Cancun Visitors Guide: The Best Things To Do In Cancun

Welcome to Cancun Mexico

Cancun is one of Mexico’s largest and most popular vacation spots. It attracts millions of visitors from all over the world each year. Cancun all inclusive resorts are the biggest draw, but the beaches, the water, and the nightlife make Cancun a top Caribbean destination. Are you looking to plan the perfect Cancun vacation? Our complete guide to Cancun has everything you need to know for your stay. From the best things to do and the top attractions, to travel tips and when to visit. So start planning your dream Cancun vacation with Island Life Mexico!

Cancun Map

A Bit Of History

Like many towns in the Mexican Caribbean, Cancun was once a Mayan cultural center. This particular piece of land was essential for the Mayan fishing and maritime trades. After the Mayans left the area and prior to the 1970s, Cancun was all but forgotten. Surviving with just 100 residents.

Fast forward to the 1970s, when the Mexican government deemed Cancun the best place to build the next Caribbean tourist destination!

The Mexican government actually had to finance the first few resorts themselves because it took a lot of convincing to get investors interested. Yet by the mid 1980s, Cancun had achieved its goal. It was the IT destination in Mexico.

Cancún Quintana Roo Mexico

Cancun Today

Since 1989, Cancun has seen significant changes and growth. It has become Mexico’s liveliest city, drawing millions of visitors each year. The rise of all inclusive resorts has made it a popular choice for vacationers seeking convenient and comprehensive experiences. Cancun’s pristine beaches, known for their soft sand and warm blue waters, have become iconic symbols of this coastal paradise. The city offers a range of adventurous attractions, such as water sports and eco parks, adding to its appeal. With a bustling nightlife and a diverse culinary scene, Cancun offers something for everyone. It has truly become one of the most sought after destinations on the Caribbean.

Is Cancun Safe?

Is Cancun Safe?

Cancun is widely considered a safe city, especially compared to other cities in Mexico.

While gang related crime has risen a bit in recent years, it typically happens well outside of tourist areas and doesn’t target tourists.

With tourism the heartbeat of the Cancun economy, locals and government officials do their best to keep the crime rate low and the city safe. As long as you don’t go looking for trouble, use common sense, and are generally aware of your surroundings, Cancun can be enjoyed greatly and safely.

Where is Cancun?

Cancun On A Map

Cancun is located on the east coast of the Yucatan Peninsula by the Caribbean Sea. It is approximately an hour north of Playa Del Carmen and two hours north of Tulum . A flight from Houston or Miami is a quick two hours as well.

Adjacent to the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef  (the second-longest coral reef system in the world), Cancun is in a perfect spot for turquoise Caribbean waters, white sand beaches, and world-class diving and snorkeling. This is DEFINITELY the island life!

The Best Time to Visit Cancun

Looking for the best time to go to Cancun? The tropical climate in Cancun is quite predictable, and easy to make plans around. Without much of a temperature difference throughout the year, (the average temperature lingers around 83° F) it’s the rainy season that most travelers pay attention to.

January – April

Perfectly warm and clear weather-wise, but sees the highest influx of tourists. If you are not a people person, consider this. The ocean, cenotes and swimming pools that aren’t heated can still be a little chilly for some.

May – October

The hottest and most rainy months of the year but still plenty of sunshine and fantastic warm water for snorkeling & diving. Also, the hurricane season peaks in September and October, so keep an eye on the forecasts and definitely get travel insurance just in case. Fewer tourists mean you can typically expect lower rates at hotels, resorts and tour companies during this time.

November – December

The autumn-winter months are considered by many to be the best times to visit Cancun. The hurricane season has passed by this time, and the humidity is low. It can be a little “cool” in the evenings.

  When Is Cancun Hurricane Season?

Cancun hurricane season begins in late May and lasts until early November, with the peak occurring between August and October. The odds of a hurricane hitting Cancun are low (less than half a dozen hurricanes have hit the Yucatan in the past 40 years), but hurricanes traveling near Cancun can still cause inclement and severe weather. Be sure to check weather reports ahead of time, and we always suggest getting travel insurance during these months just in case.

How to Get to Cancun & Around

There are a few ways to get to Cancun and around the city.

Mexico Airport

Arrival By Air

Most people fly directly to Cancun as numerous international flights arrive in Cancun daily. Cancun International Airport (CUN) is located in Cancun City (Centro) and is around 13 miles from the Zona Hotelera. It is the largest airport in the region and greets more than 20 million visitors a year.

Search for great deals on flights here .

Airport Shuttles in Cancun

Private or Group Shuttles can be pre-arranged to pick you up at the airport and take you to your accommodation. Group shuttles may stop at numerous hotels before yours, so this method could take much longer than a private shuttle (while being a bit cheaper).

Shared shuttles are around $10 per person, while a private minivan shuttle can be booked for around $30-$40 per van. We recommend getting a private shuttle if you are in a group of 2 or more people.

You can easily book ground transportation from the airport to your hotel here .

Taxi in Mexico

Taxis in Cancun

Taxis are everywhere and will take you straight from the airport to your accommodation. The price is highly regulated so ask at the taxi stand for the price. Typically $40-$50 dollars to locations in Centro or the Hotel Zone. We recommend pre-arranging an airport shuttle instead (see above).

Taxis are a convenient way to get around Cancun for sure. Within the hotel zone or within Centro, prices are around $4-$7 dollars. Traveling between the Hotel Zone and Centro is $10-$15 one way. Your hotel can typically call a taxi to pick you up when you’re ready to depart your hotel.

Taxis between Cancun and Playa del Carmen or Tulum are an easy option but can be quite expensive. Be sure to discuss the prices in advance of taking the ride, so you don’t get overcharged.

Island Life Mexico

Rental Cars in Cancun

Renting a car may be the most convenient choice depending on how much exploring you plan to do on your own. It is an easy and affordable option with rental cars costing as little as $15 a day. Be sure to check if your hotel has parking available.

The roads between Cancun, Playa del Carmen, and Tulum are very straightforward and safe. Having a rental car will give easy access to Cenotes and other sites outside of town. Watch out for Topes! (speed bumps).

Search for great deals on rental cars here .

Buses in Mexico

Buses in Cancun

The most affordable and increasingly popular form of transport, buses go to most places you want to go, and some are even air-conditioned. Keep in mind that this is the slowest and least comfortable way to get around.

From the airport, there are frequent public buses available into the city. From Tulum and Playa del Carmen, buses are also widely available. Consult your hotel for pickup/dropoff locations.

Things to Do in Cancun

Cancun's top highlights.

There is so much to do in  Cancun!  From live shows to sailing cruises and more, it’s really easy to make each day in Cancun a special experience. Here are just some of the activities you can enjoy!

Cancun Beaches

1. Have A Beach Day

The Hotel Zone beaches go on for miles and are sandy and fantastic. Most resorts have their own stretch of beach with loungers and day beds but feel free to walk down the beaches to find your favorite stretch of sand.

Playa Delfines is the most popular (and beautiful) public beach and is a great place to take a swim and lay out for a tan. The water can get a little choppy at times, so it’s not ideal for small children. Delfines is home to the famous colorful “Cancun” sign too for those looking for that classic Instagram shot. For better swimming, try Playa Chac Mool which is also in the Hotel Zone. Gentle, quiet and tranquilo.

For more Cancun beach info and great beach recommendations, be sure to check out our Cancun Best Beaches Guide .

*Note: Since 2008, Sargassum (seaweed) has regularly arrived on the Caribbean coast of Mexico (Cancun, Tulum, Playa del Carmen, etc.) from April to August. Many resorts and beaches remove the seaweed from the sand daily, but it can pile up by the water’s edge and be stinky in places where it’s not removed. For this reason, we suggest getting a hotel with a nice pool area for swimming or spending some time on the islands of Cozumel or Isla Mujeres which are largely protected from the seaweed.

Visiting The Adventure Parks in Cancun

2. Experience The Adventure Parks

About an hour south of Cancun are a cluster of world famous adventure parks that are unlike anything you’ve probably experienced before.

The most famous is Xcaret , with its meandering canals you can swim through, incredible beach coves, cultural shows, jungle hikes, and so much more. They are a little pricey, but the adventure parks are widely considered a must-do in the area.

Other very popular parks include Xplor with its caves, ziplines, rafting and ATVs, Xel-Ha with its waterslides, snorkeling, mangrove tubing and other water activities, Xplor Fuego a nighttime torchlight adventure, Xenotes cenote experience, Xoximilco floating fiesta and the oddly popular Xenses optical illusion park.

ISLAND LIFE TRAVEL TIP : GET TRAVEL INSURANCE

Travel Insurance is a must in our opinion. Standard health insurance likely doesn’t cover you while outside of the country so travel insurance will cover any emergency medical needs as well as trip cancellation, lost or stolen luggage (it happens), flight delays, missed connections and more. You can easily compare the top-rated travel insurance plans here .

Chichen Itza near Cancun

3. Take A Day Trip To Chichen Itza

If you’ve never been to a Mayan ruin, why not start with one of the best! Chichen Itza is an epic collection of temples and monuments that are worth the trip to get there.

Around a two-hour drive from Cancun, many people combine the adventure with a swim at a cenote on the way back to cool off.

You can rent a car and do the drive yourself, but most people book either a private tour or take a group tour for simplicity. This also allows you to zonk out in the van on the way back! Note that group tours typically do not include the park entrance fee of $30 USD adult or $5 child.

This top rated group tour  to Chichen Itza includes buffet lunch, a trip to Valladolid, and swimming in a cenote on the way back. Here’s a great private tour .

Don’t mind getting up early? Check out this awesome sunrise tour to Chichen Itza !

Swim In A Cenote in Cancun

4. Visit A Cenote

Talk about healing properties. The cenote choices in the Cancun area are vast and diverse as there are literally dozens of incredible locations nearby. A cenote is typically formed when a cave has collapsed on itself and then fills with rainwater or natural underground spring water. You can swim, scuba dive, snorkel or just walk through one of these breathtaking and powerful forces of nature.

Explore cenote tours from Cancun here .

For more cenote info and great cenote recommendations, be sure to check out our Ultimate Cenote Guide .

Snorkeling and Scuba Diving in Cancun

5. Go Snorkeling or Scuba Diving

Hire a tour company to jet you around the lagoons or go with a dive shop and see what lies beneath.

The  Underwater Sculpture Museum at MUSA has become quite a popular attraction in recent years. Over 500 sculptures were built and installed in the shallow blue waters in an attempt to rebuild the reef system.

The Island of Cozumel , just a short ferry ride away, is known to be one of the best places in the world to dive and snorkel, so if you have the time, we recommend you try it! But there are plenty of other diving and snorkeling options as well! Get in the water and explore. A true treasure awaits.

This is one of the more popular snorkeling tours that visits several reefs and a shipwreck not to far from Cancun.

Check out a variety of scuba diving options for beginners and experienced divers.

Vibrant nightlife in Cancun

6. Enjoy The Nightlife

You are in the Mexican Caribbean’s party center, after all! The northern part of Zona Hotelera is called Punta Cancun and is the nightlife party area with plenty of clubs and tourist bars. Some say the best club to dance and drink the night away is Coco Bongo but don’t let us sway your decision. There are many places to party on offer, mainly in the Zona Hotelera.

This VIP Admission package to Coco Bongo comes with skip-the-line VIP entry (the lines here can be crazy), excellent seats for the shows, 15 premium drinks and more.

This Gold Pass to Mandala Club Cancun includes admission and $50 of food and drinks.

Rio Secreto Nature Reserve in Cancun

7. Explore The Rio Secreto Nature Reserve

This wild little day trip isn’t what you usually think of when you think of Cancun, but don’t let that stop you from taking a break from the sunshine and trying out a new adventure!

Rio Secreto (The Secret River) is an underground cave/cenote system filled with stalactites, stalagmites and beautiful fresh water that you’ll spend the day wading and swimming through.

Small group tours include a guide, transport, lunch, wetsuits, hard hats, water shoes and more. This is widely considered an unforgettable experience.

This is definitely one of the most popular tours and has an option for hotel pick up for convenience.

The neighboring islands of Cancun

8. Visit The Islands

Just off the coast of Cancun are the magical islands of Isla Mujeres and Isla Contoy . If you don’t have the time to spend a few days on the laid-back Isla Mujeres, be sure to take a day tour to visit.

There are a wide variety of catamaran and snorkeling tours available departing from Cancun. If you feel like getting a little more “wild,” include a stop at the Isla Contoy nature preserve.

Here are a number of excellent day tours to Isla Mujeres.

These are the top rated tours to Isla Contoy .

9. Check Out Cancun Centro

If you skip downtown Cancun (Centro), you’re missing a quintessential Cancun experience.

For a glimpse at the local culture, check out the public square Parque de las Palapas. The square comes to life at night with free concerts, dance performances, and street artists working the crowds with slapstick routines.

For a traditional market experience, don’t miss browsing the aisles at Mercado 23 for colorful crafts and unique Yucatecan garments you won’t find anywhere else. You will also find a plethora of fantastic dining options in Cancun Centro.

If you want to explore the downtown area in a group setting, we recommend this Cancun City and Shopping tour .

10. Experience a Temazcal Ceremony

An ancient Temazcal ceremony can take different forms depending on where you are in Mexico. Temazcal is a cleansing ceremony that is typically performed in a stone-walled hut similar to a sweat lodge. The heat ritual and the shaman’s guidance provide a unique mental and physical experience.

The Temazcal ritual dates back centuries and is deeply rooted in ancient Aztec traditions. Benefits of Temazcal include clearing the mind, relieving pain, and reducing tension and stress.

There are a few highly rated Temazcal ceremonies in Cancun, including this Mayan Ceremonial Night and this Night Mayan Temazal Purification Ceremony .

11. Visit The Mayan Museum

If you want to add a little culture to your trip, you can get a Mayan ruin experience closer to Cancun’s Hotel Zone by visiting the Museo Maya.

The museum is an excellent place to learn about the history of the pre-Columbian Maya. If you are also planning to visit Chichen Itza, a stop at the museum will help you understand the Mayan history and culture before you go.

12. Go Tequila Tasting

Tequila and tequila tasting are art forms in Mexico, so why not enjoy this age-old tradition? Learn the difference between Blanco, Reposado and Anejo, and try local brands you may not have access to back home. Many restaurants offer tequila tasting options or ask your hotel about a more involved experience.

There are plenty of options for tequila tastings in Cancun, but if you want more of a group tour experience, check out this Tequila Tasting Experience . Or this Taco and Tequila Tour in downtown Cancun.

13. Hit The Golf Course

It’s no surprise that a world-class golf scene has developed around Cancun thanks to the tropical weather and resort culture here. With numerous options, the biggest issue you will have is where to schedule a tee time!

From gorgeous coastal views to lush tropical landscapes, the golf courses of Cancun offer an enjoyable experience for players of all skill levels. Designed by renowned architects, these golf courses feature manicured fairways, challenging bunkers, and well-placed water hazards.

