our team regularly travels to this beautiful city in the mountains; thus, we created the Ultimate Baguio Itinerary Travel Guide.

Post Updated: September 7, 2023: We updated the travel requirements mandated by Baguio City’s tourism office. We also added the new 24-hour tourism hotline for any concerns. You can call the tourism office at (074) 446 2009. Additionally, we created a Google Map List of places to eat and tourist spots to visit that you can add to your smartphone for easier access. Baguio City: Basic Information and Brief History

Baguio is a highly urbanized city located in the province of Benguet. It is also known as the Summer Capital of the Philippines due to its chilly year-round environment. The city sits 4810 feet (1466 meters) above sea level, and its location is conducive to cultivating different root crops and vegetables.

Baguio City is also abundant in history. During the American Colonial Period in the 1900s, the US Military used Baguio as a hill station. Daniel Burnham, an urban designer, plans the whole city’s distinct layout. Unfortunately, during World War II, the Japanese attacked Camp John Hay, turning the city into ruins.

Currently, Baguio City is one of the most famous tourist spots in the country. But, who could imagine this mountainous city has a lot of historical moments that shaped the Philippines today?

Photo of Microtel in Baguio City

Our Choice: Microtel by Wyndham Baguio City

This is our favorite hotel in Baguio City. Microtel is a three-star hotel that provides outstanding comfort and service to its guest. What we like the most about this place is its location. Microtel is located beside Victory Liner Bus Station and is also accessible to different tourist spots in the city. They also have a complimentary breakfast buffet included in the room package.

Microtel’s rates are slightly expensive, and their standard deluxe room costs around PHP 4,000 a night. But with Agoda, you can book a room online at discounted rates of up to 50% off.  Click this link to see the discounted rates in Microtel.

Baguio City is also best when it comes to food trips. Most restaurants here offer big servings at an affordable price. The servings are so huge that you can share them with friends and family. Here are five of our recommended restaurants and cafes that you should try:

  • Good Taste Restaurant  – Best 24-Hour Restaurant. This food place offers a variety of Filipino Cuisine with huge servings at an affordable price!
  • Oh, My Gulay!  – An artsy place and restaurant located at the heart of Session Road in Baguio.
  • 50’s Diner  – Travel back to the 50s and enjoy the food of the American Era.

Other Information

When is the best month to visit baguio city.

It is best to visit Baguio during December, January, and February. These periods are also the most congested since travelers all over the country want to experience a pleasant cool climate. Furthermore, Baguio City celebrates the Panagbenga Flower Festival annually in February .

Visiting Baguio City during March, April, and May is also good, but it will be slightly warmer than the previous months. Avoid visiting Baguio City from September to November due to heavy rains, and some major highways are impassable because of the increased risk of landslides.

Any additional travel tips in Baguio City?

  • One important keyword:  Follow . Follow your itinerary, the city’s safety standards, and the travel and tour agency.
  • Bring your jackets . The night is colder than you think, and wearing a jacket is an added layer of protection against the city’s cold climate.
  • Always keep yourself hydrated . Baguio City is a high-altitude city, and you might experience altitude sickness if you explore the place on foot. Always bring a water bottle with you to avoid getting altitude sickness.
  • Always bring a small bag . In traveling, you might bring a big 30L to 40L backpack full of clothes and things you need for the following days of your trip. Of course, you will not be getting your heavy bags with you during the tour. Keep your main bag in your hotel room or accommodation. Bringing a small bag helps explore the city without the excess weight.
  • Reservations are king . It’s better to reserve things in advance before any trip or activity. Many travelers visit the city daily, and full accommodation is a common problem. Always book your accommodation in advance, it’s better this way than letting yourselves stay in the street braving the cold night.
  • Have an open mind and be responsible . We are all visitors to this place; be sensitive and respect their culture, values, and norms. Avoid throwing trash and be responsible.
  • If you wish to contact any tourism officials in Baguio City, you can visit their tourism Facebook page at:  https://www.facebook.com/baguiotourism/ .

Hi po, thank you so much, these will surely help us on our upcoming Baguio Trip…

Just want to ask lang po, if we’re planning for a 4D3N – 4 pax trip to Baguio+Sagada, do you think its better to book for a joiners trip going to Sagada? cheaper po ba if ganun? ehehehe salamuchhhhhh.

' src=

hi. what time po open ang cafe in the sky?

' src=

The last time we visited Cafe in the Sky was in 2017. We arrived at 5 AM and the cafe was already opened. I don’t know if it’s still the same today since that area is closed to the public. Only residents of Baguio City are allowed to enter the area.