These courses are the perfect blend of natural beauty and exceptional design. Playing a round of golf in Cancun allows you to enjoy the breathtaking setting, all while creating lasting memories on and off the greens. The Jack Nicklaus designed Riviera Cancun Golf Club is one of the top rated courses in the area. The Puerto Cancun Golf Club is also highly recommended.

14. Take A Sunset Cruise

While sunsets are beautiful in Cancun, the area isn’t ideal for watching sunsets from the beach as the sun sets behind you. If you want to catch a magical Cancun sunset, you’ll definitely want to get out on the water. Sunset cruises are incredibly popular in Cancun and for good reason. They’re a great way to unwind after a day of adventure in and around the city. You can just sit back and relax, drink a margarita and watch a gorgeous technicolor Caribbean sunset!

Cancun offers some fantastic sunset cruise tours , like this Luxury Sunset Sailing Cruise , where a light dinner and open bar are offered.

15. Discover Nichupte Lagoon

Nichupte Lagoon is a natural wonder with beautiful mangroves and water systems to explore. The awe-inspiring color of the lagoon is thanks to the mix of fresh and saltwater. There are a number of ways to see the lagoons including, kayak, sailboat, speedboat and more.

One of the best ways to discover the Nichupte Lagoon is by kayaking. As you explore the mangroves, keep an eye out for birds, fish, and even small crocodiles. This top-rated Guided Kayaking Tour is a half-day tour with hotel pick-up. We highly recommend the sunrise tour option if you want to see crocodiles sunning themselves on the shore!

If paddling isn’t your thing, consider this Wildlife Viewing Boat Tour that allows you to explore the lagoon with an English-speaking guide. The boat sails around 5 pm daily, and you will see an epic Caribbean sunset and all of the beautiful wildlife that calls Nichupte Lagoon home.

Great guide. Thank you for the excellent info! Can’t wait for our trip to Cancun next month.

I am looking to stay at the new resort, the beach is very important to us, could you please let me know if there is a seaweed problem on this part of the area????

Hey Anna! I’ll reiterate what written above in case you didn’t see it. Since 2008, Sargassum (seaweed) has regularly arrived on the Caribbean coast of Mexico (Cancun, Tulum, Playa del Carmen, etc.) from April to August. Many resorts and beaches remove the seaweed from the sand daily, but it can pile up by the water’s edge and be stinky in places where it’s not removed. For this reason, we suggest getting a hotel with a nice pool area for swimming or spending some time on the nearby islands of Cozumel or Isla Mujeres which are largely protected from the seaweed. Hope that helps!

This visitor guide is making us even more excited to visit Cancun. We can’t wait to take a day trip to Chichen Itza. Thanks for the guide.

The cenotes look amazing! This was so helpful, thank you!

Glad you like the guide!

Thanks for the excellent site. Great info.

The second photo from the top of this page… the caption reads “Cancun At Sunset”. This photo is actually of a sunrise. The Cancun shoreline faces East.

Hilarious! You are totally correct! The sun sets over the lagoon from that vantage near the Hotel Zone. I’ve made the correction. Thanks for catching my goof!

The Secret River had such a magical feel. We loved the vacation, but this had to be my favorite part! I’d definitely go there again.

Thanks for the helpful info!

Oh man, as a first time visitor to Cancun I was completely overwhelmed and your guide just saved my life! Seriously thank you so much for posting this. It has made my visit so much more relaxed. I am going to read the Cenotes one next!

We LOVE the lucha libre show idea. We will definitely look into that when we visit next month.

Muchas Gracias! What a wonderful website!

18 Best Things To Do in Cancun

Cancún, Mexico, is known for its white sand beaches, its adventure tours and the many must-see attractions you can visit nearby. For example, this region of Mexico earns praise for cultural landmarks like Chichén Itzá and the underwater art museum

cancun tourist information

Chichén Itzá Chichén Itzá

U.S. News Insider Tip:  Visit El Mestizo, about 3.5 miles from Chichén Itzá, for an authentic Mexican lunch after touring the archeological site. I recommend ordering the pollo adobado, which remains one of my favorite chicken meals I've ever had abroad. –  Leilani Osmundson

Chichén Itzá is a large Mayan archaeological site and one of the most notable and recognized landmarks on the Yucatán peninsula. The site itself was originally a main hub of Mayan civilization and has since been named a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The focal point of the ruins is the pyramid-like El Castillo that was once used by Mayans as a temple to the god Kukulkan.

Isla Mujeres Isla Mujeres

U.S. News Insider Tip: For close proximity to Isla Mujeres during your beach vacation, consider staying at the Grand Fiesta Americana Coral Beach Cancún hotel, located on the tip of Zona Hotelera. The ferry to Isla Mujeres departs from Playa Caracol, which is located just a few minutes' walk from the hotel. – Holly D. Johnson

To escape the frantic beat of Cancún's nightlife and beaches, head to Isla Mujeres ("Island of Women"). There is little to do on this 5-mile island just a 30-minute ferry ride from Cancún, but travelers like it that way.

cancun tourist information

Playa Tortugas Playa Tortugas free

Widely considered a beach spot for locals, Playa Tortugas is known for its relaxed atmosphere and clean sands. The area also boasts impressive views and travelers report several places nearby to grab a meal or drink. From here, daily ferries also depart for Isla Mujeres .

Some travelers enjoy Tortugas so much that they choose the area over their own hotel's beach. Visitors appreciated that the public beach is free to enjoy and the water is calm and relaxing (a particular highlight for those traveling with children). Others warned of pushy salespeople and crowded sands. Playa Tortugas is located in Cancún just northwest of the Hotel Zone and accessible by bus or rental car. Umbrella and chair rentals are also available.

El Rey Ruins El Rey Ruins

While they may not have the awe factor of  Chichén Itzá , the El Rey Ruins have convenience on their side. Located in the heart of the Hotel Zone, these ruins are extremely accessible to visitors, and the site's small size makes it easy to see in a short time. Thought to be used as a royal retreat at one point, El Rey dates back to 1250.

But for many past visitors, the ruins themselves were not the primary attraction: people flock to El Rey to mingle with the hundreds of iguanas that have invaded the former Mayan town, saying the iguanas make for some unforgettable photo-ops.

cancun tourist information

Isla Contoy Isla Contoy

Isla Contoy National Park is a small island located off the coast of mainland Mexico, north of Cancún and Isla Mujeres . For the most part, this island is known for its stunning white sand beaches and spectacular nature views, and as a refuge for seabirds (more than 170 species) and other marine wildlife. The island is located alongside the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef, the second longest reef in the world, which makes it an ideal spot for snorkeling or diving to see coral, tropical fish or both in some of the clearest waters in all of the Caribbean.

The only way to visit Isla Contoy is through a boat tour company, but the trip can be worth it since the small destination only allows up to 200 visitors per day. While some boat tours that visit Isla Contoy include snorkeling, lunch or both, many also combine the visit with a few hours at Isla Mujeres. Either way, most boat tours that visit the island start at around $130 per adult, with many costing upwards of $150.

Cancún Golf Courses Cancún Golf Courses

With tropical weather and luxury resorts luring tourists from around the globe, it's no surprise that a world-class golf scene has developed around Cancún. With numerous distinct options, the biggest issue facing golfers is where they should schedule a tee time. One memorable range is the 18-hole Playa Mujeres Golf Club, which players describe as a satisfying mix of challenging and scenic. However, reviewers do note that the course is expensive to play if you're not a guest at the Dreams or Secrets resorts. Alternatively, El Camaleón Mayakoba at the Fairmont Mayakoba, Riviera Maya offers 18 holes on a course that winds through natural features like cenotes, mangroves and jungles.

Past travelers praised the assortment of golf options associated with Cancún's numerous resorts. One favorite is the Iberostar Golf Club Cancún at the Iberostar Selection Cancún , which golfers commend for its excellent customer service. However, reviewers have said the course is expensive to play. Additionally, know there are crocodiles on the course so you should make sure to bring extra golf balls or buy some on-site so you don't have to retrieve a lost ball. Moon Palace Cancún also boasts a signature golf course, which provides 27 holes designed by Jack Nicklaus. Past visitors appreciated the inclusion of a driving range and practice green among the golf-related amenities.

Avenida Kukulkan Avenida Kukulkan free

Even if you don't seek out Avenida Kukulkan, you'll likely cross its path at least once during your Cancún vacation. That's because Avenida Kukulkan is Cancún's main artery, stretching from downtown through the hotel zone and running south toward the airport. The avenue is lined with pathways and an endless number of shops and eateries, along with hotels and resorts. If you're not strolling along the avenue, you'll likely be riding the bus along it since this is the main route for the buses most frequently used by tourists.

Recent travelers described Avenida Kukulkan as a safe, well-maintained and well-lit, place to walk or jog. In fact, the street is a great place to get in some exercise on your vacation since there are ample sidewalks the whole route. Still, some travelers say there isn't much to do here other than get from one place to another or see the towering hotels that occupy the area.

cancun tourist information

Playa Delfines Playa Delfines free

If you're tired of the standard beaches along the Hotel Zone, try heading to Playa Delfines, which is a largely undeveloped ribbon of sand located near the El Rey ruins . Likewise, the beach often lacks the heavy crowds found elsewhere throughout the Hotel Zone. This is also where you'll find the colorful "Cancún" sign featured on many of the city's postcards and brochures.

Travelers regard Playa Delfines as the quintessential escapist's beach as there is very little in terms of umbrellas or shade and few vendors hawking goods or services. Just be mindful of heavy currents and riptides, since the beach is known for its rough waters.

Avenida Tulum Avenida Tulum free

While Avenida Kukulkan provides the primary artery for Cancún's Hotel Zone, Avenida Tulum serves as the main thoroughfare through the mainland portion of Cancún. The boulevard cuts straight through downtown, providing an excellent avenue for people-watching and exploring. Between restaurants, hotels and other stores, visitors will find an assortment of landmarks along the avenue, including two well-known and oft-photographed statues, the Monumento a la Historia de México and the Fuente del Ceviche. Additionally, Palacio Municipal, headquarters of the municipal government, sits along Avenida Tulum and is sandwiched between a public park and a sculpture garden.

Past travelers enjoyed strolling around Palacio Municipal and the surrounding streets, which offers a unique and much less touristy atmosphere from Cancún's Hotel Zone. Many also rave about the affordable shopping here, as well as the inexpensive places to grab a bite to eat.

cancun tourist information

Playa Marlin Playa Marlin free

Situated in the Hotel Zone about a 5-minute walk from the Kukulkan Plaza shopping mall, Playa Marlin offers a broad stretch of sugar white sand. There's also lifeguards and beach supplies, such as chairs and umbrellas, for rent.

Recent travelers said that Playa Marlin is a beautiful public beach, perfect for those who aren't staying at a beachside resort . Still, some warn of powerful waves and strong undertow. Though the waters can be too rough for swimming, they're great for water sports like parasailing.

Nichupté Lagoon Nichupté Lagoon

Nichupté Lagoon is a vast tropical paradise that's located in between mainland Cancún and the strip of land that makes up the hotel zone. This region has become a natural reserve for the mangrove ecosystem, and it is made up of seven different lakes.

Not only is Nichupté Lagoon popular for fishing, but it sees a range of visitors that participate in activities like kayaking, canoeing and underwater activities like snorkeling throughout the year. The lagoon is also popular for its wildlife tours, which let eager visitors check out local animals like seabirds, migratory birds and crocodiles.

Museo Maya de Cancún Museo Maya de Cancún

Museo Maya de Cancún houses archeological pieces from significant historic sites across Mexico. Within its exhibit halls, the museum displays a range of archeological artifacts, many of which were found at Chichén Itzá , Palenque and Comalcalco. In addition to its memorable artifacts, Museo Maya de Cancún's architecture proves impressive. It boasts floor-to-ceiling, hurricane-resistant glass windows – a necessary design element following the original anthropology museum's closure in 2004 due to hurricane damage.

Past visitors appreciated the archeological site adjacent to the museum, which offers walking trails to explore. They also recommended visiting the museum on a rainy day, as most of Cancún's alternative attractions are outdoors. Many also remarked that some, but not all, of the information shared within the museum was offered in both English and Spanish.

El Parque de las Palapas El Parque de las Palapas free

This small plaza sits in downtown Cancún and blurs the lines between a local and tourist hot spot. Fans of street food will appreciate the assortment of vendors that line the park and offer delicious Mexican dishes. Past visitors praise the readily available churros and marquesitas (a crepe-like dessert). If you enjoy live music, the area also boasts a stage for performances, which generally occur on Friday evenings.

While the park is open 24/7, past travelers suggest visiting in the early evening when you can combine your trip with a fresh, local meal. El Parque de las Palapas sits in downtown Cancún, roughly 6 miles west of the northern end of the Hotel Zone. The plaza's position – a block off Avenida Tulum – makes it easily accessible for anyone staying in or exploring the downtown area.

Museo Subacuático de Arte (MUSA) Museo Subacuático de Arte (MUSA)

Unlike a traditional museum, Museo Subacuático de Arte (Underwater Museum of Art) is composed of concrete structures spread across the seafloor. The underwater museum sits somewhere between Isla Mujeres and the Hotel Zone and is divided into three areas: Manchones, Punta Nizuc and Punta Sam. The more than 470 sculptures found within Manchones are only accessible via scuba diving. Punta Nizuc houses 33 sculptures, which travelers can see while snorkeling in the area. The nine sculptures visible at Punta Sam sit in the shallowest water. Travelers who'd prefer to stay on land can swing by the MUSA's small gallery near downtown Cancún.

In general, past travelers praised the unique experience. Many reviewers also agreed the trip to the underwater museum is well worth it to see the colorful fish and the lifelike statues firsthand. Others were disappointed that they didn't see more statues during boat and snorkel trips.

Xavage Park by Xcaret Xavage Park by Xcaret

Xavage Park by Xcaret is a thrill park that offers activities the entire family can enjoy. Basic admission includes a ropes course, the chance to go kayaking and access to the park's splash zone. Meanwhile, the more robust package includes whitewater rafting, a jet boat ride, a ropes course, monster truck rides, zip lines, kayaking and splash zone access. Both packages include snacks, a buffet meal and nonalcoholic drinks. Note that some age and height restrictions apply to these activities, such as the fact that drivers must be at least 5.2 feet (and passengers must be 4 feet tall) to ride in the monster truck. Children younger than 12 but taller than 4.5 feet must be able to verify their age with a photo ID.

Past visitors seem to agree the park is clean and well run. Most say they had a great time and stayed active while enjoying the weather and scenery. Reviewers also said the food included in the package was tasty.

Coco Bongo Cancun Coco Bongo Cancun

Considered  the  spot for nightlife in Cancún, Coco Bongo isn't your traditional, DJ-controlled nightclub. Instead, thousands of travelers pack the house to witness nonstop performances from acrobats, conga lines, live bands and musician impersonators. A typical night at Coco Bongo involves projected videos, balloons, soap bubbles and confetti.

While Coco Bongo is a nonstop amalgam of cocktails and dancers, you can also dance the night away on the club's dance floor. If you're seeking some stage antics and endless performances, that's another reason Coco Bongo is definitely worth a try. Most travelers say that they had a great night at Coco Bongo, even if their seats offered poor views, there were long lines for drinks and the tickets were expensive.

Do I need a visa?

Mexico has a visa exemption agreement with several countries, which means travelers coming from nations within this agreement (including the United States) don’t need a tourist visa for stays of up to 180 days — as long as they hold a passport valid at least six months beyond the period of intended stay, with one blank visa page.

For more information about visas and which countries are exempt,  see here .

When is the best time to visit?

There are also good deals on offer at this time of year. The average daytime temperatures reach highs of 87 Fahrenheit (31°Celcius) and lows of 73 Fahrenheit (23° Celcius).

Arriving 30 minutes to two hours late to a social function at someone’s house is acceptable. In fact, it is actually polite to arrive late as the host won’t be ready if you arrive on time. The same goes for dining out — don’t be in a hurry. The waiter won’t bring you the bill when you’ve finished eating as it is considered too forceful and rude. You’ll have to ask for the bill but in the meantime, sit back and relax.

When you first visit Cancún , it seems impossible that in the late 1960s, this was just a tiny fishing village surrounded by dense jungle.

However, that's when the Mexican government embarked on a tourism development project that would change this part of Quintana Roo forever – they saw the potential in its raw, natural beauty.

Today, the megaresort is Mexico ’s top tourist destination and one of its fastest-growing cities. Many travelers experience Cancún as a place of wild fiestas, glitzy all-inclusives and gringo-friendly shopping centers – a tropicalized Vegas of sorts.

But it also sits in one of the most biodiverse areas in Mexico, making it a wonderland for anyone interested in wildlife adventures.

The world's second-largest barrier reef lies just offshore, while inland precious freshwater cenotes (limestone sinkholes) abound. Add Maya culture, savory regional cuisine and sophisticated ancient ruins to the mix, and you have one sweet Caribbean getaway.

Here are some of our favorite activities in this splendid southeastern corner of Mexico.

1. Gaze at mind-blowing ancient Maya ruins

Several small Maya archaeological sites dot Cancún's coast, including El Rey, El Meco and San Miguelito . While these ancient settlements are well worth visiting, you should definitely set aside time to hit some of the more spectacular ruins in Tulum , Cobá or Chichén Itzá .

After a stroll around Tulum’s sun-soaked cliffside ruins, head down to the private beach for a refreshing swim in the azure sea. In nearby Cobá, home to the Yucatán's largest temple pyramid, visitors have the unique opportunity to explore the spread-out jungle ruins on a rented bike.

And while it's true that Chichén Itzá gets too packed for its own good, we can say with confidence that the mathematical and astronomical precision behind the main pyramid will leave you floored.

Look no further than the serpent shadow formation that invariably slithers down the structure's north stairwell during spring and autumn equinoxes.

Planning tip: When visiting Chichén Itzá, get an early start to beat the heat and tour bus crowds. On the return to Cancún, consider a stop or overnight at Valladolid , a laid-back colonial city known for its cenotes and enticing Yucatecan cuisine, such as the excellent Maya eats at IX CAT IK .

2. Plunge into sublime cenotes

The ancient Maya believed cenotes were sacred gateways to the underworld, and once you see their deep blue waters and otherworldly stalactites you'll understand why.

Many of these swimming holes make for an easy day trip from Cancún. Among the standouts, the fascinating Maya-run park Cenote Dos Ojos (120km/74 miles south of downtown) allows visitors to go swimming, snorkeling or cave diving.

For a more chilled-out vibe, cool off at Valladolid's Hacienda Oxmán Cenote (165km/102 miles west of Cancún), a former henequén property (a vast estate that produced agave plant fibers) featuring a partially collapsed freshwater cave with hanging vines.

Local tip: Cave diving can be very dangerous and is for certified divers only. Make arrangements through a dive shop and always choose a reputable outfit, such as Scuba Total .

3. Swim with massive whale sharks

Imagine the thrill of gliding through Caribbean waters alongside the largest fish on the planet. From late May to mid-September, whale sharks congregate around Isla Mujeres to mate and to feed on abundant plankton.

This provides the exhilarating opportunity to snorkel amid these majestic sea creatures, who can grow up to 15m (49ft) long. Sea Hawk Divers runs tours led by experienced bilingual guides and recommends July and August as the best months for spotting these gentle giants.

Local tip: When swimming with whale sharks, keep a distance of about 4m (13ft) and do not touch them. Also, head out as early as possible to enjoy a crowd-free experience.

4. Get up close and personal with captivating wildlife

Birders rejoice! For pleasantly uncrowded wildlife watching, book a boat tour to Isla Contoy , an 8.5km-long (28ft) island that's home to nesting sea turtles and more than 150 bird species.

From April to October, you can spot loggerhead, hawksbill and green sea turtles waddling ashore to lay their eggs.

Tour outfit Asterix operates a boat trip that includes stops for snorkeling and educational walks led by the island's resident biologists. The protected sanctuary, now a national park, receives only 200 visitors a day, so reserve your place in advance.

A scuba diver swims past a cross statue on the seabed at Cruz de la Bahia on bottom of sea, Isla Mujeres, Caribbean Sea.

5. Marvel at life-sized sculptures in underwater museum MUSA

Created to divert visitors away from fragile coral reef formations, the Museo Subacuático de Arte (MUSA) exhibits some 500 submerged sculptures off the coasts of Cancún and Isla Mujeres.

The pH-neutral cement pieces, some of which are modeled after real-life locals, can be viewed while scuba diving, snorkeling or aboard a glass-bottom boat.

Cancún's Punta Nizuc, the shallower of the two underwater galleries, is recommended for snorkeling and boat tours, while the 8–10m-deep (26–32ft) Isla Mujeres site, Manchones, is better suited for diving. Most dive shops run tours to MUSA.

6. Soak up culture at the Museo Maya de Cancún

Tired of lazing around on the beach? Brush off the sand and hit the intriguing Museo Maya de Cancún , a first-rate anthropology museum exhibiting Maya artifacts discovered around the Yucatán Peninsula.

Among the permanent collection of some 3500 pieces is a jade mosaic death mask and intricately painted pre-Hispanic ceramics depicting supersized mythological creatures.

The museum and adjacent San Miguelito ruins offer a crash course in Maya culture and history, which will serve you well when visiting the area's many archaeological sites.

Planning tip: The museum's admission price includes access to San Miguelito , a shady jungle-set archaeological site harboring the remains of a small palace and pyramid.

Two lucha libre wrestlers fight in a ring in Mexico

7. Cheer on Mexico's high-flying masked wrestlers

Take a break from the thumping discos and treat yourself to a wacky night of lucha libre (professional wrestling).

Luchatitlán , a shiny new arena complex in the hotel zone's Plaza La Isla, stages three matches featuring colorful masked marvels performing acrobatic maneuvers as they go mano a mano before an electric crowd.

Mexican wrestling has been around since the early 1900s, and it’s still going strong thanks to cultural icons such as El Santo and Blue Demon.

Local tip: For a more affordable and authentic wrestling experience, downtown Cancún's Plaza de Toros , a former bullfighting ring, hosts events from time to time.

8. Escape to Isla Mujeres

Cancún's towering hotels and rush hour traffic make it all too easy to forget that the hotel zone actually rises up from a barrier island. But that's not the case in nearby Isla Mujeres , which looks and feels like a low-key isle.

That's especially true on Playa Norte, where the shallow aquamarine waters and unhurried pace make it one of the most swimmable and relaxing spots on the Mexican Caribbean.

The ferry crossing to Isla Mujeres takes about 20 to 30 minutes, meaning day-trippers can easily be back in Cancún for dinner. To see the quieter south side of the island, rent a golf cart or scooter and stop at beach club Garrafón de Castilla for snorkeling or take in a sunset from lookout point Punta Sur.

A woman holds onto her hat as she walks towards the sea on a crisp, white sand beach in Cancún

9. Bask on sustainable and off-the-beaten-track beaches

We would be remiss not to include one of Cancún's star attractions – its blissful beaches.

The sugary white sands on the L-shaped hotel zone's northern side hug some of the city's most swimmable waters, while the east-facing beaches wow beachgoers with their vibrant color palette of blues, greens and shimmering whites but beware of strong rip tides.

Playa Delfines , one of the most scenic beaches, is a Blue Flag–designated site, meaning it maintains sustainability standards such as acceptable water quality, clean sands and wheelchair access, plus it's far removed from some of the noisy beaches in the tourist center.

Detour: For a glimpse of what Cancún looked like before it transformed into a large-scale resort, head north of downtown to Isla Blanca , a 20km (12-mile) stretch of mostly unspoiled coast. Several large hotels have cropped up on the island's south end, but you can still find quiet sands on the northern tip along a narrow peninsula flanked by the Caribbean Sea, and a lagoon teeming with marine life and kiteboarders. To reach Isla Blanca, rent a car or hire a taxi from downtown Cancún.

10. Savor the local flavor of Cancún Centro

Most locals live in El Centro, so if you skip downtown, you're missing a quintessential Cancún experience.

For a taste of local culture, public square Parque de las Palapas comes alive at night with free concerts, vibrant dance performances and street artists working the crowds with amusing slapstick routines.

For classic regional fare, duck into the palapa -covered (thatch-roofed)  El Pocito for homestyle panuchos (fried tortilla snacks), while for the traditional market experience, browse the aisles at Mercado 23 for colorful crafts and unique Yucatecan embroidered garments.

Planning tip: Bus lines R-1, R-2 and R-27 run frequently between Cancún Centro and the hotel zone from 5am to midnight. They're cheap and you'll never have to worry about getting overcharged by taxis.

AT A GLANCE | GETTING THERE AND AROUND | WHEN TO VISIT | WHERE TO STAY | WHERE TO EAT | THINGS TO DO | TOP TOURS | SAFETY IN CANCUN | WHAT TO PACK | FAQ

This Cancun Travel Guide is both your site map and your bible when it comes to everything Cancun. It’s a summary of all the information included in this Cancun Travel Blog and a go-to resource for the most updated information about traveling to Cancun.

Cancun is one of the most popular Mexican beach vacation destinations together with Los Cabos. Renowned mostly as a spring-breakers destination , Cancun is much more than that, and here below I will show you all the amazing natural attractions tours Cancun has to offer.

I have been living in Cancun for over a decade now and although I am always traveling around Mexico I still consider Cancun my home which is why I suggest you stick around if you want to get fresh insider news about Cancun. 😎

I suggest you browse this site where I will continuously pour information about Cancun, or if you want to save time, check out this Cancun City Guide which is a sort of summary of the site content.

CANCUN HOTEL ZONE AERIAL VIEW

CANCUN AT A GLANCE | THE BASICS

Where is cancun located.

Cancun is located on the north tip of the Mexican Caribbean Coast in the Mexican State of Quintana Roo, which is one of the three states that altogether make the Yucatan Peninsula region.

It borders Yucatan state on the northwest side, the state of Campeche on the southwest side, and with Belize on the southern side.

Distances to the main destinations in the Yucatan Peninsula

Cancun to Playa del Carmen – 68 km / 42 miles Cancun to Tulum – 131 km / 81 miles Cancun to Valladolid – 156 km / 96 miles Cancun to Holbox – 139 km / 86 Cancun to Merida – 303 km / 188

Know before you go

Currency : Mexican Pesos 1 USD = 19 MXN (approx)

Where to exchange money in Cancun – Avoid exchanging your currency at the airport or in your hotel . The best place to do it is a bank or an exchange bureau. There are many commercial plazas in the Zona Hotelera.

Main Airport : Cancun International Airport (CUN)

Electric socket – the most commonly used is the plug that has two flat parallel pins, just like in the US. However, if you are coming from another country you will need a universal travel adaptor.

Mexico Visa – If your country is not listed  on this page , you can enter Mexico without a visa as a tourist, otherwise, you will need to apply for a visa. Since every country is different you should consult the Mexican consulate or embassy in your country.

Mexican Sim Card – I would recommend buying a Mexican SIM CARD for many reasons. Primarily because staying connected it’s a way to stay safe, and also because you can be reachable by your family and friends all the time (unless you don’t want to 😜) and you can share your beautiful vacation on your social)

Language Spoken – Although the official language is Spanish and some prehispanic dialects are still spoken in some communities, English is widely spoken among those who are in the tourism business.

COMPARING CANCUN TO OTHER DESTINATIONS

One of the most frequently asked questions is “Is it better to travel to Cancun or…?” In this section, you will find some interesting posts on how Cancun compares to many popular beach vacation destinations. Please bear with me as I add more and more places.

✅ Cancun vs Isla Mujeres

✅ Cancun vs Hawaii

✅ Cancun vs Puerto Vallarta

✅ Cancun vs Playa del Carmen

✅ Cancun vs The Bahamas

✅ Cancun vs Tulum

✅ Cancun vs Punta Cana

✅ Cancun vs Cabo

✅ Cancun vs Riviera Maya

✅ Cancun vs Jamaica

GETTING TO CANCUN

Cancun International Airport is the second most trafficked airport in Mexico after Mexico City with 22.3 million passengers flying through it in 2021.

From the US you have a connection with the major airline from the most popular hubs while from Europe you also have the option of charter flights from Spain, Italy, Germany, and Belgium.

I always recommend checking on Expedia for flights only or, even more conveniently, packages with flights+hotels.

MOVING AROUND CANCUN

Unfortunately, there is no Uber in Cancun for many reasons which I will explain in a dedicated post. Therefore if you want to move around there are different options which I am going to list here below.

Getting from Cancun Airport to your Hotel

↳ Private Shuttle | best option is booking a private shuttle with a recommended company such as Cancun Airport transportation service from 39 USD/65 USD round trip (up to 3 people).

Cancun airport transportation staff

CANCUN AIRPORT TRANSPORTATION

✔️ RELIABLE ✔️ ENGLISH-SPEAKING STAFF ✔️ CLEAN AND SANITIZED VAN ✔️ PRIVATE SERVICE ✔️ NO WAITING

↳ Shared Shuttle | best budget option the downside is that you will have to wait for other passengers and for the drop off, especially if your hotel is the last one on the route. But for only 10 USD it may be worth it. Book it here!

↳ Car Rental | This is my favorite option as you can pick up your car at the airport and drop it off at the end of your vacation so you will be free to explore Cancun and its surroundings at your own pace. Check rates on DiscoverCars

↳ ADO public bus | If you travel on a budget you can always rely on the ADO bus company (5USD) which may imply a long waiting time and it will take you to Cancun Downtown . From there you will necessarily need a taxi.

↳ Taxi | A taxi from the Airport may cost something like 50 USD. I would not recommend this option because taxi drivers will always try to inflate the rates, especially at the airport.

Quick peek into Cancun-to-Hotel transportation options

Getting from cancun to anywhere.

As I mentioned before Cancun is a huge city with the Hotel Zone separated from downtown by the Nichupte’ lagoon . With the exception of a nice sidewalk along the hotel zone, the city is not walkable at all and you need transportation to move around. So let’s see what is the best way.