Have a safe trip!

Hi, totoo bang mahirap ang parking area sa mga tourist attraction? My friend told me na mas better iwan ang kotse sa accomodation then mag-taxi nalang?

Hi Carlo, Yes! The traffic is even worse during the holiday season. Most tourists keep their vehicles in their accommodation and ride a cab instead. Pero, it depends on the tourist attraction na pupuntahan ninyo. If you are planning to visit the most crowded places like (Wright Park, Mines View, Botanical Garden, and Session Road), I advise na mag-taxi na lang kayo. For places like BenCab and Strawberry Farm, you can bring your vehicle since medyo malayo na mga ito and baka mapa-mahal pa kayo if mag taxi kayo. Enjoy your upcoming vacation in Baguio!

Hello! True bang di na need ng QTP/Visita requirements pag nagpuntang Baguio?

Hi Key, I asked the staff from local Baguio Tourism Office and said that QTP is still required when visiting Baguio City. However, based on the experience of my fellow blogger on his recent trip, they are not implementing the QTP strictly anymore. To be safe, just apply for a QTP in case they look for it.

Strawberry ice cream is really something that no one should miss when visiting La Trinidad farms.

Di ko knows yung Cogcoga. Akala ko bundok lang nandoon.

It was an unexpected turn haha. We discovered a high-altitude community filled with joyous and enthusiastic people 🙂

Baguio will always be my second favorite city after Legazpi City, Albay where I grew up.

Nakakatuwa kasi Good Taste din ang una kong hinahanap pagbaba ko pa lang ng bus sa VLiner. Fresh and generous!

Nakacheck in na din ako sa Bed and Bath kaso I really don’t prefer dormitory styles at di ko bet CR nila. Though it’s cheap and very accessible sa down town.Pero last time we were there to ask tariffs, pogi yung front desk lols!

I went to Legazpi City last 2011, I think it’s time to revisit your home city again 🙂

7 Instagram-worthy Buildings to visit in Baguio City

If broken hearts go to Sagada, do healing hearts go to Baguio?

BAGUIO.png

Dubbed as the “City of Pines”, Baguio City remains one of the top destinations for tourists for a quick getaway or for those who want to unwind from the busy city. We couldn’t agree more about it! The place is famous for its greenery, famous attractions and activities that you’ll enjoy with your family, loved ones or with just as your friend.

Sadly, Baguio City government has again closed its doors to non-residents traveling for leisure or other non-essential purposes from September 3 until 19, as COVID-19 cases spike again.

Baguio, soon!

In the meantime, here are some Instagram-worthy tourist spots in Baguio that you can visit soon!

1. Twin Glass Treehouse at Tudor in the Pines

This is probably the best spot for meditation after all the burnout you’ve endured in the city. This twin glass treehouse is located in Tudor in the Pines and is the most interesting cottage area here. Tucked away in the groves of Baguio’s signature pine trees, you’ll never stop dreaming of things you could do and see there.

You should never miss staying at night as these Nordic-inspired villas with glass ceilings offer a vantage point of the Northern lights. Imagine how romantic this spot is while lying down and seeing the night glimmer before your eyes.

2. BenCab Museum

For art enthusiasts, this place is for you. BenCab Museum features works of Philippine National Artist Benedictor Reyes Cabrera. It also serves as a venue to promote and preserve arts with premium collections, from both new and master Filipino artists. The museum also has interesting galleries with various themes from erotica to contemporary art.

After that immersive art experience, stop for a cup of coffee at Café Sabel, their in-house coffee shop where you can relax and enjoy the scenic landscape and small pond surrounding the museum. With the peaceful view and unique atmosphere of the café, you’ll definitely want to revisit.

3. Tam-awan Village

If you want to get a glimpse of traditional Cordillera culture or you’re curious about the native culture of Baguio, this is your go-to place! The Tam-awan Village in Pinsao Proper, Baguio City is a colony of Ifugao houses that showcases arts and activities that are native to Cordillerans. This is also preserved and maintained by Cordilleran artists and it uniquely blends indigenous aesthetics and exquisite Cordilleran craftsmanship. It’s a bit far from the city but is surely well worth the effort. Level up the experience by renting a native hut!