✔️ Renting a Car – again, the best way to move around in Cancun and to reach the best attractions and nearby cities such as Tulum, Playa del Carmen, Valladolid, and more, having your own car is the best option. DiscoverCars is the platform I recommend where to look for the cheapest car rentals.

If you are concerned about renting a Car and driving in Cancun I have got you covered. It’s very easy and worry-free, especially after reading my guide 😉

✔️ Local city buses – From the Cancun hotel area to downtown, you can easily hop on the R1 and R2 buses that run along the strip, but once you get to Cancun Downtown using local transportation is kind of a mess and I would not recommend it.

✔️ ADO bus service – It’s a very efficient and cost-effective way to get from Cancun to almost anywhere and although is not as comfortable as driving your own car, the buses are brand new and clean. The service is also relatively cheap and connects you with all the major cities in the Yucatan peninsula and the entire of Mexico.

✔️ Colectivo (minivan) – if you want to try the local way and the cheapest one, you can use the colectivos (minivans) to get to either Playa del Carmen, Tulum, or Chiquila’ (Holbox). They leave from Tulum Av. opposite the ADO Bus station.

To get to Tulum you will need to get off in Playa and then hop on another colectivo to Tulum.

WHEN IS THE BEST TIME TO TRAVEL TO CANCUN

In Cancun, you have mainly two main seasons that is called the wet season ( summer) and the dry season (winter). There are some transition weeks between the two mains season that are called shoulder seasons. Let’s see what each of them looks like.

💦 Cancun wet season (summer) -The wet season starts approximately in June and until October. In this time of the year when the temperature is higher and there is a higher chance of rain, and even hurricanes (that is why it’s also called hurricane season) .

But also the sea water is warmer and prices go slightly down. It is also called the Low season although it’s not entirely so because there is still good affluence of tourists, especially family, due to school closure.

This is also when usually the sargasso is most likely to show up.

☀️ December through April (winter) – This is the dry season, characterized by mild temperatures, sunny days, and blue skies. The water temperature is cooler. Although there is less chance of rain, you can still find a few showers. This is the high season, because of the beautiful weather. Prices are at their highest, especially in December and Holy Week.

😎 After Easter – beginning of June (shoulder season) – This is generally the best time to travel to Cancun in my opinion because the prices are at their lowest, there are fewer crowds, and the water starts getting warmer.

We are still in the dry season slowly sliding into the wet season but the weather should be still nice for the most part. I say “should” because you can never be sure about the weather.

⛈ Mid-October – November (shoulder season) – This is another so-called shoulder season when the weather is the worst. The temperatures are at their highest, it’s most likely to rain, and even more risk of hurricane. But it can also be sunny and nice.

This time of the year is really unpredictable. The only thing you can be sure of is that it’s hot and humid. Sea temperatures are the warmest of the year and water temperatures are pleasant. Sargasso is going away (🥳) and the beach is cleaning up for the dry season!

The lower rates and fewer crowds make this season still an interesting time to travel to Cancun.

When is the best time to travel to Cancun? As you can see there is no best or worst time to travel to Cancun. It all depends on what you are looking for.

I will talk about Cancun Weather, events, and things to do for each month in specific posts.

WHAT TO PACK FOR CANCUN

Packing for Cancun is easy and straightforward, especially if you plan a beach-focused vacation, in which case it’s easy to pack light. Things may change if you want to venture out exploring which is something I always recommend.

Here below find what you MUST include in your suitcase I will write separate posts with more detailed packing list suggestions, with some cute dresses, especially for the ladies.

Keep in mind that although you are going to a beach destination where the dress code is usually relaxed, it’s not the case if you are going to a luxury resort where you are required to dress up in many restaurants at night and in fact, the ambiance calls for it as well. No worries because I will also cover that too, just bear with me.

SAFETY IN CANCUN

When traveling to the Mexican state of Quintana Roo, where Cancun is located, the US Travel Advisory site suggests “ Exercise Increased Caution” . It also says:

“ There are no restrictions on travel for U.S. government employees in Quintana Roo state, which includes tourist areas in  Cancun ,  Cozumel, Isla Mujeres,   Playa del Carmen ,  Tulum , and  the   Riviera Maya . However, personnel is advised to exercise increased situational awareness after dark in downtown areas of Cancun, Tulum, and Playa del Carmen, and to remain in well-lit pedestrian streets and tourist zones. “

Also, considering the 22.5 million passengers that flew into Cancun International Airport in 2021, as I mentioned above, I would say that Cancun is indeed a safe place to travel.

Bad things have happened before and I cannot promise they will never happen again, but they are usually drug and cartel-related so if you keep out of that circle you should be fine.

Then there is the usual small crime ad petty theft issue which you will find anywhere. So make sure you use some common sense and you should be fine.

Also, you need to consider the following in order to avoid getting sick or robbed

► Don’t drink tap water

► Use mosquito spray to protect yourself from bites (even the dangerous ones, see below)

► Always stay hydrated, especially in the summer but, really, always!

► Use sun protector except for when you are in a cenote or in the sea because they damage the environment (use a rough guard in that case, instead)

► Don’t swim in the water when the flag is red – Cancun sea is beautiful but it can be dangerous as there are a lot of undertows and rip tides, which is why is also a great place for surfing in Mexico

► Don’t pay in US dollars even if they are accepted because the exchange rate would be a rip-off.

► Don’t stay in your hotel all the time, go out and explore (but only after reading this Cancun Travel Blog blog and learning your way around:)

► Don’t buy tours from street vendors. Some of them may be ok but you never know and if you have an issue you may not find them again to report it.

► Don’t get wasted, especially if you are out alone.

► Get travel insurance before traveling.

Do I need travel insurance to travel to Cancun?

Yes, you do! I always recommend getting travel insurance before starting a trip for many reasons but mainly for peace of mind.

Of course, we hope that nothing happens but no matter how cautious we can be, there are many circumstances that don’t depend on us and we can fall victim, such as a flight delay a missing bag, or even a sudden flue that makes us miss the flight and lose loads of money that we have been saving for a year for our lifetime trip.

I am just giving examples. In Mexico, there are good hospitals in case something happens but they are pricey. Good travel insurance will cover all of it.

Travel insurance is the only thing that I buy with the hope that I never have to use it. 😂 And it’s the only purchase for which I am happy to say that I have “thrown away the money” but for the peace of mind it gives me it’s all worth it.

If you ask me I have two recommended sites, one is SafetyWings , which I find relatively affordable and quite comprehensive.

However, there is also a Travel Insurance master site that will help you find the perfect insurance for you.

You fill out the form with the information about your profile and requirements and they select the insurance company that is a good fit.

CANCUN TRAVEL GUIDE FAQ

Can you brush your teeth with tap water.

Yes, you can, but I would advise against it, to prevent any unpleasant bathroom situation.

C an you drink the water in Cancun?

No. Use bottled water or buy a water bottle to refill.

How many days in Cancun is enough?

It really depends on what kind of vacation you are looking for. If you just want to relax on the beach in your hotel, 4 or 5 days are more than enough.

If you love to explore, 1 to 2 weeks, depending on how much time you have. There are so many things you can do in Cancun and the surrounding that you will find plenty of things to keep you entertained.

Is it ok to travel to Cancun right now?

Yes of course it is more than ok. Just check the weather and the hotel rates and our guide on when is the best time to travel to Cancun to make sure the weather conditions fit your needs.

What month is the best to go to Cancun?

Check out the WHEN TO VISIT session of this post where I talk about it extensively.

What you should know before traveling to Cancun?

✔️ pre-book your airport transfer.

Cancun International Airport is a mess. So if when you get out you find your guy with your name on a board, it will make you feel relieved and at home, trust me.

I always recommend Cancun airport transport because they are reliable and you will be sure somebody is right there waiting for you.

You won’t have to negotiate the rate or struggle to understand each other because they speak English. Their fleet is impeccably clean and they have insurance.

The transfer is private so once you arrive you are off to your hotel with no waiting. This is how I love to travel.

✔️ Pay in pesos whenever possible, tip in pesos too

US is generally accepted anywhere (except for gas stations and toll roads) but it’s always better to exchange the money in a bank or a Casa de Cambio (not at the airport) and pay in pesos otherwise you will end up paying way more.

✔️ Choose the right hotel for your budget

I have listed my top hotels in this Cancun Travel Guide but I am going to write more about the best Cancun hotels, so stay tuned.

✔️ Don’t spend all your time on the beach

As I mentioned before there is so much to do in Cancun that it’s a shame to spend all your time on the beach, try to make at least one or two tours during your stay. You won’t regret it.

✔️ And take it easy with the sun

Remember we are in the Caribbean, where the sun is strong, even behind the clouds. So whether you go to the beach or out exploring remember to use good sun screen .

✔️ Sign up for tours to nearby destinations

Unless you are renting a car, which I recommend, there are so many amazing tours to choose from. Do not miss them.

How much money should I bring to Cancun Mexico?

Well, that depends on what you are planning on spending. Keep in mind that for major expenses you can use credit cards, visa and MasterCard are widely accepted.

For souvenirs , toll roads, snacks, and tips it’s advisable to have cash.

Why is Cancun considered so dangerous

Cancun is not considered dangerous. Check my full article on safety in Cancun to read more about the topic.

Is it safe to drive from Cancun to Playa del Carmen at night

I never recommend driving at night. You never know what can happen. Even a simple flat tire can become an issue it if happens at night in the middle of nowhere.

For what kind of traveler is Cancun?

Cancun is the perfect destination for all sorts of travelers, for any budget, and for any type of Vacation you are planning to have. With its spectacular beach, it can also be a great base for more adventurous travelers as well.

Honeymooners and spring breakers alike, families, and solo travelers will love what Cancun has to offer, especially after you have read this guide.

Getting Around

A wooden jetty extends into the Caribbean Sea at Cancun

Getting around Cancun can be tricky, but there are a few options for transportation.

If you’re flying in, your best bet is to book a transfer from the airport to your hotel in advance. Taxis can be inexpensive, and you’ll likely get ripped off if you’re not careful.

It’s generally not recommended to hire a car for Cancun travel as the roads can be difficult to navigate and the driving standards are fairly poor. The public transport system is unreliable, so it’s best to opt for walking or taxis when getting around.

It’s important to plan ahead when it comes to getting around Cancun and to make sure you’re aware of all of your options before starting your Cancun vacations.

Important Cancun information

When planning your Cancun travel, it’s essential to be aware of the important information related to the destination. Firstly, it is important to note that the official language of Mexico is Spanish, however in Cancun you can expect that many locals also speak English.

It is advised to have some understanding of Spanish phrases when travelling in the area to ensure a smooth Cancun vacation. It is also necessary to remember to bring a valid form of identification such as a passport for traveling in and out of the country.

When it comes to currency, Mexican Pesos is the national currency of Mexico and is used in Cancun and the surrounding areas. It is recommended to exchange money or use an ATM at an airport or hotel upon arrival. Credit cards are accepted at most hotels and restaurants, however not all vendors may accept card payments so it’s always good to carry some cash with you during your Cancun travel.

For health-related advice, it is wise to check with your doctor before departure for any vaccinations or other medical advice specific to Mexico and your Cancun vacations. Additionally, visitors should take extra care when swimming in the ocean and canals due to strong currents, and be sure to check if their hotel provides lifeguards at the pool or beach.

Finally, visitors should make sure they are aware of the relevant customs and laws in the region before their Cancun trip This includes being aware of local dress codes in certain areas, and not engaging in activities such as drug trafficking or smuggling as this can lead to serious criminal charges.

Cancun weather

When it comes to Cancun travel, you’re in luck – the weather in Cancun is typically sunny and warm year-round. During the peak tourist season of May to October, temperatures range from 82°F (27°C) to 86°F (30°C). The winter months from November to April are slightly cooler, with temperatures usually between 68°F (20°C) and 78°F (26°C).

What to pack for a trip to Cancun

An aerial shot of a Cancun beach

When you’re planning your Cancun travel, it's important to consider what you'll need to bring. Although Cancun is a beautiful vacation destination, the environment can be quite different than your home town. Here’s a list of 6 items that you’ll want to make sure you pack for your Cancun vacations:

Cancun’s climate is quite hot and sunny, so it’s important to bring sunscreen with a high SPF in order to stay safe from sunburns.

Lightweight clothing

The hot weather of Cancun means that you’ll want to wear breathable and lightweight clothing. You may also want to bring a pair of sandals or flip flops for walking around.

A wide-brimmed hat is great for keeping the sun out of your eyes while exploring Cancun.

Insect repellent

Mosquitos and other bugs can be quite annoying during the summer months in Cancun. Bring some insect repellent to keep them away.

Waterproof phone case

It’s not unusual to get caught in an unexpected rain shower while traveling in Cancun. To keep your phone safe and dry, it’s best to bring a waterproof phone case.

When you’re in Cancun, you’ll definitely want to take a dip in the ocean or pool. Make sure to pack a swimsuit to enjoy the water!

Cancun travel Top Tips

Bring cash for small purchases. Many shops and restaurants may not accept credit cards, so bring enough cash for small purchases.

Use the airport shuttle services. For a much cheaper rate, use the airport shuttle service to get from the airport to your hotel.

Choose a reputable tour operator. Do your research and choose a tour operator that has a good track record and is recommended by locals.

Avoid the busy areas. Cancun can get very busy, especially during peak season, so avoid the crowds and explore other less-visited parts of the city.

Be aware of the weather. Cancun’s climate is tropical, so pack appropriate clothes and sunscreen depending on the season you visit.

Shop around for the best deals. Compare prices between hotels, restaurants and tour operators and don’t be afraid to haggle if needed.

Pack light. Cancun vacations often involve lots of sightseeing, so it pays to pack light and only take essential items on day trips.

Get travel insurance. Make sure you purchase travel insurance before you embark on your Cancun travels, just in case of any unforeseen circumstances.

12 Best Things to Do in Cancun, According to Someone Who Has Visited Mexico 200 Times

Plan the perfect Cancun itinerary.

cancun tourist information

Pola Damonte/Getty Images

Going off the beaten path is an exciting way to travel, but sometimes it’s equally great to stick to the classics. And when it comes to Mexico, you can’t get much more classic than Cancun. The original tourist destination in Mexico, Cancun consistently delivers a quintessential tropical experience: soft, white-sand beaches, crystal-clear water, a toes-in-the-sand energy, and fantastic beachfront resorts.

It’s no wonder Cancun is one of the top beach destinations in the world. And yet, for as much as it has been explored, it still retains a secret or two for travelers wanting to venture a bit deeper. Whether you’re looking to bask on the beach, indulge in a spa treatment, or foray into the jungle-shrouded unknown, Cancun has the ingredients to impress even the most seasoned Mexico traveler.

Here's our list of the 12 best things to do in Cancun.

Hit the beach.