4. StoBoSa Colorful Houses

The colorful houses of StoBoSa, consisting of three (3) sitios , Stonehill, Botiwtiw, and Sadjap, are some of the most photogenic spots in La Trinidad. This giant community mural project created with the local government, artists, Tourism department, and volunteers is inspired and conceptualized based on the vibrant favelas of Brazil. It is a gargantuan mural of colorful sunflowers painted using eco-friendly paint. You can never end your Baguio trip without getting out of your car and taking pictures of it.

5. Dominican Hill and Retreat House (Diplomat Hotel)

Fancy a ghost-hunt?

The two-story stone edifice Dominican Hill and Retreat House depicts 19th-century architecture, built under the supervision of Dominican priest and engineer Roque Ruaño. Initially, it served as a vacation house for members of the Dominican Order, and then as a boarding house and college school. It later became a refugee center and prison camp during World War II, probably why it is said to be one of the most haunted places in the country due to its dark history.

Apart from its historical background, the structure was also recorded as the first earthquake-resistant building in Baguio and the first to have a rain-harvesting facility through its concrete roof deck.

6. Cafe by the Ruins

A trip to Baguio City wouldn’t be complete without a stopover at the famed rustic forest ambiance café, Cafe by the Ruins. You’ll definitely want to photograph every corner of this café from the artful pieces in the café corners, its bamboo fences, and wooden furniture that really adds charm to the place. It gives a serene feeling with the nature vibes. This is definitely a must-visit for romantic dining!

On top of the aesthetics and the supreme menu, it’s also historical. The “ruins” in the name refer to the previous site of the city’s first garden theater, an outdoor cinema that was built in 1912 by Hubert Phelps Whitmarsh. The location again became a ruins site when it was gutted after catching fire in April 2017.

Have you already decided where you will go first?

Baguio Will Always Be Baguio

Posted by Lonely Travelogue | Jul 20, 2015 | Benguet

Baguio Will Always Be Baguio

There are places that you’ve been to and that place seems like a magnet to your soul that you keep on coming back. I’ve got that place in my heart and that is Baguio City. I always hear the pine trees calling me whenever there is a feeling deviated from my normal state – that takes place most of the time.   One Saturday morning, without thinking of any work on Monday, with nothing more than the clothes I wear, and nothing to capture the moment but only my smart phone, we hopped in a bus at Victory Station in Cubao  and dreamed while my eyes were open looking at the sceneries going up to Baguio. Its going to be a long and butt numbing bus ride but who cares I love long travels. I’ve got nothing but my expectations and hope for a cool and nice weekend in Baguio.

baguio trip caption

When we arrived in Baguio, we took a cab going to Teacher’s Camp – a rather hunted place for the many but a perfect retreat place for dreary being like me. You will sleep in a decades old rooms or dormitories, with lush of pine trees, and sweet hum of the myna in the morning – that’s what will you experience in Teacher’s Camp. It was my first time to stay in Teacher’s Camp and I prefer this place than any overprice old hotels in the noisy Session Road . If you want Baguio stay at Teacher’s Camp.   We took a nap and decided to see the night in Baguio along Harrison Road – you know what I mean.

baguio trip caption

Its the Night Market!

baguio trip caption

You won’t go to Baguio to shop for hand down clothes from Hong Kong, but why not? This seems to be an attraction in Baguio during the weekends nowadays.    Jackets, Bags, footwear, jeans, shirts, polo, belts —- everything is sold in the night market. I bought two nice sweater out of impulse for Php25.00 each. Anything more than Php30, I will not buy it. For the purposes of being thrifty at that moment. Aside from the clothes and related stuff, stalls of food items are also present. Your tummy can also do shopping of food – aka food trip.    The next day all I wanted was a cup of “taho” strawberry flavor of course.

baguio trip caption

We spend some time in Mines View Park for where you suppose to see the mountain ranges of Benguet if there is no fog covering the vista. We sat for  a while and contemplated the changes in that once pristine park. I remember a picture of mine riding a horse with cow boy hat. That picture was taken in the 90′ when Mines View Park is not yet dominated by a lot of souvenir shops that looks like a flee market, when there were no big dogs that are overly domesticated by man’s unlimited need of money, when Mines View is just like a park, that picture was the faded glory of the Mines View Park.   I bought a piece of buttered corn sprinkled with salt for our long walk to The Mansion . But not reaching the half way to the Mansion we saw a jeep and instinctively we hopped in it.

baguio trip caption

The Mansion 2015

baguio trip caption

The Mansion 2009   We walk through Wright Park along with other tourist strolling and some, I presume,  residents of Baguio jogging beside the man-made lagoon. On its sides are manicured plants and flowers that can only be seen in cold places like Baguio. It was refreshing to see a  lot of blooming fresh flowers in the park. It makes me want to be there just to smell the aroma of the flowers, the  leaves and the trees.