Eagle2308/Getty Images

The beaches in Cancun are among the best in the world. Nowhere else in the country will you find sand so soft and white, or water that perfect shade of turquoise. With no shortage of all-inclusive resorts in Cancun , staying directly on the beach is easy. That said, all beaches in Mexico are public, so even if you aren’t staying on the sand, you can still explore popular local beaches like Playa Delfines, Playa Chac Mool, or the blissfully quiet stretches of Costa Mujeres.

Have a great meal.

Fabian Montano/Getty Images

Cancun is a culinary hot spot, with many fantastic hotels and a picture-perfect Caribbean Sea setting. Avenida Kukulkan in the Hotel Zone is lined with fine-dining restaurants, while resorts around the region tout five-star dining experiences.

A personal favorite is Mar-Bella Fish Market Raw Bar & Grill. Tucked behind a grocery store, the seafront restaurant lets you pick your fish before it’s cooked to perfection.

Zachary Rabinor , CEO of Journey Mexico, recommends Puerto Santo, another casual seafood restaurant known for its toes-in-the-sand setting, fresh ceviche, aguachile, and legendary paella.

Indulge in wellness.

Courtesy of Haven Resorts & Spa

Some of the best spas in Mexico are found right in Cancun, featuring everything from therapies rooted in Mayan healing to the latest med spa technology. For an over-the-top experience, try Haven Riviera Cancun . The sprawling MySenses Spa offers a little bit of everything: a hydrotherapy circuit with Roman baths, a temazcal experience, and a dome-topped hammam.

The Waldorf Astoria Cancun has another spectacular spa experience, with eight indoor and 13 outdoor treatment rooms, a relaxation pool, and wet areas that include a sauna, a steam room, and an ice fountain. Tip: Book the 100-minute Melipona Honey Ritual, which includes a honey exfoliation and wrap, a full-body massage, and a honey face mask.

Sail to Isla Mujeres.

One of Rabinor’s top suggestions for things to do in Cancun is take a sailing trip across the Caribbean Sea to Isla Mujeres. This lovely, laid-back island is close enough to be a day trip from Cancun, but far enough removed to feel like a destination all on its own. Playa Norte is one of the best beaches in Mexico , while Playa El Cielo is one of the best spots in Cancun to snorkel with thousands of starfish.

Swim with whale sharks.

Ken Kiefer 2/Getty Images

While we’re on the subject of water activities, the diving in Cancun is among the best in the world. It's home to a section of the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef, and divers can expect a kaleidoscope of coral and fish beneath the water's surface. During the summer months, whale sharks come to the waters around Cancun. Snorkeling or diving with these gentle giants is a humbling experience, and a must for any marine lover.

Walk in Mayan footsteps.

Paul Biris/Getty Images

Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula is rich with Mayan archaeological sites. A short drive from Cancun in any direction will put you at the doorstep of some of the most spectacular Mayan cities in Central America.

One of the most popular day trips from Cancun is out to Chichén Itzá, arguably the most famous archaeological site in Mexico. However, visitors can also explore sites like the ruins of Tulum, Coba, Muyil, and Ek Balam. Each one offers something different, and you may feel like you have several of these preserved cities all to yourself.

Swim in a cenote.

MilicaStankovic/Getty Images

Beneath the pavement and forest floor across the Yucatan are thousands of interconnected underground rivers and caves. This network of subterranean waterways was important to the Mayan culture, as the sinkholes (called cenotes ) were believed to be entrances to the underworld. Today, these portals still exist, and many are open to the public.

You can find dozens of cenotes within a short distance from Cancun, all up and down the Riviera Maya. One of my favorites is Río Secreto, a spectacular underground river and cave system that feels like it sprung straight out of a fantasy novel. Thousands of dramatic stalactites and stalagmites, as well as deep, turquoise-colored cave pools, set the scene for a step back in time.

Head downtown.

Victor Ambriz/Getty Images

For years, the heart and soul of Cancun's tourism was focused around the Hotel Zone. But as the city has grown and changed, more and more travelers are venturing inland to the city's thriving downtown .

Avenida Huayacán is one of the main arteries of downtown Cancun. A local hot spot, it's a flourishing scene of trendy restaurants and bars. Downtown Cancun also has a vibrant street art scene, sprawling parks, hole-in-the-wall taquerias, and local markets selling handicrafts and souvenirs.

Explore the nearby small towns.

Tetra Images/Getty Images

Cancun may be a major seaside metropolis, but the region surrounding the city is home to some of the best small towns and villages in Mexico . From Spanish-influenced destinations to sleepy fishing villages with lovely boutiques, you'll find lots to explore away from the rattle and hum of the big city.

Valladolid, for example, is a beautiful Spanish-influenced city on the route between Cancun and Chichén Itzá. Visit the 16th-century Convent of San Bernardino of Siena overlooking the Parque Principal Francisco Canton Rosado. Casa de los Venados is a popular museum in Valladolid showcasing folk art and furniture.

South of Cancun, Puerto Morelos is a small beach community with a stretch of white sand and a charming downtown with open-air restaurants, local boutiques, and low-key bars.

Cook in the jungle.

Courtesy of Mexico Lindo Cooking

Mexico’s cooking schools are legendary, but one, in particular, has always been cemented in my mind. Mexico Lindo Cooking is more than just a cooking school — it’s a full-day journey that mixes traditional Mexican cooking with a sensory experience. Travelers are taken deep into the jungle, where a small, pink-and-yellow casita explodes from the depths of the green forest. Here, chef Alejandra Kauachi walks her disciples through recipes like cochinita pibil, Veracruz-style ceviche, tacos, tamales, fresh salsas, and handmade tortillas. The entire experience concludes with a beautiful sit-down lunch on the covered terrace.

Kayak in the Nichupte Lagoon.

LUNAMARINA/Getty Images

Most visitors to Cancun are so enamored with the beautiful beaches that they forget to turn around. On the other side of the Hotel Zone is one of the largest mangrove ecosystems in Mexico — the Nichupte Lagoon. Spread over nearly 12 square miles and including seven lakes, the Nichupte Lagoon is one of the best places in Cancun for kayaking, sport fishing, and boating. It's also the best spot to view a gorgeous Mexican Caribbean sunset.

Party on Avenida Kukulkan.

Jeffrey Greenberg/Universal Images Group via Getty Images

Nightlife in Cancun is legendary, particularly in the Hotel Zone along Avenida Kukulkan. Here's where you'll find nightlife legends, including Coco Bongo, Mandala Beach Club, and The City Nightclub Cancun. Not for the faint of heart, or those with an early bedtime, these pulsing, high-energy dance clubs keep night owls going until the wee hours of the morning.

Cancún

The Fodor's Five

The five things you need to know before traveling to Cancún

Cancún International Airport may overwhelm you.

Cancún International Airport (CUN) is Mexico’s second busiest airport by passenger traffic after Mexico City International (MEX). It has four sprawling terminals and one lesser-known terminal (FBO) for private aviation and Tropic Air commercial planes. From the minute you exit customs, you’re exposed to a chorus of sales pitches, pushy taxi offers, and charlatans pretending to work with the shuttle bus company while loud music blasts from the arrivals bar. It's easiest if you pre-book an airport collection, and perhaps walk through the exit with sunglasses on and earphones in to drown out the noise.

It’s not all about partying.

Cancún’s party palaces like Coco Bongo and Señor Frogs need no introduction. In this Mexican Caribbean destination there are certainly opportunities for boozy hijinks and wild tequila-fuelled antics, but wholesome fun is never too far away. From spas and circus nights to water parks, shopping, and hopping between underwater and topside museums, Cancún is not solely the preserve of hedonists.

There is life beyond the hotel zone.

Cancún’s Hotel Zone (Zona Hotelera) is the slender peninsula that you’ve probably seen in magazines and brochures of the city. This is where most travelers stay when visiting Cancún. While it has beaches of gobsmacking grandeur and a scintillating selection of restaurants and accommodations, don’t forget to head further afield to Downtown Cancún for rich cultural experiences and for your tourism dollars to also end up in local pockets.

Sargassum might thwart your beach plans.

From April to October, a pungent seaweed known as sargassum blankets many of the beaches in the Mexican Caribbean, Cancún included. It might be prudent to avoid these seven months or book your trip for Cancún’s shoulder seasons, which are October through November (crowds are thinner and hotel rates are lower) and April through May (when the sargassum hasn’t yet arrived in earnest). Also, choose a hotel that regularly clears sargassum from the beach and keep tabs on the state of Quintana Roo’s sargassum map.

Cancún has all types of hotels and not just all-inclusive resorts.

All-inclusive resorts reign supreme in Cancún but there are hotels and also hostels to suit every traveler. Whether you want to check into somewhere that’s family-friendly, luxurious, on the south of the “number 7” sandbar, or on the north closer to the nightlife action, with some research, you can find the right place for you.

Cancún is a popular Caribbean tourist destination on the northeast tip of Mexico 's Yucatán Peninsula, in Quintana Roo , which also is called the Mexican Caribbean. Next to 22 km (14 miles) of beaches, you'll find a wide variety of resorts, spas, clubs, and malls.

Peak season in Cancún tends to run from December to April. Airfare and hotel prices increase dramatically during these times, while dropping in the (northern hemisphere) summer and early autumn months. Late June is especially hot, so come prepared or try the off season. Hurricanes can be a major threat in late (northern hemisphere) summer and autumn.

Understand [ edit ]

cancun tourist information

Resting on the northeast corner of the Mexican Caribbean, Cancún, now a city of almost 900,000 inhabitants (2020), did not exist before the 1970s. It was a tourist project started at that time by the Mexican government in a sparsely inhabited, pristine area. Since then it has grown to become a big city and one of the premier beach resort destinations in the world.

It is composed of 14 mi (23 km) of pristine white beaches shaped like a number "7", home of the Mayan archaeological wonders, turquoise seas, a bountiful underwater world, and world-class vacation amenities. It is still considered the gateway to the Mayan World ("El Mundo Maya"). Mayan temples and ritual sites are everywhere, some smothered by lush jungle, others easily accessible.

Districts [ edit ]

Cancun consists of two distinct and separated areas, both part of the city of Cancun:

  • Hotel Zone ( Zona Hotelera in Spanish)
  • City Center ( El Centro in Spanish), as referred to commonly by locals.

Most tourists know Cancun primarily by their experience in the Hotel Zone and many on all-inclusive tours will never see anything else. Whereas nationals visiting from other parts of Mexico, those visiting family members, or visitors from abroad that are on a budget, may opt to stay downtown for a less opulent, more tranquil, far more "Mexican" experience.

Hotel Zone [ edit ]

The Hotel Zone can be defined by looking at a map of Cancun, and isolating solely the harp-shaped land mass protruding from the east side of town.

As a tourist, most of the things you are likely visiting Cancun for, will be centered around the Hotel Zone.

The Hotel Zone is entirely built around the tourist industry, and features resorts, all-inclusive mega hotels, and stunning Caribbean beaches.

Map

Stay here only if you don't mind spending your vacation with many other tourists, as well as being harassed by touts (pushy shop employees, tour salesmen, etc), sometimes even from across the street. This area is basically a Mexican clone of Florida, with not much of a difference, besides the water here being the Caribbean.

City center [ edit ]

Downtown Cancún in contrast is a pure Mexican city, laid out around the idea of supermanzana (super block), characterized as roughly 400-meter by 400-meter blocks, with larger roads and businesses on the outsides of the blocks, and residential roads, footpaths, housing and parks on the insides of the blocks, leaving it very accessible both via car and on foot. Supermanzanas consist of normal size city blocks called manzanas . The supermanzana scheme is common in cities of the Yucatan Peninsula, though it's not common in the rest of the country.

While the city center is referred to as 'El Centro', which translates literally to 'the center', there is no defined center of town. Visually, on the map, a useful reference for the center of down may be the popular location Mercado 28, which is noted below.

Given its lack of any history before the 1970s, do not expect to see very much, if any Mexican historical culture in Cancun. Instead, it is very much an example of modern Mexico, with many restaurants, North American fast food chains, shopping centers, markets and clubs.

Unfortunately, the downtown area also has no beach access. Due to this, Cancun is very much a tourist town, with tourists and the beautiful beaches completely separated from real Cancunians. If you find this setup unappealing, you should probably skip Cancun altogether and go to Playa del Carmen instead, where locals and the beaches are in the same area.

Those mostly seeking beaches and scuba diving, or who are a bit adventurous, can easily find rooms on equally beautiful and less crowded beaches along the coast just an hour or two south of Cancún. The island of Cozumel is an ideal place for serious scuba divers. Some Spanish language skills may aid in finding better deals. You can rent a car, or take the bus to Puerto Morelos (about 20 min) or Tulum (1 hr). Playa del Carmen (45 min, M$80 ( pesos ) is between the two. Taxis are also available.

Those looking for a base of operations who want good or luxury hotels and the advantages of urban life but prefer more local flavor may wish to stay in the Yucatan's main city of Mérida . Some international flights in to Cancún continue on to Mérida's International Airport. Merida is also easily reached by train ( Tren Maya ) or bus (ADO).

Climate [ edit ]

The climate in Cancún is tropical, with consistent hot and humid weather throughout the year, and very warm sea temperatures. You can expect a gentle breeze from the ocean to keep you comfortable. Temperatures reach their peak around May, and you may notice the extreme heat as you travel inland. Prepare for trips to archeological sites: wear light clothing, stay cool, and rest often. During the "rainy season" you will typically get clouds rolling in, then showers for 10 minutes, then the clouds roll out and you have beautiful sunshine the rest of the day. Rarely does Cancun have rainstorms that last long.

Get in [ edit ]

By plane [ edit ].

Cancún International Airport ( CUN  IATA ) is the large international airport serving Cancun and the Caribbean coast. The airport is located on federal highway MEX 307 at the southern end of Cancun, about 10 km from the hotel zone and about 15 km from downtown Cancun. See the airport article for more information.

Customs- Be sure to familiarize yourself with Mexico's Customs policies. Notably, you are only allowed one laptop duty-free. Traveling with both a personal and work laptop, or more than one computer per person in your group, will likely subject you to a duty on arrival.

By car [ edit ]

Driving in Mexico can be an experience. For more information and tips refer to driving in Mexico .

The Carretera Cancun-Tulum/Av Tulum (Fed Hwy 307) is the main north-south highway which begins at the intersection with Av Lopez Portillo (Fed Hwy 180) , north of downtown. From here this highway connects Cancun to the airport, Puerto Morelos, Playa del Carmen, Tulum and eventually to Chetumal near the Belizean border. Fed Hwy 180/180D goes east and west as Av Lopez Portillo and goes across the Yucatan Peninsula to Merida and winds down towards Campeche and Villahermosa along the Gulf Coast. Fed Hwy 180D , west of town becomes a toll freeway between Cancun and Merida with limited access while Fed Hwy 180 (the older two-lane highway or 'carretera libre') runs parallel to Hwy 180D, connecting various towns with the speed bumps (topes) to slow traffic going through the town. Cars rented in Mexico cannot be legally driven into Central America.

There are also car rental and travel agencies lined up along Blvd Kukulcan in the Hotel Zone and in other areas downtown. They are in free standing buildings and within the malls for travelers planning to take a day trip, shopping for tours and activities or for booking an onward journey to the next destination. The cars rented from the Hotel Zone or downtown may be less expensive than from the airport and can be had for a shorter period of time when the car is needed. See "By car" under "Get around" for links to specific car rental companies and in regards to getting around locally by car. Outside of the cities of Cancun and Merida, driving is generally easy in the Yucatan Peninsula.

By bus [ edit ]

Cancun's 21.1643 -86.8267 1 bus station is in downtown Cancun, northwest of the roundabout at Av Uxmal and Av Tulum. The station is served by a taxi rank in front of the station along Pino. Local buses to the hotel zone pass regularly behind the station on the Tulum Avenue.

To the station goes the first class bus ADO and second class buses like Mayab and Oriente, which have around 50% lower prices than ADO. Schedules of second class buses cannot be checked online. An employee in the station's ticket booth will show you the schedule on the computer monitor. Second class buses go less frequent than ADO.

From the bus terminal there are frequent buses to:

  • the Airport (30 min)
  • Playa del Carmen (1 hr 20 min)
  • Merida (4 hr)
  • Valladolid (2 hr in ADO, 3 hr 20 min in Oriente bus)
  • Campeche (6 hr 45 min) and
  • Chetumal (5-6 hr) in the Yucatan Peninsula.
  • Chichen Itza : Direct buses leave once or twice daily from Cancun; so to get there take a more frequent bus to Valladolid and transfer to another bus to Chichen Itza.

There are less frequent services (once or twice daily) to further away places such as:

  • Palenque (13 hr)
  • Tuxtla Gutierrez (18-20 hr)
  • San Cristobal de las Casas (18-19 hr)
  • Villahermosa (12-13 hr)
  • Mexico City (26 hr) and elsewhere in the Republic.

The following bus lines offer services into and out of the Central Bus Terminal:

  • ADO ( Autobuses Del Oriente ), Calle Pino, SM23, MZ 1, Lt 1 y 2, Centro , ☏ +52 55 5133-5133 , toll-free: +1800-009-9090 . They operate the ADO, ADO GL, OCC (Ómnibus Cristóbal Colón), Riviera and Platino bus lines, and the ClickBus.com booking site.
  • Second class buses with AU, Oriente, Mayab and Noroeste (subsidiaries of Grupo ADO) are available for more localized travel to Tulum, Playa del Carmen, Puerto Morelos, Polponah, Kantunilkin, Chiquila (location for Holbox ferry) and other nearby towns and villages in Quintana Roo, Yucatan and Campeche states. Second class buses typically takes longer to get across longer distances due to the multiple stops they make to pick up and drop off other passengers alongside the road.
  • Auto Centro , ☏ +52 999 923 9962 . operates second class bus service between Cancun's bus station & their own terminal in Merida via Tixpeual, Tixkokob, Euan, Cacalchen, Izamal, Tunkas, Dzitas, Valladolid, Chemax, Xcan and/or Leona on three different routes. These buses stop anywhere along the road to pick up and drop off people on request. ( updated Jul 2015 )
  • 21.16495 -86.82624 2 Playa Express , Pino 13, SM 23, Mz 1, Centro ( colectivo (shared ride van) stand across the street from the front of the bus station at Pino & Av Tulum ). Regularly scheduled shuttles to Puerto Morelos and Playa del Carmen in the Mercedes/Dodge Sprinter vans. They do not make stops at the airport. M$45 to Playa del Carmen . ( updated Aug 2017 )

By train [ edit ]

A railway network follows a loop route through the Yucatán Peninsula with a major station at the Cancún International Airport . The Tren Maya provides fast, comfortable transportation to major cities like Merida , Campeche , and Chetumal , popular beach resort areas like Cancun and Tulum , and several Maya archaeological sites including Chichen Itza , Palenque , Calakmul , Uxmal , and Xpujil . It opened in 2023-24.

  • 21.029352 -86.872814 3 Estacion Tren Maya Cancún International Airport , Cancún International Airport, state highway QR-180 . Largest full-service rail station for Tren Maya with 5 platforms, on the south side of the airport. ( updated Nov 2023 )

Get around [ edit ]

Map

Cancún is very easy to navigate. To the south is the airport, to the north is the city and in between on the stretch of land between the sea and the Nichupte lagoon are all the hotels, beaches and bars, referred to as the hotel zone or Zona Hotelera . Downtown is where most residents live and it stretches in on the mainland behind the lagoon.

By e-hailing [ edit ]

Uber, Cabify and Didi cover the city.

Didi differs from Uber in that you will be picked up exclusively by taxi's. You can think of using Didi as a way to call a taxi and see / agree on a set rate beforehand, whereas Uber and Cabify are standard rideshare services. If you can't find a driver near you on one of these apps, it may be beneficial to try another.

Buses are cheap and come frequently. Most bus drivers are very courteous and some will stop for you even if you are not waiting at a bus stop, though officially, they are only supposed to pick up at the designated stops. Routes R1 and R2 head up and down the main thoroughfare, Blvd Kukulcan. R1 buses will go to the ADO bus station and some go to Puerto Juarez (where you can catch the ferry to Isla Mujeres . R2 buses go into Centro and are useful if you need to visit Walmart for some perverse reason. Buses pass constantly but be prepared for possibly cramped and rough ride.

After paying the fare, which is on a per person basis, the driver will hand you a ticket/receipt which are usually printed with advertisements this does not serve as a transfer to another bus. Fares are usually M$12 (Oct 2022) for destinations within the city, while a ticket to anywhere in the Zona Hotelera costs M$12 (Jan 2022). Dollars are acceptable (bills only) but the fare is $1 per person (40% more than if you pay with pesos). The fare is per boarding, so you pay again if you have to board another bus to complete the journey. Do not expect buses to have amenities such as air conditioning and seat cushions. Many bus drivers speak enough English to help visitors get around.

When you are ready to get off, you can either push the button on top of the hand rail, or if you're not sure of your destination, tell the driver where you would like to get off or point to the destination using a bus map. Most bus drivers speak enough English to understand non-Spanish speakers.

Be careful when the bus is full as pick-pocketing is a concern.

The following companies operate buses locally:

  • Turicun (Transportacion Turistica y Urbana de Cancun)
  • AutoCar S.A. de CV
  • RutaDirecta.com

The websites only provide of list of routes showing them on the map as to where they go. No schedules as they run quite frequently. Another great resource for finding your way around Cancún are the Can-Do Cancún maps & Guides by Perry & Laura McFarlin.

Companies serving the station include all attractions and towns along the coast: Riviera Express and Mayab for the Riviera Maya (Playa del Carmen, Tulum, Xel-Ha, etc.) and ADO for the major national destinations. For some Riviera Maya destinations, it's possible to stop the buses on the Tulum Avenue without having to go all the way to the station, however if you are unsure about where to catch the bus (or have baggage) then it's best to go to the station.

By taxi [ edit ]

Taxis are plentiful, a bit expensive for the hotel zone and airport, but cheap in the downtown area.

It is always best to ask the driver for the price upon boarding to avoid misunderstandings. Not all taxi drivers will be able to give you a receipt if you request one; If they are, it will be a handwritten receipt.

Fares [ edit ]

Fares for the hotel zone depend on how far along the Blvd Kukulcan you want to go (fares available at hotel receptions and shopping centres), while downtown fares will generally be M$50-100.

Taxi prices will increase at night, and will also increase if you're hailing via a taxi stand , as they must pay for usage of the stand.

A taxi from the Puerto Juarez ferry terminal to the Mercado 28 area at night will be quoted at roughly M$200, and may have a driver willing to accept M$150 if you say that you need to find a taxi for that amount (Feb 2024). The cab fare to the hotel zone from downtown is M$250-300 (Nov 2023).

Be careful and clear with your taxista. They have set rates on paper for how much they should charge for the trip per kilometer (no meter). If you are splitting a cab with friends, be clear on the number of services, people, number of stops, and price he will charge to your destination. If your friends need to get out or be dropped off in another location before you, the price will be different than if you are all traveling to the same location. A "service" is considered to be from start point to a requested stop point.

Negotiating price [ edit ]

If you aren't able to agree on a price with a taxi driver before starting a ride, often, they will ask other taxi drivers nearby (if at a taxi stand) or call on the radio to find someone willing to provide the ride for the fare requested. There are many taxi drivers, and just because one is not able to provide a service at a given rate, does not mean that someone else would not be willing to do so, and they will be willing to help each other out and announce that you're in need of the fair at that price.

It is best to approach this situation as a mutually beneficial one, rather than an adversarial encounter. You're looking for a fare, and taxi drivers are looking for work. Not all fares will work for every driver, and the fare that a driver offers in some situations may not work for you. It's always fine to ask if there is another taxi nearby that may be willing to take the fare for that rate.

Because of this, it is acceptable, and encouraged even, to have an idea of the price you're willing to pay for a ride to a given destination, and when approaching a taxi, ask them "Can I go to (destination) for (price)?", or say "I need to go to (destination) for (price)." In the hotel zone, you may say this in English or Spanish; Downtown, it is likely you will need to be able to articulate this in Spanish.

It is very important that you are able to describe your destination accurately. For best results, in downtown locations, you should be ready to show them on the map. This will ensure an accurate taxi fare quote, as seemingly minute differences may be significant. Most taxi drivers will be familiar with most hotel zone locations by name, but may not understand where you're going if you just give them the name of a small location downtown.

Payment [ edit ]

Taxis generally expect payment in cash.

Some taxi stands may pass around a card reader, but do not expect every taxi to have one, and be very clear before beginning the ride that you need to pay by card.

Taxi's also may not always be able to make change for a M$500 note . If you only have 500 peso bills, such as from the ATM, it's important to recognize this and ask the driver, "Tienes cambio para quinentos (500)?" If they can't provide change, you need to figure this part out before you start the ride to avoid any awkward situations upon arrival where you can't properly pay.

Appearance [ edit ]

The city taxis are white with a single green horizontal stripe across each side of the vehicle. They can give rides within the city and to the airport but they cannot pick up passengers at the airport. Taxis of different color combinations are usually from other municipalities that cannot transport passengers locally. They can only drop off passengers coming from another city or town (municipality).

Be very careful if you choose to drive in Cancún. Avoid renting a car at the airport car rental agencies; instead, find a local rental agency in town or via your hotel with good reviews. The airport rental agencies have become notorious for long lines, frustration, bad service, bait-and-switch scams, and deceptive practices (i.e., not honoring reservations, and overcharging of uninformed tourists with required extra insurance fees). Even well-known, franchised rental companies that are popular and trusted in the US or other countries, have terrible reviews locally in Cancun at the airport, as they are often franchises all owned by the same people locally.

There is a commonly reported issue of police pulling over rental cars, especially on their way towards the airport, and demanding money for a supposed infraction. There is a law in the state of Quintana Roo that requires police to give tourists a verbal warning of any non-serious driving infraction rather than ticketing them. Tourists are recommended to print out this law and carry it with them if they are driving, as this will stop you from receiving citations, and is an easy way to shut down a situation where someone is demanding money after pulling you over.

When you pick up a rental, check and document (photo/video) for any existing damage and that all equipment (spare tire, jack) and lights are present and working. Make sure both front and back car tag/license plates are present. (In Mexico, police will remove the front tag of illegally parked vehicles to be returned for a fine at the station.) Also, if you are pulled over for a light violation, do not be surprised if the police holds out an open palmed hand, while holding your driver’s license hostage in the other. Most police officers are underpaid and will for the most part demand a small bribe to let you off the hook.

See the related travel article Driving in Mexico for additional information.

Orientation [ edit ]

Addresses in the city center (downtown) are organized by Super Manzanas (SM) or 'Super Blocks' which consists of several blocks or Manzanas (Mz) contained within. The SMs are separated by wider busier roads/boulevards (usually named) at all sides while the Manzanas (Mz) are separated by narrower, smaller side streets within a SM (can be numbered or named). On the maps the main roads form different unique shapes which are usually the Super Manzanas.

On Isla Cancún (Zona Hotelera) the addresses are based on how many Kilometers (Km) along Blvd Kukulkan from Km 0 (a parking lot) at the intersection of Blvd Kukulkan and Av Bonampak. As you travel east from Av Bonampak towards Punta Cancun (Km 9), and south through Isla Cancun (Zona Hotelera) along Blvd Kukulkan the Km numbers increase culminating at Km 25.3 (Riviera Cancun Golf & Resorts) south of Punta Nizuc. Blvd Kulkakun becomes 'Carretera Punta Nizuc-Cancun' which goes east towards the airport on the mainland.

Coming from the airport the taxis and shuttles typically follow 'Carretera Punta Nizuc-Cancun' to reach the Hotel Zone via Punta Nizuc at Km 25 and work their way north. The main highways through town are Av Tulum (Hwy 307) that goes north-south and Av Portillo (Hwy 180) which go diagonally between southwest and northeast. Both roads do intersect at Parque Crucero towards the north end of town.

With low gate prices and tasty concessions, it's a fun way to spend a summer afternoon or evening.

Buy [ edit ]

If there is no price tag, ask for the price first . The simple question is "¿Cuánto cuesta?" and is easily understood by Mexicans.

These ATMs have low withdrawal fees in the centro: BanCoppel, Banjercito, (city)banamex and Santander. In the Hotel Zone is a 21.135918 -86.747749 1 Banamex ATM inside the Selecto Super Chedraui.

Spending the day on the beaches of Cancún is not only an opportunity to relax, but to shop as well. Many of the native people of Cancún make a living by selling different items to the tourists on the beach. There are a variety of items to be purchased from these vendors, items such as sarongs, jewelry, sea shells and more. However, as in the markets, you have to be willing to bargain to get the right prices.

When shopping in Cancún, you can either go into the downtown area or the hotel zone. Downtown is much cheaper, but the Hotel Zone has brand-name goods.

Markets : bring your haggling skills and get ready for a vast shopping experience in any of the city markets in downtown Cancun. Great buys can be found, so stick to your price resolve. The prices are fixed in the (American style) malls and in the shops selling the brand-name goods which are comparable to those in the U.S. and Europe for the similar products.

Cheaper than the hotel zone, but still considered to have 'tourist' prices, and many touts pushing for your attention. A great place if you are interested in shopping downtown and are short on time, but due to its popular and central location, prices have become more expensive than other small independent shops in non-tourist locations. Don't forget to bargain. ( updated Jan 2024 )

You are likely to be offered a coupon for free jewelry at this store. Their website also offers a free gift for individuals who book a shuttle through their website. However, if you do not have any evidence of this, the offer will not be honored. A free shuttle service is offered to take you to the store from your hotel. However, the prices in the store are exorbitant (even at the "discounted" rates), and much of the same jewelry is sold by street vendors and hotel gift shops, as well as online. Be sure to investigate other vendors first to get an idea of how much you should pay. One rule of thumb is to buy at 20-30% of the quoted price. The salespeople will insist that it's worth much more, but stand your ground. If a salesperson agrees to your offer too quickly, you're probably paying too much. In addition, a number of people have reported difficulty obtaining refunds.