baguio trip caption

We took a taxi to the public market in preparation for lunch but it turned out a window shopping for souvenirs and pasalubong back home. Walking in the market where organized stalls owners constantly singing their goods to the tourist strolling. I observed two things in the market, first everything is over price – same goods sold at Teachers Camp are much cheaper; and  initial prices will depend on your face value – they know that you are not from Baguio ergo prices are souring like a bird. I am not into too much haggling, but I guess you can discern the real value of a good.

baguio trip caption

I bought a vest with Igorot design for Php200.00 (original price was Php250.00). The intricate design, was similar to the “bahag” I used for our field demnstration when I was in Grade 2. Back then, I do not like the these kind of clothing. But as I travel in the Philippines and in Southeast Asia, I came to love our identity. Upon digging in our rich heritage and culture, I found out that our diversed culture is beautiful and unique.

baguio trip caption

Proudly wearing my Igorot vest, we walked to Burnham Park just to see the park. We’ve been there a many times in the last few years but we just want a glimpse of it and probably observe the people enjoying the park. After some time of staying there my two companion wanted to go back to Teachers Camp and enjoy the cold weather of Baguio on their bed. Me on the other hand went further to the City Hall. The Baguio City Hall  is another symbol of cultural identity of the city. It is a protected area and was declared a national cultural treasure.    I entered the City Hall and read its financial reports posted in the bulletin. I found out that Baguio City has an Internal Revenue Allotment of a little more than Php100 Million, just enough to feed the family of the civil servants of Baguio City.    I went up furher for my real agenda. I wanted to reach the clock tower and from there take an aerial view of the city or Burnham Park atleast. I reached the bell tower but I cannot open the steel gate… tsk… better luck next time.    After my sojourn in downtown Baguio I went to  Casa Vallejo  to watch an old film based from Nick Joaquin’s 1950’s play entitle  A Portrait of the Artist as Filipino . While waiting for the fillm, I swam in the rare titles of books in Mt. Cloud Bookstore and bought a collection of contemporary short stories.

baguio trip caption

Bored and sleepy I left the small movie house in Casa Vallejo with the movie almost finished. I was walking down on the side of Court of Appeals resthouse when I bumped in my two companion heading towards where I came from.     I told them “lets have a hot chocolate” We took the taxi and headed to Chocolate de Batirol inside Camp John Hay.

baguio trip caption

The next morning I wanted to walked around Teacher’s Camp before going back to Manila. Saying goodbye to the pinestrees, the birds and the air is never sad. The way of saying thank you to nature for making your spontaneous trip a memorable and inspiring one.

baguio trip caption

I was amazed by the houses (rest house) inside Camp John Hay. There is a Pink Mansion in Poblete Drive that I tried to knock to see if I can enter and see its detailed architecture. I wanted to enter the unlocked gate but I pulled back and continued walking towards other houses in that area.

baguio trip caption

Ending my weekend in Baguio lying under the pine trees looking at the sky was magical. Marvelous decade old trees are the treasures of Baguio City. Apart from Sesjsion Road’s restaurants, souvenirs of the public market, strawberries of La Trinidad, overlooking sight in the Mines View Park and the cold weather of the city, Baguio will always be Baguio because of the pine trees all over the city.

baguio trip caption

This is not my last blog post about Baguio because I’ll keep on coming back to the city that I love. If there is a chance to relocate and build my own family in Baguio, I would gladly abide to my fate’s path. Only the Lord knows. For now let me show my love for Baguio because Baguio will always be Baguio.

Imagine being on top of that rock and just breathing in the cold fresh breeze,  viewing the lush mountain from a distance and bathing yourself with the rays of the sun as it rises. Surely, this is the Baguio that you loved.

Speaking of mornings, Burnham Park is a great place not only for sightseeing and picnics but also a place to enjoy the cold morning in Baguio while at the heart of the City. As light touches the water of the Burnham lake it creates a beautiful light that make everything appear so serene. Accented by the yellow flowers surrounding the lake and the mist that is above the water makes this the perfect place to spend your early morning.

Baguio is not dubbed as the City of Pines for nothing. Pine trees are definitely Baguio’s trademark, and in this photo, you can almost smell the fresh pine and the sweet scent of fresh cut grass in the morning. Indeed a place where you can say that you still feel that love for Baguio.

Aside from pine trees, flowers also dot the parks and streets of Baguio City. They provide a pop of color amidst the grass or the trees. The flowers of Baguio City will surely bring a smile to your face and brighten up your day.

The rainy season is considered as the low season in terms of tourist arrivals for obvious reasons. However, the rain brings something that is characteristic of Baguio, the pine scent is much more distinct and the colors of the flowers are much more vibrant. If you happen to be at the lake drive during and after the rain you will realize that the air is much more fresh with a hint of eucalyptus scent. When it rains, Baguio becomes a different scene, romantic and nostalgic at the same time.

In the heart of the Central Business District is the Baguio Cathedral. The cathedral’s rich history and grand structure made it one of Baguio’s trademarks. Despite it being in the middle of the city, you can still find serenity inside Baguio’s iconic church.

Baguio is also known for its history and the events that shook the people. At museums you can learn about Baguio’s past but visiting the places where these events took place also provides valuable insight of what the people have experienced. This is a photo of the historic Diplomat Hotel, now known to be haunted but interestingly fascinating to learn about its tragic past.

Baguio City is like a kaleidoscope of experiences, every angle has something different to offer. At night, the City of Pines is a lively place to roam around or chill out while sharing stories with your friends. At the Rose Garden, there are three fountains that come alive especially at night because of the lovely colors that it emits while waters shoots in  rhythmic pattern as if following the beat of a music. Children will surely be amazed of the dancing fountains and their mesmerizing lights. For the observant though, you will surely be amazed when you realized that the fountain, the burham bust, the monument of Dr. Jose Rizal and the Baguio City Hall are almost perfectly aligned.

Baguio on a Budget: A Three-Day Expedition of Scenic Wonders and Gastronomic Bliss

Discovering the magic of baguio: a destination for every budget.

Baguio , the Summer Capital of the Philippines , is a mountainous city in Northern Luzon that offers a breathtaking view and cool weather all year round. Dubbed the City of Pines, it has become a popular tourist destination among locals and foreigners alike. As you explore Baguio , you’ll find yourself surrounded by lush pine trees and rolling green hills.

The sound of chirping birds and rustling leaves will give you a sense of peace and serenity rarely found in big cities. In addition to its natural wonders, Baguio also offers an array of exciting activities that cater to every travel style.

Whether you’re looking for adventure or just relaxation, Baguio has something to offer without breaking your bank account. This guide will take you through a three-day itinerary filled with scenic spots, cultural immersion, culinary delights, and adventure trips that won’t hurt your wallet.

Budget-friendly Travel Options

Before getting into the itinerary itself, let’s first talk about how to get there on a budget. If you’re coming from Manila or nearby provinces in Northern Luzon like Pangasinan or La Union , taking a bus is your best bet.

Victory Liner operates 24/7 with buses leaving every hour from terminals located at Pasay City (EDSA), Cubao (Quezon City), and Caloocan (North EDSA). Fares range from Php 450 – Php 750 depending on the class of bus you choose.

If you prefer to travel by car or motorcycle, there are several routes available depending on your starting point. From Manila via SCTEX/NLEX the TPLEX route takes approximately four hours while those coming from La Union can take Kennon Road which offers scenic views but can be challenging given its steep climb.

If this is your first time in Baguio , your best choice would be to stay within the city proper. There are a variety of accommodations available ranging from budget-friendly hostels to luxurious hotels.

You can find affordable options like Baguio Holiday Villas , Iggy’s Inn , or Microtel by Wyndham . Prices range from Php 1000 – Php 3000 depending on the type of room you choose.

The Ultimate Scenic Spots

The first day of your itinerary will be dedicated to exploring Baguio’s scenic spots. The city is known for its parks and gardens that offer a relaxing escape from the hustle and bustle of daily life. Start your day with an early morning stroll at Burnham Park, a popular attraction located at the heart of the city.

You can rent bikes or paddle boats for an affordable fee and explore the park’s man-made lake or simply take a leisurely walk along its pathways. After Burnham Park, head over to Session Road, which is considered the main thoroughfare in Baguio City .

This place offers various shops selling souvenirs, handicrafts, and food items that are unique to Baguio . It’s also worth mentioning that you can find some restaurants here that offer cheap but tasty meals.

In the afternoon, make your way up to Mount Cloud Bookshop where you’ll find a small bookstore nestled atop a hill overlooking the city center. Take in the stunning view of the surrounding greenery while browsing through their collection of locally sourced books.