Souvenirs can be found for extremely cheap, and there are no aggressive shop owners hounding you to enter their store or pressuring you into buying something quickly. It would be convenient to bundle a trip here after visiting Parque Las Palapas, as part of these shops are adjacent to the park. There are restaurants and normal types of stores mixed in alongside souvenir shops and all sorts of other stores. ( updated Jan 2024 )

Drink [ edit ]

Cancún's nightlife is unlike any other destination on Earth. For some, a day in Cancún doesn't start until tasks like an 11:00 breakfast, nap on the beach, and siesta are arduously completed. This is your place to shine.

The legal drinking age in Mexico is 18, but it is not strongly enforced. There are restricted hours for purchasing alcohol in stores on Sundays. (Clarification needed).

The Hotel Zone is a huge venue and gets top entertainers and DJs. Don't be surprised to see Vegas like shows spontaneously erupt while you are sipping your piña colada. These clubs can charge large covers ranging from US$20–60 per person, though the cover can include an open bar.

You may find yourself dancing in a conga line, laughing your cares away and speaking whatever Español you managed to pickup. A must for the first timers, and always good fun for returners also. Coco Bongo's entertainment includes a show, complete with women swinging from the ceilings.

Most of the Zona Hotelera (Hotel Zone) venues listed below are in Punta Cancun, between km 9 and 10, in the area surrounding Hotel Krystal, Cancun Convention Center and the Grand Fiesta Americana.

  • 21.1325 -86.7475 1 Señor Frogs , Blvd. Kukulkan km 9, Zona Hotelera , ☏ +52 998 883 3454 . Señor Frog's is a restaurant by day and a dance club by night, and is one of the most popular spots for vacationers to visit. The restaurant opens up for lunch and serves international types of food such as pasta, chicken and pizza as well as Mexican cuisine all day until midnight. A cover charge of five dollars will get you into the party after 20:00 and includes a souvenir yard glass which you can then pay to get filled with your drink of choice. One of Señor Frog's famous attractions is the water slide that leads from the club out into the lagoon, just for a little bit of fun. As the evening progresses, Señor Frog's becomes less family friendly and more of a party establishment, waitresses will circulate, offering shots of tequila for a price. Waiters are also very "hands on", if you are not traveling in a family group, expect them to try to touch, hug, or kiss the female members of the party.
  • 21.133183 -86.7474 2 Dady'O , Blvd Kukulkan km 9.5, Zona Hotelera ( across street from Coco Bongo ), ☏ +52 998 883 3333 . Dady'O has been known to host some of the world's top DJs, including Red Foo (LMFAO), Apl.De.App and Tiësto, features a casual atmosphere, laser shows, pole dancing go go girls and flashing dance floor opening shows.
  • Coco Bongo , Blvd Kukulkan km 9.5 #30, Zona Hotelera ( across street from Dady'O ), ☏ +52 998 883 2373 , toll-free: +1 800 841 4636 . 22:30-05:00 . A nightclub featuring a show that has been compared with Las Vegas. More than 50 professionals in scenery. Tickets can be bought online for US$75. If you don't mind waiting to get in exchangeable tickets can be bought from Oxxo for M$1000. US$75 .

Sleep [ edit ]

Cancún has a large range of 3- to 5-star hotels in the Hotel Zone and some more economical hotels in the city center.

Several aging resorts on and around Punta Cancún are relying upon heavily discounted vacation packages or all-inclusive deals to fill rooms. They market themselves heavily as a great bargain to a wider audience. The result is that Punta Cancún is jam-packed with the revelers who can get rowdy and obnoxious. If you prefer to spend your vacations in a quieter and calmer setting, it may be worth it to splurge on a newer resort in the central or southern part of the Hotel Zone and further away from the "partying" crowds. Then you can save Punta for a brief day (or evening) trip for shopping, dining or entertainment.

Most of the budget and some of the mid-range category hotels are in and around downtown on the mainland. Many are also within a reasonable walking distance or short taxi ride to the bus station on Av Uxmal and Av Tulum (Hwy 307) for those arriving late and/or leaving early. The area is reasonably safe at night.

Several budget hotels can be found for M$400-650 (April 2022) on Google Maps with the according price and on booking.com. Just sort by price.

  • 21.15898 -86.82571 1 Hotel Rivemar , Av Tulum 51 ( next to Farmacia Similares on Av Tulum & Andandor Claves, a block up from Chedraui on Av Tulum ), ☏ +52 998 884 1199 . Check-in: 15:00 , check-out: 12:00 . In the downtown area near the bus station. Front desk help is very friendly. You can keep your bags at the hotel even after checking out. You can take the Rt. 1 bus to the hotel/beaches district. When booking directly at the hotel it's M$650 for 1 person and M$750 for 2 persons. (April 2022)
  • 21.15998 -86.82717 2 Fiesta Party Hostel - Cancun , Alcatraces #43, SM:22 Mza:10 , ☏ +52 998 892 7902 . This hostel does not fail to live up to its name, and if you are looking to hang out with your fellow party people, you shouldn't be disappointed here, where drinks and revelry flow freely. If you don't like noise, on the other hand, this might not be the most ideal accommodation. But the establishment does provide free breakfast and dinner plus bus trips to the beach and a happy hour every evening. M$282 . ( updated Apr 2022 )
  • 21.16033 -86.83089 3 Hostel Kankun , Yaxchilan Ave/end of MaraÑon St #26 , ☏ +52 998-101-7399 . The cheapest hostel in Cancun and within walking distance of the ADO bus station. Includes 24-hr reception, towels, and fans in each room. Has private rooms and dorm beds available. Does not take credit cards. It is a very basic hostel, but their nightly rate is set accordingly. US$5/person/night . ( updated Mar 2016 )
  • 21.129941 -86.749823 4 Hostel Natura . A dorm is about M$400 (April 2022) .
  • 21.129999 -86.75028 5 Mayan Monkey Hostel & Bar . A dorm costs around M$600 (April 2022) including taxes .
  • 21.134099 -86.749298 6 Selina Cancun Laguna Hotel Zone & Cowork . A bed in a dorm is around M$460 (April 2022) .

The economical way to stay in the hotels and resorts in some of the "mid range" and in the "splurge" categories is to consider an "all inclusive" on BookIt.com or another similar company which typically would include airfare (on chartered or regularly scheduled flights), airport transfers and hotel stay. Some of these all inclusive packages may also include two or three daily meals and/or an escorted tour or some other organized activity in the area. Checking in at the front desk without prebooking for a room or a pre-purchased all inclusive or packaged tour is the most expensive way to check in.

  • 21.11055 -86.83963 7 The Yellow Capsule , Blvd Cumbres SM 310 MZ 109 LT4 ( in Plaza La Roca ), ☏ +52 998 415 0714 . If you missed the chance to stay at a capsule hotel in Japan, you can do it right here in Cancun. The spaceship-like compartments and interiors are clean, and the complimentary breakfast includes an egg sandwich. Plus, the lodging has airport shuttles and organized tours to places such as Isla Mujeres. around M$900 . ( updated Apr 2022 )

  • 21.07756 -86.77506 11 Grand Oasis Cancún , Boulevard Kukulcan Km 16.5 Lt45-47, Zona Hotelera , ☏ +52 800 016 2747 . Resort with a college-aged crowd. The rooms are clean and surprisingly spacious for the price. The pool is generally crowded during peak times but is large and features several swim-up bars. The bad part is that since the Oasis is all-inclusive you basically get what you pay for, the food and drinks are not the best quality. The buffet-style restaurants are bland and the food can get quite repetitive. An exception is the sushi restaurant. All bars also stop serving alcohol at midnight, which is unfortunate, but there is a 24 hr liquor store right across from the resort with prices somewhat expensive for Mexico. They also sell absinthe. M$2785 .

You could also try out the growing vacation rental market as well. It's a chance to experience Cancún without having to share close spaces with thousands of tourists. They are an alternative if you are willing to go without the frills of room service or resort commodities.

Most resorts in the hotel zone have a travel agent on site during the daytime to assist you with making reservations around Cancún, including the Mayan ruins. It is often better to book activities through these travel agents as they are employed by the hotel and cannot easily cheat you. Activities are also sold at booths found in the busier areas. Prices for the same activities are cheaper in Cancún town than in the hotel zone.

Stay healthy [ edit ]

Water [ edit ], in resorts and hotels [ edit ].

As a tourist, unless explicitly told otherwise by your hotel that they have a water purification system, it is strongly advised that you only drink bottled water and not tap water.

Most of the resorts in Cancún have purified water at all of the facilities located inside the resorts including the bars and restaurants. When in doubt, ask and find out.

In all-inclusive resorts, you will get unlimited water bottles, so you can use them instead.

In restaurants [ edit ]

The upper-scale restaurants usually have purified water as well, but water from faucets outside of these areas is not safe to drink.

You can trust that any water you are provided in a glass at a restaurant is purified water, and not from a tap, and is therefore safe to drink. Same with ice.

Restaurants universally will use large garrafones of purified water, or may have a tank that is filled periodically by truck, depending on restaurant size (There are frequently Agua Potable trucks moving around town to deliver potable, drinkable water).

Elsewhere [ edit ]

If you are in a location that does not provide purified water as part of the accommodations, you may go to the nearest OXXO or convenience store. Universally, they all sell Garrafones . A Garrafon , in this context, is a 6-liter jug of purified water. If you do not need this much, there are all sizes of smaller containers of bottled water, usually 4-5 liters, 2 liters, 1 liter, and some smaller sizes, with reasonable prices.

There are also frequently workers that roam the streets with fresh garrafones. You will typically hear someone slowly calling out "aguaaaaaaaaaaa" to announce they are in the area. You will benefit from knowing some Spanish to complete this transaction.

Sun [ edit ]

The sun's UV rays are extremely strong in Cancún, even on cloudy days.

The sun will burn any exposed skin on most persons from northern climates within a few minutes . Use a sunscreen with a high SPF and avoid being exposed to the sun around mid-day.

Because Cancún has powerful waves (see below), do not assume your sunscreen layer will remain intact. Always apply a fresh layer of sunscreen after taking a dip in the ocean.

Sunscreen can be found for reasonable prices all over the city. Do not be fooled by a resort or overpriced shop selling sunscreen for 400 pesos or more. You can find sunscreen in most OXXO stores or similar convenience stores for 100 pesos or less.

Drugs [ edit ]

Avoid taking any recreational or illegal drugs while in cancun, and try to avoid buying popular, prescription medications here as well.

There is an ongoing epidemic of both illegal and legal, prescription-grade drugs & medications containing fentanyl, which can kill you in a dose as little as 5mg (the size of the tip of a pencil), as well as methamphetamines. Counterfeit prescription drugs have been found in pharmacies in Cancun, notably in tourist-zone-located pharmacies that are frequented by people looking to purchase medications to bring home with them.

Fentanyl and methamphetamine are very cheap to manufacture, and are being increasingly found as a substitute in many illicit drugs, as well as in some counterfeited drugs found in pharmacies.

Stay safe [ edit ]

Beaches in Cancun are for the more advanced swimmers, the edge of the open ocean can make for a challenging and fun swimming experience. For less advanced swimmers, or those with little ones, pick a resort facing Isla Mujeres for a gentle and relaxing aquatic experience. Be aware that the island becomes extremely hot during day and there are few, if any opportunities to cool off. The sand found here is ground up coral and doesn't get hot like you might expect. The beaches are absolutely gorgeous and the water is crystal clear and warm.

If planning to spend time in the ocean water around Cancun or neighboring areas, be aware of Thimble Jellyfish, also sometimes referred to as 'sea lice'. Thimble Jellyfish larvae can cause an itchy rash to erupt, and are a somewhat common traveler complaint.

Ocean currents — The ocean currents in Cancún, depending on the season you visit, can be strong. While the currents may not be strong enough to pull you under, keep your guard up at all times. Look for the colored flags that are planted on the beach as well as ask your hotel's concierge or a lifeguard (if one is available). As a rule of thumb, if you're not a strong swimmer (or a non-swimmer) it is best to stick to the hotel's pool for water fun. Remember, beaches in Mexico are Federal Zones with no lifeguards on duty, lifeguards may only be found within the beaches at the hotels.

Weather — Cancún is a place where the weather can change in a matter of minutes rather than hours. As in most tropical places, rain storms will start quickly and leave as quickly as it came. When a storm lingers, use caution in the water; especially when lightning is present.

Timeshare and condos — They are a big business all over Yucatan, especially Cancún."Tourist information" is another word for sales representative. If someone is offering you an "free" tour to anyplace or at a discount this means a 90-minute or longer presentation about condos and time-shares. There are 20 reps waiting on the righthand side when you arrive at the Cancún airport. There are also promoters trying to attract tourists with free Xe-Hal and Chichen Itza tours. If you are traveling on a budget, the presentation with heavy discount on tours or hotels can end up saving you several hundreds to thousands of dollars. However, you should have a general idea of what timeshare and presentations are before you go and practice caution with everything that the sales pitch presents in order to avoid being trapped in a contract for several years.

Nothing is free — Most important lesson. Someone comes up to you and says you want a shot of tequila? Come on, it's fun. This means you have not negotiated the price.

The Buddy System — If you plan to have a long night out in the strip, take precautions and have a friend with you at all times (even walking to the bathroom). Unsuspecting tipsy tourists can be easy targets for petty robbery.

ATMs [ edit ]

Location [ edit ].

Don't use privately owned ATMs outside of the banks.

Privately owned ATM in cancun. Distinguished by 'ATM' across the top instead of a bank logo. Avoid using these unless necessary, and double check your statements afterwards. Commonly seen in tourist locations in town.

There are ATMs all over Cancún. Use only ones that are inside banks, branded by banks in a trusted location, or in your hotel.

Bank-branded ATMs in very highly trafficked locations such as the Walmart or Soriana stores are generally safe, however are regarded as less so than ATMs directly inside a bank. These are typically used out of convenience.

Unbranded ATMs on the street should be treated with the highest level of caution of all and used as a last resort.

You are at higher risk of becoming a victim of identity theft when using unbranded, public ATM's in these spaces, as they are not closely monitored for tampering by card skimmers, etc.

Private or unbranded ATMs will typically also have very significant ATM fees.

ATM currency exchange rate scam [ edit ]

It's very common when taking money out from an ATM using a foreign debit card, for the ATM to offer you an exchange rate. This is always a worse exchange rate than your bank offers.

When you see this exchange rate shown, with a 'decline' button present , you are looking at a promotional or offered exchange rate that can and should be declined. After pressing decline, the rest of the transaction will go through using your own bank's exchange rate, which will be much closer to the mid-market rate.

Connect [ edit ]

The best cellular network provider in this area is Telcel. You can acquire a SIM card for M$100 or less (Dec 2023), for example in any OXXO.

If you do not know what to say, you may tell the cashier "Necesito un chip Telcel." ("I need a Telcel SIM card") SIM cards here are commonly referred to simply as a chip .