Getting Immersed in Culture and Cuisine

On Day 2, immerse yourself into Baguio’s rich culture and cuisine with our itinerary picks that won’t hurt your wallet. To start your cultural immersion journey head over to Tam-awan Village where you’ll learn about traditional Igorot culture through art exhibits and interactive workshops led by local artists. The entrance fee is only Php 50 per person.

Next, satisfy your taste buds with local delicacies that can be found at the Baguio City Public Market. Try out the famous strawberry taho, ube jam, and peanut brittle which are known to be Baguio’s food staples.

Prices range from Php 30 – Php 100 per serving. To end your day on a high note, attend a cultural show at the Bencab Museum where you can witness traditional dances and music performances by different indigenous groups in the Philippines .

The entrance fee is only Php 120 per person which already includes access to the museum’s exhibits. Stay tuned for Day 3 of our itinerary which features adventure trips and exciting eco-tourism activities that will complete your Baguio experience without breaking the bank!

Baguio Adventures

My adventure in Baguio , is one that I shall never forget. It was all like a dream; I think I’ve enjoyed each day that I had no time to write in my diary. It is only now that I’m recollecting the pieces as I try to write down these things that are still vivid in my memory.

Tess, my bestfriend, was with me in many of my travels, and we were both very excited in this one. As auditors, we have been assigned to many places across the country, and it was indeed our first time to see Baguio, a city of cooler climate, named as the Summer Capital of the Philippines.

Early in the morning, the group met at a bus terminal in Caloocan City (a major city in Metro Manila). It was a six-hour ride, and just before lunch came, I just knew we were almost at Baguio as I gazed upon the great fog covering the area. (Baguio is a city in a high altitude, a plateau where you can have a good view of the surrounding scenery.) As the bus went higher up however, we came upon a zigzag road, and I couldn’t help but pray that we may arrive safely. More than the fear however, is the excitement of the days to come.

Arriving at noon, we ate at a fastfood restaurant along Session Road, Baguio. After which, we took a cab to our audit site. Later, we looked for a place to stay, as the audit site did not have proper facilities to keep us warm at night. It was a real challenge to look for lodging in the area as many hotels are already full due to the upcoming “Panagbenga (Flower) Festival”, a festival participated in by tourists and locals alike during February.

Fortunately, a kind man approached us while we were inquiring at Teacher’s Camp. He said he has a place for us at Maryhurst Road. It was already late and we really hope it would suffice. After some negotiations, it was agreed that we’d take the offer.

Upon arriving at the place, I was so glad that we took it because it looked cozy and had the facilities we needed like a hotshower, an electric air pot, extra bedding and even a television set. God had been kind to us indeed and He was not a minute late!

The next day, we immediately began our work. Carrying our working papers and other materials, we walked up the sloping road towards the main street. We did this every morning for the rest of our fieldwork! At first, it was surely not easy. In my mind, it was as though we’re doing a bit of a mountain hiking each day. But the view was really good – tall pine trees, color flowers – and the air was so fresh I really wished I could take it back home! Besides, for people who had been so used to sitting eight hours a day infront of a computer, this was a good exercise.

At the audit site, an employee cooks for our meals daily. I could really attest to his skills, which made our stay at Baguio even more satisfying. Further, vegetables in Baguio are really fresh that they taste sweet and juicy.

Once in a while, we also went to Tuba, a place just outside the city where we also have assigned tasks. It’s a bit higher than Baguio, and quite cooler. It was there that I first experienced a fog at high noon! I was like a child in awe as I watched the fog get nearer until I was virtually swallowed by it. Swallowed by the clouds indeed, who wouldn’t feel like she’s in heaven? The sun was shining through, and the day’s perfect! We even took pictures of ourselves at a nearby park. In the afternoon, while in Tuba, we make it a point to finish our work early and leave at 5pm. That’s because the fog already gets thick by that time and few vehicles are available also to take us back to the city. Besides, it would be very hard to work with all that fog in the way, we’d hardly be able to read as the fog enters the office premises (maybe due to broken windows or lack of proper facility). Tuba was known for that fog, that’s why it’s also known by as “Bahay ng Ulap” or House of Clouds (Fog). They say that in the wet season, it rains almost everyday there.

One time, we shopped at the town’s market (in Baguio), and bought some sweaters, bonnets and gloves. We really laughed at ourselves since we were the only ones wearing gloves in the area. I guess the locals have gotten used to the cold, especially at night. I even saw ladies wearing sleeveless clothes and spaghetti straps.

Before that, Tess and I also shopped for some groceries and explored the area. We passed by Burnham Park on our way to the market. There, one could easily rent some boats to while away the time and spend a romantic evening at the lagoon.

It was already dark when we got home and it was freezin’ cold (at least for me). Every night, we took a cab to Maryhurst since we rarely made it for the last jeepney ride of the day. Most of the time, we met kind drivers. One night though, we encountered someone who is rather weird. He didn’t take the same route and we were afraid we’d get lost. He also kept on talking in a language no one among us could understand. I prayed hard that we may be protected from harm, and I was relieved when we finally made it safely to our place.

On another evening, we experienced a brownout at Maryhurst. It was a good thing I’ve brought my flashlight with me because I wasn’t really comfortable in the dark. Usually, I couldn’t breathe well, and I get scared. Nice thing I was not alone that night. Tess even asked me to tell her a story before we sleep. Soundly then did we sleep.

During weekends, we were able to stroll around Baguio more. My sister Apple even came with a friend to join us one time.

One morning, we decided to try a little horse back riding. My! It was the first time for me. I was afraid I might fall, or the horse may get wild (even if it almost looked like a pony). Well, I just tried to rid myself of all those fears and enjoyed the ride. We just went around the park and felt this kind of relaxation we rarely feel in our stressful workdays. After some time, I think I’ve already gotten used to it and felt more confident, I never knew I could be as confident! Maybe when I practice hard enough, I could even become an equestrian, haha.

Our next stop was at Minesview Park. In Baguio, it is there where you can get a clear view of the mountains and of the mines below. One can even rent binoculars to get a better view of the scenery. Tess and I bought some grilled squid and some grilled corn as we strolled around. It was a relaxing afternoon, and it was nice that we spent it there.

One Sunday, we went to the convent of the Sisters of the Good Shepherd and attended Mass there. Though we didn’t understand some of the words and songs, I felt the solemnity of the celebration. Truly, love and peace has only one language. Same is true with music.

After the mass, we bought some Ube and Strawberry Jam sold by the sisters. And bookworm that I am, I was also able to browse in their bookstore and buy some books to read later.

We also went to see the Philippine Military Academy (PMA) parade. The President was there too, to witness the event! The cavaliers looked so gallant in their uniforms I could almost fall in love with one, haha.

After the parade, we shopped around and bought some souvenirs like keychains and calendars. We also learned of some of their traditions there like the “Flirtation Walk”, a place where a cavalier must win his lady’s heart before the romantic walk was over. I couldn’t help but wish one would someday propose to me in a place like that!

In our Baguio travel, we also witnessed the “Street Dancing”, a prelude to the “Panagbenga (Flower) Festival” where different groups compete to win Best Street Dancing category.

Before the contest itself, there was a parade of all the contestants. We were lucky enough to have a nice spot to see the event. (And that spot is somewhere where we can stand on top of a wall to get a good view of the parade!) The dancers were magnificent, especially the young ones who were so energetic executing their steps. Dressed in colorful costumes and performing to the best of their ability, it was really a sight to watch. I’m just glad none of us fell off the wall while doing that!

Finally, the Parade of Floats. It was there where different floars compete with each other during the “Panagbenga”. Each float used hundreds, even thousands of flowers to create a design of their choice. Some floats were shaped like animals, one like a giant ice cream vendor, another like a flag, still another like a chariot, etc. It was all too wonderful to see! After the parade, those floats were exhibited at Burnham Park and in the evening, a huge bonfire was made to continue the fun and the party.

My sister and I also went to Camp John Hay and the “Panagbenga Market Encounter”. There, we found exhibits of all sorts to highlight the beauty of flowers and plants. I bought some seeds of flowering plants and gave one later to my friend. Apple and her friend also rented some roller blades in a skating rink nearby.

After all the festivities, we thought we’ve seen it all. One of our groupmates however reminded us that we haven’t been to the Botanical Garden yet, which incidentally was very near our lodging house. So before we went home, we went to see the place. There, we took pictures of ourselves with native Igorots (Native people in Baguio) in full costume! We enjoyed the varoius flowers there, and the place itself. Tess even bought some cactus plants.

We also passed by “The Mansion”, the President’s place of residence when she’s in some official business in Baguio.

Last stop was Session Road. There, we found that the road was closed because of the “Panagbenga Festival”. It was wonderful, because instead of vehicles, people are all over the place. There were booths of all sorts that it all seemed very much like a Fair. There were face paintings, books, flowers and souvenirs for sale. There was such a merry atmosphere that we could have easily opted to stay longer were it not for our departure schedule back to Manila.