You activate it by recharging M$50, which can be also done in any OXXO. ("Necesito recarga mi chip Telcel", I need to recharge my Telcel SIM.)

Cope [ edit ]

Consulates [ edit ], go next [ edit ].

On the Yucatan peninsula you find several camping places with a provided tent from M$150 per night (Feb 2022, including mattress, pillow and bed cover). They are available in the nature, near or inside towns. Otherwise private rooms and hostels are available.

To the south [ edit ]

Out of town trips [ edit ]

  • 20.681423 -88.570314 1 Chichén Itzá Archaeological Site – 200 km. The largest Maya archaeological site in Yucatan, Chichen Itza is often visited on a day trip from Cancún, but is rather distant and only a small portion of the site and attractions can be seen this way. If you find the ancient Maya of interest, spend a night at one of the hotels at Chichen so you can avoid having a rushed incomplete visit. You can take a public bus or a private vehicle, about 2½ hours from Cancún by car. Also, close to the site is a cenote, which is a fresh water sinkhole, where you can swim. The Kukulcán Pyramid, one of the most impressive Maya structures and voted one of the World's New Seven Wonders, is now closed off to climbing to preserve it from wear.
  • 21.235993 -86.734872 2 Isla Mujeres – 15 km. A great break from the Cancún tourist traps. This small island is a 20-minute ferry ride from the hotel zone or from Terminal Maritima Puerto Juárez, located 5 minutes from downtown Cancún. On the island rent a scooter to get around fast and cheap. There is a beautiful ecological water theme park, Garrafon , with splendid vistas on land and a magical underwater world.
  • 21.493573 -86.793244 3 Isla Contoy – 40 km. About 30 km (19 mi) north of Isla Mujeres and apart from its natural beauty it is considered to be the most important nesting place for sea birds in the Mexican Caribbean with more than 150 different species. You can only go there with a tour operator, not on your own.
  • 20.215086 -87.429257 4 Tulum Archeologicial Zone – 130 km. The only major Maya archeological site to overlook the Caribbean Sea. Tulum is believed to be one of the most important ceremonial sites for the Maya people. It dates back more than 7 centuries and shows the remains of a huge walled city with roads, homes and businesses by the sea. The major highlight of Tulum is El Castillo which is a large pyramid that sits on a 40 ft (12 m) cliff. ADO Buses from Cancún run around 2 hr 20 min and cost M$226 (April 2022). On the ADO website and app the stop is called "Tulum zona arqueológica".
  • 20.491283 -87.725294 5 Coba – 140 km. A beautiful site; it was one of the largest Maya cities in ancient times, but much is still hidden under lush jungle. It boasts the tallest pyramid of the Yucatan Peninsula, the Nohoch Mul. Muyil boasts a lake surrounded by many Maya constructions.
  • 20.580555 -87.119809 6 Xcaret (ecopark) ( 80 km (45 mi) ). An eco-archaeological park less than 7 km (4 mi) south of Playa del Carmen, in the Riviera Maya. Here you can admire tropical flora and fauna typical of the region as well as different expressions of the Mayan culture. In its facilities you can find an archaeological site, snorkeling in underground rivers, beach, butterfly pavilion, orchid greenhouse, regional fauna breeding farm, Mayan village, jaguar island, among others. For additional cost visitors can swim with captive dolphins; enjoy the Temascal and Spa services. At night you can admire the unique night show “Xcaret México Espectacular” which features a variety of performances from ancient Mayan culture to traditional Mexican music and dances.

12 Top-Rated Tourist Attractions in Cancún

Written by Meagan Drillinger Updated Dec 28, 2023 We may earn a commission from affiliate links ( )

Welcome to Mexico's most recognized paradise. Cancun, perhaps the best-known destination in all of Mexico, sits on a 13-mile-long, 396-meter L-shaped island that squares off the north coast of the Yucatan peninsula.

Cancun was always destined to be a paradise. In fact, it was built specifically with luxury travel in mind. The large vacation center was built up from jungle and pristine beach in just over a decade. Today it is one of the most visited destinations in the world, attracting more than four million tourists annually. The big draw? Endless attractions and things to do. From white-sand beaches to impressive large coral reefs to explore and near-perfect weather, you'll never run out of adventure.

Palapas dotting a white-sand beach in Cancun

The prime tourist area is linked by a causeway to the mainland on which the modern city of Cancún itself stands, a vibrant hub with a number of interesting attractions worth visiting -assuming, of course, you can drag yourself away from the beaches.

And if you're only able to get away for a single organized tour or excursion , make sure it's to one of the well-preserved, historic Mayan sites dotted around the island. Most of these are an easy tour bus ride away, and offer plenty of sightseeing opportunities along the way. To help ensure you get the very best out of your time in this tropical paradise, be sure to refer often to this list of the top things to do in Cancún.

1. Visiting Cancún's Beautiful Beaches

2. exploring the mayan ruins of chichén itzá, 3. discovering el rey maya ruins, 4. stopping at the maya museum, 5. diving to the cancun underwater museum, 6. exploring el meco archaeological site, 7. enjoying animal adventures, 8. climbing the scenic tower & xcaret, 9. getting lost at urbano kabah park, 10. cruising to isla mujeres, 11. exploring tulum, 12. chasing adrenaline with extreme tours, where to stay in cancun for sightseeing, cancun, mexico - climate chart.

Chac Mool Beach in Cancun

Most of Cancún's top resorts are built with direct access to the beaches, known in Spanish as "playas." You'll enjoy stunning views over the sparkling, crystal-clear waters that make this destination so popular with tourists seeking a memorable Mexico vacation. Cancún, in fact, consists of a number of long stretches of beach , and while regular visitors may have their preferences, it's certainly hard to go wrong. They're all nice and have something great to offer.

Among the most popular playas are de las Perlas , Juventud , Linda , Langosta , Tortugas , Caracol , and Chac-mool , some of them lying alongside the Boulevard Cancún and the Paseo Kukulkán all the way from the city boundary (of these, Tortugas, Caracol, and Chac-mool tend to be the busiest).

Also of interest is the seven-and-a-half-kilometer-long Paseo Kukulkán, alongside which is an 18-hole public golf course known as Pok-ta-Pok.

Chichen Itza

Few visitors will want to miss the chance to spend at least a little of their vacation time sightseeing at one or more of the larger Mayan ruins within reach of Cancún. One of the most popular day trips is to Chichén Itzá , three hours west of the beaches and one of Mexico's largest and best-restored archaeological sites. Settled by the Mayans more than 1,000 years ago, this UNESCO World Heritage Site includes many famous Chac-mool statues, along with important buildings such as the 30-meter-tall El Castillo, one of the country's most famous pyramids.

If you're an early-riser, you may in fact want to join Chichen Itza and Cenote Swim tour . This tour starts early and is a full day. Hotel pickups are scheduled for 7am, but are worth it for the chance to explore the famous ruins. These fun day-long excursions include the important sites, a bevy of fascinating facts, a buffet lunch, a visit and swim at a nearby cenote, and round-trip transportation.

El Rey Maya Ruins

If you've room in your Mexico itinerary for another interesting archaeological site, just a few minutes away from the Punta Nizuc end of Cancún are a number of interesting Mayan ruins known as El Rey. Named after a mask found here that was believed to be dedicated to the sun god, the El Rey Ruins (Las Ruinas del Rey) include the remains of some 47 buildings, along with numerous tombs built by the Mayans from AD 900 onwards.

Of particular interest are the two main platforms with their temples, once part of the market, which also served as important ceremonial areas. It's well worth taking the time to visit, and many resorts offer inexpensive tours to the site, which is also famous for the large colonies of iguanas that live here.

Maya Museum (Museo Maya de Cancún)

Located in the Cancún Center, the city's large convention complex, the Maya Museum (Museo Maya de Cancún) is an attraction that's certainly worth visiting to learn more about the region's rich history. The largest such museum project since the opening of the Templo Mayor Museum in Mexico City in 1987, this superb attraction does a good job of explaining the ancient roots of the region's Mayan culture, from its founding centuries ago right up to the modern day.

Highlights include some 350 artifacts spread across three halls, most from in and around Cancún, including skeletal remains found in Tulum that date back 14,000 years, and the remains of the famous 10,000-year-old "Woman of the Palms."

Other notable exhibits include displays of Mayan architecture and art, including sculptures from Chichén Itzá and the adjoining San Miguelito archeological site. There's also a variety of programming for kids, including art and crafts.

Address: Blvd Kukulkan km 16.5, Zona Hotelera, 77500 Cancún, QROO

The Cancun Underwater Museum

One of the most unusual points of interest in this resort town is the Cancún Underwater Museum (MUSA). Set up in 2009 in the wake of storm damage to the Cancún National Marine Park , this seabed-based attraction is dedicated to the "art of conservation" and is a delight for divers to explore.

The core of this unique art collection are the more than 500 sculptures spread across two underwater galleries (a few are located on land in a nearby mall) submerged at depths of between three and six meters and encompassing human figures in a variety of poses (there's even a concrete car).

Put together by six artists from Mexico and Britain, the sculptures will ultimately form the basis for new coral reefs. A variety of guided snorkeling and diving tours area available. If diving is not your thing, this remarkable collection can be viewed from the comfort of one of the many glass-bottom tour boats that ply the waters.

El Meco Archaeological Site

Another interesting Mayan site that is easily accessible from Cancún's main resort area-this one located at the north end of the main beaches-is the El Meco Archaeological Site. Originally inhabited around AD 300, it rose to prominence as a Mayan trade center from the 1100s until its decline after the arrival of the Spanish in the 16th century.

Of particular interest is the 12.5-meter-tall El Castillo, the only pyramid of its kind to have been built in the area. Perched atop the pyramid are the remains of an old temple from which you'll be rewarded with stunning views over the coastline and Isla Mujeres . This easy one-hour or so visit is well worth adding to your Cancún itinerary.

Dolphin experience

A good place to get a close-up view of the area's rich marine life is at Cancún's Interactive Aquarium . After donning flippers and a snorkel, you're free to swim around the facility's enclosures surrounded by numerous species from stingrays to seahorses and clown fish. The real highlight, however, is the attraction's "swimming with dolphins" experience, an exciting program that allows you to get up close and personal with these gentle sea creatures. Similar programs are also offered at other nearby venues including Dolphin Discovery and Dolphinaris Cancún .

Address: Plaza La Isla, Blvd. Kukulcan Km. 12.5, Zona Hotelera, 77500 Cancún, QROO

Xcaret

A must-do while in Cancún is to take a trip up the Scenic Tower (Torre Escenica). Something of a landmark in the hotel district due its height - it's 110 meters tall - as well as its pencil thin base, the tower is a fun diversion for those wanting a bird's-eye view of the city, as well as its many beaches and the surrounding coastline.

While a set of steep steps can be climbed, by far the best way to reach the top is to simply take a seat in the large round elevator that gradually, as it rises and rotates, becomes an observation deck. It's a particularly attractive structure at night when it's lit up to resemble a Mayan representation of a flower.

The tower is in fact part of Xcaret, an interesting mix of theme park and natural attractions (entry to the tower is included with Xcaret admission). Given its 50 or so cultural and natural attractions, you can expect to easily spend a day here exploring the many things to do. Highlights include water-based activities including a beach and lagoon, plus the chance to explore underground rivers, a coral reef aquarium, a folk museum, and performances of music and dance, an equestrian show, boat tours, and plenty of dining options.

Also fun is Ventura Park Cancun , with activities including a zipline, water park, and a dolphin encounter.

Address: Blvd. Kukulcan Km. 4.5, Kukulcan Boulevard, Zona Hotelera, 77500 Cancún, Q.R., Mexico

Aerial view of Urbano Kabah Park

In the heart of Cancún is Urbano Kabah Park (Parque Kabah), also known as the Kabah Ecological Park. This natural oasis is a popular spot for a stroll, a jog, or a picnic, and consists of a two-kilometer long trail that cuts through a mix of tall palm trees and lush gardens.

The park is particularly popular for families traveling with kids due to its playground and petting zoo. There's plenty of wildlife to watch out for, too, including iguanas, the raccoon-like coatis, deer, a type of small wild pig called a peccary, and even the occasional spider monkey.

It's a particularly good spot for bird-watchers to visit, especially during migration season, when species from as far as the US and Canada winter here. Other highlights include the Casa Maya Museum , a tiny yet fascinating attraction with its history of the development of the region.

Address: Yaxchilán, Sin Nombre, Cancún, QROO

Isla Mujeres

Another destination that is closely associated with Cancún is the lovely Isla Mujeres (the Island of Women). Located about 13 kilometers from the mainland and just a short hydrofoil ride from the pier at the convention center (Cancún Center), this long, skinny island-it's just seven kilometers long and 650 meters wide-is particularly popular among surfers for the larger waves experienced on its east coast, while divers love the abundant marine life surrounding the numerous coral reefs of Garrafon Natural Reef Park.

Isla Mujeres ferry

It's also popular with beachgoers who enjoy the less hectic pace; traffic on the island is limited to taxis and buses, all of which are vastly outnumbered by golf carts and scooters. Isla Mujeres is also a popular day trip destination for those staying elsewhere on the Riviera Maya thanks to its many fine restaurants offering excellent views over the water to Cancún.

Also popular to explore is Contoy Island (Isla Contoy). Located some 30 kilometers north of Isla Mujeres, this tiny island is now a national park due to its important flora and fauna. A variety of providers offer fun eco-tours and adventures.

Mayan ruins at Tulum

Tulum, just 90 minutes south, is a better option for those pressed for time. Famous for its cliff-top location and for being the only known fortified Mayan coastal town, Tulum contains many other unique structures in addition to its tall, wide walls, most noticeably its Temple of the Frescos with its sculptures and reliefs depicting seated figures with elaborate headdresses. The site's largest building, the Castillo, is also its most famous, perched as it is on the cliff-edge overlooking the sea.

A fun way to see the best parts of this attraction-along with other nearby points of interest-is via a 3-in-1 Discovery Combo Tour that takes in the Tulum ruins, cenotes, and caves, along with some reef snorkeling . Also included in this day-long adventure is an informative jungle walk, along with transportation, a bilingual guide, all equipment, plus a traditional Mexican lunch.

Jumping into a cenote in the Riviera Maya

Blanketed in miles upon miles of jungle, the area surrounding Cancun is primed for extreme adventure activities. This includes everything from ATV tours to ziplining, diving cenotes, and everything in between.

You may want to book this ATV, Ziplines, and Cenote Tour at Extreme Adventure Eco Park Cancun . The half-day experience includes a combination adventure experience from Cancun. Activities include off-roading in an ATV, ziplining through the jungle, and swimming in a local cenote.

Guests can be picked up from their Cancun hotel and will also be returned in an air-conditioned vehicle. From here, they are whisked off to the eco park, where an experienced guide will take you on a treetop tour through the zipline park. From here, climb aboard a Honda 220cc ATV for a trail ride down bumps, rocks, and roots. The experience caps off with a cooling plunge in a cenote. Snacks are included on the tour, as well.