I paused for a moment and counted once more the many blessings God has given me, things I often took for granted, things many people like me ignore.

Everyday, the world seems to tell us so many things we should grieve about. So many reasons why we should not be happy. But why dwell on these things? If the world asks us why we should be happy, let us ask the world, “Why not?”

DIY tips for a cool Baguio vacation

Experience Baguio with These DIY Tips

Table of Contents

Baguio City, the country’s “Summer Capital,” is a top-of-mind getaway for family and friends even beyond the whole year round because of its cool weather, timeless charm, and infinity of things to do.

With the seamless interconnection of the metro’s tollway system, it has become a virtual next-door neighbor that can easily be reached anytime. But along with the ease of travel comes the issues of traffic jams, lack of parking spaces and overtourism, particularly on weekends.

And with the sought-after monthlong Panagbenga Festival just around the corner, we can expect tourists to troop to the mountain resort to participate in the festivities.

Below are some practical hacks to experience the city with less hassle and explore beyond the usual go-to places.

Victory Liner Royal Class

1. Take a bus.

Because of its allure and popularity, the city’s traffic situation has become a major concern. An alternative is to take point-to-point buses such as Joy Bus of Genesis Lines and Victory Liner Inc, which can take you there in just about 4 hours, under P 1,000 one-way and can be booked online. These premium coaches also go to the NAIA terminals, major malls, the Paranaque Integrated Transport Exchange (PITX), Clark Freeport, and other major cities for easier commuting.

Victory Liner boasts a spacious terminal and route network across northern Luzon and can bundle travel packages with Microtel Hotel. It recently launched its top-of-the-line Royal Class sleeper buses to give commuters a stylish transportation option where they sleep soundly while traveling.

If bringing your own vehicle is necessary, visiting on weekdays to avoid the weekend rush and when Session Road is closed to vehicular traffic for the outdoor market and interactive creative art activities is ideal.

Camp John Hay Forest Trail

Rediscover the ageless charm of the “City of Pines” through the Camp John Hay Forest Bathing Trail, where you can trek, commune with nature, and get a therapeutic experience as you cut across the pine forest.

Local birdwatchers and the Department of Tourism-Cordillera Administrative Region validated the presence of at least 21 bird species, which include the Benguet bush warbler, red crossbill, and the Philippine hawk cuckoo. With a forest path already in place and easy-to-spot avians, birdwatching is expected to be the city’s next tourist drawer and recreational activity inside the former US military facility.

Baguio has become a food hub of northern Luzon with several dining outlets offering a wide range of cuisine—from homegrown indigenous dishes to fusion food, gourmet specialties, Filipino and international favorites, coffee shops, bars, and everything in between.

Restaurants in the city’s outskirts lure you away from the madding crowd to savor a sumptuous meal in a relaxing location.

BenCab Museum Farm & Gardens

Asin Road in Tuba, Benguet, is an emerging restaurant row with the mushrooming of specialty dining spots. BenCab Museum of National Artist Ben Cabrera, a pioneer in the area, offers a visual and gustatory feast with its unique mixture of paintings and artworks.

A cozy dinner place is Bistro Lokal of Chef Miko Dy along Magsaysay Ave., which serves a new twist on Filipino classics created around the farm-to-table dining concept to support local farmers. He also serves a 7 to 10-course degustacion for small groups with a performance of Cordilleran music and dance.

Of course, there’s Session Road for the old-time favorites and quick takeaway food in Sunday pop-up stores.

4. Stay at a homey lodging.

With the influx of tourists at any given time, booking your hotel ahead of time with DOT-accredited establishments or reputable online reservation sites such as Airbnb is advisable.

The latter is a growing preference among family and group travelers because of the cheaper rates, homey and spacious atmosphere, bigger capacity, and the option of cooking your own food in the kitchen.

Coupled with the warm hospitality of the Baguio folk, AirBnB offers diverse locations for an inexpensive and memorable staycation in the highlands.

Mountain Spring Homes

Among the highly-searched accommodations because of their ideal locations, incredible views, and favorable reviews of hosts are Baguio Sweet Home in Dominican Hills and Best Baguio Ambiance Country-Style House in Bgy. Lualhati, the stately European-style Tudor House at Tudor in the Pines, Lookout Cottage in Outlook Drive, and Mountain Spring Homes near Magsaysay Ave.

Cozy Cabins in Baguio

Outside the city limits is Cozy Cabins in Itogon, Benguet, which boasts stunning views of the Cordillera mountain ranges.
